Definately true. I'm Katherine, of course, which can be spelt any number of ways. But it is NOT true in Canon Roswell, where Isabel is spelt ISABEL and Michael is spelt MICHAEL. All names do have different spellings I know this because I'm Rachael- and almost everyone forgets the second a and goes Rachel for the simple reason its more common and when they do know there is two a's they do muddle it up with Racheal

I don't mean to get snippy about this, but it is one of my pet peeves. Seriously. If I see Isabel spelt Isabelle in a story, I stop reading. That's how much it annoys me. But that's just me.
