Family Lies (AU,M/L,UC,ADULT) Ch. 12- -02/28/06[WIP]

Post by RebeccaBehrEvans »

Title: Family Lies

Disclaimer: For the third time, no I don't own anything Roswell related  though I wish I did! (except maybe some tapes and tons and tons of pictures of Max and Liz  )… However, the idea of this story is inspired by a French TV show, but there is absolutely no infringement intended on my part.

Category: M/L to begin with, maybe some UC later. Also AU fic, with no aliens.

Rating: MATURE or ADULT for some contents I guess :-?

Summary: Max. Liz. Love at first sight. Perfect and happy romance... until an awful secret hidden for a long, long time is revealed and changes their lives drastically. Will they go through this or will this ordeal definitely tear them apart? … I guess that's pretty much it!

AN: I didn't really wanted to start a new fic when I hadn't even finished the two others I started, but some people told me that the idea could be good and I shouldn't keep it to myself  , so here I am again. It won't be a long fic though but it will definitely be quite different from what I did until now so I hope you will like it nonetheless.

Some situations may shock some of you, but believe me there is a reason for everything so keep that in mind and everything will be alright, okay?

There shouldn't be any Isabel in this fic, at least not before a long time, but Alex and Kyle could be there, not sure yet. Tess will show up sometime later  and as for Michael, he's Max's brother in this story.

Of course feedbacks are a must, whether they are good or not, so send them my way  … Thank U anyway for all those who will give this a try

This fic is dedicated to all the French Roswellians around here, to Angie, my own and personal banner-maker  who's really the best when it comes to know what I'll like, thank YOU so much  … and to Alex, the little wonder of the family who's 4 months old already… god, time passes so fast! Hope some day you'll be proud of your auntie! Love you lil'one.

Prologue

Liz ran as fast as she could, not even noticing the rain that was again pouring from above, soaking her more and more with each step away she took.

She ignored the burning sensation in her lungs. She ignored the growing pain in her legs. But most of all, she ignored his desperate voice begging her to stop. Begging her to wait for him.

She couldn't. Even if she knew she would certainly regret it afterwards, just now she just couldn't stop and face him. She wanted to get out of here. No she needed to get out of here. Put as much distance between her and this place and mostly between her and him.

She needed to go somewhere where she could cry and break down without having him witnessing it or trying to tell her that everything would be alright. Because for the first time in her life, for the first time since she had met him, she knew that Maxwell Evans wouldn't be able to make this right. No, even with the best will in the world, Max would never be able to fix this mess and change the fact that they couldn't be together. Ever.

How could her life have changed so much in such a short time, in a matter of hours even? she wondered for the thousandth time since hearing the news.

Yesterday everything was fine.

Yesterday she was the happiest girl in the world, loved by and in love with the most amazing man this Earth could bear and today everything was over.

Today she was told that she couldn't be with him anymore, that their love had been doomed from the start, forbidden by some mistakes other persons had committed so long ago and that had nothing to do with them. But in the end, they were going to be the only ones to have to suffer the consequences of those acts now. They were the ones whose lives and hopes had been shattered and destroyed with one single sentence, with one simple word in fact.

A loud sob escaped her mouth as she recalled the earlier events and she stumbled forward, catching herself at the last moment before falling but ruining her cocktail dress in the process. She didn't even look at the damage, knowing that she had to have opened the side slit much more than it originally was, but stopped nonetheless just long enough to search around her, looking for anything familiar.

She hadn't really paid any attention to her surroundings when they had entered the Evans's Estate in the limousine, wanting to enjoy the warmth of Max's embrace for just a few more minutes since she had known that they would have to keep some respectful distance once inside and not be all over each other like they used to, and as a result she felt like she was only turning around in the vast park now, unable to remember where they had come from.

She hadn't even looked where she was going when she had left the reception, too eager she was to be out of there and not see their faces any longer. She had not bothered to follow the main road either but instead had passed through the trees, hoping that they would hide her long enough to make it out.

But now she was lost. Lost, with Max still behind her, slowly but surely closing the distance between them, his pace definitely faster, when she could already feel her strength failing her gradually.

Soon he would be on her and she knew him enough to know that he wouldn't let her leave like that. Soon he would be there trying to convince her that every problem has a solution and that this one wouldn't be any different.

How wrong he would be for once!

Seeing some light on her right she turned off abruptly, treading on her long dress again and tearing it up some more and sure that she would fall for good the next time, she quickly gathered the torn and wet material in her hands and resumed her run, hoping that she would soon find the main entrance and leave this place forever.

After moving a few feet in that direction, she realized that she could indeed clearly see the little guards' cabin they had stopped at when they had arrived and she released a relieved breath. She was almost there. She would do it, she could do it.

But her reprieve was short-lived since no sooner had she thought that, that she heard him again and more clearly now.

"Liz… Liz, please… stop!" Max tried again though he had been yelling after her almost ever since she exited the house and started running with him in tow. But so far all his attempts had resulted to be totally unsuccessful and once more he cursed himself for having wasted some precious minutes and not having followed her as soon as she had left.

She kept running and running and Max was too afraid he would lose her if he let her leave him now to even consider that she might just need some time before being able to talk to him. "Liz… wait please!"

"Open the gate… open the gate please!" Liz immediately yelled once she reached the cabin, frantically knocking on the window and startling the guard that hadn't seen her coming.

He looked confused at the young girl who had obviously emerged from the large grove on his left, wondering what she could be doing outside with the storm that was growing more and more menacing and why she looked so scared and eager to leave, until he saw Mr. Evans not so far behind her, looking just as disheveled as she did.

He quickly considered doing as he was asked, thinking that there was something wrong in this picture, when he heard his boss's son ordering him otherwise.

"LUCAS DON'T!… DON'T OPEN!" Max shouted, dreading what would happen if he didn't obey and Liz was able to exit the property. Would he see her again? Or would she just disappear from his life forever, leaving him utterly miserable for the rest of his existence?

"Please… you have to open that door, NOW!" seeing there her last chance to escape from Max, Liz insisted at the same time that she threw almost terrified looks behind her shoulder.

Lucas briefly wondered again what the hell was happening here and why young Mr. Evans would be chasing a woman who obviously didn't want to have anything to do with him, but in the end he knew better than to mess with him. Whatever this was, it was none of his business. But just for his own peace of mind he would still observe them and make sure that nothing happened to her and that he wouldn't hurt her.

"I'm sorry…" he mumbled, regretting not being able to help her at the moment.

"NO!… NO!… PLEASE… You don't understand… I have to get out! PLEASE!" he then heard the brunette's tortured voice and that was nearly enough to make him cave.

However before he could act the young man was already behind her and he instinctively sat up when he saw the woman immediately moving away from him like she was really afraid of him.

He considered calling Philip Evans or even the police but one look at the now distraught face of one usually always in control Maxwell Evans and the tenderness with which he was looking at her despite the situation, was enough to appease any doubts he could have had: whatever the reasons she was running away from him were, he would certainly never harm her. This had to be some lovers' argument that they just had to solve together.

He saw the apologetic but definitely relieved look Maxwell gave him and he decided to resume his previous activities and act as if he couldn't see them or hear them to give them the privacy they certainly needed for that.

"Liz!" Max expelled, trying first to catch his breath. He then instinctively reached for her arm to turn her to him but before he could even utter a single word she yanked it off like the simple touch had burnt her delicate skin.

"Don't… d-don't touch me please!" she painfully said and taking a few more steps away, she found herself directly in front of the huge iron bars, griping them so hard that her knuckles were turning white, desperately pleading with both of them again. "Open the gate please…"

"Liz…" Max breathed, following her nonetheless but hurt beyond belief by her rejection.

The logical part of his brain of course knew that it was certainly only a defensive reaction and not real repulsion, but it didn't lessen the blow for all that.

"Tell me it's not true Max!…" Liz finally asked when she realized that they weren't going to comply, but so softly that Max wasn't sure he had really heard her speak.

Her back was to him, her head hanging down dejectedly and though he was literally dying to just touch her, he somehow managed to curb that urge not wanting to see a repeat of her previous response to him.

"Baby… I… " he stammered helplessly not knowing what to tell her. He himself had no good answer to offer her. Though he hoped with all his might that what they had just been told was not true he didn't know for sure.

"Tell me it's all… a-all just a lie… or… or some big mis-misunderstanding… please Max!" she continued before turning to him and looking at him, a frightening and pleading look in her usually so expressive eyes.

Max gulped and felt the air rushing out of him all at once, leaving him totally speechless in front of her so obvious distress as much as her appearance.

Her dress, almost transparent now, was clinging to her, revealing to him the soft curves of those breasts and hips he had learned to love so much, the light curls that she had added to her normally straight and silky hair were long gone, washed away by the pouring rain, her usually flawless face was marred with the evident proof of her crying, but strangely Max had never found her more beautiful than at this moment and the sight made his heart ache painfully.

Looking at her now he couldn't help remembering his thoughts when he had first seen her this evening when he had come to take her here. How she had literally taken his breath away in that ivory dress that had hung her forms so perfectly, how proud he had felt or how lucky he had thought he was that this beauty could actually love him when he was so sure he didn't deserve such a wonderful woman.

God, how was it possible for them to have reached this point now? How? And WHY?

"TELL ME MAX!" Liz suddenly yelled at the top of her lungs when he didn't answer, before leaning forwards hands on her stomach and breaking in a painful sob. "Tell me… tell me… tell me please…"

"L-Liz… I… you have to calm down love!" Max pleaded with her, hating to see her so upset and vulnerable but unable to find anything that would really help her.

Not an hour ago he could have just taken her in his arms and he would have brought her all the comfort he could offer her, but now she didn't even seem to be able to stand the sight of him and it made him feel utterly helpless and useless.

"C-Calm down?… how am I supposed to calm down when my life is falling apart! And… god, are you calm Max? Can you be calm after that?" she inquired between tears and hiccups.

Calming down was the furthest thing from her mind.

She wanted her life back. She wanted to wake up in her bed, in his arms and find out that all of this had been nothing but a horrible and twisted dream. She wanted what she had just lost, though somehow she was sure she wouldn't have it ever again.

"Of course not, but Liz…" he started, but was instantly stopped by her broken voice.

"God, it can't be true… it can't… it would… it would mean that… that… oh god, oh god…" she said, starting to pace in front of him and shaking her head back and forth like she was having a silent conversation in her head to which she couldn't find any satisfying conclusion.

"Liz… please, come back with me inside sweetheart… you-you're going to catch something and…" he demanded, seeing her trembling more and more with each second they spent there, but couldn't finish his sentence.

"I don't care… I'm not going back there… I'm not going anywhere with you… and I-I don't care anymore… I don't care!" she started to repeat stubbornly over and over.

Why would she care about a cold, or even a pneumonia or whatever else she could catch tonight when her heart had just been crushed, broken, shattered into a million of tiny, little pieces. Surely nothing could be worse or hurt more than that.

"But I do! Liz, baby, please… we-we need to talk about this, and we'll go wherever you want if you don't want to go back but… you can't stay outside!" he proposed, trying to raise his voice above the sudden clap of thunder.

"No… no… God, Maaax… " she cried before clamping her hand over her mouth and starting to sob again. "It hurts… it hurts so much!" she then moaned tremulously, breaking Max's heart a little more with each word she said. God, they held so much pain.

Pain that would certainly be reflected tenfold in his own words if he just stopped long enough to really think about the situation. But Max just couldn't do that. If he did, the awful truth would hit him square in the face and he wouldn't be able to deny it, just like he wouldn't be able to deny then that he and Liz had absolutely no future, and that was something that was really not conceivable at the moment.

Liz meant everything to him and picturing a life where she could have no part in, at least not the one he wanted her to, was just unbearable and the last thing he could think about now.

So instead he did the only thing he could, the only logical thing: he pushed aside all those negative thoughts that were threatening to drive him crazy and he tried to concentrate on her and only her, like he always did when something went wrong. She was his life and he would do anything for her and god, how he needed her.

The only problem was, was he really the one she needed right now? And would she let him help her anyway? He couldn't say, but he would be damned if he didn't at least try and just gave up without a fight.

"It hurts!" she moaned again, suddenly wrapping her arms around herself and clutching at her sides like she was going to be physically sick.

Unconsciously she took a step towards him before staggering backwards again, needing his comfort more than anything else at the moment but knowing she couldn't seek it in his arms anymore.

Max caught the movement however, and despite her obvious reconsideration, he saw that as a sign and took a tentative step in her direction, closing the distance between the two of them some more.

"I know baby, believe me I know!" he whispered trying to still contain his own emotion but failing miserably. Of course, he also knew how much it hurt and he would give anything just to be able to take her pain, too, even if it would mean doubling his own, he would even welcome it provided that she wouldn't have to suffer at all, but he couldn't.

"How could they do this to me… how could you… I…" Liz accused incoherently, needing to find someone to blame for all this mess.

"I didn't know either, Liz… I-I didn't know… but I promise you… I… we'll figure this out!… Everything will be alright, Liz!" Max swore, needing to hear the words too, even if it was just to convince himself as much as her that they would go through this.

"Max… you are so… so naïve… this can't be figured out… and it's not alright… it won't ever be alright again… it's-it's over… don't you see it?" Liz half-laughed, half-sobbed while she resumed her nervous pacing.

She started running her hands through her hair shakily, gripping it like she was going to pull it out and then let escape a frustrated cry.

Stepping even closer Max took off his tux jacket to protect her as much as he could, sure now that she wouldn't go anywhere with him, at least not any time soon.

"B-Baby come here… come here, please!" he tried, his voice just above a whisper not wanting to scare her away. Once near enough then, he wrapped the jacket around her shivering form and pulled her to his body.

"No… no, Max let me go… god, I hate him… I hate him and I… I… I hate you!" she cried, all of a sudden pummeling his chest with her tiny fists and with all the strength she could muster at the moment.

Deep inside her she knew that none of this was Max's fault and that he was certainly in just as much pain than she was, but turning her anger to him was the only way she could find at the moment to express and deal with her own pain.

Maybe if she could convince herself that she could hate him, she would forget that she loved him too much to bear the thought of losing him and facing a life without him.

"Liz, stop please… stop baby, you're going to hurt yourself!" Max said without even wincing under her blows. Physical pain was nothing compared to the inner turmoil he was enduring right then.

"Let me go… let me go… M-MAX… I hate you… I HATE YOU!" she reiterated more forcefully and continued to struggle when he obstinately refused to let her leave his arms.

As far as Max was concerned she could beat him to death if she wanted, not that it could really happen anyway, but he would not release her until she would really calm down and talk to him.

"That's not true and you know it… you know you don't mean that!" he murmured into her ear, tightening his grip on her and hoping she would finally stop.

God, he hated this. He hated that she was fighting him so much when he was almost sure that, deep down, she had to need him just as much as he needed her right now.

"It's true… I hate you both… I hate you both so much!" she insisted though even to her own ears, her voice was lacking conviction now.

"That's too bad because I love you!" Max declared softly and meaning the words more than ever before, even if that was certainly the last thing she needed to hear at this moment. But how could he lie to her or not say it when he knew it could be the last time he would be able to declare his love to her?

"Don't say that Max… please don't say that… don't say it!" she pleaded, shaking her head but unconsciously wrapping her arms around his waist now and bringing him closer.

"Why not?… you know I mean it… Liz… they can say what they want, it won't change that… It won't change what I feel for you… I could never not love you Liz!" he vowed sincerely, knowing that they would have to rip his heart off his chest before this could happen.

"It's not fair… it's so not fair…" Liz lamented and angrily fisted her hands on his shirt just as she said the words.

"I know love… I'm sorry…"

"Why Max… why?… why?" she then cried, her voice coming muffled since her head was now tucked under his chin.

The involuntary brush of her lips on his chest instantly wreaked havoc on Max's senses and he had to close his eyes and inhale deeply to reign on his raged emotions.

God, how would he live without being able to be with her like this, without holding her whenever he would feel the need or without seeing her ever again or every time he would want to? It just seemed impossible.

"Shh, shh… look at me… look at me baby!" Max asked her before tucking her wet hair behind her ears and cradling her face in his hands to make eye contact with her. "We'll go through this together… whether it's true or not… and I'm sure it's not… it's… there has to be an explanation for this… but whatever it is, we are together okay!"

"Max… I can't do this… I can't… it hurts too much… if-if it's true… what… what are we gonna do? … I don't think I can do it…" Liz croaked in response and buried her face in his chest again, trembling with renewed tears.

"Shh… shh… don't cry… don't cry love, please!" Max tried to soothe gently while stroking her hair and her back.

"Why now Max?… everything was so… so perfect… why did it have to happen now?" she asked him brokenly even though she wasn't really waiting for any kind of answer.

"I don't know sweetheart… I wish I did, but I-I don’t know!" he replied, feeling like a total idiot for telling her the same lame thing over and over again.

'I don't know'… what kind of answer was that?

But what was he supposed to say?

He didn't know why this night that was supposed to be memorable to both of them had turned into the worst nightmare one could imagine. He didn't know why such a secret had been revealed only today when they should have been informed a long time ago. And he didn't know why this was happening now, and even less why it was happening to Liz, when in Max's eyes she was the person that certainly less deserved to be hurt like that or in any other way.

Liz turned watery eyes up to him and Max felt his heart constricting and his breath getting caught in his throat at the sight.

How many times had he gotten lost in those big brown eyes of hers thinking that he could spend the rest of his life looking at her, drinking her in, and now he wasn't even sure he would see tomorrow with her.

"I love you so much, Liz!" he breathed achingly, wiping her tears away with his thumbs before bringing his lips to hers for a soft kiss.

"M-Max… It's-it's wrong… I-I can't…" Liz stuttered, taking a small step away. But she couldn't go far, Max cupping her face in both his hands again as soon as he felt her pulling away.

"It can't be wrong, Liz… I mean… God, how can it be wrong when it feels so right?… Nothing… nothing has ever felt more right to me than loving you… holding you… being with you! And I won't let them… I won't let him destroy that… see, see… I-I'm sure there has to be some kind of explanation… because I know we are meant to be Liz… I've always known that… from the very first time I laid my eyes on you, I just knew we were meant to be!… And I know you felt it, too!" he declared fervently having finally lost all battle against those angry tears that had been shimmering in his eyes ever since she had flown away from the house.

"I don't know… I don't know anymore!" Liz cried and sobbed uncontrollably not having the strength to fight anymore.

She fell forward, directly into Max's opened and comforting arms and grabbed hold of him like her life depended on it. And right then she was sure that it did. That she would just die if he ever let go of her again. She felt so empty inside, the pain increasing even more and overwhelming all of her senses.

In the end, unable to hold on any longer, she felt her knees giving up under her and Max had no other choice but to lower them both to the ground, tenderly gathering her on his lap, holding her tightly and kissing the top of her head from time to time, as she cried her heart out on his shoulder and he followed suit, finally letting his own tears run completely free.

"Shh, I'm here… I'm here baby, I'll never let you down… we'll go through this… I promise… whatever it takes… I'm not gonna let you down! I'm not giving up on you Liz!… I'm sure we'll go through this…" he repeated over and over again, hoping that if he said the words often enough they would somehow become true.

And for a long, long time they remained just like that, desperately clinging to each other and seeking some warmth and improbable relief in the other's arms, oblivious to the rain that had yet to stop or to the two figures watching them in the distance, aching themselves for the two broken-hearted whose only crime in life had been to fall crazily and irremediably in love with the only one they unfortunately had no right to.

End of the prologue

 … so, uh… that was the first part… now you tell me if it's worth continuing, okay?

Chapter 1

Five months earlier. December 14th

"I said no! NO…N-O… even for you it can't be that hard to understand such a simple word!" Maxwell Evans repeated for the umpteenth time this day, wondering why Michael couldn't just drop the matter once and for all.

Ever since he had arrived half an hour earlier, his stubborn brother had been trying to convince him that a good night of 'fiesta' like he said, was exactly what he needed, when he absolutely didn't want to go anywhere tonight.

Michael's fiestas were always the same anyway. People got there. People got drunk. People got sick. And he was the stupid idiot that had to pass behind to clean their mess because Michael was too wasted himself to be the one to take care of that, even if it was actually his house they were at.

Thank you, but no thank you. That wasn't exactly his idea of fun for a Saturday night. He would rather order some pizzas, rent out some good old movie and spend it eating and drinking in front of the TV.

"About just as hard it's for you to understand I want you there obviously… " Michael retorted, not the least fazed by his brother's refusal.

"Michael… I just don't feel like going out tonight, okay… can't you respect that?" Max demanded. God he could really not understand why his brother wanted him to go so much. It wasn't as if he really needed him there anyway.

"Nope… not if it means that you're going to miss the biggest fiiiiesta that's gonna be thrown in the whole country!" Michael replied excitedly. Yeah, this party was going to be the bomb.

"You know big bro, you really need to work on that modesty of yours… your parties are not that great…" Max informed him as seriously as he could, knowing how much Michael prided himself on being able to throw parties everyone wanted to attend to in LA. At least that what he said.

"Are you kidding me? Of course they are… there are always the best music… the best hot chicks… booze… food, … and... hot chicks, did I say it already?… what more could you ask for ?" Michael answered like that was the most important or impressive thing.

"Hmm… hot chicks with an IQ higher than 10 maybe?... that would really be a first… but I guess I'm deluding myself here, right?… after all you're the one inviting!" Max remarked with a touch of sarcasm.

He had had enough experiences with the brainless bimbos that always showed up at Michael's parties and that for some strange reasons always seemed to gravitate around him, to last him a life time.

"Ouch bro… I resent that! Really… but anyway… what if I promise that this time it won't be like that and that I can find you someone who's gonna be able to tell you more than 'Hi my name is Bambi… what's my name?…uh? I mean your name? Hihihi!' " Michael mocked in response, remembering that girl who had accosted Max during one of his famous parties over a month ago, traumatizing him to the point that he had left yelling at him that he was out of there and wouldn't set foot to any of his parties again from now on.

"Well, then I'd say that either you've grown some brain yourself… which I doubt, or… Maria is the one organizing this one. " Max answered matter-of-factly, trying as much as he could to hide a smile.

"Damn man…am I that obvious?" Michael said, feigning to have been caught.

"Pretty much yeah… but my answer is still no!"

A party organized by Michael's girlfriend, Maria Deluca, had certainly to be even worse than one organized by his brother himself if that was possible. At least for him.

He loved Maria, really he did, but besides the fact that she could babble non-stop and Max was sure he would someday pop a vein while listening to one of her hysterical ramble, she had also made hers the mission of hooking Max up with about any girl she thought he could like, and that was definitely too much for him. He couldn't even remember how many lame excuses he had to have given her already to not go along with her matchmaking plans.

If it were for Maria he certainly would have been married to twenty different girls already, and he had known her for what? A year and a half maybe?

It had been like that each and every time he had visited for this last year and gotten even worse since he had come back for good in July.

No, there was only so much a man could take and concerning Maria and her intentions regarding him, Max had already had enough.

As things were, he was sure that telling her he was gay was the only way to have her finally giving up for good. But then knowing her, she would certainly do the exact same thing but with the male population of Los Angeles, so maybe it wasn't the best idea after all.

"Seriously Max… you really need to get out of this house… when was the last time you had some real fun?" Michael inquired. However, before Max could answer he was already doing it for him, knowing what his response could only be anyway. He would try to deny it when they both knew he was right. "See that what I thought… I'm not even sure you still know the word!"

"Hey, I know how to have some fun… I just don't need to party or be totally thrashed to have some… not like someone I know!" Max tried to turn the tables, though to be honest it had indeed been long since he had had a real good time.

Law school didn't really give you so much time and opportunities, moreover when you had always been more of a loner than a partier. And then since he had come back, his father had been on his back almost constantly and he hadn't really found time either. Beside spending some time with Michael and Maria, he didn't really get out that much.

"Yeah whatever… then when was the last time you got laid, huh? " Michael continued, wiggling his eyebrows knowing that Max wouldn't like where he was leading this.

"Michael!" Max immediately called warningly and sat up ready to leave the room.

If he had to go through one of Michael's so famous ' Max brother you need to find a girl, screw her brains out for good and become a man finally' again he would just strangle himself with his own hands before the end of his speech.

But like Michael had ever listened to him, huh?

"Oops, oh yeah that's true, you've never gotten laid to begin with… god, I really don't know how you do it… " Michael went on with a long but faked suffering sigh, totally ignoring Max's warning.

In reality he didn't care that much about Max's sex life, or lack of actually, his brother was big enough to know what he wanted to do and what he didn't, but those discussions were always fun to him, and honestly he would lie if he said that he didn't like to make his younger brother squirm a little. Max was definitely a too easy target.

"Michael, I'm not having this conversation with you again!" Max told him seriously moving to go to the kitchen to take another cherry coke. Anything to get out of there.

God, if he hadn't heard this a thousand times already he hadn't heard it at all.

"Fine… I'll definitely drop the delicate subject of your untouchable virgin status if you come tonight. " Michael promised though he was sure he would certainly regret the words afterwards.

"Untouchable virgin status?" Max stopped in his tracks and parroted with a small smile. Man this was getting better and better. Now his virginal status had become untouchable. What would it be next? "Said like that you make it sound like I'm some monk or I don't know what!… which I'm not!"

"Well, that's pretty much the same if you ask me… and it's not my fault if you woke up someday and decided that you'd wait until you'd find the one and marry her first before joining the… world of the livings!" was Michael's next answer which surprised Max to say the least.

"Oh God… the world of the livings, huh?… And that would be?… In Michael Evans's particular perception of things of course!" Max turned back and came to sit down again.

Just because he didn't sleep left and right with everything that had a skirt on did it mean that he felt or was any different from anyone else. And he felt pretty much alive anyway if you asked him.

He had a good job -though if it hadn't been for his father, how could he say?, ' insistent little push' in that direction, it would definitely not have been his first choice of carrier- he was successful, he made good money and he dated whenever he wanted. That had never been a problem for him actually, despite what Michael and everyone else in his family could think, he just had yet to find what, or rather who he was really looking for, and in the meantime, he didn't really feel the need to venture in meaningless relationships or one night stands like Michael often suggested it.

"Well… the world of those who have already had the chance to taste and enjoy the joys and pleasures of a good roll in the sack… of good and hot monkey sex, of course." Michael declared cheerfully and Max had to resist the urge to roll his eyes.

Surely Maria would be pleased to hear Michael talking like that right now. Leave it to his brother to change something that was supposed to be the most intimate and important thing two people could share into something so… vulgar and almost insignificant.

"I don't want to have 'sex' " Max replied like he always did, but since his face was down he didn't notice how this time again Michael was silently mimicking the words he knew by heart now.

How many times had he heard that same sentence during the past last years? It had ended up becoming some kind of motto for Max and each time they had the conversation it would be said at least once.

Max didn't want to have sex. Max wanted to make love, whatever the difference was. Well, not that Michael didn't know, he had discovered the difference himself once he had met Maria -what had started out as only sex like he had had it with so many others before, had definitely turned into something else with her- but what Max wanted was so much more. He wanted the soul mates' kind of love and all that went with it. The only problem was that Michael wasn't sure he would find it. His brother was 25 already, if he followed on with those plans of his, he could end up old, wrinkled and bedridden before he realized it and still a virgin.

Who the hell was still a virgin at 25 anyway, huh? He couldn't even remember when he himself had lost his virginity. When was that, 12... 13 years ago?

Oh man he was getting old himself.

" I know man… I think I already got that the last what?… two million times you said it" Michael finally chuckled light-heartedly realizing that if he kept this up his brother would certainly set his face against it like he always did and then there would be no way he would convince him. And then after a short pause he added: "Look we're not going anywhere with this and I still have too much to do before tonight so what do you say? … I'm counting you in, right?"

"You know you're really stubborn Mike!" Max sighed, ready to cave if that just meant that Michael would finally give up and leave him alone.

"I heard the trait runs in the family!" Michael joked thinking that they wouldn't be still here if his brother wasn't just as stubborn as he was. "Now seriously… if you don't do it for me Max… at least do it for Maria!"

Michael finally decided that if he wanted to succeed he needed to take another road to deal with this. Maria would certainly kill him for doing exactly what she had told him not to, but she didn't need to know about all the details anyway, right? And besides he had already wasted enough time as it was.

" Maria? What does this have to do with Maria?… I mean… why should I go to one of your parties… for Maria?" Max asked confused, wondering what his dear brother had not told him. And suddenly he couldn't help thinking that he had to be missing something here, but for a life of him he couldn't see what. That was until Michael opened his mouth again and he felt like beating him senseless right there, right then.

" Uh… Maybe because it happens to be her 25th birthday party!" Michael said almost inaudibly, bracing himself for what he was sure was coming.

One…

Two…

Three…

Just in time man.

"WHAT?… her… her bir…. Michael, YOU IDIOT!" Max couldn't help yelling. God he knew his brother could be quite dumb sometimes but that was the limit. "It's her birthday? And of course you couldn't start with that, could you?… no!... that would have been waaay too easy!"

"Of course I could… but she didn't want me to…" he answered matter-of-factly not even offended by his brother's insult.

He had known how Max would react if he finally had to tell him, he had just hoped that he wouldn't have to do it, that he could have convinced him otherwise. But obviously he had underestimated his brother's own stubbornness and had been wrong again.

"Why wouldn't she want you to tell me?" Max wondered aloud not understanding what could be the point.

Did she want him to come or not? If she did, she had to know that if it was for her birthday he would have accepted to go anywhere, if he was there of course.

And then Max cursed himself for having forgotten such an important date. Last year he had been invited, too, but hadn't been able to make it, but he should have at least remembered the day. Obviously idiocy also ran in the family and Michael wasn't the only one to have been infected. How could he have been so stupid? Now at least he understood why Michael had been insisting so much. Too bad they already had the cast for the next 'Dumb and Dumber' because they could have applied for the job together and certainly would have won hands down.

"Well… you know how she is… and she knows how you are, too… she knows you don't like to attend this kind of stuff… she didn't want you to feel forced to come… that's all!" Michael tried to explain, though by then he was starting to think that all of this had been a really stupid idea.

"Of course I don't particularly like it… but this is different… I mean it's her birthday… you know I'd have said yes already if you had just begun with that!" Max insisted finding it every time harder to grab those two's logics. They really form quite 'the' couple.

"And I'm telling you again, she was the one to tell me I had to try to convince you without using that argument or giving you this detail. " Michael answered.

"Detail?… Mike, I don't think that Maria Deluca throwing a party for her birthday can be considered as a detail, excuse me!" Max retorted still not believing that they hadn't told him.

"Well… it is for her… she just wants to have some fun with her friends… and now you know, so what's the big deal, bro?" Michael asked him, not understanding why he needed to make such a fuss about that.

"The big deal, bro, is that I don't even have a present for her!… How am I supposed to show up with nothing for her, huh?" Max answered, realizing that if someone had just taken the time to tell him he wouldn't be in this situation now. Where was he supposed to find anything for Maria at this hour now?

"Max man… obviously I was wrong... you still don't know her... Maria is not the present type… she won't care! She just wants you there… she wants you to have some fun for once and forget about your work for one night… that's all!" Michael informed, knowing himself that Maria couldn't care less about a present. As long as Max came and really enjoyed himself, that would be enough to make her happy.

"Michael, I-I don't know…" Max hesitated. It just didn't feel right to go there without a thing.

"Really Max… it won't be a problem believe me!… She asked for people to bring only food and drinks if they really wanted to bring something… so come with a pack of beers or anything if you really want and it'll be fine!" Michael told his brother, hoping that once this little problem was solved he could get be out of here. He knew convincing him would take long but damn he hadn't thought it would take that long.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah!" Michael said with an exaggerated sigh. "So… what do you say?"

"Yeah… yeah, okay… I'm coming… satisfied?" Max finally accepted, much to Michael's relief.

"Dear Lord, thank Him for small favor… I thought I'd have to beg on hands and knees!" Michael joked, relieved beyond belief. Maria owed him, that was for sure.

"Damn… I should have waited some more." Max threw back with a grin.

"Yeah sure!" his brother rolled his eyes and said. " So… I see you tonight… 9 sharp…"

"Yeah… later!" Max sat up and followed Michael to the door.

"Oh and Max?" Michael suddenly turned around before exiting his brother's house.

"Yes?"

" Don't tell Maria I had to tell you… and try to at least 'look' happy once you're there!" Michael asked of him.

"Sure, don't worry… shouldn't be a problem since you're not the only one inviting and organizing finally… but tell her to not try to hook me up with all of her friends there, okay?"

"Will do!" Michael said, his hand reaching for the doorknob.

"Oh and don't forget to keep your promise!" Max reminded him just before he could get out.

"My promise?… what promise?… Did I make any promise today?" Michael immediately faked to not understand what Max was meaning. Damn him and his big mouth.

"You know which one… from now on I don't want to hear the words Max and virginity in the same sentence or anything that comes remotely close to that coming out of this mouth of yours when I'm around… Got it?" Max elucidated, hoping that after today those conversations would be over for good.

Wishful thinking?

Yeah, that was pretty much what he thought, too, but one could hope, right?

"Fine… what wouldn't I do for Maria?… I swear this girl is spoiling all my fun!… Women! " Michael mumbled before finally leaving. "Bye, bro!"

"Bye, Mike." Max replied before closing the door behind him.

Hopefully he wouldn't have to regret his decision to go, he thought as he went up to his room to decide what he was going to wear for the night.

Little did he know that after tonight the only thing he would really regret would be to not have caved sooner and attended those parties he hated so much all the other times.

Category:
M/L to begin with, maybe some UC later. It's a AU fic though, with no aliens.

Rating: MATURE or ADULT for some contents I guess :-?

Chapter two.

Ocean Park Avenue, Santa Monica ~ Michael & Maria's House
2 hrs, 43 minutes before the party.

"Oh my God, Liz!" Maria yelled when after what felt like eternity, she finally saw her best friend emerging from the bathroom. It was about time she thought, she was slowly starting to think something was wrong with her, but girl it was worth the wait. "You look incredible… you're going to knock all the guys off their feet tonight!"

"I don't know 'Ria… I don't really feel at ease in this." Liz answered, self-consciously looking at her reflection in the full-length mirror of Maria 's bedroom.

Actually 'don't feel at ease' didn't even start to cover up for what she really felt.

To say that the black dress and boots she was wearing right now had nothing to do with what she usually wore would be a clear understatement, but this was Maria's birthday and she had insisted to be the one to choose what according to her, would suit Liz better for her party. The only problem was that Maria's tastes when it came to dressing were sometimes, if not often, let's just say, way too much for lack of better words. And this little fashion show had been going on for what seemed like hours already, wearing off Liz's patience a little more each time she had to go in and then out of Maria's bathroom over and over.

"Are you kidding me?… this is just… you, Liz… it screams confidence… it screams power… and it screams… sex!" Maria declared excitedly, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively at the end of her sentence just for good measure.

Okay, technically Liz didn't usually say that much, but for once they could pretend, couldn't they?

"Oh my god… that's it… I'm not wearing this!" Liz exclaimed horrified, marching back to where she had just come from.

The last thing she wanted was to scream sex or anything remotely close for heaven's sake. What was Maria thinking?

Dear Lord, could someone tell her why she was doing this again, and what had possessed her to let Maria Deluca take care of that?

"Why?… you look totally hot, Liz, believe me!" Maria insisted, conveniently oblivious to her best friend's embarrassment.

"Maria, I don't want to go around screaming, 'hey guys, I'm available, come and screw me!'… that's actually the last thing in the world I would want!… and besides, we're in December… I'm gonna freeze in this… and… and… I'm not wearing this, I'm telling you!" Liz interjected with even more vehemence this time.

No way she was going to go anywhere out of this room with a stamp-like dress that would promote the wrong idea. The only reason she was there to begin with was to please Maria of course, but even what you could do for a best friend had some limits.

She didn't always come to Michael and Maria's parties since she didn't exactly share their love and near obsession for that kind of events and even when she did, she didn't stay that long anyway, so it was already something in itself that she had accepted so easily to attend through the entire thing, but though tonight was special for her friend and she had promised to make an effort, this was definitely going too far.

"Fine… but you're no fun!… go and try another outfit then…" Maria agreed rather reluctantly after a short reflection. If Liz didn't feel at ease, she couldn't force her to wear this, but it was really too bad because she would definitively have been a sensation in that dress.

"Okay… be back!" Liz immediately hurried back to the bathroom, too happy to comply and change in more decent clothes, if she could find any of course.

However just when she was going to slip into the next dress Maria had brought from the shop for her, she heard her again and she almost groaned. Could she not just let her breathe for a moment?

"Try the pants now!" Maria yelled through the door, thinking that if Liz didn't want to wear that dress at least she could try to convince her to go for something she would still look incredibly sexy in. And it wasn't as if they still had so much choice anyway, so maybe the only pants she had thought about taking would suit her better.

"With which top then? " Liz asked back, briefly rolling her eyes at the different items.

God, there was so much clothes in there -most of them already tried and quickly rejected- that Liz wondered if Maria had left anything in the shop.

It definitely brought some good perks to have your own fashion store but when you had one Maria Deluca working with you there, that was something else.

Every time one of them had to go somewhere, you could be sure that almost half of it would be found in Maria's bathroom and honestly it was a wonder they still could make profits out of the business with her tendency to choose only the most expensive garments of course. Nothing was too good for them she always claimed. Sure baby, that's because you're not paying for them.

Yes, it was really a chance it was hers, Liz realized again, even if technically it had been her mother's first and she had only inherited it over two years ago, and not Maria's, otherwise they would have both joined the already large list of Los Angeles unemployed people a long time ago.

"The red one with the coordinated shirt… yeah, it will be perfect with the red one!" Maria replied enthusiastically already picturing her friend in it.

The pants and the red top and shirt, Liz repeated inwardly as she started rummaging through the pill of clothes that was currently covering Maria's bathroom countertop. Sure, but where were they?

After picking and pushing aside a few items, she managed to locate them but then she couldn't help making a face when she held what Maria was talking about in her hand and during a few seconds, she even eyed the material suspiciously like she was afraid it would suddenly jump her if she weren't careful enough.

Of course it wasn't half as bad as some of the things she had already tried but this still looked more like something that her friend would wear than something that she would have chosen for herself.

On the other hand, thinking about it, she would most definitely go for this rather than having to wear the skimpy leather skirt that normally went with the upper part of her outfit and that she had yet to try.

So all in all, the pants were certainly a safer choice, she decided with a slight nod of her head. Therefore a few minutes later she was dressed again and ready to meet Maria's critic eye for the umpteenth time. However, her reaction wasn't exactly the one she had been excepting.

"WOW!" was all the usually more than expressive girl could say when she finally saw Liz standing in front of her once more. Talk about a change.

"What?" Liz asked, immediately on the defensive. What was wrong? She had put on exactly what Maria had recommended, right? So what was the problem now?

"Nothing… Liz, you… you're simply stunning." Maria complimented sincerely proud of her good tastes. "Really and totally stunning in fact!" she then added much more cheerfully.

" 'Ria… I'm not sure…" Liz still hesitated, nervously fidgeting with the hem of the top.

Granted she indeed looked great and quite sexy, but if Maria liked it that much finally what did it mean? She had liked every other outfit Liz had tried even the more extravagant or revealing ones so maybe this was still too much for lil' old her after all.

"And knowing you, you're never going to be… so I'll make it easy for you… this is it, trust me!" Maria stated, confident about that choice. Liz had always looked great in red anyway.

"Does that mean that my torture is over?" Liz inquired after looking herself one last time in the mirror and finally admitting to herself that it actually looked quite good on her. And if that meant she was freed after that, all the better.

Maria wasn't completely wrong anyway: if it depended only on her they would never find anything that would really be to her liking in the mountain of clothing that had been Maria's choice, and she would most likely go in low hugger jeans and whatever top she would find without caring that much about what she looked like. She liked to dress, but for herself not to please anyone else and only in what would be the most comfortable for her. Maria was more the fashion victim always wanting to be in, which certainly explained her expensive tastes.

"I guess, yeah!"

"Great… I don’t think I would have been able to go through this much longer." Liz expelled a long relieved sigh at last.

"Okay… so it's set… now about your hair…" Maria started as she moved closer to Liz, her hands already reaching for the dark mane.

"Oh, no, no way Maria… thank you but I think I'm gonna take care of that myself… I know you…" Liz stepped back and immediately raised a halting hand, stopping Maria's ones in mid air.

"Oh, c'mon Liz… you know how much I love to do your hair!" the blonde girl pouted and whined like a little child. That was not fair, the hair was the best part of all the preparation to her.

"That's exactly why I don't want you to come anywhere near it… I'm not willing to stay 3 more hours sitting on a chair while you try a million different things with my hair only to have you say that finally it looked better with the first hairdo…" Liz immediately refused, not leaving any room for discussion. She would never make it out of this house if she let Maria only touch her hair. " Besides, you know that I still have to go back to my house and you still have a few things to do yourself, too, if I remember correctly so… as far as I'm concerned it's enough for today!"

"Oh-kkay… as you want!" Maria relented quite unwillingly as she chanced a quick look at her watch, her eyes nearly popping out of her head when she saw the hour. "Oh, my god, you're right… I didn't realize it was so late… oh, my god… oh, my god… I need to go to my mom's before Michael comes back or he's going to kill me and…" she started to yell hysterically and run around the room to find her shoes only to be stopped by Liz.

"Maria… calm down okay!" she said as she grabbed her friend's shoulders and did her best to not laugh at her antics. She should have bet this afternoon would end this way, she surely could have made some good money. It was always the same with Maria anyway. "Let me change again and we'll both go okay?… you still have time don't worry!"

"Okay, okay… but hurry up!" Maria pressed as she saw her already taking off her shirt.

This time of course Liz changed in record time, and not because Maria was in a hurry but because she was too happy to find herself again in her old washed jeans and her own tight-fitting blouse. As far as she was concerned there was nothing wrong with them, but Maria had thrown her one of her icy glare the instant she had insinuated that this was what she was going to wear for the night, too. Of course it had been a joke but obviously Maria didn't have the same sense of humor when it came to such important and vital matters. Insert sarcasm here.

"What about all those clothes?" Liz pointed behind her and asked as she got out of the bathroom.

"I'll take care of that when I come back … now move… my mom is leaving at 7:30 and I can't miss her!" Maria urged her as they both started to go downstairs.

Unfortunately before they could even reach the last steps, they both heard the door bell announcing that their departure was going to be delayed even more than they thought.

"Oops… looks like we're not going to leave any time soon!" Liz remarked stifling a laugh when she heard Maria groan. That would teach her to spend hours playing Miss Stylist.

"Go answer the door please, while I go and get my purse and keys." Maria requested as she made a mad dash to her kitchen.

Now openly laughing at her friend's craziness, Liz quickly went to open the front door only to find herself in front of a deliverer who held a huge bunch of red roses in his hands.

"Maria Deluca?" he asked as he eyed the brunette girl.

Cute, he thought. No wonder someone was sending her such an expensive present.

"No!…uh… she's kind of… busy right now!" Liz answered distractedly, not able to tear her eyes away from the impressive bunch. Wow, why was she never the lucky girl they were sent to, huh?

"Okay… can you sign for her then?" the man demanded as he extended his orders pad to her.

"Sure if you…" Liz took it and started to reply but was soon interrupted by a more than frantic Maria.

"I'm here, I'm here… oh, my god! Are those for me?" she inquired as soon as she saw the flowers.

Now if she had only taken the time to really think about it, she would surely have realized how stupid her question was of course. It was her house, and somehow Michael, the only other resident there, receiving flowers from anyone didn't really seem like a possibility.

"If you're Maria Deluca, yes… 25 roses for you miss!" he confirmed with a smile.

Man, he had tried, but he had never managed to comprehend how such a simple act could put women in such a state. But maybe he was just biased after seeing it happening almost every day.

"I am! I am!" Maria said excitedly as she quickly signed the delivery order and reached for them. "Who are they from?"

"Look at the card Ria." Liz suggested with a brief roll of her eyes. Leave it to Maria to forget about the simplest things when she was all keyed-up.

"Of course… uh… could you just go and look for a vase, please!… there must be one in the kitchen!" Maria replied as she grabbed the bunch of roses, smelled them and then searched in her purse to give the deliverer a good tip. She then quickly closed the door once he left and was just reaching for the card when Liz came back.

"So, who are they from?" Liz questioned slowly growing quite agitated herself.

Did Maria have a secret admirer? she wondered, almost immediately thinking that the poor man was dead if Michael heard about that.

"I haven't looked yet… but I can already tell you who they are not from!" Maria laughed already knowing that at least they couldn't be from Michael.

Not that he never bought her flowers, he just hated to have to do it for a special occasion or because traditions or rules said so. He preferred to surprise her and save that for when she really didn't expect it which of course suited her just fine. She loved surprises.

With some nervousness she finally pulled the little card from the envelope and smiled as she started reading.

"Hey B-day Girl, 25 huh?

You do realize that 3 more like this one and you'll be a century old already.

Relax, relax, I'm just kidding.
I'm sure you'll still be as lively and beautiful even then.
Hope you like the roses.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIA,
C U later.

With Love,
Maxwell.

P.S: I'm not cleaning anyone's mess tonight,
so watch your man…
or prepare yourself. ;-P
"

"I'm killing him… and then I'll kill my stupid boyfriend!" Maria exclaimed as soon as she finished and knew who had sent them and what that implied. Of course she was ecstatic about the gesture and the roses but it was the rest she wasn't quite pleased with.

"Why?" Liz frowned as she took the card from Maria's hand and proceeded to read it herself, not understanding what could have upset Maria so suddenly.

Of course she didn't take the words the same way her friend did and by the end of her reading she couldn't help giggling.

Either the guy didn't know Maria quite well and her known reluctance to see herself getting old, or he actually knew her so well that he couldn't resist teasing her, sure that he would definitely get a reaction out of her with such a comment.

Wait, Maxwell? Wasn't that Michael's brother?

"I can't believe the guy… does he not know that some things just can't be said to a lady!… and Michael… argh… I specifically told him to not tell his brother it was my birthday… and I don't think he remembered all by himself… so…" Maria started to ramble, cursing her boyfriend for being such an idiot.

Why could he never do what she asked of him, huh? Was it so hard to convince his brother to come without revealing all the reasons why he had to?

"Maria, I kind of think it's funny… and sweet… I mean he thinks that you're going to be just as loooovely when you'll be all old and wrinkled… that's…" Liz tried to defend that Maxwell guy, not even paying attention to the part Michael was apparently playing in the story, too, or the fact that Maria had actually confirmed that they were indeed talking about his brother.

"Okay, stop… of course you'd find that funny… you're certainly as… uh… weird as he is!…" Maria started indignantly before stopping abruptly and looking at Liz with that all too familiar twinkle in her eyes. That look always meant trouble with Maria. "Oh, wait…"

"Oh, no… oh, no Maria…" Liz immediately cut her off as soon as she noticed her offended expression changing to something she definitely didn't want to see again. No way, not this time, she thought all games and smiles forgotten. " I know this look and I told you… I'm only staying if you leave me alone tonight!"

"But Liz… Maxwell is such a sweetheart… you two would be perfect together! I already told you so…... Tonight is the night, Liz… this is the opportunity we have been waiting for!" Maria responded, instantly forgetting about the card or anything else and switching into matchmaking mode again.

"The opportunity you have been looking for… I never asked for it… " Liz pointed out right away. "Besides, if he's such a sweetheart, why can he not find himself a girlfriend?… alone I mean, huh?"

"He-he's a little shy, that's all!" Maria lied.

Max wasn't especially shy in fact, he just wasn't really interested in finding someone and even less interested in her plans actually, or at least he hadn't been until now. But that didn't mean she couldn't try or that she had to listen to him, right?

However, it was apparently the wrong thing to say if Liz's reaction was any indication.

"I don't go for shy guys… you know I prefer guys who really know what they want!" Liz replied quite dryly as she went and searched for her own purse.

When would Maria understand that if or when she wanted to date, she could take care of herself all alone and that she didn't need or want her to interfere in her private life.

"But he knows what he wants believe me! And he just doesn't go out that much, that's why he's still single!" Maria went on, trying to put things right.

She was sure that those two would really hit it off if they just let her help them a little bit. She had always thought so, she just never had the opportunity to prove she was right, but she definitely could feel it: Max and Liz would really be wonderful together.

"Maria, I'm serious, forget it or I'm out of here, you got it?" Liz warned her once more, refusing to hear anything else about the man.

She had no doubt that he had to be a great guy, she had heard so sooo many times already, but that didn't change the fact that every time Maria tried to set her up with someone, it ended up in a disaster.

"Okay, fine, fine… but you're definitely missing something!" Maria faked to understand and accept her decision, when in reality she was already plotting her next move in her head.

The only thing she had to do was to find the right moment to introduce Max to Liz and make it look the more natural possible, and after that she was sure that Liz would quickly revise her opinion.

"Yeah, sure… that's what you told me about almost all the guys you tried to hook me up with and look where it took me!" Liz grabbed her jacket and reminded her, definitively not wanting to see a repeat of her previous experiences with Maria's organized dates.

"But Michael's brother is different!" she protested wishing that Liz would just hear her out on this one.

So yes, her choices of potential boyfriends for Liz hadn't always been the wisest to say the least but she knew she was right about this one.

"Well, then I'll find out by myself… I'm a big girl!" Liz tried to conclude thinking that if it was meant to be, though she honestly doubted it, she would meet him anyway but on her terms and without anyone's intervention.

But obviously Maria wasn't seeing it this way. Why wasn't she surprised, huh?

"Okay… we'll talk about that later!"

"Nope, this discussion is over!"

"Fiiine!" Maria rolled her eyes as she finally pushed her friend out of her house. "Now move that nice butt of yours!"

"I am really serious Maria!" Liz insisted when she saw that the other girl was giving up too easily. That just wasn't like Maria and she wasn't fooled by her sudden submissive act.

"Yeah, yeah… I see you in a few, okay!" Maria said and climbed in her car, even more eager to leave now.

Knowing Liz if she thought that she was trying to change the subject or to not acknowledge how serious she indeed was, she would quickly conclude that she had no intention to drop the matter and therefore she would certainly make her promise to mind her own business for once. And well, Maria had a lot of flaws but she couldn't break a promise, and definitely not a promise to her best friend.

She quickly waved back to Liz as she left and started walking to her own house and pulled off of her driveway herself, hoping that her little plan wouldn't backfire on her this time.

End of chapter two.

It's a AU fic though, with no aliens.

Rating: MATURE or ADULT for some contents I guess :-?

AN: Here I am again!
PuReDrEaMeR05, Roswellluver, Crashdown2006, Gigo, Frenchkiss, Strawberry_Dreamer, Marteloise, Anonymousarfan, VeronicaB, Dreams and Candy, Babylisou(no problem girl  ) Alien614, Ezriboots,... thank U so much for your feedbacks, I really hope that you're going to love the new part too
In fact, this chapter was soo long that I had to split it in two too, so don't worry if you don't have the meeting in chapter 3.a... it's coming in 3.b
For those who were expecting too much from Maria's matchmaking plans, sorry but let's just say, that everything is not going to happen just like she had thought it at that moment... you'll see.
Another thing... more important.. I don't know how you pictured my Max, but just keep in mind that yes, he is indeed a 25yr old virgin, but it is by choice... of course he could have done the deed already and more than once, but it was his choice to not to... therefore, he is absolutely NOT a prude or some guy who doesn't know the first thing about the opposite sex, he is shy too yes, but not that much  ... I'm only telling that because otherwise I think that some of you are going to be really shocked by Max's attitude in the next parts...
Well I guess that's it ... I'll be waiting for your feedbacks then now

Chapter 3.a

Max parked his car in Michael's driveway, almost instantly rolling his eyes when he stepped out of it and realized that even from where he still was, he could clearly distinguish the sound of Metallica blasting right up. If anyone had had any doubts, that was all the proof they needed that they had indeed found the right house. It sounded awfully like Michael was momentarily playing deejay again.
He was more than an hour late, -fashionably late Maria would say-, but obviously not the last he then noticed as he saw people still arriving. Too many people for his liking actually, he groaned as he walked to his trunk and retrieved the few things he had taken. Only food and drinks, just like Michael had recommended it.
Of course he was almost sure to hear something about the roses as soon as he would arrive, but he couldn't help himself. Acting like he didn't know about Maria's birthday after all, had really not felt right and that had been the only thing he could come up with to do something a little special for her nonetheless.
It wasn't much but it was always better than nothing at all, even though it didn't make him feel less guilty for having forgotten.

Finally making his way to the door he couldn't help but laugh when he heard one of the guy who was entering at the same time he was, whistling loudly as he was obviously impressed with the size of the house. He would have been too, if he hadn't been used to it by now.
Michael certainly lived it up, but he definitely deserved it. He had worked hard for that.
For as long as Max could remember his brother had always said that one day he would be well-known and he hadn't lied. He was indeed a famous painter now and his work was recognized almost everywhere around the world and exposed in every big artistic exhibition in the region. He was the artist of the family. No one knew where his incredible talent was coming from, but he just had it in him and used it amazingly.
He was also a great business man, which explained that after having invested his first cachets in the Stock Exchange and later in his own art gallery, he could now easily afford such a house. Max would certainly not tell him that too often of course, but he was really proud of him.

Speaking of the devil, here he was coming straight to him. Did the guy have some big brother radar? Max wondered.

"Hey MadMax… you made it!" he heard Michael calling to him almost as soon as he set foot in the house. Great, from what he could see his sibling was not totally drunk yet but he was definitely quite intoxicated already.
Man, this was going to be a long night.

"Yeah, I told you I'd come, didn't I?" Max retorted wondering if Michael had really thought he would find something to avoid coming once more.
Not that he hadn't thought about it but well some circumstances required some efforts, and this was one of those.

"I see you couldn't listen to me… you're late!" Michael remarked with a lopsided smirk as he approached him.
Max had known this one was coming but what could he answer to that, huh? It wasn't like he could very well tell him that he had been watching a hockey game before leaving and had thought that it would be way more entertaining for him to see it till the end, even if it was a rerun, than coming here too early. The fact that the later he arrived, the less time he would have to spend here hadn't been lost on him and had made the decision even easier.

"And I see you couldn't wait for me… you're already drunk!" Max taunted back, smiling himself. Until he heard his brother's next reply of course.

"If I had to wait for you to do anything… I'd still be a vi-…" Michael started with his usual teasing only to be cut short when Max gave him a look that dared him to continue. Control man, Maria would kill him if Max left as soon as he had arrived because of him. She was already acting weird since he had gotten back home, no need to add more to whatever trouble he was already in. " … a saint… a real saint… pure and innocent… that's my baby bro!" he finished lamely as one of his arm went around Max's neck to prevent him from pulling away and he started to ruffle his hair quite vigorously with the other hand, making Max almost drop what he was carrying.
In fact he barely had time to deposit everything at his feet on the floor before it was too late.

"Hey… stop that, you're cramping my style man!" Max exclaimed with a grin and carefully smoothed his hair back in place the instant Michael let go of him.

"Yeah like you ever had any!" Michael snorted before laughing openly at him.

"More than you man!" Max threw back and took a quick step aside when he saw that Michael was trying to reach for him again.

"Hey… you, watch your mouth… my hair is a piece of art in itself…" he interjected, making a show of stroking the unruled spikes on his head. It took time to make it look messy and classy at the same time, what did he think?

"Yeah sure… whatever you want to believe Miky!… where do you want me to take that?" Max rolled his eyes and asked, indicating the packs of beer and snacks he had picked up and had now in hands again.
A conversation with Michael about his hair could last a whole night and he wasn't in any mood for one of those right now.

"Like you don't already know the house… c'mon… follow the boss!" Michael instructed as he helped Max, taking one pack of his hands, and headed to the kitchen.

* * * * *

Crap, crap, crap… crap, everywhere! Liz thought as she flicked through the numerous channels without finding anything interesting. Like it was, she would die of boredom tonight here.
Not exactly how she had pictured her evening that was for sure.
She hadn't thought either that not even an hour and a half into the party she would have to go and hide herself in the upstairs lounge room, but after seeing Sean Deluca looking her way from across the living room she hadn't thought about it twice, she had nearly flown to the stairs to avoid him. He was certainly the last person she wanted to see tonight and the fact that she couldn't find Maria at that moment hadn't helped either. At least if his cousin had been there, he wouldn't have even dare approach her but since she was nowhere to be seen at that moment Liz had believed she would be safer there than downstairs.
Well, those had been her thoughts back then but now after having been here for the last 25 minutes, she found herself wondering if it had really been the wisest move. All the fun was downstairs after all, and here, even if she could still clearly hear the music, it wasn't as if she could really enjoy it.
But why had it to be that way in the end? She hadn't come to be kept locked in a room all night just because some idiot had decided they were meant to be, she decided when she had had enough of that ridiculous situation, and turned off the TV before making her way to the hall.

Arriving at the top of the staircase, she chanced a quick look in the living room below and she couldn't help but frown. Apparently she had missed quite a few arrivals.
When she had left, the room wasn't so much packed but now there had to be at least a good 60 persons, maybe even more down there. Maria never really knew how many people were going to show up to those parties anyway, nor did she care in fact. As long as everyone was having fun, that was all that mattered to her.
Well, fun was avoiding her tonight that was for sure, Liz thought as she started to climb down the stairs, doing her best to not tread on anyone's fingers or toes. That was something she hated really; the people who couldn't find any better place to sit than the steps. Like there wasn't enough space anywhere else in the living room to not disturb anyone. Sure, no one was supposed to go upstairs normally, but it didn't change the fact that they had nothing to do there. If it were her house, she wouldn't hesitate and tell them what she thought about that, but since Maria obviously didn't mind, who was she to give them her opinion?

Speaking of Maria, Liz briefly wondered where the other girl could be, when she caught sight of Michael moving to the door to obviously greet the few people that were still arriving. She was ready to go and ask him if he knew where his dear girlfriend was when she was stopped dead in her tracks.

OH. DEAR. GOD. Something had to be really wrong with her vision suddenly, Liz thought as she saw the guy that had just entered and that was almost immediately accosted by Michael.
WOW, talk about an apparition. That guy was literally to die for, but obviously she wasn't the only one to have noticed him, she realized as she saw a few girls who were standing closer to him and were nearly drooling all over him.
Yeah, well, that wasn't at all surprising when you saw his looks and she would certainly drool herself if she wasn't so well brought up, but boy if it was hard not to.
Where had this guy come from? Outer space? Surely there wasn't such specimen living on earth, at least not that she had heard about or even seen in her life before.
Even trying hard, she couldn't tear her eyes off him, too focused she was on studying every detail of his attire: from the black jeans he was wearing to the dark burgundy shirt hidden underneath his long and black leather jacket, everything looked absolutely perfect and sexy as hell on him. And as if it wasn't enough that he had the body of a Greek Adonis, he surely could have compete with the ten most gorgeous men of the universe and won hands down with the face he had.
Liz was all the more surprised by her strong reaction to him since usually she was definitively more attracted by blonds or light brown guys than by dark-haired mystery men, but that didn't mean that she wouldn't give it a try if she had the chance, because honestly if his personality was anything near his looks, in her book he could definitively applied for her masculine ideal.
Then, there was only one way to find out, right?
Yeah, sure, like someone like him could want to talk to someone like her, Liz snorted inwardly. In her fantasy certainly but not in real life.
But even realizing that, she kept observing him nonetheless and couldn't help but smile when she saw Michael messing up with his hair and his reaction to that. God, he was even more amazing when he laughed.
Wow, what was she thinking? More amazing? Where was that coming from?
Maybe she should go and have a drink because her brain seemed to have burned out suddenly, she thought but couldn't make herself move from where she stood for all that. In fact she was only pulled out of her trance by a voice coming from behind her. A voice she recognized almost immediately.

"Hey Liz!" Mandy Edwards smiled and greeted her warmly.

"Mandy… oh my god… hi, how are you?" Liz exclaimed not believing that the girl was there. How long had it been since she had seen her. One, two years?

"I'm fine… girl, you look good!" her friend complimented sincerely as she hugged Liz.

"Thank you… You look good too!"

"Thank you… Where were you hiding Liz?… Maria told me you were here but I couldn't see you anywhere?" was one of the first thing Mandy asked her. Not long after she had arrived Maria had indeed informed her that Liz was alone somewhere but she hadn't been able to find her. She had even started thinking that the girl had left already, which seemed quite strange of course since this was her best friend's birthday party.

"I was upstairs… trying to avoid someone I would rather not meet!" Liz laughed as she remembered why she had left the living room. Of course now with all the people who were gathered in the room, if she was lucky enough he wouldn't even see her but that didn't mean that she didn't have to be careful yet.

"Well… if he's not around here… maybe we could go and have a drink, there is something I would like to talk about with you!" Mandy proposed, when she remembered that Liz seemed to be looking for someone when she had arrived. "You weren't waiting for someone else, were you?"

"No… no… I… " Liz stammered and involuntary looked where Michael had been standing not a moment ago, only to notice that he and his friend weren't there anymore. Where had he gone? she wondered a little disappointed but almost immediately decided to not analyze what she felt. "That would be great yeah… let's go!"

* * * * *

After getting rid of Max's jacket on the way, both guys finally entered the kitchen not the least surprised to see Maria running left and right in the room as she tried to satisfy everyone's need. Some guys wanted more beers, others wanted ice, --who needed ice in December anyway?-- another one some peanuts or whatever and Maria was in the middle of all them, indicating to everyone where everything could be found.
She looked like a chicken whose head had been cut off and knowing better than to mess with her when she was in such a state, Michael and Max left everything they were carrying in a corner and stood near the entrance silently observing her, until she finally spotted them both and made her way to them.
Huh-uh, trouble on the way, Michael instinctively thought as she approached them. He knew his girl and said girl was up to something right this instant, he could bet on it. She looked too innocent suddenly and at the same time there was something in her eyes that told him that something was coming his way. She had made a 180° turn in a matter of seconds and that was never good with her. Of course she could also be just happy to see Max here, but Michael knew the signs too well to think that that was just it.

"Hey 'Ria… happy birthday girlfriend!" Maxwell greeted Maria and pulled her into a hug as soon as she was near him, totally oblivious he was to his brother's thoughts.

"Hey, Maxwell… here you are finally… I thought that we wouldn't see you again tonight!" Maria replied just as cheerfully. It was good seeing him here, despite the fact that he hadn't listened to her. But she was going to take care of that in a second.

"That shows how much you trust me! I told your man I was coming… what more did you want?" Max remarked not the least offended.

"Hmm… I think you said that almost every other time too sweetie, so…" Maria reminded him.

"Well I still don't understand why you didn't tell me sooner about this one, but I'm glad I could come!" Max admitted, really hoping that he would still think the same in an hour or two.

"Precisely… I didn't want you to go and try to find some excuses or something else to do to avoid coming… Today at least we were sure you couldn't lie!" she smiled and said.
The whole reason for not letting him know sooner was to prevent that kind of situation. If she had told him she wanted him to come to one of her parties like two weeks earlier, he would certainly have said that he would think about it, only to refuse in the end or tell her that he already had other plans. Telling him only a few hours prior to the event ensured that he couldn’t decline or find any escape.

"And what if I had indeed something planned already, huh? " Max challenged knowing that he wasn't fooling anyone however.

Of course Maria laughed and looked at him like this was the biggest joke of the day. Like this could really have happened. The only time he really went out was to come and see them or to go to his parents, and Maria had already made sure that this couldn't happen tonight. "C'mon Maxie Boy… I know you! Now… more seriously!… " she paused and indicated to both Max and Michael to move closer. "Come here you two!"

"Wha-" Michael approached and started but he couldn't even get the whole word out that Maria was already grabbing him by the ear with her right hand and his brother with the other one, and all he could do was to parrot Max's surprise yelp. Unfortunately though, Maria didn't seem to care about it nor about the few stares that this little scene was drawing.
Hey, they were people looking and he had a reputation in this town! What was she doing?

"Maxwell… " she began eyeing the younger of the Evans. "Thank you so much for the roses, they are beautiful and I love them but… when I say that I don't want anything for my birthday… it means I. DON'T. WANT. ANYTHING, do you understand?"
Hadn't he often tell his brother that his girlfriend was crazy, huh? Max thought as the girl pulled at his ear and talked to him like a mother scolding her rebellious child while he did his best to not burst into laughter. Somehow he didn't think that this was exactly the reaction she was expecting, but did she really think that she was scaring him? Hurting him a little bit yeah, but scaring him? No way. This was just too hilarious.
But better than getting himself into more trouble, he just mumbled a 'you're welcome' and nodded obediently to each word she said until she turned to Michael to give him a piece of her mind too.
Well, was it too much to ask of her that she just let go of him while she proceeded to do just that?

"And you, dear Michael!" she addressed her boyfriend who though receiving the exact same treatment had unfortunately not as much control over himself as his brother did and was nearly choking on his laughs. Now at least Michael knew why she had been acting so weird when he had gotten back and why she hadn't wanted to tell him who the roses were from. She had already known that he had spilled the beans, she had just waited for the good moment to confront him. "When I specifically tell you to not say something, it means that I want you to keep that big mouth of yours SHUT… do you think you could remember that for the next time or do I have to force it inside your little head, huh? "

"No ma'am!" Michael exclaimed biting his lower lip in a last desperate attempt to maintain some control but to no avail. He squirmed a little trying to make her release him but she just held him tighter and so he finally took her hand and tried to shove it away. "But now that you've made your point… could you just let go of my precious ear before pulling it out completely, please!"

"Why are you always complaining Michael?… do you hear your brother complaining?" Maria asked him as she simultaneously let go of both boys. He was such a child sometimes, it was amazing. But his reaction wasn't exactly the one she had hoped to receive with that remark.

"He doesn't mind… his ears are already sticking out… why would he care, it can't be worse, can it?" Michael cried out trying to look indignant but having a very hard time keeping his seriousness.
Hey, she was the one to throw him the line, and he wasn't one to let a good opportunity pass him by.

"Ah, ah… You're so funny Mike!…swallow your pride and admit it man… you know you'd pay to have these ears!" Max joked back when he heard him and exaggeratedly flipped his ears with his indexes.
Sure he had hated them more than anything else for a long time, but after hearing several times that they made him look even cuter and added to his charm, he had gotten used to them and was even able to make fun of them himself now.
Sticking out ears or not, he was more sexy than Michael could ever be anyway, wasn't he?

"Yeah sure… dumbo!" Michael smirked.
Like hell he would want those ears.

"Dumber!" Max playfully smacked his brother's head and threw back.
Wrong move obviously since he didn't even have time to take a step back that Michael was already on him.

"Don't say you didn't ask for it… you're going down Maxwell!" Michael roared and all but threw himself on his brother, both instantly exploding in a fit of uncontrollable laughter when they started to struggle and wrestle like two children under Maria's incredulous stare.
Oh boy, when were those two going to grow up? And say that one of them was nearly reaching his thirties.

"Michael! Max! The fridge!" she suddenly yelled when they both collided with it and she saw it move with the force of the shock.
But both men were already too wrapped in their little game to even pay attention to such 'details'.

"I told you… to not… tell her… I had told you about her birthday!" Michael managed to say as he kept fighting with his brother, desperately trying to tackle him to the ground.

"I didn't tell her dumbhead… she just have about… a hundred time your IQ… she knew you wouldn't be able to hold your tongue… even before she asked anything of you!" Max retorted between fits of laughter while he did his best to reverse the situation. Did Michael really think it was going to be so easy? He wasn't 13 anymore.

"And what about the roses? Could it not be that, huh?… But did I give you permission to send roses to MY girlfriend?… I … don't… think… so!" Michael accused lightheartedly, groaning afterwards when he realized he was slowly but already losing his grip.
Man, where had gone the time when he could kick Max's ass without even using both his hands. He was getting old.

"What? … Fearing she's gonna realize you're no match to my obvious romanticism… and run away with me?" Max mocked, finally completely disengaging himself from Michael's hold on his upper body.
He didn't know how he had managed to do it but now Michael was bent down in front of him, his arms around his knees in an obvious attempt to make him lose his balance and Max couldn't help himself: he pulled at his brother's pants like he meant to take them off him from above, before winking mischievously at Maria who couldn't hold on any longer and finally exploded too when she heard him.
Who would have thought that Maxwell Evans could be such a tease?
"Go on, baby… start the car… I'll be out in a minute! Just let me kick this guy's fat ass and I'm all yours!" he told her wanting his voice to sound suggestive, but failing and totally cracking up at Michael's reaction when his hand came down on him. Obviously he moderately appreciated to be spanked in front of his girlfriend.

"Keep dreaming, dumbojumbo!" Michael groaned and in a last effort encircled Max around the waist like some rugby man again, and pushed him with all his might, his action unfortunately causing them to go and smash against the kitchen table.
No need to say that that was enough to have Maria stop laughing and going into hurricane mode instantly. She loved that table, no way she was going to let them get it down like they had done with the living room coffee table once.

"Oh lord… okay, children, that's enough… the recreation is over, stop this you two… you're going to end up breaking something!" she cried and tried to grab Michael by his hair, which was certainly the only thing that could make him stop altogether, but to her dismay they kept going at it another moment, until eventually Max managed to have the upper hand again and Michael finally relented.

"Okay…okay… she's right…time out…" Michael declared, his hands on his knees and his breath irregular. "I'm too old for this anyway!"

"Yes… Yes… I'm the winner!" Max beamed, throwing his arms in the air and making the victory sign just before flexing his muscles in front of them like some bodybuilder.

"You're winning my foot in your ass if you don't get out of here this instant!" Michael straightened up and tried to threaten his sibling who obviously couldn't care less.

"You're a bad loser that's all!" Max ribbed and stuck out his tongue at him.
Childish reaction, yeah he knew, but those where the ones that most unnerved Michael.

"I'm losing patience yes… don't push it Maxie Boy!" Michael warned him not really seriously and showed him the direction of the door.

"Fine… fine… I'm out of here then… I'm going to go and lose myself in the mass! I'm so happy… Wish me luck!" Max rolled his eyes exaggeratedly and finally conceded in a fake overjoyed voice. Like that could be fun for him. But hey, he had promised to at least look happy, and well so far the night had started quite well so, maybe the rest would be different this time too. "See you!"
He quickly exited the room but before he could go too far he couldn't help coming back and poked his head into the kitchen again to yell "Loser!" one more time, and then almost immediately ran away when he saw Michael faking to take a step to him.

"You realize you two are really pathetic! One of this day you're going to have to stop this and really grow up!" Maria remarked once they were only the two of them.

"I'm all grown up… he's the one who needs to be taught a lesson from time to time!" Michael answered with a smirk.

"And what a lesson, huh?… he nearly broke your neck!" she pointed out smiling back at him.

"That's just because I'm lacking practice!… I can take him wherever and whenever he wants!"

"Sure… keep telling yourself that, love!" Maria replied and affectionately patted his shoulder. He was certainly too proud to admit it but it was definitively more the other way around.

"Are you challenging me?" Michael raised an eyebrow at her.

"Me? I wouldn't dare!" she brought a hand to her heart and said like she was really shocked he could think that.

"Come here!" Michael grabbed her arm, pulled her flush to him and told her a split second before his lips hungrily descended on hers. He would show her to make fun of him.
"Are we okay?" he couldn't help but softly asked nonetheless afterwards when they came up for air, wondering if she could indeed be really upset with him for telling Max about her birthday. She didn't seem to be but with Maria you never knew, so better be safe than sorry, right?

"We are okay… I guess!" she replied and pressed another kiss to his lips.
She knew what exactly he was asking about and honestly it was no big deal, she just loved to make him squirm. As long as Max was here, it was okay with her and she didn't mind anymore how Michael had made him come. But that didn't mean that she couldn't take advantage of the situation. " But some groveling wouldn't be too much either." she added mischievously.

"I can do that!… later!" he mumbled and kissed her passionately again.

Chapter 3.b

* * * * *

Max stood near the improvised bar looking around him and observing the people with a smirk on his face while he nursed on his beer. He would certainly have laughed out loud at the scene in front of him if he hadn't found it almost pathetic. There should really be a law forbidding people to dance when they were drunk.
Boy, what was this guy trying to do? he wondered as he saw a man obviously attempting to move his body to the music. This certainly could be called whatever you wanted but definitely not dancing. Didn't he realize how ridiculous he looked.
Obviously not, since he kept smiling drunkenly and trying to impress the tall blonde who was struggling to stay on her two feet herself.
What was the point of all that anyway? He was sure that those people weren't even able to still appreciate the music anymore and that they would certainly not even remember having danced together or anything else for that matter later.
He liked to drink from time to time too but never so much that he would forget about what he was doing. That had only happened once in fact and it had occurred back when he was still in high school, and to tell the truth once had been enough to last him a lifetime.
No need to say that Michael hadn't been especially thrilled when he had been called and asked to come and get his intoxicated brother who was singing 'Wake me up before you go-go' from Wham at the top of his lungs, in the middle of the street and in the middle of the night.
Could you picture the scene? Thank God he hadn't managed to find yellow gloves too. It had been bad enough just like it was, and the only reason Michael hadn't killed him for having been woken at 3a.m when he had seen him, was because he had been laughing his ass off from the instant he had arrived and all the way to the house.
Well of course those who had never seen George Michael singing that song in white and blue very tight shorts and pink sweater couldn't really understand some of the jokes Michael was still cracking when they talked about that night, but Max prided himself to have at least tried to stay true to the choreography and the style even in his state. The only thing he hadn't counted on was that his brother would see him like that and of course never forget about it. But like it could have been any other way with him anyway, huh?

After that only time he had promised himself to only drink moderately - one humiliation like that one in a life was enough if you asked him - but right now he would definitely make an exception if it only meant that he would just forget about this party altogether. Fifteen minutes in the living room with everyone else and he was already bored out of his mind and if there was not some action very soon, he was going to fall asleep right where he was. That wouldn't make a very good impression that was for sure but maybe next time then Michael would listen to him and not invite him.
This was just not his thing, he didn't feel at ease in those kind of events as crazy as so many people thought it could be.
Michael hadn't lied when he had said that there would be lots of 'chicks' there, and more than one guy would have given anything just to be in Max's shoes and be able to approach them, but he wasn't interested at all. He knew what most of them were searching for anyway, and that wasn't what he wanted.
Scanning the room once more, he realized that any normal male being would have been on cloud nine among some of those women, but Max, he was just bored. Pathetic, yeah!
That didn't mean that he wasn't looking at them from time to time, he just didn't find anyone who could be his type. There always was something wrong with them.
That blonde on the left? Nope, too vulgar.
The one near the speakers? Fake boobs, definitely not something he was willing to try.
The brunette a few feet from her? Too tall, he didn't like tall girls.
The one with her? Too muscular, she would kick his ass if he said the wrong thing. Besides he needed to feel that he could protect his girl if need be, not the other way around.
The red-…

OH. FUCK.
Someone bring the oxygen, please!
Max all but choked on his beer when the redhead he was just looking at moved to her right and revealed the short brunette that was hidden behind her until now.
His breath caught in his throat and suddenly there wasn't enough air in this room to fill his protesting lungs.
Was he still breathing? Was his heart still beating? He couldn't tell anymore because his brain didn't seem to receive any information any longer.
All he could see was her.
That, people, was definitely his type, if he had ever had one.
Short, dark-haired - with what he was sure had to be long hair but which he couldn't really see since she had it piled up high on her head leaving only a few strands loose - the most beautiful face he had ever seen and what he guessed was a body to wake up the dead.
Oh dear lord, that girl was really dressed to give a guy a heart attack, Max then thought as he saw her turn some more to him when the girl she was talking with finally left and he could really have a good look at what she was wearing now.
A tight dark top made of lace and that showed cleavage enough to drive him totally nuts, with a matching shirt that contrary to the top was slightly see-through, above a pair of leather pants riding low on her perfect hips.
All red and black, his two favorite colors, and god this girl was wearing them to perfection.
If they had been in a cartoon, he had no doubt that he would have looked like the Tex Avery Wolf at this instant, eyes bulging out of his head, jaw on the floor and all but he couldn't bring himself to stop looking at her.
Oh god, wait, had she just looked his way too? She had, right? He wasn't dreaming, was he?

Maria who was passing by arrived just in time to close his mouth, making his teeth snap once in the process, and found it nearly impossible to not laugh at his expression. What was happening to this guy?

"Maxwell, drooling is so unbecoming!" she teased seeing him obviously transfixed, his eyes riveted on someone she couldn't see herself among the throng of people, but who from the look of it had to be something.
By the way, could someone tell her again why she had invited so many people? Most of them she didn't even know, and those she knew where apparently missing or she was having a hard time finding them. Just like Liz who she hadn't seen for a good half an hour now.

"Who… who's that girl?" Max pointed in front of him and stuttered, his eyes never leaving once the beauty on the other side of the room, too afraid he would lose her in the crowd if he just averted his gaze for a second.
Was she even for real, or was it just his imagination playing tricks on him? If it was, this was definitely some cruel joke.
Almost as cruel as the fact that some other guy who was not him was near her now, obviously trying to make her listen to him. But even from the distance Max could swear he had seen her tense the instant he had arrived and he couldn't help wondering if something was wrong.

"Which one?" Maria demanded, trying to see herself who he was looking at, but still unable to spot anyone that could put Max in such a state. Like she could really follow the line of his finger with all the girls who were there in front of him, duh?

"Never mind!" Max hastily replied and gave her his beer before leaving her on her spot when he saw the man grabbing at her arm and the girl yanking it off immediately.

Maxwell Evans asking himself for information about a girl and going for it, that was a first and something she definitely couldn't miss, Maria thought as she tried to follow him with her gaze and see who the mystery girl he was going after was.
No need to say that she nearly had a fit of hysteria right there, right then when she realized that the person he was obviously marching to was none other than her best friend.
YES!… she knew that that outfit was a killer.
And what do you say people? Oh no, that's too much… but you're right, Maria Deluca is the best… Thank you… Thank you!
Hey, but wait… what the hell was her moron of a cousin doing with Liz when he had no right to, and what was Max doing now?

* * * * *

"C'mon Liz… just a dance… it won't kill you!" Sean Deluca tried again, hoping Liz would relent and accept his invitation if he insisted enough.
Since as far as he could remember he had always liked his cousin's best friend but for a long time Maria had kept repeating that he didn't stand a chance, until one day she had been so fed up with his insistence that she had finally agreed to talk Liz into accepting at least one invitation. Unfortunately for him Sean had blown that date big time, but he was more than ready to repair the damage now, if that was still possible of course.

So much for trying to avoid him, huh? Liz thought.
The instant Mandy had left her, he had appeared from nowhere and she hadn't been able to react fast enough. What had she done to deserve that? And why had Maria invited him to begin with, huh?

"I said no Sean… I know exactly what you want and I told you already, I'm not interested!" she reiterated more forcefully this time.
What was this guy's problem? Was he deaf besides being dumb?

"It's just a dance… I'm not asking you to marry me here!… Can't you at least try to be nice for once!" Sean reproached her, having some difficulties to understand why she was being so bitchy tonight. Still holding grudges obviously.

"I tried to be nice with you once and you know how it ended! You and me Sean… it just doesn’t work… I thought you got it after last time!" Liz reminded him dryly, wondering how he still dared just talking to her. The guy was unbelievable.

"Well… last time I wasn't myself…" Sean argued, trying to defend himself but doing a poor job at it.

"Last time you were drunk… just like you are now or any other time you go somewhere!" Liz accused as she eyed the drink he had in hands, even if she also suspected that he wasn't just only inebriated.
It was a well known fact now that Sean Deluca didn't only smoke cigarettes. The only problem was that Liz had had to discover that on their first and only date, which of course had turned to be a real nightmare.
Come to think about it, never in her life had she spent such a horrible moment in fact.
First, he had taken her to a cheap and grimy restaurant that certainly would have not survived a sanitary inspection had she reported it. After that he had dragged her to some sort of club that she wouldn't even have dared recommend to her worst enemy but where she had had to look how he emptied beer after beer and pathetically tried to show her how he could dance in between and then, when she had finally thought that her torture was over, he had told her that he needed to go and see some friends a brief moment but that she was of course very welcome to go with him.
Since she hadn't driven her own car that night, she hadn't had so much choice but to follow, but she had quickly regretted her decision when what was supposed to take him only a few minutes had ended up in a big drinking session in front of a football game, where Sean had had more than his share of alcohol and 'smokes' again and had completely forgotten about her.
Consequently she had decided to leave him there with his drunken buddies and left without a second thought, before realizing that she didn't even know where she was.
Factor in that she had forgotten to take her cell and that she had been unable to find a damn phone booth in the whole area, that she had had to walk what seemed like an eternity until she had recognized anything familiar and that even then it had taken her nearly 20 minutes to finally be able to join someone she knew who could come and get her, and yeah it had really been one hellish night.
Maria was still paying herself for that arranged date and it was only because she had the 'best friend's status' that she had been forgiven in the end. And the guy was still wondering why she hadn't returned his calls or why she was avoiding him like the plague, could he be more stupid?

"Oh c'mon we had fun baby… it was a great date, wasn't it?" he countered, choosing to remember only what was more convenient to him.
He barely remembered what had happened after they had arrived at his friend's place anyway. All he knew was that when he had woken up the next morning, Liz was nowhere to be seen and that Maria had made it very clear when he had seen her two days later that she didn't want him to ask for any more favor ever again, and claimed something about being lucky he was family otherwise she would have already cut his balls.
Well, she always threatened him with one thing or another anyway, so he hadn't taken her very seriously that time either.

"It might have been for you but believe me I can't say that much…" Liz retorted coldly not even caring if she hurt his feelings.
Anyway, in the state he was, he would surely not even remember this conversation in a few hours. Why was she even wasting her time talking to him then, huh? "Now Sean if you don't mind… I'm waiting for someone so… why don’t you go and try to find someone else who would actually want to talk to you!"

"That's not a very nice thing to say Elizabeth… besides, I'm sure you're just trying to get rid of me… but I'm just fine here!"

"You're so clever Sean!" Liz deadpanned and rolled her eyes as she saw him smiling like an idiot. "You know what… if you're not moving, I guess I'll just have to do so myself!"

* * * * *

After having quickly made his way to the other side of the room Max stood a moment near the couple, wondering if he should intervene or not. They weren't really fighting per say, but if the girl's body language was any indication, she didn't seem to be very pleased with the situation. Of course he couldn't make up every word they were saying from where he was, but it was quite obvious to him that she looked upset.
On the other hand, maybe this was just some ordinary lovers' fight and if it was only that, who was he to interfere in it?
He wouldn't appreciate it himself, if someone came and poked his or her nose in his business if it was the other way around, so he could only imagine how they would react if he did something he shouldn't.
Like it was, he could certainly have spent the rest of the night there, debating over the best thing to do, but what happened next and what he finally heard quite clearly, gave him all the reasons he needed to act. It was quite risky of course, but after all the worst that could happen to him was to have her slap him or put him down in front of everyone, right? Well, he could live with that.
Time to grow some balls Evans!
Breathing heavily first, Max finally stepped closer praying that he was really doing the right thing and not making the matter worse.
Just because he wasn't sexually active or currently in a relationship didn't mean that he didn't know 'some moves', so he just hoped that he wasn't going to screw this up.

* * * * *

"Oh no wait!" Sean interjected, grabbing Liz's arm for the second time this night when she tried to walk away. "I'm just asking for a dance… one dance and I leave you alone." he promised, still somewhat managing to think that once he would have her in his arms, it wouldn't be long before she realized that she wanted this as much as he did. He was made for her. Or so he believed.

"No… you're the last person in the world I would want to dance with anyway!" Liz refused once more and scanned the room in hope that she would find someone she knew who would save her from Sean's company. Where were her friends when she needed them?

"Oh yeah… you're waiting for someone else, huh? … and who's that? Invisible Man?… I have my sources Lizzie… and I know you're not seeing anyone lately!" Sean slurred slightly and Liz briefly wondered how he was still able to even think or just utter an entire sentence in his state. The habit certainly, she concluded as she saw him smirk and take another gulp of whatever beverage he was having. What a loser.

Finally losing all patience with him and deciding that she had had enough, Liz was ready to give him a piece of her mind and make clear once and for all that she didn't want to have anything to do with him, that in fact just even breathing in the same air than him was enough to make her sick, when she suddenly felt someone --a male someone to be precise -- coming up behind her and tenderly circling her waist with his arm and she couldn't help her gasp of surprise when a mere second later she felt his hand brush her stomach and send like an electric jolt through her entire being.

She looked down at the man's hand covering her middle now and then up ready to throw a fit or curse whoever dared touch her like that when she was positive that she didn't know him, but her breath and whatever she was ready to say instantly caught in her throat when she realized that said hand belonged to the guy she had been admiring as he was entering.
Wow, what was happening here? Was she dreaming suddenly?
She had to, because only in her dreams could guys like him want to touch her or be so close to her. And only in her dreams could they look at her with such awe in their eyes. Incredibly beautiful eyes by the way. Was he wearing colored lens?
Oh yes no doubt people, she was dreaming otherwise how could it be explained that she had gone from Quasimodo's disgusting grip to Prince Charming's gentle embrace in a matter of seconds. She just hoped she wouldn't ever wake up, if he ever kissed her.

"Hey, sweetheart…" she then heard him whisper to her as he leant to brush a quick kiss on her cheek and she nearly fainted in his arms. "Here you are! I've been looking for you everywhere!"

"Hey!" Liz answered back a little hesitantly, wondering if the guy was drunk too and was mistaking her for someone else or something but when she saw his smile and the look on his eyes, she knew he was just as sober as she was. And truth be told, at the moment she didn't even care what was his problem or what he wanted or even if he thought she was someone she wasn't, as long as he helped her getting rid of Sean that was enough, because if she had to choose she would rather go anywhere with this hunk she didn't even know from Adam, than staying a minute longer with this idiot of Sean.

"Wow, wow, wait here… who's that?… care to present us Lizzie?" Sean asked, eyeing the newcomer suspiciously.
Who was this guy and what did he want with Liz? Couldn't he see that he was already onto her and that if she had to leave with anyone tonight it would be him.
Was he her…? No, she didn't have anyone he knew of in her life, he had asked for confirmation not a day ago when he had met one of her close friends and learned that she would indeed be coming to his cousin's party. That was the main if not the only reason he was here tonight, and now this cheap Tom Cruise was going to ruin everything.

"Don't call me Lizzie…" Liz started unable to help the disgusted glare she threw his way. She hated when people called her 'Lizzie', or at least she hated it now, and it sounded even worse coming from him. "Sean Deluca… this is… " Liz paused again wondering what she could call him, she didn't even know his name, but there was only one thing she could say that would make Sean understand she wasn't interested at all and give up. She just hoped he wouldn't deny it or humiliate her in front of him, but if he was there to begin with it had to be for a reason, and so as she unconsciously caressed his hand she began again: "My boyfriend!… the someone I was just telling you about!"

"Hi… Nice to meet you!" Max greeted the other man with a forced smile but dismissed him quickly, not even paying attention to his grunted answer or making the connection with Maria's last name.
Instead he turned to the girl again and looking at her with concerned eyes, he addressed her tenderly, inwardly wishing his heart to stop beating so fast every time she looked up at him. Easier said than done, she was driving him crazy. "Is everything alright?"

"Yeah… don't worry!" she whispered, nearly melting on the spot when she met his intense gaze. His arm was still around her, his hand resting on her hip now and she could swear she was feeling its warmth spreading all the way to her heart.
What the heck was happening to her? And who was this man?

"Okay… would you dance with me now then?" Max proposed, wanting to get her out of there as quickly as possible.
Granted he didn't know the guy, but he didn't have much confidence in him to say the least. He had seen how she had reacted to his touch and that was enough for him. Obviously she didn't want him anywhere near her -- not that she had said anything positive about him either but at least she hadn't seemed too disgusted with his presence till now, so that was a good sign, right? -- so if he could help her, he would gladly do it.
And of course it had nothing to do with the fact that she had to be the most beautiful girl in the place, of course not! His action was totally disinterested.
Okay, he wasn't kidding anyone obviously.
It had everything to do with who she was, but what could he say? One look at her and he had been a goner, he couldn't deny that. She affected him, terribly, and he would give anything to just get to know her, so when usually he would have stayed away really pondering the thing first, with her there hadn't been so much hesitancy: he had just gone for it and before he could even really think about what he was doing, his feet were already taking him to her and he really couldn't bring himself to regret it.
He just hoped he would be able to control his nerves and not do something stupid in her presence, but it wasn't done. And it wouldn't be, if she didn't stop bating those long beautiful dark lashes at him. Of course he was sure that she wasn't doing it on purpose, but it was killing him slowly nevertheless.
What had he gotten himself into? He wasn't prepared for this kind of emotions.
No need to say that her next answer didn't arrange the matter and nearly made him trip over his own feet then.
She didn't mean that, right? Or was it just his lucky night tonight and he hadn't even realized it yet.

"I-I've been waiting for this all night!… " Liz told him suggestively briefly locking her gaze with his and then she turned to Sean one last time, almost laughing out loud when she saw his face. Obviously he was not too pleased with the turn of events. But like she cared anyway. "Will you excuse us Sean…" she finally said and linking her arm with the stranger's she guided him to the improvised dance floor, too happy to leave Maria's cousin behind.
They didn't go far though since they both heard Sean's irritating voice the second they moved.

"Yeah… whatever… " Sean sneered, dismissing them with a wave of his hand before muttering under his breath. "Slut"

"What did you just say?" Max instantly spun around not sure he had heard him right but thinking that if he had, there would be hell to pay. Who did this guy think he was?
Max didn't understand why he was feeling so protective or why having him insulting someone he didn't even know upset him so much, but he didn't even stop to think about it. He just marched back to him ready to beat the hell out of the guy if he had to, when he gazed at him like he had done nothing wrong and Max instantly saw red.

"What? What's your problem man?" Sean stared at Max and asked as if he couldn't understand why he was suddenly advancing back to him.

"You!… YOU are my problem…" Max all but hissed, trying to control the growing rage he was feeling at the moment. He wasn't usually the violent type but there was just some things that totally unnerved him and this guy was definitely pushing the wrong buttons.

"Boo-hoo… I'm so scared!" Sean mocked as he raised his hands in defense, too fast obviously, causing him to slightly lose his balance and stumble back and forth in his drunken state.
God, either this guy was crazy or he had some serious suicidal tendencies, but if it was just that a good ass-kicking would certainly help him with whatever problem he had, Max thought.
However before he could come any closer to him, he felt the brunette pulling at his arm and heard her sweet voice penetrating through the blur of anger that was clouding his senses and just like it had come, almost instantly most of it diminished.

"No, No… wait… it's okay… don't… don't pay any attention to him… it doesn't matter!… he's so not worth it!" Liz pleaded with him, her voice showing more fear than she wanted him to see.
Of course Sean so deserved what was obviously coming to him, and she felt quite honored that this man who absolutely didn't know the first thing about her wanted to defend her and was ready to come to blows for that or risk being hurt himself even, but generating a fight here was the last thing she wanted and moreover with Maria's cousin. Granted he was an idiot, but he was Maria's family nonetheless, and though the man with her seemed to know Michael quite well she didn't want him to be in trouble with Maria or him.
Knowing her best friend, even sure that her cousin was the one at fault here she wouldn't appreciate to see someone beating him up in her house -- because that was what was going to happen if she didn't stop them, since it was absolutely clear to her that Sean was in no state to win this fight -- and therefore she would naturally try to defend him. And of course Michael being Michael he would certainly backed her up in any way, even if he was definitely not fond of Sean Deluca himself. But Liz had long understood that no one came before Maria, even his friends and she didn't want to be the one responsible for any problem between this man and him, however insignificant they could be.

"But…" Max tried to protest thinking that he couldn't let that pass. This guy obviously needed to be taught a lesson and he was more than ready to be the one to do so.

"Please!… let's go dance… please!" she insisted looking at him with desperate pleading eyes again and Max found himself unable to resist her. Those big brown eyes were lethal.

"O-okay!" he finally accepted but not before throwing another death glare to the guy who kept mumbling things he couldn't quite understand anymore now.

Taking the hand she was offering him, Max followed her to the dance floor just as Coldplay's 'Trouble' started and he realized that this wasn't exactly the type of song he had thought they would be dancing to when he had made his offer.
Of course he could do slow, better than anything else actually, he just wasn't sure he would be able to be so close to her and still manage to move. To be honest, just the thought of her perfect body in his arms was almost enough to make him lose all of his bravado.
Liz looked up at him and smiled when she saw that he suddenly seemed to be quite embarrassed. Strange, she thought, for someone who looked so confident and ready to fight not five minutes ago.
She let go of his hand, missing his touch instantly and during a brief instant they stood awkwardly there, face to face, looking at each other without saying a word and smiling shyly, both of them not really sure about how they should act, until Liz decided to take the initiative.
She didn't really know what she was supposed to do, if it would be welcome to step really closer to him or if she should rather keep a safe distance between them, but she finally chose to go for what seemed the most natural and therefore, she slowly wrapped her arms around his neck like she saw many others do around her, carefully sizing up his reaction nonetheless just in case he thought it was going too far. After all she didn't know him.
However after only a little hesitance, Max eventually followed her lead, gently placing his hands on the small of her back and slowly they swayed to the music, both of them instantly overwhelmed by the sensations being in the other's arms brought them.
Say that Liz wasn't anywhere near prepared for what she felt when he touched her again had to be the understatement of the century. And as if that wasn't enough the guy's scent was really nearly enough to make her liquefy in his arms, which would have certainly happened if he hadn't held her tightly enough. It shouldn't be allowed to smell that good.
Max as for him was trying hard to breathe normally and concentrate on what he was doing so that he wouldn't step on her feet or something and ruin this, but the task revealed to be nearly impossible when she suddenly started to stroke the hair at the nape of his neck. Was she even conscious of her gesture? Anyway, aware or not, couldn't she see what this was doing to him?
Boy, this was going to be the longest and hardest slow dance of his life, but honestly he wouldn't wish to trade this moment for any one else. As difficult as it was for him to remain in control, this was pure bliss nonetheless.

For a brief moment they just danced in silence then, both savoring the instant and marveling at the feel of the other, until Liz couldn't take it anymore and said the first thing she could think about. In fact, she should certainly have done so as soon as they had left Sean, she realized.

"Thank you… I-I thought he would never leave me alone." she tried to make light fun of the situation but chuckled a little embarrassed afterwards when the words came out more quavering than she had wanted them to.
What a way to start! she groaned inwardly. Here she was with this stranger that had certainly saved her from a very uncomfortable situation and she didn't even know what to tell him or how to speak to him without sounding like a high school girl.

"You're welcome!… It was a pleasure being a substitute for your boyfriend or whatever you want to call it… I hope he won't mind though!" he answered with an involuntary smile as he remembered what he had felt when he had heard her say the word. MY boyfriend, he liked the sound of that in her mouth and he would definitely not mind really gaining that status. At all. But from what he had heard, the job could be already taken unfortunately.

"I don't have a boyfriend actually!" Liz revealed before she could stop herself while inwardly she was thinking 'not yet, but you could definitely change that fact!'.
Yeah, keep dreaming Liz, like this guy could really be interested, he was just helping you out, she then immediately scolded herself when she realized how crazy her thoughts were. Above and beyond, he certainly had a girlfriend himself. No way such a man could be single.

"Oh… I thought… I mean I heard… " Max stammered a little, sure that he had heard her saying she was waiting for someone and almost fearing to really hope now.
On the other hand, it was true that she hadn't sounded so much convincing when she had said so and no one had come to rescue her but him. Besides, the other guy himself had insinuated she was lying and it looked like he knew her quite well, so it could have been only some excuse. He had done so himself more times than he was willing to remember.

"Nah… I was just trying to find something to get rid of him!" Liz admitted a little uncomfortably.

"Well… uh… that's good to know!" Max answered, hoping he didn't sound too happy about that fact. He didn't know by which miracle that was even possible but not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, he wasn't about to question his luck either. "I'm Max, by the way!"

"Liz!"

"Liz…" he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and softly repeated in awe. "A beautiful name for a beautiful woman!" he then whispered a little more huskily than he intended at first, his eyes admiringly lingering on her flawless face and he couldn't help but smile again when he saw her blush lightly.
God she really was beautiful. And she smelled exquisitely too, he immediately thought as he caught another whiff of her sweet perfume.
Had he died and gone to heaven?

"Thank you!" Liz forced the words out, finding it more and more difficult to stand on her two feet with the way this man was making her feel. She didn't believe in love at first sight, but girl she was having all the symptoms.

"You're still welcome. " Max told her as he unconsciously pulled her even closer to his body and they continued to dance, oblivious to the world around them.

It's a AU fic though, with no aliens.

Rating: MATURE or ADULT for some contents I guess :-?

AN: So... I first wanted to wait a little more before posting this part and do so this weekend, but since it looks like I'm going to be very busy until then and I didn't want you to have to wait too long, I finally decided to do it now... hope nobody's going to mind
As for the 4 chapters... let me explain what I meant by almost already finished... as things are, 4 and 7 are completely finished... but 5 and 6 still need a few things to be changed or added so of course you'll have them as soon as possible, but don't worry if it's not as fast as you wished
Another little point and then I let you go and read the new part... in this chapter Liz's last name is not Parker... you will learn later why... so just don't think it was a mistake, okay!
That's it... enjoy the new part

Chapter 4

" So… uh… I-I've never seen you here before… are you one of Michael's friend?" Liz asked out of the blue when she calmed some down and noticed they were both growing quite again. Maybe if she kept talking he wouldn't leave her at the end of that song she hoped.
Of course she already knew the answer to that question but she decided to act as if she hadn't seen him with Michael sooner. She didn't want him to know that she had been checking him out before or that she was currently on cloud nine because he had had the good idea to come and talk to her.

"You could say that yeah!… you?" Max answered cryptically and returned the question, knowing that sometimes people got there but didn't really know the person organizing. They came with friends of friends of Michael or Maria and since he hadn't seen her either at the few parties he had attended so far, maybe it was the first time she came here.

"Yeah… so… uh… how come I never saw you before, huh?" she probed slightly intrigued. Where was he hiding all the other times she had to attend here, all alone and bored or being hassled by some freaky jerks?

"Well… I was living in Boston for the past few years… I only came back in July… but I came to some of Mike's parties occasionally even then, when I was in town I mean… and I didn't see you either…"
'And believe me I would have noticed you if I had', he wanted to add but stopped just before the words escaped his mouth. No need to scare her away, right?

"And yet I've come to most of them… were you here last month? I don't remember seeing you." she remarked, thinking that she would definitely have remembered such a guy if she had come across him anywhere before. It wasn’t' everyday that you met someone like him and he was definitely of those who left you with an everlasting impression.

"Yeah… yeah… but… I'll just say that circumstances made that I had to leave early… and well, I'm not exactly a big fan of Michael's parties anyway so... " he was quick to explain. Unfortunately, he thought afterwards. If he had made some efforts all the other times, maybe he would have met her earlier, and that would have been motivation enough to come back any time later.

"So what brought you here tonight then? What made you change your mind I mean?" she asked, remembering that not all the guests knew that it was Maria's birthday.
Some of them had been invited by Michael and didn't really care about the occasion. All they wanted was to have a good time and be able to drink as much as they could, for free of course.
He seemed different though. More composed, more serious even, not really the type to get totally smashed and do or say all those stupid things people usually did when they were drunk. He didn't seemed to be here just for the fun or to find some breasted bimbo he could end the night with either. The best proof was that he was actually dancing with her, when he could be with anyone else without the slightest difficulty.
She wasn't blind enough to not have noticed how some girls had eyed her up and down when they had walked together and started to dance. It had to look hard to believe that he could have actually chosen to be there with someone like her. Or at least that was what she had figured.

"Destiny calling?" Max quipped and smiled down at her.
Honestly, he didn't know if he actually believed in destiny or not but he was ready to believe in anything at the moment, as long at it was related to her.

"Seriously!" she admonished playfully.

"Besides being Maria's birthday?.. Let's just say that someone kind of made me an offer I couldn't refuse… not that I regret it now believe me!" he confessed with a big sexy grin that made Liz's knees go weak.

This guy wasn't for real she thought as she heard him, and couldn't help blushing again. Was he really saying that now he was glad he had come… because of her. She didn't want to get her hopes up, but she couldn't deny that just the thought was really exhilarating.

* * * * *

"What are you looking at?" Michael asked as he came behind his girlfriend, tenderly encircling her waist with his arms and kissing her neck.
Without even turning around Maria just pointed at the couple with her head, a thousand watts smile plastered on her face. Who could say now that she didn't have good intuitions from time to time, huh?
She had been observing them ever since Max had joined Liz and though she was sure that they didn't even realize it themselves, those two could have heated up the whole room just with the way they were looking at each other. Their chemistry and mutual attraction were so evident it was a wonder they had managed to keep dancing for so long and not already started to devour one another right there on the floor. She didn't give them long though. At least she hoped they were going to take that way. They were made for each other, she could feel it.

"Oh Lord 'Ria… what did you do? I told you to stop trying to set Max up with everyone… at least you were supposed to try it just for tonight!" Michael scolded her right away, knowing that Max would have his neck for that.
He had specifically asked him to not let Maria play matchmaker tonight and Michael had made her promise to do just as she was told for once, hoping she would leave Max alone at least for this time, and as soon as he had turned his back to her, what did she do?
They had discussed her intentions of trying to see how things could work between Max and Liz when he had come back home and he had thought she had understood that it wasn't a good idea, but she always had to go her own way, didn't she?

"Well unfortunately Mike… that… is not my work!" Maria replied, not taking offense of Michael's comment but the disappointment over the situation evident in her voice.
How many times had she tried to have Max and Liz meeting each other without success, and the only time she was under specific orders to not do anything, that was when it happened. They couldn't have waited until next time so she could have collaborated at least a little, could they?

"It isn't?… you mean…" he trailed, taking some time to really observe them.
Wait a minute, it didn't seem to be any kind of torture to Max.

"Yep… look at him… I think that's the most I have seen him smile or laugh with anyone since I've known him!… Beside you and me I mean!" Maria remarked as she laced her fingers with his.
This Max looked totally different from the Max she was used to.

"Yeah… tell me about it!" Michael commented as he looked at his brother dancing in his living room. He didn't remember ever seeing him so carefree with someone of the opposite sex or looking so happy at one of his parties. When had he even danced at all, huh?
He had been afraid that Max would rapidly get bored tonight but obviously he had been wrong since for once he really seemed to be enjoying himself. And honestly it was good seeing him like that. "So if it's not you… what happened?… Did Little Lizzie make her moves on my bro?"

"Nope… you wouldn't believe it… your dear brother was here one minute and the next his jaw nearly dropped to the floor and then… woosh… he was near her in the blink of an eye!"

"You have to be kidding me?" Michael exclaimed, his eyes traveling from his girlfriend to his brother and Liz, and back to Maria again.

"Not at all Michael… he scared my cousin away I think, which in a way is a good thing coz he so doesn't deserve Liz… I mean I don't know what came over me the day I accepted to back up Sean in his delirium, they are so diff…."

"Maria!" Michael interrupted her knowing that it could take her hours to go to the point otherwise.

"Yeah well… anyway… so like I was saying… he came behind her, talk to her and Sean a minute… and well… to make a long story short… they have been like that, dancing and talking ever since!" Maria finally revealed, passing over the fact that Liz had obviously been in some trouble when Max had gone to talk to her. But knowing Michael and his particular affection for her cousin, he would certainly look for him and throw him out of his house the instant he would hear about that.
Michael tended to be quite protective when it came to her but he had quickly developed the same protectiveness regarding Liz. Not that she minded anyway, she was glad that her man and her best friend were getting along so well. But then if his brother was involved too, she didn't even want to start imagining what he would do to Sean, which in her opinion would serve him just right anyway, if only for not listening to her and approaching Liz again. Michael might always be teasing his brother for one thing or another, but he would give an arm for him without even thinking about it twice, or kill anyone who would be fool enough to do him any harm.

"That's a great thing, right?" Michael more questioned than stated.
He knew his brother and if he had moved himself that had to mean that Liz had made quite an impression on him. Therefore he could only hope that the feeling was mutual because he really didn't want to see him ending hurt in any way.

"Oh, it surely is! Don't they look cute together?" Maria beamed, showing how proud she was that she had been so perceptive.

"Maria… he's my brother… the only time I found him cute was back when he couldn't talk yet!" Michael joked finding the easy way to not have to answer to that.
He was a man and men didn't say 'cute', did they? At least not talking about another guy, and even less when said guy was their own brother. That would be so weird, and totally unmanly. Better talk about something else.
"So… are you going to stay here and look at them all night… or are we going to join them and shake those hot bods too, huh?" he then asked her moving his body suggestively behind her and by the look of it Maria knew that 'dancing' was the last thing in his mind. Or at least she thought they wouldn't be dancing 'vertically' any time soon.

"Oooh… you're such a romantic Evans!" Maria turned around and expelled an exaggerated awed sigh just before Michael threw her above his shoulder and the only sound that could be heard coming from her mouth then was her laughter.

"Yes that's me!… come on woman, I'll show you how I move!"

* * * * *

Oblivious to the audience they had, Max and Liz continued to enjoy dances after dances in each other's arms, not even realizing how long they had been dancing or talking like they were or noticing some of the jealous looks they were receiving.
Most of the couples there changed partners from time to time, but those two seemed to be completely and only wrapped into each other and totally impermeable to their surroundings. For an external eye they surely looked like a long and well established couple, obviously in love and not many people would have believed that they had actually only met had they been told so.
As a matter of fact, only when the music became more rhythmic again did they seem to finally pull out of their own little world, and only then did they both stopped, suddenly staring at each other a little self-consciously, that simple act the only real giveaway that they were actually new to this.

"Look… Liz… wh-what would you say about… about going somewhere else?… I mean, somewhere where we could actually… talk! Would it be okay?" Max asked hesitantly, almost fearing to ruin the moment if he didn't say the right thing.
What was sure though was that he didn't want them to go separate ways just now, he was enjoying her company way too much for that, so he couldn’t not at least try, right?

"Yes… I would like that." Liz replied immediately, glad for the opportunity to get out of there and find some place less crowded where she could actually get to know him a little better. And girl if she wanted to know this man.

"Great… good… let's see if we can find something interesting to do then!" he proposed innocently so, only to have Liz's imagination going wild the second she heard the suggestion. She had a few things in mind herself and that she would be more than happy to share with him if he would just ask her. But maybe it was too soon yet for that.
Oh God, had she just thought that? Something had to be really wrong with her because she wasn't thinking clearly anymore.

Making his way through the crowd of people, Max tried to think quickly about what they could actually do or where they could go, when he came up with the perfect place. At least he hoped it would be and that she would be okay with it. It would certainly be a little cold but there they would be all alone and they would be able to talk without any interruptions or without having to shout over the sometimes too loud music. But before that, they needed to make a few stops.

Entering the kitchen with Liz in tow, Max ignored the few people who were going left and right trying to find anything to drink that would be preferably greatly alcoholic, and instead went directly for the fridge. If he knew his near sister-in-law well enough, which of course he did, she would have just what he was searching for in there.
Bingo! He loved that girl, he thought as he grabbed the pack of cherry cokes and quickly placed it on the fridge top to take later.

"Okay… this is taken care of… come with me now!" he said once that done and naturally took Liz's hand in his.
Liz followed blindly, wondering where he could be taking her now, when they started to climb the kitchen spiral staircase that led to the first floor inevitably drawing some looks from some girls and guys who certainly were having the wrong idea.
Wait, he wasn't thinking about what she thought he could be thinking, could he?
No, that just sounded ridiculous, he didn't seem to be the type at all.
Yeah, but what if she was wrong? What did she know about this man after all?
Well, obviously he wasn't taking her where she had first thought, she realized when they finally stopped in front of the first door upstairs.

Having reached what Liz always supposed to be Michael's office since she had never been in there before, she saw as after entering the room he went directly for the large desk and started to rummage through the different pencil holders then drawers, obviously with something specific in mind and she couldn't help looking at him quizzically.
What was he doing?

"Oh, hmm… Max… you know…uh… what you're doing here could certainly be considered as a violation of property." Liz declared not really at ease with the situation. Maybe they should have asked Michael for permission first. Max was visibly looking for something and though she didn't think that she had to fear he was going to take anything from here that wasn't his, she wouldn't like herself to find someone going through her things even if she knew the person. She could only imagine then how Michael would react if he came up suddenly and found them both here.

"What?"

"I know you know him… but I'm not sure Michael would appreciate seeing you going through his things." she voiced her thoughts hoping it wouldn't upset him.

"Oh don't worry, I doubt Michael would prosecute me… and even if he did, it wouldn't be a problem for me to find a good lawyer to defend my case!" he joked good-naturedly which strangely helped Liz relax a bit. He seemed rather sure that this was okay, but it didn't explain everything for all that.

"Oh really, and how come? If you don't mind me asking, of course… Are you used to breaking the law or what?" she asked part teasing this time but quite curious nonetheless. He didn't look dangerous at all, but appearances could be deceiving, couldn't they?
What if he was indeed a thief, or some rapist or… Geez, get a grip Liz, this has to be the stupidest thing you've ever thought about.

"No, I'm no delinquent don’t worry Liz…" Max chuckled, but when he saw her raising an eyebrow as if to say that she was waiting for more explanations, he further elucidated. "I'm just my own lawyer, that's all I meant!"

"You… you're a lawyer!" she repeated a little surprised.
She would have thought that such a guy had to be a model or some actor, after all they were in LA and he definitely had the looks and the charisma for if you asked her.
Then, when she really thought about it, she could easily picture him in a court too, all confident and impressive and she would certainly pay to see him pleading a case.

"Yep… Evans&Evans Associates… you have problems, we solve them… just give us a call!" he mocked, his voice sounding more like one out of a cheap commercial than anything as serious as lawyers could be.

"Oh wait a minute, wait a minute… y-you are Max like in Maxwell Evans?" Liz suddenly opened big stunned eyes and asked.
No, he had to be kidding.
Could it be?

"Well… last time I checked that was me, yeah!" Max quipped while he continued to open and close drawers.
Where were those damned keys?

"Like in Maxwell, brother of Michael Evans!" she went on, all the pieces of the puzzle finally clicking in.
No wonder he had wandered around the house like it was his own or like he knew it by heart. They were at his brother's house for heaven's sake, of course Michael wouldn't say anything to him.
How could she have been so stupid? Moreover when she had heard about him so many times before. And how did she manage to not make the connection between 'Max' and 'Maxwell'? How hard was that, huh?
Well, to her defense she could only say that he had made such an impression on her that she hadn't stopped to think about anything else. And it wasn't as if he had helped her or given her any clue either.
'You could say that, yeah!' he had told her when she had asked if he was one of Michael's friend. No kidding, buddy.

"Still true… I take it that you indeed know Michael quite well and that you've heard about me then!"

"Yes… yes oh god you have no idea… " Liz nodded and admitted, struggling very hard to not burst into laughter. If only he knew how many times she had heard about him.
No doubt Maria was going to love it when she would tell her that she had indeed met Maxwell Evans and that she had literally fallen under his spell.
Come to think about it, maybe she should keep that last part for her only if she didn't want to hear about how right Maria was, or how she should listen to her more often and blablabla for the rest of her life.

"That bad, huh?" Max smirked back, trying his best to keep his composure when he was all but swearing inside that he would just kill his brother if he had said anything that could compromise his chances with her. If he had had any to begin with of course.

"No, no… don't worry… nothing really bad was revealed… just a few… embarrassing little secrets of yours!… things you would better keep untold!" she teased, even if only to get even with him for not revealing sooner that he was Michael's brother.

"You're kidding me?… what could he have said?… I mean it's not like I-I have anything to hide." Max replied wishing he could naturally keep on with his 'let's look cool' plans but obviously failing quite miserably.

"Relax Max… I am just kidding… actually I don't know Michael that much… but you should be careful of what is said in Maria's presence!" she admitted when she saw his face.

"What do you mean?" Max questioned, feeling even more apprehension.
Michael talked a lot sometimes, but he was absolutely no match to Maria. If she really knew her, chances were that she had to know about almost every little single details the other girl knew about him, and that could be a lot considering that she was his brother's girlfriend.
Dreading the worse, he frowned when he saw as she tried to put a serious front, then plastered the biggest smile he could have seen in anyone's face and after stifling some giggles she went for the kill.

"Hi, my name is Bambi! Hihihi!" she whispered in an exaggerated sugary voice and extended her hand in a lady-like manner before exploding in a fit of laughter.
The story had made her laugh when Maria had told her how her boyfriend's brother seemed to always attract the weirdest girls or the stupidest, but knowing Max now made it even more funny. She had no problem imagining him at that moment. Too bad she wasn't there then.

"Oh dear lord… she told you that?" he groaned with a brief roll of his eyes while inwardly he was honestly quite relieved.

"Yep… we had a good laugh when she told me about your reaction!… now at least I understand why I didn't see you last month… I unfortunately arrived after the show!" she stopped long enough to answer but started all over again when she saw the strange face he made. The girl had obviously not left only good memories.

"Don't laugh Liz… that girl was… scary… I mean, how dumber can a girl be?… that one was Guinness material I'm telling you!" he playfully smacked her arm and scolded her.

"Yeah, well Maria had a bunch of stories about you that were even greater!" she wiggled her eyebrows at him, mischief dancing in her big brown eyes.

"I'm killing her… " he stated as gravely as possible though Liz could see how he was fighting hard to not smile himself.

"You probably should, yeah!" she declared holding back another giggle.
Truth was she didn't know that much about him since most of the time she had refused to hear anything about Maxwell Evans knowing perfectly where Maria intended to go with her little stories about him, but it was quite funny to make him squirm a little.
The only thing she was willing to remember about all she had been told about him at this instant anyway, was that he was Maxwell Evans, very single brother of Michael Evans. That was all she needed to know for now, and the rest she had every intention to discover it by herself.

"Look… not that I really mind in fact… but why would Maria be telling you stories about me?" he suddenly asked a little more seriously.
Like he said, he hadn't anything to hide, but he couldn't quite understand why Maria would tell her so much about him. Granted he was her boyfriend's little brother but that wasn't reason enough to go and let a perfect stranger know all about his life.
He just hoped she wasn't doing this with everyone and that there was at least one particular point about him that she had kept for herself.

"Well the thing is… there is not a single living soul's secret Maria knows about, that I don't know about too!" she clarified hoping that the knowledge wouldn't bother him. After all Maria had never said anything bad about him. Quite the opposite in fact.

"And that would be because…?" he inquired, an eyebrow raised.

"Maria is my best friend… she wouldn't be able to keep anything from me even if her life depended on it!" Liz finally elucidated for him.

'I'm really killing her!' Max thought immediately.
This girl was Maria's best friend but she had never thought about introducing them when he must have met every other crazy psycho friend of her. Was she nuts?

"Your… your best friend?… but I-I don't understand… how long have you known her?" he stuttered when he remembered Maria indeed talking about a friend she had known all her life, but he had never really paid any attention to her name. Could she be that friend?
On the other hand, he was sure he would remember if he had heard her calling her Liz. It wasn't such a common name, or at least he didn't know anyone else who went by it.

"Since I was three I think… Why?"

"I can't believe her… " Max muttered not realizing how harsh it could sound.

"Why? What's the problem?" Liz asked suddenly alarmed. She couldn't really see what could be wrong, but if his face was any indication he didn't seemed to be very pleased with the fact that she knew Maria that much.

"The problem is that for half and a year now she had been making those crazy matchmaking plans with me but it never crossed her mind to… " he started but almost immediately stopped mid-sentence when he realized what he was going to say and what that could mean. How was he supposed to finish this? 'It never crossed her mind to set me up with you when god, I'd have gone crazy just at the thought of going on a date with you' ? That would look just fine right, and not desperate at all! Yeah sure.
"I mean… she… I… never mind!" he finished lamely, feeling suddenly very self-conscious, but Liz surprised him by offering him a broad smile, and if she did feel he was embarrassed she didn't act like it.
He wasn't upset she realized, just disappointed. And she liked that, very much.

"Yeah… I see what you mean!… actually she tried!" she told him matter-of-factly like it was no real big deal, when inside she was quivering just thinking that he could have really wanted to go out with her if Maria had really tried to set them up together.
In actual fact, technically she had and more times than Liz was willing to remember, but it had just never happened as she had planned it. And today when Maria had suggested it again Liz had all but dismissed her once more. What a stupid fool, too bad she couldn't kick her own ass because she certainly deserved it.
Then, her best friend's description of him wasn't anything close to the reality.
Maria had told her more than once that he was 'really not bad' but this man was way more than that. He was hot, gorgeous, amazing, mouth-watering, well you got the drift, but 'really not bad' just seemed too simple to describe him. Besides he didn't look so shy either. At least he wasn't with her.
But honestly she didn't think that it would be a problem even if he was. Sure like she had reminded Maria, she didn't usually go for shy guy but with this one she would definitely make all the exceptions to the rules.

"She did?" Max questioned, all of a sudden feeling all the hopes he could have had slowly vanishing. If she had, he hadn't heard about it, so that had to mean that Liz had refused right away, not even given them a chance. Maybe she hadn't liked what she had learned about him and had concluded that he would not be her type. Why bother then?

"She tried from time to time… inviting me when she was inviting you too… but for some strange reason it never could happen… I mean either I was the one canceling or you were… " Liz said remembering again how many times Maria had indeed invited her for dinner or something else, revealing that Maxwell would be there too and that she would finally met him but with them, nothing had ever gone according to Maria's plans. Whenever she came, he didn't and whenever he did, she had always something popping up at the last minute and she couldn't make it. "Besides… no offense but I thought that you looked more like Michael… and well let's just say that I'm not always particularly thrilled by his personality. " she finished with a laugh.
She wasn't particularly fond of Michael's looks either, not that he needed him to know that, but the brother on the other side was definitely more her type. She wouldn't mind having him for breakfast if she had the chance.
Oh god, that was it! She was starting to think like Maria.

"Well… you couldn't have been more wrong… I mean… Michael and I have to be as different as night and day!" Max chuckled too, finally relaxing again.
The only thing they had in common Max thought sometimes was their family's name, and even that he hadn't always been sure. When he was little he liked to say that their parents had lost the real Michael somewhere during one of those famous trips the family used to often make when they were younger, and had come back with someone who looked like him but wasn't his brother. That would have explained a lot of things according to Max though Michael used to say the same thing about him, but in the end the two really loved each other and that was the most important right?

"If I had known." Liz thought, persuaded that she hadn't said that aloud but when she heard Max's next question she knew for sure she indeed did.

"Would it have made any difference?" Max softly asked her, almost positive that she hadn't meant for him to hear her.
Yeah if he had known too. He would certainly have been in for anything Michael and Maria had proposed him to do, or at least he would have made more efforts when he hadn't really felt like going anywhere and had ended up canceling their rendezvous altogether without real reasons.
What an idiot, he thought. All this time wasted on meaningless dates organized by Maria -because he had never been able to make it to one arranged with Liz, but boy if he had had to go through others before rebelling- when he could have spent all this time with the most beautiful and captivating girl he had ever met.
The strange thing was that Maria had never mentioned that she wanted him to meet her best friend. Why? Was she afraid that he would think that being her best friend she had to be just as crazy if not more than Maria could be and he would have refused right away? Or was it just after one of his fits about how he hated it when she tried to play matchmaker and she had decided it would be easier to not tell him until the last moment?
He was so concentrated on trying to find answers to all his questions that he nearly missed Liz's own reply.

"I think it would have, yeah!" she confessed just as softly.

"Well, it's up to us to make up for all the time we wasted!" he stated not really realizing what he was implying.

Liz didn't answer to that, not really knowing what to say, so instead she just smiled and eyed the keys he had been looking for and apparently found now and followed him as he moved again along the hall.
She realized where he was taking her now right away, but she just couldn't see what he wanted to do there. Or better she preferred to not think about what they could do there, not wanting to analyze what it would mean and what she would definitively want to do too.
She didn't have too much time to really question all that though, since only had they both crossed the door that they were stopped dead in their tracks.

"Oh, dear Lord… Michael is going to throw a fit when he sees this room." Liz exclaimed horrified as they entered Maria and Michael's guestroom and she saw the carnage.
If Max didn't do it first, she was going to kill her friend.

"What happened here? An hurricane?" Max joked looking with wide-opened eyes to the amount of clothes thrown haphazardly on the king seized bed.

"No, no… I… you know how girls are, right? So…uh… Maria and I, we kind of had a fashion session here this afternoon… trying clothes and all… you know… see what we'd wear for tonight… it's really great to have a shop at your disposal per say… it gives you a lot of choice…but I guess we got a little carried away… and well SHE was supposed to put everything away… " she tried to explain, quickly turning her back to him as she started to pick up the clothes and hoped he wouldn't see how embarrassed she was. She just prayed that he wouldn't look too closely and wouldn't see some of the outfits Maria had chosen for them because she really didn't want him to have the wrong idea.
Unfortunately, God didn't seem to be on her side at that moment because Max had already found something very interesting among the pill and he couldn't help teasing her.

"Man, I'd pay to see you in this!" she heard him say and when she turned to him her eyes nearly bulged out of her head when she realized he was holding the black dress Maria had made her try and that… 'screamed too many things'.
She saw him wiggling his eyebrows suggestively and she finally couldn't help but smile herself at the show he was making, waving the dress in front of her and then raising it high above each time she tried to reach for it. Boy, it sucked to be so short.

"You're such a guy… give me that!" she blushed as she eventually snatched the garment from his hands. Of course she appreciated what seemed to be a compliment, but she couldn’t help wondering if he could really mean it. Did it mean that he really thought that she would look good in it or was it just a line?

"More seriously… I like what you're wearing by the way!" Max swallowed his next teasing reply and complimented her instead when he noticed that he was obviously making her feel a little uncomfortable.
But she was really cute when she blushed he thought with a smile, maybe he could try that again later.

"Oh, uh… thank you… it comes from the shop too." she informed him while she finished to put some of the clothes back on their hangers and did her best to stay calm.
Maria had said she would take care of that, why hadn't she seen this coming then, huh? God, the girl could be so infuriating sometimes, but she had another thing coming if she thought that she was going to be the one to take everything back to the store and organized the whole lot again.
She quickly hung everything on the wardrobe door and turned around to see him with two blankets in the hands now.
What did he want to do with that she wondered, and where was he taking her to need them to begin with?

"From Maria's shop?… I mean from where she works right!" Max inquired after having found what he had been searching for, here too.

"Yeah… Campbell's… it's mine actually." Liz revealed, realizing that she had talked about the boutique like he was supposed to know about it, but Max wasn't really surprised this time. He had made the connection just a split second before she had said it was hers. Maria always said she had a shop, but he knew she wasn't really the main owner.

"Really? So you're…" he stepped closer and started nonetheless, wanting her to confirm what he suspected.

"Liz Campbell, yes… Elizabeth in fact but I've never really liked it!" Liz said, scrunching up her nose at the mention of her full name.

"Well, Liz Campbell… It's a pleasure spending this night with you." Max suddenly said extending his hand to her, which she took gladly of course, and then twirled her around before pushing her toward the door and adding, his tone more conspiratorial. "Let's go now… I think we have everything we need."

Chapter 5.a

Maria stomped through the living room pissed beyond belief.
Her quality time with Michael had run short when some of his buddies had cornered him on their way to the first floor bathroom, and Michael had almost instantly forgotten about where they were supposed to go and what they were supposed to do. And all for what? That stupid game again.
How many times had she already seen Michael in that position she didn't know anymore, but one of this day she was really going to throw a tantrum and give him a piece of her mind. Like downing a pitcher of beer in one, without breathing, just to prove who was able to hold their drinks better was more important than spending some time with her. Of course Michael only participated because he knew he was usually the one who won that game, but at what price? Most of the rest of the night he didn't even know what he was doing anymore after that, and by the new day he didn't even remember his own name or where he was. She knew that the purpose of those parties was to have fun, but this was not exactly her idea of a good time. And besides, why couldn't he do like anyone else here and dance, instead of getting himself totally smashed to enjoy himself, huh?

After having avoided most of the people who wanted to talk to her, she took the direction of the kitchen but cringed and nearly stopped on her way when she heard Michael's almost barbaric cry echoing through the hall, the sure sign that he had obviously won the first round. Since they didn't stop until at least one of the participants rolled under the table, this was only the beginning unfortunately, she reminded herself.
God, she would really have to make him pay for that later.

As she entered the room the smile provisionally returned to her lips when she saw the scene in front of her.
Well, at least some people were having fun tonight even if she wasn't, she thought as she heard Liz giggle at something Max was telling her.
She first contemplated turning around and leaving them alone to do whatever it was they were doing but their next move intrigued her, and finally curiosity getting the better of her she stepped fully into the kitchen.

"Hey, hey… where are you two going?" she called out to them when she saw them ready to exit the house through the back door.
What were those two up to? she wondered as they tried to sneak away together.

"I don't know!" Liz turned around and quickly answered, trying to hold back another round of giggles.
She wasn't really lying since she actually didn't know where Max was taking her, but even if she had known she didn't really think she would be sharing this piece of information with Maria for all that.
Maybe it was stupid but she liked the idea of sharing something special with Max, something only the two of them would know about. Besides she kind of liked all the mystery too. There was something thrilling about not knowing where they were going or what Max had in store for her and she didn't really want Maria to ruin the moment.

"How's that you don't know? Where are you going?" Maria insisted her gaze traveling back and forth between Liz who was looking at her with something in her eyes she wasn't sure she recognized and Max who just gave her a slight shrug and an all too innocent smile.
Yep, Maria thought, those two, whatever they had in mind, were up to something and obviously wanted to be left alone.

"Ask this guy… he's the one who knows!" Liz replied matter-of-factly and without thinking, but almost instantly suspected afterwards what would be Maria's reaction to such an elusive response.
Her friend usually liked to receive straight answers to her questions and not being one to like being kept in the dark, Liz only had to take one look at her now to know hers hadn't satisfied her at all.
However it was only when she saw the shocked expression on Maria's face that she really realized how her words could be taken, and a little mischievous smile appearing on her lips she decided to play on it.

"Thi-This guy… do you mean you don't know who he is?" Maria stuttered, her eyes as big as saucers at Liz's choice of words.
Clearly she couldn't be implying that she didn't even know that guy or hadn't even bother to ask him who he was.
What the hell was happening here? Maria wondered, trying to come up with a logical explanation for Liz's sudden strange and uncharacteristic behavior.

"Should I?" Liz asked an eyebrow raised, feigning to not understand what was going on in Maria's mind, when anyone would have been able to see how the wheels were already turning on her head.

Of course she had to be wondering how, or maybe even if, it was indeed possible for Liz to not know who she was with or that he was Michael's brother, the same brother who they had talked about countless times, the guy Liz had claimed so many times that she didn't want to have anything to do with.

Suddenly feeling very impish, Liz knew perfectly what she had to do or say to provoke the right reaction in her friend. She was going to go crazy in no time. Yes, it was mean she knew, but sometimes Maria needed to be taught a little lesson. Curiosity killed the cat after all.

"Of course you should… have you not realized it yet?… He's… "Maria started pointing an agitated finger at Max, but before she could get all the words out Liz stepped closer to her and stopped her by placing one of hers on her lips.

"Look… it doesn't really matter in fact… I'm just going to go out there and have my ways with him… and then maybe just go and have a nice sleep afterwards… I might need it… have you looked at him? I'm sure he's going to wear me out… but really it's no big deal, you see!" she whispered suggestively, shocking the hell out of Maria who couldn't believe that Liz would really consider doing what she was implying with a perfect stranger. That didn't sound like Liz at all.
Okay, who was this girl, and what had she done with her best friend?

"Are you drunk Liz? Or…oh god, are you serious?" Maria exclaimed, so horrified that her jaw nearly hit the floor.

She had to be kidding, right? Even if she couldn't deny that Max could definitely be the kind of guy women wouldn't have any problems considering having a quickie with even if they didn't know the first thing about him or had actually only just met him, it doesn't mean that Liz was that type of girls. At least not the Liz she thought she knew.

Besides, when she had seen them together, looking so at ease with one another she had imagined, even hoped to be honest that they would really hit it off and contemplate going on dates, learning more about each other and so on and so forth, but nothing more than maybe a few kisses for tonight. A little make out session maybe yes, but getting the whole show on the road not even an hour after their first words definitely not. This wasn't right.

"Maybe!" Liz just answered, doing her best to hold back her laughter, and then she quickly turned to Max before Maria could see the truth on her face.
To say that she left a very dumbfounded friend behind her would be way under the truth but it felt good to be the one to play the little tricks for once. Usually she was the one to suffer the other girl's jokes, it was only fair that for once she was able to turn the tables on her.

"See you 'Ria!" she concluded at last as at the same time she reached out to take Max's hand in hers, signaling him that it was time for them to leave, whether Maria was happy with it or not.

Max looked down at their entwined fingers and smiled softly at how well Liz's hand fitted in his. It could be a detail for many, but he still couldn't get past the fact that she could act so naturally around him or seem so at ease. Or even that he could feel that way with someone he had only met. But it felt really right.

"Bye!" he added naturally and with another smile, not having heard the whole conversation since he had stood a little further from the two girls, and therefore not realizing that his nonchalance was only helping Liz's little ploy.

He briefly wondered nonetheless if Maria had informed Liz that he had been almost drooling all over himself before going to talk to her, but the one who really looked shell-shocked right now seemed to be Maria and not Liz, therefore he could only assume that that wasn't what they had been talking about, though he had no doubt that Liz would learn about it sooner or later. He trusted Maria enough to give her every little single detail about that as soon as they would be the two alone.
Anyway, if really he had too, he would worry about that later, now he didn't even want to think about it.

"Uh… HAVE FUN!" Maria threw to their departing forms, cringing afterwards at the words as she said them and wishing the mental pictures of Max and Liz going at it hot and heavy to go away from her mind.
She was by no means a prude of course, but there were some things she would better not imagine happening in her house, or in her garden actually, or wherever those two were heading. And moreover when it was her best friend and her near brother in law she was picturing.

Of course Liz was big enough to make her own decisions too and if she wanted to have sex with a perfect stranger without trying to know him first, who was she to tell her not to, the first time she had had sex with Michael herself, they hadn't even bothered to ask each other for last names, but she didn't want Liz to act on an impulse and regret it afterwards.

Michael. Of course, she needed to find Michael and tell him that his brother was perverting her best friend and that he had to intervene before it was too late, or she would kick his ass otherwise. And since she was already pissed with him, it wouldn't be pretty, she thought as she marched back to where she had left him.

Yeah, it was all Max's doing, that was the only thing she could come up with to explain what she had just heard and witnessed: Liz was the innocent one in this story, and Max was the guy, so everything had to be his fault. Somehow, she didn't even want to know how, he had managed to put a spell on Liz, to brainwash her even and she wasn't thinking clearly anymore.

But wait… Max was just as innocent if not even more than Liz herself, so all this didn't make any sense. Besides, now that she thought about it, what was Max doing with cherry colas and junk food if they were really going to do what Liz had said they were going to? It didn't add up at all. That kind of plan usually called for Champagne and strawberries, whipped cream even if you wanted to be a little wicked but not for soda and some potatoes-chips.

Oh the little witch! she all of a sudden exclaimed when she finally understood that her friend, her sweet and usually so chaste best friend, had just played her shamelessly and she had just jumped head first right into it, coming to the exact conclusion Liz wanted her to.
Oh man, she was sooo dead. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, they say, well Liz Campbell wouldn't see it coming, but she would pay for that trick.

As they stepped outside Max stopped and looked at Liz with an awestruck expression, sure that he had missed something, if only because Liz looked ready to roll on the floor any second. Obviously something was very funny, but he couldn't see what yet.

"Okay… what did you tell her to leave her almost speechless?" he asked curiously as soon as they were out of ear shot.
Now that he had time to ponder it, this had to be one of the only times he had seen Maria Deluca being unable to come up with a good retort and that was definitely unexpected. And maybe he should hang around Liz more often from now on, because she certainly could come in handy with that ability.
Yeah, sure, like he needed that to want to do so anyways.

"Nothing I can tell you without ruining my reputation!" Liz told him with a wink and then exploded in a throaty laughter, leaving Max wordless himself for a few seconds.

Man, he loved this girl! he almost instantly thought.
Wait, no… not like in love 'love', right? He couldn't, could he?
He liked her yes, a lot actually, but he was certainly not falling in love already. He couldn't, not so soon, not when he hadn't even spent a whole day with her . It was scientifically impossible, he tried to reason with himself just as quickly as the thoughts entered his mind.

Yeah, like love had anything to do with sciences, or reason, or anything like that.
You didn't decide when or with whom. You didn't choose to fall in love. It just happened, it came crashing into you. Overwhelming, powerful, uncontrollable and totally unexpected.

But you could choose to follow your heart, to listen to it, and to see where it decided to take you, and what was sure was that his heart right now was certainly trying to tell him something. It sped out of control whenever she was near him. It skipped a beat whenever she looked or smiled up at him. It literally stopped whenever she touched him. So whatever its message was, it clearly was directed to her.
His heart was calling to her, and what could he do if not follow it.

"Oh… well, you'll have to teach me that trick… I could use it!" Max quickly decided to dismiss his previous thoughts and tried to act casually again.

He would take the time to really think about his feelings for her later, when he would be alone and she wouldn't be there anymore to trouble him so much. Right now if he just looked at her, he could perfectly picture himself falling totally and madly in love with her, and he wouldn't be really objective then.

"Maybe… if you behave, I will!" Liz teased as she followed him blindly, not realizing where they were going at first.

But then they crossed Maria and Michael's garden and Liz instantly opened big stunned eyes when she saw where they had stopped and what that key he had been looking for before was supposed to open.

The pool? He wanted them to go to the pool?
Granted Michael had had it covered a few months ago to be able to enjoy it in winter too and all, but she didn't really felt like going for a swim. Though of course she couldn't deny either that the idea of seeing Max with less clothes on was definitely tempting.
But wait, wait here… what was she thinking?… he couldn't take them to the pool, that wouldn't do at all, she wasn't equipped to go swimming!

"Max Evans I don't think I know you enough to go skinny dipping with you if that's what you thought!" she joked lamely, trying to keep the edge off her voice and not show him how the idea was actually wreaking havoc on her senses.
God just imagining his perfect body glistening with droplets of water was enough to drive her completely insane. So insane that she nearly moaned out loud in fact.

"Huh?… oh no, no… that was the furthest thing from my mind, don't worry!" Max quickly corrected her assumptions as he opened the door in front of him.
But maybe it was too quickly actually because the next thing he heard was a soft 'oh' coming from Liz.
Wait a minute, did she sound… disappointed?
Because if she was, believe it, he could change that in a second. It wouldn't take him longer than that to get rid of his clothes, if that was what she wanted.
Oh god, what was he thinking?
As appealing as the idea of going skinny dipping with her was, he would scare her more than anything if she just saw in what state that simple thought could make him.

"But maybe next time?… or in a few hours… when you know me better then!" he teased and winked at her in the end, not quite believing himself afterwards that he, Maxwell Evans, honorary member of the 'I've never made love' club could be so bold and have suggested such a thing.
It was clear in his mind that he would content himself with just swimming next to her, if he had the opportunity, but maybe he shouldn't picture the scene too much for all that or the only thing he would end doing would be to really embarrass himself in front of her. It was already a chance that his shirt was out of his pants and covered part of his… obvious embarrassment, he didn't need to add more to it, did he?

"That would need some convincing, but why not!" Liz answered just as teasingly seeing what he was trying to do, but she had to do her best to stop imagining herself how Max would actually look like all naked nonetheless.

As they entered the covered place Max moved to a switchgear cubicle on his left and turned on some lights. It wasn't very bright inside though since he only lit up the pool spots but it was enough for them to see each other, and certainly enough for what he had planned.

He then inserted a second key in a latch-lock on the cubicle and all of a sudden the roof started to open above them, revealing the sky to their eyes.
Liz gasped at the sight, not knowing until now that it could be removed and brought a hand to her mouth.
Michael and Maria had decided not so long ago to cover the pool because according to them it was a shame to not be able to use it in winter, when in summer they had the beach anyway if they wanted to go and take a sun bath, but now she realized that they had thought about everything in the end. If the top could move, they could use it the same in summer, she reflected.

But that was only until she paid a little more attention and noticed that there was still something that separated them from the outside world. Where the metallic roof was before, she saw now another one, only this one was completely transparent, giving her the impression that they were surrounded by a gigantic bubble of glass. The sight was simply breathtaking, and she briefly wondered why Maria had never shared this with her, but at least now she understood why she had said she had seen all kind of stars the last time Michael had taken her for some quality time in the pool. She had been sure back then that there had been more to Maria's words than what she had really said, and now the proof was just above her.

The stars were sparkling in the sky but being a winter night it was also pretty covered and Max wasn't finally sure if he would be able to go along with his plan. He had meant to show her the different constellations but it looked like it would be kind of difficult tonight after all.

"Max… this is unbelievable!" Liz whispered in awe, as if she was afraid all the magic would disappear if she spoke too loudly. The sky, the stars, and the reflection of the water and the pool spots in the bubble roof gave such a surreal glow to the whole scene, it was amazing to see. "Do you come here often?"

"Whenever I feel the need!" Max answered quite cryptically at first, but when he saw her looking at him a little puzzled he went on. "It's so peaceful here… whenever I want to get away from the world, I come and stay here for hours… just looking at the sky!"

Michael had always know of his passion for astronomy and at first Max had suspected that he had made the rearrangement partly for him, but Michael had always denied it, claiming that it was for his own pleasure he had done it and that Max wasn't the only one in the family who liked staring at the stars and just forget about the rest.
However it was clear to him that he used the place quite more often than Michael or Maria did it themselves, or at least for that purpose. Knowing them they surely had to spend more time going at it in the pool than looking up at the stars. Whatever, he was just glad that Michael let him come whenever he wanted and that he could enjoy the view, at least until recently.
He was surprised though that Liz, being Maria's best friend, didn't know about the changes, but maybe she had her own pool and therefore hadn't cared about what Michael and Maria could do with theirs. Besides, if you weren't told you had no way to know exactly what those changes consisted in, because not anyone covered their pool but equipped it with an hydraulic system that allowed you to open the roof.
Anyway, he would maybe question her about that later but first, it was time to get settled.

"What do you have in mind Max Evans?" Liz inquired as he pulled two lounge chairs near the water but very close to one another, and then grabbed one of the blanket and wrapped it around her form.
As he did she once more had to catch herself and not moan or sigh when he touched her, but god if it was difficult. He was so close to her, his forehead almost against hers as he stared into her eyes with that sexy smile of his, that she was ready to faint, and she would probably have if he wasn't holding her. It really shouldn't be permitted to be that irresistible.

"Well, if you don't have figured it out yet, we're stargazing my lady… but stay with this on otherwise you're gonna freeze." he revealed as he helped her sit down, now warmly draped in the blanket.

Stargazing was usually a great idea, but lately Michael had been having some problems with the pool heating, that was why the pool hadn't been used in a while or why he hadn't come himself so frequently, but as long as they kept those warm blankets on they would be alright.

Once he had taken care of that, he went back to where he had left the pack of cherry colas and the Doritos and Barbecue Lays and came back to take his place near her, almost immediately offering her a drink and opening one of the junk food bags.
He didn't pay attention to Liz at that moment but if he had he would certainly not have understood why she was smiling as she saw him approaching her again or why she was shaking her head slightly.

God, she could be so clueless sometimes. The moment he had opened the fridge like he knew perfectly what he would find in there, she could have figured out who he was if she had just concentrated enough on that point.
'The cherry cola' should have been a dead give away, really. It was a wonder she had let it pass. She couldn't even count anymore how many times Maria had told her that between her and Max she should have bought stock options in the firm and she would be a millionaire by now only with all the two of them could drink of that soda, and yet she hadn't seen a thing at that moment.
Well, if they didn't have anything else in common, at least she knew that they liked to drink the same stuff. One had to begin somewhere, right?

Once they were finally both settled down comfortably, eating and drinking occasionally, Max started to point at the shining stars above them, showing her the different constellations that were visible from where they were and Liz listened attentively, marveling at this side of Max.

From time to time she adverted her gaze from the sky and looked at him, amazed at the picture he made. His whole face seemed to light up as he spoke about a subject he obviously knew quite a well, or was dear to him, and she swore she could almost see all the stars reflected in his eyes as he enumerated them to her or listed the different constellations. They seemed to sparkle just as brightly as the million little brilliant points on the sky.
God, she couldn't even tell herself anymore what sight was more mind-blowing: Max Evans or the stars.

"What?" Max interrupted her thoughts unexpectedly when he saw her looking at him instead of what he was indicating to her.

"Oh… nothing… I… " Liz stammered, blushing profusely at having been caught staring at him.
She could just thank God that it was probably dark enough for him to not notice, otherwise she didn't know what he would think of her. After a brief hesitancy she then lifted up her head again and that was when she understood why he had obviously stopped. "Looks like it's clouding over!" she said with what looked like a disappointed pout.

"That's what I just said!" Max chuckled and Liz blushed even more if that was possible when she realized that he had really been talking to her and she hadn't even heard him.

"Oh… sorry!" Liz apologized of course but quickly realized that Max didn't seem to mind her lack of concentration.

"So… tell me about you." he asked instead, turning more to her to show her she had his complete attention now.
The stars could wait. What he could learn about her now meant a lot more to him than something he had already seen a thousand times before anyway. Besides, their beauty even seemed to pale now that he had something even more beautiful to compare them to.

"What do you want to know?" Liz demanded in return not really knowing where to start or what she should tell him about her life. She didn't want to bore him to death, after all her life wasn't that passionate or interesting.

The only word that came to Max's mind at that moment was 'Everything' of course but he knew he couldn't very well tell her that. What would she think if she knew that he could perfectly spend the rest of this night, the rest of his life even, getting to know her, learning everything there was to know about Elizabeth Campbell. Or that he wanted to know about every little single detail of her life. What made her smile, what made her laugh, what she liked, what she didn't, what one had to do to have her look at him with love shining in her eyes. Yes, there was so much he wanted to know about her.

"Anything you're willing to reveal." he replied instead however, knowing that that was the only answer he could give that would make her feel comfortable enough to want to share herself with him.

Liz sighed slightly nonetheless, like what he was asking her was yet too complicated and Max couldn’t help but smile, as he leant back some more on his lounge chair and waited for her to start.

She kept the information quite general at first, going over where she was born, what she liked, where she worked even if he already knew it by now, and things like that. What she liked to do when she had free time or a day off, where she liked to go then, she even told him about her favorite color, her favorite movies, meals etc, but nothing really very personal. Not that she didn't want to, but she just wasn't sure he wanted to really hear about all the little things that made her life.
How wrong she was!

"So you've always lived in LA!" Max probed some more after a moment and when he realized that she seemed to have gone over everything she could think about.

"My whole life!" Liz responded matter-of-factly, knowing that if she had had a choice in the matter she would certainly not have chosen Los Angeles to make a life in.
She didn't really like big cities and had never understood why her mother was so adamant to stay and live in this town, but for the first time she found herself not regretting her decision to stay herself even after her mother's death. She would have never met Max if she had left Los Angeles like she had wanted to at the beginning, and that would have really been a shame. Now, with Maria, he was certainly a good reason to not move. The best in fact, if what he made her feel was any proof.

Then where have you been all mine was Max's first thought when he heard her answer.
It made it all the more frustrating to not have met her sooner when he now knew that she had been there all the time, living and growing up in the same town, perhaps going to the same places and sharing the same friends. But he guessed that wasn't the point anymore: he couldn't change the past anyway, what was really important now was that he didn't let her go now that he had found her.

He went on with a few other questions, like how long she had known Michael and he almost cringed when she told him that she knew him from the very first day he had come to her shop and had met Maria.
He knew the story behind Michael and Maria's first encounter of course, the way Michael had come barging into the shop because he needed to find a birthday present for his ex-girlfriend, -well, ex once he had met Maria-, since he was of course late, and after fighting for over half an hour with Maria because nothing she was showing him was what he was looking for, he had told her she was hot when she was pissed and had invited her to dinner, and from that point it didn't take a genius to imagine what had happened when they had been alone, right?, but what really made him want to strangle himself was that Michael had asked him to come with him that day since he was home for a visit but he had refused saying that he had too much to study.
But now that he realized what could have been, he knew what a mistake he had made. Because no studies were worth missing Liz and spending a year and an half without her, and he couldn't help but ask himself all kind of questions.

Where would they be now if he had gone with Michael and had met her that day?
Would they have talked?
Would he have dared ask her out like his brother had done with Maria?
Would she have affected him just as much as she did the first time he had laid eyes on her tonight? He was almost positive that she would have. She was just too beautiful for him to ignore her, now, then, or at any other time of his life he could have met her.
Would they be living together? Or married by now, maybe expecting a child even?
He didn't know but in any case, he could perfectly see the incredible waste of time.

Chapter 5b

"What's the story with that guy inside?" Max inquired all of a sudden when he remembered him, curious to know if he was some ex-boyfriend or someone who had had some importance in her life at some point.
Maybe he was, maybe she had been with that man all this time she could have been with him if he had taken the right decision back then. But if she told him he indeed was, he was going to even less like that Sean guy, believe it.

"Not much… he's Maria cousin actually…" Liz revealed and was surprised to see that apparently he hadn't made the connection himself. "We went on a date once… more because I wanted him to leave me alone after that than because I was really interested, but let's just say… I don't wish to my worst enemy to go on a date with Sean Deluca… that must have been the most horrible moment of my life!"

"That bad? … C'mon what could he have done?" Max wondered out loud, not understanding how any man could screw up a date with someone like Liz.
He for one knew that he would only do his best to make all her dreams come true if he had the opportunity to go on a real date with her. That someone could do something that could make her uncomfortable or not spend the best night of her life was totally unconceivable to him. Liz really deserved the best, he knew that even after only having spent a few minutes with her, if Sean Deluca had not understood that, he was even more stupid than what Max had first assumed. And to say that he was related to Maria. Unbelievable.

"Believe me Max… you don't even want to know… this guy brings disgrace upon the whole male population… thank God I know not every man is like Sean Deluca otherwise I wouldn't go on a date ever again!" she said and rolled her eyes just at the memory. It would take her half a lifetime to forget about that disaster.

"Okay… I'm just glad he didn't put you off men definitely!" Max laughed just imagining what Sean could have done for Liz to be still almost traumatized by the experience. He could almost swear he had even seen her slightly shudder when she was relating it.
Therefore seeing that maybe they should change the subject if he didn't want her to become physically sick just at the thought of Sean, he asked her about something else he wanted to know. "You live here with your parents?"

"No!" Liz replied succinctly. She hadn't seen this one coming, but suddenly she was not liking the turn this was taking.

That was the part of her life she didn't like to talk about. She had seen too many times the same expression in the people's faces when she revealed that piece of information. She didn't want to see it in Max's eyes too.

"Oh… don't they live in Los Angeles?" Max continued, not realizing that was certainly the question that could make Liz quite uncomfortable.

"Actually… I've never even known my dad… my mom said he died in a car accident when she was pregnant…" she finally admitted after having first taken a sip of her cherry cola and then a deep breath.
After all Max couldn't know that this was a delicate topic for her, and she knew herself that he hadn't meant to hurt her in any way by bringing it up. Beside, strangely it wasn't so hard to talk about it with him, contrary to what she could have thought. Or at least not as hard as she had thought at first finally.

"God… that must have been really hard!" Max exclaimed before he could stop himself, regretting immediately to have opened his big mouth.

What an idiot, why had he talked about that?
Of course, he and his father didn't really get along to say the least but he couldn't really imagine growing up without a father figure, or without having even known him. Therefore he could only assume how hard it must have been for Liz to have to go through this. Even if she was trying to mask it, he could clearly see the pain shimmering in her beautiful doe eyes and he cursed himself for being the one to have put it there now.

"Not really… I mean I didn't really miss him either, I guess I just got used to be living with my mom only… besides… it's not like I lacked for anything… I mean my mom provided for everything, I could always have anything I wanted, I just had to say the word… I think it was her way of compensating for what she really couldn't give me… but well, all in all I had a really great life even without a father figure…" Liz told him, trying to keep her tone quite indifferent.

The truth was that she had often wondered what it would have been like to have a dad, or if she would have been any different from what she was now, maybe have a different personality, whatever, if she had known him, but like she had just said, she couldn't really miss someone she had never known.

She didn't even know what he looked like, since apparently her mother and him hadn't really been together-together when she had been conceived, and though he had accepted to take responsibility for his actions and her mother had agreed to marry him, she hadn't had any picture of him to show Liz. They hadn't had time to reach that stage, where you exchanged pictures of yourself with your beloved, or took a few with him or her. But sometimes Liz thought it was better this way anyway. It allowed her to picture him just like she wanted him to be even if it could sound stupid. In her mind, her father looked a lot like her, and he had loved her from the very first moment he had known about her existence.

In the middle of her tirade she looked up and saw Max looking back and smiling at her, and she couldn't help but blush. Woow, who would have thought she could say so much about her family to an almost complete stranger and in their first moment together.

"And I think I'm rambling so I'll just shut up." she finished quickly when she met Max's intense gaze and she shyly lowered her head. Nope, she really couldn't believe she was telling all that to someone she hadn't even known for a whole day.

"No, no, go on… I absolutely don't mind!" Max urged her to continue, realizing how much he liked the sound of her voice, how much he liked to hear her talk, even if the topic wasn't really of the most heartening. But honestly, she could be talking to him about earthworms or ants, or anything else anyone would find gross or boring, and he knew he would find her just as fascinating.

"Well… I had finished anyway…" Liz just concluded before reaching for the Doritos. Anything to not let herself drown in his eyes again.
God when he looked at her like that she just felt like melting inside.

"You talked about your mother in past tense, does that mean…" he ventured carefully, wondering if there wasn't even more to the sadness he had detected in her eyes than what he had first thought.
He was almost afraid to ask, afraid to learn that she could be all alone in this life, but he needed to know, just to be sure he wouldn't say something some day that could hurt her even more than having to talk about it right now.

"Yeah… she died two years ago… cancer… totally unexpected and undetected… before we… before she could do anything it was over!" Liz revealed, not daring to look up to see his reaction to this piece of information.
Yet even if it was hard to talk about it, all in all, she knew it was probably better if they had it out in the open already. Once that done, there wouldn't be anything else she would be afraid to tell him.

"Oh Liz… I'm sorry!" Max sympathized, almost writhing on his chair with the urge to reach out to her and comfort her.
Even though he had almost been sure that that was what he was going to hear, it hadn't prepared him for the truth nonetheless. He didn't even know what he could say, what he could do to make her feel better.

"Why? It wasn't your fault…" Liz shrugged slightly and responded almost indifferently. All he had done was ask, what happened to her mother wasn't anything he could have caused or even changed.

"No, but…" Max tried to explain her what he felt, what he wanted to tell her but his sentence was cut off by Liz's next answer.

"It's funny how people always say the same when they are told about something like that… like they have something to do with it, or they somehow feel responsible for it… you don't have to feel sorry for me Max… I don't feel like that myself… I mean, of course sometimes it's really hard, and I miss her dearly, but there is nothing I could have done back then, just like there's nothing I can do about it right now, or that you can for that matter. So…" she told him, finally looking him up in the eyes again.

She wanted to make sure he understood that she meant every word she said.
She didn't want him to feel sorry for her. At all. And yet as she gazed into his eyes, she saw something she hadn't seen in anyone else's when they had learnt the truth. She didn't see the pity she excepted to find in them, she saw pain. Almost like a reflection of her own. Like just knowing that she could have been hurt by her mother's death was hurting him too. And it took her breath away. That a man who didn't know her could feel this way was just amazing to her, but it proved her again just how special and exceptional Max Evans was.

However she didn't have time to really analyze what it meant since almost immediately, like he thought that his reaction could embarrass her or make her feel self-conscious, he tried to mask it and tried to act casually again.

"Hmm… okay…" Max said, deciding to not dwell any longer on the matter. "My turn then… what would you like to know about the boring life of Maxwell Evans?" he continued a little too cheerfully after a short silence, obviously trying to ease the growing tension.
It really hadn't meant to make her feel uncomfortable or anything else, it was just that when it came to her he really wanted to know everything, but maybe he had taken this too far by asking such personal questions. Of course she didn't look upset or angry or anything, - if anything she looked like she was thinking about something completely different and had spaced out for a moment even if he couldn't understand why? - but he didn't want their moment together to run short because he had brought back bad or painful memories to her mind.

"Hmm I don't know… maybe how old you are to begin with?" Liz followed with a smile, grateful for what he was attempting to do.
If they had a future together, which Liz could honestly say she was considering more and more whether it was as good friends or more, they would have all the time to talk about that matter again or anything more depressing about their life, right now they should better keep things light she realized.

"How old do you think I am?" Max raised an eyebrow at her and asked, wanting to see how she saw him.
Did he look older than he was? he didn't think so, but who knew how people could perceive him.

Liz looked at him smiling, thinking that it was actually a good question, only she almost was sure of the answer for that one.

"I know that you're younger than Michael… and I'm sure that you're older than me so… I'd say 24, maybe 25!"

"You're good… I'm 25!… then I guess you're not even 24 yourself, are you?" Max asked her right away, suddenly wondering himself how old she could be.
He hadn't given it second thoughts at first, hadn't even asked her before when she hadn't told him since he had just assumed that she was as old as he was or as old as Maria, but now that she was pointing this out he couldn't help wondering if she wasn't even younger than he had first thought.

It would be really the cruelest of the jokes if she told him that she wasn't even 18!
God, what was he thinking? Of course she was at least 18, she was obviously living alone, she ran her own business, and she was best friend with Maria and had grown up with her, since they were three.
But wait, had she said she knew Maria since she was three or since they both were. What if Maria had been already much older when they had met. Oh Lord, he was being so totally ridiculous.

"Not yet… I'll be 24 in May." Liz informed him and ended his sudden nightmare before he could conjure up other crazy ideas.

"Oh…" was all Max could say.
23 was great, wasn't it? She was barely younger than he was. What were two years anyway? Moreover when it was the guy who was older. Yeah, it was really great!

"You said you're a lawyer, right?… where did you study Law then?" Liz went on like nothing had happened, and not noticing how Max seemed to breathe normally again.

"Harvard!" he just replied like it was no big deal.
And actually for him it wasn't. He had only gone there because that was where his father had wanted him to go. If he had had a say in it he would have stayed in Los Angeles and that would have suited him just fine. But his father wasn't really the type to listen to anyone's opinions but his, so Harvard it had been.

"Wow… Harvard Law School, that's great… really great!" Liz exclaimed clearly impressed. She had figured out already that he was clever, but Harvard, that was really remarkable.

"Yeah I guess it is indeed!" Max said not as enthusiastically.
Knowing that he could have met her maybe sooner if he had stayed in Los Angeles instead of following his father's orders made his experience in Harvard even less pleasant. That, and the fact that it hadn't even been what he had wanted to do to begin with.

"You don't sound so thrilled…" Liz prognosticated with a light frown.
As far as she was concerned Harvard had always been a dream to her, though unfortunately she hadn't been able to make it so far. But Max had and she thought he should be proud of it, yet he didn't seem to feel that way at all.

"No, no it's just that, well… Law School wasn't really what I thought I'd be doing." he informed her and Liz couldn't help wondering why someone would do something they didn't want to. It wasn't as if he couldn't have chosen obviously. If he was good enough to enter Harvard she had no doubt that he could have done whatever pleased him.

"Then why did you do it?… I mean you had to like that even so, right?" she demanded, not wanting to force him to answer if he didn't want to, but slightly intrigued nonetheless.

"It was okay, I guess… but I'd rather have done Medical School!" Max revealed much to Liz's surprise.
He wanted to go to Medical School? Some coincidence that was, maybe they had even more in common that what she had originally thought.

"Really? … then why didn't you do it?" she inquired wanting even more now to know why he hadn't gone to Medical School if that was where he would have rather gone.

Max smiled at her curiosity and her eagerness to know more despite himself. It was strange actually to be revealing this to her. He didn't usually talk about that in fact. People always assumed that he had willingly wanted to follow into his parents' steps and not so many knew that studying medicine had actually always been his dream.

"Because my father had other career plans for me!" Max told her somewhat dejectedly after a moment. Even all those years after he still couldn't keep his tone neutral when he had to voice what had really prevented him from doing what he would have loved to.

"Oh!" Liz just whispered, sensing that this fact hadn't particularly pleased Max.
She didn't know his father, except for what everyone knew about Philip Evans of course, but some father he had to be to force his son to choose something he obviously wouldn't have chosen hadn't it been for him.

"Yeah oh!" Max echoed before going more into details. "… he's a lawyer himself, just like my mother actually, and let's just say that after he realized that his eldest son wouldn't be following into his steps, it left him with only me to take over the Law Firm after him… so he didn't pretty much give me any choice… but that's okay… being a lawyer is not that bad!" he concluded with a shrug not wanting her to feel bad for him or for having asked.

"Max, I'm sorry…" Liz said, her voice barely above a whisper.
In reality she didn't really know what to tell him. She hadn't done herself what she would have liked but that was because circumstances had made it impossible for her not because someone had almost forbidden her to do it. To have your own father totally disrespecting your own wishes and dreams, and practically running your life for you, had to be the worst thing that could happen to someone. At least it would have been for her.

"Why, it was not your fault!" Max served her back the same answer she had given him not so long ago and she couldn't help the matching smile on her face.
God, could anyone be cuter than this girl, he wondered in awe as he saw her smiling back at him.
But as quickly as it had come, the smile left her lips and Max couldn't help wondering if he hadn't said the wrong thing.

"Right… but I know what it feels like to not be able to fulfill your dreams!" she nonetheless declared with some sadness in her voice.
Something that didn't go unnoticed by Max either but before he could questioned her about what exactly she meant by that she was already changing the subject.

"So Max Evans, lawyer in spite of himself, it's clearing up a bit, are you going to tell me some more about those stars?" she asked him looking up to the sky, purposely adverting to look at him instead, sure that she would see the questions in his eyes. Questions she wasn't ready to answer just yet. But maybe later she would. Or the next time they would see each other.

Max followed her gaze and smiled again, knowing what she was trying to do, but in reality he didn't mind that much. He was sure she would talk to him when she would feel ready. He just hoped it would be soon.
And so he proceeded to show her the different constellations they could see again even if it was definitely not the best night for stargazing. But Max was just happy to already be able to share that with her.
If he had his way anyway, he would see her again soon, and often after that. He would just have to find the best night then to show her all the magnificence the dark and infinite expanse above them could offer. Summer nights were the best for that actually and he couldn't wait to see that season coming now.
A summer with Liz, yeah, he could perfectly pictured that. Taking a walk by the beach in the evening, stargazing at night and falling asleep with her in his arms afterwards. All a man could wish for.

As he started with his explanation once more, he couldn't help the goofy grin that crept upon his lips when he felt Liz scooting closer to him, -though she was still sitting on her own chair-, and resting her head against his shoulder. That was the rightest thing he had ever felt, there was no doubt in his mind, and nothing could be more beautiful than stargazing with Liz by his side.

For the next couple of hours then, they stayed like that, sitting near each other and as close as it was possible, Liz listened with barely contained awe to everything Max said, and Max just marveling at what a fantastic and attentive student she was or how even the most little and insignificant details could totally captivate her.

From time to time, when the portion of the sky they could see from their seats clouded again, they picked up on their previous conversations, learning a little more each time about the other one, who both of them knew now would become very important to them and hold a special place in their lives in a very near future.

At some point Max even proposed her to dance under the stars and when Liz argued that there couldn't hear the music from where they were, he just told her that they would dance to the one in their heads. Liz smiled then and inwardly hummed the tune of 'I shall believe', one of her favorite songs, if not the favorite, as they swayed slowly, tightly wrapped into each other's arms.
She shivered as well when Max whispered huskily in her ear and asked her to 'just look above them and let him guide her', more because of his hoarse voice than because of what he demanded, but in the end she just let him, trusting him so completely, it surprised even herself.
But when she gazed up into the sky she felt her breath getting caught in her throat at the sight again and at the sensation that washed over her at that moment. If she had thought that Max couldn't make that night even more magical than he had until now, he had just proven her wrong.
She had never really danced under the stars before but she knew this was a moment she would never forget about, as long as she would be alive. It looked like she was floating amidst the stars, gliding through the universe and she just didn't want to touch the ground ever again.

And so they danced and danced for what felt like eternity, and didn't care in the least that anyone else would have thought them crazy if they had seen them at that moment. They only concentrated on each other, savoring each minute they spent in each other's embrace and tuned the rest of the world out.

But since any good moment had to end somehow, reality came crashing down on them when after an umpteenth dance, Liz's mind-blowing beauty distracted Max a little too much and they nearly ended both in the pool when he twirled her around once more. And though he caught himself and her just in time, the romantic moment was cut short unexpectedly, and they both dissolved into fits of laughter instead.

"So… what about we go back inside now, you were right, it's starting to freeze here!" Liz said when they finally calmed some down.
She didn't want to leave this place, leave Max ever, but without the warmth of the blanket and the night progression, it was really getting colder and colder and she didn't know how much more she could take without seeing her teeth chattering. Besides, it was really getting late now, and if she knew that the party wasn't over yet, she was sure that everyone had to be wondering where they were. She hadn't realized they had spent so much time there, but it was nearly three in the morning already.
How come she didn't see the time pass when she was with Max, huh? Everything had happened so fast to her actually that it felt like they had only seen each other for a few minutes, maybe barely an hour. But maybe that was just because it was precisely Max and that with him she was almost sure that she would never get enough of anything anyway.

"Sure!" Max just said holding out his hand to her before smiling when he saw her yawning.
He himself hadn't realized how late it could be until their dance had come to an abrupt stop and he had looked at his watch, but when he had he had really been surprised. No wonder Liz couldn't hold back her yawn.

"Sorry… "Liz apologized when she realized he had caught her.
She didn't want him to think that being with him was boring her, because that was the furthest thing from the truth and if she could qualify Sean's date as the worst ever, there was no doubt in her mind that this night was from far the best she had spent in her whole life, but she was really having some difficulties fighting sleep now.

"You're tired?" Max asked, though he could perfectly see the answer himself.
However he was still hoping she would say no so that he would be able to spend a little more time with her, but what could he do if she was tired, he couldn't exactly force her to stay up all night just because he couldn’t bare the thought to be separate from her just right now.

And yet if he had known the turn the events were going to take, he would have never accepted to go back inside when she had asked him, he would have never set a foot outside and would have forced her to stay with him in that little world he had created just for her instead. And he would have made sure that nothing could scare her or hurt her in any way.

" Yeah… a little… maybe I should head home now!" Liz answered before yawning again, still oblivious to what was waiting for them outside.

She saw Max smile at her and she offered him a bright smile in return, but it died on her lips when they exited the pool still hands in hands and she caught a movement on their left.
At first the intruder's face was hiding in the shadows but as he stepped forward and started to speak Liz froze, immediately recognizing his voice.

"Well, well, well… look who we have here? The tease… and her pwoor excuse of a bodyguard…" Sean slurred and smirked once he was in front of them, his gaze going back and forth between Liz and Max.
So here was where they were? He had been looking for them for a while now and was starting to think they had left, but the luck was by his side again obviously.

After having asked a few questions here and there he had learned that Liz was indeed single and that the previous information he had gathered had been totally true. This guy wasn't more her boyfriend than he was, which meant only one thing: they had played him, both of them, and that was one thing that Sean Deluca really didn't like.
Well, too bad for them, they should have known better.

"What do you want Sean?… I don't think Maria would appreciate your being here!" Liz immediately remarked.

Sean had really nothing to do here actually, no one else besides them where outside or near the pool and Liz was sure that the only reason why they were allowed to do so to begin with was because she was Maria's best friend and Max Michael's brother.
Maria was pretty cool about a lot of things but there were just some ground rules everyone knew to respect if they didn't want to face her wrath, and not wander around the house when everyone was inside was one of them.
It was actually the one that came just after 'no one upstairs during the party', which would have certainly made Liz laugh now that she thought about it, if it weren't for the situation of course, since she and Max had broken most of Maria's rules in one night.

"And I think… you think tooo muuuch!" Sean answered with a heavy sigh like it had taken all of his energy just to think about that and utter the words. "… now… we had some unfish-… unfishnished business!"

"Unfinished business?" Max parroted incredulously, though correctly at least. Obviously this guy was searching for trouble, he thought immediately, wondering for the second time this night about Maria's cousin's sanity. Was he really stupid enough to not see that Max was certainly stronger than he was and that he wouldn't take long or even so much for him to make him bite the dust?

"Yep!" Sean just said and broke the dead bottle he had in his hand before menacingly approaching Max. "I don't like to be fool a made of… " he continued before frowning as if he had realized himself that he wasn't making any sense. "Made a fool of!"

"Oh my god Max!" Liz cried as soon as she saw the bottle connecting with the tree near Sean and understood his intentions. Even only with the light provided by the moon, she could clearly see the now sharp edges of the bottle glistening in front of them and she couldn't help thinking that if Sean charged any of them with it he could seriously hurt them.

"Liz… go back inside!" Max let go of her hand and ordered her as calmly as he could, not wanting to have her anywhere near this crazy psycho.

Trying to quickly assess the situation, he concluded, contrary to Liz, that the chances that Sean could really attack any of them were slim due to his drunken state, but that didn't mean that he was willing to take any risks with her life. He would definitely take care of this Sean guy and show him who he was trying to mess with later, but first he wanted to make sure that Liz would be sound and safe.

"No Max… I…" Liz tried to protest, obstinately refusing to leave Max alone with Sean.

She knew of his past and the fact that he had been arrested several times when he was younger for physical assaults and who knew what else, and even if she was almost sure that Max could take Sean without too much effort or problem - moreover with him being so smashed already - she really didn't want to leave Max's side, somehow hoping that maybe she could reason with the other guy before the situation got out of hand. After all she was the reason all of this had started, the reason why Sean was obviously willing to fight with him, therefore maybe he would listen to her.

"Now Elizabeth!" Max cut her off and insisted more forcefully, his eyes momentarily locking with hers, showing her how serious he was about that.

The use of her full name was of course enough to prompt Liz into action, but before she could take enough steps to distance herself from the two men, Sean suddenly changed target and advanced in her direction, the bottle dangerously pointing at her stomach and the last thing Max heard was her cry, just a few mere seconds before he saw the blood.

Chapter 5

I'm so bad, I know  … bear with me guys I've had a hard life  j/k… hope you don't mind me stopping here, but the rest is not still completely done… hopefully it'll come soon… till then, let me know about this part, okay?

I don't know if there are people out there that really like Sean, but if there are I think I'll have to apologize, since I always seem to make him the bad guy of the story (yep, now I realize he's always THE bad guy in my stories, all of them   at least the AU  ) Must be unconscious  or maybe it's because I still haven't gotten over the fact that he was way too close to Liz to my liking in season 2, or over Max's hurt face when he found them together having that pillow fight. No one hurts my Max and gets away with it

And now folks... if you don't mind I'm gonna rest a little  ... C U soon :P

Lovalien... thank you for helping me find this more easily  ... and I don't know yet how long this fic is going to be... normally there should be... let me count... uh... maybe 6 chapters before we go back to the beginning (depending on their lengths of course, since the party was supposed to be one chapter and I already have I don't know how many just for that   ... and after that... I've no frigging idea  ... but I'm the writer so I supposed you know how it's going to end right? so don't worry too much! And trust me even in the most desperate times

AN:Hey guys… some people, so nicely  , decided to inform me that it was just plain cruel and mean to leave you hanging here like that (thank the French Roswellians guys, they threatened my life if I didn't come back soon   ), so I worked as fast as I could considering that I have a life too, a bf who is very demanding lately (wonder why, could it be because they are airing Roswell again and I refuse to see him or take his calls between 5:50 and 6:45 pm   ) and all the rest, and here I am again with that new part which I hope will put to a rest all your fears… but before that… the usual THANK Us … I'm still amazed at how many people read this story even if they don't all leave feedbacks, so really THANK U to all of you too!!! I appreciate
Now for those who so kindly left feedbacks:

Alien614: well, I'm happy to make you happy  Thank U for the feedback :P

Marteloise:
Max is such a sweetheart !!! You can't not love him !!! And such a romantic too.. stargazing, dancing under the stars.. *sigh* He knows how to win a girl's heart..
Yep… that my Max… so chivalrous and such a gentleman *sigh* … glad to see you approve
Why did you stop there???

Because I'm a bad, bad girl maybe :?  … Now, did I come back soon enough for you???
But I know where to find you...

Damn, I knew I shouldn't have given you so much information  … now, I wouldn't want you to make such a trip for nothing of course, so here is the new part… Hope it will calm you down a little
Thank U so much for your always fabulous feedback :P

Begonia9508:
does that mean that Liz is wounded?
I guess this part answer you question, doesn't it? … Hope you'll forgive me now for stopping at such a bad place
Thank U too… I'm glad to have an almost compatriot here… I live only 20 minutes from Basel in Switzerland  … but shhh, don't tell anyone, I'm sometimes WANTED around here

Frenchkiss:
And here I was totally happy and giddy after reading those beautiful dreamer moments, the stargazing all alone in the pool, getting to know each other, dancing under the stars, but you couldn't let my dreamer heart be happy, huh?
Sorry girl… plus dure a du etre la chute   … I'm so bad sometimes, I know that, you know that, so where was the surprise  … But you'll see that I arranged everything in this part
When Liz thought Max was going to ask her to go skinny diping with him, I almost drool all over myself, and I was silently praying it was his plan Let me tell you I was as disappointed as Liz
LOL… now if you ask for it very very nicely, maybe I could see what I can do for you
But you were right… even if Max would have wanted nothing more than go skinny dipping with Liz we all know he's not the type to do this on his first more or less 'date' with Liz… not in this story at least
Poor Liz it must have been hard on her, not to know her father, and losing her mother; And she seemed kinda frustrated, what was her dream? I guess her father was Jeff Parker, is he really dead? Is it something related to him which is going to come between Max and Liz? (I didn't forget you're already planning on making thier life miserable )
Max isn't happy with his career, he's not a lawyer by choice. Medical school, huh? Maybe it's not too late. I don't know Philip Evans but I already dislike him. I've got the feeling he's going to stir troubles.
Can't answer this just now, but you'll know soon I promise
Thank U, as always, I loved your feedback :P
Just for you to find it more easily

 Thank U girl, what would I do without you? You make my life always so easier

Milla:
However I have to admit that I wouldn't have anything against very naked Max Evans in the pool.
What is it with that obsession to see Max naked?… I really can't see where this is coming from   (yeah right  )
I hope that Liz isn't seriouslly hurt. Max should just turn that bastard into dust!
LOL… in BTWS maybe he would have, but here I'm afraid he won't be able to  though of course I liked the idea  … and no Liz isn't seriously hurt  don't worry! Come on I'm the writer, I would never do such a thing *cough*
Thank U too, Milla  I always love your feedback too!

Gigo:
You're too cruel!!! How could you give us a perfect part, where Max and Liz were... floating off to never-never land with all of their happy thoughts, and then do that?!?!
I know… I'm sorry to do this to you  … now you really have to explain this expression to me 'never-never land' because I swear I never heard it before and I'm sure that Marteloise is going to kill me now
You've got me all tied up in knots, trying to figure out what's going to cause them so much heartbreak, and that just makes it 10 times worse because I'm imagining all of them, instead of just the one that's true!
I'm even more sorry for that, because it's something I can't arrange right now, but I hope it will be alright once you know… ahh, stupid me, how could it be alright when then the matter will be even worse… anyway, don't leave, okay, I swear I will make everything work in the end, just trust me
Thank U very much too

Kaela, hey you , I'm so glad to see you here, I missed your and your sister's feedbacks  How are you?
I love every story of yours I have read and this one is definitely no exception!!!
Thank U very much, it means a lot to me… hope you didn't have long to wait for this part :? … I know you've been waiting way longer for M'sH but I'll take care of that soon hopefully :P

Roswelluver:
I hope Liz is OK
Question answered in a second
Thank U very much to you too! I can always count on you and it means a lot to me too :P

Lovalien: Hun', hope you're feeling better  I'm with you, okay, you know that :P
Ican't believe you let Sean hurt her. What a bastard I hope Max will teach him some things
I can't believe it either, what are you talking about?  … I think he's just going to, yeah  Don't worry
Thank U very much Deb, a terrific hug for you :P

Milestogo99:
the prologue made me want to read this fic, because it was so greatly written
.
Thank U so very much… I'm glad you appreciated, hope you're going to like the next part too  and of course WELCOME

Strawberry Shortcake:
You are truly working your way up my list of favorite authors!! So please come back soon with a new part to this and all your stories!!
 Really? Girl, you don't know what that sentence did to me :onfire:  … I hope I'm not going to disappoint you now :? Thank U so very much for the compliment and for all your feedbacks… keep them coming, I really love them

Dreams And Candy:
Now we have 2 Liz on the dying in 2 of your fics !!!! (well, I'm actually sorry to announce you that after all this time our dear Liz from TMWYW has probably been dead and buried since an eternity, but,... ) Anyway, What has this girl done to you lady ??? Do I sense a little jealousy ???? Ok, i'm only kidding, but this is bad, really really bad of you to leave us here !!! But once again you love it right ??
 … Too good… I swear to you I don't hate Liz and I'm not jealous, but most of all I can assure you that neither Liz nor Max will ever die in one of my stories, I mean it would kill me to do such a thing believe me… so don't worry everything's gonna be okay
It was awesome, I as usual had this smile playing on my lips when I read any of your fics actually... I don't know how you manage to always create such an atmosphere that we always plunge into it and feel so ... fluffy, I guess
 Thank U so much, that's really a fantastic compliment and I'm always happy to oblige… anything to make you happy girl  … hope you'll forgive me for Liz's coma in TMWYW after this part
It’s “Lola, qui es-tu Lola ?” isn’t it ??? With that awfully cute guy that played, I think his name was Simon or smthg... Anyway, if I’m right, and I’m pretty sure I am, I dearly hope that this fic is only indeed inspired by the show, cuz’ I don’t think I could stand seeing my Max and Liz going through such an ordeal...it’s really an inextricable situation they were in...
 again… You don't give up easily, huh? But you know I won't answer you   … however I know that show and I know how it ended, so if it can help you feel better I'll just say, don't worry, my story won't take the same turn
Thank U thank U, thank U for your feedback, it means even more since I know you don't really have much time to come to the board, so once more THANK YOU :P

VeronicaB:
You can't do this! You can't just leave us here like this!!!
I know, it was mean, that's why I'm here again so soon,
Thank U for the feedback and I hope you like the next part

One last thing for everyone: WHO THE HELL SAID LIZ WAS HURT??? ME?? Uh-huh, I don't think so

Chapter 6

He didn't register any pain. He couldn't feel it. He didn't even really realize he was hurt at first, so overwhelmed he was by the growing rage that was rapidly coursing through his veins. But he could see the blood slowly dripping from the open wound on his forearm and he stared at it a few seconds like captivated by the intense red color. The proof was just before his eyes and yet it wasn't that fact that unnerved him so much.
It could have been Liz's blood he kept repeating to himself, it could have been her, the thought just fueling even more the anger he was feeling. That bastard could have hurt Liz and that was enough to make Max lose all rational thoughts.

It had all happened in a blur really, one minute he was asking, or actually more like ordering Liz to go back inside, and the next Sean was charging in her direction, the bottle in front of him. His reaction though he hadn't even had time to think about it had been quick, swift and precise fortunately and before anyone could understand what was happening, he had his arm around Liz's waist pulling her against his body and away from Sean's trajectory, the broken bottle in the end connecting with his forearm instead of her stomach, but it had been a close call.

She had screamed at the unsuspecting move and he had first thought she had been injured but that was until he had taken a second to look at her and then at his own arm. That was also when he had pushed her in the direction of the house without thinking about it twice, asking her once more to go back inside.

He now stared up from where his eyes had been riveted just a second before and just seeing Sean's face again, seeing him looking back at him, his gaze going back and forth between him and the bottle like he couldn't quite understand himself what had just happened, was enough for Max to lose it completely.

Seeing him taking a step to him Sean lifted the bottle again, certainly in a desperate attempt to protect himself from the other guy, but at that instant even an army wouldn't have been enough to defend him against Max's wrath. After the precedent argument they had had and Max letting him get away with it, this was the last straw. The one move he should better never have made.

"That's it!" was all Max muttered for all warning and the very next second his fist connected with Sean's jaw, the poor guy stumbling with the force of the impact and falling sideward, and even if he had been paid for it Max couldn't have helped the half satisfied smile that spread upon his lips when he saw him colliding with the tree next to him.
Sean didn't even have time to react, didn't even have the chance to utter a moan or a protest, the pain of Max's blow on his jaw blinding him for a moment first, but that wasn't anything in comparison to the pain he felt coursing through his skull when he crashed directly into that tree he had used to sharpen his improvised weapon, and before he could even try or think to steady himself, his world went black and he slid to the ground with a thud.

* * *

Running into the house Liz started asking to everyone she met if they had seen Michael and Maria, hoping they could maybe stop their brother and cousin from fighting, but all the people here either didn't know where they had gone or downright didn't have any idea who she was talking about.
God, where were they? Liz groaned when she couldn't see them anywhere. What was she going to do if she didn't find them?

Not knowing where to go, she ran to the different bathrooms, hoping that her best friend would be there, but there was no one in sight in or near those rooms at that moment.
Quickly assessing her options, she was ready to grab the first guy she would find and ask him to come with her to separate Max and Sean, who she was sure had to have come to blows by now, when she finally spotted Maria coming down the stairs and into the living room.

"Maria… Michael… Where's Michael?" Liz asked with difficulties, not having realized before just how out of breath she actually was.

"What? Why? What is it Liz?" Maria demanded when she looked at her friend's quite frightened face.

"Sean… you need to come… Max… and Michael, he needs to stop them!" Liz tried to explain, tugging at Maria's arm and moving to the kitchen again.

"Wait! Why? What the hell is happening Liz? You're scaring me!" Maria exclaimed and stopped her friend, wanting her to tell her exactly what had happened to put her in such a state, but Liz was just too nervous and anxious to answer her correctly.

"Sean… he has a bottle… and he tried… he's going to hurt Max!"

"Oh my god! MICHAEL! MICHAEL!" Maria turned around and started to scream as soon as she more or less understood the situation.
If Liz was talking about bottles and Max being hurt, she knew all too well what that could mean if her cousin was involved too. It wouldn't be the first time he would find himself in this kind of situation.

"What?" Michael appeared out of nowhere and looked at his girlfriend like she had suddenly lost her head.
Why was she screaming like that? He had told her he was coming down too, hadn't he?

"Your brother's got into a fight with my cousin!" she just said and it was enough to make Michael move.

"Shit!" he cursed and followed the girls, swearing inwardly that he would just kill Deluca if he had just as much as touched a hair of his brother's head.

The three exited the house through the kitchen back door like Max and Liz had done a few hours before and took the direction of the pool, but they almost stopped running altogether when they saw Sean already on the ground now and Max just standing near him while he held his arm.
Obviously whatever had taken place here was already over. Which was certainly a good thing they would all admit.

"Oh my god, Maxwell, what have you done?… you killed my cousin?!" Maria arrived the first near the two guys and she gasped in horror at the scene that was waiting for her in the back of her garden.
She rushed to Sean and her first reflex was to check for a pulse sure that Max had ended the life of her cousin, when she heard his almost spat answer.

"Believe me I wish I had… but unfortunately he's just out!" Max said disdainfully, wishing more than anything that this could be true.
Surely the world wouldn't miss that scum.

It hadn't even been any fun to punch him. At least if Sean had been able to fight back Max would have been fully satisfied but like it was he didn't even feel anything. Sean had gotten away with it too easily once more finally. What was a mere thump compared to what he had wanted to do?
He deserved more. He deserved to be beaten up until he wouldn't even know his own name or until he would finally understand that he should better never approach Liz ever again or he would suffer a painful death.

"What the hell happened here? " Michael growled looking between Sean's inert form sprawled on the ground and his brother who looked thoroughly pissed. Pissed beyond belief actually and… bleeding? "What did that bastard do to my brother?" he suddenly yelled marching straight to the unconscious guy when he saw the dead bottle near him and got a better picture of what had taken place. Or at least as straight as he could in his own state, even if he should have better gone and seen if his brother was fine of course.
Anyway, he knew he would be in better hands with Liz and Maria than with himself, right?

Liz for her part hadn't even spared Sean a second glance after she had seen him on the ground, so glad she almost was that he had finally gotten what he had been searching for all night . The moment she had seen Max again she had rushed to him with only one thought in mind: making sure he was okay, even if she could see herself that at first sight he seemed to be.

"Hey… are you okay?" Max asked her as soon as he saw her and before she could even open her mouth to ask him the exact same thing, and the irony of the situation wasn't lost on her.

Here he was, asking her if she was alright, when all she had done was run inside to get some help, help that hadn't even been needed in the end, while he had been the one facing Sean and risking his life to save hers, even if she could admit that it had certainly not really been threatened to begin with.
But the problem was that Liz knew that Max would have acted the exact same way had Sean or anyone else had a gun, a knife or anything else that could have really caused more serious damages. He would have protected her anyway, she was sure of that and she didn't know what to make of that fact.

"Liz?… are you alright?" Max repeated, his hand gently cupping the side of her face to have her focusing on him, and he frowned when he noticed she looked like she had spaced out a second.
She looked awfully pale too he thought, but what did he expect really? Sean had certainly scared her out of her mind, no wonder all the color had drained out of her face.

But contrary to what Max was thinking, that wasn't what was making Liz go whiter than a sheet, what had made her freeze on her spot. One of the first thing she had noticed as she had approached closer to Max was the torn sleeve of his shirt and though she had hoped that he had maybe just ripped it in his fight with Sean, the sight that greeted her when she looked more carefully made her stomach churn painfully.
Blood. The end of his sleeve was coated in blood.

For a few seconds the words had gotten stuck on her throat but as she felt his fingers caressing her face she completely snapped out of it, and suddenly realizing the seriousness of the situation she got into action.

"Oh god Max… you're bleeding! Oh my god!" she all but yelled, getting hold of his right arm and trying to get a better look at his injury.
Oh Lord, there was too much blood here, wasn't there? This couldn't be good she thought immediately.

When he had circled her waist to pull her out of Sean's way, she hadn't had time to process anything and before she could even think, everything was over. Sean had looked quite dumbfounded and Max had just ordered her inside, yelling a single 'go' to have her leave. Only now did she realize that there had been more than what she had first seen or thought. Max had taken the blow for her, and yet he hadn't even flinched. He had been wounded, and all he had thought about was getting her out of there.
However not a second did she stop to think that it could have been her or that the situation could have been much worse because she would have been touched on the stomach. It didn't register in her mind yet because all she could see was Max's injured arm.

"It's okay… it's nothing, really!" Max calmly stated, understanding that she could be concerned but not wanting her to panic at the sight of the blood.
There wasn't any reason to panic anyway, it hurt a little of course but beside that he was perfectly alright.

Meanwhile, Maria was doing her best to calm down Michael who didn't seem to hear her or want to pay any attention to her screams.

"Michael… stop it… I think he has gotten enough!" she repeated for the umpteenth time when he still refused to listen to her.
He had squatted down near Sean and was now slapping his face with all the strength he could muster, which fortunately for her cousin wasn’t that much since he wasn't really in any state to fight himself and therefore he missed his face at least one time out of two, but it would certainly not help the already growing bump and bruise Sean was sporting on the side of his face either.

"Not enough if he's still alive!" Michael hissed and not so gently gripped Sean's chin, shaking the other guy's head like that would help him gain consciousness again.
Not that he would be conscious very long once he would have finished with him, Michael thought bitterly.

"Michael… stop this right now!" Maria insisted more forcefully as this time she saw Michael sitting up and pushing at Sean with his foot while he shouted at him to fucking wake up. "He's definitely a jerk but he's my cousin nonetheless… my mom's gonna kill me if anything happens to him here!"

"Well it's not your fault, you don't choose your family after all… I can't hold it against you I guess… now turn the other way sweetie, we'll just tell your mother you didn't see it happening!" Michael answered nonchalantly, like it was really no big deal.

Said like that it sounded awfully like he was insinuating they could perfectly kill him and maybe bury him in the back of their garden and he wouldn't even feel any kind of regret or remorse. But it shouldn't even surprise Maria since Sean had done one of the thing Michael certainly couldn't forgive anyone. He had messed with his family and that was something her boyfriend didn't joke about.

"Michael Ethan Evans… I'm not kidding! Don't. Touch. My. Cousin!" Maria finally yelled and as a last resort, she gripped his arm and shoved him aside, planting herself between him and her cousin once he was out of the way.

"Fine… but you woman owe me big time for sparing this asshole's miserable life!" Michael finally relented through clenched teeth, leaning against the tree afterwards and taking a gulp of the unfinished beer he hadn't even had time to drop on his way here.
However no sooner had Maria turned around to see how Max and Liz were doing that he kicked Sean's thigh, doing his best afterwards to hold back a chuckle and not attract any more attention on him. Maybe if Maria forgot a little about him he could take care of that Sean once and for all.
Nah, that would be as much fun as fighting with a paraplegic. He would wait for Sean to wake up again, and then he would remind him that no one messed with an Evans without suffering the consequences.

Michael could honestly have killed Sean two feet away from her, Liz wouldn't have even noticed because at that moment she had only eyes for Max and his bleeding arm, even though he didn't seem to care that much.
As she inspected his wound she realized that though it didn't seem to be too deep, the risk that some little pieces of the dead bottle could be embedded in his flesh was still possible and therefore she knew that that cut would have to be disinfected very carefully.
Maybe they should take him to the hospital she all of a sudden thought.
No, she quickly reconsidered, she was sure that she could take care of that herself, but first of all she had to slow the bleeding somehow, or at least prevent any other bacteria from coming into contact with the wound.

Looking down to herself to see if she had anything she could cover it with and realizing that nothing would do, she turned to Maria who was just by her side at that moment and without even thinking about it twice she just ripped off one of her shirt sleeve.

"Oh my god Liz? What the hell did you do that for? Are you nuts? Do you know how much this shirt cost? " Maria gasped and yelled, looking incredulously at her now one-sleeved shirt.
Dammit, it had taken her a long time to select that outfit and look what she had done to her style in a second.

"Not much since you took it from the shop!… You'll just have to take another one!" Liz glared at her and then dismissed her, concentrating again on Max whose protests remained unheard until now.
She wrapped the fabric around the wound but was careful to not tighten it too much just in case she had been right before and foreign bodies had entered the lesion.

"Liz… Liz… stop, I'm fine… hey, I'm fine!" Max tried once more thinking she was exaggerating here, but Liz obstinately refused to pay any attention to what he was telling her.

Okay he was bleeding, but besides that she had really no reason to lose her nerves. It wasn’t a life threatening injury for all that, barely a scratch or a little cut, and yet Liz acted like she was afraid he would expel his last breath of life any second. She should better go and check on Sean, he looked worse than Max felt.

"NO! No, you're not Max… you can't be fine… you're bleeding!" Liz snapped unexpectedly and suddenly on the verge of a hysteria fit.
How could he say that he was fine when he was injured for God's sake.
Was he blind? Didn't he see that this could be bad?

"Okay, you're right… m-maybe I'm not… but you have to calm down okay?!" Max ventured carefully, even if he knew himself that what he was saying wasn't true but he would do anything if it meant easing her fears.

And yet instead of calming her down like he had hoped it would, his attitude seemed to do just the opposite and when she looked up at him again he could swear that she looked even more upset than she had been a few seconds ago. Maybe he should note somewhere that he should better never piss that woman off. Who would have thought that in front of him now stood the same woman who had been so sweet with him all night, huh?
The thought almost made him laugh out loud, but somehow he didn't really think she would appreciate that.

And yet he couldn't really blame her either because her reaction was quite normal considering all that had happened in the last ten minutes or so and she certainly was quite riled up because of the events. He only guessed that she had been really scared, after all Sean had aimed at her and not really at him, he had only been touched because he had more or less put himself between the two of them. It certainly could be traumatizing to know that maybe someone could hate you so much that he had wanted to hurt you.

However he wasn't sure that that was what Sean himself had really meant to do. Now that Max was calm enough to think about it objectively, he could say that the guy had looked as shocked as all of them when he had seen what he had almost done to Liz, -not that he had seemed to care so much about what he could have done to him, his intentions had been pretty clear as far as Max was concerned- and therefore he was more and more convinced that Sean had only wanted to block her way and prevent her from escaping, only it hadn't turned out exactly like he had imagined it would.

But that didn't mean that he felt any compassion or pity for the guy, or that he had any intention to forget about what had happened. He could have seriously hurt Liz and that was a thing Max knew he would never be able to forgive Maria's cousin. Therefore, he should better never find himself on his path again any time soon, because he didn't think he would be able to control himself and not kick his ass thoroughly this time.

Liz stared at him, her expression unreadable, not quite believing herself that he was asking her to calm down. How was she supposed to calm down when all she could think about was that he was hurt when it was her fault?

It should have been her she finally conceded, and yet it didn't make her feel any better to know what she had escaped from, or what had not been instead because honestly, as crazy as it seemed, she would have rather seen it happening this way, it would have certainly hurt her less than seeing Max bleed because he had wanted to protect her. She couldn't explain why but she just knew that the physical pain she would have endured if it had been her, wouldn't have been worse than witnessing anything happening to him because of her, not worse than what she was feeling right now each time she looked down and saw his blood.

Deciding to not think about this anymore for now if she didn't want to just dissolve in tears, she turned to her best friend again and addressed her as she all but pushed Max forward, her hands still on his forearm, so that they could head back to the house.

"Where do you have the first aid kit Maria?"

"Upstairs… In the bathroom… I-I'll go with you! " Maria proposed them immediately before hesitating again as she turned and looked once more at her cousin who had yet to wake up.

She would have a serious conversation with him once he would, he could count on that and then he would hear about her or about what she thought of him, but right now she didn't really feel like leaving him outside alone. What if he woke up and didn't feel well, or did something even more stupid and irresponsible than what he had just done or whatever.
Seeing there were not so many solutions, she turned to the only person who could take care of that while she went and showed Liz everything she would need.
Oh, boy… why could she already feel that she was so going to regret this?

"Uh… Michael, watch him… but don't do anything to him okay? I'm coming back in no time!" she ordered him, her tone so stern that there shouldn't have been any doubt in Michael's mind that there would be hell to pay if he did anything that he shouldn't, but when had Michael ever really listened to her, huh?

"Sure, baby…go… he's in good hands!" Michael answered a little too cheerfully not the least ashamed for what he knew he was about to do.

If Maria had seen the way he smirked at that moment she certainly would have thought twice before leaving her cousin with Michael of course, but right then she was more preoccupied by Max's state and Liz's nearly hysterical one to really pay any attention to him.
She knew her best friend and when she was acting like that, all mechanical and business like and all, she was generally not very far from a nervous breakdown.

Almost as soon as they had their backs to him and they were far enough to not see what he could be doing, Michael sat down, cross-legged next to Sean once more and with a devilish smile poured the rest of his beer all over the other guy's face, as if the liquid was going to be of any help at that point.
Well, in the movies the guys always woke up after something like that, didn't they?
Too bad it hadn't worked for Sean, now he was sticky and wet but he hadn't awoken yet. Maybe he should try something else.

"I've always told you you should be kissing the ground I walk on Deluca… I just never thought that you would take that literally." Michael slurred after a moment when there still wasn't any progression concerning Sean's state. Then he rested his chin on his hand like he needed to support it, or maybe was trying to come up with another idea, and finally after another minute he reached out once more to push on Sean. "Not that I mind really, but now stand up man… you're too close to them, your putrid breath is going to kill the plants." he tried again but Maria's cousin didn't move at all even after having been shaken left and right several times.
Man, this was really getting boring after all.

Maria, Liz and Max made their way through the house under the curious stares of part of the guests who were certainly wondering what could have happened to Michael's brother, at least for those who knew who he was, but the girls didn't even spare them a look, heading instead directly to the bathroom. All the while Max, as for him, just tried to smile as much as he could to prove everyone there that he was actually alright, but Liz's sudden protective reaction was certainly not helping the matter, nor did the death glares she was throwing right and left every time someone was fool enough to approach them and ask what had happened.

Once in the bathroom Maria started to rummage through her drawers and the different bathroom storage units, searching for everything Liz would need, and deposited everything on the marble countertop.

At the same time, Liz had forced Max to lean against the sink, asking him to not move or even think about protesting while she took care of his wound.
She next made him slightly spread his legs and stepped between them, not even noticing how Max swallowed when she did just that.
Oh boy, couldn't she see that this was killing him?
After that she rolled up his sleeve to get a clearer and better view of the cut and couldn’t help but grimace when she noticed that blood was still somewhat flowing from the open lesion, though it wasn't as important as before. She briefly wondered if he wouldn't need stitches after all, but she guessed that until she couldn't really see how deep it indeed was, she wouldn't know for sure.

Maria observed Liz a few seconds before deciding to go and check again on her cousin. Liz seemed to have taken charged of everything anyway so there wasn't anything else she could do to help here anymore.

"Are you going to be alright Max?" she couldn't help asking nonetheless, trying to act as if she wasn't feeling guilty for what her cousin had done to him when inwardly she knew that part of this was her fault too.
If she hadn't caved when she had seen that her cousin had invited himself and when he had asked her if he could stay now that he was there, nothing would have happened. But never in a million years would she have thought that he could do something like that, at least not to someone she knew or in her own house. Never, but she guessed that proved just how little she knew him after all. She would really be more careful from now on, and Sean had another thing coming if he thought he was going to get away with this.

"Yeah… you don't have to worry!" Easily reading her thoughts Max smiled genuinely at her before looking back at Liz who seemed to be solely concentrated on making him feel better. He really liked the way she touched him so delicately, like she was afraid she was going to hurt him more or like she couldn't bare the thought to see him in any pain and wanted to have this finished as soon as possible.
Man, he could definitely get used to this.

"I… I'm sorry you know… about Sean… and…" Maria started, knowing that she at least owed him an apology for her cousin's behavior, but he didn't let her go any further.

"Hey… don't even mention it okay… like Michael said, none of this is your fault… you didn't choose him as a cousin!" Max halted her speech and told her sincerely.
Not a second had he blamed Maria for what had happened to him. She hadn't been the one holding up the bottle so she had no reason to feel guilty at all. But when he saw that she didn't seem to be convinced yet, he smiled and winked at her as he added: "Really 'Ria… I'm fine… it was nothing at all… you can stop with the face!"

"Okay… "she said after a brief hesitation. "I'm leaving you with Liz then… she's the best almost doctor I know… you're in good hands… I'm going to make sure your brother doesn't kill my cousin… in his state he could drown him in the pool and not even realize it!" she then tried to joke though she was sure that at that moment neither of them could have cared less about what Michael could do or not to the one who had obviously attacked them both tonight.

That reminded her that she would have to ask for the details later, because she wasn't sure she had really understood what exactly had happened between Liz, Max and Sean. He couldn't have acted that way just because Max had interrupted his moment with Liz, or rather rescued her from his clutches, it all depended from whose point of view you were seeing it, a few hours earlier. Even Sean couldn't be that stupid right?

"Yeah… okay!" Max answered and smiled once more when he saw her exiting the bathroom, leaving him alone with Nurse Liz.
Oh, yes, he liked that.

End of chapter 6

Title: Family Lies

Disclaimer: For the third time, no I don't own anything Roswell related  though I wish I did! I'm sorry for the delay, I know I promised this for yesterday night but I couldn't post then and tonight I was out so I couldn't do it sooner, but here I am now… I'm not going to thank U all individually tonight coz it's already late and it would take me too long but just know that I loved every piece of feedback you guys gave me :P … THANK U SO MUCH!!!!

Now a little message for the French Roswellian's (oh BTW Begonia 9508, I'm indeed from Alsace and I wanted to thank U for what you wrote, I really took that as a compliment  though I didn't know that was how people saw us   )… uh, what was I saying? So what happened in that bathroom? Kiss… No-kiss… my compatriots decided, so if there is any reclamation, go and blame it on them  … I hope you enjoy though

Chapter 7

Liz worked in silence a few minutes, cleaning the wound as best as she could while at the same time she tried to not cause Max any more pain, but it was not really easy and consequently she had do move very slowly. After a moment though she could finally look at it closely and she expelled a relieved sigh.
Now that she could see it more clearly she realized that like she had suspected outside, or maybe rather hoped, it wasn't very profound though it ran a good three maybe even four inches from the side of his wrist to his forearm nonetheless, but fortunately it was barely a few millimeters in width and depth. Besides she couldn't see any pieces of glass in the lesion either which was definitely a good thing.
It wasn't bleeding anymore she also noticed, but it didn't stop her from shuddering when she realized that at a different angle Sean could have perfectly touched a vein and made things way worse for Max.

Pulling herself out of those thoughts rapidly, she took Maria's antiseptic and coated a compress with some of the liquid to disinfect the cut.

"It's gonna sting a little." she warned Max gently before touching him so that he would know what to expect.

"Don't worry I'm tough!" he joked but that didn't stop him from slightly wincing when she finally applied the compress on his injury.

"Sorry!" Liz apologized when she heard his breath coming out in a hiss.
So much for trying to not hurt him, huh?

"It's okay!" Max smiled and looked down at her tenderly though she didn't meet his eyes. She just looked so cute, playing the nurse for him.

"It looked worth than it actually is." Liz admitted after a few minutes, clearly relieved for the fact because ultimately he wouldn't need those stitches after all and therefore it would heal faster than what she had first assumed.

Reaching then for the Neosporin she applied a small amount on her finger and smeared it on his cut. Since it wasn't too deep in the end, this would help to alleviate the pain and prevent any further infection.

"I think it's gonna be okay… but maybe you won't be able to use this arm so much during a few days." she informed him, wondering how he would make it if he had to work, or write or even how he was going to do the simplest things. Where it was situated the injury not only effected his arm but his hand too in fact.

"It's okay… I'm left-handed anyway!" Max revealed, knowing that it wouldn't really be a problem actually. ( )

Considering where she had been standing when Sean had attacked, Max hadn't had any other choice than to reach for her with his right arm, but now he was glad he had because that way he wouldn't have to worry about other consequences. He was hurt right, but at least it wouldn't really interfere in his everyday life. He could already picture what his father would have said if he had had to tell him he wouldn't be able to come to work because he had been in a fight. First he would have given him an earful about how people like him were supposed to know better than solving their problems with violence and that he thought he had raised him to be smarter than that, and then he would certainly insist on suing Sean for what he had done. Which Max was definitely not willing to do, if only for Maria's sake.

No, it would certainly be better if his father didn't hear a word about this.
Besides with Liz's treatment he had no doubt that he would soon feel like nothing at all had happened.
Now, that reminded him something, he realized.

"Hmm… Liz… what did Maria mean when she said you were the best almost doctor she knew?… if you don't mind me asking of course." Max asked Liz when he all of a sudden remembered Maria's words.
He had thought it was weird at that moment but he had been so concentrated on watching Liz that he hadn't taken the time to really give it some thinking, but now that he thought about it again, he couldn't help wondering what she had wanted to insinuate.

When she heard him Liz nearly groaned out loud. She had hoped he hadn't paid attention to that detail, but unfortunately her request hadn't been granted.
God, Maria and her big mouth. Why hadn't she just kept it shut, like Max needed to know that she had had the opportunity he had been refused but hadn't been able to make it for all that.

"I-I actually went to Medical School myself …" she revealed at last when she felt his eyes on her and understood that he wouldn't let the matter go until he would have his answer.

Waiting for his response, though she almost already suspected what it would be, she grabbed a bandage this time and started to wrap it carefully around his forearm and over the wound.

"You… Really? That's great!" Max beamed, understanding even better why she had been so certain of what had to be done, or why her hands had been so steady when she had treated him. It was so evident that she had known what she was doing, and now he knew why.
Wow, but now that he thought of it, that also meant that they had even more in common than what he had first thought.
Wouldn't it have been so totally cool if they had both been doctors? Maybe they could have even set up a practice together. "Drs Evans and Evans", that sounded great, didn't it?
Oh. Boy! Where the hell had this come from? That would mean that they would have to be… married to call their medical practice such way. And they were so far from getting married! How could he already think about such things when they hadn't even just kissed? He was really losing it!

"It would have been great if I had finished… but I had to drop off when my mother died." Liz corrected, not knowing what was on Max's mind at that moment, but she didn't dare look up afterwards to see his reaction to that new piece of information.

Honestly, she knew that maybe she could have made it somehow but when her mother had passed away, Liz had been left all alone to fend for herself, and she had tried to make things work as best as she could. At that time dropping school and taking over her mother's business had seemed like the wisest thing to do even if maybe selling the shop could have helped her too. It was well situated and rather well known, she wouldn't have had so much difficulties finding a purchaser but it just hadn't felt right to her. Not when her mother had spent almost her whole life working there, doing her best to run a thriving business so it could be Liz's some day and she could benefit of it too. Only her mother had died too young and contrary to what she had always wanted for her daughter, Liz had been left with bills to pay and choice to make, and therefore had had to work herself and take charge of everything if she didn't want to have to give up everything her mother had taken so much effort and time to build.

Max was speechless a brief moment but when he found his voice again, the only thing that came out was a short 'oh'. Then he thought about telling her how sorry he was of course that she had had to give up her dreams, her earlier comment making more sense now, but he knew well now what she was going to say so he decided to take another road.

"It's too bad, I'm sure you would have been a fantastic doctor." he whispered sincerely, knowing that his words were utterly true.
He would have put his life in her hands without the slightest doubt or hesitancy because even after only having spent a few hours with her, he knew that she had all the qualities to be the best of the doctors.

"Yeah maybe… we'll never know." Liz said as softly, not really wanting to dwell on the past or something that couldn't be anymore anyway.
Besides Medical School was still a sore spot for her and she didn't really like to talk about it. That was mainly why she hadn't revealed her situation to him when he had talked about what he had wanted to do himself, and right now wasn't any better a moment if you asked her, because thinking about that, about her mother death and about her shattered dreams, on top of everything else was just too much for her to handle in a row.

As she finished, she then absent-mindedly fiddled with his bandage, suddenly finding it very interesting, or at least more interesting than what they had been talking about. Anything in fact to set her mind on something else and not lose it in front of him.

"Liz?… what is it?" Max asked when he noticed that she seemed to be very quite suddenly.
Maybe he shouldn't have asked. Or maybe it was just the stress of the night that was finally catching up on her, he thought.

Finally lifting her chin when she didn't respond, his breath caught in his throat when he noticed the tears shimmering in her beautiful eyes. He wasn't able to explain why he felt this way but god, seeing her like that hurt him more than anything had ever done in his whole life before, even more than his injured forearm at that moment.

Silently he brushed her tears away with his thumbs the instant they escaped her blinking eyes and without even thinking about it twice he took her in his arms and held her as close to him as he could.

"Hey, it's okay… don't cry Liz… it was nothing… you're fine… it's alright!" he soothed as she trembled in his arms, considering that the subject they had just talked about couldn't be the reason for her sudden change of mood since after all they had more or less brushed it earlier and though it hadn't seemed to especially please her, it hadn't been enough to bring her to tears either.
She had been way too calm until now anyway, - well maybe except when she had snapped at him - it was only normal that she broke down finally. The amazing thing actually was that she had been able to handle the situation so well and control herself for so long.

Liz held him tightly, her arms wrapped around his neck, and finally not able to stand it any longer, she let go of her tears. She guessed that bringing back those memories had been the last straw for her. The little detail that did that she wasn't able to hold it together, or even hold up her act any longer. In fact, ever since seeing Max was injured she had tried to focus on nothing else because that was the more important at the moment, and then after that she had done her best to only concentrate on her task and act like a doctor but once that had been taken care of, everything caught up on her and she couldn't help thinking about what else could have happened to him because of her. What Sean could have done just because she had spurn his advances one too many times, or just because Max had helped her and had wanted to know her. And just the thought that he could have been even more seriously harmed made her tears impossible to stop.

"Shh, shh… please… don't cry Liz!… you're alright now! Nothing's gonna happen to you here!" Max kept on when she continued to cry and sob on his shoulder, holding him for dear life like she was afraid he would leave her any second if she didn't hold him tightly enough.

If only she knew. He had absolutely no intention to go anywhere without her, she felt definitely too good in his arms for him to just even think about leaving her ever again.
He then stroked her neck and her back gently and slowly, hoping it would help, but it only made her shudder even more in his arms and a louder sob escaped her lips, consequently making Max worry even more about her. At least until she finally found the strength to talk to him.

"I-I was so s-scared… I thought he was… I thought he… was g-going to hurt you… and god he did… and… " Liz managed to say between hiccups and sobs, wanting him to realize that she hadn't been afraid for her life, but afraid that anything could happen to him. Wanting him to understand that when she had seen Sean advancing to him first with that bottle, her whole world had stopped and the only thing that she could think about was him and his safety.

Despite the situation and though this was clearly not the right moment to feel happy, Max couldn't stop the smile that lit up his face when he heard her confession.
God, he had been all wrong obviously because her concern wasn't about herself but about him. She had been scared, for him, and the thought made him feel all giddy inside. Could he hope that this meant she cared for him just as much as he already knew he cared for her?

"Oh Liz… I'm fine too!" Max chuckled despite himself and unconsciously pulled her even closer to him, his arms encircling her waist completely now. "Liz… it was nothing… and it's gonna take more than one drunken Sean to really hurt me, believe me."

"I know that now!" she half-laughed, half-sobbed at his attempt at comfort but she didn't release her hold on him for all that.

Of course deep down she had known that Sean was no match to Max, but yet it hadn't stopped her from getting worried. And quite rightly if you just looked at the result. Max had obviously knocked Sean out but he had been harmed nonetheless. The fight had been definitely unbalanced and it could have easily degenerated.
But why should she have been surprised? After all, Sean wasn't exactly known as the honest guy, right? What else could she have expected from him?

Taking deep breaths Liz tried to find a regular respiration again and calm some down before Max would think she was some whining nutcase who collapsed under the slightest pressure, and then after a moment, when she knew that she would be able to talk normally again she slowly pulled away from him.

"I'm sorry!" she whispered a little ashamed to have broken down like she just had in front of him.

She lifted her eyes to him briefly just to see if he wasn't looking at her awkwardly, and couldn't help but smile shyly when she noticed the way his eyes seemed to light up as he smiled down at her.
God, what had she done to have this man looking at her like that? she wondered.

"Don't be… I'm glad you felt this way…" Max started before trying to correct himself when he realized that wasn't exactly how he had wanted to say it or make it sound. "I mean…"

"Yeah!" Liz nodded bashfully, understanding what he meant without needing to hear the words. Simultaneously she quickly wiped her last tears away, but she didn't dare look behind him and into the mirror, sure that she would scare herself with her appearance.

"Are you alright?" Max asked gently once he was sure that she was calm again.

"Yes!… uh… thank you Max!" Liz answered her eyes locked with his, showing him how grateful she was for what he had done for her tonight. For every little detail that had made this night so perfect, but most of all for having protected her like he had.

"For what?" Max wondered out loud, thinking that if anyone had to thank someone else here it was definitely him. After all she had treated his injury.

"For saving my life tonight!" Liz elucidated with a small smile. And though maybe 'saving her life' was a too strong word she meant it with all her heart nonetheless.

"Anytime!" Max replied, and unable to stop himself he reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Thank you too… for taking care of me like you did… actually, you did that so well that I don't even feel any pain anymore!" he then added and passed his hand over the bandage as to prove his point.

"You're welcome!" Liz said and smiled brightly now, pleased to have been able to do at least that for him. That was the least she could do anyway, because she could certainly never repaid him enough for the risks he had taken tonight.

During a few minutes afterwards an awkward silence engulfed them and they stood there face to face, staring intensively into each other's eyes without saying a word, until Max's voice momentarily broke the spell.

"Liz…" he called to her, her name a mere murmur on his lips. "There's something I… I-I have wanted to do all night… Can I?"

He wanted to do something? What did he want to do? Huh, who cared?
GOD YES, whatever pleases you! her mind instantly screamed to her and it was only by sheer will power that she managed to whisper a strangled 'yeah' instead and not let him see just how much she did want him to do whatever he had in mind. She just hoped that he was talking about what she had been wanting to do herself the whole night. Because dear lord there was nothing in this world that she wanted more than having him kissing her, than feeling his body pressed even harder against her own again and finally giving in the need and passion that she had felt burning her insides almost ever since the very moment she had seen him entering Michael's living room.
Okay, maybe that was asking too much for a first, but she would definitely settle for a kiss.

A mere second after her answer was out, she felt the soft caress of his fingers on her cheek and she unconsciously closed her eyes, waiting with barely contained trepidation for the moment to come.
Only it never did.

After what seemed like eternity to her Liz opened up her eyes again then, only to see him smiling that sexy smile of his, and the next thing she felt was her long hair cascading down her back and over her shoulders and chest as Max threaded his fingers through her silky tresses, combing them as he went.
So that was what he had wanted to do.

She knew she certainly should have been disappointed but strangely she couldn't.
As crazy at it seemed she couldn't help thinking that never had someone done something so apparently insignificant and at the same time so sensuous. Never had anyone touched her so little before and affected her that much. But that was nothing compared to what she felt when she heard his next words.

"You're so beautiful!" Max whispered hoarsely as he put the two wooden sticks that had maintained her hair up until now, down behind him, while his eyes remained constantly fixed on her.

He hadn't been lying, among other things of course, he had really wanted to do that all night, to see her with her hair down, sure that she had to be even more beautiful with it framing her face and fanning all around her and man if he had been right. Nothing could be more beautiful than this woman. No, nothing in this world.

Liz tried to answer of course, but her words couldn't pass past the huge lump that cloaked her throat at that instant. She kept wondering how someone like him could really think that… about her? Or how he could look at her like she was the most precious thing in the world, or at least the most precious to him, and if she had been trembling in his arms before, now she felt like her knees were going to give out under her because of the intensity of his gaze.

Oblivious to all the questions that were running through her head or to the effect his little inspection was having on her, Max kept admiring her for a moment, like studying every single detail about her perfect face and then, ever so slowly he leant his forehead against hers and inhaled sharply, feeling his heart rate increasing ten fold in anticipation of what he was about to say.

"Liz… I-I don't think I can… not… kiss you!" he told her in a mere whisper and his eyes half close as he fought to keep some control, or at least still enough to not make a complete fool of himself.
Man, this was crazy. What was she doing to him? he wondered.
He could honestly say that he had never felt anything remotely close to what she was making him feel right this instant, and though it was scaring him out of his mind, at the same time he was totally unable to fight those feelings. And now he wanted so much to kiss her that he was sure he would just die if he didn't do it right this second, but could he really do it? Did she want the same thing? Or would she just reject him and tell him that they had had a good time -- at least he hoped she thought so-- but she didn't want more?

"Then don't!" Liz murmured back caressing his cheek tenderly, dispelling any insecurities Max could have had a second before and making him open his eyes just long enough to see her slowly closing the distance between them.
God, thank You! That was all the answer he needed. So much answer in fact that he almost groaned out loud.

But the sound never escaped his lips because before it could even pass his suddenly very dry throat, he felt the soft and tentative brush of her lips on his own and he instantly forgot about anything else.

Liz pulled back to see his reaction and nearly moaned herself when she saw the hunger in his eyes. Oh yes, if she had had any doubts herself about this, or about him wanting this just as much before, they had vanished with just that one look at him.

Not so hesitant now she brought her lips to his once more and kissed him again, savoring her first real sample of those incredible lips that had been taunting her all night. She then wrapped her arms around his neck when she felt his hands on her hips, and stepped even closer, nestling herself into the space between his legs.

The first kisses exchanged were soft, gentle and sweet, both of them discovering the feel of the other one's lips on their owns, both of them slowly getting used to it, but the more they experienced of those tender caresses, the more they wanted, and soon their kisses grew more passionate, wilder.

Kissing Liz was even more incredible than what Max had expected it to be. The touch of her lips made him feel dizzy, the gentle stroke of her fingers at the nape of his neck gave him goose bumps, the feel of her in his arms made him shiver in delight, but when she oh so softly brushed his lower lip with the tip of her tongue, she set all of his nerve endings on fire and he knew he wouldn't last long with her. It was like an explosion, an electrical bolt spreading through his entire being, making him heady with lust, drunk with desire.

Her tongue parted his lips and when she touched his own, Max only thought was that somehow his wound had been worse than what he had realized, and he had just died and gone to heaven somewhere in between outside and this bathroom, and this was the beginning of his new life. A new life he was more than ready to embrace and enjoy.

He didn't have any notion of what was right or what was wrong anymore, he didn't know if they should be doing this or not. All he knew was this was the only thing he wanted right now. She was the only one he wanted, because with that one kiss, she had him hooked for eternity. He was hers now, he just knew it.

Finally letting himself go completely, he kissed her back just as eagerly, making his tongue slide along her own, letting it duel with hers, and loving every minute of it. But he needed more. He wouldn't be able to content himself with a simple taste of her, he knew that. He needed to feel more of her, or at least as much as he could for a first time.

Never breaking the kiss he suddenly turned around, taking Liz with him and she unexpectedly found herself where he had himself been a short instant ago, pinned against the sink behind her. She then felt his hands sliding up her thighs and the next second she let him lift her up and naturally wrapped her legs around his waist the instant he did.

Max groaned as she clutched him between her now parted thighs and nearly let go of her, but he somehow managed to lower her down safely onto the counter edge before it could happen, and only held her even more tightly afterwards, his large hands gripping at her desperately, not realizing he could hurt her.

He hadn't meant to act so roughly but god, he needed to feel her even closer to him, he needed to feel her slender body against his own hard one. To confirm how amazingly she fitted him, how perfect they were for each other.

As he laid her down, he involuntarily pressed the evident proof of his arousal against her now burning core and they both moaned into each other's mouth at the sensation. Yet much to Max's surprise, Liz didn't pull away at the contact like he expected her, but blindly sliding her hands under his shirt and hooking her fingers through the loops at the side of his jeans, she brutally pulled him even closer, making Max's hips clash into hers and nearly killing him in the process.

But Liz didn't care, she couldn't think anymore, she just needed him to relieve the ache he had created at her center and that was the only thing she thought could help her at that moment. Then the second she felt him touching her again, she unconsciously started to grind against him, forcing Max to finally tore his mouth apart from hers and let escape an almost animal growl.

His breath coming out in uneven pants now, he barely managed to whisper her name before he felt her lips grazing his neck. He moaned loudly at the unexpected contact and tangled one of his hand into her hair, while the other one found her hip again.

He didn't even know himself if he meant to stop her or not by that gesture, but Liz didn't let him enough time to make a choice. Her mouth, her roaming hands were wreaking havoc on his senses and he lost the battle before it even started. In the end he could just grip at her shirt in a desperate attempt to stop himself from doing something he would certainly regret afterwards.
But god, how was he supposed to control anything here with the way she kept rocking her hips against him? Didn't she realize how hard, and in more way than one, she was making this for him. He was going to die if she didn't stop.

But she didn't. Instead, kissing his jaw line at first, she slowly, teasingly trailed her tongue over his skin there, until she found his lips again and attacked them with a vengeance again.
God, he was driving her nuts. She was going to explode here and now. She felt so hot, so out of control. What was happening to her?

Max couldn't quite believe himself that this was really happening and he even wondered if he shouldn't pinch himself just to make sure he wasn't hallucinating, but the way she kept moaning his name each time she stopped nibbling at his lips now or sucking his tongue into her hungry mouth long enough to breathe and speak, was all the proof he needed. He had never heard his name being expelled in such a sweet and yet almost erotic manner before and he knew he would never be able to make that up himself.

When air became an issue for both of them, Max released her lips, but not wanting to let go of her completely, he attacked her throat instead until the material of her shirt prevented him from going any further. Not for long though. Before he could stop himself, his hand brushed her hair aside and the next second he was tugging at the fabric, making it slide over her shoulder, and gave himself free access to her delicate skin.

Caressing her now bare shoulder he briefly marveled at its softness, but then unable to wait any longer he let his lips burn a trail on her skin, marking her forever. Her throat, her shoulder, the upper part of her chest were on fire everywhere his mouth connected, but when he traced his tongue along the lacy edge of her top, laving the exposed skin of the swell of her breast with his attention, Liz couldn't take it anymore and moaned so loudly she was sure the whole house could have heard her.

The way she grasped his hair at that same moment was enough to pull Max out of the trance he had momentarily found himself into and make him realize what he was doing, and knowing he was approaching dangerous territory, he moved up again, following back the same path he had just taken and stopping only when he reached her earlobe, but it didn't really help him calm down for all that.

The little mewing sounds Liz made when he nibbled her skin there, or when he kissed a particularly sensitive spot just behind her ear were driving him totally crazy and seriously threatening his sanity, and he knew it wouldn't be long now before he would lose it completely.

Trying to catch his breath he momentarily stopped, holding her close instead while he rested his head against the crook of her neck, but Liz had other plans for him.

Taking the upper hand again, she reciprocated his ministrations and once more kissed the side of his throat, slowly inching her way up his skin until she finally reached his ear too and proceeded to torture Max mercilessly.
And that was all it took, that was the last straw for him.

He hissed her name hoarsely when he felt her slightly bite his earlobe, and not able to stand it any longer, he almost instantly cradled her face in his hands. Then barely letting Liz enough time to see the desire in his eyes, he crashed his mouth on hers again, bruising their lips in the process but not caring in the least.

He even winced slightly when he crushed her to him again and his wound brushed against her side but nothing, not even having his arm suddenly dislocating from his shoulder and falling at his feet could have made him detach his lips from hers at that moment. He couldn't even if he wanted, and no one would believe he did. He was just too addicted to her already for that.

God she really tasted deliciously, like nothing he had tasted before and he just knew that he would never get enough of her. She was like a drug, coursing through his veins, taking control of his actions and his entire being and the only thing he wanted was to get lost in the feeling. To experience this blissful and euphoric sensation that flowed through his system every time she touched him, every time she kissed him, for the rest of his life.

Forgotten was his injury. Forgotten was Sean Deluca and what had happened. Forgotten were Maria, Michael, and the party probably still in pretty full swing downstairs, the world only came down to Liz Campbell for Max Evans now, just like hers solely revolve around him at this instant, and not a second did they stop to think about where they currently were, or what could happen if someone suddenly came up searching for them.
