Prologue

Liz was quaking with excitement, but she didn’t let it show. She could never let her emotions surface. That was part of her job. So when agent Pierce called her into his office, she put on her mask and appeared unaffected.

“You wanted me to come see you, sir?” Liz asked in her flat, agent voice.

He stared at her a long minute before replying. “You’ve been here for a while Agent Parker, have you not?” he asked in a slightly bored voice.

“Almost three years, sir.” she replied, showing no emotion.

“And you’ve learned everything: how to defend yourself, how to be covert, how to handle yourself in dangerous situations?” he asked her.

Liz was curious as to where his line of questioning was going, but she kept her voice neutral. “I’ve learned from the best, Agent Pierce.”

“I know.” he replied smoothly. “And that’s why I’m giving you this opportunity.”

Liz stayed silent, knowing he would continue.

“A highly dangerous species of alien has escaped from our compound.” Peirce said. “I am giving you the opportunity to take the lead on finding him.” he told her.

Yes! This was the break she had been waiting for for 3 years! “I’d be honored sir.” she replied, barely able to contain her excitement.

“That’s good. Here’s the file on this thing. Everything we know about it is in there.” he said handing a manila folder over to her. “It’s savage and malicious Parker. If it manages to raise its hands in your direction, don’t expect to come out of it alive. We’ll be giving you some tranquilizer darts strong enough to take out a small elephant. If you shoot the thing with it, it should stay out long enough for you to call for backup and get him picked up. Don’t screw this up Parker, it’ll be your ass on the line.” he warned her, suddenly looking dangerous.

“You can count on me.” she replied smoothly, though inside she was shrinking in fear. Sometimes this man could be downright scary. But they were doing good here; keeping the public safe. Wasn’t it worth it in the end to have to deal with this frightening man?

“Good, now get some sleep. You're leaving first thing tomorrow morning.” he replied, sounding bored once again.

“If I might ask, where am I going?” she said cautiously, knowing that she was pushing it. Agents weren’t supposed to know a lot about what they were doing. If the commanding agents said jump, the only question from her should be how high.

“Roswell, New Mexico.” he replied, cracking a humorless smile. “Who would have thought the alien capital of America would hold actual aliens?”

*****

Where was he?

He knew he was in Roswell, or at least close to it, but he didn’t know exactly where. He tried to focus his brain; to think, but his body hurt too badly. He was losing so much blood, and he had to find somewhere to rest. But first he had to get far enough away from the FBI; he had to make sure they couldn’t catch him or the others.

His heart constricted. Had they caught the others? He was almost certain that they were ok, but he didn’t know for sure. What if Max had left them there, in those cold, white rooms? What if they were being tortured at this very moment?

His brain started to function through his painful haze. Even if they were back there, he couldn't help them in this condition. His powers were still gone from the shot they had given him, and if he didn't curb the blood flow soon, he would likely die.

He did the only thing he could think of. He picked a direction and started running.

Here it is, finally. Sorry if it sucks, I've been having such a hard time writing lately.

Part One

Liz had arrived in Roswell at about 5 in the morning. After getting no sleep and studying the file all night, she was ready to begin her search. The first thing she wanted to do was question some of the locals to see if they had seen the alien. She walked by a restaurant and figured she could get a well needed breakfast and queston the waitress at the same time.

"What can I get you?" The waitress asked. Liz put in her order and waited for the waitress to bring it. After Liz had finished with her food, she called to the waitress.

“Excuse me, Miss?”

When the women walked over Liz asked, “I was just wondering if you had seen this this man?” Liz held up the picture that she had found in the file.

The waitress studied he photo and then shook her head. “Nope, sorry. I don't think I've ever seen him. Why?” she asked, handing the photo back.

Liz quickly said the lie she had come up with the night before. “Oh, well, he used to be my boyfriend. I gave him access to make bank account and he stole everything.” Liz replied, trying to sound pitiful and sad. “I have no money."

The waitress looked sympathetic. “Oh, honey, I’m sorry. You can never tell with men can you?” she asked, patting Liz on the shoulder.

“No, I guess not. Can you do me a favor and keep an eye out for him?” Liz asked, trying to sound hopeful.

“Sure thing, honey.” she said. A loud ding sounded form the back of the diner. "Oh, that's my order. I have to get back to work. I hope you find him."

Liz paid for the food and left the restuarant, walking across the street to an alien museum. She bought her ticket and walked in, not bothering to look at the alien crap. She looked around until she saw a balding man in a yellow vest. “Excuse me? Sir?” she asked, calling out to him.

“Yes? How can I help you?” he questioned politely once he walked over.

“I’m looking for this man, Have you seen him?” Liz proceeded to tell the boyfriend story and handed the picture to him.

“Oh, that looks like Max Evans.” the man said in surprise, and Liz’s heart started to beat a little faster. Did he know where he was? Had he seen Max lately? Could he lead her—?

“I haven't seen him in years! He used to work for me when he was about 16.” the man said, much to Liz’s disappointment.

“Oh, but you haven’t seen him for some time?” Liz asked, trying to keep the desperation out of her voice.

“Nope, but you know, you could try his parents. They live just around the corner on Murray Lane. I forgot the address, but you could probably look it up.” he said. “I need to get going, lots of tours to do.” he said cheerily, turning to leave.

Liz thought about his suggestion. That was actually a pretty good idea. Maybe she should go to the alien’s adoptive parents. She knew the address, since the file gave her everything she needed to know about the alien's guise of Max Evans. Staightening her shoulders in determinaton, Liz walked back to her rental car and hopped in, already planning her interview with the Evan's.

*******

Liz pulled into the Evan’s driveway, taking in her surroundings. It was a modest and pretty house, with a clean cut lawn and a little picket fence. ‘This is where the alien used to live?’ Liz asked herself, puzzled. It looked so normal. She shrugged and stepped out of her rental car, walking up and knocking on the front door.

“Diane Evans?” Liz asked the plump, kind looking lady who opened the door.

“I'm sorry to be rude, but we don’t want to buy anything today.” Diane said, misinterpreting Liz’s suit and tie. Liz made a note to buy more casual clothes. This was supposed to be a discreet mission after all.

“No, I’m afraid you’ve misunderstood.” Liz told the lady, flipping out her FBI badge. “I’m with the FBI.” she said.

The women’s face immediately paled, but she made a valiant attempt to appear unaffected. “Oh, really? What do you need from me?” she asked, her voice shaking the tiniest bit.

Liz narrowed her eyes at the lady, studying her. Liz had been working with the FBI long enough to be able to tell when people were nervous or lying. This lady definitely knew more than she was letting on.

“May I come in Mrs. Evans? I’d like to ask you a few questions about your son.” Liz asked, careful to study the lady’s reaction.

Dian glanced around her house nervously. “No! I mean, no you can’t. I haven’t cleaned it and it’s dreadfully dirty.” She said, sounding somewhat panicked.

Liz started to become suspicious. “Ok, then we can talk right here.” Liz said, figuring the dirty house thing was Diane’s way of trying to get Liz to leave.

“I suppose…” Diane said, sounding extremely hesitant.

“When was the last time you saw your son?” Liz asked, careful to watch the lady’s reaction.

“Uh…it’s been about a year.” Diane said nervously.

“Wow, a year? What has he been doing all that time?” Liz asked.

“I have...I have no idea. He doesn’t call home too often.” Diane said, looking worried and curious about where this line of questioning was leading.

“Well what about—” Liz started to ask, but then stopped when she thought she heard shuffling. She stepped closer and peered into the -- quite clean -- house. Seeing nothing amiss, Liz decided that it must have been a cat or dog or something.

Liz shook her head and continued her questioing. “What about Isabel Evans? Have you seen her lately?” Liz asked, remembering reading in the file that Max Evans had a sister, whom the FBI was also looking into.

“Oh, well no. I haven’t seen either of my children for a while now.” Diane said.

“Are they—?” Liz started to ask, but was again interrupted. Only this time a loud bang had sounded from the backyeard. Liz quickly pushed past Mrs. Evans and ran to the sliding glass door that led to the backyard. She got there just in time to see the object of her search pick himself up from a pair of fallen trashcans and heave himself over the fence surrounding the yard. Liz jerked the door open, ran over to the high, brown fence, and pulled out her tranquilizer gun. Realizing that she couldn’t get to the top of the fence, she quickly stood on a nearby chair. She saw the alien running in between two houses and took aim, but before she could fire he disappeared around the corner.

“Damn it!” Liz yelled in frustration. She was this close to catching that thing on her first day here! Pierce would have been so proud of her!

Liz came back into the house and narrowed her eyes at Mrs. Evans. “You’ve just been caught harboring fugitive. You better start giving me some answers or I could have you thrown in jail.” Liz spat, still pissed. She didn’t wait for an answer before asking, “Where is your son most likely to go aside form here?”

Mrs. Evans straightened her shoulders and replied, “I don’t know, but it I did, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.” she said in a determined voice.

“Do you realize what he is? What he could do to people if let lose? Don’t you even care about the people he could hurt!?” Liz asked the women furiously.

“What he is.” The women bit back. “That’s all you people ever care about, what he is. Yes my son is different, and yes he has gifts, but he would never use them to hurt anyone. What he is is a good soul, and I just wish people like you would see that. What you feel, little miss agent, is no more than racism, only this time it’s not towards a race, but towards a different species. So do what you want with me, because I will not give up my children to you.” she finished, and Liz knew she wasn’t going to get anymore out of her. She genuinely believed the best in her children, and wouldn't turn them in.

Ok, I'm not too enthused about this fic (don't ask me why, I just can't get in the mood :roll: ) but seeing as how I already started it once, and I just started it again, it would be cruel to delete it once more.

So as long as I get feedback wanting me to continue, I'll continue :D

Oh, and it's a little short, sorry!

Part 2

Damn it! How had she found him?

Well, if he thought about it, he realized he hadn’t made it that hard. He went to his parents’ house, for God's sake! It was like putting up a sign that said, 'Alien fugative, stop here!'

Of course they would try his parents first! But he had been in pain and the only thing he was thinking about was getting rest and regaining his ability to heal. Thinking about it now, he hoped he hadn’t put his parents in danger by stowing away there.

He ran until he found the rundown, condemned house that he used to play in as a child. He smiled wistfully as he remembered the time when his mother chewed both Isabel and him out when she had caught them there. Heaving a sigh, he limped through the broken door and settled down on the dirty floor.

It wasn’t clean, or pretty, or even safe, but it would have to do.

********

Liz returned to the hotel room later that night, exhausted and dehydrated. She had chased the alien through rows and rows of houses, determined not to give up. So she ran through all of the back alleys and neighborhoods, checking and double checking areas large enough to hide a person.

Nothing.

Nada.

Zip.

Pierce was not going to be happy.

Liz dialed her head agent's number with a deep sense of foreboding. When the line picked up and Pierce answered, she said, “It’s agent Parker. I've seen the escaped captive, sir.” Liz said to Pierce through the phone. She winced at the sharp intake of breath at the other end and prayed he wouldn’t blow a gasket.

“If you have already spotted him, why is he not back in the compound where he belongs?” Pierce asked in a curt voice, and Liz knew this wasn’t going to be good.

“He escaped, sir.” Liz said, and then held her breath.

There was a moment of silence and then, “What!? You let him get away, Parker? Is that what your telling me? You have sighted the thing, but it managed to escape again!?” Pierce ranted, and Liz thanked God that she was an airplane ride away.

“It took me by surprise, sir. I was visiting it’s adoptive mother, and he turned up. He had already made his escape before I had even pulled my tranquilizer gun out.” Liz tried to reason with him.

“Wait, is the mother covering for it?” he asked. “Because I’m sure we could use some...techniques to get her to talk.” Pierce said in a cold voice that made Liz shiver.

She thought about his words. In truth she had notidea whether or not the mother knew where her son was. She could be contacting him right now, warning him of the FBI search and aiding him in escaping. But, if she was, she was only doing it because she thought she was right.

Liz also remembered reading the list of ‘techniques’ used to interview the alien in the file Pierce have given her. They were cruel ad unusual, and while Liz understood the need to use them with the alien, she couldn't let some kind, middle-aged human go through the same thing.

And another part of Liz’s mind was scared that Pierce even considered it.

“No.” She said finally. “She doesn’t know anything. I’m sure.”

Pierce took seemed to absorb this infomation and then said, “If you're positve she can't be of any use to us, then we'll leave her alone. Just find that thing Parker.” Pierce said, and then the line went dead. Liz heaved a sigh and sat on the bed, trying to figure out how she could locate Max Evans.

After about 10 minutes of thinking hard and not getting anywhere, she started to wonder something. What if she wasn't cut out for this? She had been so excited about her new mission, but now she wasn’t so sure. She thought long and hard, and dialed Pierce’s number once more.

“What now, Parker?” he asked, bypassing the ‘hello’.

Liz took a deep breath, and then let it out. “Sir, I was just wondering if I could possibly…get some back-up?” she asked uncertainly, wondering is she was doing the right thing.

The phone was silent for so long, Liz wondered if she had lost the connection. Then Pierce spoke. “Will it help you apprehend the thing faster?” he asked, sounding as if he was considering it.

“I believe so. I was thinking someone with some muscle, and perhaps a little experience.” she said, holding her breath. "Maybe Agent Valenti." she said, knowing she was overstepping her bounds but wanting to help her slightly burnt-out friend get a job.

The phone was silent once more, and Liz assumed Pierce was pondering her suggestion. "If you want him, and if he'll be able to help you, then I'll send him.” Pierce said, and then hung up the phone.

*******

Liz arrived at the airport at 6:00 sharp, looking through the crowd of exiting passengers. She looked hard at each face, but didn't see Kyle. Where was he? As she was looking, someone tapped her on the back, scaring her to death.

“Looking for me?” A deep voice asked. Liz squealed and spun around to face him. He was a handsome, if not a little short, agent with light hair, nice eyes, and a charming smile. He enveloped her in a bear hug, spinning her around once and then setting her on the ground.

“It’s so great to see you, Kyle!” She squeaked when he put her down, rubbing her ribcage.,

“You too Parker. I can’t thank you enough for getting me this job.” He said, hugging her again.

“You’re a great agent and I needed some sturdy backup. It was nothing personal.” she said, though she was starting to grin.

“Oh, you know you still have the hots for me.” he said, sending her a charming wink.

She laughed and slapped his shoulder. “Oh give me a break. We dated a year ago Kyle! Let it go!” she laughed.

“I have, but you know you haven’t.” he said, flashing her his grin.

“Just remember, Valenti, as of now, you work for me." she said, sending him an amused glare.

Thanks for the feedback, flyawayraven! I guess it’s just you and me huh? Oh, and hello any lurkers!

Next part, hope you like. I’ve gotten past my block a little bit (you can kinda tell I had one in the first part; I didn’t like how I wrote that very much) so I think these next parts will be an improvement.

Part 3

“So, what have you got on him so far?” Kyle asked while the two were eating dinner in my hotel room.

“Um, nothing.” She said truthfully, her shoulders sagging. “Kyle, maybe I’m not cut out for this. I mean, I don’t even know where to start, and every day he slips further and further out of our reach!” She said in a frustrated voice.

“Ok, Liz, calm down, you can do this. I’m going to be here helping.” he said reassuringly, patting her on the back. “We should check out any abandoned buildings in the area. If I was on the run and didn’t have any place to stay, that’s where I’d go.” he said.

Liz brightened. “That’s a really good idea!” she said excitedly.

“Of course, look at who thought of it.” he bragged, grinning. Liz slapped him and then said, “Let me get out my laptop.” she said, pulling out the equipment.

She turned it on and got to work. After about 20 minutes she shouted, “Eureka!” making Kyle jump.

“Jeez.” he muttered, cleaning the microwavable macaroni that he had spilled off of his clothes. “Warn me next time you decide to go crazy, ok?” he asked grumpily.

“Sorry.” Liz laughed, “But I managed to hack into the city’s records. According to this there are 10 abandoned buildings in the area.” she said, reading the information off the screen.

“So we search through all of the buildings…”

“And pray that our alien decided to stay in the area.” Liz finished, happy. Finally, they at least had a plan of some sort.

“We make a good team, Parker.” Kyle said. “So, now that we’re all done with work and everything, wanna have sex?” he asked, winking at her.

She gasped at his outrageous statement, and then laughed. Time with Kyle was never boring, that was for sure. Liz got up, walked over to the door, opened it and said, “Go to your hotel room.”

Kyle walked out the door, but then turned back to face her. “So that’s a no?” he asked. Liz slammed the door in his face.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Clear!” Liz yelled, lowering her gun.

“Same here.” Kyle said, returning his to it’s holster.

“Damn! This is the 7th one we’ve gone to! He hasn’t been in any of them!” Liz yelled, letting her frustration out.

“We still have three more to look at.” Kyle said as the exited the rundown building.

“Let’s hope he’s there.” Liz grumbled hopping into the passengers seat.

They drove to their next destination in silence. The next one was an old, run down house on the outskirts od town. When they arrived, they walked silently into the house, their guns in their hands. Kyle turned the opposite way of Liz, and, as she was checking out her end of the house she heard him fire two shots from his gun and then he was flying through the air.

A second later Liz’s tranquilizer gun was blasted out of her hand. She looked up and stared in horror at the alien they had been looking for. Not far away, Kyle laid in a heap. Liz quickly ducked behind a wall for cover, her eyes trained on her best friend. She saw that his chest was rising and falling, though erratically, and she let out a sigh of relief.

Then she jumped back out into the open room, well aware that she had no weapons against the alien but determined to catch it. “Put your hands behind your head!” she shouted threateningly. He turned to face her with a panicked look in his eyes, and then held up his hand.

‘Oh God’ Liz thought. ‘This is it. He’s going to kill me!’ She felt the air shift as she was thrown back into the wall. She wasn’t dead, but the wind got knocked out of her. She took gasping breaths, trying to return air to her lungs, and heard the alien’s footsteps as he left the building.

“Oh no you don’t!” she shouted, scrambling after him. She realized that she had no way to protect herself, but she also realized that if she called and told Pierce they had lost him again…she didn’t think there was any protection against Pierce’s wrath.

He hopped into Liz’s rental car, and Liz cursed herself for leaving it opened. The engine started and Liz, not knowing what to do, jumped in the passenger seat.

“Pull over now!” she shouted at him, trying to be as intimidating as possible.

“Get out!” he shouted, causing her to flinch. From somewhere in the area police alarms rang through the air. Liz realized that they were headed their way. Someone must have called because of the gunshots.

“Shit! I don’t have time for this, they’re going to be here any minute! Get out of the car!” he shouted, pushing the breaks and bringing the car to a halt.

“No, I'm not leaving here until you pull the car over and surrender yourself!" Liz said, hoping that the police would get there soon. At least it was some kind of back-up.

“Fine, if that’s what you want to do,” he said, stepping on the accelerator.

“What the hell are you doing?” Liz said as she watched the speedometer move form 50 to 60 m/h. He didn’t answer but just reached over and touched her head. She flinched, but then sank into her seat, unconscious.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Liz awoke to find herself in the back seat of her rental car. She looked around confusedly, wondering how she had managed to get back here. She got out of the car, having a hard time remembering what had happened to her.

“Kyle?” she called, looking around at the desert scenery. She heard the ground crunch behind her, and turned to see Max Evans, the alien.

“Oh my God!” she yelled, starting to take panicked steps backward.

He held out his hand again and Liz yelled, “No!” covering her head with her face. How was she going to get out of this?

And then he said something totally unexpected.

“Are you ok?” he asked.

Here's part 4! It's short, but I hope you like. And for those of you who want to know why I decided to rewrite this, it's because on the other one I got really burned out on writing it. Plus, I forgot Kyle last time! I wanted to add him in, since I loved Kyle in Season 3. Oh, and does anyone know why on the first page, it makes it so that you have to scoot the bar over sideways to see the words? Sorry if that didn't make any sense, but if anyone gets it and knows why, can they help me? I've posted a lot of things on this board, and never had anything like that happen.

Part 4

“What?” Liz asked, dumbfounded.

“Are you ok? No permanent damage?” he asked again, walking a little closer.

Liz took a step backward. “Your not going to kill me?” She asked, shocked.

“No.” he said, looking startled.

“Why not?” Liz asked, completely and utterly confused. Wasn’t he supposed to be an evil killing machine? Isn’t that what Pierce had told her?

“Are you complaining?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.

She shook her head quickly. “No, of course not but...but Pierce said—” she started, but he cut her off.

“What? That I was evil and would kill anyone I looked at?” he asked, anger dripping from his voice. “He lied. It’s how he justifies doing all of the things he does. “

Liz shook her head. “No—no he didn’t.” she said, unable to come up with anything better to say.

“I’m not killing you, am I?” he asked, his eyebrows raised.

Liz shook her head.

“And he told you I would, didn’t he?” he pressed.

Liz nodded.

“Then he lied.” he concluded bitterly.

“Why?” she whispered, unable to comprehend it.

“I don’t know. It’s hard to interpret the mind of a monster.” he said.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As soon as Kyle regained consciousness, he immediately dialed for Pierce

“He took her!” Kyle yelled erratically into the phone. He felt like he had broken a few ribs, but that was the least of his worries.

“What are you talking about, Valenti?” Pierce drawled into the phone.

“That...that thing! We found it in an old abandoned home. It sent me flying into the wall and then kidnapped agent Parker.” Kyle said, taking deep, even breaths and trying to calm down.

Pierce was silent for a second. “Did you see which direction it went?” he asked finally, sounding unconcerned about Liz’s situation.

“Uh, yeah, it went out toward the desert.” Kyle said, shocked. Didn’t he care that one of his very own agents went missing?

“I’ll send some of my men based in Roswell after him. What about you? Are you up for it, Agent Valenti?” Pierce asked.

Kyle pushed past his pain and said, “Of course.”

“What’s you location?” Pierce asked next.

Kyle told him the address and Pierce replied, “I’m sending backup. Stay there until they get there and then go with them. Direct them to which way it went. Got it?” he barked.

“Yes sir.” Kyle replied, and then the line went dead.

Kyle sighed and sat back, waiting for the team Pierce was supposed to be sending. It took everything in him not to jump up and go running into the desert all by himself, which was the stupidest thing he’d ever heard. Still, he didn’t know how long that thing would keep his best friend alive. Maybe she was already— No, no. She’s not dead. He couldn’t think like that.

At last, after what felt like hours of drowning in his frightening thoughts, Kyle saw a van drive down the road. He jumped up, ignoring the pain in his stomach, and hopped into the car before it had even come to a stop.

“What are you waiting for?” Kyle barked at the driver, who wasn’t moving. “Get going!”

“If you would tell me which way to head I would.” The driver snapped back, sounding peeved.

“Oh, sorry.” Kyle said, taking a deep breath. “That way.” he said, pointing. “Out into the desert.” he replied.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“What are you going to do?” Liz asked timidly, still keeping her distance from the—Max.

“I don’t know.” he said agitatedly. “I don’t have anywhere else to go.”

“No,” Liz said hesitantly. “I meant what are you going to do...with me?”

“Damn it, I have no clue.” he said angrily, and a small rock nearby shattered. Liz flinched and instinctively brought her hands up to guard her face.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them he seemed calmer. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I don’t usually let my powers get out of control.”

Liz nodded; not knowing what else to do, but he was too deep in thought to see the gesture.

Liz was about to ask him more questions when a loud BANG interrupted her. Both she and Max ducked instinctively, and since both were used to dangerous situations, both knew, without a doubt, that is was the sound of a gunshot.

“What the hell!?” Liz screeched, standing dead still. Max noticed her shocked stance and quickly grabbed her hand, pulling her behind a large rock.

“What’s going on?” Liz asked, panicky.

“It's the FBI. They’ve found me. Or I guess they've found us.” he said, sounding slightly panicky himself.

“What the hell are you talking about?!” she asked, just on the verge of losing it. “I am the FBI.”

“Yeah, well, apparently they don’t care anymore.” he bit out, flinching at each loud boom.

“What are you talking about!?" she questioned again, unable to comprehend what he was saying. "They wouldn’t try to take out their own agent!” Liz shrieked.

“They would if it means getting their target. They don’t care about a few losses to the department if their goal is reached.” he said, staring at her in amazemnet. She really had not idea as to what kind of people the Special Unit were.

“What...what are we going to do?” she asked fearfully.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm getting into this a little more!

Part 5

Kyle’s heart started beating erratically at the sight before him. Somehow they had managed to find both of them, and at the present moment, Liz was standing a few feet away from the alien, who had his hand raised at her. Kyle looked frantically around at the other occupants of the jeep, knowing they didn't have a lot of time to get Liz out of there.

“What’s the plan?!” he barked. “How are we going to save—?” His words died in his throat as the first shot went off. All of a sudden, there was a rush of movement as all of the agents pulled out their guns and started shooting. Kyle stared, horrified, as a bullet whizzed passed Liz’s ear, a mere couple of inches from her head.

“Stop it!” He bellowed, leaping on the nearest agent and trying to wrestle the gun from his hand. The agent pushed on his chest angrily.

“What the hell are you doing, Valenti?” he shouted, panting with the effort of holding Kyle back.

“What are you doing? That’s a fellow agent out there! The goal is to save her!” Kyle yelled back, his voice barely heard over the gunshots.

“No!” the man shouted. “The goal is to catch that thing...at whatever cost! We’re just following orders! Pierce doesn’t care if we lose one agent, as long as we get the alien!” he shouted, jerking his gun back.

Kyle froze as this news washed over him. Pierce’s orders. They were acting on Pierce’s orders. Which meant Pierce had basically given them the ok to murder one of his own agents.

“No!” he shouted in horror as he watched the bullets bite into the rock that his best friend was hiding behind. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the dark-haired alien move out from behind the same rock, lifting his hand in the air. And then, before Kyle knew it, he was flying back in the air for the second time that day. Only this time, the van went with him.

***********

Liz watched, wide-eyed, as the van flipped once...twice...three times. The sounds echoing in in the desert died out, leaving a ringing silence in it’s wake.

“How did you do that?” she whispered, her hand moving to cover her mouth.

“I just sent energy at it and caused it to flip over.” Max replied, holding his side and panting for breath. She realized that he was in pain and rushed to his side, putting her arm around his waist to steady him.

“Are you ok?” she asked gently, staring at his pale face worriedly.

“Since when do you care?” he asked softly, a trace of bitterness in his voice.

Liz paused, staring at the upturned van. “That—that was my side, my team. And they just tried to kill me.” she said finally, tears and confusion in her voice. “And my...my enemy just saved my life.” she said. “Why?”

He looked at her seriously. “Because I’m not your enemy. They told you I was, but I’m not. All I've ever tried to do is stay alive.” he said.

She didn't know how to respond to the pain in his voice, so she changed the subject. “Um, are you ok to stand?” she asked, slowly letting go of his waist when he nodded. She took a few steps away, staring at the van once more as if she hoped it would give her answers.

“We should—” he started to say from behind her, but a voice interrupted him.

“Get away from her!” Kyle shouted, pointing his gun at him. Liz turned quickly at the sound of his voice.

“Kyle!” she shouted happily, but then took in his bloodied appearance. “Oh god, Kyle!" she shrieked. "You were in there?” she asked, mortified.

Kyle, who had his eyes trained on Max, didn’t answer her. “I said get away!” he shouted angrily, waving his gun threateningly.

“Kyle no! You’ve got the wrong—” Liz started, but Max interrupted.

“Go ahead, shoot!” he dared, raising his hand. Kyle took this as a threat and pulled the trigger. At the same moment Liz dived in front of Max, catching the bullet in her stomach. The shot rang through the air as Liz slumped to the ground.

“Liz!” Kyle yelled, sounding shocked and horrified. He dropped his gun and ran to her, kneeling beside her.

“Liz, oh god, I’m sorry.” he cried, his voice breaking.

She grabbed his fingers weakly. “Kyle, listen to me—” she said, breaking off to take a ragged breath. “Don’t...hurt him, ok?” she asked, looking over at Max, who seemed to be in shock. Kyle turned to look at him too, just in time to see the young alien jump into action. He quickly moved over to Liz and Kyle, staring at the damage.

“Move.” He instructed urgently, still staring down at Liz’s wounded abdomen.

“Why—?” Kyle started, but was silenced when Max pushed him out of the way, taking his place next to Liz.

“Liz, you have to look at me.” he said gently, nudging her face up with his hand. She stared at him through heavily lidded eyes as he ripped her shirt open and placed his hands on the bullet wound. They started to glow, and a second later images flashed before her eyes.

2 naked children staring at a pair of headlights in the desert. A younger looking Mrs. Evans and her husband. A dark-haired child getting off of a school bus with a blonde girl, absolutely petrified about his first day of school. Another dark-haired boy with spiky hair and a hard look on his face. A graduation party in which a young looking Max hugged a beautiful blonde girl. Pierce’s face as he tortured Max ruthlessly. Her being shot.

And then it was over. Liz blinked and reached down, feeling Max’s hands on her stomach. She gently removed them and felt the area, which was now smooth and whole.

“Your all right now...your all right…” Max whispered, looking over her body for any other injuries.

“How—how did you…” she heard Kyle whisper in awe. Liz sat up, her ripped shirt falling off of her arms. Max quickly pulled off his jacket, wrapping it around her shoulders.

“You saved me.” she whispered, staring into his beautiful eyes and pulling his jacket tighter around herself. She frowned as she focused on the rest of his face and noticed that he was very pale.

“Are you alright?” she asked, concerned.

He nodded. “I’m fine.” he panted. “Just a little worn out.”

Kyle was still staring at Liz as if she was a ghost that had risen from the dead. “Lizzie...I...I’m so sorry.” he said, his voice hoarse.

She nodded. "It's ok Kyle." she said, smiling at him. Kyle's tense shoulders seemed to relax a bit.

“Come on,” Max said after he had regained his strength. “We have to get out of here before they send anyone else.” He turned to Kyle, “Are you coming, or are you going to try to shoot me again?” he asked, his voice taking a cool edge.

“You saved her.” Kyle said simply, as if that explained everything. “I trust you.”

"Than get in the car." he said, wrapping his arm around Liz's shoulders and helping her up.

Sorry for the wait guys! I’ve been bad about updating all of my stories. I’m really busy at the moment, so I don’t have a lot of time to write (life sucks sometimes :roll: ) Anyways, new part!

Part 6

Max’s chest rose and fell erratically as he struggled for air. First he had used his powers to tip over a van and then he had used them to heal Liz, and now he was exhausted. Still, they didn’t have time to stop and rest so he kept going, trying to ignore the tiredness plaguing his mind. Not that he regretted healing Liz. When he had seen her lying there on the desert floor, slipping away with every second that went by… he couldn’t even describe what he had felt besides the fierce need to heal her.

“Max, are you alright?” Liz asked again, resting her hand on his shoulder to grab his attention. A spark went through him at the contact, and he had to resist the urge to gasp.

“Yeah, fine. Just worn out.” he assured her, trying to even his breathing out.

He turned toward her for a second and caught her eye, and then quickly turned back to the road. Every time he saw her, he couldn’t resist thinking about the flashes he had gotten from her. He had seen her childhood, where she had grown up with an FBI agent as a father, and then he had seen her life with the FBI. It still stunned him that she was so naïve about the things her organization did, but from the looks of it she was finally catching on.

“Ok, what the hell happened back there?” Kyle asked, leaning through the gap in the middle of Max’s seat and Liz’s.

Max rolled his eyes in annoyance. He didn't like this Kyle guy one bit, but it seemed that Liz was attached to him. strangely enough, that did not improve Max's dislike, in fact it only increased it. “Uh the FBI tried to kill us, I rolled the van over, you shot Liz, I healed her. We all caught up now?” Max asked irritably.

Kyle shook his head. “Why? Why did they try to shoot her?” Kyle asked, running his hands through his hair. “It was a rescue mission… or at least I thought it was, until they started pulling their guns out.”

Liz, who had been listening silently, suddenly spoke. “We’re idiots, aren’t we?” she asked rhetorically. “We’re not important to him or to the big picture. We’re acceptable losses.” she said.

Max nodded, which irritated Kyle. “Oh how would you know? It’s not like you worked there or anything.” he said angrily.

“No, but they’ve been chasing me my entire life. I know what kind of person he is, what kind of people they all are!” he said angrily, but the anger died when he saw Liz’s stricken face and realized what he had said. “Liz, I didn’t mean you.” he said to her apologetically, and then turned to look at Kyle. “You I’m not so sure about.” he said in a harder tone.

Kyle stared right back at him. “I’m not so sure about you either.” he said.

****

Liz watched them bicker back and forth, thinking it looked more like a testosterone fight then a serious argument. She snapped her fingers to gain their attention before they could start comparing… things.

“Uh guys, this isn’t helping.” she said sternly, feeling like she was talking to 5 year olds. Then her voice got serious. “Max, Kyle’s ok, I swear. I know he’s...rough around the edges”— Kyle made an offended noise— “but he’s basically a good guy. And Kyle, Max just saved my life. Why would he do that if he wanted to kill us?” she asked logically. Kyle grunted but didn’t say anything, while Max gave a noncommittal nod. Liz rolled her eyes.

The car quieted for a little while, until Max asked, “Do either of you have a cell phone?”

Liz nodded. “Why?” she asked, already reaching for her back pocket. While she did so, Max’s oversize jacket slipped off of her shoulder and opened. Liz quickly moved to close it when something silver on her stomach caught her eye. She looked down at it, realizing it was a silver handprint, in the exact spot where she had been shot not 30 minutes before.

“I need to— what is it?” he asked when she gasped. She pulled the jacket closed partly so that in only showed her stomach. Then s-he turned towards him, showing him the mark.

“What is this?” she asked, her voice raising an octave.

“Oh,” he said, taking in the sight as if it was unimportant. “It's my seal. It means you're now my slave.” he answered. She shot him a horrified look and he grinned. Liz felt a shiver run through her at the unfamiliar sight. "I was kidding." he clarified, chuckling. "The mark appears when I heal a life-threatening injury. I don't know why." he said, and then prompted, "So the phone?"

“Oh right,” she said reaching into her back pocket again. She pulled her cell out, and handed it to him. “Who you going to call?” she asked.

He opened his mouth and then hesitated, looking as if he was debating with himself over something.

“The… others.” he said finally.

“The…” she trailed off comprehension dawning. “There are more of you?” she blurted out.

“Yeah,” he said defensively. “Sorry to disappoint you.”

“No,” she said quickly, “I’m just… surprised.”

He nodded awkwardly, and then started to dial the phone. She heard him mutter something like ‘Please pick up, please pick up…’ under his breath.

“Isabel?” he asked suddenly, sounding weak with relief. Liz heard the girl shriek as Max held the phone away from his ear and she wondered who the girl was, feeling an unusual feeling run through her. Then she remembered that Max had a sister named Isabel, and felt a sense of relief that she wasn't quite willing to admit.

“I’m ok, how are you guys doing?” he asked, sounding concerned again. He listened and the tension in his face slackened a bit. “Thank God. Where are you?” he asked and then paused again.

“Ok, I’ll be there in about 15 minutes.” he said, and then flipped the phone closed.

“Your sister?” Liz asked after he had hung up.

“How did you...” he started, drifting of when he realized that she was in the FBI and probably knew every little fact about him.

“Where are we going?” Liz asked after an awkward silence.

He sighed. “The cave.”

Here's the new part finally! Sorry for the long wait guys! Hope you enjoy!

Part 7

“Michael, we have to get him out of there!” Isabel Evans yelled at her best friend and fellow alien, her eyes filling up with tears.

“I know!” Michael said angrily. “But what are we supposed to do? If you have any ideas, I would be glad to here them!”

“Well not leaving him back there when he was caught by the FBI would have been a start!” Isabel yelled back, guilt clouding her features.

Michael’s face fell for a moment, but a second later his mask was back in place. “What good would that have done?!” He burst out, but then stopped when he saw her flinch. “Izzy, if we had stayed and been caught with him, there’d be no way we could help him. At least now we have a chance of getting him out.” Michael explained in a much softer voice.

“I can’t stand just waiting around and doing nothing!” Isabel cried brokenly, and her tall, lanky boyfriend quickly appeared at her side.

“Isabel,” Alex said soothingly. “He’s right. Now that we’re here, we can try to think of a plan.” he said rubbing her back gently. Instead of shoving Alex back and telling him she didn’t need his comfort like she would have done with everyone else, Isabel settled further into his embrace.

Maria Deluca walked up to her boyfriend and placed a calming hand on his arm. “Michael, you’re his second him command. It’s your call.” she said gently.

Michael ran his hands through his hair and started to speak when Isabel’s phone rang. Isabel’s eyes widened in fright as she pulled out the offending piece of technology. “What do I do?” she asked, holding it at arms length like the cell phone was a disgusting bug.

“Answer it.” Michael told her.

Isabel took a shaky breath and then flipped the phone open. “Hello?” she asked breathlessly. The cave was silent for a moment as she listened to the person on the other end, and then she let out a shrill, “Max!!!” and her face lit up in relief and joy. Michael started to speak, but she shushed him with a warning glare and a point of her finger.

“We’re all fine. Michael, Alex, Maria and I are all ok.” she reassured, and then paused to listen.

“We’re at the cave.” she told him, frowning. “Max, how are you? How’d you get away? What did they do—” she broke off and listened again, her frown deepening.

“Ok but—” she stopped talking and let out a sound reminiscent to a growl, slamming the phone closed. “Stupid idiot hung up on me.” she said, more to herself than to them.

“Well?! What did he say? Is he all right? Isabel, start talking!” Michael bellowed. She sent him an annoyed look.

“Stop yelling at me!” she snapped, her eyes flashing. “I don’t know what’s going on.” she said, and her face shifted into a worried look.

“What do you mean, you don’t know what’s going on?” Michael asked, his voice softening at the concern on her face. “Is he out of there?” he asked anxiously.

“Yeah, and he’s coming… but I don’t know, he was acting really weird.” she said worriedly.

“Weirder than usual?” Alex piped in, and Isabel sent him the your-being-insensitive look. “Sorry,” he said immediately. “I tend to make inappropriate jokes when I’m worried or upset.” he apologized.

Maria rolled her eyes. “What do we do now?” she asked the room at large.

Isabel shrugged, looking to be in deep thought. “He said he’d be here in about 15 minutes. I guess we wait.”

~~~~~~~~~
“The cave?” Liz echoed, not comprehending.
Max ran his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath. It seemed that his fatigue was finally starting to get to him. “It’s a long story. It’s the place where we were born.” he replied.
“Born?” she mused.
“Hatched.” he corrected.
“Hatched?”
He sent her a smile. “Your kind of curious for an FBI agent.” he joked.
“And your kind of sweet for an alien.” she quipped, and although their tones were light, both realized the underlying meaning to their statements and once again remembered that they were on separate sides.
"I can't believe we're trusting one of them." Kyle complained in a mumble from the back seat after watching their little banter.
Liz let out a long suffering groan. "Kyle, one more word, and we pull over and kick you out of the car." she threatened.
Max made a noise of approval. "We could do that anyway.” he said hopefully. Liz sent him a scolding glare.
“Why do I feel like the mother of a couple of over-emotional 2 years olds?” she asked, raising her brows at each of them.
“He started it.” Kyle pouted.
“Did not.” Max retorted.
Liz let out a sigh of frustration. “Max, eyes on the road. Kyle one more word and I swear…” she left the sentence dangle and sent him a threatening glare.
Both men quieted, and Liz turned toward the window and gazed at the desert scenery. As amusing as everything seemed at the moment, she knew the comfort was only temporary, and that eventually everything was going to blow up in their faces. Unsure of what to do, she kept quiet, thinking to herself.
"You guys ready to deal with 4 very pissed and cranky people?" Max asked a while later, more to himself then to either of them.
"Uh, why?" Liz asked as Max pulled off the road and into the desert. He pulled the car to a stop, opened his door, and then walked around to open Liz's.
"Because we're here."
Ok, I’m sooo happy with the response you guys have given me! I was starting to think I didn’t have any readers, but it looks like a few of you are still here. Thanks so much for voting, and for sticking with me!
And without further delay, on with the next part!
Oh, and does anyone know how to get rid of the poll? :roll: I've never used one before, and I can't get the thing to go away.
Part 8
“Uh, Max, I don’t see a cave,” Liz stated slowly, glancing around the area as she stepped out of the car. All she saw was a large rock formation jutting into the sky.
“I know,” he replied simply, and then added, “We’re going up there.” He indicated to the rock resting on top of the hill. When she made no movement, he sent her a questioning look. She glanced up at the hill and then back at him, and then trustfully followed him as he started to climb.
“Liz!” Kyle called, stumbling out of the car and running to catch up to her. She stopped and waited, feeling Max walk up protectively behind her. She looked back at him quizzically, wondering why he wanted to protect her from Kyle.
“He shot you,” he said in a low voice, placing a hand on the small of her back as Kyle approached.
“Are you crazy??” Kyle asked. “You’re just going to follow him to God knows where? Liz come on, this has gone on long enough! We’re leaving!” He said, grabbing Liz’s wrist and pulling her forward. Max’s reaction was instantaneous. He jumped forward, coming between Kyle and Liz, and held his hand up in Kyle’s direction.
“What the hell?!” Kyle said, his eyes widening at Max’s battle position.
“Let her go,” Max ordered in a growl, not moving his eyes away from Kyle’s face. Kyle glanced down at his hand, which was still wrapped around Liz’s wrist, but instead of letting go he pulled Liz over to his side. Max made a lunging movement, as if to grab her back, but Liz jerked her wrist away from Kyle and stopped him.
“Hey!” Liz yelled, her voice cutting through the still desert. “That’s enough! Max, put your hand down; Kyle isn’t going to hurt me. And Kyle, don’t you ever try to manhandle me again. I’m going with Max—”
“Liz, he’s crazy!” Kyle interrupted, talking about Max as if he wasn’t there. “There’s no way I’m letting you go traipsing off into the unknown with him! We have to go back to Pierce—”
Max flinched at the name, causing Liz’s already heated temper to blow. “It’s my choice, Kyle! And he’s not crazy!” Liz yelled, her eyes flashing. “And in case you haven’t noticed, the people that you want to report back to, the people we work for, they just tried to kill me!!!”
Kyle stared in stunned disbelief at the anger on Liz’s face. Then, in a quieter voice, he said, “Do what you want Liz, but I’m not letting you go anywhere with him alone.” he said, jerking his finger in Max’s direction.
“Fine,” Liz said, rolling her eyes and returning to her trek up the hill. Max quickly followed, moving to walk beside her.
“I don’t know why you trust him so much, you don’t even know him. And he’s an alien, doesn't that count against him? But no, I'm the one who get's yelled at…” Kyle grumbled in a barely audible voice as he clambered after the other two.
After a few minutes of hiking, the trio reached the top of the hill. Liz looked around in confusion; there was nothing up here but a large boulder.
“Max, what—” she started, but was stopped short when Max ran his hand above a spot in the large rock. Liz gasped in as a silvery handprint appeared on the rock, and then watched in fascination as Max put his hand on it. A second later, the ground shook as part of the rock fell away, revealing a dark, slightly musty entrance.
Max turned to the others and opened his mouth to speak when a statuesque blonde hurled out of the cave and flung herself into Max’s arms.
“Max!” She shrieked, hugging him close to her as he tried to balance them. “Oh my God, I was so worried…” she said, holding onto him for dear life. Liz viewed the women’s profile as she clung to Max, thinking the photographs she had seen didn’t do the blonde justice. Isabel Evans was much more beautiful in person.
“Uh, Izzy, thanks,” Max said, slightly out of breath. “But if you don’t let go of me right now, I think I might suffocate.”
Isabel let go of him at once and stepped back, gazing at her brother through teary eyes.
“Oh Max…” She said, teardrops rolling down her cheeks. A second later a tall but lanky man with dark hair walked up to her, looping his arm over her shoulders. Max’s sister turned into the man’s embrace, crying her eyes out as he held her tight. Max looked uncomfortable, but sent a grateful look the other man's way.
“Maxwell,” Another male said from behind the group. This one was much more solid than the first, with spiky brown hair.
“Michael,” Max replied. They stared at each other for a second, and then shared a masculine hug.
“Good to have you back,” the man named Michael said in an oddly stiff manor.
Max studied him for a moment, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully. “Michael, it wasn’t your fault,” he said quietly, seemingly picking up on the other man’s thoughts.
“Yes it was,” the man named Michael replied, “I should have—” he broke off as he caught sight of Liz and Kyle, who had been standing awkwardly to the side throughout the reunion. The man’s gaze darkened and he scowled.
“Who the hell are they?” he asked, suspicion strong in his voice.
“They’re—” Max hesitated, looking as if he was battling with himself. “They’re FBI, and then know,” he replied after a long intense pause, his voice leaving no doubts as to what exactly Liz and Kyle knew.
The words seemed to reverberate in the quiet, echoing desert. Then, after a confused pause, Michael's eyes widened in comprehension as Isabel’s soft sobs suddenly ceased. She pulled away from Alex, looking at Liz and Kyle with wide, fearful eyes. There was a tense quiet, in which the entire group seemed to ready itself for something.
The next thing Liz knew she was flying back in the air, landing hard on her back about 10 feet away. Before she could move or get over her shock, the rock next to her head exploded. She shrieked and covered her face, trying to regain her breath. More rocks around her exploded, and she struggled desperately to get away from the flying debris.
“Michael, stop!” She heard someone yell, and a second later Max’s concerned face came into her view. He kneeled down and helped her into a sitting position, supporting her back with his arm.
“Are you ok? Do I need to heal anything?” he asked, his eyes worried.
“N—no,” She wheezed, coughing a little. “I just lost my breath.”
He nodded, but still looked worried. To prove that she was fine, she brushed his arm away and stood up. Suddenly worried, she looked around for Kyle.
“Kyle!” She shrieked, spotting him lying on the ground two feet away. She started to run over to him. “Max, help him!” Liz yelled, worry lacing her voice.
“No,” Kyle spoke suddenly, heaving himself up. “I’m fine.” he said determinedly.
Liz was about to answer when an enraged yell sounded from behind her. Alarmed, the thought of Michael’s attack still fresh in her mind, Liz jumped behind Max and gazed at the other aliens over his shoulder.
“Maxwell what the hell are you thinking!” Michael roared. “They know our secret! We have to get rid of them!”
Max’s eyes flashed. “Michael, we can’t kill them,” Max said firmly, his voice daring Michael to argue.
“Max, now is not the time for your never-harm-a-single-human-no-matter-how-bad-they-are bullshit. We have to get rid of them, before they go running off to their boss!" He said, sneering at Liz.
“They’re not going to,” Max said wearily, rubbing his eyes. “Look, Michael, will you just let me explain?” he asked pleadingly.
Michael stared at him for a long moment, his eyes hard. After a few seconds, he lowered his hand and grunted, “This better be good.”
Thanks for all the feedback!!! I know this took a while, but I finally sat down and wrote a new part. Hope you enjoy!!!
Part 9
By the time Max finished explaining a shorter and more censored version of the trio’s story, everyone was standing on the cliff with their mouths hanging open. Michael was, unsurprisingly, the first to speak.
“So your saying that you kidnapped her,” he pointed a finger in Liz’s direction, “and then that guy came after you with the FBI, who were in a van that you flipped over.” Michael summarized, looking as if he didn’t know what to think of the new information.
“Yes,” Max said wearily, “and then Liz jumped in front of a bullet to save me, and I healed her,” he finished.
Michael’s eyes clouded in angry confusion. “That still doesn’t explain why you brought them here.” he said, sounding as if he was trying to make a futile effort to understand Max’s reasoning.
“Yes, because the FBI was trying to kill them too,” Max explained slowly, as if talking to a 5 year old.
“But… Max, you can’t do this!” Michael burst out, apparently tired of trying to understand. “We... we can't have FBI sitting in the cave!”
“Oh, and what are you planning on doing with us then?” Liz dared him, still standing safely behind Max.
“Oh, I’m sure we could think of something,” he sneered. “Maybe a little of that stuff Pierce does in his white rooms.”
Liz paled noticeably, and seemed to shrink back. It was clear that this also struck a chord with Max, who said, in a very commanding voice, “You have no idea what went on in there,” he said coldly, glaring harshly at Michael, “Or you’d know that I’d never wish that on anyone, not even my worst enemy.”
Something flickered behind Michael’s grey eyes, but he didn’t back down. “ They are your worst enemy! They're the ones that did this to you!” he shouted.
Liz made small sound in the back of her throat. “I would… never…” she muttered and turned around, quickly wiping her eyes, where tears had unexpectedly sprung.
“Hey,” she heard from behind her, and turned to see Max’s concerned eyes gazing at her.
“I wouldn’t… I didn’t know…” she muttered, unable to speak her mind. He seemed to understand.
“I know,” he said simply, wiping away a tear that had escaped from her eye.
“Shit,” someone muttered, and both Max and Liz turned quickly; Isabel was staring at the pair of them with a strange expression on her face.
“Izzy…” Max started, apparently interpreting the mysterious look.
“No, Max this is… this is beyond stupid, ok?” she said, her voice taking on a shrill quality. “Do you have any idea… what if they run back to their boss and tell them where we’re hiding?!” she said, her eyes widening fearfully.
“Yeah, Max,” Michael seconded, “How do you know all of it wasn’t an act?”`
Max ran his fingers through his hair, looking extremely frustrated. “Because I just know! But if you’re going to keep questioning me, there’s really no way I can prove it…” he said.
Liz spoke up, feeling both nervous and upset. “Look,” everyone looked at her; Michael turned his head sharply. “I don’t know what to say to convince you, but I promise you I won’t do anything…” Liz said, not entirely sure she was telling the truth. Because Liz didn’t know what to do; she was so confused about the entire mess.
“Look, I’m not trying to rush things, but we need to get inside,” Max said, glancing nervously over his shoulder.
Michael hesitated. “This discussion is not over, Max,” Michael warned, though he was glancing around as well.
“Fine, Michael,” Max relented, “Just get in the cave.”
Michael walked over and grabbed a small blonde’s hand and tugged her inside. Alex and Isabel followed them in, walking in together, side by side.
“Come on. It isn’t safe out here,” Max said, taking Liz’s hand. Liz felt a warm feeling spread through her at the contact. She let Max lead her into the cave, but then halted at the entrance, pulling away from Max and gasping.
The entire cave was illuminated in a soft green light. Looking left Liz saw the source of the light; 4 large pod-like structures secured to the opposite wall. She walked forward, oblivious to where she was going; her foot caught on a large rock, pitching her forward. She let out a small yell as the fell and landed into a pair of strong arms.
Max had appeared out of nowhere, catching her body up against his chest to keep her from falling face first into the stone floor.
“You ok?” he asked, his light brown eyes trained on her face.
Liz was unable to speak, so she just nodded. They stared into each other’s eyes for a few seconds, caught up in the moment. After several long minutes, a throat cleared in the distance, causing them to jump apart guiltily. They turned to see everyone staring at them. Liz looked to her right and noticed Kyle had made it into the cave; he was staring at her with an unreadable expression on his face.
“Shut it,” Michael said, nodding toward the entrance. Max raised his eyebrows, clearing telling Michael that he wasn’t in charge here. So then, who was?
Michael, seeming to have gotten the message, walked over to the entrance and closed it. The sound of the rock banging into place echoed eerily along the silent cave.
“So,” Michael said after a minute. “What are we going to do with them?”
“Why does anything have to be done with us?” Liz asked, still standing close to Max for protection. Michael sent her a disgusted look.
Michael indicated to a section of rock over his shoulder. Liz looked closely and noticed a small opening. “Come on, let’s go in there,” he said, giving a look to both Max and Isabel.
Max sighed, but seemed to think it better to go along with Michael. “Stay here,” he said turning to Liz.
“Of course,” she replied, smiling slightly. She watched as the three climbed in to the small hole. The she turned to the rest of the people in the cave. “Hi, I’m Liz,” she said cheerfully to the two people she didn’t know.
“What are you doing?” Michael asked as they gathered around the granilith chamber.
“I don’t know,” Max answered truthfully, rubbing his eyes. Why did he always feel so tired? Wouldn’t this drowsy weariness ever go away?
“Max, that’s not acceptable,” Michael replied, looking livid.
“Well, what would you like me to say?” Max asked, his voice filling with anger.
“Why don’t you start by explaining why two FBI agents are sitting in our cave?” Michael replied, his voice just as rough.
“Look, will you two just calm down for a second?” Isabel broke in, speaking for the first time. “We need to figure out what—”
“I already told you their story Michael. It just happened; there wasn’t a lot of time to think about what I was doing!” Max interrupted, staring Michael straight in the eye. He saw him open his mouth once more and cut him off. “Do you really think I’d bring them here If they were anything like Pierce?” he asked, his voice rising. “They aren’t Michael, especially not the girl. I saw her when I healed her. There’s no way she could be evil.”
“They’re with the FBI, aren’t they? That’s not exactly convincing,” Michael countered quickly, not looking remotely convinced.
“I know, I thought the same thing. But I saw that too while I was connected to her. They lied to her. They told her we were the type of monsters that come with laser beams and take over the earth. She thought she was helping.”
“You sound pretty damn sure.” Michael replied, and then he paused. “I think you’re letting the wrong head lead you in this, Maxwell. I mean, I can’t help but admit that she’s relatively attractive, but you can’t let—”
“It’s got nothing to do with that!” Max burst out, but Isabel interrupted.
“Don’t lie Max.” She said, her face steely. “It may not be you’re whole reason, but you know you feel something for her. I can see it.”
Max didn’t know what to say, so he didn't comment on this. “Can’t you guys just trust me? I’m supposed to be the leader, hell, you remind me of it every two seconds, so why is it when I try to lead you always second guess me?”
There was a long silence in which both Isabel and Michael seemed to be thinking Max’s words over. After a long while, Michael spoke up. “I just don’t want us in any more danger. We’ve gone through so much already…”
“I understand that; better than anyone. And I can’t promise that we won’t be in danger, but Liz and Kyle won’t cause it.” Max replied truthfully.
Michael’s face furrowed as he seemed to think over Max’s words. “I guess I haven’t got much of a choice, but they don’t leave here. The stay with one of us at all times. We can’t risk them running back to the FBI and telling them where we are. They’re with us now.”
“Fine,” Max replied, knowing he wasn’t going to get a better answer. “Now can we go back there?” he asked, indicating to the outside room.
The other two hesitated. “There’s one more thing, Max.” Isabel said softly, her face slightly pale.
“Yes…?” Max asked, wondering if he could handle any bad news. When neither spoke, his fear grew. “Isabel, what’s—?”
“For the past few nights I’ve been having these dreams,” she interrupted, talking quickly.
“Dreams?” Max echoed questioningly.
“Not dreams, more like dream walks, except I’m not initiating them.” She took a deep breath, and then blurted, “Max, I think there’s another one of us out there, and I think she’s in trouble.”
