Part 11

**Minor NC-17 Warning Ahead**

Music from the Counting Crows drifted from Max’s stereo in his room, playing the perfect melody to his somber tone right about now.

It was set. Three weeks from now the girl of his dreams was going to seriously be out of his life forever. Not that she was even in it or even his to begin with, just literally in his dreams these past couple of nights. He thought back to another time.

”Max, what’s wrong?” Isabel asked, flopping down on her brother’s bed.

“Nothing Izzy. Why?” Max kept his eye on the ball he was bouncing off the ceiling.

“Because you always listen to the Counting Crows when you’re depressed. It’s a given.”

He just groaned. “Why do you have to know me so well?”

She just smirked. “Because I’m psychic. Just like I know that It’s about a girl.. or wait.. No it’s the lack there of!”

Running his hand through his hair he sighed. “You heard me talking to Alex, didn’t you?”

She smirked again as she headed toward the door, looking back. “Don’t worry Max. She’ll come one day and when she does, it’ll be explosive.”

Explosive. More like disastrous the way things were now.

It had been a mistake to stay this long, he concluded. Nothing ever got resolved anyway and if it weren’t for Cassie he wouldn’t had come in the first place. He knew what he had to do as he got up and pulled out his leather backpack from under the bed. He had to leave now before he got too attached.

Packing the usual, the clothes he brought, some clothes he left from last time, some necessities, and his music, he was ready. This time had been more productive than the previous times at least, he had opened up to someone this time and actually felt for the first time in ages. Maybe he could find that somewhere else, although he highly doubted it. Somewhere else didn’t have Liz Parker.

He was going to leave before the summer was over anyway since he had a job offering in New York with a record company. It was nothing that would put him high up in the world, but certainly something to get his foot in the door with since he knew music and wanted to manage and find amazing talent out there some day.

He just had one more thing to do before he was on his way.

Cassie.

This was the shortest time he had ever stayed and it got harder each time he left here. He shook his head as he started out the door, but was stopped by one frantic Maria Deluca.

“I need another guy’s point of view. Space-boy doesn’t seem to have much input on it, saying I should keep my big fat nose out of Liz’s life. What does he know?” She passed him and sat on his bed, ruffling her already wild blonde hair.

Max couldn’t keep but laughing at this a little. “Well I don’t think I’d have that much to say either…” He trailed off, frowning.

“Wait… where are you going?” He was just going to leave her here like this!?.

“I’m leaving. I shouldn’t have come this time and I….” He explained.

“No! Max, please stay??” Is all Maria could ask. She needed someone else to try to talk some sanity into her best friend

“Why?” He asked. ‘She barely knows me’

“Well why are you leaving?” She asked back.

“I have a job opportunity in New….” He started. It’s a perfectly good explanation.

“Yeah yeah. Why did you choose this particular moment to leave?” She was good…

“I just… things are getting hectic around here and I don’t particularly want to stick around and watch my pain in the ass brother marry someone he doesn’t dese...” He stopped himself before he could continue...

“I have to get things ready in New York.” He finished. That was a perfectly reasonable explanation.

“Oh My God! You really do like her! This is fucking perfect!” Maria opened her mouth in shock as her eyes went wide.
Jumping up, she widely grinned.

”What?! I don’t like Liz…. like that.” What the hell was happening??

“I didn’t even mention her name and you knew. You like her.”

That was true… It wasn’t that obvious!? Was it?

“You barely know me, how can you say I….” Max started getting angry as Maria continued on.

”You like her.” She continued to smile, knowingly.

“But I…”

“You like her.” Maria danced around laughing. Was this chick crazy?

“I just met her.”

“And you like her.”

He huffed. “Maria I…”

“Yooouu Liiiike Heeeerrrr.”

“I like her.”

He sighed, knowing there wasn’t a way of winning an argument with this Maria Deluca. Now he knew how Michael must feel.

”Aha! I knew it!” She jumped up squealing as she hugged him. Max just stood there, frowning. He didn’t want anyone else to know and now her best friend who probably tells her everything knew. This was not good.

She, on the other-hand, was a genius. A genius with a plan.

This was going to be good.

……………………

Liz let the bubbles fill her senses as she leaned back in the tub, listening to the so Counting Crows music coming from Max’s room. She was just taking time relaxing and taking a small break if only for a little while, from her chaotic life.

She was happy… wasn’t she?

She was.

The man she… Kyle, had just proposed to her in front of everyone for the second time, afterwards telling her that he couldn’t wait to marry her and that’s why he wanted it to be so soon. They were going to eventually, did it matter if it was sooner than expected?

She sighed.

She kept seeing Max’s face and for a fleeting moment, pictured him the one on one knee. She wouldn’t dare tell this to anyone though, because while it was just one fleeting thought, it would probably prove her to be crazy since she just met the guy and he was Kyle’s brother.

But then why did she almost gasp when she saw him leaning against the doorway looking almost…

No. No, that couldn’t have been pain she saw on his face. See? She had to stop thinking. It wasn’t good for her and he was completely out of the question. Besides, he had enough to deal with without some plain brown headed girl drooling over him when she belonged to another. This was her just being selfish.

She just focused on relaxing although that wasn’t really possible considering she had about a million things to do before the wedding.

Like tell her parents she was engaged…

It wasn’t that her parents didn’t like Kyle, they did, but they could be very over-protective sometimes. Here she was, all grown up now, finally starting a career for herself and living on her own for a while now, but they still sometimes treated her like she was still 16.

Her mom would of course cry, saying her baby was all grown up, and her dad would get this serious look on his face and want to have ‘a little talk’ with Kyle, but the end result would probably just be them trying to adjust to it. Not to mention the fact that they still had to meet Kyle’s parents and family which no doubt, they would love.

Still, it was a lot of pressure.

She needed something to get her mind off things so she laid her head back against the porcelain tub, with her shoulders still caressed in the strawberry scented bubbles around her and just let her mind wander.

And it automatically wandered to Max. A little daydreaming couldn’t hurt…

His skin seemed to take on a radiant glow in the candlelight as his strong arms massaged her shoulders as he sat in the tub behind her. She was in heaven as his magical hands worked havoc on her upper body, relieving the tension that had been there for a while.

“Maaax…” She moaned. Life couldn’t get any sweeter than this or him as he continued.

“Does this feel good, Liz?” He asked her as his right hand went past her shoulder, exploring further down until he cupped her breast.

She moaned again. “Yess…It does.” She was trying to stay in control but that word didn’t seem to exist when she was around Max Evans like this. This time was not for thinking though as he moved his fingers around her nipple that much needed attention.

She could feel his breath tingling on her ear as she just let his hands do whatever the hell they wanted. She didn’t care as long as he didn’t stop touching her. And he didn’t. In fact, he was touching her now even more as his other hand worked it’s way down her body and through her dark curls.

“Why do you fight this?” He asked, taking her earlobe in his mouth, suckling for a second.

“Ah…Ma…fight what?” Why was he asking her questions at a time like this!? Did he not know what he was doing to her!?

“Us. You’ve never dreamed about Kyle in this way.”

Kyle? Kyle who?

“Who..ahh? She gasped as a finger continued its path further, stroking her.

“You’ve never let him touch you like the way I’m touching you now.” Brushing his thumb over her swollen nub, putting pressure on it was slowly driving her crazy as she arched up a little.

“You’ve never let him see you like I’m seeing you now.” Inserting one finger into her, he slowly stroked her inside, making her moan a little more, go crazy a little more.

“Oh my god…” She was slowly being woven undone as she moved her hips to the rhythm of that glorious hand of his.

“Liz, you already know the truth about us. It’s inside you.” He told her as his hand slowed its pace inside her, squeezing her bundle of nerves one last time.

“Maaaax…”

……………………..

Max paced around his room wondering where Maria went.

Did she go to tell Liz?

Did she go to tell Kyle? Although she seemed to hate Kyle so he doubted she would go do that.

Deciding he needed to clear his thoughts and splash some cold water on his face, he headed towards the bathroom.

Opening the door, his eyes adjusted to the dim light lit only by candles and the same eyes just about popped out of his head as he saw what was before him.

Liz.

Her back was turned from him as she lay in the bathtub full of bubbles. Her hair was swept up in a pile on top of her head and the candlelight lit glorious neck and back, or what he could see of it anyways.

He stood there just in awe of the view he was getting when he heard his name. He froze.

“Maaax.” She said almost out of breath.

Oh shit she knew he was in there! But how? She hadn’t even turned around.

Blushing, knowing he was caught, he apologized. “I….I’m so..sorry.” He said, turning to go out the door.

Liz was snapped out of the high of her dream as she halfway turned around.

“Max!”

Oh God. He was there! Did he hear her say his name like that!?

“I’m sorry, I should have knocked.” He continued, fumbling with the doorknob behind him to open the door.

He had just accidentally walked in.

“Oh! No… No it’s my fault Max. I was the one who forgot to lock the door this time.” She smirked. Whew. Luckily she was still covered up by the bubbles, although they were thinking. She was so flushed still from that dream…

“It’s okay; we’ll just have to be more careful. Uh see you later, Liz.” And with that, he was gone.

…………………..

“Michael!” Maria yelled as soon as she found him. She had to talk to him about this!

“Maria, I don’t want to discuss this anymore. It’s Liz’s life and it’s her decision whether she wants to marry that assho…”

“Max likes her.” She cut him off.

He furrowed his eyebrow as he thought for a second. “Really?”

“Really really.” She nodded, smiling.

“Well that’s not anything new, Liz is attractive afterall.” He said, knowing Maria wouldn’t get upset. She knew he loved her and only thought of her.

“Yes but there’s more too it. I could see it in his eyes.” He had to admit, his girlfriend was great at reading the emotions in people’s eyes.

“But there’s nothing we can do about it. She’s marrying his brother Maria.” He was the logical one in this. He liked Max and thought they’d be great together at one time, but he knew the facts. “Unless…”

Was she thinking what he was thinking?

She nodded. “I think she likes him too.”

…………..……

Liz groaned as she leaned back against the tub once again, thinking about that dream. She had intended only to daydream, to stay in control more but she drifted asleep as soon as she had closed her eyes.

What a dream though! She was still coming down from it since it had still got her…riled up. The words Max spoke to her still stuck with her as she frowned.

You never dreamed about Kyle like this. You never him touch you. You never let him see you…” And she hadn’t. She had been so closed off to him and she couldn’t figure out why she could so easily dream about Max like this but not the one she was to marry.

Kyle must be so frustrated with her, and her brushing him off all the time when he wanted to get intimate. She had been putting this off with him for way too long and she knew what she had to do.

TBC….

Let me know what you think! This is only the second time I've wrote NC-17 so I cant say that im not a little red lol.

Authors Note - Wow! I didn't expect such a response from that last chapter! Thank you all so much. I wanted to point out some things on Kyle. There's a reason that he acts the way that he does. He also is marrying Liz earlier then expected so he can be a partner at the law firm. That's the reason the date was pushed up, even though he does want to have sex with Liz. This chapter deals with this subject further.

And on to the story...

Summary: Max and Liz in my own crazy world that I have created. ‘sigh’ need I say more?..

Part 12

Phillip Evans sat down in the chair at his desk in the dark study. Looking at the clock, it was well into the evening and the house seemed silent. But he didn’t notice. He was a man lost in another time, thinking about the way things used to be… when his family was whole.

He opened his desk drawer to reveal a picture in a dark frame that he looked at often. It was a candid snapshot of what seemed like a lifetime ago. He held the basketball tight to his chest, obviously laughing as his daughter Isabel was hanging on his back trying to get the ball, while Max was on his left side and Kyle was on his right side trying to the same. They had been unaware that their mother had taken such a moment but were glad later on, as it held good memories.

Sighing, he rubbed his hand over his face as he stared at his Isabel. She was such a lively young woman, a wonderful daughter, and he still was asking God why she was taken from them. He would never understand but still searched for reason.

She was one of the strongest people he ever knew, trusting them enough to tell them when she was in trouble and when she needed someone to talk to. Even when she found out she was pregnant she had found comfort in her parents’ arms instead of being too afraid and ashamed to even tell them.

It wasn’t she hadn’t realized she had made poor choices; she had just held her head up high and refused to give in to the problems so she could make them better.

Because of her they had Cassie.

But they had lost Max in the process.

He ran his finger across the smiling young man’s face in the picture. He seemed so carefree there, so happy with a smile from ear to ear. He barely even saw a shimmer of that young man now. They had all made mistakes after Isabel’s untimely death, words were said that could never be taken back, things were thought that shouldn’t have even crossed the mind, and a rip was made in the once happy family that stood still as time did in that moment as Phillip held it in his hands. Could his son ever forgive him for words spoken during grief and confusion?

Could Maxwell ever forgive them for keeping something they thought would be in the best interest for everyone?

Next he looked at Kyle’s younger looking face that held an arch eyebrow and a smirk. He was always the confident loud one of the Evan’s family and he was sure he got that from him when he was a young man many years ago. Kyle must have been a sophomore in college when that photo was taken and when he started coming into his own.

He was the typical big brother to Max and Isabel back then, being his usual cocky self but it was all in good spirits. Max and he were close at one time and they both took care of Isabel, being the protective big brothers that they were. Since though that arrogance had become more of a part of him and he didn’t recognize the playfulness once there but more competition in everything. It was a need, no hunger, to win and be the best at everything.

Maybe he had set too high standards for his children, but he just wanted them to succeed.

Was that so wrong?

Still looking through one of his desk drawers that hadn’t been touched in a while, he saw what had been kept there for no one to find. What he maybe had been subconsciously searching for since he had came in the study that evening.

It was something that brought his family together that he wouldn’t give anything for, but it was that same something that tore them apart in the end.

It was a set of adoption papers for a brother and a sister who came into their lives so many years ago as babies, who they despite whom they came from or where, the Evan’s considered untimely their children, flesh and blood, no matter what.

…………………

“There you are.” Liz smiled as she walked in Kyle’s room. He was doing push-ups like he usually did during his nightly routine.

He grunted. “Hold on…47…48...49…50.” He got up and stretched his muscles, looking in the mirror as he did so to approve of what he saw. As usual, he grinned.

Liz just waited by the door as he finished up, and then waited for him to finally look at her so they could talk.

“Hey sweet thang. I knew you’d come in here sooner or later.” He tipped his head and walked over to her as they hugged.

She just smiled, letting his hands roam down her backside until she finally pulled away. “We have to talk.” She bit her lip.

Uh oh.

“Uh oh.” He sat down on the bed, waiting for one of their talks that usually made her upset because he didn’t understand what the hell they were talking about.

“Kyle. I know it must be hard for you going all these months and not sharing that much…physical intimacy. We haven’t really even discussed it.” She cast her head down, a little embarrassed, worrying that she would come off as prudish but she knew they needed to talk about this.

Oh yeah… maybe this wasn’t an ‘uh oh’ conversation after all.

“You have no idea baby,” he placed his hands on her hips, licking his lips as he looked her up and down.

She shook her head though. “Which is why I think we can still wait Kyle.” She placed her hands on his on her hips and held them in her hands.

“Huh?” Huh? How could she wait when he was ready and more than willing?

“You proposed to me tonight for a wedding in three weeks. There’s so much to do between now and then that I don’t even know where to start. I want when we have se.. make love to be special. And what can be more special than the night we get married?”

He huffed. “Right now seems special too, though.” He knew that even though women changed their mind more than he changed his socks, that her mind was set on this. He’d thought he’d try though.

“Kyle...” she laughed and placed a hand on his cheek.

He nodded. “If that’s what you want then we’ll wait.” She smiled and just kissed him on his cheek.

He loved his fiancé, but she was torturing him with this ‘no sex’ business. He knew she had had sex before with her old boyfriend but she didn’t want to rush things this time. He thought for sure though they would have done the deed by their wedding date. Maybe he did a good thing then by pushing up the wedding date. The other good thing being that he was going to get to be a partner in a major firm who wanted ‘family men’. Until then, he had Tess.

“Thank you. I just thought we needed to talk about this since it seems like we’ve been putting it off forever.” She sighed in relief. Maybe by then she would be ready to give herself to him. Hopefully her heart too even though something was still pulling it in the other direction, telling her to run as fast as she could.

But this was love wasn’t it? What she had dreamed of ever since she was a little girl, pretending her white Sunday dress was really a wedding dress and she was marrying the man of her dreams?

It must have been.

“Well, okay then. I have to call my parents tomorrow and work out… somewhere to even start.” She got up, not letting her mind run wild with all the things she had to do.

“Yeah. I have to call some associates of mine tomorrow to plan for a dinner party. I want to show off my bride-to-be.”

“Well tell Jesse I said hello but he better not make you wor….”

“No, not Jesse.” He smiled.

Liz furrowed her brow. “Who?”

“Just some big shots at Brooks and Kates law firm.” He wasn’t going to tell her everything about this dinner even though it was crucial that they bought the whole Kyle settling down and being a family man thing, considering he was a little young to be a partner in a major law firm. But that wouldn’t stop him. He was going to be on top of it all. And he certainly wasn’t going to tell Liz this is why he asked her to marry him so soon in the first place.

“Oh really?” She wondered why the law firm that was supposed to be rivals of Jesse’s firm wanted to have dinner with them. Or why Kyle would want to have dinner with them, anyways.

“Yeah. Just something that we do when uh special occasions such as this arise.”

“I see. Well we both better get some rest then.”

She walked out of the room, walking down the hallway and into the guest bedroom she was currently occupying.

She heard the shower water running as she passed the bathroom that she and Max were sharing for now and still blushed, remembering him getting out of that same shower not too long ago.

Bad Liz. Very bad.

“Penny for your thoughts? Or hell, I’d pay a dollar to see what you’re imagining right now.” Maria smirked with her arms crossed, as she saw her best friend with her ear almost to the bathroom door.

Stunned, Liz jerked straight up not even knowing that she was that close to the bathroom door.

“Maria! God you scared me!” Liz caught her breath as she turned toward her mirror, absently fixing her hair.

“Mmmhmm.” She gave her friend a knowing glance but decided to drop it for now. Liz was too shy to tell what she was really thinking when it came to things... or someone’s like this.

“So three weeks.” Maria nodded her head, and looked toward the ceiling.

“Mmhmm. That’s right.” Liz was about to lose it.

“Three weeks…” Nuh uh. She knew her chica was losing it inside.

“Oh my God Maria! What am I going to do!? I don’t... I don’t know where to even start planning a wedding let alone plan an entire one in three weeks!” Liz shook her head and sat on the bed and rubbed her temples.

“That’s more like it girl. I knew the perfectionist in you was not going to take such little time so lightly.” Maria rubbed her back, relieved that her friend was actually showing some real emotion about the situation instead of the fake smile she put on most of the time.

“You okay?” Even though she didn’t approve of Kyle, and was going to secretly scheme to break them up, she was still going to support her friend through this. She did feel guilty though… but this was for the best.

Liz sighed and just shook her head. “I’m serious. My parents don’t even know I’m engaged yet! I have to call them tomorrow to come. Or do you think I should go to them? I should go to them.. It’s not right of me to plan things at the Evan’s home when Diane has been so nice to me and here I am already planning to have people over at her…”

Maria covered her best friend’s mouth with her hand.

“Calm down sweetie. Mrs. Evans is one of the nicest people, and I’m sure she wouldn’t mind since they have to meet them too, ya know. It’s kinda a good plan to have both sets of parents actually ‘meet’ before the wedding.” Maria smirked. Usually Liz was the one that kept her grounded but she wasn’t going to waste moments when it was the other way around.

Liz just smiled. “Yeah.. you’re right. I still should ask her though.”

A few minutes of silence passed when Liz’s gaze went in the direction of the bathroom door once again, not going unnoticed.

“I talked to shower boy earlier.” Maria gazed at the off white door with her.

“You did?” Liz saw something turning in her best friend’s eyes and was afraid to even ask.

“Uh Huh. He’s leaving New York or something like that.” She knew he wasn’t going to leave after their talk and after she had called him out on why he was leaving. But she still wanted to see Liz’s reaction.

“WHAT? Oh.. I mean, Max is leaving?” Her heart sank but she ignored it. She chucked it up to being just wanting to help ‘fix’ things between him and his family. He grew to be her friend. Her friend.

“Yeah.. I wish we would have got to know the guy better, but since he apparently doesn’t come here often I think we won’t be seeing much of him in the future.” Maria shrugged during her act but watched Liz out of the corner of her eye, almost looking desperate.

“Oh. Yeah me too.” She nodded her head. Maybe Max leaving would be the best thing so she could focus on her wedding and not have any more of those dreams. She couldn’t help but feel sadness though.

“Yeah. Max seems like a really good guy.” She was going to milk this for all it was worth and smiled at Liz’s next words. Ah, she was getting somewhere. And hopefully her spaceboy was too since she had convinced him to talk to Max some more about this whole situation.

“I don’t want him to leave, Maria.”

……………….

There was a knock at the door as Max finished up changing into his plaid boxers after his shower. He had taken an extra long one, an extra long cold one. Thoughts of Liz laying there in the bathtub in his bathroom just kept popping into his head.

“Come in.”

“Hey man.” Michael walked in, shutting the door behind him.

“Hey. How’s it goin?”

“Good. You?”

“Good.”

Max wondered why Michael was in there because he looked like he had something else to say.

“Maria uh wanted me to talk to you about this whole screwed up situation about you and Lizzy liking each other and her marrying Kyle and stuff.” He blurted out, he wasn’t really good at shit like this so he didn’t know why he even bothered coming in and discussing this.

But he didn’t want to be cut off for a week either. Women were brutal.

“Oh... Look, I don’t get along with Kyle. You don’t like him. But Liz is a great person, I consider her a friend now but it’s her decision to be with him. I think we all should respect that.”

Michael nodded. At least he was being honest. “Yeah man. But I still think we should let whatever happens, happen.” Max accepted those words and Michael ran his hand through his hair. The thing that his new friend didn’t realize though, was that nothing usually stood in the way of Maria’s schemes. She liked to ‘make’ whatever happens, happen.

“You wanna go shoot some hoops? I noticed your folks had a basketball net by the garage.”

“Yeah, man. That’d be cool.”

…………………..

Diane Evans stood in the doorway to the study, watching her husband look out the window at something below.

“It’s been a long day.” She walked over to him, placing her arms around his waist. She knew something other than Cassie getting hurt had bothered him all day.

“Yeah. It has.”

She looked down at what her husband was intently staring at and smiled.

“Michael and Max seemed to have become friends. I haven’t seen Max play basketball since…” She trailed off. Since Isabel was alive.

“I know. This time he seems a little different doesn’t he?”

“Yeah… I think it has to do with Liz and her friends. They have shown real kindness to him since they all met. I think she wants to fix things between….” That was when she noticed the papers laying on the desk.

“Oh Phillip…”

“Diane, I think it’s time we get our family back.”

TBC…

Authors Note - This part was the hardest I’ve had to write for this fic so far. I wasn’t sure how to write this part, not wanting to make it cheesy but too angsty either.. Hopefully I did what I had in my head justice and I finally finished this part. This is something that had to be written in order for the Max and Liz storyline in itself to progress, seeing as how there are so many storylines in this one story that I have written. Thank you so much for the continued support, feedback, and bmails that I have gotten, urging me to go on because without you guys, there wouldn’t be more to “Here is Gone.” I assure you though, there is much much more to this story that I haven’t told yet and since I have this part finished now, the others will surely come to me quicker.

On to the story…

Summary: Max and Liz in my own crazy world that I have created. ‘sigh’ need I say more?..

Part 13

Liz covered her peach lips with more lip gloss in the mirror as she looked over her appearance one more time. It was late at night and she was acting as if she was going somewhere important.

Well, technically she was.. She was going to see Max and maybe try to convince him to stay.

For Cassie’s sake.

Yeah.. that was it.

She kept trying to convince herself that the feelings she was had been having were due to pre-wedding jitters, or that she just wanted to fix this broken man she had become friends with in the short few days she had been at the Evan’s home.

Whatever she tried wasn’t working and she kept going back to the fact that maybe her feelings were because she actually felt something for Max Evans… which was crazy because she was marrying his brother.

Ugh.

Why did she care so much that he was leaving?

And why did the thought of him leaving make her feel like she couldn’t breathe?

Max Evans had put a force on her like no one ever had and she was silently drowning in all of this, not wanting to hurt Kyle and keep her promise of marriage to him. She didn’t want to damage this family any more than it already had been. Liz Parker just had to keep her head above the surface for three weeks and everything would be fine.

Smoothing down her hair one last time and giving her shirt one more tug down, she headed down the stairs.

……………

It had been ages since he had played this game, here on this court. He thought of a happier time when this slab of concrete and basketball goal was used more frequently by a loving family.

It was like another lifetime ago.

It was another family ago.

His eyes focused on the ball he was twirling in his hands as he and Michael sat on the side, taking a break and drinking some bottled water.

“Good game.” Michael said, not being one much for words.

“Yeah it was.” Max said, taking a sip and focused on the ball.

“So you play a lot? Your game is on, Max.”

Max thought on this for a few seconds before responding. “Yeah, yeah I used to play a lot with my folks but when things got… hectic.. I don’t know, I just stopped.” He opened up in that simple answer more than he thought he would. Somehow he knew that Michael wouldn’t judge him though just like he knew Liz didn’t either.

“Yeah, I feel you. Do you ever see you and them bein’ close again?” He wasn’t asking these questions for Maria anymore, but more for himself. He liked Max and found himself wanting to help his new friend.

He was about to answer when the back gate opened to the patio to where they were playing. Speak of the devil, he thought.

Phillip Evans just stared for a minute while his wife squeezed his hand supportively.

“Max… could your mother and I have a word with you?” The way his father said it reminded him of when he was fifteen and didn’t think he got caught sneaking out of the house the night before.

They hadn’t grounded him but the lecture alone was worse.

Their expressions scared him though and his mind raced for a second as he got up from the cool concrete. “Is Cassie okay?”

“Yes, Cassie is fine and upstairs in her room asleep. This is about us.” Diane said to her son, still holding on to her husband’s arm for support for them both.

Michael just cleared his throat while Max remained silent. “Well, it’s getting late. I better go check on Maria and turn in. Good game Max,” he said as he looked towards his new friend once more who seemed white as a ghost.

“What about us?” Max returned to his usual cold state around his parents as he folded his sweat towel, doing anything to remain calm.

Diane could sense her son’s hesitation to talk to them and she understood. But it was time.

“Why don’t we go inside?” Phillip suggested as he suspected another argument coming on.

Max reluctantly nodded as he stared at the two people who raised him, who he used to be the closest to and he tried to keep memories of what once was from entering his head, but it was too late. He missed them and from the look in their eyes, he could see that they missed him too.

But could they all forgive each other? Could he forgive them from keeping his identity from him and his sister for so long?

And could they forgive him for killing their daughter?

………………

Liz slowly walked down the stairs, preparing to make a speech about how Max should stay for the sake of Cassie when she met Michael coming up the stairs all sweaty, holding a basketball.

“A little one on one by yourself Mike?” She asked.

“Nah. Me and Max has been playin’ for a while now out on their court. He’s a good player.

Liz was surprised. “Is Max still down there?” She was having time concentrating since a vision of Max all sweaty with his shirt off was currently occupying her thoughts.

“Yeah but his ‘rents came down to talk to him about somethin’ or other. Seemed real serious,” he continued as he walked up the stairs, noticing how Liz was dressed nice for this time of night and how she was going to go see Max. Man, they had it bad for each other.

“Oh? Well, I’ll just catch him later then.” Liz said watching Michael walk up the stairs towards Maria’s bedroom. She could just imagine the appending argument they would have with Maria telling him to take his stinky ass to the shower.

Liz kept walking down the stairs though, not wanting to eavesdrop but to just get a hold of what was going on. Were his parents trying to stop him from leaving too?

………………

“Do you understand Max? That no matter what you are our SON.” Phillip placed his hand on Max’s shoulder, seeing that while they sat on the flowery couch that he was somehow this time getting through to his son this time. The words spoken in the past ten minutes that he and his wife had spoke to this serious young man who they loved with all they’re heart was sinking in this time.

Max just kept trying to keep his emotions in check as somehow this time things were different. He couldn’t just turn a deaf ear to what his parents were saying. He knew the change had to do with a certain beautiful woman.

It had been too long since he had let himself feel, that he had forgotten who he used to be. Not that he didn’t like who he was now, he did, but a part of himself died with his sister Isabel that night... The part that valued family more than anything and he wanted to get that back.

It was time to let go, not of his sister but of the grudges, the guilt, and the heartache from losing not one just one family member, but them all.

It was time to let go.

“I understand.. Dad. Mom.” He nodded as he sighed, looking at both of them. No apologizes were needed this time because all of them had done the last five years apologizing with their eyes or words left unspoken.

Phillip looked at him with bright eyes, eyes filled with hope. “Do you really Max? I can’t tell you how sorry I am for these past five years.. We should have had this conversation a long long time ago but I didn’t know..”

“It’s okay Dad. I wasn’t the easiest person to talk to. I was so afraid that you both blamed me for killing Isabel and.. and..” A tear flowed down Max’s cheek as he tried to continue.

“No! Max No.. we never thought that.. we always blamed ourselves and thought you blamed us too..” Diane stated as she put a hand over her son’s hand.

“I think a part of me did for a while, but I know it wasn’t’. I just was hurt that I didn’t know the truth. That you and mom weren’t our re.. biological parents. Why did you keep it from us?” Max asked the one question that had been burning within him for the past five years.

…………………

Liz walked slowly back up the stairs, smiling that Max and his parents were finally communicating. She hadn’t listened to the whole conversation but enough to know that the mending had started. She hadn’t even known the Evan’s a week yet but wanted them to have all the happiness in the world.

She would be marrying into a good family. Although still torn about her feelings of marriage with Kyle, she tried to ignore the doubt in her head every time something about the wedding was brought up or sometimes even every time Kyle kissed her. She wanted a good man who loved her and that’s what Kyle was to her.

She thought of Max finally talking to his parents on what plagued him. It was strange how instantly she connected to him within their first few minutes of meeting. Hell, she even had that erotic dream about him which she just had to forget or it would drive her crazy!

Maybe she was meant to help him and his family mend the broken pieces they had refused to pick up for so long. All she knew was that she was glad that things had worked out and was hoping he would stay.

She wanted him here. But for the family’s sake of course…

Liz just sighed as she walked out onto the balcony of the guest room she was staying in and looked up at the full summer moon and the stars above, wishing that whatever happened, everything would work out for the best and she could forget the change that was happening within her.

……………..

Phillip and Diane Evans just sat there thinking about the question that was asked and they knew they had to answer. Diane was the first to speak up.

“Max, when we adopted you and Isabel when you were just babies, we had every intention of telling you one day that while you were biologically someone else’s children, you were still our children. But.. as time went on, it got harder and harder to tell you both and it just turned into something I was afraid of. Especially as you got older and I was afraid that you both would resent your father and I… which ended up happening anyways. I only wish I had more time to explain this to Isabel.”

“Mom… nothing would have ever made me or Isabel love you any less. We just wanted to know who we were… and felt that you both deprived us a small part of that by not telling us.”

“I know… I know…I’m so sorry. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t with that things would have turned out differently. I can tell you this much though, Cassie WILL know one day soon about her mother. But if I had told you both sooner than my daughter would…” Diane couldn’t go on as she was consumed with tears as Phillip hugged her at his side.

Max watched his mother fall apart and he never wanted to make her cry even though that was what he had done all of this time on purpose. He was hurting so he wanted others to hurt. It made him sick to himself that he had caused so much pain just because he was in pain.

“I think that there have been enough apologies in the past few years.. I think it’s time to try to start being a family again. Max…?”

“I’d like that..” Not another second passed before he was in the arms of the parents he once could turn to about anything.

A family that was once shattered into pieces was being mended again by a renewed love.

………………..

Squinted eyes peered at his parents and adopted brother as he watched the scene unfold from the hallway around the corner. He had loved his siblings very much at one point and would have done anything for his sister because he was the oldest and felt protective of her.

No matter how hard he tried though growing up though, Max was the son who he felt got most of his parents love. Max was the son they were proud of no matter what. Max was the son who his father took to work on ’bring your kid to work day’.

But Max was the son who wasn’t their son at all. Kyle was.

Since he had strayed though, Kyle did enjoy the attention he got from his parents and the approval of his father he always so desperately wanted. That’s why he was so excited over more than likely making partner at the highly popular law firm. But he feared now that the prodigal son had finally returned home, and things seemed to be going good with his parents, that everything he had built with them in the past five years was just going to disappear.

He had one thing that Max didn’t though. Liz. The wedding sure would get everyone’s attention focused on ‘him’ in the next couple of weeks so he had that time to make sure that he was the son that stayed on top.

His parents might forgive him of killing his sister then abandoning them, but he was going to make sure that Maxwell was going to fall harder than he ever had before.

……………...

Max walked up the stairs feeling lighter than he ever had before and there was one person that he just had to see.

Liz.

He started to knock on her bedroom door but stopped himself when he actually realized what time it was. He started to go back to his room when he noticed the light under the door.

’knock knock’

“It’s open!” She yelled from the balcony still looking up at the moon and the stars. “Get tired of Michael already?” She laughed, turning around.

Expecting it to be Maria, she gasped, surprised to see Max standing there.

“Oh hey Max. Sorry, I thought you were Maria.” She blushed, walking over to sit on the edge of the bed.

Max just grinned. “Its okay, I get that a lot actually.”

Liz just giggled as she looked at the floor until she thought what he might be coming in there to tell her. She didn’t want him to know she had been listening at all earlier.

“Are you still leaving? I know Maria said that you were packing earlier but I was hoping that I could convince you to stay..”

“Actually I’m not now. Things have changed. And I think I have you to thank for some of that.”

Liz shook her head, “Me? What are you talking about Max?”

He slowly walked over to her and sat next to her on the bed. “My parents and I just reconciled. We are going to try to move forward and not dwell on the past so much. I feel as if I have my family back and I think that I was able to let go of the resentment I had because of you, Liz.”

“Max, I didn’t do anything. You have a huge heart that even I can see and I’ve only known you for a few days. I’m so happy that you and your parents have worked things out.”

Max just smiled at her and placed his hand over hers. “Liz you were there for me when I needed someone to not judge me, not ask a million questions, and just to listen. Thank you.”

Liz just nodded, smiling as she raised her eyebrows. “So you’re staying?”

“New York can wait. I have more important things here.” Max said knowing she would think he was referring to his parents and Cassie which partly he was, but really he wanted to spend more time around her. Even though they could only be friends.

She opened her arms and hugged him, telling him how glad she was that he had made a wonderful fresh start and let go of so much pain, and would be staying with the Evan’s for a while longer.

He felt wonderful as his arms came around her in a friendly yet intimate hug and heard her words of encouragement.

Nothing could stop the smile that was plastered on his face as she hugged him, even just as a friend.

Nothing could stop the feelings he was feeling as he closed his eyes, feeling contentment in her arms.

Nothing could stop him though from leaning back and looking into her beautiful chocolate eyes.

And Nothing could stop him from leaning in towards those perfectly peach lips…

…………….

As always, Let me know what you think! Is it crap? Is it above crap? Or is it below crap? Lol j/k. But any feedback, comments, or suggestions are always read and appreciated! You guys are wonderful.

Summary: Max and Liz in my own crazy world that I have created. ‘sigh’ need I say more?..

Part 14

Liz’s breathing almost ceased to a complete halt when she saw Max’s eyes travel down to her lips. He was still smiling from telling her the news, and she was too because his was always so contagious.

Her eyes fluttered closed though,as his smile got serious and leaned in toward her. She was preparing of the contact of his lips upon hers when the luscious things went for her right cheek instead. Still, her eyes fluttered from the contact and she her breathing was getting faster and faster as was his.

He pulled back a little, watching her face as her eyes fluttered open. Still trying to remain calm and not go in for her lips like he had planned to, he let out a sigh.

Well that was quickly interrupted though by her lips crashing down on his.

What the hell was she doing?? He had innocently kissed her on the cheek and when she saw his hot gaze on hers she couldn’t resist.. she had to taste him.. even just once.

Quickly realizing what she was doing, she pulled back just as the bedroom door open, but she was still close enough where you could probably tell what they had been doing.

Max just lost all awareness and stared into her eyes, completely speechless.. SHE had kissed HIM..

“Elizabeth?” The red-haired woman squinted her eyes in the doorway as she saw a man, not Kyle, leaning in close to her daughter.

Liz just froze in her tracks as she looked at her mother’s shocked face.

“Mom??” She blinked, then realizing how close she was to Max’s face who was as shocked as she was to see the woman who appeared to be Liz’s mother in the doorway.

Had she witnessed the moment that they just shared? The moment he wouldn’t forget as long as he lived…

“Oh Mom! Hi!” Liz panicked, quickly getting up from the bed and walked over to hug her mom and forced a smile.

“What are you doing here?? I was going to call you tomorrow to ask you and daddy to come..”

Nancy Parker just suspiciously looked over at the handsome young man who looked completely dazed on the bed. She didn’t know ‘what’ she had walked in on, but this young man was not going to mess up her daughter’s chance at a future with one of the most talked about new lawyers in Roswell. Sure he was handsome, but from his appearance she could see that he was no Kyle Evans.

He had sports shorts on and just a black t-shirt with a what was it… ‘The Verve?’ on it?

Clearly he didn’t dress like the other classy man.

“Mom?” Liz questioned, embarrassed that her mother appeared to be shooting Max death rays.

“Kyle Called,” She looked back over at Liz who was now looking flushed. She managed to choke out “Ky..Kyle?”

“Yes Elizabeth, you’re boyfriend. Remember?” Nancy questioned.

Liz’s eyes widened as the realization hit her. Damn him! He had called them without even telling her! She was really starting to hate him keeping things from her. She needed more time to prepare!

“I’m sorry, Kyle failed to tell me about this.” Liz rolled her eyes.

“He said he wanted to surprise you. We were supposed to be here hours earlier but we got stuck in traffic on the way. Who is this?” Nancy Parker finally asked, nodding her heads toward Max on the bed.

Geez, could she be anymore ruder? Liz loved her mom but she was a little too overprotective sometimes. “Mom, this is Max... Evans. Kyle’s brother. Max, this is my mother, Nancy Parker.”

Max quickly got up to shake the woman’s hand but as they did, he still felt uneasy about her staring at him like that. Did she suspect that he was infatuated with her daughter?

Nancy let out a breath.. so… he was related to Kyle.. surely her daughter wasn’t crazy enough to pull something with a family member of her boyfriend. Still, he needed to be kept an eye on.

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Parker.”

“Same here, Max. You have a wonderful brother. He’s been very good to my Lizzie, here.”

Liz just blushed and wondered how much of that statement was really true..

Max just slightly nodded, biting his lip from saying anything rude about his brother because obviously, Liz’s mother liked him.

“Where’s daddy?” Liz asked after a moment of silence.

“Oh he’s downstairs with the Evanses. We just met your parent’s Max. They’re such lovely people.” Nancy smiled, a little more relaxed now.

Again, Max just nodded, but smiled this time. A few days ago he would have had the urge to roll his eyes or comment crudely on them, but things had literally changed overnight. He was actually going to try this time with them.

“I came up here to get you to come down to the living room, Kyle said that you both had something to tell us. I can only wonder what it is..” Nancy smiled, already guessing that her daughter and that fine young man were engaged. Though she thought Elizabeth was still a little young, and still worried about that, she at least picked a decent one.

She wanted only the best for her daughter.

“I’ll see you down there in a few minutes, honey.” Mrs. Parker stated as she nodded to the both of them.

She let out a breath as her mother left the room.

“Oh God…Max…” She searched for words as she thought of the kiss, her mom walking in, and the conversation about to happen.

“Liz.. You don’t have to say anything, really.” He looked towards the ground.

“It’s just that we…”

“We were caught up in the moment.. that was all.” He stated. He searched in her eyes, looking to see if there might have been anything else there, but she turned her head.

Though she was kinda hurt at the statement, thinking that was all he thought it meant, she nodded. She didn’t want to have to deal with telling Kyle.

“Yeah.. you’re right. I’m so sor..”

“Don’t be sorry, it’s alright.” He told her, touching her cheek. It was more than alright he thought, it was amazing.. the feeling of her lips on his made him come alive more than he could ever remember.

She just nodded again and tried not to close her eyes, reveling in the feel of his hand on her cheek.

“We better go on down there..” Liz turned towards the door and grimaced. She soo did not want to have this conversation with her parents right now.

“Yeah...” He started, trying to avoid her eyes.

“Right..” She said, wondering why he wasn’t looking at her.

“Okay..” He looked towards the door, pressing his lips tightly together.

“Max…” She sighed, looking down. She knew he felt something too…

“I know…” He finally caught her gaze, and nodded sympathetically.

“But we…” She started, knowing he knew what she was saying without actually saying the words.

“I know…” He nodded again and touched her chin for a moment.

“So this can just be…” She wanted to make it clear.. more for herself than anything.

“I know, Liz. I know.” He moved his finger from her chin to her luscious lips, wanting to feel them with his fingertips one last time.

“So.. friend’s then..? Liz asked as she held out her hand, more of trying to stating a fact to try to convince herself.

Max breathed in as he took his finger from her lips and shook her hand, holding it longer than a normal handshake would.

He sighed and managed a smile. At least he’d have her in his life in some form.

“Friends.”

………………..

“Diane, you have such a lovely home. I hope that Jeff and I aren’t imposing on you like this since it is getting late and all. Kyle had just insisted that we come tonight for some news that he and Elizabeth wanted to share.” Nancy said, sipping on her wine.

“Oh not at all Nancy! We have plenty of room for you and Jeff, plus your guest. That’s one of the reasons why we bought this house, so we could have all the guests we want, comfortably. Diane insisted. She liked Liz’s mom already and was happy to have them there. After all, they would be coming part of the family soon, even if they didn’t know it yet.

Phillip, Jeff, and Kyle were discussing Kyle’s career and Phillip told how his son was brightly following in his footsteps. Jeff watched the young man out of the corner of his eye. He really liked Kyle, he had a promising future ahead of him for sure, but he wasn’t sure he was right for his Lizzie. He still thought of her as his baby girl and of course, and he feared that tonight the news they were going to get would take her away from him. He knew that he wasn’t being very logical and that his baby girl was in fact a woman now, perfectly capable of making her own decisions, but it still made him want to keep an eye on things.

“Hey Daddy.” Liz smiled, walking in the living room with Max following behind her. He took a seat at a chair by the wall, not wanting to intrude. He started to return to his room but she grabbed his hand, telling him to come downstairs so he could go ahead and meet her father. All thoughts had been lost though, the moment she grabbed his hand once again.

Liz hugged her father, smiling at Kyle and giving him a “we will talk later,” look. Damn. He was getting a lot of those here lately.

“Hi sweetie, I was just talking to Phillip here about Kyle’s promising future. You never told me that Kyle’s father was a successful lawyer as well.” Jeff smiled, complimenting the man a little older than he.

Liz just smiled. “Well Kyle wasn’t really one to talk about his family that much, before.” She replied, looking at him and raising an eyebrow.

He just coughed. “Well, I think we should go ahead and discuss why I asked you and Mrs. Parker to come here.”

Jeff nodded and took a seat next to Nancy on the couch.

“Yes, I think so too. I’m sorry we are so late, traffic was horrendous due to a wreck on the interstate.”

”It’s alright. As long as you both are here so Liz and I can tell you the good news.”

Kyle started out telling why he loved her and then proceeded to talk about himself for the next five minutes, boasting on how he had got offers from excellent law firms all across the country.

Liz felt bad for tuning him out, but she had heard all of this before.

So instead, she focused her eyes on Max, who was sitting in a chair against the wall, looking like he was being tortured. Maybe she shouldn’t have asked him to come down here to listen to a brother he didn’t care for, and she told him she wanted him down here to meet her father which was somewhat true, but she really needed him here, just in the room with her, for support. For some reason just having him around soothed her, calmed her to no end.

Then she thought of the kiss.

THE kiss.

A kiss that she had acted like was a mistake she had made, when infact, she’d do it all over again.

That was the part that scared her.

But at the same time, it had made her feel more alive than she had felt in a really long time.

She looked up though when Max returned her gaze with a questioning look in his eyes.

Had he been thinking about it too?

“Isn’t that right honey?” Kyle squeezed her hand and the parents were all staring at her.

“I’m sorry.. what was that?” Liz blushed, looking at the snow white rug underneath the extravagant coffee table in the middle of the room. Kyle looked at her questionably.

“I just said how we were ready to take the next step in our relationship.” He squeezed her hand hard as he had caught what she was looking at.

“Oh..” Liz pondered for a moment, considering if she was really ready to take that next step. With Kyle.

“Liz…?”

“Oh, yes. Absolutely.” Liz nodded, peeking a glance at Max again who was staring down at his hands.

Jeff caught his daughters glance at the silent young man sitting next to the door, wondering who he was. A brother perhaps? He really didn’t look like Kyle though…

“Well?” Nancy asked, noticing Liz’s hesitance.

Liz looked over at Kyle, who she realized then that he was going to make her be the one to tell her parents. It only seemed fair right? He had told his.

Right. She could do this.

“Oh! Right.. Um.. Momma.. Daddy.. kyleandiaregettingmarried.” She mumbled, sounding like it was more of like she was about to be scolded for doing something wrong than she was telling about happy news.

“What was that sweetie?” Nancy asked, knowing what her daughter had said, but she really needed to speak up more. It wasn’t polite to mumble.

“Kyle and I…” She forced a smile, willing herself to be happy. “We are getting married!”

“Oh Honey!” Nancy got up fast to go hug her daughter, while Jeff got up to shake Kyle’s hand.

After some more brief conversation, more congratulations and questions, tears of joy and fear of losing her baby girl from Mrs. Parker, and some more hugs from both sets of parents for their grown-up children, goodnights were said for the evening.

Liz finally sighed, wanting nothing more than to go talk to her best friend, but knowing that her and Michael were already asleep. She had already quietly worn him out for the evening.

She looked over and sighed at the empty chair sitting next to the wall as she exited the room behind everyone.

True, Max Evans had made things more complicated in her life, but he had made things that much better for her.

…………………

Kyle ran back down the stairs to get his cell phone he had left downstairs, when he heard the doorbell ring.

Looking around, shaking his head wondering why they even still had a butler, he answered the door himself.

“Miss Me?”

“Tess…”

Hey Everyone! Thought it was overdue time for a shoutout and feedback to you guys's comments and fb :) The new part is almost done, seriously i have like two paragraphs to go so I will try to post it this weekend.

First off, Thanks to EVERYONE for all the feedback and comments.

:waves to: anonymousarfan, behrlyliz, g7silvers, roswellluver, kay_b (hey girl!), BehrObsession, Natz, Behrsgirl77, AZfire (hey sweetie! thanks for your help ;)), cherie, abbs007, Alien614, Dreamer06 Hey guys! Thanks!

frenchkiss70[/b] - our lizzie is such a confused girl right now. shes not a bad person, she thinks that shes doing whats right but she doesnt realize shes not doing whats right for herself.. shes listening more to her head than to her heart. that kiss though did stir up some things though!

extingman - Yes, Tess is Liz's cousin so the family just thinks that shes there because of that. But we and Kyle know better ;) Although Liz isnt completely clueless, she still doesnt trust Tess. Also, Tess's reputation isnt THAT much of a secret around Roswell so the law firm would accept Liz's wholesome image more I guess than that of Tess's.

As for Phillip, he sees more than what he leads on, but he probably understands more about what law firms expect of their employees and partners than anyone else would in the family, although he just wants his son to be happy yet successful in general.

The next part will be here in a few days so keep checking! I dont think I missed anyone in this shout out but just in case thanks and youre awesome too!

until next time you wonderful people,
muah.

Summary: Max and Liz in my own crazy world that I have created. ‘sigh’ need I say more?..

Part 15

“Miss Me?” Tess asked as she dropped her suitcase next to her.

“Tess…” Kyle stood wide-eyed as he looked his mistress up and down, coming to his senses.

”What the hell are you doing here?!” He whispered harshly as he shut the door behind her, grabbing her arm to go around the house.

“Umph! Let go of me!” Tess struggled, not wanting to get her new heels in the grass.

“Tess. What are you doing here? Liz and everyone is here!” He demanded answers, scared she was going to blow it for him, and not in a good way.

She just giggled, and put her hand on his arm.

“Silly rabbit, I know that. Why do you think that I asked Uncle Jeff and Aunt Nancy to bring me? No one is at my house this weekend and I asked them to take pity on poor…” She went up to him and put her hand on his chest.

“Lonely…” She continued, moving her hand lower.

“Me…” She toyed with his zipper.

Kyle closed his eyes for a second and grabbed her hand, right when Liz walked through the front door.

“Kyle..?

Max lay on his bed, strummed his guitar, singing softly along to John Mayer, and thinking about the long night’s events.

Excuse me Mrs. busybody

He had reconciled with the people that he thought he would never want to talk to again, after a petite brunette opened his eyes and made him realize that is what his sister would have wanted.

I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side

He knew now what brushing against heaven was like as the memory on his lips remained.

But one of the few
To stand back and wait for you

Excuse me Mrs. busybody
Could you pencil me in when you can?
Though we both know that the worst part about it
Is I won't be free when you wanted me
If you wanted me
If you wanted me

He knew that it would be a long way to go before his brother and he reconciled, since they had never been ‘that’ close to begin with. He couldn’t believe that fate had handed him such a card, a card that had the first woman he had such strong feelings for in such a short amount of time, in the arms of the wrong man.

In the arms of the wrong Evans.

The woman of his dreams was gone before he even had her.

Oh, I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side
Life as the man on the side

I fell in love with a dream that I built of you
Playing the part of the queen
Taking my own advice
I'm giving up tonight
Good luck to you and the king

He continued, singing softly, not realizing that the door was halfway open and someone was listening on the other side...

Excuse me Mrs. busybody
Could you pencil me in?
Though we both know that the worst part about it
Is I would be free when you wanted me
If you wanted me
If you wanted me

I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man
You know life as the man
Living life as the man on the side…

The door softly opened as Maria walked in clapping.

……………….

“Liz! I uh.. I found your cousin out here wandering around I’d thought I’d show her to the front door!” Kyle made the excuse, walking up to the front steps.

“Hi..Uhm… Tess? What are you doing here?” Liz asked, suspiciously.

She had never been close to her cousin, it was her mother’s step brother, Ed Harding’s daughter. Tess had always kind of been rather snotty and jealous towards Liz, and she and Maria often joked of how the curly blonde would probably one day end up with 5 kids by 5 different fathers, as much as she got around.

“Oh Lizzie! How are you!? Your wonderful parents decided to have me tag along since Daddy is off on business and I was just so lonely there.” She pinched Kyle’s butt a little where Liz couldn’t see, and he yelped a little, giving her a ‘stop it’ look.

Liz just mouthed an “ohh..” Her mother always had a weakness for anyone not having any family around.

“Kyle here tells me that you and he are getting married! Congratulations.” Tess gave her fake grin and placed her hand on his arm in front of Liz, and looked at Kyle who looked as if his eyes were about to pop out of his head.

“Kyle we must get to know each other better, since you will be part of the family and all.” She winked and he just looked back at Liz.

Liz just sighed, surprisingly not jealous of the situation and folded her arms. “Well, .before you do that, I need to speak with my fiancée, if you don’t mind.”

“Oh of course, you two lovebirds go right ahead. I’ll show myself around.” She grinned, patting Kyle’s back and walking towards the door, raising her eyebrows at Liz as she walked past her.

“What was that about?” Liz scrunched up her nose, as she walked towards Kyle.

“Oh.. uh…I don’t know..heh. I was surprised to see her here.” He said nervously, wringing his hands.

“You were surprised? You’ve barely even ever talked to Tess. How do you think I felt… she and I aren’t exactly close.”

“Heh. Yeah.. uh hey what was that you wanted to talk to me about?” He asked.

“Oh that..”

Suddenly she gave him a quick smack on the back of the head.

“Damnit!”

“That was from Maria for me to you because YOU didn’t tell me they were coming.”

“Liz, baby, didn’t you want them to know?” He asked, still rubbing his head.

”Yes of course, but I was going to call them tomorrow. Your parents must be stressing at how many of my friends and family members are staying here now, especially arriving at like, midnight.”

“Oh Liz, they live for this stuff. They’ve always loved having a crowded house.” He said waving his hand.

“Well, from now on, anything else that you plan, you might want to include me in next time.” She said, folding her arms again.

“I’ll remember that. Damn.”

“Okay, just so you know.” She grinned. She hadn’t meant to smack him ‘that’ hard but once Maria heard the news of Kyle not telling anyone her parents were arriving, she had told Liz it better be hard.

“Well.. I’ll see you in the morning then.” He smiled, coming towards her, relieved that she didn’t sense anything about him and Tess.

She was going to kiss him before she said goodnight, but something, she didn’t know what, stopped her.

“Goodnight Kyle.”

………………

“Bravo. You have a good voice, girlfriend” Maria said, nodding her head.

Max blushed, putting his guitar away. “I didn’t know anyone was listening.”

“Oh well, don’t mind me. Anyways, great song. Especially when sung from the heart.” She smiled, picking up the guitar and strumming a few chords.

“It was just a song I was practicing.” He shook his head, trying to not let Liz’s best friend know the obvious, that he was singing from the heart.

“Riiight.”

“Knock, Knock.” Liz said, mimicking knocking on Max’s open door.

“Hey, come in.” Max said lamely, his heart fluttering and his words wanting to stammer every time he saw her.

“Heyy chica. Did Kyle get my message?” Maria laughed.

“Yeah. I’m sure he thanks you.” Liz laughed. God that laugh he thought… He could just drown in her eyes, her laugh, and just the aura she seemed to give off, forever.

“You’ll never guess who else is here, ria.” Liz said, shaking her head and trying not to get distracted by Max, who seemed to lean in closer to her on his bed.

“Ummmm….Gavin DeGraw?!” Her best friend said, grinning. Gavin DeGraw was her current favorite male singer, not to mention delicious.

“Maria..” Liz rolled her eyes.

“Oh come on, Lizzie…”

“Tess.” She crinkled her nose.

“Ew?! Are you serious!?” Maria asked, crinkling her face up as well. Maria hated that girl, mainly because she used to flirt with Michael all the time when they first started dating.

“Yep. My parents apparently brought her along because they felt sorry for her. But you know how she is..”

“Like a leech.” Maria said rolling her eyes.

Max just yawned and asked “Who is Tess?”

Liz just looked at him and a brief thought of fear crossed her mind as she thought that if Tess saw Max, she’d probably try to flirt with him. So she just had to make sure that didn’t happen… for his sake of course. Tess was no good for a guy like Max.

She started to open her mouth with Maria interrupted.

“Liz’s evil bitch-whore cousin who gets plunged more than stopped up toilets do every year.” Maria deadpanned. Liz laughed; her best friend always had weird, creative yet sometimes disturbing ways to describe her cousin.

“Ohh..” Max just said, trying to shake the image of what Maria described.

“Yeah.. she’s kind of a…” Liz didn’t want to seem overly rude about her Tess to Max, but what Maria said was true.

“A tramp? A hoe? A skank A….” Maria started rambling on and Liz covered her best friend’s mouth with her hand and nodded over to the door.

Tess walked in just then. “Oh Maria.. It’s so un-nice to see you again... I haven’t seen you around lately since you’re mother’s shop always seems to be closed these days..” she smiled, looking down at her nails.

“Oh it’s not closed that much Tessie, it’s just that it’s closed more than you’re legs are these days.” Maria smiled and Max and Liz both looked at each other, trying to suppress their laughs.

Tess just made a face at the girl and looked to the hott guy sitting on the bed with the two losers. “Oh hiiii! I’m Tess! And you are?” She held out her hand, bending over so he could get a clear shot of her cleavage in her low cut shirt.

“Uh.. Hi I’m Max.” He said uncomfortably, looking over to Liz for help when she wouldn’t let his hand go. So this is Kyle’s brother.. she thought. Hmm..

“Tess we were kind of in the middle of something.” Liz tried to say politely.

“Oh of course. Will you be a while?” Tess still tried to remain nice to her mousy cousin, getting in her graces might come in handy later. She also wondered if she had time to sneak into Kyle’s room.

"Yeah we will. Buh Bye." Maria waved and faked a grin.

Tess left the room and Maria got up shaking her head. “Well, I’m gonna go crash. Liz, your mom told me to tell you to be up early.”

“Why?” Ugh. Her mother knew how much she loved sleep.

“We are going wedding dress shopping girlfriend!” Maria shrieked. She was thinking of trying some on herself, just incase her boyfriend got a clue one day.

“Tommorrow?! Isn’t that fast?” Liz asked, gulping.

“Well you’re mom wanted to help you pick out a dress before they go home and you do only have three weeks chica.”

Liz just sighed and nodded. Max saw this, thinking that she didn’t seem too happy about this when she should be.

Maria grinned and suddenly a lightbulb went on in her head.

“Max. You’re coming with us.”

“Do wha?” He blinked. Was she crazy?

Liz just looked at her friend suspiciously. What was that girl up to?

“Yeah! It’s perfect! We need a guys opinion and Mikey sure is NOT going to go. And Kyle can’t go because of all that traditional bullshit. So you have to go!” Maria grinned and nodded her head, thinking this was going to be fun.

“Maria, I’m sure Max has better things to do than go shopping with all females.” Liz shook her head, sending a sympathetic look towards Max.

“Max, what do you have to do tomorrow?”

“Uhm.. well nothing…”

”Good. It’s all set then. Be up early.” Maria nodded her head as if that was final and walked out of the door, shutting it behind her, winking and smiling at her best friend as she gave her a dirty look.

She turned back to Max on the bed and sheepishly hid her head. “You don’t have to if…”

“I want to.” He said simply, looking down. Max wasn’t the type of guy who usually enjoyed shopping with women but if it involved spending more time around his new ‘friend’ then he would take it.

“Okay. Thank you Max.” She furrowed her brows, wondering what he was thinking, and placed her hand on his.

The two just sat there for a minute, staring, with unspoken words, unexpressed feelings, and electricity flowing through them with the contact of their hands.

“Goodnight Max.” She said, not moving.

“Goodnight Liz.” He said, not moving.

With a sigh she made an attempt to get up and he grabbed her arm, starting to say something but as usual, words failed as she looked up at him, expectantly.

He drew in a shaky breath and thought of the appropriate thing to say instead.…

“I’ll see you in the morning.”
