The Story of My Life - Chapter 10 - 11/20/2020

Post by Parker1947 »

“She’s a classic example in many ways of an only child, but without an influence of having a father in her life” Isabel admitted as she sat and visited with her brother. Michael was still on his call, and had not come back into the room yet, and therefore after the initial burst of talking about his wishes, Max could not help but ask about Olivia. The child he knew he had fathered and had been raised so close to him, but also so far away “It doesn’t help that Liz had spent so much time having to work, to put a roof over their head” she sighed. “We tried to help out, and Michael and Kyle were able to help be positive male role models, as she grew but she’s no longer a child.”

“She’s sixteen?” Max asked as if to agree, but also to state it with amazement, as he murmured “Liz works too much?”

“Yeah, given the time that Olivia and the cloud she was born under. Liz tried to pick up the piece and go to school and get her degree. She made it into medical school, and she is now a doctor working in her own practice. During those years, our parents and Jeff and Nancy, and they still do, but of course Olivia is now sixteen and she has always been more independent because of the nature of dealing with living with a working parent. So, Liz cannot be there for her daughter as much as she would like. And even when she does, well, Olivia is a teen girl, and they rebel…”

“They do,” Max murmured as he remembered back to that time. And how Liz had gone against her parents to see him, and he wondered sometimes what if they had been forced to split, and they hadn’t tried again, but then he couldn’t live his life knowing he didn’t have Liz’s love in his life, and now knowing they had created something so precious. It led to a lot of conflicting feelings and yet to see that his wife was able to achieve her dreams and was now a doctor. Which was something he had always wanted for her. He did not want to be the reason why she could not do something.

“So, she and Alex, they are getting serious?” Max asked as he did not like this entrance into parenthood, and the fact she was now her own person. Hearing Isabel say that his daughter was influenced by not having a father, it did not make it easy to hear or to know that his sister was, right, he had changed many of a life when he chose to confess. Max knew he didn’t regret it because I was preventing too much from happening but still it didn’t make it easy to know he had made things difficult for his wife, and she had taken too much of the burden in raising their daughter without him being there.

“In some ways, too serious” Isabel murmured.

“Oh,” Max said taking the hint, and he did not like that feeling You were not there Max, so you can’t have an opinion because being a absentee parent doesn’t give you a right.

“They have been dating since they were fourteen. In the early days, it was easy, and just two teenagers spending time together, but now, it has progressed, and it is not easy on your wife, or Michael and Maria to know. But they cannot stop it. Because they are afraid of what they might do if they step in, and Liz is guided by what happened with the two of you?”

“Right,” Max acknowledged as he remembered how much Jeff Parker had disapproved of their relationship after Utah, and how Liz had rebelled to be able to spend time with him, and it makes it hard to say no to the actions of your own children if you ignore sanity to be with your boyfriend after you robbed a convenience store and was nearly sent to prison, but had done time in jail.

Isabel knew both Max and Liz could not help but remember their trials while dating. “They are both good kids. In a lot of ways Olivia is very much like the both of you, and she’s going places because she has a lot of ambition, just like her mother, but still she can’t help herself, and Alex is a teenage boy so he’s not going to show much restraint,” she laughed. “Liz is trying. She and Olivia are super close, but still…”

“She can’t be there?” Max asked.

“Nope,” Isabel shook her. “Someone has to pay the bills?”

“She was so confident to come here of all places, and act like she didn’t have a worry at all” Max commented as he still remembered his encounter. “She didn’t think her mother would be happy” he asked of his wife. “She didn’t want Olivia to see me, right?”

“She wasn’t,” Isabel admitted. “But given what Olivia did find out about you, the lectures were shelved”

“The guard told her, didn’t he?” Max asked. “I saw on his face the glee in finding out Olivia was my daughter,” he murmured as he thought of the parts of his life that he didn’t want his daughter knowing and knew it was going to be hopeless. “Does she hate me?”

“She did have some strong opinions because she was able to do research and was able to find out some of the gory details but without any context to the what might be other side of the story,” Isabel admitted. “It’s 2019. The way of the world is different than it was twenty years ago. Violence against women is deplored regardless of motivation or consent. So, last I heard Liz has been giving your daughter a glimpse into the past…”

“She is?” Max asked surprised. “Why?”

“So that your daughter doesn’t look at you as a monster who attacked her mother, and almost killed her…” she muttered And, to prevent any traipsing down similar paths maybe…

“God,” Max sighed as he hated himself, and still tortured himself over those memories of what he had done as Clayton, and how his soulmate had come so close to losing her life at his hands, and if he hadn’t brought out the energy field, than she might have been dead, and he might have killed her.” I would want to be dead if that were have happened. And maybe I would have, if Liz had not survived and kissed me, and brought me back. We might have both been dead, and it would have gone down at my hands. My family would have had to live with that.
He hated his life.

“In some ways to Olivia, she can look past the massacre even if you were guilty of that. But violence against her mother, that took everything to different level.”

“I never wanted to hurt Liz,” Max said quietly. “The last thing I would do was ever lay a hand on her, if I was in my right mind” he murmured. “I would want to be dead if I had been successful. And I am in this place because of it so yeah, I still live to regret those times, and how even earlier I reacted in the wake of Alex’s death with you…”

“I am past that Max,” Isabel murmured as she thought back to those times when Tess had gotten into Max’s mind and change his behavior in some ways, and the way he reacted was so not typical for her brother. “We all were acting badly during that time” she sighed as the door opened and Michael came back in. “Important call?”

“Yeah,” Michael murmured.

“They are going to bust this talk shortly,” Max murmured. “So, do you think I have a chance?” he asked. “My case…”

“It’s not going to be easy,” Isabel murmured. “We have no proof that Tess is guilty except a photograph and our own knowledge. You confessed. You probably could get time served on the other charge that relates to Liz. But the army base explosion and massacre, that is going to be tough to do unless we can prove you weren’t there…”

“I wasn’t,” Max muttered. “I was with Liz part of that day until Mom invited us to dinner to talk about that videotape. Then Tess showed up with the baby, obviously having committed the first burst of violence at the base” he sighed. “She even admitted it to me, and Jim and Kyle are proof that they were initially looking for a blonde girl, who had disappeared with the baby?”

“Liz is someone you stand convicted of attempting to kill. And because she is married to you, she can’t testify against you, but they aren’t going to take her assurances that you were nowhere near the base when Tess first showed up because she can’t say for sure that you weren’t there” she sighed. “You were living on your own, and it was the middle of the night, and she went home after she dropped off Tess, and experienced the explosion. It was the middle of the night, and everyone was asleep…”

“I saw the spaceship crash,” Michael murmured as flashes popped into his brain of those days because he had been himself sullen and annoying to be around because he was dealing with the side effects of his time having been engrained with the seal once Max had died, and come back to life. He had not taken well to the resurrection of his best friend who he had seen turn into ash, and to know his best friend was now back in a new body. The adjustment period had been just as rough for him as it was for Max. So, he was alienating everyone and was just out for a ride on his bike when he saw a flash of a ship crashing, and then also a army base planet going down, and he was forced onto a mission to save that the human pilot from the Special Unit because the pilot had seen too much in the days before Tess created ultimate carnage by killing people at the base. “We know the government lied…” he muttered. “They knew it was a UFO ship?”

“Your son was at the scene, but he was a baby so he’s not a useful witness” Isabel sighed as Max was forced to think of the child he had put up for adoption. “Michael and I have been looking at the case since you first went to prison Max, and it’s very tough because the government won’t want to help us, and they wanted you convicted in the first place” she sighed. “Unless we find proof?”

“So, let’s take some tentative steps” Max asked. “First though, I want to see Liz. Can you get me permission?”

“The court won’t like it…” Isabel muttered. “It will be something for them to fight.”

“She’s my wife. If she wants to see me. Should they not allow it?” he asked. “I am allowed overnight visits with my spouse. I haven’t asked for it all these years, but aren’t I allowed this privilege?”

“One of your convictions relate your wife. So, they might say no.”

“Ask Liz if she wants to see me,” Max asked praying that his wife did want to see him as desperately as he wanted to see her. “Tell her that I am sorry for staying away, and hurting her but I do want to see her if would come and see me…”

“I’ll will check with her,” Isabel murmured because she did sense Liz would want to see Max, despite it being almost seventeen years. Sometimes your heart will not stop loving despite the years that have gone by, she mused as the door open and the guard came in and ending their discussions. “I’ll deal with what I have to on my end and will be back within a few days,” Isabel murmured as she hugged her brother who gladly took the hug because he had missed it, and missed the connection to those he had loved. “I need you to stay safe, okay?”

“I will,” Max nodded and acknowledged Michael who nodded as he watched them walk out before the guard came back and escorted him back to his cell and he felt the coldness of the room as the cell bars opened, and then closed on him, and he looked around and it became clear that he wanted out of this place.

He needed to see his wife and daughter again…

*

Meanwhile Liz’s tale and wild journey into the past was interrupted by a phone call. “Yeah, I understand. I’ll meet you two there, as I don’t think there is much to worry about but yeah, you don’t want to be on the safe sound,” she murmured as she looked at her daughter and knew it was another night of working to late, and getting home late into the night. No wonder her daughter was in the state that she was, given how independent Olivia was.

You cannot pressure her to spend time with her grandparents when she has her driver’s license and can pick up her boyfriend and go anywhere their heart desires. She remembered that time. She remembered how she would get into Max’s car on a split-second notice and they would leave the state on missions, and while they were not reckless in their intimacy until they were older and committed despite close calls. Still they had engaged in dangerous activities together, and she was not stupid or hypocritical to call her daughter out on it when she had done the same stuff, with more lasting implications back when she was sixteen herself. As she hung up, she turned to her daughter. “Um…”

“I know, you have to go to work?” Olivia muttered.

“Yeah,” Liz nodded. “I am sorry, it’s an emergency and I promise to meet a patient at the hospital. They might be overcautious, but I know the daughter has been having issues lately, so I need to check up on it.”

“Go ahead,” Olivia mumbled.

“I’ll try to be home as soon as I can, okay?” Liz asked. “Please stay home will you. I don’t want to worry about you driving around town in the dark.”

“Yes Ma’am” Olivia sighed, and Liz paused because she could see the wariness in the teenager’s eyes, and knew that look well, because she had felt the same way many years before…

“I do love you; you know…” Liz murmured as she glanced into her daughter’s eyes. “As you can obviously see from my story that we have to table until tomorrow that given the nature of my life as you’ve heard until now, it would easily be described as dramatic, and I don’t want that same drama to befall on you okay? So, yes, I might be a little overprotective, but I worry about you, and still I know you will make your choices. And you will have to live with the consequences of those choices. All I am asking is for you to be careful, okay?”

Olivia sighed but nodded because she still could not come to terms with how dramatic things had been for her parents. How could two people survive that kind of angst she mused to herself. But maybe they did not. Dad ended up in prison and Mom ended up with me, as a single mother as she again nodded and hugged her mother who gladly took the embrace, as soon Liz left the house, and Olivia was moments later looking for trouble by going to the phone and calling Alex and invited him over.

*

“When I drop you off, I’m headed over to Liz’s” Isabel murmured as she and Michael had not talked much on the drive home. The tension was thick in the car, because the pandora box of the past had been reopened and neither knew what it would mean because they both desperately wanted to succeed so that they could bring Max home.

Visiting Max in prison was a showcase how their lives had moved on, and his had stayed the same. As they married and had children. He grew older in a small cement cell with guards making sure he did not go anywhere he should not and monitoring his every move. It was no life to lead. And they had it easy. They found love and raised families and Max had not had that option. Even if Liz had told him about Olivia. Still the same would have happened. Forced behind cement walls and unable to come out, and now they had to figure out how to get him out when he confessed Tess’s crime, and there was no proof that she committed it.

And the only witness was a tiny baby.

“Sure,” Michael nodded.

“He’s lost a lot of weight?” Isabel murmured of her brother. “I can’t help but think he’s paying for crimes we all did at the time. Both of us should be in there with him, and yet he’s taking the brunt of it while we have been happy out here…”

“How can we prove that Tess did it?” Michael asked.

“I have no idea,” Isabel murmured as she drove back to the town they had grown up.

“That is wild,” Alex said as they sat in the living room of the home that she shared with her mother. She had known how much her mother had slaved to make it a home for her, after her early months of life was spent with her grandparents over the Crashdown. But when she was a year old, Liz wanted out of the small apartment. Since Maria and Michael were married, and had the twins, she could not room with them, so she found an apartment of her own, and saved money and worked through medical school and finally found the home of her dreams. It did not take being a rocket scientist to know how much her mother had sacrificed for her, and here she was on the catalyst of her own life changing situation.

She had just filled in Alex on some of the story, and what she had learned so far. She could not help but think of her situation more and more after days of trying to ignore the subject. She knew she had to come to terms with it.

“Alex…” Olivia murmured as her tone changed.

“It’s up to you,” Alex answered immediately as if he had some psychic connection into what she was thinking. They both knew her powers so far was mostly in her mind, as she was like her mother in many ways, and his was more physical. Still all of them seem to know when one of them needed help, and Alex knew what she had to be thinking. “I will totally support you, whatever you do or decide?”

“I am sixteen…” Olivia muttered.

“And I am almost,” Olivia acknowledged his sixteenth coming up within weeks. “We were reckless, but we did use protection.”

“Yeah, but I guess not everything is 100% safe” Olivia answered. “I hear what Mom and Dad went through, and we haven’t even gotten past the fact Dad has another kid besides me, and to think what both of them had to go through…”

“You don’t have to go through it alone,” Alex asked. “I am here…”

“I know,” Olivia sighed. “I do want something from my life, and yet I know this baby might be special. My brother was human or so they say, and that is why Dad decided what he did. But this baby is from both of us…”

Alex nodded.

“I think of my mother when she had me. She was 18. She did it the hard way. She could have very easily have gotten rid of me because Dad was in prison and she would have had to do it herself. She had the support sure, but it was all on her. Dad wasn’t letting her in, and even if she had told him, what kind of a father could he be behind prison walls, and someone I only saw when Mom took me to visit.”

“Your mother did take a chance,” Alex agreed.

“We have been together a long time now, but I don’t know if we are long-term potential. Do you?” Olivia asked.

“I love you…” Alex murmured. “I can’t know what our future is but if you decide to go forth with the baby, then I will help out. And even if one day we cannot continue, I will always be there for you and the baby. You are someone special to me, and I don’t want that to end, just because something lasting came from us being together.”

“I love you too,” Olivia murmured as they kissed. “But we haven’t gone through nearly as much as Mom and Dad did before I came along. I have always lived in the moment because the long term is so fluid. Everything changes, and life has never been kind to Mom or me. Sure, I have a loving family. But I did not have my Dad. Mom did not have the man she loves. To this day she loves him. No matter what he might have done, or to her, still she loves him.”

“We’re still young…” Alex admitted. “Who knows what the future will be” he muttered. “None of us can know?”

“Oh god, I wish I could see the future, and know what to do” Olivia murmured. “So, I think I’ll continue to live in the moment and divert this decision to some other time,” she sighed but knew she did have to decide, and soon…

“What do you want to do?” Alex asked.

“Mom’s going to be late. I know this patient is going to require time because she doesn’t get called to the hospital unless it’s an emergency, so how about we go and have some fun and talk later,” she smiled and led Alex upstairs to her bedroom, and slammed the door behind them as she was prepared to live in the moment, and leave the dreaded questions to another time.

*

“Where are the kids?” Michael asked as arrived at home and saw Maria walking towards him with a beer. Isabel and he had dropped off and picked up some pizza on the way back from the prison. “It’s quiet?”

“I prefer it quiet because who knows what will happen if there is mayhem” Maria sighed. “Amelia is out with friends at a movie and Alex is…” she sighed, and Michael knew the answer.

“With Olivia?” Michael wondered as if he did not know where his son was although it surprised him because he did not think Liz would let his son near her daughter if she was given the choice. “Where’s Liz?”

“Called into work,” Maria sighed. “I don’t know Michael about those two, I really don’t” she sighed. “I wish they would quit given they have bigger matters to deal with but…”

“But they want to be together,” Michael asked. “Who are we to stop them? They already have the weight of the world on them, regardless of what they choose. We have seen what happens when we try to prevent two people from being together. They have had it easier than us, until now, and there is reason why it could not continue to be an easier ride. All of the kids deserve an easier life…”

“What do we do about that other matter?” Maria muttered as she was forced to reconcile the subject that neither of them were prepared to or wanted to discuss.

“All we can do is support them, and hope they make the decision that enables them to handle the consequences of it, now and in the future” he allowed. “I am only glad we never had to deal with this kind of decision when we were their age.”

“If we had, what would you have done?” Maria murmured as she faced her husband. “I know Max dealt with it later, in a whole other manner with
Tess and then Liz, but she was married by then. If it had happened with us…”

“You could have counted on me,” Michael murmured “I would have still been with you”.

“Would you?” Maria asked. “Come on Michael. We were seesawing so wildly when we were their age. When we did sleep together, well, you had one foot off this planet?” she muttered as she wanted to remind him that he did even tell him of his leaving until after they had ended up in bed, but did not mention it.

“But I ultimately stayed, did I not?” Michael declared, of his choice to stay even before the truth about Tess was found out and it allowed Maria to smile and nodded. “I wanted you. The question is whether you would have wanted me?” Michael asked. “I know what I brought to your life back then, sure you got pregnant shortly after Liz and we made it work with twins of all things, but still…”

“I loved you when I was fifteen and I love you today. I do not regret taking our chance. Yes, getting pregnant with the twins did force our hand” Maria sighed knowing that she was indeed pregnant when they got married. Given the upheaval in their group. She and Michael had eloped with her mother and Liz as their only witnesses in the wake of Max’s trial. Isabel was off the reservation dealing with the aftermath of losing her brother. Michael and Maria hadn’t wanted to wait until Isabel showed her face, and so they found themselves a priest, and yet neither of them regretted it, or wished for a better life because they knew did see the other side of it. Of how it could have been if they had not taken their chance.

“The kids,” Michael asked as he was forced to remember the life altering drama involving their son and Olivia.

“I guess you’re right, and we’ll help them deal with it,” Maria sighed and wanted to drop it, so she moved onto topic number two. “So, what happened with Max?” she asked. “Was his overture to Isabel serious?”

“Yeah it was,” Michael acknowledged as he was forced to deal with the other matter on his mind. “I’ve got to say that it was a jolt to the system to see him again after all these years. God, it was so bizarre. Because our lives have all gone on, and he has stayed the same, except he’s also older now.”

“It should never have happened” Maria muttered because while she had conflicting feelings about Max and his choices and how they affected her best friend, well, she did know that he took the bullet for all of them, and especially her husband and that prevented downright hatred for the guy because she knew what it would have meant if the government had gotten any of them, in Michael and Isabel, or even Liz for the matter.

“Well we all agree about that,” Michael sighed. “Regardless, he is asking for help. It seems that Olivia’s visit may have made him to realize what he’s missing…”

“He should have realized that years ago,” Maria muttered as she thought of all the pressure it had put on her best friend to step up the plate and be both father and mother to their daughter. “So, what now?”

“He wants to get permission to see Liz, alone…

“Whoa,” Maria sighed. “Do you think the prison, or the court will agree to that” Maria asked. “They won’t be happy…” she asked as she envisioned a very unhappy government when they get the news. It might had stabilized over the years but still, things were not happy, and it was itching to be released once again.

“Which is why Isabel is going to see if Liz is interested in it, otherwise it might be a tough call” Michael sighed. “But prisoners are allowed the privilege, but most have to fight for it before they get it, so we’ll see…”

“About time he wanted to see Liz…” Maria sighed.

*

Isabel pulled up in front of the home that Liz and Olivia called home. She knew Max would proud of how the two were able to make this place a home, but a giant hole remained and that was that her brother could not be involved. Because he knew how much her brother and Liz loved each other, and how many arrows they got hit with, and it was a tragedy that their happy ending could not hold. So, she prayed that she could get help for her brother and bring him home to his wife and daughter.

That is if his wife wanted her husband home. Sometimes it was easier to be married on paper, instead of having the body in bed with you. Liz had spent sixteen years being a mother to Olivia alone, albeit with a lot of help along the way, and now Max wanted to come home to them, and Isabel needed to know what Liz would have to say about it.

Olivia’s visit had opened a can of worms that she prayed could be fully released. And yet she knew gaining Max’s freedom was not going to be easy. But she would not know until she took the step.

Parking her car, she got out. She did not see the car out front and knew sometimes Liz and Olivia shared the car now that Olivia was of driving age It makes me happy Maxine and Kate are too young for this stage of life.

She knocked on the door, rang the doorbell but did not get a response. “Maybe Liz had to go into work?” she wondered. “And who knows what Olivia is up to?” she asked of her niece. Still, she checked the door, and found it open.

Sighting she opened the door, “Liz, Olivia” she called out. “It’s Isabel, and I need to talk to you because it is important.”

Still nothing, Okay,” she sighed and was ready to leave and then she saw Alex’s skateboard which means he was in the house. Since he would not be leaving it at Olivia’s place and she knew he liked to use it, and the Guerin house was nearby.

“Oh damn,” Isabel muttered to herself as she walked upstairs and she knocked on her niece and goddaughter’s door before opening and then looking, and then closing it again. “I so didn’t need to see that…” she muttered to herself as she deeply sighed at her nieces’ quest to complicate her life.

The Story of My Life - Chapter 11 - 11/22/2020

Post by Parker1947 »

“You didn’t have to stay,” Olivia muttered as ten minutes she walked downstairs as she saw her aunt looking at her with an amused look on her face. “So, what, I am sixteen” she muttered as she did not particularly care for the judgement coming from her aunt. “Alex, you might as well go home now…”

“Yeah,” Alex sighted as he could only shake his head at Isabel’s obvious amusement at the development. “I’ll call tomorrow” He did not know if he rather disappointment, but amusement was unnerving. But at least it was not Olivia’s mother. So, Isabel was at least better than the alternative.

“Have a safe ride home,” Isabel muttered as she passed him his skateboard.

Alex nodded and left the house, which left Olivia alone with her aunt.

“You didn’t have to make him so weirded out,” Olivia muttered as she had seen the amusement on her aunt’s face. “What if it had been you, when you were my age?”

“I was your age once, but it was never me” Isabel sighed. “My first time was with my first husband” she muttered as she thought of her misadventure that was her marriage to Jesse. She still felt tremendously fond feelings for Jesse, and they did exchange Christmas cards but knew they were better off where they were in their lives. Jesse had relocated to Boston, and had stayed there, rising in the legal field and has since turned to politics and she had known he had remarried himself also and his now wife was the perfect political spouse. If they had stayed married, she knew that she could not be that kind of wife Jesse would have wanted especially since her family had skeletons in the closet, and not just her brother’s arrest. She had crimes herself that if they got out, then that would have been a major embarrassment for her first husband. So, they were both happy with the lives they have crafted since that marriage. She and Kyle were genuinely happy, and she did not regret the path she had carved. “But I grant you that I would not have liked it, if I had someone walk in. I knew Alex was here, because I saw his skateboard, and I knew that was bad news.”

“It’s my life,” Olivia sighed as she knew she was feeling rash and spinning.

“Olivia. Yes, it is, but you are sixteen. You are too young for what you are facing, and what you have done. You do not know what it all means” Isabel sighed. “You are caught up in how it feels, and I grant you, it feels great, if it’s the right person…”

“Yeah it does,” Olivia allowed as they all knew being an alien hybrid first generation or even the second generation. Intimacy and sex can be like a drug, and you often find it hard to resist.

“Why go there, now, when you’re still so young” Isabel sighed.

“He makes everything simple. My life is complicated, and I wish it weren’t” Olivia sighed. “He is a shoulder to lean on because he knows me, and can be there, and I don’t have to lie to him. Yet I know I we do not have the connection that my parents had with each other at my age. But I can be myself with him, even when I should know better.”

“The blessing of being young,” Isabel muttered. “Yes, I know your life hasn’t been easy. Your mother has been doing the best she can in raising you without your father,” she sighed. “We all wish it weren’t that way, but it is the life she was forced into. While you have had it easier than your parents, or we did. But you miss your Dad. And your mother has had work too much…” she sighed. “I know that was your motivation behind going to see your father…”

“I needed to meet him. To see him for myself,” Olivia asked. “I just didn’t expect to find out what I did though…?”

“I know you didn’t,” Isabel sighed. “Which is why we didn’t want to tell you everything…”

“I can’t get past that footage,” Olivia muttered as Isabel cursed the internet and the ability to post anything on Youtube. “Mom is trying to explain it away. But Dad sent Mom out of that window, and she might have died…”

“If he had not given her his green shield, at the expense of his own life. While there is no excuse for the events that came before, but he made the ultimate sacrifice Olivia. He was trying to battle back, and he was trying to fight, and he wanted your mother to kill him” Isabel said softly to Olivia’s eyes widening. “So, I gather your mother hasn’t gotten to that part of it, has she?”

“No,” Olivia shook her head. “We were left at the chapter that relates to the future version of Dad?”

“Oh that,” Isabel muttered. “I wish your mother had come to us, and maybe we could have thought of another way. She was told that he could not see his younger self. Which makes sense because you do not want to mess with the timeline, but still, he could have come to Michael or me, but instead he chose to use your mother. And Liz went with it, and made the sacrifices she did, and we were all set on a new route, that led to a lot of mayhem.”

“Did you know Kyle pretended to sleep with Mom?”

“Yeah, that came out, eventually” Isabel sighed. “Your father was hurt, and Liz found a way to hit your father where it mattered. She regrets it and shows that neither should have been on some pedestal. So, do not put either on or even me on your pedestal Olivia because none of us deserves it. We all made choices, and mistakes that we regret” she sighed. “Your father simply got caught. Otherwise we all should be in jail a long with…”

“What did you guys do to deserve all that pain?” Olivia asked.

“We survived. And we were happy. We came to this earth to survive, but we grew up and we enjoyed our lives. Our enemies did not like that. They did not like that we were normal and looked like anyone else in this world. We were to be knocked down, and to be treated as were not human. Or that is what the desired. Our enemies, human and alien had other ideas and tried to mess things up for us…”

“It doesn’t make sense for me…” Olivia asked.

“It still does not make sense to me either,” Isabel acknowledged. “I wish it could be different and that you could have had your father in your life. I know he would have been an incredible father Olivia because he loved your mother and would have done anything for her. I said neither should have been on your pedestal, but to him, she was always on his… even when she shouldn’t have been”

“He nearly killed her?” Olivia asked.

“When he was a different person, literally” Isabel murmured “I was nearly killed myself because of the people behind it. By some miracle I survived. But your father did not. He died. But by some lunacy he found himself in a madman’s body. Someone who thought your mother should be taken out so that he could take advantage of your father’s youth and vigor” she sighed. “But my brother found a way to come try to come forth and present his own memories. And most of them were of your mother, and they did not like that, and they went after your mother to prevent him from coming out, fully…”

“You know how insane that is, don’t you?” Olivia asked. “This isn’t some television show. So, why does my parent’s romance sound like something you would find in one of those shows?”

“Which is why we want you kids to be happy and have an easier life than the ones we had…” Isabel mumbled. “You shouldn’t be carrying on any of the burdens that we gave you kids”

“Look, I know everyone knows,” Olivia muttered. “All I am doing is just having fun,” she muttered. “Which is something my parents probably should have been able to have, and hell with the results” she sighed. “If only they had been allowed just to be together and enjoy themselves. Then maybe half of the hell they went through wouldn’t have happened?”

“Maybe, but we weren’t allowed to be carefree. We had secrets, and we had to blend in and still we were faced with everything that was new once your mother was shot, and your father stepped into save her.”

“Mom says you and Michael were pissed that Dad saved Mom?” Olivia asked. “Or that that he told her about you guys…”

“It was the early days. You do not know how it is to live a life when you were supposed to keep everything you are a secret. Once we came out of the pods and were adjusting to life here on Earth. It was drilled into us from our experiences with the world that we needed to be careful. To blend in and be like any other person in this town. Before you tell me that you know it feels. You do not because you and the others do not have the same worries we did when we woke up on a completely new planet. Most of the world laughed off the government theories of what your father and I were at the time of the explosions, and then of course his confession took more of the heat off. Still though you, Alex, Amelia and my own kids do not have the same worries we did…”

“Still it’s not easy,” Olivia muttered. “You guys might think we are not as defined by being special, but it is not that we do not have the same worries that you and my parents did… We do but they come at us from different perspectives, with the weight of the today’s world and one of expectations?”

Isabel knew it and hated it for the generation her niece and her own children were living in because it was still difficult to live a life that still was defined by secrecy, and not knowing who you can trust. “No, you are right, it cannot be easy for any generation compared to the one that preceded them” Isabel acknowledged. “Of course, you all also have your own worries because of your father. It will be a similar state of play I am sure when my girls are of age. Although they are a decade removed from you, Amelia, and Alex. Your mother may have given you the Parker name. But still everyone knows who you and your mother are, and while you have been largely shielded from most of it still, that is hard burden to carry especially since your father is innocent.”

“Of the base explosions,” Olivia asked. “The other thing he still did, whether he was in his right mind or not?”

“Yes, and he will have to live the rest of his life with that knowledge,” Isabel muttered. “Olivia do not think your father is not haunted by that. My brother loved your mother more than life itself, and part of the reason he confessed was that he how he knew they would have targeted your mother along with me and Michael. If the authorities had gotten a hold of her, well, she would have experienced the same hell because they poked and prodded because they would have loved to know that a human had gotten close to one of us, and we didn’t even know she was pregnant at the time with you…” she sighed. “If she were in their custody and been pregnant with you, it would have been a whole different hell. You were a result of your mother and father becoming intimate, and an expression of that love. They would have loved to monitor her, and to know what kind of person you would have turned out to be. Your father was protecting more than he knew at the time…”

“He may have loved her, but…”

“There is no buts about it, Olivia,” Isabel sighed, “Your father loved your mother, and in this incident, he was literally a different person,” Isabel insisted. “The man that did that was not in his right mind. He wanted to eliminate your mother. Your Dad broke through and pleaded with your mother to kill him, and she would have, but the bad man broke that hold, and the only way out, was the window. If there was another way, and he was prepared for himself to die, once again and lose his shot at coming back to your mother. He employed the shield for your mother. The camera’s saw it, but the stupid government called it a malfunction and edited out it for trial, and the footage that is viewable on the internet doesn’t show the shield, and anyways, he used it to help her survive. He was dead. Your mother brought him back, and he came back to her…

“That doesn’t happen. Only in movies does it happen?” Olivia muttered.

“It did happen,” Isabel sighed. “And they picked up the pieces, and got back together, you were created, and they married knowing that they were stronger, and different people than they were, but they were stronger, and the love never died”

“They married after Dad put up my brother up for adoption?” Olivia asked.

“Yes,” Isabel sighed. “Your father and Tess were an extremely complicated time. As much as it saddened him at the time, he knew the baby was better off in a home without the danger that we saw, and that was before we were sent out onto the road, to escape capture.”

“Would he have if the baby wasn’t human, completely?” Olivia asked.

“You would have to ask your father. It did help of course. To know his son would be safe, and we did not have to worry about him being out there defenseless, and not knowing what to do or how to get the support he would have needed” she sighed. “For much of that time, it was thought if he could find his son, that he might raise him, but when the time came, life was different for him in many ways.”

“Because Mom was back with him, and they were seemly stronger?”

“Your mother was there, but the decision was all your father. He wanted his son to be safe, and happy, and that was the biggest determination because Tess had brought a lot of trouble to our doorstep, and we would learn that it wasn’t completely over yet…”

“Yet Mom kept me,” Olivia asked. “I mean her husband was in prison for life. I prevented her from achieving a clean break,” she mumbled, and Isabel sighed deeply because it was obvious that learning more of her parent’s road was confusing for the girl, and Isabel could see this, and coupled this with her own situation, it was a hell of a time for her niece.

“You mother loves your father, and she chose the life she took on” Isabel sighed. “She doesn’t regret it. She only regrets that she wasn’t able to share these years with her father, and she would have wanted to share that life with him if fate had worked any other way.”

“If only she had not listened to the future version of Dad?” Olivia asked.

“We don’t know what would have happened if she had chosen not to go along with that mission,” Isabel sighed. “As much as we might long to be able to. One cannot go back and change our past decisions. Otherwise if we could, it only then leads to a whole new minefield and even more drastic choices than the original ones would have taken us.”

“This future version of Dad did…” Olivia muttered. “He came back in time and made life a hell of lot worse for all of us?”

“Oh Olivia, I wish we could do the same” Isabel sighed. “But we can’t. We must make our decisions based on what is best for us, and only us. The same can be said for you,” she sighed. “You shouldn’t feel pressure one way or another for this decision you have to make.”

“I am special…” Olivia asked as it was a curse she felt, and in some ways it, it is a damn curse. Why can’t I be normal?

“Yes, you are,” Isabel murmured. “Alex is too, but just like my brother, you might have a child that is special, or you could have a child who does not have gifts” she sighed. “It’s a total crapshoot. Everyone is different. Genetics plays funny games within families and in people”

“But sometimes you do not know until they are older, if they are indeed special. Which is why I do not see how Dad could have known his if his son was completely human. Tess was apparently a lying machine. She lied and betrayed you constantly, and about a whole bunch of matters, so why wouldn’t she lie about that?”

“She had no reason to lie about that. It was the reason she came back.” Isabel sighed. “She did seem to care about her son.”

“According to her,” Olivia asked. “How do we know?”

“We, don’t,” came a voice and they whipped around and saw Liz who had walked into the house and found her daughter in a very vocal and passionate talk with her aunt. “But your father made the decision based on what he knew, and he felt from the baby because they do have ways of knowing whether they are human or special, right Isabel?”

“Right,” Isabel sighed as she remembered at the time of his engagement to Jesse. Michael did a very routine way of finding out, and then they were known to be able to go through dreams, but with a baby, those ways were minimal. “Your father did have a way of knowing,” he sighed. “His son wasn’t an alien?”

“But then Mom has powers, and she’s human?” Olivia asked. “Whose to say this mystery brother of mine could not classify himself as human to anyone in this country and yet have powers?”

Isabel and Liz looked at each other and wanted to curse because the girl was too bright and voicing reasonable theories. Theories that rattled both women. Olivia muttered something to herself before she finally said, “I am sick of this. I need a break. I am going upstairs” she muttered as she walked off, leaving Liz and Isabel alone.

“I am sorry about that,” Liz sighed. “She’s very temperamental right now, for obvious reasons and for the fact she’s a teenager” she sighed. “I don’t know how my parents did it, and even then, they were extremely worried when I did become a teenage and found you guys. Little did I know what I was getting into, which is why my parents laugh at me and they only know half of it”

“I know,” Isabel sighed as she hated how they were seeing a model of how one could be a teenager in this age in Olivia, Alex and Amelia, and she didn’t relish when her own girls got to this age At least I have years to go, but how will the world be when they do become of age? she mused to herself. “We didn’t hear you come in?” she asked. “Where were you?”

“Work beckoned,” Liz muttered. “But it cleared it up sooner than I feared, and I was able to come home. What are you doing here?”

“I needed to talk to you,” Isabel asked.

“Why?” Liz asked of her sister-in-law and knew it was a very weird life they were leading. She was married to Isabel’s brother, and yet had not been able to see her husband for nearly seventeen years. So, it led to awkward situations between Liz and Max’s family, and that included Isabel. Olivia had better relations with the Evans family.

“Max…” Isabel said simply, and the room turned into a spin for Liz.

*

“Max wants to see you,” came the words for a second time in the next ten minutes as the world began to clear for Liz as she felt like she was a in trance or a bubble and that bubble burst. “What?” she murmured softly as Isabel did not relish the world Liz was now facing. “What did you say?”

“My brother wants to see you?” Isabel murmured.

“How, why?” Liz said softly and then she looked upstairs and thought of her daughter. Olivia woke up a lot of things, didn’t she? She asked herself.
“How come he’s asking through you?” she asked. “Why not his lawyer?”

“I am his lawyer,” Isabel said softly as Liz’s world spun again as seventeen years suddenly returned to torture the woman she was today. She would never live down the past or want to part it, because then that would erase Max from my life, and I will never do that. “The details haven’t been worked out yet nor has the paperwork been filed, but that that is just a formality at this point and I expect it to start when I head into work in the morning, but I will be on record as his lawyer…”

“I don’t get, why now?” Liz asked as her head continued to spin. Why does Max want back in our lives, now?

“Olivia,” Isabel said as they both looked upstairs as the they heard the music blaring from her room. God awful rock music they both muttered. Not the soothing stuff from earlier decades, but modern rock, and mixed in with rap. Kids today, their music tastes suck.

“What does he want?” Liz asked as if she had not heard Isabel’s earlier words. “I don’t get it…”

“He wants to see you,” Isabel murmured again. “I know what this means for you…”

“No, you don’t,” Liz asked. “It’s been nearly seventeen years Isabel. My whole daughter’s lifetime and he hasn’t reached out and now because she went and saw him, he sees fit to want to see me as if he wants to lecture me for keeping her a secret?”

“Liz, he doesn’t blame you” Isabel sighed. “He knows you were doing what he asked. Staying away, and he knows you were trying to protect your daughter. But he does have questions and what can I say, it is like Olivia woke up the world to him again, and he wants to try again…”

“Why couldn’t he try back then, or fight for his own life, or to be with me?” Liz said muttering because as much as she defended man to their daughter, still she was hurt to know he had kept her away, all this time. “I love him. I gave him everything, and he kept me away, and now because our daughter busts his world, he wants to see me?”

“Yes, unfortunately it did take this to get him to engage again” Isabel sighed. “I know you want to scream, and maybe take this opportunity to do that if you were to see him…”

“Then why are you here? You could have called or set it up, and let me know…” Liz sighed as she thought of the man she loved, and the man she did almost anything for, and who had to live in the darkness alone, all these years.

“He doesn’t just want any visit,” Isabel murmured. “He doesn’t want it through the glass, Liz”

“Then what does he want?” Liz asked.

“He wants to see you in person, and alone” Isabel murmured.

“Wait, what?” Liz asked as if she never considered the possibility or the idea. “You mean I could possibility see him alone, and not through glass or anything?”

“Yeah, they give prisoners, especially those who are married and in committed relationships the ability to see and interact with their partner. A guard will always be outside the room, but you can get a over night pass?”

“All this time,” Liz whispered. You mean I could touch him, and hold him, if we so wish she longed to say but did not, but Isabel could almost guess what her brother’s wife wanted to say.

“Yeah,” Isabel acknowledged. “But to get the permission, we have to go through the prison and maybe to court.”

“Why?” Liz asked.

“They might say no at giving him permission to interact with you, because one of his convicted crimes, was regarding you…”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Give me your permission to go down this path for both you and my brother. To succeed and get what Max wants. I might need your assistance in convincing the prison and maybe a court to allow you access to him,” Isabel asked. “So, I’ve got to ask, do you want to see my brother?” she asked before adding

“Alone?”

The Story of My Life - Chapter 12 - 11/25/2020

Post by Parker1947 »

“Do I?” Liz asked herself the next morning as she was placing the plate of food in front of both of her and her daughter. She and Olivia had not talked since the night before when Isabel went home. She had promised answer today because as Isabel indicated, any process needed to get going as soon as possible and it had been a sleepless night when she had gone upstairs and found her daughter’s room dark. Opening it up, she was comforted to see that yes, her daughter was sleeping in bed.

Now it was a new day, and both were preoccupied. More and more Olivia could not help but think about her own situation, and on the other hand her mother was thinking about whether she wanted to see her husband. A husband she had been separated from for too many years, and someone who she could not get out of her mind, especially not today, sixteen years after they had laid eyes on each other.

Do I want to see Max she asked herself? After nearly seventeen years she muttered to herself. It would be so easy, to say No…

It would she told herself as she had spent these years raising Olivia and being married in name only, and on paper. She may have put on her engagement ring, and for many years had not worn any ring due to her career as a doctor. When she was training it made the most sense. Saying she was married was an easy way to turn down the guys who did ask her out, or at least the ones who weren’t scared off by her being a single mother, which had been such a part of her identity away from Max.

Still she had never wanted to date. She only dreamt of one man in her bed, and that was her husband. She had only wanted Max in her bed, and yet she knew she could not have him. That made the dreams even more memorable and just like Max in his prison cell, they had some passionate connections. Given she was married to an alien, she swore occasionally it felt like she really had him in his arms I guess anything was possible given the nature of her powers, and the almost mystical connection they had shared.

Still she rather would have him in her bed, and in her arms here in reality and not only in her dreams.

So, instead of having a husband who was with her as she raised their daughter, she instead woke up alone, and now she was being ask to bust the bubble of the life she had crafted by getting the chance to see her husband. “You don’t have school today?” she said as she reached for something to think about, anything at all so that she did not think about her husband. As she saw the brunette staring at her, who was so much like her husband that it made her miss her husband. Knowledge that Max wanted to see her made her crazy, and she did not know what to do with that insanity.

“Teacher’s conference or something,” Olivia muttered as she sounded far away, to her mother, and Liz supposed that was only right given what was going on with her daughter. “You have to work?”

“Yes,” Liz nodded. “It’s also going to be late, so, are you going to be okay here home alone?”

“It’s not like I haven’t done this before,” Oliva muttered. “I’ll probably hook up with Alex… and Amelia” she quickly said as her mother gave her a stern look as if her aunt had told her about what she had interrupted. Isabel had indeed told Liz and Liz had not been all that surprised. Because she had known her career had made her daughter to be self-sufficient, to a fault, and that independence led to reckless behavior.

But you were not that much older when you almost went there with her father, she told herself. So, could she punish her daughter for something she almost did, and if Maria had not busted them, they might have gone all the way.

But she had not, and her daughter had.

“You don’t have to worry about me,” Olivia said softly as if she knew what her mother was thinking about…

“Well I do,” Liz said before sitting down in her front of her own plate of food. “You’re only young once” and she said. “You don’t want to mess up your chances of a future” she asked. “Decisions you make at sixteen can follow you…”

“I can still have a future regardless of what might happen,” Olivia sighed as she had debated long and hard with herself the night before on her choices, and she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. She never saw herself as being one for any of the choices, except she did see her as a parent one day, but not at sixteen.

“No matter what you do, I’ll support you the whole way” Liz murmured. “I hope you know you don’t have to make this decision all by yourself?”

“Alex says he will support me, whatever I decide.”

“I am glad, but you both are still very young” Liz admitted. “I might have been young when I had you, but I had gone through so much during that time…’ she sighed. Those years before I became pregnant and doing it alone were more than most people in a lifetime experience.

“But you kept me?” Olivia asked. “Why?”

“As I said, I love your father. It never occurred me not to. Maybe because you were last link to your father. By having you, and loving you, you were a memory of my time with him, and how we were fortunate to have that chance to be together, and if our fates had been different than he would have been with me…”

“I see…” Olivia murmured.

“I know all you can see when you hear your father’s name is what the footage shows. But your father was a kind and gentle soul. It tortured him to hurt anyone. He never did it willingly unless his hand was forced. You are a lot like him. You look like me, but you do have a lot of your father in you, and it’s not only because of your gifts.”

“I don’t know what to do?” Olivia admitted.

“Maybe take today and think about it. Think about what kind of life you want. Think next year, five or ten years from now, will you have any regrets of the choice you make? You will need to be able to live with it, and yourself.”

“Life was hard for you by having me, when you were barely older than me now?” Olivia asked. “If were to keep it, I am putting a lot of pressure on this family?”

“It was hard. I am not going to say it was not. Your grandparents on both sides were a big help otherwise I do not know what I would have done if I had not had them. Still it is not a life that everyone should want. I was committed to your father, and we were married, and we would have been raising you together, if we had that opportunity. You need to be committed to whatever your life will throw at you. Alex is here now, but he might not be here tomorrow. As much as he might say he supports you, and idea that you both have a love for each other, but things might be different when you graduate, and go off to university. Whose to say he will stick around? Or you might go somewhere, regardless of whatever you decide to. By then you will be able to handle anything. Alex is an important consideration but he’s not the only one” she sighed. “And do not make any decisions because it would be hard for us, because you need to be comfortable with it, because this is your life, and your future. You will have to live with whatever decision you make. But know that I will be there every way I can, and if you do choose to go through with it, then I will support you, and we will make it work. It is not like we are poor. Of course, it will be a challenge, but we have made it through to get today, and the future can only be more of the same.”

Olivia nodded.

“You do have a future regardless of whatever you choose to do,” she sighed. “You are strong. You are the best combination of a Parker and yes, an Evans, and there is no way you won’t make it through, whatever the future is, and in the meantime, I’ll be here for you, okay?” Liz murmured as she concentrated on her daughter. “You have an incredible support system with more people than you can count on your hand to be able to be there for you, whatever you decide, okay, so don’t let it stress you out…”

“Thanks Mom,” Olivia sighed as she got up and walked off to get dressed.

And seeing her daughter so overwhelmed, well, it made Liz’s decision for her, as she dialed a number and left a message on Isabel’s work phone, “My answer is yes. Do whatever you have to do. Because I need to see Max…” she said before hanging up, as she went herself to get changed for work.

Knowing full well her life was completely different than it was a week before…

*

“What do you think?” Isabel asked as she sat in her father-in-law’s office as Liz was leaving a message for her sister-in-law. Jim was town Sheriff after claiming the job from Hanson after mere weeks as Hanson had gone off to a new city, and they asked Jim to take over the job again, and he had accepted because it had been his dream job, and he was made for the work, and fortunately most weeks, it was pretty quiet as nothing had come up to rival what Max’s case had brought to this town, and therefore the job most days was quiet, and he liked it that way. He had smiled when he saw his daughter-in-law come into his office. He relished his life with his wife, Amy Deluca. Who he had persuaded to marry him in the wake of their children departing town and now that Kyle was happily married to Isabel and parents to two girls, and it gave his family purpose to be able to spoil his granddaughters? Along with Michael and Maria’s twins, the family was robust and happy.

That is until he got a reminder of a family that was not happy and had to make do with the worst of what life can bring you. Of course, he knew that Liz had be able to make something of herself, but she had to do it the hard way and yet Olivia had been raised to be smart, and independent but knew because she was dating his grandson, that life these days run fast than when his son was in high school.

Now he was being reminded by his daughter-in-law of the case that was indeed personal for Isabel. As if he didn’t need the reminder of how he had to watch as Max confessed to a crime that had been committed by a girl who was as close to family for a year as someone could be, in that Tess Harding had committed the despicable crime. She had betrayed the group, and no two people as badly as she had with Jim and Kyle. Using Kyle as an unwilling and unknowing accomplice in the Alex Whitman’s death.

More proof that almost everyone had blood on their hands. And they had been damn lucky that they could close Alex’s death as an accident, when they knew it was more than an accident. It had been murder, because Tess had pushed Alex to far, and played with his mind until he could not handle it anymore… and he had cracked.

He had closed the file and told the Whitman family that their son’s death had been ruled an accident. Because it is not like they could put Tess on trial. Plus, she had disappeared anyways, with Max’s son, and he had felt an accidental classification would have the least heartache for a family who was feeling too much as no one should bury a child. With Tess gone, it had been mostly out of their faces until she elected to return, and in the process had ended up taking everyone down with her and forced the gang onto the road.

Because his own future was murky due to financial constraints, his son had gone with them because he had been listless in his life and because Jim had been without a job and singing wasn’t going to send his son to university and the alien invasion had lessened Kyle’s enthusiasm for sports, so a scholarship was out of the question and so unless Kyle worked more than he went to class, he wouldn’t be able to cover the tuition unless he waited, and so Jim didn’t blame his son for choosing to vanish with his friends

And then of course when things went south with Max and Liz, and the gang returned to town. By that time, Jim had gotten a job as Deputy as he worked his way back to his former job, but therefore it allowed money to give his son some freedom to start taking classes. Working also allowed Kyle to handle the rest, and he finally graduated with a degree in teaching, but when the children did eventually come, he and Isabel decided that he would stay home until the kids were school age.

It might have looked strange, but he knew his son loved his daughters, and enjoyed being there for the girls, but with Kate entering school soon. Jim knew his son was looking at getting back into the teaching field, to give himself something to do during the day because money was not the issue with Isabel’s position.

“Are you serious?” Jim asked as he glanced up at his daughter-in-law as his mind snapped back to reality, a reality that was completely different than that of most of the citizens in his fair town “Max has reached out?”

“Yeah,” Isabel asked. “What do you think the system is going to do?”

“They won’t like it,” Jim allowed. “Personally, I don’t care,” he sighed as he hated that part of the system. Putting away innocent people. “Because I do think Liz should be allowed to see her husband and because of course, I know the true circumstances of the case, but I do know they won’t like it” he muttered. “And they will try anything possible to prevent him from taking steps to improve his situation…”

“I want him to fight. We all know he should not have been in there. He only confessed to prevent much worse from happening” Isabel muttered. “If only…”

If only is great, but it does not stop life from happening Jim muttered to himself as he knew how much his daughter-in-law missed her brother and wanted him back in her life. “You and I both know it,” Jim said. “But to the government, they see him as the perfect sacrificial lamb because they were not stupid enough to think he did it, but because Tess was no longer a factor. She’s dead, and her body was later identified” he sighed of the turn coat that had lived in his home. “Still they needed someone to go down, and they won’t like if he is looking to get out.”

“He’s innocent” Isabel asked.

“Which is why it’s important for them that they found the evidence of Max’s actions in Vermont. It made it a federal crime because he operated over state lines, and the footage wasn’t good for him.”

“They doctored the video,” Isabel muttered. “They wiped out the evidence of the green shield. Which is why Liz survived?”

“Still it was Max on the tape. Who he was in his mind is a completely different issue, and the government was never going to believe that…” Jim sighed “Even if they had not edited the video? The media was going to discount it as a glitch, and to everyone, well, they had their man and to everyone, it was going to look that he was dangerous, and they have him locked up, and they won’t take it kindly to have their depiction of the events challenged,” Jim murmured. “Even if we have the truth on our side. Plus, because Liz would not testify, and the media know that she had tried to get the police to not charge Max, and so made her look like she wanted to stay. And staying married allowed her a shield, and it make it look like he needed something to help him…”

“I want him home…” Isabel muttered.

“We all do,” Jim sighed. “But you’re going to have to come up with some proof that pins it on Tess, or another fall guy” he muttered softly so that none of his guys heard that the Sheriff was basically suggesting implicating someone else. Still the chances of that were small so they needed something to nail it to a dead woman that was Tess.

“I know” Isabel muttered. “But for now, I will take anything that will allow me to give my brother what he desperately wants. To see Liz…”

“I will do what I can,” Jim sighed. “But you might have to go to court to get the agreement. They don’t want to be as seen as allowing it.”

“Which is what I will do,” Isabel sighed. “Thanks for helping”

“No problem,” Jim sighed. “Tell the girls I am looking forward to taking them fishing next weekend because I know they have their big concert this weekend”

“They can’t wait,” Isabel laughed as he looked as she left his office. Going to his phone, he made a call. “I don’t care. You knew he was innocent. You still railroaded him into a conviction. Do you want me to take this to the media? They look at it badly these days if someone was railroaded into prison. You should do something about it” he muttered. “So, you might want to help him see his wife” he allowed. “She didn’t want those charges. She stayed married, and therefore she’s due”

“Who is due something?” came a voice.

Jim looked up and saw Liz… “Hey…” he sighed as he could sense the tension on her face. Life hadn’t been easy for her and while he didn’t know what had happened still from his wife, he had been told something was going down between Alex and Olivia, and he could sense it was taking a toll on her mother. “I didn’t expect to see you?”

“Hey, yourself” Liz murmured as she come here on a lark as she was on a break from the office, and she had found her drifting towards the department. “I guess I needed your advice?”

“You just missed Isabel,” Jim asked as he got up and went to close the door behind his newest guest.

“I know, I saw her when I was coming in” Liz sighed as she thought of the reason why she had taken this chance and come to the station. “I guess I wanted to ask if there is any way to be able to see Max…”

“Isabel tells me that she plans to get you access…” Jim asked as she was reminded once more what a raw deal Liz had gotten in her choice of who she loved, and how she hadn’t been able to achieve happiness.

“I don’t want to wait Jim. I need him now” Liz sighed. “I want to see him as soon as possible because I don’t want to wait until she gets approval from the prison, which we know they won’t like and will fight and therefore going through court will eat up time. Olivia reached out to him; did you know that?”

“I heard rumors,” Jim admitted as he heard from the prison that people were coming out of the woodwork in visiting Max. As Sheriff he officially had to stay out of it because it was not his jurisdiction anymore. Max’s case had turned into a federal one, which made it worse for him but still he used his connections and checked in every couple of months, to make sure that Max was safe, and stayed safe. After all, he knew Max could take care of himself, but he had to be careful, and that could lead to the circumstances that would have been better to avoid. “How did she react to it?”

“She was doing fine until someone there happen to open to her eyes to the full extent of her father’s charges” Liz admitted as she groaned at the perception of the events and how the town thought of those circumstances. “She’s known about the main one since she could understand the implications, but she didn’t know all of it.”

“Oh,” Jim sighed. “Vermont?”

“Yeah?” Liz asked as she cursed her time at boarding school. She still got cards from Eileen after they had connected years later via Facebook and on social media, and they emailed every once in awhile as Eileen never could understand how Liz or the Beth she had known at school’s dead bad boy boyfriend who had broken the relationship code and been with someone else could end up being alive, and then in prison. Liz only explained with her best lying qualities that they had screwed up and gotten it wrong. “I have been trying to tell her about that time. You know the whole mess?”

“Right,” Jim acknowledged as he knew it did quality as a mess. “That can’t be easy to communicate to her?”

“It’s not,” Liz sighed. “Some of the memories I like remembering but most of it was rocky, or beyond, and living through that again as I try to get her to stop thinking her father as a monster therefore it hasn’t been the easiest of times.”

“I can’t imagine,” Jim nodded.

“Which is why I need to see him. I am sure he’s torturing himself because he cut himself off from us, and I didn’t tell him…”

“He has to know you were protecting both him, and Olivia?” Jim asked.

“I am sure he does, and it was his decision to cut off contact so I would have told him if he had only allowed me the opportunity. He didn’t want me to be waiting…” Liz sighed.

“And yet here you are, waiting…”

“I am not waiting per se,” Liz sighed. “I have been busy, with my career and with my daughter. Still, I knew he was never going to get out unless he made a run for it because the charges were too serious and yet I couldn’t move on…”

“No one would have blamed you if you had moved on…” Jim asked.

“No, but for reason, I couldn’t” Liz sighed I was taken the moment Max saved my life. No one else could have matched what he gave to me, despite the pain that also had come with it she mused. “Which is why I need to see him. As much as I want to wait until Isabel gets permission, and yet I have this need to do it as soon as possible because I know every hurdle will be placed in front of me if they become aware of what I desire. So, do you think it’s wise for me to go now?”

“At the end of the day, it’s up to you” Jim sighed. “But going to a prison isn’t easy Liz. It is not the same thing as coming here to my station and visiting him when I was holding him. Going to a prison is dangerous, and it will make it even more real…”

“I have had to live all these years without him being here with me and our daughter” Liz moaned. “That fact alone already makes it real.”

“But seeing him in there, it will really make it real” Jim warned because he had seen it too many times with those people that he had sent prison. Whose families always took it hard when they had to face the fact their love one was behind bars, and that they were not coming home. A reality that had been kept from Liz all these years due to Max’s wishes. So, to take such a step was going to be a nasty wakeup call. “Until then you have imagined any place he might be and just like I am sure Olivia did while she grew up. You could imagine that he was just unable to come home due to circumstances. Seeing him there will make it real that unless he gets a miracle, he’s still unable to come home to you and Olivia, and you will be going home alone.”

“Yeah,” Liz sighed to herself because Jim had it right. All these years while logically she knew where her husband was, and why he was unable to be with her and Olivia still it was easier to dream that he was in some far away land saving lives, and not behind cement walls because he had been accused of taking lives. And while he was innocent of what ultimately convicted him, still he had blood on his hands from other acts that they didn’t even know about… Maris’s death had to this day been unsolved, and thankfully hadn’t been linked to the fact Max was on the grounds that day, and stands accused of trying to kill Liz. A broken neck was different than a struggle and flight out of a window.

“I understand why you want to do it. But really think about it before you do it?” Jim asked. “It will change your outlook.”

“I have to risk that,” Liz murmured as she thought of their daughter and the fact she was growing up without her father. “For Olivia, and for my own sake. I need to see him. Can you help me?”

“Okay, sit here and I’ll be back shortly” Jim said softly as he left his office as Liz was mired in memories.

Max meanwhile was doing push ups in his prison cell. He been outside in the yard for some fresh air, but his mind was not on the beautiful day it was outside but on two people he wanted to know, and how he missed his wife. Liz was now on a loop in his brains, and memories good and bad were filling his brain. He had spent time earlier in the computer lab and had caught up on what he had missed out, and now he was back in his cell and wishing he were home.

And out of this place. But there was not going to be any chance of that… He emailed his sister and arranged a special gift to be delivered to his wife.

Meanwhile Olivia was needing to get out of the house and stop thinking so because Alex was busy with friends. They had plans to see a movie that night, but Olivia called up Amelia and they made plans to go shopping. Liz’s birthday was coming up, and her mother deserved something special. So, she and Amelia found themselves at Maria’s store Glitter. A store that Maria had taken over from her mother and one that she had made into her own, a business that had thrived through some tough economies for the town. She offered classes for the kids interested in crafts, and she even taught older kids interested in more complicated crafts. It was a life she had never imagined when she dreamt of showbusiness but life had led her here and she didn’t regret it for a minute even if it was a easier road than most and she wished her son and Olivia didn’t have a more strenuous one because it had been easier for her and Michael. She wanted to believe Liz and Max had used up god’s need for angst, and drama, and he would leave out the younger generation.

Maria saw her daughter and Olivia come in. Smiling, she stepped away from the cash register and asked Heidi to take over. “Hey girls, what are you doing here?”

“Something constructive,” Olivia laughed as she browsed “With no school today, I wanted to look for something for Mom?”

“Cool,” Maria sighed as she was aware that her best friend’s birthday was coming up. “Where is your brother?” she asked Amelia of Alex.

“With Dave and Tim doing something,” Amelia snorted. “New inventory, huh?” she asked of the new stock she had seen on the shelves.

“You will find something,” Maria assured the girls as they often came in and went on a spree of shopping “And you, don’t use up all your allowance, okay?”

“What makes you think I haven’t used it already on other goodies, or on-line sales” Amelia laughed. “Seriously Mom, I am much better with my money than Alex is. It’s Olivia who is looking mostly, but who knows, I might find something?”

“Okay,” Maria sighed as she could see the distraction look on her goddaughter. “Oh, and before you leave Olivia, I have a package for your mother that Isabel arranged for her, and I was supposed to ship it but since you’re here, can you save it for her birthday?”

“I would love to,” Olivia asked. “Do you know what it is?”

“Yes,” Maria sighed because she had known the special arrangements assigned to the gift. “I think your mother will be happy to get it” as she couldn’t help but wonder why the gods pick now to open and remind her friend of her past, when there was very little they could do to get Max and Liz back together unless someone was able to find evidence that would get Max to come home again.

Why get anyone hopes up if nothing changes? Maria asked herself.

“Did my father arrange for it?” Olivia asked, as if she could read Maria’s mind and maybe she could Maria mused.

“How could he have done that?” Maria asked.

“We can do almost anything…” Olivia asked. “Why is it now that suddenly Dad’s coming back into the picture?”

“It is almost like the gods are trying to tell us something,” Maria muttered. “Or trying to give something to us at the same time” she muttered as Amelia gravitated to the craft part of the store which left Olivia with Maria.

“Can I ask,” Olivia asked. “You were there. Did my father really sacrifice everything for my Mom?”

I'm getting very anxious for Liz to see Max again. Can we please speed it up??
Olivia is a combination of both parents and that is good.
How are we going to find proof that Tess was behind everything???
Thank goodness the Sheriff is there to help.
Olivia finally realizes Max sacrificed himself for Liz.....

The Story of My Life - Chapter 13 - 11/28/2020

Post by Parker1947 »

“Yes,” Maria said simply as they stood in the backroom of the shop as she had a trusted employee take over while she dealt with her daughter and Olivia. Or it was more like she stood, and Olivia and Amelia sat at the little table. She had known this day was coming where the kids would start to question the stories, they had told them as they grew up. Thankfully, Maxine and Kate were too small to look at the stories and ask for the true details. When what they really did tell them were puffed up romantic stories, glossing over the true dangers.

The fact they were forced to flee from true danger. Olivia seeking out her father had opened a pandora box of truths, and she knew it was coming back to haunt them. “Simply yes, because I have never seen two people more in love than the way your father loved your mother. Not even my own Space boy and me could rival what your parents had together, and how heart-breaking it was for those days to be cut short.”

“Really Mom?” Amelia asked as Olivia looked at Maria with wariness in her eyes.

“Yes,” Maria nodded as she saw the surprise in Amelia’s face “I love my Space boy, and he took my heart when I was fifteen. I could have walked away, and I did, but in the end, I returned because I loved him too much not go down this road with him, and fortunately I got lucky and despite that luck. Yes, we all made sacrifices. But no one faced as much hardship in such a short time than what your parents faced together Olivia,” she sighed.

“And yes, your father did love your mother more than anything. Unfortunately, circumstance cut them short, otherwise they would have been incredibly happy together…”

“I don’t know if anyone could love someone that much” Olivia muttered out loud because while she knew she loved Alex. Still, she was sixteen and they had gravitated into a relationship, and she did not think she could ever truly experience as something as deep as what she was told her parents felt for each other. She might never have physically seen her parents together. But seeing her mother and knowing she was pinning for a man she had not physically been able to have for more than sixteen years. Who wants that kind of love when you are utterly lost if you do not have the other person? While most days she prayed that she would be able to one day. Maybe it was going to be Alex, or it might be someone else or maybe that kind of love was something she would never be able to achieve. The mere concept was foreign to her even if she wished she had been able to watch it.

“Trust me, you can” Maria smiled. “Your father would have died for your mother, and he did…” she mused. “Not to say it was not an intense time as it was, and both of your parents made choices they would come to regret, and neither are saints nor should be treated as such,” she sighed of their actions once upon a time. “None of us are, as your own father told you the other night Amelia. Max, Michael, and Isabel did things that at least two of them are incredibly lucky that they did not caught. Max did, and he will always be haunted by it because he did love your mother Olivia.”

“I keep hearing that, but I still can’t grasp it” Olivia mumbled at shear thought of such devotion, and that kind of love. If only she had been able to witness it?

“We should have talked about it more than we did. Amelia and Alex are lucky to have their family intact. You and your mother didn’t get as fortunate, and I am sorry about that” Maria murmured. “It might be funny to hear but your father did die to protect your mother.”

“He’s the reason she went out that window?” Olivia batted back.

“Yes, but he was a different person” Maria sighed as she remembered the encounter. “I wasn’t there for it, because I was slightly unconscious,” she sighed as Olivia cringed. “I didn’t know what was happening except that your father looked like his normal self, but coming after me, and acting the way he did, well, I knew something was odd.”

“You thought he was dead?” Olivia asked.

“Yes, your mother was going through hard time dealing with what your father had done with Tess Harding, and while they ended up getting together. They were not over it, and events happened to put even more pressure on them until she was finally breaking down. At the same time, I was having my own crisis as I dealt with everything that we had done since that shooting in your grandparent’s restaurant when we were fifteen, in September 1999. The stress was becoming to much, and at the time, she was starting to manifest her powers.”

“She got them because Dad healed her, right?” Olivia asked.

“Yes,” Maria muttered. “A side effect no one can explain because Kyle is the same guy he always has been, and it’s only your mother that has that pleasure. Jim doesn’t…”

“Wait, what does Grandpa have to do with this?” Amelia asked appalled as she thought of her grandfather. Amy’s marriage to Jim years before had made them all family, and to the girls, Jim was their grandfather. “Did Max hurt Grandpa?”

“No, of course not” Maria shook her head “I know I am confusing you. But your grandfather is alive because of Olivia’s father. He used his powers like he did with Kyle and saved his life. But like Kyle, he’s completely normal.”

“The stories we got told were really puffed up, weren’t they?” Olivia demanded.

“Yes,” Maria admitted. “I was there that day when your mother got saved Olivia. He jumped in when anyone else might have walked away because of the potential of exposure. He did not know what he was opening but before that day, I could see how your father was pining for your mother. Wanting to know her. Your mother noticed, but your father was too good at blending in, and acting like any normal teenager. The shooting changed all that. It forced us into a world that even your father did not know how to handle it. Each day was a new discovery.”

“You met Dad because of this?” Amelia asked.

“Yes, and Alex’s namesake came into the world with us; Alex Whitman and unfortunately he paid the price which is why we have always been wary with what we told you because we knew the dangers out there. From then on, we worried about who came into the secret. Which is why Max did not want his parents to know. Unfortunately, circumstance brought it all to a head, and that is why we were forced out onto the road until they caught up and Max sacrificed himself for Liz, and for his sister and Michael.”

Olivia nodded. “But Grandma and Grandpa know the truth. So do my grandparents Parkers. How did they find out the truth?”

“Your mother’s diary. She sent it to your Grandfather Parker, and he was forced to read the heartbreaking details through the pages of the diary and only days later, the government caught up to us, and we were forced to come back and face the music in numerous ways. Jeff and Nancy then learned of events that had not been depicted in the diary, and your other grandparents they learned the truth not that much before everything went down. It was a mess. We came back to a whole new world in terms of our families, and what they knew. Fortunately, before we did come home. We got lucky numerous times, but it all led to Max having to make a choice. Either they catch everyone, or he give himself up, and try to stop them from taking all of us…”

“Mom says Dad was kidnapped himself and that colored his perception of what they would have done if he hadn’t confessed?” Olivia asked.

“Yes,” Maria said shaking at the memories. “Your mother helped save your father, and that was the end of the carefree period of their romance. From then on, it was a very rocky road, and they almost didn’t come out of that tunnel.”

“They had a carefree period?” Olivia asked.

“Yes,” Maria smiled. “But it soon got too serious, and they never got a happy ending that lasted. Fortunately, you were a bright light that came before the rainbow dissolved itself.”

“Maybe Mom would have been happier to not have any memories that linked her to Dad” Olivia asked. “Because I only bring dark memories for her?”

“Oh, Olivia no you don’t,” Maria sighed at the burden the girl felt by not having a father and having an unorthodox life with her mother. “I happen to think having you was a saving grace for her. Because if she did not have you and have that link to Max that went past her abilities then I am not sure if she could have made it those first months after she lost your father. It gave her something to concentrate on. I was there your father died. Before she knew he lived on in another form. Your mother was a downright mess. She was drinking. I for a moment was afraid of what she might do while under the influence. She was that defeated,” she sighed, and Olivia looked surprised. “Actually, she was passed out drunk when she thought she saw your father for the first time since his death?”

“Are you sure this is not some movie plot?” Amelia asked as she glanced at her friend and her mother with the same wariness that Olivia felt as she had heard from numerous people about how bizarre her parent’s romance had turned out to be…

“I said that too,” Olivia asked.

“No, it’s not. It was very real. Before this, as I said, I was truly afraid for her because I was afraid that she might be going over the edge. Until that point, I had never seen someone so devastated and it was like she had lost the only one that made sense, and life became meaningless for her. She had gone to the boarding school because everything with your father had become to get too overwhelming, and she was starting to manifest her special gifts. She needed time to be normal. But she found she had been changed by loving your father and immediately upon his death, she knew. They had such a bond where the moment he left this earth, she knew… I did not even believe that she could feel it but calling your father Amelia. I discovered that yes, your father had died. I was wrong yet Liz instinctually knew. It was that powerful.”

“How did he die?” Amelia asked.

“He was being forced to heal a mad man,” came a voice and they all turned and saw that Liz had entered the room and overheard them, as flashes of memories was going through her. “I didn’t see you at home, but I thought I would come and pick you up?”

“Why aren’t you at work?”

“I have another doctor covering for me,” Liz sighed as because she the last thing she should be trying to be a healing influence for her patients. “I wanted to make a trip, and I figured you would want to come with me?”

“Where are we going?” Olivia asked oddly. Maybe Maria is right. Maybe Mom is a mess without Dad. she mused to herself. I have never seen her this out of sorts. She never left her practice for anything, and not even knowing what she knows about me had made her this out of sorts. Is it because of Dad

“To see your father…” Liz said as she looked at Maria who nodded.

“Whoa…” Olivia murmured.

“So, do you want to come with me?” Liz asked

“Evans you are becoming quite the star prisoner these days. Suddenly you are awash of visitors,” came the guard as Max who was sitting on his bed starring at the printout of his sister and Kyle’s wedding, and the vision that Liz in her dress. It was a black and white picture, but I bet she looked gorgeous he said torturing himself over the past he thought he had long put to the bed because he had to. Somehow, he had to learn to live in this place. And thinking of his wife out there in the world had not done him a world of good in those early days. So, he started to compartmentalize and try to put her past him, so that he could survive. But now that work was all lost and it was Liz all the time in his brain.

“Whose here, is it my lawyer?” Max asked, not expecting Isabel to be back so soon.

“You will see,” said the guard. “Come on, let’s get this over with…” as the door to the cell opened and Max was cuffed, and walked a familiar pathway but this time not to a special room, but the regular visitor’s room.

Pushed into the room, he was startled to see Michael waiting for him.

“You,” Max asked as he watched his best friend get uncuffed and pushed into the chair, and they had to go through the phone system.

“Yeah me,” Michael muttered as he didn’t like seeing that it was Max of all people who was being treated as a common criminal when for so many years during his youth, it had been him that people treated as such… he reflected. It should be me in here and not Max.

“So…” Max asked as he could see the shock on his friend’s face as he knew he was reflecting on their past. “Not the life you expected me to have, huh?” he wondered as they both knew what the expectations in the beginning for them both, and this was not it.

“One could say that” Michael admitted as he knew this was life expected of him, not golden boy Max Evans who had the loving family while he was stuck with Hank Guerin of all people. “I figured we could talk, when your sister wasn’t here to intercede.”

“Never had this many visitors since I have been here,” Max allowed. “This is a new thing; I don’t know if I can get used to it?”

“Only because you told us to stay away, and then put our names on a ban list.” Michael asked.

“Then what name did you use?” Max asked. “And Michael there was never a ban list. I just wanted to wallow here myself. I didn’t want any of you coming here, and seeing me, and putting yourself in danger.”

“You’re a regular saint, aren’t you?” Michael asked.

“Well in this place, I am a plain old mass killer and domestic violence poster boy” Max said. “I am no saint Michael. I never was…”

“You were headed for better places,” Michael asked. “Until…”

“Until Tess” Max said finishing. “I got what I deserved. I was conned by her, and this is my penance for believing her.”

“We all believed her, when we should have been wary given how she came into our lives” Michael asked. “It’s not just on you…” he muttered. “And we didn’t ask you to turn yourself into a sacrificial martyr”

“You would have done the same thing if you were in my shoes,” Max muttered.

“Think again,” Michael sighed. “I wouldn’t have kept my wife away”

“Wouldn’t you?” Max asked. “You pushed Maria away after youknowwhat happened,” he asked referencing Agent Fisher, which is something he should not when he knew there were surveillance cameras.

“That was me. You loved Liz…” Michael asked. “You were Romeo to her Juliet?”

“I still love her,” Max said matter of flatly. “That hasn’t changed in these almost seventeen years. And given how Romeo and Juliet ended, we got lucky. With me here, and her alive and happy.”

“She hasn’t been happy Max. She has been missing you. She’s been waiting for you” Michael muttered. “When you were sentenced here, she was sentenced along with you. She just has more freedom than you do?”

“I didn’t ask her to wait,” Max sighed. “She knew I am never getting out of here…”

“She had your daughter you idiot. Olivia is a living memory of you. So, whether she had your ring on her finger or not. Looking at your daughter every day meant she would have never been able to get over you” Michael asked, and Olivia has been impacted by the feeling of that guilt he mused. How does a child grow up knowing they were a living memory of the man who could not come to you? “Do you know how hard it’s been here to raise your daughter, and to know you weren’t coming home at the end of the day?”

“Which is why I wanted her to stay away” Max admitted. “She had a chance if she wasn’t hung up on me.”

“That didn’t work out very well…”

“But it was what I wanted,” Max sighed. “Since the very beginning, I never wanted her to be hurt. It is why I was apprehensive about starting with anything with her because what happens if it went wrong, and Michael, it went wrong, and I will never forgive myself for doing that her.

Amelia was taking a walk. She had decided to abandon the high stakes of her mother’s shop. She knew Olivia was not going to go with her mother. She figured her mother needed to take the trip herself. So, Amelia took leave from the discussions and started browsing in the widows of fellow shops when she saw the hunk, she had noticed the day before around town. So, she could not help but approach I might be taken. But I do have eyes she mused to herself. “Do, I know you?”

“No, should I?” the blonde asked.

“It’s just you look familiar,” Amelia asked as she assessed the boy. “Like I should know you from somewhere. That is right, I have seen you around. Following me or something…” she asked with a laugh.

“How could I?” the blonde asked as he knew it was not this girl he was following, or he might if had any sense because she was that beautiful. “I don’t know who you are?”

“Amelia Guerin”

“Shouldn’t you be in school or something?” the blonde asked as he was taken by the fellow blonde, but he wasn’t going to show it as he tried to focus on something in the window of a shop they were stopped in front of.

“Should I not ask the same thing about you?” Amelia asked as she was taken by the hottie who looked like a stud and someone she had not experienced in this small town. “I have a free day, so how about you?”

“Already graduated,” the blonde muttered.

“Somehow I doubt that” Amelia muttered as he did not look that much older than she, Alex, and Olivia. “What are you up to here in Roswell, because you don’t look like someone I have seen in this small town before?”

“Whether you’ve seen me or not, I have got to go,” the blonde said as he walked away, and it left Amelia watching him walk away and she realized that she had not gotten his name.

“Hey, you didn’t tell me your name?” Amelia called.

“No, I didn’t” the blonde muttered as he disappeared and left Amelia puzzled but smitten.

“Who is this Zack Mason on my appointment sheet for tomorrow?” Isabel asked her secretary as she walked into the main portions of her office. “I don’t see a file for him?” she wondered. “Do we know him?”

“Nope, he called once and came by the office the other day” Felicia said as her eyes came from her computer. “Said it was something for the Sunshine Club or something”

“And he made an appointment for tomorrow?” Isabel asked. “I am supposed to be going out of town for the weekend with Kyle and the kids” he asked of the Taylor Swift concert they were taking the girls to in Las Cruces. Not her thing, or Kyle’s but it was Maxine’s and she had been happy for weeks since they surprised her with the tickets for Christmas. They were making a weekend of it, and in a glamourous hotel. Treating it as a family weekend. She was not cancelling it for anything, and they needed if the situation with her heated up.

“It’s a first appointment, so it probably will be short” Felicia asked.

“Yeah maybe” Isabel muttered.

“How’s your brother?” Felicia asked. “Do you think he’ll be a client for the Sunshine Club?

“I hope so,” Isabel sighed as she walked back into her office and got to work on the necessary paperwork, she hoped one day that her brother would be coming home to his wife and daughter.

“I figured she didn’t need me tagging along on her visit to Dad, if she actually does make it there” Olivia muttered as she sat and drank the drink that Maria offered her. “I don’t need to be intruding”

“You’re not intruding,” Maria sighed. “I hate this for her, and I hate this for you” she wondered. “Do you want to help out here for a little while, and get your mind off?”

“I hope you don’t hate me,” Olivia asked as she knew the parents knew. She and Alex had been handled with kid gloves all week, but she had a decision to make. “I don’t know what to do?”

“I don’t blame or hate you,” Maria smiled. “I blame my son” she sighed of her not yet sixteen-year-old son. “Being young, sometimes it’s a careless time.”

“We used protection,” Olivia muttered.

“It’s not fool proof, as I should know” Maria laughed as she thought of her own conception of her kids. Which surprised her and Michael at the most inopportune time in their newly patched up relationship. She was watching Liz deal with the ramifications of being married and alone, and she had not looked at herself until the stick turned blue. “You both are too young for these decisions and I wish you didn’t have to face them, so I am sorry for both of you” she asked because unlike her son and goddaughter. She and Michael had gone through the worse that life could offer during those years, and Alex and Olivia had experienced only a fraction of it, which was good, but it was also bad, because it made them even more inexperienced for what they were going through now. “And now on top of this, is your father?”

“I shouldn’t have gone there…” Olivia muttered. “It opened up the past for Mom. Apparently, I didn’t even know half of what went down?”

“No one did,” Maria sighed. “We were tight lipped about it for a reason. We never wanted it to revisit on you kids”

“I wanted to know. As I told Mom, well, he has been a ghost in my life. There but not there, and I needed to see the man. I just did not know everything. I thought I did, but I guess I didn’t” Olivia sighed.

“Your father did love your mother,” Maria sighed. “I know what it looks like. You might be thinking I am defending the indefensible but if your father had really been a bad man than your mother would not have stayed. Yes, it got intense, probably too intense at times and trouble found them both and neither behaved in ways that you should admire. They said things, did things that they would regret. It is on your mother too. But that night…”

“She tried to kill him, right?” Olivia asked. “He tried to kill you?”

“Yes, she did…” Maria sighed. “With me, I don’t hold it against him. I know he would not have treated me like he did if he was in his right mind. Heck Michael had his own issues a few weeks later, and he was just as rash and unreasonable but at least Max had a excuse in that Clayton Wheeler had inhabited the body, and your father fought like a devil to take hold, and because of your mother, he did, and they were able to start over” Michael had no such excuse for acting like a brutal dictator

“Why would any woman want that?” Olivia asked. “How is that a relationship I should want to model myself after?”

“You’re a product of today’s culture. Yet even today we put up with stuff we would not think we would. Sometimes love changes things. We never behave perfectly. Your father was indeed different after that. It was like he knew he got a miracle new shot with your mother, and he did not want to give it up. And your mother saw the same thing. She had gone to boarding school ready to give up on them because it was too hard. But losing him and getting him back made her see what she was losing. Otherwise, they might have been ready to marry so soon…”

“Mom says they would have gotten married in the first timeline,” Olivia asked. “A year later but still obviously she was always going to marry him. No matter how she was treated?”

“Sure,” Maria sighed. “We want to believe that we’ll always do the right thing. Love the right guys. But everyone has a side to them. Sometimes we see things and experience things. Your father was not the kind of man who was dangerous. Otherwise I would never have been a supporter of them. Stuff was done to them, that they did not ask for and it brought them back to each other, for a short time before it went haywire. Your father sacrificed himself for her. In that fall, it was either them both die or just him. He picked himself. Your mother brought him back in a way that Juliet could not do for Romeo. He had been trying to come back. But knowing your mother was in danger, well, he immediately acted. And unfortunately, it brought on consequences they did not see coming, and ultimately they were separated because of them” Maria sighed. “Really look at that footage and you will see. They doctored the video to make it what they wanted you to see from it. But I know you need time to adjust to all this. But to him, she was perfect.”

“I am not sure I believe it,” Olivia asked. “How can being perfect lead to so much pain?”

“Maybe you need to spend time with your father,” Maria asked. “You need to see that love for yourself?”

“You get used to it,” Max murmured as he and Michael stopped talking about Liz, and more about the last seventeen years. “The first days, weeks and months were tough to take but you eventually get used to the routine around here. Spending time in my cell allowed me time to think and I kept to myself…”

“No roommates?” Michael asked.

“I am convicted mass killer, so yeah, no roommate” Max laughed even though it was not a laughing matter. “I preferred it this way…”

“And you didn’t need your gifts?” Michael asked.

“It helped a little, but I had to be subtle about it,” Max admitted. “Otherwise I would have gotten a reputation, and that would have my stay here short, and I would have been a grave before too long. There are people who don’t think anything of poking you into something larger, and I know I am well defended in my abilities but it would have done none of us any good to use them, so I had to be like any other human in here, and pick my fights”

“It shouldn’t have, been you?” Michael muttered.

“It should not have been any of us,” Max sighed as he reflected on his life and the price he had paid. “I have made peace with what I have done in my life to get to this place. At the end of the day, it is all part of my story, for good and for the bad. I just hate that Liz and now Olivia have had to live in the shadow of my story”

“Yeah,” Michael sighed.

Needing to know of the child that had been existing in the shadows of a mythical father who could not be there. “How is my daughter?” Max asked as if he was starting to get used to the fact that he was father, which he was. “When she came to visit me, it was a game changer?”

“I figured, which is why Liz would have told you years ago if only you had allowed her in” Michael muttered at the silence that she had been forced to have endured because his friend hadn’t let in his wife.

“That was yesterday, when today is a new day” Max murmured as he did not have a lot of regrets, but the ones he did have was consequential. “Why kind of girl is she?”

“Ask your wife?” Michael murmured.

“I would if I could see her, and so I am asking you?” Max asked. “She looks just like Liz did at that age. It was like looking in a mirror and seeing her all over again”

“Yeah it’s become more obvious with time,” Michael sighed. “She would have liked to have known you. Your parents have been great with her, but still it’s not the same as having her father involved in her life.”

“Whether I knew or not. I still would have been in here…” Max muttered. “It wasn’t and still isn’t what I would have wanted them to spend their lives looking at me through, steel bars or this glass and only telephones to be able to talk into, and to communicate. Olivia has been able to have a life without the fear…”

“But without her father,” Michael murmured. “She’s had to deal with a lot. Liz has been wonderful with her, but still the girl had to grow up knowing, and while she had the Parker name and that prevented some of the abuse of having her father in prison. Still her friends did manage to find out, especially in this age of social media, and it was not the easiest of times when she was small and was getting looks. She did not know why she was getting looks but we did, and most of all Liz did. At least if she had known you, she would have known whether you loved her, and loved her mother.”

“She has to know I loved her mother, and I would have loved her…” Max asked stung at the thought of his daughter growing up feeling conflicted. “I never would have wanted her to grow up like that…”

“When you do not have a parent, you have to put up with what you do have. While she was in the dark about what you did to Liz, still, she grew up knowing her father in prison” Michael murmured. “It’s led her to be mixed up and rushing too much into being an adult?”

“I know about her and Alex…” Max sighed. “Isabel told me.”

“She probably didn’t tell you everything, and it’s not on me to tell you. But your daughter is very much grasping for something, anything to make sense and it’s not helping being told about the past when she can’t grasp it and is only seeing in her head the media coverage of how it all went wrong for you and her mother…”

“I never would have wanted that for her,” Max sighed.

“We never do,” Michael sighed. “If only you had fought back then then maybe you would have able to be there for your daughter?”

“I was saving more than I was giving up” Max sighed. “I would do it all over again because I was saving you, my sister and especially Liz. And knowing now that she was pregnant at the time. If something had happened to her, and she had lost Olivia, or something had been done to her, then I would not have been able to live with it as I know my decision had ramifications. But it was the safest decision I could make to keep you all safe…”

“We were our own people Max. We could have dealt with it. We did not need you sacrificing yourself for us. I get why you wanted to protect Liz. But when in the end, there was a tiny little girl needed her father, and she didn’t need a bunch of substitutes…” Michael asked. “She only has one father…”

“She has Liz…” Max asked. “It’s not like it was for you…” he mused, and Michael shook his head. “Liz is amazing, and I trust that she can handle it”

“She is but it is still not the same,” Michael sighed “Trying to be a saint at the end of the day isn’t helping the fact your daughter is crying out for her father, and what she has missed out on…”as outside in the parking lot, Liz parked her car, and again looked up at the big building she had seen for a few minutes just a few days ago, and now was back and she was in a inner debate between her head and her heart about whether to go in and truly change her circumstance. Knowing once she walked through those doors. She would be a different person, and she could never go back to being who she was before this minute. Especially as her head was trying to say this was lunacy, but then her heart was saying that it was Max, and that she needed to see Max. Come on Liz, this is the guy you have loved since you were fifteen.

Ultimately her heart won, and therefore, she opened the door and did go in.
