“Why do you always leave right away after we… you know… after…” Her voice trailed off as the look on her face went from satisfaction to a slight blush. She felt his cool lips in response, kissing their way up the sensitive skin of her torso. They quickly worked their magic, and once again she was smiling pleasantly. She flinched as they reached one of her ticklish spots, giving away her vulnerability. But before he could take advantage of her weakness, she brushed him aside and repositioned herself on the bed. She was, after all, Isabel Evans, and she couldn’t be bothered with anything so childish.

“I’m always here for you when you need me,” Alex replied. The words came out so perfectly, he didn’t bother to try to remember if they were true. Isabel didn’t seem to question them either. The words seemed to calm her even more as she relaxed into his embrace.

“No. I’ve had enough… for now” she said as he offered another passionate kiss. “Besides, Jesse’s due home any at time, and I need to get ready for tonight.”

‘Ah yes… Jesse,’ thought Alex. ‘He could be a problem.’

This wasn’t the first time Jesse had been a problem to him. How long had it been now? It seemed to Alex like it had just been yesterday when Isabel closed herself off to him, marrying in haste the first guy that came along. He wasn’t jealous, how could he be? The girl he had always been crazy about had done something rash because of him. Besides, things were so much different now. Death tends to change your outlook on, well… life.

“Lu-cy… I’m ho-ome!!” Jesse said, as he sprang in the front door trying to do his best impression of Ricky Ricardo.

But Isabel had already sensed his impending arrival, and had sprinted into the bathroom just in time, and locked the door.

“Getting a shower.” She called out as he tried the door knob.

“What were you doing sleeping in the middle of the day?” He asked, frustrated, looking at the unmade bed.

“You know it’s my brother’s graduation tonight. I need to look all fresh and happy for him and my friends. That’s not an easy task,” she added, “especially with all that’s been going on lately.”

Jesse sank down in the nearest chair. Yes, much had been going on lately, but none of it had gotten him the results he had been hoping for, for so long. He had understood going into this relationship that the woman he was marrying was somewhat closed off to him. ‘God, but she’s so HOT,’ he would always think to himself, justifying his feelings.

Finding out she was from another planet!! … Well, it’s just not what most guys fear their wives are hiding as their little dark secret! But they had made it through that one ok, or so he had thought. He had taken the news quite well, considering.

So, why have things between them changed? Didn’t he prove himself by committing a felony for her? He had always hoped for something like that to help bring them together. “If I didn’t know any better, it sure seems like she only liked me when she could keep me at a distance,” he said to himself.

Alex sat looking at Jesse from across the room. Jesse was a threat to him, he knew. A threat to his very existence. He felt no anger or jealousy towards the man, just a cool, rational knowledge that the man sitting opposite him was an obstacle that had to be removed.

“I thought you said you were just getting a shower,” Jesse protested, standing to his feet. From inside the bathroom came the unmistakable sound of a bathtub filling up.

“I changed my mind.” “My pores need a good soaking.”

“You know, fine then!” Said Jesse rather frustrated. “I have some papers that need attention back at the office. I’ll just meet you there at the graduation.”

“Suit yourself...” she sang back, as she heard his footfalls exit the house. She was pleased with herself as she sank deeply into the warm water. Solitude was what she wanted right now. Well… maybe not complete solitude…

“Are you still here?” she asked.

“Of course I am,” said an Alex who knew somehow that he had serious work to do. Things were already going quite well, so well he was daring to hope…

“Good, I thought maybe you were going to leave me… again,” she said, feeling relieved that this time, finally, she was quite sure that Alex wasn’t just a figment of her imagination. As for the other times over the last week or two, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

“I didn’t leave you, you pushed me away.”

Alex immediately questioned the wisdom of having said this. It was true, of course. But right now truth that hurts could cost him.

“Your right,” she laughed, “I did push you away.” She dunked her head under the water for a few seconds. Unaccustomed to telepathic communication, she resurfaced to say, “I always push you away… that’s what I do…” her voice trailing off at the end.

Alex wondered at the mature, new woman before him. How long had he been asleep? Where had he been while she was growing up to be this woman? He remembered suddenly how easy it is to access information in his present state, as the answer just popped into his head almost immediately. She had been married to Jesse for over 6 months now. This explains her comfort with what had transpired earlier… what had awoken him from his long sleep of nothingness… where he had obtained this newfound energy that was now flowing through his veins and giving him life.

He remembered too, how he had found the energy before to be there for his other friends who were missing him and trying to solve the riddle of his sudden death. There seemed to be no shortage of it then. But, as everyone moved on with their lives, things seemed to start moving faster on the physical plane. Then even Isabel tried to forget him as she threw herself at…

‘What’s this?’ A thought had suddenly come to him. Something’s happened to Tess, the one responsible for my death? Accessing the Akashic records, the information highway of the Universe, was much easier from his present state than his days of surfing the net ever were. He had learned to enjoy this feature of the afterlife from the moment he’d first arrived. But for some reason the answer to this particular question was guarded by what seemed to be a firewall.

“Why do you want to know?” the Gatekeeper asked.

“I’m not angry with her. I mean no ill will. She did used to be a friend, after all.” He tried to answer truthfully, and not to hold anything against her inside, yet he knew he couldn’t let go completely. At least not right now.

“Ok,” said the Gatekeeper, sensing Alex’s attempt at forgiveness. Immediately he learned that Tess had come back to Earth, sacrificing herself for the royal heir. The Antarian Royal House had their own privileges in the afterlife, being held in high esteem by enough enlightened or semi-enlightened beings to be protected by them. Her final sacrifice had earned her a place with them. How they were treating her though, was information he wasn’t privy to. His mixed feelings toward her blocked him from knowing anything more.

“I won’t push you away again.” Isabel said “All I’ve ever accomplished by doing so was to injure myself.”

Once again Alex marveled at the woman his girlfriend had become. He had totally lost himself in his own thoughts, forgetting about the very important job before him. But what job was that? The one where he must convince her never to let go of him again, so that he can live off of the sexual energy she offers him? Yet here she was, deciding to do so all on her own.

Alex never was much of a fighter, especially when it came to his own needs. And for him to have to manipulate the one person he had always loved and admired…would have been too much for him. Though he loved his existence, he would gladly have gone back into the nothingness if that were what she wanted.

Later that night she made her choice final, and it was Alex at her side in the van when the aliens and their closest friends pulled out of Roswell, New Mexico to make their future elsewhere.

Ed, Lisa, Trude, LovinGuerin, Pooh, and 504

You are all too kind! I'm glad you appreciated it.

This is the first fan-fic I've ever written. It just sort of came to me. After being stuck in my head for a couple of weeks, I decided I'd better write it down! It did take that long though for it to develop into something other people might actually enjoy reading... :)

Let me try answering some questions... (you guys are making me analyze it again. I thought I was done with that once I posted! lol)

Yes, it's over. It's just a short one-parter. (sorry)

Trude; interesting idea with Isabel's near death experience. To tell you the truth though, I had kind of forgotten about it! Season 3 doesn't get too much air time in my house! lol I really had to pull on some memories to get all the canon facts straight.

In my story, Alex as a ghost was "sleeping" his way through time, haven taken care of the business that kept him in this realm, and being forgotten by those who had loved him. It took Isabel needing him once more to change things.

Ok... it took more than just that. Incubi and succubi according to myth, feed off of the energy offered to them by the living. They use whatever means nessisary to pursuade their human partners to continue the relationship. In Alex's case, it was Isabel's offering of this kind of energy to him that gave him conscienceness once again.

But of course, Alex must be... Alex. Though he somehow knows he needs to do something to insure his relationship with the one giving him energy, he is easily sidetracked into doing what he always loved best -- gathering information.

Isabel is pretty much being herself, too. Yes, the "Ramirez" thing isn't sticking anymore! She is remembering her true love that she lost... (or pushed away). Like most people, she finds it hard to tell the difference between imagination and real contact with a spirit. Hence the opening line...

In the end, it all works out. If I was to create my own ending... I don't think I would have gone the same direction the original writter did. But, working with what they gave us... Max and Michael get a single, unattatched Isabel (why they were always pushing for that when they each had a girlfriend  ) anyway, you know Isabel... has to make them happy. -- I just wanted to give her Alex for the ride...

Special thanks also to my beta, Mt Gazer. I owe all my knowledge of fan-fic, especially Roswellian, to my lovely wife. Thankyou Rhonda!
