"That accident at my high school. I told you that a person was hurt, but the guy wasn't hurt...He was killed." She says quietly, her eyes watering like she's about to start sobbing.
Killed? By who? "Did you have something to do with it?" I ask carefully, trying to prevent her from crying.

"Did you have something to do with it?" He asks. I stare down at the floor and nod my head, yes. "Yeah, I did it." I tell him. "I killed someone." I say as the tears fall. I bring my hands up to my face.

She stares down at the floor, and somehow I know what's coming. "Yeah, I did it. I killed someone." She says, starting to cry. Moving over, I awkwardly pat her back, leaning down.
"You? What happened?"

He walks over to me and pats me on the back, then leans down and asks, "You? What happened?"
I look up into his eyes and there was no way of not telling him the truth, "He was going to rape me." I say truthfully.

"He was going to rape me." Oh. Well, we've just entered a whole other topic as equally disturbing as death. This girl is full of horrible events, isn't she.
"So, then, didn't you have...self defense on your side?" I ask, trying to remain technical, and not think about someone trying to rape this girl sitting before me.

"So, then, didn't you have...self defense on your side?" He says. I shake my head, "I guess when the court saw that I was a mutant, they didn't give it a second thought. I was just a thing that killed an innocent person. That's what the lawyer said."

Jess's smile looks more than a little forced and I'm not surprised when he tries to change the topic. "So, anyways, topic change...classes here, like the one you're missing. Are they every day?"
I don't blame him for being uncomfortable. It must be horrible to not be able to control it. I've had trouble sometimes, too, but not like that. Not like a werewolf.
"The classes are five days a week for about five hours. Then we usually have about two hours in the simulation room working on our 'gifts.' Sometimes we work as a team, sometimes there are private training sessions. Weekends, no classes, but there's lots of homework so there's usually someone in the library working on it, and we sometimes have other practice sessions, but usually it's free time," I explain.
