Chapter 11: Meet the Parents…and Isabel part 2
“Liz, are you ready to go yet? They’re on their way to the restaurant now!” Max called from the living room. After watching the movie Max had left to get ready while Liz dropped Heather off at Maria’s house, who gave her a mischievous smile before letting her go.
“Yes! You sound like my father or something,” Liz said, laughing as she came out of her bedroom adorned in a plain black skirt and pretty lavender top. She decided to wear her hair straight and put some earrings in, “do I look alright?”
“You look perfect, now, let’s go!” Max said, putting his arm around her waist and leading them to his car.
“Nervous?” Max asked as they sat in the car outside Red Lobster. Liz took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
“Maybe a bit, Isabel sort of intimidates me, and I’ve never met your parents before, though I’m sure they’re wonderful,” Liz added in quickly. Max’s face lit up with a small smile and he put his hand on her cheek.
“Don’t worry about Isabel, and my parents will love you the moment they set eyes on you,” Max reassured her before they got out of the car and hand in hand walked in the restaurant.
“I’m meeting my family here…” Max began to say. The seating attendant looked down on her list and smiled, motioning for them to follow her.
“Mom! Dad! Izzy!” Max exclaimed, hugging his parents and Isabel. Liz stood awkwardly to the side as they exchanged their hellos. Max turned around and putting his hand around her waist dragged her forward a bit, “this is Liz Parker.”
“Liz! Finally I meet you after about 2 weeks of hearing Max talk about you I was getting quite anxious. I now see why he likes you so much,” Max’s mother said, smiling and giving her a small hug. Liz pulled back a small blush on her face.
“Thank you Mrs. Evans,” Liz said, smiling.
“No, none of that Mrs. stuff, call me Diane,” she replied.
“I’m Philip, Max’s dad, nice to meet you Liz; you’re a very lovely woman,” Philip said, shaking her hand. Liz smiled in return as Isabel stepped up.
“I’ve met you before, so I guess I’ll just say hi,” Isabel said, her arms folded across her chest, her mouth twitching ever so slightly at the corners.
“Hi Isabel, nice to see you again,” Liz politely replied. She was going to try to get along with Isabel for Max’s sake.
They all sat down around the table, Liz between Diane and Max, and facing Philip and Isabel.
“So Liz, dear, I heard that you have a child,” Diane said casually after their food was ordered.
“Yes, actually, her name is Heather, she’s 5, would you like to see a picture?” Liz asked.
“Absolutely!” Diane replied enthusiastically as Liz took out her wallet and showed her various baby pictures and recent pictures, “she’s so adorable! She looks so much like you except….for her hair, it’s a brilliant color of blonde, almost like Izzy’s here,” Diane said, handing the pictures back. Max noticed Liz slightly stiffening as she put her pictures away.
“Um, yeah, it’s her…father’s,” Liz replied, giving a small smile, “he’s…dead.”
“You poor thing!” Philip said from across the table, and Diane took her hand, while Isabel just rolled her eyes.
“No, it’s ok,” Liz said, trying to laugh it off, never liking this subject much. Max placed an arm around her for reassurance and smiled at her. He knew she was hiding something, but he wasn’t’ going to pester her about it.
By the end of their meal Liz had come to adore Max’s parents. As for Isabel…well, she had the feeling Isabel still didn’t like her much.
“It was sooooo nice to meet you! I hope to see you again soon Liz dear, goodnight!” Diane said, kissing Liz’s cheek. Liz blushed and said goodbye to everyone else before heading off with Max towards his car.
“That was fun,” Liz stated as they pulled out of the parking lot.
“I told you it would be, sorry about Isabel though, she’s always been more protective and such of me,” Max said, placing his hand over hers.
“It’s fine, now, as for you meeting my parents…that may be a while, I guarantee they won’t warm up to you as easily, they’ve never liked my boyfriends much, especially not Justin,” Liz said without realizing what she had said until after it had escaped her mouth.
“Justin? Is that Heather’s father?” Max asked curiously.
“N…never mind about him,” Liz stuttered out. Max furrowed his brows but restrained from delving further into it.
“Liz, I think it’s my time that you saw my place, I’ve been over to your apartment so many times, and you’ve never even seen my house,” Max suggested.
“I think that would be cool,” Liz said as he got off the exit towards his house. 10 minutes later they pulled up in front of a small ranch and Liz got out of the car.
“Home sweet home,” Max said, gesturing to the house with his hands while smiling.
Liz smiled in return and followed him to his doorstep while he unlocked it.
“Wow, nice place!” Liz exclaimed, walking around the ornately furnished place.
“Yeah…Tess’ decorating,” Max replied, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. She had left abruptly; not taking any of her stuff, so Max had to pack it all up, not wanting to be reminded of her anymore.
“Well, she had good taste,” Liz complimented, turning around and smiling at Max, “how about a movie…something other than Shrek?”
“Sounds wonderful, I’ll pop some popcorn, and why don’t you pick out a movie, they’re underneath the TV,” Max said, taking her coat and putting it on a coat rack before heading to the kitchen.
Liz walked slowly to the living room, taking the place in as she walked. She opened the door of a small shelf under the TV and examined the movies. Finally deciding on Nightmare on Elm Street, she plopped down on the couch and looked at some of the pictures on the green walls.
There were pictures of Max as a kid, Max and his family, and there was one that froze Liz’s eyes on it for a second. It was a picture of Max standing next to a petite blonde female. They were both smiling and looked very much in love. She only broke out of her trance when Max walked out and, noticing where her attention was focused, turned the picture over.
“I was meaning to take that down, great movie pick!” Max said, smiling at her and putting the DVD in before sitting down next to her, the bowl of popcorn in his lap as he turned the lights off, “I’m surprised you picked it, most girls hate scary movies.”
“I’m not most girls,” Liz said in reply, smiling at him and then averting her eyes to the movie.
