Chapter Sixteen B:

Liz glared at Zan as soon as her mom disappeared through her now open room door.

"Now," she said pausing, " what happened to my laptop?"

"Well," he began, trying to find a way to admit to his curiosity without being subject to any more Liz-glares. "I was... at loose ends here in your room by myself. Alone," he felt compelled to emphasize, after all, he was always a believer in the best defense being a good offense, "and there it was, and I was... curious."

He added a sheepish smile at the end, he hadn't studied warfare and diplomacy since the cradle for nothing.

Liz tried to hold on to her anger, but the truth was that she had left him to his own devices for way too long. She had heard of what happened to his train--and other toys and electronics over the years--during their long correspondence.

She sighed. She really should have known better than to leave anything delicate--and expensive--in his presence. She looked at the coglomeration of fused plastic, wires and computer chips at her feet. "Well, at least undo that," she said pointing at it, "I think we'll need to call in reinforcements."

Chapter Sixteen C:

"What happened to it?" Alex said looking down at the various parts of Liz's laptop no longer congealed together but rather scattered about.

"My little cousin was here yesterday and he wanted to know how it worked," Liz explained.

Alex shook his head and smiled thinking of his own childhood spent taking things apart and putting them back together. Of course, he thought, the kid didn't bother to do that. "It might take me a few hours. I can get it back to you tomorrow at school."

"Thank you so much, Alex. Let me get you a drink from the Crashdown. What would you like an Alien Blast?" She heard a snort behind her where she knew Zan to be and covered it up with a cough as she walked out the door.

"That would be great," Alex replied following her out, "no one does alien-themed food like the Crashdown."

Vilandra looked down at the reading material, they got from the Granolith. There was a lot of it.

"This might take weeks, you know," she told Rath looking over at him flipping through a few of volumes.

"Not if we speed-read," he said turning yet another page.

"Looking at the pictures does not count as speed-reading," she retorted, "besides, we have to learn the language in order to blend in. You heard what the Granolith said, they are not ready to know of life on other planets."

"I'm not very concerned about these Earthlings, all I am concerned about is retrieving Zan. Besides, aren't these supposed to help us learn the language?" he said pointing at the language-acquisition tapes the Granolith had provided.

"Yes, but I think we should take care not to upset the locals. We don't know how long it will take to find Zan, and, as the warfare specialist you should know, that the best type of battle is the one you don't have to wage."

Rath did not bother to acknowledge her remark.

"Some of their girls are pretty hot," he commented looking at yet another picture.

"Men," Vi muttered shaking her head.

Chapter Seventeen A:

That boy is here again, Nancy thought to herself as she opened the door to Liz's room a week later. It seemed that everytime she saw her daughter nowadays she had that boy attached to her hip.

"I brought you kids something to drink," she said setting down the two mugs of cherry soda she brought up from the Crashdown.

"Thanks, mom," Liz answered with a slight smirk, not fooled for a minute. Her mom had been finding reasons to unexpectedly "drop by" her room for a week now.

"You guys hard at work?" she asked looking pointedly down at the books that looked to not have been touched in the two hours since she had last visited. Yes, she thought, that was the same constellation the two had been studying she she had brought up the Saturn rings.

"It's the Whilwind Galaxy," Liz explained seeing the direction of her gaze, "one of the farthest we are still able to see with our naked eye."

She looked at Zan quickly and bit her lip. It was now or never. "Max and I were hoping we would be able to see it from out in the desert tonight."

"Oh." Nancy said eloquently in a tone exclusive to mothers.

"It would be purely academic," Liz said quickly recognizing the look in her eyes.

"And it will stay that way until you tell me who else is going along as a chaperone." Nancy responded, knowing full well it would not be the stars they'd be studying.

"Mom, I'm sixteen years old. I don't need a babysitter," Liz said, "please."

"I didn't say babysitter. I said chaperone. "

"But mom--"

"No."

Nancy turned around and made her way out of the room . Leaving the door open.

Chapter Seventeen B:

"... days are about as long. We have three moons, though--all different colors." Zan paused in his description of Antar. They had been talking about it all afternoon.

"I would love to go," Liz said wistfully. And the more he talked about it, the more she wanted to go and experience it alongside him.

"We'll go." Zan stated. No hesitancy. No question.

Liz sighed as she looked over to her alarm clock. "It's almost 9PM, you should probably 'go'."

"Yeah," he said, "I don't think your mom likes me very much."

Liz laughed low, "I wonder how she'd feel about you if she knew you were sleeping in my bed."

Zan did not laugh. He did not smile. He seemed, in fact, frozen in place.

Liz turned around slowly, almost afraid of what she'd see there.

"Hi Mom."

"The Granolith still does not think we are ready," Vilondra said as she watched Rath pack for their trip that night.

"We have to be." Rath said, not even bothering to turn around.

"But what if--" she paused, "what if something goes wrong? No one will know where to find us."

"We have to do this on our own, you know this," Rath said prepring himself for a familiar argument, "everyday we leave Zan down there on his own is a day that someone else might find out where he is hiding and attack him. We can't risk it." And we never know who we can trust, he added to himself. There had been to many leaks lately. "Better go get ready, princess."
