The wind stung bitterly at his wet cheeks as he stared down at the casket before him. How had this happened he asked himself as he wiped the tears away. In front of him his life lay cold and unmoving, and even with all his powers there was nothing he could do. His eyes shifted to the headstone at the head of the open grave. The letters on it blurred from his watery eyes yet he continued to watch it, as if something would happen, perchance a change, any change. He blinked the tears free again and his vision cleared as there on the tomb stone read clearly.

He turned his gaze to the floor, unable to watch anything other. It couldn’t be true. His thoughts shifted to that day, the day his life ended.

He snuck quick glances at her as they flew down the back road, her hair tumbling in the wind making her even more beautiful to him then ever before. Perhaps he should have kept his eyes on the road maybe it could have changed something but he didn’t. Their eyes locked for a brief second, out of no where a blur of fur jumped in front of the jeep causing him to swerve.

The sound of metal scraping ground flowed around him as the old Jeep tumbled off the road. Breaking glass louder than everything, deafening. Next he knew he was opening his eyes, a blinding pain in his head, a warm liquid flowing down his face…blood. Had they crashed? He wasn’t sure at the moment as he looked around the remains of his vehicle. Thank god for seat belts he thought, the only thing that saved him from death he was sure.

His eyes fell upon her, curled up in the passenger side, still and unmoving. He rushed to her clear what he would do. As he lifted her head he saw no sign of movement. Blood covered her face, apparent to him that her face had hit the dashboard.

“Liz…Liz wake up…please wake up Liz.” He tapped her on the cheeks hopefully but received nothing. Instinct took over, he placed his hand on her bloody head and concentrated. A blinding pain formed in his head again. He tried again to the same result. He couldn’t heal her, he tried desperately to no avail. He sank back into his spot and allowed unconsciousness to overtake him, the last thing on his mind. He had failed her, the only woman he ever loved and he failed her.

Maria’s voice rang out knocking him from his memories. His eyes focused on the casket which was now being lowered into its final resting place. He listened to Maria sing as he watched the love of his life leave him forever. He stood there for what seemed hours but he didn’t care because it didn’t matter, nothing mattered anymore. A hand on his shoulder roused him slightly but he kept his eyes on the now covered grave. His father led him to the car and helped him into the back seat carefully. Max looked back one last time and then laid back and let the tears flow.

Music flowed around him as he lay on his bed, eyes staring at the ceiling. The day was not a good one for Max or anybody he knew for that matter. A knock at his door roused his senses but he only turned the volume on the radio higher. He didn’t want to talk to anybody, he just wanted to be alone. His family had been worried about him but he was oblivious. Everything that mattered to him was lost. He sat quietly and listened to the music.
