Part 9b ~ Two Of Us ~ By Carolyn Sawyers
Jacob deciding that Raymond had enough brooding time walked his way with two drinks in his hands, two very stiff Rum and cokes, Jacob’s favorite.
“Here.” Jacob offered, handing him the glass.
“What is this?” Michael asked, sniffing the drink suspiciously.
“Rum and Coke my friend drink up. You’ll feel a whole lot better.”
Shaking his head Michael replied adamantly, “I can’t take this I’m sorry.”
“Why it’s not likely you’ll be drinking and driving you live upstairs now?” Jacob asked confused.
“I don’t drink, ah I don’t handle booze very well.” Michael explained, then apologized, “Sorry.”
“Hey it’s cool. Just more for me.” Jacob said shrugging his shoulder. He took a seat next to Michael and after putting down the drinks on the empty seat beside him asked, “So come on tell me what happen with you and Yolanda this evening before the party?”
“I kissed her.” Michael answered sounding like it was the worst thing he could’ve done.
“So she wasn’t responsive? Did she slap you? Confess that she was an lesbian what?”
“A lesbian?” Michael asked horrified.
“Well you never know these days I mean I had this one Ex-girlfriend-“
“Jacob, please I’m not really up to one of your tangents right now.” Michael interrupted; hating that he may of hurt Jacob’s feelings, but right now he and his road killed heart didn’t care.
Jacob nodded his head, obviously he wasn’t shattered at all as if he knew and accepted that he can be a real blabber mouth and said, “No I understand it’s just…well I hardly think Maria from watching her this evening is handling your assumptions very well.”
“My assumptions!” Michael exclaimed shaking his head, thinking this guy had some nerve thinking he knows what the hell is going on, and trying to play the understanding buddy and trying to help when he has no idea what has been going on in Michael’s life before Jacob met him. “Listen no offense but I hardly think you know the situation of what’s going on to be offering advice.”
“Listen, I understand that maybe you and Yolanda had a very passionate time together at one point of your lives, and that things ended maybe not so pleasant, yet you two have manage to become friends again. However, it’s written on your face that you haven’t quite gotten over her yet.” Jacob began, giving Michael a sidelong glance. Michael was at this moment looking at Jacob in awe. This guy wasn’t very far off the mark. Jacob gave him a half smile and added, “Its also written on Lana’s face that maybe she too still has some very strong feelings for you.”
“You’re wrong there Jacob.” Michael disagreed, shaking his head, “She pulled away, I could see the regret on her face! She didn’t even say anything! When she did it was, ’What was that? What was that? She has not changed at all Jacob.”
“Maybe she has and you’re letting the past hide what she was really thinking.” Jacob offered.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Michael asked, not quite sure where Jacob is going with this.
Jacob sighed and firmly put a hand on Michael’s shoulder and said, “Maybe Lana’s regret was of someone who realized that she had feelings for a certain friend and that a certain kiss made all those feelings break out of a very sealed and forgotten part of her heart. That, that kiss made her regret all the time wasted on trying to run from those feelings.”
Jacob’s words began to sink into Michael’s brain. Was Jacob right? Was Michael jumping to conclusions? Did Maria still love him?
“Just look at her Raymond.” He heard Jacob say.
Michael raised his lowered head and scans the crowd. When he spotted Maria talking to a group of people, he couldn’t help but smile. God but she did look beautiful tonight. Maria always looked beautiful. She could be in sweats and a T-shirt and he would find her attractive. As if she could feel him watching her, Maria looked his way and locked her eyes with his. It was sad, apologetic; it was filled with love…love for him.
“Jacob how did you know-I mean you can be just too freaky for words.” Michael replied his eyes never left Maria’s. She was smiling; her eyes now filled with hope.
“I told you I have good instincts.” Jacob said laughing, then added, “Go to her Raymond. Don’t mess this…well I don’t know what number this chance is for you guys, just but don’t mess it up.”
Michael laughed and turned to look at Jacob. “I won’t and Thanks.”
“Yeah well I don’t like seeing people unhappy.” Was all Jacob said before he got up from the chair and walked away?
With a sigh Michael raised from his own chair and looked up to see that Maria was still watching him. He began to walk towards her and Maria’s smile grew bigger with each step closer he got.
The distractions in the room faded. All that he could see was her. He loved the way she was looking at him right now. Probably the way he was looking at her. With need, want, love, almost as if it was for the first time all over again.
“If memory serves me right, I’m suppose to dance with you the whole evening.” Michael said smiling, his hand held out for her to take.
“I believe you’re right.” Maria concurred taking his outstretch hand. Michael began to walk backwards she followed him, their eyes still locked with no sign of averting in any other direction.
Their bodies instantly melded perfectly with each other. His hands were wrapped around her waist, she decided to prop hers loosely around his neck. They slowly swayed to the music that was bearly heard in the background. Not that it mattered; they probably would’ve dance even if there weren’t any accompaniment.
They danced in silence for a while, looking at each other, smiling shyly, wondering what exactly what was next that they were suppose to do. They shouldn’t be strangers with one another. They knew each other intimately; they’ve already been past the awkward first getting to know each other stage.
Yet here they were all tingly with anticipation on this new phase of their ever-going romance. It was kind of exciting actually, to love Maria again he knew she was not the same person, and she knew he has changed too. Traveling together on the run in a beat up van told them both that.
“I’m sorry.” They both said simultaneously, laughing at their same train of thought.
“I should have listen to you.” Michael said softly, and added, “It was wrong to jump to conclusions.”
“Yeah well I didn’t help matters by acting all weirded out.” Maria offered, then quickly added, “I mean it was in a good way.”
“I know.” Michael said softly, raising a hand to the back of her neck and slowly caressed her there.
“So how silly are we?” Maria asked with a small laugh.
“Very.” Michael asked.
“You always believed in us Michael didn’t you?” Maria asked, and added, “ I mean you always knew that this day would come.”
“Honestly?” He asked looking at her, she nodded, and he slowly shook his head, “I never had a clue, I just kind of had a lot of hope that it would work out in the end.”
“Well it did because it was suppose too and Liz had a hand in it.” She replied softly, resting her face on his chest. He sighed contently and pulled her closer if that was possible, inhaling her floral scent hair. Thinking that thing’s couldn’t get any better than this.
“What has Liz got to do with this?” Michael asked, enjoying this moment.
“Well her vision of this town, the community center.” Maria replied, lifting her head to look at him, her face was relaxing contently, she was happy. Then added after placing a soft gentle kiss on his lips, “This little mission of ours forced us to realize what we really mean to each other.”
“Oh crap.” Michael thought to himself, realizing that he was so caught up in everything he had forgotten how they came to have this mission in the first place. He begged Liz to pretend to have a vision, lie to Max until they were far enough from Ashland where they wouldn’t turn back. Yeah Liz did this favor for him but she warn Michael that he had to tell Maria what he did. Otherwise she may never forgive him and all of this would be for nothing. He needs to tell her now. God he should have never even concocted this plan.
“Are you alright Michael?” Maria asked suddenly. The swaying stopped, and he realizes she was staring up at him with concern. God he was a mess whenever he looked into those big brown eyes of hers
“Ah well there’s something I need…”
He never got to finish his sentence. Jacob, who somehow found his way near them said suddenly, “That man has some nerve coming here.”
Michael and Maria turned to face Jacob, who was angrily eyeing someone near the REC. Room door. They in turn followed his stare and a guy in probably his late thirties, dressed up in which looks like to be a very expensive suit was shaking hands and mingling away with some of the board members.
“Jacob is that who I think it is?” Maria asked, her hand grabbing Michael’s.
Jacob shook his head and said in disgust, “Yeah the pain in my ass him self Eric Cole.”
