I am back as promised. Thank you all for being so patient and wonderful. :D
Also as a warning this chapter alludes to mind rape, and physical rape. There is nothing described, there are no details. But there is no doubt that is what occurred.

Chapter 9

Nicholas stood in front of his master. He tried with all the strength he possessed not to flinch or cower under Kivar’s piercing gaze, and the weight of his dissatisfaction. “My lord, we went to the address we recovered from the dialing device and learned the former queen has returned to Earth.” Nicholas paused and braced himself for the blow he was sure to receive for imparting this news to his master. “I am sorry, my lord, but you know we can’t go there, not through a gate leastways.”

Kivar swore in frustration, “What do you mean she went back to Earth? Have you any clue how hard it will be to get to her there, now that those simpletons have learned ‘aliens’ as they so tritely put it, exist?” He took a deep shuddering breath, anger coursing through him. He wanted nothing more than to reach out and strike Nicholas until he heard the man’s bones crunch under his blows. He craved the sight of Nicholas’ blood on his hands.

But it wouldn’t do to destroy the man in a fit of rage; not right now when he could still be of use. Closing his eyes momentarily, he pictured a planet he ruled; a galaxy that bowed to him and only him. He pictured that goal he was working toward and refused to be thwarted. “We need to find away to lure her to us.” Kivar smiled, and Nicholas was thankful his master’s eyes were closed because he couldn’t repress the shudder of fear that coursed through his body. “I am sure I know the one thing that will have her come running for two simple reasons; first, because she will want to know if it is true. Second, once she knows it is the truth, she will stop at nothing to rescue my pretty toy.”

Kivar turned and walked toward the dais. The petite blonde in question sat at the foot of his throne. Her long golden hair spilled over her back, and her green eyes glittered with the love he had created. Mind warping was such a lovely talent. Kivar stroked her hair, and she leaned into his touch, “Yes, Liz will stop at nothing to rescue you, my dear Maria. She may think you died, but she will soon know otherwise. Then she will come to me, and everything I have ever wanted will be firmly within my grasp.”

“Nicholas, get word to those peasants on Earth and have them relay a message to the Parker whore. It is time to let her know her childhood friend is alive and under my control.” Nicholas nodded and quickly left the room. He didn’t want to watch Kivar sitting and stroking his mistress’ burgeoning stomach.

“You know that still looks like a garage door opener to me.” John walked around the room poking and fingering things as he spoke. Sam and Rodney were having geekgasms over the device Liz had brought with her. Not to mention the test results they had acquired from him, Liz, and the General. The look of excitement in Sam and Rodney’s eyes had almost frightened him.

“Oh yes, Major, I am sure that is exactly what it is because we all know how fond the Ancient’s were of their cars.” Rodney never looked up as he spoke, so he missed the twitching of Sam’s mouth as she tried not to laugh. She had to admit now that he wasn’t hitting on her she mostly enjoyed his company, when they weren’t arguing that is. It was strange, other than the ‘I am smarter than you’ attitude he had a developed sense of sarcasm that was as sharp as Jack’s. This was probably why they couldn’t be in the same room together for more than five minutes at a time.

John just grinned and ignored Rodney’s derogatory tone and snide remark. “You know, I heard they had lemon meringue pie in the commissary.” John tried not to laugh at the look on Rodney’s face as his eye’s shot up to bore into his own. “So I think I’ll just go eat a piece or two. You wouldn’t want any, would you Sam?” Sam shook her head no and couldn’t help but snicker. This man definitely knew how to deal with McKay.

“Rodney? How about you?” John said seeing Rodney’s mouth was pursed into a disapproving frown.

“No, Major, I wouldn’t, and thank you so much for implying you want me to die. Hello! Citrus allergy!” Rodney turned his back on John muttering under his breath as he did. John ignored his remarks once again, then put his hands in his pockets and whistled a jaunty tune as he left the room.

Rodney watched him walk out of the room while frowning, that man was going to be the death of him. The more time he spent with John, the more he was convinced of it.

Daniel pored over several old texts and his notes trying to decipher the tablet Liz had brought. It was Ancient, yet the wording was strange. It was almost as if it were a riddle; a code might be another explanation he mused to himself as he scribbled down something else. He had to admit that he was distracted. Even with this puzzle sitting before him he thought about her. He had never had this happen. His work had always consumed him, causing him to block out even the need for sleep and food.

More often than not he would lock himself away, and at some point, Jack would come and drag him down to eat or force him to go home and sleep. Daniel frowned, they were going to have to talk soon; he had seen the looks Jack had shot at him in the lab. Daniel knew Jack was concerned. Hell, he was too. He had never fallen this hard or fast before, and Hathor didn’t count. (Except on Alternating Thursdays… But it was a Tuesday so he was good.)

Daniel couldn’t explain his instant attraction to Liz, or why he just knew from the moment he saw her she was what he had been waiting for. Jack might not understand. How could he, when Daniel couldn’t understand it himself? He just knew that Liz was his future.

~*~

Jack sat and listened intently as Liz spoke. Her words had struck a type of desperation in his heart he hadn’t known in years.

“Sam is fracturing, her sprit is fragile right now, and it has a lot to do with the emotional stress she has been under. Right now she feels very much alone. She is adrift… fractured. Between the loss of her father, her break up with Pete, and her unaired emotions concerning you, she is on the verge of a breakdown. She has many choices, truthfully, but there are three that are the most likely ones. All three have you at the center in some way.”

Liz was solemn, and her confidence was such that Jack knew what she spoke was the truth. The thought that he might lose Sam forever left him shaky. He had always comforted himself with the knowledge that there was time for him to deal with his feelings toward Sam and what they really meant, but now, there was no more time.

He had to act and that thought terrified him; not that he was a coward, never that. He had faced death, torture, being stranded on an alien world. Hell, he had faced down Ba’al, who tortured him to death and tossed him in a sarcophagus to resurrect him just to do it all over again. He could handle that, but talking about his feelings… that was a whole other ball game.

“Jack, you need to make a choice too. You need to decide if she is what you want, if you love her or are in love with her. You need to tell her, because that is her turning point in all her futures. She needs an emotional anchor right now, and it has to be you or Pete. If she keeps on the path she is following right now, she will die.”

Jack sighed. He loved her, he really did, but not enough, he wasn’t in love with her. It was a close thing, and if he hadn’t met Kerry maybe… but he did. “I’ll talk to her, and then you and I need to have a talk about Daniel.”

Liz nodded; she knew this was difficult for him. “Whatever you want to talk about…I’ll happily answer.” She hesitated. “Sir, I was wondering if…if there was a way to talk to my friends’ families. To maybe call or visit them? I really need to let them know…” Her voice trailed off again.

Jack felt her pain; there was nothing worse than delivering news like the death of a love one. “I’ll see what I can do, and …ah...if you need to talk…”

Liz smiled warmly, “Thank you Jack, but somehow you and I sitting and talking about our feelings isn’t high on either of our list of priorities. I have done this before; it is just…well, I knew Maria and Kyle since almost birth, the others since I was a teen, which age wise isn’t that long ago, but it seems a life time away now.” Liz stood as she spoke, laying her hand on Jack’s arm and giving it a soft squeeze. “If it is an issue though, I won’t be afraid to ask.”

Jack nodded and felt his heart swelling with affection for this girl, no make that young woman, he hardly knew. He could suddenly see the appeal she held for Daniel. He couldn’t help but feeling, though, that no girl should have to live through or do the things he was sure she’d had to do. He recognized the weight of the pain that lived in her. Her eyes carried it and like always recognizes like. Looking at Liz was like looking in a mirror.

Chapter 10

Liz watched the flat desert fly by through her window. The occasional outcropping of almost familiar red rocks broke the monotony. Her thoughts were crowded with all that had happened over the last three days. She had spent most of her time with Jack, as Daniel was still translating and Sam seemed unable to tear herself away from the research she and Rodney were working on. Jack hadn’t talked to Sam yet, but he promised he would while Liz was in Roswell. She found it strange that she trusted him…all of them. She felt more at home in the SGC now than she had in the three years she lived on Antar.

She smiled as she remembered Jack sitting her down and telling her, in no uncertain terms, that as much as he liked her if she hurt Daniel in any way, shape, or form he would shoot her, and they would never find her body. She had shivered as he spoke because she knew he meant it with every fiber of his being. Liz also knew that she would have done the same if the situation was reversed.

She had found another kindred soul in Major Sheppard. He had joined her and Jack in having some at the newer recruits’ expense. Liz wanted to train, and Jack had come up with a plan, which is how Liz had found herself tossing several Marines and two Air Force sergeants around the gym. Jack and John had lounged against the wall in very similar poses as she went to work. The men had underestimated her, which is exactly what Jack had said would happen as Liz cleaned their clocks. Afterwards she and John watched Jack do the General thing as he dressed the men down and gave them shit duties for a week. The three of them had walked to the commissary laughing like loons.

Yesterday, she had said goodbye to her two newest friends, and, yes, even as abrasive as Rodney was she considered him a friend. He truly was one of the sweetest, dorkiest men she knew. Whenever she saw him and John bickering, it made her think of Kyle and Michael during happier times; although, there was a tension between the two of them that Kyle and Michael had never had. Before he left, Rodney had hugged her and told her to seriously consider asking to join the Atlantis mission.

Now, after three wonderful and relatively carefree days she was going home.

Home.

She was finally going back to Roswell. She wished it was for happier reasons because there was nothing about what she had to do that was happy. It was her duty to tell Amy, Jim, and the Evans’ that their children were gone. That she alone survived. She wasn’t the sort to pray, but she did and often on the plane and in the car that she would find the right words. She also wanted to visit her father’s grave and tell him goodbye. Something she hadn’t really been able to do.

Liz squinted against the sun, tabbed her window down, and turned her face into the wind. Earth was beautiful. Leaning back she sighed, then turned toward Daniel when she felt his larger hand cover her own. He was solid and warm. He was offering himself up as a buffer, for no reason other than he wanted to. He wanted to be there for her. The trust he had in her, the trust she felt for him was something that had been missing from her life for so long the feeling was still foreign.

Worry shadowed his blue eyes, and that, in turn, made her feel bad. She knew what to expect. She knew that she would face accusations and tears. That in the end, coming home would be a lot worse than if she didn't go at all. Daniel had no clue and there was no way to warn him. She couldn’t begin to explain how tight of a group they had been…how scared and so very young they had all been.

“They were everything for so long, and I know they are dead. I know it. I watched them die. But this makes it so final, worse.” Her voice sounded fragile even to her own ears, and Liz hated how weak it made her feel.

Daniel squeezed her hand tightly, “I knew Shar’e was gone the minute she was made a host. I knew it with the certainty you know your friends are dead. It just took me years to admit it. I never stopped trying and searching, but I knew I had lost her even before she died. This is the final step in letting go, but the first in moving away from your past and staring over.”

Liz took in what he said, let it settle into her and take root. He was right; this was both the first and last step, the ending and a new beginning. Maybe that is what frightened her so much; she had never been good at letting go and moving on. Even with all the death and destruction, she had seen it was a lesson she hadn’t been able to hold onto. Liz leaned her head back and watched him drive for a moment. “You are right, but then I am sure you already knew that.” She smiled softly as she spoke, “I’ll never really be able to let go of Max. You know that, right?” Liz bit her lip as she struggled to find the words to explain. She loved and hated the man. She’d killed for him, felt him die, but he was part of her. Part of everything she was now; part of who she was now too. “Every breath I take, every time I use my powers. It is all tied to him on every possible level. Sometimes,” Liz paused as she searched for the right words. “Sometimes it feels almost as if he is still here, living inside me.”

“Well then that is something we will have to figure out, isn’t it?” Daniel was calm; he couldn’t begin to understand Liz’s powers or what she had been through. He wanted to, though. He wanted to help her heal, and be a part of her life.

~*~

Jack paced around his office; he knew what he wanted to do. Hell, he had even talked about it, which was a first. Liz made it easy, though, and she had been firm. Funny how a twenty something slip of a girl could get him to do the one thing he never wanted to do. He didn’t want to lose Sam. Not ever. He would admit he was afraid but only to himself. He had failed Sara; he had lost her the second Charlie died. He had shut her out and closed himself off. Daniel had been the first person to get to him. He had refused to back away and had offered his friendship so generously that Jack hadn’t been able to walk away.

Jack took a steadying breath and headed toward Sam’s office. No more running, and no more hiding, not this time.

~*~

Daniel watched Liz carefully from the corner of his eye as he drove down Main Street. Her face was pale and her hand was trembling beneath his. He watched a slow solitary tear streak a jagged path down her cheek.

“There, just pull up in front.” Her voice was tense and small as she spoke. He watched her take a small steadying breath before she opened the car door.

“You know we could go find a hotel if you want. We don’t need to come back here till tomorrow.” Daniel knew she wouldn’t accept that offer. Even in the short amount of time he had known her, he knew she would never back down. She would push her way through whatever the problem or issue was. Liz was a fighter.

“No, but somehow I think you knew I was going to say that, didn’t you?” Liz smiled softly. It was weak, but the fact that she had made the effort warmed Daniel’s heart.

Daniel got out of the car and walked around to open her door. “Yeah, I did. It never hurts to ask though, does it?”

“No, it doesn’t,” Liz took the hand he offered and got out of the car. She held onto it tightly as he closed the car door and went to walk in to The CrashDown.

Chapter 11

Liz, once again, felt grounded by Daniel’s touch. His hand was heavy and solid against her back. She focused on that as they walked in. She tried…oh god she tried not to see Max, Michael and Isabel laughing as they sipped cherry cokes in their booth. She tried not to see Maria flirting with Michael as she gave him her orders, or Michael and Kyle laughing at the numerous dirty jokes that they had loved so much. She could still hear his constant Buddha quotes echoing in her head.

Every corner of the restaurant had memories clinging to it. Good, bad, ugly. It didn’t matter; they all assailed her mind at once clamoring for attention. She staggered under the weight of them and winced aloud. Liz turned and looked Daniel in the eye. She could see the concern there as he reached out to steady her.

“I’m all right.” Liz stood and took another step forward. Her childhood laid here, her innocent adolescent dreams. It clung to the air. She moved to the counter and saw the spot where it all began, the place where she had been shot, where Max had healed her and in that moment, irrevocably changed her life forever. She could feel the cold floor and the gut wrenching pain like it was happening right now.

She took a step closer to Daniel and gestured to the spot, “Right there is where my life changed.” She snorted as she continued, “Right there I died and became something else.” Liz felt movement around her, but it was a distant echo because all she could see was the floor. All she could feel was Daniel’s hand on the small of her back in gentle support and the pain of everything she had lost.

“Let’s go find your mother, all right?” Daniel suggested softly.

Liz nodded and looked at the tall dark haired man behind the counter. She didn’t recognize him, but then she hadn’t expected to either.

“I am looking for Nancy Parker, is she here today?” Liz’s stomach clenched and burned as she spoke her mother’s name. It had always been more difficult with her mother than her father, harder for them to connect. Liz had always been a daddy’s girl so to speak. Her father had been the one she would go to when she wanted to talk, until Max. After that, she and her father drifted apart, and her mother became almost a stranger.

The man stopped wiping down the counter and stared at her for a moment, his eyes questioning as he stepped closer. “Liz?” his voice questioning. “You’re Liz, aren’t you?”

Liz almost took a step back, “Yes, yes, I am but I don’t think I know you.” She kept her voice firm and steady, refusing to let the fear and nervousness she felt show.

The man looked away and shuffled his feet for a moment before looking back at her. “Well, you wouldn’t. My name is Nathan, Nate. I married your mom almost two years ago now, but I thought, we thought, you were dead. In fact, everyone does.” His tone had suddenly changed, and accusation dripped off of every word.

“Look, Nate, I don’t have a lot of time, and you have no right to censor me. You know nothing about me. Is my mother here or not?” Liz’s tone was harsh and low. So harsh it even startled Daniel.

Nate gave her a dirty look, “Yeah, she is upstairs; let me get Marco to cover the counter.”

Liz walked past him, Daniel’s hand in hers, “Don’t bother I know the way, and you aren’t invited. I haven’t seen her in four years, and I don’t intend to have a stranger there with me when I do.” She pushed the door to the break room open as he protested and then continued up the stairs.

She paused at the top for a moment; taking a deep breath she looked at Daniel, “Are you ready?” Daniel had a bit of a shocked expression on his face but nodded.

“I am with you every step of the way, Liz; you lead I’ll follow.”

~*~

Jack watched Sam for a moment before he stepped into her cluttered, but, oh so neat office. He watched the way the light played across her features and wondered for a moment why she didn’t need glasses because her office never seemed bright enough. He watched her, oblivious to his presence, typing and muttering. She was brilliant, sexy, and he loved her. She was one of his closest friends. Now he had to break her down in order to help her regain herself.

He stepped into the room, and since Sam had yet to look up, he cleared his throat as he stepped closer.

“Sir,” Sam sat up with a start, her blue eyes wide and her cheeks flushed.

“Do you know what time it is, Colonel?” He watched Sam glance down at her watch and smiled brightly.

“Sir, it is barely 1800 hours; I am generally here much later than that.” Sam turned back to her computer for a moment and typed something else in before shutting it down. “I could do with an early night, though.”

“Good, so how about we head over to O’Malley’s for a nice steak?” Jack kept it casual, his hands in his pockets and body leaning against the door.

Sam looked startled for a moment, “Sir?”

Jack straitened up and made a sweeping gesture toward the door, “Come on, Carter, live a little. Come have dinner with me, we can talk about…Well, I don’t know, but, hey, it is better than me stuck behind that desk with a mile high stack of papers and you sitting in here. Speaking of which, why is it always so dark in here?”

Sighing, Sam stepped out into the hall “Are we even allowed in there yet? I mean after that…”

Jack cut her off, that mischievous smile firmly in place, “Perks of being a General. They are afraid to kick me out now.” Sam laughed and shook her head as she followed him down the hall. He had gotten her out of the office, without too much fuss. Step one was complete; now, on to step two, the ‘talk’. Jack stepped into the elevator, and suddenly, he wasn’t sure if he was even going to be able to eat, not with the way his stomach was clenching.

~*~
Liz opened the door to the apartment where she had grown up. It looked remarkably the same--furniture, pictures-- nothing had changed, except her, and the fact she wouldn’t see her father. She could picture him sitting on the couch laughing, his head back and his face covered in a huge smile. One she wouldn’t see again. She regretted, and not for the first time, listening to Max about not contacting their families before they left.

Firmly holding on to Daniels hand, she walked toward the kitchen; she could hear her mother humming as she cooked. She turned to look at Daniel, “Could you…I mean...”

Daniel smiled freely, understanding the need for her to be alone with her mother, and she knew she had no right to see the light fill his eyes, “I’ll wait here till you need me, all right?”

Without thinking, Liz leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, pulling back she smiled and headed into the kitchen, leaving the stunned archaeologist behind.

Liz walked into the room silently, aware of how different she looked; not to mention how different she was. She watched her mother washing something in the sink and noticed her hair was shorter and a bit lighter. She took a deep breath and braced herself for whatever reaction her mother gave her.

“Mom,” Liz said hesitantly, as she watched her mother’s body go ridged and drop whatever was in her hands. Her mother took a deep breath, her hands shaking as she gripped the sink. “Mom?”

Liz watched Nancy turn toward her, eyes wide and tear-filled . She leaned back against the sink, shaking, “Lizzie?” She took a step forward, “Oh, god, Liz.” Suddenly, Liz was wrapped in her mother’s arms, and she could smell the soft scent of peaches that she always associated with her mother. As she felt her mother’s tears soaking through her shirt, the dam broke, and Liz couldn’t hold it back any longer. She felt her knees give way, and she sunk to the floor sobbing. She hadn’t allowed herself to, not since Isabel and Kyle died. Rocking back and forth, they offered the comfort that only a mother and daughter could give each other.

~*~

Daniel sat on the couch, waiting, and then he heard it…crying. He felt a weight lift off of him, he knew, because he had seen, that she hadn’t cried in a long time. He knew he would have to tell her what he had seen, a man with shoulder length, brown hair dying in her arms, Michael, was the name she had whispered. Michael, with blood pouring from his mouth as he spoke, had touched her face and told her he loved her. She had smiled, ‘Not as much as you loved Maria,’ He had shuddered and told her, with his last breath, everything would work out. Liz had sat there rocking his body in her arms, tearless, until a tall dark hair girl had dragged her away. Daniel didn’t know how to tell her, which as a linguist was a very bad thing. He just knew it would have to be soon.

He heard a noise and quickly turned, but it was only Nate. The other man paused and sat down, “Well, I guess they are going to all right.” Daniel could see the relief in his eyes and hear it in his voice as he said it.

“Yeah, I think they will be.”

If you have any reservations, feel free to pm I'll do what I can to alleviate your concerns. Also I will not be posting the week of Christmas, sorry.

Chapter 12

Daniel watched Liz as she stood outside; she was staring at the sun as it cast a fiery glow along the skyline, her face bathed in its light. He moved behind her and placed a tentative hand on her waist. He moved in closer and felt her hair brush against his chin; he couldn’t believe how tiny she was. Her pain vibrated the air around them, making him ache to comfort her.

“Liz?” She turned into him and wrapped her arms around his waist. As she rested her head against his chest, her tears soaked into his shirt; instinctively he tightened his embrace, drawing her even closer. “Liz, I am sorry. It isn’t enough I know, but I am sorry.” He felt her shudder silently and desperately wanted to erase her pain. His presence when the others had shown up was a huge part of why it had gone badly.

Liz sighed, “It wasn’t your fault, and there was nothing that you could have said or done to make it any better.” She stepped back and looked into his eyes, “I needed you there. I wanted you there, and what Philip and Diane said doesn’t matter. They have lost everything.” Daniel watched the shadows darken and dance across her face as she stepped back again. “They lost everything and I… I still have a chance at a life. One that doesn’t include their son and that hurts them as much as the fact that he and Isabel are dead.” Daniel felt her sorrow as though it were his own.

Liz turned and looked up at the stars slowly coming to life, even as the sun was still setting. “Do you ever just look out there anymore? Just look and enjoy the stars with the innocence that you did before you knew what was out there?”

Her question startled him, “No, no, not really. That is more Jack’s thing. He loves Astronomy. He has a part of his roof set up with a telescope and stares at them for hours.” Daniel chuckled, “When I stayed with him he would drag me out there no matter how cold it was.”

“Jack is, well, Jack.” Liz smiled at him as she spoke almost wistful, “I really like him. He seems so gruff but…”

“Jack always comes off that way, but he isn’t really.” Daniel shrugged, “He is the best guy I know, and he is my best friend. We fight and bicker but,” Daniel trailed off. He always had a hard time explaining how much Jack meant to him, how close they were, and how lost he would be if something happened to the older man. Outsiders didn’t understand; they couldn’t see how amazing he was or what a wonderful friend he could be.

“You’re family.” Liz stated simply. “That was what Isabel, Kyle, Michael, Maria, Max and I were. Three couples, all bound by blood and more. Today I let that go, when Amy and Jim walked into the room and saw me alone they knew. I have known them my entire life, and I watched their hearts break.” Liz covered her face with her hands and let out a broken sounding sob. “I broke them, killed their hope.” Daniel pulled her close again, letting her sob out her grief.

“Shh, no you didn’t, you gave them closure. They needed to know, and I saw for myself that Amy and Jim were as happy to see you even though they were sad to lose their own children. They were happy you are alive. They both love you; like you said, you’re family.” He rubbed a comforting hand up and down her back, doing his best to soothe her. “Come on, it has been a long day and you need to get some sleep.” He took her hand and led her to her room. “Get some rest, and I’ll be next door if you need me, alright?” Daniel brushed her hair from her face, she looked so young and vulnerable, and once again it hit him exactly how young she was compared to him. She was just twenty-two. Everything she’d seen and done made her seem older, but in this moment she looked every inch her twenty-two years. Daniel pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, “Goodnight,” and walked to his room.

Jack looked at Sam carefully; she seemed on edge, wary. It hurt to know that this was his fault. He hated the stilted, halting conversation that had taken place over dinner, and now searched for clever words to fill the silence and express how he felt.

“Ok, look, I suck at this, which, I am sure you are well aware.” He watched Sam’s blue eyes widen at his suddenly abrupt tone, “I just, well, I hate talking about…stuff.” Jack waved his hands around, visibly irritated, he couldn’t find the words he wanted, he needed to make her understand, he just hated that it was so hard.

“Sir,” Jack frowned as she said that, but she quickly corrected herself and hesitantly said, “Jack, I am not sure if I get what you are trying to say.” Her voice was laced with confusion.

“Neither am I, most of the time. Look, Sam, I think it is time to clear the air.” Jack felt his hands shake and sweat broke out on his forehead. How do you tell a woman you’re not in love with her? That you thought you were, once, but now…
He ran a frustrated hand over his face. He was afraid to look at her, but he had no choice.

“Sam, I care about you.” Jesus, he was going to throw up. “You’re one of the best officers I’ve ever worked with, one of my best friends and an amazing person. I think that maybe, I might have let you think I feel more for you than I do. I know I should have said something along time ago, but you were my second and my friend…” Jack watched her flinch.

This night kept getting worse and worse. Sam sat there as Jack fidgeted his way though the start of their conversation and felt her gut ripped apart when he started the whole ‘its not you it’s me’ speech mashed together with the ‘I love you but I’m not in love with you’ speech. Sam picked up her drink, drained it but didn’t say a word. She watched Jack watching her, and suddenly she was pissed. Heart Broken and pissed as hell.

“You are an asshole.” Sam stood up and started to walk out. She ignored Jack calling her name and then following her. She continued out the door, swiftly walking to her car only stopping because Jack grabbed her arm. Without a thought she whirled around and decked him. Watching him stagger back was uplifting, and she felt a sick twisted need to hit him again but ignored that too.

“Sam, wait…” Jack rubbed his jaw; this hadn’t gone like it was supposed too. Not at all. He watched Sam’s hands shake as she opened the car door.

“I’m taking a few days off.”

Liz was in the palace. The long hallway in front of her was cold and silent; the only sound was her footsteps and breathing. Liz knew she was dreaming; she knew she couldn’t be here and that her body was lying in bed on Earth in a sterile looking motel room in Roswell. She knew that, but she also knew she was here for a reason. She was being given a dream, a rare and prized talent. It was, when possessed by the right person, a gift used to heal the mind but in the hands of the wrong person it was a powerful weapon. She had a small glimmer of that gift; it was weak and one of the most difficult of her powers to use. There was only one other person that she knew of, who possessed it. Nicholas, Khivar’s right hand man, his iron fist and mouthpiece.

Liz looked down and saw she was dressed in a long cream-colored court gown, one that she had worn at her wedding and then her husband’s funeral. She moved forward, wary and unsure of what to expect. When she reached the door to the throne room she felt her self hesitate for only a moment before opening it.

The large room was all but empty; three people were on the dais. One on the throne was obviously Khivar, Nicholas was standing to his right and the third was a woman sitting at Khivar’s feet. Liz couldn’t tell who it was because her back was facing the door she had just entered.

“Ah, Elizabeth, How nice of you to join us,” Khivar’s voice rang out through the room and bounced off the nearly empty walls.

Liz cautiously walked forward; if they were going to attack her it would have happened by now. “Well, it wasn’t as if your lackey has given me a choice.” Liz’s tone condescending, after all she was the Queen. By the right of marriage and the seal she still wore on her shoulder. Even after Max had died, it hadn’t left, and when Michael’s appeared, it was different than hers. She could have held the throne, had she chosen too, but Michael was the warrior, the tactician. He was what was needed, whether he wanted that role or not. Khivar, for all his power, was nothing more than a pretender and a poser.

“Oh, but my dear, there are always choices. For instance, I made the wrong choice when I let you leave. You took something that belonged to me. Now, I am going to be fair because I am nothing if not fair and offer you a trade.” His voice was low and had she not known his true nature, it would have been easy to fall under its seductive power.

Liz stopped; she was twenty feet from the dais now and found herself unable to move forward. Nicholas was a smart man; he knew that even with her limited gift if she were allowed close enough, she could turn the dream against him. He had stretched his mind out further than anyone had ever reached out before, and the strain had to be immense. “Khivar, I cannot, in all honesty, think of one thing you possess that I want.” She laughed as she said it, but her laugh froze in her throat as the woman at Khivar’s feet turned around. “Maria?” She tried to step forward, only to be shocked by the shield in place.

Khivar stood and petted Maria’s long blonde hair, “Yes, isn’t my pet beautiful.” He squatted down beside her and stroked her swollen stomach as she rubbed her cheek against his shoulder. “And look she bears my heir.” Khivar looked toward Liz, “Are you quite certain I have nothing you want?”

Fury coursed through her, “How dare you take a member of my court as a prisoner and consort? How did you manage it? She was dead!”

“If you remember correctly, my dear deposed queen, the body of your friend was never recovered, and when you finally found remains you thought they were hers. They were, in fact, not because she was already firmly in my grasp by that time. Her husband, her friends, her loyalties were all long forgotten. She knew only me.”

Liz struck out at the shield barring her from the vengeance she wanted; it held even though she saw Nicholas flinch. “You are the vilest creature I have ever known, and I have met many who qualify for that position. What do you want?” Liz spat out her words, her eyes flashing with power and rage.

“For shame, Elizabeth, I had expected better of you than this.” Liz could see the look of joy on his face, and the gloating tone he used only served to enrage her more. “I want the keys to the Granolith.”

Liz laughed, “You are mistaken if you think that you will ever be able to use them, even if I were to make that trade…”

Khivar laughed, “Oh but I can, my dear, I can.”

She stood tall, her shoulders straight and her head held high, “You will die by my hands, make no mistake. You have greatly underestimated me and that will be your downfall. I am going to come for you, Khivar; you have violated whatever grace I still possessed. I never accepted the powers that would have come to me as Queen of this planet. I will now, and once I do, you will find me a formidable foe because you lack the seal and the blood required to wield the true powers of a King. I will be your downfall; my face will be the last thing you ever see.” Liz closed her eyes, as she finished speaking Khivar flew into a furious rage, Liz ignored the shouts and venomous slurs as she pulled herself out of the dream.

Liz sat up, her body shaking and cold, despite the rage that infused her. She had a despot to kill, a friend to rescue, the Granolith to protect and a world she didn't want to reclaim.

Chapter 13

Daniel awoke to silence. He was used to the stillness of the desert it had been his home and in many ways, always would be. He was born in Egypt; it was in his blood, his lungs and in the deepest part of his soul. Some of his best memories were from his first eight years there and still even after all this time he missed the large expanses of sand. New Mexico wasn’t Egypt, it wasn’t even Abydos, but it was similar in small ways, which were just enough to cause a small ache of homesickness. Even after all these years.

Glancing at his watch Daniel noted how early it was and dressed quickly. He already felt the first twinges of caffeine lust and decided breakfast was in order. Daniel listened for a moment than smiled when he heard nothing coming from Liz’s room, she needed the rest. Especially after the emotionally draining day she’d had; he quickly decided that he would let her sleep and would breakfast back so they could eat it together. Smiling he snagged his keys and turned to head toward the door only to have a white sheet of paper they were sitting on drift down to the floor. Puzzled, he picked it up, and read….

<I> Daniel,

Sorry for sneaking in to leave this, but I didn’t want you to worry. And I knew you would. I woke early and decided to head out to the desert for some ‘exercise’, the kind I can’t do here. I am leaving you directions and I would really like it if you came out to meet me.

Liz</I>

He glanced over the directions, frowning briefly, and headed out the door. So it was breakfast to go instead.

~*~

Daniel turned off the road and headed toward the outcropping Liz had indicated she would be by. He looked around and couldn’t see a car, for a brief moment he thought he had misread the directions but then noticed a motorcycle off in the distance. He wondered where Liz had picked it up at while pulling up next to the bike. Daniel noticed it was an older model, which Sam would have loved. He paused by the car after he climbed out, completely stunned by what he was seeing.

Liz was moving with a speed he hadn’t thought possible for a human, but than she wasn’t totally human and he needed to remember that. She was whipping around two cords with slim, lethal blades attached to the ends. Her arms crossed over in front of her then she bent backwards, her spine arching until her head almost touched the ground, and swirled them over her body. A quick flip, he barely saw it she was so fast and they were over her head, behind her, everywhere. Her body was covered in a sheen of sweat, and just when he had thought she couldn’t do anything else with her weapons, she flipped forward and backwards multiple times, her arms still spinning the unknown weapon furiously before she slid down into a split, which really had him thinking about her flexibility for a moment, than she dropped them.

Liz tossed him a wicked grin, as if she’d known he was there all the time and what he’d been think mere seconds before, and then started cooling down stretches. Those he at least recognized. He reached in the car and grabbed their drinks before walking closer.

“That was interesting,” Daniel couldn’t keep the awe from his voice, he’d known many warriors in his nine years at the SGC, but what she had just done was beyond anything he’d ever seen. She had moved with a fluid grace, her body had been in completely tune with her weapons, she <I>was</I> the weapon. He had no doubt that she was equally, if not more, deadly without them then she was with them. Beautiful and deadly, she was a dangerous combination, one he was becoming powerless to resist.

Liz bent down, snagged a towel from the top of her pack, and started to wipe her neck and arms off. She hadn’t been sure he would show up, but she had known the second he arrived, even as focused as she had been while practicing. The more she used her powers, the more she became aware of him. He was a beacon, a bright light shining in the dark and he drew her to him. It was different then what she had felt with Max, but equally compelling. She’d barely used them since they’d met, so she could hardly even imagine what it was going to be like when she started to actively use them. It frightened her and excited her at the same time.

“I learned how to use the sha’ta from Melina. She was one of the few who knew how to use them. ”

Daniel held out the water he had brought her, “Melina?” He couldn’t help but ask, Liz had sounded almost wistful as she spoke the name.

Liz dropped the towel on her bag and reached out for the water, unscrewed the cap and took a sip. “Ah, that is wonderful. Thank you.” Liz frowned for a moment; before bending down and running her free hand over her weapons, as she did they changed back into pieces of ordinary rope. She looked up at him through hooded eyes, “She was my friend and, for a lack of a better word, an assassin. I met her not long after we arrived on Antar.” Sipping her water, Liz looked out toward the oddly shaped outcropping, before looking up at him, once again. Talking about Melina hurt, but it was easier in some ways than speaking about what she had to do. It was easier than telling, or showing Daniel why she had asked him here. “I didn’t like being followed around by guards and I didn’t like having to trust people I barely knew with my safety. I wanted to learn to fight because I couldn’t, no, make that wouldn’t rely on my powers. They were still weak and often unreliable. So, when I met Melina and found out who she was and what she did I asked her to help me. We became friends and she taught me everything she could. I left her behind, I shouldn’t have and that is one of the things I regret most.”

Liz stood quietly for a moment; she missed Melina. She missed their friendship and the implicit trust she’d had for the younger girl who had become as much of a sister to her as Maria. Liz wanted Melina by her side right now; she wanted someone she could talk to who understood the nuances of what she was doing. Liz looked around; she had spent so much time here. Liz reached out and picked up the coffee Daniel has also brought her and began to drink the now lukewarm brew. She had never thought to return here, and she had thought she would she would’ve never guessed she had.

Daniel waited; any good linguist knew that being able to listen was just as essential as talking. He was good at it too, because he also knew that often times silence said more then words ever could and right now Liz was telling him that this place was filled with painful memories. Every so often her lips would pull to the side, a mockery of a frown, her dark brown eyes would darken a bit before they darted somewhere else and then a full frown would form. But the silence stretched out long enough for them to both finished their coffee and he began to worry.

“Liz, are you alright?” She looked up at him, her body had jumped a bit when he said her name, and it was almost as if she had been a thousand miles away when he called her name.

Liz turned and motioned toward the outcropping he had noticed earlier, but then it was hard not to see it. “I wanted to bring you here, I wanted you to understand something about who I am and what I will become.” Her voice became softer as she started to walk toward the rocks.

Daniel followed her and faltered for a moment as her words sunk in, “What you will become? Liz I don’t understand…”

Liz glanced at him as she began to climb, she didn’t say a word, but she did hold out her hand and offer him a reassuring smile. She didn’t know how to say what she needed to say and she couldn’t offer him an explanation, all she could do was show him.

Stepping up to where she stood he was startled when she waved her hand over the rock face and a glowing handprint appeared. Daniel felt oddly detached as he watched her place her hand in it and a door appeared and slid open.

He watched her step inside and turn to him, “Will you come with me?” He looked down to their still joined hands and nodded.

“Liz?” Daniel stopped and looked around; the sight of the empty cocoons startled him. “What are those?”

“That is where Max and the others were born.” Liz tugged on his hand, she wanted to get this done, and she knew he was curious, but she wasn’t up to explaining yet. “Come on, through here.” Liz led him to the Granolith chamber; well what had housed part of it anyways.

Liz let go of Daniel’s hand and stepped toward the controls, the Granolith was so much more than they had even known, even when future Max had used it for time travel it’s potential had remained largely untapped. She had figured out some of it, enough to know she could claim her powers here. She needed Daniel to see what she was capable of, if he wanted to be part of her life, and she really, really wanted him to be in it, he needed to know.

“This is the Granolith, or some of it. This is a…substation, for lack of a better term. It, the Granolith, can be used for many things, and I only know of a few.” Liz felt her palms sweating; when she accepted her seal everything she had ever done would be shown. Her past would be laid out for Daniel to see, every crime, every flaw and sin.

“Liz...” Daniel saw how pale she looked, but she cut him off before he could say anything else.

“I had a dream last night, and I know what I have to do.” She felt driven, and for the first time since she’d met Max, in control. “I never wanted this, I never sought this, but my powers, the Seal…they are all part of who I am and if I am to what needs to be done…” Liz stepped closer to the machine and reached out, her hand hovering over it. “I need to embrace the Seal, something I never did the entire time I lived on Antar.” She looked back to Daniel and prayed to ever god and goddess she had every heard of, be they real or not, that Daniel could accept all that she was and would be.

Chapter 14

Daniel looked at the apparently metallic walls. When he stepped through the door, he hadn’t known what to expect. Certainly not the eerie green lights that had surrounded them as soon as they entered what Liz called the granolith chamber.

The flashing green lights seemed to be scanning him. Swirling around and over him, they fluctuated in color, but always remaining some shade of green. He watched the lights pass over Liz and as they wound their way around her body, the work out clothes she wore morphed into a filmy cream-colored dress that hung down to her ankles. Looking down he saw that his clothes had also changed. He smiled briefly, the robes he now wore were a simpler version of what he wore daily on Abydos. Moments after his clothes had changed the lights around him dissipated.

Daniel glanced toward Liz toward only to find the lights encasing her had grown darker and had begun to spin faster and faster. He stepped closer, but it seemed as though the lights also acted as a type of force field. He ran his hands along the cool wall of light and noticed Liz had parted her lips. They curled up into a smile. She wore, what he could only describe as, a euphoric expression. What ever she was experiencing it wasn’t hurting her. Which meant all he could do was wait.

He turned and instantly his eyes were captured by the sight of the large cylinder shaped object in the center of the room. The object appeared to be smooth and metallic. He walked to it and found that is was cool, just like the lights emanating from it. He slowly walked around it searching for symbols or writing that might give him a clue about what was happening. He bent down to look at the bottom when Liz’s touched his shoulder, startling him.

“Daniel,” Her touch was light and her hand caressed his arm as he stood. “I am ready, and I know you have questions.” Liz’s face was a mask of serenity as she spoke, and her tone was almost melodic. It had a very formal feel to it as she continued to speak. “I promise to answer anything you ask after.”

Liz stepped closer to the object, placing her hand on it as she spoke, “This is part of the Granolith. It has had many uses; it was a transporter at one time, another it was a time machine. I also know it can be used to access other dimensions. It’s main propose hasn’t been revealed to us, and in truth it may have been lost… It has also been used in ceremonies like the one I am about to take part in.” He saw Liz falter for a second, “I had never though to do this, but...I have to.” Liz looked at him again; her brown eyes were swimming in tears. Her pain sliced through him, leaving him breathless.

“Liz, I don’t understand? Why don’t you have to do this?” He didn’t like the way she sounded.

“It’s alright, Daniel, this is just something I was supposed to do years ago and refused too.” She smiled again, this time weakly. “It is a mere formality and I promise to explain it all if you still have questions, after.” He knew she was lying, he could feel it.

“Wait,” Daniel reached out his hand to stop her but it was too late. Liz had turned toward the Granolith and placed both her hands on it. Daniel closed his eyes as the lights in the room exploded into a bright, almost blinding white light. He could hear a murmuring; it’s tone almost to low to hear but it slowly grew louder and louder.

“You must look,” A gentle hand lifted his chin. “You must bear witness to the claiming.” Daniel opened his eyes and saw a tall blonde woman in front of him. She was standing in front of the man he had seen in Liz’s mind and there was another darker haired man with them. “You must bear witness, and Liz has chosen you for the task. What you see here is her past. The things she must leave behind. We are part of that past,” The woman gestured to the man with her. “Max, Michael and I are here to help her, to guide her.”

The names spoken startled Daniel, “Wait…” but Max interrupted him…“Yes, in life, I was Liz’s husband. Isabel,” Max gestured the woman who had been speaking, “and Michael were her family.” Daniel watched the trio become less insubstantial as they spoke. Now it almost seemed as if they were standing in the room with them. Michael stepped forward; he briefly touched Liz’s hair before standing next to him.

“This will not be easy. Liz’s memories of Antar are far from pleasant, and despite all you have seen there are many things you might find offensive.”

“Are you willing?” Daniel looked to Isabel as she spoke, once more. He couldn’t help but think that she must have been a stunning woman while alive.

“Yes,” Daniel didn’t even hesitate.

Max, Isabel and Michael nodded as one and the world went gray.

Max’s body lay in state. The great hall was empty and the silence echoed through out the room. Isabel had her hand pressed to her mouth, her red-rimmed eyes still flooded with tears. Kyle’s arms were wrapped around her waist supporting her. Michael stared grimly at the seal on the palm of his hand, while Maria buried her face in his shoulder.

This was the beginning of the end.

Daniel felt something shift and turn…

Liz stumbled through the tunnel, the brutality of what she had just seen lingered. She was going to kill them all. Khivar’s elite core had destroyed innocents. Children. Pre-schoolers. Her clothes were still stiff, stained with their blood.

She and Max had fought over this, endlessly. Repeatedly, she had refused to become a weapon for him, yet here she was. Doing exactly what she swore she would never do. It was for the right reasons though, small comfort that that was.

Liz crept through the opening, silently, Melina would be proud. She watched them, laughing and celebrating their victory. Caustic, her anger burned through her like acid. It fueled her, as did the grief for the children she had read to and played with everyday.

She crept down to where they all sat. her body and mind going numb. Only her will remained. Stealthy moving in, Liz took two, her stomach heaving at the sight. The next three were even easier, as were the next two. As she stood in the middle of their camp, their blood mingled with the children’s, she felt no remorse. It was war, and she was no longer going to sit on the sidelines.

Daniel staggered under the weight of what he’d just felt and seen. He was drifting and far from what he perceived as normal, but there was no time for him to gain his bearings as everything shifted again…

Liz sat silently while she watched Michael ordering the troops and with each word, the shadows around his eyes darkened. He was King, King of a world that had destroyed his family. A world that wanted him even less than they had wanted Max. He had begged Liz to take up the mantle, pleaded with her. It was not something Michael would do lightly. His heart wasn’t in this battle, it had died with Maria.

The men slowly filtered out of the room and Liz watched Michael wilt, he had lost his will. She needed him to stay alive, to be strong and not leave her. It was cold, her desire. It wasn’t the passion she had felt for Max in the beginning. It wasn’t like the mellow love they had shared before falling apart. This was calculating, and manipulative.

She stood and meandered her way to him, dragging her hand across the smooth marble table. She knew exactly what she was doing. She had been married, but that wasn’t how she had learned to seduce. Melina had taught her that too. A good assassin used all their assets She wasn’t going to kill Michael; she was going to help him.

Liz ran her hand up his arm, she watched his pupils dilate before leaning over, “Michael, you look tense. Let me help you.” She saw a fleeting look of panic flash across features. He was going to protest, but Liz knew she couldn’t let him. She slipped onto his lap and stroked his face, “Please,” she let her voice break, just enough, before leaning down to kiss him.

“Liz, we can’t…” Michael grabbed her arms, but she leaned in, again, this time laying her head on his shoulders as she wrapped her arms around his waist. She felt him giving in, and instead of triumph, Liz felt dirtier than she ever had.

Daniel watched a thousand memories, some good, and some bad. Many were terrible. He had been to countless worlds and hadn’t seen half of what Liz had. He had never even come close to doing the things she done. Although Jack and Teal’c might have.

Liz stood alone.

She was empty.

Her soul lost.

She was waiting to be re-born.

“Will you take this burden?” Isabel’s voice startled him, “Will you be the keeper of these memories? Will you relive her of her pain and guilt, be her conscious? ” Her eyes were wide and Daniel felt as if she were reaching into his soul. He hesitated, could he live with this knowledge and if he agreed what did that mean.

“If I accept what does that mean?” Daniel looked over at Liz, her body still awash with light. She looked so young, to young to have done the things he had seen. She wasn’t Shar’e, and she wasn’t like Keria. There was no one he could compare her to, not even Sam. “What happens to her if I do?”

Michael stepped forward, “She claims the seal and becomes Queen, in fact, instead of in name. She will have access to all the power of Antar. The Granolith will allow her access. She can save Maria.”

“Wait,” Daniel’s mind shorted out, “Maria? I thought she was dead. All the power of Antar?”

“Maria isn’t dead, Khivar is holding her prisoner.” Max looked at him with gentle eyes, for a moment Daniel could see the man Liz had fallen in love with.

“Antar is where our power comes from, but we are hybrids. We couldn’t access all of it. Khivar can’t because he lacks the seal. Liz isn’t a hybrid, she isn’t an alien. She is something else entirely. If she takes the seal there will be nothing that can stop her.” Isabel threw a worried look toward Liz. “If you chose to be the keeper it will fall to you to stop her from crossing the line. Be, as Michal said, her conscious. You know from experience absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Michael walked over to Liz; he reached into the light and brushed a thumb over her cheek. “You have seen all she has done, and you have seen what she can do. Liz will always do what is necessary, despite what is costs her. No matter what it cost those around her.”

“Do you accept this charter?” Max started at him, his words ripping into him. Frantically his mind weighed the options, and he chose.

“I will.”

Work was heinous. I have an extremely nasty situation on my hands there right now and am going to be off line for a few days. I'll be back next week.

Liz still has a conscience but remember Absolute power corrupts absolutely. She may need more then she herself possesses to control her new powers. Thank you for all the wonderful feedback!

Chapter 15

Max reached out and touched Daniel’s forehead and his mind exploded. Liz’s memories intertwined with his. He could feel things shifting as they settled into place. Max could see every facet, every thought, and every feeling that Daniel had ever had.

He could hear Max’s voice, in his head. “I see why Liz chose you. You are strong enough to keep her from falling. You have more strength than anyone knows.” Daniel felt a something being pulled from him; he could sense it being twisted and molded before it was returned. He couldn’t even explain what it was; he just knew it was happening. He could feel it in every cell of his being.

Isabel’s hands joined Max’s, as did Michael’s, their voices blended as they spoke in a language he couldn’t understand. It was melodic and soothing. A rampant need to understand what they were saying coursed through him, but they were speaking to fast and there was no way for him to grasp it. When he opened his eyes he saw the green lights around them fading into a blinding white one before dispersing.

He fell to his knees, and watched Liz crumble to the ground with a soft thud before he could even think of catching her. Daniel felt his body trembling as he dragged himself across the floor. He reached Liz; she was so pale her hair was like a streak of dark paint on a glaringly white canvas. She leaned her head into his touch, her eyes fluttering open as she sighed.

“Daniel?” It was more of a question than a declaration. “Oh, god, Daniel,” her eyes glassy as tears began spill out and run down her cheeks.

“Shhh, it’s alright.” Daniel honestly didn’t know why she was crying, he just knew it was ripping him apart. Everything that had happened, despite all he had seen was beautiful. She was beautiful.

“I would have never asked you if I had known.” Liz reached up and covered his hand with her own. “I would have never asked.”

“Asked what? Me to be your guardian?” Daniel was confused, but than he had been since the moment he’d met Liz. “I could have said no.”

“I know, but I would have never…and you would never do that…this isn’t fair. Now you have no choice. It will never go away.” Liz started to sit up and as she did Daniel realized their clothes were now the same ones they’d worn when they entered.

“Liz, I don’t understand.” She turned her hands over and there were points of light. They formed a triangle on one and on the other was something that almost looked like a gate symbol. “These...” She turned his hands over and there were matching symbols only in reverse.

“This…I don’t know how to explain it.”

Daniel moved closer and wrapped himself around her. Liz shuddered and curled into his body resting her head on his shoulder. “Take your time. Maybe you can tell me about Maria first and why they said she needed to be rescued?”

He felt Liz shiver again as she buried her face in his neck for a moment. “I was … Nicholas constructed a dream for me last night. I was back in the place, in the throne room, talking to Khivar. Maria was there, her mind erased, pregnant and, god, if I had only known. He acted as if he owned her.” Liz shuddered again. “She is carrying his child. He claims he’ll trade her for the keys to the Granolith but I know he won’t, he would never trade his child away.”

Daniel was stunned. He cared about these friends of hers, friends he’d never met but now knew as well as Liz did. The way Maria laughed and smiled tumbled through his mind. Max had given him this; he knew everything about Liz now. He wasn’t ashamed to admit that some of the things she had done were well beyond the scope of his imagination.

“I wanted the power to save her, I wanted it, and I have it.” Liz’s voice took on an odd tone. It was as though she was talking to herself, she repeated the words repeatedly. “I wanted the power to save her, I wanted it, and I have it.”

“Liz!” Daniel shook her shoulders desperate to snap her out of her daze. “Liz!”

Liz snapped her head up almost cracking him on the chin. “I’m alright, I’m fine.” Daniel didn’t believe her. She was still shaking; her skin was still pale as well cold, while her lips were tinged blue.

“Come on we need to get you out of here.” Daniel stood up in one fluid motion and pulled Liz to her feet at the same time.

“Wait, I need to explain something else.” Liz trembled visibly. “I know I’ve said this but I really would have never brought you if I known.” Liz reached out and turned their hands over again. “These symbols…” Liz hesitated, closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening them than continuing. “Do you feel the soft hum in the back of your mind? It sounds like a jolt from an electric fence feels?”

Daniel stared at her for a moment before closing his eyes. He didn’t even have to search for it. It was there, a gentle persistent hum. It was almost soothing. “Yes, but what is it?” Daniel had to admit he was tired of being confused, but he quelled his frustration and waited for Liz to answer. She was looking at their hands again. Shock reverberated through him when she looked him in the eye. Her eyes were no longer brown. Her iris and pupil were as one, black as midnight.

“They, Max, forged a connection between us. Much like the one he and I shared, except as we become accustomed to it you will be able to sense how I am feeling. Even before I realize what it is. You’ll be able to stop me if needs be, that is how powerful this connection is, and it goes both ways. ” Liz dropped his hands and turned away. She wrapped her arms around herself much in the way he use to.

“Daniel, this is a permanent connection. It will always be there, no matter what happens. Soon your new gifts will allow you to see the pain of others. It will allow you to heal their minds and sprits. Your mind is organized and your innate kindness makes you perfect for that type of healing. I knew that there would be a connection but I had thought it would be a temporary one. I had no idea this would have a lasting effect on your life.” He had thought he was shocked before. It had been a mere flicker of what he felt now.

Liz turned and looked at him. Her sorrow and contrition were easy to see. “I am truly sorry.” She looked away once more before walking out. He had nothing to say. Nothing at all. Liz seemed to be able to leave him speechless at every turn.

Jack paced his office. Sam had been gone for over forty-eight hours now. She wasn’t answering her phone, no one was at her house and he was thinking of resorting to having an APB put out on her but he also knew that would just piss her off more.

Liz had laid it all out for him, terrifying him in a way he hadn’t thought possible. Jack desperately hoped he would never be in a position that had her riffling around in his brain but that was beside the point. If she hadn’t healed Sam he’d of never known how close to the edge she was, or what a good little actress she could be. But he did now and he’d also apparently fucked it up, which was par for course.

Now he couldn’t shake off the feeling of impending doom. It was sort of the same feeling he had when going out on a mission he knew was going to go south quick, or the feeling he had every time he had a conversation with Sarah. But not. This felt worse because he knew Sam was in serious trouble, trouble exasperated by his actions, or lack there of.

Sighing heavily he wished for Daniel, he was better at the emotional crap. But he was alone, and Sam was missing. Jack kicked his desk and headed off to the weapons range. He needed to blow some shit up.

Khivar laughed as Nicholas told him of the message he had sent to the pathetic forces of Earth He was looking forward to their reactions. It had also returned Nicholas to his good graces, at least to some extent.

He looked down at his concubine. She was radiant and he had to admit he wasn’t completely indifferent to her. Not to mention she was the mother of his heir. He didn’t intend to trade her away and if that half-breed bitch thought otherwise she was sadly mistaken. Soon, he would have everything he wanted. The masses would fall before him and the mere thought of that had him dragging Maria from her position on the floor and crushing her lips beneath his.

“Khivar.” Maria shuddered. Her body and mind betrayed her. There was a small sliver of her former self buried deep within her. It was slowly fading away. She sighed as Khivar reach into her dress and caressed her breast. “My Lord, Please…”

“Yes, my pretty one, let’s go to bed.” Khivar smiled as he led her away. She belonged to him and soon everything else would too.

Chapter 16

Sam sat outside Pete’s house. The fading sunlight had turned the sky a beautiful shade of reddish purple, it was amazing how similar it looked to when the sun had rose that morning.

She would know, after all she had been sitting in this exact same spot for almost fifteen hours. Now she was tired, cranky, had to pee and she still didn’t know why she was here or what to say.

Her head thudded against the steering wheel, after a moment’s hesitation she reached down to turn the ignition only to be halted by someone clearing there throat. She looked over and winced. Pete.

“So, I was tempted to haul you in for stalking, but we are adults and your security clearance would have you out in five seconds.” Pete’s voice was dry and a balm to her wounds. She’d missed him. “So how about you come in, we’ll have a nice stiff drink, you can tell me why the hell you’ve been sitting out here all day instead of being off world saving our asses.”

“A drink sounds great.” Sam pulled her keys out of the ignition, and followed Pete into his house.

Jack swore aloud when his work cell rang. They wouldn’t call unless it was an emergency, so much for going to look for Sam again.

“What?”

“Sir, SG-15 has returned. Fredrick’s, Judson are dead and Doctor Reynolds’s is in critical condition. Lt. Forest is severally injured but expected to make it.”

“Shit. I’m on my way in.” Jack jogged out to his car. This had been a long shitty week.

Teal’c grasped Bra’tac’s forearm and bowed is head. “Tak mal tiak, Master Bra’tac.”

“Tak mal tiak, Teal’c.” Bra’tac pulled him into to a hard hug. “It has been many months, my friend.”

“Indeed.” Teal’c stepped back and took his place at his mentor’s side. “Much has happened and I have need of your wisdom.”

“Would it have anything to do with a planet called Antar?” Bra’tac stopped abruptly, his expression dire.

“Antar?” Teal’c pondered the name for a moment. “I have only recently heard of this planet. Is this place the reason you were not here when I arrived?”

Brac’tac grasped his shoulder grimly. “Yes, yes it is and we do have much to discuss. But first what is it you needed to know?”

Jack looked at the grim faces of the men and women under his command. The SGC was like a family, with all the secrecy required whom else could you talk to but your co-workers? When someone was lost it was a blow to everyone. Walking though that gate was, in many ways, more dangerous then any other job in the military.

Fredricks and Judson were proof of that, not to mention Forest and Reynolds’s injuries. Jack paused in front of the infirmary, took a deep breath, and pasted his game face on.

“Brightman, what’s the verdict? Can I talk to either of them?” Jack saw the doctor frown and make a small notation on the chart he was holding.

“General, I honestly don’t think so.” Brightmen motioned for him to follow and lead him to one of the recovery rooms. Reynolds looked as though his skin had been peeled from his body and despite the fact he was unconscious he was whimpering. “I am quite positive that Doctor Reynolds will not survive till morning.” Brightmen looked up at him his eyes sad and haunted. The man had never been meant for this job. “There is really nothing else I can do for him.” He paused, and bravely added, “Perhaps if Miss Parker was here.”

“Right, Liz.” Jack grabbed the phone off the wall and made three quick calls in rapid succession before calling Daniel. “Daniel I don’t know why the hell your not answering you phone but I am going to be landing a ‘copter in the parking lot of your hotel in a few hours. You and Liz had better be ready to go. We have a situation here that requires her special touch.”

Jack turned clapped Brightman on the shoulder. “Keep them alive til we get back,” he turned and rushed out the door. “Some one tell Walter to find Carter and tell her to get her ass back here.” He shouted as the elevator closed on him.

Daniel tapped his finger against the steering wheel as he followed Liz back to the hotel. It was late, the sun was starting to set and he was starving. They had been in that chamber all day. All Day. The light on his right hand was fading, now the pattern was a delicate swirl of black. He looked his left hand and the points of light had disappeared, and there was nothing there to prove they had been there.

Except he knew they had been, and he could still feel everything. His mind was more alive then it had ever been, sharper, more agile and he couldn’t wait to delve into some of the more difficult languages to see if they were now easier to grasp. But it was more then that he could feel the hum in his mind, without even trying. If he tried, hard, and focused only on Liz he could feel the anger radiating through her like a song. He wasn ‘t a fan of Death Metal, in fact he was fairly sure he’d never heard a single song from that genre but that is what her feelings sounded like right now. Yeah, defiantly not a fan of Death Metal, he thought once more before he stopped trying to feel her.

Liz swerved off the road, and then back. Her mind not focused on driving at all. Max had asked for her forgiveness. His expression had been so completely broken, and his words had been perfect as he’d whispered them across her mind. She could still feel his touch, even though the remaining remnants of their connection had been swept as easily as if it had just been dust on a hard wood floor. Now a new one burned brightly and painfully in its place.

There was no more pain when she thought of Max, he’d made his amends, and she’d made hers. Their goodbye was complete and then being Max he’d gone one step further. He’d given her his blessing, told her how perfect Daniel was for her and how proud he was that she’d found a man like him to start over with. She wasn’t ready for that yet, or so she’d thought but now…and with this connection and him consenting to be her guardian. She should feel trapped, but instead she felt… free. For the first time since she’d left Roswell she felt free and the instant she realized that all the anger she had about having her and Daniel’s path chosen for them left.

She belonged to him, and he to her…but first she had to kill Khivar.
