When sorrows come...M/L Teen/Mature part9 2/16/06 [WIP]

Post by James »

Hey everyone
I know it has been a while since I have posted but I had some big time computer troubles and I lost some of my work. To you other authors out there you know how painfull that can be not to be able to retrieve your work :-(
Anyway, I have most of my stories back now and backed up this time :-) and anyway I am back to writing. I began working on this story while helping a friend through some ruff times she is going through. It just came to me and some how it all began to take on a life of its own so I thought I would share it here. I hope you will like it. IT is a Max and Liz love story that will be bittersweet at times.

When sorrows come…

Liz sat in her bedroom window as tears streamed down her face. The rain had finally stopped but she still felt miserable inside. How could her mother do this to her, how could she destroy her life this way. Wasn’t bad enough that she ripped her life apart by divorcing her father but now she was talking about remarrying. She wiped her eyes and sniffled in just as a knock sounded at her bedroom door, “Elizabeth open this door we need to talk.” her mother called out to her.

“I have said everything that I have to say on the subject.” Liz called back.

“Don’t take that tone with me young lady; I am still your mother! Now get over here and open this door now.” Nancy Parker yelled through the door.

“Fine.” Liz yelled back as she stomped over and unlocked the door.

Nancy Parker took one look at the tears in her daughter’s eyes and her tone softened, “Look honey I know this is hard for you but really it is for the best, you’ll see. Phillip really is a wonderful man.”

“So is daddy!” was all she said as she turned her back to her mom and walked back over to stare out the window.

“Yes of course your dad is a wonderful man too, but if you could just give Phillip a chance you might grow to like him.” Nancy encouraged her daughter.

“I don’t want to give him a chance mother, I want my family back.” Liz told her trying not to scream.

“Elizabeth I was miserable being married to your father, I was never happy, I only stayed as long as I did for your sake.” She said but added when she saw Liz roll her eye “Look you may not understand why I left your father but one day you will and well until then your just going have to get used to the changes that are going to happen weather you like it or not.” Her mom told her.

Liz turned around and laughed, “That’s a laugh mom when have you ever taken my feelings into consideration, when have you ever taken anyone’s feelings into consideration for that matter? Daddy didn’t want a divorce, I heard him mom, I heard him begging you to stay, promising to do whatever you wanted, and to be whatever you wanted just to get you stay and you didn’t say a word!”

“Elizabeth Parker you had no right to listen in on your father and I that was a private conversation that didn’t involve you.” Nancy snapped at her daughter her own temper flaring.

Liz began to laugh hysterically, “didn’t concern me, how can you say that? How can you think that, ripping my life apart, taking me away from my friends and my father moving me here to Roswell, New Mexico didn’t concerned me?” Liz ran over and grabbed her jacket and headed towards the door.

Her mom grabbed her arm and pulled her back, “I did what I did for you!”

Liz pulled her arm free, “No mother you did it for you and you alone!” Then she ran out of the house slamming the door as she went.

Moments later the phone rang, Nancy let out a heavy sigh as she picked up the phone, “Hello?”

“Hello darling… so how did it go?” Phillip asked.

“Well let’s see she screamed, yelled, and ran out of the house crying, all and all I say it went pretty well.” Nancy told her fiancé.

“Give her some time Nancy remember she is only 15 years old, it’s a tuff age.” Phillip told her.

“I know, I just wish she could be more understanding that’s all.” Nancy explained. “So how did you kids take the news?”

“They haven’t come home yet I will tell them after dinner. Nancy this is going to be fine, trust me, we will get through this.” Phillip reassured her as he hung up the phone.

“Tell us what dad?” Max said as he walked into the living room.

“Oh Max, I didn’t here you come in…where is Isabel?” Philip asked.

“She went upstairs, so what is it you have to tell us?” Max asked again impatient for the answer.

He walked over and stood at the bottom of the stairs, “Isabel, can you come down here please?” Phillip called.

Max sat down on the sofa and waited as his sister joined them, “Alright what’s this big news?”

Phillip walked over and poured himself a drink, “Well you both know I have been seeing Nancy Parker for some time now and well I have asked her to marry me.”

Max felt like he had just been hit with a ton of bricks, he shook his head in disbelief, “Marry, you can’t be serious!”

Phillip shook his head, “Maxwell I have been dating Nancy for awhile now and I love her very much, I want to make a home with her, and I want us to be a family.”

“A family, what about mom she was our family?” Max said as he felt his anger grow in intensity.

“Maxwell there is not a day that doesn’t go by that I don’t think about your mother but since she died I have been very lonely and sad, and well Nancy helps me not to feel sad any more. Now look you’re not a little boy, you’re old enough to understand that life goes on. Mom would not want any of us to stop living, now would she?” Phillip asked his son softly.

Max shook his head in frustration trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall. “No dad she wouldn’t want that.” He said softly.

“Alright then, now I want you both to meet her and her daughter, they will be coming over this weekend for dinner. Isabel I am sure Nancy and Elizabeth would love to hear your thoughts on the wedding.” Phillip told her.

Isabel smiled, “Yeah sure dad.” She said as she kissed her dad on the cheek and congratulated him.

Max was just about to leave the room when Phillip called out to him, “Max that’s not all I have to say.”

He stopped and turned to face his father, “What is it?”

“Well since Nancy and her daughter will be moving in we will need a bigger house so I am putting this house up for sale. I meet with the realtor tomorrow.” Phillip told them.

“No you can’t do this, you can’t sell this house! Mom loved this house.” Max yelled unable to control his anger any longer.

“Maxwell Evens do not take that tone with me do you understand? This is my decision and it has been made, you will do as you’re told is that clear!” his dad told him.

Max shook his head and then headed upstairs. He couldn’t believe what his father was doing. How could he betray his mother like this? She had only past away a year ago, her life cut short when a drunk driver ran her down in a cross walk. Max lie on his bed and stared at the ceiling as the tears formed in his eyes. He shook his head, “That’s just fine dad, you can get remarried and sell moms home like it didn’t even matter but that does not mean that I have to like it.” He mumbled to himself.

Liz ran to the nearest pay phone and called her father collect, “daddy, oh daddy!” she cried into the phone.

“Lizzie what is it? What’s wrong?” he asked worried over the sound of his daughter crying voice.

“Daddy she is getting remarried!” Liz cried into the phone.

“I know baby, she called me this morning, I am so sorry sweetie.” He told her.

“Daddy she can’t do this she can’t…I hate her I will never forgive her for this ever!” Liz cried harder.

“Now Elizabeth that is not how I raised you to speak about your mother.” He said in a stern voice, then added more softly, “Lizzie I know this hurts and its hard for you to understand and I am not going to pretend to insult your intelligence by telling you everything will be just wonderful, its going to take time for you to adjust to all these changes, but I will tell you that I love you very much and no matter what happens you will always be my baby girl ok.” Jeffery Parker assured his daughter.

Liz sniffled in and dried her eyes, “Ok daddy.”

“We may not always like the curves that life throws at us, but we keep on going right? He said trying to sound positive for his daughter’s sake.

Liz smiled for the first time in several days, “Yes daddy that’s right, we keep on going.” She repeated his words softly.

“That’s my girl, now you’re still coming to see me this weekend right?” Jeff asked her.

“Yes I bought my ticket just this morning, I will remind mom but I am looking forward to spending the week with you.” Liz told her dad then she said good bye and slowly hung up the phone and let out a heavy sigh, she knew that she had no choice but to go back home and accept the situation. She had been doing a lot of that lately, since her parents divorce and her mother’s abrupt decision to move to Roswell just a little over six months ago. Liz hated it here; her life had been filled with so much hurt since they moved. Not only was she now several hundred miles away from her dad, but she missed her two best friends Maria and Alex as well, leaving the two of them was like leaving a part of her self behind. She met Maria the first day of kindergarten and Alex on the second day. They were all in the same class but Alex was to afraid to come to school the first day so his mom waited until she could take off work and stay with him. Liz and Maria made it there mission to help him get past his fear and in a few short days he had completely forgotten about his mom. The teachers nicknamed them the three musketeers because they were always together. Liz laughed as she walked home thinking about her two friends, they had been together through every grade since, well until this year when her mother pulled her out of school and moved her here for no reason. Liz walked back into the house and was just about to go into her room when he r mother called her, “Elizabeth, is that you?”

“Yes mom it’s me…” she called back.

“Come in here will you please?” Nancy Parker called out to her daughter from in her room.

Liz let out a heavy sigh and walked into her mom’s room, “Yes, what is it?”

“I know that you were planning on spending this week with your dad but you won’t be able to go after all.” Nancy informed her daughter.

“What …why not!” Liz asked her anger flaring all over again.

“Because Phillip has arranged for us to have dinner to meet his family on Saturday and then we will be spending some time with him and his children over the spring break.” Nancy told her.

“No… that’s not fair, I haven’t seen daddy in over 6 months, and he took the whole week off of work. You can’t just cancel now.” Liz shook her head in disbelief.

“I can and I am, look Elizabeth, we are going to be a new family now and you are going to be a part of that so you better just accept it. Now we will be looking for a new house next week with Phillip and he really wanted you to be there to help pick out where we will live.” Her mom told her.

“I don’t care where you live and this is not going to be my new family, this is something you want not me!” Liz yelled.

Nancy shook her head, “Elizabeth you will come and be polite or I will not allow you go and see your father over summer break is that clear!” she warned her.

Liz didn’t say anything she just turned and walked away. “Fine then I will stay, but I am spending the entire summer, all 3 months with daddy!” she called out as she slammed her bedroom door.

Thanks for leaving some feed back. It was really awesome hearing from some of you again ;-) I realize that some may not like this story but I hope you will give it a chance. Anyway on to the story...

The Meeting...

The last few days at school flew by, Liz could hardly believe it was already Saturday. She stayed in bed most of the day feeling too depressed to get up and do much. It was the sound of her moms voice coming down the hall that made her finally get up and out of bed, “Elizabeth, if you think this attitude is going to make me change my mind about your going your wrong, now get up and get ready, we are leaving in a another hour to meet with Phillip and his family.”

Liz sat up as her mom walked through her door, “I am going to get ready.” She told her.

“What are you planning on wearing?” Nancy asked her daughter.

“I don’t know probably my jeans and a tee shirt.” Liz told her as she headed for her a bathroom.

Nancy walked over to her closet and began rummaging through Liz clothes, “I don’t want you dressing sloppy, I will leave out your clothes that I want you to wear.”

“You can forget that, I am 15 mother, just a two months away from 16 you are not choosing my clothes for me.” Liz told her in no uncertain terms.

Nancy looked over at her daughter and let out a small sigh, “Alright, just please I want to make a good impression so please pick something nice to wear.” She said as she went over to answer the telephone. Liz shook her head, and was just about to go into take her shower when she heard her mother say, “Yes that’s right Phillip Evens and Nancy Parker. Please let her know that we are eager to begin looking for a house right away, this week if it’s possible.”

Liz walked back out from the bathroom and waited as her mom hung up the phone, “Did you say Evens, Phillips last name is Evens?” She asked suddenly feeling very nervous.

Nancy turned around to see Liz in her bathroom doorway, “Yes that’s Phillips last name, I can’t believe you don’t know that I have only mentioned it a hundred times in the last few months.” She said feeling a bit frustrated.

“Right… so his kids, what are their names?” she asked.

“Why all this sudden interest in Phillip and his children a few moments ago I practically had to drag you from your bed and now your all curious?” Nancy asked her.

“Mom just tell me what their names are?” Liz asked growing impatient.

“Isabel and Maxwell, you may actually know them, I think they are going to the same school as you do.” Nancy told her as she went into the bathroom.

Liz’s heart sunk, Maxwell Evens was Phillips son, of course she thought because that would make her life a complete tragedy so of course it would have to be. Maybe they weren’t the same person, maybe by some small infinitesimal chance she would walk into the Evens home tonight and meet an entirely different boy then the one she had a huge crush on in her English lit class. One could hope for a miracle she thought to herself as she went back to her room and got ready. She wore her new jeans and her soft white button up top and dark green sweater over it. She fixed her hair and was just finishing up when her mom came back in to get her, “Oh thank you honey, you look so pretty. I really like that sweater where did you get it?” she asked as they headed for the car.

“Daddy sent it to me.” Was all Liz said.

Isabel was combing her hair when Max walked into her room, “So how long do you think I have to hang around for this little get together before I can cut out and meet up with Michael and Kyle?” he asked as he sat down on her bed.

“Oh Max you better not try that or dad is going to freak out, this is a big deal for him tonight.” She told him as she applied her lip gloss.

“Yeah well it isn’t a big deal to me…in fact I don’t even want to meet Nancy or her daughter.” Max told her sounding very irritated.

Isabel stood up and walked over to him, “Come on Max, I know this is hard on you, it’s hard on all of us, but dad does deserve to be happy again.”

“Isabel it has only been a year since mom died, one year…how can he already be over that. I mean if I fell in love with someone you can bet I wouldn’t be dating within six months of her death and then remarrying.” Max said feeling frustrated.

“Well dad is different, besides he is really happy and I want him to be happy again so even though it’s hard, and I miss mom, I want to make the best of this situation and you should too.” Isabel told him.

“Sorry but I just can’t do that, I can’t betray mom that way…” Max said as he left the room.

Liz stood in the living room quietly as her mother greeted her fiancé with a warm hug and kiss. Phillip smiled as he reached out his hand toward Liz, “Well hello Elizabeth, how are you doing?”

Liz didn’t say anything she just politely shook his hand. Nancy shook her head, “Elizabeth, Phillip asked you a question?”

Liz lowered her eyes and mumbled softly, “I’m fine thanks.”

“I’m glad to hear it, well if you two ladies would like to have a seat I will go and see if I can hurry Max and Isabel down so we can have some dinner.” Phillip told them then left to head upstairs.

Nancy took the opportunity to remind Elizabeth of their deal, “Look you promised to behave so I don’t want anymore attitude from you alright.”

“Like I had any choice in the matter, you refuse to let me see dad this summer if I didn’t come and do this.” Liz reminded her.

“That’s not true Elizabeth and you know it, I merely said that if you wanted to be able to spend the summer with your father then you had better start having an improvement in your attitude, there is a big difference.” Nancy told her. Liz didn’t say anything instead she smiled and waited for the night to end so she could go home and lock herself in her room.

“Elizabeth…this is my daughter Isabel, and my son Max, you might know one another from school, I think you all go to the same high school.” Phillip said as he walked back into the room with Max and Isabel following behind him.

Liz looked up and at once her heart sank, “Oh well so much for miracles.” she thought to herself, but it was him, Maxwell Evens the only boy that had caught her attention since she moved here. He was so cute and she loved his dark hair and hazel green eyes, there always seemed to be a certain sadness that she somehow felt she could connect to in them. She smiled a bit but he didn’t even look her way, just like in honors English class, he still didn’t know she existed. Liz forced her gaze away from Max and over to Isabel, she was beautiful, everyone at school knew who Isabel Evens was, with her long blonde hair and gorgeous figure. She was a year older then both Max and Liz.

“Hello Elizabeth, it’s nice to meet you.” Isabel offered politely. Max just waved and walked over to sit down on the sofa.

Liz smiled, “Call me Liz, I don’t really go by Elizabeth.” She said softly.

“Oh really, that’s too bad, I like the name Elizabeth, it was my mothers name.” Phillip told her almost sounding a little hurt.

“Well she likes to shorten her name up for school but we have always called her Elizabeth at home.” Nancy told them.

“That’s not true; daddy always calls me Lizzie…only you call me Elizabeth.” Liz said just loud enough for Max to hear but not anyone else.

“Well how about we have some dinner and get to know each other,” Phillip said as everyone followed him into the dinning room. Liz sat down next to her mom and across from Max. The house was beautiful and judging by the amount of antiques and expensive furniture she figured that Phillip Evens probably was a wealthy man. Her suspicions were confirmed when an older woman dressed in a maid’s uniform came out from the kitchen and served their dinner.

Nancy greeted the woman, “Sara, this is my daughter Elizabeth, darling this is Sara; she works for Phillip and runs the house hold for him, and does a wonderful job too I might add.”

Sara smiled, “Thank you Nancy, that is very kind of you to say, and it is nice to meet you too Elizabeth. I look forward to getting to know you both and please if you have any favorites that you like for dinner please let me know and I will make sure to incorporate them into the menu.”

Liz didn’t say too much she just smiled politely. She wasn’t sure she liked the idea of a maid, she actually enjoyed cooking and helping out with the chores around the house. Some of her fondest memories where when her and her dad would spend Saturday morning making pancakes and then cleaning up together so they could have the afternoons free to take in a movie or go to the mall. She knew her mom would feel right at home with the new situation, she always complained about having to do house work and she rarely ever cooked, her dad did most of the cooking. She tried hard not to stare over in Max’s direction, several times she thought she caught him looking her way but she wasn’t positive. They all ate in awkward silence until Phillip asked, “So Elizabeth how do you like going to school here, your mother said that you’re a straight A student, even taking classes above your level.”

“Yes I am taking a few honor classes.” Liz answered politely.

“Your being modest darling, actually Elizabeth has a full load of honors classes and is on track to graduate early.” Nancy bragged about her daughters academic skills.

“Really that’s wonderful; Max here is in an honors English class. He could have taken honors Math, history and science but chose not to.” Phillip said sounding a bit disappointed.

Isabel laughed, “Yes well dad he wanted to have a life not be stuck inside a book all day.” Liz smiled and wondered if the remark was meant as a jab towards her.

“Now Isabel there is nothing wrong with being a serious student, you and Maxwell both could take a lesson from Elizabeth’s dedication and work a little a harder.” Phillip told her.

“I hear that your birthday is soon, you’ll be turning sixteen, Max just turned sixteen not to long ago, we will have to get you a car of your own to drive. Isabel and Max each have a car, I found that it’s just not practical to have teenagers share a car.” Phillip told them.

Nancy leaned over and whispered something to Phillip then turned to Liz, “I think we should have a sweet sixteen party for you too, you can invite all your friends.” Liz just shook her head that was the last thing she wanted was a party but she knew there would be no stopping her mother once her mind was made up. The rest of the evening dragged on and Liz sat back quietly as her mother and Isabel talked over wedding ideas and made plans. By the end of the evening it was decided that both she and Isabel would stand up for Nancy, with Liz being the maid of honor and Isabel a brides maid. Max of course was to be Phillips best man. The wedding would be held in just a month so they were going to be very busy with fittings and parties. Phillip seemed eager to have all of his friends and associates meet her, something Liz was not to crazy about. It was well past nine when she had enough, “Mother I don’t mean to be rude but I really do need to get home and get back to work on my English paper.”

“Oh alright then, I better take her home.” Nancy said as she kissed Phillip goodnight. Liz was walking towards the door when she heard her mother calling her, “Oh Elizabeth just wait for me in the car a moment Phillip needs to speak with me a moment.”

“Fine mom but please don’t be to long.” Liz said as she closed the door and headed toward the car. She was just about to open the door when she heard the sound of footsteps from behind her, turning to see who it was she was shocked to see Max headed towards her. Feeling completely awkward she didn’t say anything instead she fidgeted with her keys.
Max motioned for her to follow him, “I am taking you home, looks like your mom was not quite ready to leave.” He said sounding annoyed.

Liz shook her head in exasperation and followed him over to his car. “I can walk home its not that far.” She said sounding annoyed.

“Yeah right then I get chewed out for not taking you, just get in.” he said as he unlocked the door.

“I don’t know why you had to leave right then anyway, that English paper is not even due until the Friday after break, I’m in the same class you know.” Max told her still sounding very annoyed.

Liz just shook her head, “Well I don’t like to wait until the last minute to do my work, I like to put just a little bit more effort into it then that.” She told him.

“What are you saying that I do not put the same amount of effort into my work that you do?” Max asked her.

“I think your grades reflect how much effort you put into your work and that’s fine if C’s and low B’s make you happy.” She told him.

“Whatever!” Max said in frustration, “Well we can’t all have straight A’s, at least I am not rude, thinking I am above everyone in the classroom!”

“I never said I was above anyone else, I…” She started to say only to be interrupted.

“Yeah right that’s why you haven’t talked to anyone and you are always hanging out by yourself.” Max snapped.

She didn’t say anything, it was true that she hadn’t made any new friends but it wasn’t because she was a snob or because she thought she was better, it was because she didn’t want to be there, she missed Maria and Alex and most of all she missed her father terribly. She felt like her whole life was turned upside down, but he would never understand that. She sat the rest of the way in silence except for some vague directions on how to get to her house. Max felt angry with her, with her mom and his dad, he hated that they were moving into a new house and the fact that his dad was marrying Nancy Parker. “So you live on this side of town …that explains a lot.” He said sarcastically as they drove into her neighborhood.

Liz didn’t miss the meaning behind what he said, “And what is that suppose to mean exactly.”

“Nothing, just that it explains why you and your mom are so eager for this marriage to happen, that’s all.” Max told her.

“What are you talking about?” Liz demanded her eyes flashing with anger.

“It’s obvious you and your mom are not too wealthy and my dad is a good finical catch for the two of you.” He said in a cold voice.

Liz laughed and shook her head, “Oh my gosh now who is being a snob…”

“Pointing out the truth, does not make me a snob.” Max told her.

“Truth well for your information nothing could be further from the truth. Our house may not be in as nice a neighborhood as yours but that doesn’t mean that we are poor, besides I am not eager for this marriage to happen so that blows your theory right there.” Liz told him in no uncertain terms.

“Sure your not, I bet your little spoiled girl routine of saying nothing all night was just an act. You’re probably already all packed and ready to move in, well I am warning you, my dad may be fooled by you and your mother but I’m not.” Max snapped at her.

Liz shook her head, “Unbelievable, stop the car!” she yelled at him.

Max shook his head, “I’m not stopping the car, I said I would drive you home and that’s what I fully intend to do.” Liz waited as he pulled up to the stop light then opened the car door and got out. Max was so surprised by her action that it took him several seconds to figure out what had happened. After driving through the intersection he pulled up along the side and got out of the car and ran after her, “Get back into the car.” He told her in a serious voice.

Liz shook her head, “I don’t have to do what you tell me, and I don’t have to sit and be insulted either.” She said as she kept on walking.

Max grabbed her by the arm and pulled her back around to face him, “Look I am not going to get a months grounding just so you can throw your temper tantrum, maybe you don’t like what I had to say because it’s the truth!” Max told her.

Liz eyes narrowed, “Let go of my arm right now,” when he didn’t release her arm she glared at him, “I am not going to say a word to your father or my mother so let go of my arm and leave me alone!”

“Fine have it your way!” he said then walked back over to his car and drove off. Liz was angry she was actually shaking, her eyes filled with tears, how dare he speak to her in such an awful way. He didn’t even know her and he had already judge her to be this terrible person. She felt hurt inside and she wasn’t even really sure why, it wasn’t as if she and Max Evens had ever spoken, but a small part of her had hoped that maybe she might find a friend in him, seems that was all ruined now too.

Max watched Liz through the rear view mirror as she walked down the street in the opposite direction from him. He checked for traffic and then flipped a u turn deciding to follow her from a distance, it wasn’t that he really cared about her but he just didn’t want it on his conscious if something happened he told himself. He followed her all the way to her house staying just far enough back as not to be noticed, once she was safely inside he drove off, still feeling angry inside. Why did she have to be Nancy Parkers daughter, he was so shocked to see Liz standing in his living room when he walked in early in the evening. He slammed his hand against the steering wheel. The truth was he had thought about Elizabeth Parker on more then one occasion since she enrolled in his English class. He first noticed her beautiful brown eyes as she stood in the front of the class as Mr., Harding introduced her to everyone as the new student. She was pretty enough but she seemed shy and kept so much to herself that he was intrigued by her. She wasn’t like the other girls that he had dated in the past, for one she actually had a brain and two she was more the girl next door type then the usual hot cheerleader girls that he went with. He thought about the first time he had heard her voice it was so soft and sweet, made him feel completely at ease. Mr. Harding had asked her to read aloud for the class from the Shakespeare play Hamlet. Max felt truly moved as she read the words, “When sorrows come, they come not as single spies, but in battalions". He remembered thinking that it was almost as if she truly understood what it was to feel true sorrow something he could relate too. He shook his head it didn’t matter now, she was the enemy her and her mother both and he was going to do what ever he had to, to make sure her life was miserable!

Liz unlocked the door and went straight to her room. She didn’t waste anytime; she picked up the phone and called Maria, “Hey.”

“I have been waiting for you to call, so how was it; as bad as you feared?” Maria asked.

Liz sniffled in and told her everything including about how terribly Max had treated her on the ride home, “Yeah so I ended up just walking the rest of the way home.” She finished telling her.

“OH Liz I am so sorry, that sucks!” Maria told her.

“Yeah it really does, big time!” Liz laughed half heartily.

“Well you know what it’s completely his loss because you are awesome and he will never get a chance to know that now!” Maria told her.

“Its really all for the best, I mean even if he had been nice, that would just have made it all the harder, think about it I could hardly date my step brother, that would be so weird!” Liz told her trying to convince her self that what she was saying was true.

“Oh Liz I really am sorry, I know this whole thing has been really hard on you. Is your mom going to let you come home for summer still?” Maria asked.

“I hope so; it’s been months since I have seen you or Alex. I was so looking forward to this week with you guys and my dad but she said this was more important.” Liz explained.

“Hang in there ok…” Maria encouraged her. “I know its going to be hard but maybe if you do what she wants then she will still let you come for the summer.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Liz said letting out a heavy sigh before saying good bye and hanging up the phone.

Max pulled his car up into Michael’s driveway, he still felt angry over the course of events that had unfolded and wasn’t exactly ready to go back home to the happy couple and all their wedding plans. Max was just about to knock on the door when Michael opened it, “so what are you doing here? I thought you had a family thing tonight?” he asked as he let Max in.

“Well its over.” Was all Max said as he walked in and sat down on the sofa.

Michael could tell by his friend’s mood that things must have gone badly, “Alright then, do you want to tell me about it or just watch some TV.”

“There isn’t much to say, she was pretty much what I thought she would be, hanging all over my dad, him gushing all over her like my mother never existed made me sick inside.” Max told him as he leaned his head back and closed his eyes.

“What about the daughter, I thought you were supposed to meet your new step sister tonight too?” Michael asked as he sat down in the chair across from Max.

“That was a total disaster, turns out Nancy is that new girls mom. I couldn’t believe it when I walked into the room and saw her standing there.” Max said as he ran his hands through his hair.

Michael shook his head, “you mean that brunette you have been talking non stop about for the last few months, Liz?”

“Yeah, Liz Parker is going to be my new step sister.” Max said feeling frustrated all over again.

“Oh man that sucks, so does that make her off limits now?” Michael asked as he got up and went into the kitchen and grabbed them both a soda.

“It doesn’t matter I wasn’t all that interested in her anyway.” Max said trying to sound convincing.

“Yeah ok.” Michael said as he tossed him a soda and sat back down. “I say to heck with what your old man does if you like her then you go for it anyway, what the worse that can happen?”

“My dad will kill me and throw me out of the house that’s what, besides I was a royal jerk to her she probably hates me.” Max said more to himself then out loud.
He shook his head and let out a heavy sigh, “You know what I just want to forget the whole thing, put a movie in and let’s forget about it.

Nancy wrapped her arms around Phillips neck and smiled, “Well that wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“She didn’t seem like she liked me very much.” He said as he pulled her closer to him.

“Oh Phillip she will come around, just give it time ok.” She told him.

“I hope so.” He said as he leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips.

A House isn’t always a home…

Liz had even more reason for not wanting to go along on this house hunting expedition but knew she had no choice. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and smiled, she decided that even though she no longer liked Maxwell Evens she was going to make sure that he regretted the way he treated her. She wore her favorite soft pink tank top and hipster jeans. After she finished fixing her hair she glanced over at her clock and headed down stairs before her mom came up yelling at her. Liz found Nancy sitting in the living room waiting for her, “Well your ready on time….that is a pleasant change.” She said in a surprised voice.

“Lets go mom, I want to drive over to Phillips house, I need some more practice.” She said as she grabbed her keys and wallet.

“Alright, just let me get my purse.” Nancy said as she hurried to follow Liz to the car.

Max was still in a foul mood, something that Isabel was quickly getting tired of. “What is your problem?”

“Nothing, I just don’t want to go look at houses with Dad and pretend that we are all going to be one big happy family that’s all.” Max told her.

“Grow up already Max dad is just trying to include us and Liz because he knows how hard this is on us all. You should stop being so selfish and think about someone else for once!” Isabel told him.

Max got up and headed out to his car. He was just about to leave when Kyle and Michael drove up, “Hey Maxwell come on get in we are going over to the look at a motorcycles, and Michael finally got his dad to agree to let him have one.”

Max walked over to the car, “I can’t, I have to do the family thing again today.”

“Oh right the whole house hunting thing, I forgot; well at least it won’t be a total wash you get to spend some more time with the cute little number from your English class.” Kyle teased him.

“Thanks but no thanks, she may be cute but she is a real snob.” Max told them.

Kyle shook his head, “Man who cares, she is a total babe, and besides just think how you could use her to your advantage.”

Max shook his head, puzzled by what Kyle said, “How could I use her to my advantage?”

“Oh man all you have to do is get her to fall for you then dump her, you know break her heart. I bet she will be so upset she takes off and then mommy goes running after her, solves your problem right there.” Kyle told him.

Michael laughed, “Kyle man you are one sick individual, I mean really who thinks like that?” he said.

“I know what can I say, it’s a gift.” Kyle joked.

Max laughed, “Yeah right, I will see you guys later.” He said as he walked back towards the house. He was just about to go in when Liz and her mom pulled up, “Hey” he waved at the two of them. He thought about what Kyle had said but then he dismissed it; no one deserved to be treated that way, no matter what, besides he was still feeling guilty over the way he had treated Liz the other night. Max opened the door and called out to his dad, “Liz and her mom are here.”

“OK, Isabel lets go the realtor is waiting to meet with us...” Phillip called out.

Max stared at Liz as she got out of the car, she looked really good. He wondered if she was still angry with him for the way he treated her, he didn’t have long to wait to find out. As their eyes met Liz shot him a look that made it very clear how she was feeling about him. He let out a heavy sigh and got into the car as Phillip and Nancy greeted each other. Liz didn’t say a word to Max, but made a point of saying hello to Isabel. “Hey, Isabel, I like that jacket; is it new?”

Isabel smiled, “Yeah, I got it yesterday at the mall.” She said then added, “You and I should go shopping some time, it would be a lot of fun.”

Liz nodded, “ok that would be great thanks.” She said as she slid into the back seat next to Max. Isabel got in last so she had to move even further over. She didn’t say anything as they drove over to the house the realtor wanted to show them. She had the distinct feeling that Max was staring at her the entire time but she was to chicken to look his way and find out. After what seemed to take forever they arrived at a beautiful home, actually it was more like a mansion. She couldn’t believe her eyes as they drove up the driveway, the manicured lawns were just beginning to come to life and the front entry was huge with large columns that framed the large double doors.

“Dad, how many rooms are in this place?” Isabel asked as they got out of the car.

“There are 8 bedrooms on the upstairs floor, and servant’s quarters on the downstairs floor. It has a study, a den, and a formal living area as well as a family room.” Phillip said sound very pleased.

Liz just shook her head as they walked inside, of course it was a beautiful home, nicer then anything she had every seen, but some how she felt out of place there. Phillip smiled, “so Elizabeth, what do you think of this house?” he asked.

Liz smiled, “It’s really nice Mr. Evens…” she said politely.

Nancy frowned at her daughter, “Elizabeth, you can call Phillip by his first name after all he will be dad after we are married.”

Liz felt every hair on the back of her neck stand up on end, she struggled to maintain her temper as she calmly said, “You meant to say step dad didn’t you mother.”

Phillip could see that the situation was about to turn ugly so he quickly interceded, “Of course that was what she meant Elizabeth, I am sure she didn’t mean anything. Come on now lets go look at the pool area.” He said stirring them towards the back of the house. Max seemed to follow behind as they went, Liz smiled and was polite as the realtor guided them through each section of the house, pointing out all the wonderful features. The house was very nice; each bedroom had its own private bathroom, with large walk in closets. The house seemed extravagant and like way more then they would ever need Liz thought to herself. Isabel happily took the room that faced the rear of the house and had a large balcony that overlooked the swimming pool area. Nancy and Phillip took the master suite and Max and Liz both seemed equally uninterested in what room they would have. “So what do you think, won’t this be a great place to live. Not only does it have a huge swimming pool, but we have 10 acres of land that we can do what ever we like with?” Phillip asked as they headed back down stairs.

Max finally seemed to find his voice, “It’s a bit much don’t you think?”

Nancy laughed, “No its perfect, and it will be wonderful having Sara on full time that will help out tremendously.”

Max mumbled under his breath something about preferring his old room at his old house but no one except Liz heard him. She found herself suddenly feeling sorry for him; it was strange she hadn’t thought too much about how he might be feeling about this whole thing. She glanced over to Isabel who was chatting with her dad about how to decorate her room, she figured Isabel was probably taking the changes pretty well, but she knew Max was struggling as she was. It was the sound of her mother’s voice that interrupted her thoughts, “Of course we will have to have all new furniture.” Nancy told them.

Max shook his head, “What’s wrong with our furniture…my mom picked it out just before she died, it’s not even that old.” He said defensively.

“Oh well it is nice enough but it’s not really how I would choose to decorate it’s a bit old fashioned… I mean it was fine for your old house but we need new things, this is after all a new beginning for all of us.” Nancy said oblivious to how insensitive she was being, “Phillip don’t you think we should get new things for our new home together?”

Phillip walked over and wrapped Nancy up in his arms, “Yes of course, we can all go shopping together, it will be fun.”

Liz could see by the expression on Max’s face that he was angry, “You have got to be kidding, mom spent weeks choosing out the furniture we have, she loved some of those antiques; they meant the world to her!” Max told them. “You can’t just go and toss them aside like they don’t matter!”

Nancy shook her head, “We won’t throw them out Max, we can donate them, or better yet we can send them over for auctions.” She said then turned back to Phillip, “remember Phillip I was telling you about how we should check out some of the estate auctions when we buy for this place, we can just have them sell Diana’s things for us.”

Liz could see by the looks on both Isabel and Max’s face that her mothers comments hurt them, “Mom, maybe we could use some of Diana’s things in the new place, I mean the dinning set is gorgeous and it would still work very nicely here in this house.” Liz tried to suggest.

Nancy shook her head, “No that will never work for the way I want to decorate; besides we wanted that ebony set that we saw for the formal dinning room, remember Phillip.”

Phillip smiled, “Yes, it is a bit more sophisticated and with the kind of clients and entertaining I will be doing it will be a better choice.” He said as they all got into the car. Seeing the brooding look on Max face he added, “Look Nancy and I both know that these changes are difficult for you but we are starting a new life together and well we want to start off fresh. I am sure Elizabeth has some things that she feels attached to but she is not getting upset.”

Liz didn’t say anything; truth was she didn’t have anything at all at their hose that was that important to her. Most of her stuff was still back home in her old room, her mom had bought stuff for this house here in Roswell and it wasn’t anything that matter to her. She could tell that Max was really upset by the tension in his body. She wished she could do something to make him feel better, even though he had been a jerk the last time they were together she still felt bad for him. The rest of the ride home was quite. Liz thought about the day, it was pretty obvious that Phillip and her mom had already chosen that house and apparently the furnishing to go in it, so she wondered why it was so important that they all go along. It must be more of her moms fantasy that some how they would all be this big happy family, but that was just never going to happen Liz thought to herself.

She waited as her mom said goodbye to Phillip. She was tired and wanted to get home. The only thing she said to Max the entire day was just before she got out of the car she leaned over and whispered softly, “I am sorry about today.” Max didn’t say anything though he just kept staring out the window; he didn’t even look in her direction. Once home he went straight to his room and slammed his door. He couldn’t believe the way his dad took Nancy’s side over his, the more he thought about it the angrier it made him feel. It wasn’t bad enough that his dad was selling their home, and marrying Nancy Parker, but now he was selling off all of his mom’s favorite furniture so Nancy could decorate her home the way she wanted too. He slammed his fist into the desk, in frustration. Isabel walked into his room and shook her head, “That’s a really good way to break your hand.” She told him.

“Yeah well its better that I hit the desk then anything else.” Max told her.

Isabel walked over and shut the door behind her, “Max I know how you feel about mom’s stuff, I do, but getting angry is not going to help. Trust me.”

Max shook his head, “they haven’t gotten married yet and she is already calling the shots. Dad just follows her around and nods his head like some kind of love sick puppy.”

Isabel let out a heavy sigh, “Max I know it is going to be hard having all moms’s stuffed shipped off to an auction like this but you will always have her in here, she will always be with you in your heart.” She said trying to calm him down.

Max glared at her, “How can you do that, how can you stand there and just pretend that it doesn’t matter that he is slowly trying to erase her from our lives?” he snapped at her. “Don’t you even care about mom any more?”

Isabel shook her head in anger and frustration as tears formed in her eyes, “Of course I care about Mom and miss her every bit as much as you do but Max I can’t stop dad, I can’t change anything that he is doing and neither can you. Do you think by sulking and being rude to Liz that he is all the sudden going to change his mind and say, oh my mistake, let me just break things off with Nancy because that way Max will be happy again….” She shook her head, “Well it isn’t going to happen so you better just stop being angry all the time because their isn’t anything you can do about the situation either!” she told him then stormed out of his room.

Max ran his fingers through his hair and shook his head, “Oh yes there is...” he said to himself thinking of what Kyle had said to him earlier.

Liz dropped her keys on the desk as she walked in, “I can’t believe you said that right in front of Max and Isabel like that.”

“Said what?” Nancy asked oblivious to the hurt she had caused.

Liz shook her head, “Mother you said that his mom had terrible taste and that there was no way her things would work in the new home!” she reminded her.

Nancy shrugged her shoulders, “That’s not what I meant, I merely said that some of Diana’s taste were a little out of date and that I wanted Phillip and I to start over with our own things, you know to make it our home together.”

“Mom you suggested that Phillip sell off all of Diana’s things so that you could use the money to buy new stuff, did you ever think how that might make Max and Isabel feel?” Liz asked.

“Elizabeth they are just things, its not like they were treasured family heirlooms or something, it was a sofa and dinning room set, I’m not keeping any of our old stuff either.” Nancy informed her.

“Mom you just don’t get it, you never think about how what you say and do might affect others, you only think of how it would affect you.” Liz told her as she went into her room and shut the door.

Nancy threw her hands up in the air in exasperation, “I just don’t understand how it is that I always end up being the bad guy in everything!”

Ok here is part 4 to the story. this part is pretty much all Max and Liz. I read some of the replies and yes Nancy is not the nicest person in the world but you never know what can turn a persons heart??? Anyway hope you like the story thus far and until next time :-)

Moving day…

It all seemed to happen so fast, Phillip house sold in record time and Nancy decided that they should move in and be all settled before the actually wedding ceremony so that there wouldn’t be a huge rush just before the wedding to get things down. Her mother had spent most of the last three weeks packing there stuff and scrambling to finish with wedding plans. Liz was so thankful when her mother finally decided on a dress for her ceremony. Isabel had helped pick out the dresses that she and Liz would wear. By the time they were finished with all the fittings though Liz felt like she was ready to explode her mother was so difficult and everything had to be just so. OF course Phillip seemed to be just as anxious about the ceremony as her mother did, insisting on certain caterers and the most prominent people in society and business being invited to come. Liz looked around her room one last time before heading out to the car; she felt no real emotional involvement to this house at all so moving was not big deal for her, in some ways she was just happy to be done with all the work. Besides school would be out soon and she would be going to stay with her dad after the wedding, she only had to ignore her mother for a little longer, she thought to her self. As they drove over to pick up Isabel her attention turned to Max, she wondered how he was dealing with the move. She hadn’t seen that much of him since the blow up about his mother’s things and even though they were in the same class at school he barely talked to her.

Max sat on the swing in the back yard and thought about his mom. She loved her garden, every year she would come out and tend to the roses and the lilac bushes, two of her favorite flowers. He remembered when he was younger how she would bring him outside with her and they would sit in the swing and make up silly names for all the flowers. She would tell him stories about all the friends of the garden and he would listen as she created wonderful imaginary worlds filled with laughter and adventure. Max sniffled in and wiped his eyes just as Isabel walked out followed by Nancy and Liz, “Max we are going to head over to the new house, dad wanted you to wait here just to make sure the house is locked when the movers have finished loading the truck.” Isabel reminded him.

Max waved his hand but didn’t say anything; Liz could see that he was hurting. She glanced back over her shoulder as they headed back inside the house, “Mom I think I am going to stay and see if Max wants some company ok.” She said.

Nancy shook her head, “Aright, make sure that the movers know that all the furniture stays, the people from the auction will be picking it up on Monday. I don’t want anything brought over to the house by mistake; it will just end up being another thing for me to deal with before the wedding.” Nancy told her as she left.

Liz walked back out into the garden; Max was still sitting in the same spot, “Hey.” She said softly.

Max sat up and looked up at her, “Oh hey…why are you still here?” he asked her.

Liz smiled, “Well I guess I just thought you might like to have company even if you don’t necessarily like me.” She told him as she walked over and sat down next to him on the swing.

Max let out a small sigh, “I don’t dislike you Liz, I don’t even know you.” He told her.

“That’s true but you were pretty awful the one time we did spend any time together.” Liz reminded him.

“Your right, I was pretty terrible, I’m sorry about that, chalk it up to having a bad day.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “Your forgiven I was not having the best day either.” She told him. “So how is today going?”

Max looked at her and smiled, “Well it hasn’t been a very good day either.”

Liz stood up and walked over to the roses and breathed in their fragrance, “Its really beautiful out here, did your mom do all of this?” she asked as she looked at all the pretty flowers.

Max shook his head, “Yeah she use to love working in her garden, every year she would plant new flowers and tend to her roses. She took a lot of pride in our home, she was a really great mom.” He said feeling sad.

Liz turned to face him and looked into his eyes, “I’m sorry Max, and I know this must be really hard for you.”

Max stared into her eyes, “it’s like saying goodbye to her all over again. Seeing all her things packed up and taken away its just really hard…”
Liz felt so bad for him without even thinking she wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close. Max was so surprised by her action that he didn’t know what to do or say. He closed his eyes as tears rolled down his cheek. She held him close and whispered, “Its going to be ok…I know right now it doesn’t feel like it but it is going to be ok.”

The sound of someone’s voice calling out to him made him pull back and Liz let go of him as Kyle and Michael walked into the garden. “Hey Max your dad said you were stuck over here waiting.” Michael told him.

Kyle looked at Liz and smiled, “Hey its Parker right?”

Liz shook her head, “Yeah that’s right.”

“Liz this is Michael, and Kyle, this is my soon to be step sister Liz.” He told them. Liz felt awkward as they just stood there staring at her, “Well I think I will just go make sure that everything is all packed.”

“Ok let us know if the movers show up will you.” Max called out after her. Liz nodded and then went inside closing the door behind her as she went. Kyle shook his head, “So were you like making the moves on your little sister just now or what?”

Max glared at him, “No, it was nothing, just drop it. He said then added, “Besides she is not my sister, she will be my step sister.”

Kyle laughed, “Come on man you said she was a snob and that you wanted nothing to do with her what gives? She was all over you just now.” he asked.

Michael tried to change the subject, “So how long do you have to stay here?”

“Until the movers show up, they are supposed to be here around noon.” Max told them thankful for the change in subject.

Kyle walked over and looked through the window; Liz was still in the kitchen making sure the boxes were all taped shut. “She is one very fine looking babe.” Kyle said as he turned back towards Max, “Hey since you’re not going to go for it mind if I ask her out?

Max glared at him, “Yeah I do mind.” He told him.

“Come on Max what gives, you don’t want her but no one else can have her either?” Kyle told him sounding annoyed.

Max shook his head, “Look Kyle she’s not your type, she actually has a brain.”

Kyle shook his head, “HA! HA! So funny, I’m serious if your not making a move then I am going to ask her out.”

“Just let it go.” Max told him, his voice deadly serious.

Kyle looked at Liz through the window again and then smiled, “Oh I get it your going to do like I said that’s why you don’t want me to ask her out. Really Max that’s all you had to say, I don’t know why you have to make everything so complicated.”

Max just smiled, “yeah well you know me always making a big deal out of everything.”

Michael walked over towards the kitchen, “Come on Kyle lets go, catch you later Max.”

Max stood there and stared at Liz through the window. He wasn’t really sure why but the thought of Kyle being anywhere near her made him what to punch the guy. He had thought about what Kyle said a couple of times, he had to admit that he really hated Nancy Parker enough to want to rid her of his life but he just couldn’t seem to bring himself to use Liz like that. Deep down he still felt like she was a victim in all of this too. He smiled as he came into the kitchen, “so did they do their job right, everything already to go?” he asked trying to make small talk.

Liz smiled, “Yeah well I really wasn’t checking on the mover’s work so much as trying to avoid Kyle.” She told him.

Max laughed, “Really why is that?”

“Oh I don’t know, he just seems a little immature at times, actually I’m a little surprised the two of you are friends? I mean Michael I can understand, he seems a lot like you in some ways, but Kyle he is way different.” Liz said with out thinking how she was coming across.

Max shook his head, “What do you mean exactly by different, how is he different?” he asked her.

Liz walked into the living room and sat down on the couch, “Oh I don’t know he just seems more into partying and goofing off, like all he wants to do is have a good time, you seem more serious.” She told him.

Max shrugged his shoulders, “So what are you saying, you think Kyle is stupid or something?” he said sounding a bit cross and feeling defensive for his friend.

Liz could tell he was misunderstanding what she was saying and tried to think of a way to explain what she meant, “No that’s not what I meant, what I was trying to say is that you seem to be more into working hard, you know like you can see the big picture, life after high school.”

“Yeah well Kyle is a good guy; he and I have been friends for a really long time since grade school.” Max told her.

Liz smiled and nodded, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to talk bad about him, he seems really sweet.” She said trying to smooth things over.

“Both Kyle and Michael were there for me when my mom died; they really helped me through some bad times…” Max told her.

Liz could see that he was annoyed with her so she tried to think of a way to change the subject, “I was noticing this jewelry box, did this belong to your mom?” she asked him as she pointed over to the coffee table.

Max walked over and picked up the hand carved antique jewelry box, “Yeah this was hers, she loved it. My grandmother got it for her the day my mom and dad married.” Max lifted the lid and showed her where his mom’s initials had been engraved into the wood with gold lettering along with the date of their wedding anniversary. The top of the box had a bouquet of roses etched into it and the inside was lined with a beautiful red silk.

“It’s really beautiful…you should keep it.” Liz told him.

“No, it would probably just make your mother angry and then my dad would be all over me about it.” Max told her as he walked over and carefully placed it into one of the half full boxes. “Most of this personal stuff my dad wants put into storage so your mom wrote antic on all the boxes in bright red…see.” He showed her the top of the box.

Liz felt bad for him, she wished she could say or do something to make him feel better but she knew there wasn’t. Truth was he was probably right about her mom throwing a fit; she didn’t have any excuses for her mom’s terrible behavior though, that was just the way she had always been, highly critical and sometimes down right mean. Liz walked over and peeked into the box, “Is this a picture of your mother?” She asked as she pulled out a photo of a beautiful dark hair woman with large brown eyes.

Max smiled, “yeah that’s my mom; this photo was taken when I was about 5 not to long after Isabel and I were adopted.”

Liz had a shocked look on her face, “did you say adopted?”

Max laughed, “Yeah, didn’t your mother ever mention the fact that Isabel and I were adopted?”

Liz shook her head no, “No she didn’t.” Actually it didn’t surprise her all that much that her mom didn’t say anything she was always too self absorbed in her own life to pay attention to things going on in other people’s lives.

“My mother was great, she always did everything she could to make Isabel and me feel like we really were her children, and you know she always went that extra mile to just make us feel special Like we were her world and she loved us.” Max told her.

Liz placed her hand over his and smiled, “That’s so awesome Max really, I wish I had a better relationship with my mom like that.” She said feeling just a bit jealous.

“Yeah but your close with your dad right?” he asked as he placed the photo back into the box.

“Oh yeah, we are really close, he has always been my best friend, well besides Alex and Maria.” She told him.

Max turned and followed her over to the couch, “Yeah, I’m not that close to my dad, its weird there were times when I almost felt like he went through with the adoption for my mom’s sake.” Max told her then added, “Don’t get me wrong he has always been there financially, and in his own way he loves us, but I think he would have liked to have kids of his own. I think it was a big deal to him you know.”

“What about your birth parents, what happened to them?” she asked as she brushed the hair away from her face.

Max shook his head, “I don’t remember a lot about them, they were killed in a car accident when I was 4. Isabel and I spent a year in foster care before my mom and dad adopted us”

“Oh Max, I am sorry. That must have been so hard for you.” Liz said her heart going out to him.

“It was… but as ruff a time as that was Diana Evens made it better, you know she was just such a loving and caring person and completely genuine, so as far as I am concerned she was and always will be my mom.” Max told her.

Liz stared into Max eyes, she realized now why they held the sorrow that they did. She smiled and whispered softly, “That’s a really wonderful memory of her Max.”

Max felt so at ease; he hadn’t felt so comfortable talking to another person since his mom passed away. “Wow that got heavy didn’t it, I’m sorry I haven’t talked to anyone about this ever.” He told her. “You’re really easy to talk to, thanks.”

Liz smiled at him as he stared into her eyes, she was beautiful and he found that he was starting to like her in spite of him self. It was the sound of someone knocking on the door that broke the moment between them and caused Liz to jump. Max laughed at her, “It’s just the movers, looks like they are here early.” He told her as he walked over to the door.

Liz smiled but didn’t say anything. She was glad she decided to stay behind with him, maybe they could at least be friends, it would be nice to have someone here to talk to, she thought to herself.

Ok here is part 5 of my Max and Liz story. Thanks for leaving me the feed back its great to hear what everyone has to say. Hope your all doing great and enjoying the hoildays.

The Wedding…

Liz stood staring at herself in the mirror, she looked out her bedroom window for the third time it was a gorgeous day, really the perfect day for a wedding she had to admit. The guests were already arriving and she was almost finished getting ready. The last few weeks felt as if they had just flown by. She couldn’t believe how quickly the move happened. She had become pretty good friends with Isabel and well things with Max seemed to be a little better. She looked back over into the mirror again; she was wearing a long strapless pale blue gown that didn’t look to bad since she had spent some of her time with Isabel by the pool. Max had been pretty scarce over the last few weeks, spending most of his time with Kyle and Michael so she really hadn’t seen too much of him since the day that she spent with him at his old house. She wondered how he was feeling today, it was suppose to be a happy day and yet all she could think about was her dad. She hoped he wasn’t feeling to down, she reminded herself to call him later and check in on him. It was the sound of someone voice that interrupted her thoughts, “Liz can I come in?” Isabel asked.

Liz walked over and opened the door, “Sure come on in. Wow Isabel you look gorgeous, I mean it really. This dress is the perfect coloring for you.” Liz told her.

Isabel smiled, “thanks, I was wondering if you would help me put this necklace on?” she said as she handed the necklace over to her. Liz took it in her hand and examined it closely. It was a beautiful sapphire stone surrounded by six little diamonds. “This is really beautiful…was it a gift?” she asked as she fastened the clasp for her.

Isabel looked at in the mirror, “Yeah, my mother gave it to me the Christmas before she died. She told her then added, “Do you think it is wrong for me to wear today, I mean since our parents are getting married?”

Liz smiled and shook her head, “No way, Isabel it was a gift to you from your mom, you should wear it when ever you want to.”

Isabel smiled as tears formed in her eyes, ‘Thanks Liz, this has been a hard day for me. I mean on the one hand I am happy for my dad…he has been really lonely since my mother died, but I can’t even begin to tell you how much I miss my mom today.” She told her as the tears ran down her cheeks.

Liz wrapped her arms around her, “Oh Isabel I understand really I do.”

Isabel sniffled in, “I know I don’t always show it but this whole thing has been really hard…my mom’s birthday was last Friday and my dad didn’t even remember it. I couldn’t believe he just completely forget all about it.” She confided in Liz.

Liz shook her head, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t know. Did you say anything to him, did you remind him?” she asked.

“Yeah, I finally asked if he wanted to go over to visit her grave with me and Max, you know just to pay our respects and he said he was sorry but that he couldn’t do it.” She told her as they both walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. “He actually told me that he would go later when things weren’t so crazy.”

Liz shook her head, “Isabel that’s awful, really awful. I am so sorry.” She told her wondering if her mother had anything to do with Phillips not going. “I hope my mother didn’t influence him.”

Isabel wiped her eyes, “I don’t think she even knew, besides my dad is a big boy he can make his own choices, he chose not to go.” She assured Liz.

Liz shook her head, “yeah that’s true.” She said, thankful that her mother wasn’t the cause of this new hurt that both Isabel and Max must be feeling.

Isabel smiled, “I know you’re not really happy about your mom marrying my dad are you?” she asked Liz.

Liz let out a small sigh, “Truth?”

Isabel nodded, “Yeah.”

Liz shook her head, “No I am not happy that they are getting married, but I am trying to get use the idea. Truth is I didn’t want my parents to get divorced, my dad didn’t want the divorce either, but my mother was unhappy and wanted out so she left. I mean they did marriage counseling and retreats but she just never seemed to be happy. My dad tried everything but in the end she just wanted out.” Liz explained, “When we first moved here, she was kind of lonely, I almost thought that she might get back together with my dad, but then…”

“But then she met my dad.” Isabel finished her sentence.

“Yeah, she came home all excited one afternoon about meeting this guy.” Liz told her.

“Oh wow I had no idea, I’m sorry Liz.” Isabel told her feeling her pain.

“I know its crazy but I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I kept thinking that some miracle would happen and she would change her mind and we would move back home but I knew after they went out a few times and saw the change in her that it wasn’t going to happen.” Liz told her then added, “Don’t get me wrong Isabel, I am not like all angry with your dad or anything like that, I know my mom is doing what she wants to do, its like you said before its just kind of hard.”

“Yeah.” Isabel said as she let out a small sigh. “Liz I know your mother and my dad have been trying to push this whole we’re all one big family routine on us and I know it just feels really weird, but I was hoping that at least you and I could be friends and not worry about the whole sister thing.” She told her.

Liz smiled and nodded, “That would be great actually.”

Isabel smiled, “can I ask you a question?”

Liz shook her head yes, “Sure.”

“What about you and Max?” she asked watching Liz reaction carefully.

She suddenly felt very nervous, “Um, what do you mean…what about me and Max?” she asked as she stood up and walked over to the mirror and started fiddling with her hair.

Isabel smiled, “Well it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know he likes you and I was wondering if you’re feeling the same way about him?”

Liz laughed, “Trust me Isabel; Max does not like me, if anything he puts up with me, besides the most time he has ever spent with me is in English class.” She said just as someone knocked at the door. Liz walked over and opened it, surprised to find both Maria and Alex standing there in front of her. After several seconds of screams and hugs she finally asked, “What are you guys doing here?” she asked as they came into the room.

Maria laughed, “Well your dad thought you might be feeling just a little blue today and…”

Alex interrupted, “And since he couldn’t come be with you he sent us instead.” He finished telling her.

Liz wiped away the tears as they threatened to fall, “Oh you guys are so great, thank you.” She said as she turned toward Isabel. “Oh I’m sorry; this is Isabel, Phillips daughter, Isabel these are my two of best friends, Alex, and Maria.”

“Hello, it’s nice to meet you, it really great that you could come and support her today.” Isabel told them before heading for the door. “Well I think I will go check on the groom, it’s almost time for the ceremony.” Isabel said as she closed the door behind her.

Liz laughed, “Oh I am so glad you two are here, I have been so bummed.”

Alex looked around the room, “Man this guy Phillip must have some serious bank, and this place is like a mansion you weren’t exaggerating in your email were you.”

Liz shook her head, “No and you haven’t seen the half of it, there is a huge pool and a ridiculous amount of gardens and land that we will never use.” She told them. “Oh mom mentioned something about getting horses but I don’t if she will or not.”

Maria sat down on the bed, “so is she going to freak because we came?”

Liz laughed, “Let her if she wants too, this was such an amazingly sweet thing of my dad to do and you guys are the best. I am not going to let her ruin it, besides she is so wrapped up in this wedding that she probably won’t even notice.”

Maria looked at her dress then over to Liz, “Do you think we are dressed ok…I figured this thing was going to be formal.”

“You look perfect. I love this color on you.” She said. Maria was wearing a beautiful pale peach tea length dress with her hair all done up in a beautiful upsweep. Liz turned to Alex, “And you look simply charming, very debonair.” She told him as she straightened his tie.

Alex laughed, “Yeah well Michelle didn’t seem to think so.” He told her, sounding just a bit rejected.

Liz made a sad face, “Oh no she broke things off again?”

Maria let out a sigh, “Of course she did because she is a horrible person. This time though you’re not going to take her back again right?”

Alex shook his head, “No, I am not going to give in or allow myself to be manipulated by her big blue eyes, or her very late night telephone calls telling me she is sorry or that she loves me.” Alex said as he lifted his hand speaking as if he were reciting the words.

Liz laughed, “While I am sorry she broke you heart… but I agree with Maria. This relationship is over, move on she is not the girl for you.” She told him.

Alex smiled, “Yeah I know, it’s just that she was a really good kisser and I loved the way she looked in those short, tight tee’s.” he told them.

Maria looked at Liz and then they both said in unison, “Gross too much information….”

Max was waiting with Kyle and Michael for Isabel and Liz to come down. He had been avoiding everyone as the wedding drew near. He saw Isabel but Liz was no where in sight and the wedding was about to get started. He half wondered if she decided not to take part, he had to admit he wouldn’t mind it if the ceremony got delayed.

“So you’re escorting Liz down, who is walking Isabel down the isle?” Michael asked.

“I think she is walking down with Jason, he is a junior partner in my dad’s law firm.” Max told them, “My dad has been kind of mentoring him for awhile now and they are pretty good friends.”

“So Max, it looks like you got competition.” Kyle said as he pointed over at Liz. She was walking toward them her arm wrapped around some guys arm. He was tall with dark hair; Max looked him over and suddenly felt very jealous although he wasn’t sure why.

“So who is this guy?” Kyle asked.

Max shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know…it doesn’t involve me, so what do I care?” he said feeling annoyed. Liz seemed really happy and she was smiling and laughing as the two walked towards him.

“OH I thought you had this big plan to get back at your dad and have a little fun along the way, looks like she is already taken though.” Kyle laughed.

Michael hit Kyle on the arm, “Knock it off man…” he said as he walked over and took his seat.

Kyle shrugged his shoulders, “What?” he said as he followed behind Michael.

Liz smiled as she walked up to Max, “Hey, I would like you to meet, Alex. He is my friend from home.” She told him.

Alex shook his head, “Hey.” He said as he stood with Liz.

Max nodded his head, “SO you flew in just for the wedding?” Max asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

Liz smiled, “Yeah well he and Maria knew I would be bummed today so they surprised me with a visit.” She explained, “There’s Maria, now.” She said waiving her over to them. Max turned to see a cute little blonde walking over with Isabel. “Maria this is Max and this is my friend Maria.”

Max nodded, “Hello.”

Liz looked around at the yard. It was really beautiful she had to admit, the decorators did an amazing job. There were boutiques of red roses everywhere and the chairs were all covered with sill fabric. At the end of the isle was a large gazebo that Phillip had built especially for the ceremony. Off to the right was the pool, it had tiny flower baskets and candles floating in it that gave everything a very romantic feel. Liz saw Phillip standing with the minister and the orchestra was just about to begin to play. Alex leaned over and kissed Liz on the cheek and whispered into her ear, “Ok kiddo just smile and get through this and then if you want Maria and I will take you into town for the biggest ice cream sundae we can find and you can have a good cry ok.”

Liz smiled, “thanks Alex.” She told him. She didn’t notice how closely Max was watching her.

Maria hugged her and squeezed her hand; “You can do this…” she said then followed Alex over and sat with him.

Max turned to her and held out his arm, “Well unless you have any last minute ideas, you know like throwing a stink bomb down the isle or screaming fire, it looks like we have to do this?” he whispered to her.

Liz smiled, “You ok Max?” she asked softly.

He shook his head, “I am doing about as good as you are today.” He told her.

Liz shook her head, she understood. It was strange to everyone one there this was a wonderful happy occasion, but for a few in attendance this was a very painful time. Something her mother was oblivious to. She looked over at Max as they began to walk to down the isle together, “You look really nice today.” She whispered softly.

He glanced over to her and whispered back, “You look beautiful…really very beautiful.” He told her as they reached the end of the isle and parted ways. She looked over at him one last time and he was staring at her so intently that she began to blush. Liz forced her attention back down the isle toward Isabel and Jason as they approached the alter. She felt the tears well up as he mother appeared, she was very beautiful, dressed in a gorgeous off white dress. She carried a small tasteful bouquet of red roses in her hand and white babies breathe. She wanted to be happy for her mom but in her heart she kept thinking about her dad and what he might be going through right now. The ceremony was very nice, the minister spoke about love and commitment, words Liz was sure her mom didn’t fully understand. When the ceremony ended and Phillip kissed her mom and she felt sad, it was so hard to believe but her family was really never going to be the same and she would never have those moments with both her parents back ever again. She tried to hold back but the tears just seemed to fall.
Max stepped up and extended his arm, Liz took his arm and allowed him to lead her down the isle and over for photographs. He could see she was upset so he turned to her while they were waiting, “You were awesome up there, no mom could ask for a better daughter then you.” He told her as she wiped a tear from her cheek. Liz caught her breath as his hand brushed against her cheek softly. She was amazed at how tender he was being with her, “Thank you Max.” She whispered softly.

Just then Michael and Kyle walked up and interrupted them, “Hey Max how long you have to hang around here?” he asked.

Max stepped away from Liz and shrugged, “At least for the pictures.” He told them.

Liz walked over and stood with Maria and Alex, “Well at least it’s over.” She told them. Alex wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Max.

Nancy and Phillip joined them after spending several minutes greeting guest and receiving congratulations. Maria smiled and politely said, “Congratulations.”

Nancy smiled and hugged Maria and then Alex, “Oh my, this is a wonderful surprise you kids came all this way to see us today.”

Alex nodded his head, “Yeah well we thought we would come keep Liz company for a few days.” He told her.

“Oh that is so sweet…Elizabeth, you look so beautiful. You and Isabel look so beautiful, now don’t any of you wonder off because we have to take pictures then you can go in and join the party.” Nancy told them as she rejoined Phillip who was busy chatting with his collogues.

After what seemed to take forever and her mothers need for every shot under the sun of them, they were finally able to join everyone around under the large tent. A huge dance floor was set up for the party and Phillip had hired a band to play. The food was really good; they had prime rib and lobster flown in from Maine. It wasn’t long after dinner was served that the band began to play and Phillip escorted Nancy out on the dance floor. Everyone watched as they had their first dance, making compliments about how great a couple they were and how much in love they were. About half way through the song the master of ceremony asked that the rest of the wedding party to join the bride and groom on the dance floor. Max walked over and held out his hand to Liz, “Looks like we are up.” He said as he pulled her into his arms. Isabel was unable to find Jason so she turned to Alex, “Would you mind filling in for me, I seem to be without a partner at the moment.” She told him.

Alex smiled and escorted her out onto the dance floor, “A beautiful girl like you with out a partner, this must be my lucky day.” He told her, as he pulled her into his arms.

Max glanced over at Alex and Isabel, “Looks like Isabel was able to find partner after all.” He said.

Liz turned to see the two of them together, “Oh yeah. Alex is a great dancer.” She told him.

“Yeah I think we are supposed to dance for a minute then it signals that everyone can come out and dance.” He told her.

Liz laughed, “You know a lot about weddings?” she said a bit surprised.

Max smiled, “Well just chalk it up to stupid useless information that clutters my mind, really I blame it all on Jeopardy.”

Liz smiled, “Really why is that.”

“It’s what started the whole trivia craze now we’re an entire nation running around with useless knowledge, I can’t tell you how to conjugate a verb but I know that once we join the bride and groom on the dance floor it signals everyone else to come out and dance.” He told her as she laughed. Max stared into her eyes and smiled, “I like seeing you like this.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “like what?” she asked softly.

“Happy.” Was all he said as he pulled her a little closer and continued dancing.

Kyle looked over at Maria and smiled, “I think I am going to ask that blonde to dance.” He said to Michael.

Michael shook his head, “I don’t think so.” He said as he walked toward Maria.

Kyle called out, “why not?”

Michael answered back, “Because I am.” He said just before he introduced him self to her.

Isabel looked over at Max and Liz, “I kind of think that Max has a crush on Liz.” She told him.

Alex laughed, “I wouldn’t be surprised, Liz is an awesome girl.” He said simply.

Isabel suddenly felt awkward, “did I say something wrong, you and Liz aren’t dating are you?” she asked.

Alex laughed, “No hardly, Liz and Maria are like sisters to me, and no we are not dating.” He told her.

Isabel felt relieved, “Oh good, I thought maybe I had just created a situation for a moment.” She told him.

“No, its cool, I kind of think Liz likes Max too but she probably won’t do anything about it.” He told her.

“Why would you say that?” Isabel asked.

“Because ever since her parents got divorced, Liz has been kind of guarded, I don’t think she has gone out with any guy ever. I kind of think she is afraid of letting any guy get to close, because she is afraid of getting hurt. That’s why she throws herself into her classes the way she does.’ Alex told her.

Isabel shook her head, “yeah, I could see that about her.” She said softly.

Maria smiled, “So your friends with Max?” she asked as the two of them danced.

“Yeah we go way back to grade school.” Michael told her.

“Yeah that’s how it is with Liz and me too. She has been my best friend since I was about 5 I guess.” Maria told him.

“So how long are you staying?” he asked.

Maria smiled, “I think a few days, I have to be home for finals next week.” She told him.

Michael laughed, “Yeah.”

Liz looked around the room as the other couples began joining in the dancing with them, “Looks like you were right.” She told him.

Max laughed, “What can I say, I’m a genius.” He teased her. Liz smiled and laid her head against his shoulder. She really was beginning to like Max, and found herself actually having a good time. She like the way it felt having his arms wrapped around her waist and the possessive way he was holding her but she seeing her mom and Phillip as the danced by reminded her to be careful, she didn’t want to end up like her dad with a broken heart either. After all in her experience loving someone only led to pain and sorrow.

Spending time…

Liz was so glad when the wedding was finally over and her mom was away on her honeymoon. It at lease gave her a breather and she was looking forward to the time with Maria and Alex since they were going to be staying for a few days. Liz was sitting in her bed, just waking up when someone knocked on the door, “Yeah come on in.” she called.

Maria came through the door, “Finally you’re a wake. I have been at your door knocking at least 6 times.” She told her.

Liz laughed, “Well sorry but it was a late night, besides what is so important that has got you out of bed before 10:00.” Liz asked.

Maria closed the door and walked over to sit on the bed, “I wanted to see how you were doing you know with your mom leaving for her honeymoon and all?”

“I am fine, really. In a weird sort of way it kind of a relief to have the whole thing done with, at least now I don’t have to listen to her go on and on about the wedding plans.” Liz told her. “And I called my dad, he is doing ok, I thought he might be freaking out, but he said he is dealing with it and he has been really busy at work, so that helps.”

Maria smiled, “Ok well then my next question is what’s up with you and Max?” she asked.

Liz laughed, “What are you talking about….there isn’t anything up with me and Max.” she told her.

Maria shook her head, “Ok this is me Maria, I know you like I know myself and I saw the way you were looking at him so talk.”

Liz lowered her gaze and shook her head, “Truthfully, I do like him, I mean even though he was a jerk at first, he has been really sweet the last two times that we were together. I don’t know how he feels about me though.” She told her.

Maria smiled, “Well I know, he likes you…I mean it. Anyone who watched the too of you dancing could see that he likes you a lot.”

Liz shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know its all really complicated…” she said as she got out of bed and grabbed some shorts and tank top.

Maria threw a pillow at her, “You make everything complicated, just for once follow your heart with out over analyzing everything to death.”

Liz laughed, “Hey your not suppose to be picking on me, your suppose to support me.” She told as she threw the pillow back.

Maria got up and walked over to the door, “No as your friend I am suppose to be honest with you not tell you what you want to hear. Truth time Liz, your afraid to let any guy in because of what your mom did to your dad, but your not your mom and he’s not your dad….give it a chance.”

Liz smiled but didn’t say anything as she went into the bathroom. She heard Maria yell that she would be down stairs with Alex and to hurry up so they could get to the mall just before she closed the door. As she stood in the shower she thought about what Maria said, deep down she knew it was true she had been avoiding all matters of the heart for as long as she could remember. Her parent’s relationship was never a very healthy one, her mom always seemed unhappy and her dad was always trying to over compensate for every little thing to try and make her happy. She always felt like her dad was struggling against some unknown, unseen enemy for her mothers heart and attention but she just couldn’t figure out what the enemy was. She watched over the years as her father grew more and more stressed about pleasing his wife and never quite being able to live up to what it was she wanted, she just didn’t know if she wanted to end up in that kind of situation. As she stepped out of the shower and began drying her hair she laughed, “Oh my gosh Liz your doing it again over analyzing everything, it was a dance not a marriage proposal.” She told her self.

Max laid in bed thinking about the night before, sadly his dad’s wedding went off with out a hitch, part of him was hoping for freak winter storm to hit in early June but no such luck. He had to admit Liz looked really pretty, the time she had spent with Isabel laying it the sun was well spent, with her dark hair and deep brown eyes, her suntanned complexion gave her a very exotic look that he really like. He smiled when he thought about their dancing together, he really liked holding her in his arms, he shook his head, slipping the master of ceremony fifty bucks to announce for the rest of the wedding party to join the bride and groom for a dance was the best money he had ever spent he thought to himself. The only thing that he didn’t like about the night was her “friend” Alex; he didn’t like him at all. Liz kept hanging on his arm, he figured they must be dating, why else would the guy fly all the way to Roswell, New Mexico just to go to a friends wedding. No there was way more going on there he decided. Max glanced at his clock and threw back the covers, and was just about to go into the shower when Isabel knocked at his door, “Hey Max you awake yet?”

He stretched and yawned, “Yeah it’s open come on in.” he told her.

Isabel was already dressed for the day when she came into his room, “You’re a bum, its already past 10:00” she told him as she stood just inside his door way.

Max shrugged his shoulders, “so did you just come in here to tell me the time or do you actually want something.”

“Yes I actually wanted to see if you want to come and hang out with Liz and her friends today, we are going to the mall and then catch a movie later.” She told him.

Max shook his head, “no I am going to go hang out with Michael and Kyle.” He told her then asked, “Hey who’s idea was it to ask me to go along?”

Isabel laughed, “It was mine, why?”

Max shrugged his shoulders again, “No it’s nothing I just wondered….so what did Liz say when you said you where going to ask me to come along?” he asked trying to seem disinterested.

“She didn’t say anything…” Isabel laughed.

“Oh so she didn’t really want me to come then?” he said sounding a bit disappointed.

“Oh my gosh Max, she was talking with Alex about what movie we might see, I don’t know if she even heard me when I said I was coming to ask you.” Isabel told him as she left the room.

Max shook his head, he knew it, Liz was too wrapped up in Alex to even notice him. That was fine he was better off anyway not getting involved with her now that their parents were married. After his showered he headed downstairs to grab a glass of juice and then headed out to meet up with Michael and Kyle.

Michael was sitting in his living room when Max knocked at the door, “Hey you ready to go get Kyle?” Max asked as he opened the door.

Michael shook his head, “No, he called said his dad needs him today so he can’t come.” He told him.

Max shook his head, “Oh ok, so what do you want to do then?” he asked as he walked into the house.

“I don’t know, what is Liz and her friends up too?” Michael asked.

Max shook his head, “I guess they were going to go shopping and then go to a movie.” He told him, “You really like that Maria girl ugh?”

Michael nodded, “yeah well she is alright.” He told him then added, “So you want to head over to the mall then?” he asked.

Max smiled, “Sure there isn’t anything better to do.” He said as they headed for his car.

Liz smiled as they headed into the camera shop, “Ok guys I know you all find this boring, but thank you for humoring me.” She said as headed for her dream camera. “See this camera, this is the one I want for my birthday, yes it is expensive, at a hefty nine hundred dollars but I am worth it and I am sure if you pool your money you could come very close to getting me this wonderful little baby.” She told them her voice filled with excitement.

Alex shook his head, “no not another camera I still remember last Christmas, it was like hours and hours of photos.” He complained.

Liz smiled, “I promise not to put you through that this time.” She said as they left the shop and headed toward the food court.

Isabel glanced at her watch, “SO you guys want to get something to eat before the movie?” she asked.

“Only if you’re buying.” Michael said as he walked up behind Maria and grabbed her. She jumped and let out a small scream as she spun around to see Michael and Max standing there.

“Michael, you scared me half to death, I didn’t think I would see you today?” Maria said obviously glad to see him.

Liz smiled as her eyes met with Max’s. “Hey you decided to come after all, Isabel said you had other plans.”

Max shrugged his shoulders, “Yeah well there wasn’t too much else to do, so what movie are we going to see?”

I don’t care we can see what ever you guys want to see.” Liz told them as they grabbed a booth and sat down. Max didn’t miss the fact that Alex sat down next to Liz and Isabel leaving him to sit with Michael and Maria. He watched Alex and Liz as they enter acted with each other, they seemed so at ease with one another it made him jealous. They talked about their time growing up together and how they all went to school together. Max learned that Liz was heavy into photography and especially liked taking nature shots.

“We should skip the movie and drive up to the lake, we can spend the afternoon at the lake house; and you could grab your camera and get some really great shots.” Michael told them.

Maria smiled, “That sounds like fun.” She agreed.

Liz shook her head, “Are you guys sure you want to do that, I mean your only here for another day. I don’t want you guys to be bored.” She told them.

Isabel laughed, “Oh we won’t be, we can Jet Ski’s and go swimming or water skiing, Max can show you around the lake and let you get some photos. He knows that place like the back of his hand, he was in the cub scouts and he spent all his summers up there when he was little.” She told them.

Max shook his head, “Thanks Isabel for sharing…” he said.

Liz smiled, “Is that true, could you show me around? It would be great I have not been to the lakes since we moved here and it would be fun.” She told him.

Max shrugged his shoulders, “Sure no problem.”

Maria leaned over to Michael and whispered, “So were you a scout too?” she teased.

Michael laughed, “Yeah actually I was.” He told her.

Maria smiled, “Did I ever tell you that I am a sucker for a guy in uniform.” She told him.

Isabel grabbed her stuff, “Come on lets go we can call Sara and have her throw some stuff together for us and head up to the lake now then.” After a quick trip home to change and get some food and Liz camera they all headed up to the lake. Maria rode up with Max and Michael, while Liz rode along with Isabel and Alex. She wanted to ride with Max but felt strange asking if she could and he did not ask her is she wanted to too. Liz noticed that Isabel and Alex seemed to be hitting off great and she hopped that if it did lead to anything more then friends that it wouldn’t end badly. She was doing it again she thought to her self, she was already thinking of when they would break up and worrying about the fall out instead of hoping for them to be happy and glad they seemed to be getting along. It wasn’t long before they arrived at the lake and headed into the house, Liz loved the place it was right on the lake and had a very homey feel about it. They had their own private beach and a boat launch for Phillips boat and for the Jet Ski’s. Liz walked out back to the beach and began taking photos. Max followed her while the others ate the lunch that Sara had prepared. Max watched her as she snapped pictures. “Its really beautiful here, I always loved coming here when I was a kid.” He told her.

Liz turned to and smiled, “I can see why, this place is amazing. How much property does your dad own?” she asked.

“Almost a full acre of land, after lunch I can show some great spots if you don’t mind hiking just a bit.” He told her.

“Sounds great.” She told him as they went back inside to eat lunch. After having some cold fried chicken and soda, with potato salad, Liz was ready to go. Max smiled, “I’m almost done, be right with you.” He said as he finished eating.

Liz shook her head, “Don’t worry about it, I will wait outside for you.” She told him

Maria and Michael were already down by the water, goofing around when she came out. Isabel was getting the boat out from its dock for water skiing. Liz walked over to Alex and wrapped her arm around his, “So you like her?” she asked.

“I just met her yesterday but yeah I like her.” He told her.

Liz leaned her head against his shoulder, “Alex would I be being a terrible friend if I said take it slow…she is my step sister and well…” she started to say but he interrupted.

“And if we became involved with each other and then it all went horribly wrong it would be really hard because you are like related to her and how could you possibly live without me in your life, whose side would you be on, even though we just met yesterday?” he said in a teasing voice.

“Yes, well when you put it like that I sound a bit paranoid don’t I?” she laughed.

“Just a bit but I know how you are Parker and I love ya for it.” He said just as Max walked up to overhear him. Liz smiled and kissed him on the cheek, “I love you too, so go slow.” She told him. Alex shook his head and then headed toward the boat.

Liz turned to see where Max was and almost bumped into him, “Oh Max, I didn’t know you were done, are you ready?” she asked.

Max shook his head, “You know if you would rather go exploring with Alex, I understand. There are all kinds of trail around here so you two wouldn’t get lost.” He told her feeling jealous.

Liz laughed, “No, I want you to show me, besides he is out with Isabel I think they are all going water skiing.” She told him.

Max nodded and he led her off down a trail that led into the woods and away from the house and beach. “This spot I am taking you to is one of my favorite places. I found it with my mom the first year we came up here, she was great to go exploring with, she had no fear and was willing to try anything.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “Well its really wonderful here, I hope your dad doesn’t decide to sell this place…” she said with out thinking then added, “Oh I am sorry Max that sounded really bad, its just that I meant I hope my mom doesn’t try to get him to give this place up that’s all.” She said.

Max shook his head, “Its ok, I knew what you were thinking, but my dad can’t sell this property because it’s not actually his. This land, the house all of it was left to Isabel and I. My mother held the deed to this place, it has actually been in her family for along time and when she died she left it to the two of us.” He explained. “OK we have to go up for a bit now, let me help you.” He said as he climbed the incline ahead of her then reached out for her hand. Liz let him guide her through the woods and up the hill until the finally came to a clearing. She couldn’t believe how beautiful everything was. She began taking pictures of the thick green grass and huge trees. Some looked as if they had been there for decades. She zoomed in and got several shots of a family of bunnies that were busy eating some grass, “Oh Max, come here.” She whispered softly. He stepped closer and stood right next to her, she pointed towards the large fallen tree trunk with the two bunnies sitting in the grass several feet in front of them. She held up the camera, “Look through here, see the babies, they are near the mommy bunny.” She whispered softly.

Max could see now what she was talking about there were two rabbits sitting in the grass with at least five or six smaller bunnies munching on the grass and enjoying the afternoon sun. “I see, that’s cool, looks like the whole family is having lunch.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “This place is amazing Max, thanks for sharing it with me.”

“This is nothing, come on.” He told her as they climbed up even further to the top of the mountain. Liz couldn’t believe her eyes it was gorgeous up here, the view was incredible and you could see for ever.

“I had no idea there was anything like this here, I thought New Mexico was just dessert area, I had no idea there was this kind of beauty.” She told him as they stood at the highest peak and looked out over the lake and forest below.

Max stood next to her, “Most people don’t know, to the south of Roswell it is mostly just dessert and rock, but when you come north it’s actually a lot of mountains and forest.” He told her.

Liz pointed out towards the lake, “Oh look you can see the entire lake from up here, oh is so beautiful.” She said as she began snapping pictures again. There were huge pine trees that surrounded the lake. The sun was shinning so bright the water looked a brilliant blue. “I bet it’s really beautiful here in the winter time too?” Liz mentioned.

Max shook his head, “Yeah it is, we use to come up here every year to go snow sledding and to pick a tree for Christmas.”

“Oh I bet that was so much fun.” She said as took her last picture. Max walked over and stood next to her. He pointed out toward the lake. “Legend is this lake was not always here,” he told her. “The story behind how the lake got its name is a pretty cool one; seems that long ago before the settlers came to New Mexico this whole area was inhabited by two different Indian tribes, the Pueblo Indians and their enemies the Apache Indian. There was a beautiful Indian maiden from the Pueblo tribe, her name was Letta and she fell deeply in love with a young Apache warrior, his name was Juh’s. The legend has it that they would meet secretly here everyday day at this spot and make love in the warm afternoon sun. One day Letta’s father followed her curious to where his daughter was going every day and he caught the two lovers. In a fit of rage he confronted them and threatened to kill Juh’s if he ever came near his daughter again. Letta was heart broken, weeks went by and she could bare the separation no longer. She ran away to their secret spot and cried out for him to come to her. Juh heard her call in his heart and ran to be with her. Reunited once again the young lovers stood on the very edge of this mountain and called out to the spirit in the sky and begged for help, they pleaded for a way that they could be together forever and just as Letta’s father and the other warriors found them their prayer was answered. A strong gust of wind blew them both up into the sky and they were transformed into a large cloud of smoke. As her father called out his daughter’s name, rain began to fall from the cloud; it rained for many days until this lake was formed and then the cloud passed away. Letta’s father was filled with sadness at the loss of his daughter, but knew that the lake was filled with the spirit of his daughter and her lover; he knew that they were blessed by the spirit in the sky to be together forever so he named the lake Adagaue, which means love.” Max told her.

Liz stared into his eyes, “That was so beautiful Max, I love stuff like that.” She told him. Max stared into her eyes, he wanted to kiss her, to pull her into his arms and kiss her. Liz was the first to look away, she lowered her eyes, “How about if I take our picture?” she said breaking the silence between them.

Max smiled, “Sure I guess.” Then he added, “How can you take a picture of the two of us?”

Liz smiled as she walked over and sat the camera on the edge of a large rock, “Stay right there, and don’t move, I have it focused now wait just a minute.” She said as she hit the timer then walked over and stood next to him. Max smiled as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to him, “Just to make sure you’re in the shot.” He said, seconds later the camera clicked.

“I hope it comes out.” She said as she walked over and picked up her camera.

Max smiled, “You want to head back down and swim for awhile?” he asked her.

Liz nodded her head, “Yeah that would be great. Thanks again Max for bringing me here today, it was really sweet of you.”

Max didn’t say anything he helped her back down the side of the mountain and they walked back down to the beach, she was telling him about her photography and all the places she would love to visit some day. Max liked the adventurous spirit she seemed to have. He liked seeing things through her eyes, there was something about her that was special and the more time he spent with her the more he wanted to be with her always. He wondered about Alex, he had hoped maybe they weren’t that serious but he heard him say he loved her and she said it back to him. He wished that he was the one Liz was in love with, he had never felt as jealous of another guy then he did of Alex at the moment.

Liz smiled, “I will be right back, I am going to put my camera inside.” She said as she walked in and put her camera down on the counter then went back out side and down to the beach. Max was already in the water talking with Michael. Liz slipped her shoes off and then her shorts and tank top. She was wearing a pale pink bikini, it was one of the less revealing ones but still it got Max’s attention. He glanced over just as she slipped out of her shorts. She was beautiful, he had always known that she was but seeing her in so little clothing was defiantly an image that would stay with him for awhile.

“Max…Max?” Michael called his name for the third time in a row.

Max shook his head, “What, oh sorry Michael, must have water in my ears, what did you say?” he asked him.

I asked if you wanted to go water skiing. I will drive the boat if you want.” He repeated himself.

Max nodded his head, “Sure he told him,” then swam over to the boat that was docked at the pier. It was the sound of loud screaming and laughing that made him turn his attention to the beach. Alex was dragging Liz into the water. Max watched as he finally gave up trying to pull her in and scooped her up into his arms and carried her out into the water and tossed her in. Liz came right back up laughing and full of threats as she chased after him. Max motioned for Michael to go ahead as he finished putting on the ski’s, watching the two f them together was not something he wanted to do.

Sweet Sixteen

Post by James »

Here is part 7 to my Max and Liz story.
IT is rated teen/mature
I do not own Roswell
I am posting on December 23, 2005

Ok here is another part. TO answer a comment left there is more Nancy in this part (Sorry) and also yes dealing with the parents as Max and Liz grow closer is an issue and will be dealt with...although you are right Max does not care all that much what Nancy or Phillip's thoughts on the matter are :-) Also while their relationship is beginning to grow closer Liz still has alot of baggage to deal....

Sweet Sixteen…

Liz wasn’t looking forward to this huge party her mother had planned for her sixteenth birthday. There were so many people coming that she didn’t even know and she worried that her dad might feel bad since Phillip was spending so much more money on her birthday then they had done in the past. . She thought about the argument she had with her mom when the invitations went out.

“Elizabeth it has already been decided, besides Phillip and I are doing this for you. He wants you to feel like your apart of this family.” Nancy told her daughter as she sealed the last invitation.

“Mom the party I want would consist of Maria, Alex, and dad.” Liz told her. “Look at this list, I don’t know any of these people, they are business acquaintances of Philips and your friends.”

Nancy shook her head, “Elizabeth this party is going to be wonderful and you will love it, I promise.” She told her as she got up and grabbed her keys. “You know not including Isabel, Max, Phillip or I was hurtful just now.”

“Mom I didn’t mean it like that I just meant besides us I would want daddy, Alex and Maria here that’s all.” Liz told her mom.

“I have made a lot of concessions, you know how awkward it is going to be having your father here but I gave in and he is invited.” Nancy snapped at her daughter

“Mother, I was not about to celebrate my 16th birthday with out daddy, this is a big deal to him and there was no way you were going to cut him out.” Liz told her feeling her temper rise.

Nancy stopped and turned to face her, “You know I really don’t like your attitude, if you can’t be appreciative of all the wonderful things that Phillip has done for us then maybe you should just spend your summer here, you know your father would not like the way you are talking to me right now.”

Liz shook her head, “Mom I do think Phillip is very generous, but I don’t want any of this stuff. I don’t want big parties, and I defiantly don’t want you and Phillip to buy me a car.” She told her mother in a deadly serious voice.

Nancy laughed, “Now you’re just being silly, what teenage girl doesn’t want a car for her birthday.” She said as she walked out the door to mail the invitations.

Liz looked out the window, it was a nice day, the sun was shinning and the sky was bright brilliant blue. She glanced over at her clock; it was almost time for her dad’s flight to arrive. She thought about the talk she had with both Phillip and Nancy just a few days ago about not buying her a car. She made it very clear that while she thought it was very generous of Phillip and a wonderful thought that it might make her dad feel bad because there was no way that he could afford such an extravagant gift. She could tell that her mother seemed annoyed with her but Phillip seemed ok so hopefully today would be a nice day for them all.

“Liz, it’s me.” Max called through her door as he knocked.

Liz walked over and opened the door, “Oh hi.” She said surprised to see him standing there. She had seen very little of him since the wedding, it had only been two weeks, but still they were living together now and she still was only seeing him during English class. He was always up and gone before school and never home at night or on the weekends. She wondered if maybe he was avoiding her altogether.

“Dad said to come and get you, I have to go with you to pick up your dad and friends at the airport.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “Oh ok, thanks, just let me grab my jacket.” She told him as she walked over and slipped on her denim jacket over her tank top. Max didn’t say to much as they drove over to the airport. Liz tired to think of things to talk about, “So you have been busy lately. I feel like I have barely spent any time with you since the wedding.” She told him.

Max shrugged his shoulders, “Yeah well being at the house is not my favorite place to be.” He told her. Liz felt kind of hurt she wondered if it had anything to do with her.

“Oh I’m sorry.” She said softly.

Max new she misunderstood, “Liz its not you, its our parents, I just can’t deal with the newlyweds at the moment.” He told her.

“Yeah I understand.” She told him her voice filled with sympathy.

Max shifted in his seat and glanced over at her, “So I guess you’re really excited about seeing your dad, and Alex and Maria again ugh?”

Liz smiled, “yeah it’s going to be great having my dad in town for the day and then flying back home with him for the summer will be awesome.” She told him.

Max shook his head, “I wish I had some where to get away for the entire summer.” He mumbled more to him self. He wanted to ask her about Alex, if they were dated or not but he wasn’t sure he had the right to ask her such personal questions. He tried to think of a way to ask with out seeming like her was asking. “So I guess you’re excited about seeing Alex too then ugh?” he said.

Liz laughed, “Yeah of course…I think Maria is hoping to spend some time with Michael too.” She told him.

Max shook his head, “Yeah I am pretty sure he is hoping the same thing. He has only asked about when she was coming in a 100 times.”

“Wouldn’t it be funny if they got together, they seem so perfect for each other. I think it would be great.” Liz told him as they pulled in to the airport parking lot and went in.

Liz was so excited she could hardly wait to see her dad, she let out a small scream as her dad got off the plane, “Daddy….I am so happy to see you!” she cried as she wrapped her arms around him.

Max stood back as Liz hugged both Alex and Maria. He was feeling nervous about meeting Jeff, although he didn’t know why. Liz pulled her dad along by the hand, “Dad, this is Max, Max this is my father.” She told him.

Max extended his hand, “Its nice to meet you Mr. Parker, I feel as if I already know you Liz talks about you all the time.” He said trying not to sound nervous.

Jeff smiled, “Please just call me Jeff, all of Liz’s friends do.” He told him.

Max shook his head, “Alright then Jeff, if you guys want to we can go get your luggage and then head over to the car.” He offered. They talked about all the current events going on at home and Jeff explained to Liz about his new position, “Its been pretty amazing Lizzie, I could hardly believe it when Mr. Wilkerson offered me the promotion and the corner office. I was floored, of course it does mean that I have to take a few more business trips but we always wanted to see the world didn’t we.” He told her.

“Oh dad that is so great, I am so happy for you.” Liz told him. Max dropped them all off at the hotel and headed back to the house. He like Jeff Parker he seemed like a really decent guy who obviously adored his daughter. Max was amazed at the way they were together. Liz talked to him about everything and he actually seemed to be listening, and he actually seemed interested, something his own dad never really did.

It was just after six when Liz arrived back to the house with her dad, Maria and Alex. Isabel was waiting in the kitchen and motioned for Liz, “Your mother is all upset that you weren’t here when the guest started arriving so you better go upstairs and get changed.”

Liz shook her head, “Oh my gosh, it’s like 6 minutes after I can’t believe she is already freaking out. Ok Isabel thanks, would you do me a favor and show my dad around while I get ready.”

“Not a problem, Alex and I will keep him company.” She said as they walked out into the pool area. Liz hurried upstairs to change clothes, already she wished the party was over and it hadn’t even begun yet. !5 minutes later she came down the stairs, dressed in the beautiful dark green dress she picked out. She decided to leave her hair something she knew would irritate her mother. Max watched from the corner as Liz came down the stairs, she looked stunning, he hoped to find some time with her through out the evening, but expected she would probably be busy with her dad and Alex.

The evening felt like it was dragging on forever she thought as she watched people dancing. Michael and Maria had pretty much been together all night and even though she had not seen Isabel or Alex, she was pretty sure they were off together as well. She was just about to go find her dad when she saw Max and Kyle standing not to far away from her. She smiled when their eyes met, she was hoping he might ask her dance again but so far he hadn’t done that. She glanced away as he was now walking towards her.

“SO why is the birthday girl standing over here all alone in the corner?” he asked wondering where Alex was.

“No one to dance with I guess.” She said pretending to sound rejected.

”Really well where is Alex?” Max asked trying not to sound jealous.

Liz shook her head at the peculiar question, “I’m not sure actually, but I think he is around here some where. I see Michael and Maria are dancing.” She added.

Max looked over and saw her dad standing and talking with Kyle’s dad, “looks like your dad is enjoying himself.” He said.

Liz looked over towards her dad and smiled, “yeah, I’m glad too; it means a lot to me that he have a good time.”

Max smiled, “Hey how come you too haven’t had your father daughter dance?” he asked then added, “I thought that was supposed to be one of the first dances of the evening?”

Liz laughed, “More useless jeopardy information?” she asked.

Max nodded his head, “Yeah, but seriously aren’t you going to dance with your dad?”

“Well usually at this kind of party there is a father daughter dance but my mother decided that it would be to uncomfortable for Phillip if I was out there dancing with my dad and he was standing on the side watching.” Liz explained.

Max shook his head, “That’s dumb; I mean Jeff is your dad after all, not my dad.” He suddenly had a brilliant idea, “Stay here, ok.”

Liz nodded, “Why? What’s up?” she asked as he walked away. She watched him as he made his way up on the stage and over to the orchestra leader, she wondered what he was up too. After the song ended she was completely surprised to see Max take the microphone form the master of ceremony, “Excuse me…everyone can I have your attention?” he said as everyone turned to face him. “Thanks everyone, as you know we are all here this evening to wish Liz a happy birthday, she is 16 today and well no sweet 16 party would be complete without the traditional father daughter dance, so Jeff if you could join your little girl out on the dance floor…” he said. Jeff walked over and extended his arm to Liz and then escorted her to the middle of the dance floor. Everyone applauded as the orchestra played “What a wonderful world.” Max put the mic back on its stand and walked to the side near his dad and Nancy. He smiled as he walked past, Nancy was furious.

Jeff held Liz in his arms, “I can’t think of anything I would rather be doing then dancing with my princess…I am proud of you Lizzie.”

Liz smiled as tears filled her eyes, “I love you daddy.” She said softly.

Max headed back over to stand with Kyle. Liz was beautiful and she deserved to have a special moment with her dad, he knew his dad was going to say something to him later but he didn’t care. Liz was having a great time and that was all that matter.”

Alex stood with Isabel near the large oak tree, “Wow that was awesome; I know Liz was not happy about her mom’s refusing to let her have a father daughter dance tonight.” He said.

Isabel smiled, “Yeah that was very sweet of him.” She said softly as she stared into his eyes. “Liz told me about your old girlfriend Michelle… and I was just wondering if she is why…”
she started to say.

Alex smiled, “Why what?” he asked her.

“Well why you still haven’t kissed me?” she asked her voice just barely above a whisper.

Alex shook his head, “I didn’t know you wanted me to kiss you…” he said in husky voice.

Isabel wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer, “Well I do.” She told him.

Alex leaned in closer and whispered, “Well you should have what you want…” he told her as he captured her mouth in a very romantic kiss.

Max couldn’t believe how pretty Liz looked tonight, the dress Isabel helped her pick out was beautiful. He wanted to dance with her again to hold her in his arms, being with her felt so right. It was the sound of Kyle voice that interrupted his thoughts, “Oh hey man, look at that.” He pointed over to Alex and Isabel; who were kissing near the large oak tree. “Hey looks like your back in business guy, when Liz finds out she will dump him for sure.”

Max was suddenly filled with anger, how could Alex do that to Liz, especially with Isabel and on her birthday too. He looked back over and saw Jeff and Liz were finished dancing as the song came to and end. He didn’t want her to see Alex cheating on her so he headed over to Isabel.

Liz kissed her dad on the cheek, “Thanks for the dance daddy. I am going to go find Max and thank him.” She said as she headed over into the direction that she saw Max.

Max walked up and grabbed Alex by the back of the jacket, “What the hell do you think you are doing?” he said his voice filled with anger.

Alex was so shocked, so was Isabel and neither of them were sure what was happening. “Max….what the, what was that all about?” Alex asked as he jerked himself around to face Max.

Max shook his head, “What do you think you were doing just then…Liz is right over there. How do you think this was going to make her feel?”

Alex shook his head, “What are you talking about?”

Isabel was furious, “Max just stop it, what is your problem?” she snapped at him.

“My problem is you’re over here making out with Alex when Liz is right over there!” Max told them. “And you, you’re a real piece of work making out with my sister when…” he didn’t get to finish because Liz walked up.

“Max what is your problem?” she said her voice filled with anger, having witnessed Max pull Alex and Isabel apart.

Max turned to her, “I was just informing Alex what a complete jerk he is that’s what…” he said his voice filled with anger.

“You have no right to treat my friend that way, Alex isn’t being a jerk you are.” She said as she stormed off.

Max threw his hands up into the air and stormed off leaving a very confused Alex and Isabel staring at each other. “I think he thought that you and Liz were dating.” Isabel finally figured out. “And when he saw you and I kissing he was worried Liz was going ot find out and get hurt.”

Alex laughed, “I bet your right…oh man should I go set him straight?” he said.

Isabel shook her head, “No he was pretty mad, I don’t want a fight to break out let me go talk to him.” She said just as Nancy asked for everyone to come inside so Liz could open her gifts. Everyone gathered into the main living room and watched as Liz opened her gifts, she still felt angry with Max but tried not to show it. She couldn’t believe the way he reacted to Isabel and Alex being together. Obliviously he thought that her friends weren’t good enough for his sister. She tried to push all thoughts of Max out of her mind as she opened her gift from her dad, it was the new Olympus digital camera she wanted, it was so expensive and she knew he spent a lot of money on it. It would be great for her photography class. “Oh daddy thanks so much for getting me this. I just love it.” She told him.

“I thought you might.” He told her as he hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. “That’s not all Princesses, this summer you and I are taking a trip to Scotland, so you can use that new camera!” he whispered to her.

Liz was so excited she could hardly believe it. “Dad that’s awesome!” she told him.

Nancy interrupted, “alright now its time to open Phillips and my gift to you.” She said as Phillip pulled a small box out of his pocket and held it up for everyone to see, “Now we thought long and hard about what we should get Elizabeth for her 16th birthday and well in the end it came down to the most obvious choice, hope you like it.” He said so everyone could hear as he handed her the gift.

Liz smiled and opened the box, inside was a key, and her heart sank. They got her a car even though she asked them to wait they did it anyway. Phillip laughed, “Looks like I finally figured out a way to make a teenage girl speechless.” He teased as everyone laughed.

“Come on Elizabeth tell everyone what it is.” Nancy told her.

Liz smiled politely and held up the key, “It’s a car key.” She said looking over at her dad.

Phillip laughed, “That’s not just any key that is a key to a brand new black Mustang Convertible parked right out back.” He announced to everyone. The guest all cheered and applauded. Liz smiled and thanked her mom and then Phillip, “thanks mom, thank you Phillip that was really very nice of you both.” She said trying not to sound ungrateful. After the rest of the presents were opened and the guest went back to mingling with one another Liz went over to her dad, “Hey dad, I wanted you to know that the car is not that big a deal to me, I really love the camera.” She told him.

Jeff kissed his daughter, “I know that Lizzie.” Then he added, “Listen princess, I want you to know that I am not upset about you getting this car, it’s a nice car…its just that I always felt that a car should be something that your mother and I could help you with, having a car can be a lot of responsibility and some times that responsibility is best earned through working and helping to buy the car yourself, at least that is the lesson that grandpa and grandma always taught me.” He told her.

“I know daddy.” She understood what he was trying to tell her and she loved him for it.

Jeff smiled as he hugged his daughter good night, “Listen Lizzie, will you be terribly upset if I head back over to the hotel, I am really tired it has been a long day.”

“No dad not at all. I will be ready to go early tomorrow and I am so looking forward to spending some time together.” Liz told him, “We can still take our trip and you can give me some pointers on how to use my new camera.”

“I love you princess, and Happy Birthday!” he told her as he left.

Liz turned to see her mother standing there, she didn’t say anything, she just headed inside, but Nancy stopped her, “Elizabeth, Phillip would like to have you come out back and have some photo’s taken with your new car.” She told her.

“I can’t believe you did this mother, even for you this is a new low.” She said as she walked past her mom.

Nancy followed her into the kitchen and closed the door for privacy, “Elizabeth Parker, don’t tell me you’re upset with me about your gift?” she said.

Liz stopped, “Of course I am, mom I told you and Phillip both no car, I told you it would make dad feel bad, he can’t afford that kind of a gift.” She reminded her mother.

“He is fine; when Phillip called him and explained it all to him he was fine.” Nancy told her.

Liz was horrified for her father, “Mom please don’t tell me that Phillip actually called daddy and told him that he was buying this car for me…” she said in disbelief.

“Of course he did, what was he suppose to do after you asked him not to buy the car he had no choice but to talk to your father.” Nancy told her.

Liz shook her head, she was so angry she wanted to scream, “He was suppose to respect what I had asked him and not buy the car…” she told her mother.

“Elizabeth you need your own car, I don’t have time to be driving you everywhere and besides Phillip really wanted to do this for you.” Her mom said.

“He didn’t do this for me; he did this so he could show off in front of all his friends about how much money he has.” Liz told her.

Nancy shook her head in frustration, “That is not true; he really wanted to do something special for your 16 birthday.”

“Yeah mom exactly, don’t you think daddy wanted to do something special for me, that’s why he bought me this expensive camera I have been asking for.” Liz told her.

“What normal 16 year old wants a camera over a car?” Nancy snapped back, “Besides taking pictures is just a hobby for you, it’s not like your going to make a career of it.”

Liz threw her arms up in the air in frustration, “What does that have to do with anything…and what if I did decided to make a career of taking pictures, its my life remember.”

Nancy let out a heavy sigh, “Look I am not going to argue with you about this, you will go out and take family pictures and enjoy the rest of this party or else I will send Maria, Alex and your father home tomorrow and you will spend your summer here.” She threatened her.

Liz glared at her mom, “You know what I am going to avoid any big scene, but not for your sake…I am going to do it for daddy, he has been humiliated enough for one evening and I don’t want to give any of these people anything to gossip about.” She said as she headed for the door, “Oh and mother, I am also going to have daddy talk to his lawyer….I am sick of your threats!” she told her, leaving her mother speechless for the very first time.

After what seemed like another endless picture taking session Liz headed out into the garden. It was a beautiful night, the moon was full and its soft light bathed everything in a shimmering glow; she sniffled in and wiped away some tears. Why did her mother and Phillip, have to do such an insensitive thing, she had explained to both of them about not wanting the car. The look on her fathers face earlier in the evening said it all. He felt terrible at having not been able to give her a car him self and for not being a part of such an important thing in her life; her mother had effectively excluded him again.

“Liz…Lizzie?” Max called out as he walked toward her.

Liz turned around to see Max heading toward her, “What do you want Max?” she asked still feeling angry over his remarks about Alex.

“I wanted to make sure you were alright.” He told her feeling bad about they way things had happened.

Liz shrugged her shoulders, “Well now you know that I am fine so please leave me alone.” She told him as she turned back away from him.

Max walked over and turned her to face him, “Look, I know I acted like a jerk before about Alex, I know that I shouldn’t have said those things to you…I’m sorry.” He told her.

Liz shook her head, “Well you should be, Alex is one of my very best friends and you had no right to say those things about him.” She snapped at him, “Besides if he wants to date Isabel and she likes him what concern is it to you.”

Max let out a heavy sigh, “I was angry about him kissing Isabel because I thought you and he were dating.” Max told her.

Liz shook her head feeling even more confused, “So what Alex is good enough to date me but he’s not good enough to date Isabel?”

Max shook his head no, “That’s not what I meant, I don’t want him dating you, I don’t want any other guy dating you, not now not ever.” He told her.

Liz narrowed her eyes, “What is this some kind of big brother kick that your on then, cause I don’t understand…” she said still confused.

Max threw his arms up in the air in exasperation, “Liz you are the most frustrating girl I have ever known.” He told her.

Liz was angry now, “Well thanks for telling me that, now if you don’t mind I have had a really rotten day thanks to my mother’s selfishness yet again and your erratic and confusing behavior is just not something I can deal with right now.” She told him as she walked away.

Max chased after her and grabbed her by the arm, “Lizzie, the reason I was angry at Alex for kissing Isabel is because I thought he was cheating on you… I didn’t want you to walk in on them and get hurt.” He told her then added, “As much as I hated the idea of you being with him, I didn’t want you to get hurt like that.” He told her finally.

Liz looked into his eyes, “Oh…well Max, Alex and I are just friends, that’s all just friends.” She told him.

“I know that now…now that I have made a complete fool of myself I know.” He told her.

Liz’s tone softened as she asked, “So why did you hate the idea of him and I dating?”

Max pulled her closer to him and whispered softly, “Because I hate the idea of you being with any other guy.”

Liz leaned in closer to him and whispered back, “Why Max?”

He stared into her eyes for along time and then lowered his mouth just inches above hers and whispered, “Because I want to be the only guy your with.” He told her then he captured her lips with his and pulled her closer into his arms. Liz couldn’t believe how right it felt to have him hold her, to have him kiss her. She wrapped her arms around his neck as their kiss deepened. As there kiss came to and end Liz stared into his eyes, “Max I like you…I do but this is all so strange?” She whispered.

Max held her in his arms, “Why?” he asked confused by the statement.

Liz shook her head, “Because your dad is married to my mother, because we live in the same house and most of because I highly doubt that my dad is going to allow his little girl to keep on living in the same house with her boyfriend.” She told him.

Max smiled, “Did you just call me your boyfriend?” he asked.

Liz suddenly felt very embarrassed, “Yeah I guess I did?” Max leaned in and kissed her again. He pulled her closer and held her in his arms not wanting to let her go. She was beautiful, witty, charming, intelligent, and more then anything he wanted to be with her always. Max continued giving her soft gentle kisses all around her mouth as he whispered, “Lizzie I know that there is some stuff we have to work out but I want to be with you and I think you want that too don’t you?” he asked her.

A Cowardly Get Away

Post by James »

This a Max and Liz story not Roswell related as in it does not follow the show.
Its rated Teen/mature
i do not own roswell
it is Feb. 10, 2006

First let me say that I am sorry from the bottom of my little ol cowboy heart, I know it has been forever since I posted last but life has its way of throwing drama in our path and some times you just have to deal with it. Anyway if anyone is still interested reading this little love story of mine here is the next chapter.....

A cowardly get away…

Liz woke up early the next morning and drove herself over to her father’s hotel, she never really did answer Max question directly and in all honesty she wanted to make a hasty get away before he got up this morning. She knew she was taking the coward’s way out but she just wasn’t sure what to say to him at the moment. She did like him a lot but in her heart she was terrified to let it go any further then that, she had witnessed first hand the king of heart ache and pain that came from giving your heart to another person. Her mom and dad were a perfect example of that. She watched for years as her father tried to make her mom happy only have it thrown back in his face every time. She finished writing Max a note then carefully slipped it under his door before she headed down stairs and over to the hotel. She took in a deep breath and whispered a silent prayer that Max would understand her not saying good bye and that more then anything he wouldn’t hate her for chickening out this way.

Max rolled over as his alarm went off for the third time, it was already past 9:00. He stretched and yawned then crawled out of bed and headed towards his bathroom when a small envelope on the floor caught his attention, he walked over and picked it up recognizing Liz handwriting he sat back down on his bed and opened it up. He let out a heavy sigh as he read over what she had written,

Max

About last nights kiss, it was perfect in every way possible and it meant the world to me so it’s really difficult for me to write to you what I am about to write. After a very long restless night I realize that as much as I like you …and I do like you; this will never work between us. There are just too many complications and I am not sure that we can over come them or if we should even try? Your dad…my mom….my dad they would all freak about us dating and then what if it didn’t work out between us, I mean that would be so awkward…anyway please know that its not you, your wonderful, sweet, intelligent, caring guy that…well that means a lot to me but I just can’t do this. I am sorry, I hope you don’t hate me and I hope you will understand.

See you in the fall
Lizzie

Max laid back against his head board and let out a heavy sigh, no sense in looking in her room he knew she was already gone. He shook his head, he was sure that she wanted to be with him just as much as he did her, could he have been wrong, he wondered. He opened the note and read it several more times before putting it in his drawer and heading for his bathroom. He thought about the kiss they shared, he knew it meant something to her and truthfully he was surprised at how much it had meant to him, no there was something there between them and he wasn’t about to let her being afraid stop him. As he took his shower and got dressed he decided to talk to Michael and Isabel, he was already thinking of plan to catch Liz before she had any chances to build up more walls between them.

Liz sat next to Maria on the plane, “Well did Michael say he would call you or anything?” she asked.

Maria smiled, “Yeah we exchanged numbers and email. I really like him Liz, he is so different then other guys I have dated.”

Liz smiled, “That’s awesome Maria I am so happy for you.” She told her.

Maria could tell Liz was holding something back, she leaned over and whispered, “Alright Parker spill it right now?” she demanded.

Liz shook her head and played innocent, “What are you talking about? Spill what?” she said.

Maria wouldn’t relent, “I know something happened between you and Max last night, and your not telling me so come on spill it.” She told her.

Liz leaned back and closed her eyes, “I have no idea what you’re talking about?” she said trying to ignore Marias demanding stare.

“Elizabeth Parker, I am your best friend and we don’t keep secrets so tell me what happened and don’t pretend that you don’t know what I am talking about because I know you to well girl. You have been way to quite since last night, and then you were at the hotel this morning before the sun even came up so what gives?” Maria told her.

Liz smiled, “Alright if I tell you will you please promise not to lecture me?” she asked her.

Maria shook her head, “No way, you know me to well I always say it like it is.”

“Last night as the party was ending, Max kissed me.” Liz told her.

Maria smiled, “Oh my gosh that’s great, I had a feeling about him.”

Liz laughed, “well you were right."

Maria smiled, “so how was your first kiss?” she asked.

Liz smiled, “It was perfect, I mean really truly perfect…I know it sounds corny but when he kissed me it was almost as if we were meant to be…like the fates had planned to bring the two of us together.” She told her as she thought about the way his arms felt holding her and his lips pressed gently against her own.

Maria narrowed her eyes, “Who are you? What have you done with my friend?” she asked.

“What that’s supposed to mean?” Liz asked feeling a bit annoyed.

“Just that you don’t sound like the Liz I know, you sound like a girl in love.” She told her.

Liz laughed, “No not in love but I do like him …” she admitted.

“Ok so you like him, what now? Are you two going to start dating?” she asked.

Liz felt sad inside as she answered, “No” she shook her head, “No I left him a note this morning telling him that while I thought the kiss was amazing we can’t go any further with this.” She explained.

Maria shook her head; “Now that sounds more like the Liz Parker I know…”she said then asked, “Why did you do that? Why did you blow this off with out even giving it a chance to see what might happen?” she asked feeling sad for her friend.

“Because Maria its to complicated, I mean we live in the same house, what do you think is going to happen when we break up…it will be really weird, he’ll always be there…no it just won’t work.” She told her confident in her decision.

Maria let out a heavy sigh, “Oh my gosh Liz you haven’t even started dated and already your broke up, why do you do that…why do you always sabotage any relationship with a guy before it every has a chance to happen?”

“I don’t do that Maria.” She defended her actions.

“Yes you do, remember last summer, that guy Matthew Hicks, you totally blew him off and he was a really nice guy.” Maria reminded her.

“Yeah so nice that a mere day after I told him no I would not go out with him he was asking Bonnie Thomas out.” Liz told her then added; “Besides this is completely different.”

Maria stared into her friends eyes, “Why is this so different?” she asked.

“Because I really really like him…and well I just don’t know if I could take having him hate me some day. I would rather be his friend then have us end up enemies.” She told her sadly.

Maria shook her head in frustration, “Elizabeth Parker, you are not your mother and Max is not you dad…maybe you two are suppose to be together, maybe the fates have been working all this time in the background to bring you and him to this very point in your life so that you can get together and be this like amazingly in love couple?” she told her.

Max waited until after his dad and Nancy left the house to approach Isabel with his idea, “So I guess you and Alex kind of like each other ugh?” he asked.

Isabel shook her head, “After last night Max, I don’t know if I want to talk to you about that subject.” She told him.

“I said I was sorry, besides I think Alex is a great guy for you.” Max told her then added “just not for Liz.”

Isabel smiled, “I thought that might have been the problem, Alex and Liz aren’t dating Max, they never have…they are only friends.” She told him.

Max laughed, “I know that now, Liz set me straight.” He told her.

Isabel sipped her tea, “So you really like Liz a lot ugh?”

Max shrugged his shoulders, “I like her, she’s ok.” He said making light of his true feelings.

Isabel laughed, “Yeah right, you just about knock Alex out last night all because she’s “ok”…”

“Well it doesn’t really matter how much I like her or not because she doesn’t want to have anything to do with me.” Max told her.

Isabel narrowed her eyes, “really, she said that?” she asked feeling confused.

Max shook his head, “Let’s just say that I think she needs more convincing that this could work out between the two of us.”

“Why do I have the feeling you have a plan and you want my help with it?” Isabel asked him suspiciously.

“Because I do have a plan and I will need your help with it.” Max told her as he poured himself a glass of juice.

“Ok what is this plan of yours and how do I fit in?” Isabel asked.

“Well you know how dad and Nancy are taking that month long cruise?” Max told her.

“yes I am aware of it?” Isabel told him.

“Well I want you to go to dad and Nancy and tell them that you would like to take a trip to see Alex and that you want me to come along as a chaperone.” He told her.

Isabel laughed, “that’s funny you as my chaperone.” She teased, “So by me telling them that I want you to come along they don’t get suspicious about you having feelings for Liz is that the idea?”

“Pretty much….I don’t want them to know that Liz and I are involved in any way just yet so will you help me?” Max told her.

Isabel shook her head, “You know Max, it is kind of a strange situation…I mean you two are step brother and sister?” she reminded him, “You need to take things slow and be careful ok.”

“Isabel I really like Liz and trust me I would be the last guy in the world that would ever do anything to hurt her.” He told her truthfully, “so will you help me?” he asked.

Isabel smiled, “Actually I think it would be fun to go spend some time with Alex and so yeah I will talk to dad and Nancy.” She told him

“Good, I am going to go call Michael. I am sure he will want to see Maria too so this will work out great.” Max told her.

Isabel grabbed his arm and pulled him back, “What about Kyle, isn’t he going to be bummed, you guys always hang out every summer together, won’t he be upset being left out?” she asked him.

“No he has football camp this summer so he will be gone anyway.” Max told her then headed upstairs to call Michael.

Isabel finished her tea and headed up stairs, she could tell that Max was eager to spend time with Liz she just hoped for his sake that Liz would be as eager to see Max? She decided to give Alex a call and do a little fishing for some information.

This is a Max and Liz love story that is not based around the show.
I do not own Roswell
Posting my new part on 02/16/06
Rated TEEN/MATURE

Thanks to everyone who left some feed back ;-)
As always it is nice ot get input. SO my life is upside down right now, which tends to make it difficult to type. The love of my life has moved very far away from me and while she insists that long distance relationships can work out, I am not so sure. Perhaps this is the final parting of our ways and for now it is very raw and hurts. I had asked her to stay and to marry me, but the enticeing new job was just something she couldn't pace on right now...please before all you lovely ladies flame me for not understanding, I do understand her desire for this job and wanting to take a chance its just that it is a few thousand miles away from me and well realistically I do not hold out much hope that we will indeed find our way back to each other. I am seeing love as very bitter sweet these days

Anyway enough of the boring on to the story

Company

Liz sat in her window seat watching the rain as it poured down. Her dad was at work and the house was completely quite except for the steady sound of the rain as it beat against the roof. She closed her eyes and thought about Max for the 10th time that afternoon. She had thought he might call her, but it had been 7 long days since she arrived home with her dad and no phone calls. She hoped he wasn’t angry with her for running away like she did. Several times she picked up the phone to call him but forced herself not to. She let out a heavy sigh, “Why did life have to be so hard?” she thought to her self. She was just about to walk over and pick up the phone to call Maria when she heard the door bell ring.

Max was actually very nervous about the way she was going to react to seeing him on her front porch but he was determined not to let Liz get away from him. He didn’t have long to wait for the surprise look on her face as she opened the door said everything, “Hey”
He said softly.

Liz eyes grew wide with shock, “Max?” she said surprised to see him standing there in front of her. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

Max smiled and walked in closing the door behind him, he looked into her beautiful eyes and with out thinking he reached out for her and pulled her into his arms. He leaned forward and gently kissed her mouth and then left tiny little kisses across her cheek and down her neck to her ear. Liz’s head was spinning, partly from the wave of emotion each tiny little kiss was causing to reverberate through her body and partly because she was trying to comprehend what was happening, “Um Max …” she whispered softly as he continued nibbling and kissing her neck and ear, “did you get my letter?” she moaned.

Max nodded his head and pulled her closer to him, “I got it.” He said in soft husky voice.

Liz felt weak, his kisses having an amazing effect on her, “Oh…so you’re not angry at me then?” she said feeling completely under his control.

Max pulled his head back and smiled; “No not at all angry…” he said then captured her lips with his own. Liz melted into his embrace and without even thinking her hands instinctively went up behind his head, pulling him even closer to her. She was so wrapped up in the moment that she almost completely forgot that she had decided that the two of them together was not a good idea. With all her strength she forced herself to return to reason and ended their kiss. Her breathing ragged and her heart pounding she gently pushed herself away from him and brushed the hair from her face, “Max, you can’t just show up and expect me to just melt into your arms…I meant what I wrote in my letter.” She said not sounding very convincing.

Max laughed softly, as he walked over to her and gently placed his hand on the back of her neck, staring into her dark brown eyes, he whispered, “Lizzie I know your afraid, I am too, but I care about you and I am not giving up, so unless you can tell me that kiss we just shared didn’t mean anything to you, then I am here for as long as it takes until you and I are together.” He told her.

Liz was just about to protest when he leaned in and captured her mouth again with his. She could feel her heart pounding and her pulse racing, she wanted more then anything to be in his arms. She moaned softly as he pressed his body closer to hers. This time it was Max who pulled away, “See you want this too, admit it?” he whispered softly his mouth just inches away from hers.

Liz shook her head, “Max its just all happening so fast and I’m really confused…” she started to tell him.

Max leaned his forehead against hers and smiled, “there is nothing to be confused about, we will take things slow…I promise, ok?”

Before she could get a chance to answer the sound of the garage door opening interrupted their conversation. Liz pulled herself free from his embrace and shook her head, “that’s my dad, he must be home from work already…how am I going to explain you being here? He will know something is up for sure?” Liz said her voiced filled with panic.

Max laughed and shook his head, “No he won’t just come over and sit down, it will be fine.” He said as he sat down in the oversized chair and motioned for her to sit down on the couch. Moments latter Jeff walked in through the kitchen door, “Lizzie honey, do you have company? There is a car out front that I did not recognize?” he said as he walked into the living room.

Max stood up and walked over to him, “Mr. Parker, it’s good to see you again?” he said as he extended his hand.

Jeff shook hands with him and smiled, “Max this is a surprise when did you get in?” he asked.

Max smiled, “Just a little while ago sir, that’s actually my rental cal out front. Isabel and Michael are here with me as well.” He explained.

“Daddy, Isabel and Alex are dating and I think Maria and Michael are too.” Liz told her dad.

“Yes, and my dad didn’t want Isabel coming alone so he volunteered me to come with her.” Max told him. “I just thought I would stop by here and say hi and see if the two of you would like to join us all for dinner this evening…my treat?”

Jeff smiled, “Sounds good to me, how about you Lizzie want a break from my terrible cooking?” he teased her.

Liz smiled, “dad your cooking is not terrible but yeah it will be fun to go out.” She said.

Jeff sat down on the couch next to Liz, “so Max how long the three of you visiting for anyway?” he asked.

“The entire month actually, my dad and Nancy are taking a cruise; we are staying at the Ballinger’s resort hotel while we are here.” He told him.

“Oh that’s a really nice place, lots to do there, great family vacation spot.” Jeff commented.

“I have been there a few times, there Italian restaurant is really good, and they have the best garlic and cheese bread you will ever eat in your life.” Liz told him.

“Sounds good, how about we go there tonight then?” Max offered.

“Sure, let me just go get cleaned up, I will be back down in a few minutes.” Jeff told them.

Max smiled, “I’m going to call Isabel and let them know where we are eating ok?” he said as he took out his cell phone.

Liz shook her head, “I guess I will go get cleaned up too, can’t really go like this.” She said pointing at her pale pink tank top and shorts.

Max watched her as she headed up the stairs. He like the short, shorts and that tight tank top wasn’t too bad either, he thought to himself. After he finished calling both Isabel and Michael he sat back down and waited for Liz and her father to return. Jeff was the first one to come down, “I guess Lizzie is still getting ready ugh.” He told Max.

“Yeah, I think so.” Max replied.

“This actually works out nicely you all coming into town; it will give Lizzie some thing to do while I am away these next few weeks.” Jeff told him as he sat down across from Max.

“OH are you going out of town?” Max asked.

“Yes, my boss is sending me to Vancouver for a week and then I need to be in New York for a few days after that. I felt bad that Liz would have to be on her own but now she will have you and Isabel to keep her company as well as Alex and Maria.” Jeff told him.

“Yeah it will be great, Liz can show us around and we can hang out at the pool at the hotel too.” Max offered.

“I’m ready finally.” Liz said as she came back down stairs.

Max looked up and his breath caught in his throat, she looked gorgeous, he thought to himself. He had to keep in under control in front of Mr. Parker…react as if it were Isabel, he reminded himself. “Finally we were wondering if you had gotten lost,” he told her teasingly.

“Very funny, you take twice as much time as I do to get ready for things so just be quiet.” Liz told him as she stuck out her tongue at him.

“Yeah but at least I look really good when I am finished.” He joked with her.

Jeff laughed and walked over to kiss Liz on the check, “Nonsense you are beautiful as always, Max is just teasing you princess.” He told her then added, “Max why don’t you drive Lizzie over to the restaurant and I will follow in my car, I probably won’t be able to stay out as late as you young folk…” he told them as they left the house.

Liz headed out to the rental car as Max followed behind her. She did look beautiful; he loved the way her hair cascaded down around her shoulders. She was wearing a soft white summer dress and a pale pink sweater that showed off her very beautiful tanned legs. “You are not making this very easy for me to keep my hands off of you…you look gorgeous.” He whispered into her ear softly as he opened her car door for her.

Liz smiled glad he finally noticed the outfit she picked out, “Oh I didn’t think you liked my outfit considering what you just said before.” She reminded him.

“I just said that because of your dad…you look beautiful but then you always do.” He told her.

Liz smiled at him and blushed a bright red, “Thank you Max.” Contended that her outfit had the effect on him she was hoping for.

“Michael said that he and Maria would be picking up Alex and Isabel, and then they are going to meet up with us there.” Max told her as he drove them to the hotel.

“I over heard you and my dad talking before I came down what were you talking about?” She asked.

“Well he was telling me about his up coming business trip and how nice it would be to have Isabel, Michael, and I in town while he is away.” He told her.

“Oh.” Was all Liz said? She suddenly felt uncomfortable with her dad leaving and Max being in town but she wasn’t really sure why. She glanced over at him and then quickly looked away, he was so handsome, she loved his dark hair, and sexy eyes. She also liked the fact that he was smart, so many guys that she knew where either good looking and dumb or really smart and only interested in Star Trek…Max was also very charming and she needed to be careful not to loose her head or her heart to fast where he was concerned. She looked in his direction again, she really did like him but doubts kept creeping back in and she could feel the struggling with in her heart began all over again. It was the sound of Max voice that finally interrupted her thoughts, “Lizzie, are you ok?” he asked as he stood there with the car door open waiting for her to get out.

Liz shook her head she had been so deep in thought that she didn’t even notice that they had arrived, “Oh Max, I am sorry. I was totally lost in thought.” She said as she got out of the car.

Max smiled and whispered, “Good thoughts I hope?” he asked.

Liz didn’t say anything more as she followed him into the restaurant. Dinner seemed to fly by, they spent time talking and of course Jeff told all sorts of lovely embarrassing stories about Liz that made her turn beet red several times. After dessert Michael and Maria, along with Alex and Isabel headed for the dance floor leaving Max, Liz and her father at the table.

“Max you should dance with Lizzie, she loves to dance, don’t you princess?” Jeff suggested.

Liz looked over at Max and smiled, “Max doesn’t like to dance daddy, says he has two left feet.” She teased him.

Max shook his head, “It’s true I am not the best dancer.” He admitted.

“Oh you’ll be fine besides if you don’t dance with her, I think that young man over there is thinking of asking her.” Jeff told them as he nonchalantly pointed over to a table not far from them where a handsome young man was sitting and staring directly at Liz. Max glanced over and could see by the way he was looking at her that he was indeed contemplating that very idea. “Well I guess I can do my part as a big brother and rescue you from the likes of him…come on” Max offered.

Liz laughed, “Maybe I don’t want to be rescued, he is after all kind of cute.” She teased.

“Trust me you don’t want to dance with him.” Max told her.

“And why would I not want to dance with him?” Liz asked.

“Because he had the garlic pasta and garlic bread on top of that, not a good idea when you’re slow dancing.” Max told her.

Liz and Jeff both laughed as Max escorted her out to the dance floor. He pulled her into his arms but not to closely. “I actually wanted to ask you to dance.” Max told her softly.

Liz laughed, “Sure you did…” she teased him.

“No I was thinking about it, I was just not sure if I should, I didn’t know what your dad would think that’s why I hesitated.” Max told her.

Liz glanced over at her dad who was sipping his coffee and talking with the waitress, “Actually I think he is preoccupied at the moment.” She told him.

Max glanced over to see what she meant and smiled, then asked, “Does it bother you to see him talking with another woman?”

Liz shrugged her shoulders, “No not really, I don’t want my dad to spend the rest of his life alone if he is able to find someone and be happy then I want that for him.” Liz explained then added; “Besides my mother is the one who walked out not him.”

“I know it’s a sore subject for you….” Max said softly then added, “Sorry.”

Liz smiled touched by his concern for her, “Its ok Max really…it’s an old hurt but time is healing it.” She told him. They danced the rest of the song in quiet, she like being in his arms and having him hold her. In a strange way it made her feel both safe and yet it thrilled and excited her as well. As the song ended they made there way back over to the table Jeff was getting ready to leave. “Well princess, I am all tired out, if you all will excuse me I am going to head home and to bed…” he told them as he kissed Liz goodnight.

“Ok daddy, I won’t be too late.” She told him.

Liz had a really good time, they danced and Max was very attentive and romantic once her father had left. She liked being with him but a part of her felt guilty for not being completely honest with her dad, she had always told him everything and being deceptive with him was not something she liked doing. She was quite during the ride home, and Max noticed the change in her mood right away, “Hey Lizzie is something wrong?” he ask as he took her hand in his.

Liz let out a small sigh, “Max, tonight has been really wonderful …” she started to say then stopped.

“But …come on tell me; something is bothering you I can tell.” He told her.

Liz shook her head, “Yeah actually something is bothering me, it’s my dad…I don’t like lying to him.” She admitted.

Max glanced over at her and then back to the road, “I know but it’s just for now, I mean its just so we don’t have to deal with parents we can concentrate on you and I first.” He told her.

Liz shook her head, “I know Max but that’s just it, this is a big deal…a big part of my life and I want to share it with my dad, I always share stuff with him and I can’t because your…because your you.” She told him. “Don’t you see that is a big problem right there, I mean we are living in the same house and are parents are married? If this doesn’t work out for us then what….?” She said feeling confused.

Max pulled the car up in front of her house and parked, “Lizzie I know this is hard for you and I know your afraid but I think we have something between us that could be really special…I just want to give it a chance.” He said as he cupped her face with his hand. “I don’t know what is going to happen between us but I know that I care enough about you to take a chance and find out.”

Liz stared into his beautiful eyes, “I want to too, I do but I just keep thinking of all the things that can go wrong…I need time Max.” she told him as she got out of the car and headed into the house.

Max shook his head in frustration, “Nancy really did do a number on you Liz.” He mumbled to himself as he watched her go inside. He let out a heavy sigh as he headed back over to the hotel.

Liz unlocked the door and headed strait upstairs, she felt really exhausted and just wanted to drop. She sniffled in several times and wiped away a few stray tears as they rolled down her cheek. After changing into her PJ’s she flipped on her stereo and sat down at her window seat. She looked up and saw the full moon, it was beautiful with is light radiating down on the trees and the flower gardens just beneath her window. She wished that stupid little voice in her head that kept taunting her where Max was concerned would just go away but try as she might she couldn’t seem to quell the warnings that kept ringing in her ears. She thought about her mom and dad, and the way they were together, she tried really hard to remember a time when they were happy but she honestly couldn’t. Her mom always seemed distant, almost as if she longed to be some place else. She closed her eyes and remembered the time her dad and her went shopping for a gift for her mom for Valentines Day, they were so excited to give it to her, it was a locket with a single diamond stud in the center, and her dad had inscribed “To my dearest wife, owner of my heart and love of my life.” Liz watched as her mom opened the gift and then smiled that dissatisfied smiled she had and mumbled, “Oh…well thank you. It’s very nice,” Liz watched as her mom placed the locket back into the box not ever opening it to see the family picture of the three of them tucked away inside. She remembered the look of sadness on her dads face as he smiled trying to pretend he wasn’t hurt by Nancy’s dismissal yet again. She just didn’t want to go through that kind of pain and rejection. As she wiped her eyes again she heard a soft knock on her door, “Lizzie are you still awake?” her dad asked through the door.

“”Oh daddy, come in.” she said as she wiped her eyes and sniffled in. She sat up and smiled, “I didn’t mean to wake you up?”

Jeff smiled, “You didn’t, the pasta primavera did, I must be getting older, can’t handle all those rich foods.” He said as he sipped a glass of warm milk.

Liz smiled, sorry you’re not feeling well.” She said softly.

“Don’t you worry; I will be fine, so tell me how the rest of the evening went…did you enjoy yourself?” he asked.

Liz shook her head, “Yeah it was fun.” She told him.

Jeff sat down next to her, “SO why then do you seem so sad if you had a nice time?” he asked her.

“Daddy…Max didn’t come here just because of Isabel, he came to see me.” She told him truthfully.

Jeff shook his head, “I know.” Was all he said?

Liz stared at him not sure he was understanding what she was trying to tell him, “No I mean he came to see me, as in spend time with me…like as in dating me.” She told him.

Jeff smiled, “Yes Lizzie I know.” He told her.

“You knew all along, but how?” she asked.

Jeff laughed, “Well it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out, I knew he liked you at your birthday party, the way he looked at you, he is a young man who is much enamored with you.” He told her softly.

Liz smiled, “We thought we were being so secretive too.” She laughed.

“Not really but that’s ok, I can understand your not wanting everyone to know just yet that you are seeing each other.” Jeff told her thinking of how his ex wife might react to the news.

“I am sorry for not telling you sooner dad, it’s just that well its all confusing because of mom and Phillip being married and Max technically being my step brother.” She told him.

“I can see how that would be difficult to work through. Listen Lizzie,” he told her, “I am not going to lie to you…. I think it is going to be complicated and you and Max will need to practice self restraint more then the average teen age couple because you are living under the same roof, but I trust you. You and Max are young and you have all the time in the world to explore the feelings you have for one another. Don’t rush into things that you might not be ready for…take it slow, its important to build friendships first, the love that blossoms from that can be really special.” He told her then added, “You have always used mature wisdom when it comes to handling life’s situations and I am sure you will continue to do so.” He told her.

Liz smiled, “Thanks daddy, I won’t let you down.” She told him.

“There’s more bothering you isn’t there?” her dad asked.

“No, I’m ok…just sleepy.” She told him.

“Ok get some sleep, but remember I am always here if you want to talk.” He told her as he tucked her into bed and kissed her good night.

Liz smiled, “daddy, can we not tell mom about Max and I for right now?” she asked him.

Jeff smiled, “Ok, for now we will keep it between us.” He told her.
