I don't want to get defensive now because my son sounds like he might actually open up to me but I stiffen up a bit. "In case living with me all your life hasn't clued you in yet, Chris, let me just admit that I'm not a subtle kind of guy. Unless something is pretty obvious, I miss signs. Just ask your mother. I think she's finally starting to learn that after all these years of being with me. I'm more of a take charge kind of guy and do something as soon as I finally get hit in the face with it. So what is it that I've been oblivious to?" This is hard for me to admit to him. I hate that this is one of my biggest faults. It's what Maria and I fought about for years. Why couldn't I be more clued in like Max? Why did I have to be so hotheaded instead of calm and collected and a thinker like Max?

Oh god! I hope they hurry! I started shifting my weight from foot to foot.

Occ: Corina, do you want Roxie to get caught or no. I don't care either way.

Whoa! Where did that come from? His words hurt but I never let people know when my feelings have been hurt. I choose to start yelling back. "What are you talking about? I've raised you, Chris! I know you're a good kid who usually follows the rules...that you look up to Max because you think he's such a great guy. I also know that you happen to be in love with Roxie and you're afraid of telling her because you're afraid that she doesn't feel the same way."

I've always been jealous of how Chris looks up to Max. He's my son! I mean, even if my other kids hate me, I can get a kick out of the fact that Angel gets his artistic abilities from me and that Leo is the bad ass like I was. I can relate to them. I just can't seem to connect to Chris and it hurts like hell because I love him to death.

Okay, I totally screwed up now. Not only was I wrong about something I was so sure of, but I hurt Dad.

I somehow managed to take some of the wind out of his sails. Getting somewhat nostalgic, I say quietly, "I remember how you were the only one of my kids that I could get to fall asleep as a kid by singing Metallica to you or by quoting "Ulysses" to you. I know that you get into more fights with your brothers than you would ever admit to and that most of them are started by them because they're more hotheaded than I was at their age."

I can't hold out much longer! I'm dancing from one foot to the other and slip on one of Chris' shoes. I fall into the wall and cover my mouth to keep from crying out in surprise. Oh god! I hope they didn't hear that.

I ingnore the sound from the closet. I really hope she can hold it.

"Accually, I've read Uylesses three times. Most of the fights with Angel and Leo start because Leo can't keep his mouth shut, and Angel just has a beyond repair bad temper." I explain.

I hear something from the closet but I can't help but feel like my son just hit me. "Well, then, I guess that means you don't need me at all anymore. Is that what you're trying to say?" I am impressed that he has read "Ulysses" 3 times though. I lost count of how many times I've read it.

I was holding my breath and let it out in relief when the door isn't yanked open. Whew! Maybe they didn't hear that afterall.
