Chapter 11: Meet the Parents…and Isabel part 2

“Liz, are you ready to go yet? They’re on their way to the restaurant now!” Max called from the living room. After watching the movie Max had left to get ready while Liz dropped Heather off at Maria’s house, who gave her a mischievous smile before letting her go.

“Yes! You sound like my father or something,” Liz said, laughing as she came out of her bedroom adorned in a plain black skirt and pretty lavender top. She decided to wear her hair straight and put some earrings in, “do I look alright?”

“You look perfect, now, let’s go!” Max said, putting his arm around her waist and leading them to his car.

“Nervous?” Max asked as they sat in the car outside Red Lobster. Liz took a deep breath and closed her eyes.

“Maybe a bit, Isabel sort of intimidates me, and I’ve never met your parents before, though I’m sure they’re wonderful,” Liz added in quickly. Max’s face lit up with a small smile and he put his hand on her cheek.

“Don’t worry about Isabel, and my parents will love you the moment they set eyes on you,” Max reassured her before they got out of the car and hand in hand walked in the restaurant.

“I’m meeting my family here…” Max began to say. The seating attendant looked down on her list and smiled, motioning for them to follow her.

“Mom! Dad! Izzy!” Max exclaimed, hugging his parents and Isabel. Liz stood awkwardly to the side as they exchanged their hellos. Max turned around and putting his hand around her waist dragged her forward a bit, “this is Liz Parker.”

“Liz! Finally I meet you after about 2 weeks of hearing Max talk about you I was getting quite anxious. I now see why he likes you so much,” Max’s mother said, smiling and giving her a small hug. Liz pulled back a small blush on her face.

“Thank you Mrs. Evans,” Liz said, smiling.

“No, none of that Mrs. stuff, call me Diane,” she replied.

“I’m Philip, Max’s dad, nice to meet you Liz; you’re a very lovely woman,” Philip said, shaking her hand. Liz smiled in return as Isabel stepped up.

“I’ve met you before, so I guess I’ll just say hi,” Isabel said, her arms folded across her chest, her mouth twitching ever so slightly at the corners.

“Hi Isabel, nice to see you again,” Liz politely replied. She was going to try to get along with Isabel for Max’s sake.

They all sat down around the table, Liz between Diane and Max, and facing Philip and Isabel.

“So Liz, dear, I heard that you have a child,” Diane said casually after their food was ordered.

“Yes, actually, her name is Heather, she’s 5, would you like to see a picture?” Liz asked.

“Absolutely!” Diane replied enthusiastically as Liz took out her wallet and showed her various baby pictures and recent pictures, “she’s so adorable! She looks so much like you except….for her hair, it’s a brilliant color of blonde, almost like Izzy’s here,” Diane said, handing the pictures back. Max noticed Liz slightly stiffening as she put her pictures away.

“Um, yeah, it’s her…father’s,” Liz replied, giving a small smile, “he’s…dead.”

“You poor thing!” Philip said from across the table, and Diane took her hand, while Isabel just rolled her eyes.

“No, it’s ok,” Liz said, trying to laugh it off, never liking this subject much. Max placed an arm around her for reassurance and smiled at her. He knew she was hiding something, but he wasn’t’ going to pester her about it.

By the end of their meal Liz had come to adore Max’s parents. As for Isabel…well, she had the feeling Isabel still didn’t like her much.

“It was sooooo nice to meet you! I hope to see you again soon Liz dear, goodnight!” Diane said, kissing Liz’s cheek. Liz blushed and said goodbye to everyone else before heading off with Max towards his car.

“That was fun,” Liz stated as they pulled out of the parking lot.

“I told you it would be, sorry about Isabel though, she’s always been more protective and such of me,” Max said, placing his hand over hers.

“It’s fine, now, as for you meeting my parents…that may be a while, I guarantee they won’t warm up to you as easily, they’ve never liked my boyfriends much, especially not Justin,” Liz said without realizing what she had said until after it had escaped her mouth.

“Justin? Is that Heather’s father?” Max asked curiously.

“N…never mind about him,” Liz stuttered out. Max furrowed his brows but restrained from delving further into it.

“Liz, I think it’s my time that you saw my place, I’ve been over to your apartment so many times, and you’ve never even seen my house,” Max suggested.

“I think that would be cool,” Liz said as he got off the exit towards his house. 10 minutes later they pulled up in front of a small ranch and Liz got out of the car.

“Home sweet home,” Max said, gesturing to the house with his hands while smiling.

Liz smiled in return and followed him to his doorstep while he unlocked it.

“Wow, nice place!” Liz exclaimed, walking around the ornately furnished place.

“Yeah…Tess’ decorating,” Max replied, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. She had left abruptly; not taking any of her stuff, so Max had to pack it all up, not wanting to be reminded of her anymore.

“Well, she had good taste,” Liz complimented, turning around and smiling at Max, “how about a movie…something other than Shrek?”

“Sounds wonderful, I’ll pop some popcorn, and why don’t you pick out a movie, they’re underneath the TV,” Max said, taking her coat and putting it on a coat rack before heading to the kitchen.

Liz walked slowly to the living room, taking the place in as she walked. She opened the door of a small shelf under the TV and examined the movies. Finally deciding on Nightmare on Elm Street, she plopped down on the couch and looked at some of the pictures on the green walls.

There were pictures of Max as a kid, Max and his family, and there was one that froze Liz’s eyes on it for a second. It was a picture of Max standing next to a petite blonde female. They were both smiling and looked very much in love. She only broke out of her trance when Max walked out and, noticing where her attention was focused, turned the picture over.

“I was meaning to take that down, great movie pick!” Max said, smiling at her and putting the DVD in before sitting down next to her, the bowl of popcorn in his lap as he turned the lights off, “I’m surprised you picked it, most girls hate scary movies.”

“I’m not most girls,” Liz said in reply, smiling at him and then averting her eyes to the movie.

Chapter 12: Eraser Room

“Heather! It’s time for bed!” Liz exclaimed a few days later as her daughter refused to go to bed.

“I want to watch Sesame Street!!!” she whined, giving a pouty face. Liz sighed and tapped her foot, arms crossed with a no-nonsense look on her face.

“Young lady, you will go to bed now!” Liz said, pointing towards Heather’s door. So far the age 5 was worse than her toddler years, and that was saying something! Now that she was older, Heather was slowly turning more independent and defiant, though still sweet as ever most of the time.

“Fine,” Heather said, slouching off to her room.

“Baby you know I don’t like yelling at you, but you have school in the morning, and you need your rest if you want to grow big and strong like mommy,” Liz said, kissing Heather’s forehead once she was settled in.

“I’m sowwy mommy, love you,” Heather said, closing her eyes.

“Love you sweetie,” Liz replied, smoothing back Heather’s hair and quietly walking out.

“Save me big brother!” Liz exclaimed, falling onto her older brother, Alex on the couch as they watched CSI.

“Sorry, I can’t help you there, me and Serena haven’t really gotten to that step in our marriage,” Alex said, fixing the pillow beneath Liz’s head.

“Well….next time, could you please not ring the doorbell? That was what woke her up,” Liz said, but a smile on her face revealed that she wasn’t mad at him.

“I’ll try…it’ll be hard though, and tiring, and it’ll probably make me hungry, come to think of it, thinking about it makes me hungry? Got any Thai food?” Alex asked as his stomach grumbled.

“Yup, hold on,” Liz said going into the fridge and taking out the leftovers from this night’s meal. She dumped Alex’s favorite foods onto the plate and grabbed a couple packets of hot sauce, before waling back out to the living room and placing them in front of him on the coffee table.

“OOOOO! Yum,” Alex said, drenching the food in the sauce and digging in. Liz rolled her eyes and went to answer the door as someone knocked.

“Max! Glad you knocked, Alex over there refuses to knock,” Liz said, leaning on her tip toes to receive his kiss.

“I’ve never used doorbells, they are annoying,” Max said, stepping inside with Liz and waling out to the living room.

“Hey Alex, I promise to have Liz back by…2 a.m.” Max said, grinning. Alex gave him a thumbs up in between shoveling food into his mouth.

Max placed his hand on the small of her back and led her outside where they walked to the school.

There was a teacher’s party being held, and they were allowed to bring dates, so Max asked Liz to spare him from a night of boring teacher talk.

“I warn you…I’m one of the more interesting teachers here,” Max said as they stepped inside.

“That’s what you think,” Liz teased as Max guided the both of them down the long hallways towards the gymnasium.

“Snore!” Max exclaimed, downing his 5th cup of punch in the last hour. Liz almost sprayed her punch all over Max at his exclamation of boredom. This party was boring, with retro 70’s music and a lame food table. Most of the teachers were talking math and science, Max and Liz being the only ones to attempt to dance, giving up after everyone started to stare at them.

“I agree,” Liz agreed, stuffing a chip with ranch in her mouth to keep her hands occupied. She glanced at the clock, only 10:30.

“I have someplace we can go that is waaaay more interesting than this place…this building used to be a high school, and I happened to attend thus school, so I know all the little tricks of it,” Max said with a grin, leading her out of the gym and upstairs to a small room.

“Eraser room?” Liz asked as they stepped inside and Max locked the door.

“Yes, but no one really cleans erasers in here, at least the middle school students don’t, the elementary kids might,” Max said, pushing Liz up against the wall and kissing her deeply. Since their date with Max’s family, they had done A LOT of kissing, and more than that.

Liz snaked her arms around Max’s neck and opened her mouth, granting him further access.

“You’re so beautiful,” Max murmured against the skin of her shoulder as he pushed aside her dress strap to kiss it.

“This is waaaay better than that par…party,” Liz gasped as Max began to suck and nip at her sensitive collarbone.

Knock, knock, knock!

“Ignore it,” Max groaned, capturing her mouth in a heated kiss.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!!!

“Damn it! Who’s there?” Max grunted, fixing Liz’s dress.

“It’s the principal….the janitor needs to get in to clean the erasers…Mr. Evans, is that you?” the principal, Mr. Howard asked.

“Um…yes,” Max mumbled, stepping out of the room with Liz like a teenager being caught sneaking in past curfew.

But instead of scolding them, Mr. Howard just smiled and chuckled a bit.

“Boring party? Don’t blame you, go on home Max,” he said, chuckling as they scurried past him.

“That was embarrassing!” Liz said, laughing as they walked to her apartment.

“Nothing to be embarrassed about,” Max said, holding her hand in his. Liz smiled at him and pecked him on the cheek.

“I had a really nice time…at the end, see you tomorrow morning…Mr. Evans,” Liz said, when they reached her apartment. Max smiled mischievously at her and left for his car, and Liz walked into her apartment to find a sleeping, and snoring, Alex.

“Alex, bro, wake up…there’s hot sauce all over your shirt,” Liz said softly, giggling at his disheveled appearance. He grunted and started to stir, so she went to check on Heather, who was sleeping soundly.

“I’ll see ya sis, bye!” Alex called quietly.

“Bye!” Liz said, turning the TV off and cleaning up the mess before heading off to bed herself.

Chapter 13: The New Girl

“Mommy, I wanna wear my Barbie shirt!” Heather exclaimed, Liz trying to get her to put on a blue t-shirt. Liz sighed and dug through Heather’s dresser, taking out her favorite Barbie shirt and slipping it on her.

“Grab your lunch box sweetie!” Liz exclaimed, slipping into her flip flops and grabbing her purse. Heather went to the fridge and took out her lunch box and then quickly latched her hand in Liz’s. For once they were actually early, so they walked leisurely to the school.

“Adriana!!” Heather exclaimed, hugging Liz quickly before running off to play with her friend. Liz took this chance to talk to Max.

“Ma….Mr. Evans?” Liz said, correcting herself when she found another person in the room with Max.

“Hello Ms. Parker, take a seat and I’ll be with you in a moment,” Max said, subtly winking at her. Liz nodded her head and took a seat outside the classroom while Max discussed a child’s grades with the
parent.

Liz played with her fingernails while she waited, and a couple of minutes later, an angry parent came storming out of the classroom and Max called her in.

“You can come in now Ms. Parker,” Max called. Liz smiled and walked in, shutting the door behind her.

“Ms. Parker? I sound so old! I see that parent wasn’t very happy,” Liz said, sitting down in a chair across from Max.

“Well…her student hasn’t been exerting very good people skills…a major in kindergarten, she refuses to accept that…some parents just have a blind spot when it comes to their children,” Max shrugged. Liz nodded. She totally agreed,” So, what did you come by for?”

“I have two tickets that I won on the radio a week or so ago for a Gomez concert, and I was wondering if you would wish to join me?” Liz asked, flipping up two tickets that had been hidden in her purse. Max smiled at Liz and took one of the tickets to examine it.

“Sure, Gomez is awesome, thanks Liz,” Max said, taking a risk by quickly leaning forward and pecking her on the lips. Liz blushed and took the ticket back, placing it in her purse.

“So, I have to get to work, catch ya later sexy,” Liz said, grinning as she exited the classroom.

“Chica! Help me over here!” Maria exclaimed. Liz squealed and rushed over to her.

“Ria! You’re back! Work was so boring without you here!” Liz added in a whisper, noticing a few of the employees look their way.

“Yup, Michael’s watching the twins today. So…can you take these please? I have to go check the stock,” Maria said. Liz nodded and took the pile from Maria, walking over to a shelf to put them away.

“Hey, who’s that new girl?” Maria whispered as she pretended to check a stock list. Liz looked up, her hair falling in front of her eyes and gasped. The new girl was Tess. Max’s ex-girlfriend.

“Chica…what’s up?” Maria asked in a concerned tone as Liz seemed to space out for a second.

“Um…that’s Max’s EX-GIRLFRIEND,” Liz hissed into Maria’s ear, picking up a scarf she had dropped.

“Nuh uh!” Maria exclaimed, looking up at Tess, who was gazing at them.

“Maria!” Liz hissed quietly, tugging on her skirt.

“Oh…hehehe, ya…I’m Maria, nice to meet you….?” She asked, covering up by asking Tess her name.

“Tess Harding, nice to meet you Maria and….?” She questioned towards Liz. Liz stood up and straightened her hip huggers out. She could tell why Max had a thing for her. She was beautiful to say the least…if not a little bit slutty. Big cerulean eyes, perfect figure, curly blonde hair, the works. Tess raised a perfectly groomed eye brow at Liz, and she realized that she had been staring off into space.

“Sorry, um, Liz Parker,” Liz said, offering her hand. Tess shook it and smiled.

“Are you the one with that adorable daughter, the little girl in that picture?” Tess asked, pointing to a picture behind the counter.

“Yes I am,” Liz said, smiling warmly.

“Oh, so I assume you’re married?” Tess asked innocently.

“No, father…um died,” Liz said, clearing her throat and getting back to her assignment. Tess frowned and put a hand on Liz’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry, it must have been hard,” she quietly said. Liz glanced quickly at her and nodded before looking at Maria, who knew that this was all one big lie.

“Tess! Over here!” the senior employee, Serena, called from the other end of the room. Tess smiled a goodbye before walking towards Serena.

“She seems nice,” Maria pondered.

“I don’t trust her…Max obviously saw something in her…but I mean, they are not together anymore,” Liz shrugged off. Maria rolled her eyes and checked something off the list.

“Listen, I’m not going to make a big deal out of it Ria,” Liz started. Maria nodded and Liz sighed.

“Mommy! Can Adriana spend the night tomorrow?” Heather asked later that day when a very exhausted Liz came to pick her up.

“I’ll have to talk to her mommy sweet, go tell her to have her mommy wait with her until we get here tomorrow morning, I have to talk to your teacher right now,” Liz said, walking over to Max, who was at his desk.

“Mr. Evans….while I was at work I learned that there was a new employee…and would you like to guess who this employee was? Tess Harding!” Liz exclaimed as quietly as possible. Max raised an eyebrow at her and stood up abruptly.

“I have to talk to Ms. Parker outside, be back in a second, continue on your drawings,” Max said, leading Liz outside.

“Tess??? Did she say anything to you?” Max asked; his eyes full of concern.

“Um…ya, we exchanged greetings…but that’s all, nothing out of the ordinary,” Liz said. Max shook his head.

“Ok…I don’t think she knows who you are…and hopefully it’ll stay that way…we have to get back inside. I’ll see you tomorrow morning,” Max said, kissing her cheek before they walked back inside.

Liz took Heather’s hand and led her back home, an expression of confusion and worry on her face the whole way.

Chapter 14

“I don't know Ria…he acted, well odd I guess is the only word to describe it,” Liz sighed into the phone later that night as she sat on her couch watching the Late Show.

“Liz…maybe he just meant Tess was…I don't know, an insanely jealous ex who won’t get over him?” Maria suggested, knowing that it wouldn’t help any though; when Liz got a notion in her mind…she worked at it incessantly until she figured it out.

“Maybe…I’ll talk to him about it tomorrow morning, oh by the way, could you watch Heather and her friend Adriana at my place for a while Saturday night? Max and I are going to a concert, and Heather would be crushed if I made her cancel her sleepover, it is her first one and all,” Liz asked Maria, twirling the phone cord on her fingers as the show went to commercial.

“Absolutely, I’ll have Michael watch the twins,” Maria replied in a chipper voice. Liz smiled and inwardly thanked god that she had a friend that loved her daughter so much, and that her daughter was so loveable.

“You are awesome. I’m going to go to bed now, I’ll see you at work tomorrow babe, night,” Liz yawned into the phone.

“Bye Chica,” Maria replied. Liz pressed the end button and flipped the TV off, then did her usual check of the house, locking everything up and turning all of the lights off. She changed into her pajamas and went in Heather’s room to check on her only to find an empty bed.

Assuming she had crawled into her own bed she just quietly walked in and glanced at the bed. It was empty too.

“Oh God…Heather? Heather baby where are you?” Liz asked frantically asked, looking all over the apartment. When she found that she wasn’t anywhere in the rest of the house she went back into Heather’s room, tears blurring her vision and noticed for the first time that her window was cracked open.

”The fire escape!” she gasped. She had warned her daughter not to leave her window unlocked, in fear that someone could sneak up and take her, and now all her worst fears were coming alive.

Hopping out the window she glanced down the ladder but couldn’t see Heather anywhere. No coherent thoughts were gong through her minds and the only thing she could do was think of Max.

“C’mon pick up! Max! It’s…its Heather!” she sobbed frantically into the phone, “I…I can’t find her…her window was open…oh Max I’m an awful mother!”

“Liz…slow down sweetie…I’ll be right over,” Max said in the same tone of voice, hanging up. 5 minutes later he was banging on her door and Liz rushed forward to open it. Max looked at her and was shocked. The usually well groomed Liz was nothing but disheveled.

Her clothes were tearstained as well as her face and her makeup was streamed down her face, hair messed up…everything, but, he thought, he’d probably be the same way were this situation to be reversed on him.

Max immediately embraced her and she sobbed into his shoulder, “did you call the police?” he asked, stroking her hair.

“Yeah, they said…they should be here soon…Max how could I let this happen? I’m so awful Max…I let my daughter…my Heather…get kidnapped! I don’t deserve to live!” Liz wailed out, collapsing to the floor in her sobs.

Max kneeled down and picked her up, setting her on the couch, “don’t even say that, you are an excellent mother Liz, and nothing you did could have stopped this from happening, if someone wanted to break in, they would have done it, locked window or not,” Max said soothingly.

“Who would want to do this? Why hates me this much?” Liz asked hysterically. None of this made sense. Just a half hour ago she was chatting away on the phone with Maria and watching David Letterman.

The intense rapping at the door broke her line of thought and she scampered to the door, throwing it open.

“Ms. Parker, Heather is missing?” Sheriff Valenti asked, walking in.

“Oh Sheriff…she’s gone! Help me find her! Help me find the bastard who took her!” Liz exclaimed, her eyes pleading to the sheriff. A small smile formed on his lips.

“We’ll do all that we can Liz, now, we need you to give us a statement if it isn’t too much,” he replied.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Liz lay curled up in a tight ball on her bed, head in Max’s lap and fast asleep. She had finally drifted off after hours of sobs and restlessness and Max was gazing down at her.

What she was going through was awful, and he wouldn’t wish it on his worse enemy. He knew himself how his parents felt the one year that Isabel went missing, though she was just hiding in the shed the whole time, his parents were frantic, calling up a search party even.

He swore to the lord that he would do all that he could to help Liz find Heather. To ensure this he had called in to work telling them that he would be using 2 or 3 of his sick days, he would use as many as he could before getting fired to help Liz.

Finally letting sleep get the better of him Max closed his eyes and nodded off to sleep along with Liz
