They stared at her like she had three heads growing out of her neck. Letting out a nervous laugh, Liz leaned against the wall. Kyle was standing fairly close to her left while the other two people adorned her right. “So, who are you?” She asked casually.

The petite blonde with sparkling green eyes was the first to speak. “I’m Maria. The tall, annoying one’s girlfriend.” She smiled slightly, making Liz feel more comfortable. She assumed this girl was talking about Michael. Liz also assumed that this Maria was an alien too. After a slight pause, Liz turned expectantly to the tall, lanky man.

“Alex, Whitman,” He introduced, sticking out a hand for her to shake. “The super model’s boyfriend."

Liz laughed at the comment, knowing he must have been talking about a certain tall blonde. “So, she’s Max’s sister right?” Liz asked, trying to keep their conversation going.

“Yup,” Alex replied. Well, so much for that. It seemed that neither person was willing to answer with more than a few words.

Liz sat in silence for a few minutes, but after a while the questions that were floating around in her brain came bursting out of her mouth. “So, how did you get here?” she asked nervously; she’d wanted to ask Max that question for a while, but could never gain the courage to do it.

“Get where?” Maria asked blankly. “To the cave? You saw how Max—”

“No, I mean…” Liz trailed off, trying to find a good way to word her question. “I mean, how did you get...here? On this planet?”

Maria’s eyes widened, and then she let out a whoop of laughter that caused Liz to jump. “You think that we’re aliens?” she asked in between giggles. “Maybe our relationships with them would have been easier that way, but we’re human.” She thought a moment. “Well, so are they, they’re just half human. Some weird cloning-leaders-from-another-planet thing.” She said, rolling her eyes as if this were an everyday occurrence.

“Cloning...leaders...what?” Liz asked, utterly confused.

Maria snapped her mouth closed, as if afraid she had let too much slip. “Ah...you’ll have to ask Max. It’s not really our business to tell…”

Liz nodded, but stored Maria’s comment away for later use.

“Wha...what?” Max asked, utterly thrown by this new piece of information.

“I know it sounds crazy; I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” Isabel rushed on, her face pale. “but I keep getting these visions, I guess you could say. I can sense the presence of another one of us, but no matter how much I call out to her, I can never find her.” She paused, looking troubled. “It’s so disoriented, wherever she’s taking me. It’s like looking through a funhouse mirror, nothing makes sense.”

Max was in shock. There was another one of them out there somewhere? His heart constricted. And she was in danger? “So...so you’re saying that this girl...she’s calling out to you?” Max asked slowly.

“Not...not really,” Isabel replied, her brow furrowed. “I don’t think she realizes she’s reaching me. At least, she never comes out in the open when I’m there. Max, what are we going to do?” She asked, sounding lost and confused.

“I…I don’t know,” Max muttered, appalled with himself. He was the one they depended on, how could he not know what to do? Michael and Isabel seemed to be having the same reactions.

“What do you mean, you don’t know?” Isabel pushed, her voice raising. “We have to do something!”

“Yeah. Maxwell, what’s the plan?” Michael added loudly.

“I don’t know, Damnit!” Max yelled, barely aware of the raise in his voice. Both Isabel and Michael opened their mouths furiously, when a new voice sounded from behind them.

“Why don’t you give him a break?” the voice asked harshly, and Max turned to see Liz standing by the entrance. She must have come in because of the loud voices, thought Max, who was grateful for the back up.

“Why don’t you go back out before I make you leave,” Michael threatened, his voice hard.

“Do you have any idea what he went through in there?” Liz asked, seemingly unfazed by Michael’s intimidation routine. She noticed Michael’s mouth open and added impatiently, “Yeah, I know; 'it’s your fault, You're with the FBI, you shouldn’t be talking,'” She said, mocking Michael's voice as she said what he surely would have told her. Then she took a deep breath and continued. “But do you?” She asked, raising her eyebrows as she waited for an answer. When neither said anything, a satisfied expression crossed her features. “That’s what I thought. So you can either: a) Back off and give him at least a day before you start jumping on him, or b) I can give you a detailed list of exactly what went on in that room. I have it in a file in the car."

This seemed to do the trick; the fight seemed to drain out of both Michael and Isabel’s faces. For once, they didn’t turn to Max and insist on an answer.

“Shall we?” She asked, indicating towards the exit. Michael sent her a contemptuous look, but crawled out anyway. Isabel was next, leaving Max and Liz alone.

“Thank you,” He said sincerely, smiling down at her.

She shrugged. “Figured I might as well help you out now, since I’m the one who caused you all that pain…” She drifted off and looked away from him. He moved over to her and tilted her chin up.

“Hey,” he said sternly. “It wasn’t your fault, so stop blaming yourself. I certainly don’t blame you.”

She nodded, but looked unconvinced. Frowning, Max watched her retreat into the central part of the cave. He followed her out and then looked around at everyone.

“Ok, here’s what we’re going to do,” he said, taking his usual commanding tone. “We’re going to stay here for the night, and get some well needed sleep. Tomorrow we can think of everything else.”

“Tell me what I need to know, Max!” His cold, cruel voice echoed throughout the room, making Max shrink in fear. He looked around in vain for some escape route, but all he could see was smooth white wall. The sickening color surrounded Max, threatening to suffocate him.

He reminded himself to be strong, and strengthened his resolve. “I don’t know!” He replied flatly, trying to keeping his voice as emotionless as possible. He wouldn’t give this monster the satisfaction of seeing Max’s fear.

Pierce’s emotions, on the other hand, could be read loud and clear. His face tightened in anger as his teeth bared, hatred gleaming from his eyes. “I didn’t want to have to do this…”

Liar, Max thought wearily, for he could see the excitement in Pierce's eyes as he radioed in for medics. The doors slid open and 4 rushed in, clothed in thick safely suits as if Max had a horrible disease that they could catch.

3 of them grabbed Max and held him down while the other pulled out a lethal looking syringe. Max struggled for his life as he watched the needle drift closer and closer to his neck, but he couldn’t fight them off without his powers.

“NOOOOOOO!” He shouted as the medic jabbed the needle into his flesh.

Liz awoke with a jolt, instantly knowing that something was very wrong. Scurrying into a crouched position, she held her breath and listened to the noises around her. That’s then she heard it. The scream was unnatural, pain and terror filled, and it sent the hairs on the back of her neck on end even as she rushed over to where she knew it was coming from.

“Max!” She shouted, grabbing his shoulders in an effort to wake him up. The look on his face shook her; she had never seen anyone look so broken, so anguished. “Max please, you have to wake up!” She yelled, starting to shake his shoulders. By now the other were awake, and she was suddenly surrounded by Max’s friends.

“Get out of the way,” His sister yelled, trying to shove Liz away. Liz held her position and shook off Isabel, her concentration solely on Max. She continued to shake him, but he was still caught in the dream and began to fight her. His large fist came out of nowhere and slammed directly into her cheek, causing her vision to momentarily dim with the pain. Doing her best to ignore this, she leaned in close to him.

“Max. Max wake up. You’re not there anymore, it’s over,” She continued to speak in a soft, soothing voice, and eventually Max’s eyelashes flitted open. The glazed look in his honey eyes showed her that he still wasn’t fully aware of his surroundings, so she continued to talk to him.

“Oh God,” He whispered, placing his head in his hands. His body began to shake with suppressed sobs, and Liz hugged him closed while he cried.

“It’s alright now,” She whispered, running her fingers gently through his hair. “You’re ok now.”
