Part 12

Eight months later

Max groaned at the insistent ringing as he was pulled out of a rather pleasant dream. It was the same dream he had had for months, ever since he opened one of his boxes to find an envelope containing an ultrasound. It was a day he would never forget, the shock turning into a burning happiness that wanted to burst forth and have him shout from as many rooftops as possible that he was the happiest man on the planet.

Since then, his dreams had consisted of him and Liz playing with two little toddlers. One with his dark locks and Liz’s passionate brown eyes, and the other, with a lighter shade, nearly light brown in contrast to her twin. Living life as a family, just the four of them.

Max pulled his pillow over his head as his phone rang again, his heart beating, he sat up jerkily, thinking something must have happened to Liz.

“Hello” Max asked gruffly.

“Max” was his sisters breathless reply.

“Izzy? What’s wrong, is everything Ok, is it Liz…the twins?” Max asked anxiously. Isabel had railed on him for months about his treatment of Liz, how she was only doing what was best for him. Finally, seeing Liz’s point of view, he had relented, taking a weekend trip back to Roswell he had spoken to her. He had gone back every weekend since, even his breaks were occupied by spending time with Liz, helping her shop for the babies, setting up the nursery.

The Parkers had knocked out and area of wall between Liz’s room and the twins new nursery, putting a set of French doors there instead. The connecting doors would make it easier on Liz once the babies were born.

It was nice having Isabel on the inside, someone they could both confide in when things got tough, which it had in the past month or so. Liz had been put to bed rest after she fainted in the restaurant.

Her parents had banned her from working, but she insisted on helping out, even if that was manning the cash register or filling drink orders. Max had pleaded with her to stop when he had been forced to rush to Roswell when he got the news that she was in the hospital after passing out in the middle of the afternoon.

Things had been good otherwise, Isabel helped him to see that just because he couldn’t publicly claim the twins like he so desperately wanted to, didn’t mean he couldn’t once he graduated and had a good job, once he was ready to settle down. It warmed his heart that Liz would sacrifice so much for him. If he thought about it though, there were sacrifices on both sides, heavy ones at that.

He knew Liz loved him, she had confessed it during one of the many heavy discussions during the past few months. It worked out well, he could get his studying done while keeping her company.

“Max!” his sisters’ voice brought him back to the present.

“How soon can you get to Roswell?” she asked anxiously.

“Why, what’s going on Iz, is it Liz?” He asked already pulling on a pair of jeans.

“Yeah, she went into labor about an hour ago, we’re at the hospital and she’s asking for you.” she sounded worried, and that made Max’s anxiety flair.

Max had bought an open ticket for just this event, along with memorizing the fight schedule he’d asked the air port to print out. It cost him a pretty penny to have a direct flight to Roswell’s small airport on an open ticket but it was worth it if it got him to Liz that much quicker.

“What’s going on Isabel?” he asked, there should be no reason she sounded this way.

Isabel groaned, “I didn’t want to tell you over the phone, but the doctors are saying Liz should have a C-section and she’s telling them she’s not making any decisions without talking to you, that’s putting Mr. and Mrs. Parker in a foul mood and they keep yelling at Liz about why it should matter, which is stressing her out. It doesn’t help that she’s in a lot of pain Max.”

Max was already in the car by the time Isabel told him this. “Is, the next flight is in half an hour. I’ll be there as soon as I’m able but I need you to pick me up at the airport. Can you do that?” When Isabel responded she could he sighed in relief.

“Ok, good. Now can you get in to see Liz, cause I want to talk to her.” The next thing he new Liz’s strained voice was heard over the line.

“Max!’ she asked breathlessly.

“Hi little bit, looks like those little ones are anxious to get here. Are you Ok, your only 36 weeks.” he asked gently. He didn’t like how tired and stressed out she sounded.

“Max, you have to get here. They want to do a C-section but once I’m in the operating room, you can’t join me when you get here! I need you here Max, please be here!” She said ending with a groan as another contraction hit.

He coached her through it as he pulled up to the air port. Pulling into the long term parking he raced for the entrance. He had ten minutes to spare.

“Liz listen to me. There must be a good reason they want to do a C-section, listen to the doctors Ok.” Liz gave a growl. “It’s because I’m so small, they don’t want to risk me hemorrhaging while I’m trying to deliver. That’s not going to happen Max!” She whined. “I’m strong and feisty, I can do this naturally!” she panted. “With a lot of help from drugs, cause these contractions are killing me!” She sobbed.

Max chucked. “Little bit listen to me Ok, I only have a few minuets before I have to get on the plane. I don’t want anything happening to you Ok. The doctors warned us this would happen with your uterus being so stretched. It’s thin enough as it is. I may not be there for the delivery if you have to go right in, but Isabel is right there sweetie. She’s not going to leave your side and she promised to video tape the whole thing.”

Liz groaned in response, he could tell she was in a lot of pain, and that worried him. Liz wasn’t big on showing pain and it was obvious to him she was hurting. “Liz, give the phone to Isabel.” Liz grunted in response.

“Max!” asked his sister. “Yeah I’m here.” he told her as his flight was called. “Look, I have to board now, but Iz, stay with her Ok. Don’t let her out of your sight.” Isabel told him Ok. “Hurry Max, she’s really pale and sweating a lot.”

“Alright, if she has to go into the operating room, I want you there in my place Ok, stay with her.” Isabel told him she would, along with sending Michael to the air port to pick him up. Handing his ticket to the attendant he hung up with his sister and boarded the plane.

Part 13

Max stared through the window of the nursery. There in front of him were two bassinets with the label’s ‘baby boy Parker’ 7 lbs 12 oz, 21 inches long, and ‘baby girl Parker’ 6 lbs even and 18 inches long. Swaddled in pink and blue blankets with matching caps, their slumbering faces flushed pink with contentment.

He felt his sister pause by his side. “Their beautiful Max.” She whispered as if they could hear her through the window. Max had to agree and his heart aced with the knowledge that although he wanted to shout from the roof tops that these beautiful children were his, he couldn’t do it. That he had to pretend only to love them simply because they were Liz’s flesh and blood, but not his own.

“It should say Evans on their Izzy.” he told her. “I know.” she replied sadly. Their conversation was cut short as Maria bounded up to them. “She’s awake Max, and she’s asking for you.”

Max nodded and with a lingering glance at his children, followed her to Liz’s suite. He had arrived about forty five minutes ago to a crowd of people in the waiting room. Not only were the Parkers there, but Isabel, Alex, Maria and Kyle, much to Max dismay.

He had to admit to himself though that Kyle had been there for Liz while he was at school. Michael had informed me on the ride from the hospital that Liz had been taken into surgery about a half hour after he had boarded his flight.

According to him, Maria had come from the room pale as a ghost informing them that Liz had started bleeding, she was rushed to the operating room, Isabel was being decked in scrubs, following soon after.

It scared him, but Michael had assured him that it was under control and that before he left Liz was resting comfortably in her suite and the babies were in the nursery.

Maria gave a small smile as she left him at Liz’s door, knocking gently, he entered to find her reclining on the hospital bed smiling a brilliant smile at him.

“Have you seen them?” she asked, when he nodded she frowned sadly. “It seems to me that everyone has seen them but me. I was kinda out of it during the C-section due to the drugs and I fell asleep as soon as Isabel told me they were fine.”

Max sat gingerly beside her. Leaning over he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. “Well, why don’t we get those babes in here. Then, these are a lot of people out there who can’t wait to see for themselves that your Ok.”

Liz nodded and summoned a nurse, asking that the twins be brought to her. They would be staying in the room with her for the duration of her stay. Soon two nurses came in the room pushing the two bassinets.

Liz gasped gently as each nurse placed a baby in Liz’s arms so that she was holding both. Glancing at Max she nudged a shoulder for him to take one so that she could explore the other more thoroughly. Max took the little girl in his arms, settling back in the rocking chair he had pulled up close to Liz’s bed.

He couldn’t decide who he wanted to watch more, Liz gushing over the baby boy or the little girl in his arms. Finally he contented himself with the peaceful glee of Liz’s face as the unwrapped the little boy who was now laying between her legs.

He watched as she grimed in pain and leaned forward, without crushing the bundle in his arms, and helped her with her pillows so that Liz could be in a more comfortable position, before leaning back once again. He slowly started a rocking motion as voices were heard outside her room.

Mr. and Mrs. Parker poked their head in being followed by the rest of the crew. “He guys!” Liz greeted them with a brilliant smile. “Come on in!”

Liz finished rewrapping the baby and picked him up and cradling him in the crook of her arm. Liz’s mother rushed to her side, leaning over she cooed and gushed over her new grandson.

A few minuets later Isabel placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Hey Liz, have you decided on names yet?” Liz glanced at Max before looking at the faces around her.

“Actually I have.” She paused as she motioned for Max to come sit beside her. “This little guy in my arms is Theodore Jeffries Parker, Teddy for short, and the little one in Max’s arms is Maxine Isabel Parker, Maxie for short.”

Everyone had tears in their eyes as they oohhed and ahhhed over the babies. Max couldn’t take his eyes off of Liz. She had named one of her children after him and Isabel. Glancing at his sister, he noticed with a small smile that she was trying to inconspicuously wipe the tears from her eyes without anyone noticing. Standing up he strolled over to her and gently handed Maxie to her.

Glancing back over to Liz, he noticed that little Teddy was in his grandmothers arms, his little arms flailing as he whimpered. “Hey Lizzie” Alex asked from his place by Isabel’s side, “Why did you chose those names?” he asked. Everyone became quiet as they waited for her answer.

“Well” she started clearing her throat. “Theodore, or Teddy means ‘gift’ which he is and I named Maxie after Max obviously because he helped me to see my dream.” Liz eyes held on Max’s as everyone glanced at her oddly, that is accept for Isabel, who just looked down at her name sake with a bit of sadness in her eyes.

Part 14

Six Years Later

Elizabeth Parker sighed as she placed her highlighter in the binding of the book she was presently studying before closing it. Her six and a half year old twins were bickering again, which seemed to be happening more often then usual lately.

Standing at the bottom of the stair of her midsize four bedroom house she yelled up to her kids. “Maxie, Teddy what is the problem this time!” Two dark heads popped up at the top of the stairs.

Maxie was smaller in frame, almost delicate with her ebony hair and amber eyes. She had her mothers nose and stature but everything else was her father. The same could be said for Teddy, the only thing he seemed to get from his mother was her chocolate eyes, rimmed with black, darkening when his temper flared to nearly black. He was taller then his sister, and although they were fraternal twins, you could defiantly see the family resemblance.

Her children gave her sheepish smiles and tiny waves. They would be finishing up the first grade in a few weeks and both were excited about summer. They knew their mother was studying and Uncle Alex and Auntie Izzy had explained that once mommy was finished with school then she could go to school with them on a regular basis instead of once in awhile.

Maxie was excited about the prospect of having her mother as her teacher, even if her brother thought it was going to be embarrassing.

Sighing Liz gave her children a small smile. “I’m gonna start on dinner so come on down. Maxie, I could use some help with the salad, Teddy, why don’t you set the table. Set two extra places Uncle Alex and Aunt Isabel are coming to dinner.” with a cheer from her kids, Liz headed for the kitchen.

Things hadn’t been easy the past few years, what had started out as bliss between Max and Liz had tapered off as Max’s school load became more demanding, stopping him from coming to visit Liz and the kids.

Then, three years ago Liz had gotten the shock of her life. They hadn’t really ended their relationship, at least not to her knowledge. But during Alex and Isabel’s wedding he had some news that had shattered Liz’s heart.

‘Liz smiled at Max as he took her hand and lead her out to the dance floor. He had seemed sad since he had returned to Roswell for his sisters wedding, and Liz couldn’t put her finger on what it was. He had shown her the same love that he always did, but something felt off.

“What’s the matter Max?” she asked, she felt Max tense under her where her arms were wrapped around his shoulders as they slow danced. He was near the end of his last semester and Liz was excited about the plans they had made for when he graduated.

Silently Max took her hand and lead her out the French doors leading out to the veranda off the large elegant room Isabel and Alex’s wedding reception was being held. Walking ahead of her he braced himself against the low stone wall in front of him, his shoulders sagging. With his head bowed, Liz heard him sigh.

“I didn’t want to do this here Liz.” she head him whisper and her heart rate accelerated at the utter bleakness of his tone. “Something happened at school, and…” he trailed off. A panicked look entered his eyes and Liz placed a hand on his cheek forcing him to look at her.

“Max” she whispered, she gave him a smile, “it can’t be that bad and whatever it is, we’ll deal with it together.” Tears gathered in Max’s eyes and Liz couldn’t understand why. “What happened?” she asked, she couldn’t conceal the panic she was now feeling.

Max couldn’t conceal his tears at the utter love that shone in Liz’s eyes. It wasn’t fair, this wasn’t supposed to happen to him. Everything was all planned, he was to graduate in two months, move back to Roswell, work for his father for a few years, marry Liz. Finally be the father he wanted to Teddy and Maxie. If only he hadn’t listened to his roommate that night.

There wasn’t anything he could do about it right now, accept the right thing, and it was breaking his heart all over again to do so.

Facing away from her so he couldn’t see how he was about to shatter her he told her in a firm voice. “I’m getting married at the end of the month, her name is Tessa Harding.” He paused before chocking out the rest. “We’re going to have a baby in about seven months.”

Utter silence was what he heard and he forced himself to turn around. He immediately regretted it when he saw the utter shock on the love of his life’s’ face. “wh…what?” she chocked.

Max reached for her, only to have her push him away. “What do you mean your getting married.” she whispered hoarsely, “let me explain Liz, please!” he begged.

Liz straightened her spine. She thought she was going to be sick, bile rose in her throat, burning her, allowing her to realize that this wasn’t a nightmare.

“A couple of months ago, I went out with my roommate to a frat party. He wanted to get in some good fun before we had to buckle down for finals and I didn’t want to go. You might remember, you called while I was there.” He paused as she heard her sharp intake of breath, so she remembered, and the fact broke his heart.

“I don’t know what happened Liz, I got a little drunk and the next thing I know I’m waking up next to Tess.” Max gulped, his breath coming fast and ragged as tears burned his eyes. “She came to me two weeks ago, telling me she was pregnant. I have to do right by her Liz.”

Liz didn’t listen to any more, slapping Max has hard as she could, she turn and fled. Collecting a confused Maxie and Teddy, she went back to her parents house, it wasn’t until she had tucked in her children that she allowed her tears to fall, her sobs echoing in the empty apartment, for all that she had lost.’

That had been the last she had seen of Max. Isabel had tried to postpone her honeymoon when she found out, that was when Alex had learned the truth. Isabel and Alex had been there for her as much as she allowed, but it was an unspoken agreement among the friends that Max was never to be discussed around Liz.

Liz didn’t go to Max’s wedding, she had never met the women who was now in Liz’s place by Max’s side. Liz knew they had a son together, in fact she’d seen pictures of the family at Isabel’s. The first time she had seen a picture of Tess, she had nearly been sick.

The blond haired, blue eyed petite women was everything Liz wasn’t. She was stunning with her curly blond hair and big breast. She made Liz feel like a dandelion amongst roses.

They part that hurt the most, was that they looked happy, Max looked happy in the pictures where he was holding his son, smiling gently. It was then, for the first time that Liz truly regretted how she went about everything, but most of all, she regretted that it wasn’t her children in those pictures.

Part 15

Supper was a joyful occasion, it always was when Alex and Isabel joined them. Maxie and Teddy immediately pulled Alex out to the back yard as soon as dinner was finished to play kick ball. Liz could see them out the kitchen window as she rinsed off the dishes.

It was a ritual of shorts that had been going on for awhile now. Twice a week Alex and Isabel would join Liz and the kids for dinner, and once or twice a week the twins would go over to their house, giving Liz the time she needed to study.

Tonight, Isabel seemed distracted, but when Liz hesitantly asked her what was wrong, Isabel gave her a smile, however false it was, and told her that it was nothing, everything was fine. If there was one thing Liz knew, it was that something wasn’t fine, and her heart rate accelerated with a million thoughts of what could be wrong.

When Liz had instructed her kids to go bath and get ready for bed, she placed three mugs of coffee of the table for her and her best friends. When all three where finally seated, she automatically began rubbing her neck, attempting to get out the knots caused by the stress she had been under for the last few weeks.

“I heard from Maria yesterday.” She told Alex, Alex lifted his head with a smile. “What did she have to say?” she asked. Maria and Michael had moved to California after college. Michael had opened his own gallery and was making a pretty penny selling his paintings.

“Well” Liz looked at him with a smile, “her and Michael have decided to move back to Roswell, they’ll be here by the end of the month. Maria is pregnant and wants to be closer to her mother.” She finished with a smile. Although they weren’t married, they had a close relationship.

Alex chuckled. “You know Amy is going to be all over Michael to finally make an honest women of Maria.” Isabel and Liz laughed knowingly. It was a private joke amongst their friends that both Michael and Maria loved living in sin to much to say vows. They had a belief that they didn’t need such a thing to know how they felt about one another.

It made Liz’s heart ace, thinking about how close her friends were. She didn’t date, couldn’t bring herself to put herself out there after what happened with Max. Isabel had set her up on a few blind dates, but she couldn’t bring herself to go out anymore then a few casual dates here and there, just to get out of the house.

It made her feel bad, like she was using the men that Isabel set her up with so she eventually stopped. Lately she had been sticking close to Kyle. He was safe, and knew that there wasn’t going to be any more then a close friendship between them.

Speaking of Kyle. “Hey, could you two take the twins tomorrow night. Kyle wanted to catch a late movie tomorrow, and since it’s Friday, I thought I could use a break.”

Isabel smiled at her, “you know we will Liz. Speaking of dates…” She laughed lightly when Liz blanched. “It’s nothing bad Liz, just this guy from my gym, he’d be perfect for you.”

Liz held up her hands before she even finished. Looking to Alex for help she turned back to Isabel. “I know your just trying to help Iz, but really…I’m fine, I don’t want to date anyone exclusively. So no more blind dates, please!”

Alex patted his wife on the hand. “Leave Liz alone Izzy, you know it’s a losing battle.” Isabel sighed sadly. “I don’t want you to be along forever Liz, I wish you would just get out there, the twins need a father…”

Liz stood from the table abruptly. “They don’t need a father Iz, I can be both just fine. We’re doing just fine.” Isabel looked pleadingly at Alex who just shook his head sadly.

Liz leaned against the counter, her hands braced behind her on the granite counter top. “I know you worry about me Isabel, but I’m fine. I’ll be done with school soon, I was thinking this summer I could take the kids away on a vacation. You know Disney World or something. I had perfect once and it didn’t crack up to all that it was supposed to be. I’m happy how my life is going and I wish that you could see that.”

Isabel turned slightly in the high back kitchen chair she was sitting in. “I just worry about you Liz. I know how hard it is raising two kids by yourself and I don’t want you to be lonely. I want you to know the happiness that Alex and I have, you deserve that Liz. Hiding out behind Kyle isn’t doing either of you any good.”

Alex laughed “I think it works good for both of them. She hides behind him and he uses her as an excuse once he get’s tired of what ever women is in his bed.”

Liz grimaced. “I know it’s not ideal, and when Alex puts it like that I can see how anyone would think that’s not healthy, but I had that happiness once. I’m not going to fool myself and allow myself to pretend that I have it again when I know I’m never going to feel that way about anyone else again. So what’s the point.”

Tears came to Isabel’s eyes but she knew better then to say anything. Mentioning Max was the surest way to get her best friend to close in on herself. She had even gone as far as putting away the pictures that included Tess and Zan in them. It tore her apart to see the heart break in her friends eyes every time she saw them.

If only Isabel could tell Liz that Max wasn’t happy. That Max missed her with his whole heart. She wanted to tell Liz what a complete harpy Tess was, how she had made Max’s life miserable for the past three years, always demanding more from him then he was able to give.

She knew when she was fighting a losing battle, however, she was determined to win the war even if she had to smack some sense into her best friend and brother. They belonged together, if only they could see what the rest of the world saw.

A half an hour later, after giving the twins a hug and kiss goodnight, Alex and Isabel departed with promises to the kids that they would see them tomorrow to go swimming in their pool.

As Liz got ready for bed that night, she sighed as she stepped out of the shower and mechanically began rubbing vanilla lotion on her body. Placing her long hair up with a clip, she settled back against her pillows to read a few more chapters for school. Her eyes never staying to the other side of the bed, where the covers were never disturbed.

This was her life, and although it wasn’t how she had always dreamed it would be. She was content.

~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~**
Max paced around the doctors office. His two year old son Zan, was asleep on the examining table/bed in the middle of the room. Pausing at the window, he ran his hands roughly down his face.
His wife Tess sat idly in a chair flipping through a Cosmo magazine, occasionally glancing at her watch and muttering under her breath.
Finally after the fifth time she turned to him. “If this takes much longer Max, I’m going to have to leave.” Max looked over his shoulder at her. “What is so important that our son’s health comes second?” he sneered at her. Pursing her lips at him she responded, “I have a hair appointment in forty five minuets that I can’t miss. It’s been booked for weeks and I don’t want to lose it.”
Max scoffed, “well go then, heaven forbid you lose it.” He told her sarcastically just as their was a gentle knock on the door. The doctor entered with a smile, ushering Max into a seat as he himself took a seat at the desk in the room. Pulling Zan’s medical records up on the computer, he capped his pen and turned toward them.
“Well, after further testing I’m afraid that I have some bad news for the two of you.” Max shifted Zan’s weight from where Max had picked him up, bracing himself against the edge of the table.
“Zan had what we like to call ‘Acute lymphoblastic leukemia’, also known as ALL. It’s the most common form of Leukemia in children, which is a good thing. There had been a lot of research in this area. Most cases that I have seen recover one hundred percent from this. However, the process of getting this little one healthy is long and painful, both emotionally and physically.” The doctor told them staring at Tess who had frozen in the middle of filing her nails.
Max’s breath hitched at the doctors news and Zan squirmed in Max’s arms where he had been unconsciously squeezing him to his chest. ‘How could this have happened?’ Max asked himself as his knees turned to jelly and he had to sit more heavily against the table.
Zan had always been a healthy child until recently when the new nanny had complained that Zan was tired and irritable all the time. Max had accused the old nanny of abusing him one day when he noticed all the bruising on his little body. Then he had fired her without another word, and with this new information, Max felt a pang of guilt.
Max wasn’t home as often as he wished. Not that he wanted to spend all that much time in Tess’s presence. The fact that Tess took a minimal interest in Zan caused Zan to spend most of his time with nannies, and when Zan wasn’t in their presence it was because Max was home.
Recently though, Max had taken the past week off to take care of Zan personally when a cold turned into a fever and his bruising had gotten worse. That morning when Max had woken up to Zan screaming in his room, he had entered to Zan covered in blood from a nose bleed. At that moment Max noticed how sick his son looked and rushed him to the hospital. Leaving a note for Tess on her pillow, due to the fact that she had been out the evening before.
It seemed to take forever for Zan to be seen, but when they finally saw the doctor they had immediately done extensive testing when they heard the complaints from the past week.
Tess had joined them two hours ago looking perfect as she always did next to Max’s wrinkled clothing and non shaven face. The fact irritated Max like everything about her did. Tuning back in to what the doctor was saying, he rubbed him hand up and down his sons back.
“With how advanced this illness is already in Zan and due to his age, I would recommend forgoing chemotherapy. Zan is as healthy as he is going to be at the moment and he’s young. How the illness works is the cancer starts in the inner part of the bone and quickly moves to the blood. In a healthy person the marrow of the bone helps the blood create white blood cells which fight infection. In Zan’s case, his body isn’t making the white blood cells he needs to fight when he gets sick. The decrease in red blood cells in causing the anemia and bruising. There isn’t much we can do to get his cells healthy again without a bone marrow transplant.”
Max closed his eyes in dismay, quickly swallowing his tears. “We’d like to admit him to the hospital right away to start him on medication that will help him start fighting this infection that seems to have him in it’s clutches. After that we’ll go about the process of putting him on the donor list.”
Tess had been still throughout the doctors explanation. Seemingly coming out of a dream she stared at the doctor. “Aren’t sibling the best possible match for this type of transplant.” she asked surprising Max. He shook his head sadly, his wife wasn’t stupid, she just acted like it all the time to fit her image. She had gone to Harvard after all.
The doctor nodded and Max’s heart rate picked up. “Yes, we do get the best results when a sibling matches. However, according to Zan’s file he’s an only child correct.”
It was at that moment that Max felt hope flare through his chest as he and his wife answered at the same time.
“Yes”
“No”
He met his wife’s stunned gaze, he had some explaining to do.
Part 16
Liz spun in circles, her son and daughter on either side of her doing the same thing. Laughing she allowed herself to fall to the ground, her long hair fanning on the ground. Teddy and Maxie childish laughter ringing in the night air.
Starring up at the sky she sighed, turning her head to look at her kids she said, “I’m exhausted, how about we call it a night. I have a big day tomorrow.”
Maxie smiled at her mom, “Can we walk with you when you get your diploma?”
Liz chuckled, ever since she had told her children what was going to happen and what it meant, they had wanted to partake in it. “Not this time kiddo, one day you’ll walk across that stage and I won’t be able to join you.”
Maxie pouted, “Your helping Aunt Izzy with the party Maxie” Teddy told his sister his little nose scrunched up in disgust, he considered planning a party a girly thing.
Maxie sighed, “I know, it’s going to be beautiful with balloons everywhere and streamers. Mom, I even helped Uncle Alex with the sign. You want to know what it says?” she asked her mom in excitement.
Liz grinned at her, “How about you surprise me munchkin.”
Standing up she headed her children into the house, helping them to prepare for bed. After reading them a story and tucking them into bed, she finally headed to her own room where she threw herself onto her bed with a groan of exhaustion. Glancing at the clock she saw that it was only nine.
On a usual night she would have a chapter to read for school or a paper to write. It seemed as if the past few years had been a constant battle between raising her kids, work and school. Now that school was finished and she was graduating, she was a little lost as to what to do with her time. It was to early to go to bed, and Alex and Isabel were over at Isabel’s parents house for dinner.
She found that odd, considering it was last minute, but Isabel had shrugged her shoulders and told her she would talk to Liz tomorrow. Sighing Liz pulled herself upright and went to her study where she logged onto the internet. It was the perfect time to plan that family vacation she had promised she would surprise the kids with.
________________________________________________________________________
Max stood looking at the pictures of Liz and the twins that graced Isabel’s living room wall. His heart aced at how happy the twins looked in the captured moments of their lives. He had arrived in Roswell earlier in the afternoon, and his mother had insisted on an family dinner. Isabel had been shocked when she had arrived to find him sitting in the living room nursing a beer with their father, or should he say shocked for all of two seconds before throwing herself into his arms, and then moving into lecture about calling more often.
He hadn’t been back to Roswell since Isabel’s wedding. He had tried talking to her before he left, but Liz would have nothing to do with him, letters were returned unopened and phone calls were ignored. So, against his better judgment he had left her alone. He couldn’t stomach being that close to Roswell and not being with her. Although his parents were disappointed in him for taking a position at one of the top law firms in Boston instead of returning home to take up a partnership with his father until he retired, they thought he wasn’t ready. It was yet another sore spot between him and his wife, if you could call Tess that. She had been furious when he had told her bluntly that he wasn’t going to take over his father firm. He had been surprised that she was willing to give up the fashionable Boston for Roswell, but she had smiled sweetly at him and said he should think about the social accomplishments that came with owning your own law firm, especially with his father’s law firm was so well known throughout the U.S.
He could never come up with the courage to tell his parents that he couldn’t face being here, in the same town with Her. It was just to difficult for him, now staring into the faces of his oldest children tears burned his eyes. God how he missed them. Although he was just Uncle Max, it had been more then what he had now, which was nothing.
Moving on to the next picture he smiled at the photo of Liz and Alex hugging each other. It looked to be last Christmas. Liz’s hair was a lot longer, nearly to her waist, layered and tapered around her angelic face. One thing that stung his heart the most was the sparkle that was missing in Liz’s eyes. Although she looked happy, her beautiful brown eyes were shadowed.
He had spoken to Isabel earlier about Liz, choking out the questions that he really truthfully knew he had no business asking, but he couldn’t have stopped himself even if he had wanted to.
Isabel had given him a sad smile before informing him rather bluntly that no, Liz wasn’t dating. He felt a swell of pride when she had informed him that Liz was graduating tomorrow. She had cautioned him on staying away, but his whole body yearned to share in her joy.
He didn’t want to ruin such a happy day for her, but time was of the essence if there was a chance to save Zan. He only hoped that Liz had it in her to help. He grimaced, of course she would help. It wasn’t in her to let a little boy suffer because his father was an asshole.
He felt Isabel’s presence behind him before he heard her speak. “The ceremony starts at ten tomorrow, and then there’s a party afterward at the Crashdown. I don’t want you ruining this for her Max, she’s worked really hard to get here.”
Max glanced away from the photo, looking at his sister over his shoulder. “I know this Iz, I’m not going to get in the way.”
Isabel walked up behind him. “You know she’ll help you Max.”
Max laughed humorously, “Yeah, cause I was such a prince to her Iz.”
Isabel stared sadly at the photo’s that adorned her wall. “Liz has been like a sister to me Max, but you’re my brother. What you did was screwed up and Liz hasn’t been the same since, if you hurt her again, it could break her, and I don’t want to see that happen, so I’m just warning you now, as much as I love you, your hurt her I hurt you. Kapish?”
Max gave Isabel a wide grin, “Kapish? I think you’ve been hanging out with Maria to much.”
Isabel laughed, “Well I talk to her on the phone when she calls to talk to Alex, but I don’t see her much. Her and Michael are flying in for Liz’s graduation. They’ll be here in the morning.”
Max nodded, “I wish I could be there Iz. I want to be there.”
Isabel gave Max a sad smile. “Liz wouldn’t be happy and you know it.”
Max nodded, a little distracted.
“So, how did Tess react. You did tell her about the twins didn’t you?”
Max grimaced. “Not one of my best moment Iz, of course I didn’t really work her into it, I just kinda blurted it out there.”
Isabel took his hand and led him to the cream colored couch in the living room. “What happened?”
Max sighed as he thought back to what had happened when he finally admitted to his wife that he was in love with another women, and that women was the mother of his oldest children.
TBC...Tess's first reaction....
Part 17
Earlier in the week
Tess was quiet, not saying a word since Max announcement in the examining room. She hadn’t even said anything about missing her hair appointment. As Max buckled Zan into his car seat, he looked over to see Tess slipping into her own car, her driver closing the door behind her.
When Max arrived home, he handed Zan off to his nanny to be put to bed. His light blond hair disappearing as she took him to his room, giving a sigh he walked up the stairs to his study, through the door that attached to his bedroom.
He wasn’t surprised when he walked back into his study to find Tess sitting on the couch, her perfect appearance shadowed. He wasn’t looking forward to this conversation.
Tess looked at him expectantly but he didn’t offer anything, finally she huffed “Don’t you think we should talk about this?”
Max looked at her, “What’s there to talk about Tess?”
“Maybe the fact that you never told me you had other children!” She shrieked as she stood and stormed to his desk.
Max stared at her, “I didn’t think you would care.” He finally told her.
“I wouldn’t care! If this get’s out the scandal alone…” She trailed off at the stormy expression on his face.
“I don’t care what your little socialite friends would think Tess. I gave up everything for you, I was happy Tess. I had plans until you knocked on my apartment door one day announcing you were pregnant. What do you want from me?” Max asked testily.
“I want to know what little bitch has always had your attention all these years!” She yelled pounding her fist against the wood.
“Never call her that again Tess!” Max yelled, “Liz is more then you will ever be!”
Tess paused, “You have got to be kidding me, Liz Parker, the one you told me was your best friend in high school! The Liz that you and Isabel are always talking about!”
Max glared at her, “Yes, that Liz, the same Liz that you’ve seen in the pictures with the twins, those twins happen to be my oldest children Teddy and Maxie, and not that it matters anymore, but how would you know what my sister and I talk about?”
Tess spun around and started pacing, “Oh come on Max, every time your parents come to visit they gush about Liz and how big her kids are getting. I’ve seen the secret looks you and your sister give each other every time the subject is brought up! I’ve heard the whispered words…”
Tess paused, “Your in love with her…” she trailed off. Her blue eyes turning cold.
Max sighed, “Yes I love her Tess, she’s the love of my life, but what she and I had will never be again. You made sure of that. Besides that’s the past, I married you didn’t I?” Max raised an eyebrow at her, willing her to challenge him.
Tess paled, “I don’t know what your talking about.” She turned away from him.
“None of this matters Tess, Yes I have kids outside this marriage, Yes I love them as much as I love Zan. Yes I love their mother. I don’t see how you could care. You don’t care about anything besides yourself, not Zan and most certainly not me or what goes on in my life.”
Max groaned to himself as Tess looked at him, fake tears shimmering in her icy blue eyes. He could almost believe she was sincere if he didn’t know what a manipulative, conspiring little witch she was. Doing whatever was necessary to get her way.
“How could you say that Max, I love you.” Max gave her a grim smile, “I don’t think you know what that word means Tess. If you loved me or Zan you wouldn’t cheat on me all the time, you’d act interested in what I want and need. You’d spend time with Zan once in awhile, read to him, play with him. Hell take an interest in him instead of depending on the nanny when I’m not here.”
Tess’s faced flushed with color before paling, “What are you talking about!”
Max chuckled “What, did you think I was stupid or something, why do you think I moved into my own bedroom. Hell if it weren’t for Zan, I’d get my own place, but that would confuse him more then he already is. I know about the men you bring home when I’m out of town. I know about the parties, I know it all Tess. The only reason I haven’t divorced you yet is because of Zan.”
“You bastard, if you would pay attention to me once in awhile I wouldn’t have to turn to someone else for my needs!” Tess screamed.
Max laughed, “That’s funny Tess, it’s a good think I had a DNA test done when Zan was born or I wouldn’t even know if he was mine! You couldn’t even get through the honey moon without cheating on me!”
Tess paled even more, a thin sheen of sweat shorn on her forehead, her nostrils quivered and her lips were pursed angrily. Turning her head to look out the window of his study, he sat back in his black leather desk chair and waited. Finally she spoke. “I didn’t mean for that to happen Max. I couldn’t understand why you seemed so sad, people were supposed to be happy when they got married and went on their honey moon. I was so happy, I loved you so much and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. I tried to make you happy, and whatever I did…you just seemed sadder. Then when Zan was born, you just shut yourself off to me. It was like you were here, but you weren’t. They only time you seemed to be happy was when you were with Zan and even then you were shrouded in sadness. I always wondered why, and now I know.”
Max sighed “No one knows that their mine Tess. That’s why I didn’t tell you, I have no legal claim to them. I’m just Uncle Max to them. I only hope she’ll help me when I go explain why I need the twins tested to see in one of them is a match.”
Tess stared at him wide eyed. “Why wouldn’t she help, if there’s a chance to get Zan better then we need to do something Max. If she doesn’t agree to help, we’ll take her to court, you’ll have to take claim to them. You can’t let Zan die Max!”
Max gave her a disgusted look. “I’m not going to have to force her Tess, no matter what I did to her in the past, she’s a good person and she won’t let a innocent little boy suffer when she has the power to change it. Now if you don’t mind, I have a trip to plan. If she agrees, she’ll have to come back to Boston with me. I’ll have the maids set up the guest house for her and the kids.”
Tess shook her head, “I don’t want them on this property Max, set them up in a suite at the hotel but I don’t want her or those kids near me or my son.”
Max sighed, “I won’t do that Tess. If you have a problem with them being here, you can go to a hotel. If one of them is a match, you heard the doctor, it’s going to be an emotionally trying few months. I want the kids to be comfortable and as relaxed as possible. I want them to feel at home and they can’t get that at a hotel.”
Tess jumped up, “You can’t do this Max, you can’t.” With that she stormed out of the room. Max heard her slam her bedroom door and grimaced, holding his breath. He cursed her insensitivity when he heard his son start crying, calling for him.
Max made his way to Zan’s room. There his son sat on the bed, his little angelic face flushed with fever. Scooping him up he carried him to the rocking chair by the window. Rocking his son, he wondered not for the first time in someone upstairs was punishing him for not being there for his other children. Tears clouded his eyes as fear, pain, confusion and guilt ripped through his heart.
After Max finished talking to Isabel, he went to the room he was staying in at her house, planning on calling to check in on Zan and take a nap.
When his housekeeper picked up the phone, he could hear arguing in the back ground. “What in heavens name is going on there?” he asked the elderly women who was in charge of overseeing the house.
She gave a disgusted sigh over the phone, “Mrs. Evans returned home this morning in a fit, she’s been raving at the maids all morning. I had Julie move little Zan to the guest house. She threw a fit when I asked her to keep it down, that the little tike was resting.”
Julie was Zan’s nanny, who was more mother then Tess could ever be. Max sighed, he knew that when Max went out of town on business Tess would often stay over at her one of her lovers homes. When things were still semi good between them, and Max was still willing to make an effort where his marriage was concerned, he had been hurt when he had gone home early to spend time with his family.
He was informed that Tess had not been home since he had left, leaving the care of their son to the maids. He hadn’t known what was going on, but after that trip Max had hired a nanny for when he wasn’t home, or at work.
He had confronted his maids about where she was, and it was then that the truth had come out, just how good of an actress his wife truly was. She tried to act like the caring, nurturing mother when Max was around, but then when he wasn’t, she ignored his existence.
He stopped trying at that point. Moving his things to the room branching off of his study that, until then had been used for storage.
His housekeepers voice brought him back. “She’s been trying to break into your study all day Mr. Evans. Even tried firing one of my girls when we wouldn’t give her the spare key.”
The news of his wife trying to pry into his personal space unnerved him. What could she possibly want that was in there. He didn’t know, a small smile formed on his face.
The only thing that she would find was the divorce papers he had drawn up at work, he just needed to sign them and file them with the courts. That was if she could get into his safe. He wasn’t a mean person at heart, however when the news of Zan’s illness came out, he had begun to think of how short life was, and he was tired of being miserable with a women who had ice in her veins instead of blood.
He had tried to make it work, but he knew there was nothing left to save. He was going to focus on getting his son better, and when he was, he was going after his hearts desire, and he would continue going after it if he had to spend the rest of his life doing it, he would win though. His heart told him, he would win.
Telling his housekeeper he would see her in a couple days, he hung up the phone. He had wanted to talk to Zan, but didn’t want him woken up from his nap.
Laying on the unfamiliar bed, Max fell into the only peace he had for himself, dreams of Liz and his three children.
Part 18
Tess was in a foul mood. She had woken up that morning with a raging hangover, in an unfamiliar bed with a man she didn‘t know. Ever since Max had told her about his little family she couldn’t seem to cope. She felt betrayed.
Tess had fallen in love with Max the first time she had laid eyes of him, he had come out of one his lectures on campus, and knew she had to have him. In her bed, in her life, as her husband.
She had heard his name around campus, how he was the top of his class, the body of a god, and was going to be quick to rise to the top.
He was everything she wanted and needed. The only problem was, according to her sources, he was completely uninterested, concentrating fully on his study’s.
That hadn’t stopped her though. She had weaseled as much information as she could out of his roommate by sleeping with him, and she had convinced him to bring Max to a frat party thrown by her house.
It had seemed to be a good plan at the time, he had been a hit with the girls, however, he declined ever offer to dance with one single girl there. He seemed happy to dance in a group or stand on the sidelines, observing.
She had sent drink after drink over to him, after slipping a little extra into them, before approaching him herself when he seemed more relaxed. They had had a great time, and by the end of the night she was able to coach Max to her bed. He was everything she had imagined. She hadn’t even thought about it when he had called out someone else’s name when he had cum.
Then only part of her plan that she hadn’t counted on was when he had woken up the next morning, panicked and mumbling to himself. He had seemed distraught at waking up next to her. It had been a blow to her pride, but she had brushed it aside, it wasn’t going to deter her from her plan. She had set her sights on him and she wasn’t letting her go.
He had avoided her for weeks, not answering her phone calls and acting like he didn’t know her when she followed him around campus. He became her very own obsession.
Tess wasn’t used to not getting her way, so when she found out she was pregnant, her first thought was that she had him now. If she knew anything about Max, it was that he was loyal and very responsible.
She hadn’t expected the reaction she got from him though. He had been shocked, and then tears had come to his eyes, bowing his head, she heard him whisper, asking himself what he had done.
He seemed to accept her more after that. However, he was reserved. He went to the doctor with her to get her pregnancy verified, she spent more time at his apartment, when he finally got around to proposing to her she had been ecstatic. She had told him that she wanted to get married as soon as possible, and he had sadly agreed.
When he disappeared for four days, and his roommate had told her he had gone back to Roswell for his sisters wedding, she had been hurt. Why had he not invited her, did his family not know about her? The thought made her angry. She had thought about hopping on a plane and going there herself, but she decided against it.
When he had returned, she had confronted him about it. He told her that he had some things he had to take care of, and when she had asked him what was so important that he hadn’t invited her to his sisters wedding, to introduce him to his family. He had simply told her that his family would meet her at the wedding. She had been hurt. She knew he didn’t love her, but she felt confident that with time he would realize that they belonged together.
After that day, he seemed detached, as if he was going through the motions. She did indeed meet his family at the wedding, and she got along with everyone, accept his sister. Isabel was a beauty. Tess wasn’t jealous of much, but Isabel’s beauty, it made her seem pale in comparison. It was obvious that the siblings were close, however even Tess could feel the tension between them. Isabel was cool for appearances sake, but that was all Tess got from her, stiff and formal. Tess thought it was odd that Isabel’s husband wasn’t by her side for the wedding, but she brushed it off.
When Tess was walking down the ail she couldn’t remember being happier then at that moment in life. However, Max looked like he was at the gates to hell. He had gone through the ceremony mechanically, his voice void of emotion.
Max had insisted that they not sleep together until the honey moon, and yet when they got to their destination, he couldn’t seem to bring himself to do it. When she had faltered in a moment of insecurity and asked him if it was her he had given her a lopsided smile and told her no, he just found it hard when she was pregnant, like he was going to hurt the baby. They had spent most of their honey moon getting to know each other better, since in truth they had only known each other for a few months.
However, in a moment of weakness, she had made out with a man she had met while she was laying beside the pool. She didn’t think that Max had known and it made her blood boil to know he did. She had felt beautiful and sexy. Wasn’t that how you were supposed to feel on your honeymoon instead of feeling like you were vacationing with your family.
When they arrived home, they had moved into a nice two bedroom apartment, and when Max graduated he accepted a job at one of the most prestigious law firms in Boston. He was often at the office, working late hours and quickly made his way up the ladder.
Tess, in those hours alone found herself feeling neglected and lonely, and she started resenting Max in the way he seemed indifferent to her presence. He was always there for her needs during her pregnancy, but she still felt like something was missing.
When Zan was born, things started to look up. It was like Max came alive, although still sad. His hours at the office shortened and they spent more time as a family. Max started to come to her at night, and she finally began to feel like things were looking up. By the time Zan was three months old Max felt it was time to buy a house. She felt like they were a family, Max smiled more often and he was more relaxed. Looking for a house was fun for Tess, Max let her chose what ever one she wanted.
She chose a six bedroom, four bath colonial gated property, with beautiful landscaping and an in ground pool. It had a four bedroom guest house on the property, on the other side of the pool yard, down a small hill. Their home just happened to sit on the outskirts of Boston, giving them a nice chunk of land, but close enough to the big city that she could keep up with her socialite image.
Tess insisted that they hire a housekeeper and three maids to do the housework, she wasn’t raised to be the type of wife to slave away over a hot stove and spend her days cleaning house.
Tess learned however that she wasn’t cut out to be a mother. She refused to change Zan’s diapers and after the first bath, when she found her $150 silk shirt ruined with water stains she demanded one of the maids do it.
She just didn’t have the instinct that was needed to bond with Zan. To her he was just baggage, he was often in the way, he smelled and he cried to much. She found herself resenting the fact that he demanded more then she had to give.
Things were going fine for them, until their house warming party. Tess had spent over a months with a decorator, planning colors and schemes for each room in the house, except Max’s study. Max’s parents came out for it and while standing next to her husband while talking to his parents, his father said something that confused Tess.
He mentioned that he was saddened that Max wasn’t returning to Roswell to take over the family firm, however he was proud that he was doing so well for himself. Later that night when all their guests had left and Max’s parent’s were set up in one of the guest rooms, Tess had confronted him about it.
His response infuriated her, he simply shrugged his shoulders and stated that he had made a decision to accept the position here in Boston instead of Roswell. He hadn’t even spoken to her about it.
Things only got worse when she had met Thomas at a business dinner thrown by one of Max’s associates. He was handsome and successful, with blue eyes that smiled at her. He flattered her, made her feel beautiful and sexy. He made her feel like she was worth something. He was her first lover, he lasted for six months.
The guilt became easier once Max moved out of the bedroom, at first she felt like she was the one betrayed, yet she knew he had always been faithful. Now that she knew about this Liz Parker, it wasn’t Tess he was being faithful to.
The thought of another women holding her husbands heart made her blood boil. She couldn’t get it out of her head, for days she sat on the knowledge, and when Max informed her that he was heading to Roswell to talk to Liz about getting the twins tested, she had headed for the first bar she could.
She remembered bits and pieces of the night before. It had been primal, the stranger holding her hands above her head as she was pinned up against a wall. His hips thrusting into her until she felt bruised. She still tingled will the after affects of the multiple orgasms she had had the night before.
It seemed the more she cheated on Max, the more she craved it. She craved the power, the unattached emotions. They couldn’t hurt her, only make her feel good. She loved to feel a fit man thrust their cock inside of her, spilling their seed and warming her with it.
Now as she stood with her hands on her hips, she wanted nothing better then to rake her nails across the stupid maids face for not giving her the key to Max’s study. Their had to be something in there on Liz Parker. Something she could use to make sure the bitch was out of her life, as for those brats…they could live with Max. She didn’t care, she’d have Max send them to boarding school it’s what she planned for Zan when he was old enough.
Giving one last glare at the women, she yelled “your fired get your whoreing ass out of my house!!!” before she headed to the garage. Grabbing the axe Max used to cut down their Christmas three every year she headed back inside.
It took her awhile to wield the heavy tool, however she finally had a big enough hole to fit her hand though to unlock the door. She didn’t care anymore if Max knew she was busting into his office. His ‘loyal’ servants had most likely already called him to inform him. She knew that’s how he had found out about her lovers.
She had gone through a faze where the thought of fucking one of her lovers in the same bed she slept with her husband had turned her on to the point of popping. One of the maids had walked in on her riding her lover when Max was out of town on business. As soon as he returned he had moved out of their shared bedroom. She had thrown a fit, but he had ignored her with his quiet detachment that could piss her off to any degree. She thought he did it on purpose, now she wasn’t so sure.
Throwing the axe to the side, she looked around. Everything was so neat it made her sick. She knew that the only thing the maids did in here was vacuumed and dust, everything else had it’s own place and Max liked to keep it that way.
Sitting in the leather chair behind his desk she thought about where to start. Opening the drawer directly in front of her, she saw pencils and paper, flipping though those quickly she saw that they was nothing important so she shoved them back in the drawer. When she found nothing important their, she moved to the computer. Thinking of a password was harder then she thought, however, she felt rage as she tried one more time. Typing in
‘Liz Parker’ she felt heat creep over her body when it admitted her.
She searched her files quickly, seeing most of it was work. Clicking on his email, she read a few, until she came to one from his sister with an attachment. Clicking on it she wanted to scream when she saw the message.
Hey little brother,
How are you doing. I hope all is ok, Alex is out of town on business and I took the twins for the night so I wouldn’t feel so lonely. LOL.
I know you wanted updated pictures of the kids, so I’m attaching some. However, I will let you know that scanning them in without Alex finding out wasn’t an easy feat. I need to by a digital so all I have to do is hook it up.
Liz is fine, I know you were worried, that you always worry about her. However, not to sound like a bitch, I’ve told you that it’s not your responsibility anymore. You burned that bridge Max, and as much as I love you and you are my brother, Liz is my friend and I don’t want her hurt anymore then she already has been.
I don’t know what happened between you and that harpy. (does it make me a bitch for calling your wife that?) but you’ve brought it all on yourself.
Anyway, onto more cheerful news. Maxie leaned how to climb a tree properly today. Teddy has been teasing her that she does it like a girl, so she jumped in head first. However, Liz’s wasn’t impressed when Alex took her home with all the cuts and bruises. She muttered something like, ’that’s what I get for letting her hang with the boys.’ I thought it was cute, but you know Liz.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the photo’s.
Love Isabel.
Tess clicked on the attachment only to see that it had been saved in a file. Quickly she went to his photo file, and clicked on the one labeled ‘Liz and kids’. Opening it she wanted to scream.
It was filled with hundreds of photo’s of a small brunette and two children thought stages of the children’s life. Tess wanted to spit when she saw how much the little boy looked like her husband. Right down to the ears.
Leaving the desk she entered his bedroom, opening drawers, tearing though the boxes on his closet shelf. In one box she found a smaller treasure chest with a lock. Taking a hair pin from her hair she picked it before throwing it open. It was a box she had seen a hundred times before, she had never given it a second thought. Now though, things were different.
Inside she saw memento’s that she knew meant something for Max that had to do with Liz. Their was a ultrasound of what she figured was the kids, a packet of letters wrapped in a rubber band, some ticket stubs, hospital bracelets from when the twins were born and more odds and ends.
At the very bottom, was a small, velvet box. Picking it up she opened it with a creak. She felt her throat close when she spied the gorgeous princess cut diamond ring that was at least two carets, nestled in it’s soft cloth bed.
Picking it up, she noticed that it was obviously one of a kind, designed for one person. Inside she saw an inscription that read,
Max and Liz, I love you Little Bit.
Tess slowly placed the ring back in it’s bed and closed the box. She had always known that she didn’t have all of Max. But to see with physical evidence that she was second best cause red hot fury to flow though her veins.
She slowly put everything back, and slowly sat down on her husbands bed only to notice a double frame sitting on his night stand. On one side was a photo of Zan when he was learning to walk and the other was of a women, obviously Liz, with a little girl on her lap, sitting next to her was her husband, sitting on his lap was a miniature of him. All had big grins on their faces. The kids looked to be about one or two.
No where in the room was there evidence that Max was married. Not one picture of her adorned any of the walls or furniture. The thought made her grumpy. She’d have to have a talk with Max when he got home, whore or no whore with her bastard children in tow. She’d show this Liz, this mousy plane Jane bitch that she couldn’t have her husband. She wasn’t giving him up that easy.
Picking up the frame she threw it at the wall before storming out of her husbands rooms. She spied Julie holding Zan close to her as she passed and turned her nose with disgust as the little boy held his arms out to her calling, “Mama, Mama.”
Tess marched out of the house, ignoring her sons cries behind her.
I know I usually thank everyone specifically for leaving feedback, however, my computer isn't letting me do that right now. However, I do want to thank everyone who left feedback and although I'm still on pain meds, and a little woozy in the head I am doing alot better, so thanks...
anyway, enough chatter... onto the next part and I hope you all like it!!
Chapter 19
It felt like a hot lamp was attached to her neck as Liz walked across the stage to receive her diploma. Giving a happy smile she turned to where her family and friends were sitting, giving a delighted laugh as her children held up signs congratulating her.
She nearly tripped when she spied him standing in the back, leaning up against a tree, just staring at her. What the hell was Max doing here? She thought to herself. When her eyes met his he gave her one of his gentle smiles she turned away, ignoring him.
She could feel anger beginning to coil in the pit of her stomach. What gave him the right to be here, he wasn’t invited. She didn’t want him here, however, she was despaired when her heart gave a small flip at the sight of him.
Returning to her seat, she forced herself to face forward attempting to pay attention to the rest of the ceremony, trying fruitlessly to ignore the pair of eyes burning a hole in the back of her head.
***~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~****~~~~~~~~~~~~****~~~~~~
The only thought running though Max’s head as Liz walked across that stage was the fact that he couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. Her face was glowing with happiness as she turned and waved to the group in the crowd clapping and cheering for her.
He spied Maxie and Teddy yelling, waving signs trying to get their mothers attention and his heart swelled when she laughed. He could hear the tinkling sound all the way in the back, over the crowd.
However, all the good feelings ended when he noticed that Liz had spotted him. She didn’t look happy, in fact, when she nearly tripped he knew that she was furious.
Isabel had warned him about staying away, that he wouldn’t be welcome. But he didn’t want to just show up on her doorstep, he wanted her to have warning, for her to know that he was here in town before he approached her and he didn’t want it to be at the party afterwards.
Maybe he should have had taken Isabel’s advice and had her warn Liz that he was in town. He had told her not to mention anything though, not wanting Liz to have the chance to shut him out before he even got to the greeting.
He watched as she lifted her chin and attempted to ignore him as she once again took her seat, making him wonder how the hell he was going to breech the gap between them long enough to beg not only for her forgiveness but for her help.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liz was distracted during the party after the ceremony. So many people were there, both those she knew and those she didn’t. However, Liz kept her eyes open for the one person she so did not want to run into.
She danced with Maxie and Teddy and giggled with Maxie when she saw the sign that she had worked so meticulously with her Uncle Alex. All in all it was a fun time, but in the back of her mind she knew that the fun she was having was dampened by the fact that Max was in town, causing a million and one thoughts to race around her head.
She was slightly disgusted with herself when those thoughts turned selfish. Did he bring his wife and son, did he come to see her, would he come and see her, would she let him see her.
She hated how her body burned with emotions all suppressed. She had come to accept the numb existence she had been living since the night of Isabel’s reception. She never again wanted to feel as if she were drowning, or feel the walls close in on her. She never again wanted to shed tears over a broken heart, and she vowed to herself that she never would.
Twirling as she danced with Teddy on the dance floor that had been cleared for this specific reason she saw Isabel enter the Crashdown, Alex right behind her. Stopping she bent to Teddy’s level she sent him over to his grandparents before she straightened up and marched up to one of her best friend.
Isabel saw her as Liz headed in her direction and couldn’t help but cringe at the hard look on her friends face.
She wasn’t surprised when Liz gave Alex a bright smile and thanked him before turning to her and dragging her away.
“Where is he Isabel?” Liz asked Isabel in a harsh whisper, all the while keeping a cheerful smile on her face.
Isabel looked everywhere but her best friend. “I don’t know Liz, but please, he’s here for a good reason, just hear him out.”
“I don’t want anything to do with him Iz, and you know this. What are you trying to do!?” Liz’s voice rose and octave and Isabel glanced around before grabbing her arm and dragging her to the back room of the restaurant.
“Please Liz, I warned him not to invade on your day, but you know how my brother is. I don’t know the specific reason he’s here but it has to be important. All he told me was that it was very important that he talk to you and it couldn’t wait. Liz he was near tears last night while we talked. Please for my sake Liz just hear him out.” Isabel pleaded.
Liz sighed. Isabel knew that she would do anything for her friends and it was obvious that what ever was going on was upsetting her friend. Liz stared at her friend for a long moment before nodding her head. “Fine, I’ll talk to him but then I want him out of my life Iz. I don’t want him near the twins so I’ll leave them with my parents. Have him come over tonight…” With a weary sigh she dropped her head.
Isabel stared at Liz aghast. “You can’t do that Liz, he wants to see the twins as much as he wants to see you, every time we talk he asks how the twins are. God, it’s not fair to him that he has to keep suffering for a mistake that he made years ago!”
Liz gave her friend a sad look and sighed. “Maxie and Teddy are getting to that age where one of them would notice Iz, I don’t want them hurt anymore then they have to. Look, I won’t promise anything here but I’ll see what he wants and if, and only if I can assure that he won’t hurt my children, I’ll see about letting him see them, but until them, my children are to stay as far away from him as possible, is that understood or I won’t speak to him.”
It made Isabel sad that he friend had been reduced to this pain, but she understood. Nodding her agreement she sighed. “I’ll let him know to contact you this evening after the party, how’s that. But promise me that you will think about letting him see them, I mean really think about it Liz. He misses them so much and I know that what ever has been bothering him since he showed back up in town, seeing them will make it a little better.”
Liz nodded, “he can do what he wants to hurt me Isabel, but my children will never know the pain of having him in their life and then ripped out again.”
Isabel nodded sadly. She had never understood how her brother could have handled this situation any worse then he did. Trading a life of happiness for a life of misery all for honor. But who’s? Not his, he was miserable with most aspects of him life. Not Liz’s, she was just sad all the time. She didn’t think she would ever understand why her brother had traded his dream life for the life he now lived.
“I’ll pass on the message on to him that your willing to hear him out, should I have him call you or just come over?” Isabel asked hesitantly.
Liz thought about it for a moment. “Just have him come over around six. I would rather not have to deal with him more then once or longer then necessary.”
Isabel nodded, “Yeah, Ok I’ll let him know when get home.”
Liz nodded once before turning on her heal, immediately a smile lit her face as if her whole world had not just turned up side down once more.
Max ran his fingers though his hair. His heart aced with the knowledge that once again he was going to hurt the one person in the world he didn't want to hurt.
Max had been standing on her front porch for five minutes, his heart racing with the fact that behind the door in front of him was Liz. He knew that she was aware that he was here, when he had pulled up outside her house he had caught her standing at one of the windows on the second story of the house that Isabel had directed him too.
It wasn't to large or to small and it screamed of Liz's personality and he hadn't even seen the inside of it yet.
He lifted his hand to knock just as the door in front of his swung open and there she was, not two feet in front of her. She stared at him for a second and then turned to walk away calling over her shoulder, "don't just stand there Max, come on in."
Max followed her in, closing the door softly behind him, taking in his surroundings. He was standing in a tiled foyer, a small table sat against one wall, Liz purse adorned it along with a bowl holding her keys.
Next to it was a shoe rack holding kids tennis shoes. A horizontal coat rack with intricately burned art work was bolted to the wall above it.
On the opposite wall was a large mirror that reflected the artwork that hung above the table.
Max slowly headed in the direction he had seen Liz go and found her in the kitchen. Max leaned against the doorway just soaking her in. The light summer dress that she wore clung to her curves, empizising her petite waist and womanly curves.
His whole body sighed, as if it had been holding it breath since the day she walked away from him.
She was busy pulling something out of the oven and turned to look at him over her shoulder.
"Would you like anything Max?" She asked in a tight voice. He shook his head at her.
With a sigh she straighten up and turned to him, crossing her arms in front of her.
"Look Max, I agreed to speak with you because Isabel begged me to, she said something about you needing my help and although I don't know how I can possibly help you I'm willing to listen and hear you out."
Max breath left him in a whoosh as the events of why he was here came back in a rush. Nodding his head he cocked it toward the kitchen table.
As he took a seat across from her and took a deep breath, he slid the folder of information he had gathered about Zan's illness and pictures of him across the table to her.
Taking a deep breath he began with a simple, "I'm in desperate need of your help."
Hope you enjoy!!!
Part 20
Liz flipped through the folder in horror as she listened to Max beg for his sons life. She had done a research project for school on the disease commonly referred to as ALL and as she stared at the picture in her hand of the little boy who was all Max accept for the mop of blond hair on his head, she shuddered at what the little boy must be going through.
She glanced up as Max paused in his passionate speech. She felt guilty as she realized that between her bodies traitorous response to his nearness and the horror of what she was realizing she hadn't been paying him any attention.
She froze when she looked up and saw the sheen of tears in his eyes. "God Max!" she crocked out.
Max hung his head trying to get his emotions under control. He felt clastaphobic and his breathing was becoming harsher.
Liz jumped up when she realized that Max was on the verge of hyperventilating. Grabbing a brown lunch bag she hurried to his side, shoving the bag over his mouth and nose and pushing his head between his knees, commanding him to breath deep.
Max slowly got himself under control and realized Liz was slowly rubbing his back, mumbling to him to calm down and relax. The feel of her small hand rubbing slow circles on his body almost caused him to hyperventilate all over again.
Slowly he sat back up, his face flaming at his break down. Liz backed away from him and took her seat once again.
"Who knows about this Max?" She asked softly. Max shrugged his shoulders.
"My parents and Isabel know he's sick, but I didn't explain everything to them. I wanted to talk to you first." Liz nodded not really understanding his logic.
"I'm sorry for breaking down like that, I think reality finally caught up with me." Max apologized, giving a sheepish grin.
Liz stared at him, "Well it's obvious that your haven't been dealing with this Max, but I don't understand why you need my help."
Max rubbed his hands over his face. "This illness has attacked Zan in a very aggressive way. One week I think he has the flu the next I'm rushing him to the hospital because he's soaked in his own blood from nose bleeds. It's already to advanced for chemotherapy or radiation in hopes of remission. They told me that his only hope of survival is a bone marrow transplant."
Liz eyes widened once again in horror. "But he's only two!" she burst out. She stared down at the photo in front of her. She had seen glimpse of photos, but had never studied one up close. He was a beautiful little boy.
Realization dawned on her, "siblings" she whispered. Remembering from her paper that the best results of a marrow transplant in children was siblings. "You want me to test Maxie and Teddy!" she shrieked, jumping up from the table.
Max slumped in his chair as Liz began pacing around her kitchen muttering.
Liz's thought raced as she whipped out cleaning supply’s from under the kitchen sink and begin scrubbing her already immaculate kitchen. She couldn't believe the nerve of him, waltzing back into her life. Disrupting her peace to ask something like this, the nerve! She continued muttering.
Max finally stood and approached her, placing a tentative hand on her shoulder. She immediately stopped scrubbing.
Just as Max placed his hand on her shoulder, Liz realized that Max was doing what was necessary to save his child. Her body shuddered at his nearness.
Thoughts began to whip around her mind at the speed of light. "Everyone's going to know now. They are going to be furious that I've lied all this time. Your parents! God Max. They are going to hate me. And my parents, God..." she shuddered again in horror. "They are going to be so disappointed in me." she whispered.
Max wrinkled his face in confusion before he thought about her words. When they registered his legs nearly gave out from under him. Turning her around to face him he studied her face.
"Does this mean your going to help me, help Zan?" he asked.
The hope shining in his eyes brought tears to Liz's own. "Of course Max. How could I turn my back on a baby when it's within my power to help?"
At her words Max's legs did give out and he slid to the kitchen floor, leaning against the cabinet doors. Liz kneeled beside him, her hand on his shoulder.
"I was so afraid, so afraid that you would turn me away after what I did to you. Why are you helping me?" he asked, sorrow in his voice.
Liz stared at him, her heart in her eyes and Max's breath hitched with the love he saw there, was it possible she still loved him? he thought.
"I'm helping you because despite the hurt you've caused me, I know if one of my children needed help, I would want you to help me save them if it was within your power." Liz stood suddenly, "besides, I can't stand the thought of any child suffering the way he must be suffering right now."
Max was awed at her words, and wanted desperately to hold her in his arms and kiss her senseless, he knew though that now was not the time.
Liz took a seat next to him on the floor with a sigh. "How are we going to deal with this Max?" She asked him.
Max gave a sigh as he thought. "I don't want to move Zan, although there is a great facility here in Roswell. Zan's having a hard enough time as it is."
Liz nodded in understanding. "Summer vacation just started for the kids, I was planning on taking them to Disney land. Guess I'll have to post pone that trip." she muttered.
"I have a guest house on my property Liz. You and the kids are welcome to stay there for as long as this takes. It's pretty secluded so you'll have privacy, and it's close to the hospital." Max told her.
Liz eyes widened in horror. She jumped up and glared at him. "I will not, and I mean I will not stay at the same house as you and your wife Max, God how could you even ask that of me!!!" she ended shrieking.
Max jumped up, "The guest house isn't near the main house Liz. I want to know Maxie and Teddy as their father, not as an uncle any more. I want the world to know that those two beautiful children that we had together are mine! It's all going to come out anyway once we tell people and this will allow me to be there for them physically and emotionally. I want them to know that I love them, I want to spend time with them!"
Liz stared at him in horror at the truth of his words. Maxie and Teddy were going to find out that the man they had always known as 'Uncle' Max was really their father.
"This is to much to fast Max. I don't know if I can deal with all this at once..." Liz told him, anguish flashing in her eyes.
"Please Liz. I don't know any other way to do this. Zan needs this immediately, his time is running short. We'll find a way to deal with this one day at a time but please, let me do this with you. I want Maxie and Teddy to know how much I love them. How much I need them in my life, that I would never let them go." Max pleaded.
Liz picked up the neared object to her, which happened to be a vase of wild roses she had been planning on placing on the table in the foyer.
Throwing it at him as hard as she could she started screaming at him as he ducked just in time for the vase to fly over his head and shatter against the cabinets behind him.
"You already let them go you selfish bastard, you abandoned us when you got another women pregnant and married her!" Liz screamed. "I will not let you walk back into their lives and hurt them!"
Max grimaced at the truth in her words, but admired how she was like a mama bear protecting her cubs.
"I waited for you, you ass hole, I waited and held my babies while they cried because all of a sudden 'Uncle' Max wasn't there anymore! I waited for you to come to me to explain how you could have ripped our world apart! I thought we were forever Max! My children wanted forever with you and you ruined it! You ruined everything!" Liz continued to scream at him.
Finally Max couldn't take it anymore and crossed the room to where Liz was flushed with anger and chest heaving. He wrapped his arms around her, pinning her flailing arms to her side.
"I'm so sorry Liz, you can not even understand how many times I have wished I had done things differently, but I can't regret it." Max whispered as he inhaled her soft vanilla sent of her hair. How he had missed her scent.
His words caused Liz to throw herself in a blind fury. She attempted to stomp on his feet, kick his shins, biting his shoulder, anything to get him to let her go, all the while screaming at him to release her.
Finally she fell limp in Max arms, sobs shaking her small frame. Tears came to Max's eyes at the agony he knew he had put her through. Sliding down to the floor he held her.
Finally Liz calmed herself until all that was left were small sniffles and hiccups. She didn't try to move, for the first time in ages she felt as if she were home. She scoffed inside her head. Yeah, at home in the arms of the man she loved, a man who was married.
"I didn't mean it that way, I just don't regret it because of Zan. You'll understand once you meet him Liz. I don't think I could ever regret having Zan in my life."
Liz nodded in understanding, she could never regret having Maxie and Teddy, not how they had come about.
"I'm sorry Max, my little fit was uncalled for." Liz's body tingled as Max chuckled, sending shivers through her body as she felt them.
“I don't think it was uncalled for at all little bit. I'm surprised you didn't start when I walked through your door." Max sighed, "We need to discuss what to do from here." Liz nodded her head my made no attempt to move out of his arms.
