*In my haste, I forgot to thank the original author - without whom, this story wouldn't be here
Thankx Beth!!
Ok, here we go... this chapter is really long so it has to post in two parts. Sorry. I am almost done with the second half, so I will do what I can to get it posted by the end of the week. Wish me luck!!
After every one had regained some composure, they left the hotel to get some food and to talk about the vision that had them all aroused.
The group went to the Crashdown for some much needed sustenance and bonding time. They had a lot of catching up to do.
Michael and Liz made phone calls to track down Maria’s mom. They learned that at present, she was in Sacramento and in three days, she would be in Albuquerque. She was introducing new Aroma therapy products that she created and meeting with buyers who were interested in carrying the products in their stores. She was picking up supplies in Albuquerque then heading home.
Maria had one week to prepare herself to see her mom.
After everyone had eaten, Maria and Michael left them to go to her childhood home. She walked in and got emotional as she took in her surroundings. Michael sat on the couch and gave her time to reacquaint herself with the home that she had been away from for so many years.
Maria, seeing that the house was in moderate disrepair, felt the need to make some changes. She pulled a note pad from her purse and started writing down things that needed to be changed. All over - inside and out. She planned to re-do everything as a surprise for her mom. She felt that it was the least that she could do after being away for so long.
Michael watched her with a humorous gleam in his eye. He knew that once she set her mind to something, all pedestrians should steer clear.
Maria wanted to call construction workers and have them get started, but Michael being the voice of reason thought she should wait for her mom’s input. Maria liked the idea of she and her mom having a shared project.
Michael let her run around and exhaust herself. When he couldn’t hear her rambling around, he searched her out. He found her and what he saw brought a smile to his lips.
She was curled up on her old bed clutching a
stuffed green alien that she named Michael many years ago, sleeping soundly, or so he thought. He couldn’t resist brushing the hair from her face and placing a kiss on her forehead. He let his hand linger and when he tried to turn and walk away, she grabbed his hand and tugged it until he submitted and obliged her by curling up in bed behind her.
“Where ya goin’?”
“Not far. Just back to the living room. You are tired and you should rest.”
“I will. Nap with me.”
“That’s a great idea. Maybe if we lay here long enough, we might fall into the dream plane again.”
“This mornings session is the reason that I need rejuvenation. It was so very…
“Intense.”
“I’ll say. Uhm… when we are on the dream plane, do you think that we simulate the actual sexual act? I mean, we can’t see ourselves when we are sleeping and…
“You are worried that we gave Max and the girls an eye full.”
“Yes and maybe they were too embarrassed to say anything.”
“Max would have told me, so stop worrying, ok? Besides that, you shouldn’t be embarrassed about this especially since we don’t have control of it.”
“Are you sure about that? Maybe we want each other so badly that we inadvertently cause it on a subconscious level. I have an idea. Help me research this…ok…the first time you were adamant about not sitting on my bed. I thought you might have a coronary by the look on your face.
(she started giggling)
“You would dare make light of my fragile state? That hurts Ria.”
(he feigned distress)
“It’s all in fun baby, it’s all in fun.
(she kissed him softly) Ok, the second time was on the plane. We were relaxed at first, but around the time that I started getting sleepy, I was worrying a little…
“About what Maria?”
“I wanted to get you to Max as quickly as possible, that’s all. I was concerned about you being in pain.”
“Oh, I’m sorry that you had to worry…
“What are you apologizing for? We are part of each other. When I don’t worry is when you should be concerned.”
(she smiled at him)
“Duly noted. Ok, the third was this morning…
“No, we have to count the time that I was dieing.”
“
We were dieing.”
The look on his face was one of absolute solemnity and a chill went through Maria because she understood. She placed her hand gently on his face and he leaned into it and closed his eyes.
“Ok, that’s three, and that time our emotions were off the charts. This morning was number four when we cried together - yeah, we were very emotional. That’s when we saw our babies!”
“The last was the most bizarre because I found myself willing it to happen.”
“Yeah, me too… I had just told you that we couldn’t make love until all the legalities were out of the way. I was really depressed about that, and it led to my melt down…maybe it happens when our emotions are heightened. That has to be it.”
“I think you are right.
(pulling her closer) You are too far away from me. No more talking, let’s take a nap. Your debut is tonight. Are you nervous?”
“Not at all. Michael, when I’m on that stage singing what I want to sing, picturing you standing in front of me, I feel….free.”
Across town at the Crashdown Café…
Max has taken Liz home to rest up so she will be refreshed for Maria’s night. He and Iz are working on the books for the restaurant when Iz hears something that makes her flesh crawl.
Kyle and Fiancée Carol walk into the restaurant and she is verbally abusing him in a sickeningly whiney voice…
“Kyle, what do I have to do to convince you that I hate this greasy spoon?! You never take me anywhere nice…
“Carol, we are only here to pick up lunch for the guys. I called the order in so we only have to be here for two minutes tops.”
“Well, what am I supposed to eat?”
“Carol, I don’t have the time to take you to another place. If I had known that you were going to show up at my job for lunch, I would have made other plans.”
“Haven’t you heard of being spontaneous? I understand, you don’t love me…
Iz is thinking: This chick is certifiable!
Iz interrupts…
“Hey. Kyle, your order is ready, but I need to see you in the back for a minute. I think we got some things mixed up. He’ll only be a moment Carol dear.
(big cheesy grin)
Carol smiled and rolled her eyes. She hated Kyle’s friends as much as they hated her. She couldn’t wait to marry Kyle so she could use her powers of persuasion to make him see that they needed to leave the God forsaken town of Ros-Hell. He was her ticket out and she would do whatever it took to convince him that it was the best decision for them both. She wasn’t too happy about using him the way that she had, but she also knew that he was a means to an end. She had no job, no money, no purpose. She had always gotten by on her looks. She thought of Kyle as an adorable doofus who would do whatever it took to keep her happy. He took very good care of her. She wanted for nothing, but living on a cops salary wouldn’t be enough. Her dreams were bigger. Much bigger and living in Ros-Hell would not do. She was still furious at him because he had been offered the job of a Bounty Hunter by a friend of his fathers and he told him that he would think about it. What was there to think about? A new job out of state that would keep him traveling so she could do what she wanted while he made four times what he makes now. Yeah, she would just have to convince him. He did almost anything that she asked while in the throws of passion. She would just have to put in some overtime. It was a real shame because Kyle would likely make someone a good husband one day, just not her. After she achieved her ultimate goal, she was getting as far away from him as she could. He could have that stinky little alien infested town. She was going to Las Vegas and become a showgirl.
While Carol stood lost in thought, Iz pulled Kyle into the break room…
“I honestly don’t know how you put up with her shit Kyle. You are too good a person for this. She is nothing…
“I know Iz.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I know. I’m not stupid, I’m just a little slow. I know what she is up to and I’m just biding my time until I break it off.”
“Why? She’s not at all worth it.”
“The sex is great.”
“You pig.”
(he smiled) “Give me some credit here Iz. The sex is great but not enough that I would compromise my beliefs. I’m just trying to plan a way to break it off quickly with out a lot of screaming and hysterics.”
“If I may ask, what tipped you off?”
“I found some notes that she’s been keeping. It seems that as soon as I start making some real money, she plans to take enough to make a start in Las Vegas.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“Not at all. Her big dream is to become a show girl.”
It took everything in Isabelle to contain her laughter. When Kyle saw the various shades of red that she was turning, he too felt the need to roll on the floor. Isabelle got a grand idea...
“Kyle, I want you to do me a huge favor. Maria is back in town…
“Maria DeLuca? Does Michael know?”
“Yes. They ran into each other in Georgia…listen, I’ll tell you that story later. I want you to find a reason, any reason, to ditch that psychotic showgirl of yours and meet us at the Hyatt hotel at 7:30. Maria is singing tonight and all her closest friends should be there to help welcome her home.”
“Majandra has come home. Wow! I never thought I’d see this day.”
“She is home and she want’s no parts of Majandra anymore. She isn’t re-signing when her contract is up.”
“You’re serious aren’t you?”
“Deadly, but look, just do me this favor and I’ll fill you in on all the details later.”
“What aren’t you telling me Iz?”
“For crying out loud Kyle, what could I possible be hiding? I swear, men just don’t trust women unless…never mind. We are all like family and we haven’t been together in a long time. Will you just come…
Carol pushed the door open with enough force to make it hit the back wall…
“Come where Kyle?”
“Damn Carol, it’s an innocent door for goodness sake.”
(he looked at Iz) "Mr. Evans needs my help with some repairs around his home. He wants me, Michael and Max to come by so we can go over a few things that need to be done this weekend.”
(her eyes lit up) “So, Michael Guerin’s back in town…
“Yeah.
(Iz couldn’t help but butt in because she knew that Carol had a major crush on Michael) My brother is back and guess what? He and the love of his life ran into each other in Georgia. Trippy isn’t it? You remember Maria DeLuca don’t you Carol? You two had a few classes together in high school. Wait, this should refresh your memory…beautiful petit blonde with sparkling green eyes who for the last ten years or so has been known as the one and only Majandra. Ring a bell? Well anyway, it was the damndest thing, Michael was in an accident. It seems that some fool had the gall to run him off the road. Yeah, the person actually hit him while he was on his motorcycle. The impact sent him airborne and left him crumpled in a ditch, concussed and bleeding. As fate would have it, Maria found him. Is it just me, or would you say that they are Soulmates? Anyway, she took him to her home and nursed him back to health as only she could. Yeah, I would say that my brother has - got - it - bad for her.
(she intentionally paused between each word for effect) She is the only woman that he has ever truly loved with his whole heart. Heck, I can hardly stand to be in the room with them. They always have this look in their eyes like they want to jump each others bones. I mean they absolutely can - not - keep their hands off each other.
(she giggled and smiled) Their hands...their lips...
"Are we done here Kyle?"
"Yes, I believe we are. Let's go. The guys are waiting for this food."
"Don't forget Kyle. 7:30. Dad's expecting you."
"Tell him that I will be there. Carol, you wanna come with hunny? Maybe you could sit with Iz, Maria, Liz and Mrs. Evens while us guys...
"Um, no thanks. I think I'll sit this one out."
"Ok, suit yourself. I didn't want you to feel like I was excluding you. Bye Iz."
(he turned and winked at her)
"Bye bye."
(big grin)
Kyle grabbed the bags of food and he and Carol left the café. Isabelle stood watching them through the window front smiling.
Isabelle is thinking:
Just you wait Kyle. You are not gonna know what hit you in the form of a shapely Rita Ramos. She just might be the one to tame you...and Rita, who would be better for a sweetheart like you, who's fondest wish in life is for a stable family oriented man to love you? Oh yeah...you two are perfect for each other. Two good people who deserve to be happy. Iz, you are a genius girl. Now I have some serious planning to do. How do I get them to see that they belong with each other?
She sat at the counter and used the phone...
Hello Rita. This is Iz. I'm not calling to pressure you, but I was wondering if you had reached a decision regarding Maria's offer for you to stay for a few days...
You did? Great... Yes, there is something else that I need to ask you. I'm going shopping and I need a shopping buddy. Liz has been taken home to rest and Maria is with Michael at her moms place. I need a few things and since I'm a firm believer that shopping is a group thing, when one doesn't have a group to speak of, she would settle for a pair if you are game...
Thank you so much Rita. You've saved me from myself. I'll pick you up in forty-five minutes.
Across town, the phone rings and wakes Maria and Michael from their much needed nap...
"Michael...Michael are you awake?"
"What...yeah, I'm up...
"Answer the phone...
"You go..
She groaned and stumbled half asleep into the next room. When she reached out for the phone, the machine picked up the call. She stood and listened with an expression of confusion on her face. Michael walked in and stood behind her looking equally puzzled...
Jim, it's me. But who else would it be? Anyway, when you stop by to check on things would you please be a dear and grab the blue bag that I left in my bedroom? I need it for the conference. I'll be in Albuquerque on the third as planned. Meet me at the Radisson hotel room 203. I'll leave a card key for you at the desk. One more thing... uhm…never mind. I miss you honey. I can't wait to see you.
"What the hell is going on? Michael, did you, or did you not tell me that Jim is married?"
"Yes, I did because he was. Hey, calm down. I'm sure that there is a logical explanation.
(he pulled her into his arms)
"Oh my goodness...my mom and Jim are having an affair."
"Maria, go take a shower and we will go together to see Jim."
"Please? Can we do that?'
"Of course. I'll get the bag from the car and use the guest shower. Baby, if you don't get all bubbly and aromatic in the tub we might be able to leave in half an hour."
(he was serious)
"You are a funny one Guerin and it helps that you are so damned gorgeous."
(she pinched his butt)
"Ow blondie! Watch the posterior. It's sensitive."
"Oh, I do watch the posterior and everything else. Just you remember that it's all mine - the whole package."
(she smiled)
"Forever.
(he pulled her into a searing kiss) Now go,
(he knudged her forward) get more gorgeous. We have things to do."
Somewhere in the middle of the mall, Iz and Rita are having a good time spending too much money. Iz talked Rita into buying a new outfit to wear that night with a cute strappy, heeled sandal and matching purse. Rita missed hanging out with Isabelle and Liz. She hadn't had a girl’s day out in a long time. She loved the whole group of them because even though they knew of the permanent connection between Michael and Maria, they still accepted her and she always knew that what they felt for her was genuine. She was always treated with respect. Maria surprised her the most. She didn't pass judgement - she just welcomed her with open arms. She knew that if she were to move to Roswell, she would have a ready made family. Only one thing was missing, but she was sure that she would find him. Soon. She didn't understand how or why she knew, she just did.
Rita's thinking: Mental note to myself...always make sure that I look decent when I go out. I don't want to be rejected by my future husband before we are formally introduced.
The eager shoppers purchased their wares and left the mall. Iz took Rita to the hotel to gather her things and turn in her rental car. Rita decided to go to Iz's place until Maria picked her up later. She called her family to let them know of her plans and figuring that Greg was asleep, she left him a note thanking him for his help. Greg was standing in the shadows. He thought about speaking until he heard Rita mention that Maria was singing in the hotel club that night. Maria had left him a message earlier saying that she would speak to him later that night but he decided that he was going to the club.
While Rita packed, Iz waited in the hotel lobby so she could use the phone...
"Yeah?"
"Michael, it's me, Iz. Are you busy?"
"Nope, just stepped out of the shower. What's up?"
"Remember when you told me that if I ever needed money, all I had to do is ask? Well, I'm asking."
"Are you in some kind of trouble?"
"No, no. nothing like that. I need the money to help a friend."
"How much?"
"Ten thousand dollars in travelers checks
...(she braced herself for a serious tongue lashing that would undoubtedly be heard all over Roswell)
"Done."
"But Michael...if it weren't of the utmost importance you know that, that...what, what did you say?"
"I said...done."
"Just like that?"
"Yeah Iz, just like that. You just better not be in any trouble. If you were, you would tell me, right?"
"Of course Michael. For some strange reason, you would be the first one that I told."
"And this thing, whatever it is, is legal?"
"Yes Michael. I promise."
"Ok. I'll make a phone call for you. Go to the local bank and ask for Stanley. He will probably ask you for your ID because he is completely paranoid where I am concerned."
"Probably because he is afraid of you. What did you do to him?"
"Nothin'. I had to yell at him a little, once. But I never physically touched him."
"I see.
(she giggled) Thank you Michael. So, so much. This is on the up and up - honest. I love you baby brother."
"Love you too Iz. Don't get yourself in any trouble. Bye."
"Bye bye."
"Hey Iz, you ready?"
"Yeah. We need to make two more stops, the bank and our local courier. I have something that needs to be delivered right away."
They stopped at the bank and Rita waited outside while Iz went inside to handle her business. Rita saw something that caught her attention and she crossed the street to look in a store front window. Kyle was driving by with his partner and saw her. Rita could feel someone watching and she turned to see who it was. Their eyes made contact across the distance...
Matt - "Take your eyes off that woman and focus on the road. I would like to make it home to my wife tonight."
"Shut up Matt. You have a wife. Let me have my fantasies. Did you see her? She is gorgeous...
"But what about...
"If you mention her name in my car, I will pull out my revolver and shoot you."
"Kyle, you are not happy with her. Please - do what you should have done months ago."
"Matt, I am one step ahead of you. It will be done today."
"Well, it's about damned time. Now, about that dark haired beauty…
“Watch your mouth Matt, she could be my future wife.
(smile) If we didn’t have to be back at the precinct – like right now, I would go back and ask her name.”
Rita turned to look into the eyes of a man that made her heart beat erratically.
(speaking out loud) "Why can't I meet someone like him?"
Inside the bank, Stanley went to the back to get the travelers checks and Iz used the phone on his desk to call the airport and purchase a one way ticket to Las Vegas. The ticket would be waiting for Carol at the counter. As she was terminating the call, Stanley came back with the checks and a document for Isabelle to sign. She put them in an envelope and bid him adieu. She walked across the street to see the courier. She waved at Rita who was still standing in the store front window looking at baby things. Iz went inside and purchased a box. She put the checks inside with a note that said:
Go To Vegas!! Live Your Dream!! There is a plane ticket waiting for you at the airport - the 6:45 flight. It's the only flight that leaves tonight so don't miss it!! If you decide that you don't want to take advantage of this one time offer, please drop the checks at the local bank with a teller named Stanley. He will know what to do.
Good Luck to you Carol,
From a friend
The woman behind the counter wrapped the package beautifully. The courier had a major crush on Iz. She told him that he'd get an extra fifty if he could have the package delivered in the next half hour. She kissed him on the cheek and stuck the fifty in his shirt pocket. The poor guy was so embarrassed that he stuttered...
"I...I...I...will ha..have it there in..in..in..the next
(deep breath) fifteen minutes."
He left the building in a hurry to make his delivery to Carol Stevens personally. He made it to the house in less than fifteen minutes. He had promised Isabelle. Carol was not happy to see what she termed ‘the nerd’ at the door, especially since he had interrupted her nap. She was more annoyed when he insisted that she sign for the package or he couldn't leave it with her. She rudely slammed the door in his face with out giving him a tip, but he didn't care because he had gotten a tip from the most beautiful woman in Roswell. He smiled all the way back to his job.
Carol sat on the couch and admired the neatly wrapped package.
"What has Kyle done now? Damnit, if he keeps doing nice things for me it will make it harder for me to walk away from him. Harder, but not impossible."
She ripped the paper off the box and opened it...
"What the hell?" She pulled the checks out of the envelope...
"Oh my god, are these for real?" She read the note...
"Who could have done this? Kyle doesn't have this kind of money. Not yet. Who knows about my Vegas dream?"
She called the airport and the teller confirmed that there was indeed a ticket waiting for her at the desk for the only flight out that night. She couldn't tell her more other than the ticket had been purchased anonymously. Carol hung up. She was thinking that she should have given the nerd a tip for bringing her great news.
(she broke into a huge grin)
"I'm going to Vegas!!"
She was glad that she hadn't lugged all her things from her parents home. It would take less than an hour for her to pack and shower. She would just leave Kyle a goodbye note and leave that grungy town as fast as the plane would take her. She made a phone call and started packing...
"Hey Carla!! Yeah, it's Carol. Guess what? I'm headed your way...no - tonight. You got room for me?"
After Michael made the call, he and Maria dressed and headed over to Jim Valenti's house. They walked hand in hand to the door and Michael rang the bell...
"You sure that you want to do this?"
"I have to know Michael."
They heard a resounding 'Come In!!' from somewhere inside the house, then they heard – ‘Kyle, why do you still bother to knock on the door?!'
Maria hesitated for a moment then they stepped inside and stood in the foyer. Jim stepped around the corner with a towel covering his just washed hair. He was dressed in jeans and a tee, but he was barefoot. He pulled the towel down and could hardly believe his eyes...
"Maria? Maria DeLuca, is that you?
(he smiled the grandest smile) Let me look at you! (he stepped forward and pulled her small body into a friendly embrace) Your mother will be so, so happy to see you. Does she know yet that you are here?"
"No, not yet. Sheriff Valenti...
" It’s Captain, but call me Jim, honey, please. Come on in and sit. Both of you. Hey Michael."
(they shook hands)
"Hey Jim."
"Jim, I'm here to ask you about my mom. I would rather not waste time and beat around the bush."
"Ok."
"First, I've come home to stay."
"I'm glad to hear that. Your mom will be ecstatic."
"Which brings me to what I want to ask you. I was at my moms and the phone rang. Before I could answer, the machine picked up. Uhm...the message was for you. My mother is a grown woman and I would never entertain the thought of telling her how to live her life, but Sheriff – I mean Captain, I'm told that you are married and...
"Not any more."
"What happened Jim? The last time that I saw you two, you seemed really happy."
"Please, let me grab us some lemonade and I will explain everything."
Michael and Maria sat patiently as Jim relayed the events surrounding his and Amy's lives for the past eleven years. Jim met Ann before Maria left town. He, Ann and Amy were all good friends who got together on occasion. He explained that after Maria left, Amy slipped into depression and since she was such a special friend he and Ann started spending time with her. They made sure that she was eating and they helped her with her store because they didn't want her to lose what she had worked so hard for. He explained that they were afraid that she would give up and unintentionally harm herself.
Maria listened as she shed silent tears.
“After Amy got better, Ann and I married. We were still as close as ever. Not long after that, Amy brought to my attention that Ann didn’t look well. I couldn’t see it because she was always so happy and full of life. She was the person who took care of us. She later confessed that she hid it from me…
“Hid what Jim?”
“Ann was very sick. She had known for years. The disease was degenerative and once her body started breaking down, it was painful. She said that she didn’t tell me because she wanted to live a full life and she couldn’t stand the thought of being in and out of hospitals being a pin cushion when there was nothing that could be done for her. I was slowly losing my mind, but your mother
…(he looked Maria in the eyes) your beautiful, supportive and wonderful mother helped the both of us through the worst time in my life. I was the Sheriff so I had a job to do. I still had a family to support. When I wasn’t home, your mom was here taking complete control of the situation. She did everything – fed her, bathed her, read to her. She was an unstoppable force. At one point, I was so desperate that I called Max. He came and when he touched her all he felt was pain. He couldn’t help her. The damage to her internal organs was too extensive and they were all shutting down. All that we could do was keep her comfortable.
Toward the end she was hardly conscious. Amy and I would sit up all night watching over her. One night,
(a long pause) she didn’t have the strength to fight anymore. She went quietly in her sleep.
Amy was there thank god, because I lost it. I was in a daze. I don’t remember doing anything. Amy took care of all the arrangements because I was mentally and physically unable. That is when I knew just how strong your mother really is. She never left my side. When I was able to function, I remember telling Amy that she was giving too much of herself and that she had no obligations to me and my son. She stated simply – ‘I would never turn my back on you…
"Like I did
...(he wiped her tears and gave her a reassuring squeeze)
"No, Maria. She never believed that. Please, don't you believe it either. One thing that I admire about your mom is her ability to know people. She can just look at you and know you. She knew that after time had passed, it was next to impossible for you to come back. She didn't fault you for that. She understood your need to be independent - to make it on your own. She also understood why. Remember the picture that you sent to her of you and Greg the night that you won the big award? Well, your mom looked at the picture and she said to me,
"I see in his eyes that he is domineering and controlling and selfish." She said,
"Jim, my baby has DeLuca blood running through her veins. When she figures it out, and she will, she will then do what is necessary." She always believed that, and from the looks of things, I'd say that time has come.
"We are so sorry about your wife."
"I am too, but over time it got easier. Time and Amy. We waited about a year before we started dating. We are still dating. Know this Maria, I'm in love with your mother. In some way, I think I always have been. I think you two know better than most that sometimes there is only one person on this planet or any other, for you. I can tell you this without embarrassment or feeling like I’m committing a sin. Amy is my person. I loved my wife with my whole heart but she is gone. I never thought that I’d be truly happy again, but your mother changed all that for me. When I think Amy's ready, I'm gonna ask her to marry me. Is that ok with you Maria?"
"Jim, you don't need my permission, but yeah. I think that it's wonderful. I just want her to be happy. Thank you Jim for doing what I couldn't. Thank you for protecting and taking care of my mother.
(she hugged him) I will never forget your kindness.”
"Hey, it was no problem at all. We took care of each other. Now that you are home, maybe she will really consider my offer for her to move into this house with me."
"Oh, yeah?"
"Yeah. I've been trying for months with fail. She tells me that you have to have a place to come home to, and she want's to be there when you do."
"Maria is making plans to restore the house."
"Yes, I am but I'm gonna wait to see what she wants to do. If she moves in with you, she can sell it to me. I have some definite plans for my childhood home. I couldn't bare to see anyone else with it. Jim, I planned to surprise her in Albuquerque but since you are going to see her, I will surprise her at home. I'm thinking that I need to plan a family get together for her return. Maybe a backyard barbeque."
"Sounds good. She would enjoy that. Listen, if you need to use my yard, you are welcome. I have more space in the back than Amy does."
"Sounds like a plan. I will take care of everything."
"Here, take this extra key to the house. When you start buying supplies, just put them in here. You and Michael are welcome to stay here if you like."
"I think we'll be ok at moms, but we might. Here
...(she wrote her cell number on a piece of paper) call me when you have definite return plans. I want to have everything ready when you get back."
Twenty minutes away
Carol stepped out of the shower and called a cab. She quickly dressed and threw her dirty clothes into her carryon bag. It was four oclock and she wanted to leave early enough to stop at the bank to cash in one of the checks. She wanted to have some real cash in her pocket when she arrived so she and Carla could go out and party. She would call her parents when she got there. She wouldn't give them the chance to try to talk her out of going. The cab pulled up and the driver honked the horn. She took one last look around, left a letter on the table, and she was on her way.
"Las Vegas, here I come!!"
Ok, that's it for today.
I'll be back soon,
Dee
