This story is in response to a challenge by Jezebel Jinx. Here's the challenge:
AU. Liz has never been popular at school (author can decide why she isn't popular). She only had two friends (Alex and Maria.) The popular kids are Isabel, Lonnie, Tess, Max, Michael, Rath, Kyle, Pam Troy, and Maria. I want some of the popular kids to be really vicious when it comes to tormenting Liz. And others to be indifferent, not really caring one way or the other.
When Liz is 15 the torment to her gets so bad her family sends her away from Roswell to go live with a relative. Now she's in a new town where she doesn't know anybody. Mia (Dom's sister) takes an instant liking to Liz and helps her gain confidence, dress sexier, and get a more bad-ass attitude. While hanging with Mia, Liz is instantly attracted to Dom.
Dom and Liz, either a short while before Liz turns 18 or after (I want Liz to still be in high school), start to date and she becomes a member of his racing gang. Now her father is sick and she goes back to Roswell to help her mother take care of him. (I want Liz to go by herself but Dom and the other's are about 2 days behind her since they had to take care of some stuff, but they still want to support Liz while her father's sick).
The popular kids that used to tease her heard she was coming home because of her father and want to be at the Crashdown to cause her more pain. But they don't recongize her so she just walks right past them. They find out it's Liz somehow before Dom and the others get there.
The guys are instantly attracted to her and the girls (minus Maria) are instantly jealous of her. I want a confrontation to happen out on the streets and Dom and the gang come riding up evening the score.
Optional
Either Lonnie, Tess, or Pam trying to get with Dom and he turns them down flat.
Max or Rath (I normally love Rath but I see him as an asshole in this) trying to force himself on Liz and Dom saving Liz.
Dom and Liz getting caught having making out or having sex in his car.
Here's what I've written so far. Please let me know what you think! Thanks, Amy
Prologue
December
Roswell, New Mexico
Fifteen year old Liz Parker ran down the streets of Roswell towards her home. She could hear the footsteps behind her and she knew that they were close. Isabelle, Lonnie, Tess, Max, Michael, Rath, Kyle, and Pam had made her life a living hell since she had been in sixth grade. She thought that it would get better as her freshman year progressed but it only got worse. Her sophomore year was not going any betterShe wasn’t sure why they picked on her. She liked school, she was smart, she liked science and English, and she got along with her teachers. Her best friend, Alex, was a computer geek but they didn’t pick on him. Her other best friend, Maria was part of the popular crowd and was dating Michael, but she couldn’t do anything about the tormenting.
Finally, Liz saw her parent’s restaurant in the distance. She could see the lights were on in the apartment over The Crashdown and knew her parents were up there. The thought made her feel slightly safer. She had lost track of time studying for a science test at the Roswell Library. When she had exited the library, she spotted Rath and Kyle and knew that they were there to bother her. She had taken off as soon as she saw them, she knew that they were waiting for her.
She was about 25 feet away from the side door in the alley when strong arms encircled her waist. She screamed but it was cut short because a hand clamped down over her mouth. Her bag dropped to the ground as she was slammed up against the brick wall. She heard snickering from her two assailants.
A harsh voice whispered in her ear, “I think we should have a little fun.”
She felt his hands all over her body as another pair of hands joined in. Before things could go any further the side door to the restaurant opened and her father stepped out into the alleyway. The two boys stopped their assault and took off. Liz slid to the ground as her father ran to her, yelling obscenities at the boys who were running away. He helped her up, then grabbed her bag and led her inside. He knew that it was time to send Liz to live with his sister, Mara.
The Next Morning
Liz made her way into The Crashdown. She ignored the jaunts and giggles aimed at her. She plopped down into a seat at the counter next to Alex. He smiled at her and she returned it. Her father placed a plate of bacon and pancakes in front of each of them. He smiled at the two teenagers and laughed as they wolfed down their food.
Liz and Alex sat in comfortable silence. After they ate they went upstairs and Liz told Alex what had happened the night before. Alex was upset because he had no idea how some people were so cruel to others.
Liz cleared her throat and pulled Alex out of his thoughts, “Alex, because of what happened last night, my Dad and Mom think I should go live with Auntie Mara. And, I really think I should too. There’s just no way I could put up with this for the next two and a half years.”
Alex nodded, “If this will make you happy then go. You shouldn’t have to deal with them everyday. It’ll be like a fresh start.” he smiled at her and Liz smiled her first genuine smile in months.
“I hope so.” She whispered more to herself than to Alex.
Chapter 1
One Month Later
Liz had settled into life with her Aunt Mara pretty well. She had started a new school and liked all of her classes. She didn’t really talk to anyone, but no one bothered her. Liz and her Aunt Mara got along very well. Her Aunt owned her own book store/coffee shop called Serenity. Liz spent her afternoons and weekends there doing homework, helping out, and reading. She was truly the happiest she’d been in a long time. In a few months it would be summertime and Liz couldn’t wait. She was on her way to Serenity when a car pulled up beside her. Liz froze.
Before she could move she heard a female’s voice ask, “Hi, do you want a ride?”
Liz turned towards the car. It was purple and had silver paint in bursts across the doors. Liz looked at the driver and recognized her as a senior from her high school. Liz just shook her head and mumbled no thank you. She started to walk again but was surprised when the car pulled ahead of her and parked. The dark haired girl that go out of the car smiled at Liz and approached her.
“Okay, well then how about I walk with you?”
“Um, okay.” Liz said.
“I’m Mia Toretto.” She stuck her hand out.
Liz looked at it for a minute before hesitantly shaking it, “Liz Parker.”
“I know. I’ve seen you around school but I haven’t had a chance to say hi yet. Where are you headed?”
“Oh, my Aunt Mara owns Serenity, the book store/coffee shop down the street and I was just going there.”
Mia nodded, “Yeah, I’ve been there quite a few times. It’s a great place to find a quiet space and do your homework.”
Liz nodded and smiled, “Yeah.”
“Listen, I have to drop off some stuff to my brother who owns a garage a few blocks over. How about you come with me and then we can grab some coffee at your Aunt’s place.”
Liz wasn’t sure, but something in her told her to trust the girl in front of her, so she nodded.
Five minutes later they pulled up to Toretto’s Garage and got out of the car. Liz followed Mia into the garage. As they walked in, all eyes turned to Liz and Mia.
Liz smiled shyly as Mia walked up to a blonde haired man and kissed him.
She turned towards Liz and said, “Everyone this is Liz. Liz, this is my boyfriend Brian, my brother Dominic, Letty, Jesse, Leon, and Vince.”
They all smiled and said hello to her.
Liz said hello and then stood awkwardly in the middle of the room as Mia went to drop off some stuff in Dominic’s office. Liz looked up as she felt someone standing in front of her. She was met with a beautiful smile and a kind pair of eyes.
“Liz, it’s nice to meet you.”
Liz couldn’t help but smile at the man standing in front of her. She was instantly attracted to him and felt her heart beat pick up a little bit.
“It’s nice to meet you too Dominic.”
“Call me Dom. Everyone else does.” He winked at her.
Liz could only smile because Mia came back into the room and shouted her goodbyes to everyone. Liz looked over her shoulder as she got into the car and caught Dom’s gaze following her.
Liz and Mia spent the rest of the night at Serenity getting to know one another. Mia was appalled by the way Liz was treated and silently vowed to help Liz overcome all of her hurt and pain.

Chapters 2 & 3
Hi Everyone. Here's the next 2 chapters. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for all the great feedback so far:) ~Amy
Chapter 2
TWO MONTHS LATER
Liz Parker and Mia Toretto walked down the hall and were oblivious to the stares that they received. The girls were envious and the guys were checking them out. Liz was dressed in a denim skirt that hit mid thigh, a dark purple halter top, and leather boots that hit her knee. Mia was dressed similarly in a leather skirt with a white halter top and the same boots as Liz. It was the last day of school before graduation and Mia and Liz were discussing Mia’s graduation party.
The whole gang had taken a liking to Liz and looked at her as a little sister. Liz was quiet and shy, but Mia had taught her to have self confidence. Liz had started dressing sexier, but she was still her book worm self. She loved her new friends and she had a crush on Mia’s brother. She would catch Dom staring at her, but she would always look away and blush. She felt childish but she wasn’t sure what she should do. Mia had hinted that her brother liked Liz, but Liz couldn’t believe it. Dom was five years older than her, so there was no way he would be interested in a high school girl, or so she thought.
Mia’s Party: Two Nights Later
Mia looked around at everyone just hanging out in her backyard. Dom and Vince were manning the grill, while Liz and Letty were hanging out by the pool. Mia smiled as she felt her boyfriend, Brian, wrap his arms around her.
“Hey baby.” he whispered in her ear.
“Hey.” She smiled up at him as she turned in his arms.
“What’s going on in that pretty head of yours?”
Mia laughed, “Actually, I was thinking about Liz. I’m so glad she came here and I’ve gotten to know her.”
Brian nodded, “Yeah. She’s a sweet girl. Have you noticed the way your brother’s been trying to discreetly check her out.”
“Mhmm, that’s why I picked out that bikini for her. I knew she would look hot in it, and I know Dom likes her. She’s so shy, anytime I bring it up she blushes. But, she has a whole new attitude and confidence level, which makes me think that she gets shy about Dom because she likes him.”
“Makes sense.” Brian agreed with Mia.
They watched Liz and Dom steal glances at each other for a few more minutes and then went their separate ways.
Liz opened her eyes as she felt her lounge chair shift. Her eyes met Mia’s.
“What’s up Lizzie?”
Liz smiled at Mia, “Nothing much. I’m just enjoying your party.”
“And, my brother.” Mia added.
Liz blushed and looked away.
“Liz,” Mia continued, “why don’t you go over and talk to him?”
“He’s busy,” Liz said, “I don’t want to bother him.”
Mia sighed, “All right, come join me in the pool.”
The girls got into the pool to cool off and then laid on the floats in the pool just talking about different trips they were going to take this summer. Liz was going to help her Aunt out at Serenity and Mia was doing the books for Dom, but the two girls planned on taking lots of trips. Mia would be attending a state college about fifteen minutes away, while Liz entered her junior year in high school.
Across the yard, Leon and Vince manned the grill while Brian and Dom went inside to grab more chips.
“So,” Brian started, “are you into Liz?”
Dom paused, “No, why?”
“Dude, you’ve been staring at her for the past three hours.”
“I have not.”
“Yes, you have.”
“No, I haven’t.” Dom walked out of the house, which signaled the end of the conversation, as Brian sighed.
Chapter 3
A Year and A Half later
Liz closed her locker and made her way to her senior English class. It was definitely her favorite class this semester. She sat down and looked through her planner. She was going to have a belated birthday dinner with the gang tonight and Brian and Mia’s new house, which just happened to be next door to Dom’s house. Liz smiled as she thought of her friends. She would do anything for them. Over the past two years that she had lived with her Aunt she had fallen in love with Dom, but it was unrequited because she never worked up the nerve to tell him. She had never dated anyone else and neither had he, but she didn’t know why. Liz had definitely come a long way over the past few years. She had an edge, an attitude and everyone knew not to mess with her because she was part of Dom’s gang.
Liz loved to go to the racing matches and cheer on Leon, Letty, Vince, Dom, Jesse, and Brian. She and Mia would cheer from the sidelines. Liz’s favorite part was the huge bear hug she would receive from Dom after each win and they always won. They were the hottest racing gang around.
Liz’s 18th birthday was a week ago, but between school, work, and races the gang hadn’t had a chance to celebrate, so Mia had insisted on dinner this week. Liz had given in because she knew it would make Mia happy.
Later that Night
The entire gang was at Mia and Brian’s to celebrate Liz’s birthday. Mia and Brian had been trying to get Dom and Liz together for the past two years but all their efforts were in vain.
Liz looked up from her conversation with Letty as Mia brought out her cake. She made a wish and then blew out the candles.
As they were eating cake Mia decided she’d give her match making skills one last try, “Hey Liz?”
Liz looked up at Mia, “Yeah?”
“Oh, you know that guy Nick that comes into the shop and occasionally you see him at Serenity?”
Liz nodded.
“Well, he asked me about you today?”
“Oh?” Liz said, she was used to guys hitting on her, but he had never seemed interested in her.
“Yeah, he asked me if I’d set you up on a date with him and I agreed.”
“What?” Liz gasped.
The whole room grew quiet.
“Yeah. So, tomorrow night at 8 he’s going to pick you up here.” Mia said smiling.
Before Liz could respond Dom stood up, “Mia, are you crazy? That guy has a reputation around here for being a player. Liz can’t go out with him.”
“I’ve never heard that before about him. Have any of you?” Mia asked the rest of the group.
They all said no.
Dom threw his hands up and walked out of the house. Liz shook her head and threw Mia a glance as she got up and made her way out of the room to follow Dom. Leon, Vince, Letty, Jesse, Brian, and Mia all smiled at each other.
Liz found Dom in his backyard near the pool.
She hesitated, “Dom?” She questioned softly.
She saw him stiffen and watched his arm muscles flex.
He turned around slowly and Liz could clearly see the distress on his face.
“Dom, what’s wrong?”
“Liz, you can’t…” he paused, “you shouldn’t go out with Nick.”
Liz smiled as she reached his side. She looked up into his eyes, “Don’t worry, I won’t. You see,” Liz said, feeling her confidence build, “I’ve liked someone else for quite a while.”
Dom closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “You do? Well, you should….you should tell him.”
“I just did.” Liz whispered.
Dom’s eyes popped open and he looked down at her. All of the walls he built crumbled with those three words and he pulled her against him and kissed her.
Liz was surprised at first but once she felt his tongue run across her bottom lip, she wrapped her arms around his neck and allowed him to deepen the kiss. When the need for air became vital they broke apart breathing heavy.
They looked at each other and Dom said, “I have wanted to do that since I met you.”
Liz laughed, “I have wanted you to do that since I met you.”
They smiled at each other and then turned sharply when they heard cheering behind them. They laughed as their friends all said it was about time.
“All right, all right.” Dom said, “Show’s over. Go back inside.” He watched them all turn and walk in the house.
“I never got to give you your gift.” Dom said as he grabbed Liz’s hand and pulled her toward his garage. He opened the door and told Liz to stay at the entrance with her eyes closed. She did as instructed.
Dom pulled the canvas tarp off of her gift and then went back to her side and led her into the garage.
He said, “Open your eyes.”
Liz opened her eyes and her mouth fell open in shock. Sitting before her was a dark blue car. The car sparkled in the dim light of the garage and Liz couldn’t believe it. She turned towards Dom.
He smiled at her, “I’ve been working on it for a while. I wanted to get the colors right.” He shrugged.
Liz threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.
When they broke apart Dom said, “Welcome to the gang…the racing gang that is.”
Liz smiled, “Are you sure.”
“Sweetheart, you are one of the best drivers I know. I’ve seen the way you handle a car and I know you will be great. There’s a big race in three days, a lot of money is at stake, almost a million dollars. I’m entering, will you go with me?”
Liz nodded enthusiastically, “I can’t wait.”
Dom smiled down at her, “Let’s go inside and tell the others.”
Liz put her hand in Dom’s hand and allowed him to lead her into the house.

Chapter 4
One day later
Liz was on cloud nine. She and Dom had spent the entire night talking and confessed their true feelings to one another. Liz realized how foolish they’d both been to not be honest with each other about their crushes. Both of their crushes had turned into love. Although neither had said the three words to the other, they both knew that deep down that’s what it was.
Liz laid in bed drifting in and out of sleep. She was just about to dose off again when the phone rang.
“Hello?” Liz answered.
“Liz,” she heard her mother’s voice croak over the phone.
“Mom, what’s the matter?”
“Honey, it’s your father…”
Three hours later
Liz looked up at Dom who was leaning up against the door to her car. She felt tears well up in her eyes.
“Sweetheart, it will be okay. I promise. Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you now?”
Liz shook her head, “No, Dom, you have to race. And, you have to win. Just come to me as soon as you are done.”
“I will sweetheart, I will. We all will.” He opened her door for her and leaned down to kiss her.
After the short but passionate kiss, Dom watched Liz drive off down the street.
A few hours later
Liz pulled up outside of the Crashdown. She realized that nothing had changed since she left. She could see Maria and Alex sitting at the counter. She tensed when she noticed the occupants of one of the booths. Isabel, Lonnie, Tess, Max, Michael, Rath, Kyle, Pam Troy all sat laughing and Liz felt as if no time had gone by at all. But, then she realized she wasn’t the same girl they had picked on. She opened the car door and closed it. She hit the alarm on her keychain and it beeped. As she looked up she realized that she had caught the attention of the patrons inside the Crashdown.
She breezed in through the doors and felt all eyes on her. She was wearing a dark denim skirt that hit her mid-thigh. She had on a white tank top and pair of white flip flops. Her long dark hair was piled high on top of her head and her sunglasses rested neatly on top of her head. She heard cat calls as she walked by the popular groups tables. She turned and gave them an icy glare, which immediately shut them up.
Liz took a seat at the counter, but before she could say anything to Alex and Maria she heard Rath say, “So anyways, little Liz Parker is coming home and I think we should be here when she arrives.”
“When is she coming?” Max asked.
“Dude, I don’t know. All I know is that her dad is sick and she is coming to help her mother out.”
“What do you say we give her a welcome home she will never forget?”
All of the occupants of the table laughed and it took all of Liz’s will power not to go over there.
Rath got up and they all followed him out. Liz let out a breath. She looked next to her at Alex and Maria and smiled at them.
“Hi.” she said.
They turned to her and smiled, “Hi.”, they said in unison.
She laughed, “You guys really don’t recognize me?”
They seemed to think about it for a second before a light went off in both of their eyes. All three were engulfed in a hug within a matter of seconds.
Liz was glad to be back home for a few days. She had missed Alex and Maria. The three spent the rest of the afternoon catching up. Liz had told them all about Dom, her close friends, and racing. She made both of them promise not to tell anyone she was back. Then, she went up to visit her parents at the hospital.
Two days Later
Liz had managed to keep a low profile for the last few days. Her father had come home from the hospital and was recovering quite well. She spent her days and nights helping her mother care for him. She had decided when she got up that morning that she was going to have lunch with Alex and Maria. She dressed in a pair of light khaki Capri’s with a deep blue halter top. She slipped on a pair of light brown flip flops and made her way down to the Crashdown.
She walked through the doors and sat down with Maria and Alex. Just as they finished their lunch the bells above the door chimed and Liz looked up to be greeted by the popular group. In a matter of seconds, she was flanked by Michael, Rath, Max, and Kyle.
“So, Maria, who’s your friend?” Max asked.
Maria looked at Liz who just rolled her eyes. She pushed her way out of the booth.
“I was just leaving.” She said.
“Oh, I don’t think you were.” Rath said as he grabbed her arm.
Before Liz could stop herself she felt her palm connecting with the side of his face. The group grew silently.
Liz said calmly, “Don’t touch me again. I don’t know who you think you are, but you grab me again and you will be sorry.”
“Liz,” Alex started before he could stop himself.
Once again silence engulfed the group and shocked expressions were worn by all.
“Liz….Liz Parker?” Tess asked, “Wow…and to think I was jealous of you for a whole day.”
All the girls laughed.
Rath stepped closer to Liz and when she went to back up she was met with a hard body behind her.
“Where do you think you’re going?” she heard Max’s voice rasp against her ear.
Before she could even react a voice rang throughout the restaurant, “I think you better take your hands off of my girlfriend.”
The group parted to see who had spoken and all were met with fierce dark eyes. Liz broke out of their grasp and went to stand next to Dom who wrapped his arm around her shoulders. The gang stood behind them.
“And, I also think that I don’t ever want to see you bothering my girlfriend or you will regret it.”
The guys of the popular group actually looked scared, while the girls once again had a reason to be envious of Liz.
She looked at her friends behind her who all wore similar expressions to Dom. She turned towards him and pulled him down for a brief kiss, “Hi.” she whispered. He smiled at her and pulled her to him for another kiss.
When he let her go she turned back towards the popular group only to find that they were no longer there. She watched her friends go and mingle with Maria and Alex. She turned towards Dom and was met with his intense gaze.
“Thanks.”
“Sweetheart, I would do anything for you.”
She smiled but before she could say anything he spoke, “I love you.”
“I love you too.” And for the first time, Liz Parker knew that the rest of her life would be spent just as happy as she was at this moment.
