Prologue

Max and Liz dig at a frantic pace out in the desert, wanting and needing to find out what was causing the beeping. Suddenly, their shovels hit a hard surface, and a bright blue light shoots up into the sky.

“Max, something’s down there!” Liz exclaimed, excited.

Max leaned down and grabbed the object. He stood up slowly, and him and Liz stared down at it. It was inscribed with an alien symbol.

“It’s the symbol from the cave painting,” Max said, still staring at it.

“Is this from your home?” Liz asked him.

“I don’t know,” Max told her softly.

“Maybe it’s a signal…for…” Liz trailed off.

“Maybe.” Max said. “We have to show this to the others in the morning. It’s too late now.” Max continued.

Liz nodded in agreement and took the hand Max held out to her. He let her back to the blanket he had spread out.

Max turned around and looked at her. “I guess we should head home,” he said, looking at her and reaching out to brush a piece of her long hair behind her ear.

Liz leaned her cheek into his hand, turning to press a kiss on his palm when he pressed it gently to her cheek. “Is that what you really want?” she asked softly, not really knowing what was possessing her to go this far.

“Not just yet,” Max whispered back, staring into her eyes. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers.

Liz moaned softly into his mouth, and he took that opportunity to sweep his tongue into her mouth and caress his tongue with hers. Their arms wrapped around each other and they slowly sunk to the blanket, still holding onto each other.

The chill of the desert in late February was barely noticed by the two as they kissed and ran their hands over each others’ bodies.

Max began to kiss Liz’s neck and she arched into him. Her hands pushed his jacket off. Her fingers fumbled with his buttons as Max nibbled on her neck and down to her collarbone. Before Max could notice, Liz had finished unbuttoning his shirt. She pressed her hands on his chest. Max pulled back and looked at her.

“Are you sure about this?” Max asked her softly.

“Yes Max,” Liz whispered, kissing him. “I want to be with you,” she affirmed, throwing her usual restraint out the window. She sat up and pulled her jacket off. Max brought his hands to the hem off her sweater and pulled it up. Liz raised her arms slowly and he pulled it all the way off.

Liz pulled Max into another kiss and they lay back down on the blanket. She pulled his shirt the rest of the way off and their torsos pressed together, separated only by Liz’s white strapless bra. They ran their hands over the newly exposed skin, loving the feeling as they kissed deeply.

Max eventually moved his hands to the clasp on Liz’s bra and undid it. He met her eyes as he pulled it away from her chest. Liz resisted the urge to cover herself and she let Max look his fill of her uncovered chest.

“You’re so beautiful,” Max whispered to her, leaning down to kiss her again. Liz’s hands wandered all over Max’s chest and back as he moved his lips down her neck, shoulders and collarbone. He kissed all the way down to the slope of her right breast. He took the hard nipple in his mouth and sucked lightly, harder when she moaned her approval and gripped his shoulders. He continued for several moments and then switched breasts, giving the other the same attention.

As Liz sighed his name in breathless wonder, Max trailed kisses down her stomach as he unbuttoned and unzipped her pants. He moved back up to her lips and they kissed.

Liz lifted her hips easily and helped Max pull the khakis and her white panties completely off. She didn’t even feel the cold as Max stood and quickly shed his own pants and boxers. He lay back down beside her.

She grinned to herself and gently pushed Max down onto his back, moving over him and treating his neck, shoulders, chest and stomach to the same kisses he had given her. She moved all the way down. Curious, and trembling in desire, she reached for the hard evidence of Max’s arousal.

Max groaned at her innocent touch and said her name as she grasped it gently. He thought her would die as he felt Liz’s warm mouth surround his intimate flesh and suck gently. Groaning in delight, he ran his fingers tenderly through her hair. After only a few moments, he pulled away and gently brought her up to his lips. They kissed and it was his turn to roll her onto her back.

Max didn’t waste any time moving down her body. Liz spread her legs on instinct, her desire a tangible thing. Max fit himself between her thighs.

Liz cried out when Max licked the length of her core. She whimpered and called his name as he swiped his tongue over every inch of her. She felt the heat building and she felt her center begin to tighten deliciously. She felt Max’s finger ease itself into her wet heat and move in a careful rhythm. A second finger joined the first, and then his tongue swept over her clit. Liz arched almost all the way off the blanket, crying his name.

Thrilled and aroused by her reaction, Max lashed at her clit over and over until he felt her whole body stiffen. He heard her cry his name in sobbing pants as she came hard. He took in every last bit, and then crawled up to her, pulling her into his arms. As she calmed, he moved himself in between her legs and looked her in the eyes.

“Are you sure, Liz?” he asked her, trembling with his total desire for the girl he loved.

Liz moved to meet his lips and they kissed deeply. “Yes,” she whispered, as she pulled back.

Their eyes did not leave each other’s as Max slowly and carefully entered her. Liz spread her legs further and lifted them to wrap loosely around his hips. She gasped as the action caused him to sink deeper. They both felt the obstruction.

Liz could feel Max’s hesitance to hurt her so she sharply thrust her hips up to do it for him. She gasped loudly and she felt tears fill her eyes. She saw Max’s eyes widen in panic and he moved to stop.

“No Max,” Liz whispered. “Just give me a couple minutes.” She took deep breaths, watching him as he watched her. Finally she nodded and Max began to move slowly and carefully. He inched forward until he was fully sheathed.

They both moaned at the sensation and then Max started a slow rhythm of long and deep thrusts. Liz quickly picked up his rhythm and she matched him stroke for stroke.

Their breathing picked up and they let out soft moans as they quickened the pace of their lovemaking.

Max felt himself get close and he reached in between their bodies to rub his thumb over her clit in delicious circles.

Liz cried his name as her already tightening body tightened even more. She called his name in a loud gasp and moaned as she exploded. She heard Max’s cry join hers and then they stilled, holding each other.

Worried about crushing her, he rolled onto his side and pulled her into his arms. Neither of them noticed the glow that passed quickly over Liz’s stomach. It was just as quickly gone.

Feeling the chill in the air, they redressed and then crawled back into each other’s arms to sleep, the orb they had found rested nearby.

A Mother’s Sacrifice

Chapter One

Sunday, March 26, 2000
Parker Residence
7:30 am

Liz sat back slowly from her crouching position on the floor of her bathroom. She didn’t know what had brought on the sickness that had plagued her the last week.

Her life had been wonderful since her and Max had made love out in the desert a month ago. Since then, they had met up whenever they could to have rendezvous and romantic dates out in the desert, as the weather was gradually warming up to spring temperatures.

Her parents had grounded her for a week after her and Max snuck out for the whole night, but they saw each other at school. Her cheeks burned as she remembered their heated passion in the Eraser Room.

Anyway, now she had come down with some kind of virus. She sighed as she got up and went back into her room to get dressed.

Suddenly, a wave of fear passed over her at the thought that crossed her mind. No. It couldn’t be. Liz felt butterflies swimming in her still sensitive stomach as she walked in a daze over to her wall calendar. She flipped back to February and noticed the last day she had recorded her period, which was always regular. February 8th. There was no date for March. Liz stared disbelievingly down at the calendar that spelled out the facts. Her period was almost three weeks late.

She dropped the calendar and sank slowly to her bed. This couldn’t happen. She was only 16. Her hand wandered to her stomach and she placed her hand over it, imagining the possibility of a child within her. Her and Max could be having a baby.

While the thought thrilled her, she was worried about the many ramifications, not just the fact that she could be an unwed teenage mother. Max was of alien origins. There could be unforeseen complications with her possible pregnancy.

Liz shook her head to clear those thoughts away. She wouldn’t panic. Not yet. She reached determinedly over to the phone and dialed her doctor’s office. Since she didn’t have to work until 3:00, she made an appointment for noon.

Then, she automatically hit speed-dial to call Maria. When she hung up, she sighed in relief. Maria was off until 3pm, too. They would find out the truth together.

Then, she would have to tell Max…and if it was positive, her parents.

Liz lay down on her bed to wait for Maria.

Twenty minutes later, Maria arrived. “What’s wrong, chica?” she said, sitting on the side of the bed and reaching out to play with her best friend’s hair.

Without a word, Liz sat up and let Maria embrace her for a long moment. She drew a long breath. “I’m late, Maria.”

Maria gasped. “Oh, Liz,” she whispered. “What are you going to do?” she asked, hugging her friend again.

“I made an appointment for noon at the doctor’s,” Liz told her. “I have to know what I could be dealing with as soon as possible.

Maria nodded. “Do you want me to go with you?”

Liz nodded and just let Maria hold her for several minutes.

Pulling back, she nodded to Maria’s suggestion that they go down to the café to get something to eat for breakfast.

Roswell Medical Clinic
12:05 pm
Dr. Florez’s office

Liz was perched on the examining table of her doctor’s office, wearing one of those ridiculous paper gowns.

She couldn’t believe she was here, about to find out if she was having a baby. She would be examined and they would take blood and urine samples. She smiled when Maria leaned over from the chair placed by the exam table and squeezed her hand.

The door opened and Dr. Florez came into the room. She smiled sympathetically at Liz, making Liz guess that she had already been told the nature of Liz’s visit. There was no censure in her gaze.

She pressed Liz’s hand between hers, and then released her to open Liz’s file. Liz had known Dr. Florez her whole life. She had been the one who delivered her all those years before.

“When was your last period, Liz,” Dr. Florez asked her.

Liz told her the date, and also stated that she was nearly three weeks late this month.

Dr. Florez nodded, and then placed the file aside.

At her doctor’s gesture, Liz lay back and let Dr. Florez examine her.

After the exam, Liz sat up again. “Okay, you can get dressed, Liz,” Dr. Florez told her.

While she dressed, Dr. Florez continued to speak.

“I’m going to send you down to the lab to get your blood drawn. We’re also going to need a urine sample. From those we’ll run a pregnancy test. The results should be in tomorrow. We’ll rush it. I will personally give you a call and let you know. If it is positive, we’ll make arrangements to have an appointment within the week.”

Liz nodded and thanked her doctor, following Maria out the door. Time to go give her samples.

Liz’s room

An hour later, the girls were done at the lab and back at Liz’s house, in her room. Liz remembered that she and Max had plans to visit Buckley Point that night.

How was she going to keep this from him? He could get flashes. She didn’t want to tell him until she knew for sure, and even then she would be petrified.

She told Maria her fears and listened to the advice her friend gave her about just being normal.

After talking for several more minutes, Maria sighed and stood. “I have to go home and get a couple things before I start my shift. You going to be ok?”

Liz nodded and let Maria embrace her. Then she left, and Liz went to take a shower and get changed into her uniform.

(Episode placement: “Crazy”. AKA: the gerbil comes to town)

Liz sighed as she dropped her book bag onto her desk. It had been a long day. Her thoughts turned to last night when Topolsky had unexpectedly shown up at Buckley Point. The group meeting afterward had gone further into what they should do.

Now, it was Monday. Liz was nervous. Her doctor should be contacting her soon about her test results. As if on cue, the phone on her bedside table rang stridently.

Pressing a hand to her abdomen, she stared at the phone as if it could reach out and bite her. Trying to soothe her jangled nerves, she went to the phone and picked it up.

“Parker Residence, this is Liz.”

“Liz, this is Dr. Florez,” the voice on the other end of the line greeted.

Liz slowly sank to a sitting position on her bed and took a deep breath.

“Your results are in. “You’re pregnant,” she told her.

Liz listened numbly as the doctor reiterated what she’d said yesterday about Liz coming in to make an appointment with her. “I’ll come in Saturday morning,” she told the doctor, said goodbye and hung up.

Embracing herself, she curled into a ball on her bed and closed her eyes, which had filled with tears. They rolled down her cheeks slowly. What was she going to do?

Shaking, she reached over to the phone and called Maria. Maria told her that she would be right over.

Liz rolled over onto her back and stared at the ceiling while she waited for Maria to arrive.

Chapter Two

Nearly two months later…

May 14, 2000
Parker Residence
Liz’s bedroom
5 pm
(Episode placement: “Destiny”)

Liz, her face wet with the tears that were streaming down her face, threw herself down on her bed.

Her whole body ached from crying. She had called a taxi from her cell phone out in the desert and it had taken her home.

This wasn’t happening. Max had a whole other destiny and he was destined to be with Tess. Their baby wasn’t meant to be. The thought brought fresh sobs. What was she going to do about the baby now?

She placed a hand on her abdomen, thinking about her child. She was now 12 weeks into her pregnancy, or 3 months. She had had two appointments to date, the first one being the one she had set up for Saturday, April 1st and the latest one just last week…with Max.

Max. He had been wonderfully supportive of her pregnancy since he had found out. She remembered the words of love that he had whispered to her in that over-turned van they had taken shelter in all of last night. Her thoughts turned to the day she had told Max of her pregnancy.

*****

Flashback:
Friday, March 31, 2000
The desert
8pm

Liz fidgeted nervously as Max drove them out to the desert. With all the things that were going on lately, she hadn’t found the time for five days to tell Max about the baby.

They had figured out the whole Topolsky thing the other night when that doctor and Sheriff Valenti found them up at Buckley Point.

Liz felt the car come to a stop. She watched Max get out and circle around to her side. She gave him her hand to help her down.

Moments later, they were laying together on a blanket Max had brought with them.

Liz leaned on one elbow and looked down into Max’s face. Max smiled at her, and pulled her to him for a deep kiss. Liz moaned low in her throat…but she couldn’t get distracted. She had to tell him.

Gathering her courage, she began. “Max, you know how lately I’ve been sick…like I have a virus or something?”

Max nodded, his face suddenly full of concern. “Do you want to go home? Do you feel sick now?”

Liz shook her head. “Max, I…I know why I’m sick sometimes,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I saw my doctor on Sunday afternoon. They ran tests, but I already knew what it could be. I found out on Monday the result of those tests.

Max’s face was full of worry now. “What, Liz? Tell me so I can try to heal you.”

Liz almost smiled at that. He couldn’t heal this. She took his hand and pressed it to her abdomen. “I’m pregnant, Max,” she announced.

She watched Max’s face go through a myriad of emotions before he embraced her. “Liz,” he whispered. “We’re going to have a baby.” He pulled back and kissed her.

As they parted, he saw the worry on her face. “Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be okay, Liz,” he told her.

****

Present day

Liz smiled through her tears as she remembered that day. Max had been wonderful. She frowned as she remembered that she had not told her parents, even to this day.

She sighed. She would have to tell them eventually. There would be no way to hide it. Since she was already so small, her stomach was already starting to round below her belly button. She had hid it with loose shirts, but she knew she would start showing more prominently soon.

They had kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone else. Only Maria and Max knew besides herself. She supposed that was a good thing now that this had happened.

She started sobbing again when she pictured Max with Tess. That was what was meant to be. It was their destiny, they had a whole other purpose that didn’t include her. Nasedo had been right. Tess had been right.

With a start, she knew she wouldn’t be able to stay in Roswell and watch Max get closer to Tess. It would kill her. She needed to get away.

She got up and went out into the living room to find her parents. She found them seated on the couch, obviously taking a break from the café.

They both started when they saw her. Then Liz remembered that she had left the Crashdown yesterday afternoon with Alex and Maria to go find Max.

She hadn’t been home in nearly twenty-six hours. “Mom…Dad,” she greeted softly, her voice strained.

“Where have you been, Liz?” her mother asked calmly, obviously wanting to hear the story before she got angry. For that, Liz was grateful.

“I stayed at Maria’s last night, and I’m really sorry that I didn’t call…but I’ve been really upset. Max and broke up,” she told them.

Nancy took on a look of sympathy. “Honey, I’m sorry,” she said. “But next time please call, ok honey? We worry about you.”

Liz nodded, feeling guilty about lying to them. But she had no choice. She went and sat down beside her father when he gestured for her to do so. He embraced her, letting her know how sorry he felt for her, as well.

Liz pulled back from her dad and sighed deeply, pushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. “Mom, dad,” she began. “I need to get away for awhile…I can’t be here right now.”

Her parents listened as Liz expressed her sorrow over her and Max’s very recent split. When she finished, her mom spoke.

“You remember my sister, your Aunt Natalie in Miami. She’s always saying how you should come visit her. You could go there, maybe for the whole summer,” Nancy suggested.

Liz brightened a little at the thought. She hadn’t seen Aunt Natalie in 2 years. And she knew her aunt would keep anything Liz told her to herself…even a secret Liz was keeping from her parents. Liz would be able to tell her about her pregnancy and ask her advice.

“Can you call her now, Mom?” she asked. “I’d like to go as soon as possible if it’s alright with her that I stay.”

Her mother nodded and excused herself to go make the call.

Her father brushed a hand over her hair, concerned about his daughter. Liz leaned into the caress, wanting her parent’s affection.

“Are you sure you can’t work things out with Max, Liz?” he asked his daughter. “I’ve seen you two together…you look very close.”

Liz sighed. “It’s complicated, Dad…and I need some space. After the summer, I can come back with a clear head and deal with the situation. I need to be alone right now.”

Her father nodded and after hugging her one more time, her mother reappeared in the room. “It’s a go,” she told Liz. “I also called the airport in Albuquerque…and you have a flight at 10 tomorrow morning.”

“Thank you, Mom,” Liz said, a wave of relief rushing through her. “I’m going to go pack,” she said, excusing herself.

Back in her room, Liz closed the door and leaned against it for a moment. Leaving tomorrow morning would grant her the reprieve she needed. It also would prevent Max from coming after her.

Going to the phone, she called Maria. She wanted to see her before she left.

*****

Twenty minutes later, Maria arrived. Liz took one look at her face and embraced her friend. She knew Michael had broken up with Maria, and Liz felt her pain.

The two friends clung to each other, crying. Finally, they broke apart and sat together on the bed.

Liz ran her finger over the smooth comforter on her bed. “Maria, I’m leaving for Florida in the morning,” she told her friend.

Maria gaped at her. “Liz, what about Max?” she asked. “And your baby,” she added in a softer voice.

“I can’t be around Max right now, Maria,” Liz told her. She told Maria the whole story of what had happened that afternoon and how Max was meant to be with Tess.

“Liz, I’m so sorry,” Maria said. “I support you, if this is what you want to do. You have to stay in touch, though. Are you going for the whole summer?”

Liz nodded. “It’s for the best, Maria. I need some time to clear my head.”

“What are you going to do about the baby?” she asked softly.

Liz shook her head. “I don’t know. I’m going to tell my Aunt Natalie about it. She won’t tell my parents.”

“Yeah, Liz…but if you keep the baby, your parents are going to find out when you return,” Maria warned.

Liz nodded. “I know. But, like I said…I haven’t made a decision yet,” she told her friend.

“I’m going to miss you, Lizzie,” Maria said, hugging her again.

Liz returned the embrace. “Can you stay with me for awhile?” she asked.

Maria agreed and the two went downstairs to get some ice cream, trying to enjoy their last few hours together.

*****

Same night
10 pm

Liz sighed as she came back into her room after Maria left. She had asked Maria to not mention her leaving until the next afternoon. She had told Maria that she planned to write Max a letter.

Sitting down at her desk, she took out paper and a pen and got started.

My dearest Max,

Saying goodbye to you out at the pod chamber today was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

But it’s necessary. You, Michael, Tess and Isabel have a whole destiny that doesn’t include me, or our child. You’re meant to save a planet…united as the four of you. I can’t stand in the way of that.

Max, I know you may never understand my actions…but I have to leave. I need some time to figure things out. Please don’t look for me.

I will let Maria tell you things about what I am up to. I will be gone for the whole summer. It’s for the best, Max.

I will always treasure the time we spent together. I love you now, and forever…even though we must be apart.

Goodbye, Max.

All my love, Liz

Tears dripped down onto the page as Liz folded the letter neatly and placed it in an envelope, writing Max’s name on the front.

She would leave it with her parents to give to Max. She sealed it carefully, so there would be no way they could read it.

She wiped her tears away and stood. She had to pack now.

She was leaving Roswell…but she would be back. Hopefully, with a new outlook on life.

*Thank you to everyone for the feedback. For those who requested to read the challenge, I am currently trying to find it. If I can't find it on the site, I have it posted on my Word document for this story...and I will post it a.s.a.p.

Chapter Three

May 15, 2000
The airplane
Somewhere over Louisiana

Liz sat in her seat on the plane, staring out the window at the billowing clouds below. Here and there you could see glimpses of land below, tiny though it was.

She sat back in her seat after a minute, sighing. She had done it. She was on her way to Miami.

Her thoughts invariably turned to Max, remembering a conversation they’d had, soon after they had discovered that Tess was an alien…when they thought she was Nasedo.

Flashback:

Parker Residence
Liz’s balcony
May 5, 2000
(Episode placement: Between “Tess, Lies & Videotape” and “Four Square”)

“Like I said, Max…the fact that Tess is Nasedo doesn’t change the fact that you kissed her,” Liz told her boyfriend warily, turning around to face him on the balcony and crossing her arms over her chest protectively.

“Liz, she’s been manipulating me…making me feel attracted to her. Who knows what kind of powers Nasedo really has. He must have powerful ones. He’s a killer, a shapeshifter. He’s dangerous.”

Liz nodded. “I trust you, Max,” she whispered quietly. “But I can’t just forget what it looked like. It hurt me, so much,” she told him.

Max stepped forward and she let him embrace her, let him tell her how sorry he was and how they all needed to be on guard from Tess/Nasedo.

She accepted his kiss, and moaned softly. It had been nearly two weeks since they had made love and she ached for him.

They sank to the balcony floor, kissing heatedly. Their clothes seemed to melt away. Liz cried his name as his lips found one of her nipples and he sucked it hard into his mouth, giving the same attention to the other one.

Liz snaked her hand down and grasped him, stroking him in the way she knew he liked.

Max hissed and continued to suck on her nipples. Then, he moved down her stomach and lower.

She spread her legs eagerly and cried out when he slid two fingers into her moist passage and moved in a delicious rhythm. His tongue found her clit and he licked and sucked at it.

Liz cried out repeatedly as her body tightened deliciously. She came with a loud cry of his name.

When Max moved up beside her and kissed her, she pushed him over onto his back and straddled him. Without preamble, she sank down on him to the hilt.

Their mutual moans of satisfaction filled the air, as Liz immediately set a fast pace. Max met her stroke for stroke.

His hands found her nipples and he stroked and massaged, pinched and pulled. Liz cried out and moved faster.

She threw back her head and exploded around him, crying his name and dimly hearing his cry echo hers. She fell forward onto his chest and they held each other as their breathing slowed.

Present day

Liz sighed. That had been one of the last times they had made love. She would always treasure every time they had come together like that, and other ways for the rest of her life.

Closing her eyes, she fell asleep minutes later.

Miami International Airport
May 15, 2000
1 pm, EST

Liz sighed as she made her way out of the plane’s corridor into the bustling Mimi airport. She squinted at the bright sun coming in from one of the many windows and shielded her eyes. She was tired, after all; New Mexico time was only 11 am. Two hours difference. She would probably have some jet lag.

She heard a woman’s voice shout her name and suddenly she was being embraced by a slender, petite woman of about 5’4, with red hair like Liz’s mother and blue eyes. Aunt Natalie.

Liz hugged her back. Her aunt pulled away and looked her up and down. “You’ve grown up so much, Lizzie,” she exclaimed. Liz was thinking that her aunt had no idea how much she had grown up.

Then she apparently saw the sadness in Liz’s eyes and hugged her again. “Don’t worry, sweetie,” she said. “Miami’s beaches are one of the best places to deal with broken hearts. I’ve been there a few times.”

Liz just nodded and let her aunt take her arm to lead her out to baggage, and then to the parking lot. “Let’s get out of here, and get to the beach,” her aunt said. “You’ll feel a million times better out there.”

Liz secretly disagreed. She would not feel better for a long time. She helped her aunt load her bags into the trunk of her aunt’s sports car and climbed in the front seat.

******

Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of her aunt’s two-story beach house. As Liz got out of the car, she was immediately assailed by the smell of salt coming off the ocean, which was only about twenty feet behind the house.

The wind played with her long hair and she inhaled deeply. The fresh air was helping her tiredness a little. She helped Aunt Natalie bring her bags into the house and up the stairs to the spare bedroom.

Liz’s memories of the house and especially the spare bedroom where she had always stayed when visiting her aunt came back as Aunt Natalie opened the bedroom door.

The room was bright and airy, with a huge bay window complete with window seat facing the ocean.

The room was done in a soft peach, with white furniture. The carpet was soft to bare feet, Liz knew. Even the comforter and sheet set, and the sheer curtains were the same soft peach.

Liz knew she would feel very rested here. She would need it as her pregnancy continued. That thought reminded her that she needed to tell her aunt as soon as possible.

“I thought you might want to rest for awhile,” her aunt said. “Dinner is at six, and I’m making spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner,” she continued.

Liz nodded, smoothing the skirt of her pale blue summer dress down as she sat on the bed, kicking off her sandals.

Her aunt left her alone, and Liz lay back on the bed. She slowly closed her eyes, resting one of her hands over her abdomen.

In minutes, she was asleep.

Flashback:

Saturday, April 1, 2000
Doctor’s office
11 am
(Episode placement: Between “Crazy” and “Tess, Lies & Videotape”)

“How are you feeling this morning, Liz?” Dr. Florez asked, as she entered the room and closed the door behind her.

“Tired,” Liz admitted. She gestured to Max. “This is my boyfriend, Max Evans,” she introduced. “Max, this is Dr. Florez.”

“Nice to meet you,” Dr. Florez said, reaching out to shake Max’s proffered hand. “Likewise,” Max replied.

“I’m assuming Max knows of your condition?’ Dr. Florez asked, and Liz nodded. “Okay, then…today we don’t need to examine you. I just want to go over some things with you.”

Dr. Florez moved over to the calendar on her wall. “Your pregnancy test revealed that your child was conceived this past February, probably between the 20th and the 23rd. That puts you at nearly six weeks. If we go forward…” the doctor paused as she flipped pages in her calendar… “you are due on November 13th.”

Liz processed the information and looked at Max. He was looking at her and he gave her hand a quick squeeze to show his support.

Dr. Florez went on, prescribing the kind of diet Liz should follow, how she should drink plenty milk, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid caffeine products.

She also wrote a prescription for Liz to pick up some prenatal vitamins, and gave Liz several pamphlets…including ones that offered counseling and support, as well as ones that told her of her choices regarding the baby.

When the visit was finished, Liz and Max had gone off to get the vitamins and then had spent the afternoon in the desert.

Lying on a blanket that rather warm April afternoon, Liz had felt safe. Max would stand by her.

Liz’s room at Aunt Natalie’s

Liz’s eyes fluttered open slowly and she gazed around the room. Her eyes landed on the clock on the nightstand. It read 6 pm.

She slowly sat up, just as a soft knock came at her door. Her Aunt Natalie poked her head into the room. “You ready for dinner?” she asked her niece.

Liz nodded, scrubbing her face with her palms. “I’ll just get freshened up, and I’ll meet you downstairs,” Liz said softly.

When she was alone, she went into the bathroom across the hall from her bedroom and ran cool water into her palms, leaning over and bringing it to her face.

She did it a few times, finally beginning to feel more awake. She turned off the faucet and made her way downstairs to have dinner with her aunt.

172. A Mother's Sacrifice

AU/CC - Aliens, Future Fic

Max and Liz had sex in "sexual healing" causing Liz to get pregnant. Tess still comes and everything through "destiny" happens. Even though she's pregnant, Liz feels obligated to give Max up so he can follow his destiny with Tess and the Royal Four.

She later decides to give the child up for adoption, so that he or she doesn't have to suffer through the Alien Abyss...and they have a chance at a normal life.

All the while Max is trying to get Liz back...so she moves to Florida with her aunt and uncle to have the child (which she finds out is a girl). She gives her up for adoption in Florida then moves back to Roswell to complete school and move on with her life.

If you want to add that Liz asks the adoptive parents to name her Claudia, after her grandmother, then you can - but its optional.

Max is upset about Liz giving the baby up for adoption but he still wants Liz. Eventually they end up together (you can decide how...either through Seasons 2 & 3 or your own creation).

Fast-Foward 16 years

Max and Liz are happily married but have no other children

Michael and Maria are married with one son (you can decide age and name).

Alex, Isabel, Kyle, and Tess can be fit in however you want

Claudia (or whatever name you decide on), who is now around 16 or 17, has just found out that she was adopted and she wants to find her birth parents. She manges to track down Liz (you decide how) and she learns about her past and all that her parents have gone through (you can decide if she has powers or not).

More Ideas-

-Max being an over-protective father, especially when it comes to guys trying to date his precious little girl.

-Liz getting some sort of alien powers, different from what the others can do.

You can decide how people react to Liz being pregnant & you can either start in the future and do flashbacks or just start at the begining.

*sigh of relief*

Okay thats all. lol.

Chapter Four

Same day, same time
Aunt Natalie’s beach house

Liz slowly sank into a chair at the dining table. She looked at her aunt as her aunt entered the room bearing a large salad bowl, filled with delicious looking Caesar salad.

Liz’s stomach growled in hunger and she almost smiled. “Can I help you with anything?” she asked her aunt.

“No, that’s okay, honey,” her aunt replied. “Everything’s ready.”

Minutes later, they were seated together at the table, enjoying the delicious meal of spaghetti and meatballs with the Caesar salad.

Liz’s appetite had apparently returned, and she cleaned her plate. She helped her aunt bring the dishes out to the kitchen but her aunt insisted that they be done later. They should talk and catch up first.

Clutching the glass of lemonade her aunt had given to her, Liz sat on the soft pale blue couch beside her aunt, turning her body to face her.

“It’s been so long since I’ve seen you, Liz…we really need to catch up,” her aunt remarked.

Liz only nodded, feeling nervous. “You can go first,” she offered.

Her aunt nodded. She talked about her job at the local children’s hospital in downtown Miami and how much she loved it. She had taken a trip to New York City last summer for a week and had loved every minute, she promised Liz that she would show her the pictures. She told Liz how she dated often, but never found that connection with anyone…but that it suited her just fine. She liked her independence.

When she finished speaking, she looked at Liz. Liz was wearing a faint smile, but Natalie could see the sadness behind those brown eyes…and her heart broke for her niece and whatever she had been through. She patted Liz’s hand softly. “Talk to me, Liz,” she implored softly.

Liz nodded and began. She skimmed over her freshman year, and barely mentioned Kyle. She said he had been completely casual.

Then a small smile crossed her face when she described to her aunt how she had found Max…that she had been his classmate for years but they were never really friends. Of course she left out all the alien details.

She told the whole story, without the alien stuff, to her aunt…including the way Max made her feel and their first breakup. She described their months apart as well.

She felt her face heat as she described how they had become close again…remembering the passion of those February nights. She didn’t even feel shy when she told her aunt that she and Max had made love.

She continued, knowing it was going to get difficult now. She swallowed hard and described those first symptoms. She described how she went to the doctor and how she found out she was pregnant.

Surprisingly, her aunt didn’t chastise her, she simply remained quiet and let Liz continue.

Liz continued, telling her aunt how she had only told Maria and Max the truth. She barely suppressed a grimace as she described how Tess had literally blown into town and destroyed her happiness.

With tears beginning to fall, Liz admitted how she and Max had finally said “I love you.” But that in the same day they had broken up.

Her aunt leaned over and embraced her as Liz finished with how she had needed to get away and figure out what to do.

“Do your parents know about the baby, Liz?” her aunt asked carefully, smoothing Liz’s hair away from her face.

Liz only shook her head. “Do you think Max is going to try to find you? It’s his child,” she reminded her niece.

“Yes, he’ll probably try…but I swore Maria to secrecy. I don’t even know if I can keep the baby now,” she admitted. “So much as happened. I want my child to have a wonderful life.”

“And it will,” her aunt said firmly. “Whether you keep it, or give it up for adoption.”

Adoption. For the first time, Liz allowed that thought to enter her head. It would probably be the best for everyone if she just gave her child up, let him or her be raised by loving parents who could provide for it better than Liz herself, at sixteen, ever could.

Her aunt saw the look of contemplation on her niece’s face. “Give all your options some serious thought, Liz,” she advised. “Either way, this decision is going to impact the rest of your life. And you don’t have to worry, I don’t think it’s my place to tell your parents about the baby. I’ll leave that to you.”

Liz nodded, managing a small smile. She looked over to see her aunt wearing a pensive expression.

“I’ve never told anyone this,” she began. “But I’ve been in your situation.” Liz looked surprised, but stayed quiet, wanting to hear this.

“I was a freshman, attending college at Yale. I met a wonderful guy at a Halloween party. We hit it off, and left the party together. We made love that night. I know it was impulsive, but he was sweet and a fantastic lover. The results of that night were realized right before Thanksgiving that year. I became pregnant.”

“Now, Matt…my baby’s father and I had been out on a few dates, but it wasn’t serious…although we continued to make love over that month before I found out. I was terrified to tell him…and it turns out I was right to be terrified. When I told him, he ran from me, after refusing to have anything more to do with me or the baby.”

“I was alone and scared. Your mother was attending a different college, and I felt that there was no one to turn to. I hid my pregnancy from everyone. I didn’t start to show until my fifth month…around the beginning of the following April. I hid my body under sweatshirts, despite the rapidly warming weather.”

“Over the summer, I stayed at a shelter for pregnant women…telling your mother and my parents that I was staying with a friend. It was there that I made the difficult and in the end, painful decision to give up my child for adoption.”

“I gave birth on a humid night in early August. It nearly broke my heart, but I saw my baby, a little girl, only once before I signed the papers over to who would be her new parents. They’re from New Jersey, and they have been there ever since gave birth. I don’t know where my daughter is now. She’s almost 23 years old now.”

Her aunt fell silent. Liz reached over and hugged her. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

Her aunt nodded against her shoulder, pulling back.

“That’s why I want you to really think before you make a decision,” she told Liz.

Liz nodded. “How would you like some ice cream?” her aunt asked.

Liz smiled and followed her aunt out to the kitchen. She felt a little better. Maybe her healing was already beginning.

Chapter Five

Roswell, New Mexico
May 15, 2000
5:30 pm, EST (3:30 pm-Roswell)

Maria looked up as the bell above the door of the Crashdown dinged and in walked an exhausted Max and a suspicious-looking Isabel. She sighed to herself. That didn't take long. Liz had taken off mere hours ago. Time to start covering for her.

She hadn't seen Max since yesterday afternoon, the day the aliens found out about their supposed destiny. Max didn't know about Liz yet. She didn't picture the conversation she would undoubtedly have to have with Max to be pleasant. Max would demand answers, and she knew Isabel would back him 100%, and well she should.

But Maria was determined to keep Liz's secret to herself. She was Liz's friend first, and to be honest; Maria felt that Liz needed the time away from Roswell. She envied Liz, and she wanted to go visit her in a few weeks' time.

Maria watched Max and Isabel slide into a booth, sitting across from each other. Damn, Maria thought. Of course they're in my section.

Nervously, she went over to the table. "Hi guys," she said softly.

Max looked up at her. Maria almost gasped aloud. She had never seen such pain and tiredness on a human being before. Oh, wait; she had seen it on Liz, yesterday.

"Is Liz working this morning?" Max asked her in a low voice.

Feeling sorry for him, Maria slid into the booth beside. She took a breath. Better just to say it and put it out there. "Liz isn't here," she informed him. "She's distraught and heartbroken and she decided to leave for the summer. Before you ask, she left this morning and doesn't want anyone else to know where she is. She's needs the time away."

Isabel didn't waste any time. "Maria," she began in a barely controlled whisper, "Don't you think that Max needs to know where Liz is? She's carrying Max's child."

Maria covered her surprise. Max must have told Isabel about the baby. "Look, I feel really bad for both you and Liz, Max," she said. "But I think Liz needs time away to clear her head...and she specifically asked me not to tell anyone where she is. I know she'll be back," Maria offered. "She did say that much...I just don't know when."

Surprisingly, Max hadn't said a word. He just looked even more defeated, if that were possible. Finally, he looked up. "What is she going to about the baby?" he asked. "I have a say in what she does, you know," he informed her. "Do her parents know?"

Maria shook her head. "No. And she had no idea what she's going to do about the baby yet. Her emotions are all over the place."

"Can you tell her that I just need her to call or write?" Max asked. At Maria's nod, Max sighed. "Didn't she leave me anything, a note; at least?"

Maria nodded, remembering what Liz had told her. Mr. Parker had given her the letter that morning, for her to give to Max when she saw him. She slowly drew it out of the pocket in her skirt and handed it to him.

He opened it quickly and was absolutely silent as he read it. He looked up, handing the letter to Isabel for her to read. "I can't believe she feels like she can't be near me," he cried. "I don't want to be with Tess, she knows that."

"I know, Max," Maria said. "I wish I could tell you more, but this is the way Liz wants it, and I want to be there for her."

Max sighed. "I don't like it," he admitted. "But I do understand. But make no mistake...I am going to find her...one way or another." With that, he got up and stalked out of the cafe.

With one last look of reproach at Maria, Isabel followed him.

When they were gone, Maria leaned her head in her hands and sighed. She had no doubt Max would try to find Liz. Either he would get her to break down and tell him, or he would look for her.

She would call Liz after her shift and tell her.

Aunt Natalie's home
May 15, 2000
9 pm, EST (7 pm-Roswell)

Liz lay on her bed at her aunt's house, just trying to relax. She did feel a little better from talking to her aunt. She couldn't stop thinking about adoption. She did think it might be the best option for her.

But could she do it without telling Max? Wen she returned home without their baby, he would demand answers, and then he would probably hate her once he learned what she had done. But as much as Max hating her would kill her, maybe it would be better. Max could be with Tess. it was their destiny. Her and Max's baby was never supposed to be.

She sighed. She would definitely give the matter more thought, but she knew she was leaning toward giving her child up. The phone rang on the night table beside her bed.

She reached over and answered it. "Hello?"

"Lizzie?" Maria's voice came over the line. "I have to talk to you," she said.

"Hi Maria," Liz greeted. "What's going on?"

"Max and Isabel were in the cafe this morning, Liz," Maria told her. "Isabel knows about your pregnancy, and I told them both you had gone away for awhile."

"Maria, please tell me Max doesn't know where I am," Liz responded, her heart pounding with worry, and the love she still felt for Max.

"No, but Liz...I get the feeling he's not going to give up on finding out, he wants to find a way to track you down. Liz, will you write him or something? I feel so bad for him."

"I will, Maria...but Max has to accept his destiny with Tess, it's what's supposed to happen. I'm thinking about putting the baby up for adoption."

"Are you sure you can do that, Lizzie?" Maria asked, her worry evident in her tone. "It'll be so hard, and when Max finds out....I just don't know if you can live with giving away the child you created with Max...you know, your soulmate," Maria continued.

Liz sighed. She knew it would be hard. And Maria had made some valid points. But she had to think about her child. It would have a better upbringing with parents who were together and could provide for it better than she and Max, who were both still teenagers, ever could.

"You're right about all of it, Maria," Liz told her friend. "And I still haven't made a decision. But I won't lie to you, adoption seems my best route," she said, continuing to tell Maria the pros that she thought would come with adoption, and how she had to think of her baby first.

She went on to tell Maria in a low voice about Aunt Natalie, and what her aunt had done about her own teenage pregnancy.

Maria was quiet for long moments. "Can I tell Alex, Liz?" she asked. "I need someone in my corner back here, and he doesn't even know yet. I just talked to him, and it seems Princess Isabel has broken up with him, again because of what they heard on the orbs. She insists that it's not about being with Michael, she just needs space. Thank God she doesn't want to be with Michael, Liz," Maria continued, "because I'm gonna be trying to win him back."

Liz just listened to her friend go on until Maria finally changed the topic.

"My mom gave me the okay to spend two weeks in Florida with you at Aunt Natalie's this summer," Maria announced excitedly. "You know your Aunt loves me, but just see if I can come up soon."

Liz agreed and the two exchanged goodbyes and hung up.

Left in the silence of her room, Liz slowly went about getting ready for bed. She was emotionally exhausted. She slipped beneath the covers and switched her light off, lying back.

Her eyes slowly closed.

It wasn't long before she was deeply asleep.

Dreams - Liz

In her dreams, Liz sat in a oak rocking chair, rocking slowly and cradling her newborn daughter in her arms. The room around her was painted a cheery yellow, and already filled with beautiful all oak furniture and stuffed animals.

She turned to see Max in the doorway. He was wearing a sweet smile as his eyes never left hers. He came toward, kneeling down beside the rocker, reaching out to stroke his daughter's small head, and kissing Liz softly. "How are my girls?" he asked lovingly.

Liz just smiled. "She's asleep, but I don't want to let her go just yet...she's so perfect, so precious, I can't believe she's ours."

Max smiled but then frowned slightly. "You know what would make my life perfect, Liz?" he asked. "Marry me, be my wife."

Liz gaped at him in astonishment as he held up a sparkling diamond engagement ring. Her heart ached. She hadn't wanted this to happen. As much as she loved Max, she couldn't marry him. It wasn't supposed to be.

She shook her head slowly. "Max, I...as much as I love you, my reasons for not marrying you still stand. You and I can't be together. We will raise our daughter, but we can't be together....you have a destiny that doesn't include me."

"Liz, how many times have I told you I don't care about that? You're my world...you, and our daughter...I can never be with anyone else," Max whispered passionately, trying not to awaken the baby.

Liz stared at him. She hardened her heart. "Max, I just can't. Please don't ask me to."

Max stared at her for a long minute. Then he stood and abruptly walked out of the room. She heard him stomp down the stairs.

Tears filled her eyes. She wished that she hadn't had to do that. It was breaking her heart all over again.

Slowly, she got up and put her daughter down to sleep carefully. She turned and scrubbed the tears from her eyes and went to fetch the baby monitor.

A sparkle glinting from the floor caught her attention and she knelt. She brought her hands to her mouth to cover her sobs as she realized Max had left the ring behind. She picked it up and gazed at it.

She slowly sank down further onto the floor, her tears flowing freely now. She didn't know what she wanted now.

******

Reality

Liz opened her eyes slowly, sitting up. She brought her hands to her eyes to rub them, and was not surprised to discover tears rolling down her cheeks.

That dream had been so bittersweet. She could see that happening. She would have to do something to make sure that never happened.

She didn't know if she could reject Max in real life.

A Mother's Sacrifice; ADULT (Chapter Six, 6/2/05)

Post by roswellgirl_21 »

*Thank you to everyone for the wonderful feedback! Honestly, I have to agree with most people's view that Liz should be telling Max about her plans for their child. If I was in her position, I would tell my boyfriend.

However, the storyline is a challenge that I have accepted. But I will have a Dreamer guarantee on this story! Things will work out, so be patient. :D

Chapter Six

Two months later...

Wednesday, July 19, 2000
Michael's apartment
Roswell, NM; 10 pm

It had been a long two months since Liz had left Roswell, Maria thought to herself as she slowly climbed the familiar stairway to Michael's apartment for the latest group meeting. She missed her best friend terribly, but she was also excited because she was leaving for Florida to see Liz this weekend.

She had told no one of her plans, knowing that Max would invariably find a way to follow her. Speaking of Max, he had not been able to convince Liz to tell him where she was, and the not knowing was taking a toll on him. He looked exhausted and downright sad most of the time.

Maria herself was beginning to have doubts about the wisdom of Liz not telling Max about where she was. In every conversation Maria had with her friend, Liz would get closer and closer towards making a final decision about her baby and its fate. Maria had decided to talk to Liz again about telling Max. Max did have a right to know what Liz did with their child.

Liz was now nearly 22 weeks along, already five & a half months. She had told Maria about every symptom she had experienced and how she was showing quite a bit. Maria honestly didn't know how Liz would give up her baby when the time came; for the way Liz talked about her unborn child, was full of love and tenderness. She had also finished off her sophomore year at a local high school her aunt had enrolled her in.

All these thoughts ran through Maria's head as she entered Michael's apartment to find everyone there. They all looked at her, but no one spoke. Even after all this time; Max, Isabel, and Maria herself were the only ones who knew of Liz's pregnancy.

Maria looked over at Michael and felt her heart jump at the sight. She had been trying for two months to get him back. He really was a stonewall. But she wouldn't give up. She knew he wanted her, she didn't miss the longing looks he threw her when he thought she wasn't looking.

Maria straightened her spine. Tonight. After the meeting, Michael wouldn't know what hit him. She would make him hers again before the night was over. She sank into a seat on the couch beside Max. Isabel sat on the other side of the couch. Tess, Alex and Michael had chairs. Lastly, Kyle had joined their meetings for the past six weeks, now officially a member of the "I Know An Alien" club. He sat in a chair near Tess.

The meeting began. The "czechs" talked about their rapidly developing powers. With Tess' advanced knowledge from Nasedo, she had been teaching the other three some techniques. Max was the most reluctant, but he did participate now and then.

It pleased Maria to note that Max had not turned to Tess this whole time. In fact, he had told the blonde repeatedly that there was no future for them. Tess seemed to back off slightly, but now and again she would try something new.

Their so-called enemies had yet to come to town, but the "czechs" felt it was only a matter of time, hence the reason they continued to work on their powers.

The meeting drew to a close without a single mention of Liz as the "czechs" made plans to have a practice session out at the quarry this weekend. Maria raised her eyebrows. This had been the first meeting that no one had grilled her about Liz.

Maria watched everyone leave, her eyes on Michael. When they were alone, he turned and stared at her.

"Aren't you leaving?" he asked, looking confused.

Maria stood and approached him. "And what if I said I didn't want to leave?" she asked him, tilting her face up to his as she stood inches away from him.

Michael sighed. "Maria, we've been over this. It's finished between us," he told her, gulping at her nearness. He was in trouble. He wanted her so badly.

Maria smiled knowingly. She knew she would break him. "Michael, I don't think it is," she said softly. "I love you, Michael...and I know you love me. You aren't with Isabel, can't we just be together?" she asked.

Michael looked away for a second before looking back at her, right in her eyes. "Maria, I just think it's better if we stay away...because someday, I have to leave. I have to get on a spaceship and go home...and it'll hurt a lot more then."

Maria looked dumbfounded. That was his reason? "Michael, I don't care about that. We've got now, and I already know you can't make any promises to me for the future. But I just want you."

Michael opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, Maria leaned up on her tiptoes to press her mouth to his. His arms came around her instantly and he lifted her slightly as they both deepened the kiss.

Maria moaned softly as he pulled back, setting her back on her feet. "Can you really stay away from me, Michael?" she asked, cupping his chin in her hand softly.

Michael shook his head. "No. I do love you, Maria," he admitted.

Maria felt her heart sing with joy at his words. This was the first time he had said those words...and this time it wasn't in the context of breaking up with her. "I love you," she whispered.

Their lips met in another passionate kiss, and once again they were in each other's arms. Michael lifted her and Maria eagerly wrapped her legs around his hips as he stumbled toward the couch. Maria lay back, pulling Michael with her as their legs and arms entwined.

Their passion grew rapidly as they shared long, deep and drugging kisses. They kissed almost desperately, hungry for each other's touch and embrace. Michael's mouth wandered down her throat as Maria threw her head back. His hands caressed her curves up to her bare shoulders to play with the thin straps of her red tank top.

Maria moved her hands down to the hem of her shirt and pulled it up and off. Michael watched her in awe. He hadn't expected that. He groaned as he took in her half naked chest, covered only by a black satin strapless bra.

Maria didn't have to wait long for the touch of his lips on her overheated skin. He trailed his mouth over her collarbone and shoulders, moving down slowly to the slope of her breasts. He looked up at her and seemed to ask permission with his eyes while his fingers moved to the clip of her bra.

Maria nodded wordlessly and felt him fumble with the back clasp for a long torturous moment. She finally felt it loosen and felt the cool air hit her bare chest. She didn't move as Michael tossed her bra to the floor to join her shirt. His gaze wandered over her hungrily. Maria felt herself flush under his intense gaze.

Michael slowly moved down to touch his tongue to one of her nipples. Maria's eyes fluttered closed at the sensation and she arched in pleasure as Michael drew the erect bud into his mouth, sucking just hard enough. He continued for long moments, then treating the other to the same pleasure.

When he moved back up to kiss her, Maria moaned against his mouth. "Too many clothes, Michael," she gasped out, knowing she wanted to feel him skin to skin. She wanted to make love with him.

Michael stared at her for a long moment, reading what she wanted in her eyes. He stood abruptly and yanked off his shirt, tossing it to the floor before reaching to lift her in his arms.

Maria let him carry her to his bed, her heart pounding in anticipation. He set her down beside the bed and they kept their eyes on each other as they rid themselves of their remaining clothes and climbed into the bed.

Once there, they reveled in each other's touch as their arms and legs entwined while they kissed. Michael moved down her body once more only this time he began to place kisses on her stomach and lower.

Maria felt Michael spread her legs and move his head and upper body between them. At the first touch of his tongue on her sensitive flesh, Maria cried his name. Those cries became frequent moans as Michael swept his tongue over every inch of her flesh. He slowly inserted a finger in her passage and moved it in and out. His exploring tongue found her clit next, and Maria cried out again. "Yes, Michael," she said, feeling him focus on the spot while continuing to move his finger in her passage. Maria felt her body wind tighter and tighter like a coiled spring and her cries grew louder. Finally, she let go. "God, Michael, yes!" she screamed.

Michael crawled back up her body and kissed her, wearing a feral grin. He looked immensely pleased with himself. He let her come back down to earth while he continued to kiss her mouth and neck.

Maria suddenly got a grin of her own and she gently pushed her love onto his back and straddled his waist. She leaned down and kissed him. She moved kisses down his neck and shoudlers, and over every inch of his chest and stomach, moving her body down lower and lower.

Michael hissed and whispered her name as a growl of pleasure as her hands came in contact with his hardness. She stroked it experimentally and watched him as his eyes closed and he arched his head back. Her mouth touched him next, the tip of her tongue snaking out to lick at him. Michael groaned and then said her name as she sucked him into her mouth eagerly. She moved up and down his shaft for long moments, listening to Michael groan her name in a mantra.

Finally, he pulled her back up to him and they kissed, while he rolled her underneath him. Maria automatically spread her legs, wanting to feel him inside her. Michael met her eyes.

"Maria, are you sure?" he asked her. Maria looked at him for a moment and then she nodded.

"Yes, Michael," she said, "I want you to make love to me."

She saw Michael reach over to his nightstand drawer. she heard him open it and find a condom, which he held up. "Protection," he said with a grin.

Maria smiled back and watched him as he put it on, then moving back over her and settling in between her legs. She felt him brush up against her and she shivered. Michael's hands came up to cup her face in his hands as he slowly inched his way inside her.

He moved slowly, taking care not to hurt her as he finally was met with her barrier. He met her eyes and reached for her hands.

Maria felt her heart melt as she allowed him to entwine his fingers with hers and hold on while he pressed forward. She gasped and felt tears spring to her eyes at the sharp, stinging sensation that flew through her lower body.

Michael immediately stilled and let her calm down. He watched her face as she breathed in and out, taking deep breaths and then she smiled.

Taking that as a hint, Michael slowly began a gentle rhythm that was not rushed or hurried. Maria easily matched his rhythm, her pain disappearing as a wonderful pleasurable sensation swept through her body. They moved together for long moments, their heat slowly building higher and higher.

Maria cried out when Michael reached in between their bodies to manipulate her clit while he continued to move inside her. Within moments, she came with a cry of his name. She heard him join her as she slowly came back down to earth.

Bodies still entwined, they lay together. Their hands slowly unclasped and Michael rolled to his back, bringing her close to his side. Maria turned on her side and snuggled into his chest. Their breathing slowed and evened out. Within moments, they were asleep.

Chapter Seven

Miami International Airport
Saturday, July 22, 2000
3 pm, EST (1 pm, Roswell)

"Liz!" an excited voice cried over the din of the crowded airport. Before Liz could take a breath, the whirlwind also known as Maria DeLuca rushed toward her and hugged her tightly.

"My God, look at you!" Maria exclaimed, as she pulled back to take a view of her best friend wearing a simple white cotton sundress. She was clearly showing now at five and a half months.

Liz just smiled at her friend. She was thrilled to see her. She waited while Maria greeted Aunt Natalie and then the three headed out to the car.

"So how are you feeling, Liz?" Maria asked her friend once they were in the car and headed back to the beach house.

"I'm okay," Liz responded. "The baby's doing well, and I feel a lot better now that the morning sickness is over!" she said with a laugh. Liz's morning sickness had lasted well into her fourth month, but had finally abated. "My cravings are really strange, you know. I like Tabasco on everything," she said to her friend.

Maria's eyes widened a little with that revelation. The Tabasco sauce was the czech's food flavoring of choice.

"She certainly goes through those bottles I buy her," Aunt Natalie added.

"I've also been eating jello on cereal, and pickle sandwiches with Mayo," Liz shared.

Maria wrinkled her nose. Weird. "Have you felt the baby kick yet?" she asked.

"No, not yet," Liz answered, running a hand over her abdomen. "But my doctor here says it could be any day now."

Maria nodded at Liz through the rearview mirror. It was mere moments later when they arrived at the beach house and helped Maria bring her things in, not letting Liz carry too much.

Half an hour later...

"How are you, Maria?" Liz asked, once the two girls were seated together on Liz's bed, sipping at some lemonade.

Maria smiled. "I finally broke down Michael, Liz," she told her friend, a note of excitement in her voice as she remembered the past few days with Michael. "On Wednesday, we had a talk after one of our group meetings and he admitted he loves me. We made love, all night," she whispered.

Liz's eyes widened. "Did you use anything?" she asked softly. Maria nodded, and Liz sighed in relief. She didn't Maria to go through what she was going through.

As Maria related how they had spent the whole night together, and then the scene between her and her mom the next morning, her mind flashed back on entering her house the morning after.

Flashback:

DeLuca residence

Maria unlocked the front door of her home and opened the door as quietly as she could, quickly entering and closing the door softly behind her. She stepped on feather light feet towards her room, practically inching down the hallway.

She opened her door just as quietly and slipped in, closing it. When she turned towards her bed, her heart dropped into her stomach.

Her mother was sitting on her still-made bed, wearing a robe. She had her arms crossed, and wore an expression Maria had seen before: the night Maria had let Michael sleep in her bed with her.

"Hi Mom," Maria said softly, looking down at the floor to avoid her mother's eyes.

"Maria," her mother replied crisply. "Where have you been all night?"

Maria looked up at her mother and saw there was no point lying to her. She knew her mom would know if she lied.

"Look, Mom," she began. "I'm not going to lie to you. I was with Michael."

"Maria, you are too young to be having sex with that boy! I am responsible for you until you are eighteen, and I don't want you having a baby at your age!" her mother yelled, getting up and pacing the floor. "I love you, Maria...and I'm trying to protect you."

"Mom, I know," Maria said softly. "We were safe," she told her.

Maria's mom looked her straight in the eyes. "I'm glad to hear it, Maria," she replied, "but sometimes things happen when you least expect them. Passion rules young people and their hormones. There are a lot of teenage mothers out there, don't end up like them. I don't agree with what you've done, but there's nothing I can really do to stop you. Does he love you, and do you love him? Cause if he hurts you, I will not be responsible for my actions," she finished.

"I love him with all my heart, Mom," Maria responded, and he loves me. I will be safe, I promise you."

Maria's mom sighed deeply and nodded. "I'm taking you to the doctor. You should go on the Pill as soon as possible."

Maria nodded wordlessly and let her mother come over to hug her and kiss her cheek. Her mom pulled back and looked at her. "No more staying out all night with him," she said. "You stick to your curfew from now on."

Again, Maria nodded as her mother left the room, closing the door behind her.

"I'm surprised she still let you come out here," Liz told her friend when Maria finished speaking.

"I know," Maria replied, tracing her finger over the patterns in the bedspread. "But I'm so happy, Liz," she said. "I only wish you would return to Roswell with me and let Max be a part of this baby's life."

Liz sighed. She wished that she could, more than Maria could ever know. "Maria, I can't," she said. "It's better this way. I've made up my mind. I'm giving up the baby for adoption. I'm staying here for fall semester, seeing as the baby isn't due until November, anyway. Then, I'll come home. I've already told my parents that I am enrolling in fall semester at the high school here."

"You still aren't going to tell Max, or your parents, are you?" Maria asked.

Liz shook her head. "I know it seems selfish, Maria...but this child will have a better life with parents who can give it everything it could ever want. And it will be danger back in Roswell, what with Max's enemies and everything...those same enemies Max and Isabel's real mother warned them about? I won't put my child through that."

"Wouldn't Max have to sign off his parental rights, though, Liz?" Maria asked. "I mean, you are bound to run into a few obstacles."

"I know, Maria," Liz replied. "And I will deal with them as they come."

Maria saw how serious her friend was, and changed the subject. She would discuss it further with her friend before her visit was over.

*****

Two weeks later...
Sunday, August 6, 2000
10 am, EST (12 pm, Roswell)

The last two weeks had flown by. Liz and Maria had swam and sunbathed. They had gone shopping in town, and had eaten at a few of the nice restaurants. They had spent a lot of time with Aunt Natalie, seeing all her favorite spots (some for the second time).

Maria sat on the plane, waving out the window at her best friend and Aunt Natalie, despite the fact that she could barely see them. She sighed. She had failed to convince Liz to come home.

Despite Maria's best efforts, Liz remained firm in her decision to give her baby away, even when she had felt the child kick for the first time last week.

She smiled as she remembered how Liz had come into her room in the middle of the night, excited about it. Maria had put her hand on friend's stomach, feeling the strength of the little kick.

That night, Maria had thought her friend was wavering. Liz had burst into tears after her baby had stopped kicking. Maria had comforted her and they slept in the same bed the rest of the night, just talking about the simpler times in both of their lives.

Yet, the next morning, Liz's resolve was firmly back in place, and Maria made zero progress with her.

As the plane began taxiing down the runway, Maria's worry didn't ease. She hoped her friend could get through this adoption. Maria would no longer be able to visit her friend, as school started again next month.

She planned, however, to be in constant contact with Liz. Her best friend would need her.

Chapter Eight A

Aunt Natalie’s home
Miami, Florida
Monday, November 13, 2000
Early morning, 4 am

Liz lay in her bed at Aunt Natalie’s wide awake, for her whole body ached. She gasped and then moaned in pain as a sharp pain shot across her abdomen. She moved her hand to her stomach and was amazed to find it was growing tighter and tighter. Liz gasped for breath. It was a contraction.

She could be in labor. She knew her due date was today, but had been informed that only 5% of women actually gave birth on their due dates. Liz tried to calm herself, breathing slowly and evenly, waiting for the tightness to go away. It eased a couple minutes later, and she relaxed, glancing over at the clock. It was 4:05 am. She reached for her watch that glowed in the dark and slipped it on.

Slowly, she got out of bed and went to the closet to fetch her white cotton bathrobe, which she slipped over her nightgown. She pressed her hand to her stomach and walked slowly towards her aunt’s bedroom to wake her.

“Aunt Natalie,” Liz said softly, leaning down closer to the bedside. She reached out and gently shook her aunt’s shoulder.

Her aunt opened her eyes and saw her. Then she sat up. “Liz, honey, is something wrong?” she asked, seeing how Liz’s hand remained on her stomach.

“I just had a contraction,” Liz whispered. “I think I could be in labor.”

Her aunt didn’t say a word, she just stood and quickly went about getting dressed, afterwards taking Liz’s arm and helping her downstairs. Liz had packed a bag for the hospital last week, and her aunt took it for her.

Minutes later, they were in the car and on their way to the hospital.

The hospital
4:30 am
Same day

Liz sat on a chair in the lobby, watching her aunt while she talked to a nurse and filled out Liz’s paperwork for her. She checked her watch. She wondered when or if she would get another contraction.

As soon as the thought hit her, she gasped and nearly doubled over as a second contraction hit her hard. She struggled to breathe evenly and tears came to her eyes. This hurt, a lot. She wanted Max, she wanted her parents, she wanted Maria. She just didn’t want to be alone.

Her aunt noticed her and hurried over. “Liz,” she said softly, reaching to smooth Liz’s hair back from her face and then kiss her forehead, giving her niece all her attention. Directing herself to the nurse nearby, she said: “Can we get this girl a room, please…and have her checked out? We think she’s in labor.”

For once, the nurse seemed to act quickly and found an attendant to wheel Liz to a room.

Minutes later, Liz was in the stark white hospital room, with its pristine white sheets, wearing a simple hospital gown. Her contraction had eased. Liz knew that the two contractions she had had were 25 minutes apart.

The door opened and Liz’s ob-gyn walked into the room. Her name was Dr. Hanson, and Liz had been seeing her since she had arrived in Florida. “So, this could be the big day, huh, Liz?” she asked her patient.

Liz smiled wanly and lay quietly while the doctor examined her and then nodded briskly as she discarded the gloved she had been wearing. “You’re in labor, honey,” she told Liz. “You’re at 2 centimetres, and it seems to be moving fast towards 3. You’re doing well.”

“My contractions are still 25 minutes apart,” Liz said. “I’ve only had two so far.”

The doctor nodded. “You’ll have a lot more,” she predicted. “I’m going to give you an epidural for your pain,” she told her.

Liz’s hospital room
10 am
Same day

Liz was no longer the picture of calm she had been six hours ago. She was sweaty and exhausted, and she could barely feel her aunt holding her hand or feeding her ice cubes. Her contractions were now only 6 minutes apart.

The doctor had been right. Liz was progressing quickly, and she was now nearly eight centimeters dilated. The pain was growing worse, but the epidural was helping. Aunt Natalie had remarked that it would have been much worse without it.

Liz breathed her way through the next contraction. That one was only 5 minutes apart from the last one! She was getting closer. Her thoughts turned toward the adoptive parents she had selected for her child. The adoption agency Doctor Hanson had referred her to had found them.

They were a young couple in their early 30’s, married for 8 years. The husband was a lawyer, the wife was a schoolteacher for Grade 2 children. They had tried unsuccessfully to have children for over five years. They were really nice, and Liz had liked them instantly. Their last name was Winters. Gloria and John Winters.

Liz had signed all the adoption papers just recently, carefully forging Max's signature on the documents. When asked about Max, Liz explained he was visiting his older sister in New York. The Winters seemed to buy it, but Gloria had looked concerned when she had learned Max probably wouldn't be back in time for the baby's birth.

Despite her pregnancy, Liz had done well at school, the first quarter of her junior year. She had been attending school up until the end of the last week, at which point she had opted to take a week or more, depending on when the baby was born. She still planned to complete her assigments on time and make up any tests. Her teachers were understanding and because of her grades in the past, and the stellar work she was giving them, they were going to provide make-ups with no hassle.

Liz's dreams of Max had not ended. She still loved him as much as ever had, and she was dreading going home at the end of the semester to face him. She would have a huge challenge at Christmas, when her parents were coming down to see her. Liz would have to hide her emotions, and she knew she'd be a wreck after the baby was born and taken away by the Winters. She still hadn't told her parents.

Maria called Liz at least twice a week, trying to get Liz to change her mind and tell Max about Liz's plans for the baby. Liz refused everytime, holding fast to her beliefs that her and Max's child would lead a better, more fulfilled life with the Winters. She and Max couldn't care for a child properly at their age. According to Maria, Max was still not with Tess, and had said countless times that he would wait for Liz...wait for her to come home to him.

Despite herself, the thoughts filled her heart with more love for him. But then she would snap back to reality. Max would hate her when he found out what she had done.

Her mind drifted back to the present, as her baby reminded her that it was almost ready to make its appearance in this world. Feeling almost like a pro-breather now, she breathed her way through the contraction.

Liz's hospital room
1:30 pm
Same day

Liz was in agony. She breathed through the contractions just like before, only now they were stronger and only about a minute apart or less. She felt the unbelievable desire to push, wanting to give birth just be out of this pain.

She sucked at the ice chip her aunt gave her when the contraction eased and she lay back. Just then, her doctor entered the room.

"How are you doing, Liz?" she asked her patient with a smile. Liz barely returned the smile.

"I feel like I want to push," she said, "Do you think it's time yet?"

The doctor examined her qucikly and efficiently. "You're at ten centimetres, Liz," she told her. "We'll move to the delivery room when your water breaks. It won't be much longer from then."

No sooner had she spoken those words when Liz felt a gush of warm water between her legs. She gasped and clutched her aunt's arm. The doctor noticed her expression and checked her. "Okay, let's go to delivery," she said, quickly leaving the room to fetch a wheelchair for Liz.

Liz's breathing picked up once again as she was moved to the wheelchair. "Don't push yet, Liz," the doctor advised. "We need a few more contractions first, to make sure the baby is far enough down your birth canal."

Moments later, Liz was in another bed...but she wasn't that comfortable. The bed was raised at the head, so she was partially sitting up, and the doctor had Liz put her feet in stirrups so her legs would spread open. Her blankets were raised to her hips, leaving her exposed below.

Her aunt had situated herself by Liz's side, taking her niece's hand again. The doctor took a place standing at the end of the bed, shining one of those high beam overhead lights that extended and moved right between Liz's legs. She began to coach Liz after the next couple contractions and she checked her constantly.

"Okay, Liz," the doctor said gently. "With the next contraction, I need you to push for the count of ten, and then stop."

Liz nodded. As soon as she absorbed the doctor's words, she felt her breath quicken with the contraction. Gathering her strength, she pushed. God, it hurt. She struggled to breath normally and heard her aunt counting down from ten. As soon as her aunt stopped at zero, Liz rested back against the pillow, feeling the sweat at her temples.

Liz repeated the pushing command for another three contractions, feeling more and more tired as it went on. "Alright, Liz," the doctor announced when Liz relaxed from the last contraction, "I can see the baby's head. This time I need to keep pushing until I tell you to stop. We need to get the baby out as soon as possible now."

Liz nodded, excited now that it was almost over. She grasped her aunt's hand, and when she saw her doctor nod, she bore down and pushed, squeezing her eyes shut with the effort. "The baby's head is out," the doctor said. "Rest for a few seconds, Liz," she said.

It felt like only a nanosecond before the doctor was urging her to push again. Feeling like she could collapse any moment, Liz pushed and kept pushing. Then, she felt it. The sudden rush of movement as the baby finally entered the world. Liz fell back against the pillow drained. But her eyes snapped open when she heard her baby cry.

The doctor carefully laid the child on Liz's stomach. "It's a girl," the doctor announced. Liz stared in awe at the baby, immediately touching her child everywhere, from her toes and fingers, to her soft, downy head with barely there black hair. She felt a rush of indescribable love for her daughter. Her and Max's daughter.

Liz barely felt herself deliver the afterbirth, she was so absorbed in her daughter. She could feel her eyes slowly closing and gave in to the lure of sleep.
