Kyrie, you are crazy. My munchkins can SO kick your monkeys asses. And did you find Tess under the bed? Ha! I think not! ::evil cackle::. Btw, I did my part updating my fic, now go update yours!!
And for those of you who have yet to read Echo- I know you are smart people. I mean, what else would explain why you're reading this? So if you wanna be extra-doubly smart, go read Echo. The Tess in that fic may not be as bad as the one in mine, but the Dreamer in it is awesome and the storyline is brilliant. It is so interesting and compelling to read. I've been doing fics for a few years now, and I've seen some amazing fics from all over. This one caught me by suprise and it's been amazing. It was put on my amazing fics list at the first chapter. Kyrie does an amazing job.
Well, here's what y'all have been waiting for. Have a happy and safe holiday!!

Chapter 10

Max was left speechless.

Maria on the other hand, had plenty to say. “You bitch! You’ve been attacking my best friend in her dreams?!” She had the urge to give Tess the same melon sized bruise on her face. It took nearly all of Michael’s strength to keep his arms locked around her waist. He gladly would’ve let her go, but he had to see Max’s reaction.

‘What’s taking him so long?’ Liz thought. She expected him to blow a fuse, to tell Liz he was sorry, SOMETHING. Instead, he just stood there, staring at Tess’s abdomen.

Isabel, who had been sitting in the chair at the far corner of the room the entire time, stood up and walked over to Liz. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

Liz was in no forgiving mood. Her friends, practically her family, had turned their backs on her when she needed them. She wasn’t going to be typical Liz and give them a hug and shrug it off. Liz appreciated Isabel’s apology, but she still needed some time to work things out in her head.

Isabel understood. Part of her expected a hug from Liz, or an “it’s okay” from Liz. But Liz wasn’t the same Liz. She had changed a lot ever since Alex died. She had become more confident and outspoken. Isabel had been too busy being a bitch to notice.

“What now Max?” Isabel asked her brother.

“We have to get her out of here.”

“Like, blast her ass back to Antar?” Michael asked coldly.

Max turned to Michael. “She has to go somewhere safe.”

“What?! After everything she did to Liz, you’re concerned about her safety?! Do you not see the bruise on her?! Liz has been telling the truth all along!!” Michael yelled.

“I see the bruise Michael. But I also see my child in there.”

“What?!” Michael, Maria, and Isabel yelled.

“Max, what the hell are you talking about?!!” Maria yelled. “What child?! There is no child. The skank has a bruise on her. Where the hell do you see a child?!”

Max saw Tess’s stomach move. He placed a hand on her belly. “It’s my son.”

“You fucking bitch!” Maria cried. She broke free of Michael’s hold and ran at Tess, but before Maria could get to her, Max had thrown her to the wall with his telekinetic powers. Michael ran to her.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing Maxwell?” he bellowed. Maria stood up on her shaking legs, and rubbed the back of her head.

“I’m sorry, but I had to do it,” Max said. He took Tess’s hand and ran out of the kitchen door.

“Max!” Isabel screamed. She ran after him, but already found him and Tess speeding away in his Jeep. Isabel stormed in the house and took Maria’s keys.

“What’re you doing?” Michael asked.

“I’m going after Max.”

“No you’re not,” Liz said firmly.

“Excuse me? That’s my brother. I don’t know whatever issues you have with him, and frankly, I don’t care. Max is-“

“Being mind warped by Tess,” Liz interrupted. She turned to Isabel. “She mind warped him into seeing her pregnant. She has him under her control.”

“How do you know she mind warped Max?” Maria asked.

“She kept her eyes focused on him the entire time. She was concentrating on him. She didn’t need all of us to see it, just Max. She knew Max would protect her.”

“Tess can’t hold the mind warp for long,” Isabel stated. “Maybe an hour at the most. We have to find him. He won’t know what’s going on once his mind is out from her control.”

“We need to split up,” Liz said, getting accustomed to her new take-charge position. “Isabel and Michael-you go find Max and Tess. One of you will need to get Max and catch him up, one will need to take care of Tess and get her back here.”

“What about you two?” Michael inquired. “Neither of you have-“

Liz interrupted by blowing up a garden gnome on the front lawn.

“Oh,” Michael replied shortly.

“Maria and I will stay here, in case one of them comes back. Is that okay Isabel?”

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

Michael and Maria stepped outside for a moment, giving Isabel a chance to talk to Liz.

“Thanks Liz.”

“For what?” Liz asked her.

“For not saying “I told you so”. Even though I deserved it.”

Liz let down her defenses and gave Isabel a hug. “Thanks for not being a bitch during the whole “not believing me” thing.”

“I’m really sorry Liz.”

“I know.” Liz sighed, relieved to have Isabel back on her side. “Kick her ass hard for me, k?”

Isabel chuckled. “You got it.”

Maria stepped back in the house, quickly wiping the corners of her mouth. She cleared her throat. “Ahem. Uhm, Michael is ready to go.”

Isabel nodded. “Be careful,“ she said before opening the door.

“You too,” Liz replied.

“Now what?” Maria asked Liz.

“Now we wait.”

An hour and half passed and still no word from the group. Maria was in the lounge chair meditating to a Dido CD. Liz half sat, half lied on the couch. Her cell was in the coffee table in front of her. Her eyes were fixated on the door. She could feel her eyelids growing heavier by the second. ‘Isabel and Michael better hurry back soon,’ she though, ‘because I can’t stay awake much longer.’

Chapter 11

“Michael! It’s him. It’s his Jeep. Pull over,” Isabel ordered. They were in the parking lot of Motel 6. Isabel jumped out of the car.

“Isabel, wait!” Michael ran to catch up. “We can’t just go in there. We need a plan.”

“Ok. You get Max, I’ll handle Tess.”

“No, no that’s not smart. If she’s got him controlled to protect her…”

“Then she can use Max as her own personal weapon.”

Michael sat on the hood of the Jetta. “So what do we do now?”

The nervous habit of biting her nails hit Isabel. When she realized it, she quickly passed her hand over her nails until they were back to being perfect. “What if I can break her connection? I mean, it’s gotta be wearing pretty thin anyways. If I can get in her mind, distract her somehow, then it could break her mind warp on him, and you can get him out of there.” Isabel rummaged around through her purse and grabbed her cell. She dialed the number on the motel’s sign. “Hello? Yes, I was seeing about a couple that just checked in recently. The girl had blonde, curly hair. Her face similar to that of a gerbil’s. Room 47? Thank you.”

“I would’ve said an electrocuted chipmunk, but gerbil was good. You sure you can do it? She’s not asleep.”

“I can do it,” Isabel said brashly.

Michael hopped off the hood. “Okay. Good luck.”

Isabel took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “Okay, Tess. Here we go.” Instantly, Isabel found the connection. ‘What to do, what to do. Oh I know!’ Isabel sent images of Max and Liz. Max and Liz groping each other on the couch. Max and Liz making out in the back room of the Crashdown. Liz strattled on Max’s lap, with his hands on her ass. Max calling Liz’s name and moaning in his sleep-that one got her big time. Isabel could feel Tess’s anger like it was the air surrounding her. ‘Come on Michael, come on.’ Isabel kept sending out images. When she knew Michael and Max were out, she sent one last final image-just to piss Tess off. It was an image from one of Max’s dreams that Isabel had visited. A completely nude Max on top of a naked Liz. It wasn’t something Isabel cared to see at the time-she actually couldn’t look at Max or Liz for two days following. Since then, she hadn’t roamed in Max’s dreams-for fear of seeing more.

“Isabel, I got him!” Michael yelled. “Let’s go!”

Isabel shook her head out of her vindictive reverie. “I’ll take Max’s Jeep, you fill him in.”

***
“Liz! Liz, don’t fall asleep!” Maria frantically yelled into Liz’s ear.

“My God Maria. Think you can be louder?”

“Sorry, I just didn’t want you getting hurt or anything.”

“It’s cool. Thanks. What time is it?”

“A little after 2 a.m.”

“No word from anyone?”

“No. You look really tired Liz. One minute you’re wide awake, the next you’re falling asleep.”

“It’s not like I can sleep Maria. It’s the whole someone-trying-to-kill-me that’s keeping me up.”

“I know. I wish I could do something.”

“Thanks. They should be back by n-“

Michael knocked on the door roughly. It jerked open and he was greeted by Liz, her hand was up in attack mode.”

“Chill, Rogue,” he stepped through the door, followed by Max, then Isabel. “Or would it be that Dr. Jean Grey woman?” He flopped on the couch. “Whatever.”

Maria ran to him and strattled his lap, kissing him all over his face and neck.

“Oh, God. Stop! Please! Wait ‘til we’re out of the room first,” Isabel said, quickly averting her eyes.

“Hey guys, I’m gonna drive Liz home and watch over her.” Max spoke to everyone but Liz.

“I don’t need you to look over me Max.”

“What happens if you fall asleep?” he asked. “Plus, we need to talk.”

“Fun,” she said sarcastically. “I’ll talk to you later Maria. Thanks Isabel. You too, Michael.” Liz walked out of the door, into the Jeep.

They arrived at the Crashdown. Liz unlocked the door and walked in, without holding the door open. She turned off the lamps and went upstairs. She dropped her keys on the foyer table while walking by. She opened the door to her room, leaving it open and walked to her terrace. She sat in a chair and looked at Max.

“So, what do you want to talk about?” she asked.

Max kept his voice hushed so her parents wouldn’t hear. “I’m sorry,” he told her.

Liz laughed harshly. “First of all, my parents aren’t here, so you can stop whispering. Secondly, fuck you!”

“I know you don’t believe me Liz, but I desperately want you to know how sorry I am.”

“Funny thing about that Max, I don’t give a fuck anymore. I don’t! Maybe if you had said it a month ago I would’ve crawled into your arms and said how it was ok. But fuck that! I’ve endured months off hell and all I ever wanted was for you to believe me. You never did! You ran to a bitch’s arms instead of mine! You didn’t know her and you sided with her over me! Because why?! Because she was fucking goddamn alien like you! I think nothing of your apology. It means absolutely shit to me.”

Max walked over and kissed her.

Liz pulled her bead back, and slapped him hard across the face. She looked into his eyes. Wanting him. Craving his body. She didn’t care that she was doing this. That she had begun kissing him. That her lips parted and allowed his tongue access. He didn’t deserve to carry her to her bed, but she allowed it of him. He didn’t deserve to undo her blouse, unzip her jeans, or gaze at her black lace thong and then hungrily pull them off of her. He lost the rights to her body a long time ago, but she was permitting her to him.

She loved him unclasping her bra, taking one of her ecstasy-swollen breasts into his mouth and twirling his tongue around until she neared insanity. She enjoyed stripping him of his clothes in an animal fashioned. She loved hearing him groan as he grinded against her, aching to enter her center. And when she parted her legs for him, she loved the sensations she got from his visceral thrusts. But she hated herself for loving it.

She knew he should’ve never been granted this, but she didn’t care. Their sex was fueled out of anger. Anger on her part. She would have him and claim him as hers. No other woman would be able to screw him like she did. She made sure of it.

Morning arose upon them. Liz got up, showered and began dressing when Max woke up.

“Good morning,” he said sincerely.

He was greeted with silence.

“Last night was amazing Liz.”

“You can go now,” she informed him. “I have to open up for my shift.”

“Why are you being like this?!” he asked, taken aback by her cold attitude.

“Last night doesn’t change anything,” she said coolly.

“But Liz…we made love.”

“We didn’t make love, we fucked. If you want to go make love with someone, do it with Tess. I’m sure she’s willing to lay down and give as much love as you want.” Liz grabbed her apron off of the closet door and walked out, closing the bedroom door behind her.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback-it means a lot to me! ~Jenn

Chapter 12

Liz arrived back from the store to find Max gone. She closed her eyes, knowing how much pain she caused him. Part of her felt he deserved it after the way he had been treating her. Part of her felt that an apology could never be enough. The other part of her loved him with so much of her heart and soul.

“Hey hey girlie girl!! What’s goin’ on?!” Maria’s voice squealed when he came in.

“Uhm, nothing much Maria,” Liz said in a less enthusiastic voice. “So I take it you and Michael had some awesome morning sex?”

“Oh my God Liz! It was…amazing, to say the least.”

“That’s…that’s awesome,” Liz said. She let down her hair to cover the sides of her face. Liz never knew what the “after glow” really was until this morning. She was sure Maria would know and Liz did not want that happening.

“How long are we on today? Cause I need some sleep.”

“I think just until 10,” Liz replied. She knew what Maria meant. Liz hadn’t slept in so long. But she couldn’t afford to sleep. Not at the chance of risking her life.

“Hey Liz. Why aren’t you looking at me?”

“What? What do you mean Maria?” She turned around to put dishes on the shelves.

“That! You keep avoiding me!” Maria turned her around. “Liz! You-you didn’t! With who?!”

“With the hobo outsi—WHO DO YOU THINK MARIA?!” Lix threw her hands up in the air in frustration.

“Oh my God! Oh my God! I mean, OH MY GOD!! Liz! Wh-Why?! He’s such an asshole! Did he- did he make you do anything Liz?” Maria had her hands on Liz’s shoulders; a concerned look adorned her face.

Liz stepped back. “No! He didn’t make me do anything. It was my choice.”

“But why Liz?! After all he’s done to you!!”

“Because I have wants too Maria! It’s been so long since I could touch him and hold him. I wanted that. Not my head, but my body did. And maybe a little bit of my heart.”

Maria sighed. In all her years, she’s never understood Max and Liz’s love. She’ll probably never get it. It was just something they had and knew while no one else did. “Was it good at least?”

“It was…I can’t even describe it.”

“Good or bad at least?”

“Definitely well above good.”

**3 hours later**

“Liz, heads up,” Maria informed.

Liz looked towards the door to see Max and Isabel coming in.

“You want me to handle him?” Maria asked.

“No, I’ll take care of him,” Liz sighed. She sent him an angry look and cocked her head towards the back, indicating for him to follow her.

Max caught the angry glare in her eyes. But he took her invitation to talk in the back as a sign of hope.

“Hey,” he told her feebly.

“What do you want Max?” She was not in the mood for small talk.

“Liz, I know you’re not going to believe me. I know you’re going to push me away. And I deserve it. I have been an ass to you over these past few months and I can’t make excuses for it. You have no reason to trust me. I should’ve been more than a friend. And you’re right-I shouldn’t have let the fact that she was one of us cloud my judgment. Or my heart. I never stopped loving you Liz. I pushed you away, and I was a bastard to you. But it hurt me to do it. I wanted to run back to you. I wanted to take you in my arms again.”

“The why didn’t you?! Why didn’t you Max? Why did you push me away? Why did you put her over me? It hurt so much to see you with her. You have caused me so much pain and I can’t take it anymore! I won’t take it anymore. I can’t keep falling in love with you. Because my heart can’t take it. I want to love you. God, I desperately do. I want to trust you. But we can’t go back to the way things were. You made your decision when you slept with her. I can forgive you Max. But I can’t let it go. I can’t forget.”

“Liz, please. We’ll take things slow. We’ll go back to being friends. But we have to try this again. We can’t just let go. You can’t just give up on me.”

“Why not? You did. You have to choose between me or your destiny Max.”

Max stopped himself from saying anything back. A sense of clarity washed over him. God, what has he done to her over these past months? He didn’t deserve to have her back. She was right. She had always been right. “You’re right Liz,” he said softly. “I want you to be happy. You deserve to be happy. I can’t do that anymore. I lost my chance a long time ago. I love you Liz. I love you more than I could ever love anyone else. I look at you, and I see what I want to be. I see my future through you. I will never love anyone with as much of myself as I do you. You ask me to choose between you or my destiny. But Liz, you are my destiny. You’re my life. You’re more than any man could ever deserve. All I want for you now is happiness. And if I can’t give that to you, then I want someone else to.”

Tears welled up in both of their eyes. This was their goodbye. This was their ending. They both knew it was over. It had to be. For her sake.

“I need you Max.”

“No you don’t. Not anymore. You’re strong. If ever you want me back, you know where I’ll be. I’ll wait for you. Like you waited for me. And if you find what you want in someone else, then I’ll let you go.”

“Don’t let me go Max. Don’t ever let me go. I don’t know if I can find happiness without you. I don’t know if I can find love. But right now, I can’t be with you. I won’t allow myself to come back to you. Not until I’m ready. And I don’t know if I ever will be ready.”

“I won’t stop loving you. I’ll always be here.”

“I know. But it’s not enough. It’s not enough to have me back. When I’m ready, I’ll come back.”

“Will we still see each other? Can we at least be friends?”

Tears streamed down her face. “We need a lot of time apart. It’s just me now. Being around you, without being with you-it’s unbearable. I’d give in too easily. I don’t want to give in. Not yet.”

“Do you think you can ever love me again?”

“I’ll always love you. I always have loved you. I’ve been here this entire time. But I can’t go back. If ever we were to work things out, we’d have to take it slow. I don’t know when we’ll work things out. Not for a long while. Maybe not…” She trailed off. Afraid to say the word.

“Ever,” Max completed sorrowfully.

“I really am sorry Liz. I’m sorry for ever causing you all this. But I’m not sorry for getting in your life. You’re the best thing that could ever happen to me. Meeting you was my salvation. It hurts to see you go, but it hurts even more to cause you pain.”

Liz sighed. She didn’t know what to say.

“I guess this is goodbye,” he said, breaking the silence.

“For now,” she told him.

“I’ll find Tess Liz. I’ll find her, and she’ll get what she deserves. I promise you that.”

“Do I just not sleep until then?”

“No. Get some rest. You need it. Ill have Isabel dream walk every so often to make sure you’re ok.”

“Thanks Max.”

Max left out the back. She gave a shuddering sigh, and decided to hang in the back to compose herself. Opening her locker, she found pictures of her and Max. She hadn’t taken them down, maybe because she still had hope. Maybe because her heart wouldn’t let her. She carefully pulled them off and took them upstairs. She unlocked a small keepsakes box. Inside it contained pictures, cards and letters from Max, and a necklace Max had given her a year ago.

One card contained a letter from Max given to her a few months before Alex died.

To My Heart an Soul,
I can’t think of what I’d ever do if I didn’t have you with me. You’re my first thought when I wake up, and my last when I go to sleep. I dream of you every night. It’s crazy how much I need you. You never asked to be a part of what you’re in, and yet you never complain. You’re always there. You’re a staggering beauty, the love of my life. You’re my destiny, my everything. I love you Liz.

With Everything I Can Give,
Max

She fought back tears that she desperately wanted to cry. ‘I will not cry for him anymore,’ her head was saying. But her heart had different plans. Within seconds, she was collapsed on her bed sobbing. Heart wrenching, broken sobs. Her old Max was back, the one she loved. The one she gave her life to. But he had come back too late. And as much as she wanted to run back to him and kiss him, she couldn’t. Not until she had time to deal.

Since the morning shift was slow, Liz decided to take a short nap. She needed the rest. She lied back on her bed and took a long, deep breath. Next to her was an angel doll that hse had been given years ago. She pressed the button on its hand:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my sould to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take

A shudder crept over Liz as she drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 13

“Isabel, you there?” Max asked softly while knocking on her door.

“Yeah, come on in.” Isabel sat at her desk finishing a report and shutting down her computer. She turned to meet her brother’s gaze. “God, Max. You look like shit.”

“Thanks,” he said absent-mindedly.

“Ok, what’s wrong?” Isabel asked.

“Nothing.”

Isabel cornered him with her sharp gaze. “Do I look ignorant to you? I know there’s something going on Max. And if you won’t tell me because I’m your sister, tell me because you can’t go out searching for Tess like this.”

“It’s…complicated.”

“Liz?”

Max nodded. “Let me guess: she won’t take you back.”

Max looked up at his sister, hoping like hell she’d give him some answers or insight.

“Sorry, Max. I can’t help you. You and Liz, well, you’re different. You’re relationship with her is like no one else’s. You two will work something out.”

“No we won’t. We called it quits, Iz. It’s over. She wants nothing to do with me anymore.”

“Can you blame her? After all you’ve put this girl through…”

“I know. I want her to be happy, Iz. I do. I love her so much, that I want her to be happy. Even if it means she’s happy with someone else. She deserves to have what she wants.”

“You know that she loves you Max. With all her heart.”

“That I broke. I shattered that beautiful heart of hers. For what? For Tess? God, I hate that I did this to her. To Liz. To my Liz. Even if she were to take me back, I don’t know if I could ever be good enough for her.”

“You don’t have to be good enough for her. You just have to be the guy that she fell in love with. The guy that saved her that day at the Crashdown.”

“Am I not that guy anymore?”

“No, you’ve been an ass. You and me, we took Tess’s side over Liz’s. Can you imagine how much she’s been through with us? She’s jumped off bridges, she’s risked her life, and she’s seen people die. She has been through horrible shit and she doesn’t complain. She never asked to be a part of this, but she’s never turned her back on us. And then the second she needs us, we turn our backs on her. We both were wrong. All you can do for her now is give her piece of mind. Find Tess and take care of her. For Liz.”

“Will you-?”

“Yeah, I’ll check on her in a few.”

“Thanks, Izzie.” Max closed her door softly, leaving Isabel alone.

Isabel gathered her report together and checked her cell. No calls. She put it on silent and closed her window and all doors. She didn’t want any distractions while doing this. When everything was in order, Isabel sat on her bed. With a picture of Max and Liz in her hands, she closed her eyes and concentrated on finding Liz’s dream.

“You whore! You fucking whore!” Tess yelled.

“Don’t! God, please!” Liz screamed back.

All Isabel heard were voices. All she saw was blackness. She realized she was inside an abandoned building. She turned corners, went down halls, until she finally saw light. And a form. She squinted to make out who it was. ‘Alex?’ Isabel questioned softly. ‘Alex!” her mind screamed and joy. She ran to him and stopper short when the rest of the room was revealed. Tess behind Alex, and Liz feet away from him. The pain radiating on Liz’s face was enough to cause Isabel to back away. Liz had apparently been through this before. ‘Dear God Liz,’ Isabel gasped.

In a mere second, Alex collapsed to the ground, blood spilling from his gut. Isabel had to bite down on her bottom lip to keep from crying out. Tears were coming hard and fast, making Isabel lean against a wall for support. ‘This is just a dream,’ she reminded herself. ‘A dream.’

She closed her eyes momentarily, taking deep breaths before continuing on. When she opened them, she saw Tessa and Liz arguing and before Isabel could so something-anything- Tess ran out and Liz hounded closely after her.

Isabel stammered for a second, not knowing what to do. ‘I need to follow them,’ she decided. She ran past Alex, forcing herself not to look at him. The building exited out onto Roswell’s main streets. Liz and Tess were quite a distance ahead of her, and Isabel had to run like hell to catch up.

Isabel saw them turn into an alley. ‘Oh God,’ she thought. Her feet wouldn’t allow her to go any faster and she knew she had to get there now. Screaming was all Isabel could hear. The two girls who screamed over the man they both loved.

“There is no way Max is worth this much,” she said wryly.

Isabel made it to the alley and found herself too late. For the second she found them, Tess was hovering over Liz with a knife in her hands.

“No!” Isabel screamed. “Tess, no!”

Tess couldn’t hear her. In a fit of panic, Isabel tried to use her powers. They didn’t work.

“Wake up! Wake up!” she screamed, hoping like hell Liz would hear her.

“Goodbye, bitch,” Tess whispered before driving the dagger into Liz’s stomach.

Tess faltered for a moment, biting her lower lip. The dagger dropped to the ground, and Tess disappeared.

“Liz! Liz!” Isabel cried out.

“I…Isabel? Wh…what are y-you doing he-here?”

“Oh God, this is bad,” Isabel surveyed the wound. “Liz, hang on. Hold on for us okay? Please,” Isabel pleaded.

Liz nodded. “Go,” she said hoarsely.

A strange feeling washed over Isabel. A feeling of loss. In an un-Isabel like fashion, she gave Liz a hug and held her tight before pulling back. “He loves you Liz. He never stopped. He was just to blinded to see it.”

Tears that hadn’t appeared until now, flooded Liz’s eyes. “T-tell him th-“ she took a shuddering inhale before continuing on, “that I love him. S-so much.”

“Hold on. He’ll save you.” Isabel focused to wake herself up.

She jerked up in her bed, soaked in sweat. She searched for her phone and called Maria’s cell. Maria picked up.

“Hello?” she said cheerfully.

“Maria, go check on Liz. Now!”

“Isabel, I’m kind-“

“NOW!” Isabel screamed.

She heard Maria’s footsteps on the stairs, running quickly to Liz.

Maria shrieked in the phone, causing Isabel to pull back. “What is it Maria?! Is she okay?!”

Isabel heard the phone drop and Maria’s frantic cries.

Michael grabbed the phone.

“I-Isabel?” he asked in horror.

“I was too late. I’m sorry. You have to get her here. Bring her here.”

“Wh-what are we gonna do Iz? She’s-she’s ble-“

“Bring her here Michael!” Isabel interrupted.

Isabel hung up and quickly lost all composure. She knew what Michael was going to say.

“Max,” she whispered. She had to call Max.

Isabel dialed and waited 4 rings before Max answered.

“What is it Isabel?”

“Max, it’s Liz.”

Isabel heard the car swerve in a U-turn, before Max spoke again.

“What happened? Is she hurt? Is she okay?”

“Get home now,” was all she told him. Any shattering details had to wait until he was here. “Hurry.” ‘Before it’s too late,’ Isabel thought.

“I’m on my way.”

Chapter 14

Max came through the door, panting slightly. He immediately located Michael and Isabel on the couch. They sate there with a dazed expression, as if lost by this sudden occurrence. They were knocked out of their trance-like state only when Max yelled at them.

“Where is she?!”

Michael stood up. “She’s in your room. Maria’s in there with her. She wanted to stay there until you came to heal Liz. You can heal her right?”

Isabel looked with an anxious expression. Maria entered the room and spoke. “Of course he can heal her. He’s done it before.”

“Yeah, this’ll only take me a couple minutes guys. Then she’ll be okay. I promise Iz.”

Max and the group walked to his room. He sat on the edge of his bed. When he took her hand, she shuddered.

“Hey.”

“Hi,” she said with a small smile replacing her tired expression.

“We’re becoming professionals at this,” he joked softly.

She chuckled gently. “Anytime that I can stain my waitress uniform, I’m all for it.”

He smiled at her and she nodded once to hint she was ready. Max placed a hand on her abdomen and searched into her eyes. He gave all of his concentration and power into healing her.

Nothing happened.

He took a deep breath and tried again.

Nothing happened.

Maria let out a small whimper.

“Maxwell, what’s wrong? Why can’t you heal her?”

Max didn’t speak. He didn’t acknowledge Michael’s question or Maria’s whimper. His jaw dropped slightly. She gave him a sympathetic smile and squeezed his hand.

“It’s okay,” she whispered. “I figured as much.”

“Wh-what do you mean Liz? Why can’t I heal you?”

“T-Tess,” she said.

“What?” Max was confused.

Isabel filled in the blanks. “If…if it happened in a dream, it might not be possible to heal her. N-not if Tess is still holding on to it. If she’s l-like, keeping her there. Especially in Liz’s condition-she’s too vulnerable and weakened to fight back in the dream.”

Max looked at Isabel, soaking in her words. He, Michael, and Isabel stepped out of his room. Max shut the door and walked down the hall to talk to them.

“So what do we do?” Michael asked Max.

“We find Tess,” he answered decisively. “Tess has to be sleeping in order to keep Liz from being healed. We find her and we kill her.”

“Whoa, there Maxwell. Wait a damn minute. We can’t just kill her. Be rational, man.”

“There isn’t any time to be rational Michael!” Max exploded. “She’s dying godammit! She’s dying!” Max ran his hands through his hair and slid down the wall had been leaning on, falling to the floor in a crumpled mess. He sat there, in fetal position, with his arms locked around his knees. “It’s my fault! I killed her. I killed her, Michael! I put Tess’s word above hers. And this is what happened! My mistake, my fucking mistake led Liz to her death! I can’t lose her. I can’t-“ Max burst into wet sobs. It was the sound of a man who had his heart ripped from him leaving nothing but an empty space. He would trade his life for hers without question, without hesitation.

Isabel crouched down beside him, pulling his head to her shoulder. “I love her, Iz,” he whimpered.

“I know,” she said to him, on the verge of tears her self. “She knows.”

“We need to go,” Michael said softly.

“Just give us a minute, dammit!” Isabel snapped.

“Liz might not have a lot of minutes left,” Michael replied back sympathetically. He knew where she was coming from. He understood. He loved Liz like a sister too. But if they had any chance in hell to save her, they had to stay clearheaded.

Max wiped his eyes with his shirtsleeve and gave Isabel a quick, but tight hug.

“Michael, take the Jetta and get a head start. Search her house and downtown Roswell, school, and places like that. Isabel, you stay with Maria just in case anything goes wrong with Tess and she decides to show up here.”

“What about you?” Michael asked.

“I’ll search the caves. Search around the deserts and stuff.”

“Maria,” Michael whispered. He motioned for her to come with him. She stood up, looked back at Liz, and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

“Go,” Liz rasped.

Maria stepped outside with Michael, worry and pain written clearly on her face. “What is it? What’s the plan?”

“I’m going to search for Tess downtown, Max in the caves, and Isabel is gonna stay here with you and Liz.”

Maria took out her keys from her pocket and gave them to Michael. Michael took them from her hand, letting his hand linger in hers for a short while.

“Michael, what happens if you don’t find Tess? Is Liz gonna…?” she let her words trail off, afraid of saying what was on all of their minds.

“No, Maria,” Michael said firmly. “We will find Tess. I promise you, I won’t let Liz die.”

Maria’s sorrow-stricken eyes began to gleam with hope. “Go. Go find her and kick her ass for me.” She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her head against his chest.

He could feel the dampness in his shirt where her head was pressed, but he didn’t mind it. He held onto her tighter, hoping and praying that he could keep his promise.
***
Max went into his quiet room and sat next to Liz. Isabel closed the door behind her, leaving Max and Liz alone.

“So what’s the plan fearless leader?” she quipped.

“Michael and I are going to find Tess.”

“And then what?”

Max turned his head away from her.

“Max…no,” she said determinedly.

“But Liz…. She’s-she’s killing you.”

“You aren’t a killer. My Max isn’t a killer.” Liz lifted her weak hand to touch the side of Max’s face.

“Does it- does it hurt?” he asked looking over he abdomen. It was bandaged heavily, but blood was slowly seeping through.

“I can’t feel much anymore,” she answered honestly.

Max fought the strong urge to sob openly in front of her. He had to stay strong for her. He had to pretend that everything was ok.

Liz knew it wasn’t.

“You have to go,” she said. “Find her Max. But don’t kill her. Please,” she begged.

He kissed her lightly on lips, but Liz countered back by kissing him deeply. Their tongues ran across each other’s in a passionate embrace that literally took her breath away. She shuddered in a gasp. He rested his forehead on hers and kissed the tip of her nose playfully.

“I love you Liz. I know my actions over the past few months have been contrary to the fact, but God Liz. I never stopped loving you.”

“I know,” she said softly.

“I’ll come back Liz.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

**An hour later**

Max walked into the Pod Chamber, hoping he’d find Tess in here. ‘Please let her be in here,’ Max thought desperately.

And there she was. Lying on the ground in a dark corner, in a peaceful slumber. A malicious smirk adorned her face. ‘Evil bitch,’ he thought. Here she was sleeping-happily watching his precious Liz die. He felt the rage flowing through his veins. He could do it. His hand was in attack position. His power was mounding. There was enough of it to blow her body into bits and pieces. He wanted to do it. She deserved it, if not more. She put Liz through sheer hell for the past half year. He should do it for Liz.

But his damn conscience had to kick in. “Fuck,” he muttered, shaking his hand to extinguish the power ball that had been building in his palm.

Max’s cell vibrated in his back pocket. It was Isabel.

“Hey, Iz. I was just about to call you. I found her,” he said with a touch of relief and happiness to his voice. “She’s here sleeping, like we thought she would be.”

“Max…” she whimpered.

“Isabel, are you crying? Wh-what’s wrong?”

“Liz is- she- God, I don’t know how to say this. Sh-she’s dead Max. She just-Maria found her. We tried everything, but…. I’m s-so so-sorry.”

Max fell to his knees. Why hadn’t he felt it? He should’ve felt it. He was too busy being angry and building power to feel the sharp pain, which was now emerging inside of him. A gasp of air filled his lungs, threatening to smother them.

Tess awoke, rubbing her eyes. “Max,” she said casually. “What’s-what’s going on?”

Max looked up, fury coursing his veins. He yelled loudly. So loudly, Tess tripped over herself and crawled back into the corner. He stood and walked to her, towering over her frame. She was curled into a ball, whimpering softly. His hand lunged out at her neck. He squeezed her throat. The blood was pulsing through her arteries as he constricted tighter and tighter.

“Liz was afraid you’d do this,” she choked out. Her lips curled into a smile. “Oh, and by the way, she said to tell you she loves you so very much,” Tess said in a mocking voice. “Isn’t that sweet?”

Max jerked her head forward, then slammed it back against the wall, knocking Tess out cold.

Chapter 15

One Moment More by Mindy Smith

Hold me
Even though I know you're leaving
And show me
All the reasons you would stay
It's just enough to feel your breath on mine
To warm my soul and ease my mind
You've go to hold me and show me love

Give me
Just one part of you to cling to
And keep me
Everywhere you are
It's just enough to steal my heart and run
And fade out with the falling sun

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more
You've got to hold me and keep me now

Tell me that someday you'll be returning
And maybe
Maybe I'll believe
It's just enough to see a shooting star
To know you're never really far
It's just enough to see a shooting star
To know you're never really gone

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more
You've got to hold me and maybe I'll believe

So hold me
Even though I know you're leaving

Max stood in between Isabel and Michael, with his hands in his pockets. It had been two days since Liz’s death. He hadn’t talked to anyone in two days. He hadn’t eaten a decent meal in two days. He had barely been out of his room.

Maria returned to her spot next to Michael. He held her hand tightly to assure her he was there for her. The tears kept quietly streaming down her face.

Isabel glanced across on the other side of Liz’s casket. Mrs. Parker was clutching to Mr. Parker, crying hysterically.

‘We killed her,’ Isabel thought. ‘We got her into this and now she’s dead because of us. Her parents lost their only daughter because of us. Their dream is gone. She’ll never go to college. She’ll never become a great biologist. She’ll never marry Max. She’ll never have children. And it’s all our fault.’ Isabel’s eyes shut tightly. She couldn’t cry. Not here, not now. She was his rock for now. He needed her to be strong.

The ceremony was small and short. There was a small gathering following the ceremony.

Max, Isabel, Michael, Kyle, and Maria rode together to the Crashdown. No one tried to start up a conversation-no one said anything to anybody. Silence filled the Jeep.

The harsh reality was soaking into to the five of them. Elizabeth Parker was gone. For good. Anyone but her. She was the last person who ever deserved to die. She took care of all five of them and still managed to get straight A’s and be president of the science club. The world wasn’t fair. The way fate played with them wasn’t fair.

***
They had been there less than an hour and already they were growing sick of the atmosphere. Everything about this place reminded Max of Liz. This is where he saved her that day she was shot. They spent many nights here hanging out, making out. She knew his order like she knew the elements. For him to be sitting here, in his same booth, caused him more pain.

Max and Isabel, Michael and Maria, and Kyle in a chair at next to them, all occupied the same booth. They were the only ones not talking. Maria listened as a group of girls gossiped behind her.

“Oh my gosh, did you hear? It was like, so sad the way she died. She was like, stabbed in the stomach. And no one would save her.”

“She kind’ve deserved it don’t you think,” one girl with an obnoxiously high-pitched voice said. “I mean, she was such a suck up and always perfect. Maybe this was like, someone’s way of telling her she wasn’t better than anybody.”

“I’m so glad we decided to eat here today. Like everything’s free here because she’s dead.”

“Is it gonna be like this tomorrow? Their food here is good, they should keep it free for a while. Like, mourn the loss of their dead daughter some more while we reap the bene-Aaaah!!”
The girl speaking shrieked loudly.

Maria had the girl’s hair in her fist while she yanked the girl’s head back.

“Liz Parker was my best fucking friend ever. She was the nicest person to ever walk you whore infested halls of Roswell High. She was smart as hell and had thousands of more brain cells than you bitches and she deserves a hell of a lot more respect than this. She was too fucking good to hang out with disgusting, spoiled assholes like you. Get the hell out of here and don’t ever fucking come back or I swear to God I will beat the hell out of your surgery-enhanced faces.” Maria let go and watched the girls scramble out of the Crashdown. She sat back down, trembling in anger and grief. Michael wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her head to his chest where she sobbed for the hundredth time today.

“I-I have to go,” Max muttered. He slid out of the booth and left quickly.

**1 month later**

He slowly walked through the quiet graveyard. It was at that time in the early morning, where the fog hung lightly in the air. It was a seasonal fall mist that caused the skies to be overcast. Typical November weather. No one was here at this early hour in the morning, but he needed to come. For her.

Her grave was covered in flowers; the dirt, still relatively fresh, was damp with the misty air.

His fingers traced the letters of her name. His eves fell upon quote written below her name:

Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.

It was Liz’s personal quote. He favorite quote. She had told him it at one time. And it always stayed with him.

The past month had been hard on everyone. Maria was falling apart at the seams. Isabel was crying all night, every night. Kyle was a wreck. And Michael was heartbroken. Max had become numb. He couldn’t feel anything anymore but loss. He would never be happy or at peace again. He wouldn’t allow himself to take in a second of joy. Not when Liz couldn’t take it with him. They needed her desperately. They were forlorn without her.

Max cell vibrated quietly in his pocket.

“Michael, I’m busy,” he answered distantly.

“Max, it’s Tess.”

A/N-Aww, guys and gals, this is the last chapter of this fic. The last. It's been so awesome and I want to thank all of you who have stuck with me throughout this fic. Being my first Roswell fic, I was honestly shocked to see how well it turned out. Special thanks to Kyrie-who has given me so many ideas whether she knows it or not. You've been great to me Kyrie. Thanks for letting me bump and harass your fics-and thanks for keeping those stupid monkeys of yours in check.
I hope I've made the readers happy with this ending. It's taken me a while to write it and get it to the point where only readers can determine the outcome now.
Again, thanks a lot to everyone.

Chapter 16

Max pulled up to Kyle’s house. Kyle met him at the door with a worried look on his face.

“She’s still in the basement.”

Max ran down to the basement and say Isabel, Michael, and Maria in a semi-circle facing the wall. “What’s going on?” he asked sternly from the stairs.

“You need to see this, man,” Michael said aloud without turning back to look at Max.

Max walked over to the focal point of the room slowly.

Tess was sitting up against the brick wall, her breathing short and unsteady. She was bleeding from her side, holding a knife in her hands.

“She stabbed herself,” Maria said softly. “They tried to stop her, but they were too late.”

Something in Maria’s voice told Max that there was no sympathy coming from Maria. Max didn’t blame her.

“Leave us,” Max said shortly.

Isabel turned to her brother. He nodded once to her, his tired eyes showed her that he had just come from the cemetery. She nodded back and followed the rest of them up the stairs.

“Looks like I won,” Tess said maliciously. “Your precious girlfriend’s dead, and I off myself before you and your underlings get the chance.”

Max’s hand lunged at her throat and he closed his fingers tightly around it. “You deserve to die, no matter how it gets done. You are a disgusting bitch. I regret everything with you. I can’t believe I slept with you.”

Tess cackled softly. “You didn’t think you were sleeping with me.”

“What do you mean?” His grip loosened slightly.

“You thought I was Liz. It surprisingly wasn’t that hard. I figured it wouldn’t be, you know? God, you’re so fucking in love with Liz, that all I had to do was make you think it was her you were making love to. Yeah, it hurt to hear you calling her name instead of mine, but it felt so good. And knowing how hurt she would be once she found out-that was priceless.”

“But-“

“Oh yeah,” Tess interrupted. “In the morning I warped you into thinking that you knowingly slept with me. Your reaction was highly disappointing. You know what the first thing on your mind was? That bitch. You thought of how much it would hurt her. You felt guilty and like you betrayed her. She was all you thought about. Every time we were together it was always Liz you thought about. Repulsive.”

“And you killed her. You killed her because she was better than you. Because you were jealous of her. You’re an evil bitch Tess. I don’t know how I could ever marry someone as malicious as you.”

The words hit Tess hard and cold. Her demeanor changed to desperation. ”Because we’re royalty Max. You and I came from pure royal backgrounds. It was preordained for us to be together. It was destined, it was written before you and I were born. At first you refused. You wanted nothing to do with me. But your crown was at stake. So you agreed to it. We slept in separate rooms of our palace. We never shared a bed. You were kind to me, but you showed no affection, no love for me. You fell in love with someone else.”

“Who?” Max asked, baffled by this news.

“A teacher. A commoner. You went to school with her when you were growing up. You thought I didn’t know-that you could keep it a secret from me. I was your queen. Not her. Not some low-class nothing. Oh, but you loved her. Even now, you still love her. I thought it would go away once they put your DNA in with a human’s. I thought that then your love for her would be dead, and you would finally love me the way you were supposed to. Instead, you fell deeply in love with her again. And I had to lose you again to her.”

Max let go of her throat. “Wait, are you saying that L-Liz, Liz Parker, is-“

“Liz is Liana. You and Zan’s love.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?!” Max roared.

“What does it matter Max? What matters is that now you and I can be together. Heal me before it’s too late, and we can start our life together. Back on Antar, where we belong.”

“You don’t get it! Liz is the only one I could ever love. I cannot, and will not, love you like I love her. There’s no one else but her! And you killed her! She’s dead because of you! You deserve to die.”

“Liz isn’t dead,” Tess a small voice.

“What do you mean she isn’t dead?! She isn’t alive!! I saw for myself. I did everything I could, and she still died!”

“Nothing in human dreams is real. Her death in her dream mimicked death in real life. The only thing keeping her alive is me. As long as I’m alive, she’s alive. If you don’t heal me, she dies. For good.”

***
“How do we know Liz isn’t dead anyway?” Michael asked. “She can’t possibly be alive. She was buried alive Maxwell. There isn’t enough air to last her a month and a half.” Max had quickly briefed Michael, Isabel, Maria, and Kyle about the new revelation. All held hope that they could save Liz. But Michael still held skepticism. How did they know this wasn’t a trick just to get Max to heal Tess?

Tess was panting and practically running to keep up with Michael and Max who were walking through the graveyard at a quick pace. “She’s half… alien. When her… human body… is near death, her alien origins kick in. It’ll keep her alive.”

“Right,” Max stated. “We’ll move the particles of dirt and get her out of there. Michael, I’ll need your help to mo-“

“Hold up just I damn minute!” Maria suddenly outburst. She had been quiet this entire time and she’d had enough. “You are talking about digging Liz up!! My best friend!! And you’re just going to dig her body up like it was a simple every fucking task! Liz is dead Max. She is dead!! You’re the reason she is fucking dead in the first place and now you want to do something sick like unburying her?!!”

“Maria!” Michael interjected.

“She’s alive Maria. What if she’s alive? We have to save her.”

“She isn’t alive Max. I know you want to believe it. I do too. I wish she wasn’t dead. But she is. You can’t do this to her Max.”

“Maria, don’t you just want to see and make sure?” Michael pleaded with her. “You don’t have to watch babe. You can go back to the Jeep if you want.”

“No. No, I’m here aren’t I?” she told him. “Let’s just get this over with.”

Within minutes, the dirt was moved to the side. Max took a deep breath and carefully went down into the cavity where Liz’s coffin lie.

“Oh my God!” Maria muffled softly. He hand covered her mouth as the sight filled Maria’s eyes.

“Liz?” he asked softly.

She fluttered her eyes open and gasped to life. Deep, shaky gasps that told Max she was as alive as he.

“Z-Zan?” she said in a soft, raspy voice.

A/N-Oh yeah, I almost forgot, there's gonna be a sequel.. lol. I had to keep y'all in jaw dropping mode there for a little bit.
