Chapter 1
Ethereal Planes…
In a place that was simply impossible to describe, actions that people on the lower planes of the universe could barely understand were happening all over…even if they could understand it they would probably be pissed. For as far as the eye could see and infinitely beyond there was tables, laid out like massive 3d chessboard on which there were billions of pieces. Around each table there were four players, moving each piece with but a glance and playing with thousands and sometimes millions of pieces at a time. Each of those players were ancient, born before time even began and governed over their realms. Each board along a line was a world; the lines to the sides were other universes. All were dressed in simple white, hooded robes with amulets around their necks that adorned symbols. Each symbol represented on of the basic elements of Earth, Fire, Air and Water.
On one particular table, there were more than the four standard players. Years ago one table ended up being destroyed, an ancient and proud people of which one couple in particular refused to surrender to their fate. They found a way and saved their son. The destruction of that world may have ended the game on one table but the players were not done, not while that last son was out in the cosmos. When he landed on another world, those players came to that table, although they couldn’t participate fully. Only he was on that board and while he was connected to all of them through his bloodlines, one piece to four players wasn’t going to work.
Then another time came, something unexpected and beyond even their control. A coup ended the lives of the main pieces of another board but those four pieces didn’t cease to exist. Instead they endured and changed, binding to another species and resulting in the two boards merging as one. Twelve players, three worlds, all on one board. Three worlds that were already connected through the origin of their species from a single rock that travelled through space, broke into three and carried the building blocks of like onto those worlds.
“It appears as though our game is getting quite interesting.”
“You’re just getting that?”
“Well it’s just that I was thinking that perhaps we should spice things up a little.”
“How so?”
“It has been a while since all four were active on Earth. With our new players here, there is potential for a restored balance…maybe an enhanced one. Events happen that are out of our purview, we usually use them…why not now?”
“Curious. How do we begin?”
“With our friends here.” Then he pointed to the board, “Right here…”
Somewhere on the North Pole…
Clark Kent, the last son of the destroyed planet of Krypton known as Kal-El, stood among angle deep in pristine snow that now one had stepped on in years. The last thing he saw was a blinding light as he formed the three elemental stones from his home world into one transparent crystal. Now that crystal was floating before him and he reached out to grab it. Clark didn’t know why, he just knew he had to so he threw it with all his great strength and the crystal went flying for miles before landing deep into the snow-covered ground. In seconds it started; great white spires started sprouting from the ground, one after the other came up. They formed together, blending, forging and gleamed in the light until an incredible structure now stood before the young alien. Clark started walking toward it. However, he wasn’t the only one who was brought here. Chloe Sullivan, high school newspaper reporter who learned of Clark’s power but not his origins, was brought into the Kawatche caves under Smallville by Lex Luther and was close enough to be sucked into the portal that brought Clark here.
She woke up in the snow and instantly felt the cold. She wasn’t exactly dressed for it and quickly wrapped are arms around herself as she stood up carefully. Her little trip wasn’t something she ever prepared for and it left her very dizzy. Chloe looked around and then she saw it, the crystalline white spires that had beams of light coming from it.
“Oh my god.” Chloe said and then saw a figure moving toward it. “CLARK!” she shouted loudly. He may have had super hearing and she knew it but she couldn’t even begin to understand what was going on here and couldn’t control the volume of her voice.
In the distance, Clark suddenly heard his name. He turned back and saw Chloe standing in the snow before she fell to the ground. Cold had gotten to her quickly at the massively sub-zero temperatures. Clark ran to her, not as fast as he could have but she wasn’t that far. “Chloe, god.” Clark said
“C…Clark…ti…time for Su…Superboy mode.” Chloe said, shivering
“What?” Clark asked
“It’s okay…I know. Use your eyes…heat me up.” Chloe said as her body started to freeze but then she smiled, “Ju…just don’t set me…on fire.”
Clark didn’t care at that point, he couldn’t let his friend die but then he suddenly remembered his second bout of amnesia a few weeks ago. When it was over Chloe said that he had trusted her. He never knew what she meant until now. Clark stepped back and used his heat vision on as low a setting as he could. The beams of heat washed over her body, warming her gently again and again before she opened her eyes.
When Clark stopped, Chloe stood up with his help and they looked at each other. “I guess we need to talk.” Clark said
“Yeah…but later…still cold out here.” Chloe said as she looked to the structure before looking back at him, “I always figured meteor rock mutant. This is way more than that isn’t it?”
Clark nodded and Chloe could see the pain and concern in his face, “Chloe, I…”
“Clark, it’s okay. You’ve saved my life just now and back in that science guy’s memory lab…and I’m guessing it’s not the first time.”
“No.” Clark said, “But I need to get you out of here before you freeze again.”
“Well I’m guessing there’s heat in there.” Chloe said, looking to the building.
Clark was reluctant to take her in there, he didn’t know if he should take her in there. He had no idea what Jor-El had left in there and didn’t know if it was dangerous to his friend. However, at the speeds he would travel at to get Chloe to safety, she would be a block of ice from the wind chill before long. “Okay…just…whatever you see, I’ll explain later okay. I promise.”
Chloe nodded and Clark wrapped an arm around her, keeping her close as they walked the distance into the structure. They walked in through the entrance, moving through the short hall into the main chamber. Clark looked over white platforms that stood at multiple heights and then focused on a bank of glowing crystals.
“Welcome home, Kal-El.” Both teenagers heard from a loud voice
“Way, way more than meteor mutant.” Chloe whispered
“I don’t understand, I thought Krypton was destroyed?” Clark called out
“It was, but its geography was recreated here in this Fortress of Solitude. It is here that you will train and learn.” Jor-El said
“Cl…Clark.” Chloe said when the voice silenced, she couldn’t take the cold any more
“My friend…she can’t take the cold.” Clark said
“She doesn’t belong here Kal-El. This place is for you.”
“Chloe didn’t come here by choice. Please.” Clark begged his father
“Very well.” Jor-El said
Instantly two crystals rose from the floor on either side of them, when they stopped they changed colour to red and produced heat. Clark sat Chloe down, the warmth spread over her as she moved closer to one crystal. She wanted as much heat as possible to compensate for what her body lost.
“Thank you.” Chloe said as Clark placed his hand on her shoulder
“Stay here, stay warm.” Clark told her softly. She nodded and he moved away to the bank of crystals. Chloe watched in amazement as one flew out and hovered before Clark. He reached out and grabbed it; lights suddenly light up. It revealed the true expanse of the chamber around them. It was beyond anything they could have imagined and showed a great chasm then plummeted down into darkness. Then in that chasm a giant image of his father appeared and he saw him for the first time“Jor-El what is this place?” Clark asked
Pod Chamber, Outside Roswell, Same Time
Max stood with Tess, Michael with Isabel, both pairings held in their hands the communication orbs they managed to get their hands on with Liz standing off to the side and watching. All four closed their eyes and focused, suddenly the symbols on the devices glowed and they opened their eyes to see an image forming before them.
“Hello, if I appear to you now then you live and that news in itself is the best I could hope for. I am Tianna, former queen of our home Antar. You are my children, my son Zan king of our world until the darkness came. Along with you I have sent your young bride, Ava. My beautiful daughter, Vilandra, along with you I have sent he who is your betrothed, Rath, a brave warrior and general of your brother’s forces. In a time of peace an enemy arose, one who coveted the power held by you. He took this power but not that which is yours through blood. In a savage attack you were all slain but the essence of who you are and the code of life from your cells were saved. We then brought you to Earth, a world of life similar to our own where you can live safely until your return to us. Your bodies were re-grown, blended with human genetic material to fill in the gaps in the code and your essence returned to you. However, not all of those who carried your power could be saved and we fear for the safety of our home, but along with you we have sent the Granolith. The greatest achievement of our race and something Kivar desperately wants. As such he sent his people, our enemy has followed you there. It lies within this place that houses your incubation pods. The orbs in your hands will allow you to interface with the Granolith, which houses this message. Should you need information, my consciousness has been artificially duplicated and integrated into the device. Our world needs you all…be safe.”
The image faded, “I knew there was something out there, I had no idea how important it was.” Michael said
“Our mother Max, she was so beautiful.” Isabel said
“Yes she is.” Max said as he suddenly realised that Liz was no longer in the chamber. Max ran after her and called her name, “LIZ!”
Liz stopped as she started on the trail down the rock, “Max, don’t.”
“Liz? What’s going on?” Max asked as the others came out
“You heard that message Max. You and Tess…you’re married. You belong with her. And what’s out there, I can’t get in the way of that. It’s too important.” Liz said
“Liz, I don’t care about that right now. I love you and I’m not going to let you walk away.” Max said
“That’s my choice Max. And I choose to walk and let you do what you need to do.” Liz said
“Not while I have a choice as well.” Max said as he moved in and kissed her until she was breathless, “You don’t want to leave. I know you don’t.”
“But I have to.”
“No you don’t. Tell me you don’t love me and I’ll stop now.” Max said
Liz looked up into his eyes, she felt the warmth come from his body and she felt safe, home and where she belonged just as she always had when his arms were wrapped around her. However, the story she had just heard of her boyfriend’s home resonated through her head. “And what about Tess?” Liz asked
Max looked at her, he couldn’t answer; he couldn’t even begin to wrap his mind around the situation with her. Off to the side, Tess looked down at the pair and felt pain. She didn’t want them to break up, she saw the way they looked at each other and no one should be forced to walk away from that. Yet at the same time she wanted Max and it wasn’t just lust or some sense of destiny, she had genuine feelings for him that she couldn’t deny. On top of that she liked Liz a lot. She jumped off a bridge with him, she willing risked her life for Max and them all and she knew that she would never give up their secret. As Max remained silent trying to find the words, Liz knew that he couldn’t. She leaned up and kissed him before walking away down the trail. The other three approached Max and stood by him.
“Max…” Tess started
“Not now Tess…okay?” he said softly
“Go after her Max?” Tess said
Everyone looked at her and Max saw genuine compassion in her eyes. Max leaned over and put his hands on either side of her face before he kissed her forehead, “Thank you.” Max said before he took off
“Uh, I thought…?” Michael asked
“You thought right but I’m not going to cause them problems just now. If Max is meant to be with me then sooner or later he’ll be with me.” Tess said, “Besides, screw this destiny thing. Something tells me you two aren’t going to be shacking up any time soon.”
Isabel and Michael looked at each other. “Got that straight.” Isabel said
“Hey!” Michael complained
“No offence but come on Michael, it’s us. Add Alex and Maria to that and…”
“Well, yeah.” Michael said, “And speaking of Alex and Maria, last I heard we had a celebratory burger waiting for us for getting through this without being dead.”
“Oh I’m all for that.” Tess said, “And a very big chocolate milkshake. I think I need to drown my sorrows in chocolate.”
Isabel smiled, “Things will work out. Maybe you’ll meet someone, I think Kyle Valenti likes you.”
“That was before he found out what I was. I think he’ll be on his own for a while working out his new reality.” Tess said, “But yes, here’s hoping that something good will come out of this.”
Smallville, Kansas, Same Time
Lana Lang couldn’t believe that she was still alive, Lex had stuck her in a helicopter to escape the second meteor shower in Smallville’s history but the barrage of space rocks had resulted in that helicopter crashing. She survived but was cut and bruised as she pulled herself out of the burning wreckage. She was the only one alive but the first thing she saw was piled up soil from an impact. The last time she’d seen something like this she lost her parents and couldn’t help but climb up to look down at the rock that caused so much devastation.
However, what she saw almost stopped her heart. There wasn’t a rock in that crater, no green or red crystals but there was a large black mass – a ship. Lana looked on with fear and wonder as it opened and light shined upon her from the opened. Then there were two figures, she couldn’t make them out in the light but suddenly there was a blur. With a sound moving behind her and stopping she turned sharply to see a man and woman before her. The man reached out and grabbed her throat, lifting her up into the air with her legs thrashing.
“Where is Kal-El?” he asked
“I…I don’t know…who…” Lana gasped out as the woman moved behind her, looking over her body.
“She’s lying. I can smell him on her. They are close.” The woman said
“WHERE IS KAL-EL?” The man said angrily as he squeezed harder
“I…I don’t know.” Lana said with fear in her eyes, for a split second she knew she was going to die
“Is it possible she doesn’t know?” the man asked his colleague, “This world is still primitive on such matters.”
“Curious.” The woman said as she stroked the teenager’s hair, “They are definitely close, I would have thought that she would know. No matter. The scent on her is distinctly Kryptonian and Kal-El is the only one on the planet. Thanks to this one I know his scent now, we can track him to where he is hiding. The impact of the rocks may have forced him to seek shelter to avoid the Kryptonite.”
“Agreed. But even if this own doesn’t know of Kal-El, there maybe others that do.”
“Yes, we should identify them. They will lead us to him.” The woman said, “Kill this one.”
“Pl…please…” Lana said
Just then dozens of sirens came around the corner and drove onto the field. They had seen the helicopter come down and with the end of the meteor shower they thought they could help. When they arrived they saw a girl they knew well in the small Kansas town being held by the throat by two people they didn’t know at all. Each of the police drew their guns and aimed. The two aliens turned as the male released Lana who ran clear, fighting through the pain in her legs until she was hiding passed the tree line.
“FREEZE!” one officer yelled
“Interesting.” The woman said, “They do not know what they are dealing with yet still they will try to stop us.”
“They have no reason to suspect that they cant do so.” The man said
“DOWN ON YOUR KNEES, HANDS ON YOUR HEADS.”
The aliens took a step forward and a single shot rang out. There was a blur of movement of the female from her hand but as it refocused she held up the bullet, “Primitive.”
All of the police were stunned but as the woman dropped the bullet and started walking forward, the police shot round after round at them. Each bullet bounced off their impenetrable skin until they were out of ammo. The police just looked at them, several were sure that they got in a few headshots yet these two were not only still standing, they barely even flinched a muscle. From her hiding place Lana looked on and was terrified but not even as much as what she was about to feel.
The two aliens then just looked at their targets as blasts of intense heat shot out of their eyes and impacted the vehicles before them. They exploded, one after the other sending the officers flying back from the concussive force. Several were on fire but rolled back and forth to get themselves out. The Kryptonians looked at the devastation before them.
“Easy…too easy.” The man said, “We must find Kal-El…the girl?”
“Forget about her. We will find her again.”
The two of them then took off, moving as fast as they could which left nothing but a seconds worth of blur before they were gone. Lana couldn’t believe the power she witnessed and was almost petrified. She could barely move from the fear but she also knew that those two would come back to their ship at some point. When that happened she wanted to be far away from here as possible and that was what drove her to get on her feet and move.
The Fortress of Solitude, North Pole, A Few Minutes Later
Chloe stayed close to her heat source and watched Clark who obviously had no reaction to the intense cold of their current location. The image before her long time friend, the crystalline structure…there was simply nothing on Earth that could compare to it all and when that thought entered her mind, it hit her. Clark had to be an alien as well. She sat up and looked at her very human looking friend, this was definitely going to be a more interesting chat than she had previously thought before hand. However, that was later, right now she was more interested in what the hologram was saying to Clark.
“You see Kal-El, it is no coincidence that the people around you are no different in appearance. We learned a long time ago that once upon a time our worlds were barren rocks. Journeying through space was a single asteroid upon which were small amounts of chemicals and amino acids. The basic building blocks of life. An impact from another rock broke the asteroid into three separate fragments. One landed on Krypton and grew to our race.
Many generations into our exploration of space we discovered the fate of the second fragment. It landed on a world named Antar and grew into a race equal to our own. Cousins to our race. Together we explored the entirety of the universe, grew in power and spread peace throughout our territories to a billion worlds. It was together that we discovered the result of the third piece – It came to Earth almost a full 500,000 years after the fragments landed on Krypton and Antar which is why they are less advanced than ourselves. It is also why each generation we travel there…to remember what we once were and to learn to appreciate what we are now. In time Earth would have joined us as all three worlds are connected on the most basic genetic level. Now that we are gone they will meet with Antar.
We built this fortress to as a place of power, a library to hold the knowledge gathered by Krypton and Antar. We chose Earth so that when they were ready they would unite the elements and learn. When the fate of Krypton was clear to us from a dear friend in the Antarian ruling family and that information being scoffed at by our own leaders we took it upon ourselves to prepare. I uploaded a reproduction of my conscious mind into the systems of your ship, which was then transferred into the systems of the caves and the fortress. This is the last of Krypton and so it is for the last son of Krypton. We used our resources to save you my son and to educate you of your home.
While we built this place, its knowledge is too great and unorganised. To that end, our cousins of Antar built the great Key. A device that allowed understanding of that information. But to our eternal regret, darkness is inherent to every race no matter how far they come. General Zod. Chaos personified, son of a Kryptonian and an Antarian. While he chose to live on Krypton, his brother Kivar rose to power on Antar. Both sought power and the Fortress and the knowledge is contained was the ultimate power. With it they could turn Earth into a castle that couldn’t be breached and with their powers under its yellow sun they would be gods among the humans there. Kivar was stopped from reaching Earth but at a great price as great friend, people we considered family died to stop them. It was my hope Kal-El that those close to them found a way to change their fate.
However Zod reached Earth. Through great effort and a battle that the people of Earth thankfully never knew about beyond a myth of gods and angles battling in the heavens, it was then that we imprisoned him, trapping him in a pocket dimension of my own discovery that we use as a prison – The Phantom Zone. From that place there is no escape but the power here can release him. The threat of what may happen if this place fell into the wrong hands it was decided to separate the key from the lock. The fortress was disassembled and hidden beneath the ice, only able to be restored by the elemental crystal which in turn was broken and sent across the globe, hidden and protected by Kryptonite. I knew you would have found away around that my son.
Now this place is in your care, a new home from which you can guide humanity. Live as one of them Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you…my only son.” Jor-El said
Clark heard his father’s words, more so the last section. He felt it in his heart, a sense of purpose and light yet at the same time he felt pain but then he remembered another message that he received 2 years ago from the very ship that carried him to Earth. “But the message I got in my ship a couple of years ago? You said that I was a god among them. That I should rule them with strength, that is where my greatness lies. That kind of message isn’t showing them the light.”
“Perhaps I can explain that.” A man said as he came running in from a path to the side of the chasm. He looked to be in his late 20s, dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt with a ring that adorned a Kryptonian symbol. He looked up to the image of Jor-El, “Sorry I’m late, I was surprised when this thing switched on.” He said indicating to his ring
“Who are you?” Clark asked
“Oh my. This is an honour, Kal-El, a real honour.”
“My name is Clark.”
“Yeah, that’s fine out there but in here you are Kal-El. Anyway, my name is Thomas Knight and I am…uh…”
“He is the Keeper of the Fortress.” Jor-El said, “Millennia ago his family line was chosen and trained to care for this place when it was activated, each generation trained by the previous.”
“Keeper?” Clark asked
“If it helps, think of me as a librarian but please don’t call me that.” Thomas said, “I’m here to counsel you when necessary as Jor-El can’t exactly leave this place. And as for that message from your ship…you’re people’s leadership refused to believe that Krypton was going to be destroyed, their own arrogance and fear I guess…if it wasn’t for that you’re people had the technology to save themselves instead all but one perished with that planet.”
“Me.” Clark said
“Exactly, but even with all the secrecy, Zod’s followers learned what they were planning to do and sent a signal that slightly twisted the words of the message in your ship. It was their last dying act. I guess they hoped they could push you from the path your father hoped you would follow.”
“And my father pushing me to abandon my life and follow some mysterious destiny that he wouldn’t tell me about?”
“Not abandon Kal-El.” Jor-El said
“Some things your father needed you to complete. Like getting the elementals before a human did. He couldn’t take the chance. Which is why last year he arranged for an artificial personality to take control of you. He never intended it to be permanent, just long enough to do what must be done.” Thomas said and then looked over to Chloe, “Uh…do you know there’s a human sitting behind you.”
“Yeah, she’s my friend Chloe.” Clark said as Chloe waved over to him.
“Well…that’s just…well that’s a waste of a thousand odd years of training. I was supposed to be the only one allowed in here. What good is it if anyone can walk in the front door?”
“Not anyone. Chloe.” Clark said, “Besides what was I supposed to do? Leave her outside to freeze?”
“Well I hate to say it but yes.” Thomas said, “I suppose we should just be thankful that it’s just one. I take it her discretion can be assured?”
Clark looked back at Chloe and smiled, “Yes. I trust her.”
“Keeper. Begin.” Jor-El said
“Begin what?” Clark asked
Thomas smiled and took the crystal from Clark’s hand. He reinserted it into the bank and a light flashed above the teenager.
“There is much you must learn my son.” Jor-El said and suddenly that light beamed down around the teenager and symbols appeared all around him.
Chloe ran forward as her friend froze, “What are you doing to him?” she was with concern
“He’s learning…about his home. Krypton, its culture, people…everything about where he is from.” Thomas said
