Hey guys,
I'm back with a short up-date.
Please be patient with me. This one is short because
the next is kind of long. I'm a stickler for detail so I have to
'set the scene' so to speak.

Thankx!!!...

~C~ and April :Fade-color
Fehrs :Fade-color
Bre :Fade-color
LizZiEsTaR :Fade-color new name - welcome and thank you. There is a reunion coming soon between the girls.
Thankx ever so much for the feedback. I'm starting to crave it!!

Ok, like I said, this part is kind of short, but I will have the next part posted in a couple of days. You all know the drill -
This is Beth's story that Dee borrowed for a little while.....

“Thank God…they are still breathing.”
“What the hell is he?”
“I don’t know, but right now all I see is that he is wonderful. She loves him so it really doesn’t matter, does it? He had to save her life because of you. He’s put himself in jeopardy for her. That’s love. That’s honor Greg. Show some honor and do the right thing.”
“You know nothing about this.”
“I know more than you think. I’m Michael’s ex-wife. Like you, I came here on a mission. Unlike you, my mission was to forgive and move on. Believe me when I say that I know what you felt being married to Maria. I didn’t understand it before. Greg, seeing them together – how can you deny what’s in front of your eyes? Maria was dieing and she used what she thought was her last breath to tell Michael that she loves him. If that’s not love, I don’t know what it is. You shouldn’t interfere with the natural balance. Let them have some peace. They have been apart for too long.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“Yes Greg, you do.”
“I’ve never had to second guess myself. I’m torn Rita, because I don’t care for change. I’m not blind. I do see how much they love each other, but that doesn’t mean that I have to like it.”
“No you don’t, but we must sometimes learn to accept the things that we can’t change. Closing this door will surely open another for you. I don’t know what you search for in life, but whatever it is, I hope you find it. I hope that this time, you will be happy.”
“Will you help me Rita? Please?”
“Yes. Call me crazy, but I know that you are sincere. I bet you’ve never had to ask for help in your life. Help me get Michael and Maria into bed. I’m getting this feeling of déjà vu, and I feel that they need to rest.”

Across town, Max and Isabelle were on the phone…

“I don’t understand…it was like someone tapped into our powers to help heal. Max…am I crazy or was the essence Michael’s? Max, can he heal now?”
“You’re not crazy, it was definitely Michael. If he can heal, I know nothing about it. Something happened Isabelle, something bad. I feel it.”
“What ever happened, he was able to channel his energy and pull from us. I didn’t know that we could do that. How do we do that?”
“I honestly don’t know.”
“I could feel what he was feeling. He was so scared Max. I was immobile because the force was so powerful, but I was able to cry. I was sobbing like a baby because he was hurting so much. Where is Michael?”
“I wasn’t supposed to tell you or the others, but Michael is here at the Hyatt hotel. He got hurt a few days ago while on his motorcycle. The doctor there couldn’t do anything of course so Maria flew him here…
“Maria DeLuca? She’s here? That explains the strong emotions.”
“Maria was to be your surprise in the morning, but I think you and I should go over there right away.”
“Pick me up. I’m throwing on some jeans right now.”
“I’m on my way.”

Back at the hotel…

Rita helped Greg put Michael and Maria in the bed. They didn’t stir. They were in a deep sleep. Rita decided to wait there for a while. She felt it her duty to watch them. Greg was on the couch in the main room. She lay on the chaise lounge in the room that they occupied. She found it fascinating that they gravitated toward each other – even in deep sleep. They were resting comfortably in each others arms. She had never seen Michael so peaceful. She knew without doubt that Maria brought out the best in him.
Her imagination ran rampant. She had seen Michael do an incredible thing and she wasn’t afraid. She now knew part of the secret that he kept hidden from her but more importantly, she knew why. She hoped that he would tell her the rest when he awakened. Incredible…that’s what it
was – simply incredible.

Rita’s thinking: Maria knows. They share the secret and that’s one of the many reasons that they are so close. But Michael said something…
“No time to call Max…I can’t heal…
Wow. Michael and Max. Isabelle is their sister. Could it be that they are all alike?
There was always something different about his touch, his kiss…why didn’t I think of this before? Sex with him was sensational. It was so good that I can’t get mad that he was probably thinking of Maria. I can only dream of what it would have been like to make love with him if he was actually in love with me. Damn…Maria is one lucky woman. They are both lucky to know love like this.
Greg is lucky that he wasn’t killed. Michael’s power is probably immeasurable. I would hate to be on the receiving end of his fury.

Liz stopped Max on his way out. After coaxing him he told her what happened. She insisted on following. She felt she needed to be there for Maria because Amy was out of town.
The drive to the Hyatt was wrought-up with inquiry. Max and Iz were still questioning what happened, how and why. This was something new, and though scared at first, they were now excited.

Max used his key to let them into the room. They first approached a sleeping man on the couch. Rita heard the outer door open and close. She knew instinctively that it was Max. She was glad that he had come. She stepped out to greet him and was happy to see Liz and Iz there too. After salutations and hugs between the women they rushed to Michael and Maria’s side. They were standing around the bed looking them over.

Rita – “I don’t quite know what happened, but I had the feeling that you would come. Please…if I understand anything, it’s your need for discretion. I love Michael and even though we aren’t together, I still consider him and all of you my family. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt him or you. I hope you know that. It’s unfortunate that Greg was witness to what happened also. I’m afraid that I don’t know what he might say or do.”
Iz – “That’s Greg Malone?”
Rita – “Yes.”
Max – “Rita, what happened?”
Rita – “Well…some force of nature wanted us all to meet because by some fluke, that’s exactly what happened. Maria and I and Michael and Greg simultaneously. While Maria and I had a heart to heart at Celeste’s diner Michael and Greg were engaged in conversation across the way at the Café. Maria came back here to tell Greg that she wants a divorce. If Michael and I hadn’t followed…
Liz – “Please Rita…
Rita – “We heard arguing and when we walked into the room, Maria was slipping from Greg’s grasp on her arms. She fell face first into the coffee table. Oh gosh, there was so much blood. Greg reached for her and Michael held up his hand. There was a flash of light that sent Greg into the far wall. Michael put his hands on Maria. I swear to you that she was dieing in his arms. She was literally bleeding to death. She couldn’t see him or feel him and through labored breathing, she was able to tell him that she was cold. Michael was a wreck – understandably. She started choking on her blood. Michael said that there was no time to call you Max and that he couldn’t heal. Then he said something that I will never forget. He said, “I have to try for you because if you die, I die too.” (Rita was unaware of the tears in her eyes)
The room got warm and Michael and Maria started to glow. I stood in shock and watched as the blood just…dissipated. (All the women were crying)
I’ve never seen anything so incredible and so beautiful in my life. After the glow they just collapsed. Greg helped me to put them in bed. They’ve been asleep ever since.
I perched on the chaise lounge to watch them. Nothing else has happened out of the ordinary. As soon as they were settled, they just sort of fell into one another – like they crave the others presence.”

Max stood over the sleeping pair. He reached out and held his hands over Maria’s face and gently touched her to see if she was ok. As soon as his skin made contact with Maria’s, Michael stirred and opened his eyes.

“Maxwell? Is she…is she ok?” (He couldn’t contain the sob that escaped his lips and he was visibly upset) Max please…
“Michael, she’s fine. She’s just sleeping…
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I promise. You did it Michael. You healed her.”
“But how? I didn’t even know that I could. I just had to try…I couldn’t let her die.”
Isabelle – “Hey Michael.” (weak smile through her tears)
“Iz…Liz…(they approached him and group hugged) Maria will be glad to see you both. She was really excited about tomorrow – well, (looking at his watch) today.”
Liz – “We wouldn’t be anywhere else. Uhm, her mother is out of town for a conference. Do you think I should try to contact her?”
“I don’t think so. Ultimately it will be Maria’s decision, but she will be here when her mom returns.”
Liz and Iz- “Really?”
“Yes, Ria is coming home.”
“Iz – “Hey…no more tears big brother. She’s fine now, thanks to you.”
“I know that logically, but my heart…I was so scared and I don’t know what I did, but I felt you. Both of you. It was like you were here with me.”
Max – “We were.”
“What?”
Max – “In ways unknown to us, you somehow tapped into our powers and pulled energy from us. We could feel you healing Maria. We could feel your essence.”
“I don’t know what I did or how, but thank you both for letting me in. If I had lost her you would be burying us both.”

Greg had awakened. He could hear murmurs from the other room, but he couldn’t make out what was being said. He wanted to check to see if Majandra was ok but he didn’t think he would receive a warm welcome. Especially from Michael.

Gregs thinking:
She wants a divorce. What the hell am I supposed to do. I can’t give her up - not to Guerin. She doesn’t want to be with me. I don’t want to hurt her anymore than I already have. Especially after what happened tonight. She could have died because of me. She would have died if not for HIM.
HE is whom she loves. HE is whom she has always longed for. HE is who was able to save her after I…oh God, this could have ended so badly. She is so small and there was so much blood…I need to get out of here.

Max and Michael wanted talk so they decided to go into the kitchen for drinks. Rita lay back down on the chaise and Liz and Isabelle got in bed on either side of Maria. Their sister was back. They hadn’t seen her in so long that they hoped things wouldn’t be awkward when she awakened. But they were happy that she was home.

The guys entered the room to see a wide eyed Greg sitting on the couch…

Greg – “I didn’t mean to…please, how is Majandra?”
“Maria will be fine.” (Michael’s voice was controlled and low)
“Don’t look at me like that Guerin. I didn’t mean to…
“But you did and she almost died. Save your excuses. Why are you still here?”
“I’m here because I need to apologize to her and I need to know that she is ok.”
“You need to stay away from her.”
“Don’t you dare get indignant with me. You would be wise to remember that your happiness is incumbent on my impending divorce – which hasn’t happened yet and won’t happen until I decide to sign.”
“You’d do that to her after tonight? You really are a bastard Greg.”
“What are you Guerin? I’ve seen the things that you can do and I’m pretty sure that there is a lot more. Your very existence is questionable to say the least. In my wildest dreams I would never have imagined being witness to what you did. A word of warning, if I feel threatened…
“You’ll what? Tell? Who? Better yet, who do you think will believe you?”
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“I think you are, but you have no need to fear me. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have. Now here is a warning for you – don’t you ever threaten me again.”
“Is it permissible for me to ask if Majandra is ok?” Does she need to be taken to the hospital?”
“Greg, right?” Max asked
“Yes.”
“Maria is fine. I’m Max by the way and I’m the family doctor.”
“I don’t suppose I could see your credentials…

Max started to reach into his pocket and Greg held up his hand in protest…

“There is no need. Since you obviously have the ability to heal, among other things, why didn’t you heal yourself?”
“I don’t feel that I have to answer your questions, but it doesn’t work that way.”
“Well, you seem to be ok now.”
“Yeah I do, don’t I? (Michael went into the kitchen to get a drink) You still here Malone?”
“I’m going…but let Majandra know that I need to discuss some things with her regarding our earlier conversation. I will be in my suite and Guerin, I need to talk to her before I leave.”
“That will be Maria’s call, Malone. She is a grown woman who makes her own decisions, but I will pass that message along.”
“Max.” (he nodded his goodbye)
“Greg.”
“Guerin.” (Michael threw a dismissing wave his way)

Greg left the suite and the guys breathed a sigh of relief.

The next chapter

...“Yeah I do, don’t I?

The next day:

The girls had been asleep for some time when the guys finally decided that they were talked out. Michael got in his bed since Liz and Iz were sharing with Maria. Max lay where he was on the couch. Slumber was swift.

At roughly 11:30 a.m. the room was dark and quiet and everyone was still sleeping with the exception of Maria. She had awakened sandwiched between Liz and Iz. She was groggy and thought she was dreaming but once she was fully awake, she knew that she was not. Rita was on the chaise lounge. When she carefully got out of bed so she wouldn’t wake the others and left the room, she saw Max on the couch. She felt euphoric that they had come to support her…but where was Michael? She felt like a part of her was missing when she woke and he wasn’t beside her. On the other side of the suite, Michael was in his bed sleeping not so soundly. He was mumbling and moving around like he was dreaming. She walked over to him and in a gesture that was as familiar as her face, she brushed the hair from his forehead. He stilled instantly at her touch and opened his eyes.

No words were exchanged. He pulled her into his arms and they held each other while they cried silently in understanding.

After the tears subsided, he took her lips in a kiss that spoke of desperation, want and longing.

They quickly fell into a shared vision:

Maria and Michael in a private wedding ceremony on a beach with close friends and family looking on in the distance…

Michael and Maria making passionate love in front of the fireplace during a storm at the home in Vermont…

Maria speaking at a press conference to close the chapter on Majandra…

Maria putting the finishing touches on her personal album in LA…

Maria getting sick and Michael patiently and carefully caring for her…

Michael pleading with her and finally taking her to the doctor…

Shared joy at discovering they were having a baby…

Three months pregnant and the newly released album went Gold - one week later, Platinum…

At six months pregnant, Maria collapses. The pregnancy is high risk and she is restricted to moderate walking and bed rest…

Michael cares for her while she writes songs and Michael paints…

Their friends take turns sitting with her to keep her entertained…

Maria’s in labor, the baby is in distress and she is given a cesarean section. When she wakes, she is surrounded by friends and family. She weeps silently when she sees her Mom and Michael holding their twins.

Maria - in pain from the cesarean incision and Michael healing her when they were home

They pull away from each other. They didn’t know what to say so they just looked into each others eyes…

"That gets more incredible every time it happens. The visions seem to be premonitory…

"Maria, I hope that they are premonitions because baby, nothing would make me happier. If it were up to me you would never be in any pain."

"Michael…

"Yeah? Hey…are you ok?"

"No. I just got a glimpse of what I want my life to be - with you and our babies. We had twins "Michael. We should have had that life long ago. We could have if I hadn’t been so…

"No Maria, please don’t do that. Obviously, the past had to happen to bring us here. I’ve missed you like crazy but I don’t regret it for one minute. I love you. That’s as true today as it was eleven years ago but more. I love you more. I will never stop. You can’t know what it did to me to hold you dieing in my arms. I was dieing too."

"I know how I felt when I thought I was leaving you, then you saved me. You healed me Michael. (she placed her palms on his face) How do I thank you for that?"

"You don’t. Just love me. That’s all I want. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. That’s all I need. You are all I need."

"I do love you Michael, with my whole heart. You know that without me having to say it. (she kissed him softly) Now Mr. Guerin, are there any other new developments that I don’t know about? When did you learn that you can heal?"

"I don’t know what to say to you other than I didn’t know that I could. You wanna know something? I’ve always been afraid of my abilities because I am rogue…I’m just gonna be honest about it. I tend to get too emotional and blow things up - not so much anymore. (they both laughed) This time though - the time that counted. The time that my heart was on the line, I was able to do the one thing that I’ve always wished I could. The fact that I was able to do it for you makes it all the more special. I want to be with you. I don’t want to waste another minute Maria. Tell me how to help so we can put the past in the past and move on"

"All we can do now is wait sweety. The lawyers have control. They drafted the paperwork. I’m flying to New York to sign in a couple of days, after that, Greg gets served and hopefully he signs."

"Are you ok for money? Because I have some and you can have it all…

"I’m fine Michael." (she started to giggle)

"Did I miss something?"

"No, I’m sorry…Greg threatened to cut me off financially, but the joke will be on him if he does."

"How?"

"Ok, when I first started my gig as Majandra, Greg took care of all the expenses - I mean everything. So about two years into it I was fed up with his ‘allowance’ so to speak. I wanted my own money to spend as I chose. So I started looking into the inner workings of the business. The accountant and I became really good friends. I did a favor for her and she in turn did one for me. A big one"

"What did she do Maria?"

"She set up my own personal accounts over seas. Any moneys that are made from sales and touring or whatever, a third of it goes into my personal accounts before Greg sees any of it. That’s not including my stipend. Greg chose the amount for that and I’m sure that he wondered why I never complained that it wasn’t enough, but I didn’t care because I have everything that I need and then some. Michael, I have enough money that even if I don’t sell another record, there is enough in the accounts that I can live off the interest for the rest of my life - unless I need to buy something extreme."

"Greg didn’t figure that you’d be that smart."

"No, he didn’t, lucky for me. I’m glad that you are painting again. Is it pretty lucrative?"

"Yeah, but I would do it for nothing. My last painting sold for about $30,000. That's normally the going price, but depending on who it is and what they want - let's just say that I've sold a few for $60,000"
"Wow Michael, that’s great."

"I guess. The money just sits in the bank. When I paint, it’s not about the money. It never has been. Painting is the way that I deal. I can lose myself in it so completely that I don’t have to feel. I’m starting to suspect that the reverse is also true because since I laid eyes on you, I have the urge to paint. You are once again a part of my life and I’m feeling things that I haven’t felt in years. I want so much to lay what I’m feeling out on canvas. Let me paint you."

Maria’s Thinking: Only Michael can make ‘Let me paint you’ sound so damned sexy…

(breathless and barely audible) "Ok."

(he smiled the grandest smile) "Are you blushing? You are, aren’t you? (another smile) One would assume that I asked you to pose nude…humm…(he quirked an eyebrow) If I asked you to take off…

"Watch it Mr. (she smiled) Don’t you remember what I look like unclothed? The last vision that we shared - you know… of the luscious tryst in front of the fireplace, it was so detailed that I think I memorized every detail of every part of you. Not that I forgot understand, but your body is more defined. (Maria’s thinking: in the best way) Looking at you now, eleven years ago seems like yesterday. You are still ruggedly handsome and by far the most sensationally sexy man that I have ever laid eyes on. Everything about you, from your mysteriously enticing eyes, to your deliciously osculate lips and the way only you can moan my name…

"You little vixen. My heart rate just accelerated. If you keep talking like that and looking at me like that we may have to re-enact that delicious tryst right here."

"Looking at you like what?"

"Like you’ve mentally undressed me."

"I have."

(he clears his throat) Uhm,…I’m hungry. Let’s see if the others are ready to wake so we can get some food…Ria? What’s that look About? You look terrified."

"I think I am…Michael, I’ve been away for so long with very little contact. I’m afraid of the way they will receive me."

"Do you love them Maria?"

"Of course I do. They are my family."

"If they didn’t love you, do you think they would be here?"

"Maybe they are here for you…

"Now you are making excuses. Listen, Iz is my sister. We bicker constantly, and honestly Maria, when have you ever known me to get along with Parker? Over the years she’s gotten as bad as Iz with her mother hen techniques. It is my own personal hell - a two for one deal. One unique family with two whining women who get on my nerves. Oh no…

"What?"

"I just had a gruesome thought."

"What Michael?"

"Now, we add you and your instant bond with Rita to the mix…I think I’m doomed."

In the other bedroom, the girls were waking one after the other. When everyone was fully roused, realizing that Maria wasn’t in the room they all knew that she had gone to seek out Michael. They spoke of how special the relationship between the two is and how it makes them all believe in love in the purest form. Because if Michael and Maria’s love could sustain time - two seemingly complete polar opposites - then that gave them all hope. They all had first hand knowledge of how closed off Michael could be - and usually was when it came to everything and everyone except Maria Deluca. She was the only person who saw through the stone wall façade, truly connected with him and got under his skin. Once she did, she was there for life.

Liz knew that she had it with Max. She still got excited when he looked into her eyes and after having two children with the man she loved with one on the way, she knew that they would be together forever. Isabelle felt that even though she loves Jesse, she was still working towards it. She didn’t want to voice her sorrow at knowing that she would have had it with Alex. She still missed him greatly and his love was unconditional. She knew without doubt that Jesse loves her, and it was good but - different. She thanked the powers that be every day for giving her a second chance at love. Rita just wanted a great guy (similar to Michael) who would love her. He didn’t have to be rich or successful. She just wanted someone who would treat her well and give her several babies.

Rita excused herself. She told Liz and Iz that she knew they needed time to reconnect with Maria and she didn’t want to intrude. They tried to assure her that her presence wasn’t an intrusion, but she wouldn’t hear it. Rita hugged them and left the room while they took turns freshening up. She passed a sleeping Max and across the way Michael’s bedroom door was open. She knocked and was invited in…

"Good morning - I think…

"Yeah, it’s almost noon. Have a seat. Maria’s freshening up. She’ll be out in a minute. Are the girls awake?"

"Yes. They are freshening up too."

"Good, because we want to go out for something to eat. You are welcome to join us."

"No thank you Michael. This is your time. Maria and the girls have some catching up to do (Maria is coming out of the bathroom) and this is time for your family to bond."

"You are family too." Maria said in a matter of certainty.

"Thank you Maria. I appreciate that but…

"Listen Rita, I mean it. The things that you’ve been through and seen…Michael and I feel responsible. I know that you have many questions and we can take the time to answer some of them for you as a group."

"Maria, you and Michael are not directly or indirectly responsible for…life, and yes, I do have questions but they can wait. Go now and be together. Reconnect. I’ll be here when you return. (they embraced) I mean this when I say I am happy to have met you."

Me too Rita and please remember that you are part of this family too. Always remember that."

"Thank you. I will."

They embraced again and Michael stepped over to kiss her goodbye

"Be careful around Malone. Would it be too forward of me to offer to pay for another room for you?"

"Yes Michael. (she giggled) Not only is it a waste of money, but it’s completely unnecessary because I have one that’s paid for and after Maria sings tonight, I’m leaving for home."

"Hey, I have an idea. Just hear me out Rita. Is there any reason that you must be home right away?"

"Well…I have no pressing issues until next week…

"Please consider this. I would love it if you would come stay with me at my moms for a few days. I want to introduce you to her. ("Maria…(Michael called her name but she didn’t hear him) (She started getting excited) Maybe you and the girls can fly with me to New York to sign my divorce papers, then we can go shopping and see some sights! After that I promise to fly you home. I wonder if Liz can fly…

"Maria…(a little louder)

"Humm? Did you say something Michael?"

"Your mom isn’t home. She’s out of town for a convention."

"Oh….well, find out where, ok? I want to see her."

"Ok baby. I’ll do that for you."

"Rita, what do you think? This can be a mini vacation for you."

"I will think seriously about it and let you know for sure tonight. Ok?"
"Ok. Hey, I will call you on your cell when we get back."

"Ok. That would be great. I’m going to shower and order room service. I will see you all later."

Maria walked her to the door. They shared another quick hug and Rita hurried down the hall. Maria closed the door and then hesitated to turn. She could feel the presence of Liz and Isabelle and she needed a few seconds to collect her thoughts.

Michael - sensing her trepidation, walked over to her. She put her hand in his and he kissed her quickly on the lips and whispered in her ear, "Don’t worry baby. They love you. I love you."

Isabelle was the first to speak…

"Maria Deluca…could you get your scrawny ass over here please? We have waited long enough to see you!"

They all started laughing and Maria hurried across the room into their welcomed embrace. Max woke to three emotional women standing over him in an inseparable embrace, laughing and sobbing…

"We missed you so much!!"

"I missed you too Liz, all of you - so much!! Isabelle, my ass is not scrawny!!"

Michael - "She's right Iz, she has a very nice ass."

The group - "Michael!!"

Michael -(laughing) "Hey, I had to break the monotony."

Iz - "You looked terrified standing over there. Now seriously Maria, you could have called…you should have…

"I know Isabelle. I feel awful, but please let me try to explain…

They kicked Max off the couch and sat with Maria sandwiched in between them - each holding one of her hands. She wouldn’t make eye contact with either of them as she told them of the sordid and painful details of her eleven year lonely existence and how ashamed she was to call them after days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, and months turned to years…

…After so much time had passed, I was afraid that you all had disowned me and would reject me. That hurt me more than anything because it was my own fault, but you were always right here in my heart. When I was touring, before starting my show - every time - I wouldn’t start until I said:

‘Much love to my Pod Squad, and Alex - I miss you’.

People would often ask who the Pod Squad was, to which I always replied, "My family".

I would call my mom as often as I could because after talking to her I would get really depressed. It was very hard to hear her voice because I missed everybody so much and she was like a direct link. She would tell me about your lives. She kept me abreast of the basics, but it’s interesting that she never mentioned Michael’s marriage."

"That’s because she doesn’t know Maria. We don’t see her very often. I keep in contact with her by phone. Honestly, I was afraid to mention anything about Michael to her. She was missing you so much and I didn’t want to put more on her mind. I’m sure that she would have loved Rita, but to see her with the man that you love so much - I …I just couldn’t do that to her."

Maria - "I appreciate that."

Michael - "I do too Liz. Thank you."

Isabelle - (attempting to lighten the mood) "What is more synonymous than you two? Your names - everything. Michael Maria, Maria Michael. I swear that your names were meant to be said together, no matter in what order. We have living proof that you were meant to be together. Explain to us how you found each other. Was there some secret communication going on?"

"If there were, I would have been home a long time ago. As far as I can tell, It was fate, or a miracle, or destiny, or kismet. Pick one or take all of the above."

Max sat beside Liz and Michael stood behind Maria and started a slow massage on her shoulders while she told the incredible story of how she and Michael met again after all those years apart. Maria was just getting to the point of the first shared vision when Iz got a phone call on her cell. She asked them to wait while she took the call in the other room. As soon as she vacated the couch, Michael took his place beside Maria...

"Do you still have them?"

"Have what baby?"

She turned and opened her shirt to Michael discreetly...

"I don't know. I did a little molecular altering for Greg's benefit, remember? I meant to put things as they were but...

"Yeah, I know. Let's take a look...

Michael opened his shirt and everything was as it was prior to his talk with Greg. All Maria's strategically placed 'dream passion marks' were where they should be.

Maria - "Iz is gonna get a kick out of this."

Liz - "Out of what? Let me see."

Maria - "I promise that everything will be revealed if Iz would hurry."

She chose that moment to reappear...

Iz - "That was Jesse. He says hello and that he can't wait to see you. So, what did I miss?" (Taking a seat next to Michael after they all shifted down to make room for her)

Liz - "Shared visions - ok Maria, you have the floor."

Maria quickly told them about the first shared vision. When she got to the second, she took her time to explain (almost) every detail...

"The visions are so real that we literally feel - in the real world - everything that we feel in the dream world. The only difference in the second and the first is we have souvenirs from the second."

They opened their shirts to four curious eyes and two that were already knowledgeable of the situation, to reveal their dream hickies...

Liz - "Oh my...

Iz - "Oh my, my...

"Ladies, I am tellin you that I felt Michael place each one on my body and if I didn't know that it was a dream, I would swear on my voice that I actually physically placed each and every one all over Michael’s body. I felt it all, down to the phenomenal orgas...well, that's a little too much information, but after we woke, I had to go to the bathroom to compose myself. I was quite literally and completely satiated and trembling. I could smell Michael all over me."

Michael just smiled...

Iz - "You woke fully clothed?"

"Yes. All three times."

Max - "Three? It happened again?"

Michael - "Yes, this morning."

Liz - "Wow..

Maria - "I'll say. And each time, they get more intense and detailed and we feel every little thing. The big things too...

Michael - "Did you feel the birth?" (Michael and Maria started to hold their own conversation - oblivious to the others)

"No, but maybe that's because in the vision I had a cesarean and I was knocked out. But I definitely felt the nausea, fatigue and the labor pains...Oh! oh! and those damned staples after I woke up. Thank you in advance, by the way, for your wonderful healing hands after we leave the hospital." (she kissed him softly)

"No problem. You know that if it were up to me, you would never be in pain. I would take it all for you."

"I know you would. This is so incredible. If the visions really are premonitory...

Liz - "You think these are visions of the future?"

"Yes, we do. And even if they are not, I can hope. I have the man of my dreams back in my life. I never dreamed that I would have this chance again. If the dreams don't come true, we can create our own destiny. We will create our own destiny."

Michael - "I believe that it’s been pre-established. All we have to do now is get you divorced."

Max – "If that pompous individuals attitude is any indication, the divorce may take longer than you think. Are your lawyers pretty good?"

"They came highly recommended by a friend who has been helping me with my solo project. I think I’ll be ok."

Iz – "If things don’t work out, please consider contacting Jesse."

"Thank you Iz, I will remember that. I just want this to be over. I would rather not wait to be with Michael – completely – but I must. (she turned to him) I hope you understand Michael. I love you,

but I have to come to you with a clean slate. It’s not fair to you otherwise."

"I understand that you are doing what you have to do. I have waited for you for eleven years, so I believe that this is something that I can do. I love you. I have always loved you. Anything or anyone worth having is worth waiting for. Maria, I will be here when you are ready. I remember saying to you once, ‘I will wait until you come to me of your own free will. Just walk up to me and say, Michael, I’m yours’ Do you remember that?"

"Yes, I do. I’m going to do everything in my power to make it happen as soon as possible."

"I know you will, but baby, in the meantime, how am I supposed to keep my hands off you?"

(she smiled at him) "I will meet you often on the dream plane."

"We have to figure out how to get there when we want to."

(she licked her lips nervously) "Right now would be really good…

Michael and Maria gravitated towards each other almost involuntarily as the others looked at them curiously. They could feel the temperature changing in the room. It was definitely getting warmer. Michael and Maria seemed to be in a trance and their breathing was becoming erratic. Michael lay back on the couch and Maria joined him with her face on his chest. Their eyes closed as he cradled her in his arms…

Iz – "Uhm, hello…we are still in the room…

Max – "I don’t think they can hear you Iz. I think it’s one of their shared visions."

Liz – "What should we do?"

Max – "I guess we just let it happen."

The vision came quickly and there was nothing unpretentious about it. It was all about Michael and Maria’s mutual attraction and sensual indulgence.

They were in familiar surroundings. It took them a moment to realize exactly where they were.

It hit them suddenly that they were in the desert in Michael’s favorite place in a tent that had a clear top so they could see the stars. They had just finished a midnight picnic by candlelight – which they hardly ate because they couldn’t keep their lips apart between nibbles. They were slowly losing items of clothing as the dual seduction became furious with sensual caresses and kisses so fervent that they were breathless…

‘Don’t tease me Michael, I need you. Make love to me now’

‘Anything for you baby. Always…

Michael and Maria made love on the dream plane while the others stood curious and intrigued. Every now and then they would hear an impassioned moan, but the two people on the couch were hardly moving.

The room was hot and no one was sure how long they should wait so Max turned on the air conditioning. He wasn’t sure if he should try to wake them. He was afraid that he could somehow be pulled in and he was embarrassed about what he might see.

After what seemed like hours but in reality was only about thirty minutes, the woke with sharp intakes of breath to a inquisitive and aroused audience…

Unable to contain her emotions, Maria starts to cry…

"What is it Ria? Please look at me baby. (he gently placed his palms on either side of her face and used his thumbs to wipe her tears) What is it?"

"I don’t think I can wait Michael. It borders on criminal that you are so close and I can’t act on my feelings for you. It’s not fair. It’s my fault and this is my punishment."

"Maria, don’t do that. The things that we went through made us stronger. I promise you that I am not going anywhere. Do you hear me?"

"Yes Michael, but it hurts. It hurts so much."

He put his arms around her and let her cry until she was spent.

"It’s gonna be ok, I promise. I will always be right by your side. There is no where else that I want to be. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. Think about this sweety, while you are waiting, I am waiting too. We will wait together for as long as it takes."

"Please don’t leave me Michael. I will die if you leave me."

(he felt his heart breaking) "Maria, do you trust me?’

"Yes."

"No, you don’t because if you did you would believe me when I say that I love you and my place is beside you. I am not now, or ever going to leave you again."

"I do believe you Michael, I’m just really emotional and I’m being silly."

"I understand baby, and I am sorry that there is nothing that I can do to help you and make this go away. Together, we have to be patient. I’m not giving up on my second chance with you."

"I love you."

"I love you more."

All the women were in tears and the group stood in awe as they watched Michael profess his love to the only woman that he would ever love. It was heart warming that he could be so vocal about his feelings.

After every one had regained some composure, they left the hotel to get some food and to talk about the vision that had them all aroused.

Hey everybody!!

Fehrs
Lizzie
~C~
and
Bre

Thankx as always for the great feed-back.
I am not done with the next chapter yet because I needed some information from Beth.
It seems that Kyle was supposed to 'marry in the spring' in the original story.
I'm waiting for response from Beth before I wrap up what
I have on paper because I may need to make some changes.
Since you all mentioned it, I am intrigued by
a possible Kyle/Rita pairing,
but we have to wait and see.
I will return soon!! I promise :D
I am still writing while I wait,
so be patient with me --
I am still doing everything from my computer at work.
My computer at home is really sick
I'm not sure if it can be fixed and right now,
I can't afford a new one. :bad-words:

Anyway, back soon with a little somethin' somethin' for ya'.

Dee

Ok, here we go... this chapter is really long so it has to post in two parts. Sorry. I am almost done with the second half, so I will do what I can to get it posted by the end of the week. Wish me luck!!

After every one had regained some composure, they left the hotel to get some food and to talk about the vision that had them all aroused.

The group went to the Crashdown for some much needed sustenance and bonding time. They had a lot of catching up to do.
Michael and Liz made phone calls to track down Maria’s mom. They learned that at present, she was in Sacramento and in three days, she would be in Albuquerque. She was introducing new Aroma therapy products that she created and meeting with buyers who were interested in carrying the products in their stores. She was picking up supplies in Albuquerque then heading home.
Maria had one week to prepare herself to see her mom.
After everyone had eaten, Maria and Michael left them to go to her childhood home. She walked in and got emotional as she took in her surroundings. Michael sat on the couch and gave her time to reacquaint herself with the home that she had been away from for so many years.
Maria, seeing that the house was in moderate disrepair, felt the need to make some changes. She pulled a note pad from her purse and started writing down things that needed to be changed. All over - inside and out. She planned to re-do everything as a surprise for her mom. She felt that it was the least that she could do after being away for so long.
Michael watched her with a humorous gleam in his eye. He knew that once she set her mind to something, all pedestrians should steer clear.
Maria wanted to call construction workers and have them get started, but Michael being the voice of reason thought she should wait for her mom’s input. Maria liked the idea of she and her mom having a shared project.
Michael let her run around and exhaust herself. When he couldn’t hear her rambling around, he searched her out. He found her and what he saw brought a smile to his lips.
She was curled up on her old bed clutching a stuffed green alien that she named Michael many years ago, sleeping soundly, or so he thought. He couldn’t resist brushing the hair from her face and placing a kiss on her forehead. He let his hand linger and when he tried to turn and walk away, she grabbed his hand and tugged it until he submitted and obliged her by curling up in bed behind her.

“Where ya goin’?”
“Not far. Just back to the living room. You are tired and you should rest.”
“I will. Nap with me.”
“That’s a great idea. Maybe if we lay here long enough, we might fall into the dream plane again.”
“This mornings session is the reason that I need rejuvenation. It was so very…
“Intense.”
“I’ll say. Uhm… when we are on the dream plane, do you think that we simulate the actual sexual act? I mean, we can’t see ourselves when we are sleeping and…
“You are worried that we gave Max and the girls an eye full.”
“Yes and maybe they were too embarrassed to say anything.”
“Max would have told me, so stop worrying, ok? Besides that, you shouldn’t be embarrassed about this especially since we don’t have control of it.”
“Are you sure about that? Maybe we want each other so badly that we inadvertently cause it on a subconscious level. I have an idea. Help me research this…ok…the first time you were adamant about not sitting on my bed. I thought you might have a coronary by the look on your face. (she started giggling)
“You would dare make light of my fragile state? That hurts Ria.” (he feigned distress)
“It’s all in fun baby, it’s all in fun. (she kissed him softly) Ok, the second time was on the plane. We were relaxed at first, but around the time that I started getting sleepy, I was worrying a little…
“About what Maria?”
“I wanted to get you to Max as quickly as possible, that’s all. I was concerned about you being in pain.”
“Oh, I’m sorry that you had to worry…
“What are you apologizing for? We are part of each other. When I don’t worry is when you should be concerned.” (she smiled at him)
“Duly noted. Ok, the third was this morning…
“No, we have to count the time that I was dieing.”
We were dieing.”

The look on his face was one of absolute solemnity and a chill went through Maria because she understood. She placed her hand gently on his face and he leaned into it and closed his eyes.

“Ok, that’s three, and that time our emotions were off the charts. This morning was number four when we cried together - yeah, we were very emotional. That’s when we saw our babies!”
“The last was the most bizarre because I found myself willing it to happen.”
“Yeah, me too… I had just told you that we couldn’t make love until all the legalities were out of the way. I was really depressed about that, and it led to my melt down…maybe it happens when our emotions are heightened. That has to be it.”
“I think you are right. (pulling her closer) You are too far away from me. No more talking, let’s take a nap. Your debut is tonight. Are you nervous?”
“Not at all. Michael, when I’m on that stage singing what I want to sing, picturing you standing in front of me, I feel….free.”

Across town at the Crashdown Café…

Max has taken Liz home to rest up so she will be refreshed for Maria’s night. He and Iz are working on the books for the restaurant when Iz hears something that makes her flesh crawl.
Kyle and Fiancée Carol walk into the restaurant and she is verbally abusing him in a sickeningly whiney voice…

“Kyle, what do I have to do to convince you that I hate this greasy spoon?! You never take me anywhere nice…
“Carol, we are only here to pick up lunch for the guys. I called the order in so we only have to be here for two minutes tops.”
“Well, what am I supposed to eat?”
“Carol, I don’t have the time to take you to another place. If I had known that you were going to show up at my job for lunch, I would have made other plans.”
“Haven’t you heard of being spontaneous? I understand, you don’t love me…

Iz is thinking: This chick is certifiable!

Iz interrupts…

“Hey. Kyle, your order is ready, but I need to see you in the back for a minute. I think we got some things mixed up. He’ll only be a moment Carol dear. (big cheesy grin)

Carol smiled and rolled her eyes. She hated Kyle’s friends as much as they hated her. She couldn’t wait to marry Kyle so she could use her powers of persuasion to make him see that they needed to leave the God forsaken town of Ros-Hell. He was her ticket out and she would do whatever it took to convince him that it was the best decision for them both. She wasn’t too happy about using him the way that she had, but she also knew that he was a means to an end. She had no job, no money, no purpose. She had always gotten by on her looks. She thought of Kyle as an adorable doofus who would do whatever it took to keep her happy. He took very good care of her. She wanted for nothing, but living on a cops salary wouldn’t be enough. Her dreams were bigger. Much bigger and living in Ros-Hell would not do. She was still furious at him because he had been offered the job of a Bounty Hunter by a friend of his fathers and he told him that he would think about it. What was there to think about? A new job out of state that would keep him traveling so she could do what she wanted while he made four times what he makes now. Yeah, she would just have to convince him. He did almost anything that she asked while in the throws of passion. She would just have to put in some overtime. It was a real shame because Kyle would likely make someone a good husband one day, just not her. After she achieved her ultimate goal, she was getting as far away from him as she could. He could have that stinky little alien infested town. She was going to Las Vegas and become a showgirl.

While Carol stood lost in thought, Iz pulled Kyle into the break room…

“I honestly don’t know how you put up with her shit Kyle. You are too good a person for this. She is nothing…
“I know Iz.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I know. I’m not stupid, I’m just a little slow. I know what she is up to and I’m just biding my time until I break it off.”
“Why? She’s not at all worth it.”
“The sex is great.”
“You pig.”
(he smiled) “Give me some credit here Iz. The sex is great but not enough that I would compromise my beliefs. I’m just trying to plan a way to break it off quickly with out a lot of screaming and hysterics.”
“If I may ask, what tipped you off?”
“I found some notes that she’s been keeping. It seems that as soon as I start making some real money, she plans to take enough to make a start in Las Vegas.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“Not at all. Her big dream is to become a show girl.”

It took everything in Isabelle to contain her laughter. When Kyle saw the various shades of red that she was turning, he too felt the need to roll on the floor. Isabelle got a grand idea...

“Kyle, I want you to do me a huge favor. Maria is back in town…
“Maria DeLuca? Does Michael know?”
“Yes. They ran into each other in Georgia…listen, I’ll tell you that story later. I want you to find a reason, any reason, to ditch that psychotic showgirl of yours and meet us at the Hyatt hotel at 7:30. Maria is singing tonight and all her closest friends should be there to help welcome her home.”
“Majandra has come home. Wow! I never thought I’d see this day.”
“She is home and she want’s no parts of Majandra anymore. She isn’t re-signing when her contract is up.”
“You’re serious aren’t you?”
“Deadly, but look, just do me this favor and I’ll fill you in on all the details later.”
“What aren’t you telling me Iz?”
“For crying out loud Kyle, what could I possible be hiding? I swear, men just don’t trust women unless…never mind. We are all like family and we haven’t been together in a long time. Will you just come…

Carol pushed the door open with enough force to make it hit the back wall…

“Come where Kyle?”
“Damn Carol, it’s an innocent door for goodness sake.”
(he looked at Iz) "Mr. Evans needs my help with some repairs around his home. He wants me, Michael and Max to come by so we can go over a few things that need to be done this weekend.”
(her eyes lit up) “So, Michael Guerin’s back in town…
“Yeah. (Iz couldn’t help but butt in because she knew that Carol had a major crush on Michael) My brother is back and guess what? He and the love of his life ran into each other in Georgia. Trippy isn’t it? You remember Maria DeLuca don’t you Carol? You two had a few classes together in high school. Wait, this should refresh your memory…beautiful petit blonde with sparkling green eyes who for the last ten years or so has been known as the one and only Majandra. Ring a bell? Well anyway, it was the damndest thing, Michael was in an accident. It seems that some fool had the gall to run him off the road. Yeah, the person actually hit him while he was on his motorcycle. The impact sent him airborne and left him crumpled in a ditch, concussed and bleeding. As fate would have it, Maria found him. Is it just me, or would you say that they are Soulmates? Anyway, she took him to her home and nursed him back to health as only she could. Yeah, I would say that my brother has - got - it - bad for her. (she intentionally paused between each word for effect) She is the only woman that he has ever truly loved with his whole heart. Heck, I can hardly stand to be in the room with them. They always have this look in their eyes like they want to jump each others bones. I mean they absolutely can - not - keep their hands off each other. (she giggled and smiled) Their hands...their lips...
"Are we done here Kyle?"
"Yes, I believe we are. Let's go. The guys are waiting for this food."
"Don't forget Kyle. 7:30. Dad's expecting you."
"Tell him that I will be there. Carol, you wanna come with hunny? Maybe you could sit with Iz, Maria, Liz and Mrs. Evens while us guys...
"Um, no thanks. I think I'll sit this one out."
"Ok, suit yourself. I didn't want you to feel like I was excluding you. Bye Iz." (he turned and winked at her)
"Bye bye." (big grin)

Kyle grabbed the bags of food and he and Carol left the café. Isabelle stood watching them through the window front smiling.

Isabelle is thinking:
Just you wait Kyle. You are not gonna know what hit you in the form of a shapely Rita Ramos. She just might be the one to tame you...and Rita, who would be better for a sweetheart like you, who's fondest wish in life is for a stable family oriented man to love you? Oh yeah...you two are perfect for each other. Two good people who deserve to be happy. Iz, you are a genius girl. Now I have some serious planning to do. How do I get them to see that they belong with each other?

She sat at the counter and used the phone...

Hello Rita. This is Iz. I'm not calling to pressure you, but I was wondering if you had reached a decision regarding Maria's offer for you to stay for a few days...
You did? Great... Yes, there is something else that I need to ask you. I'm going shopping and I need a shopping buddy. Liz has been taken home to rest and Maria is with Michael at her moms place. I need a few things and since I'm a firm believer that shopping is a group thing, when one doesn't have a group to speak of, she would settle for a pair if you are game...
Thank you so much Rita. You've saved me from myself. I'll pick you up in forty-five minutes.

Across town, the phone rings and wakes Maria and Michael from their much needed nap...

"Michael...Michael are you awake?"
"What...yeah, I'm up...
"Answer the phone...
"You go..

She groaned and stumbled half asleep into the next room. When she reached out for the phone, the machine picked up the call. She stood and listened with an expression of confusion on her face. Michael walked in and stood behind her looking equally puzzled...

Jim, it's me. But who else would it be? Anyway, when you stop by to check on things would you please be a dear and grab the blue bag that I left in my bedroom? I need it for the conference. I'll be in Albuquerque on the third as planned. Meet me at the Radisson hotel room 203. I'll leave a card key for you at the desk. One more thing... uhm…never mind. I miss you honey. I can't wait to see you.

"What the hell is going on? Michael, did you, or did you not tell me that Jim is married?"
"Yes, I did because he was. Hey, calm down. I'm sure that there is a logical explanation. (he pulled her into his arms)
"Oh my goodness...my mom and Jim are having an affair."
"Maria, go take a shower and we will go together to see Jim."
"Please? Can we do that?'
"Of course. I'll get the bag from the car and use the guest shower. Baby, if you don't get all bubbly and aromatic in the tub we might be able to leave in half an hour." (he was serious)
"You are a funny one Guerin and it helps that you are so damned gorgeous." (she pinched his butt)
"Ow blondie! Watch the posterior. It's sensitive."
"Oh, I do watch the posterior and everything else. Just you remember that it's all mine - the whole package." (she smiled)
"Forever. (he pulled her into a searing kiss) Now go, (he knudged her forward) get more gorgeous. We have things to do."

Somewhere in the middle of the mall, Iz and Rita are having a good time spending too much money. Iz talked Rita into buying a new outfit to wear that night with a cute strappy, heeled sandal and matching purse. Rita missed hanging out with Isabelle and Liz. She hadn't had a girl’s day out in a long time. She loved the whole group of them because even though they knew of the permanent connection between Michael and Maria, they still accepted her and she always knew that what they felt for her was genuine. She was always treated with respect. Maria surprised her the most. She didn't pass judgement - she just welcomed her with open arms. She knew that if she were to move to Roswell, she would have a ready made family. Only one thing was missing, but she was sure that she would find him. Soon. She didn't understand how or why she knew, she just did.

Rita's thinking: Mental note to myself...always make sure that I look decent when I go out. I don't want to be rejected by my future husband before we are formally introduced.

The eager shoppers purchased their wares and left the mall. Iz took Rita to the hotel to gather her things and turn in her rental car. Rita decided to go to Iz's place until Maria picked her up later. She called her family to let them know of her plans and figuring that Greg was asleep, she left him a note thanking him for his help. Greg was standing in the shadows. He thought about speaking until he heard Rita mention that Maria was singing in the hotel club that night. Maria had left him a message earlier saying that she would speak to him later that night but he decided that he was going to the club.
While Rita packed, Iz waited in the hotel lobby so she could use the phone...

"Yeah?"
"Michael, it's me, Iz. Are you busy?"
"Nope, just stepped out of the shower. What's up?"
"Remember when you told me that if I ever needed money, all I had to do is ask? Well, I'm asking."
"Are you in some kind of trouble?"
"No, no. nothing like that. I need the money to help a friend."
"How much?"
"Ten thousand dollars in travelers checks...(she braced herself for a serious tongue lashing that would undoubtedly be heard all over Roswell)
"Done."
"But Michael...if it weren't of the utmost importance you know that, that...what, what did you say?"
"I said...done."
"Just like that?"
"Yeah Iz, just like that. You just better not be in any trouble. If you were, you would tell me, right?"
"Of course Michael. For some strange reason, you would be the first one that I told."
"And this thing, whatever it is, is legal?"
"Yes Michael. I promise."
"Ok. I'll make a phone call for you. Go to the local bank and ask for Stanley. He will probably ask you for your ID because he is completely paranoid where I am concerned."
"Probably because he is afraid of you. What did you do to him?"
"Nothin'. I had to yell at him a little, once. But I never physically touched him."
"I see. (she giggled) Thank you Michael. So, so much. This is on the up and up - honest. I love you baby brother."
"Love you too Iz. Don't get yourself in any trouble. Bye."
"Bye bye."

"Hey Iz, you ready?"
"Yeah. We need to make two more stops, the bank and our local courier. I have something that needs to be delivered right away."

They stopped at the bank and Rita waited outside while Iz went inside to handle her business. Rita saw something that caught her attention and she crossed the street to look in a store front window. Kyle was driving by with his partner and saw her. Rita could feel someone watching and she turned to see who it was. Their eyes made contact across the distance...

Matt - "Take your eyes off that woman and focus on the road. I would like to make it home to my wife tonight."
"Shut up Matt. You have a wife. Let me have my fantasies. Did you see her? She is gorgeous...
"But what about...
"If you mention her name in my car, I will pull out my revolver and shoot you."
"Kyle, you are not happy with her. Please - do what you should have done months ago."
"Matt, I am one step ahead of you. It will be done today."
"Well, it's about damned time. Now, about that dark haired beauty…
“Watch your mouth Matt, she could be my future wife. (smile) If we didn’t have to be back at the precinct – like right now, I would go back and ask her name.”

Rita turned to look into the eyes of a man that made her heart beat erratically.
(speaking out loud) "Why can't I meet someone like him?"

Inside the bank, Stanley went to the back to get the travelers checks and Iz used the phone on his desk to call the airport and purchase a one way ticket to Las Vegas. The ticket would be waiting for Carol at the counter. As she was terminating the call, Stanley came back with the checks and a document for Isabelle to sign. She put them in an envelope and bid him adieu. She walked across the street to see the courier. She waved at Rita who was still standing in the store front window looking at baby things. Iz went inside and purchased a box. She put the checks inside with a note that said:

Go To Vegas!! Live Your Dream!! There is a plane ticket waiting for you at the airport - the 6:45 flight. It's the only flight that leaves tonight so don't miss it!! If you decide that you don't want to take advantage of this one time offer, please drop the checks at the local bank with a teller named Stanley. He will know what to do.
Good Luck to you Carol,

From a friend

The woman behind the counter wrapped the package beautifully. The courier had a major crush on Iz. She told him that he'd get an extra fifty if he could have the package delivered in the next half hour. She kissed him on the cheek and stuck the fifty in his shirt pocket. The poor guy was so embarrassed that he stuttered...

"I...I...I...will ha..have it there in..in..in..the next (deep breath) fifteen minutes."

He left the building in a hurry to make his delivery to Carol Stevens personally. He made it to the house in less than fifteen minutes. He had promised Isabelle. Carol was not happy to see what she termed ‘the nerd’ at the door, especially since he had interrupted her nap. She was more annoyed when he insisted that she sign for the package or he couldn't leave it with her. She rudely slammed the door in his face with out giving him a tip, but he didn't care because he had gotten a tip from the most beautiful woman in Roswell. He smiled all the way back to his job.

Carol sat on the couch and admired the neatly wrapped package.

"What has Kyle done now? Damnit, if he keeps doing nice things for me it will make it harder for me to walk away from him. Harder, but not impossible."

She ripped the paper off the box and opened it...

"What the hell?" She pulled the checks out of the envelope...
"Oh my god, are these for real?" She read the note...
"Who could have done this? Kyle doesn't have this kind of money. Not yet. Who knows about my Vegas dream?"
She called the airport and the teller confirmed that there was indeed a ticket waiting for her at the desk for the only flight out that night. She couldn't tell her more other than the ticket had been purchased anonymously. Carol hung up. She was thinking that she should have given the nerd a tip for bringing her great news. (she broke into a huge grin)
"I'm going to Vegas!!"

She was glad that she hadn't lugged all her things from her parents home. It would take less than an hour for her to pack and shower. She would just leave Kyle a goodbye note and leave that grungy town as fast as the plane would take her. She made a phone call and started packing...

"Hey Carla!! Yeah, it's Carol. Guess what? I'm headed your way...no - tonight. You got room for me?"

After Michael made the call, he and Maria dressed and headed over to Jim Valenti's house. They walked hand in hand to the door and Michael rang the bell...

"You sure that you want to do this?"
"I have to know Michael."

They heard a resounding 'Come In!!' from somewhere inside the house, then they heard – ‘Kyle, why do you still bother to knock on the door?!'

Maria hesitated for a moment then they stepped inside and stood in the foyer. Jim stepped around the corner with a towel covering his just washed hair. He was dressed in jeans and a tee, but he was barefoot. He pulled the towel down and could hardly believe his eyes...

"Maria? Maria DeLuca, is that you? (he smiled the grandest smile) Let me look at you! (he stepped forward and pulled her small body into a friendly embrace) Your mother will be so, so happy to see you. Does she know yet that you are here?"
"No, not yet. Sheriff Valenti...
" It’s Captain, but call me Jim, honey, please. Come on in and sit. Both of you. Hey Michael." (they shook hands)
"Hey Jim."
"Jim, I'm here to ask you about my mom. I would rather not waste time and beat around the bush."
"Ok."
"First, I've come home to stay."
"I'm glad to hear that. Your mom will be ecstatic."
"Which brings me to what I want to ask you. I was at my moms and the phone rang. Before I could answer, the machine picked up. Uhm...the message was for you. My mother is a grown woman and I would never entertain the thought of telling her how to live her life, but Sheriff – I mean Captain, I'm told that you are married and...
"Not any more."
"What happened Jim? The last time that I saw you two, you seemed really happy."
"Please, let me grab us some lemonade and I will explain everything."

Michael and Maria sat patiently as Jim relayed the events surrounding his and Amy's lives for the past eleven years. Jim met Ann before Maria left town. He, Ann and Amy were all good friends who got together on occasion. He explained that after Maria left, Amy slipped into depression and since she was such a special friend he and Ann started spending time with her. They made sure that she was eating and they helped her with her store because they didn't want her to lose what she had worked so hard for. He explained that they were afraid that she would give up and unintentionally harm herself.

Maria listened as she shed silent tears.

“After Amy got better, Ann and I married. We were still as close as ever. Not long after that, Amy brought to my attention that Ann didn’t look well. I couldn’t see it because she was always so happy and full of life. She was the person who took care of us. She later confessed that she hid it from me…
“Hid what Jim?”
“Ann was very sick. She had known for years. The disease was degenerative and once her body started breaking down, it was painful. She said that she didn’t tell me because she wanted to live a full life and she couldn’t stand the thought of being in and out of hospitals being a pin cushion when there was nothing that could be done for her. I was slowly losing my mind, but your mother…(he looked Maria in the eyes) your beautiful, supportive and wonderful mother helped the both of us through the worst time in my life. I was the Sheriff so I had a job to do. I still had a family to support. When I wasn’t home, your mom was here taking complete control of the situation. She did everything – fed her, bathed her, read to her. She was an unstoppable force. At one point, I was so desperate that I called Max. He came and when he touched her all he felt was pain. He couldn’t help her. The damage to her internal organs was too extensive and they were all shutting down. All that we could do was keep her comfortable.
Toward the end she was hardly conscious. Amy and I would sit up all night watching over her. One night, (a long pause) she didn’t have the strength to fight anymore. She went quietly in her sleep.
Amy was there thank god, because I lost it. I was in a daze. I don’t remember doing anything. Amy took care of all the arrangements because I was mentally and physically unable. That is when I knew just how strong your mother really is. She never left my side. When I was able to function, I remember telling Amy that she was giving too much of herself and that she had no obligations to me and my son. She stated simply – ‘I would never turn my back on you…

"Like I did...(he wiped her tears and gave her a reassuring squeeze)
"No, Maria. She never believed that. Please, don't you believe it either. One thing that I admire about your mom is her ability to know people. She can just look at you and know you. She knew that after time had passed, it was next to impossible for you to come back. She didn't fault you for that. She understood your need to be independent - to make it on your own. She also understood why. Remember the picture that you sent to her of you and Greg the night that you won the big award? Well, your mom looked at the picture and she said to me, "I see in his eyes that he is domineering and controlling and selfish." She said, "Jim, my baby has DeLuca blood running through her veins. When she figures it out, and she will, she will then do what is necessary." She always believed that, and from the looks of things, I'd say that time has come.

"We are so sorry about your wife."
"I am too, but over time it got easier. Time and Amy. We waited about a year before we started dating. We are still dating. Know this Maria, I'm in love with your mother. In some way, I think I always have been. I think you two know better than most that sometimes there is only one person on this planet or any other, for you. I can tell you this without embarrassment or feeling like I’m committing a sin. Amy is my person. I loved my wife with my whole heart but she is gone. I never thought that I’d be truly happy again, but your mother changed all that for me. When I think Amy's ready, I'm gonna ask her to marry me. Is that ok with you Maria?"
"Jim, you don't need my permission, but yeah. I think that it's wonderful. I just want her to be happy. Thank you Jim for doing what I couldn't. Thank you for protecting and taking care of my mother. (she hugged him) I will never forget your kindness.”
"Hey, it was no problem at all. We took care of each other. Now that you are home, maybe she will really consider my offer for her to move into this house with me."
"Oh, yeah?"
"Yeah. I've been trying for months with fail. She tells me that you have to have a place to come home to, and she want's to be there when you do."
"Maria is making plans to restore the house."
"Yes, I am but I'm gonna wait to see what she wants to do. If she moves in with you, she can sell it to me. I have some definite plans for my childhood home. I couldn't bare to see anyone else with it. Jim, I planned to surprise her in Albuquerque but since you are going to see her, I will surprise her at home. I'm thinking that I need to plan a family get together for her return. Maybe a backyard barbeque."
"Sounds good. She would enjoy that. Listen, if you need to use my yard, you are welcome. I have more space in the back than Amy does."
"Sounds like a plan. I will take care of everything."
"Here, take this extra key to the house. When you start buying supplies, just put them in here. You and Michael are welcome to stay here if you like."
"I think we'll be ok at moms, but we might. Here...(she wrote her cell number on a piece of paper) call me when you have definite return plans. I want to have everything ready when you get back."

Twenty minutes away

Carol stepped out of the shower and called a cab. She quickly dressed and threw her dirty clothes into her carryon bag. It was four oclock and she wanted to leave early enough to stop at the bank to cash in one of the checks. She wanted to have some real cash in her pocket when she arrived so she and Carla could go out and party. She would call her parents when she got there. She wouldn't give them the chance to try to talk her out of going. The cab pulled up and the driver honked the horn. She took one last look around, left a letter on the table, and she was on her way.
"Las Vegas, here I come!!"

Ok, that's it for today.
I'll be back soon,

*`*`*

It was four thirty when Maria and Michael left Jim’s house. She called everyone to let them know that they were to meet at the Hyatt suite at seven thirty. She wanted to have an early dinner with everyone at the hotel restaurant. She asked the girls to meet her at the hotel spa at five forty five. She had made appointments for manicures and pedicures at six and she had surprises for each of them. She dragged Michael to a dress shop with her to get an outfit and shoes for the night. He was ornery about it in the beginning, until she tried on some things for him. He helped her select a long black skirt with a front slit that was thigh high, and a fitted white blouse that he termed ‘The wrap thingy’ because it wrapped around the front and tied on the side and at the sleeves. Michael liked the way that her legs looked in a strappy, heeled sandal that tied around the ankle. The end result was exquisite – just the outfit for a Jazzy debut.

They went next door for men’s apparel. Michael let Maria dress him. He was a jeans and doc’s guy, but he would wear slacks and clown shoes for Maria anytime she asked.

The girls were actually on time when Maria and Michael arrived at the suite. He and Maria shared a passion felt kiss and he left her with the gossiping women to search out Max who was no doubt, hiding from them as well.

The guys at the precinct got a happy surprise when they were let off early for the day. Kyle dropped Matt at home and was headed to his place so he could take a hot shower and try to recapture some semblance of normalcy in his dismal life. The plan was to tell Carol that it was over. Plain and simple. He laughed to himself when he thought about Iz and the way that she was able to handle Carol. It was priceless. He needed to call her to find out what was going on so he dialed her cell number:

"Hello, party central!" (he could hear women laughing in the background)

"Iz? It’s Kyle, where are you?"

"Uhm…hold on for a minute…(there was a pause while she went into one of the bedrooms to close the door) Ok, I’m here. What’s up?"

"That’s what I called to ask you. What’s going on and what’s with the secrecy?"

"All will be revealed in time. Listen, dress nice. Tie is optional, but not necessary. Wear

Perry Ellis – yeah, that smells really good on you, and uhm, let’s see, there will be dancing so…

"Isabelle?!"

"Yeah?"

"What the hell is going on?"

"Kyle, just trust me and don’t be late, ok? Now, go home and shower. Better yet, throw on anything. You can dress here at Maria’s suite. I’ll have Max and Michael come by for you on their way here and you can follow them."

"I’m pulling up in front of my place now. (his voice dropped a notch) I’m really not in the mood for a confrontation. It’s probably too much to ask that she not be here when I go inside."

"Maybe not… (spoken on a whisper)

"What?"

"Oh nothing, I’m just wishing happy thoughts for you. Go on, get moving. I’m gonna call Max and I’ll see you soon. Oh, and Kyle – don’t eat anything. We are having an early dinner in the elegant hotel restaurant."

"Ok Iz. See you soon." Kyle’s thinking: Women…I’ll never figure them out. Now, to exorcise a demon…

Kyle parked and went inside. The last thing he expected was what he saw. There was a letter for him on the table. He picked it up and opened it carefully. He was even more surprised by what he read…

Kyle,

By the time you read this I will probably be in Las Vegas.

I got the opportunity to live my dream and I couldn’t pass it up. This may have been my only chance to do what I really want to do. Don’t worry, if things don’t work out for me, I won’t come crying back to you. This is it for us. Honestly, I’m not all that upset about it. You know as well as I do that we were mismatched. We had fun, now it’s time to move on. You want to live in Ros-Hell, I do not. You want children, I certainly do not. I want something bigger and better and I know that I won’t find it there.

You are a sweet and caring person. You took good care of me and I appreciate that. I really do. I hope you find someone who will love you the way you need to be loved.

If you find anything of mine, just have it sent to my parents house. I took the tee shirt of yours that I like to sleep in. I hope you don’t mind, but it is my favorite.

Thank you for being good to me Kyle. I’ll drop you a line sometime.

Carol

Ps…

Your friends will be happy to know that I’m gone. It was no secret how they feel about me and that’s ok, because the feelings are mutual!

Kyle is thinking: Wow, that was easier than I thought. Isn’t that something…I’m not all that upset about it either. Damn, I’m free! I should have gone back to find the dark haired goddess.

He looked around his spacious three-bedroom house to make sure that she didn’t leave anything. When he was satisfied that everything was in order, he headed for the shower. He was so relieved to be rid of an irritant that he whistled a tune. He put on some jeans and a tee and packed a garment bag and waited for the guys.

Across town at the Hyatt spa…

The girls are all kicked back. Their hair is set in curlers and they are engrossed in a serious gab fest.

"Are you enjoying yourself Rita?"

"Maria, this is the best time that I’ve had in too long to remember. Thank you."

"Stop it, there is no need for thanks. I want you to stay with us as long as you like. I really enjoy your company. We all do. Hey, do you think that you would ever consider moving here?"

Rita’s thinking: In a heartbeat, if I can find what you and the others have. I won’t move here if I’m going to be lonely. (the girls thought Rita was thinking about the question) "Yes. I would. There would be some things to consider, but I really like it here."

(Maria could sense that there was a reason that she was hesitant) "Well, I didn’t mean to put you on the spot."

"You didn’t."

Iz- "Well, get it all considered, because we want you here with us!"

Liz –"Yeah Rita, we really do. There is always a job opening for people in your line of work. I hope that you are really considering this and not agreeing just to appease us. I think a change in scenery would be good for you."

Iz is thinking: Yeah, and I’m getting ready to hook you up with the only eligible bachelor here…

Ok ladies, we don’t want to scare her away before we get her to agree. I think she may need a little incentive and I have just the thing in mind."

Ria –"Do share!"

Iz –"Oh no, my secrets are my own, but be patient. All will be revealed really soon!"

Rita –"That sounds ominous. Should I be afraid?"

They all laughed…

Ria –(clearing her throat) "Changing the subject…I have a surprise for all of you. The last time that I was in New York, I was window shopping and I saw something that reminded me of Liz and Iz and how special our friendships were before I left. At the time it made me sad. This piece of jewelry that I saw kind of stayed in the back of my mind. When I got here and met Rita, I thought again about that piece of jewelry and I knew that I had to get one for all of us. We are a special lot of ladies so to speak. We are bonded by friendship first, then by a very important secret that’s changed all our lives forever, for the better. I think we all agree on that. My wish is that we always remain close because you all are like my sisters. It took me a while to figure out where my loyalties are and to whom. I was away for so long, too long. And I am so, so thankful that you welcomed me and didn’t turn your backs on me. I love you. And you Rita, I feel like I’ve known you forever. It happened the moment we talked. Liz and Iz knew you first and I know that they love you. You are one of us. It seems that you accept us with our little quirks and personality flaws…

Iz –"Who’s flawed?

They all start laughing…

…see, she is the worst! Anyway, I didn’t say this to you before, but thank you for taking care of my Michael. I know that once I left, I had no claim on him, but he was always here. (she placed her hand over her heart) That couldn’t have been easy for you, because Michael has never been easy…

Rita –"Maria, what happened in the past brought us to this place. Without it, we wouldn’t be here now. I wouldn’t know any of you and I wouldn’t have met Michael. After meeting you, I understand his passion and what drives him. I know now that he is capable of loving with his whole heart and…well, let’s just say that I kept him safe until you could return. Believe me when I say that I have made peace with the past. Your family and I have mutual respect for one another and I have the sneaking suspicion that if not for Max, I wouldn’t have survived that accident…

Maria –"Rita,…

Rita –"No…no words are necessary. (Iz is passing out tissues) We are connected and I like it. We as a group share something that I will never share with anyone else. That is so special to me. So please, no more tears. Look at us, how are we supposed to go to your debut looking like this? You all better cut it out right now because my future husband might be in that club and I want to look good!"

They burst into fits laughter

Iz –"Excuse me, but where is my surprise?"

Maria –" Oh, I almost forgot…(she opened a bag that was beside her chair and pulled out four velvet boxes, each with a red ribbon) so, I called Anri’ in New York and asked if he still had this trinket in the store. He almost flipped his lid when I told him that I needed four. Girls, it’s amazing what having money will get you. I called Anri’ yesterday, and these were waiting for me at the desk this evening. He had them shipped from California because it was the closest place that he knew of that had what I wanted and could get them to me the quickest. (she gave each of them the box that had their name on it)

Rita –"Oh…

Liz –"My…

Iz –"God…

Maria –"Do you like them?"

Every one is talking at once…

Rita –"This is the most beautiful bracelet that I have ever seen…

Liz –"Are you kidding me? You call this a trinket…

Iz –"These must have cost you a fortune…

Maria –"I don’t know what they cost and I don’t care. By the time we are done, we should all have a wrist full of charms. I started them off. You each have your own name and the rest of ours as well. That’s our sisterhood thing. Rita, you and I have some catching up to do. We have to find your potential husband and I have to get a divorce before we can put the names of our guys on our bracelets. I’m confident that it will happen soon for both of us. Iz has a Jesse charm and Liz has a Max charm and an added bonus, the names of their children. One of whom is my namesake. Me, Liz and Iz have an Alex charm. And lastly, I got all of us little hearts."

Rita –"This is incredible Maria, but it’s too much."

Maria –"Nonsense. Every few months or so, we should have an occasion to get another charm."

Liz –"This is sooo cool. We should all wear them tonight. We will be your lucky charms Maria."

Ria -"You don’t have to do that."

Iz –"Don’t be silly, it’s a great idea."

Rita –" Why have a piece of jewelry if you don’t wear it?"

They all embraced Maria then finished with their preparations for the night and went up to the suite to dress.

Across town…

"Max, you should see the monkey suit that she picked out for me. Man, I’m a jeans and doc’s guy. She chose the whole ensemble, right down to the clown shoes. I have to admit, the slacks are comfortable, but she said that the outfit makes me look dapper. Can you imagine a dapper Michael Guerin?"

"No, Michael. I don’t think I can. (he laughs) It’s only for one night."

"Yeah, and she knows that I’d do anything for her. I will do whatever it takes to give her a little happiness."

"You’re getting sappy in your old age."

"Only for Maria Max, only for Maria. Aren’t we supposed to be picking up Valenti?"

"Yeah. I’m grabbing my things now so we can get going. If we are late, the ladies will kill us."

Michael called Kyle to tell him that they were on their way and to be ready because they didn’t want to be late. He then placed a call to the suite to let the ladies know that they would be there in less than twenty minutes and they would need his room because they weren’t dressed. Iz took the call. She started making plans to keep Rita and Kyle apart until the last minute…

Iz –"Ok ladies, the guys are on their way and they need Michael’s room. When they get here, make yourselves scarce. They should be surprised when they see you, and they will be. Be warned, I will be taking pictures all night. Hey, who’s groaning?"

The girls were all over the suite getting dressed. When Isabelle heard the guys at the door, she used a little magic to hold it closed until she could get the others safely in Maria’s room. Once they were inside with the door closed, Iz let the guys in and ushered them into Michael’s room, then joined the girls.

At 7:15, Max and Michael came out to sit on the couch to wait. Iz came out to talk to Kyle.

Iz – "Kyle isn’t dressed yet?"

Max – "Yeah he is, but he couldn’t get his hair right."

Michael – "Aren’t you ladies ready yet?"

Iz – "Patience dear brother. I think you will be pleasantly surprised."

Michael – "I’ve already seen Ria in her outfit. I picked it."

Iz – "Yeah, but you haven’t seen her with her hair and makeup done."

Michael – "Iz, is this a woman thing? She’ll be beautiful no matter what. Wake me when it’s time."

He lay his head back on the couch and closed his eyes. Max chuckled and Iz went to find Kyle…

Knocking on the door…"Kyle, are you decent?"

"Yeah. I hope you are here to fill me in on the big secret now."

"Come, have a seat, we don’t have much time. (she waved her hand over his head and fixed his hair) Please don’t be angry, but I set you up."

"What? No Iz. Is that what this is all about? Who is she?"

"Her name is Rita. Don’t worry Kyle, she is beautiful and I know that you will like each other."

"Uum hum…and what’s wrong with her?"

"Nothing. Listen, you’ve never met her. She was once married to Michael…

"What? What have you gotten me into Iz? Michael’s ex-wife? Oh my God, you know how territorial he is…

"Kyle, calm down. They parted on great terms. She and Maria are friends and she is a good person. You were away training for detective when they got married and it didn’t last long because you know as well as I that Michael is incapable of loving any woman with his whole heart with the exception of Maria. It’s not a character flaw, he just can’t help who he loves. Rita – being the wonderful person that she is – understood that and she is ok with it. She is also one of the few who know our secret. (he looked surprised) Yeah – first hand knowledge. Max saved her and she was witness to Michael saving Maria. Please Kyle, do this for me and for you. This is your chance to meet a real woman who is kind. If you don’t have a good time, I will apologize to you and to Rita. She doesn’t know yet and I want you both to have a good time with a wonderful person."

"Ok, ok Iz. But if I don’t have a good time, I’m holding you personally responsible and you will be treating me to dinner for the next month since I don’t have anyone at home to cook for me anymore. (she smiled a little too brightly) I have the sneaking suspicion that you are already privy to this information…(pause) yeah, I figured as much and don’t worry, I won’t ask how you know. I’m just gonna hug you…(he hugged her) and say thank you because I know that you had everything to do with it. Now, let’s go. My date is waiting."

They walked out into the living area and Max and Michael were still alone. Kyle went into the kitchen for water and Rita and Maria and Liz came out. Max tapped Michael on the shoulder and they both stood with their mouths agape.

Ria – "Michael…what is it…do I look ok?"

Michael – "You look better than ok. Baby, you’re an angel. Liz and Rita, you look beautiful."

Max – "I agree. You all look gorgeous."

Rita – "Thank you. I’m going to the kitchen for water, does anyone want anything?"

The guys said a simultaneous ‘no thanks’ while they and the girls stood staring at each other. Rita headed off towards the kitchen. Unknown to Rita, Iz walked in behind her. Kyle was turning away from the sink when Iz did a little Genie magic and made Rita stumble and fall into Kyle’s open arms…

Rita – "Excuse me, please…I am so sorry. Did I hurt you? Did I get make up on you…Do I know you?"

Kyle – "You’re excused… it’s ok - no, no, and no. (he smiled) There was no harm done. I’m Kyle by the way and you must be Rita."

"Yes, I am."

"Well, I will be your escort for the night. You look beautiful, and vaguely familiar."

"Thank you, and I was thinking the same thing. I don’t think we’ve met though….Oh…(a look of realization crossed her face)

"What is it?

"I think we saw each other earlier today. I was…

(snapping his fingers) "Standing at a storefront window and I was driving by. Yeah, I remember now. Kyle’s thinking: Thank you Iz!! What can I get for you?"

"Water, thank you."

Iz is standing where they can’t see her, smiling.

The ladies grabbed their purses and they all went downstairs to the hotel restaurant. Greg stood in the shadows watching their every move.

Dinner was pleasant. They all laughed and talked and had a good time while Rita and Kyle were getting to know each other. As soon as it was evident that they clicked, Kyle took the plunge and asked Rita out the next night. After dinner, they all went into the club to take their reserved seating. It was the first night of the reopening since the renovations had been done. Just before opening, Maria went behind the scenes to get her music list and to practice a little with the band. Kyle and Rita were still engrossed in each other and everyone else chatted freely. No one noticed Greg slip into the club and take an inconspicuous seat in a dark corner. After a while, Isabelle felt warm hands on her bare shoulders and she turned to look into the smiling face of Jesse. He took an early flight so she wouldn’t have to fly solo for the night.

The club was filling fast and the group was anxiously awaiting Maria’s performance. Suddenly, the lights dimmed and the band took the stage and started playing a soft, jazzy tune. Maria was introduced as ‘The Hyatt’s own Ms. Margarita Salt’. Michael smiled a grand smile because he asked the MC to say it. Maria stepped onto the stage with a voice that commanded attention. Michael was watching the split in her skirt and wondering if he had made the wrong choice because he didn’t want the guys in the club looking at her bare leg. The audience was entranced. From Lady T’s ‘Sunny Skies’ to Billy Holiday’s ‘I’ve got it bad (and that ‘aint good)’, she sang five songs that held them captive until her last note. She got a standing ovation and shouts for an encore, so she gave them one. My Funny Valentine was a crowd favorite. Her tip glass on the piano was filled to the top. When she left the stage, the band kept playing and the group got up to dance…

Michael – "Baby, you were great. I felt as if you were singing to only me."

"I was." (he held her closer) Uummm…I love you."

"I love you more. You know, I was rethinking my choice of skirts for you. Your whole leg was exposed. I felt like people were ogling my personal property. This is just too sexy for public viewing."

"You are looking pretty decadent and edible yourself Mr. Guerin. This outfit suites you. I know that you don’t believe that, but you look so good that I can’t express it with out being explicit."

"You are so good for my ego DeLuca…

"You still don’t believe me. I suppose you haven’t noticed how all the women in this room have been undressing you with their eyes."

"Hell no I haven’t noticed, I don’t look at any woman but you."

(she giggled) "Good answer."

"What’s with the shiny things on your wrists?"

"Gifts from me to the girls. As soon as I get my divorce, your name is going right here. (she points to the bracelet) Until then, I wear you here, close to my heart. (she opens her shirt enough to reveal a charm on the end of a necklace. It’s Michael’s name in the middle of a heart) I want this to be over so much Michael."

"I know baby, I do to. We will be together soon, I promise you that we will make it happen."

Liz – "Wasn’t Maria wonderful? I think Jazz is her thing."

"Yeah, me too. She sounded really good. Hey, are you tired?"

"No, I’m fine Max. You know that I’ve done this twice before. I’m an old pro. I think I’m good for another hour or two."

"Look at them. They look really happy."

"If she could just get through this divorce everything will be ok. I am so happy that she decided to come home."

"You really missed her didn’t you?"

"I didn’t realize how much until I saw her. She was afraid that we would turn our backs on her."

"I guess we have to thank Michael for being in the right place at the right time. Hey, you got a new bracelet."

"It was a gift from Maria. She gave all of us one."

"It’s neat…is that my name?"

"Yeah, and the kids. I love it."

Iz – "Jesse, I’m so glad you’re here. How did you manage to come home so soon?"

"Business wrapped early, and I was really missing my wife."

"Oooo, lucky girl. Dip me…(she shrieked when she was suddenly dipped) That was fun. Didn’t Maria sound great?"

"Yeah, she did. I didn’t know that she sang Jazz."

"Actually, she prefers this to what she was doing on her label. Hence the reason that she’s not

re-signing. She is in the middle of some legal anguish. If she can’t work it out, she may need to retain you. Is that ok?"

"Of course, but wouldn’t your father be better suited for what she needs?"

"Not necessarily, but he is in the middle of that big case right now and there doesn’t seem to be any quick resolution."

"If she can give me a little information, I’ll draw up some preliminaries for her – just in case."

"Ok honey, thank you. She and Michael will appreciate that."

"Nice bracelet. You been spending money?"

"Not much, but I didn’t buy this. Maria did. If you would pay a little attention to all our wrists, we have matching trinkets. Look honey, mine has your name on it."

"Ooo, so now do I have to go and get a tattoo that says Isabelle?"

"Sounds good to me. Now, where to put it…

They both laugh.

Kyle – "Are you enjoying yourself Rita?"

"Very much. Thank you for showing me such a wonderful time. Can I ask you something?"

"Sure, anything…

"Why aren’t you married?"

"Well, there are a few reasons, but the most important being that I think I’ve been saving myself for the right woman.(he smiled and she smiled back) What about you Rita? What’s your story?"

"Well, I’m pretty sure that someone has told you that I was once married to Michael."

"That in itself is hard to believe."

"Why? Because the first impression of Michael is that he’s standoffish? (she giggles) Michael has a side that he doesn’t show many. I had the honor of seeing it for a while."

"Why are you not married anymore?"

"Simply put, Michael loves Maria. Oh, there is no doubt that he loved me, but he wasn’t in love with me. I’ve made peace with that. We can’t help who we love Kyle. Sometimes people don’t understand that. No one was at fault. We tried, it didn’t last, and we moved on. It was a learning experience for both of us. We are stronger for it because we were able to put the past in the past and move on. Now I have the best group of friends that anyone could ask for."

"I hope that includes me."

"Definitely." Rita’s thinking: If I am reading you right, you may just become more than a friend – and that’s fine with me.

Greg is still standing in the shadows watching everything going on around him. He was angry with himself because Majandra really did sound phenomenal. He loved what he heard and he could have capitalized off that if he had just listened to her. She may have even wanted to stick to the original plan regarding the contracts. Now it was too late, or was it. He had an idea. He slipped out while everyone was dancing.

He left a message at the front desk for Majandra, checked out, and took a cab to the airport. He knew that she would need the jet to go to New York so he purchased a ticket for a commercial flight. He had one more chance and he planned to use it.

The group danced until the night came to a close. They all went up to Maria’s suite to put everything in order because she was checking out. Isabelle took a bunch of group shots. When she finally put the camera down, Jesse took over. He took one of the girls on the couch that they weren’t aware of – being completely engrossed in girl talk. Maria gathered everyone around to tell them of her plans to fly to New York and her hopes that some of them would come with she and Michael. Liz was too close to term to fly so that counted she and Max out. Jesse had to prepare for an upcoming case and Iz was filling in for a co-worker so they wouldn’t have the time. Rita would definitely go, and Kyle had five vacation days that he could take. He and Rita wanted to spend some time together so they could really get to know each other.

It was settled, Rita and Kyle would accompany she and Michael to New York. The next order of business was the family barbeque/get together in honor of her mother. Being space conscious, Maria decided that she would take Jim’s offer to have it at his place. Liz wanted the task of planning the barbeque while Maria was away. When she returned, they would get together to compare notes.

The group planned to meet for lunch the next day. Maria’s plane was scheduled to leave at two thirty. They all grabbed their things, took one last look around and left the suite. Maria stopped by the front desk to settle her bill and to pick up any missed messages. She discovered that her bill had been taken care of. That didn’t sit well with her so she had the charges reversed and credited back to Greg’s account then paid for the room herself, making sure that she got the receipts. Her messages were stuck in her purse – forgotten in the chaos. Liz, Max, Iz and Jesse went home. Maria, Rita and Michael took a ride with Kyle to Maria’s mother’s home. Maria and Michael went inside to give Rita and Kyle the chance to say a private goodbye. They didn’t want to say goodnight to one another. They talked for a few minutes then shared a chaste kiss goodnight with the promise of seeing each other soon. When Rita went inside, Maria showed her to the guest room…

Ria – "Oooo, look at you ..all lit up like Christmas! You wanna chat about it?"

"I’d love to, if you don’t mind. Are you too tired?"

"Too tired for girl talk – are you kidding me? Get ready for bed and meet me in the kitchen."

The girls readied themselves for bed and a gab fest. Maria noticed that Michael was unusually quiet. She went into the bedroom and he was spread out across her bed sleeping in his clothes. She smiled at how gorgeous he looked then went to the task of undressing him. He awakened when she unzipped his slacks…

"Hey, don’t undress me unless I get to undress you too." (he smiled)

"Soon baby, real soon. Go on and get comfortable. Rita and I are gonna chat for a while. I’ll be back soon." (he pulled her into his arms and kissed her soundly)

"Hurry back baby. I can’t make love to you yet, but I’d like to hold you while we sleep if that’s ok." (he finished undressing)

"Of course it is. Until I can express what I feel for you the way that I ache to, I’d love nothing more. (quick kiss) Now get your sexy self under the covers quick before I lose what little control I have. (he smiled) I’ll be back soon."

Maria went into the kitchen to find that Rita had made two mugs of hot chocolate.

"I hope you don’t mind that I looked around and made cocoa."

"Of course not. It will go great with ice cream. I think my mom has chocolate syrup, whipped cream, nuts and sprinkles."

"Whatever you have is fine."

The girls made sundaes to go with the hot chocolate then went to the living room to get comfortable on the couch…

"Did you have a good time with Kyle tonight?"

"Very much so. I had a better time than I expected to. Before we get into that, can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Do you believe in love at first sight?"

"Well, …honestly, I’m not sure. Let’s reflect on my first love for a moment. When I first encountered Michael Guerin, I couldn’t stand him. When we were kids he teased me mercilessly. Years later, after finding out what it was that made he and the others afraid, I was afraid. Not only of them, but for them. Things started changing when they were in danger of their precious secret being exposed. It was at that time that we decided that we had to trust each other and work together.

One day, we were in the middle of one crisis or another and every one was stressed and on pins and needles. Michael and I were stuck with each other. We were literally like oil and water. We were always very passionate about everything that we did, especially fighting. So, we were bickering back and forth and Michael – knowing that I was nervous kissed me to quote unquote ‘calm me down’. That was it. Something inside me changed. I knew at that moment that I would do anything for him. I always knew that he was gorgeous, but he had the worst attitude.

After that first kiss I think things changed for him too. He put up a gallant fight but I was just as stubborn as he was. I kept pushing until I forced a chink in that armor of his and that was it. He was not easy by any means. We had the most horrendous fights, but Rita, we loved each other so much. A lot of the time, no one could stand to be around us. He tried to push me away quite often. That had a lot to do with his past, but we always found a way back to each other. As soon as we finally got it right, I got scared and I messed it up. I broke his heart in the worst way on my quest for stardom. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself for that because it’s a really serious thing for Michael to trust. I worked at it for years. I broke down his wall piece by piece until he did,
and then …I left. (long pause) I don’t know…now that I think about it, maybe I have loved him since I first laid eyes on him. No one in my life has ever challenged me like he has. I have been granted a second chance by the only man that I have ever loved and I have to make it right. (she sniffed and wiped some stray tears) I’m sorry Rita, I didn’t mean to prattle on. Your question was simple and I turned it into my life story. Please – tell me about my probably soon to be brother - because of our parents, Detective Kyle Valenti…long story that I will tell you about later."

"Ok…(she smiled a grand smile) Kyle…(sigh) He has the face that I would love to see and the name that I would love to say every day."

"I knew it!! You two look so good together."

"Do we really?"

"Yes you do. I bet that you’d make the most gorgeous babies. Kyle is a really great guy. I hope you both to take your time and get to know each other."

"That’s my plan. Oh…he’s so great. He’s gorgeous and he smells so good. He dances wonderfully and he knows how to converse. I was hanging on his every word…and when he kissed me…

"He kissed you!? Details…

"It was just a kiss goodnight, but I wished it would go on and on. That’s probably not too smart considering that we just met, but I felt tingles all over my body. I’ve never felt that from anyone before. I’d like to be honest with you if I may."

"Please do."

"I’ve never had anyone to discuss this with and I feel like I can tell you anything – even if it has to do with Michael."

"You can Rita. It’s ok."

"Ok,…Maria, I loved Michael, I did. I do. For a while, I think that I believed it to be romantic love but now after serious consideration, I’m positive that it was obligatory. Max saved me. At the time I wasn’t aware. When I woke, Michael’s face was the first that I saw. He cared for me without having a reason to, until I was able to return home. After that, he checked on me to make sure that everything was ok so I did what was natural and reached out to him. He reached back and we started dating. We were two lonely people who found that it was better to spend time together than to be alone. We needed something solid to hold on to. I don’t recall where the crazy notion to get married came from, but we did it I suppose out of necessity. We tried it for a while but we called it quits when we started getting on each others nerves. After all that we had been through we didn’t want to part hating each other. The split was amicable. I came back to Roswell to put him in the past. I needed to face him to do that. I was still holding on to something that I honestly never had. I know what a great guy he is Maria. During the divorce, the lawyers were discussing settlements. Michael wanted to give me alimony and I refused to accept it. I’ve always been self sufficient. The judge ordered it anyway. The lowest amount that he would allow was $500.00. Every month with out fail, five hundred dollars is deposited into an account. I’ve never touched it. It’s been two years so there is approximately $12,000.00 of his hard earned dollars just sitting there. He won’t take it back you know. Believe me, I’ve tried. He’d like me to consider it payment for anything unpleasant that he might have put me through. Life with Michael was anything but unpleasant. I figure that if I’m lucky enough to become a mommy one day, hey – I’ll have college money."

"That’s one thing that you and Kyle have in common, you both want babies."

"The more I learn about him, the more I like him. Maria, the connection was instantaneous. I fell into him when we were at your suite. He caught me and it was like static electricity. I felt this surge and we made eye contact and I felt all warm and tingly. He smiled at me and I thought my knees would buckle."

"I am so gonna have to talk to Kyle. This could be a Soulmate situation."

"Maria…

"Just a tiny little fishing expedition, that’s all…ok, ok. I’ll let things progress naturally, and they will Rita. I know it. I can feel it. I saw the look on Kyle’s face tonight and he didn’t let you out of his sight. I bet if I called him right now…

"No Maria!! (they giggle) I’d like to think that he’s thinking of me tonight. It will make me look forward to tomorrow."

"More than you already do?"

"Yes. I know that we just met, but I feel something. This could be my chance and I don’t want to blow it."

"I understand that better than you know. I want this to happen for you and Kyle. We all deserve to be loved."

"I agree. (she yawns) I think that’s my cue. Come on, let’s get these dishes washed up. We have a big day tomorrow."

Rita and Maria cleaned the kitchen and then made sure the house was locked up and said goodnight.

When Maria turned off her bedroom light and got under the covers, Michael’s sleeping form gravitated towards her. He pulled her into his arms and spooned her. She took comfort in his warmth as he buried his face in her hair. She smiled. She wanted more than anything to sleep like this for the rest of her life. She knew that she would have to battle with Greg and she prayed that she would be strong enough to stand her ground. Her relationship with Michael and her sanity depended on it. Before she realized it, her smile turned to a frown and she was crying. Her body was shaking with silent sobs and she was trying with all her might to stay quiet so she wouldn’t wake Michael. His body shifted and he pulled her closer and spoke on a whisper…

"It’s gonna be ok baby."

"I hope so Michael." (He turned her to face him. There was just enough moonlight shining through the curtain for her to see his face. He wiped her tears)

"Maria, I love you. I will wait for you as long as it takes. I’m not going anywhere. Fate brought you back to me, and this is where I will stay. (he kissed her lips and hugged her close) Don’t give up on us."

"Never. I will never love anyone the way that I love you. I can’t because you’ve ruined me Michael. I can never give my whole heart to anyone else because I gave it to you long ago."

"I was just thinking the same of you. Maria, we’ll figure this out, ok? There must be a way that you and that pompous ass can come to a peaceful agreement."

"With you by my side, I think I can handle anything. I love you."

"I know baby, and I love you. Sleep now. We’ve got a lot to prepare for."

Hello everybody -
I am finally back. I know...it was a long time coming, but this chapter was tough
After re-writing and re-working it, it finally sounded...'ok'.

Though I am happy to bring you an up-date, it is with a heavy heart that I do so.
Sadly, we have lost one of our great FIC writers.

This chapter is dedicated to the wonderful Ash.
Many of you on this forum know her as Confrontations. Formally known as
Cominatcha. I called her ~C~.
I received the news July 15th that we lost Ash to the tragedy of a drive by shooting.
Her best friend April conveyed that while she was still with us, she spoke
of how much she loved this board and how the people here had become like best friends.
She was one of the firsts to welcome me here with open arms. Her writing style was Fantabulous!
This one is for you ~C~, my Candy Sister.
I miss you...

Thank you sooooo much for your continued interest in the ramblings of a mad woman :)
As long as you read it, I'll write it...
~C~
Liz - you made my morning with the cabagepatch  :Fade-color
Fehrs and Bre - two oldies but goodies  Thankx for
sticking with me!! :Fade-color
Jendansuer and Parkerevans - welcome to our little family. I do hope
you enjoy this chapter and after reading it,
you come back for the next!! :Fade-color

Smooches to the originator - Beth. There wouldn't be a story for me to take over without her. 8)

It’s gonna be ok baby."

"With you by my side, I think I can handle anything. I love you."

"I know baby, and I love you. Sleep now. We’ve got a lot to prepare for."

The next morning, Rita woke first. She showered, dressed and made coffee then prepared to wake Maria and Michael.

The bedroom door was ajar, but she knocked lightly anyway. When she got no response, she stepped

in – knocking again, and the sight before her was reminiscent of the scene in the hotel suite when Michael and Maria were on the couch and the group was standing by watching and waiting as they lay almost motionless on the couch.

She knew right away that they were on the dream plane and in her haste to exit the room quickly, she backed into the night stand and got startled. She stumbled and lost her balance when she tripped over one of Michael’s dress shoes. She fell forward and in reaching out to stop her fall she laid hands on one of the legs that were tangled together under the covers.

Max’s theory was right on the money. Rita felt light as a feather as she was somehow pulled into the shared dream. What she saw was pure and beautiful, but it made her blush. She felt like a Peeping Tom – or Peeping Rita would probably be more accurate. The two people that she most admired, engrossed in each other and sharing the most passionate and loving kiss that she had ever witnessed. She looked past them because a window on the other side of the room caught her attention. She walked around the kissing figures and stood looking out the window. She was surprised to see that she was in the same house. She was looking down into the backyard at a group of people – herself included and very pregnant. Kyle was rubbing her shoulders while bending down to whisper something in her ear that was making her giggle. They were clearly in love. It made her feel special. Liz and Max were sitting under a tree on a blanket watching their children run around the backyard blowing and chasing bubbles. Iz and Jesse were sitting together on a lounger making cooing sounds and grinning at their newborn baby that Iz held in her arms. A woman who she thought to be Maria’s mom was swinging gently in a hammock with two sleepy toddlers on either side of her, trying to get the attention of the gentleman who was standing in front of a grill wearing an apron that said ‘kiss the chef’, and a tall chef’s hat with red lips all over it. Rita thought that he was probably Kyle’s dad. Everyone looked extremely happy. It was definitely a picture postcard scene. Her eyes were fixed on the images of herself and Kyle. She knew without a doubt that the baby that she was carrying was a boy. So engrossed was she in the fantasy playing out before her eyes, that she failed to notice Maria and Michael losing items of clothing. Movement and moans of pleasure behind her drew her attention away from the window. She turned around in time to see dream Michael with a bare chest and clad only in boxers, removing dream Maria’s button front dress.

With a startled intake of breath and the will to flee, she was forced out of the dream world and back into the here and now.

Michael and Maria woke to an embarrassed Rita scrambling around on the bedroom floor….

Rita (speaking rather quickly) – “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude. I knocked and when I entered…well…I bumped into the nightstand and fell into you…So, so that was the infamous dream plane huh?” (nervous smile)

Maria – “You…you were there? What did you see?” (a look of embarrassment)
Rita – “Please don’t be angry or embarrassed. I’m embarrassed enough for all of us. What I saw was love. It was all around us. (she smiled) Kyle and I were married and pregnant, Iz and Jesse were celebrating their new baby, Max and Liz were under the big tree watching their children play, a woman that I assume to be your mother…

Maria – “Was swinging in a hammock with Michael’s and my sleepy toddlers and telling Jim, my step dad and Kyle’s father, how to cook the food on the grill. It was the annual family Bar B Que. We decided to have one every year after the one that we had to surprise my mom, and Michael and I…

Michael – “Were in our own private world.”

Michael and Maria looked at each other with sadness and longing. The silence was too loud. Maria sniffed, Michael sighed and Rita spoke…

“I was coming in to wake you because we are supposed to meet the others for lunch and I see that you haven’t packed…

Maria – “You are right, I haven’t packed and I have lot’s of other things to do. I’ll use my moms shower and Michael, you use the other. It will save us some time. Please remind me to call Jesse. I faxed him some things yesterday that pertain to the divorce and I am anxious for his input.

Maria and Michael showered and dressed then met Rita in the kitchen for coffee. They had quickly packed and were waiting for Kyle to pick them up. Maria was going through the things in her purse so she could switch to another that matched her shoes when she came upon a sealed envelope from Greg…

Michael – “What’s that?”

Maria – “I’m not sure. It completely slipped my mind the night that I picked up my messages when we checked out of the suite.” (she hesitated, looked at Michael then opened the letter)

Majandra,

You were phenomenal tonight – as always. I didn’t make my presence known because I didn’t want to upset you or your friends. In reality, I had every right to be there. I am your husband and manager after all. (She looked up at Michael. “He was in the club with us”)

I never understood what you have always tried to tell me about this other style of singing that you do so well, until now. Of course I’ve heard jazz before and I even like some of it, but I have to say that it really suites you. You do it without effort. It’s clearly your thing babe. (Babe?) It should be our thing. We should be doing this together. I’m sorry that I didn’t listen to you before. If I had, well…that’s neither here nor there.

If you can find it in your heart to listen to me, I think we might be able to work some things out regarding the divorce (or maybe no divorce) that will make us both happy. I’m on my way back to New York on a commercial flight. Don’t worry, the jet will be on the strip when you need it. It’s more yours than mine anyway.

I am asking if you would please give me a few minutes of your time before the hearing to discuss this very unique situation of ours. You know how I feel about it and I won’t give you up if I don’t have to.

You remember how good we are together, don’t you?

What changed Majandra? Did seeing him bring back some familiar feelings for your ex lover. Is this about sex? Is he the reason that you won’t share yourself with me anymore? I suppose by normal standards he is a decent looking guy – among other…unique things. Yeah, unique is the way that I would describe his ‘gift’.

I’m feeling the need to remind you that you left him. Why don’t you remember that you left him and you never looked back…

Maria - (holding onto the table and sobbing, she dropped the letter) “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry Michael. I loved you so much and I didn’t mean to stay away so long. I missed you to the point that it hurt me to breathe. I had no concept of time…for years I just existed. I did what he asked of me because it occupied my time when thinking about you was too much for my heart to handle. I didn’t mean to hurt you. You have to believe that…

Michael –“I believe you…I believe you baby and I would never hold it against you. Maria, it’s ok. You did what you had to do and I understand that you did it the only way that you knew how. Do you understand what I’m saying? You did what you had to do to get where you felt you needed to be. That was your time to shine. I won’t lie to you. It hurt me more than I can say when you left me and believe it or not, I understood it then in spite of that. We are here together. That is the only thing that I care about right now. Not once did I never think of you. All I wanted was for you to be safe and happy even if it meant that you weren’t with me. If I had known for the briefest moment that you weren’t happy, I would have come for you. No questions asked. You’ve always been right here. (he placed her hand over his heart then pulled her into a firm embrace)

Greg knows how to push your buttons. I caught that not so subtle hint at my lineage. I see that he is a master at manipulation. Let him play alone Maria, let him play all the games that he wants to but you listen to me. You have to be strong baby. I will help you. Don’t ever doubt that. No more tears and no more apologies. We are in this together.

Michael picked up the letter and with a smirk on his face and Maria still pressed firmly against his chest he continued to read…

…you left him and you never looked back. He can’t have meant that much to you. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that I am right. I can’t believe that you want to leave me for him. I hesitate to call him a freak (Michael placed emphasis on the word freak) because he did something for you that I could never do. I will never forgive myself for what happened Majandra. It was just an unfortunate accident and you are better now. Thank God. It would have killed me to lose you that way. He made you well for me. A ‘skill’ like his is a handy thing to have – if you know what I mean. Come home Majandra, come home to me and let’s forget about all this nonsense. I’ll even forgive you for sneaking around to see him behind my back.

One more thing Majandra… secrets of this magnitude, in the wrong hands, have the potential to hurt people. Help me make this right and we never have to speak of it again.

You will always be mine Majandra. I created you. I love you,

Greg

“That was a blatant threat Michael. What are we going to do?”

“We are not going to worry. You are under enough stress as it is with the divorce. Please – I know that it will be hard, but you have to let me worry about this. I’ll call Max. Max and I will figure something out. Concentrate on getting your nuptials dissolved.”

Rita stood in awe of the two people in front of her. She hoped that things would work out because she knew how much they love each other. She wished there were something she could do to help them. Michael faxed a copy of the letter to Jesse and once the dishes had been done, Kyle came to the door and helped them load his SUV. After the bags were loaded and the house locked up, he and Rita smiled, stole glances and blushed at each other as the group headed to the Café to meet the rest of their extraordinary family.

When they arrived, all their favorites had been made thanks to Liz and her handy dandy chef. They all sat around eating and discussing the divorce, the letter and the Bar B Que. They went into a long discussion about the dream plane and the fact that a person really could be pulled in. Liz had already made a tentative list that she would send with Maria to go over on the flight. Maria called the pilot to check the itinerary. They were scheduled to board at 2:30 so they had about an hour to spend with the friends that weren’t going. They learned that Jesse had flown out to New York to conclude some business and he offered to consult on her case. When Maria was told that he was going, she faxed him all the divorce information so he would be apprised once she arrived. She had a damned good lawyer, but this was a ‘special case’ involving things that she couldn’t tell. Greg’s not so subtle threats made the situation worse. Jesse would definitely be an asset. They just needed to figure out how to work around these ‘special things’ if Greg were vindictive enough to make them public knowledge.

Liz, Max and Isabelle accompanied Michael, Maria Rita and Kyle to the air strip to see them off. They all boarded the plane and hung out until it was time to leave. They all liked the jet. It was spacious enough for the whole group and Liz made Maria promise that they would all go somewhere together after she gave birth and was medically able to fly. Which would not be long after since she had a podster for a husband. Iz snapped about two hundred pictures while she was on board. The group gave up and pretended that she wasn’t there so she explained that because she was so happy to have everyone together again, she had to make memories and she had a lot of catching up to do.

The flight was uneventful. Maria and Rita had made fruity drinks and had chosen a DVD to watch, but the two almost couples were in different corners of the plane lounging, relaxing and sharing their own private secrets. Michael and Maria watched Kyle and Rita with interest. They could see the mutual admiration and attraction between the two and as much as they wanted happiness for themselves, they also wanted it for their friends. They deserved it.

Upon arrival in New York, the group checked into a two-bedroom suite at the Waldorf. Maria’s lawyer set an appointment for that evening, but he had medical problems that morning and it had to be postponed. Jesse agreed to step in for him. (one major problem solved) They went over the preliminaries while on conference call with the lawyer in the hospital. They all showered and changed because the girls wanted to go shopping for essentials – shoes, skirts, blouses, purses…all the things that a woman would need in the big city. The guys decided to go to a local sports bar. They didn’t want to be any where near the shopping center. They all made plans to meet for dinner later that night.

Maria and Rita stopped by her favorite jewelry shop to see Anrí. He complimented them on their matching accessories. He thought Maria made an excellent choice. While they were in the shop, they ordered ‘Kyle’ and ‘Michael’ charms for later. Rita had decided that Kyle was hers and she would do what ever it took to convince him. Maria laughed and told her that she wouldn’t have to do much because she already had him wrapped around her little finger. Anrí promised to have the charms ready before they returned to Roswell. They all started chatting about diamonds, which led to a conversation on engagement rings. They both saw what they would call their dream ring after excitedly browsing the shop. Anrí asked if he should hold them, but they declined since they hadn’t been asked yet.

They met the guy’s for dinner then went out to a jazz club. Maria knew the singer and she invited her to sing. Maria refused because she wanted to spend time with the others, but they insisted that she go and wow them. Singing helped her to relax so when she got on stage she let lose. She wanted to get rid of some pent up frustration because she knew how nervous she would be the next day at the hearing. She agreed to sing two songs, but ended up singing six because the clientele didn’t want her to leave the stage. Singing from her heart, looking into the eyes of the man she loved and seeing how much he loved her was wonderful. For a little while, she was able to forget.

Greg was out roaming the city due to boredom. Of all the clubs in New York, he happened into the very one where Maria had just taken the stage.

He sat – again unnoticed – in the back and watched her with dollar signs in his eyes and a smirk on his face. He was thinking of how much her voice had matured. It was more throaty and sexy and he knew that he could really capitalize if he could just get her to sign another contract. He would be happy with one more year, but he was trying to figure a way to have her stuck in an impenetrable clause that would have her bound to him for at least five more years.

He figured that it was the only way to get even with her for leaving him because no one leaves Greg Malone. He may not be able to stop the divorce, but he sure as hell could keep her in court for a long time. That should be just the thing to wipe the smirk off her alien freaks face. What else could he be - living in the strange town of Roswell?…and he had seen the things that he could do with his own eyes. He may not be able to get people to believe what Michael was, but he could make their lives hell. Greg supposed that it was in his best interest to be glad that the freak was able to save Majandra because he would more than likely be in jail if he had failed. What hurt most was, she couldn’t open herself up enough to try to love him, not even a little bit, because of Michael Guerin!! That was a name that he had truly come to hate. He had done so well keeping her away from her past. He had always known that she was skittish. If she had kept in touch with the people she left behind she would have left him long ago. He still found it hard to believe that they happened upon each other by chance when they were in Georgia. (he spoke on a whisper) “You thought you could sneak around behind my back and get away with it. ‘We ran into each other Greg’ Yeah, right. There are no coincidences in this life. I will get what’s coming to me Majandra, and you will too. You can believe that.”

He again slipped out unnoticed and into the cover of night.

After leaving the club, they went for a walk by the water. The setting was romantic…

Kyle and Rita walking by the water

“Are you enjoying yourself?”

“Very much so, what about you?”

“I feel like it doesn’t matter where I am as long as you are with me. Does that sound strange Rita? I mean, we’ve literally only known each other a few days but I feel like I’ve known you forever...like I’ve been waiting for you.”

“It’s not strange at all. I am going to be honest and tell you that I am feeling it too. It’s kind of scary, but at the same time it feels right. Like we are supposed to be here.”

“I am going to tell you something and I hope that it doesn’t scare you away. This time last week, I was in a relationship that I wasn’t happy in. The night that I met you was the night that I had chosen to end it.”

“What happened?”

“I never got the chance to break it off because when I got home Carol, that was her name, had left me a letter saying that we were through and it was for the best.”

“Oh Kyle, I’m sorry…

“For what? I’m not. I’ve known for a long time that she wasn’t the person that I wanted to spent the rest of my life with. We had conflicting ideals. We wanted different things in life…

“Like what Kyle? Do you mind if I ask?”

“Of course not. I have always wanted children. She made it absolutely clear that she did not. I once asked, just for conversation sake, what she would do if she were to become pregnant while we were together. She looked at me and she was completely serious when she said that I would never know. That hurt me so much, but I didn’t let her know that it did. I just made sure that we always used protection – well, we always did anyway. I think we just used each other to pass the time. I know that probably sounds awful, but we were two consenting adults. I think unconsciously…I was always looking for someone better for me. You know? Just sort of biding my time until I was completely fed up and ready to move on. Maybe I wasn’t strong enough at first because when we were in college I was completely in love with her – or with the idea of having the hottest girl on the campus. She was every jocks dream and my ultimate fantasy. (he chuckles) She was a cheerleader. In my mind, I had built her up to be much more than she really was.”

“I’m sad to hear that you weren’t happy, but was it at least a learning experience?”

“Yes. Would you like to know what I learned?” (he smiled – she reciprocated)
“Very much.”

“Carol was sometimes crass and verbally abusive. She hated my friends. My friends hated her. My dad questioned my sanity but he encouraged me to make my own decisions. I know now that she was just as unhappy as I was and she was looking for something in me that I couldn’t give her. I learned that I’m not that sex starved woman crazy jock who thought chasing women was a sport. I am just a simple man who wants ordinary things in life.”

“Like?”

“Like, my beautiful Rita…a woman who loves me for me. I want a woman who will help me build a family, and not just my self and a wife - I want children. More than one. I want a normal job that pays well enough to allow me and my family to live comfortably. That is what will complete me.”

“That sounds wonderful, and remarkably a lot like what I have always wanted in life.”

“Do you believe in second chances?”

“Absolutely.”

“Maybe…maybe this is fate giving us ours.” (he smiled)

“Maybe.” (she reciprocated and he placed the softest kiss on her waiting lips)

Michael and Maria sitting on a bench looking up at the New York skyline

“Michael?”

“Yes baby?”

“If the unthinkable should happen…

“Maria…

“Please listen. (turning to look in his eyes) This is heavy on my mind. If by some unfortunate turn of events, the judge decides in Greg’s favor, would you be willing to come away with me?”

“Are you kidding me? I would leave with you in a heart beat, but why are we discussing this? You should be thinking positive.”

“I am thinking that I am positively in love with you and I am trying to be strong and do the right thing by refraining from making love with you while we wait for a judge to decide my fate. It’s not fair that I can make the rational decision to end this farce of a marriage and at the same time I have to wait for some one to bang a gavel and say it’s ok - or not. It’s not fair that Greg knows that we’ve never loved each other but he would rather fight me than just sign the damned papers. It wasn’t fair that after everything that we went through to be together, I got scared and walked away from you. My life line. I can’t get over what I did to you. I know how hard it was and what it took for you to let me in and trust me completely.”

“You have to get over it and forgive yourself Maria. I forgave you long ago. Let me tell you something. What you did was like what I did to you time and time again. I would push you away and try to walk out of your life but you were always there for me, pushing back. You always waited for me to work through my sometimes self imposed frustrations. I was a very angry person baby and I didn’t know how to deal with you being in my personal space. You were always there for me. You were always there when I got off my high horse and let the chip fall off my shoulder and came crawling back. I always came back Maria. I always came back to you because you were the one constant in my life. You didn’t judge. You just loved me. It’s only fair for me to do to same. No matter how long it takes. I’ve been waiting for years. Even when you got married…I was prepared to wait forever but Rita happened. I needed someone Maria. I was so lonely without you. Don’t misunderstand, no one in this life time could ever take your place. I was slowly going crazy missing you and at the same time wanting to hate you for leaving me and marrying him. I wanted to prove to you and to myself that I could move on too. Rita and I distracted each other when I was losing myself. Rita helped me to stay sane and to hold on to what little I had left of the person that you helped me to become. There came a point where we both knew that a major component was missing and we couldn’t stay married to each other with out being completely in love. That part of me was reserved for only you. Rita had yet to find the one. Looking at her now with Kyle, I think her time has come. This is as it should be Maria. We shouldn’t be discussing going away. We should discuss you and me standing together with our friends and family to help you fight for your freedom. This is our time. You don’t honestly believe that when your mom finally sees you that she will allow you to walk out of her life again do you? And what about Liz for that matter? I think that she would track you down and do you bodily harm. (they laughed) No matter what happens, I will be where ever you are.”

“Thank you Michael. Thank you for reminding me of my reasons to fight.”

The almost couples walked for a while longer then headed back to the hotel suite. They all showered and turned in for the night. Kyle and Rita’s room contained two double beds. They lay together on one to watch a scary movie and cuddle. They fell asleep in each others arms.

After going over the itinerary for the next day with Jesse over the phone Maria and Michael snuggled in close under the covers and planned their future until they fell asleep in the comfort of each others arms.

Maria

We were the first on the docket the next morning. We caught an early breakfast in the hotel restaurant to settle my queasy stomach then headed over to the courthouse. Every one was there with the exception of Greg which was odd considering the fact that he asked me in a letter to meet with him before the hearing. His lawyer sat on the side and every now and then I would catch him giving me the eye. The bailiff came out and asked for the lawyers to come inside the judges chambers. I had been feeling antsy since we got there so I knew that something was very wrong. We just sat around and waited what seemed like forever. When Jesse and Greg’s lawyer finally came out, Greg’s lawyer left the building and Jesse looked stoic. I almost lost my breakfast. The bailiff showed us to a private room where we could talk freely…

“The depositions have been presented to the judge. We all saw that Greg didn’t show up, so the divorce was contested on his behalf by proxy. Being his lawyer. As we all know, you claimed irreconcilable differences. Greg claims mental cruelty…

“What?”

“Yes, and he also feels that he may be entitled to a portion of your future earnings if you continue to sing due to the fact that he financed you when you first started your singing career. He claims that you – in turn, abandoned him with out cause and your current success is contingent on him because he provided the initial financial ground work.”

“I can’t believe this. Any money that he contributed, he got back a thousand times over.” (I wanted to cry)
“Don’t be too concerned. This tactic only delays the procedure. This is probably what Greg was hoping for all along. It will take more time, more money, more paper work, but the outcome will be the same.”

“How much longer?”

“Roughly six months.”

(Michael put his arms around me) “Why is he doing this? He’s always controlled the finances…damn it, I don’t want to get into this. Jesse please – is there anything that I can do to make this go away?”

“Maria, short of getting him to just sign, or flying out of the States for a quickie – which he would have to agree to, there is nothing else unless you give in and sign with his label for another year. That is the

catch 22.

I felt defeated.

“We have some evidence that will more than likely work in your favor. The sheriff who went to serve the papers at Greg’s New York residence got a signature from a woman claiming to live there and being Malone’s fiancée. That statement alone helps to discredit him. I have sent an officer of the court to try and get a statement from the woman in question. In the mean time, Greg’s offer to give you the divorce under his conditions is on the table. Do you have a counter offer?”

“No. My answer to signing his contract is NO! I won’t do it. I will relinquish all funds if I have to. I don’t care. The money means nothing to me. I have made a way for myself that he knows nothing about, so I don’t need anything from him.”

Before you make a decision of that magnitude, let’s see what happens after we get that statement, ok? I should be hearing from my colleague in the next two hours. Why don’t you all go out and try to relax. When I hear from him, I will call you on your mobile.”

“Ok. Thank you Jesse. I don’t know what’s going to happen, especially with the threat to Michael hanging over our heads, but I trust you to do what’s best for me.”

“It’s my pleasure Maria. I would do anything for my wife’s family.”

We left the courthouse feeling numb. We went back to the hotel to shower and change and go to a café for an early dinner. We were in the cab when we got Jesse’s call. We were to meet at the courthouse the next morning at eight. After we dined we decided to catch a movie to pass the time. There was a multiplex not far from where we were so we decided to walk there and catch a cab back to the hotel. Rita and I were walking side by side chatting about the latest in gorgeous but comfortable foot ware while the guys were walking a couple of paces behind us being rather silly. Every now and then we would hear a slight whistle and a chuckle. We had almost reached our destination when we heard the screech of tires, a sickening crunch and a grueling yelp. Rita and I screamed when we saw a small animal run past us and down a dark alley…

“Michael…you have to help him. He got hit by that car!!”

Rita and I took off running down the alley not bothering to realize how dark it was. I could hear Michael yelling for us to wait for them. Rita and I slowed down because we couldn’t see the damaged animal. By the time that we caught site of his barely wagging tail, Michael and Kyle had reached us. The dog was half hidden behind some cardboard boxes. I reached out to move them away when I felt Michaels hand on my shoulder…

“Wait Maria…we don’t know if he’s sick. What if he bites you and he’s rabid? Step back please? Let me.”

There was light shining through the window of the building that we were behind, casting an eerie glow where we stood. Michael moved the boxes. Not only was the broken dog behind them, there was also the figure of a man laying in a pool of blood. His back was to us, but we could see and hear that he was still breathing with difficulty. I’m sure that Rita and I screamed but I don’t remember doing so. Michael and Kyle gently rolled the man and when his face turned towards me I felt faint. He was barely recognizable. His face was swollen, black, blue and bloody, his nose was crooked and his eyes were closed. His pockets were turned out and his shirt was ripped open. He wore no watch or ring. His shoes were gone. It was apparent that he had been mugged and beaten close to death. As Michael checked him over, he determined that he had probably been stabbed. He was still losing blood. I dropped to my knees when the figure spoke…

(cough…cough) “Are…you..ju..just gonna..st…stand there and (cough) let me d…die Gue…rin?”

We were looking at the battered body of Greg Malone.

“Wait Maria…we don’t know if he’s sick. What if he bites you and he’s rabid? Step back please? Let me.”

There was light shining through the window of the building that we were behind, casting an eerie glow where we stood. Michael moved the boxes. Not only was the broken dog behind them, but there was also the figure of a man laying in what looked to be a pool of blood.

“We…well…isn’t this i…ronic? (cough) You…you’ve found your…self facing a…a moral d…dilemm…mma. Save the beast th…that’s causing your Ma...ri…a (said with venom) heartache (cough, cough) or be a beast…and let m…me die.”

Michael lay his hand across Greg’s forehead and said, “Sleep.”

Greg’s eyes closed and all they could hear was his raspy and labored breathing.

Maria – “Can you heal him Michael?”

“I don’t know…I’m scared to try Maria because I dislike him so much. Baby, he hurt you…

Rita and Kyle are standing together with Rita clamped onto Kyle’s arm calling for an ambulance on her cell while he was on his cell with Max asking him to conference call with Iz.

…Maybe I was able to heal you because Max and Iz were so close.”

“I know how you feel about him Michael. I feel the same way, but we can’t let him die.”

“I know, I know and I’ll try for you. Damn, I wish Max was here.”

Kyle – “He is in a way…

Michael looked up and Kyle handed him the phone. Maria, Kyle and Rita stood around him and looked towards the alleys entrance to make sure that no one could see what they were doing. Max told him to relax and concentrate. He told him to focus because he knew that he could do it because it was his power that pulled from he and Iz when Michael healed Maria. Max told him that if his theory was correct, Michael was probably stronger now than any of them.

With that, Michael handed Kyle the phone and lay his hands on Greg’s broken and bleeding body. The air around them rose a few degrees and suddenly Michael’s body was encased in a soft blue glow. Greg’s still form started to mend as it rested against the cold, dirty ground in the alley. As Michael stopped the extensive bleeding from the wounds in his chest and sides, he could see the attack through Greg’s eyes. He even experienced the pain in moderation. He knew from the looks of Greg that if he felt the pain full force he would not be able to continue. He kept one thought in mind… ‘This is for Maria’. Michael pulled back before the cuts completely closed. He didn’t want him to die but he didn’t want to heal him completely either because he was skeptical about doing it in the first place. It was still with him after all the time that had passed. The fear and the panic he always felt when publicly using his power that stemmed from years of living in fear of being discovered and bringing harm to those around him.

Whoever attacked Greg worked him over well. Michael felt at least two broken ribs and his leg was at such an angle that it had to be broken. Michael decided to straighten the leg and let the doctors deal with the breaks. Greg would have a lot to think about while he was in the hospital immobile, stitched and wrapped up and in a great deal of pain. Greg’s mouth was bleeding and upon further inspection it was discovered that he was missing a tooth. He also had the distinctive markings of boot prints across his cheek and the side of his face. Michael concentrated and worked at fixing any injury that could be fatal if not attended to before Greg could make it to the hospital. He was pulling back when they heard the ambulance at the alley entrance. Maria was on her knees behind Michael and he fell back into her arms. He was tired, breathing heavily and sweating. Maria helped him to stand and lean against the wall to compose himself as they moved to the side to let the paramedics through.

Paramedic – “Is he ok Miss?”

Maria – “Yes.”

Paramedic – “Are you sure, because he seems to be winded. Does he have a history of asthma?”

Maria – “No, he’s just tired from chasing that poor dog that got hit by a car.”

Paramedic – “I’m afraid that the dog didn’t make it. Well..if you are sure that he is ok.”

Maria – “I am thank you.”

The paramedic turned his attention to Greg.

Maria – “You ok baby?” (She wiped the sweat from his face)

“Just tired…

“You did it Michael. I am so proud of you. Thank you. I know that it was difficult because Greg is an ass, but you are a better person than he is so you should feel good. Come on honey, lean on me. We’ll go hail a cab so you can sit.”

“Maria, beautiful and so petite is gonna hold me up.” (he smiled a weak and tired smile)

“I’m stronger than you think I am and. You just think of the many ways that I’m gonna show you.”

“Can I quote you on that?”

“You can, and I always keep my promises.” (she kissed him lightly on the lips and helped him walk to the entrance of the alley to hail the cab)

As Kyle explained how they found Greg to the paramedics, Greg’s neck was put in a brace and he was lifted, strapped onto a gurney and placed into the waiting ambulance. He still hadn’t regained consciousness, which was a good thing because they didn’t want him to start rambling like a mad man. The group followed the ambulance to the hospital in the cab. Maria called Jesse to let him know what happened. When they arrived at the hospital Maria was given Greg’s medical forms to fill out. She explained that they were separated but she was given the forms anyway. Before she could even think about filling them out a hysterical woman came rushing up to the nurse’s station asking for her fiancé…

The woman – “Please, can someone tell me where to find my fiancé? His name is Gregory Malone.”

The group turned to look at her.

Maria – (softly spoken) “Oh this just gets better and better.”

The nurse – “But…that’s his wife…uhm…

Maria – “Uhm…soon to be ex-wife. We are separated. (slight smile) Hello. My name is…

The woman – “Majandra – yeah, I know.”

“No, my name is Maria and you are?”

(she sighed and looked as if she had to think about answering) “I am Sharon. I received a call from a Mr. Ramirez. He told me that you found him.” (she looked as if she were close to tears)

“Yes we did. It was a serious coincidence. It’s almost unreal the way that it happened. We were chasing a dog that got hit by a car. We followed it into a dark alley and found Greg behind some cardboard boxes.”

“So…he’s…he’s ok?”

“We don’t know yet. He looked to have been beaten and robbed. There is a lot of bruising around his face and we think he has broken ribs. We called for an ambulance as soon as we found him.”

(She let out a sob and the group noticed her tears) “Excuse me…but I am so, so tired. I can’t take much more of this. It seems as if I have been waiting for him forever and it’s not fair. It’s not fair because I love him. You don’t. I have given him all of me…all that I have to give. I am always here in that big house waiting when he comes home from traveling all over the damned country with you. I understand that you are bound to a contract and you both have obligations but what I don’t understand is why. Why do you refuse to give him a divorce? Why won’t you divorce him Majandra so we can be a family? (Maria stood shocked and dismayed. The others were looking at Sharon like she was crazy)

“Uhm Sharon sweety, we really need to talk. (handing her a tissue from Michael and motioning towards two chairs in a corner in the lounge area) Oh, this is Michael by the way, and Rita and Kyle. (She nodded to acknowledge them then turned to Maria)

“I’m listening…

Rita – “Excuse me for a moment Maria. Kyle and I are going for coffee. Would either of you like some?”

“Yes Rita, that would be great, and you Sharon?”

“That would be nice. Thank you.”

Michael – “Here is some money. I saw a Starbucks on the corner across the street…

Maria – “Oooo, get me a Grande Caramel Machiatto with extra caramel.”

Sharon – “Two.”

Michael – “Three with an extra shot in mine and get what ever you want.”

Rita and Kyle left the area in search of coffee. Michael stayed a few feet away from Maria. He was still very tired so he sat on one of the couches and put his feet up. He probably would have gone to sleep if not for watching Maria and the deluded woman sitting across from him…

“Sharon, I don’t know what Greg has been telling you but there is one thing that I need to make abundantly clear.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s not me that’s holding up the divorce.”

“What? But it has to be you because Greg said…

“Sharon, I am the one that filed. That is the only reason that I am in New York right now. Greg didn’t show up at the hearing. He contested by proxy.”

“I don’t understand. There was a hearing?”

“The hearing was this morning. Greg’s lawyer stood in for him and pleaded mental cruelty. The only way that he will sign is if I sign another contract for Mijandra. I won’t do it. I refuse. I will never compromise my mental health, creative freedom and happiness ever again. Do you see that beautiful man over there who won’t take his eyes off me?”

“Yes, I noticed the way that he stares. Does he think that I might do something to hurt you…

“No, but he is very protective of me. I walked away from him once to fulfill a dream. That dream has been recognized at the expense of everyone that I hold dear. It’s my time to move on…without Greg and without Mijandra. I am trading it all in for someone that I lost long ago. I’m trading it all in for Maria. First and foremost, Maria is who I am. Maria is who Michael loves and deserves for waiting for me for so long.”

“And you love him. I can see that.”

“With my whole heart and you should also see that I’m telling you the truth.”

“What happens now?”

“All I want is a divorce. The rest is inconsequential to me.”

“I don’t understand why Greg would lead me to believe that you wouldn’t give him the divorce.”

“I can’t say Sharon because I don’t know. Ours was a marriage of convenience. We never loved each other. I don’t know what kind of relationship he has with you..I just…I guess I just don’t want you to think that we sleep together because we don’t. I honestly can’t remember the last time we were (pauses and glances at Michael) intimate. (Michael looked physically ill then straightened his smirk when he caught Maria looking at him)

“This may sound stupid, but I truly believe that he loves me. Even in spite of the lies that he has told. I know it because of the way that he makes me feel when we are together. That can’t be faked; and neither can the fact that I am pregnant with his child…a child that he has always told me that he wanted. Please…don’t ok? I knew very well what I was doing from the beginning. I’ve loved him for so many years. We went to college together and back then we were dating exclusively. This was before the fortune and fame. I loved plain ole’ Gregory Malone, the man with big dreams. I got a job right out of college that took me out of the country. He promised to wait for me. I suppose that was around the time that he signed you. We were always in contact. He would book shows for you in Amsterdam so he could see me. I read about your marriage in a magazine. Greg confirmed what I speculated and that was that the marriage was for convenience and a publicity stunt. To me, in a sense you were sort of like the other woman even though you have the license and the ring. My job transferred me back here right before he bought the house…

Rita and Kyle are approaching…

“A little over two years ago…Oh great!! Coffee. Just what I need.”

Rita – “One ‘Ooo Grande Caramel Mach’ with extra mel and two ditto’s one with extra kick.”

Maria – “Thinking about getting a job at Starbucks?” (She smiles)

Rita – “It sounded better when the guy behind the counter said it. Here you go Michael. You look like you could really use it.”

“Thanks. You got sandwiches too?”

Kyle – “Yeah. We figured that we better be prepared because we don’t know how long we will be here.”

Sharon – “Thank you all for the coffee and the food. I really appreciate it. Since I’m here for the duration, you don’t have to stay. Really. This situation is more than a little uncomfortable for all of us.”

Maria – “I agree, but we don’t want to leave you here to wait alone.”

Sharon – “I am ok. I have a book here to occupy my time.”

“If you’re sure that there is nothing we can do to help we’ll go. Michael isn’t feeling well and I would like to take him back to the hotel.”

“Please do. I insist.”

“Here are Greg’s medical forms. You would be best equipped to fill them out any way.”

“You’re probably right.”

“Let us know how he is?”

“As soon as I find out. Now I’m going to sit here and use this free time to come up with a plan. Either Greg wants me and wants to be with me or he doesn’t. One thing is definite. I’m not waiting around any more. He will give me an answer. I will know one way or the other before I leave this place.”

“You know Sharon, you have been living with him for two years. Maybe you should contact someone who can advise you of your rights. You have to have some rights…maybe as a common law wife.”

“I don’t know of anyone.”

“I do. Before you say no, just consider him. Jesse Ramirez. Even if you don’t retain him, he can give you some good advice. If after that you still don’t want his services he will refer you to someone.”

“I don’t know…

“Just call him. What have you got to lose?”

(She thought about it for a minute) “What’s his number?”

“Do you have a cell?”

“Yeah.”

“Let’s just program it in. No chance of losing it that way.”

Rita – “Maria, Kyle and I are going down to hail a cab. It was nice to have met you Sharon. I hope that everything works out for you.”

Rita and Kyle left and Maria and Michael followed after Maria programmed hers and Jesse’s numbers into Sharon’s cell phone. Upon arrival at the hotel Kyle and Rita excused themselves for a hot shower and sleep. Michael was very tired but he wanted to shower before he went to bed. Maria ran him a hot bath instead so she could put in her special blend of bath salts to help relax away his fatigue.

She sat behind him and started a slow massage from his scalp, down his neck then his shoulders and back.

He sighed his approval then lay back so that the back of his neck was cradled in the juncture between her thighs. In a gesture as common as breathing she smoothed the hair back that had fallen across his forehead.

“Michael?”

“Yeah baby?”

“Are you ok, I mean really?”

“I’m fine Ree. Don’t worry ok? I’m just really tired.”

“Ok Michael. How does this feel?”

“It feels wonderful but if you keep that up, I’ll be asleep in no time. (pause) I need you to know something…

“What is it?”

“I didn’t heal Greg completely.”

“I know Michael and I know why. (She smiled) You did a very good thing Michael. Greg is lucky that you helped him at all, especially after he threatened you. I think that you are wonderful.”

“No, I’m not. I didn’t want him to die, but I was hesitant to help him. I did it for you.”

“Yeah, I know that too.”

“I saw it.”

“Saw what?”

“I saw what Greg was doing before and during the attack.”

“You wanna talk about it?”

“Uumhumm…(He paused) He saw us in the club tonight. He sat in the back and listened to you sing. He smirked at us. He truly believes that we were seeing each other before we met in Georgia. He left before you finished your set. While he walked, he made a call to his shiesty lawyer to find out about the days events. He knows that Sharon signed a statement regarding their relationship. He made plans to meet with him in the morning to go over other options. He didn’t realize how far he had walked while he was on the phone. He decided to get some money from an ATM and catch a cab home. He found a machine a few blocks away. He was thinking of what he would tell Sharon while he made his withdrawal. Two guys were standing in the shadows watching him. He heard a noise behind him and he panicked when he saw them. He couldn’t get his phone out quick enough to call for help so he started running. Luck wasn’t with him. He ran the wrong way and they cornered him. Baby, it was awful.”

(She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up) “Did you…did you feel it Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Oh no… Michael (She sounded like she wanted to cry. She gently pushed him forward and slid down behind him fully clothed to wrap him in her embrace)…

(He sighed and leaned into her embrace) “Only in moderation baby. If I had felt it full force I know that I wouldn’t have been able to help him as much as I did. He is an evil bastard, but I wouldn’t wish a beating like that on anyone. They took everything. One of them put in a few extra kicks because the cell phone was broken. That’s when he lost the tooth.”

“All that happened on that busy street and no one saw anything?”

“No. It happened on the other side of the fence. Greg crawled through a hole and he lost consciousness before he could get passed the boxes.”

“I’m sorry. I should never have asked you to…

“No Maria, it’s ok. You were right. I had to do it because I couldn’t watch him die.”

“That’s because you are a man of honor Michael Guerin. Have I told you lately that I love you?”

“No, I don’t believe you have, not since last night. (Turning his upper torso so he could see her face) I think I’m feeling neglected.”

“We can’t have that now, can we? (She is soaping a sponge with liquid soap) Let’s see what I can do to help. Now, where exactly are you feeling neglected?”

“My whole body is achy and my lips…yeah, that’s a good place to start.”

“How about I start back here and work my way around?”

Maria bathed Michael thoroughly and lovingly, back and front and all spots in between. She had him stand so she could dry him then wrapped him in a robe and sent him to the bedroom while she stripped out of her wet clothing and took a quick shower. She dressed for bed and met him in the room.

“Ok Michael, get comfortable because it’s time that I paid those lips of yours some attention.”

The next morning…

Michael was sleeping in. Maria couldn’t bare to wake him. His newly discovered ability really drained him. After kissing him soundly the night before, she massaged him to a deep sleep. Maria was sitting on the sofa making bar b que notes for Liz when Rita joined her…

“What’s up?”

“Mornin’. Not much, I’m just making notes for Liz. Jesse called. We’ve been placed on hiatus because of the severity of Greg’s injuries. He’s advised me to go back to Roswell until further notice.”

“Maria…

“I have to believe that it will be ok Rita. Jesse says that I should just live my life. How am I supposed to leave a pending divorce up in the air? Greg’s been doing whatever he hell he wants to do for the past two years and maybe more. Hell, he’s having a baby. What am I doing? Living miserably while I selfishly ask the man that I love to hold off on the affection because I believe it’s the right thing to do. This is so wrong Rita. I just don’t know which direction to go anymore.”

“If Michael loves you enough to want to wait with you, what’s the problem?”

“I know that he does and I know that he will but the problem is he shouldn’t have to and neither should I. No…I promised myself that I wouldn’t do this. I’m not going to start feeling sorry for myself. I just have to get back to the task at hand. I have plans to make. Jim called a little while ago. He and my mom will be back in Roswell tomorrow night.”

“What do you want to do? Should we start packing?”

“Not just yet. We have some shopping to do. I already placed a call to the Captain. He’s checking the itinerary. We will more than likely be flying out tonight. I don’t want to be here one minute longer than we have to be. Do you think Kyle will want to tag along?”

“Shopping? You are kidding, right?”

“Just thought I’d ask. Meet back here in forty five minutes.”

Kyle was awake when the girls left the hotel. Maria asked him to ask Michael to eat something if he woke before she returned. She left Michael a note then she and Rita left to conquer the shopping centers.

Sharon called Maria two and a half hours into the shopping spree so they decided to stop by the hospital. When they arrived they met Sharon at Greg’s room door…

“Hello Maria, Rita.”

(A simultaneous) “Hello Sharon.”

Maria – “So, how is he?”

Sharon – “Well, he’s pretty banged up but I’m told that he will be ok after he’s healed. He is looking at months of recovery though. He has a dislocated kneecap, three broken ribs, two broken fingers and a sprained wrist, and a broken jaw. They had to wire it shut. I had the advantage because he had to listen without interrupting. He’s also looking at extensive dental work. On top of missing a tooth, several of the surrounding teeth are chipped. He got stitches from the knife wounds in his chest and side.”

Maria – “Damn.”

Sharon – “Yeah, I guess it could have been a lot worse. Things happen for a reason. He’s causing you grief and you all saved his life. How is that for irony? Thank you for saving him by the way, you know, if I didn’t say it before. I don’t know what will happen, but he needs to think about the choices that he’s made lately and do something to make them right. Fortunately, he will have plenty of time to do so. He knows that when he is discharged I won’t be at the house waiting for him. It was with great difficulty that he asked, “Who’s gonna take care of me?” I almost cried when I told him that I didn’t know and it wouldn’t be me. Before I left the room I let him in on my little secret. He knows that he’s going to be a father and he knows that if he doesn’t do something to fix all this mess that he set in motion, he won’t ever see either of us. He wasn’t happy to find out that I’ve made your acquaintance and that I know what he is doing to you.

I spoke to Mr. Ramirez. He gave me some very good advice. He’s even had some legal papers drawn up concerning our common law type situation. Greg knows now that I mean business. This should be the happiest time in my life but It’s not because I don’t know what will happen. I do know this though, I will be ok even if I have to raise my baby alone. You know, I think I’m gonna get outta here. I know myself when it comes to Greg and the longer I stick around the more compelled I will be to go to him and tell him anything he wants to hear.”

Maria – “We are just going to look in on him before we go. We are flying home tonight so If we don’t see you before we go…

Sharon – “I know. (quick hug) Take as much time with him as you need. It was nice to have met you both. I wish that the circumstances had been different.”

She hurried away before they could respond.

Rita – “Maybe this is what Greg needs. You ready?”

Maria – No, but let’s go.”

They entered Greg’s room and he was hooked up to monitors and bandaged around his chest, rib area and hand. His face was swollen, black and blue and one leg was in traction. He spoke with difficulty…

“What are you doing here?”

Maria – “I came to say goodbye and to wish you well.”

“Why?”

“Because in spite of what you are doing to me, we used to be friends. I am human and I don’t like to see you or anyone in pain.”

“Majandra, I…

“Maria Greg, my name is Maria and we have nothing else to discuss unless you are going to tell me that you will stop trying to dictate my life and sign the papers. (long pause) Yeah. Just as I thought. Have a nice life Greg. Rita, I am going to call a cab. I’ll see you downstairs.”

“Ok, I’ll be out soon. (Maria left the room) Well Mr. Malone, we meet again.”

“Hello Rita. Thank you for coming to see me.. You are probably the only friend that I have.”

“I used to believe that we were friends but all your actions are to the contrary, even though they aren’t against me.”

“So you hate me too?”

“I don’t hate you Greg and I don’t think the others do either but I can say with honesty and certainty that no one likes what you are doing.”

“This is about business Rita…

“No Greg, It’s about greed and the need to control Maria’s life. You’ve harbored a secret life for more than two years. Now you are punishing Maria because she wants to be happy too.”

“I’m not trying to punish her.”

“Then what are you doing? (No answer) I remember not long ago, you asked me to help you. Was everything you said to me a lie? Because I honestly thought you were sincere.”

“I don’t know what to say to you.”

“Don’t say anything, just listen please? I don’t know what drives you or what you are passionate about. For Maria, it’s Michael and because of that she’s trying to do the right thing. He’s an honorable man Greg, but I don’t have to tell you that because you know it. You might not be here right now if he wasn’t. You should know that we spoke to Sharon before she left the hospital…

“She really left?”

“Yes she did. We know that she’s given you an ultimatum. Maybe you should use your down time to reevaluate your life and think about what’s most important to you. Are you willing to risk losing the one woman who would stick with you through anything? What about your innocent child Greg? Things would be so different if you and Maria really loved each other. You still wouldn’t be justified in claiming mental cruelty and the other untruths because she’s done nothing but stay bound to a contract that she wanted out of long ago. Now she has met your common law wife who is pregnant with your child. What do you think the judge will say about that? That’s just something else for you to think about.

I’m going go. Our cab is probably waiting. Take care Greg and remember, it’s not too late for you to do the right thing.”

When Rita left the building, Maria was waiting in the cab. They stopped for food then headed back to the hotel to feed the guys. Michael was just waking when they arrived.

They sat together and ate then Maria faxed her notes to Liz. They were scheduled to leave that night at nine. It was after four so they started packing. The girls didn’t have enough room for all their things so after shoving things in Kyle and Michael’s cases, they needed one more so they were off to the mall again. They came back with two cases and more stuff to fill them. Michael and Kyle shared an incredulous look with one another and did what they thought they should do and that was offer their assistance.

The group packed up, checked out and headed to the airport. There was a slight delay because of scheduling discrepancies, but they made their destination without incident. Max met them at the airport. He dropped the girls at Maria’s moms and the guy’s at Kyle’s. They were all going in separate directions the next day.

The next morning Liz and Iz picked up Maria and Rita and they went on a secret mission that the guys knew nothing about.

Kyle and Michael met Max at the butcher’s to pick up a meat order for the bar b que and store it in the Crash Down refrigerator. The guys, armed with a list from Liz, picked up all the sodas and mixes for tropical fruity drinks. There was an order waiting for them at Party City. When they saw how much stuff they had to pick up, they were glad that they had come in two cars

The girls were across town at the spa getting pampered. They were receiving the full treatment. Mud wraps, scrubs, facials, manicures, pedicures and hair dos.

Maria and Rita filled Liz and Iz in on the New York happenings. After leaving the spa, they drove one town over to a car dealership. Maria leased a new SUV. She and Michael needed to be able to get around with out relying on their friends until they decided what they would do about their living situation. Michael’s motorcycle was still broken and stored in her garage in Georgia.

The girls had an early dinner then met the guys at Liz and Max’s place. They all sat around laughing and talking until it was time for Maria and Michael to surprise Jim and Amy at the airport. Maria was unusually quiet on the way there…

“You ok baby?”

“I think I’m just a little nervous. I haven’t seen mom in so long. What if she doesn’t want to see me?”

“Don’t be silly Maria. Of course she wants to see you. Hey…(He reached for her hand and kissed it) it’s gonna be ok. You and your mom will have a lot to talk about. It’s not too late for me to stay with Max or Iz…

“No, please. I want you with me. Rita already took off to stay in Kyle’s guest room or so she says. I’m just kidding. Morally, Rita is unshakable. I think we could all learn something from her.”

“You are right about that.”

“I am so happy that they met each other. They seem so happy.”

“Kyle is like a kid in a candy store.”

“Michael, what do you think we should do about our living situation?”

“You don’t have a situation, I do and it’s easily remedied. I can get a hotel. Your mom will want you to stay with her.”

“I don’t want to be without you anymore. Even if I stay with her sometimes.”

“What do you want to do?”

“I think we should rent a place.”

“Whatever you want.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Will you travel with me when I go to LA to finish recording?”

“Only if you travel with me when I go to Vermont to paint my next series.”

“Deal.”

“Did I tell you how much I love this SUV?”

“I’m glad that you do because you will be driving it for the duration.”

“You’re giving me carte blanche? I might not give it back.”

“That’s ok as long as you take me where I need to go and that will probably be where ever you are going.”

“Promise?”

They arrived at the airport and went to the waiting area. The flight was scheduled to land on time. Meanwhile, on the plane…

“Amy honey, what’s wrong?”

“I’m not quite sure…you know the feeling you get when something big is going to happen? Well that’s how I feel. I’m glad to be going home. Jim?”

“What is it?”

“I miss my baby. I want to see her. Too much time has passed. She is almost like a distant memory and I don’t like that. It’s like she’s a figment of my imagination, like I didn’t give birth to her. Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“Promise me that you will help me find my baby. Greg Malone has kept her away from her family long enough. I didn’t want to tell you this but not long ago, I felt as if she was in danger of… dieing. I felt like she was hurting and cold. Then this incredible feeling of warmth came over me and I knew that she was ok. But I’m not Jim. I need to see and hold her.”

“You will honey, soon. I promise. (He hugged her)

The Captain announced that the plane was making it’s decent and the passengers should buckle up. After the plane landed and they were cleared to disembark, Amy and Jim let the others go first because they didn’t want to get caught up in the shuffle of people trying to hurry off the plane.

Maria and Michael were standing back out of the way of the passengers holding a sign that read

DeLuca-Valente…

“I’m so nervous Michael.”

“Don’t be. I have it on good authority that your mom will be ecstatic to see you.” (He kissed her)

“Do you know something that I don’t?”

“No, I’m just smart.”

Amy and Jim were the last to leave the plane. As they came through the doors, Amy was looking down at the lose strap on her shoe and Jim made eye contact with Michael and Maria and smiled.

“Honey, does that sign say DeLuca-Valente?”

“What sign Jim?”

She looked up into the teary eyes of her daughter…

(Spoken on a whisper) “Maria?…(A look of confusion graced her face then she smiled and shouted) Maria!!”

Amy dropped everything that she was holding and took off running across the waiting area. Maria met her half way. They were both crying as they embraced and sank down to the floor.

Hello everyone.
I am finally back with my last update.
I planned for there to be two more but when I started writing
the story took on it's own shape.

Thank you so much Beth for letting me borrow your baby.
I loved adding to what you penned and I hope that I did it justice.

I can't express how much I appreciate your continued support...

Because of you, I want to write.

~C~, forever in my heart

Amy dropped everything that was holding and took off running across the waiting area. Maria met her half way. They were both crying as hey embraced and sank down to the floor.

“Am I dreaming? I must be dreaming. If I am, please don’t wake me.”

“You’re not dreaming mom, it’s really me. I’m home to stay if you’ll have me.”

“If I’ll have you? You’re kidding right? I’ve wanted you home since you left. My baby…let me look at you.”

They pulled back and wiped each others tears.

“Oh mom, I’m so happy to see you. I missed you so much that it hurt.”

“Me too baby, me too. (Amy looked up into the eyes of Michael) Michael? Is that you?”

“Yes Ms. DeLuca. It’s good to see you again.”

“Are you the person whom I should thank for bringing my baby home?”

“Only in a round about sort of way.”

“Let’s get out of here mom and we’ll tell you all about it.”

The group went to retrieve Amy and Jim’s luggage then loaded it into the SUV. They decided to go to Celeste’s Diner because Amy was hungry.

They placed an order at the counter and chose a booth in back away from the crowd where they would be undisturbed. After they had been served, Amy wasted no time trying to get every little detail…

“There were things about Greg Malone that I didn’t like. I always had this disturbing feeling about him. Has he ever hurt you Maria? (Pause) Maria…

“Mom, just listen. (I reached across the table to hold my moms hands) Our marriage was one of convenience. When I wasn’t touring, I was home ands most of the time I was alone. In my heart, I wanted out of the arrangement for a long time. Pride and fear kept me away. I had been away from home for so long that I didn’t think I had one to come back to. I didn’t realize it until later, but that’s how Greg wanted it.

I started laying tracks of my own music, so that occupied a lot of my time. See, Greg wouldn’t let me exercise my creative freedom so when he was away which was most of the time I started doing my own thing. After my last trip to California – that’s where my home studio is – I went back to the main house in Georgia to pick up a car that I ordered.

The weather was wretched and I ran out of a few things at the house so I visited a few convenience stores. All the local stores were out of milk. I was having a heated discussion about it with the store clerk. He went to the back to see if the store had milk of any kind. While I waited, someone spoke my name. I turned around confused because no one calls me Maria anymore. Well, no one in the industry. I was looking into the eyes of a man that I didn’t recognize but after a moment I knew.

The meeting was awkward. We sat in m car and talked for a while then we said goodbye and took off in opposite directions. After he was out of my sight I knew that it wasn’t right. I think that realization hit u at the same time because we both turned around mom. I was traveling in the direction that I thought he went when I saw him on his motorcycle in the distance coming towards me. The only thing I was sure of was I had to see him again.

My heart was racing. I was smiling and picturing him smiling back when I saw something that will forever be burned in my memories. (I let go of one of my moms hands and took one of Michael’s) A car came out of nowhere and I sat paralyzed as I watched it make contact with the side of Michael’s bike. The impact sent him airborne.”

Amy gasped.

“Michael landed in a ditch and the bastard that hit him kept going. We were basically in the middle of nowhere. There was no time to wait for an ambulance. I was out of my car and down in that ditch as fast as my feet would take me. I was screaming for help when two guys in a rig pulled over top offer assistance. They put Michael in my car and hauled his broken bike to my house.

He was unconscious and I was scared. A doctor friend met us there. He helped Michael as much as he could which wasn’t too much. He was in so much pain that I took the first step. I swallowed my pride, called Max and we flew to Roswell.”

Amy – “So, Max helped you?”

We looked at each other and then at my mom.

Michael – “Yes, but…

Jim – “She knows all about it kids. I had to be able to explain the reason for calling Max when Ann was dieing. The truth was my only recourse.”

Amy – Thank goodness that you are ok Michael, but Maria…what happened to you?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…not long ago, I felt something. It was really strong and if I’m not mistaken baby I’d swear that I felt you dieing.”

“But…how…

“What the hell do you mean, ‘but how’? It’s true? Oh my God!”

Michael looked at me and I nodded for him to continue. He knew that I wouldn’t be able to speak about it.

“Greg followed Ria to Roswell. They had a meeting at her hotel suite where she told him that she wanted a divorce. He wouldn’t hear it. She asked him to leave, and…and (He hesitated. I could see that he wasn’t able to speak of it either) Amy, this is more difficult than I thought to talk about. Please, take my hand and see my memories."

I let go of his hand because I didn’t think that I could bare to see myself dieing in his arms. It would be hard enough for him and my mom. In a sense, Michael would be reliving it. I kissed him softly then turned to watch for anyone who might be looking. Michael held one of my mom’s hands and she held one of Jim’s.

In a matter of seconds they knew. Michael let them see what he feels is the most important thing that he has done in his life. Truth is, I owe him my life. It’s his.

My mom was in tears and Jim was speechless. My mom stood and walked around the booth. She made Michael stand so she could embrace him.

“I love you Michael Guerin. I love you like I gave you life. Thank you for saving my baby. Thank you for loving my baby.”

My mom reached up and gently wiped the tear that was making a trail down Michael’s cheek, then kissed him softly. It was a mother’s kiss of love and appreciation.

“Come on, let’s go home.”

“Baby, you and your mom have a lot of catching up to do so if you don’t mind, you can drop me…

“Nonsense Michael. We are a family, all of us and we are going home – together. Now the first thing on the agenda is to get my baby divorced because if you two are sleeping in the same bed you are damned well gonna marry her.”

“Mom!”

“Amy, we do share a bed but not in the biblical sense. I promise. I have to have her beside me because I can’t tolerate being away from her for a second. I just found her and I won’t let her go. Never. You are right about us getting her divorced because I want nothing more than to marry her.”

Amy – “Good. We’ll get it done. This will save you from getting the newspaper.” (She smiled)

Michael and Jim sat in front while I snuggled in the backseat with my mom so we could start catching up. We had a lot to talk about and we did – well into the early morning.

When we arrived at my moms she and I dressed for bed, made hot chocolate and snuggled on the couch. Michael and Jim had been asleep for hours when we finally turned in.

I love the way that Michael senses my presence. Even while sleeping.

I was being as careful as possible when I eased into bed and under the covers. He reached for me immediately, pulled me close and buried his face in my hair. I love that.

“You took too long. I was missing you.”

“I’m here now.”

“I love you Maria.”

“I love you Michael.”

The next day:

Michael woke me and the most delicious smells were coming from the kitchen. He and Jim had made us brunch. It was afternoon after all. They let us sleep in.

After they fed us my mom went to take a shower.

“Jim, do you think you can keep my mom occupied today or should I do it?”

“Maybe you should. Take her shopping or something and Michael and I will take care of things on this end. Kyle and Max have set up the portable stage for the band in the back yard. Everything else is pretty much taken care of.”

“Michael, did you and the guys get everything yesterday?”

“Yeah, we got everything on the list that you gave us. What about you and the girls?”
”What about us?”

“Did you get everything on your list?”

“Oh…yeah. We got everything.”

“Baby, I’m curious. What exactly was left for you and the girls to pick up? Because the guys and I had all the meat, the party supplies, the drinks…

“Uhm…you know, stuff. Then don’t forget that we had to drive over to the next town to get the SUV.”

“You look guilty baby. Gorgeous, but guilty.”

I took that opportunity to kiss him.

“I love you.”

“I love you too, but you’re guilty.”

Jim was standing in the corner laughing and soon after, Michael and I had joined him. That’s how my mom found us.

“What did I miss?”

“Nothing. Michael is just being a man. Mom, let’s go shopping!”

“Let’s! You guys want to join us?”

Simultaneous – ‘No thanks!’

“What ever. Do you mind if the girls tag along?”

“Of course not. Girl’s day out will be fun. What are you guys going to do to occupy your time?”

Jim – “Oh, we’ll think of something. Isn’t there a game on today Michael?”

“Yeah, I think there is. Maybe Kyle, Max and Jesse will join us.”

“That’s a good idea. Let’s head on over. We can stop at the store for some drinks and chips and stuff. Why don’t you ladies meet us at my place when you are done. We’ll throw some steaks on the grill for dinner.”

Amy – “Sounds good.”

Jim – “Great. Ok, so the game should be wrapped up around… six-ish. I’ll see you later honey.”

Amy - “I’ll walk you out.”

My mom and Jim left the kitchen and Michael pulled me into his arms.

“Almost a whole day away from you. I don’t know if I can do it.”

“It will only be a few hours. I’ll keep my mom away until about six thirty. I want you and Jim to go to Alex’s parents house and invite them, ok? It’s important to me that they be there. I picked up this invite yesterday and I’m glad that I did since I won’t be able to invite them personally. I wrote a little note too. The Parkers and Jesse’s parent’s are coming, and the Evan’s. This should be really fun.”

“Relaxed looks good on you. I think you’re right. Fun is what we need right now. Just hurry and come home.”

“Ok.”

We were involved in a serious lip lock when my mom came back into the kitchen. We didn’t notice her until she swatted Michael on the leg with a rolled up newspaper.

Amy – “For old times sake.”

“That’s my cue to leave. Love you baby.” (Another quick kiss)

“Love you too.”

“Bye Ms. DeLuca.”

“Michael, please call me mom.”

“Mom…I think I like that.” (He kissed her on the cheek and left the house smiling)

Mom put her kitchen back in order while I went to shower and dress. I called the girls to ask if they would join us. They were happy to and I was glad that Jim and Michael took my mom’s car and left us the SUV or we would have had to take two cars.

I told my mom about Michael’s ex-wife when we were on the way to pick her up. Mom loved her immediately after meeting her. We picked Iz up next and Liz last. She looked really tired. We asked if she was sure that she wanted to go. She said that she could not be cooped up in her house or she would go crazy. We decided to take it easy and do another day of pampering.

We were relaxing while getting facials when Rita asked how we felt about her staying in Roswell. Of course we were all happy. Max’s assistant resigned because she’s getting married. Rita works in the medical field so she was the obvious choice. Max had given her a couple of days to think about it. We asked what there was to think about. She was dating Kyle and we – her sisters were there. The rest of her family was just a few hours away. She was excited because if she moved to Roswell she wouldn’t feel out of place. We all get along and she and Kyle really wanted to see where the dating thing would take them. She knew that it wouldn’t last if they tried a long distance relationship. She was positive that she would accept Max’s offer, but she wanted our input. Now, she had to tell Kyle and we all knew what his reaction would be.

Things seemed to be falling into place for everyone but me. I started to wonder how long I would have to suffer for past indiscretions. I was genuinely happy for all of my friends and my mom. I took comfort in the fact that Michael was where I could reach out and touch him, but I wanted us to have all of each other. I started contemplating re-signing for another year of Majandra Then I mentally chastised myself. There was no way that I would take two steps back and conform to this preconceived principle that Greg had invented for me. I was better than that. Much better. I would continue to fight. Not only for myself, but for Michael because he risked his life to save mine with out so much as a second thought. No, I had to believe that things were happening this way for a reason and I had to be strong enough to tuff it out. I had the best support that anyone could ask for.

We left the spa and went to a small dress shop for outfits for the night. As far as my mom was concerned, the family was having a bar b que dinner in Jim’s backyard. We all wanted to look pretty for our guys. When we finished we were dressed quite comfortably in backyard wear. Michael called on the cell to say that everything had been set up and some of the meat was cooking. He and Jim had invited the Whitman’s and they came right over to offer their services. When Mrs. Parker and Evan’s found out that Mrs. Whitman was there with a house full of guys they came right over. The women were inside making potato salad and some other stuff. Everyone was there except the woman of the hour. The men were sitting on the back patio watching a game while they took turns watching the meat and Max and Liz’s children. The band was on the way over and they were bringing their wives and significant others. Michael sneaked away because he wanted to hear my voice.

I promised him that we would be there within the hour. Truth was I couldn’t wait to put my arms around him.

Roughly half an hour later, Liz was hungry so we headed over to Jim’s. My mom knew right away that something was up because she could hear the Kit Shickers in full swing.

“What did you do Maria?”

“Why did it have to be me?”

“Because it was, now what did you do?”

“I’m home and I wanted to have a family get together. The Whitman’s are here and the Evans and Parker’s and Jesse’s parents are supposed to come. This is a time of celebration for all of us.”

“Thank you baby. That sounds like fun. (She hugged me) Come on, let’s get back there before the guys burn the food.”

The party was in full swing. Everyone seemed to really be enjoying
themselves. Iz was doing what she does best – taking millions of pictures and we were all running away from her. I was in my element. I was home with the people that I love and it felt wonderful. I didn’t even mind that Jim requested that I sing My Funny Valentine for he and my mom to dance to right before he formally proposed.

He got down on one knee and the whole romantic package. She said yes and all the women there were in tears. The band started taking requests. No one noticed that Iz had set up a video camera until we heard her griping that Jesse was standing in front of the lense. Michael was mixing drinks and I was playing his bar maid. It was getting late. Massive quantities of food had been consumed and the party was winding down so they asked me back on stage. I called for a moment of silence and we toasted Alex.

“I would like to take a moment honor and appreciate one of us…though not here physically, you are always with us. Alex. Best friend, confidant and one hundred percent good guy. You were without a doubt the best of all of us. We miss you and we love you. (I raised my glass) To Alex.”

The Group – ‘To Alex’.

It was bittersweet but his parents appreciated the fact that he is never far from our memory. After we composed ourselves, I started singing my rendition of Billy Holiday’s ‘I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good’. Michael is on stage with his arms wrapped around me from behind and actually swaying to the music with me. (I know, I’m shocked too but it was wonderful to be in his arms) He had ulterior motives. He was placing the sweetest butterfly kisses on my neck and shoulders. I leaned into him and got lost in the sensations. Liz asked Max to dance one last dance with her then she wanted to go home to lay down. I was half way through the song when Liz’s water broke. What a way to end a party. We were all so excited. Mr. Evans took his grand children home while Mrs. Evans rode with Max and Liz to the hospital.

My mom and Jim sent us to the hospital while they stayed to shut down the party and clean up. The perfect ending to the perfect evening was the healthy birth of little Alexander Evans.

Time was moving quickly. Three months had passed right before our eyes. Sharon had been giving me regular updates on Greg’s progress. He was in rehab and having a pretty tough time. They were still living apart, but they were seeing each other and trying to work out an amicable agreement where she and the baby are concerned.

Rita took the job with Max and she loves it. She and Kyle are crazy in love and she got her first apartment with the help of me and Iz and protests from Kyle. He wanted her to move in with him but she stood her ground. They are so cute. If she isn’t at his place, he is at hers. If she moved in with him she would save some rent money.

My mom and Jim are blissfully happy. After accepting the proposal she moved in with Jim. I am now the proud owner of my childhood home and that called for a major project. I started renovating. Michael was a big help because he was able to sketch my ideas.

I dreamed of how I wanted it to be…two stories, bricks, picket fence, bay windows – I was revamping the basement and making it into a sound proof home recording studio.

I wanted the attic large and airy with lots of light for Michael’s studio.

The zoners had been contacted. After they came out and we established how far I could extend up and out, I moved forward with my plan of action.

Michael and I were able to stay in the house until they started knocking down walls. When we had to leave we got a one room suite at the Hyatt. We weren’t there much because we were traveling back and forth from California to Vermont. Michael’s creative juices were flowing. He was painting like a mad man. Honestly, it was more than likely because we were both so sexually frustrated that being creative was our only outlet. My album was almost complete. It would definitely be ready when my contract was up with Majandra in three months. I couldn’t wait.

I had two last commitments to honor before my obligation to Majandra and Greg’s label was fulfilled. All that was left was a two night gig in Amsterdam and a month around the states that would start in New York and end in California. I’d average two or three shows a week depending on how large the city was. I love to perform for people. I would enjoy it more if I was doing my own stuff, but Michael was traveling with me so that was my silver lining.

We kept ourselves busy while my life was on hold. Our dream unions became more frequent and we could sometimes call them at will. On top of being more frequent, they were also more…I don’t know what to call them. Before they seemed premonitory but they changed. There was no plot or scenario. They were all about us. Michael and I wanting to satisfy each other, and doing what ever we could to do so. The dreams weren’t masochistic but they were sometimes frenzied and the sessions would go on and on to the point that we would be physically tired in the real world and sleep afterwards for hours.

Anyone walking into the house during or immediately following would have a definite reaction. They would leave the place horny as hell. It had to be pheromonal but we couldn’t figure it out. We were determined not to give up.

November came and went. I had finished my Amsterdam gig and was preparing for the Coast to Coast Tour. Majandra’s finale. Our home would be finished by the time we returned and I could finally release the long awaited, self entitled ‘Maria’.

The group got together the night before Michael and I were to fly to New York. Collectively, they would try to make at least two shows in the month that we were away. They were all sold out for the first two weeks but that was something that they didn’t have to worry about because they all had Carte Blanche. They would be back stage anyway.

We had a good time laughing and talking at one of the fancy restaurants the next town over. Rita and Kyle announced their engagement. No one was surprised. We knew that it would happen. They planned to get married that next summer but Rita still wouldn’t move in with him. They are so cute. Jim and my mom absolutely love her and her family adores Kyle. They told Rita that though they liked Michael, they knew that they weren’t meant to be because he was too brooding. It was like his essence was missing. After meting me and seeing us together, they knew what it was. They didn’t hesitate to welcome me to their family and let us know that Michael and I would always have a place there.

Family is what it’s all about. Without them I may as well not exist. All that time away from them got me nothing but loneliness and heartache. My actions were directly related to Michael’s misery. I hate that so much. My mother was depressed and that hurts more than anything. I know that we have a strong bond. How else would she feel me dieing?

All this stuff was heavy on my mind as I traveled city to city for my final tour. Michael knew that I was preoccupied and he knew why. He let me vent and yell at him knowing that it wasn’t about him, then he would hold me when I burst into tears and let me cry until I was spent. At night, he would join me on the dream plane where we would make love until we were sated enough to sleep.

We were living mechanically. Touring is a tiring process but my Michael is a real trooper. He followed me to all the practices and autograph signings. He was always there as my personal chaperone and body guard. He joked that I would have to put him on payroll for dealing with hordes of screaming and psychotic fans.

I asked him if he wanted me to pay him for loving me too. He replied, ‘Nah, I’ll do that for free forever’.

We flew home to Roswell Christmas eve so we could spend the next day with the family. We had to fly right back on the twenty sixth for my last two concerts.

The last concert the night of December thirtieth was difficult. I was really emotional because even though the music wasn’t the type that I wanted to do, the people that I sang for appreciated it and they made me a really wealthy woman. I owed them thanks so at the close of the show I addressed them informally.

“Good evening everybody. We have come to the close of the show and I wanted to come out to say a few words to you.

Most of you may not know this, but this was my last tour as Majandra. Standing here looking at all of you and hearing the disappointment is really difficult. I enjoy doing what I do, but I need to express my self in a different way now. Some of you may enjoy it, others may not but I have to do this for me.

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for making this so special for me. Majandra has been a part of my life for twelve years and now it’s time for Maria. Maria is my given name. This is my first step in a new direction and I want to share it with you. This is an original, written by me in appreciation of all of you.”

I went to the side of the stage to get my guitar and Michael kissed me for luck. I chose on of my ballads and while I was expecting the audience to hiss and boo they surprised me by flicking lighters and holding those glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces in the air and swaying with me. The house lights were turned down and the scene was almost ethereal.

The applause was thunderous and I had tears in my eyes because they welcomed and received my music. That was more than I expected. I took my final bow and blew a kiss then exited the stage. Michael was waiting for me with open arms.

We had another surprise waiting for us backstage. The two guys that stopped to help Michael and I on the side of that cold Georgia road were there with their daughters. They flew them there for my last concert and I was honored. I sat with them for a long while chatting and laughing. I signed their shirts and we took lots of pictures. Iz would have been proud. Michael was able to formally thank them for helping us.

Chloe and Zoe were my two favorite fans. They were best friends with rhyming names so they told people that they were paternal twins. They were like night and day. Chloe has dark hair and light eyes and Zoe has blonde hair and dark eyes. I think they have a crush on Michael. They kept looking at him and giggling. I thought it was adorable but he was clearly uncomfortable. I wanted to giggle when they told me that my husband is a fox. I told them that I think so too. Michael discreetly rolled his eyes.

I took the girls contact information and told them that every time I was in their city I would send them a back stage package so they could hang out with me.

Michael stuck around with me a little longer while I signed autographs then we went back to the hotel.

He sent me up to the room while he went to get us some much needed food. I picked up my messages and went to the suite to relax.

I lay across the bed and opened and read the messages one by one. They were mostly well wishes from the family and a confirmation for a press conference taping on New Years eve in New York. Michael and I were flying there the next morning, which just happened to be New Years eve. There were also several messages from Jesse asking that I call him right away. I was dialing his number when I picked up the last envelope. It was thick and kind of heavy.

“Hello.”

“Hey Jesse, It’s Maria. Where are you?”

“I’m waiting for you in New York. Did you get them?”

“Get what?”

“I had a thick envelope hand delivered by currier to you. You haven’t received your messages yet?”

“Yeah, I’m just opening them now.”

“Well, one major point of interest is that thick legal envelope. Please open it now. I’ll hold.”

“Ok.”

I put the phone down and opened the envelope. After unfolding the sheets and reading the top line on the page I started screaming…

“Decree of Dissolution…Decree of Dissolution!”

I fell off the bed trying to pick up the phone.

“Jesse, is this real? Please tell me that this is real!”

“Calm down. It’s real. Greg signed and had them rushed. I’ve gone over every detail with a fine toothed comb. It’s legal and binding. You are free.”

“Listen Jesse, I have to talk fast because I don’t have much time. I need a huge favor. Do you think you can find someone who will marry Michael and I tomorrow?

“Maybe…but what about the family?”

“I have very definite plans for the family. We’ll do the whole formal thing later. I want to marry Michael now.”

“I understand. So this is to be a secret?”

“You haven’t told Iz yet have you?”

“Not yet.”

“Good, now this is what I need…

I quickly outlined my plan for Jesse. I wasn’t going to tell Michael the news until we were on the plane. I had a premonition about that and it would be a real shame to share my news any other way. Jesse would take care of things on his end. He was going to pick up some rings from Anrí for me. I had chosen a set of bands the last time I was there but I didn’t tell the girls.

One more day and Michael Guerin was all mine.

When he arrived we ate a very late dinner together. It was almost impossible for me to contain myself. He kept asking me what was going on and I would say that I was excited about future endeavors.

He accepted that but I think he knew that there was more.

I was on such a natural high that I didn’t think I would be able to sleep. I was fidgety so Michael gave me one of his Alien enhanced massages and I was done.

When I woke it was the next morning my chest was still bare and I was curled up in the arms of the only man that I would let hold me like this.

He looked so gorgeous while sleeping that I didn’t want to wake him, but we had to get moving.

We showered and packed and headed to the airport to catch a quick breakfast in the restaurant.

The jet was fueled and ready to go when we boarded. No delays.

We chose the double lounger and a blanket to share. There was no crew because I requested it. I really didn’t want to be disturbed. We sat and made idle chatter until the plane had been flying for about half an hour. I reached into my purse and presented Michael with an envelope wrapped with a ribbon.

“I am feeling the weirdest sense of déjà vu, but what's this?” He asked, and I winked at him and smiled mischievously and didn’t answer.

“Maria, what's this?” He asked again, and I slid over and straddled his lap. “Maria...

I stopped him mid phrase with one delicate finger on his lips and a soft ‘shhh’ from mine. I leaned slightly forward and whispered,

“This is the one thing that will make our greatest dream come true.”

Then I kissed him.

This was no ordinary kiss. It was one that spoke of love, want, longing, hunger, need, passion,
lust - damn, all of the above. It spoke of me being exclusively his, and him exclusively mine. There were some definite sparks between us but I pulled away. I said simply,

“Open it.”

He obliged and pulled out my divorce decree - signed, sealed, delivered.

“I know what you are thinking.”

“Do you?”

“Yes...you are wondering if this is real. Let me assure you Mr. Guerin, it is. It's legal and binding.”

“What shall we do to celebrate? And why do I feel as if we’ve been here before?”

“Have you really forgotten? You don’t remember our flying tryst on the dream plane? Why Michael, that was one of my best performances. And to answer your original question, I was thinking that I would make us members of the mile high club."

A look of realization crossed his gorgeous features and I didn't give him the chance to respond. I disrobed him quickly while he performed the same favor for me. The way we made love was urgent and just on the cusp of primal. That tryst on the dream plane had nothing on this. The real deal is much more than I could have imagined and much more than I remember. Michael is truly skilled in the art of making love. When we finally joined, I thought I would die from the pleasure of having Michael inside me. One thing that was indicative of the dream union was what we were feeling for each other. We were sharing feelings of how much we missed each other and how much we still wanted each other after all the time that had passed. The strongest feeling was of insatiable need. We felt as if we couldn't get close enough. It was ardent and intense. It was such a powerful sensation that it was almost like the real world and the dream plane were incorporated.

This time we were both covered in a sheen of sweat from good old fashioned copulation.
This was definitely beyond the realm of possibility, only because I was afraid to believe that it really happened. My reality was recognized when we quickly became aroused again. Repeat performances are definitely better than the first. It was so worth the wait.

We woke naked, sated, ecstatic, and tangled in a blanket.

“That was without a doubt your best performance.”

“I was just thinking the same of you.”

“I can do better.”

“Is there better?”

“Hell yeah, and I can’t wait to show you.”

”We have forever to do what ever we want.”

“Ria…

“What is it Michael?’

“I don’t want to kill the mood, but we didn’t think about birth control. I would love it if you were pregnant but I kind of want you to be my wife before we have a baby.”

“I’m glad that you brought that up. There is no need to be concerned because we are on our way to get married right now.”

“What?”

“I wanted to surprise you. I can’t wait any longer Michael. Do you want to marry me?”

“Of course.”

“Can we do it today?”

“Baby, what about your mom and the family?”

“I’m making plans for the formal wedding but this is about me and you and the fact that I don’t want to be without you another minute.”

“What else are you keeping from me?”

“Only my lips…

I kissed him and it became heated so fast that we probably would have gone for round three if the captain hadn’t announced the decent. We dressed reluctantly then kissed and snuggled until we landed. We went straight to the hotel to shower and change because we were to meet Jesse and the reverend in an hour. He had taken care of all the legal documentation. All we had to do was give up a little molecularly altered blood of Michael’s and a little bit of my own and sign our license.

The ceremony actually went off with out a hitch. Jesse had picked up the bands and everyone was waiting for us when we got there. In a matter of minutes I was Mrs. Michael Guerin. I was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

We were waiting in one of the courthouse rooms while the press set up for the conference when we got a visit from Greg.

He hobbled in with the help of a cane and asked if it were ok for him to speak to us.

“I won’t take up much of your time. I’m just here to apologize for standing in the way of your happiness. I can see how happy you are and there are no words to express how wrong I was for all the things that I put you through. It took almost losing Sharon and my baby for me to wake up. I am truly sorry Majan…Maria.

A judge owed me a favor so I was able to put a rush on the divorce. Sharon and I saw you get married. She was in tears. She said that it was simple and beautiful. I agree. I wish you nothing but happiness.”

“Thank you Greg. I wish you well.”

“Guerin…Michael, I probably owe you my life. I never said thank you for what you did. I know that it was a dangerous chance that you took and you did it to help me – a man that you despise with reason. I also know why you did it. First, for Maria and second because that’s the kind of person that you are. That’s the kind of person that I aspire to be since I’ve been given a second chance at life.

Your secret is just that. Your secret. If you want to have your lawyer draw something up for me to sign regarding my silence I’ll do it. I honestly have nothing to gain by betraying you. I’m going to concentrate on my physical therapy and my family from now on. Maria, don’t worry about your money. Any royalties will be divided just as they are now but I made an adjustment. Half will go to you. I found out about your accounts only because I had my files personally audited. The accountant quit when she found out that you weren’t coming back. She said that she couldn’t stand working with me. She tried to contact you to tell you, but the only contact information that she had for you is your Georgia and California addresses. I signed over both homes to you. My name has been taken off everything even the jet. I just gave the documents to your lawyer. If you don’t mind, I’d like to clean out my things as soon as possible.”

“Go ahead. Take whatever you like. The only things that I bought were for my bedroom, bath and the guest rooms in Georgia. You have no reason to go to LA. I furnished the whole home.”

“I know and I won’t. I don’t have keys for the LA home anyway.”

“I’ll give you three weeks then I’m going to have the locks changed. Is that enough time for you?”

“Plenty. Well, that’s about it. I was asked to be here for the conference and don’t worry, I won’t put you in a negative light. Be happy Maria, you too Michael.”

Greg extended his hand and Michael accepted it. He wanted to shake my hand too but I hugged him instead.

Jesse came in to tell us that they were ready for us. We stepped outside in front of the court house doors and there was a podium with mic’s set up. The photographers started flashing pictures as soon as we stepped out. I started…

“Hello everyone. We called this press conference today because this is the end of an era. For twelve years I’ve been known as Majandra. I gave my last performance as such on December 30th. I would like to thank all of you who followed me through the years and supported me by buying my records. That is the sad part about not continuing. I feel like I’m letting my fans down. But I hope that you understand that I have to do this for me.

I need to go in a different direction now. Starting with my name. My given name. For those of you who don’t know, It’s Maria.”

Reporter – “Maria, what brought about such a drastic change?”

“I don’t see change as drastic especially if one is making the change to better themselves. This new project of mine has been in the works for quite a while. It’s time.”

Reporter – “What is this new project?”

“It’s a self entitled album in my given name.”

Reporter – “Maria, rumor has it that you have re-married.”

“It’s not a rumor. It is my personal business but since someone has started the gossip, I am married to the most wonderful man in the world. Just so there will be no speculation I will introduce him. His name is Michael.”

I reached for his hand and he looked at me like I would be in trouble later. I smiled and when he stepped up to the podium I kissed him. There was an onslaught of catcalls and flash bulbs going off. I whispered ‘thank you’ in his ear and he actually posed for a few pictures with me.

He truly amazes me sometimes. I found out later that he only did it because he wanted to let the male population know that I am taken.

I stepped away from the podium and Greg took over. Michael and I made our escape.

We went back to the hotel and made love for the first time as husband and wife. There was nothing urgent about it. We took our time. Michael said that he could do better. I will always take him at his word. He loved me so slowly and passionately that I was in tears when I screamed his name. We planned to order dinner but we fell asleep in each others arms.

The ringing phone pulled me from a blissful slumber…

“Yeah…

“Maria DeLuca or should I say Guerin…I saw that press conference. Did you get married without me?”

“Mom…

“Don’t ‘mom’ me. I can’t believe that you would do it with out me.”

“Mom, please listen for a minute. I’m planning a sunset wedding on the beach in California for everybody, ok? I love Michael and when I found out that my divorce was final I didn’t want to wait. He’s waited for me long enough. Can’t you understand that?”

“Yes baby, I do. I still wish that I could have been there. Where is my son? I want to talk to him.”

‘Michael, she wants to talk to you…

“See Maria, I told you that this would happen. Now you have her all angry with me…

I pushed the phone into his hand.

“Hi mom…

“Michael Guerin…welcome to the family.”

“Thank you.”

“When are you coming home?”

“First thing in the morning.”

“Good. Meet us at Jim’s for brunch. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Give me back to Maria.”

“Mom, you yelled at me and not Michael?”

He’s smiling.

“I’m sorry. Come on home. We are having brunch at Jim’s. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

We terminated the call and ordered room service. We were famished. After eating we took a much needed shower and went to bed. The plane was leaving at seven thirty so we had to get up early.

The next day:

We flew back to Roswell and everyone that we know was waiting for us at Jim’s house with gifts and food. The newly engaged Kyle and Rita who are happy as hell. Max and Liz and their three little munchkins, their family is solid. Iz and Jesse – she makes him take pictures now. Poor thing. My mom and Jim - after Michael and I got married without her, she’ll probably elope. The Parker’s, the Evans, the Ramirez’s, even the Whitman’s. We are family and that’s what it’s all about. Family, friends, and a husband who will go the distance with you with out question. In my heart Michael has always been my husband. We found our way back to each other and it was truly the best Reunion. On New Years Day or any other.

Ok, that's the end. I hope you enjoyed it.
I'll be around.
