CHAPTER 42

AN: Alright, I told Lissalou that I would post this in the morning, but then, I have a lot to do tomorrow and probably won't be able to, so I will post it now. Thanx again for all the wonderful feedback and keep it coming. This story is wrapping up, so I hope you've enjoyed the ride. On with the show!

“You recognize that name?” Max asked Liz gently as he placed a hand on the small of her back, needing to touch her.

Liz looked into his eyes, as if just now noticing him there and nodded slowly. “The mission...when I got shot...” she licked her lips, “the people in the downed chopper...Harding.”

Tess looked up at her, an expression full of anguish. “Oh my God! My parents!” Diane gasped out loud.

Kyle opened his big mouth again as he laughed bitterly. Everyone turned to look at him while he talked to Liz. “You mean to tell me...that you nearly died...rescuing this bitch’s parents? And she’s been here the whole time, making our lives a living hell?! Oh, that’s rich! That’s fucking beautiful!”

“Kyle!” Diane scolded him for the language.

Tess stood up and took a hold of Liz’s shirt, tugging on her as she cried her blue eyes out. “Are they okay?! Please tell me they’re okay!”

Liz looked down at the girl, unable to give her an answer. She didn’t want to give the wench the satisfaction of a straight answer. She felt a little sympathetic that the girl could have lost her parents, and was yet to be informed of their condition. But that video flashed in front of her eyes, and Liz felt no more sympathy. Liz felt the bitch deserved to wonder for a while, stewing in pain, the way Liz had been stewing in pain. Liz just pulled herself free and walked slowly into Max’s house, leaving Tess on her knees on the lawn, having to wonder.

Tess wasn’t that surprised that Liz had left the way she did. Tess knew she had screwed up royally, and now she would have to deal with the consequences. It was so easy to see how much Max and Liz loved each other. She could see it whenever the brunette would look at him, and vice-versa. It made Tess feel even worse, if that was possible, for the havoc she had wreaked on their lives. Two people in love should never have to go through so much to be together. And from their worn expressions, they had been through enough.

Max looked at Tess, feeling a slight pull at his heart, but the pull was dragging him toward the house, and that’s exactly where he went, picking up Liz’s duffle bag as he went. Diane didn’t know what to do. She wanted to make some phone calls to reassure the girl about her parents. They couldn’t have died out there. Someone would have been notified. Diane hated herself for the motherly instinct as she walked slowly towards Tess.

Diane leaned down and held out her hand. Tess stared at that hand before placing her palm there, allowing Diane to pull her up. When Tess caught Diane’s eyes, the woman said, “Just so we’re clear. Just because I’m helping you doesn’t mean that I’m not still angry with you.” Tess nodded, showing that she understood. Diane shot another glare at Phillip as she walked inside the house, making a reluctant Kyle follow them. They left Phillip out in the cold, just where he belonged, and made sure to lock the door after closing it tightly.

Diane led the distraught Tess into the kitchen, sitting her down at the table. Diane handed the girl a bottle of water before she went to pick up the phone.

******************

Max followed Liz into his bedroom. He watched from the doorway as she slowly took off her sling, wincing as she did. Max moved to her side quickly, hating her in pain. That’s when he saw the blood. “Liz, you’re bleeding.” Liz looked down and noticed that blood was, in fact, seeping through the white bandage over her wound. Liz looked up at him “Could you get my stuff from my bag?”

Max stood still for a second, just looking into her eyes, trying to resist the urge to drag her to him and kiss her senseless. He nodded and went to her bag, coming back to her with the bandages and a small bottle of Percocet. When she went to take the stuff from him, he stopped her. “Let me help you.”

He sat her on the edge of his bed, dropping to his knees, and carefully undressed the wound. Liz chuckled and Max asked her what was funny. “I’m the only one, huh?”

Max smiled himself and looked into her eyes, his expression totally serious. “I wouldn’t go to my knees for anyone else.” He lovingly applied the medication, wincing with her whenever she would pull in a breath at the pain. Just touching her was driving him crazy. He knew she was hurting here, and yet, his body immediately became aroused at just having her close to him again.

Liz wasn’t doing much better. She wanted to tear his shirt off and feel his skin beneath her palms again. His touch was sending an electrical current down her arms and straight to her belly. Both, however, seemed oblivious to the effect they were having on each other. He redressed the wound just as carefully. He opened the bottle of Percocet for her and handed her one, just as directed, before reaching over to get the bottle of water from his dresser.

Liz took the pill, grateful for his help. “Does it hurt a lot?” Max asked her. He looked so innocent and Liz had to offer him a small smile.

“It comes and goes.” He smiled slightly at that, glad that it didn’t hurt her all the time. “That little display out there just fired it up.” Max wanted to kick his own ass for putting her through that kind of pain, both physical and mental. When Liz caught it, she put her hand on his bicep. “It’s not your fault, Max. If it was, I wouldn’t be here.”

Max couldn’t wait any longer. He moved forward and wrapped his arms tightly around her, dragging her up until they were both standing, holding onto each other. Liz returned his embrace with one arm. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in her scent. Liz placed a small kiss on the side of his throat, sending small palpitations between the two of them. When Liz pulled back to look into his eyes, she had forgotten everything in that moment. She had been away from him and now she just wanted to be with him, and damn everything else.

Max didn’t cross the line though. He wouldn’t allow himself to. This was all on her shoulders now. He would easily give her whatever she wanted, but she’d have to be the one to make the first move. He held her at an arm’s length, his breathing labored, as he waited on her.

Liz looked down at his lips, before flicking back to his eyes, back to his lips. She wanted to kiss him so bad and she knew he was waiting for her. She leaned in just a little, but that’s when her dream came back to her.

Max noticed her stopping just before she had reached his lips and the pain he saw in her eyes was unmistakable. “I’m sorry, Max, I can’t.” Max felt like crying. “Not yet. I’m sorry.”

His jaw clenched and he had to close his eyes for a minute. He looked back at her, his face softening. He lifted her up with an arm under her knees, and gently laid her on his bed. He gently and slowly took off her shoes, before covering her up with a blanket. “Get some rest.” He kissed her on the forehead, unable to keep his lips off her, and turned off the light on his way out of the bedroom.

Once outside the closed door, he slid down to the floor, putting his knees up, and trying not to cry at the situation they were all in. He finally got up, wiping at his face, before heading downstairs to see what was happening now.

When Max got into the kitchen, he saw Tess sitting at the kitchen table and his blood began to boil. “What the fuck?!

“Max!” Diane stopped him from going any further. Diane had the phone to her ear and was shushing Max with a finger to her lips. Max looked back at Tess and noticed that she was sobbing uncontrollably and she was obviously a mess. Max looked over at Kyle, who stood off to the side, obviously torn between hating her and comforting her.

Diane hung up the phone after saying a few thank you’s and turned to Tess, putting her hand on the girl’s shoulder. Tess looked up at her. “Your parents are alive.” Tess heaved a huge sigh of relief. “They’re in Germany, recovering. Your mother had some head trauma and your father had a broken sternum.” Tess’s expression changed to one of anguish. “But they’re going to be okay.”

“Oh, thank God!” Tess stood and began to walk out of the kitchen when Max grabbed her upper arm.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“I’m going to tell Liz thank you for saving my parents’ lives.”

“No you’re not.” Tess wanted to move past him, but the look in his eyes dared her to even try it. “She’s resting.” Max let go of Tess and she nodded stiffly. She turned back to Kyle and Diane.

“None of it’s true.”

“What?” Kyle asked, his eyebrows raised in question.

“None of it! The relationship with Phillip...” She turned back to Max. “The pregnancy.”

“More lies. What else is new, Tess?” Max said, barely concealing his anger. Max was plenty angry, but he couldn’t help but be extremely relieved that she wasn’t pregnant. It made things so much easier. Similarly, Kyle breathed a silent sigh of relief that she wasn’t actually bumping uglies with Max’s old man.

Tess wanted to explain. “It’s just that...” Everyone turned to her, wanting to hear what she had to say. “When I got kicked out of here, and then Kyle turned his back on me...” She looked over at Kyle, who only seemed to be slightly proud of his decision to throw her out on her ass. “I didn’t have anywhere else to go. So, I went home, curled up underneath a blanket, and fell asleep. That’s how Phillip found me. He fed me and took me with him, but he said I would have to help him. I didn’t want to. I tried to warn you guys.” When she turned to Diane, everyone else followed suit, not knowing about the warning.

“She did call,” Diane told them. “But you still raped my son.”

“It wasn’t supposed to happen that way!” Tess cried out. “I had just come home from a date with Kyle and...Phillip told me that Max...I believed him.” She didn’t know what else she could say. “When I went upstairs, Max told me that he loved me.”

“I did not! I was asleep for fuck’s sake! Couldn’t you see that?!” Max was about ready to lose it again.

“It was dark,” Tess explained. “I didn’t know you were dreaming. I thought you were actually talking to me. Telling me that you were sorry for your past behavior and that you loved me. I didn’t realize you hadn’t known about it until the next morning. I swear, Max.”

“Then why did you lie about it? Why didn’t you tell me the truth when I asked that morning?!” Max couldn’t believe this. He wanted an explanation quickly.

“Because at that point, I knew it would devastate you! I wanted to hold onto our friendship for as long as I could! I’m sorry, Max!”

Max felt bad for her at that point. He knew how she had felt about him then, and he also knew that most of the blame belonged with Phillip for using her feelings to manipulate her. He also knew what he had told Liz in his dream, and he felt terrible that Tess had to be there, thinking that he had been telling her those things. He could only imagine what it must have felt like for her, thinking that Max was being with her, the same way he was with Liz.

Max knew that when he was with Liz, love exploded from every pore in his body, and it would probably be very hard to not see that. His gut twisted then, knowing that the special love he reserved for Liz, had been showered upon someone else. He almost felt like vomiting at the level of betrayal.

“Then why did you go along with Phillip’s plan, if you’d felt so bad about what you’d done?” Kyle asked, interested.

“I told you, I was hungry. No one else would even speak to me. I had no money, and the house was freezing. I didn’t know what else to do.” Tess was crying hysterically now, so Diane insisted that she go to the guest room to relax for a little while. She went willingly, wanting nothing more than to sleep for a bit. She was so tired.

Kyle had his head down, hating that he could still feel something for her. He felt terrible that she had been in such a situation that she felt like Phillip was her only way out. He now felt a little guilty too. Okay, maybe he felt a lot guilty. If he had just allowed her to come into his house that day, maybe none of this would have happened. Maybe she would have come clean before and something could have been done about Phillip sooner.

Diane, too, felt her heart squeezing slightly. She was only a girl. She was naive and very young. All that she had said actually made sense, but still, Diane was Max’s mother. And nobody hurts her baby boy. It was a difficult place for the woman to be in.

Once Tess was gone, Max shook his head. “This is unbelievable! I can’t believe this shit is happening to me!”

Diane went to her son. “Max, what exactly does that tape show? I mean, if we went to a jury with it...what would they see?”

“They’d see a guy very much in love with a girl.” Everyone looked up startled at Liz’s sudden entrance.

Max ran over to her. “Baby, you should be resting.” He noticed that she was a little drowsy from the drugs. Liz allowed him to help her sit in a chair.

“What do you mean, Liz?” Diane asked her.

“If you want to see it, it’s in my bag. All that DVD does is show Max and that girl making love.”

“Please don’t say that,” Max cringed.

“It’s true.” Liz looked into his eyes compassionately. She knew now that it wasn’t his fault, having heard everything Tess said before she went upstairs. She placed a hand on his cheek and he closed his eyes, savoring her touch.

“Can I see it, Liz?” Diane asked gently and Liz nodded. Diane went upstairs to get it from her bag.

Kyle clapped his hands together before rubbing them excitedly. “Damn, Liz! That shit was awesome! When you flipped Phil on his back and dragged Tess outta the house like that! Yes!! I would have paid admission to see that!” Kyle laughed heartily.

Max glared at him to keep quiet, but Liz managed a small smile. “I was pretty pissed,” she said softly. “At least now I don’t have to take her to the hospital.” She looked at Max and he smiled widely.

“Yup. No baby to worry about now.” He laid his head in her lap as he kneeled before her and Liz stroked his hair.

“Well, I guess, this is the moment where I leave.” Kyle quickly made his exit, mumbling about going to help Diane.

“Liz?” Max asked from inside her lap.

“Hmm?”

“Are we gonna be okay?”

She looked down at him as he looked up and smiled. “We’d better be.” They smiled at their little inside joke, remembering when Max had asked her that before.

Just then, Diane came into the living room with several DVDs and asked Liz which one it was. She immediately picked it out, and then excused herself, saying that she couldn’t watch it. Max followed her, because he knew that it would only make him sick. Diane and Kyle stayed to watch it.

***************

Meanwhile, Outside...

Phillip was fuming! They had just welcomed that little bitch back into their home. Even after everything she had done to them! Alright, maybe most of it was his fault, but still. This truly sucked for him.

He headed over for the rental car, angry at the turn of events. He had hoped that Tess would have been with him, just as miserable as he was. Well, she is pretty miserable, isn’t she? Her parents could very well be dead right now, couldn’t they? He thought to himself as he climbed inside the car.

He reached over, opening the glove box and pulling out that bottle of Jack Daniel’s he had stowed there. He cracked it open, listening to the new bottle crackle as the plastic unzipped from around the neck, and took a generous swig, allowing the taste of the liquor to numb his tongue and throat. He felt the warmth spread throughout his body and took another large gulp.

He noticed the light come on in Max’s room, and watched two shadows facing each other. He could only assume it was Max and his little whore, talking out they’re problems. He could imagine them crying their pretty little eyes out to each other and as he continued to drink, he made up his own dialogue.

Oh, Liz,” he began in a deep, yet whiney voice. “I’m so sorry about everything that’s happened. I swear, I really thought she was you.”

Oh, Max,” he switched voices to a sugary sweet, yet equally whiney voice. “I always knew you loved me. She’s just a dumb slut who tried to steal my man. But I showed her, huh?

He switched voices again. “You sure did, baby!” He watched their shadows suddenly fall out of view. Then he made little kissy sounds as he imagined them making out before falling onto the bed. He took another long sip from the bottle.

Back to Liz’s voice. “Take me, Max! Right here and now! Prove to me you love me more!

And back to Max’s voice again. “Oh, Liz! I love you so much! Ahhh!” He snorted loudly, wiping the liquor off his mouth with the back of his hand after another sloppy sip. “Disgusting,” he said to himself as he started the car, headed for the mountains. It was always so easy to clear his head up there.

He continued to drink as he swerved around the narrow roads, further and further up the side of the mountain. He looked over the edge briefly, before fixing his gaze back to the front. He tipped back the bottle, but didn’t get much out of it. He looked down and realized that it was empty. “Dammit!” He cursed, throwing the bottle out of his open window.

A loud HONK turned his attention back to the road, a large SUV swerving to avoid the bottle he had thrown out. Phillip cut the wheel to the right, out of the truck’s way. The last thing he saw was the green of the trees and the snow on the mountains. He screamed, more irritated than scared, “Where the hell is the guard rail?!

AN: Lol! I promised Lissalou I was gonna post this, like HOURS ago. But I honestly just now got to it so, sorry bout that.

Alright, everyone seems a little grossed out that Diane wants to watch the video. But, I have to agree with NORA & SHATTEREDDREAMER. She just wants to see if there’s anything there that could help Max’s case. I’m sure she’s just as weirded out about it as the rest of you all are. In fact, since she’s my character, I KNOW she’s just as weirded out. You’ll see in the first part of this next chapter. So, please, don’t assume there were perverted intentions there, lol. Because, trust me, I’ve pretty much explored the deepest depths of my perversions throughout this story already. He He!

I also want to thank ERINA & ELLIE for agreeing with Diane’s motherly instinct toward Tess. It’s not an easy thing to do, considering how she feels, but as a mother, it would be just plain cruel to leave Tess out there.

And I gotta say, CHERIE, your feedbacks never fail to crack me up. LMAO! You’re too funny! And thanx again to everyone else for your excellent feedback. Keep it coming!

One last note: After this part, there are only two parts left. So, hopefully, because a story is a promise, I will have fulfilled my promise to the very end.

CHAPTER 43

Diane put the DVD into the player and watched as the screen prompted her to hit PLAY. As her hand hovered over the button, she stopped. “I can’t do this.”

“What, why not?!” Kyle asked, bummed.

“This is my son! I can’t watch him having sex!” She said that last word in a forbidden whisper as if it was completely taboo.

Kyle nodded slowly at her, understanding where she was coming from. Then, he nearly leaped off the couch for the remote and said, “Well, I sure as hell don’t mind!” He hit the PLAY button and relaxed back into the cushions while Diane clapped a hand over her eyes. “I wish I had some popcorn,” he grumbled.

******************

“Are you okay?” Max asked Liz as they came into his room, flipping on the light.

“Yeah,” Liz said softly as she turned to him. He looked at her, openly adoring her, and Liz bit her lip nervously under his scrutiny.

“I’ve missed you so much,” Max cleared his throat. “I realize a lot has happened and you probably hate me...”

Liz put her finger on his lips, shushing him. “I already told you, Max. If I hated you, I wouldn’t be here. I know none of this was your fault. You were drunk.”

“But you can’t hardly touch me,” Max whispered painfully. Liz couldn’t help herself then. She threw her arms around his neck, squeezing the life out of him, despite her shoulder protesting in ache. Max let out a long breath as he hugged her back, the two of them falling on the bed together. Max buried his face in her slender neck, brushing his lips over the skin without kissing her.

Liz pulled back to look him in the face and to give her shoulder a break. “Max, I love you. I always will. But you have to understand what I saw...and the way I saw it.” Max just listened, knowing that was all she wanted from him right now. “I thought you had been seeing her behind my back for a long time. The way you were with her...”

“Is the way I am with you,” he stated, hating that it was true. He watched as she nodded and then just listened to her again.

“I didn’t know what to think. I’m sorry I doubted you.”

“What do you have to be sorry about?!” Max exclaimed. “Had it been me, I would have thought the same things. God, Liz...I can’t tell you how dirty I feel...how completely...violating this is. I love you so much. And to know that my love for you came out during a dream and was given freely to another person...” Max cringed visibly, swallowing hard. “I’m disgusted.”

“Oh, Max,” Liz whispered, playing with his hair. “We’ll get past this. I promise you we will. I just need some time, okay?” Max nodded sadly. “My heart needs to get back together before I can give it back to you.”

“I’m here, Liz. I’ll always be here. And I’m going to help you mend that heart. Because I’m not going to lie to you. The truth is...I really want it back.” He gripped her to him tightly again, kissing her on the lips quickly without thinking. But he was grateful when she just snuggled closer to him instead of getting weird about it.

**************

“This sucks! I don’t see any...”

“What was that?!” Diane cut him off, unshielding her eyes for the first time since Kyle had started watching the video.

“What?” Kyle asked her back.

“Rewind,” Diane told him and he obeyed. “Turn it up.” Once again, Kyle obeyed. Diane turned her head again, not able to watch it, but listened carefully. “There! Did you hear it?!”

“I sure as hell did,” Kyle said softly, nodding his head slowly in realization. The two exchanged a glance. Diane went upstairs and Kyle hit PAUSE.

When Diane came back to the living room with a half-asleep Tess, she said, “I want you to watch this and tell me what you see, okay?”

Kyle hit the button and Tess looked at the screen, feeling very strange watching this with Kyle, of all people. Tess heard it as soon as it was said. Max was pumping inside of her, and just as Tess’s nails raked down his back, the very distinct sigh escaped his lips. “Liz...

“How do you feel about that, skank?” Kyle chuckled as he pressed STOP. Tess had her hands over her mouth, unable to determine whether the admission on video or Kyle’s hateful words had hurt more. Even as she thought it, she knew it was the latter.

“You mean to tell me that you didn’t hear that? Can you honestly tell me that you didn’t know he didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing?” Diane asked Tess pointedly.

“And trust me, it would be stupid to say yes now,” Kyle smirked.

“I didn’t hear that,” Tess whispered. She looked between Kyle and Diane, her throat unable to conjure the words for how terrible of a mistake she had made. She looked at Diane in particular. “Please...I don’t know what to say...please...” Tess could clearly see the error of her ways and she fell to her knees in a heap. She broke down right in front of Kyle and Diane. She truly hadn’t heard Max say Liz’s name. She looked up at Diane and asked, “What should I do? Please, tell me what to do and I’ll do it. Anything to fix this.”

“Go back to your room. I need to talk to my son. Then, I’ll decide what to do with you.” Tess left with her tail between her legs, and Diane took in a ragged breath, rubbing her face. It was getting late and she was very tired. Kyle hopped off the couch and told Diane that he would get Max for her.

*********

“Knock, knock,” Kyle warned as he opened Max’s bedroom door. He saw the two lovers laying on Max’s bed, tangled up in each other, asleep. How could they be asleep? They’ve only be in here, like, ten minutes, Kyle thought. Kyle tip-toed over and gently shoved Max’s shoulder. Max lifted up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. The movement stirred Liz awake also.

“Max, your mom wants to see ya,” Kyle explained.

“About what?” Max asked huskily.

“She wants to know what you wanna do about Tess.”

Max started to excuse himself from Liz’s body, but then he saw her attempting to get up as well. “No, baby, stay here and sleep,” Max suggested.

“No,” Liz protested. “I’m a part of this, too.” Max hesitated briefly before nodding, knowing that she had every right to be there as well. He gave her his hand which she took and allowed her to lean on him as the three kids trudged down the stairs.

Diane sat at the kitchen table and motioned for all of them to join her. Once everyone was situated, Diane opened her mouth to speak, but Liz’s cell phone interrupted them.

Liz gave a shy glance as she answered. “Hello?”

“Parker, oh my god, what happened?”

“Hey, DeLuca. Look, I can’t talk right now, but if you want, I’ll let Kyle give you the details.”

“Kyle?” Maria asked, confused. Then it dawned on her. “Oh, that little prick from Icon?! I’ve been meaning to get my hands around his neck and...” As Maria babbled on, Liz handed the phone to Kyle, which he took eagerly.

“Hey, you,” he grinned into the phone, making Liz and Max chuckle. Maria’s voice could be heard screaming through the phone and Kyle politely excused himself. “Now, there’s no need to get hostile, sweetheart. What about everything we’ve shared?”

Liz rolled her eyes and Max laughed openly as he heard Kyle excitedly relaying the events of Liz’s wrath on Tess and Phillip.

“Anyway...” Diane interjected. “What should we do about, uh...” She pointed her thumb up, indicating Tess, who was upstairs. Max shook his head, not knowing at all what to do and Liz remained quiet. “Do you want to press charges, Max?”

“I don’t know,” he said sadly. “It’s like I said before, there’s no real proof that it was rape.”

“We have it on video, Max. And I will admit, the picture is a little shaky, but there’s no doubt what’s happening. Besides you actually say Liz’s name in it.” Diane shuddered a little at the thought of her baby boy having sex.

Liz smiled. She hadn’t heard Max say her name when she had watched it. Then, she shook her head. It didn’t matter anyway. “There’s no doubt that he’s having sex,” Liz chimed in. “And it wouldn’t be the first time a guy called out the wrong name in the middle. But Max is right. That video doesn’t prove he’s drunk and passed out. He looks like a rather complacent partner.” Max visibly cringed again and Liz took his hand under the table, squeezing it gently to lend her support. Max squeezed her fingers back, grateful for her presence.

“Then what should we do?!” Diane asked. She was running out of options.

“Isn’t there someplace else you could send her?” Max asked quickly. “Anything to get her out of this house.”

Diane sighed loudly. “We’ll have to wait until her parents wake up. Then we can contact them and see if they have any suggestions. If we can’t go through the police then I guess the next best thing would be her parents.” Max and Liz nodded quickly, taking that idea as the best option they had at this point. “Alright, Liz, why don’t you go back upstairs and get some sleep. You’re obviously exhausted. Max will help you.”

Max didn’t need to be told twice. He took Liz’s hand and led her back to his room. That’s when Tess decided to face Liz finally. “What the hell do you want?” Max growled, stepping in front of Liz as if to protect her.

Tess didn’t dare look in Max’s fiery eyes. She just kept her head down as she said, “I just want to talk to Liz for a minute.”

“Fat chance,” Max snarled. He felt Liz’s hand on his arm.

Liz’s expression was far from sympathetic, though. “It’s alright, Max, let her say what she has to say,” Liz said, accusingly.

Tess raised her eyes, still trying not to look directly at Liz. “I just wanted to thank you for saving my parent’s lives. If it weren’t for you...” Tess nearly choked on her words, but managed to go on, all the while knowing that both Max and Liz were sneering at her. “And I wanted to say that I’m sorry...” She looked between them, staring into each of their eyes for a moment a piece. “I’m sorry, Max,” she whispered. “I...” She had already told him everything. She didn’t get any vibes from either him or Liz that they wanted more excuses. So, she just backed out of the room, in cowardice.

Once she had left, Max pulled Liz against his hard body, feeling her tremble with emotion. Max couldn’t blame her. He had slight waves coursing through him as well at just the sight of Tess anymore. When Liz stopped shaking, Max placed his palms on either side of her face and looked into her eyes. “Breathe,” he smiled slightly and so did she. He led her gently over to the bed.

Kyle came in just after Max had laid Liz down again, handing her back her cell phone. “Maria’s fine. I let her know what’s up,” Kyle stated proudly as Liz placed the cell phone on the dresser.

“I’ll bet you did,” Liz volleyed back.

“How come you never told me she was that mad about that night? God, she nearly screamed my ear off.” Liz giggled as she thought about what Maria had probably said to Kyle about his deception. “You weren’t that mean to Max, were ya?” Kyle scratched his head.

“Worse,” Max nodded and ushered Kyle out.

Just after Max hit the light he heard Liz whisper, “Wait.” He turned to her and knew what she was asking. He wouldn’t allow himself to deny her. Hell, he wouldn’t allow himself to deny his own feelings either. He curled his body behind hers on the bed, wrapping her up in his comforting embrace. He laid his head in the crook of her neck and allowed her breathing to lull him to sleep.

The door flew open at that moment though, and both Max and Liz looked up to see who it was. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, Max?”

“Mom...I...” He felt like he had been caught doing the deed with the way his mother was scowling at him.

“I asked him to stay,” Liz defended him. “It’s my fault.”

“Look, Liz, I’m sure that when you guys were in Roswell, your parents were very understanding of a boy in your bed. But he’s still my teenage son.” With that, she turned back to him. “Max...couch.” The two looked at each other sheepishly and Diane left the room.

“Remember what we did in Roswell?” Max whispered, referring to his sneaking into her room in the middle of the night, and Liz nodded. “I’ll be back soon.” He kissed her forehead.

Just as he was leaving the room, he watched his mother come back, smiling sweetly. “No, you won’t.” She grabbed his collar and playfully pushed him towards the stairs. But not before Liz caught Max’s slight nod and smirk in her direction, his expression saying, “Yes, I will.”

Liz smiled and laid back on the pillow, waiting for Max to fulfill his promise. She felt a little uneasy that Tess was in the next room, but what could she do? They would all just have to wait and see what would happen when Tess’s parents woke up. Then, hopefully, she would get out of their lives and allow them all to move on.

*****************

On the side of the mountain, a gruff looking man with a full beard and a large coat came barreling out of his SUV, looking over the side where he had seen the sleek car go over. He looked down and saw the car tipped on its driver’s side, stuck between two small trees. He bellowed down into the winter, “Hello?! Can you hear me?!” The sound echoed frighteningly, but the man heard nothing. He ran back to his truck, grabbing his cell phone and dialing 911.

**************

Just as Diane was dragging herself into bed, the loud shrill of the phone caught her attention. She picked it up and cradled it against her head, her voice husky with sleep. "Hello?"

CHAPTER 44

“Sergeant Major Evans?”

“Yes.”

“Mrs. Harding is awake and is requesting to speak with you.”

Diane blinked a few times to wake herself up. “Yes, I would love to speak to her, thank you.”

The line went silent for a moment before Michelle Harding’s voice came over. “Sergeant Major Evans...how is everything?” Michelle sounded weak and Diane hated to have to dump this crap all over her right now, but it had to be done.

“Actually, Michelle, there’s been a slight problem with Tess.”

“Oh my goodness, what’s happened?” Tess’s mother gasped.

“Actually, there have been some...complications. Um...” Diane was trying to do this delicately, but she truly didn’t know what she could say to soften the blow. “Tess had some improper conduct with my son.”

The line was silent. Michelle was thinking about what this could mean. “What do you mean?”

Diane knew now that there was no other way to say this but to just say it, so she let out a long breath. “She raped my son.”

“Excuse me?” Michelle didn’t know is she should believe this accusation or not. “Are you sure?”

“Listen, Michelle, I know this is hard for you to hear. It was hard for me to have to find out as well. But, one night, while my son was under the strong influence of alcohol...Tess took advantage of him.” There was some more silence and Diane could only imagine what the woman must be going through.

“Oh my goodness. Is Max alright?” Michelle was truly concerned for her boy.

“He’s fine...physically. Emotionally though...he’s a wreck.”

“I can imagine. I don’t know what I would do if the tables were turned. I am truly embarrassed about this, Diane.” After a long pause, Michelle asked shakily, “Are you going to press charges?”

“I was going to.” Diane could almost hear Michelle’s heart pounding over the phone. “But, unfortunately, according to Max,” she smiled at how well he would do with law school, “Rape is hard enough to prove, date rape being even harder still, and there’s no physical proof anymore.”

“Alright,” Michelle said.

“Alright?” Diane asked in disbelief.

“As soon as Roger wakes up, we will talk about what we can do from here, okay? I’m sorry, Diane, I really wish there was a better way to handle this.” Diane could hear the regret in Michelle’s tone, wishing she was not in a hospital bed and knew of a quicker way to deal with the situation, and Diane wanted to be as helpful as possible.

“It’s okay, Michelle, take as much time as you need. She can stay here until you decide.”

“I’m so sorry about this Diane. I have no idea what could have gotten into her. Is she there?” Diane could hear Michelle becoming angry and Diane honestly couldn’t blame her.

“Actually, she’s sleeping right now, but I could wake...”

“Yes! Please, wake her up, I’d like to have a few words with her if you don’t mind.”

“Hang on, I’ll go get her.”

Before Diane could move though, Michelle’s voice stopped her. “I am so sorry, Diane. I don’t even know what to say. Is there anything I can do to fix this?”

“As long as this gets resolved, we shouldn’t have a problem.” Diane then went to Tess’s room and woke her up, explaining that her mother was on the phone.

Tess got the cordless phone from the kitchen wall. “Mom? Are you alright?”

“I can’t believe this, Tessa!” Tess winced at the childhood name her mother would use when scolding her. “This woman took you into her home and this is how you repay her?! We’re at war, for goodness sake, Tessa! It’s not like we took a trip to the Bahamas and dumped your little ass at some stranger’s place.”

“Mom, you don’t even...”

“I don’t want to hear your excuses! I will call you back when your father wakes up and we will figure out how to deal with this situation. I am embarrassed and disappointed, Tessa. And you should be, too.” Her mother hung up, then, and Tess could feel the fire of her words ringing in her ears. The conversation only served to make Tess more ashamed of her actions, if that was even possible. Tess didn’t know how she could have felt any worse, and yet, there it was. She hung the phone up and went back to her room to cry her eyes out.

****************

Max snuck into Liz’s room an hour after he had left it. He wished he could have been there sooner, but he just noticed his mother asleep, and he would be damned if he didn’t keep his promise to Liz. When he crept into the bedroom, softly closing the door, he got to the bed and noticed that Liz was already asleep.

He crawled in the bed behind her, spooning against her. He watched as she shifted to get closer to him. “Thank you,” she whispered softly.

“Told ya I’d be back,” he winked and wrapped her up in his embrace, her head resting in the crook of his arm. He tried to tell himself that he would have to wake up early, before his mother caught him with her. But a part of him knew that even if he did get caught, it would be well worth it.

****************

RING! RING!

Diane glanced at the clock as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. 2:15 AM. She reached over to grab it and answered with a gruff, “Somebody better be dead.”

“Mrs. Evans?” The professionalism of the person on the other line made her sit up straight in bed.

“Yes?” A sick feeling entered her stomach.

“There’s been an accident.”

****************

Diane ran to Max’s room first, since it was closest. She threw open the door and was beyond shocked to see not only Liz, but Max’s head pop out from under the sheets as well. She narrowed her eyes, shook her head, and wagged her finger at their shameful expressions. “Ooohhh...you two...if I had time for this right now...”

“What is...” Kyle came up behind her and saw what she was looking at. “Hey!” His outburst woke Tess up and she, too, came running from the other room. “My bed didn’t have a pretty girl in it! Max always gets the bed with the pretty girl!”

Kyle!” The whole room shouted at him in total sync and embarrassment.

Diane really didn’t have time to reprimand them at the moment, but they would definitely get it later. “We have to go, kids!”

“What’s up, Mom?” Max asked, nervously.

“It’s Phillip.”

They all dressed quickly before leaving the house in a hurry for the hospital.

“This all seems very familiar,” Liz said as they rushed to the emergency waiting room. Diane Evans quickly found a nurse and asked for information concerning the man who was technically still her husband.

“He’s in surgery right now, Mrs. Evans. You’ll have to wait for the doctor to finish.”

“Is he going to be okay?” Diane couldn’t help asking.

“We don’t know anything yet, Sergeant Major.” The nurse was very vague and her expression hadn’t been very hopeful. So Diane sat down on one of the hard, cold chairs.

She turned to the kids. “Why don’t you guys go on home for now? The Hardings should be calling soon and I’ll call and let you all know if anything changes, alright?”

Kyle and Tess seemed eager to get out of the confines of the hospital, but Max and Liz seemed reluctant to leave Diane there. “Mom...are you sure? Because I can stay with you.”

“I’m sure, Max. Please...just go home, and I’ll take care of this.” Just after they had turned, Diane said, “Oh, and Max...Liz?” The couple turned back to face her. “We will be having a conversation later.” Max raised his eyebrows and bit his inner-cheek, not really looking forward to that.

Max took a hold of Liz’s hand, which she had no problems with, and followed Kyle and Tess out of the building to the jeep.

**************

Max threw his keys down on the kitchen table and turned to see Liz was the only one who had followed him there. When Liz caught the look on his face, she pulled him to her and threw her good arm around his neck. He placed an open mouth kiss on the side of her throat, reveling in her presence.

Her fingers threaded through his hair and he unconsciously brought his lips to hers, kissing her recklessly. Liz allowed him to let his emotions out through the kiss. She kissed him back, letting him control it. In that moment, there were no more restrictions, and Liz forgot about everything that had happened between them.

Max’s hands slid up underneath her top, grazing her soft skin cautiously. A part of him wasn’t sure if she was ready for this, even though her body was responding so eagerly to him. His hands rounded down toward her bottom, about to cup her buttocks when a clearing throat interrupted their little make-out session.

“Sorry to interrupt you absolutely gorgeous lovebirds,” Kyle rolled his eyes, “But I’m hungry. So could you get your tongues out of each other’s mouths while I’m eating, please?” He went to the fridge as Max and Liz smiled secretly at each other, neither one regretting their loss of control.

**************

The phone rang and Kyle snatched it up instantly, being the only one in the room. “Hello?”

“Who is this?”

“It’s Kyle, who’s this?” Kyle scrunched his forehead in confusion.

“It’s Roger Harding.”

“Oh, Roger...Judging from your unpleasant tone of voice, you already know about your daughter raping the boyfriend of the soldier who saved your life. And if you don’t, I have to admit, it is one hell of a story,” he chuckled mercilessly. He looked up and his eyes suddenly caught Tess’s pained expression as he looked across the room, where she had just come in. “Hang on.” He put the phone down, not even wanting the small contact of simply handing the phone to her, and left the room.

Tess watched him go, his actions hurting her quite a bit. She picked up the phone. “Daddy, are you okay?”

“Your mother and I are fine. Or at least we were until we found out what you had been doing while we were away.”

“Daddy, it’s not...”

“I don’t want to hear it, Tess! Rape?! And not only that, but a direct hit at the brave soldier who risked her life to save your mother and I in the desert?! I know we didn’t raise you to be like this.”

Tess’s control snapped. “What do you mean you raised me?! You and Mom are never around. My relatives have raised me!”

“Well, then I guess they’re the ones who did a terrible job, then!” Roger yelled at her. “There will be a bus leaving at 8 AM and I want you on it.”

“Where am I going?” Tess asked in disdain.

“Military School.”

******************

“Nothing’s changed yet, Max. In fact, they haven’t even finished the surgery yet.”

“Do you think he’s...” Max wasn’t sure why he even cared, but the man had been a part of his life so long...it was hard for Max to let go completely.

Diane felt him through the phone, going through the same emotions. She answered him sadly, “I’m not sure, Max. Just take care of things there right now. Did the Hardings call?”

“Yeah. Kyle is taking Tess to the bus station as we speak.”

“What happened?”

“She’s going to military school.”

*******************

The drive to the bus station was nothing but silence. Tess was thinking about the prospect of being shipped off to military school and she wasn’t exactly happy about it. Military School?! Didn’t that only happen in the movies?! She thought, bitterly. This sucks! Not that she had anyone to blame for it but herself, really. She couldn’t believe the veracity of the hole she had managed to dig herself into. She felt like she had painted herself into a corner and there was no way out, but to wait for the damn paint to dry. She knew she was being unreasonably angry at the situation that she knew she had gotten herself into for being an absolute moron, but she felt like she had no more emotions left.

Kyle handed Tess her bag after she had gotten out of the jeep. He had Max’s cell phone with him in case anything happened at the hospital. Tess took her bag from him sullenly.

“I’m really sorry about all this, Kyle.” Tess couldn’t help it. She just had to apologize to him.

Kyle’s emotions were well hidden. “Hey, whatever. No hard feelings.” Tess hung her head, feeling terrible for his nonchalant reaction. She turned to walk away when he grabbed her arm and turned her back to him. This time, his emotions were on his sleeve. “I really liked you, Tess. I really thought there was something special there.” He shook his head in disappointment.

Tess didn’t know what to say other than, “I’m really sorry, Kyle. I really liked you, too. What I did was completely selfish and wrong. I wasn’t thinking about anyone but myself. And I can’t tell you how sorry I am now that it’s all over.”

Kyle lowered his eyes, not wanting to feel anything but contempt for her, but his human side was coming out. He pulled her to him and hugged her loosely. “Maybe...” He pulled back to look in her face. “I don’t know.”

“Neither do I,” Tess told him, understanding how he felt. She had fucked up really badly and just like Kyle, she had no idea if the two of them would ever be able to get past that. So rather than say anything else, she just waved shortly and got on the bus.

********************

Kyle drove back to Max’s house like a robot. He was mostly just thinking about everything that had happened. He felt bad about Tess because he really had liked her and she had ruined it. He didn’t know if he would ever be able to forgive her. He also didn’t know if he’d ever find someone else who would look at him the same way she used to look at him. Like he was the only one in the world.

He thought about what it had felt like to watch that video. It had nearly killed him inside. But he couldn’t have let Diane know that. Somebody was going to have to watch it to prove Max’s innocence. So, he had hidden those emotions through his natural comedic self. He didn’t want anyone to know just how badly those few weeks with Tess had affected him. He had fallen for her hard. But Kyle Valenti was a ladies man, and he didn’t want anyone in the world to know that one girl had gotten him so wound up.

He pulled into Max’s driveway and saw Max and Liz rushing out to him. “Hospital,” Max said as he helped Liz into the backseat before getting in next to her. Kyle tore out of the driveway and headed for their destination.

****************

Max entered the hospital with Liz by his side, and Kyle pulling up the rear, and saw his mother sitting on the chair with her head in her hands. “Mom...”

Diane looked up at him, tears in her eyes. “He’s slipped into a coma, Max. The doctors aren’t sure if he’ll ever wake up.”

Max closed his eyes, his jaw grinding. He took his mother into his arms, letting her cry into his shirt. He looked up and saw Liz’s sympathetic gaze meet his. She came over and began to stroke his hair. Kyle put his hand on Diane’s back, patting softly with an uncomfortable expression.

Just then, a nurse came in with the gruff-looking mountain man who had called the police. He was tall, had a full beard, and his large coat covered his upper half. His hat was still on his head and his glove-covered hands rubbed at each other in nervous anticipation. “Mrs. Evans...” Everyone turned to the nurse’s voice. “This is Brian Fort. He’s the man who found Phillip and called the police. He wanted to see how Phillip was doing.”

When the group turned curious heads toward the man, Diane and Liz were the only ones to gasp out loud in recognition. The man had amber eyes.

“What is it?” Max looked down at Liz, startled.

“Max...” Liz choked out, her finger slightly pointed at the man’s head. Max gave the mountain man a once over, but didn’t see anything familiar. He shook his head, not understanding. His mother had gone completely pale, as if she had seen a ghost. Her mouth hung open and she appeared to be in complete shock.

The mountain man bore a resemblance to Diane’s shocked state. His eyes had become wide, and he wasn’t sure why or how, but this woman was very important to him. A calming presence came over him suddenly.

When Diane had finally managed to choke out some words, all that came out was, “Damon?”

*****************

That night, everyone had finally gotten home from the hospital, and it was a full house once again, even with Tess gone, because this time, Damon had accompanied them. Diane had spent the last hour and a half trying to explain who she was and how she knew him. The whole time, Damon had insisted that he was Brian Fort. But once Diane had pulled the photo of them together from her purse, and the man had taken a look at himself all those years ago, pieces of the puzzle that had become his life instantly began to click together.

The man claimed that he had no family, and that he was here in the mountains taking a long vacation. When Diane had flung herself into his arms for the first time in years, she couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so complete. She didn’t notice the weird stare from Kyle, or the tears in Liz’s eyes, or even the silent confusion that Max was going through. All she could feel was this man, whom she had never once been able to stop loving.

When they had gotten home, Kyle opted to take Tess’s old bed, and Max and Liz would be sleeping in his room again. Diane didn’t bother fighting them this time. She had a pretty good idea that Liz wasn’t ready for that next step, yet, and she was more than glad. Besides, she wanted to get to know her true love again. What had bothered Diane, was Max’s easy dismissal of the man he know knew to be his real father. Max and Liz hadn’t exactly decided to sleep together. Max had just come home, grumbling incoherently about being tired and, with a reluctant smile from Liz, she had followed him. Diane was relieved that Liz was there and she could take care of Max for now. God knows that Liz is all he needs.

Diane made a pot of coffee and sat on the couch, handing Damon a cup, just the way she remembered he liked it. He took a sip and grinned in satisfaction. “Amaretto.” His voice was deep and husky, and it washed over Diane in waves. He put the cup down and faced Diane. “Wow...this is something that I never expected to encounter while heading to the store for groceries.”

“I thought you were dead.” Damon nodded, understanding why she would think that. “What happened?”

Damn shook his head this time. “I don’t know. I know I was in Desert Storm, because I woke up in this hospital bed and all these soldiers were around me. A bandage was wrapped around my head. They told me I had been shot pretty badly, a head wound, and they didn’t know if I’d ever recover from it. There had been so much damage, that nobody was able to get a proper identification on me. Nobody there knew me personally and I couldn’t remember a thing.”

“Well, what did you do after you got out of the hospital?”

“The doctors had told me that because I may never be able to remember anything from before, considering I had no one to help spark that memory, that I should start over. And I did that. They flew me back to the states, Colorado Springs, with a nice little severance pay. I found a small cabin in the mountains, and that’s where I’ve been this whole time.”

“All by yourself?” Damon nodded sadly. Diane couldn’t believe that the love of her life had been living in mystery all this time. Never knowing who he truly was, and not having a soul to help him through it. And on top of all that...he had been so close to her for so long.

“So, you and I were in love, huh?” He looked into her eyes and she looked right back, giving him a shy nod. “I can see why.” That was it. Diane had fallen in love with him all over again.

***************************

The next morning, everyone seemed to have woken up a little more chipper. Tess was no longer dragging anyone down, and the thing with Damon was still a little unbelievable. Kyle had yet to come downstairs, probably still asleep. Max and Liz had yet to make an appearance since last night as well.

Max had laid there all night, in Liz’s arms, just thinking about the fact that his real father was so close by. Max had wanted to say so much more, but the words hadn’t come to him. Seriously, what could he say? ‘Hey, Dad, it’s nice to meet ya. Thought you were dead. Where ya been all this time?’ He nearly smacked himself upside the head for that one. He couldn’t say that. He figured he would let his mother handle the details. If it hadn’t been for Liz’s comfort, he might not have been able to sleep at all last night.

Diane had laid in bed all night thinking about Phillip, who was still in the hospital, and Damon, who had spent the night on the couch. She really did feel sorry for what Phillip was going through. She may have hated him, but she had never wished death on anyone, so for Phillip to possibly die would be heart-wrenching. Even if a part of her knew that the bastard probably deserved it. She had, after all, spent seventeen years with him.

But she thought back to the many times Phillip had told her about God’s Will, and it made a certain peace come over her, knowing that even Phillip would agree that the situation he was now in was for a damn good reason.

She passed by Damon, who was just waking up on the couch. He stretched languidly, muscles popping out of his dirty wife-beater, then turned and saw her. They shared a moment, just looking into each other’s eyes, before Kyle came down the stairs. He stopped when he saw their staring contest and had to roll his eyes. “Oh God! Not more of this shit!” He was only joking, but he was waiting for Diane to scold him on his language. She didn’t. In fact, she never even looked at him. So, Kyle just rolled his eyes again and went to the kitchen for a bagel.

“How’d you sleep?” Diane asked him.

“Good! This is a nice couch.” That was lame, he thought to himself. Stupid!

“Yeah, it’s pretty brand new. Max destroyed the old one.”

Damon raised his eyebrows in question. “What happened?”

“He got your temper,” she replied wryly.

“My...” Damon was shocked. Diane hadn’t even realized what she had said until she registered the look on his face. She fought back a groan. She hadn’t wanted to tell him that way, and know he knew. “He’s...” Damon’s mouth opened and closed slowly. Diane just nodded at him. “Wow,” he whispered.

“I wish I had told you about that in a different way. I didn’t mean for it to come out like that.”

Damon shook his head, a small smile on his lips. “It’s okay. Wow, I have a son.” He thought back to what she had said a moment ago. “My temper, huh? I’m sorry.” He knew what kind of temper he had. Luckily, he lived so far away from everything, that whenever he would lose control, no one was able to see or hear his wrath. He spent most of his time cutting down trees to release the energy, and fishing to calm his tattered nerves.

Diane understood why he would be sorry. He was always that kind of person. She quickly went to reassure him. “It’s gotten much better lately. Liz is very helpful at keeping him in check.” As a mother, she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. She was glad Liz was able to help, but if Max was anything like Damon had been, then ‘helpful’ could only mean he was using that energy up in a sexual way. She shuddered involuntarily.

Damon noticed. “Cold?”

Diane smiled at how big of a heart he obviously still had. “No, just thinking.” They continued to look at each other before Diane released her stare. “Um...are you hungry?”

As if on cue, Damon’s stomach growled. He laughed. “Yeah, it sounds like I’m starving.”

“Come on.” Diane reached her hand out to him and as soon as Damon had touched it, those sparks flew. They stopped and looked back at each other, neither wanting to break the contact. They each swallowed back a moan. Before Diane knew what was happening, she was inside the circle of Damon’s arms and his lips were crushed against her own.

He pulled back and leaned his forehead against hers. “God, I’ve missed this. I didn’t even know it was missing until just now.” Diane moaned loudly at his beautiful words, feeling like a twenty year old again.

When they heard footsteps coming down the stairs, they reluctantly pulled apart, sharing a secret smile. Liz was wearing a tank top and a pair of Max’s boxers, and Max wore gray sweat pants and nothing else. Max and Liz looked between their flushed faces. Liz snickered, unable to hold it in, and Max just continued to stare.

Damon turned to look at his son, and fell in love with the boy. He looked Max up and down, just taking in what his son looked like. He watched Max shift uncomfortably under his scrutiny, and decided to stop what he was doing, not wanting to scare the boy.

“Morning, Max,” Damon said.

Max looked at the man almost the same way he had been looked at, staring at his father for the first time. He had to admit, the man from the photo Diane had shown him had changed quite a lot. He now wore a full beard and his hair had a few grays. He was taller, and it wasn’t hard to tell how much stronger. Max just nodded at him, not knowing what to call him.

He immediately reached behind him and found Liz’s hand, which she was more than happy to offer. He needed her support and she planned on doing just that.

“Max, why don’t you go on in the kitchen. Kyle’s already helped himself to the fridge.” Max nodded stiffly and he and Liz followed Diane’s instructions.

“I have to admit,” Damon started to say, “My son has very good taste.” Diane smiled at him and took him into the kitchen.

*********************

A few hours later, Damon had showered and shaved his beard clean off. He had done it because he wanted to resemble to boy in the picture. The boy Diane had loved and conceived a beautiful baby boy with. Max, Liz, and Kyle had been filled in on everything that had happened to Damon and where he had been. It was a lot to take in at once, and Diane understood Max’s apprehension of Damon. Damon seemed to understand it as well. He promised himself not to pressure Max, and just hoped to someday have a relationship with him.

There was no news about Phillip, and Damon felt a little strange comforting Diane over another man, now that he had found her and wanted her all to himself. Every time he looked into her eyes, he knew he was hopelessly in love with her. And yet, a part of him barely knew her. But the part of him that did know her, wanted out, and seemed to come out whenever she was around him. He liked that part of him. He just wished he had found her sooner.

Diane and Damon both knew that Max needed some time, and they were more than willing to give it to him. Max was grateful for it. Max knew that Damon was his father. He always knew that he wanted to get to know his father. Every since he had been able to accept the fact that Phillip wasn’t his dad, Max ached to know the real man who had fathered him. But now that the man was here, in his home, Max had no idea what to say to him. Everyone was sure though, that in time, Max and Damon would have their heart-to-heart, and hopefully all would fall into place perfectly.

**********************

One Week Later...

Damon had been staying with Diane and Max since that day at the hospital. He had tried several times to talk to Max, but school and Liz was all Max seemed to have time for. Liz hadn’t gone back to the barracks yet either, but Damon hadn’t been able to talk to her much. She was always so tired, on medication and recovering from her injury.

Damon had been spending as much time as he could with Diane, getting to know her once again. He wouldn’t deny the attraction that he still felt for her, that he assumed he would always feel for her. He wanted that woman in the worst way, but was afraid to overstep his bounds with her. Other than a few steamy kisses here and there, and long nights of talking about the past eighteen years, nothing else had changed between them.

Phillip was still in the coma, and the evil part of Damon, hoped he would never come out of it. He knew that it was selfish, the way he wanted Diane and Max all to himself now, but when Diane had told him all Phillip had done, he was in a rage. He wanted to kill the son-of-a-bitch for the way he had treated Max. He had almost lost it that night. Luckily, Diane remembered how to calm him down, and a few hot kisses later, he was feeling better. But he still wanted to pull the plug himself.

He had managed to corner Liz one morning while she was eating breakfast, and she had happily told him all she knew about Max. The way she loved his son sparkled in her eyes whenever she said his name. She spoke of Max like he was god’s gift, and Damon was happy that Max had found someone who loved him the way Liz did. Those two were definitely in it for the long haul. He just wished that Max would open up to him now.

Diane woke up the next morning, feeling oh so refreshed. She and Damon had taken that final step last night, and it had been wonderful. After a whole week of long stares and hot kisses, they had given into the temptation of one another again. She almost felt like a total slut. Her husband was in the hospital hanging onto his life and here she was with the love of her life warming the bed. She came downstairs on a mission, planning to finally have that talk with Max and Liz about their sleeping arrangements. She came into the kitchen and saw them engaged in some sort of conversation. Their heads were close together and they were whispering.

Diane noticed that when Max and Liz saw her in the kitchen, they desperately made an attempt to escape and she wouldn’t allow it. “Get over here!”

The two stopped in their tracks and Max said, “Mom...maybe now’s not the best time for this. Umm...” He was having a hard time just looking at her. Hell, the whole neighborhood could have heard her cries of pleasure in the middle of the night. And the poor woman had no idea they had heard it. Liz, at his side, wasn’t doing much better. She was turning red and chewing on her lip. It was so hard to imagine that the woman in front of them was crying out last night. The dirty things she had screamed were still fresh in the kids’ minds, and they were having a hard time getting over it. Max knew that he was now scarred for life.

Diane snorted loudly. “When did you become so level-headed, Max? If anything, you’ve always been the hothead around here, not me.” Max rubbed the back of his neck and Liz was biting her lip. “Sit,” she demanded and they obeyed.

Damon overheard Diane as he was coming downstairs from the shower. He walked into the kitchen and saw that Diane was about to have a talk with Max and Liz, so he attempted to back out, but Diane stopped. “It’s okay, Damon, you can stay. Max, Liz, and I were just going to discuss that little thing that you and I talked about last night.”

Max put his head in his hands, wondering exactly when they had talked because all he remembered was his mother screaming. He couldn’t look at them. Not knowing what they had done last night just down the hall from him. Max and Liz had sat down, part of them dreadfully anticipating Diane’s reaction to their late-night excursions in his bed, and another part of them truly embarrassed at the situation.

“Mom, we haven’t been doing any...” Max didn’t get to finish because he could have sworn he actually heard his mother’s light chortle. Max and Liz looked up to see that her face was now controlled. They looked at each other, knowing they had both heard it, but her expression revealed nothing. Damon himself wondered what was going on.

“Are the two of you at least using protection?” It was a serious question and Max shifted, embarrassed. I can’t believe this is happening, Max thought. Damon took a deep breath. He felt a little strange talking about this because he didn’t really know Max as a son yet. A part of him was all giddy that they were including him on this, though, and Max’s reaction was classic.

“Mom...” His face was completely maroon and Liz couldn’t help thinking how cute it was.

“Yes, Diane.” Liz took control of the situation, and Diane was pleasantly surprised when the girl finally used her first name. It definitely meant that they were really getting somewhere. Damon was shocked at how in control the petite girl was, taking on this monster of a woman in front of her. “I’m on the pill.”

“Really?!” Diane asked, still expressionless. “Well, then, I guess there won’t be any little ones with uncontrollable tempers running around my house anytime soon.” A blush lit up both Max and Liz’s cheeks, even as Liz tried to remain calm in this little face off with Diane. Damon couldn’t hide his smile.

Max grumbled under his breath, “Not from us...”

Diane hadn’t caught it though, and went on. “And does the pill protect against sexually transmitted diseases?”

“Mom!” Max was highly flustered now.

Liz was about to retort, but then caught Diane’s unabashed smirk.

Liz rolled her eyes and chose not to answer that. “I’m going to take a shower.” She left the room, feeling that it was a good thing to get that out of the way, and before Max could follow her, Damon grabbed his upper arm. Max stared at his hand in horror, imagining where it had been last night, a disgusted look coming over his features.

“Just one, quick thing.” Max was never happier when he stopped touching him.

“What is it?” Max asked, a little worried.

“How’s everything going with you two?” Diane just sat on, just watching the father-son interaction.

“Oh,” Max felt fuzzy inside that his father was asking about his relationship with Liz. “I think we’re moving along just fine. She’s getting through this slowly and I’m...”

“No, no, that’s not what I mean.”

Max frowned. “Well, what then?”

“I was curious if you...maybe...wanted to talk about...”

Max really wished he would get to the point. “What?”

“Performance-wise...how do you think you’re doing?” Max was at a loss. He wasn’t exactly sure what Damon was getting at and his expression showed it. “Ya know, do you need any tips, or anything like that?” His face took on a look of realization and then utter disgust.

WHAT?!” He couldn’t believe the man was standing here with a straight face and saying this to him. This was gross! Diane nearly broke out in full-blown laughter. Damon was doing a great job of making Max turn beet red.

Damon was cracking up on the inside. Diane had told him what to say. She had planned to make Max squirm a little bit. She knew she wouldn’t be able to keep him and Liz apart and so she felt this would make him feel awkward enough to not go there with Liz in her house. Anymore, anyway.

Kyle came past them toward the refrigerator at that moment, surprising Diane because she hadn’t even known he was there, and had to get in on the game. He couldn’t resist. “Oh, I don’t think Max has any problems in that department, you guys. I’m really getting tired of hearing, ‘Oh Max, yes!’, ‘Max, don’t stop!’, and the always popular, ‘Oh, Max, right there!’” His voice had shrieked loudly while he was imitating Liz.

Kyle!” Max screamed, more embarrassed than he had ever been in his life! He needed a deep, dark, hole, and he needed to crawl into it right this instant. He closed his eyes tightly, hoping beyond all hope that maybe, just maybe, if he couldn’t see them then they couldn’t see him. No such luck. Kyle, Damon, and his mother were rolled over with laughter and Max excused himself, having nothing more to say to any of them.

He almost passed Liz in the hall. Liz shook her head at him in disbelief. "I don't really sound like that, do I?"

The parental laughter didn’t last long, though. Kyle couldn’t help himself when he said on the way out of the kitchen, “And that goes for you guys, too.”

"Damn right!" Max yelled from the hallway. "The whole neighborhood heard you horndogs last night! And I get a lecture!"

Kyle grinned when he caught their reactions. Diane and Damon nearly fell over in shock. Diane looked over at her amber-eyed lover and whispered in horror, “Am I really that loud?”

****************

One Month Later...

Diane sat at her desk, her emotions in turmoil. Phillip had yet to come out of the coma and the doctor had informed her that he surely had brain damage. And that the longer he stayed in the coma, the worse it would get.

Damon had been an absolute saint. He had comforted her whenever he could, and listened whenever she would talk. He had moved out of his small cabin by then, and into Diane’s house. He said that he didn’t want to spend another minute away from her or Max. Diane had to admit that she wanted him there as much as he wanted to be there. Right now, Damon was on the job-hunt during most of the days, claiming he didn’t want to mooch off of her.

Max and Liz were slowly inching their way back together. She even caught them sneaking kisses behind her back, or so they had thought. They really were good for each other. Liz had been given two months convalescent leave, with a little pull from Diane, for her shoulder to heal. It really did help to have friends in high places in the military. Diane had allowed Liz to stay with her, Max, and Damon until she was ready to go back to work.

Originally, Diane had wanted to send Liz back to the barracks, but with Phillip in the hospital and everything that had happened, she knew that Max would be with Liz more often than not, and wasn’t ready to be without her son right now. So, she had asked Liz to stay, that way Max would have no need to be anywhere else.

The Finance unit would be coming back from Iraq in less than a month, and everyone who had been kept back was more than excited to see their buddies again. Liz had been practically jumping up and down at the thought of her best friend coming back. Diane was excited as well. Reserve soldiers had been brought in to replace the ones that had left, and unfortunately, they weren’t doing the greatest job. It wasn’t really their fault. They had learned quickly and were helping the best they could, but no one knew the job better than her own soldiers, and it would be good to get them back in the offices.

The hospital had just called her office and were curious as to what Diane wanted to do about Phillip. She was still his wife and therefore, this was her decision to make. Diane looked down at her hands, where Phillip’s will laid, and read over it once again. She had read it three times. She knew what Phillip wanted, but she wanted to read it just once more.

**************

Max had just gotten home from school. There was a big plate of brownies on the kitchen counter and a note from Liz.

I made these for you. Extra chocolatey. They say it’s an aphrodisiac. I’ll be in your room.

Liz

Max looked around for his mother, hoping to god that she hadn’t seen this note. When he realized that she was nowhere to be found, he tucked the note in his pocket and made his way to his bedroom. He opened the door, expecting to see a goddess in red leather with whips and chains. Boy, was he surprised.

His angel was wearing a white tank top and the boxers she had bought him for Christmas. And she was also asleep.

He grabbed his guitar from the corner of his room and began to strum the chords gently, easing her into wakefulness.

When she lifted her gaze to his she began to talk. “I’m sorry. I must have fallen asleep waiting for you.”

“It’s okay. I want to do something for you.”

Liz smiled. “I’d really appreciate it if you could do something to me.” Her sling had come off and she was feeling so much better. She really wanted to show Max just how well her arm was healing.

Max shushed her playfully and she giggled. He got down on his knees, feeling it would be more special for her that way. “Here’s a little something from my boys, KISS.” He playfully stuck his tongue out and shook his head wildly, while Liz laughed at his cuteness.

He went back to the guitar, his fingers plucking the strong chords. Neither lover noticed the amber eyes watching from the doorway.

I gotta tell you what I’m feelin’ inside
I could lie to myself, but it’s true
There’s no denyin’ when I look in your eyes
Girl, I’m outta my head over you

I’ve lived so long believin’ all love is blind
But everything about you
Is tellin’ me this time
It’s Forever

Damon wasn’t sure if he had ever felt pride clog his chest the way it was doing so right now.

This time I know and there’s no doubt in my mind
Forever
Until my life is through
Girl, I’ll be lovin’ you Forever

Liz’s eyes began to leak again. God, this guy never ceases to make me cry! Max simply smiled at her.

I hear the echo of a promise I made
When you’re strong, you can stand on your own

Damon felt Diane come up behind him, wondering what was happening, and he stopped her, just wanting to watch his son. Diane watched along with him, witnessing this display of affection for the first time herself.

But those words grow distant as I look at your face
No, I don’t wanna go it alone
I never thought I’d lay my heart on the line
But everything about you is telling me this time
It’s Forever

This time I know and there’s no doubt in my mind
Forever
Until my life is through
Girl, I’ll be lovin’ you Forever

He went into the refrain, strumming the guitar expertly, yet staring at the chords. Liz giggled again and he explained, “Don’t wanna mess it up.” This next part meant the most to him and he tried to show it when he looked into her eyes again.

I see my future when I look in your eyes
It took your love to make my heart come alive
Cuz I lived my life believin’ all love is blind
But everything about you is telling me this time
It’s Forever

This time I know and there’s no doubt in my mind
Forever
Until my life is through
Girl, I’ll be lovin’ you Forever
KISS - Forever

He discarded the guitar and climbed into the bed with her, or rather, on top of her, as she had laid back. He kissed her passionately before pulling back, sensing she had to say something. “Did you just learn that?”

“Actually, I was working on it for another DVD, but I’m not so sure about those anymore.” His wry expression there. Damon clenched his fists at the pain his son had been put through.

Liz shook her head. “Don’t! Don’t do that...don’t spoil it with bad memories.” Max complied, kissing her softly, his tongue slipping delicately into her sweet mouth. When they came up for air, Liz had her fingers underneath his shirt, inching it up to get it off of him.

“Are you sure you’re ready for...” His control was slipping significantly as her hands worked the zipper on his jeans. “Because we don’t have to...” Damon quickly closed the door and pushed Diane down the hall, where he could tell she wanted to stop what was happening in that room.

He put a finger to her lips. “Let them be.”

“Are you crazy?!” She whispered.

He shook his head, amused. “They’re in love. Don’t you remember what that feels like?”

Diane smiled then, snaking her arms around his neck and leaning in for a kiss. “I’m starting to.”

Back in Max’s Room...

Liz silenced him when her fingers wrapped around his shaft. “There’s no need to overanalyze this, Max. You want me and I so desperately want you right now.” She turned her puppy dog eyes to him. “Don’t you want to give me whatever I want?”

He growled low in his throat before kissing her with wild abandon, his hands roaming all over her body, attempting to get rid of clothes at the same time.

Once they were bared before each other, Max thrust inside of her. “Yessss...” Oh, there it was. He was home. And it was perfect. His movements were slow, and controlled.

Liz kissed every inch of skin she could reach. The pace was driving her insane. She needed faster and harder and more! Max sensed it and thrust harder and harder, his lungs burning from all the moaning. He could hear Liz’s cries getting huskier, too, her moans had been even louder than his. After all, no one was home anyway.

Max flipped them over, wanting Liz to ride him. He missed her being in control. She was so damn good at it. His fingers delicately skated over her skin, touching her wherever he could. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed being inside her.

They hadn’t gone any further than a little innocent petting in the past month. Max was fine with the pace, just glad that he was getting to touch her and kiss her again whenever he wanted. But he had to admit, this was so much better.

He felt that brink coming and he knew she was close, too. He fingered that little nub again, remembering how crazy it had driven her the last time he had done it. “Oh my God! Max!” Liz felt an immediate release as she screamed out her feelings. Thank God, Max had held his hand over her mouth the first time, or her parents would’ve caught an earful. Then again, judging by her screams, Maria could have probably heard her in Iraq.

The climax was perfect. Two souls intertwining in excellent blissfulness. They kissed sloppily and lazily as they came down. Liz laid her head on his strong chest, and closed her eyes. Before she fell asleep though, she told him, “You’d better be dressed by the time your mom comes home.”

***************

After Diane had kissed Damon in the hallway, he had noticed the air around her change and asked what was wrong. Now, they stood in the hospital together, and Diane was talking to the doctor about her husband’s few options. They should have been thanking their lucky stars that they had left the house before they overheard Liz and Max in his bedroom. “Doctor, I have read my husband’s will...many times, actually. And as far as he was concerned...it’s time to pull the plug.”

AN: Alright, let me just respond to some feedback, first.

Lazza, I think the only reason Tess's parents responded to what Tess did, in the way that they did, was because they were laying up in a hospital bed in Germany. There wasn't a whole lot they could do from where they were, so they sent her off. They really couldn't smack her upside the head through the phone, lol.

Jason's Lover, you are hilarious! That was a great way to sum it all up, lol.

Liz86000, I'm sorry, I totally forgot about Liz's parents. If you read on, there is a little something to make up for it. I guess they just weren't important enough to the story, lol. But hopefully, this next part clears that up.

Ellie, thanks again for the feedback. Without it, the story wouldn't have turned out the way it did. So, everyone say thanks to Ellie for bringing Damon back.

NorafanofMaxandLiz, thanks for all your feedback throughout the course of this story. And ya never know, I may write some more soon.

And once again, thanks to Lissalou for being the best beta EVER!

And as for everyone else, thanks for all your wonderful feedback. I know, it kinda sucks that's it's over, but I hope you all enjoyed it.

CHAPTER 45

“Are you sure, Sergeant Major Evans? Because even though he may want this, it’s still your decision. We can keep him on as long as you feel is needed.”

Diane nodded, a tear falling down her cheek. “I know, but this is what he wanted. I’d like to at least fulfill his last wish.”

The doctor nodded sadly, only being able to imagine how the woman must feel. “Would you like to call your son here, to say his goodbyes to his father?”

Diane felt Damon’s hand tighten on her shoulder. Damon didn’t like other people being called Max’s father. Max was his son and no one else’s. Besides the fact that the man in that bed didn’t deserve his son’s last respects.

Diane turned back to Damon, silently asking for permission to call Max, and Damon couldn’t deny her. He nodded almost imperceptibly and Diane pulled out the cell phone to call Max.

*****************

“Stop it,” Liz giggled, slapping Max’s hands away from her sides where he was tickling her. When the phone started ringing, she was relieved and watched Max get up, his cute naked butt walking away.

“Yeah?” he asked into the phone, a smile on his face. His smile suddenly faded and Liz sat up in bed, concern washing over her. She watched Max’s jaw clench before he said, “Yeah, alright. I’m coming.” He hung up the phone and picked up his jeans, zipping them up.

“What’s up?” Liz asked.

“Mom’s pulling the plug.” Liz took a deep breath. “I should go down there, and...say goodbye.” He put a t-shirt on and watched Liz get up to get dressed as well. “You don’t have to go with me.”

“I want to,” she said as she zipped up her own jeans. “You might need me,” she grinned.

“I always need you,” he grinned back, and put on his sneakers.

As they drove to the hospital, so many things were fumbling around in Max’s head. He wasn’t sure how he felt about having to say goodbye to a man who had clearly loved him for so many years, and then, at the drop of a dime, had been able to turn his back. Max knew that Phillip had taught him an important life lesson. He would never treat his son in such a way. Ever. No matter what may happen, his own son would be loved unconditionally for all of his life. And that goes for his future daughter, too. With her brown hair and brown doe-eyes. He glanced over at his angel, his heat full of wishes.

*****************

Liz sat in the waiting room while Max was in the room with Phillip. She had the phone to her ear. “I’m so sorry, honey, I wish we could come out sooner.” Her mother was on the other line.

“Mom, it’s okay, I know you guys will come see me as soon as you can.”

“We just have to get somebody to cover for us here and then we’ll be there, I promise.”

“Mom, it’s really okay. I’m doing a lot better. I wish I could come see you, but Max really needs me right now.”

“As much as I would rather Max just come with you, I can understand. Don’t worry sweetie, as soon as we can get someone with a good head on their shoulders, we’ll be there. We love you.”

“I love you guys, too. Bye.”

Diane smiled, wishing there was a way she could send Liz home for a little while, but at the same time, overjoyed that Liz loved her son so much to be there for him despite everything else.

*************************

Max sat at Phillip’s bedside, just looking at the man in the bed. He wished he had more compassion for him, but Max didn’t feel anything but resentment and hatred. He wished he could have said a nice goodbye, but all Max could think was Good Riddance.

“Hey,” a deep voice came from the door and Max looked up to see his real father. Damon came to sit on the other side of Phillip. “You don’t feel anything do you?”

Max shook his head slowly. “I don’t get it. For seventeen years, he was the only father I had, and for some reason, I can’t shed a single tear.”

“That’s because he’s a son-of-a-bitch,” Damon didn’t hesitate in saying. “And you’re my blood. We don’t forgive easily.”

Max nodded, knowing he was right. Max couldn’t forgive Phillip for what he had done, and he wasn’t sure if he ever would. Phillip was laying here, about to die, and Max couldn’t feel any emotion for him. “Fuck it,” Max grumbled as he got up. “Pull the plug.” Max got up and waited for Damon to do the same. Damon then came over to Max, placing his large hand on the boy’s shoulder. Max looked into the eyes that mirrored his own, and couldn’t help himself when he hugged the man. “Thank you.”

“What for?” Damon asked as he hugged his son back.

“For being here. For me. For Mom.” Max looked up to meet his eyes again and allowed Damon to lead him out of the room, his hand never leaving his son’s shoulder. When he got back out to the waiting room, Liz saw his distress and put her arms around him.

“Are you alright?” Max nodded, giving her a small smile. He turned to Diane, who was looking at him expectantly, and he nodded at her that he was ready. Diane turned back to the doctor, and told him once again, that it was time to say goodbye.

**********************

Damon and Max sat at the kitchen table, just one week after Phillip had passed away, eating cereal, and getting to know one another. “So, you lived in a cabin in the mountains?”

“Yeah.”

“What’d you do up there?”

“I used to cut down trees and sell the wood, fish and hunt for most of my dinners.”

“Wow...do you think you could teach me how to hunt?”

Damon smiled widely. “Son, I would be honored to teach you how to hunt.” They smiled at each other and went back to their breakfast, glad that they were definitely getting somewhere.

*********************

Six Months Later...

Tess stepped out of the building, the sun blinding her eyes. She stood up tall and straight, ready to take on the world once again, and who knew, maybe she would join the army after all, just like her parents.

The whole time Tess had been away, all she could think about was everything she had done over the past year. Everything that had happened had still seemed to make her a better person. She didn’t want to stop being the person this disciplined life in Military School had taught her. Maybe joining the Army would help her to maintain that discipline.

She wanted to apologize once again to Max, Kyle, and Liz, hoping that this time they would forgive her. She wasn’t sure, deep down, if she would ever forgive herself for the pain she had caused everyone, but she now knew that the least she could do was move past it. She could start again, and this time, she promised herself, she wouldn’t let herself or her parents down again.

Speaking of which, Michelle and Roger stood outside, waiting for her. They smiled at her when she came out. There was already a change about her. The better person they hoped she would be seemed to radiate through her smile and they knew they had made the right choice.

Almost from the moment Tess had been there, Roger and Michelle got nothing but good reviews from the school. Tess had been handling herself very well there and had managed to fit in quite nicely. They had been relieved. After they had done it, they had wondered if they were doing the right thing, but considering what Tess had done, and the fact that they were laid up in hospital beds, it was the only decision they felt would be acceptable for her atrocious behavior.

Looking at her now, in her uniform, they couldn’t have been more proud. They embraced her, tears falling down from all of their eyes.

**********************

Diane shifted in bed, rolling over on her side to study the sleeping man beside her. She lifted her left hand, and admired the brand new engagement ring. Damon had popped the question just days ago, and hopefully pretty soon, a wedding was on the way. So for now, they had spent hours upon hours in this very bedroom, reacquainting themselves with each other. A smile lit up her face when his eyes fluttered open and he smiled back at her. “Morning, beautiful,” his voice rasped.

“Good morning.” He pulled her close to him, giving her a proper good morning kiss. “How long was I out?”

Diane glanced at the clock. “About four hours.”

“Oh, boy,” he said as he rolled on top of her, “What am I doing sleeping? We’ve got seventeen years to make up for.” They kissed deeply as Damon brought Diane to another high that morning.

*******************

The soldiers got off the plane, and came through the gate where the entire Finance unit was in uniform and waiting to greet them with balloons and huge Welcome Back banners. When they came through, Liz ran straight to Maria and hugged her fiercely. Then she pulled back to see if the rumor had been true.

A smile came over her face. “Well look at you, Sergeant!” Maria smiled and Michael gave her a proud grin. Liz decided to mess with her a bit. “What was it you said about being a Sergeant again?”

Maria bit out in good humor, “Why would anyone ever want to be one? Yeah, yeah! Look, I didn’t really even do anything to get pinned!” Liz laughed and Michael put his arm around her, able to be open with their relationship now that he wasn’t her superior any longer.

“She’s so modest.” He looked into her green eyes and leaned in, “And so damn cute!” Just before he was able to kiss her, there was a tap on Michael’s shoulder. He turned around to see who was interrupting his moment.

“Sergeant Guerin, Sergeant DeLuca...” It was Command Sergeant Major Evans. “While your relationship is legal now, you are still soldiers, and while in uniform, must maintain...”

Maria cut her off. “Just this once, Sergeant Major?” Maria pleaded with her, and Diane nodded slightly, letting them have their kiss.

Alex was the next to get his Liz time. He gave her a big hug. “Feeling better?”

“Much, thanks to you!” Her expression grew serious. “You saved my life, Whitman. Looks like I’m in your debt forever.”

“Really?!” Alex wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. “How would a feel about a lap dance, then?”

“Whitman!” Liz slapped him good-naturedly on the arm.

*******************************

“What’s up with Kyle?”

“He’s been talking to Tess again.”

Liz nearly flew back to look into his eyes, obviously disapproving.

“They’re just talking, baby. Kyle’s not sure if he can give her any more than friendship at this point, but he says that he likes talking to her. So, I guess, we’ll see how it works out for them.”
Liz nodded in understanding. It was always nice to have someone to talk to, and hopefully, Kyle felt like she deserved his time, because she had given him enough hassle all ready, as far as Liz was concerned. “He also said that she apologized again...to all of us.”

“Rah rah,” she said sarcastically. Liz just couldn’t forgive her yet, and she wasn’t sure if she ever could. She looked back at Max. “So, you’re leaving tomorrow, huh?”

“Yup,” Max told her as she lay on his chest. Tomorrow he would be getting on a plane and he wouldn’t be back for 19 weeks.

“I’ll miss you,” Liz told him.

“Not as much as I’ll miss you,” he said back.

“Yeah, right. You’re gonna be so busy you won’t even be thinking about me.”

“Yeah right!” He mocked her. “You’re always on my mind.” He mocked her. “You’re always on my mind.” Max grew serious then, looking into her eyes. “Maybe...while I’m gone...you shouldn’t wait for me.”

Liz nearly cried. She began to shake her head in the negative.

“You should be able to experience everything without me tying you down.”

She was about to scream at him when she distinctly saw his lips quirk upward. She slapped him lightly on the chest. “Jerk!”

“What?!” He laughed. “Hey, you did it to me.”

“I’m sorry,” she said sincerely. “I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Then, he picked up her right hand, where promise ring wrapped around her finger, and pressed a gentle kiss there. “I told you, one day it would be the other hand. And I promise that it will be, as soon as I can afford a real one,” he laughed at his own joke and Liz laughed at how cute he was. He kissed her deeply, massaging her tongue with his own, and entered her in one motion, making her cry out.

I changed up that last paragraph, and added your ideas above it, too.

“Don’t leave me,” Liz pouted.

“Ouch,” he whispered. “I never realized how much those words had hurt you that night. They really sting.” She smiled and nodded. She had only said it to make him feel the way he had made her feel when she had been leaving. She arched her hips to make him move again, and he did. He didn’t disappoint her. Their lovemaking was perfect as always, and Max knew that when he left her in the morning, he would be coming back to her as a real man, with a plan for their future together. He would never let her go, and he knew that she knew it.

**************************

“Raise your right hand. Repeat after me...I, state your name...”

With his right hand raised, he repeated everything the man told him to, “I, Max Evans, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, So help me God.” Max lowered his hand. The officer in front of him smiled broadly and shook his hand. “Congratulations, soldier.” Max took the officer’s hand with a smile, ready to take on the world of military justice, as a 27 Delta, or as a civilian would call it, a Paralegal Specialist.

Four Months, Three Weeks, And Three Days Later............

The cabin that Damon had once lived in sat in an unusually secluded place in the mountains. In fact, the group had passed nothing for miles on their way there. Damon had remained the sole owner of the property when he had moved out, so he was sure that no one would bother them there, and he had even told Max that anytime he needed to get away, the cabin would be there for him. Max knew that he would take Damon up on that offer once in a while.

Max hadn’t had a chance to change yet, still in his Class A uniform after graduating A.I.T. (Advanced Individual Training) in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, at the top of his class, yay! Damon, Diane, and Liz had picked him up after his graduation ceremony in Ft. Jackson, hopped on a plane to Colorado Springs, and driven up to his cabin in the mountains for the weekend. Damon had driven, while Diane slept in the front seat, with Max and Liz in the back, attached at the hip. They were quietly loving each other with small kisses and caresses since they hadn’t seen each other in 4 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. So, they had plenty of time to make up for. Not to mention the surprise that Max had planned for Liz.

“So, how was it?” Liz asked quietly. Max pulled Liz closer to his side.

“Ya know...it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”

“You’re a pogue now, son!” Damon said from the front. “A pencil pusher, baby!” Max just rolled his eyes at his Dad’s jest. Max knew that in the army, if you weren’t infantry, you were a pogue. He could deal with that. Liz smiled at Max and leaned in for a kiss, which Max happily granted. The kiss grew deeper, Max feeling himself grow hard inside his green dress pants. His hands began to wander, pulling Liz onto his lap, forgetting completely where he was.

“Hey, hey, hey!” came from the man driving. “Stop steaming up the windows back there!” Max and Liz broke apart suddenly, blushing. “If I ain’t gettin any, you ain’t gettin any!”

“Dad!” Max felt a shudder go straight up his spine at the thought of his mother....Gah! He couldn’t even think it. Liz slid off Max’s lap, back into her seat and tried her hardest to keep her hands off of him until they reached the cabin, at the very least.

*****************

Max and Damon had gone out hunting and fishing, promising their girls a full dinner when they got back. Diane and Liz were currently dancing around and making the cabin somewhat more livable.

“I’m so proud of him,” Diane couldn’t help gushing.

“So am I,” Liz reiterated with a dreamy look on her face.

“I can’t believe how well everything seems to be working out.”

“Neither can I,” Liz agreed.

“I mean...” Diane tried to explain, “Not that Phillip’s death was a good thing, but...” Liz nodded, already understanding where Diane was going with this. “It just seems that with everything that happened, you and Max finding each other and Phillip being a stupid drunk-driver, Damon would have never came back into my life. I should be on my knees thanking Phillip for trying to kill himself."

“Yeah, I know what you mean...if it weren’t for that skank being such a cum-guzzling gutter-slut...” she stopped when Diane giggled, “Then, I wouldn’t have known deep down that Max was the one. The fact that I was willing to fight for him, even after what she had done, that I was willing to go through all of that in Iraq, knowing I’d come back for him, it made me realize how much I needed to look at things objectively. Being able to fight for what I want, and keeping my mind straight at the same time."

“Always a good thing,” Diane pointed out.

Just then, the boys walked in, smelling like sweat and nature. Damon had a bucket of fresh salmon while Max came in empty-handed.

“What? No bears?” Liz teased. Max gave her a half-smile and a shrug.

“It’s alright, Max,” Damon threw out there. “We’ll get that deer next time, son.”

Max smiled at him with a shy, “Thanks.”

Damon gave Diane a sweet kiss, and she welcomed him home safely, and handed over the bucket of fish, teaching her how to prepare them for cooking. Max went over to kiss Liz, but she immediately backed up. “You stink, buddy. Get in the shower first.”

Max pouted and said, “You know, if you truly loved me, this wouldn’t matter.”

Liz rolled her eyes at how cute he could be and smacked a quick kiss on his lips, pulling away before he had the chance to deepen it.

“Go on, Max. Take the shower. I have to show your mom how to cook a salmon.” Max smiled and touched Liz’s cheek tenderly, before going to the bathroom. Liz found herself giggling like a school-girl suddenly. When she turned back to Diane and Damon, she noticed Damon smirking at her and asked about it. “Watch this.” He leaned in and touched Diane’s cheek just as tenderly as Max had done to Liz, and sure enough, Diane giggled like a school-girl.

Once Damon had come out of the shower, the group sat down at the small wooden table. Halfway through dinner, everyone seemed to be laughing and having a good time. Then, Liz noticed Damon whispering into Max’s ear. She then saw Max glance ay her nervously before turning back to his father. “Now?!” he whispered, loudly.

“As good a time as any, son,” Damon whispered right back.

When Liz saw Max take a very large gulp of his water, and all eyes turned to look at her, she gave Max a confused look. Max licked his lips and took her hand. “Liz...” His Adam’s apple bobbed and she could swear he was sweating. “You know I love you, right?”

Liz nodded. “I love you, too, Max.”

“How long?”

“Hmm?”

“How long do you think you could love me?”

Liz felt her heart rate speed up as she took his face in her small hands. “I will love you until the day I die.”

“You mind if I hold you to that?” When Liz looked at him in question, Max reached into his pocket, and dropped to both knees. He pulled out the ring box. When he opened the box, Liz saw the most beautiful diamond ring in the galaxy before her.

“Oh, my...” Liz’s shaking hands flew to her face, covering her mouth.

“Liz Parker...please...” Diane’s eyes filled up with tears and Damon gave her a small smile, putting an arm around her. “Be my Mrs....Sergeant...Evans.”

Liz threw her arms around her brand new fiancé and peppered kisses all over his gorgeous face. “Yes...Yes...Yes!” Max smiled thankfully, and pulling her into his strong embrace on the wooden floor.

“That’s my boy,” Damon said with a proud smirk.

Later that night, just past the stroke of midnight, Max and Liz were sitting up long after Diane and Damon had gone to bed.

“This is so amazing,” Liz whispered as she held her hand out, admiring her ring. Max smiled at her, happy that she liked her gift.

“I was actually really nervous,” Max admitted.

“Why?!”

“I didn’t know if you’d say yes.”

“Max...you knew that I would say yes.”

“No, I really didn’t. I wasn’t sure if you were ready for marriage yet. I remember when I gave you the promise ring...the fear you had in your eyes until you saw what it was.”

“Well, at that time, you’re right, I wasn’t ready for marriage. But it’s been a year since then. I’m a little older now,” Liz smiled.

“And so am I.”

Liz began to panic. “Are you sure you’re ready. I mean, you’re...I mean we’re still pretty young.”

“I’m not too young to know that you’re it for me. I’m going to love you for the rest of my life. And If you ever leave me, I know I’ll never love again.”

“Oh, Max.” Liz leaned forward and kissed him long and hard. “I’m not going anywhere...ever.” Max kissed Liz again before pulling away.

“Wait a minute.”

“What?” Liz asked, getting anxious. Max got off the couch and grabbed her hand, taking her with him.

“We can’t do this here. My parents are right next door.”

“Like that’s ever stopped them,” Liz giggled when Max shot her a mortified look.

Max led Liz behind the cabin, about 30 meters away, where there was a large green tent, with a fire pit outside, under the stars. White rose petals lay scattered around the fire and led into the tent, where the sleeping bag made for two could be seen from where they were standing. “Do you like it?” he asked as Liz fully walked into the room.

“I didn’t notice this before,” Liz said in awe.

“Yeah, Dad kinda helped me set it up. So we could have some privacy.”

“It’s perfect,” Liz said as she pulled him close to her.

“Perfect, huh?” Max asked with a sly smile.

“Oh yeah.” After that, Liz was done talking. She kissed him softly, opening herself to him. She was so in love with him at this moment that she felt like her heart was about to burst. She gently, but eagerly, peeled his shirt from his body. When he was busy unbuttoning her top, she was busy unbuttoning his jeans.

He sucked in a breath when she got a hold of him, stroking him to get him ready. Not that he needed it, he was always ready for her. When he got her unclothed, he felt a shiver run through her, and he led her into the tent, where the fire had managed to keep it warm. He laid her down on top of the sleeping bag. He hovered above her, just tracing her face with his eyes. Liz knew what he was doing, and she found herself doing the same to him.

When she couldn’t wait any longer, she lifted up on her elbows, and kissed him. He opened his lips over hers, deepening their kiss, needing more suddenly. He wanted to take the moment slow, remembering every detail. Life was too short, and he never wanted to forget her. His hands lovingly caressed the sides of her breasts, and further down to her hips.

Liz lifted her hips slightly, inviting him to take her already. She felt him jump back just a bit, at her torture. He smiled, giving her a face that told her he would give in. “Alright, alright...” He tenderly led himself inside of her, watching her face contort in pleasure finally.

“Ahhh...” Her moan was soft and slow, finally feeling complete. She lifted up for him to move faster, but Max held her hips in place with his hands, wanting to take his time.

“Baby, wait...we have all night.” Liz let out a breath, and laid back, allowing him to pleasure her. He kissed the tops of her breasts, before moving lower, still inside her. He managed to get to a position where he could lave his tongue over her areolas, making her cry out. He loved hearing her voice while he was making love to her.

“Oh, Max, god!” He pumped into her quickly, then stopped to suckle on her throat, ready to leave his mark when Liz stopped him. “Max, no!”

“What?” he asked, wounded.

“The hickeys, Max. I get in trouble for them.” Max frowned. “So, put them somewhere no one can see them.” She grinned when his smile came back full force and he moved down lower, to an area that wouldn’t be seen in her uniform, and marked her with his mouth.

The pace eventually grew faster, neither one of them able to hold themselves back from finishing this. Their muscles ached as they moved with each other expertly. When that blinding white light shown behind both their eyes, they cried out each other’s name in synchronicity. When they collapsed together, they just laid there, listening to the sounds of their beating hearts. Max finally, helped himself and Liz into the warmth of the sleeping bag.

“I love you, Liz.” Max couldn’t help it. He loved telling her that.

“I love you, too, Max. I can’t wait to be Sergeant Evans.” They smiled at each other before falling into a contented sleep.

Max had specified in his contract that he wanted to be stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado, and once he and Liz were married, he planned to get the MACP (Married Army Couples Program) so that wherever one of them went, the other one would follow, and they would continue to be together. And now, as this beautiful double-ring ceremony was about to take place, Liz stood in the bride’s room of the church, reflecting on everything that had led her to this moment. When her eyes filled up with tears, Diane came up behind her, in her own beautiful wedding gown, squeezing her shoulders gently. “Are you ready?”

Liz looked up at her soon-to-be-mother-in-law with a huge smile on her face. “You bet your ass.”
