Part 10

Max looked at her disbelievingly. “Talk? About what?” he asked.

They had been separated for almost two years now, divorced 18 months and in that time Liz had never wanted to talk to him. Even when they had slept together to restore the connection three months earlier she hadn’t wanted to talk to him so he wanted to know what had changed.

Liz took a deep breath. “Can we sit down?” She asked. “This is going to be kind of hard, for both of us,” she said.

“Sure,” Max sighed.

“Maybe we could open the blinds first?” she asked hopefully.

Without a word Max went over and opened the blinds on the front window allowing the sun to pour through.

Liz watched as his muscles worked as he moved and she unconsciously licked her lips, something that did not go unnoticed by Max who raised an eyebrow at her.

“Um do you think you could maybe put a shirt on?” Liz asked then. “You’re a bit distracting like that,” she added pointing to his chest.

Max chuckled a bit before he took off towards the laundry room, when he returned he had a crinkled shirt on.

“Thanks,” she said.

“So what do we have to talk about?” Max asked a little bitterly.

“You and Tess,” Liz answered.

Max sucked in a breath startled by her bluntness. “Why now?” He finally asked her. “It’s been almost 2 years.”

“I know,” she nodded. “But I need to know some things,” she said.

“Why?” Max asked.

“Zan’s protector Cal taught them a lot more about themselves and who they used to be. Some of that information you should know,” she said. “But before I tell you there are some things I need to know.”

“Ok,” he sighed.

“What happened?” She asked then. “Why did you sleep with her?” She whispered.

Max didn’t know where to start but he knew that this was his last shot to try and convince her he didn’t mean for it to happen, nor did he want to.

“I never wanted it to happen,” he said firstly.

“I don’t know if it was all the time we were spending together training and jogging but one day I just started to notice things I never had before. I’d get aroused around her,” he explained dropping his head in shame.

“I just tried to ignore it, but then that day Tess asked to use the shower?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Liz nodded remembering that day. Her and Max had kissed and joked about him owing her some sex for getting out of bed to go jogging with Tess, and he had told her he loved her.

“I walked into our bathroom to have a shower assuming Tess was using the main one but she wasn’t. She had just gotten out of our shower.”

“Who made the first move?” Liz asked. It was a stupid question and meant nothing but she needed to know.

“Tess,” He said. “But I couldn’t stop her, it was like my body wouldn’t let me.”

Liz nodded; her theory was starting to sound absolutely correct.

“What about the second time?” she gulped.

“Liz,” Max whispered and when she finally looked at him he answered.

“I was drunk,” he told her. “I have no idea what happened, or if anything did happen.”

“You were naked,” she pointed out.

“I know,” he said. “I’m sorry but I just don’t know what happened.”

“Ok,” Liz nodded.

“Why now?” Max asked then. “Why do you want to know this after all this time?”

Liz began to start a couple of times but couldn’t fine the right words. She chuckled a little then. “This is harder than I thought,” she told Max.

Max just sat waiting patiently for her to speak to him.

“Ok, well I guess I’ll just come straight out with it. As you know you were sent here for your safety. You were supposed to train so you were strong enough to go back to Antar. Obviously everything got screwed up when you crashed though. The thing is that the plan was very carefully constructed and they put fail safes into place,” Liz explained.

Max wasn’t sure why she was telling him this stuff; she of all people should understand that he didn’t really care. Why wasn’t she telling Michael this instead?

“One of those fail-safes was to program your DNA,” she said and looked up.

Max frowned. “What do you mean?” He asked.

“I don’t understand how they did it and Zan doesn’t know enough to explain it but your DNA was programmed.”

“What was I programmed to do, Liz?” He asked.

Liz took a deep breath as she tried to get her emotions under control. “To create an heir with Tess,” she whispered.

“What?” Max asked.

“When you reached sixteen, Tess’ body was programmed to release some type of alien pheromone which would attract you to her,” she said. “Obviously that attraction would result in the two of you sleeping together and having a baby,” she said.

“But that didn’t happen,” Max said.

“It did for Zan,” she said.

“What are you saying Liz?” Max asked bluntly.

“Think about it. Tess didn’t arrive in Roswell till after your birthday and she was only here several months.”

“Ok.”

“What if the pheromone was programmed to release every year until the mating occurred?” she asked.

Max sucked in a harsh breath as he realised what Liz was saying.

“I don’t think either of you had any control over happened,” Liz said. “I think it was inevitable that you and Tess were going to sleep together unless you never met.”

Max let out a harsh breath and tears came to his eyes. “You mean all of this is because of some stupid programming?” He asked. “That I lost the best thing in my life because some stupid people in a galaxy I couldn’t give a shit about wanted to play god with my life?”

He was openly sobbing now and Liz was having a hard time fighting her own tears. Did he really consider her the best thing in his life?

“I am so sorry Liz,” he sobbed.

Unable to stop her a moment longer Liz flew into his arms and hugged him close to her body.

“Shh it’s ok,” she told him trying to coax him to calm down. In all the years she had known him she had never seen him like this.

“You deserved so much better than me,” he said. “I should have left you alone after saving you. You didn’t deserve the way I treated you.”

“Max you always treated me like a Queen,” Liz whispered. “It wasn’t your fault,” she told him.

“I should have fought it harder,” he said.

Liz smiled at him a little then. “You fought it for a long time,” she told him.

“Did you come all this way just to tell me this?” He asked then. There was a hopeful glint in his voice that maybe now Liz knew the truth she could forgive him and that they could be together.

“You and Tess had the right to know,” she nodded.

“You’re going to tell her?” he asked.

Liz nodded. “Do you know where I can find her?”

Max looked surprised that Liz didn’t know. “Um, at Kyle’s I guess.”

“Wh-what?” Liz said confused.

“Tess came back to town about 8 months ago and her and Kyle worked things out,” he explained.

Liz felt like someone had punched her in the stomach. Even though she knew that Tess hadn’t tried to steal Max away from her it was still a blow to find out that the women who ruined her marriage was having her happily ever after. Liz didn’t know how Kyle had forgiven her.

Max could tell what Liz was thinking, he’d asked himself on a number of occasions why things had worked out for Tess yet not for him. He never found the answer.

“I’ll head over there tomorrow,” she said.

Max nodded and moved his arms as Liz began to get off his lap.

“Thank you,” he told her.

Liz smiled. “I should have told you months ago,” she said.

“What? How long have you known?”

Liz swallowed guiltily. “I found out just before you guys arrived in Vegas three months ago.”

“Why didn’t you say something then?” he asked.

“I didn’t know the full story and I had barely worked through it myself.” Liz tried to explain. “I always planned on telling you,” she said.

Max nodded.

Liz waited for him to say something else. Deep down she was hoping he would ask her if there was a chance for them, for him to tell her that he still loved her but he remained quiet.

“Are you happy?” he asked her simply.

“Excuse me?” Liz asked confused.

“In Vegas, are you happy?” he asked.

“I guess,” she replied.

Max nodded sadly, he understood now that Liz coming to Roswell to tell him about the programming didn’t change things. They were over and she had moved on with her life.

“That’s good,” he tried to smile but Liz could tell immediately that it was forced. “You deserve to be happy.”

Liz didn’t know what to say to him. It was obvious he was resigned to the fact that they were over and she felt tears spring to her eyes. She wanted to tell him that she had been happy with him but she couldn’t get the words to come out.

Max looked at the clock and sighed. “I have to get ready for work,” he said regretfully.

“Night shift?” she asked a small smile playing on her lips as she remember those nights he used to work when they were married.

“Um no, I offered to do a double for one of the other doctors. I’m just home catching a couple of hours sleep before I have to go back.”

“Oh” Liz frowned, that explained the dark circles under his eyes.

“You should really start looking after yourself a little better,” she told him.

Max smiled slightly, and then shrugged. “The only good thing in my life is my job,” he said.

His tone was dejected and his eyes dull and Liz knew he meant every word he said. He was no longer the Max Evans she was married to, he was dead. Killed by the people who set out when they created him to control his life.

“I’ll go then,” she said.

“How long are you in town?” he asked then

“For the week,” she said, she wanted to add that she hoped she would see him again but she didn’t think he would really believe her.

“Your parents must be really happy,” he said as he walked her to the door.

“Yeah, they are,” she replied.

“You should stop by for a burger,” she said then.

Max smiled sadly. “I don’t think I’d be very welcome,” he told her.

Liz nodded remembering the story her Dad had told her about throwing Max onto the street after he had come looking for her, and that he had been banned from the place ever since. As such her parents never set eyes on Max, or so they said.

“Bye Max.”

“Bye Liz,” Max said before he quietly shut the door behind her.

Part 11

Maria squealed when she opened the door and found Liz on the other side.

“Surprise,” Liz smiled and hugged her best friend.

“What are you doing here?” she asked. “You never told me you were coming.”

“I know, I wanted to surprise you,” Liz lied.

The truth was Liz didn’t tell anyone other than her parents that she was coming because she knew they would interfere in what she had to do.

“When did you get here?” she asked.

“Yesterday,” Liz replied sheepishly.

Maria’s eyes narrowed. “Then why am I only just seeing you?”

“Well I spent most of yesterday with my parents and then I had to do something last night.”

“Like what?” Maria asked knowing very well that Liz was keeping something from her.

“I went to see Max,” Liz admitted.

“What? Why?” she asked confused.

Since leaving Roswell Liz had only kept in contact with her and Alex, and through them Michael and Isabel. Part of the rules was that no one was allowed to tell Max where she was, how she was or how to get in contact with her. Liz would also never ask about Max.

So Maria wondered why all of a sudden Liz was visiting him.

“Does this have something to do with your connection?” she asked concerned.

Liz smiles sheepishly at her best friend. “I have to tell you something,” she said.

“What?”

They took a seat on Maria and Michael lounge and Maria got comfortable.

“Max and I restored the connection back in Vegas.”

“WHAT!” Maria cried. “How?”

Liz blushed. “You know how,” she told her.

“Oh my god, why are you only just telling me about this now?”

“Because I didn’t want anyone to know before because I didn’t think they’d understand.” Liz replied.

“Hell Yes,” she said. “Why would you do that Liz, you were finally free of him?”

“Because maybe I wasn’t ready to be free of him,” Liz said tears filling her eyes as she finally opened up to someone about the way she had been feeling for the past three months.

“Oh Liz,” Maria sighed. “Don’t tell me he’s sucked you back in?”

Liz shook her head at her friend. “There is so much going on that you don’t understand. Do you think when I left here I just turned my feelings off?”

“Of course not,” Maria replied. “I know better than anyone how hard leaving him was for you, and how hurt you were. But you have Zan now and you were happy.”

Liz didn’t answer Maria she looked down at her fingernails.

“Liz, you are happy aren’t you?” Maria asked

“I thought I was,” she admitted “But now I’m not so sure.”

“Oh chica,” Maria sighed and moved over on the couch so she could hug Liz.

“What would you do if you found something out that changed everything for you?”

“Um that’s a bit cryptic. Can you be more specific?” Maria replied.

“If Michael had cheated on you, and you broke up over it,” Liz started, “if you found out that it wasn’t his fault, that he had no control over it could you forgive him?” She asked.

Maria frowned. “Are you saying that Tess mind warped him?”

“No,” Liz shook her head.

“Well I guess it would depend on what it was that forced him to do it,” she said.

“Oh God Maria,” she cried. “These past three months have been so hard. I have so many thoughts going around in my mind and I just don’t know what to do anymore.”

“It’s ok,” Maria soothed. “Lets start from the beginning I promise I’ll help you sort it all out,” she told her.

Liz told Maria everything. Starting from her feelings about Zan and his deceit about who he was to her reluctance to be involved with him now. One of the main things that had attracted her to Alexander was that he was a normal person who treated her well.

She then explained to her what she had discovered about the programming and what it had done to Max and Tess. Maria was as shocked as Liz was and she now understood why Liz was so confused.

“So you see, I know now it wasn’t his fault,” she cried.

“Can you forgive him?” Maria asked her.

It was obvious that right now that Liz’s biggest dilemma was her feelings for Max. She couldn’t let him go but she didn’t know if she could ever forgive him.

“I think I already have,” she said with a sob.

Maria smiled at her best friend. She should have known that some things would never change. Roswell would always be famous for aliens, Michael would always have horrible hair, and Liz Parker would always be in love with Max Evans.

“He’s so different now,” she told Maria. “I can’t even talk to him.”

“Liz,” Maria started hesitantly. “We didn’t discuss Max after you left because you didn’t want to but he’s been like that for a very long time,” she said.

Liz frowned. “Tell me.”

“He shut down.” She shrugged. “He literally became a recluse who would only leave the house to go to work. He stopped eating, and training with the others. His parents were so concerned they tried to have him committed but Isabel wouldn’t allow it. She moved in with him for a while but because Alex was so angry with Max it started to cause problems between the so she moved back home.”

“It’s all my fault?”

“No honey,” Maria shook her head. “Don’t you see now that this is no one’s fault than those stupid beings in the sky? It’s destiny and once again it fucked you and Max over.”

Maria went to get some ice cream then and they continued to talk for a while about things going on in Roswell. Maria filled Liz in on Tess and Kyle.

“So he wont have anything to do with anything Alien except Tess?” Liz asked confused.

Maria laughed at the way Liz put it. “Pretty much,” she said. “I guess Kyle realised that he just couldn’t be happy with out her. He dated heaps after you left. Every skank we went to school with that was still in Roswell has fucked Kyle now,” Maria screwed up her nose.

“I think it took Jim stepping in to make him realise that he needed Tess.”

“What kind of wife am I then?” Liz cried. “Kyle can forgive Tess, a girl he’s only been with for a few years and I couldn’t even give my husband of five years the chance to explain.”

“Liz, it would never have changed things for you.” Maria pointed out. “The moment you found out he had lied and cheated on you it was over, we both know that.”

Maria knew that even if Max hadn’t been caught with Tess the second time that it would have been impossible for them to work things out. Sure they might have stayed together but Liz never would have trusted Max and he would have walked around on eggshells. They would have made each other so unhappy until one of them finally cracked.

“You made the right decision with the information you had,” Maria assured her.

“Thanks Ria,” she smiled sadly.

“So what now? You move back to Roswell and win the alien king back?” Maria winked.

Liz laughed. “Has there been anyone else?” She asked nervously.

“Of course not. You’re it for him,” she replied.

“Oh,” she swallowed guiltily.

“He won’t hold that against you,” Maria assured her knowing she was thinking about Zan.

“He might hold the fact I’m still with him against me. Zan doesn’t even know I’m here.”

Maria’s eyes widened. “You took off?”

“No, he’s in LA for a conference so I took the opportunity to come without him.”

“Smart,” Maria grinned.

“It wasn’t my plan to come home to get back with Max,” she tried to argue.

“Keep telling yourself that,” Maria grinned. “Besides you belong here.”

“I miss this place,” she admitted.

“What are you going to do?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” Liz admitted. “I don’t even know if Max wants to try again.”

“Of course he does,” Maria assured her. “He loves you.”

“I’m not sure anymore,” Liz told her.

Maria looked at Liz incredulously. “You of all people know better than that. Listen to you heart what does it tell you?” She asked.

Liz felt tears spring to her eyes as she exactly what Maria said. Maria’s words reminder her of Grandma Claudia.

Maria was surprised when Liz released a sob. “He never stopped loving me, just like I never stopped loving him.”

Maria smiled as she pulled Liz into a hug.

“I think you’ve made your decision,” she whispered. “Now all you have to do is convince Max its him you want, get re-married and live happily ever after,” she smiled.

Liz gulped then. “There’s something else I have to tell you,” she said.

“Um ok? Shoot,” Maria said.

“Max and I aren’t exactly… “

“What I’m trying to say is that we’re not….” Liz searched trying to find the right words.

“Spit it out,” Maria laughed.

“Max and I aren’t divorced,” she said. “I never submitted the papers.”

Maria’s eyes widened in shock that was one surprise she was not expecting.

Part 12

“I don’t know if this was a good idea,” Liz looked at Maria as they stood out the front of Kyle’s house on Milky Way.

“You already told them you were coming, not point in leaving now,” Maria pointed out.

Liz had been planning on going to talk to Tess by herself when Maria had offered to go with her. Liz hated the thought of having to confront the blonde alien by herself and had jumped at the chance to have Maria’s support.

“Ok.” Liz took a deep breath and walked forward and knocked on the door.

“Kyle,” Liz smiled when he answered the door a few minutes later.

“I was wondering how long you were going to stand out there,” he smiled.

“It’s good to see you,” Liz said stepping forward and hugging her friend.

“You too,” Kyle smiled.

“Hi Maria,” He added.

“Hey bro,” Maria teased. The Sheriff and Amy were once again dating and Kyle and Maria were resigned to the fact that eventually they would probably get married.

“Come in,” he said.

Once inside they followed Kyle into the house and into the living room where a nervous Tess was sitting.

When Liz had called and told Kyle that she wanted to speak with him and Tess, Tess had been worried. Her and Kyle were only just getting back on track and she was afraid Liz was coming back to try and ruin things between them. But when Kyle had said Liz had something important to tell him she had been intrigued.

“Hi Liz, Maria,” she said nervously.

“Tess,” Maria nodded politely.

“Hi Tess,” Liz replied.

Coming face to face with Tess Harding was easier than Liz anticipated. Years ago she swore if she ever saw her again she would rip those curls out but now with everything she knew, Liz found that she wasn’t angry anymore. In a way she felt sorry for Tess.

“Sit down,” Kyle encouraged.

“So Kyle said you wanted to talk to us, Liz?” Tess said.

“Yeah,” Liz replied with a nod.

“I’m not sure if Michael has informed you about what happened in Vegas last month?” she asked.

“He said that he found out that there were two sets of us and that we should be on the look outs for our dupes,” Tess said.

Liz shared a smile with Maria conveying how much she appreciated Michael filtering the story.

“Well that’s partly correct,” Liz nodded. “Maybe I should start from the beginning.”

“Ok,” Tess nodded.

“When I moved to Vegas I met a guy at work, his name was Alexander York,” Liz began. “Three months ago I discovered that Alexander York was a disguise. Alexander York is actually Zan, Max’s duplicate.”

“Your fucking kidding,” Kyle blew out a breath.

Liz laughed. “I wish I was.”

“Why is he hiding?” Tess asked.

“Lonnie and Rath tried to kill him so he fled New York. A disguise is his only way of being anonymous,” Liz replied.

“Ok, what happened then?”

“Well I didn’t believe him at first and I called Michael, I’m sure he filled you in on most of the information Zan provided but there was something that Zan told me that Michael didn’t know.”

“Like what?”

“Something that pertains to me, you and Max,” Liz answered.

She heard Kyle suck in a breath like he knew that she was about to bring up painful reminders of the past.

“I’m not here to hash out the past,” she assured them. “I saw Max yesterday and I told him this and I though I owed it to the both of you to tell you too.”

“Ok,” Kyle nodded.

“The four of you were sent here to train so you could return home strong and able to fight. Obviously when the ship crashed the plans got messed up. One set of pods was moved to New York and yours in a cave here in Roswell. What we didn’t know, and what Nasedo didn’t tell anyone for some reason was that the people that created you put fail safes in place to ensure the mission was successful.”

“What types of fail safes?” Tess asked.

“That an heir to the throne of Antar was born.”

“Oh God,” Kyle sighed.

“Part of that fail safe meant that your’s and Max’s DNA was programmed.”

“Are you telling me that Max and I were programmed to mate?” Tess asks shocked.

“Yes,” Liz nodded. “After your 16 birthday you would release some type of alien pheromone which would attract you to Max and vice versa. I’ve spoken to Max about the events leading up to that day….”

“It was the programming wasn’t it?” Tess whispered painfully. She turned to Kyle then. “Neither of us wanted to do it, we were both disgusted with ourselves afterwards.”

“What about the second time?” Kyle asked.

Liz swallowed the lump in her throat. “Max can’t remember that night. He said he was drinking but he doesn’t even remember how Tess got to the house,” she replied.

“He was drunk when I got there,” Tess said. “I figured the drink was helping so I had some too,” she said. “I don’t’ remember anything after that either.”

“Zan said once the programming kicked it, it lasted for a month.”

“I left a few days later,” Tess said sadly.

“I don’t know much about it but I’m assuming that after you were 16 the programming kicked in every year until it was successful.”

“Oh my God,” Tess cried.

Kyle wrapped an arm around her in comfort. “I’m so sorry Kyle,” Liz heard her whispered.

Kyle murmured some comforting words to her and she calmed down a few seconds later.

“I can never tell you how sorry I am Liz,” she said sincerely. “But I want you to know I never meant to do it. I didn’t want to ruin things between you and Max. I love Kyle and I only wanted to be with him.”

Liz nodded sadly. “I know that now but thank you anyway your apology means a lot.”

Maria reached a comforting hand out for Liz giving her, her silent support.

After answering a few questions Kyle and Tess had Liz and Maria said goodbye and left the two of them to talk through everything together. It was obvious they needed some time to process what they’d learnt. Liz thought of Max then. She wondered if he had called his sister or Michael to talk or if he had just kept everything bottled up.

She still had no idea what she was going to about Max or Zan but one thing she did know was that time was running out and she would have to make a decision soon.

***

Zan had a skip in his step as he charged up the stairs to Liz’s apartment.

One of the main speakers at the conference he was attending fell sick and as such the rest of the conference was cancelled. He had jumped on the next flight home and couldn’t wait to surprise Liz.

He knocked on the door and waited for Liz to answer but a few minutes later he was frowning at the unopened door.

He looked at his watch then and noticed that it had only just gone five and Liz was possibly working late so he dialled her number at the office.

“Mayne Labs, Karen speaking.”

“Hi Karen it’s Alexander. I was hoping to catch Liz,” he replied.

“Hi Alexander,” Karen smile. “I’m sorry but Liz is on holidays,” she answered.

A few people in the office knew that they were dating but Liz preferred to keep things quiet and professional at work.

“Oh,” Zan frowned. “I didn’t realise. When did she go off?”

“Oh she’s off for the whole week. I think I heard her telling Serena she was going home to visit family.”

“To Roswell?” he asked shocked.

“Yeah, that’s it,” she smiled.

“Um ok then. Thanks Karen.”

“No prob, see you later Alexander,” she said flirtatiously.

As soon as Zan hung up the phone he dialled the airport and got a seat on the next flight to Roswell New Mexico.

***

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay the night?” Maria asked Liz as she walked her out to her car.

Liz laughed at Maria. After spending the night having dinner, and catching up with Michael, Isabel, and Alex, Liz was in better spirits than she had been in weeks.

“It’s fine, I’m sure my parents are wondering if they’re going to see me again,” Liz laughed. Since arriving two days ago Liz had barely been home. “Besides it’s been so long since I’ve had the opportunity to sleep in my old bed.”

“So are you going to talk to Max tomorrow?” Maria asked.

Liz nodded hesitantly. “I have no idea what I’m going to say but yeah.”

“Give him the divorce papers that will say it all,” Maria smiled.

Liz smiled back; she had the papers in her suitcase. When she had packed them she had been unsure why. Maybe in the back of her mind she intended to tell Max or maybe she had just intended to file them.

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” Liz promised stepping forward and hugging her best friend.

Liz hopped in her car then and drove the familiar streets to the Crashdown. Looking at the clock she saw that it was midnight and the diner would be closed.

She entered the apartment through the side door and was surprised that the lights were all still on.

“Hi Mum, Dad, I’m home,” she called out.

“Your parents have gone to bed.”

Liz almost jumped a foot when she heard the voice, her hand covering her heart as she looked up and came eye to eye with Zan.

“Zan? What are you doing here?” She asked shocked.

Zan smiled slightly. “I could ask you the same thing,” he said.

“My parents live here,” Liz snapped.

“Why are you in Roswell, Liz?” he asked.

“Because I missed my family and friends. I don’t have to ask your permission to come home, Zan. Now what are you doing here, I thought you were in LA?” she replied and her voice left no doubt that she wasn’t happy about his arrival.

“It finished up early so I came home to surprise you, and I was the one who got surprise wasn’t I. Found out from work that you took some holidays and went home to visit family. Thought I better come and see why you would take off without telling me?” He shrugged. “I was worried about you,” he added then.

Liz instantly felt bad and sighed. “I’m sorry I just got really homesick all of a sudden I and needed to come home. I’m fine, everything is fine.”

Zan nodded but deep down he didn’t believe her.

“So where have you been?” He asked. “I got in a few hours ago and luckily your mother was so happy to meet me she had no problem letting me wait for you.”

“I was having dinner at Maria and Michaels,” Liz replied. “Where are you staying?” She asked then.

Zan grinned then. “Your mum said I could stay here,” he said proudly.

Liz frowned and reminded herself to have a chat with her mother the next day. She didn’t know Zan from a bar of soap and she was just inviting him to stay.

“In the spare room of course,” he said seeing that Liz didn’t look too happy.

Liz nodded then and went to step around Zan. “It’s late. We should head to bed,” she said.

“Liz,” Zan said stopping her from passing him and wrapping his arms around her and pulling her against his chest. “I missed you so much,” he whispered.

Liz closed her eyes as tears sprung to her eyes. “I missed you too,” she replied.

Part 13

Liz’s good spirits from the night before were well and truly gone the next morning. Her parents insisted on having breakfast with her and Zan where her mother went about giving Zan the third degree.

“You sound like a man who knows what he wants,” Nancy smiled at Zan as he explained how it had taken him a year to get Liz to date him.

“I think this one’s a keeper this time, Liz,” she smiled at her daughter. Liz, however, didn’t smile back. She recognised the jab for what it was. Her mother’s way of pointing out how much better Zan was than Max, and Liz didn’t like it.

“So how long will you be staying Zan?” Nancy asked.

Zan smiled and looked at Liz. “I’m not sure its up to Liz,” he replied.

Liz sighed and resisted the urge to tell him she didn’t want him here in the first place. She knew that Zan was just trying to be a good boyfriend but Liz had come to Roswell to get away from him, and the last thing she wanted was for him to be here at the moment. It just made everything that much harder.

“You should show Zan around Roswell this morning, Liz,” Jeff spoke up then and suggested. He could tell that his daughter looked less than happy with the new arrival.

Liz nodded and a few seconds later excused herself to go get ready to do so.

A half an hour later her and Zan were driving around in Liz’s rental car, Liz pointing out the sights.

“Are you ok?” Zan asked her.

“Fine, why?” Liz replied.

“You were very quiet during breakfast and you’ve barely said a word to me since we got in the car,” he pointed out.

Liz sighed and pulled the car over on the side of the road. “You shouldn’t have come,” she told him.

“Oh,” Zan frowned. “Ok, why?”

“Because now my mum thinks we’re on the verge of getting married which is far from the truth, and I have things I have to take care of and I feel like I can’t…”

“Woah,” Zan laughed.

“I know you’re not ready for marriage at the moment, and I’m sure if you explain that to your mum she’ll understand too,” he said.

“It’s not just that,” Liz snapped.

“I was in the middle of things here and now I feel like I can’t finish them because you’re here.”

Zan frowned. “What types of things?” he asked.

“Telling Tess and Max the truth,” she answered not looking at him.

“Well I could help,” he suggested.

Liz shook her head in disbelief. “Yeah I’m sure Max would love that.”

Before Zan could respond to her comment Liz put the car back into gear and headed for the Crashdown. When they arrived, to Liz’s surprise, Kyle was there so Liz introduced him and Zan.

“Lizzie do you think you could help me out for a little while?” Jeff Parker asked his daughter hopefully when he saw her sitting in a booth with Kyle and Zan. He didn’t really need help but he wanted to give his daughter a reprieve, her face looked strained and she was barely holding on.

“Sure,” she answered happy to get away from Zan for a few minutes. She knew she was being terribly unfair to him. She was confused and she was taking out her feelings on him. But she just couldn’t help it.

Zan sat and talked with Kyle as he watched Liz move around the Crashdown. Kyle thought it was funny the way he watched her exactly the way Max always had, and told Zan so.

“Hey man since Liz is busy here do you want to shoot some hoops or something?” Kyle asked trying to be helpful.

“Um yeah sure,” Zan nodded. He liked Kyle, or what he knew of him so far.

Zan waited for Liz to finish serving a customer before he told her what he was planning on doing.

“Thanks Lizzie I’m right now,” Jeff Parker called out.

“Ok,” she nodded.

Liz followed Zan up the stairs as he went to change. Kyle had run home to get changed too and was swinging back to pick Zan up in a few minutes.

“I shouldn’t be too long,” Zan said when he came into her room dressed to play. “I’ll see you soon,” he kissed her.

“Have fun,” Liz smiled as he left. She was glad that he had hit things off with Kyle despite her bad mood.

She waited till she heard the apartment door close before she rooted through her suitcases and pulled out what she was looking for. Then checking her appearance, she ran a brush through her hair and applied some lip-gloss before she made her way down the stairs.

Unfortunately for Liz though she hadn’t timed her departure well enough and ran smack into Zan as she was heading for her rental car, the contents in her hands spilling to the floor.

“Shit,” she cursed and bent down to pick them up but Zan beat her to it.

He frowned as he looked at the papers in his hands. “Liz?” He looked up questionably.

Liz snatched the papers from Zan’s hands and shoved them into her purse.

“Why do you have your divorce papers?” He questioned. “Shouldn’t you have filed those?”

It was obvious at first glance that they weren’t copies. Zan didn’t know a lot about getting divorced but he was pretty sure you weren’t mean to hang on to the originals.

“Liz?” He questioned when she didn’t answer.

“I haven’t filed them yet,” she whispered.

Zan’s eyes went wide, “What?” He questioned not sure he heard her correctly.

Tears instantly sprang to Liz’s eyes and she looked away, biting on her lip.

“Why would you do that?” He asked completely confused.

“Because I just couldn’t,” she whispered. “I went down there like a hundred times but I just couldn’t hand them over.”

Zan instantly felt sorry for her but at the same time he was annoyed.

“So you and Max are still married?” he questioned.

“Technically,” she answered.

“So where were you going right now with those?” He questioned.

Once again Liz looked away guiltily. “You were going to see Max?” He guessed.

Liz nodded. Zan stared at her for a few minutes, his hurt growing by the second. He couldn’t believe that Liz had kept that information from him. It was important and he wondered if all this time while he was planning for a future which involved them together if Liz had other ideas.

“Max deserves to know,” was Liz’s weak response.

They stood there staring at each other for what felt like an eternity until Kyle pulled up.

“You ready man?” He asked.

Without looking at him Zan nodded. “We’ll talk about this when you get back,” he whispered.

Liz blankly nodded. She watched as he got into the car with Kyle and drove away. A couple of seconds she hopped behind the wheel of her rental and drove to Max’s.

***

Liz frowned as she pulled into the driveway, noticing the For Sale sign immediately. The door was open when she walked up the porch so she knocked on the wire screen, clutching her purse with the papers inside to her chest.

“Hey,” Max greeted, surprised to see her again.

“Um hi,” Liz replied.

Max opened the door for her and stood aside allowing her to enter. The first thing Liz noticed this time upon entering that everything was different. There were boxers everywhere and it was obvious that Max was packing.

“What’s going on?” Liz asked.

Max scratched his ear nervously. “I have the house up for sale,” he shrugged. “My parents have been trying to convince me to move into an apartment for a while now and I finally gave in.”

“Why?” Liz choked out, her emotions almost getting the better of her.

“I don’t really have time to look after this place anymore and I guess there are just too many memories,” he replied.

He watched closely as all the emotions crossed Liz’s face. For an instant he felt bad but then he realised that Liz was probably just feeling sorry for him. For the pathetic life he lived.

Liz however was shocked and sad that the house they had picked and bought together, their very first married home would soon be gone.

Tears sprang to her eyes and she couldn’t hide them from Max this time and instead wiped at them furiously. “Wow I’m being such a girl.”

Max wanted to hug her but he didn’t think it would be welcome so he kept his distance across the room, leaning on the doorframe.

“Hello, Max,” they both turned and looked towards the door at the voices and watched as Mr and Mrs Evans entered the house, more boxers in hand.

“Liz!” Dianne Evans exclaimed surprised.

“Hi Dianne, Phillip,” she whispered.

“We bought the trailer over,” Phillip explained to Max who simply nodded.

Feeling completely out of place and sadder by the second Liz pulled the papers out of her bag and placed them on the coffee table.

“I just wanted to drop something over,” she whispered as she started to back out towards the door.

Max opened his mouth to stop her. “I’ll just see you later, bye Dianne by Phillip,” she said before she turned and fled the house.

Max watched her go through the front window, his brow furrowed in confusion.
“What was that all about darling?” Dianne asked concerned.

Max looked at him mum “I have no idea,” he told her.

***

Liz was relieved when she entered the apartment and found it empty.

She fled to her room, and locked the door before she crumpled onto the bed sobbing.

Every hour she was in Roswell she became more confused.

She had a loving boyfriend, who in her own way she did love, who was trying to be there for her, to be understanding.

On the other hand she couldn’t seem to let go of her ex-husband who for all apparent reason didn’t seem to want anything to do with her anymore.

She lay on the bed for half an hour before she pulled herself together and went for a shower. She knew that Zan would want to talk when he got back and she needed to be ready.

Part 14

Phillip Evans had just finished loading the trailer when he walked back into the living room and looked around at all the furniture still left. There was no way Max could fit it all in an apartment and he thought he might speak to Liz and ask if there was anything she would like. After all, it was only fair considering she had never contacted Max or him about a settlement.

He spied the papers on the table then, which hadn’t been there earlier and unable to stop himself he picked them up.

He frowned as he browsed over the contents. “Max?” He called out.

Max emerged from upstairs with another box in his arms a few seconds later.

“Yeah?”

“What is this?” He asked showing him the papers.

Max frowned and took them from his father, and looked them over. “It looks like copies of my divorce papers,” he finally whispered.

“No Max,” Phillip shook his head. “This is no copy.”

Max looked up at his father confused. “Where did you get this?” Phillip asked.

“Liz left it here,” Max shrugged. “What is it then?”

“What’s going on?” Dianne asked as she entered the room and saw the pale face of her husband.

“Um Max I hate to tell you this but these are the originals,” he said. “See it says copy 1 of 3,” Phillip new very well that copy 2 was in his office, and copy 1 should have been lodged with the dept of births, deaths and marriages. He assumed copy 3 was still in Liz’s possession.

“What does this mean?” Max asked.

“It means son, that by all accounts you and Liz are still married,” he said.

***

Zan stood at the counter and watched Liz as she sat in the booth playing with her hands.

“Were you going to tell me?” He asked.

“Eventually,” she said. “I guess in some ways I refused to acknowledge it myself.”

“I saw those papers Liz, Max and you had both signed them so what happened?” He asked.

“I went to give them to my solicitor so many times but in the end I just couldn’t,” she told him, tears in her eyes.

“But your marriage is over, that’s the way you wanted it, I don’t understand.”

“Of course you wouldn’t,” Liz told him. “You’ve never been married before.”

“True but I hope to be someday,” he whispered.

Liz looked at him then and felt her guilt magnify. She knew he meant marry her.

“I thought when I married it would be forever,” she whispered. “There were no back up plans, and definitely no plans to ever get divorced.”

“That’s understandable. You thought Max was the love of your life, and fate was unkind to you,” he offered.

Liz felt a sob well in her throat then and Zan was surprised when she let it go. He walked over and pulled her out of her seat and into a hug. This was the first time, other that the night he had told her about the programming that Liz had actually showed any type of emotions over what had happened to her.

He was angry with her but he knew he could forgive her.

“We’ll get it all sorted out,” he whispered.

“How?” Liz asked.

“I’m sure Max’s father can take care of everything, he’s a lawyer isn’t he?”

Liz cried harder then because her first thought was, she didn’t want it sorted out.

“Liz?” Zan looked down at her.

“I’m sorry,” she cried.

“Sweetie what’s wrong?”

“I can’t,” she cried. She pulled back from his slightly then. “I’m not ready.”

Zan smiled at her then and reached up to wipe a cheek. “I can wait as long as you want,” he said.

“No,” she shook her head. “I’m not ready for it to end,” she cried.

“Liz?” he frowned.

“I didn’t put those papers in because I wasn’t ready and I’m still not, Zan. I don’t want my marriage to be over,” she sobbed.

***

Max couldn’t get to her fast enough. As soon as his father had told him they weren’t divorced, he had fled the house to get to Liz. He had to know why? And he had to see her face when she answered him.

He wasn’t however prepared for what he found.

He stood at the front doors to the Crashdown and watched her wrapped in Alexander’s arms. He knew it was Zan underneath and that hurt a little bit more because he knew that he could still give Liz everything that she needed.

He took a step back intending on disappearing without Liz even knowing he was there. He should have known that Zan would be with her. They were together now, that was obvious.

He was just about to turn his back when Liz’s eyes shot up from Zan’s chest and met with his.

She took a step towards him and he could see his name tumble from her lips but he couldn’t stop so instead he turned and ran back to his jeep as quickly as his legs would take him.

***

“Max?”

Zan frowned when he heard the words tumble from Liz’s mouth and before he knew what was happening she was out of his arms and rushing out the front of the closed restaurant.

He quickly followed her and found her standing and watching the taillights of a black jeep disappear.

“Was that Max?” Zan asked.

Liz nodded sadly. “I have to go talk to him,” she whispered. “He’s upset.”

“Its not like he doesn’t know we’re together Liz,” Zan pointed out.

“He’s upset about the divorce papers ok,” she cried.

Zan frowned as he watched Liz.

“I have to go see him,” she told him walking past him and back into the restaurant.

Zan followed slowly, he had just reached the stairs to the apartment upstairs when Liz came running back down them.

“Liz, what are you doing?” He whispered.

Liz stopped when she heard the tone in Zan’s voice and the pained look on his face.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered and she truly meant it. She knew that she would have to make a decision soon and that in the end someone would get hurt, and in a way including herself.

“I love you,” he told her.

Liz nodded. “Do you love me?” Zan asked.

Liz slowly nodded, tears springing to her eyes. “But you still love Max too don’t you?” He whispered.

Once again, Liz slowly nodded.

Zan sucked in breath and stumbled a few steps back. In his mind he knew that was true but hearing it from Liz’s lips sounded all that much real.

“Are you going back to him?” He asked.

“I don’t know,” she admitted honestly. “I just need to talk to him.”

Zan simply nodded, he didn’t try to stop Liz as she walked out the back door and once she was gone he slid to the ground and cradled his head in his hands wondering how everything had gone so wrong.

***

Dianne smiled as she opened the door to Liz. “Hi Liz,” she said and opened the door to let her in.

“Hi Dianne,” she smiled.

“He’s upstairs,” she told her. Max hadn’t said a word when he gotten back ten minutes ago. He hadn’t been gone long enough to see Liz and Dianne and Phillip had assumed that something must have happened.

“Thanks,” Liz smiled and moved past her to head up stairs. She felt awkward now with her mother in law, in the years her and Max had been together they had gotten close.

“Phillip and I are leaving now sweetie, it was nice seeing you,” Dianne smiled kindly.

“You too Dianne,” Liz said.

Walking up the stairs was scary for Liz. She remembered the last time that she took this walk and it was one she would like to forget. The bedroom door was opened as she approached and she found Max standing and looking out their bedroom window. When she walked closer she could see he was watching the young children from next-door playing. There were two boys and a girl and she smiled as she thought of him and Isabel.

“I always hoped we’d raise our kids in this house,” Max whispered.

Liz sat on the edge of the bed and listened to him.

“It’s one of the reasons I finally agreed to sell this place. All the dreams we had when we bought it are gone and I’ve spent the past two years hoping and praying that if I held on just a little bit longer I might be able to make it all better.”

“Why did you run?” Liz asked him.

Max turned to face her then, and his face showed he wasn’t quite sure what she meant. “From the Crashdown, why did you take off?”

“You were with Zan,” he shrugged.

“He showed up yesterday,” Liz told him. “He was supposed to be LA.”

“You obviously mean a lot to him to come all this way,” Max whispered. He knew that if Liz was his and had gone somewhere, where there was a man that loved her too he would do the same.

“Just him?” She asked and finally looked up.

Max stood and stared at Liz a little unsure of what she was asking him.

“You know what you mean to me,” he finally whispered. “You’re my everything.”

Tears sprang to Liz’s eyes at his words and she wiped at them with a small smile.

“Are those the original divorce papers downstairs Liz?” He asked then.

Liz nodded slowly.

Max sucked in a harsh breath, “So we’re not divorced?”

Liz shook her head hesitantly.

“Why did you want to give them to me? What do you want me to do with them?” Max asked.

“I guess in a way I wanted you to know that even though I took off and left you I didn’t totally give up hope,” she whispered. “Deep down I always wanted to believe that things would work out for us one way or another.”

Liz could hear Max visibly sucking in air at her confession.

“What do you want to do with the divorce papers?” Liz asked, she was finding the carpet very interesting all of a sudden.

Max watched as Liz refused to meet his eyes and took a few steps forward until he was standing in front of her.

“Liz?” He whispered.

Liz looked up slowly and almost gasped at the emotion she saw in his amber eyes.

“I want to tear them up,” he told her,

Liz rose to her feet in the space between them and her hands rose and pressed against his chest.

Max didn’t need another invitation he leaned down and pressed his lips against Liz’s. Liz eagerly responded and soon they were wrapped tightly together kissing like there was no tomorrow. When they pulled apart Max rested his forehead against Liz’s, a small smile on his lips.

“What does this mean?” He asked.

“I’m not sure,” Liz admitted honestly. “As you know my life is pretty complicated at the moment.”

“Yeah,” he whispered.

“Maybe,” she suggested leaning up and kissing him again, “Maybe we should both take the time to think about what we really want.”

Max leaned in and captured her lips again, it had been too long since he’d been able to kiss her freely, he already knew exactly what he wanted and he was pretty sure Liz did too, but he also sensed that she was having a hard time giving into her heart. “Ok,” he agreed.

Part 15

Liz was surprised when she got back to the apartment to find Zan sitting out on her balcony. She hadn’t been out there since she had gotten home; there were too many memories of Max out there.

Taking a deep breath she slid through the window and out onto the balcony.

Zan looked up when she entered. He was sitting out there wondering if she was ever going to come home to him. He watched as she looked around, a bittersweet smile on her face briefly before she turned to him.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi,” he replied.

Liz didn’t know what to say. It all seemed so easy when she was in Max’s arms. She knew without a doubt that she still loved her husband and that if she decided to give him a second chance that they would no doubt make things work between them. Liz knew she could be happy.

But now she was back and standing face to face with Alexander it didn’t seem so black and white. Zan was the man who had helped heal her heart over the past two years. She hadn’t expected him to come into her life but he had and for the time she had let him into her heart he had taken care of it. Things with Zan were uncomplicated.

It was a surprise really since he was just as much an alien as Max.

“But you didn’t spend years with Zan,” she reminded herself.

“Your mother was looking for you,” Zan interrupted her thoughts.

“What did you tell her?” She asked. She knew her mother would have a cow if she found out that Liz was socialising with Max let alone not really divorced.

“I told her you went to see Maria,” he said.

“Oh,” Liz said surprised. “Thank you.”

Zan shrugged, “It’s obvious your mum doesn’t think a lot of Max, she thinks he’s bad for you.”

Liz could hear in the underlying tone of Zan’s statement that he agreed with her mother.

“What do you think?” She asked him.

Zan laughs at her question. “I think he’s really bad for our relationship,” he told her honestly. “You can’t have both of us Liz, you have to choose,” he said.

Deep down Zan wanted to hate Max but in the end he just couldn’t.

“It’s not that easy,” Liz replied as she took a step closer to Zan.

Zan seemed surprised and hurt by Liz’s comment and Liz saw it straight away. “All the reasons I left, they’ve changed….” Liz whispered hoping that she could make Zan understand.

In some ways Liz guessed that she was trying to get Zan to make it easy for her. That way she might not have to make a decision and break one of the men in her life’s heart. She loved them both but at the same time that love was completely different.

“Max is still who he is, that hasn’t changed,” Zan pointed out.

“And you’re that same person,” Liz argued back.

“I don’t have the responsibilities he does, I’m essentially dead,” Zan replied.

“Do you think I would have been so accepting of you if my issues with Max were about who he was?” Liz asked.

“Max might not have set out to cheat on you or did it of his own free will, but who he is caused those things. Who he is hurt you.”

“You don’t need to tell me that,” Liz snapped.

Zan held his hands up in defeat, that last thing he wanted to do was argue with Liz.

“Before,” he started hesitantly, “when Max showed up and took off you said he was upset about the divorce papers.”

“Yeah,” Liz nodded.

Zan eyed her then. “How did you know that?” He asked.

He had been thinking about it for the past hour and he couldn’t shake the feeling inside that Liz had been keeping something very important from him.

Liz swallowed nervously and avoided Zan’s penetrating gaze. “It was obvious,” she shrugged.

Zan didn’t buy it for a second so standing up he approached her slowly.

Liz didn’t stop him as he wrapped his arms around her.

“I love you Liz,” he whispered.

Liz nodded guiltily but Zan would have none of it and using her chin he brought her gaze up to meet his. It took a few seconds for Liz to realise what he was doing and by the time she tried to shut her eyes it was too late Zan had already formed a connection.

Liz wasted not time pushing him out of her mind and when she was back to awareness she shoved out of his arms.

“What the hell Zan,” she cursed.

Zan sank to the lounge chair shattered. The connection with Liz hadn’t lasted long but it was long enough to confirm his suspicions.

“You had no right to do that,” she continued when he didn’t respond.

When Zan continued to ignore her Liz finally turned her attention to him. He was sitting in her lounge chair with his head in his hands.

“Zan?”

When he finally looked up Liz almost gasped in shock. He looked wrecked.

“You bonded with him again?” He whispered devastated.

Liz’s heart sank. This wasn’t the way she wanted Zan to find out everything. She had thought she had done an ok job from stopping him seeing anything through the connection but obviously she was wrong.

“Why would you do that?” He whispered.

Sighing Liz sat down against the wall, facing Zan. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“Why?” Zan asked

“I never did it to hurt you,” she said wanting him to know that from the word go. “But you had no right to do what you did that day.”

There was no accusation in Liz’s voice, she was gentle but honest.

“I did it for you,” he told her.

“No you didn’t, you did it for you, Zan,” Liz said gently.

“That’s not true,” Zan denied.

“Zan,” Liz sighed. “I gave that part of myself to Max a very long time ago. You can’t comprehend how big a part of my life our connection and bond was, and when you took it away you left me empty.”

Zan looked away feeling guilty for a moment. “I couldn’t function without it and truthfully I didn’t want to,” Liz whispered.

“So you had him restore it?” Zan asked.

Liz nodded. She was glad in a way that Zan didn’t realise that she had slept with Max to do so. It was dishonest of her not to tell him but in the end it would only serve to hurt him more.

“I don’t understand why you would want to stay connected to someone you don’t want to be with anymore?” Zan said then.

“Because for better or worse the day Max healed me he made me apart of him, and I chose to make him a part of me,” Liz replied.

“What about us?” Zan asked. “There is no hope for us to ever have that now,” he reminded her.

Liz closed her eyes briefly and when she opened them there were tears brimming. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “But I already have that part of myself to someone, and I won’t take that back just because it didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, or planned. That would be like me saying I regretted doing it in the first place or that it didn’t mean all the things to me that it does mean.”

Zan looked away so Liz couldn’t see the tears in his eyes.

“And your divorce?” He asked. “What did Max say about that?”

Liz looked away guiltily. “I think you know what he wanted to do.”

“He wants you back,” Zan answered her. “He’s always wanted you back.”

Liz nodded. She hadn’t been so sure of that fact herself until an hour ago but now she knew without a doubt that she was and would be the only women for Max Evans, ever.

“Well he can’t have you,” Zan declared.

“Excuse me?” Liz said surprised.

“I said he can’t have you,” Zan smiled. “If you think I’m going to stand back and watch him try to woo you back you’re dead wrong,” he informed Liz.

Liz gulped. The last thing she wanted was for Max and Zan to start vying for her. She also realised that it could be disastrous.

“And what if I choose him?” She whispered.

Zan’s confidence faltered. “Do you?”

“I love him,” she whispered.

“You love me too don’t you?” Zan asked.

Liz nodded slowly.

That was all Zan needed to know. Kneeling down he cupped Liz’s chin and raised her face to his and leaned in until his lips were a mere breath away.

“Open up to me,” he pleaded. “I want you to see me.”

This was something that Zan had never done with anyone but he wanted Liz to see him and to see how much she meant to him.

Nodding slowly Liz allowed him to open the connection as his lips came down on hers. He kissed her passionately and reluctantly Liz opened up to him too.

Flash

Zan growing up in the sewers of New York with Lonnie, Rath & Ava

Zan’s feeling for Ava. He loved her but he knew she wasn’t the one for him.

The day his sister and second tried to kill him.

Leaving New York and arriving in Vegas.

The first day he saw Liz.

The first time he met Liz.

The day he found Liz crying over her divorce.

Seeing Liz smiling and laughing.

Their first date.

The first time they made love

Zan’s feelings for her were almost too overwhelming. It was different to seeing inside of Max, but at the same time it took her breath away.

Zan was just about to withdraw from the connection, happy that he had showed Liz about his life and how he felt about her when he got a series of flashes from her.

Flash

The day Max saved Liz.

Max and Liz’s first date.

The first time they made love

Their wedding day

The day they moved into their very own house.

The day Liz discovered Max’s betrayal.

Meeting Zan for the first time.

The day she finally agreed to go out with him

Their first date

The first time they made love

Discovering Zan was an alien and finding out about the programming.

Liz and Max making love to restore their connection.

Coming to Roswell.

Zan pulled back with a gasp, falling onto his ass in front of Liz.

Liz opened her eyes slowly. She didn’t know what had caused all the flashes but it felt strange sharing that part of herself with someone other than Max.

She looked at Zan then, “Zan?” She questioned.

When he looked up Liz could see the tears in his eyes. “What did you see?” She asked.

Part 16

“What did you see?” Zan heard her ask.

Without answering Zan rose to his feet. “I need to go for a walk,” he whispered.

He didn’t wait for Liz to respond, like an expert he jumped over the side of the balcony and descended the ladder until his feet hit the alley floor.

“Zan!” Liz cried as she looked over the top.

Zan paused for a second and looked up at Liz to see the questions in her eyes before he dug his hands into his pocket and walked away.

After leaving the alley Zan walked around Roswell not really sure where he was going but just needing to be by himself.

The flashes he had received from Liz had been unexpected and had hurt like hell. He had already guessed that Liz and Max had been deeply in love; they had to have been to share the type of connection he knew they shared but to see and feel exactly how Liz felt about Max had been excruciating. He had been faced with Liz’s feelings for Max compared to her feelings for him and he knew that in the end it would be him that would come up short every time.

The magnitude of the love Liz shared for Max amazed and devastated Zan because he didn’t truly believe that Max deserved it.

He didn’t know his way around Roswell very well so he was surprised when he finally looked up he recognised the small house in front of him. It was the one he had seen in Liz’s flashes. It was where Max lived.

The first thing Zan noticed was the for sale sign out the front. He wondered if Max was going somewhere, Liz hadn’t mentioned anything.

Before he knew it he was walking up the path and knocking on the door.

Max frowned when he opened his door and saw who was standing on the other side.

“You and I need to talk,” Zan stated firmly.

Without speaking Max opened the door and allowed Zan into his house.

The house was pretty much empty. The only thing that the Evans hadn’t removed was a lounge and coffee table in the living room.

Max watched as he looked around. He was curious to the reason Zan was here, hopeful that maybe Liz had ended things between them.

“So you wanted to talk,” Max finally said.

“I want to know what you intend on doing with the divorce papers?” Zan said bluntly.

“That’s between Liz and I,” Max replied.

“No its not,” Zan shook his head. “You and I both know that Liz isn’t strong enough to do what we both know she intended on doing all along. I’m here to ask if you’re going to be man enough to do it for her?”

“Look, Zan,” Max sighed. “I don’t know you but you’re obviously a pretty great guy,” he said. “I know Liz wouldn’t settle for anything less,” he smiled slightly. “But Liz and I are none of your business.”

Zan felt himself getting angry.

“You should talk to Liz.”

“I already have,” Zan snapped.

“And?” Max asked.

“Look, I know that the two of you restored your connection but that doesn’t change things. Liz and I are together now and until she’s free of you, until you’re divorced we can’t move forward.”

Max smiled sadly. “I’m not the one chasing Liz,” Max pointed out, “but if you’re here asking me to give up on her well I’m sorry that’s never going to happen. I love Liz and I’ll never give up hope that she’ll come back to me.”

Zan growled. “You fucked her over,” he said angrily. “All you’ve ever done is hurt her. Why can’t you leave her alone now?”

Surprisingly Zan’s words didn’t upset Max. He knew they were true. Liz would have been better if she had never met him. Her life certainly would have been different.

“Because she’s my world,” Max whispered. “That might be selfish of me,” he shrugged, “but it’s the way I feel.”

Max watched as Zan sank to the couch with an almost defeated look on his face. “How did you do it?” He asked then.

“What?” Max asked as he leaned against the nearby wall.

“Live without her?”

The corners of Max’s mouth turned up. “Look at me,” he said. “I’d hardly call what I’m doing living. I’m surviving that’s about it and the only thing that makes me get up every morning is knowing that she’s out there and she’s happy.”

“She told you she was happy?” Zan asked.

Max considered his answer. “You made her happy,” he answered and he had. For the first six months Liz was content. Zan didn’t need to know that everything had changed when he had revealed himself and with it the truth about what had really happened between Max and Tess.

Nodding Zan stood up slowly and headed towards the door. He was about to walk through it when he turned to look back at Max.

“Thanks,” he said.

Max simply nodded. Like Zan he wanted to hate his dupe but he couldn’t. Zan had been there for Liz, and taken care of her when he couldn’t be and for that he would be grateful to him forever.

***

While Zan was gone Liz had sat on her balcony, in her lounge chair thinking about everything.

It was obvious that Zan had seen something that had upset him and Liz assumed it was something to do with Max. She hadn’t meant to give him flashes but when she received them from him she had been distracted and her block had dropped.

The incident proved one thing to Liz though and that was that things couldn’t continue that way any longer. She was due to return to Las Vegas the next day and before she left she needed to have made a decision one way or the other.

She waited for Zan for hours, hoping that they could talk but in the end she fell asleep in her lawn chair.

***

Max knew he shouldn’t have come but he hadn’t been able to stay away. He climbed the ladder carefully and when he reached the top he poked jumped over the edge hesitantly.

He smiled when he saw Liz asleep in her lawn chair. It almost felt like they were 17 again when he would sneak up to see her during the night. He approached her slowly when he realised she was asleep and just stood staring at her for what felt like eternity. When he saw her shiver though he frowned.

Max glimpsed towards her bedroom then. The window was open and the lights on. He knew he probably shouldn’t but he didn’t want to wake Liz up so he scooped her into his arms and headed towards the window. It was awkward but somehow he managed to get Liz into the room without her waking up, so he placed her in her bed and raised the sheets around her.

He knelt on the floor next to her simply staring at her for ten minutes. It had been so long since he had seen her and he wanted to drink her in.

After a few minutes he stood up, it was wrong to be in her room without her permission. He was heading back towards the window when something caught his attention.

It was a plane ticket.

Unable to stop himself he picked it up.

Flight LV406 was departing the next day at 2pm.

Max felt his heart sink. Obviously Liz had made her decision and she was choosing Zan and Las Vegas.

Placing the ticket back down, and one long last look at Liz, Max crawled back out the window with a solemn promise to himself that he would let Liz go if that’s what made her happy.

***

Liz was confused when she woke up the next morning and found herself in her bed, with her clothes from the day before on.

She wondered how she got there and then she remembered that Zan hadn’t come home the night before.

Jumping out of bed and made her way out of her room and was heading to the spare room when her dad called out to her.

“Hi honey.”

“Morning Daddy,” she replied.

“We just sat down for breakfast why don’t you join us?” He said.

“Um ok,” she nodded and followed him into the kitchen.

Her eyes met Zan’s as she entered.

“Morning,” she greeted him.

“Morning,” he replied.

Nancy kissed her daughter as she passed her and Liz smiled up at her.

“Thanks for putting me in bed last night,” Liz said quietly so her parents couldn’t hear her.

Zan looked at her confused. “Um you’re welcome but I didn’t do it. You were already in bed when I got home.”

“Oh,” Liz frowned. “Max,” she whispered then.

“What honey?” Her mum asked as she sat down next to her.

“Oh nothing,” Liz shook her head her eyes glancing at Zan who was staring at her with an expression she couldn’t quite read.

“So Liz are you still leaving today?” Jeff asked his daughter.

Liz stopped mid bite, “Um.”

“Yeah our flights at 2,” Zan answered for her.

When Liz looked up Zan was avoiding her gaze.

After breakfast Liz led Zan into her room.

“You took off last night pretty quickly, are you ok?” Liz asked.

“I’m fine I just needed some time to myself,” Zan replied.

“Ok, do you want to talk about it?” Liz frowned.

“No not really,” Zan smiled reaching for her hand and pulling her to him.

“Ok,” she said.

“You should really get packing,” he said then. “We need to leave for the airport soon.”

Upon hearing Zan’s words Liz pulled back slightly.

Zan took the opportunity to jump up and move to the corner of the room where her suitcase was, and he picked it up and placed it on the bed for her with a smile.

“As much as it’s been nice meeting your parents,” he said. “I can’t wait to get home, I really miss the bright lights of Vegas,” he smiled.

“Um yeah,” Liz nodded slowly before taking a deep breath.

It was now or never.

Part 17

He knew he was punishing himself but he just couldn’t seem to stop himself. He drove past the Crashdown slowly before pulling the jeep into a park.

He felt his heart speed up as she walked out the front doors of the Crashdown. Her hair was long and flowing and he ached to reach out and touch it one last time before she disappeared from his life forever.

He could see that Zan was in the car already and he watched as Liz kissed her father goodbye, then Maria and hopped into the passenger side. For a brief moment he wondered why the others weren’t there to see her off but then he pushed the thoughts aside assuming she saw them earlier.

Max waited until they pulled away from the kerb, chucking a u-turn and heading off in the opposite direction.

When he couldn’t see the taillights of the silver rental car any longer he finally put his car into gear and headed home.

Once he reached his house he sunk onto the loan couch in his living room and allowed a few tears to fall. Although he had tried to tell himself not to get his hopes up when Liz had given him the unfiled divorce papers, in the end he had. He had hoped with everything he had that she would choose him and it hurt like hell that she hadn’t. To make it worse she hadn’t even come to see him to tell him to his face.

He stood up and walked to the draw where he had placed the divorce papers and pulled them out. He knew he would have to give them to his father now to take care of, and when they were filed he would send Liz a note telling her he had taken care of it. They would be no longer married and she would be free to move on with Zan.

He threw them on the coffee table then and headed up stairs to finish packing up his bedroom. He was due to move into his new apartment in a couple of days and right now he needed to take his mind off Liz. If he didn’t he would go insane, and although that thought didn’t worry him so much he knew he couldn’t put his family through it again. It just wasn’t fair. He had to start making an effort to live, he might not ever move on and marry and have children, but he knew he wanted to be there for Isabel.

He had left the bedroom to the last moment because it was the most painful room to pack up. This was the room that he and Liz had made love and slept in each other’s arms every night.

He started with his clothes and once that was done he started to remove the pictures of him and Liz off the dressing table. He remembered when every one of the photos was taken. He wrapped them in newspaper before placing them in the box, promising himself that he wouldn’t put so many up in his new apartment. Looking at them day after day was too painful.

Max had almost finished two hours later when there was knock at the door. Assuming it was most likely Isabel coming to check up on him he took his time walking down the stairs.

He was only half way down the stairs when they knocked again.

“All right Iz, I’m coming,” he called out and moved quicker down the remaining stairs.
He threw the door open, his mouth open to greet his sister when he stopped. It wasn’t Isabel on the other side.

Max was shocked; he stood there with his moth open not able to speak.

Wondering the streets, in a world underneath it all
Nothing seems to be, nothing tastes as sweet
As what I can't have
Like you and the way that you're twisting your hair
round your finger
Tonight I'm not afraid to tell you
What I feel about you.

“Max,” she whispered.

“Liz?” he questioned.

“I was starting to think you weren’t home,” she said looking down unsurely.

“What are you doing here?” He asked.

Liz looked down at her feet, and the suitcases surrounding them.

“I thought you left already,” he said.

Liz looked up shocked. “I saw the ticket last night,” he answered her unspoken question.

Liz smiled. “It was you,” she whispered referring to waking up in her bed having no idea how she got there.

Max nodded.

“I thought you’d be on the plane by now,” he said.

“I’m supposed to be,” Liz replied.

“Then why aren’t you?” He asked.

“Remember the other day you asked me a question? You asked me was I happy?” Liz asked.

Max nodded.

I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
and cannon ball into the water
I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
For you I will
For you I will

“Well the truth is I’d be happiest with you,” she confessed tears coming to her eyes.

She knew she had taken a chance showing up on his door, her heart on her sleeve and her bags at her feet, but she knew it was time to put her heart on the line.

Max’s throat was suddenly dry. “What?” He croaked.

“I’d be happiest with you,” Liz repeated.

Forgive me if I stutter
From all of the clutter in my head
Cuz I could fall asleep in those eyes
Like a water bed
Do I seem familiar, i've crossed you in hallways
a thousand times, no more camouflage
I want to be exposed, and not be afraid to fall.

“I heard you the first time I’m just not quite sure I understand,” he whispered, his eyes drifting to her bags.

“Could we maybe talk about it inside?” Liz asked feeling awkward.

“Sure,” Max said and reached down and picked up her bags and brought them inside.

Inside he wanted to jump for joy but he had to know what it meant first.

The first thing Liz noticed was that the house was even barer than the last time she was here.

“So…” Max said.

Nervously Liz tucked a piece of stray hair behind her ear. “So…” She smiled.

“What happened, you had a ticket so…”

“I purchased that ticket when I booked my flight here,” she explained.

“Oh,” Max said. “I saw you leaving this morning.”

Liz smiled then, “You came to see me off?

Max blushed bright red. “I was just passing,” he tried to play off.

I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
And cannon ball into the water
I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
For you I will
You always want what you can't have
But I've got to try
I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
For you I will
For you I will
For you I will
For you

Liz didn’t believe him though and took a step closer. “So you’re not leaving?” Max asked hopefully.

“Not unless you want me to,” she told him.

Max collapsed into the lounge in shock. He couldn’t believe what was happening and he closed his eyes for a few moments before opening them again, sure that Liz would be gone when he re-opened them.

Liz stood watching the emotions cross his face, her gaze wandered for a second and she walked to the coffee table to pick up the papers there. It was their unfiled divorce papers.

“Of course I don’t want you too.”

Liz looked up startled when Max spoke.

“Really?” She asked hopefully.

“God Liz,” Max whispered. “I have no idea what I did to ever deserve you, after everything I did to you I can’t believe you’re willing to forgive me…”

If I could dim the lights in the mall
and create a mood I would
Shout out your name so it echoes in every room
I would

That's what I'd do, That's what I'd do to get through to you

“Max,” Liz started as she moved to sit next to him on the lounge, the divorce papers in her hands. “I’m not a fool, I realise that we can’t just go back to the way things were, and in fact it’s the last thing I want.”

Max nodded that he understood.

“Now that I know the truth I think the things that hurts the most is that you lied to me,” she admitted.

Max opened his mouth to speak but Liz placed a finger against his lips to silence him.

“Let me finish?” She requested. “You should have told me the truth after it happened, hell you should have told me what was going on as soon as you started feeling an attraction towards Tess.”

“I know,” Max nodded his head down in shame.

“If we’re going to do this again you have to promise me something?”

“Anything,” Max whispered.

I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
And cannon ball into the water
I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
For you I will
You always want what you can't have
But I've got to try
I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have
For you I will
For you I will
For you I will
For you I will

“Never lie to me again Max Evans,” Liz said tears in her eyes. “I don’t care what it is, alien, human or even if you don’t love me anymore I want you to tell me to my face.”

Unable to keep his hands to himself any longer Max reached forward and cupped her face in his hands. “I promise,” he nodded, tears in his own eyes now. He honestly could not believe that this was happening, that Liz was really in his lounge room, sitting on his lounge telling him that she was willing to give him a second chance.

“Don’t break my heart again,” Liz begged the tears flowing freely now. “I couldn’t survive it,” she confessed.

Max’s voice hitched in his throat. “I swear to God I’ll do everything in my power to make you so happy, you’re my world Liz and I know I couldn’t survive loosing you again…”

Liz smiled through her tears at his words and then waited with bated breath as Max slowly closed the distance between them. Their tears mixed with the kiss, and when they pulled back Max rested his forehead against Liz’s.

“I can’t believe your here,” he breathed out. “I thought for sure I’d lost you forever.”

Liz shook her head, “You haven’t.”

Pulling back then Liz picked up the divorce papers on her laps and before Max could react she had torn them in two.

Max sat with his mouth agape. “Liz are you sure?”

Liz smiled at Max’s shocked face, “It’s too late now Mr Evans. You’re stuck with me.”

Max pulled her back against him and kissed her passionately conveying everything he felt.

“I love you,” Max told her when they pulled back.

“I know,” Liz whispered.

Part 18

After their emotional reunion Max and Liz sat in silence in Max’s empty living room for a few minutes wrapped in each other’s arms, neither one wanting to let go of the other.

They both had a million thoughts running through their heads. Liz was thinking about her parents and friend’s reactions, and also of Zan who would be sitting alone on the plane back to Vegas.

Max was thinking about how lucky he was that Liz had chose him, but he also wondered what had happened.

Pushing Liz’s hair back Max couldn’t not ask any longer, “Liz?”

“Yeah” she said looking up.

“What happened?”

Liz took a deep breath before she started to replay the events that had led her to Max’s door.

”Zan I think we should talk” Liz said.

Zan stopped what he was doing and looked up at Liz.

“What about?” he asked the worry etched on his face.

Liz took a deep breath and sunk onto the bed. There would be no easy way to do this, it would break her heart, but the alternative was just as bad. Liz realised now that she couldn’t go back to Vegas and pretend that she hadn’t left her heart in Roswell. As much as she had grown to love Zan it would never compare to the love she felt for Max.

Somewhere along the way she had made her choice, she had chosen Max the moment she came to Roswell and now she would have to tell Zan.

“I can’t go back to Vegas with you” Liz whispered.

Zan swallowed, “Why not?”

Liz smiled sadly at him, “because I belong here in Roswell, I always have”

“But we have a life in Las Vegas” Zan pointed out. “We both have apartments and jobs”

Liz looked down at her lap; obviously Zan wasn’t going to make this easy for her.

“I belong here in Roswell Zan, you should go home to Vegas,” she whispered.

She looked up when she heard Zan exhale a breath that he had obviously been holding and watched him sink to the ground, his head falling into his hands.

“You’re choosing him?” he asked.

Liz nodded slowly, tears filled her eyes then. She could see how much she was hurting him. “I’m sorry, but it always be him” she whispered.

She watched then as Zan rose to his feet and nodded at her. “I should finish packing; you’ll still give me a lift to airport won’t you?”

“Of course” Liz nodded.

She watched as Zan left the room then and when he was gone she allowed her tears to fall. It would be hard giving Zan up, he had become her best friend and lover in the time she had been in Las Vegas. He had healed her scars and brought her dying heart back to life. In reality she had so much to thank Zan for but she knew words would never express it.

Following Zan’s lead she also began to pack and when she was finished she made her way towards the spare room. The door was shut and she knocked softly.

“Come in” she heard his husky voice.

“Hi” she whispered.

When Zan looked up she could see the tell tale sighs of his tears and her own tears started to fall again.

“Is it time to go?” he asked.

Liz nodded. “Well let’s go and say goodbye” he said picking up his bag and walking past Liz.

“Zan?”

Zan stopped and turned to face her. “Could you not say anything to my parents just yet?” she requested.

Zan smiled sadly at her, “if that’s what you want”

“It is” Liz nodded.

“Are your bags in your room?” he asked her then. Obviously if she planned on not telling her parents then she couldn’t walk out the door without her bags.

“Yeah” she nodded.

Zan placed his own bag down then and walked towards Liz’s room to retrieve them. A few minutes later her father appeared to help him with the bags.

“It was great meeting you Zan; you look after my little girl ok?” Jeff requested as he shook Zan’s hand.

Feeling guilty Zan nodded. Nancy stepped forward and hugged him then also and Zan felt tears gather in his eyes again as he truly understood that he wasn’t just loosing Liz at this very second, he was also loosing a family.

“Bye Zan” Maria smiled and waved.

Zan hopped in the car as Liz said goodbye to her parents and then walked over to Maria.

“What’s going on?” Maria whispered.

“I’ll see you in a few hours” Liz smiled at her.

“Oh Liz” Maria smiled.

Liz walked around to the driver’s side of the car then and hopped in beside Zan. A few second later they were on their way to the airport.

***

Liz sat patiently as Zan walked back from the checkout desk.

“Did they let you change the ticket over?” she asked hopefully. Since she had a ticket and Zan didn’t Liz had offered him her ticket, it made no sense to waste it.

Zan nodded, “yep, I just have to check my bags in and I’m right” he answered.

Liz stood up then, “so I guess this is it” she said sadly.

Zan nodded.

“I’ll have to come back to Vegas to pack everything up in the next few weeks, I’ll give notice over the phone” she said trying to make conversation.

Once again Zan nodded.

“Zan” Liz whispered. “I hate that I’m hurting you so much” she cried.

The anguish in her voice was all it took to snap Zan out of his silence, “I’m sorry but this is really hard” he admitted.

“I know” she agreed. “Although you might not believe me this is extremely hard for me too. I do love you”

“Just not enough” Zan whispered.

Liz hated the defeated tone to Zan’s voice, “you will never know how truly special you are to me” she whispered causing Zan to look up and meet her eyes, “you might have a special power to heal people but what you don’t realise is that without that you healed me”

“Liz…” Zan choked out.

“No let me finish” she demanded, “when you found me I was lost, hurt and angry with the world and somehow you healed the scars and helped me realise that there was this whole world out there for me. I will never regret a second of the time I spent with you Zan York because you truly changed my life.”

“Would you be angry with me if I told you I did regret some things?” Zan asked.

Liz looked shocked and a little hurt thinking he regretted being with her. “I regret telling you the truth” he admitted, “because if I hadn’t told you I wouldn’t be saying goodbye to you right now”

“Oh Zan” Liz cried, “somehow I think it was always going to end with goodbye” she said regretfully, “the day an alien king healed me and changed my life forever, claiming my heart, was the day my fate was sealed. Things got way of course for a while but somehow I think I always knew this was where I belonged”

Zan nodded sadly, “somehow I think I knew that two” he admitted. In his heart he knew that Liz had never truly been his and even though he had fought it with everything he had in the end it wouldn’t matter.

Liz Evans had given herself to Max Evans a long time ago and no one would ever be able to compete with him for Liz’ heart.

Liz stepped forward and hugged him then. “Destiny will always have its way, Liz, just remember that” he whispered in her ear. It wasn’t meant to upset her it the simple truth that Zan believed in his heart, and a warning for Liz.

Cupping his face in her hands Liz gave Zan one last agonizing kiss goodbye.

“I think from now on we make our own destinies” she replied.

“I hope so Liz” he whispered, “and just in case destiny leads you back to me, I’ll be in Vegas”

Liz smiled; although she knew that she would most likely never cross paths with Zan again she was happy that they would end on at least good terms.

“Will you go to him now?” Zan wondered.

Liz nodded, “if he’ll have me”

Zan laughed a little, “of course he’ll have you, he loves you”

Liz shook her head, “he does, but he doesn’t believe he deserves me, or that I could forgive him.”

“Well I guess you’ll just have to convince him” Zan said. After meeting Max the night before and talking to him Zan knew for certain that Max loved Liz as much as she loved him.

Zan picked up his bags then and offered Liz one last small sad smile.

“Be happy Liz” he whispered.

“You too” Liz said.

Liz watched as Zan walked towards the check out desk and disappeared into the terminal never once looking back in her direction, and once he was gone she sat back down on the seats and pulled a tissue out of her purse to dry her eyes.

After a few minutes she stood back up determinedly, it was time to get her life back, it was time to get her husband back.

“And so here I am” she whispered.

Max sat quietly his eyes focused sole on Liz full of all the love he felt inside for her.

“Are you going to say something?” Liz finally asked.

“I’m just lost for words” Max whispered, “I still can’t believe you picked me”

Liz smiled at his comment. Being in his arms again was the first time she had felt so content in a very long time. Their connection was humming along in the back of their minds and Liz could feel everything Max was feeling inside of her. It was the most comforting and mind-blowing feeling.

“Wait here” Max whispered then before pushing up off the lounge and heading towards the stairs.

Liz watched curiously as he went and when he returned a few minutes later was happy to see the beautiful smile that lit up his face. This was the Max she remembered and loved.

Instead of returning to his seat beside her Max knelt in front of her and opened his hand. Liz gasped as her engagement and wedding rings shone brightly at her.

“OH my god” she whispered reaching out to tentatively touch them.

She noticed then for the first time that Max still wore his white gold wedding band on his finger, the tan mark an obvious sign that it had remained during their time apart.

“Max…” she whispered.

“D-Do you maybe want to wear them again?” Max asked hesitantly.

“I do” Liz whispered, she had missed her beloved rings and tears came to her eyes as Max slid them back on her fingers. He made a promise to himself then that he would do something special for Liz to make up for everything, in time he would be the man that she deserved, or he would die trying.

Once they were back on her fingers Max kissed them reverently before kissing a crying Liz.

When they broke apart Liz giggled a little.

“What?” Max asked.

“Where the hell are we going to live?” she asked.

I'll be back through the week!

Epilogue

There were tough times and easy time ahead for Max and Liz.

The first hurdle Liz had to cross was telling her parents. Liz knew it would be hard since he couldn’t explain the details of the programming to them since they didn’t know that Max an alien. Obviously her parents had been surprised and a little worried. Her father concerned that Max didn’t deserve his little girl, and still untrusting, and Nancy Parker was furious. It took months for Liz to be able to sit down with her mother to talk about it, for Nancy to truly understand that Liz was never going to simply fall out of love with Max and move on to someone else, but slowly and surely Nancy learned to trust her daughter.

In the end Michael, Isabel and Tess gave Liz and Max their blessing to tell her parents the truth. They had taken the news considerably well and Liz regretted waiting so long to tell them. The news brought her and her mother closer than they ever had been before. Nancy now had a true understanding of the sacrifices both Max and Liz had made to be together and she would be eternally grateful to Max, the boy who put his life on the line to save her only daughter.

Dianne and Phillip Evans understandably had been thrilled at the news and did everything they could to support Max and Liz, including being present when Liz told her parents the truth.

***

Another hard moment for Liz was returning to Vegas and packing up her life there. Max took some time off work to accompany her and piece-by-piece together they packed up Liz’s apartment and collected her belongings from work. Max knew it was hard for Liz. She had built a good life for herself, with a good job and nice friends in Vegas. He offered to move there for her but Liz had immediately refused. Roswell was where their family and friends were and as far as she was concerned that was where they also belonged.

It was especially hard when they ran into Zan one day. He looked depressed and lonely but assured Liz it would pass and that he just needed to time to come to terms with what had happened. He then confided in her that he was considering moving on from Vegas after all. It didn’t hold the same appeal anymore and he thought heading to LA might be more his thing. He promised to keep in touch eventually and Liz had eagerly settled for that.

Of course their friends had been overjoyed by the news. It was also the first step to healing the rifts between them. It had been so long since Max, Maria, and Alex had been friends and Liz was eager to bring them altogether again.

They started off small with a BBQ at Alex and Isabel’s. Max was nervous as hell, he had avoided any type of social outing during Liz’s absence, and it was difficult to readjust.

“You’ll be fine,” Liz assured him as they waited at the front door of Alex and Isabel’s.

When Alex answered the door he had pulled Liz into a warm inviting hug before turning to Max.

“Hi Alex,” Max greeted.

Alex just stared for a few seconds before the corners of his mouth lifted, “Hey Max,” he greeted and held out his hand.

Liz had almost cried as they shook hands, she knew that Maria would be a lot harder to win over though.

In the end though Maria had surprised her the most. She had gone for the simple approach.

“Max,” she said. “I swear to god if you hurt her again I’ll kill you,” she said.

Max had simply nodded, “And I’ll happily supply the tools,” he told her.

Maria had smiled at Max then before reaching up and giving him a hug. “You haven’t returned to girlfriend status yet but if you make her happy then you will soon enough.”

“Thanks Maria,” Max smiled.

Of course Max’s first interaction with Kyle hadn’t gone so well. Over the past two years Kyle’s dislike of Max had festered to out right hate. Max was the guy who as far as Kyle was concerned had always taken everything he had ever wanted. It started with Liz, then when Tess first arrived in town all she was interested in was Max as well. Add to the fact that Kyle’s own father at a time was more interested in Max then Kyle, it didn’t help matters.

So even though Kyle knew the truth, that Max and Tess had not wanted to betray them but in some ways had been forced to by the programming, it didn’t change the way Kyle felt.

Liz understood that, she still hated seeing Tess but did so for her friends. Max and Tess went out of their way to stay away from each other for the sake of their partners and Liz appreciated that. Liz knew that her and Tess would never be good friends again but it helped Liz that she knew she could trust Max, and Tess.

“He hates me,” Max declared as Kyle had ignored his greeting.

“He doesn’t hate you,” Liz try to pacify him but Max shot her a ‘yeah sure, you don’t believe that any more than me’ look.

“Ok so maybe he does,” Liz sighed.

“It’s not like it was all my fault,” Max mumbled and Liz chuckled at him because he sounded like a little child as he said it.

“Its not like you were the best of friends to begin with,” Liz pointed out.

“Yeah that’s true.”

In the end Max realised that he wasn’t going to mend fences with Kyle over night. It was something that he would have to continue to work at over time. Something that Liz knew would be the same with her and Tess. Just like Max and Kyle, Liz and Tess were never destined to be best friends but because of the ties that bind Max and Tess together they would always be family.

On top of everything going on in their life Max and Liz’s house actually sold.

Liz had been devastated when Max had broken the news. After they had gotten back together they had decided to move into the apartment that Max had rented rather than to move Max’s stuff back into the house.

Although they shared many very happy memories in the house there were also some extremely painful ones and Liz didn’t think she was ready to shower in their ensuite again.

But regardless of that Liz had cried her eyes out when the house had actually sold. Max had offered to refuse the offer but after she had calmed down Liz refused to let him. The offer was generous considering the house wasn’t in the best shape.

“I refuse to sell it if you’re this upset over it,” Max had argued.

“I appreciate that,” Liz smiled sadly at him, “but maybe this is a sign,” she had told him.

“How so?”

“Well the house sold pretty quickly and I think that was a sign that we weren’t supposed to start this next part of our journey there,” she explained.

“So you don’t want to move back into the house?” Max has asked.

“I love that house,” she smiled, “I remember picking it out with you and putting the down payment on it.”

Max smiled at the memory too. They had both been so proud that they could afford it.

“But no I don’t think I could be happy living in there after everything that has happened,” she confessed.

Max smiled and kissed her forehead. “I understand,” he said. “I’ll ring the real estate and tell them to accept the offer,” he told her. “Maybe after it settles we could start looking for our new home?” He suggested.

“I like the sound of that,” Liz smiled. “But first I better get a job,” she laughed.

“You don’t have to you know,” he told her. Max made more than enough money to support Liz if she chose to stay at home for a while. “You always talked about writing while in college, you could stay at home and give that a go,” he suggested.

“Max I’m a scientist,” she argued weakly but unable to deny that the idea appealed to her.

“You took some creative writing courses in college,” he reminded her.

Liz bit her lip, “I’ll think about it,” she said.

Max smiled at her; he loved the way she tugged on her bottom lip. “Whatever makes you happy Liz that’s all I want.”

“I know, thank you.”

They officially handed the keys over to the house ten weeks later, once again Liz shed a tear but this time it was a happy one.

They stayed in the apartment for six months; it reminded Liz of when they lived in an apartment whilst in college in Chicago. There was no escaping each other when you got angry or annoyed and it was good for Max and Liz during that time when they were getting to know each other again and healing the wounds in their relationship.

Eventually though they found the perfect house. Coincidentally it ended up being on the same street that Alex and Isabel lived in. It was a four-bedroom two-story house, it had only recently been built, but they got it for a nice price since the owner needed to sell quickly. Liz fell in love with it instantly, and Max loved the landscaped, low maintenance yard.

“Do you think it’s too big?” Liz asked worried.

“Not at all,” Max smiled. It wasn’t much bigger than their first house, it just looked like a castle compared to the small apartment they had been living in for six months.

“It’s four bedrooms,” Liz pointed out.

Max walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around waist.

“Well maybe one day we can fill them,” he whispered.

Liz’s face broke out in a beautiful smile then and she looked at Max over her shoulder. “I like the sound of that,” she told him.

They moved in all their furniture and even had fun picking out a few new pieces.

They set up one of the rooms as an office for Liz. A few months earlier she had decided to take up Max’s suggestion and she sat down to write. What came out was completely different to anything she expected and a few months later she had the beginning of a novel about an alien king who fell in love with a small town girl. Obviously there was a lot of fiction but in essence the book would be based on hers and Max’s love story.

***

Getting back on track in their relationship didn’t turn out to be so difficult for them in the end. A few months after Liz showed up at Max’s doors with her bags, they made love again in Max’s small apartment.

They had both waited as long as they could before taking the next step. During the months there had been many make out sessions which had left both of them wanting but when the time came it was perfect and reminiscent of their very first time all those years ago.

It was slow and passionate and left both Max and Liz aching for more. After that night the two spent a lot of time alone getting reacquainted with each other.

Sometimes Liz felt guilty that she had shared herself with Zan in the same way, but Max would always assure her that he understood. He knew that Liz had loved Zan, it hurt sometimes, but he understood it and accepted it because in the end Liz had chose him because she loved him more. Liz knew that Max was also still plagued with guilt over sleeping with Tess and that he would never hold Zan against her.

Liz was sometimes surprised at how perfect everything was turning out to be. She knew that the reason for it was simple. Max was doing everything he could to keep his promises. They talked about everything; they shared everything, verbally and through their connection. But most of all he was making her happier than she ever remembered being.

And when Liz thought that she couldn’t be any happier, and that Max surely couldn’t become an even more amazing husband, he did something to rock her world.

Liz was surprised when she came home and found the house dark. She switched the light on as she placed down her bag and keys. She had decided to apply for a part time job at the hospital. She enjoyed writing but found she couldn’t do it every day.

“Max honey are you home?” She called up the stairs.

No answer came form upstairs but instead the light in the living room turned on bathing the room in gentle light and making Liz gasp.

The room was filled with dozens of vases of roses and standing in the middle with a single white rose in his hand, was Max.

“Max…” she whispered. “ What’s going on?”

“Liz,” Max said reverently as he stepped forward until he was in front of her and could take her hand. He led her into the middle of the room and handed her the rose.

“I love you,” he told her.

Liz smiled. “I know, I love you too Max,” she replied.

Smiling at her reply Max cupped her face gently before he leaned in and kissed her. The kiss was slow and enticing and when Max pulled back Liz stood there with her eyes closed praying that there would be a lot more of those to come very soon.

“Liz?” Max whispered again.

Liz opened her eyes slowly but when she did Max was no longer standing in front of her.

“What!” She said confused and then she looked down when she felt him take her hand again.

Liz’s eyes went wide when she realised Max was on bended knee in front of her.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“Elizabeth Claudia Evans will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?” Max asked with a grin.

“I already married you remember,” Liz grinned.

“I know,” Max replied. “But would you marry me again?” He asked with puppy dog eyes that he knew Liz could never refuse.

Liz’s eyes lit up with delight, “You want to get married again?”

“Yes,” Max nodded, “I want to stand before our family and friends and declare my love and commitment to you forever, all over again.”

“Oh Max,” Liz whispered.

He pulled out a black box then and popped the lid to produce a beautiful ring. “I already have a ring,” Liz told him.

Max smiled as he saw that Liz couldn’t take the eyes off the ring in the box. It was certainly a lot more upmarket than the ring he bought her all those years ago.

“Now you have another,” he told her pulling it out of the box and placing it on top of her ring finger.

“Of course I will,” Liz told him.

Max slid the ring on her finger then before raising to his feet and pulling her against him, fusing their mouths together.

Six Months Later

Today was the day that Max and Liz were reaffirming their vows. It had been exactly one year since they had gotten back together. At first they had wanted to get married again on their first wedding anniversary but in the end they decided to create a new anniversary.

“Are you ready Chica?” Maria asked Liz as she helped fluff her beautiful gown.

“Yes,” Liz said happily.

“Look at you, you’re not even nervous,” Maria laughed.

“What’s to be nervous about, we’re all ready married Maria,” Liz chuckled.

“True,” Maria agreed. “So let’s get you married again.”

Jeff Parker happily escorted his daughter down the aisle to where Max was waiting for her with Michael by his side. Liz smiled as she passed her mother and Dianne who were both crying, and a very pregnant Isabel who was grinning from ear to ear.

Max was smiling brightly at her and Liz’s smile was just as big. Their smiles remained at they recited their vows in front of their familles and friends. Promising that they would love, cherish and honour each other for all the days of their lives again.

“I love you,” Max mouthed.

“I love you too,” Liz mouthed back as the ceremony ended.

Afterwards they all had dinner at Chez Pierre where Maria arranged to get up and sing to them.

“Hi everyone,” she said nervously. “It’s been a long time since I got up and sang in front of people,” she admitted. “But when Max asked me to do this for Liz there was no way I could say no. Liz has been my best friend for as long as I can remember, she’s my rock,” she said tearily. “So this, Liz, is for you” she smiled.

Find Me Here
Speak To Me
I want to feel you
I need to hear you
You are the light
That's leading me
To the place where I find peace again.

Liz felt tears spring to her eyes as she heard the beautiful lyrics coming from her best friend’s voice. She blinked when the hand appeared in front of her not knowing that Max had stood up.

“Dance with me Mrs Evans?” He grinned.

“Of course,” she agreed.

You are the strength, that keeps me walking.
You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.
You are the light to my soul.
You are my purpose...you're everything.

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

Their family and friends watched as the two danced in their own little world.

You calm the storms, and you give me rest.
You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall.
You steal my heart, and you take my breath away.
Would you take me in? Take me deeper now?

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?
And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

“Are you ok?” Max asked as he saw the tears in Liz’s eyes.

“Yeah I’m just really happy,” she told him with a bright smile. “Thank you for this,” she said then.

“I should be the one thanking you,” Max said then.

Cause you're all I want, you’re all I need
you’re everything, everything
you’re all I want your all I need
you’re everything, everything.
You're all I want you're all I need.
You're everything, everything
you’re all I want you're all I need, you're everything, everything.

And how can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?
How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?

Would you tell me how could it be any better than this? [/i]

“What for?” Liz asked.

“For everything, for forgiving me, for never giving up on us,” he said kissing the tip of her nose.

“But most of all for believing that we make our own destiny,” he whispered.

“I did all that?” Liz joked.

“Yeah.”

“So tell me then Mr Evans, what’s our destiny?” She asked him with a smile.

“I only know the part I’m hoping for,” Max grinned back.
