I'm glad that maria didn't get fired from her job. She gets to do what she wants to do and that is sing. Maybe a good medicine for her. I think that Michael should just try to talk to her even if she is giving him a hard time. Or maybe try to get some answers from Liz. He acts like a jerk but he is a softy with a big heart.

Max had a great time too and I think that was also because of Liz. Even if he doesn't realized it yet. The funny thing is that I have a feeling that Liz secretly had a crush on Max and that's why she went to every football game. It came out now because she was drunk but they say children and drunk people are always telling the truth. Max should have said it when she asked if she mentioned anything when he brought her home.

Twins for Isabel and Alex. Whaauooo! That's great and explains why she is so tired and not feeling to good.

And OMG Tess and Kyle at the barbeque!!! This is gonna be some party and answer a lot of questions to many people. Is HEll gonna be broken lose?

Madison as aslways cute and funny!!!

I didn't want you to feel guilty but I always love it when the stories I like have long updates. But I'm glad you did it again.
I'm also glad you're feeling better. I hope to see another update soon because now it's getting good with Tess and Kyle there. I hardly can't wait to see what's going to happen.

Hugs,

Chapter 11 Re-Post

* * * * *

Hey Everyone! I’m back. Sorry it took so long. Kind of a long story and it’s just really boring, so whatever. But I have a new part and it’s longer than my usual ones so hopefully that will make up for it!

Just wanted to say that I loved reading all the feedback. I see many of you have turned on Tess! lol. I had a great time reading them all. You guys are awesome. So, I know I had something else to say, but I can’t think of it at the moment (I’ll probably be back in like 20 minutes when I remember! lol.)

And I also just wanted to let you know that some interesting Max and Liz moments are coming up in the next part. I’m almost done it, so it shouldn’t be too long before I post it. I hope to be able to update more frequently. I’m on Spring Break now and I don’t have any money so I had to stay home…but that’s okay because I’m planning on getting ahead of myself with this story. So, I hope you’re all doing well and thanks again. You guys are the best.

Here the ‘Thank You’s’:

Sox: I am cruel, aren’t I? lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Cherie: I’m glad I peaked your interest. Thanks.

Purpleant: Thank you for the feedback. I’m happy you liked it!

Jason's Lover: You’re just full of questions aren’t you? lol. Well, read on…And thanks for the feedback!

begonia9508: Thanks. I’m glad you like it!

Liz86000: I love your enthusiasm. Not liking Tess right now, I see. Thanks for reading!

Emz80m: Thanks for the feedback. I laughed when I read this….All this Tess hostility all of a sudden. lol.

Earth2Mama: What will Tess have to say? Hmm…I dunno! ;) Thanks for the feedback!

Lizza: lol. You’ll have to read on to find out. DUN DUN DAAAA! ;) Thanks for reading!

Tequathisy: Ahh, thanks so much for your feedback. Brought a big smile to my face. I’m so happy that you are enjoying it! Hmm, revenge sex? Wouldn’t that be interesting? lol. I’m glad that you like all the characters. That’s the best compiment I could receive! I’m glad you like the banner as well. I would have liked M&M as well, but I just thought this one was so incredible and I was so thankful that JO made it for me. I think that it’s perfect and I didn’t feel the need for it to be changed.

Icequeen: Thanks for reading and your feedback. I always enjoy reading it. All will be explained soon enough!

Bixie: Thanks so much. I’m glad that you enjoyed it. And you are certainly on to Michael aren’t you? lol.

frenchkiss70: Again, thank you so much for your feedback. I always look forward to it. Okay, I know I’m evil and I apologize! I understand that you are not really feeling Max right now and that it perfectly fine. Gives me the challenge of having you love him by the time the story is finished! (which is what I am aiming for! ;) ) But, I am glad that you like Michael and totally understand him. Madison, what can I say, she means the most to me because she is the hardest to write so I can’t tell you how much that means to me! As for all the questions, I really appreciate them and love reading your thoughts on everything, but I’m afraid I have to keep my mouth shut for the time being ;) Thanks again!

Behrlyliz: Thank you for your feedback! I don’t want to say anything without giving anything away…But thank you so much for reading.

Maxnlizforever:Thanks. You don’t know how much it means that you like the character developments so far. And, I was so happy to hear that you liked QaF as well! There sure are not a lot of us, but we are devoted and must be doing something right since it has lasted five years! lol. Thanks for reading!

g7silvers: Caught you offguard did I? lol. Thanks for the feedback!

sunrise102: lol. I love that expression: ‘the pickles’. That’s too cute. Thanks.

ERIN: Don’t kick yourself! lol. I love to keep you guessing! lol. So glad you like Michael…he’s really grown on me! Glad you LOVED the part because I LOVE you! and thanks for the ‘BUMP!’ Love ya!

D0MiiNiiCANA: Thank you very much. I’m glad you like it!

linliz68: Hey! Thanks. You’re making me blush! lol. Thanks so much!

janesdilemma: Thank you so much. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on everyone. Very interesting and perceptive. Of course, I can’t tell you anything ;). But thank you!

Behrsgirl77: Thanks. So happy you like Liz and Madison’s relationship!

roswellluver: Thank you!

rigel: Glad you like the characters and their respective relationships. Thank you so much!

foreverdreamer15: Hopefully this part will clear up some of your questions. Thanks for the feedback!

WildSphinx: Thanks so much!!!

Alien614: That seems to be the question of the day! lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Liz Parker Evans: lol. I love that first part you wrote! Too funny! Thanks for the feedback!

And thanks to everyone for the bumps and such!

So, here it is.

Enjoy.

Chapter 11

Liz nodded. “Sure. Okay. Let me just lock the door.”

She walked over to the door, not really sure what was going on. Tess hadn’t come in to the Crashdown since high school. Tess also hadn’t really talked to Liz since high school; not that they did a lot of that back then anyways. Liz flipped the sign and locked the door feeling nervous. She didn’t know what to expect. The other woman had caught her completely off guard.

She walked back over and forced a smile on her face. Tess had taken a seat on one of the stools.

“Do you want anything? Coffee or something?” Liz offered from behind the counter.

Tess shook her head. “No thanks. I can’t stay long. Someone’s waiting for me.”

Liz nodded. “Well, what can I do for you?”

“You’ve done enough.”

“Excuse me?” Liz questioned. She wasn’t entirely sure what Tess meant by that.

Tess pushed back her blonde curls and made a noise that was halfway between a laugh and a sob. “I came here to talk to you about Madison.”

Liz felt her heart sink. That was what she had been afraid of.

“Jesus, Liz.” Tess sighed. “I just can’t stop thinking about what could have happened to her if she hadn’t come to you. It’s the worst feeling knowing that your child could have been hurt or kidnapped or…”

Liz nodded as Tess trailed off. She wasn’t sure what to say because she still wasn’t sure what the whole point of this visit was. So, she decided to keep her mouth shut and let Tess talk.

“I guess I just had to come and see you in person. Come here and thank you for what you did.” Tess told her and looked into her eyes. “I just don’t really know what to say to express how thankful I am for what you did.”

“It’s fine.” Liz told her feeling suddenly relieved. “I’m just glad that she came here and didn’t wander off somewhere else.”

Tess nodded. “Yeah, me too.”

There was an awkward silence as Liz couldn’t think of anything to say and Tess stared down at the counter. Liz shifted her weight, not knowing what else Tess wanted. When the other girl looked up Liz thought there were tears in her eyes.

“I just feel so guilty.” Tess said finally.

“Guilty about what?” Liz asked leaning back against the counter.

Tess held up her hands. “Everything. This whole mess is all my fault. I just did what I thought was right. I know people think that I’m a horrible wife and mother for doing what I did.”

“I’m sure that’s not true.” Liz insisted shaking her head.

“Roswell’s a small town.” Tess snorted. “I hear them talking about me and about how I ran off and deserted my family. They think that I don’t care about my daughter and what this will to do to her. But, she was the reason that I did it. I wasn’t happy anymore. It had nothing to do with her. It wouldn’t be right for me to have stayed if I was unhappy. It wasn’t fair to her and it wasn’t fair to Max.”

“Look.” Liz stated. “I don’t know the whole story, but I agree with you. If you weren’t happy anymore, no one could force you to be. If you stayed, you’d just be lying and that would be the worst thing that you could do. At least you were honest. Madison will understand that when she’s older. She’ll realize that you did the right thing.”

“I just feel like a horrible person.” She told her and then suddenly looked up sharply at Liz. “Was I ever mean to you in high school?”

“No. You were never mean to me.” Liz said shaking her head taken aback by the sudden question. She hadn’t really talked to Liz, but they hadn’t been friends so there was no reason for them to talk. But, Tess had never been mean to her.

Tess laughed sadly. “I guess it doesn’t really make a difference considering I can’t remember how I treated you back then. I was pretty shitty back then to some people.”

“Pam Troy.” Liz stated laughing as she remembered the two of them back then. “You two had like full blown out wars back then.”

“You remember that?” Tess asked her smiling.

“I think everybody remembers that.” She replied and couldn’t help but notice Tess had the exact same smile as Madison.

“She was horrible.” Tess groaned. “She was always hanging off Max even though she knew he was my boyfriend. She wanted him so bad.”

Liz nodded her head and looked at the floor. She remembered Tess and Pam fighting over Max.

“I guess that doesn’t matter now either.” Tess said and Liz looked at her. “I mean, considering what’s going on now, I should have just let her have him. It probably would have been easier for everyone.”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Liz stated. Who was everyone?

Tess shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. I just came here because I wanted to thank you for doing what you did. Madison really likes you. She talked about you the whole time I was on the phone with her earlier.”

“She’s a great kid.” Liz told her honestly. “I already told Max that I’ll watch her for however long you need. It’s really no trouble.”

“I’d like that.” Tess told her softly. “At least I know that she’s safe here. It’s just hard to have her at the salon and Isabel isn’t there much anymore…”

“You don’t need to make excuses for having to work.” Liz told her. “You have to do what you have to do.”

Tess nodded and the two of them smiled at each other. Liz really liked having Madison around and she understood that Tess and Max had to work. It was just that both of them had this guilt hanging over their heads for it. Max, because he felt like a failure as a father because he couldn’t take care of Madison without any help. And Tess, because she was the one that had left. Liz didn’t judge either of them for it; she just wished they would accept her offer and stop acting like she was being forced into watching Madison.

“Madison really wants to keep coming here.” Tess told her. “I really want her to as well.”

“Good.” Liz said smiling. “It’s settled then?”

“Yes.” Tess told her and smiled back. Then she held up her hand. “Max told me that you wouldn’t accept the money he offered you before. That’s the one condition; you have to let us pay you. We won’t have you doing this for free.”

“Okay.” Liz told her laughing. “Are you sure you can afford me?”

Tess stood up and shook a finger at her. “You’re a funny girl.”

“I try.” Liz shrugged and they both laughed.

“Thanks for this Liz. I really appreciate it.” Tess said and then walked over to the door.

“It’s not a problem.” Liz told her and hoped it was the last time she would be thanked.

Tess unlocked the door and turned around as Liz began to walk out from behind the counter.

“I’m really sorry, Liz.” Tess told her gently.

“For what?” She asked confused walking towards her.

“For everything.” Tess replied and then walked out of the restaurant.

Liz narrowed her eyes in confusion. She walked up to the door and locked it but stood watching out the window as Tess walked up the street.

What had she been apologizing for?

* * *

“I’m so tired.” Maria moaned pouring her third cup of coffee the next morning.

Liz looked at her from across the counter. “You’re going to kill yourself working these two jobs.”

“I just need to get into the swing of things.” Maria insisted downing half the mug.

The two of them were waiting in the Crashdown. Liz was waiting for Max to drop off Madison and Maria was waiting for Max to give her a lift to work.

“Tonight is going to be bad though.” Maria said pouring more sugar into the cup. “I have to meet with Alex and the guys after work tonight and then go straight to the bar from there.”

“You can’t pull that off.” Liz insisted pouring herself a cup of coffee, her first one.

“I have to. Open Mic night is tomorrow.”

“Are you guys even going to be ready?”

Maria nodded confident. “Yeah. Each band gets two sets. They already know their song and the one that I’m doing is pretty simple. They’re really good, they know all the chords and stuff. I wrote the song so I know all the words. It’s going to be fine.”

“Well, I’m glad that you’re singing.” She told her knowing how much Maria loved it.

“You’re going to come right?”

Liz shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t really feel like going out.”

“I can’t believe you’d desert me like that.” Maria said staring at her. “Don’t let the break-up with Kyle ruin your life. Maybe you’ll meet some guy and get laid.”

She rolled her eyes. She tried not to think about what had happened with Kyle, but she couldn’t help it and it made her angry. She had been thinking about what happened between the two of them a lot lately. She couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing. She hadn’t seen him since the night he left.

“I’ll think about it.” Liz promised as the door opened as Max and Madison walked in.

“Hey!” Liz called to the two of them. Max smiled and Madison skipped over to sit beside Maria. She was smiling happily at the two of them. Liz smiled back; the girl had so much energy.

“Ah, it’s about time my chauffeur arrived.” Maria said finishing off her coffee.

“You look like crap.” Max told her with a gleam in his eye.

Liz and Madison laughed as Maria opened her eyes wide in shock.

“You’re lucky your daughter’s here.” Maria threatened.

“It’s okay.” Madison said laughing. “You can beat him up if you want.”

Maria pointed at Madison while looking at Max. “You better watch out. She gave me permission.”

“Thanks a lot.” Max said poking Madison in the back making her laugh harder.

“Yes. Thank you, sweetie.” Maria told Madison and kissed her on the top of the head. “I’ll be in the car. If I don’t get up now, I never will.”

“Is she okay?” Max asked turning to Liz after Maria had left.

“Just tired.” Liz told him. “She just needs to get used to it.”

Max nodded. “So, Tess told me she stopped by last night.”

“Yeah, we worked everything out.”

“I’m glad.” Max told her smiling.

“Me too.” Madison told her. “I don’t want to stay with anybody else.”

Liz looked over her head at Max and smiled at him. “Good. So, it’s all settled then.”

“Yeah,” Max told her. “We’ll discuss the arrangements for next week tonight when I pick her up?”

Liz nodded. Madison started school next week, so she wasn’t sure how it was all going to work from then on.

“Alright. I better get going then.” He said glancing toward the door. “Someone needs a ride to work.”

Liz laughed. “Okay, we’ll see you later then.”

Max gave Madison a hug and a kiss and then left.

Liz turned to Madison once he had gone. “So what do you want to do today?”

Madison smiled up at her excitedly. “Can we go somewhere? I want to show you something. It’s not far.”

“What is it?” Liz asked curious.

“A surprise.” Madison said bouncing up and down.

* * *

“Whose house is this?” Liz asked Madison.

They were standing at someone’s front door a little while later and Liz had no idea what was going on. Madison just kept telling her it was a secret.

Madison knocked on the door. “It’s my friend Jane’s house.”

“Well, what are we doing here?”

“You’ll see.” Madison told her clapping her hands.

The door opened to reveal a little girl with blonde hair who looked about Madison’s age.

“Hi.” Madison waving. “I told you we would come here.”

“Is that her?” Jane asked pointing at Liz and Madison nodded. “Okay, my mom is on the phone but you can come in.”

Liz hesitated looking at the two little girls. She had no idea what was going on.

“Are they here?” Liz heard a woman’s voice yell from inside the house.

“Yep.” Jane yelled back.

“Well, let them in.” The woman called back. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

Liz looked at the two little girls questioningly. Madison grabbed her hand and pulled her in the house.

“Don’t worry. I called them last night. They know that we were going to come.” Madison assured her.

They were standing in the front hall and Jane pointed to a room to the left. “They’re in there. You can go and see them if you want. I’ll see if my mom is coming.”

“What are we doing here?” Liz whispered to Madison when the other little girl had walked off down the hallway.

“Come and see.” Madison said walking into the room that was off to the left.

Liz shook her head confused by the whole situation, but followed Madison into the room. It was a family room and Liz saw Madison standing over near a couch beside a blanket on the floor. On the blanket were three white puppies. Two were sleeping and the other one was lying on his back looking up at Madison.

Liz stopped in her tracks at the doorway.

“I know you’re scared of them.” Madison said immediately and held up her right hand. “Remember you told me that one bit you when you were little?”

Liz nodded because she couldn’t say anything. The dogs were small, but she was frozen. She was suddenly very aware of the scare above her eye.

“Well, I used to be scared of my closet.” Madison told her. “Monsters used to live in there when I was little. Do you know what my dad told me?”

Liz shook her head staring hard at Madison’s face because she didn’t want to look at the animals at her feet.

“My dad told me that I couldn’t be scared for my whole life. He said that the only way not to be scared would be to look in my closet when all the lights were off.” She brushed a hair out of her eye. “I was really really scared, but one night I looked inside the closet and the monsters had moved out. I never heard them in there anymore.”

“Madison.” Liz said softly. “This is different.”

She shook her head. “No. You can’t be scared of them for your whole life. I’m not scared of my closet anymore and I’m still only little. You are still scared of dogs and you are a lot older than me. I think you just need to pet one and see if you are still really scared.”

“I know I am.” Liz told her flatly. There was a part of her that felt ridiculous, but she couldn’t help it. She had the scar to prove that she was scared of dogs.

Madison bent down and picked up the puppy that was awake. Liz didn’t know how old it was, but it still looked pretty small to her. Although, when Madison was holding it, it looked much bigger.

“Look,” Madison told her giggling as the puppy licked her cheek. “He’s just playing.”

“I think that we should leave.” Liz told her gently feeling very uncomfortable.

“Wait!” Madison said quickly. “I’ll sit on the couch and hold him. You can just come and sit beside me. If he tries to bite you or something I’ll help you. But, I know that he won’t. He just likes to lick people.”

Liz shifted her weight as Madison sat down on the couch with the puppy in her lap.

“I don’t think so.” Liz told her shaking her head.

“Please.” Madison pleaded staring at her from across the room.

Liz looked at the little girl who was making, not oddly enough, puppy dog eyes at her. She bit her lip and sighed. She couldn’t believe that Madison had thought of this. She couldn’t believe that this little girl she hardly knew cared enough to think this whole scheme up. Liz looked into her hopeful eyes and took a step forward. The least she could do was sit down beside her. She didn’t have to touch the dog. And if it made a move for her, she could always run. It was ridiculous, but she knew she could run fast.

Madison smiled the biggest smile Liz had ever seen as she took another step towards the couch.

“He won’t hurt you. I promise.” Madison told her holding up one of her hands, the other one was petting the dog.

Liz smiled weakly and felt like a moron. She was a grown woman, damnit. She told herself that her fear was irrational and walked the rest of the distance to the couch. Then she sat down next to Madison and leaned away from her slightly. It was suddenly hard for her to breathe.

“See? You are okay.” Madison said softly and smiled up at her.

“That’s what you think.” Liz said and choked out a laugh turning her attention to the puppy. He was sitting in Madison’s lap and she was petting him softly on his head. He turned his head and looked up at Liz. She felt her heart stop and forced herself not to look away. She looked at the little face and was surprised to find that the puppy was the cutest dog she had ever seen

“He’s very soft.” Madison whispered. “Maybe you should pet him.”

“Oh, I don’t think so.” Liz said looking back at her with wide eyes.

“It’s okay. I’ll hold onto him.” Madison told her and put both her hands around the dog’s midsection. “Just touch the top of his head.”

Liz looked at her for a moment and thought about it. The dog really did look harmless and she wanted to pet him. For some reason, she wanted to pet him and face her fear.

“Okay.” Liz said finally. “But hold him tight.”

Madison laughed and smiled happily. That was when the reason became clear. She wanted to do this for Madison because Madison had done it for her.

She reached her hand out tentatively and touched the top of his head. The fur was so soft that her fingers just glided down the back of his neck.

“He’s so soft.” Liz whispered. The dog turned his head towards her and she pulled her hand back quickly.

“I’ve got him.” Madison said nodding her head up and down. “I’m holding him. I won’t let go.”

Liz reached back over and ran her hand down his back. She could feel his body moving up and down as he breathed.

“Let go.” Liz told her suddenly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. But, do it now before I change my mind.”

Madison nodded her head quickly and let go of him.

Liz moved back a little as he stood up on Madison’s lap and yawned. She could see his teeth and she almost got up and ran. But, she could also see Madison looking at her in a way that could only be described as proud. So, she sat there and watched as the dog slowly stepped off Madison’s lap and stood on the couch in the space between the two of them. He walked over towards Liz.

There must have been a flicker in her eyes because Madison broke the silence. “It’s okay. You’re okay.”

Liz nodded as the dog moved his head close to her hand that was resting on her knee. She literally forced her hand to stay still and tried to control her breathing. Then, she felt something cold and wet slide against her hand. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

“What?” Madison questioned in a high voice.

“He’s licking my hand.” Liz said without moving her mouth.

Madison laughed. “He likes you.”

The dog then looked up at her and Liz reached over with her other hand to pet his head. When she touched him he moved his head against her hand, rubbing against her skin.

“I think he loves you.” Madison said clapping her hands. “See? I told you that you won’t be scared anymore.”

Liz laughed suddenly because she realized that she wasn’t afraid of the dog. He was looking up at her with big eyes and she smiled at him.

“Can I hold him?” Liz asked aloud.

“Yes!” Madison squealed and sat up on her knees to face Liz.

Taking both her hands, Liz grabbed the puppy underneath his belly and lifted him up to her chest. She held him against her chest, petting him softly and feeling incredible. She never ever would have thought she would be doing this.

“It’s just like my dad said.” Madison told her proudly. “You aren’t scared anymore are you?”

“No.” Liz told her honestly holding the dog closer to her chest. She wasn’t scared; in fact, the only feeling she had was one of happiness.

It was then that the dog began to lick her cheek and Liz didn’t even flinch. She just began to laugh as his tongue slid over her facing. It felt cold and wet and it tickled.

She looked over to Madison. “It tickles.”

Madison slid closer to her on the couch. “I know. But, he licks his butt too ya know?”

They stared at each other for a moment and then began to laugh hysterically. Madison collapsed against Liz with laughter while the dog continued to lick her cheek.

* * *

“So, you bought the dog?” Max asked Liz when he came to pick Madison up that night.

“Not really.” Liz explained. “The woman gave him to me. I offered to pay, but she wouldn’t let me.”

They were standing in the back room and Madison was sitting on the couch holding the puppy.

“Madison told me last night that you were afraid of dogs.” He said and then turned to Madison. “That was why you were talking to Jane on the phone so quietly last night. You were planning this.”

Madison smiled up at them sheepishly. “It worked didn’t it?”

Max laughed and turned to Liz. “I just can’t believe that you took the dog home.”

“I had to. I fell in love with him.” Liz said shrugging. “I just can’t believe that Madison did that.”

“She’s very creative.” Max said shaking his head.

“Thank you.” Madison said and stood up holding the puppy. “I’m going to bring him back upstairs.”

Liz nodded. Madison had brought him down from the apartment for Max to see when he had arrived a few minutes earlier.

“She’s an amazing kid.” Liz told him when she had gone back up the stairs to the apartment.

“That she is.” Max said laughing. “I still can’t believe her.”

Liz nodded in agreement and then asked him what the arrangements for the following week were going to be since Madison would be going back to school. The two of them decided that Madison could take the school bus, which would drop her off at the top of the street, and Liz could pick her up. And then Max would pick her up around five when he was finished work.

“Is that alright?” He asked her and she nodded.

“Okay, well now that that’s settled I wanted to talk to you about tomorrow night.”

“What about it?” She asked.

“I was just wondering if you were going to the bar for Open Mic night?” He asked. “Because Michael and I are going. Isabel is going to watch Madison for me because she hasn’t been feeling well lately and doesn’t want to go out. So, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to come and hang out with us?”

“Sure.” Liz nodded smiling. “That’d be great.”

He smiled back at her. “Okay, good. Do you want me to pick you up?”

“No. It’s not that far. I can walk. Besides, I’m not sure what time I can leave here. Friday night’s pretty busy.” She told him as Madison came running down the stairs.

“Okay. So, I’ll just meet you there.”

“Yeah.” She told him and Madison came up to them.

“I’m ready.” She informed her father.

Liz walked over and knelt down beside Madison. “Thank you for today.”

“You’re welcome.” She said and hugged her tightly. Liz squeezed her back and couldn’t stop smiling.

She walked them to the front door and said goodbye. Madison walked out, but Max turned back to her.

“So, what did you name the dog?” He asked with a smile.

She shook her head and laughed. “Madison named him.”

“You let her name him?” He questioned and she nodded. “Well, what’s his name?”

“Scaredy Cat.”

Okay, so here is a note that I had to post at the end of the story. I don't know what the health regulations are about having a dog in an apartment above a restaurant. But, it's my story, so whatever! lol.

Chapter 12 Re-Post

* * * * *

Okay. I'm back. Finally. I know, I know...I'm horrible with updates. I'm sorry! Please forgive me! lol.

I was waiting for this to be pruned, but that's not happening until the weekend and I've made you all wait long enough.

So, this part is really long. There is more of the Open Mic night. But, I'll come back in a few days with the rest of it.

So, here are some 'Thank You's':

FamersAmers: Thanks for the feedback. It has not been specified that Tess is sleeping with Kyle, but many people have their suspicions ;)

Jason's Lover: Thanks. I’m glad you liked Madison’s plan!

Janesdilemma: Ahh, thanks so much! It means a lot that you like Madison.

begonia9508: So, you like this part the best so far? Uh oh, I guess the pressure’s on now huh? lol. So happy that you liked Madison’s plan!!!! Thanks for the feedback.

Liz86000: Thank you so much. I wasn’t sure if Liz’s feelings were believable, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes, a little progress between Max and Liz is being made. ;)

Behrlyliz: Yes, you were definitely right about Tess’ reason for wanting to talk to Liz! A little kiss? Hmm…I guess you’ll have to wait and see. Thanks for the feedback!

Emz80m:Well, I love that you love the fic! ;) There’s something going on between Kyle and Tess? lol. Thanks for the feedback.

frenchkiss70: It is a Madison/Liz fic isn’t it? lol. Thanks so much for the compliments on Madison…really means a lot to me! J Sure, I give you full permission to beat up Max…My only hope is that it won’t come to that! lol. I will try very hard! Ah, the Kyle and Tess question…my lips are sealed on that issue, but I love all the theories I’m hearing and I’ll just let you know that that will all be clarified soon. I understand where you’re coming from on the Max issue. Recently there haven’t been any chapters from inside his head, I devoted the first part of the story for that…but he is back in this chapter…Of course not all your questions will be answered, but there will be a glimpse of what has been going on with him. Yes, Maria is very troubled right now and not sure what to do with herself…but your concern for her means a lot! I’m glad that you are enjoying the story despite all the concerns that you have. Thanks so much for your feedback!

Bixie: Thanks. I’m so happy that you like Madison and she is keeping you on your toes! ;) She is just full of surprises, isn’t she? Thanks for reading!

SmileeUk: Thanks so much. Glad that you like Liz and Madison’s relationship.

tequathisy: So, you liked the role reversal there between Madison and Liz? Yay! That’s what I was hoping for. And you’re a Tess sympathizer too! That also makes me very very happy! ;) It hasn’t been decided whether Tess will see Madison on weekends and such. Right now, they just take it as it comes…Like when Tess took Madison shopping. But, did you notice that Liz didn’t feel like going until Max asked her?? lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Earth2Mama: Aww…Thanks, I’ve fallen in love with Madison as well. I guess you could kinda sorta maybe call Max asking Liz out as a date…;) Thanks for the feedback!

Lizza: Oh! Me too. I hate spiders *shudders*. Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

ERIN: Glad you liked the puppy scene! I love them too, I never had one though. Stupid dad wouldn’t let me! (I’m still pulling guilt trips on him for that!) So, you liked the Scaredy Cat, huh? I thought it was cute. Kyle and Tess…are you sure? How do you know what they know that she doesn’t know? LMAO! (I love that episode!) Me? Plotting something? Why, I can’t believe you’d accuse me of such a thing! ;) And thanks for the big ‘AW’ and ‘BUMP’. Makes me have a big SMILE! ;)

Icequeen: Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the Madison and Liz part! J Yes, there is always room for hope! Tess was very cryptic wasn’t she? lol. Thanks for reading.

Maxnlizforever: Thanks so much. I agree…that was really the whole point of it (to show that they trust each other very much). And I really appreciate that you understand them not rushing into anything (I know it hurts, but I just don’t find it realistic that they would rush into anything).
About QaF…I know *sigh* I saw the promo announcing it was the last season right before Christmas…totally ruined my whole vacation. But, five years is a pretty long time, so I can’t complain too much (I do anyways! lol) Aww, thanks…I love your quote too. Brian with that hose, has to be like his funniest scene EVER! I used to rewind it and watch it over and over again! lol.

Roswellluver: lol. I agree, the dog is going to end up having some serious identity problems! ;) Thanks for the feedback!

WildSphinx: Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it.

g7silvers: There’s some Max in this part just for you J Thanks for the feedback!

linliz68: Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it! And I’m so happy you liked the puppy’s name! Lol. I wasn’t sure how that was going to be received, but I thought it was cute ;)

purpleant: Thank you for the feedback! I think that a lot of people were surprised by Tess and Liz’s conversation. And thanks for your thoughts on Madison! I really appreciate it!

OmegaRam1: Shocked the hell out of you did I? That’s like the ultimate compliment, but I hope that you’ve recovered! J Thanks so much for the feedback!

Behrsgirl77: I’m glad you liked it! I have to agree with you, Madison is precious and I’m so happy you think that J But, is Tess the girl? lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Smac: So, you’re another person jumping on the bandwagon of Tess and Kyle being together? Interesting. I guess, you’ll just have to wait and see. I’m rotten, I know! lol. I loved reading your thoughts on Max…very intriguing. And I totally love you for getting that none of them are rushing into anything! I know it’s hard, but I just don’t find it natural if they jump into anything. And I’m so happy you like Liz! Seriously, your whole post makes me happy! J So, thank you very much for the feedback!

Brighteyes: Thanks so much. I am so glad that you are continuing to read it!

Cherie: I’m so happy you liked what Madison did. Yeah, a lot of people are suspicious about Tess, but I haven’t been totally clear on that, so it’s my fault! I admit it! lol. Very touched by your concern for Maria! Thanks for the feedback!

Alien614: Is it obvious? lol. My lips are sealed. Thanks for reading!

So here it is.

Enjoy.

Chapter 12

Liz looked in the mirror with approval. She was finally ready to go.

Max had picked up Madison a few hours ago and confirmed that she was still going to meet them for Open Mic. She had told him she would be, she just wasn’t sure what time. It had been, as she predicted, busy at the Crashdown that evening. It was nearly ten o’clock and everyone was downstairs cleaning up and getting ready to close on the hour. She had run upstairs and gotten ready in record time. She didn’t want to miss Alex and Maria’s set.

She stared in the mirror for a moment longer and had to admit that she looked good. She had blow-dried her recently cut hair so that it was fanned out around her face. She was wearing a short black skirt and a tight red tank top that clung to her in all the right places. It was all topped off with knee-high black boots. But, it wasn’t only her appearance that made her look good; she felt good. It felt good to be going out and temporarily forgetting all the bullshit that she had gone through lately.

She turned to look at Scaredy Cat who was sitting on the floor looking up at her.

“Well,” She asked spinning for him. “What do you think?”

The puppy barked up at her and wagged his tail.

“As long as you approve.” She laughed and bent down to kiss him on the top of his head. She grabbed her purse and walked over to the door. “Don’t wait up.”

He barked again and she closed the door. She ran down the stairs into the backroom feeling on top of the world.

The feeling was suddenly ripped out from underneath her when she saw him sitting on the couch at the bottom of the stairs.

“Where are you off to all dressed up?” Kyle asked standing up once she had reached the bottom of the steps.

Liz glared at him. She hadn’t seen him since the night he had broken up with her. She had thought about him enough and it had made her angry. But, seeing him now she was beyond angry. She was fucking pissed off.

“What?” She snapped putting her hands on her hips. “You expect me to be up in my room crying and stuffing my face with ice cream until I explode?”

“That’s not what I meant.” He replied immediately. “You look great.”

She rolled her eyes. “What are you doing here?”

He paused and stared at her. She looked back into his eyes. They were the eyes that she had looked into for so many years; too many years. They were the eyes she thought she’d known, but now they were like a stranger’s to her.

“I wanted to talk to you.”

“I’m on my way out.”

“Liz,” He sighed. “It’s really important.”

“Then you better make it fast.” She muttered. “I’m already running late.”

“This is not something that I can just summarize for you. It’s about what happened between us.”

Liz shook her head, trying to will herself to be calm. He wanted to talk about them now. As she was on her way out the door to have a good time and forget about him. He had the balls to show up now.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” She whispered as she felt her anger rise instead of diminish.

“Does it look like I’m joking?” He said softly holding his arms out. “We really need to talk about this. It will be good for us to get this all out in the open.”

Liz took a step forward feeling her anger surge. He thought it would be good for them. Fuck that.

“You want to talk?” She demanded and felt her voice rise. “Okay. Fine. Let’s talk.”

“Okay, well…”

“Let’s talk about what an unbelievable asshole you are.” She interrupted him unable to control herself. “Let’s talk about all the years I wasted on you. Let’s talk about all the promises you made to me. Or all the times that you told me that you loved me. Let’s talk about the nights we spent together and all the fucking memories we made. Let’s talk about the night you came here to break up with me. The night you said that you were leaving me. The night that you told me you couldn’t move in with me because you didn’t want to be with me anymore. Let’s talk about all of that, Kyle! Because you know what? I’ve been dying to have this conversation.”

She was shaking now and she was so angry. She was just so angry and so tired of all this bullshit. She stood facing him and he was looking at her in shock. She could tell that he had not expected this from her and she wanted to laugh because that proved he didn’t really know her at all. She felt tears well up her eyes, but she wouldn’t let them fall. She wouldn’t cry for him.

“How was I supposed to move in with you?” He whispered and looked confused. “Maria had just shown up.”

Liz laughed. “Is that your excuse? You broke up with me and wouldn’t move in because Maria was here?”

“No.” He said shaking his head and tried to compose himself. “I’m just…I don’t know…”

“It’s achingly funny that now you can’t even think of anything to say.” She muttered pointing her finger at him. “I’ll do you a favour. I’ll talk and you listen.”

He nodded his head and swallowed deeply. It made her happy to know that she had shaken him.

“I have nothing to say to you.” She told him smiling bitterly. “You came into my life and tried to take it from me. You made me waste all those years with you. And I’ll admit that we had some good times, but they don’t make up for what you did to me. They do not even come close to making up for all the things that I missed while I was with you. And I just don’t care anymore Kyle. I really don’t. I can’t waste any more time on you and wondering how everything could have been different. How everything could have been better without you. I just don’t care.”

“None of this is making any sense.” He said shaking his head. “How did I make you miss anything? Why do you keep saying that you wasted time with me? You loved me. I know you did.”

She shook her head back at him. “Maybe I did, Kyle. Maybe I did love you, but maybe it was because I had to. Maybe I had no choice.”

He tried to say something but she cut him off. “None of that matters anymore because I don’t love you and I never will again. It just doesn’t matter to me anymore because I have nothing to say to you and I’m moving on.”

They stood staring at each other. Liz could see that he was confused and she was too. She hadn’t known that all of that was going to come out of her mouth. It had all just come from somewhere deep inside of her and she wasn’t quite sure what it meant. But, she did know that whatever it was, it was true.

“I’m not sure what just happened here.” He said slowly.

“That’s fine.” She told him. “Don’t lose any sleep over it. This is over. I think that you should leave. I have somewhere to be.”

He stared at her for a moment and she stared back to show him that she meant it. She meant every word that she had said.

“Okay.” He nodded. “Okay, I’ll go.”

He stood there for a moment longer with a look of wonder on his face.

“Go.” She stated crossing her arms.

He nodded and walked to the side door. He stopped and turned back to her.

She held up her hand. “If you apologize I will castrate you. Right here. I have plenty of knives in the kitchen.”

His eyes widened for a moment and then he walked out, the door closing behind him firmly.

Liz took a deep breath and felt her body begin to shake. All she wanted to do was cry. For what, she wasn’t sure but it’s all she wanted to do.

“No.” She whispered fiercely. She wouldn’t shed one fucking tear. At least not tonight. Tonight was her night.

She went into the small employee bathroom and touched up her make-up and made sure she still looked presentable. She walked out of the bathroom and smiled. A real smile.

She was going to have fun tonight. After all, she deserved it.

Max sat at the table staring down at his drink. He had been there for a little over an hour and was beginning to regret it. The bands had started playing right after he had arrived and none of them were really any good. But, he had to give them credit because you’d never find him up there.

He sighed and finished off his drink. He had wanted to have a good time tonight, actually he had promised that he would have a good time, but that wasn’t happening. So far, all he had done was fight with Michael and his twenty questions.

He looked across the table at his friend and smiled. Michael was staring up at the stage in something that looked like horror and disgust. There was a woman up there who was clearly drunk and doing a horrible Cyndi Lauper rendition. He had to agree with Michael’s expression though. Seriously, what fucking year was this?

He laughed to himself because he suddenly thought of his sister. If Isabel could see him now, sitting here miserable, he’d be in deep shit trouble. She was the one he had made the promise to. He had promised her that he would have a good time. And you didn’t screw with Isabel Evans.

He had been avoiding his sister lately; in fact he had been avoiding pretty much everyone lately. But, he couldn’t help it. There was just too much going on in his life and the only person that he needed to pay attention to was Madison. Since Tess had left, Madison had been his one and only concern. So, he just concentrated on her and nothing else. He just stared ahead and didn’t really look at anything or care about anything else. Sure, it was a shitty thing to do but she was his biggest concern right now. Everything else came after that.

The only problem was, he didn’t know what to do about his daughter. It was all too confusing. Sometimes she acted like everything was fine and she’d be really happy; then the next thing you know she’s crying and screaming that she wants her mother. He tried to talk to her about the separation and she would just say that she was fine. She didn’t like talking about it and he couldn’t force her too. She just wasn’t ready yet. And that hurt him more than anything because he knew that there was nothing he could do to make up for what had happened. So, he just concentrated on her and what she needed and then he waited. He waited for her to hate him. He knew it would happen eventually.

A little girl needed her mother and he knew that there was no way he could ever compensate for Tess. So, he tried to do the best he could but it never seemed good enough. He didn’t make Madison’s pancakes the way she liked them, he didn’t brush her hair the way her mother did, he told her to wear clothes that weren’t part of a matching set, he got soap in her eyes when he washed her hair. He just couldn’t do anything for her and that was the most horrible feeling in the world. But, what was worse was that he couldn’t tell anyone. How do you admit something like that? He just couldn’t bring himself to ask for help because he was her father. Madison was his life; she was the reason he breathed and if he couldn’t take care of her…Well, then what was the point?

It was Isabel that finally smartened him up. He had been avoiding her and everyone else as much as he could. Then a few days ago she had forced him to come over for dinner and attacked him when Alex had taken Madison out to pick up ice cream. She knew him too well and knew that he was barely holding on. He knew that others were able to tell as well, but his sister was the only one brave enough to say something. So, in true Isabel fashion she had called him on it. And he had cried. It was all just too much for him. He told her everything. He told her that he just couldn’t do it; he wasn’t good enough. He wasn’t a good enough father. And she had laughed at him. Like, actually laughed at him. Then she had told him to suck it up and drop the pity party. He had been shocked. She gave a very dramatic monologue that he was a dickhead if he thought that this was all about himself. She told him that he was just avoiding the obvious. His life had changed and he wasn’t prepared for that. Then she told him it was all for the better and he better check his attitude at the door because there were far worse things that could have happened to him. It was actually a very beautiful speech and he suspected that she had rehearsed it.

When he had gone home that night and put Madison to bed, he realized that Isabel was right. Things could be worse. He was still here after all, and he still had Madison. That was what mattered to him and if he fucked up he fucked up. Nobody was perfect. So, he had called Isabel back and told her that she was right. She hadn’t been surprised and didn’t try to hide her obvious pleasure in his admission. Then she had made him promise that he would quit feeling sorry for himself and just take it all as it comes and have fun. He had promised and intended to keep it.

He looked up at the table and was surprised to see that Michael was gone. He glanced around and saw him at the bar grabbing two more drinks. He had been pretty shitty to Michael and a lot of other people and he felt bad for it. He really did and he wanted to make up for it.

He smiled as Michael came back and placed another drink in front of him.

“Thanks.” He told him and Michael just grunted and sat down with his own beer. “Look, I’m sorry if I’ve been a dick lately.”

Michael slowly turned to look at him and then shrugged. “You’ve had a lot of shit to deal with. Don’t worry about it. We all have our problems.”

Max leaned back in the chair as Michael looked back to the stage in relief as the woman wailing about girl’s wanting to have fun stepped down. He wondered when Alex and Maria were going to be on. Alex had gone off to talk with the guys in his band and Maria was running around serving drinks. The place was pretty crowded.

Max looked at the door for what seemed to be the hundredth time that night and wondered when Liz was going to show up. If she didn’t get there soon, she might miss Alex and Maria.

Well, that wasn’t the only reason. He really wanted to see her. She had been someone else he hadn’t really bothered with and he felt extremely bad about that. He wasn’t taking her for granted, but she was the one person that he had actually let help him through all of this and that scared him. Her help was the only help that he had accepted and he hated to do it. Mostly because it meant failure in his eyes and also because he had felt like he was taking advantage of her. That he was using Madison as this pawn to get what he wanted; a babysitter. But, he didn’t see Liz as a babysitter. He didn’t really know what she was, but he knew that he wanted her as a friend. That was why he was hoping she would show up tonight. He wanted to hang out with without all the babysitting shit between them.

“So, she didn’t say anything about who it is?” Michael asked suddenly.

Max sighed and looked up at his friend who was staring at him. This was the reason he hadn’t been having a good time and he thought Michael had finally let up. Obviously not, since he was back to playing twenty questions.

“How many times do I have to tell you that she didn’t? Christ! What is wrong with you?” Max demanded getting fed up. This was not what he had had in mind for tonight.

“I’m just saying if she’s fucking someone else, you have a right to know. You’re her husband.”

Max opened his eyes wide in shock. “Now who’s being a dick? And I’m not going to be her husband for much longer.”

“Look, all I’m saying is that I would want to know.”

Max sighed and leaned across the table. “I’ve already told you that I asked her that day she left. She wouldn’t tell me. What do you want me to do? Torture her until she does? Besides, I don’t really care anymore.”

“Well, I would.” Michael muttered. “What a bitch.”

“Please, Michael.” He replied and rolled his eyes. “You’ve known her as long as I have and you know that she is not a bitch or a whore or a slut or all the other crap that you’ve been calling her. So stop it. I just don’t want to hear it anymore.”

“I can’t believe that you’re still defending her after what she did to you and Madison.”

Max reached over and grabbed Michael’s arm, not hard but just to get his attention. “I wouldn’t have Madison if it weren’t for Tess. And I’m not just talking about custody. I mean all together. If there was no Tess, there would be no Madison. Madison is a part of her, so fucking lay off.”

Michael stared at him for a moment and then pulled his arm away.

Max leaned back in his chair. He wasn’t mad at him. He was just fed up. Michael had been on his case all night about Tess and he had no idea why. Plus, Michael just looked like he was on edge, but not about Tess. Something else was bothering him. Like he had told him earlier, everyone had their problems. Max wanted to know what was bothering him, but he didn’t feel like he had a right to ask. After all, he had shut Michael out for the past few days, so it was only fair.

“Hey! You guys invited me out and I’m beginning to regret it already. You two look miserable”

Max looked up to see Liz standing at the table with a beer in her hand.

Michael grunted something without barely looking up, but Max stood up and smiled. He was so relieved that she had shown up. He hadn’t been sure that she would.

“Hey,” He said looking down at her and taking in her outfit. “Wow, you look amazing.”

“Really?” She said laughing. “Well, thanks. I feel amazing.”

He waited for her to sit down in the chair beside him and in front of Michael and then he took his seat.

“You look good too.” She told him pointing with her beer bottle. “Especially now that you’re smiling. I was afraid to come over here.”

He shrugged and his smile widened. This was it. It was time for a fresh start.

“And what’s the matter with you?” She asked Michael and ruffled his hair. He was sitting looking at the stage, so his back was to her.

“My time of the month.” He muttered not turning around.

Max rolled his eyes as Liz looked at him curiously.

“So, when did you get here?” He asked. “I didn’t see you come in.”

She shrugged. “Not too long ago. I went over to the bar and had a beer. You two looked like you were having an important conversation. Then when I thought you were about to kill each other I decided to make an appearance.”

“That’s very considerate of you.” He replied holding up his glass of whiskey.

“So, did I miss Alex and Maria?” She asked looking around.

He shook his head. “They haven’t gone up yet. They better soon though, the other entertainment has been less than entertaining.”

“Yeah, I saw Cyndi up there when I came in.” Liz said laughing.

Michael groaned. “Who even let that thing up there?”

“You should go up there.” Liz said poking him and then she turned to Max. “The two of you could do a duet.”

Max laughed as Michael shook his head in exasperation. “I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

“I tried to get here earlier, but I got hung up at the Crashdown.”

Max thought he saw a flicker in her eye. “Is everything okay?”

She nodded and smiled. “Yeah. Everything’s fine. Especially since I’m here, it feels good to get out.”

“I know what you mean.” He agreed as Maria came running up to the table.

“Lizzie!” She squealed and hugged her. “I didn’t think you were going to make it.”

“Neither did I.” Liz told her and finished off her beer. “But, I’m glad that I didn’t miss it. When are you guys going up?”

“Alex and the guys are going up next to do their song and then I’m gonna go up when they’re done.”

“How are you going to do that if you’re waiting tables?” Max asked her. “Your boss going to let you go and do a song?”

She bit her lip. “Well, he doesn’t really know. It’s going to be like a spur of the moment kind of thing.”

Michael turned around finally and looked at her. “But, it isn’t a spur of the moment kind of thing. You’ve been practicing.”

“But, he doesn’t know that.” She pointed out and grinned at them.

“You’re going to get fired.” Liz said shaking her head.

“Well, can I get you guys something to drink before I’m no longer an employee here?” Maria laughed and they ordered another round.

Max glanced over at Michael to see him staring after Maria. He rolled his eyes. Michael still couldn’t be interested in her. Maria had made it very clear that she wasn’t Michael’s biggest fan.

“I’m so excited.” Liz exclaimed and Max turned his attention away from Michael and to her. “I can’t wait to hear them.”

“Are you drunk?” Michael asked her leaning forward on the table.

Max looked at Liz more closely. She looked fine to him. She didn’t appear to be drunk, besides she had only had two beers.

“No.” She said pointedly. “I’m just happy.”

Max turned to see that Michael was studying her intensely.

“Does this have to do with Kyle?” Michael asked her.

Max looked back at Liz who looked startled for a second. What the hell was going on? The two of them were having like their own little conversation with their eyes and Max felt like he wasn’t even at the same table.

“What about Kyle?” He finally asked because the two of them were just staring at each other.

Neither one answered because Maria came back with their drinks and pointed at the stage. Max turned to see that the band on it was done their set and stepping down.

“They’re next.” Maria whispered in excitement. “I’m going to go and pretend that I’m working. Wish me luck.”

“Good luck.” Max and Liz said together, but Maria was already running off.

“She is so going to get fired.” Michael muttered.

Max nodded.

“Oh yeah.” Liz said nodding her head as well. She was looking up at the stage. “What happened to Alex?”

Max looked up at the stage wondering what she was talking about for a moment and then realized when he saw Alex.

Alex and his band were on the stage getting ready. The drummer was sitting down and the three other guys were pulling on their guitars. Alex walked up to the microphone in the middle. There was a bandage on his forehead over his left eye.

“He’s trying to go for the rugged bad-boy look.” Michael said rolling his eyes.

Liz looked to Max and he shook his head. “He walked into the basement door this morning.”

“Total moron.” Michael muttered and turned back in his chair so he could face the stage.

“Alex has really bad coordination.” Max offered to Liz seriously and then they began to laugh.

“This is so cool.” Liz said. “I haven’t seen The Whits perform since high school.”

Max nodded in agreement. He was really excited. They had been really good back then. They had played at nearly all the parties and festivals in town.

“Hopefully they’ve gotten better.” Michael said holding up his beer to the stage and then took a drink.

“Shh.” Liz told him staring up at the stage smiling.

Max looked over to the stage when he heard Alex’s voice.

“Hey everybody.” Alex said into the microphone while adjusting his guitar. Then he looked up and grabbed the mic with one hand. “We’re The Whits and some of you might remember us from a few years back.”

There was clapping and yelling from the crowd. Max and Liz included.

“Thanks.” Alex said smiling. “Well, we haven’t performed in awhile and decided it was time for a comeback. This seems like as good as time as any, so we’re going to do two songs for you tonight. So sit back and relax and try to refrain from throwing any bras or panties on the stage, it gets tangled in all the wires.”

Laughter could be heard from everywhere. Including Michael, Max noticed and then it became quiet as Alex did a count down from three.

Max leaned forward in his chair as the guitars and drums started up. He looked up at the stage and smiled. Alex looked so natural up there. He was strumming the guitar and moving his leg along with the beats.

“He looks great up there.” Liz whispered leaning close to Max. He nodded in agreement as Alex moved up to the microphone and began to sing softly.

Hope dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye

And roped me in
So mesmerizing, so hypnotizing
I am captivated, I am

Max smiled as Alex moved up closer to the microphone and raised his voice as he pounded away at his guitar strings. The crowd was yelling loudly as the beat quickened and Alex closed his eyes while practically yelling into the microphone.

Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

“He’s amazing.” Liz whispered and Max couldn’t help but agree. He hadn’t heard The Whits in a really long time. Sometimes the guys would come over and play in the garage while Max was visiting his sister and Alex, but this was totally different. They weren’t messing around up there and they sounded amazing. Alex was grinning as he opened his eyes and lowered his voice once more.

So clear
Like the diamond in your ring
Cut to mirror your intention
Oversized and overwhelmed
The shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me
So isolated, so motivated
I am certain now that I am

Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

The crowd was screaming now and Max was laughing. He only wished that Isabel could have been there to see it. The beat changed suddenly and he found himself rocking in his chair along with it. He looked over to Liz who was laughing as well and they began to nod their heads up and down with the music. Max noticed that Michael, who was slumped down in his chair was even tapping his leg along with the beat.

So turn
Up the corners of your lips
Part them and feel my finger tips
Trace the moment for forever

Defense is paper thin
Just one touch and I'll be in
Too deep now to ever swim against the current

So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away

So let me slip against the current

So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away

Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

My hope
dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption...

Alex had lowered his voice for the last few lines and then the room erupted in screaming and applause. Liz jumped up out of her chair and she wasn’t the only one. Several people were standing at that point. Max whistled loudly and Alex looked at him with the biggest grin on his face.

“Oh my God.” Liz squealed sitting back down and grabbed Max’s arm. “Weren’t they awesome. I’m speechless. People are still clapping.”

Max couldn’t help but smile. She was grinning wildly up at the stage and her face was flushed with excitement. “Yeah, they just blew everyone else out of the water.”

“Wow.” Alex said into the microphone and Max looked to see him drinking out of a water bottle that he had grabbed off one of the amps. “Thanks everybody. It really means a lot to us.”

The place exploded into another round of applause.

“You’re awesome!” Alex screamed into the microphone and then laughed as everyone screamed back at him. “Okay, everybody. We’ve still got one more song to do. And we have a special guest that we’d like to invite up on stage with us. Give a big welcome to one of your hostesses for the evening. The very talented, Maria DeLuca.”

Another round of applause erupted and Max looked at Liz. She was looking around for her friend and then she smiled and he knew that she had spotted her. Max didn’t look though, he just stared down to where Liz was tightly holding his hand.

* * *

Liz couldn’t stop smiling. She had a feeling that her face would probably be hurting in the morning, but she didn’t care. She was having too much fun. She was just so happy to be out of the house and not thinking about anything except for what was happening in front of her. She was living in the moment and it felt great.

Alex and the band had blown her away. She remembered them being good in high school, but tonight they were amazing. Alex and the guys had looked so happy up there and it made her happy. It was such a relief for her to be having a good time and everyone else having a good time.

She also couldn’t contain the excitement that she was feeling for Maria. It was like Maria was born to be on the stage and Liz hadn’t seen her up there since last year when she had visited her in New York. And she knew that Maria needed this. This was Maria’s happiness and Liz hoped that things would be different for the two of them after tonight. It was a night for new beginnings.

After Alex called out her name, Liz spotted Maria standing off to the left with a tray in her hands. She knew that Maria was trying to play it cool, but the excitement was pouring out of her. You didn’t have to know her to see that, Liz was sure everyone could tell. Maria looked over to her and winked.

Liz smiled back at her and squeezed her hand. It wasn’t until then that she realized she was holding on to Max’s hand. She looked over to him slightly embarrassed, but he just smiled at her and squeezed back. She laughed then. Even Max was having a good time, which just made her happier because he hadn’t been in good spirits either lately. It felt good because if she deserved a good time, he did as well. They both deserved some happiness. Liz had a feeling she might explode by the time the night was over; she was so excited.

She looked back up to the stage to see Maria move up to the microphone. Alex had moved off to the right of her.

“Hey guys.” Maria said smiling and waving slightly. “I’m Maria and I know that a lot of you don’t know me. I just moved here from New York and I have to say that I’m loving Roswell so far. It’s much better than New York.”

“Yeah right!” Someone yelled and there was laughter from the crowd.

“Yeah, well…” Maria said rolling her eyes and shrugging. “Anyways, these wonderful guys here were nice enough to let me join them up here. Aren’t they amazing?”

Again the room erupted in applause. Liz felt Max pull his hand away to get her attention.

“Look.” He whispered and pointed at the bar where the owner was standing and looking up at the stage. He didn’t look very happy.

“She’s dead.” Liz said looking back to Max and shaking her head. He nodded in agreement and then they laughed because they knew that Maria didn’t care.

“Okay.” Maria said. “So here’s an original song by me that these guys were kind enough to learn and help me out with this performance. Thanks.”

Liz leaned forward in her seat. Michael was still slumped in his chair, so she could see perfectly. Her heart began to race as the guys started up their instruments. She was so nervous. But a moment later when Maria stepped up to the microphone, it was obvious that she wasn’t the least bit nervous and her voice rolled out into the crowd.

Well, I couldn't tell you
Why she felt that way
She felt it everyday
And I couldn't help her
I just watched her make
The same mistakes again

What's wrong, What's wrong now?
Too many, too many problems
Don't know where she belongs
Where she belongs

Right at that moment Michael sat up straight in his chair. Liz had to move slightly so she could see. But, she felt her heart sink suddenly listening to the words coming out of her friend’s mouth. The guys picked up the beat and Maria grabbed the microphone with one hand and sang right into the mic.

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside
With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

Open your eyes
And look outside
Find the reasons why
You've been rejected
And now you can't find
What you've left behind

Liz sat back in the chair and just stared up at the stage. The reality of what Maria was singing hitting her like a brick. She glanced over to Max to see what his reaction was, but he was only smiling up at the stage. Of course he wouldn’t think anything. He didn’t know. But, Liz did. She knew what Maria was singing about.

Be strong, be strong now
Too many, too many problems
Don't know where she belongs
Where she belongs

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside
With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

Maria took the microphone off the stand and held it in her both of her hands. Liz watched as she paced the stage. Her voice floated out into the crowd. There was no other sound except for her friend’s words.

Her feelings she hides
Her dreams she can't find
She's losing her mind
She's falling behind
And she can't find her place
She's losing her faith
She's falling from grace
She's all over the place, yeah

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside
With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

She's lost inside, lost inside
Oh oh
She's lost inside, lost inside
Oh oh oh

The last few lines she sang softly with her eyes closed and then the music faded. For a moment there wasn’t a sound and then suddenly the room erupted into an enormous applause. Louder than anything Liz had ever heard before. She looked around the table. Michael was still sitting in his chair, he wasn’t moving, just staring up at the stage. She looked to see Max on his feet whistling. Liz forced her hands together. At first she was confused. Why was everyone clapping? Then she snapped back into reality. None of them knew. All they saw was an amazing performance. Maria owned the stage and her voice was flawless and beautiful. To them it was only a song, but Liz knew better. It wasn’t a song. It was real life.

“I had no idea she could do that.” Max said sitting back in his chair and people were still yelling. “I can’t believe she hasn’t been signed for a record deal. Wasn’t that amazing?”

Liz forced a smile on her face and nodded. “Yeah, she’s great.”

“Michael?” Max asked turning to him. “Can you believe that?”

Liz turned to look at the other man and saw that he was staring at her intently. She gave him a curious look. Why the hell was he looking at her like that? What did she do?

“Thank you.” Maria’s voiced floated out over the applause and Liz looked up at her friend. She was standing up there smiling brilliantly. “Thank you so much.”

The crowd burst into another round of applause.

Liz sat back in her chair thinking. Maria looked so happy up there. Liz couldn’t remember the last time she had seen her so happy. It was definitely the first she had smiled like that since moving to Roswell. Maybe that’s what she had needed. Maybe being up on stage was good for Maria. Liz concentrated on her friends face and it really hit her how much Maria needed to be up on that stage.

“Wow.” Maria breathed into the microphone. “You guys are great. I’m so happy that you enjoyed it. How about we hear another round for The Whits.”

There was more applause and Liz watched as Maria grabbed Alex and began to hug him.

Liz smiled. She wouldn’t worry about it now. Maria finally looked happy for once. She didn’t want to ruin her friend’s night. And she didn’t want to ruin her own night. It was too important to her.

She looked to Max, who was still smiling at her. She smiled back.

Tonight wasn’t a night to dwell on the past. She could worry about it all tomorrow. Right now she just wanted to have a good time.

A waitress came over and asked if they wanted more drinks.

Max shook his head.

Liz raised her hand at the same time Michael was nodding for another.

CHAPTER 13 - NEW PART 03/07!

* * * * *

Hey guys!

I'm back. Finally. Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm feeling much better and it gave me a lot of time to work on this, so I have another long part. I hope there are no objections. Thanks for sticking around everyone!

I also wanted to thank those who nominated Madison for an award. Seriously, I was shocked and so touched all at the same time. It really means a lot.

So, here are the thank you's (you're all so awesome):

LysCat: I’m so flattered that you check for updates for this fic, sorry that there hasn’t been any lately! And I’m glad that you keep returning despite my lacking in the Max and Liz moments. (Yes, I do feel guilty. lol.) Well, you won’t have to wait long for the Tess/Kyle answers…They are coming soon. I promise. Thanks for the feedback!

ERIN: You know what I notice about you? You always go and leave me this feedback that makes me blush and then you always end up calling me a ‘Freak’. Make up your mind WOMAN! ;) I thought that’d you’d like the Isabel/Max talk. lol. Can’t answer much more of your questions…but they do have answers! I SWEAR! About QaF *sigh* I love Brian too. And damn that Prom episode…It’s like my favourite but I always end up crying. Every time! What a show!

Jason's Lover: Thank you so much!

begonia9508: I’m glad you liked the long part! I hope it made up for the long wait ;) So glad you liked Liz…Wasn’t sure how people were going to re-act to her reaction (that’s a weird sentence! lol) Thanks for the feedback.

behrlyliz: Not liking Kyle, I see. lol. Sorry about the no kiss! Well, remember Michael knows that something is going on with Maria, so when he heard the song he knew what she was singing about. Plus, he has his suspicions about Tess and Kyle. I’m glad you liked the performances! Thanks for the feedback.

Liz86000: Okay! OKAY! I’m sorry for stopping there! Can you forgive me? More Kyle hating I see. lol. Yes, Michael was being nice (in his way ;) ) Maria being hired as a singer? I think that’s a great idea! And I was lmao at the whole Max being blind and damaged because of Tess! Thanks for the feedback, I got a real kick out of it! :)

Earth2Mama: Aww. Thank you. Did you download the songs? I love them too. I often listen to them when I’m writing this and thought that they fit perfectly (especially ‘Nobody’s Home’). Glad you liked them!

icequeen: Well, here’s another long chapter for ya! So glad you liked the songs. You’re right on the money about Michael. Also glad you liked the Max/Isabel talk. And I think that Max is doing a good job with Madison as well, thanks :) Yes, there’s always room for hope…Especially in this story! Thanks for reading.

tequathisy: Thanks. You’re so sweet. I’m so happy that you liked the scene at Open Mic, I had a very difficult time with it, so that means a lot. Oh, and I couldn’t be any more happier that you liked Alex. I thought he rocked too! ;)

janesdilemma: Yay! More Alex Love! lol. Oh and 'rock the casbah’ is my new fav saying! ;) Yeah, hand holding is definitely not better than kissing! Lol. But, I’m glad you liked it. So happy you love Liz and Madison’s relationship…puts a big smile on my face! Thanks for the feedback!

Itzstacie: Well, first of all let me just tell you that your daughter has a beautiful name! :) Yes, my name is Krista. lol. Is it spelt the same? Cause I’ve never met anyone with the same spelling. Yes, poor Max…He really doesn’t want to think about who his wife left him for! Thanks for the feedback!

FamersAmers: Thanks. The Tess thing is coming up soon! I promise.

Elci: Thanks.

Emz80m: Thank you. I’m so glad you like it!

linliz68: Aww. Thanks, I’m glad you like Madison. Yeah, Kyle didn’t get to say much did he? lol. He’ll get his say though, soon enough. So happy you liked The Whits…It’s really hard writing as a person is singing. lol. I’m very happy that you liked the chapter! ;)

purpleant: Thanks so much. I thought Liz was awesome too! ;)

SmileeUk: Thank you! And so happy that you understand where Max is coming from. Thanks for reading.

maxnlizforever: Thanks! Well, I love that you loved it and I love you for leaving wonderful feedback (Now, there’s a sentence! lol.) And yes…Friendship is the best way to start a relationship. Glad you liked how Liz and Michael were both perceptive regarding Maria’s song! Ah! QaF and the win/lose situation…ITA. It’s such a conflicting feeling. Don’t they realize they are screwing with our lives! lol. So, I’m guessing your spoiled for the season? I’ve been avoiding them like the plague. I spoiled myself for the last season of Roswell, which I regretted. So, I’m trying to be strong for QaF. Yes, five wonderful years…My life is going to be so empty now! About your quote: that was a great scene. I love when Brian acts like a loser. Just makes him more sexy! ;)

Bixie: Glad you liked Liz’s moment to shine. She did go, didn’t she? lol. Snails pace…I apologize for that, but I love the phrase! ;) Yeah, Michael’s just not having a good time…No one will tell him anything and that’s just driving him nuts because he has his suspicions about everyone and everything. lol. Are you trying to guilt me into long posts from now on? lol. Well, this one’s a long one…because yes, I do feel guilty. Thank you very much! I’m just kidding! Thanks for the feedback.

g7silvers: Ah, more Kyle hating. I love it! lol. Michael’s mood is definitely because he picked up on what Maria was singing. Thanks for the feedback!

Lizza: THANK YOU. Glad you liked the bra and panties remark! Thanks for reading!

frenchkiss70: Thanks. So happy you like Liz. And yes, you were right about her and Kyle. Though, there is a little more that will come out later on. I’m glad she told him off too. Yes, Max was having his own pity party. I am working very hard at getting him to get his shit together. lol. I know I am going to have to also work very hard at convincing you…I hope that I can. But, I guess only time will tell. You’re totally on to Michael, which pleases me beyond words! A question I can answer: Liz’s reaction to Maria’s song was solely based on what Maria went through. This is one of Liz’s biggest concerns right now. Thanks for the feedback, I always look forward to it!

Smac: Thank you so much! I liked the castrating comment as well, I’ve always wanted to say it! lol. Kyle will have his time to speak, I promise. All of them loose and crazy? Hmm…that’s an interesting idea! ;) You’ll have to wait and see…Glad you liked the performances. Thanks for the feedback!

xmag: Wow. I’m so flattered to be your exception! (I mean that sincerely, I’m just not sure it sounded that way. lol. But, it really means a lot, I assure you.) Aw, I’m glad you like Madison! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy! Thanks for the feedback.

cherie: I believe you are right about Michael, well I know you are. ;) Glad you like that Max is finally paying attention to Liz. Oh, Kyle…It’s coming soon. Thanks for the feedback!

rigel: Thank you!

roswellluver: Thanks for the feedback!

mareli: Well, thank you very much. I’m glad it wasn’t a waste of paper! lol. So happy you are enjoying it. Thanks for the feedback!

So, here it is. Enjoy.

Chapter 13

Max stood outside of the bar smoking a cigarette and holding his cell phone to his ear with his other hand. He had come outside just as Alex and Maria were coming down from the stage to call Isabel. He had wanted to check and see how Madison was doing.

“She’s sleeping now.” Isabel sighed. “And I’m telling you, I look like a hooker.”

Max laughed and leaned against the brick wall. “You’re the one that let her give you a make-over.”

“Well, I didn’t think she’d turn her own aunt into a whore.”

“That happened long before Madison came along.” He joked taking a long drag.

“What did you just say?” She snapped and Max could just picture the look on her face.

“Nothing.” He said trying to sound serious, but ended up bursting into a fit of laughter. “I didn’t say anything.”

There was silence on the other end, but he continued to laugh. Finally he heard his sister’s voice. “Are you laughing? Like genuinely laughing?”

“Uh huh.” Max mumbled because he was trying to compose himself.

“Max.” She said in a singsong voice. “Are you having a good time?”

Max wiped at his eyes. “Yeah. I’m having a great time. You shoulda been here Izzy. Alex and the guys were amazing. And Maria, well you’ve just got to see her to believe it. It was fantastic.”

“I wish I could have gone too.” She sighed into the phone. “I’m just not feeling too great lately. I didn’t know that being pregnant was going to feel like this.”

“How are you now?” He asked concerned because of the tone of her voice.

“I’m okay now. Just tired.” She replied and then her voice lightened. “But, I’m so happy that you’re having a good time.”

“I promised, didn’t I?” He told her smiling to himself.

“Yes you did.” She said softly. “And I’m so happy for you.”

Max stood up straight and strained his ears for a moment. “Are you crying?”

“No.” She sniffed.

“For God sake, Izzy.” He said rolling his eyes. “Stop crying.”

“I can’t help it.” She whispered into the phone. “I’m just so…”

“Emotional.” He finished for her and threw down his cigarette. “I’m hanging up now.”

“Why?”

“Because, you’re blubbering like a baby.” He said smiling.

“I’m having a baby. I can’t help it if my hormones are out of control.” She replied and now her tone was one of irritation.

He smirked even though she couldn’t see him. “Get your act together and cut out this pity party shit.”

“You asshole!” She replied to him for throwing her own words back at her. Max laughed because he could hear the smile on her face.

“Love you.” He said and ended the call.

He walked back into the bar laughing and had to practically push his way back to his table. The place was more packed than he had realized. He finally spotted the table. Alex and Maria had made their way over. There were more people standing around the table smiling and talking with the two of them. Max presumed that they were telling them they liked the sets that they had done. Maria was standing beside the chair that Alex was sitting in and she was nodding her head at some woman that was talking excitedly. Liz was still in her seat, having another a beer and laughing at something Alex was saying. Michael was still in his seat as well and he still looked upset. Max made his way to the table, trying to avoid bumping into the swarm of people hanging around.

“Hey!” Max called when he had reached the table. He walked around to where Alex was sitting. “You were amazing up there.”

Alex stood up smiling and hugged Max. “Thanks, man. It felt really good to be back up there again.”

“Seemed as if you had never been off it.” Max said pulling away. He actually had to yell over the noise of the crowd. There were no other bands going up tonight, they had been the last ones, but music was playing loudly out of the speakers.

Suddenly Alex was pushed out of the way as Maria threw herself at Max. “Hey! Wasn’t that incredible?”

“Yeah.” He called hugging her back. “You were amazing.”

“It felt amazing. I’ve never felt like that before.” She said looking up at him and Max had never seen anyone seem so happy. “And The Whit’s were so fucking great.”

Max laughed in agreement and patted Alex, who was now back in his seat, on his shoulder. “Yes, they were.”

“Hey!” Someone called and Max turned to see Maria’s boss standing beside them looking at Maria. “I’m not paying you to stand around.”

“Sorry.” Maria told him trying to look ashamed but the smile never left her face.

“Get back to work.” He told her and started to leave, but turned back around. “And I want to talk to you after your shift.”

“You think he’s going to fire me?” Maria asked once he had left.

“Probably.” Max told her nodding his head.

She shrugged. “Well, I better try and make some good tips tonight.”

She turned then and walked over to where Liz was sitting and talking with Alex. She whispered something in her ear, making her laugh. Then Maria ran off and Max walked over to sit back next to Liz.

“How’s Madison?” She asked once he had taken his seat.

“Sleeping.” He said laughing. “She and Isabel had a pretty interesting night.”

“It’s too bad she didn’t come.” Liz said turning to Alex.

Alex nodded. “She hasn’t been feeling well lately. How is she? I was going to go and call her.”

“She’s okay. She said she just felt tired so she was going to go to bed.” Max told him as the waitress came over to ask if they wanted more drinks.

Liz and Michael ordered another round. Alex refused, but Max told him that he would drive home so Alex could have some drinks and celebrate. So, Alex ordered a beer and Max got a Pepsi.

“God I missed this.” Liz said suddenly.

“What?” Max asked her loudly.

“Just going out and having fun. It’s been too long since I’ve done it.” She said nodding her head and looking around the room with wide eyes.

“What, does Kyle never take you out anywhere?” Alex asked her leaning forward so she could hear him. “How come he didn’t come?”

That was a good question Max thought. In fact, he hadn’t seen Kyle at all since he started talking to Liz. He knew that they were dating, they had been since high school, but now that he thought about it, Kyle never seemed to be around.

“They broke up.” Michael stated leaning back in his chair. He was staring at Liz.

Max frowned. What the hell was going on with Michael? He had barely spoken at all since they got there and he just kept staring at Liz with questions in his eyes. Max looked at his friend and wondered how many drinks he had had. Michael tended to get a little cocky when he had too much to drink.

“You broke up?” Alex questioned and Max looked to see Liz tare her eyes away from Michael. She looked down at the table for a moment and then looked to Alex and then to him.

“Yeah, we broke up.” She said waving her hand. “It’s not a big deal. It’s in the past.”

“I’m sorry.” Max offered knowing that it wasn’t the right thing to say. He had hated when people had said it to him about Tess, but now he knew why they did it. What else could you say?

“Don’t be.” She insisted and finished off her beer. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”

The four of them sat in an awkward silence for a moment. Max glanced around the table uncomfortably. Michael was picking the label of his beer bottle. Max thought he looked like he wanted to say something, but he just concentrated on shredding the paper off the bottle. Alex was touching the bandage on his forehead absently. He looked to Liz to see her looking right at him, but once she caught his eye she turned away. Max thought desperately for something to say and was saved by the waitress coming back with their drinks.

“Michael.” Alex said punching him on the shoulder once the waitress had walked away. “Are you going to come over tomorrow?”

“I dunno.” Michael replied shrugging. “I might be busy.”

“Isabel’s going to be pissed if you don’t.” Alex said pointing at him. “Max cancelled because he’s taking Madison out shopping for school clothes and then she asked Tess and she said that she couldn’t come.”

Max shook his head and held up his hand. “No, Madison doesn’t want to go shopping anymore. With me at least. She says that I have no taste in clothes. So, I was thinking that I’d just spend the night at your house tonight and then stay tomorrow. It’s easier than going home tonight anyways. I left my car at home remember?”

Alex nodded. “Good. At least someone is coming.”

Michael ignored the pointed look that Alex was giving him. “I said maybe.”

“Hey Liz,” Alex said suddenly turning towards her. “You should come too.”

“What’s going on tomorrow?” She asked.

“It’s just a barbeque at my place. Nothing big, but you’re welcome to join us.”

She smiled and shook her head. “I don’t want to impose.”

“I’m inviting.” Alex told her smiling. “Besides, Isabel needs to find some girlfriends. I can’t handle her on my own. Yeah, you should definitely come. You’d been saving my life. Bring Maria too.”

Liz laughed. “That’s really nice of you.”

“You should come.” Max insisted because it looked like she was going to refuse. “It’ll be fun.”

Liz hesitated and took a drink from her beer.

“You better go.” Michael warned her. “If she finds out that you were invited and didn’t go, it’ll get ugly.”

“Really?” Liz asked laughing.

“Oh yeah. See Alex’s forehead.” Michael nodded and pointed to the bandage. “That’ll be you.”

Max laughed at that and Alex shook his head.

“I bumped into the door.” He told Liz and then shrugged. “But I wouldn’t put it past her to do something like that.”

“Well, if you put it that way.” Liz said laughing and then she nodded. “I’d love to come. I’ll ask Maria too.”

“Good.” Alex told her smiling and waved the waitress over because he was done his beer.

Max leaned over to Liz. “It’ll be fun. I promise.”

“I trust you.” She said smiling at him and he stared at her for a moment. She had said it really softly, but it echoed in his ears even over the loud music.

Then the waitress came back. Max hadn’t even finished his Pepsi, but the others got another round of beer.

* * *

“That was not me!” Liz squealed. Her face was red from laughing so hard.

“I’m almost positive it was you.” Alex insisted trying to keep a straight face.

“I think he’s right.” Max said laughing as well.

It was two hours later and the four of them were telling stories about when they had been in high school. They were comparing parties and school functions and repeating gossip. It was also two hours and a lot more drinks later. Max was certain that Alex and Liz were drunk. Michael seemed tipsy, but he had cut down on his drinks. There was no stopping Liz and Alex though.

“I don’t know what party you guys are talking about, but I did not dance on a table.” Liz insisted still laughing.

“Yes you did.” Michael insisted and even he was laughing at this point. “You ripped off your top too. It was a red bra. I never forget a bra.”

“No way.” Liz said shaking her head. “You guys are fucked. There is no way in hell I would ever do that.”

Max laughed at her insistence. It wasn’t true; they were just picking on her. But, her reaction was worth it.

“Don’t lie.” Michael smirked. “You wanna do it right now, don’t you?”

Alex and Max cracked up at this point. Liz was staring at Michael with wide eyes.

“I can’t believe you said that! You’re such a pervert. Tell him Max…Tell him what an ass he is.”

Max looked at her and shrugged. “There’s not that many people here.”

He received a slap for that insinuation. It was true though; the place had cleared out quite a bit.

“You’re supposed to be on my side.” Liz accused him and all he could was smile sheepishly at her.

“What’s going on?” Maria asked coming up to the table, still smiling.

“They think I’m a stripper.” Liz moaned and pressed her head against Maria’s stomach.

Maria looked down at her and played with her hair. “You are smashed.”

“No I’m not.” Liz muttered, not moving.

Maria looked around the table and settled her eyes on Max. He was the only one who appeared to be sober. “She’s drunk.”

“Oh yeah.” Max said laughing.

“Thanks a lot.” Maria said shaking her head. “I have to go home with her.”

Max smirked and pointed at Alex. “I have to go home with him.”

Maria turned to look at Alex who was sitting beside her. He was holding his empty beer bottle up in the air and letting the last drops fall down into his open mouth. Maria laughed and grabbed the bottle from his hand. Alex looked up at her smiling with beer all over his chin.

“Payback’s a bitch.” Maria told Max as Liz sat back up in her chair.

“Can we get another round?” She asked looking up at Maria.

Maria shook her head. “We’re closing up soon. Sorry honey. Besides, you really don’t need anymore.”

Liz opened her mouth to argue, but then sighed. “Okay. Can we go home now? My head feel’s funny.”

Maria nodded. “Soon. I just have to talk to Gary so he can fire me. He’s busy now, but I can’t leave until I talk to him.”

“Okay.” Liz said nodding.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Maria told them and walked away.

“Alex is going to puke.” Michael announced and Max looked to see Alex staring at the table.

“No I’m not.” He said, but didn’t look up.

“We should probably get going.” Max said nodding. That’s the last thing he needed was Alex puking everywhere. He looked over to Liz who was sitting there laughing to herself. He couldn’t leave her here though and he wasn’t sure how long Maria was going to be.

“I’ll be right back.” He said getting up and went over to the bar where Maria was cleaning up.

“Hey, I gotta get Alex home. I’ll drop off Liz too if you want.” He told her leaning against the bar.

“Yeah, okay.” She said nodding. “I don’t know how long this is going to take. But she needs to get to bed.”

“Are you going to get home okay?” He asked her.

“Yeah. I’ll be fine.”

He nodded. “Okay, so I’ll see you tomorrow?”

Earlier, Liz had asked Maria if she wanted to come over to Alex and Isabel’s the next day and she had said yes. They had made arrangements that Michael, who finally said he’d go as well, would pick the two of them up on his way over.

“Yeah. Thanks, Max.”

“No problem. And you were great tonight.” He told her again smiling.

“I know.” She said flipping her hair in exaggeration.

He laughed at her and then went back over to the table.

“Okay, let’s go.” He said standing between Alex and Liz.

“I can’t.” Liz told him. “I have to wait for Maria.”

“It’s okay. I’ll take you home.” He told her as Alex dragged himself to his feet.

“No.” She said shaking her head. “I can’t leave her.”

“She said it’s fine.” Max reassured her.

Liz looked up at him in a panic. “No, she can’t go home by herself. What if something happens to her?”

“I’ll wait for her.” Michael said suddenly.

Max looked over at him and he shrugged. “Take them home. I didn’t bring my car anyways, so I’ll wait for Maria and walk her home.”

Max nodded. Michael didn’t live far and the Crashdown wasn’t that far either. He bent down beside Liz. “Michael will wait for her, okay?”

She looked to Max and then rolled her eyes to look at Michael who was sitting across from her. “Do you promise?”

Michael held up his hand and nodded. “I swear.”

She stared at him for moment and then nodded back. “You know, you’re not the asshole that you pretend to be.”

He smirked at her. “Thanks.”

“Okay,” Max said grabbing her arm and pulled her to her feet. “Let’s go.”

He called a goodbye to Michael and then guided Liz and Alex out the door. It proved to be more difficult because the two of them tried to get out the door at the same time. They smashed into each other laughing hysterically. Alex hit the wall making him laugh harder and Max caught Liz before she hit the floor.

“We have to do this again.” Liz said laughing as Max steadied her back on her feet.

“You’ll rethink that in the morning.” He told her shaking his head and they made it out the door this time.

* * *

“Alex, I’ll be right back. Okay?” Max said as he parked Alex’s car in the alley beside the Crashdown.

“Yep. I’ll be right here.” He muttered from the passenger seat.

Max hopped out of the front and opened the back door to where Liz was lying across the backseat.

“C’mon.” He said holding out his hand. She grabbed it and he pulled her out of the car. She bumped into him and he held her to his side and walked her to the door.

“My legs feel funny.” She said laughing. “It’s like I don’t even have any.”

“Where are your keys?” He asked when they were standing in front of the door.

“In my purse.” She said. “I think.”

“Where’s your purse?” He asked looking her over to see she didn’t have one.

She looked up at him in concentration. “In the car. I think.”

He nodded and turned her towards the wall. He pushed her against it, so she was leaning and carefully took his hands away from her. “Stand like that. Don’t move, I’ll get your keys.”

He turned back and jogged to the car.

“I think that they are in there!” Liz yelled. “Max, I only think that they are! I don’t know if that is true! I just think that they might be in there! Possibly Max! I might be lying!”

He couldn’t help laughing at her as he quickly scanned the backseat and saw her purse lying on the floor. He grabbed it and jogged back to the door to find that she had slid down the wall and was sitting on the ground.

“I fell.” She said flatly looking up at him with her hair covering half of her face.

“It’s okay.” He said smiling and grabbed the keys to open the door. “I found the keys.”

She laughed and clapped her hands. “I wasn’t lying!”

He swung the door open and then bent down to pick her up. He wrapped one of her arms around his shoulder and placed his other hand around her waist. “Okay, we have to go up the stairs now.”

She sighed and let him pull her inside. “I don’t like stairs.”

“Me neither.” He agreed and it turned out to be true. He had to go up them sideways with Liz laughing the whole time. Finally they entered her apartment. It was dark, but he didn’t bother looking for the light. She told him where her room was and they made their way there bumping into various things on the way.

They went into her room and the lights from outside lit it just enough through the window that he could see.

“We made it.” She said happily as he walked her over to the bed. He took her arm from around his shoulders and she fell into the bed lying on her back.

“Okay,” He sighed. “You get some sleep. I’m going to take your keys so I can lock the door and I’ll give them to you tomorrow.”

“Thanks Max.” She whispered smiling with her eyes closed.

“You’re welcome.” He said and turned to leave but she called his name.

“Yeah?”

“Can you take off my boots?” She asked holding up one of her legs with the knee-high boots on.

He looked at her for a moment and scratched the back of his neck suddenly feeling uncomfortable. “Yeah, okay.”

He walked over and knelt down beside the bed. He gently took her leg in his hand and pulled down the zipper.

“Do you know what I remember from high school?” She asked suddenly.

He paused and looked up to see that her eyes were still closed. “What do you remember?”

“I remember when I used to go and watch all the football games.”

He laughed and pulled the boot off and dropped it on the floor. “You mean basketball.”

“No.” She said and he glanced up to see her shaking her head with her eyes still closed.

He unzipped the other boot. “Kyle was on the basketball team. It was me that was on the football team.”

“I know. I went to all the football games.”

He had the other boot halfway off and stopped. He looked up at her confused. But, she still didn’t open her eyes.

“Liz?” He whispered. She didn’t say anything and he pulled the other boot off. He stood up slowly and stared at her for a moment. Her eyes were closed and her hair was fanned out around the pillow. The soft light from the street illuminated her face. She was sleeping now. He watched her for a moment longer.

She had gone to all the football games? That just didn’t make any sense to him. But, she was drunk and she hadn’t been making much sense the last little while anyways. It was the way she had said it though. She had sounded so sure.

Max shook his head and headed back downstairs to the car.

“Did you get fired?”

Maria turned around to see Michael leaning against the wall beside the door that she had just walked out of.

“What are you doing here?” She asked suspiciously.

“I promised I’d walk you home.” He shrugged.

“Really?”

He pushed himself off the wall. “Liz forced me.”

Maria narrowed her eyes at him. Michael got on her nerves, but tonight she didn’t care. It had been too good of a night. She was still soaring from being up on stage again. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt that good.

“Are you going to be nice?”

He nodded. “I’m always nice.”

“I’m going to ignore that.” She said laughing. “Well, let’s go then.”

She turned and began walking up the street. A moment later he fell in step beside her.

“So, did he fire you?”

She smiled and shook her head. “No. He said that he was so angry when I went up there, but then by the time I was done he didn’t care. He said that I brought the house down. But, he was mad that I didn’t tell him and just went up there. And he said that if I wanted, I could have the next Open Mic night off to perform again.”

He smirked. “He’s only doing that because he knows you’ll bring in customers.”

“So what?” She said looking up at him. “It doesn’t matter. As long as I can do it, who cares? Maybe he’ll promote it or something.”

“You don’t care if he uses you?”

“Not if I’m getting what I want.” She told him honestly. It didn’t matter what Gary’s motivations were. All she wanted to do was sing and if he was willing to let her do that, it didn’t cause her any harm. He got his customers and she got her audience. It was the perfect situation.

They walked in silence most of the way. It was a comfortable silence though, which surprised her. Michael could be a real jerk sometimes, but tonight they just walked.

“You did a really good job up there tonight.”

She looked up at him surprised and saw that he was staring down at his feet. He hadn’t said anything about it all night and she hadn’t expected him to.

“Thanks.” She said smiling genuinely.

“It was an interesting song.” He said looking up at her. She looked away because there was something in his eyes that she didn’t like.

She shrugged as they turned the corner and the Crashdown became visible up ahead. “It’s just a song.”

“You wrote it right?”

She glanced over to see him looking down at her. He knew that she wrote it; she knew that.

“Yeah, I write all my songs.”

He was silent again and she didn’t say anything because she didn’t like where the conversation was going.

When they had almost reached the door he stopped walking. “When did you write it?”

“What does that matter?” She had to call back because she had continued walking.

“When did you write it?” He repeated. She stopped at the front door of the restaurant and looked back to see him still standing where he had stopped.

“It doesn’t matter when I wrote it.” She said angrily, feeling her stomach begin to turn.

“If it doesn’t matter, why won’t you tell me?” He demanded walking towards her. “Just tell me when you wrote it.”

She felt anger surge towards him. What right did he have asking her that? What right did he have shitting on her on her big night?

“Fine.” She practically yelled and he stopped immediately. “I wrote it on the bus ride here. I wrote it when I left New York and came to Roswell. Are you happy now?”

He stood there for a moment and then began to walk towards her again. “I know. I know that’s when you wrote it.”

She held up her hand. “Look Michael, I don’t know who you think you are. But, you don’t know me, okay? So don’t pretend that you do. You don’t know anything about me.”

“You’re wrong.” He said and his voice was suddenly so soft that she almost couldn’t hear him and that scared her.

“It’s just a fucking song.” She said grabbing her keys and shoving them in the door.

“Maria.”

She threw the door open and turned back to him. “Leave me alone Michael. It was just a fucking song.”

He took a step towards the door and she slammed it shut and locked it. They stood staring at each other for a moment and then he walked away.

Maria took a deep breath and leaned against the door. Her mind was racing. It was only a song, she kept telling herself. So, why did Michael act like it was much more than that?

Yeah, she had written the song after she left Billy. But, that didn’t mean anything. Billy didn’t mean anything to her any more. It was all in the past. And Michael didn’t know anything about Billy.

So, why the hell was he acting like he did?

That question was still running through Maria’s mind when she fell asleep later that night.

* * *

“You’re an asshole.” Liz muttered reaching over and turning down the car stereo. Her head was pounding and nothing seemed to help. It was the middle of the afternoon, but her hangover hadn’t disappeared. She had taken aspirin and that hadn’t helped.

Michael wasn’t helping either. He had shown up at her place to pick up her and Maria up and take them to the barbeque. He was talking too loud, laughing too loud, slamming the door shut too loudly and he kept turning up the radio. He didn’t even like the song.

“I’m sorry.” He said from the drivers seat. “Does your head still hurt?”

She glared at him. “Like I said you’re an asshole.”

“Can’t argue with that.” Maria muttered from the backseat. Liz didn’t know what the hell was going on between the two of them. As soon as Michael had shown up Maria had become miserable. She had blatantly refused to sit in the passenger’s seat when Liz offered it to her so she could have the back to herself.
Liz closed her eyes and rested her head on the back of the seat. She had thought about canceling, but then felt extremely bad. She had said she would go and it was her own fault she felt like shit. She had thought of using the excuse that she had forgot because she really didn’t remember much of the night before, but that just seemed like a rotten thing to do.

“Why didn’t you just stay home?” Michael asked then turning the car to the right and Liz slid against the seat.

“Then take us back.” Liz replied not actually meaning it. She knew that he wouldn’t anyways.

“No way.” He said. “I’m not going in there alone to explain why you two didn’t show up. Isabel already called me this morning all excited. Believe me, she’s not the woman that you want to give bad news to.”

Liz laughed. “You’re scared of her.”

“Damn right I am. She’s nuts and being pregnant is helping any.”

“I’m going to tell her you said that.” Maria said suddenly laughing.

“Fuck off!” Michael cried out and Liz opened her eyes in shock. She couldn’t believe that he would say that. He shook his head immediately. “Not you Maria. Look at all the cars.”

Liz turned to look up ahead and saw the street was packed with cars.

“What’s going on?” Maria asked leaning forward.

“Looks like someone’s having a party.” Liz said pointing to where she had spotted a house covered in decorations.

“They took up all the spots.” Michael muttered scanning the road.

“There’s one.” Maria said pointing to where a car was pulling out.

Michael sped up and pulled in to the empty spot. “We’re going to have to walk a little.”

“This is a nice neighborhood.” Maria commented when they were walking up the sidewalk a few minutes later. Michael was walking ahead of them.

She nodded. “Nice place to raise a family.”

“Yeah, Roswell’s really a cute town.” Maria replied looking around.

“What’s going on with you and Michael?” Liz asked bluntly. Michael was far enough ahead that he couldn’t hear her.

Maria sighed. “Let’s just say it wasn’t a pleasant walk home last night.”

“He try to put the moves on you again?” Liz asked her laughing.

“Something like that.” Maria muttered.

Liz rolled her eyes and looked up to where Michael had stopped on the sidewalk. “It’s this one.” He told them and they followed him across the lawn.

She looked up at the house. It was beautiful. Sometimes she wished that she could live in an actual house instead of on top of a restaurant. But she knew that she would miss it at the Crashdown, it had been her home for her entire life. She had a lot of memories there.

Michael tried the door, but it was locked so he rang the bell.

“This is some house.” Maria whistled looking around.

“Be sure to tell Isabel that. She loves compliments.” He smirked.

Liz shook her head at him. Sometimes she didn’t know what was wrong with him. He had been so moody lately.

The door opened then to a squealing Madison who was in a bathing suit.

“Uncle Mikey!” She yelled and threw herself at him. He picked her up and hugged her.

“Hello Beautiful.” He said kissing her on the cheek. Liz tolled her eyes and smiled. He was such a softie when it came to Madison.

“Mikey?” Maria snorted looking at him with a glint in her eyes.

“Hey.” He said turning to her with Madison still in his arms. “This little girl is the only one allowed to call me that.”

“Is that right?” Maria questioned looking at Madison with a smile.

“Yep.” Madison replied nodding her head making her dark curls bounce around her face. “I’m the only one.”

“Okay. If you say so.” Maria said laughing and Michael put Madison down.

“Hi Liz!” Madison said hugging her around the waist causing Liz to sway. That didn’t help her head.

“Hi Madison.” Liz winced touching her forehead.

Madison let go and looked up at her. “What’s wrong?”

“My head hurts a little bit.” Liz told her and smiled weakly.

Madison stared at her for a moment. “Uncle Alex said his head hurt too. Maybe you guys ate something bad.”

Michael laughed and called back as he went in the house. “It wasn’t something they ate. It was something they drank.”

“Was it milk?” Madison asked looking up at her seriously. “Sometimes when I drink too much milk it makes my tummy hurt.”

Liz laughed. “No honey. I don’t think it was milk.”

“Alex is feeling better. Come inside you should talk to him. He can help you.” Madison said and skipped into the house.

“That was priceless.” Maria said laughing.

“Shut up.” Liz said but smiled and the two of them followed Madison into the house.

* * *
“Are you feeling better?” Max asked Liz an hour later when they were all in the backyard.

Liz nodded. “Yeah, I feel great. That thing Isabel made me drink was amazing.”

“See, alcoholic grandmothers are good for some things.” He told her laughing. Isabel had made her drink the same brown liquid she had forced on Alex. Max had never tried it. It looked like crap and smelled like it. But, it did the trick because Alex and Liz were feeling better.

The two of them were sitting alone at the patio table. Alex was standing at the barbeque cooking all the food, he wouldn’t let anyone help. Isabel and Maria were inside the house in the kitchen getting more drinks; none of them alcoholic. Madison was swimming the pool showing off to Michael who was sitting on the edge with his feet in the water.

“I wanted to thank you for last night.” Liz said and Max turned to see her blushing. “For getting me home.”

“It was my pleasure.” He said smiling and reached in his pocket for her keys. “These are yours.”

She took them from his hand laughing softly. “I really don’t remember getting home. Maria had to tell me in the morning that you brought me home.”

He laughed. “You were pretty out of it.”

“God.” She moaned and blushed even more. “I’m so embarrassed.”

“Don’t be. We’ve all been there.” He said and patted her hand. “You should really set a limit for yourself next time though.”

“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.” She laughed and then bit her lip. “I didn’t say anything stupid or embarrassing or anything, did I?”

Max hesitated as he remembered her comment about going to the football games. It wasn’t embarrassing, but he was still confused by it. She had been drunk though, she didn’t know what she had been saying. She couldn’t even remember.

“No.” He said shaking his head and the worry left her eyes. “You didn’t say anything.”

“Dad!”

Max turned to see Madison running over with Michael following behind. She came up beside him and wiped her dripping hair out of her eyes. “You should watch me flip in the water. I can go upside down. Right Uncle Mikey?”

Michael nodded and sat down beside Max. “She looks like a mermaid.”

“Okay, we’re going to eat soon though.” Max told her and felt water dripping on to his pants. “So, we’ll wait until after.”

“Okay.” She said nodding her head causing more water to drip on to him.

“You’re soaking me.” He said pushing her gently away. “Get out of here.”

She laughed at him and then moved closer and shook her head sending water spraying all over him. “Just giving you a shower.”

“Get out of here.” He repeated again laughing and pushed her away.

“I love you Daddy. Give me hug.” She said smiling wickedly at him.

He shook his head held up his finger at her. “No. You’re soaking wet.”

“But I want to hug you.” She teased taking a step closer. “I love you so much. Let me give you a hug.”

“Madison…” He said hearing Michael and Liz laugh. And then she jumped on him and wrapped her arms around him tightly while laughing hysterically. He could feel the water soaking thorough his shirt. He picked her up and flipped her so she was hanging upside down. “You’ll be sorry!”

“Help me!” Madison shrieked through her laughter and held her hands out to Liz who was sitting in front of her. “Help me Liz!”

Liz held up her hands trying not to laugh. “I’m sorry. You asked for it.”

“Somebody help me!” Madison cried and Max swung her gently from side to side. “I’m gonna puke.”

Max laughed because he knew that she wouldn’t.

“Oh, put her down Max.” Isabel called coming out of the sliding glass doors with Maria behind her. “All the blood is rushing to her head.”

“Yeah! The blood is going to my head!” Madison yelled and Max flipped her back up so he was holding her upright in his arms.

“That’ll teach you to mess with the Master.” He said kissing her forehead and letting her down.

She ran over to Isabel. “Thank you. No one else would help me.”

They all laughed as Madison pretended to glare at Liz and Michael.

Isabel looked down at her and sighed. “You’re lucky I helped you after what you did to me last night.”

Madison crossed her arms. “I thought you looked pretty.”

“It was hot.” Alex called over wiggling his eyebrows. They all laughed again, except for Madison who just shrugged and walked over to sit next to Michael.

Max sat back down as Isabel and Maria walked over and put a bowl of punch and some cups on the table.

“Okay,” Isabel said standing up straight. “I have something to show you guys.”

“Now?” Alex called from the barbeque and she nodded. He walked over to the table to stand beside her.

“I went and had my first ultrasound yesterday morning.” She announced happily. “They gave me a photo.”
She pulled out the photo excitedly. “It’s so amazing. You guys have to see it.”

So, they gathered around her. Madison sat up on her knees in the chair in front of Alex and Isabel. Michael, who was sitting beside her stood up and Maria moved in closer. Max and Liz walked around the opposite ends of the table and moved in to see.

“Isn’t it incredible.” Isabel said laughing.

Max smiled and narrowed his eyes at the black and white photo. He was so excited to see his niece or nephew, but he couldn’t make out the baby in the picture. But, he also hadn’t been able to make out Madison in hers until the doctor had pointed it out.

“I don’t see anything.” Maria said and Max was glad he wasn’t the only one. He looked to see Liz nodding in agreement.

“Where’s the head?” Michael asked and Max squinted at the photo along with him.

“Right here.” Isabel said pointing to a shadow. “There’s the head.”

“Yeah,” Max whispered, as the image finally began to come together. “I see the head.”

“And here’s the other one.” Isabel said pointing to another spot.

There was silence for a moment. Max stared at where his sister was pointing.

“Other what?” Michael said moving back looking confused.

“The other head.” Isabel said laughed. “We’re having twins!”

“What?” Max yelled and grabbed the photo out of her hand and inspected it closely.

“Let me see! Let me see!” Madison called from the chair and tried to grab it but he moved it out of her reach.

“Oh my God.” He whispered and looked up from the photo to see Isabel being hugged by Maria and Liz at the same time. Michael was staring at Alex in shock who was nodding his head grinning.

“I don’t believe this.” Max choked out and let Madison grab the photo from his hand. “Isn’t that supposed to like skip a generation or something?”

Isabel pulled away and looked at him smiling. “I don’t know how that works. All I know is that Mom had twins and now I’m having twins.”

“Holy shit!” Michael finally said and grabbed Alex laughing.

“Twins?” Max asked shocked and then began to laugh. “This is incredible.”

He grabbed his sister and hugged her tightly. “I can’t believe it. I’m in shock.”

“You’re not that bad.” She said pulling away from him. “Alex was worse. He fainted when the doctors showed us.”

Max turned to see Alex blushing and touching the bandage on his forehead. “I didn’t bang into the door. I hit the examination table on my way down. I couldn’t tell you guys. She made me swear so we could tell you together.”

“This is so exciting!” Maria said laughing and she and Liz grabbed Isabel again.

Max walked over and grabbed Alex and hugged him while swaying back and forth. “Congratulations Alex. You’re a father times two.”

“Scary isn’t it?” Alex said when they let go of each other. “I thought one was going to be hard.”

Max was going to tell him that he was going to be a wonderful father, but Madison’s voice cut through the air.

“Mom! You came!”

Max turned to see Madison running towards the back door. Suddenly the backyard was silent as everyone watched Madison throw her arms around her mother’s waist.

Tess was standing in the doorway looking shocked with an equally shocked Kyle Valenti standing beside her.

Hey guys.

I can't even begin to express how sorry I am that this took so long. I finished up with school and then moved back home for the summer. A couple weeks ago my father had surgery (so I had to take care of him) and we thought everything went well. It didn't. So, he has to go back for another operation next week. So, I haven't really been inspired to write anything.

I had almost finished this part, but was extremely unhappy with it. I re-wrote it and it's still not the way I want it. But, I fear that if I don't post this, I never will. I hope it's not too confusing. And it is un-betaed, so there are probably a million mistakes. Sorry.

I'd just like to thank you all. I'd do it individually, but there are just so many of you. I hope you understand. But, I truly thank all of you for your support and bumps and e-mails and messages. It really means a lot to me. Especially at a time like this. You're all wonderful. I promise to respond to all of you next time around.

So, here is the next part. I know it's been a long time and I hope you're not disappointed. It's just been hard to get inspired to write anything. Again, I'm sorry for making you all wait so long.

You guys are the best :D Thank you so much :D

Enjoy.

Chapter 14

For a moment time stood still. That had never happened to Max before and it didn’t last very long. The whole backyard was silent and Max could only keep thinking the same thing over and over again. Why is she with Kyle? Why is she with Kyle? He knew that he should be reacting, but he just couldn’t move. He could only think. Why is she with Kyle?

Then chaos erupted in the backyard.

Liz was the first one to speak. “What are you doing here Kyle?”

Max looked over to see her staring at Kyle and she was shaking. He turned back when he heard Kyle’s voice sounding shocked. “What am I doing here? What are you doing here?”

Max looked to Tess, who was staring at him looking horrified. Madison was still standing there with her arms wrapped around her mother’s waist. She was staring back at the rest of them in confusion.

Michael laughed bitterly. “How fucking stupid can you be Tess!”

“Michael.” Max warned because Madison was staring at Michael in shock.

Michael turned to face him. “Oh, come on Maxwell. Can you believe that she showed up here?”

“You weren’t supposed to be here.” Tess said quietly. Max turned and glared at her. The reality of the situation finally hitting him. His wife had just shown up with her new boyfriend. He felt the anger surge through his entire body.
“What’s the difference?” Max yelled at her and she winced as if he had slapped her.

“Kyle, what the hell is going on here?” Liz spit out and Max turned to see her shaking with tears in her eyes.

“It’s not his fault.” Tess said quickly.

“Don’t fucking defend him.” Michael yelled.

“Don’t yell at her!” Kyle yelled back at him.

Max took a step forward with a sudden urge to punch the man in the face. He stopped himself though because the situation was getting out of control. All he could hear was yelling and he saw Madison crying.

He took a step forward and then Madison began to scream at all of them. “Stop yelling! Leave her alone! Stop yelling at my mom! She didn’t do anything!”

Then the back yard was silent, the only sound was Madison sobbing against her mother’s waist. Max took a deep breath. He wasn’t sure what to do. Everything was happening so fast and his mind was racing. He took a step toward his daughter, but Isabel got to her first.

“Madison, sweetie.” Isabel said softly and kneeled down. “Why don’t you come inside with me for a few minutes.”

Everyone watched in silence as Madison shook her head without moving. Tess bent down and whispered something in her ear.

“I don’t want to leave you.” Madison moaned.

Max felt his breath catch in his throat. She shouldn’t have heard all of that. He began to feel guilt swell inside of him.

He took another step forward, but Tess whispered something to her again. Madison began to sob even more and then turned to Isabel. Max watched helplessly as his sister scooped his sobbing daughter into her arms and carried her inside the house.

“You should be ashamed of yourself.” Tess spat out to Michael once she knew Madison was safely in the house out of earshot.

“Me?” Michael replied with wide eyes. “You’re the one that showed up here with him!”

Max stood silently. He didn’t know what to do. He was so angry. So fucking angry, but he knew if he opened his mouth the situation would only get worse and he knew that he couldn’t let that happen. For Madison’s sake. Even though she was inside the house, they were still in the backyard. He looked to see the fury radiating between Tess and Michael. Tess, for her daughter and Michael for his niece. Max wasn’t sure whose wrath was worse.

Tess pointed an angry finger at Michael. “You’re the one that exploded like a maniac. It’s none of your damn business what I do.”

Michael took a step forward. “That’s where you’re wrong. You showed up here and made it my business.”

“That’s enough.” Kyle interrupted and took a protective step in front of Tess.

Max opened his mouth because he just couldn’t keep quiet anymore. Every word Kyle said made him want to smash all his teeth out. He didn’t get the chance to though because before he knew it Liz was rushing across the lawn towards Kyle.

“I can’t believe you. You fucking piece of shit!” Liz whispered to him and then slapped him across the face and disappeared into the house.

The backyard grew silent again. Maria took a step forward to go after Liz, but Max stopped her.

“Let me.” He said and Maria looked like she was about to argue and then nodded her head.

“Max…” Tess called as he rushed past her.

“Not now.” He said without looking at her and went to find Liz.

* * * * *

Michael rubbed a hand across his face as Max went into the house after Liz. He tried to get a hold of himself, but he was just angry. He was angry at Tess because she had the nerve to show up here with him and embarrass Max and Liz like that. He was angry because she had thought she could just waltz in here like nothing was wrong. He was angry that he got so angry and reacted like that in front of Madison.

He looked around to see Maria standing there biting her nails and looking extremely uncomfortable. Alex was standing behind him shaking his head. He turned to where Kyle was whispering softly to Tess.

She looked up at him. “Michael, can I talk to you?”

He paused for a moment and scratched the back of his head. “Fine.”

“In private?”

“Whatever.”

Kyle whispered something again to her and she nodded. “I’ll be fine.”

Michael laughed quietly. Kyle was acting like he was going to beat Tess up the moment they were alone. He was mad, but he’d rather beat up Kyle. Michael didn’t like it when his best friend was humiliated.

“Okay. Well, Kyle. Nice to see you.” Alex said suddenly and walked over to Kyle trying to ease the tension. “How about I give you a tour of the house.”

Michael rolled his eyes as Kyle smiled weakly. Alex looked over and gestured to Maria and the three of them went into the house.

Michael stood staring hard at Tess and she made her way towards him.

* * * * *

Liz rushed down the street blindly. She had desperately tried to keep from crying, but her body would not cooperate. Tears came out uncontrollably and she wiped them away furiously with the back of her hands, but they only fell faster.

Her hand still stung from slapping Kyle’s face and she hoped that it would leave a mark. He deserved it. He had broken her heart and then made a complete fool of her.

“Liz!”

He had left her for someone else. He had left her for Tess. Of all people, it had to be her.

“Liz!”

She shook her head because if she thought about it too much she had the feeling that she would throw up.

“Liz!” Someone grabbed her arm and spun her around. Through her tears she looked up into Max’s eyes.

“Ah, shit. Are you okay?” He muttered when he saw her tears.

“Okay?” She choked out with a laugh and wiped at her eyes. “I’m wonderful. Fan-fucking-tastic.”

“I had no idea. I swear. I didn’t know that it was Kyle. She never told me who it was and I sure as hell didn’t know she was going to show up today.”

“Yeah, well you’re not the only one.” She replied holding up her hands. “I’m such an idiot. I should have known.”

He reached out and grabbed one of her hands. “There’s no way that you could have known. Neither of us did.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” She said and pulled her hand away. “It’s just typical that this would happen. I should have fucking known.”

“None of this is your fault.”

“I have to go.” She told him turning and walking away.

“Liz.” He said and ran to stand in front of her. “We should talk about this.”

She shook her head. “I can’t.”

“Liz…”

“No Max!” She yelled suddenly feeling that she had to get away from him before she did something she would regret. “I can’t deal with this right now. Don’t you get it? I can’t talk to you about this. I can’t even look at you right now.”

He tried to grab her arm but she moved out of his reach and brushed past him. He called her name again.

“Leave me alone.” She yelled without looking back.

* * * * *

“I really didn’t know that you were all going to be here.”

Michael shook his head. “You don’t need to explain it to me. I don’t care Tess.”

“But…”

“Look. I was mad. You shouldn’t have done what you did, but it’s not me that you need to explain it to.” He told her. He wasn’t angry anymore. He was too tired to be because he just couldn’t understand how things had gotten this bad.

“I understand that you hate me right now.” She sighed and looked up at him with wide eyes. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

He looked down at her and saw her eyes fill with tears. He really didn’t want her to cry. He couldn’t stand it when girls cried. And no matter how mad he was with everything that she had done, she was still Tess, one of his best friends since high school. She was like family to him. He had been best man at her wedding. He didn’t agree with what she had done, but it didn’t change what she was to him. No matter what he said or the names he called her, she was still Tess. She was as much of a sister to him as Isabel.

“I just don’t understand what happened. I just don’t get why you left.” He admitted.

“Sometimes I don’t understand either. But, I know that I had to. I wasn’t happy.” She whispered. “I’m not sure I ever was.”

“That’s crazy. You two have been in love since high school.”

“This isn’t high school anymore.” She said and tears began to slide down her cheeks. “And I don’t think high school was what it seemed to be.”

“I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.” He said and willed her to not start crying.

“Neither do I.” She said shaking her head and then began to cry.

“Shit.” He muttered and without hesitating pulled her into his arms.

When they had gone into the house Alex had taken Kyle into the kitchen and Maria excused herself to go to the bathroom.

She sat on the edge of the bathtub and tried to control her breathing. She wasn’t exactly sure what had happened in the backyard. Her head was swarming. She remembered that there was lots of yelling and screaming. It was then that the voices she heard all sounded like the boyfriend she had fled from in New York. She had heard Billy’s voice screaming and it was all at her. She could feel her scars begin to itch and then it became hard to breathe. She had closed her eyes and then opened them to see Liz slap Kyle across the face. The sound of it pulsed through her body and her head had snapped back instinctively.

Then it was over and she was aware that she was in Roswell. She was in Isabel and Alex’s backyard and Liz was freaking out. So, she had pushed aside all other thoughts and went to go after her, but Max had stopped her. She didn’t know why she let him. She should be the one to go and comfort her best friend. But somewhere in the back of her mind she could still hear Billy’s voice.

It was gone now. She sat on the edge of the tub taking deep breaths and made sure that it was gone.

She stood up and was glad to see that her legs weren’t shaking. She needed to find Liz. She just hoped she could get out of the house without running into Michael. She could still hear his voice. She could hear him screaming at Tess and it made her skin crawl. She thought that perhaps she would never be able to look at him again without hearing him screaming.

Maria walked out of the bathroom and glanced around the corner. She looked toward the sliding glass door and paused when she saw Michael and Tess.

He was facing her holding Tess. He was rubbing circles on her back and she looked like she was shaking.

She watched the two of them for a moment. She didn’t know Michael very well, but she guessed that even if she had known him she never would have pictured him doing this. His eyes were closed and Maria couldn’t tell what emotions he was feeling at that moment. But she knew that he looked anything but angry.

Suddenly he opened his eyes and was looking through the door right at her. She froze for a moment. She thought that he would come barging through the door yelling at her for spying on him. Instead, she watched in semi-fear as he whispered something to Tess who nodded. He let her go and then walked in the house. She felt her stomach roll as he walked up to her.

“Do you want a ride home?”

She searched his eyes and felt her body relax. She nodded. “Thanks.”

* * * * *
Max walked back towards the house never feeling more like he had no control over his life.

He just wished he could start the whole day over. None of it made any sense. He didn’t understand why Tess had shown up with Kyle. He didn’t understand why Tess had left him for Kyle. He didn’t understand why Kyle had left Liz for Tess. He didn’t understand why Liz was so angry at him. He didn’t understand why she said she couldn’t look at him. He didn’t understand what he had done wrong. He just didn’t understand anything.

The confusion washed over any of the anger he had left.

He was still shaking his head in bewilderment as he approached the front lawn and Michael and Maria came out the front door.

“Where’s Liz?” Maria asked immediately.

“She took off.” He sighed pointing in the direction she had gone. “She’s really upset. She wouldn’t talk to me.”

“Are you okay?” Michael asked him.

“I don’t know.” He admitted. “I don’t think so. Where’s Tess?”

“She’s still inside. I’m taking Maria home.”

“Yeah, okay.” He said and then turned to Maria. “I’m really sorry you had to see all of that.”

She shook her head. “I’m sorry you had to see all of that too.”

He smiled weakly at her. “I’ll see you guys later.”

“Just don’t kill Kyle.” Michael warned as he and Maria walked away. “I’m a good lawyer, but I’ve never handled a murder case before.”

Max laughed softly and nodded. He walked up to the house and went in to find Tess.

* * * * *

“There she is.” Maria pointed out the window and Michael looked to see Liz walking up the street.

He sped the car up and then slowed down when he was beside her. He rolled down the window and honked the horn as Maria leaned over and called her name out his window. Liz ignored them and kept walking, so Michael slowed the car down into a slow crawl.

“C’mon Liz.” Michael called as patiently as he could while trying to keep his eyes on the road. Thankfully they were the only moving vehicle on the street. “Get in the car.”

“No.” She said firmly and began to walk faster.

Rolling his eyes, Michael pressed down on the gas to keep up with her. “Would you just get in the car and let me drive you home?”

She finally turned towards the car and Michael could see the tears running down her face. “I’m fine. I can walk home.”

Maria had noticed she was crying as well and leaned over Michael to yell out the window. “Liz, Honey. Please just get in the car.”

“Leave me alone.” Liz called back. “I don’t need anyone to drive me home. I don’t need anyone, okay?”

“Get in the fucking car, Liz.” Michael warned keeping the car at a pace to stay beside her. He wasn’t angry. He was frustrated. He had seen enough theatrics for one day.

“No.”

Maria looked at him concerned. “We have to do something. We can’t just leave her alone.”

“For fuck sake.” Michael groaned and stopped the car. He took off his seat belt and turned to Maria. “Stay here.”

Making sure there were no cars coming, he jogged across the street and stopped Liz. “Just get in the car and let me drive you home.”

Liz shook her head wiping tears off her cheeks. “Leave me alone Michael.”

Michael took a deep breath and decided to try a calmer approach. “Look, I know what happened back there was fucked up. No one expected it and I’m really sorry that it happened. Would you just let me take you home? You shouldn’t be out wandering the streets.”

“I’ll be fine.” She told him hastily. “Besides, it’s the middle of the afternoon.”

“It doesn’t matter. You’re upset.” He told her and then shrugged. “And Maria’s really worried about you and if I leave you out here she’ll have my balls.”

“That’s not my problem.” Liz said and then walked away.

Michael hesitated for a moment and then decided that he couldn’t just let her wander around crying. He ran up and took her by the arm. “Don’t make do this. Just get in the fucking car.”

“I said no, so leave me alone.” She glared at him and tried to pull away.

“That’s it.” He muttered. He’d had enough of women throwing tantrums for one day. “Just remember you made me do this.”

Before Liz could say anything, Michael grabbed her and threw her over his shoulder.

“What the fuck are you doing?” She yelled as he carried her back to the car. She tried to scramble free, but she was small and he held her without any difficulty.

He approached the car as Maria was jumping out. “Michael!”

“You told me to do something.” He told her simply and threw the back door open with one hand. He put Liz down and she glared at him. “Get in the car, Liz. Because I will throw you in there if I have to.”

She stared at him for a moment. “I hate you.” She said finally and then got into the back seat.

“No you don’t.” Michael smiled as he shut the door and got back behind the wheel.

* * * * *
Max walked into the kitchen to find Tess, Kyle and Alex talking quietly.

“We need to talk Tess.” He said immediately, staring at only her. He was afraid of what he might do if he looked in Kyle’s general direction. “Alone.”

She nodded quickly and Max looked to the floor as she whispered something to Kyle.

A moment later he heard Alex walking past him. “How about I give you a tour of the backyard, Kyle. I’m sure you didn’t get to see the pool while you were out there.”

Max kept his eyes down until he heard Alex and Kyle exit out the back door. He looked up and saw Tess walking towards him. “Don’t say anything. Sit down.”

She quickly complied and sat at the kitchen table looking up at him with a thousand emotions displayed across her face. It hit Max then that he had once been able to read her like an open book. Now, he had no idea what the hell was going on.

“What the fuck were you thinking coming here?” He demanded staring down at her.

“I don’t know.” She admitted shaking her head. “I really didn’t think you would be here. I even checked for your car.”

“I left it at home, but that doesn’t even matter. You thinking that I would not be here is not the point. You came anyways. Did you really think Isabel wouldn’t tell me? She may be your best friend, but she’s my sister.” He spat out trying to keep his voice down.

“I know that. I know that Isabel would have told you.” She sighed shaking her head. “You just don’t understand.”

“Then explain it to me.” He said roughly grabbing a chair to sit in front of her. “Because I am so confused right now, I don’t even know what to think.”

“Okay.” She said slowly and paused for a moment biting her lip. She always did that when she was nervous. “I admit that it wasn’t the smartest move to show up here a week after we broke up with my boyfriend.”

Max tried not to cringe at the word boyfriend. “Then, why would you do it?”

“I had to.” She insisted and Max looked at her expectantly. “It needed to be done as soon as possible. You already knew I was with someone and the longer I avoided you finding out who it was, the longer I’d have to stay away from Madison.”

“What does Madison have to do with it?” He asked, more confused than ever.

“She has everything to do with it. I don’t want her to think that I’ve abandoned her. It was so hard picking her up last weekend and taking her shopping. And I’m not saying that I regret leaving her with you. I still know it’s the best thing for her, but I want her in my life Max. I still want her to be a part of my life. And as long as my relationship with Kyle was kept a secret that could never happen. I had to do it before it was too late. Besides, you would have found out anyway. Roswell’s a small town. No one can mind their own fucking business.”

Max laughed bitterly. “So, you just decide to show up here?”

“Kyle and I decided it was best and that it had to be done.” She told him ignoring his laughter. “He tried to tell Liz the other night, but she wouldn’t let him. He hated keeping it a secret as much as I did. So, I thought I would come here and tell Isabel and Alex first.”

Max stood up, suddenly angry. “That’s fucking great Tess. Kyle goes to tell Liz and then you both come here to tell Isabel and Alex. Why am I the last one to know? I’m the guy you cheated on. Don’t you think I deserved to know?”

“Of course, you deserve to know.” She nodded her head, her voice shaking slightly. “I was going to tell you tonight.”

“Well, isn’t that thoughtful of you?” He said pacing the room, his voice raising. “I’m touched that I’m the last fucking person you wanted to tell.”

“No.” She said and he stopped to look at her as she began to cry. “I didn’t know how to tell you. I was scared. I just thought that once I told someone, it would be easier to tell you. I didn’t want to hurt you. You don’t understand how hard this is.”

“You’re the one who doesn’t know how hard this.” He yelled. “You’re not the one who was cheated on. You’re not the one that was left behind.”

“I’m sorry.” Tess whispered because her sobs were racking her body. “I didn’t know what else to do. I didn’t mean for it to be like this.”

“It’s too late for sorry.” He snapped. “It’s too late for anything.”

The two of them were silent then as the heard Isabel’s talking loudly to warn them that she and Madison were coming down the stairs.

* * * * *

“It’s going to be okay.” Maria repeated for the fifth time since Liz had been forced into the car.

“I’m such an idiot.” Liz replied throwing her head back on the seat. “I should have known.”

“Would you stop saying that?” Michael told her. “There’s no way you could have known.”

Maria nodded her head in agreement. “No one did.”

Suddenly a realization hit Liz and she sat up in shock. “No, you’re wrong. It was right there.”

“What are you talking about?” Michael asked looking at her in the mirror.

“That was why Tess apologized to me the other night.” Liz said shaking her head at her own stupidity. “I didn’t know what she was talking about. But, she was apologizing because she’s been screwing Kyle. And that was why he showed up last night and wanted to talk. I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out.”

“But, that’s ridiculous.” Maria shook her head as the car stopped in front of the Crashdown. “It makes sense now, but when it happened there was no reason for you to figure anything out. You had no idea.”

Liz didn’t reply. Maria was wrong. She had no idea.

* * * * *

“I want to go with you.”

Max watched as Madison, still in her bathing suit, stared up at Tess with pleading eyes. Kyle was already out at the car and Tess was trying to leave.

“Not this time, Honey. But I promise next weekend we can do something.” Tess said softly and kissed Madison on the forehead.

“But, I want to go with you. Now.” She insisted and wrapped her arms around her mother’s neck.

“Madison.” Max called and she turned to look up at him. “Go grab your bag and let Mom and me talk. Okay?”

Isabel grabbed Madison’s hand and left him standing with Tess at the front door.

“Maybe you should take her.” He said putting aside his anger because Madison missed her mother terribly.

“It’s not a good idea.” She replied shaking her head. “I want her to get to know Kyle before she spends a night with us. If she comes tonight, she’ll only end up being confused and then beg me to take her back home to you.”

“But, I thought this was what you wanted.” He insisted frustrated. “You wanted her to know about Kyle, so you could see her. I thought this was so you could be a part of her life?”

“It is. But, I don’t want to rush it. She’s really confused right now. It’s been a rough day for her and if she comes with me and sees me with Kyle, it’ll only be worse. I don’t want her to hate me, Max.”

Before he could say anything, Madison ran back with her bag. “I’m ready Mom.”

“Madison.” Tess said kneeling down in front of her. “You can’t come with me this time. You’re going to go home with Daddy.”

“I don’t want to.” She replied shaking her head. “I want to be with you.”

Max stood watching and felt the tears burn at the back of his eyes.

“I promise that we can do something soon, but you’re going home with Daddy.” Tess said hugging her and kissing her. “I love you.”

“But, I don’t want to stay with him!” Madison screamed as Tess stood up. “He yelled at you. Everyone yelled at you, but I didn’t. Please, take me with you.”

“I can’t.” Tess shook her head and opened the door. “It’s going to be okay. I love you.”

With that, she closed the door and left. Max was about to walk over to Madison when she turned to him with tears streaming down her face.

“I hate you!” She screamed and ran past him up the stairs.

He swallowed the lump in his throat and turned to see Isabel standing in the doorway leading to the kitchen.

“She doesn’t mean it.” She told him smiling softly. “She’s just upset.”

“I know.” He said honestly. He knew that Madison was having a hard time. But, even though he knew she didn’t mean it, it still hurt more than anything else in the world.

* * * * *

“I just can’t believe it was her.” Liz muttered from where she was pacing in her living room.

Michael had dropped them off twenty minutes ago and Liz had tried to remain calm. But, the more she thought about it, the more the reality slammed into her. She couldn’t control her emotions. She had to talk about it. It was all bottled up inside ready to explode out of her.

“Liz.” Maria said softly from where she was perched on the couch. “I don’t mean to offend you or anything, but why are you so mad at Tess? I’ll never understand why girls are more mad at the women their boyfriends cheat with than the men themselves. You’ve been raving about her the whole time, but Kyle played a role too.”

“You just don’t understand.” Liz shook her head.

“Then explain it to me.” Maria insisted. “Because if it was me, I’d sure as hell be plotting revenge against Kyle.”

Liz stopped pacing and stared at her best friend. Maria was looking up at her with concern in her eyes. Maria was her best friend, but she had no idea. No one did. If Liz didn’t tell her now, she never would.

“Kyle is not the first guy.” She said suddenly before she could change her mind.

“Okay.” Maria said slowly shaking her head. “I’m not following. Kyle’s not the first guy that what?”

Liz took a deep breath. “He’s not the first guy that I loved that is with Tess instead of with me.”

“Who was the first?” Maria asked quietly, but Liz could see in her eyes that she already knew the answer.

There was no going back now. Even though Maria already knew, Liz had to say it out loud. She had to tell someone the secret she had been holding for more years that she cares to remember.

“Max.”

Surprisingly, it felt really good to finally tell someone. To finally get it out in the open. Liz smiled and then immediately began to cry.

Hello all you beautiful and wonderful people. I'm afraid that I come baring bad news, but first I must correct something.

I would like to thank you all for the well wishes concerning my father and his surgery. I just want to say that at the time I wrote that, I was extremely tired and just plain worn-out and made it sound worse than it was. I realize now that it seemed as if he were having open-heart surgery or something of the kind. It was, in fact, only kidney stones. But, he did have to have the operation three times and it was a very unsettling experience for the both of us. But, it was non-life threatening and I feel that I should clarify that. However, I appreciate all your prayers and well wishes. You guys are so wonderful. Which makes this next part so horrible. The bad news...

I have no new part for you. I have been frantically trying to finish it up and just have not had the time. Between trips to the hospital and just finding out that we will be moving in the near future, things have been very hectic around here. And there is more...On Friday, I am leaving for vacation for three weeks and will have no internet access. Therefore, there will be no new part until the end of July.

I am really sorry and tried so hard to finish the next part up in time before I left, unfortunately that hasn't happened. I am truly truly sorry.

I will however be working on the fic while I am away and hopefully get ahead of myself so you will not have to wait so long ever again for a new part. There is just no way for me to post it. It's impossible.

I hope you all understand. And I hope that you all will be here when I get back. I realize that this is a lot to ask since you guys have been so patient. I so don't deserve you guys.

Again, I am sorry. I will be back in a couple of weeks. I hope you all are having a wonderful summer and I can't wait to get back and get back on track with this fic.

Wow. Longest Author's Note ever, huh? *lol* If you actually took the time to read this entire thing, I am even more indebted to you ;)

p.s. I saw that this fic along with Madison made it into the voting for the awards. A big thank you from the bottom of my heart goes out to all who nominated. Seriously, you guys are the best. Love ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
