Part 10

I sat on my bed, idly flipping through a magazine as the phone rang. After the 5th ring, I grunted in frustration and picked the phone off the hook, paused just long enough to hear the shrill voice on the other end, and then slammed it back down again. I sat in silence for about 10 minutes, until the phone started to ring again. This time I let it go to my answering machine.

“Hey, it’s Liz. I’m not here right now, so leave a message after the beep!”

“Liz! Pick up this phone right now!” Maria screeched. Then in a softer voice she said, “I’m really, really sorry, Lizzie. I just thought that maybe you needed a confidence booster! And I knew you’d never go out like that on your own, so I had to—”

I yanked the phone off the hook and held it to my ear. “A confidence booster? A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER?! You had no right Maria! I didn’t want to go out looking like that!!! It was MY CHOICE! You pretended to be late, knowing I’d help you, and forced me to go out in public with that little get-up—!”

“I’m sorry!” Maria said, sounding very upset. “But it worked didn’t it? You got to talk to Max didn’t you?” she asked, suddenly sounding smug.

“Only because I looked the way I did! Notice he wasn’t leaping to my side when I looked normal!” I shouted, though I didn’t fully believe it. I still remembered what he had started to say before Kyle had interrupted us.

‘But you don’t need—’

What would he have said if Kyle hadn't come? That I didn't need the clothes and make-up to look nice?

Maria huffed in frustration at the other end of the line, bringing me back to earth. “Why are you always so down on yourself? Why can’t you see what everyone else sees?”

I stayed silent, trying to think of a good comeback. When I couldn’t, I just said, “I have to go Maria. Talk to you later, ok?” I said, and then hung up without waiting for an answer.

*******

I walked nervously to my locker, not sure what to say to Maria. I didn’t know if we were friends again or not, but I figured I’d just let her take the lead. If she was nice, fine; if she wasn’t, who needs her anyway?

“Hey,” she said as I walked up. “You’ve got something on your locker.” she said, grinning. I looked over and was surprised to see a single, white rose.

“Who—?” I started to ask.

“No idea,” she interrupted. “It was there when I got here. I’m guessing that you have something inside there too.” she said, indicating to my locker.

I grabbed the rose and held it up to my nose, smelling it's sweet scent. Then I put the combination in for my locker, feeling slightly nervous, and opened it, not totally surprised to see a small piece of paper fall from it and flitter to the ground. I bent down to pick it up, Maria huffing impatiently beside me.

“What’s it say?” She asked eagerly, looking over my shoulder as I stood up. I unfolded the paper and read it.

Dear Liz

Hey, I saw you last night. You looked… very different from normal. Beautiful, but you didn’t need all that. You’re absolutely perfect just the way you are. I also noticed all of the guys staring at you; I can’t help but admit that I was a little jealous.

Anyway, hope you’re doing ok!

Signed, Anonymous.

“Awww,” Maria sighed. “he’s so sweet.”

“Yeah,” I admitted, “He really is.”

Maria laughed and sent me a teasing look. “You mean you’re actually admitting that he’s real?”

I glared at her. “I guess… But what if—” I was cut off by a loud voice calling my name.

“Liz! Hey, LIZ!!” A boy called, and I turned to see Alex’s cousin, Collin running toward me. I resisted an eye-roll with much difficulty. Alex and Maria always teased me about Collin being in love with me. Too bad he was a year younger than me, about a foot shorter (and I’m about 5 foot 2 inches at the most) and had braces and glasses.

“Hey Collin.” I said, trying to sound as if I was happy to see him.

“Hi!” He said excitedly. “How are you?”

“Oh...uh good. You?” I asked politely

“I’m great. I’ve been hanging out with Alex a lot. Oh, look, here he comes now!” He said, pointing enthusiastically over my shoulder. I turned and saw Alex’s lanky form walking toward us.

“Hey.” he said when he got there. He didn’t say anything about Collin, but I could see the humor in his eyes.

“Hey yourself, stranger.” I said, delighted to see him. “Haven’t seen you're face since you’ve became Isabel's partner.” I told him, a teasing note in my voice.

“Yeah, it’s coming along good. She’ll be eating out of the palm of my hand in no time.” Alex said, though there was a serious note in his voice. I knew that it went much deeper than that with Isabel. As if to prove the point, Isabel appeared at that very moment, her brother in tow.

“Hey, Alex.” she said, a slight blush on her cheeks.

“Hey,” he said in a mock casual voice. “How have you been?”

And just like that, they were in their own little world. They started to walk to class together, giving us only a vague goodbye.

“So, anyway—” Collin started, turning toward me, but Max interrupted him.

“Hey, Liz.” He said, his smile making my knees weak. Completely forgetting about Alex’s cousin, I turned to him.

“Hey,” I said shyly, smiling at him.

“So, Alex is a friend of yours?” he asked.

“Oh, yeah, practically since birth.” I replied. He opened his mouth to say something, but Collin butted in.

“He’s my cousin.” he said proudly, staring hard at Max. “So you’re my competitor, huh?” He asked. “You don’t look so tough. We shall see who wins the fair lady’s heart!”

At his words I blushed a deep crimson, wanting to bury my head in the sand. I looked over at Max to see how he was taking this, but he looked simply amused.

“I guess we will.” he replied smoothly. Collin sent him a comical looking glare and then stomped off, looking annoyed.

“Oh my gosh.” I muttered, utterly mortified. “Sorry about that he’s… absolutely crazy.”

Max raised his eyebrows in amusement. “He seems to like you.” he noted.

“Like I said, crazy.” I told him, smiling a little.

He looked at me seriously, a strange emotion in his eyes. “No it’s not.” he replied, almost inaudibly.

He wasn't saying what I think he was saying. “Excuse me?” I asked breathlessly.

“Liking you is definitely not crazy.” he told me, smiling one of those bone melting smiles.

“Uh… thanks.” I said shyly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

He winked at me. “No problem. See you 'round, Parker.” he added as the bell rang and he headed off to class.

I slumped against my locker, a dazed expression on my face.

“Wow.” I murmured.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback, it means a lot! Welcome to all my new readers!

This part is kind of short, but it's going to be leading up to the dance, which you guys can expect in the part 12. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Part 11

“Can you believe it’s tonight Lizzie?” Maria asked happily over the phone. “This is going to be great!”

“Yeah, wonderful.” I mumbled, holding the phone between my shoulder and ear as I emptied the laundry basket into the washing machine.

“Oh come on, you know it’s going to be fun!” She said excitedly. “And if you get someone bad, it’s only one date.” she added.

My stomach tightened. “That’s reassuring Maria. God, I don’t know why I’m letting you talk me into this!” I exclaimed, shutting the lid to the washing machine and then pulling myself up to sit on it. The thing I'd been dreading was here; today was Saturday, February 14th, and tonight Maria and I would be attending that stupid Valentine's day blind date dance.

“Lizzie, this is a good opportunity,” she said wisely, pulling me out of my reverie, “and I’m not letting you back out of it now! What if you meet the man of your dreams?” she asked.

I rolled my eyes. “I highly doubt that Maria. You and I both know I’ll be stuck with some loser because that’s just how my life works.”

“Well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get someone like Max!” Maria replied.

My heart fluttered at the thought, but I didn’t dare believe it was possible that Max would be my date for the night. “I don’t have luck, Maria. I’m luckless.” I sighed. “Look, I have to go, my shift is starting in a second.” I told her, hanging up the phone. I walked out into the locker room and grabbed my uniform, pulling my shirt over my head as I went.

My shorts were half way down my legs when I heard, “Go in there!!” from behind the swinging door. Then I heard a shuffling sound, a grunt, and Max Evans half stumbled into the room.

I shrieked as he looked over at my scantily clad body. “Shit, sorry!” he said quickly, turning around as a faint blush crept up his face.

I stood in horrified disbelief for about 3 seconds, and then burst into action. I threw on my uniform and quickly did the snaps, my fingers shaking. I knew that my face was three shades of red, so I took a few deep breaths and tried to calm my beating heart. I felt like screaming again, but I controlled the impulse.

“Was there—” My voice sounded hoarse, so I cleared my throat. “Was there something you wanted?” I asked slowly. He turned his head slightly, checking to see if I was fully dressed, and then faced me.

“Uh… sorry,” he said again, ducking his head and scratching his ear. “Michael wanted me to come back here and talk to you, and I told him I wouldn’t, so he kind of pushed me through the door…” he started to explain, and then drifted off. The look on his face was strange… it was like his eyes had become darker.

“It’s… ok,” I said, losing all thought process as I looked into his eyes. He started to walk towards me; I unconsciously gulped.

“So… Michael wants to know about Maria?” I asked, turning around to grab a random item off the storage shelf. I didn’t really need anything, but I needed a reason to stop looking at Max.

“What?" he asked softly. I jumped; he was right behind me.

I turned to look at him, gasping at how close we were. “Max-” I started, but I was cut off when he crushed his lips on mine.

I stood in complete and utter shock as his hands reached up to cup my face. Then my heart took over, and I threw my hands around his neck, pulling him closer. The kiss was intense and hot, just like I had always dreamed it would be. Kissing Max Evans was magic.

All of a sudden he jerked away from me, letting go of my waist and staggering backwards. “I’m… I’m sorry,” he whispered, running his fingers through his hair.

“Sorry?” I asked, praying he wasn’t going to think the kiss was a mistake. “Max…”

“We—I… just... attacked you…I’m... sorry,” He stuttered, starting to turn for the door.

“Max, wait,” I cried, suddenly desperate. The thought of him walking out the door was too much for me to handle. I ran forward and grabbed his arm. “Was… was it a mistake?” I asked, silently begging for him to say no.

He raised his eyes to mine, looking surprised. “I… do you think it was?” he asked softly. I stared up at him, debating my answer. After a few moments, I shook my head slowly.

“So you didn’t… mind?” he asked, a smile starting to play on his lips.

“Of course not,” I said, smiling at him, but the light mood didn’t last. Reality came crushing down on me, and I took a step away from him. “Max, what does this mean?” I asked cautiously. “I mean, do you want to… you know, go out or something? Or, I mean, if you don’t that’s totally ok too… In fact, I’m sure you don’t. This was probably just a mistake right? An accident—” He touched his lips to mine again, effectively silencing me.

“Why would it be a mistake?” He asked, pulling away slightly. “I’ve had a crush on you forever, Parker, but you never seemed to notice. No matter how hard I tried, I never seemed to grab your attention, and then you went out with that dick, Kyle...” His nostrils flared and his eyes hardened.

Despite the unbelievable information I had just received, I was coherent enough to laugh out loud at his last comment. “Max that was in 9th grade! We only went out for about a day—”

“Try a month and a half,” he mumbled, his voice still taking on that rough edge.

“Yeah, but still, it was never anything serious. I mean, we went on dates and everything—” I broke off as Max’s jaw ticked. “But… mostly it was just casual, and he’s just my friend now. I can’t think of him any other way.”

“Doesn’t mean he can’t think of you in that way,” Max replied tightly.

I didn’t have an answer for that, so I figured it was time to pull him back to our original subject. “I believe we got off track, here, Evans.” I said. “You were telling me that—”

“Liz Parker, where are you?!” A voice sounded from behind the door. A second later it swung open to reveal my father. “You shift started ten minutes ago, and it's our busiest time of day! People are starting to complain!” he said angrily. Then he caught sight of Max, and a suspicious gleam entered his eye. Uh-oh.

“Uh, dad, Max was borrowing some notes for biology, but now he has to go.” I said, shoving Max out the swinging door. He grabbed my hand, a confused look in his eye, but I just hissed, “Later!” and pushed him into the restaurant.

He hesitated, grabbing my arms to stop me from pushing him any farther. “Are you going to this Valentine’s thing tonight?” he asked.

“What? Oh, the stupid date thing? Yeah, why?” I asked quickly, glancing toward me father.

“ Isabel signed me up too,” he said, “So I’ll see you there?”

“Uh, yeah,” I said, “Now go!”

He smiled at me and then turned, getting lost in the crowd of people.

“Lizzie—” My father started in a stern voice.

“Dad, I can’t talk now, I have a job to do.” I said, walking over to table three to get their orders.

Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that, while I won’t swear by it, I’m thinking there are probably 8 or 9 more parts left. I don’t really have it all mapped out, but if I had to guess; 20 parts is about how long I want it to be. Anyway, this is pathetically short; it's actually just half of part twelve, but I just don't have time to finish it. Hopefully by the weekend I'll have the other part up! Sorry, guys!

Oh, and I'm not so happy with this part, but I'm really pushed for time. Sorry guys, I hope it doesn't suck too bad. :(

Thanks sooo much for the feedback!!!!!! :D :D

Part 12

Oh. My. Gosh. I walked around the café in a daze, taking orders and handing out food as if on autopilot. Did that just happen? Was I dreaming? This was way to perfect to be real!

“Liz, Liz!” I heard someone call, and turned to see Annie, one of our waitresses, looking at me strangely. “Liz, you just took my order,” she told me, walking over to me and grabbing the plate. “You feeling ok?” she asked, and then quickly turned to serve the food.

Was I ok? Was I OK? Of course I was! Max Evans had just made out with me in the back of my parent’s restaurant! I was better than ok! I was great!

And one thing I did not want to do after my amazing kiss with Max Evans, was work.

“Hey, Annie,” I called, thinking fast. “You’re right, I’m not feeling well. Cover for me?” I asked, already removing my headband.

“Sure,” she replied, looking at me with concern. “Do you want anything? Should I bring up some soup?”

I laughed a little. I couldn’t help it; everything seemed so much funnier than normal. “No, I’m ok. I just need a little rest.”

“Ok,” she said, turning back to her customers. Without a second thought, I whipped my apron off and ran up the stairs. I grabbed the cordless phone and headed to my room, shutting the door behind me. I quickly dialed Maria’s number and waiter for her to answer.

After three rings, the phone picked up, and Maria said, “I’m bored."

I laughed and sat on my bed, taking off my shoes. “Oh, that’s a nice greeting,” I said, giggling.

“What? I knew it was you,” she defended, and I laughed again.

There was a slight pause, and I knew she was wondering why I had called. “Guess what?” I asked happily.

“What?” she asked, immediately sounding more attentive.

“Hmm, guess,” I said playfully, laughing at her huffy sigh.

“Give me a clue,” she demanded.

“Ok me and Max...” I started.

I heard Maria’s small intake of air, and she said, “Just tell me Liz!”

“Fine,” I said, pretending to be annoyed. “If you must know, Max and I… made out in the back room!!” I blurted, unable to hold it in any longer.

Maria was silent for a full minute.

“Ohmygosh!” she screeched finally, and I had to hold the phone away from my ear. “Lizzie!! Are you serious?! I told you he liked you!” she yelled.

“Maria!” I interrupted firmly. “Stop shouting! I think you ruptured my eardrum!” I scolded her, wincing.

I could almost hear the wide smile that I was sure was spreading across her face. After a few deep breaths, she said, “This is so great! So tell me what happened? Is he a good kisser? If you had to rate him one through 10, one being the lowest, ten being the highest, what would you—”

“Let me just tell you what happened first!” I interrupted happily, and then recounted my recent experience with Max Evans.

Maria sighed. “Aw, Liz, I’m so happy for you! Did he ask you out after he kissed you?” she asked, seeming to have calmed down a little.

“Well, no, but he had to leave pretty quickly. My dad kind of interrupted and…” I drifted off, knowing she’d get the message.

Oh,” she said in comprehension. “Is your dad going all over-protective on you?” she asked curiously.

“No… well, I haven’t given him a chance to really. I’m hoping he won’t.” I said worriedly, knowing what a big obstacle that would be. Feeling the need to change the subject, I said, “Max told me he’d see me at the Valentine’s date thing tonight.” I told her, awaiting her reaction.

“Oooh,” she cooed, perking up at once. “Are you guys going together?”

I rolled my eyes; my best friend could be flaky sometimes. “No, it’s a blind date dance, remember? And the probability of me pulling Max’s name out of that stupid hat is, when 29 other girls are entered, about—”

“Oh, stop being so smart!” she said exasperatedly. “Who cares about probability? What if it’s meant to be that you draw Max’s—”

It was my turn to interrupt her. “Maria, enough with the fate stuff! This is real life, remember?”

“Whatever,” she said, and I could hear the laughter in her voice. “The dance is in about two hours, do you want me to come over?” she asked.

“Uh… no,” I replied, remembering the last time I agreed to let her give me a makeover.

“Aw, come on! What if you end up going to the dance with Max? Don’t you want to look hot? Or, what if you get someone else? Don’t you want to make Max jealous?” she asked temptingly.

I chewed on my lip, pondering my options. After thinking about Maria’s words thoroughly, I replied, “All right fine.”

“Good!” Maria yelled into my already tender ear. “I’ll be over in about 10 minutes. My mom is finally letting me drive again.”

Alright, so here it is, as promised! And as always, thanks for all the wonderfull feedback!!!!!

Part 13

I examined Maria’s handy work in the mirror. Much better than last time. She seemed to have taken a hint; the makeup was much more subtle, and my hair was pulled back in a simple twist. The dress Maria had picked out was actually quite beautiful; a deep red silk dress with a low, but not too low, neckline and a low cut back. It showed off just enough skin to look appealing, but not enough to look trashy.

“So?” Maria asked, studying my face. I turned towards her, taking in her appearance as well. She looked simply stunning. her curly blonde hair was piled on her head in a messy yet graceful hairdo, and her dress was a soft lavender, showing off a little more than mine did. He makeup was likewise; somewhat thicker than mine.

“Nice,” I replied, turning back to the mirror. “Very me-ish.”

“Thought you’d like it,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I used barely any make-up, and your hair is just plain boring, but… it looks awesome on you,” she said thoughtfully. “You’re definitely one of those ‘less is more’ people.” she added. I sent her a puzzled look, unable to interpret her meaning. She rolled her eyes. “It takes very little to make you look good,” she elaborated.

“Oh,” I said uncertainly, not knowing how to respond. “Uh… thanks.”

“Sure.” she replied, “Now we have to go; don’t want to be late!”

My heart started to bang against my ribs. “Right, ok… are you driving, or am I?” I asked.

“You can drive,” she replied, picking up my keys from my night stand and tossing them to me.

“Right,” I replied, catching them with shaking hands. “Let’s just get this over with.”

*******

“Wow, impressive!” Maria yelled over the pulsing music as we walked into the school gymnasium. It was true; the dance committee had actually made the gym look pretty good. There were many blinking and glittering disco lights, and the whole place had been covered in red and pink paper. It looked the inside of a giant candy heart.

At that very moment, the music cut and Tess picked up the microphone. “Ok, everyone, it’s almost time!” she yelled happily, giving a blinding smile. “We’ll wait another 10 minutes to make sure everyone has arrived, and then we’ll be calling all the girls up one at a time to let them pick from the hat,” she said, nodding to a jock standing next to her, who was holding a top hat filled with bits of paper.

Maria let out a thoughtful, “Hmm,” staring at the guy with the hat. Well, this couldn’t be good.

“What ‘hmm’?” I asked apprehensively, turning towards her.

“Nothing, nothing,” she said lightly, and then pointed over my shoulder. “Look there’s Max,” she told me, smiling. I spun on my heel, my foot catching on my long dress. I pitched forward, closing my eyes and holding my hands out to stop my fall. Instead, my hands met a pair of hard, warm shoulders. The rest of my body crashed into the person standing in front of me, and my eyes flew open. I looked up into Max’s beautiful amber eyes.

“You ok?” he asked, his arms wrapped around my waste to keep me from falling.

“I am now,” I sighed without thinking, and then blushed slightly. My hands still rested on his shoulders.

We stood like that for a few more moments, and then broke apart. I fidgeted with my arms, feeling self-conscious.

“So…” I started, trying to strike up a conversation.

“So…” he repeated. Well, that didn’t work very well.

“How have you been?” I asked, and then felt slightly stupid. “I mean, since I last saw you a couple of hours ago…”

He smiled down at me. “Good, played basketball for a while… you know, the usual.” he replied, and the image of Max Evans sweaty and shirtless while playing an intense game of basketball came into my mind. “Hey, are you ok? Your eyes look sort of glazed,” he asked, looking down at me with concern.

I flushed and quickly nodded, pushing the image from my head. “Yup, I’m good,” I said.

He smiled and laughed, grabbing me arm lightly. “Enough of the small talk,” he laughed, “Come here.”

And he kissed me. Right in front of everyone. I was a little self-conscious at first, but then I let myself fall into Max’s kiss. His tongue asked for entrance into my mouth, and I quickly granted it, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“Excuse me,” a loud voice interrupted us, and we turned to see about half-a-dozen cheerleaders standing behind us, looking pissed.

“Yes?” Max asked casually, draping his arm across my shoulders.

“This is a public school event, would you mind getting a room?” one of them asked, and the others nodded and glared.

“We’ll do that,” Max replied, which caused many gasps from the blondes. They scowled and stalked away, talking nastily.

I laughed as they left. “Well, your fan club isn’t too happy,” I said, grinning.

He gave a dramatic sigh. “Oh no. How will I go on?” he asked, and we both laughed.

“All right everyone, it’s time!” Tess’s voice once again rang out over the loud speakers. She started reading of girls’ names, and one by one they walked up to the stage. At that moment, Maria chose to appear by my side.

“Hey Liz, Max,” she greeted, looking very smug.

“Hey, where have you been?” I asked, suddenly suspicious. I glanced toward the stage and saw Mr. Jock fumbling with a slip of paper inside the hat.

“Oh, nowhere,” she said airily, waving the question off. “So how are you two? I saw you making out all over the dance floor,” She said, laughing. I blushed.

“Oh well…” I started.

“Yeah, that was fun,” Max remarked casually, pulling me closer. “Want to do it again?” he whispered, grinning devilishly.

“Liz Parker,” Tess’s voice echoed from the stage.

“Ohmygosh!” Maria shouted, giving me a little shove. “Get up there!”

My face froze on horror; I turned to Max. “Go on, Parker,” he said, removing his arm from around my shoulders.

I stumbled up to the stage, tripping over my feet. Once I reached the steps, I walked slowly and carefully, trying not to embarrass myself in front of everyone.

“Alright, Liz, you’re going to pick a random name from the hat. Whoever you get is your date for the evening!” Tess said in a falsely happy voice. She smiled wide, but I could see the disdain in her eyes.

“Ok,” I said, walking over to the guy holding the hat.

“Hey,” he said from the corner of his mouth, whispering so that only I could hear, “Pick the name folded twice,” he told me.

“Huh?” I asked quietly, not understanding.

“I said, pick the name on the top that’s folder twice,” he repeated.

I glared suspiciously, hesitating. Why was he telling me to do this? Was he just trying to trick me or make fun of me? As if sensing my thoughts, he sent me a charming grin and a wink. I held my breath, reaching into the hat. Seeing the name he was talking about, I made a split second decision, quickly pulling it out.

“All right, let’s see who you got,” Tess shouted in my ear. I unfolded the paper, closing my eyes out of nervousness. When the slip of paper was completely smooth, I open them again, staring down at the name.

Max Evans

No. Way.

“And Liz’s date for tonight is…” Tess started, snatching the paper away.

“Max… Evans?” She said, her voice changing to shock as she read the name. Then her entire face crumbled, and she looked pissed as hell. She glared for a few seconds, and then put her disguise was back in place.

“So, Max Evans, come on up.” She said through clenched teeth.

I watched as he made his way out of the crowd, looking tall and stunning and… thrilled.

“Hi,” he said softly as he made his way over to me. He gave a little bow and took my hand, pressing it to his lips and causing me to almost swoon.

This night just got a whole lot better.

Ah, I know it's been forever! I'm sorry, I'm going to try to update more often, I really am! Anyway, this part is...well, remember when I said there'd be a little angst?

Thanks for the fantastic feeback! I love you all!!!!! Oh, and a huge thanks to those who nominated me, it makes me feel very honored, guys!!! :D

Part 14

“Ok, everyone! Now that you’re paired up, we’ll be moving into the dinner portion of the evening!” Tess crooned, long since regaining her happy persona. She’d kept a strong hold on Kyle’s arm ever since she’d pulled his name out of the hat. He looked like he was in physical pain. Poor guy.

“Everyone will take a table,” she continued, indicating the restaurant-like set-up to the left of the dance floor, “and just to make it fun, the dance committee has come up with a list of questions and challenges for you and your date to talk about as you eat dinner.” she finished.

There was a great shuffling noise as everyone moved over to take a table. Max grabbed my hand and pulled me over to one in the corner. I glanced over my shoulder and studied Maria, who was looking incredibly sulky and staring at Michael.

I could almost laugh at their situation; Maria had been paired up with some nameless jock, while Michael, who had been clearly forced to come as Max had, was paired up with Courtney Banks. I was guessing Maria wasn’t the only one who knew how to bribe.

“Have a seat, Ms. Parker,” Max said playfully, gallantly pulling out my chair. I giggled and sat down, Maria no longer on my mind.

“Thank you,” I replied. I picked up the challenge sheet in front of me; Max sat down and did the same.

“First challenge: Order food for the other person,” Liz read off, peeking at Max over the sheet.

“Hmm,” Max said thoughtfully, picking up the makeshift menu that the school had created. I mirrored his actions, wondering what to order for him. Would he like some kind of stake? Or a hamburger? Onion rings? He always ordered a double cheeseburger with fries and a cherry cola at the café, but maybe he wouldn’t like that now.

The waitress, who looked like a parent volunteer, came over all to quickly. “Hey guys, can I get you anything to drink?” she said cheerfully, holding a pad and pencil.

The drink I could do. “Cherry cola,” I said, nodding to Max. He smiled.

“Iced tea,” he said in return, and I beamed. I loved iced tea.

The waitress nodded and smiled. “Alrighty, I’ll be back to take your food orders in a minute.” She walked away.

“That was the easy part,” Max murmured, still concentrating on the menu.

“Having trouble?” I asked playfully, leaning forward. “Want a hint?”

He looked up, laughter in his eyes. “I think hints are against the rules,” he replied, feigning a stern look.

I shrugged and sat back, my lips shifting. “Suit yourself.”

After a while the waitress returned with our drinks. She must have known about the challenge, because she set the cherry coke in front of Max and the iced tea in front of me. “Have you decided on anything?” she asked, looking from me to Max.

“You can go first,” I said, trying to buy time.

“Ok, she’ll have the chicken sandwich, light on mayonnaise, with a salad on the side,” he said swiftly, looking very confident.

“And the dressing on the salad?” The waitress asked, scribbling down his order.

He studied me for a moment. “Ranch,” he replied finally.

The waitress turned to me next. “And you?”

I took a deep breath, and followed my gut. “He’ll have a double cheeseburger, extra pickles, with a side order of fries.” The waitress wrote it down and strode away, leaving a silence in her wake.

“Well?” Liz prompted, when he didn’t speak.

“Nice,” he replied, giving her a half smile. “but you’ve been taking my order for years.”

“Well, I guess that does supply an advantage,” I replied easily, relaxing. “How did you know what I’d want?”

“Because I’ve watched you for years,” he replied simply, his gaze flittering away.

I sat in silence for a moment. “Years?” I asked, the word coming out a little choked. That was probably the sweetest thing I had ever heard.

“I’m not a stalker, don’t worry,” he said, sounding as if he couldn’t decide whether he was joking or not. “I just—”

I cut him off by leaning over and planting a sound kiss on his lips. “You’re without a doubt the sweetest guy I have ever met.” I stated, sitting back in my chair.

He cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable. “Uh, thanks. So what’s next?” he asked hurriedly.

“Hmm,” I said, staring down at the sheet. “Questions. You want to start?”

He glanced down at the paper in front of him. A smile formed on his lips as he read. “Ok, first question: What’s your favorite type of music?”

I giggled at the lameness of the whole thing, but answered truthfully. “I’d have to say in between rock and pop. I don’t like the loud, head banging stuff, but I don’t like the pointless, shallow songs either. I like the type of musician who plays his own guitar and writes his own music.”

He laughed, and I glared playfully. “Ok, fine, what do you like, then?” I questioned.

“Well, I don’t mind the head banging stuff sometimes, but mostly I like alternative bands.” He replied easily. Then he looked at the sheet again. “Alright, next question. Have you ever been kissed?” He read.

I blushed a bright red, and moved my hair to cover my face. ‘Well… o-obviously. B-by you.” I said, tripping over my words.

He smiled and tilted my chin up. “I was your first kiss, Parker?” He asked, his eyes shining with amusement and something else.

Captured by the interesting look he was giving me, I could only nod my head. My embarrassment started to ebb away as he spoke. “That’s good, because you were mine too,” he stated, not a trace of a blush on his cheeks.

“R-really?” I asked. To say I was surprised was an underestimate. “I figured you'd… I mean, all of the girls throw themselves at you, so I just assumed…” I trailed off weakly.

“Don’t be so quick to assume things,” he admonished, stroking my cheek. “I said I’d liked you for years, didn’t I?”

I sighed. “Yeah, and I believe you… it just seems so… impossible.” I stated, staring into his eyes. He opened his mouth to respond, his eyes gleaming with curiosity, but the makeshift waitress arrived with our food.

“Here you are,” she said cheerfully, setting the plates in front of us. “Enjoy.”

The rest of the meal we spent laughing over our dinner as we went through each question and challenge. When I had taken my last bite — fed off of Max’s fork per challenge number 13 — someone picked the microphone up yet again. The person banged on it, causing a large screeching sound to reverberate through the room. I covered my ears, along with everyone else, and winced as I looked up on the stage. It was Pam. She looked tipsy, her hand shaking slightly as she raised the microphone to her lips.

“How’s it going?!” She yelled in a hoarse voice, causing everyone to wince again. “ I just heard a very interesting story from none other than our own Max Evans!” She yelled, and our table flooded with light. I blinked and covered my eyes, distinctly hearing Max let out a soft string of curses beside me.

“He told me a very funny story about a girl. Now, he and this girl got along fine, but he decided he wanted to play with her a little bit. Make her believe he was in love, even though he really wasn’t. Now this plain, pathetic girl always had a crush on sports star Max Evans for just about ever, so she believe him,” Pam paused, and I got a sick, twisted feeling in my gut. “And now I feel that it’s my duty to let this girl know that she’d been had.” Pam continued, putting a fake look of solemnity on her face. “that Max Evans has played with her emotions for his own amusement,” she sighed, and then said, with a great flourish, “I’m so sorry, Liz.”

My world collapsed. Everyone turned to stare, and I felt my face heat up in embarrassment and anger. As I heard laughter rumble around the cafeteria, I felt the undeniable need to get away.

Leaping up, I ignored the people calling my name, half running toward the doors. When I made it, I pushed them open and ran, half tripping as my high heals hit the uneven ground beside the sidewalk.

“Liz!” I heard a voice call, but I didn’t turn around. I ran faster, but he was too quick for me. He grabbed my arm and whirled me around. “Liz, please, none of it—”

“Don’t!” I yelled, wiping my eyes furiously as the tears fell. “Don’t tell me it wasn’t true! How did she know if it wasn’t! No one’s even seen us together, and the fact that I picked you out of the hat could have been coincidence!” I yelled, turning back around.

“Liz, Liz, please—” He said, but I jerked my arm away from him.

“I thought you were different!” I said, tears falling steadily now. “I thought you weren’t like them!” He started to speak, but I interrupted. “I was wrong!” I then took of running. This time he didn’t follow.

Thanks everyone!!!! And thanks for the bumps!

Small disclaimer: The little poem snippet is by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
:D

Part 15

I sat in my room with Maria on my right side, Alex on my left, and a large tub of Ben and Jerry’s triple chocolate in my lap. Ice cream always seemed to help in times like these, and I needed all the help I could get. Which is why Alex and Maria had come to my house the second they'd heard about what happened, Maria leaving her date in the middle of the dance.

“He was a loser anyway,” she assured me when I questioned her about it. “Plus, you need me way more.”

That was true. I felt like my heart was crushed, and I wasn’t sure if it would ever mend again. Had Max really told Pam all those things? Had he just been...using me? My heart immediately fought the idea, but my brain was telling me that everything fit. How else would Pam have known? I thought back to the night at the after-game party. Was that what Pam had been talking about when she’d started up that game of truth or dare? Max had let her in on the little scheme, and she had been threatening to tell me about it?

“Max wouldn’t have done this Liz,” Maria said for the 15th time, breaking me out of my dark thoughts. “He just wouldn’t have. He isn’t like that.”

I felt my annoyance rise. “Isn’t like what? He’s popular, he has people drooling over him all the time and telling him he’s perfect, why wouldn’t he do this? He’s probably just as arrogant as all the other pretty people in our school.”

“But Liz—”

“And besides,” I interrupted. “Why would he be interested in me? God I was so stupid! I knew it was just too good to be true!” I exclaimed sadly, digging my spoon into my ice cream and taking a big bite.

“Liz, people aren’t always what they appear,” Alex broke in, apparently deciding that Maria’s approach wasn't working. “Take Isabel Evans. She acts like an ice princess on the outside, but—”

I winced. “Alex, I’m really happy that you and Queen Iz are getting along so well, but it really doesn’t help in this situation,” I told him, trying to sound as kind as possible. I didn’t want to offend him, but anything connected to the name Evans brought a sharp pain to my heart.

“I’m just saying, don’t judge the situation at face value. Sometimes things aren’t always as they appear,” he responded, sounding utterly unfazed by my comment.

“This all stems from you’re self doubt,” Maria said decidedly, getting up and starting to pace.

“What does? The fact that Max wanted to use me? I guess it did help him; he thought I’d be so desperate to be told I was pretty that—” I started to rant bitterly, but Maria interrupted.

“No, the fact that you doubt him stems from you’re low self confidence. And do you even hear yourself Liz? This is Max Evans we’re talking about! The Max Evans that has always gone out of his way to help people, or make them feel good about themselves, or stop someone from being picked on.”

I sat back, realizing what she said did make some sense. I had never seen Max be mean to someone, or try to make them feel bad. “It could have been an act! And even if all that wasn’t, it doesn’t change the fact that Pam knew about us. And unless you told her, which I know you’d never do, it had to be him. No one else knew.” I reiterated stubbornly.

Maria just shook her head sadly. “By the time you realize that all of that is bull, it’ll be too late. You’ll lose him.” She said softly.

“He was never mine to lose,” I replied just as quietly, my voiced laced with sadness. I heard a snort come from Maria’s direction, but I refused to look at her. Then, needing to change the subject, I said, “How did things go with you? I saw you staring at Michael the whole time.” I said, but my joking note fell flat.

Maria, who must have decided it was not doing any good to badger me about Max, turned back to look at me. “That bitch Courtney rigged the drawings so that she got him.” She said, momentarily distracted by her anger. “I mean, who the hell rigs a contest? Well, besides me, but that was for good purposes. It wasn’t for my benefit, like that stupid little—”

“Maria!” I yelled, noticing she was getting side tracked. Her words also brought us back to Max, and that was definitely something I did not want to think about. "Did anything else happen?” I asked.

Maria grinned sheepishly. “Uh, well, before everything with Pam…” she drifted off, and I turned away.

“Yes?” I asked, forcing my voice to sound cheerful.

“Well, I watched her flirt with him all through dinner, so I finally excused myself from my date and walked over there.” He eyes flashed in a devilish way. “Well, one thing led to another and… we ended up making out in the locker rooms.”

I gasped at the unexpected ending. “What? I thought you were completely over him. Isn’t that what you said just this afternoon?”

“What, is was harmless, Liz. It doesn’t mean anything.” She said, rolling her eyes as if that were obvious. For some reason, her words pissed me off.

“Have you asked Michael that? Does he know it didn’t mean anything?” I burst out, and she looked at me in surprise. “God, you keep leading him on Maria! I don’t know if it’s because you don’t trust him not to do the same thing to you, but you need to stop it!” I stood up. “I’ve talked to him, ok? He’s crazy about you, and you keep giving these mixed signals! It isn’t fair!”

“Chica, I—” She started, looking both upset and concerned.

“No, forget it.” I said, breathing deeply. “Look, I appreciate both of you guys for being here, but could you just… I really need some time alone.” I could see they were hesitant, so I said, “Please, just… Let me try to deal with this, ok?” I asked, tears swimming in my eyes.

Slowly, both Alex and Maria nodded. “Ok, Liz, but if you need anything, call ok?” Maria said seriously, staring at me through worried eyes. I nodded and managed to give a half smile.

“I’ll be fine,” I assured her.

As I listened to their footsteps fade away, I collapsed onto my bed, unable to hold back the sobs any longer.

*******

I was the laughingstock of the entire school. Everywhere I went, people were pointing, laughing, or gawking. Guys were now staring at me with interest in their eyes, probably thinking that if I’d caught Max Evans’s eye, I must have been a pretty good lay. I pondered turning around and heading straight back to my car when a group near me whistled and made catcalls, but I just couldn’t let them win. Instead, I walked into the school with my head held high, trying to ignore loud whispering going on like a windstorm around me.

“Hey,” I said to Maria in a determinedly casual voice. She turned to look at me, and I caught a flicker of concern and pity in her gaze before she hid it.

“Hey,” She replied, mimicking my tone. We fell silent after that, and I moved to get my books from my locker. Upon opening the small door, a folded piece of paper flitted out the opening and fell to the ground.

“Oh, great. I thought this was over,” I mumbled, picking up the paper. I contemplated crumbling it up and throwing it away, but I found myself unfolding it instead.

I love you not only for what you are,
but for what I am when I am with you.

I glanced around, looking for more, but that was all there was. It was different from 'anonymous'’s other ones; it was short, sweet, and poetic. I felt my face lift into a small smile when I read the words over again.

I looked up, awaiting Maria’s reaction, but caught a look of deep confusion on her face. “Don’t you want to see?” I asked. “He’s gotten more romantic in his absence.” I commented.

“That’s not…” Maria drifted off, and I thought she saw a flash of guilt in her eyes.

“What’s going on?” I asked, suddenly very suspicious.

“Ok, Liz, there’s something I need to tell you.” She said, and I felt my sense of foreboding grow.

“Ok…?” I prompted, not at all sure I wanted to hear this.

“Don't freak out or anything, but... I sent you those letters.” Maria confessed in a rush. “You were so unconfident, and I really wanted to help somehow.”

“So you invented someone.” I stated flatly, my voice hard. This was just like her.

“I wanted to help!” She said somewhat desperately. “I mean, you have zero self confidence Liz. I wanted you to see how great you really are!”

I sighed wearily. I didn’t want to deal with Maria’s pep talks, and I didn't have enough energy to be mad at her. “So you sent this one too, then?” I asked, my voice no longer confrontational. I didn’t want to lose my best friend at a time like this.

“Here’s the thing,” She said, her brows furrowing. “After you got hooked up with Max—” I flinched, and she broke off apologetically. “Sorry, bad subject. But after you did, I figured he could help you with your self confidence. 'Anonymous' was no longer needed.”

I thought I knew where she was going with this, but I wanted to clarify. “Meaning?”

“Meaning I didn’t send that. Someone else did.”

Once again, thanks for the feedback, everyone! And POM is right, lol, I have a lot of school work and stuff on my plate right now. Ah, who needs it?

This is the second to the last part, I think. It's really short, but I wanted to add this before the ending, which will be the next part. I promise I'll get it out to you guys soon after this, since I'm anxious to get everything wrapped up!

Part 16

I walked to my next class in a fog, my head spinning. First Maria told me that that person sending me love notes was her, and then she told me that the last one was from someone else. But who? Could this one be a joke? After all, I thought the other one was real for a little while, but it was only Maria. I didn’t dare think of the one person I wanted it to be, because I knew he didn’t care about me.

“Liz,” A voice called, and my whole body tensed. It was strange that I hadn’t heard him coming, but then again my thoughts had been elsewhere.

“Leave me alone Max,” I bit back without turning around. I continues walking, but unfortunately he caught up with me anyway.

“Liz, let’s just talk, ok?” He asked, grabbing my arm. I bit back a sigh of frustration at the feelings his touch evoked. Why did he make me feel this way still?

“Fine,” I said wearily, letting him lead me into a nearby empty classroom. I walked in before him and heard him shut the door. Then I turned to look at him.

I raised my brows in question. “So?”

“I didn’t tell Pam anything,” he said quickly, perhaps realizing that I was prepared to get up and walk out at any second. “I don’t know how she found out, but—”

“Really? Then who told her we were together?” I asked angrily.

“I don’t know, she could have seen us kissing earlier!” He said, sounding somewhat desperate. I refused to be moved by his sad brown eyes or the frown on his lips.

I thought for a moment about what he’d said. It wasn’t completely impossible, maybe one of Pam’s cheerleading buddies ran off and told her after Max and I had made fun of them. My defenses went right back up, however, when another thought came to mind. “How’d they know that you said… said that you’ve always had feelings for you?” I asked, and to my chagrin, my voice was soft and filled with hurt. I steeled myself and continued, “How’d they know that I’ve always loved you? Someone had to tell them these things, Max!”

He winced, but something flickered in his honey eyes. “You… you love me?” he asked, sounding dazed, and I realized that we had yet to mention the ‘L’ word in our relationship. Cursing my slip of the tongue, I turned my back on him.

“That’s...that’s really not the point, here,” I mumbled, rapidly blinking my tear filled eyes. “How’d she know, Max?” I questioned again.

There was a long silence, and then I heard him walk up behind me. I turned quickly and tried to take a step back, but the wall was behind me. Moving quicker than I would have thought possible, he glued his lips to mine in a passionate kiss. I indulged in my shock for about five seconds, before I jerked away. I moved quickly toward the door, my head caught in a jumble of confused thoughts, but his voice stopped me.

“I love you, too,” He said softly, and I turned quickly. “And maybe Pam figured that out because she can see it. So tell me something, if a bitch like her is able to tell what love is, why can’t someone as wonderful as you?”

I stared up into his face, my thoughts even more confused. And then I felt the undeniable urge to run away. I had to get out before I did something stupid; I needed to get my thoughts together. I moved quickly toward the door, exiting the classroom and fleeing down the hallway.

“Parker!” A voice called, and I turned to see Kyle Valenti walking towards me. I breathed a sigh of relief. Kyle. Kyle was safe. I waited for him to catch up to me.

“What were you running from, Parker?” He asked, throwing an arm around my neck.

“Nothing,” I replied.

“Hey listen, I heard about the whole Max thing,” He said gently, pulling me closer.

“Yeah, I don’t really want to—”

“The guy’s not like that, Parker,” He interrupted bluntly. He continued, unaware of my attempts to stop him. “He and I have never been the best of friends, but even I can tell the guy is crazy about you.”

“Kyle, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but I really don’t think it will help.” I replied quickly.

“You know, I always knew how that guy felt about you, and I think I always knew how you felt about him.” He pushed on. “Which is why I’ve always hated him. ‘Cause he’s always had your heart, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t change that.”

A slightly shocked silence greeted his words; I think even he was surprised at what he had said. I took a moment to absorb them, wondering if it could be true. Had Max really felt that way for me? Could it be that I was just too blinded by my own feelings of unworthiness that I couldn’t see it? I immediately shied away from the thought, telling myself not to go there.

“Kyle, you’re wrong. He doesn’t have my heart,” I insisted, and then blurted, “How about we go on a date sometime? It would be fun if the two of us went somewhere together again.”

He jerked his head up and stared into my eyes for a long minute. Then he let out a sigh. “Jesus, Parker,” he muttered, “You don’t make this easy, do you?” I opened my mouth in confusion, but he pushed on, “Listen, I’m going to do both of us a favor and turn you down. You need to stop running away from Evans, Liz.” With that said, he gave a little wave and started to walk down the deserted hallway, leaving me very confused in his wake.

Part 17

This was it. The bell would ring in 5 minutes and release us to lunch. I was so nervous I felt like throwing up, but I was determined to do this.

“Liz, are you ok?” Maria asked next to me. I hadn’t filled her in on my plan, thinking that this was something I needed to do on my own.

“I’m fine,” I said, swallowing hard. She must have seen through me, but she didn’t have time to comment. At that moment, the shrill sound of the bell echoed throughout the school. I tensed.

“You’re acting really weird,” She said, frowning at me as though she was fearful of my sanity.

“I’ll be ok after lunch,” I said with great certainty as we followed the mass of students into the crowded cafeteria.

“Ok…” She said, still looking unconvinced. “You buying lunch today?”

“Yeah, but go on, I’ll be there in a minute,” I said quickly, waving her away with my hand. She gave one last concerned look, pulled a couple of bucks out of her wallet, and headed for the lunch line. After she was gone I looked around, trying to find the familiar blonde hair. I spotted her at her usual table, surrounded by the same usual idiots. I walked swiftly over to her, my knees shaking but my determination telling me I had to do this. Her head came up suddenly and her eyes met mine.

“Are you lost, sweetheart?” Pam asked, sniffing in distain.

“No,” I said in a strong, carrying voice. “I was just wondering why you were such a snotty bitch.”

The lunch room went deathly still around me as people looked our way curiously. Pam looked shocked.

“Excuse me?” She asked, shaking her perfect head as if unable to believe what I’d just said to her.

“I said, why are you such a bitch?” I reiterated, my voice echoing in the still cafeteria. “All you do is go around and act like you dominate this school, like everyone should bow down to you. You and your goons spend all day picking people apart because they aren’t blonde barbies like yourself. And I just want to know why.” I cocked my head to the side.

She snickered, sending me a condescending look. “Because I can, honey. In case you haven’t noticed, people do bow down to me.” She said in a voice that suggested she was talking to someone very slow.

I shook my head, looking at her sympathetically. “You’re a fool if you think any of this shit matters. If you think any of these people really give a damn about you. Why do you think Tess goes after Max, the man you’ve made it ever so clear that you want, every time you’re back is turned?” I said, using her same tone.

She looked disconcerted, and shot an angry look at Tess. Tess shrugged her shoulders in a so-sue-me sort of way. Pam glanced around at her so-called friends, but no one responded. At this moment, Pam Troy was all alone.

“Look here, little Miss Scientist. I rule this school, and you’re just jealous because I’ve got the perfect life, while you’re stuck in the biology room doing science experiments and dreaming about Max Evans.”

“You actually think that means anything?” I asked her, laughing openly. “You think that because you’re popular in high school, you’re life is perfect? Well, enjoy it now. You’ll probably be hanging onto your pathetic memories of being crowned homecoming queen for the rest of your life.”

With that, I turned around and started to walk away, my head held high.

“Yeah?!” She yelled, clearly pissed off now. “Well, you’re just upset because Max Evans used you! Tell me, did you sleep with him? Or did he not get that far into his scheme?”

I whipped around to face her once more. “Oh, I get it.” I said slowly, putting a look of great understanding on my face. “It’s jealousy, isn’t it? What’s the matter, little Miss Princess is so unhappy with her own perfect life that she has to pick on little Miss Scientist?” I shook my head. “I was a fool to ever believe you. You’re just pissed because he wanted me. Me. Not you.”

I started to walk away again, ignoring her angry calls to get my attention. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Maria, standing with her mouth hanging open. To the left of her I saw Kyle, who gave me a nod and a smile. I smiled back. But I couldn’t relax yet. I had one more thing to do.

******

I listened to the muffled strands of music, giving myself a moment to breathe. The whole confront-your-fears thing really wasn’t easy, but then again I had never assumed it would be. Still, telling off Pam had been one of the few defining moments of my life. I’d ever felt so happy with myself, or so free of worry. I listened to the melody for a second more, and then opened the door to the band room. The sounds swiftly stopped as a surprised intake of breath sounded from inside the room.

“Liz?” Max asked, putting his guitar down and standing up. “What are you doing here?”

“You had me worried, you know,” I said, ignoring his question as I walked closer to him. “I thought you would have been in the lunchroom. I almost went into a panic when I didn’t find you there.” I smiled up at him. “You missed my opening act. Pity too, I'm pretty proud of it.”

“What are you—?” He started, but I interrupted.

"I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I'm with you." I said softly, unable to meet his eyes as I quoted the beautiful poem he'd slipped into my locker.

"How did you find out I was the one--" He started in a surprised voice.

I didn't let him finish. Instead I threw myself at him, wrapping my arms around his neck and bringing his lips to meet mine. He stood still for a second, as if too shocked to move, and then wrapped his strong arms around my waist, bringing me closer. I kissed him with everything I had, sweeping my tongue through his mouth and allowing his entrance into mine. After a few moments I pulled away.

“That might have been another defining moment,” I whispered foggily, my brain still on the feel of Max’s lips on mine.

“Mind explaining to me what exactly that was?” He asked, sounding wary. It was as if he thought I was trying to play with his head. I frowned.

“A kiss.” I said. “A kiss to tell you that I’m sorry. A kiss to tell you that I was wrong, and that I finally see the truth.” I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. “Max, I was so stupid. I just didn’t understand how you could—”

“Liz, you don’t have to explain; I understand. I know what my reputation is. I know why you doubted me.”

I shook my head. “But you don’t. I doubted you, not because of what I’d heard of you or even because of what Pam had said, but because I doubted myself.” I paused, looking into his honey eyes. He looked puzzled. “I’ve never been able to think much of myself, Max. Maybe it’s because I’ve been bullied and teased since the beginning of time, or maybe it’s because it just isn't in my personality to hold myself in high esteem. I don’t know, but the point is, I just didn’t understand what you saw in me. It was like I was waiting for something to happen. None of it felt real, you know? I was waiting for the shoe to drop.”

“Liz, I—”

“No, just let me get this out, ok?” I asked. “So when I heard what Pam had said… I jumped at the excuse. Because I’m scared.” I closed my eyes, trying to ward off the tears that were threatening to fall. “I’m scared because… you don’t know me. And I’m scared that, once you’ve been around me on a regular basis, you’ll find out who I really am. And it scares me to death because... because you might not like that person.”

“Hey,” he said softly, wiping away a tear that had fallen onto my cheek. “I do know you. I’ve known you for so long Liz, and I’ve watched you for longer than you can imagine. I know everything about you.” He whispered, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me into his embrace. “And I could never not like that person. I could never dislike you.”

We stood there for a few moments, and I just soaked in the feel of his arms around me. It felt so right. Then he pulled away.

“I should have stopped them,” He said ashamedly, shifting his feet and looking at the ground.

“What?” I asked, completely startled.

“I should have stopped those girls from being mean to you. I could have, but… I don’t know. I didn’t. I’m sorry.”

I shook my head. “No, I should have stopped them, Max. Maybe you had the power to tell them to knock it off, but I don’t think I would have appreciated it. It needed to come from me. And is has,” I grinned. “and I feel great. Although, there are probably repercussions.” I added, slightly worried again.

He laughed. “Then how about this: We face those repercussions. Together.” He took my hand, lacing his fingers with mine.

“Together?” I asked, my concern melting away as I looked into his eyes. “That sounds nice.”

I opened the door to the room, still clinging to his hand. Then we walked back into the madness that most people called high school.

Together.
