Note:

Hi! :D

I should be getting a new chapter for this one up in a few weeks (probably a lot sooner than that though). Went in a slightly different direction than I expected it too. Doesn't look like the Michael, Valenti, Whittaker part is going to happen, but it will be brought up in a future chapter. See you then!

Note: Finally another chapter done. This went into a different direction than I originally planned but I like where it went.

Chapter 39

Liz sat back in a metal chair observing the agent currently tied to another metal chair. Both his legs were bound along with his arms; they were tied once together and then once again to the back of the chair. She sat behind him waiting for him to wake. By the way he squirmed it would be soon.

The agent, a Mr. Steven Ryan, as the ID in his wallet stated, was a June baby, born in the year nineteen eighty five. Steven had brown eyes, dark blonde hair, and weighed a little over one hundred and ninety pounds. Also in his wallet were pictures; a wife, a couple kids, their pets, and a nice normal looking house in the background.

The man groaned, softly but Liz still caught the low grumble. “Ah, Mr. Ryan, you’re awake. Wonderful.”

“Who…”

“I know, you’re wondering who I am, where you are, and what could I possibly want from a nice normal guy like you?” She flicked at the picture in her hand. “We’ll get to all that.” Maybe. She’d get what she needed out of him but any other information he’d be left wondering. He wasn’t wired, so she didn’t have to worry about anyone overhearing her if she did indeed talk but the man in front of her was going to be dead soon, so why waste her breath?

“Where am I?” He pleaded.

“Blue Lady, didn’t I already say we’ll get to that?” This game would be moving at a snail’s pace if she humored him, which wasn’t happening. Michael would be at the Sheriff’s station for another forty five minutes to an hour, and she planned on being his watch dog to Max and Isabel’s.

“Please…I have a family. Don’t take me away from them.” He begged.

“Yea, your family.” She stood from the chair and entered into his field of vision. Liz smirked when his eyes widened. He clearly hadn’t believed what his memory told him. That a one hundred and ten pound woman had done all the damage he and his cohorts had sustained. “Your mind wasn’t playing tricks on you. Now back to your family.” Liz flipped the picture she held around so he could see it. “Wife, kids, two story home, a dog and a cat. It’s very sweet. Too bad it’s fake.”

This time he didn’t speak. Didn’t deny it or tell the truth, just watched her, so she continued. “For one, a dog and a cat? Pushing the normal line a bit too hard don’t you think? Plus, it’d be damn stupid of you to carry pictures of your family on a mission.” She tossed the wallet onto his lap.

“What do you want?” His voice came out steely, firm, confident; different from his weak, soft spoken voice from earlier.

“That’s the first smart question you’ve asked. All I want from you are two things. Number one: For you to be open and honest with your answers. And Number 2: Be quick with your answers. I have some prior commitments so I can’t spend all night here.”

A disbelieving snort came from her prisoner. “You’re insane.”

“I’ve been told that a few times. It’s not entirely inaccurate.” As if she’d be perfectly normal after her childhood. Liz was amazed she was as normal as she turned out to be.

“There’s nothing you can do that will make me talk.” He spat out through gritted teeth.

Liz shrugged. “Last we knew the Special Unit, at least here, had been disbanded. The facility they used was shut down.” She and Alex had gone through it a few times looking for anything that could help their friends but came up with nothing for their troubles except knowing the Special Unit were amazing cleaners. Not even a gum wrapper was left behind. “Where are you hiding out now?”

“Screw you.” He spit on the floor near her feet.

“That’s just rude.” Liz whips out a knife and slices cleanly through his black slacks. Blood wells up. The overpowering aroma of aftershave was missing, so she wouldn’t be getting those nightmares tonight. Others however, were sure to come.

The agent winced but didn’t utter a sound otherwise. He’d be talking soon enough. She hated where this path was taking her but her only other option was letting him go and that certainly wasn’t happening. His eyes darted back and forth and around the room.

“Don’t bother searching for the three you showed up with. They’re dead” She tossed the three other wallets she pilfered from the dead. “Next time…well, if there was to be a next time, I’d suggest not using the same house as a background for your family photos.” The pictures were taken at different areas around the house but she spotted some similarities here and there. “Where is the new base for the Special Unit?” Liz asked again, as calmly as she had before.

“You’re not going to get anything out of me.”

“We’ll see.” She stood from her chair, knife in hand, “Just know, the sooner you tell me, the less pain you’ll be in.”

Twenty Minutes Later

A glob of drool mixed with blood fell from the agent’s lips. “Stop.” He tried to swallow but his throat was raw from screaming. “Please.”

“Once you tell me what I want to know I’ll stop.” Liz poured a glass of water, for herself. “I suggest you answer my questions. Let’s go with an easier one than where the Special Unit is holed up. How about, why are you working for Congresswoman Whittaker? What could she possibly want with aliens?”

His head jerks up, a sudden thought occurred to him. “Are you an alien?” If possible he looked even more frightened than when she had been torturing him. Interesting.

“No. Made right here on good ol’ Earth.”

“Then why do you,” cough, more blood spurts out, “why do you care? They’re here to destroy us.” His voice got a little stronger as he tried to convince her of his conviction. “They’re trying to wipe us out.”

Liz rolled her eyes. “Just because I’m not an alien doesn’t mean I’m a normal human. Besides, even if I wasn’t…enhanced, I’m friends with some very nice aliens. If they were captured and tortured I’d be rather cross.” Liz grabbed a towel and slowly with careful movements, wiped off some blood from his chin. Showing the agent some kindness before she became his torturer again.

“What are you?”

“That’s not important.” She brushed the unimportant question aside. “Think of me as the alien’s liaison. I’m here to greet potential comrades and threats. If you have been proven to be the latter you’ll be disposed of.” Liz tossed the towel into a plastic bin. “Now, are you going to tell me what I need to know or are we going to have another round like the last one?”

His sobs begin anew but he doesn’t speak. “Round two it is.”

Ten Minutes Later

It didn’t take long for him to spill his knowledge. She hadn’t had to do much more than she had before. He gave her everything she needed and then some.

Liz, who had turned on the furnace earlier while waiting for her prisoner to wake up, now stood in front of it. It was plenty hot. Sweat beaded on her forehead and on the back of her neck. This would get the job done. One of the reasons why she kept this place was for this furnace.

Turning back to the bloodied man tied to a cold metal chair Liz smiled sadly at him. “I appreciate you making this easier on yourself.” She spoke to him as she loaded the clothes she stripped from the bodies in the SUV into the furnace.

“Didn’t really have a choice.” His breaths came out stuttered. She had done some damage to his inner organs. Pain flashed in her eyes but he couldn’t really bring himself to feel sorry for his abuser. “What’s that for?” ‘Steven’s’ voice shook. She got his real name out of him, Aaron; it wasn’t necessary but she accepted it. Gave him a drink of water as a reward for that.

She cast a glance his way, wondering if he was dumb or just wanted to hear her say it. “For getting rid of evidence.”

“I thought you were going to let me go.” Aaron’s terror spiked and she felt his fear in her soul.

This wasn’t something she wanted to do, she didn’t like killing people, even if they deserved it. And torturing innocent people simply because they weren’t of Earth meant he deserved to die. Liz wished it wasn’t her that was tasked to carry it out.

“I never said that.” Now that she got the information she needed she didn’t have to be as cold and direct as she had been.

Aaron tries one last plea. Hoping for a reprieve. “Please. You don’t want to do this. I can tell.” His breath ran out and he had to take in big gulps before continuing. “It’ll haunt you if you kill me. Please let me go.” He begged.

Sighing Liz tosses some plastic bins covered with blood and filled with blood soaked items into the furnace. He’s right, she didn’t want to do this. If she could she would let him go free, have him limp away to a hospital to get the medical attention he desperately needed. However, too many factors kept her from doing just that.

“You’re right. I don’t want to do this.” She admitted to him. “But if I let you go, you’ll run back to the Special Unit or you’ll be after me with the same fervor that you hunt the aliens with. That’s a hassle I don’t need or want.”

With sadness she wheeled out the three bodies to the blazing inferno and began, with some struggle, to toss them into the fire. The smell was horrendous, even thru the closed hatch the scent was powerful. Thank the Blue Lady she chose a warehouse out, away from civilization.

“Don’t throw me in there. Please.” Aaron shook, he had already lost control of bladder once during the interrogation but apparently he still had more to lose.

“Have to. Can’t have your body lying around. But you’ll be dead before you go in there. I’m not going to burn you alive.” It wasn’t much but she hoped that was a bit of a comfort.

Aaron began to sob. Loudly.

It didn’t take him long to start shouting at the top of his lungs for help. Hoping. Praying, someone would walk by and hear him. No one would. As she loaded the last of the currently dead in there she shut the hatch door again. While waiting for the second to last to burn she faced the last one.

As he wept she got behind his shaking frame. She clasped one hand on his forehead, another under and to the side of his chin cupping it gently. “I’m sorry.” Liz whispered and with one clean snap his neck broke and his cries were quieted.

Liz lowered his head back and stepped away from Aaron. Despite not living anymore he wasn’t still. People thought the dead stopped moving immediately, but the mind takes a little bit of time to catch up with the reality of death. As Aaron twitched she untied him and dumped him on the wheeled pallet. She’d toss him in, clothes and all. There was time to dump the body now but, noticing the late hour, there wouldn’t be time to strip the SUV. That would have to wait. With the tracking device she disabled earlier the vehicle wouldn’t be traced, it could remain there for a while longer if needed.

Over the next ten minutes Liz meticulously cleaned up the area where Aaron had been tortured, she hefted his large body into the furnace, and then tossed all the rags she had used in as well. She waited a few minutes before stripping off her own clothes and throwing them in too. No trace of these men would be found. They’d be just another missing person in Roswell, New Mexico. Humorously assumed to be abducted by aliens.

With the area, minus the SUV, scrubbed she went to the small backroom off that she converted into a bedroom. There were nights her and Alex needed to recover or get away, this was where they came. Walking to the bathroom in the corner she showered. Washing off any DNA left on her away. She’d have to clean the drain thoroughly but that could wait till later, after the SUV was cleaned and dismantled.

Once out of the shower she dried off and dressed. The snug olive grey t-shirt and black leggings clung to her body. She slipped into shoes that were the exact replica of the ones she had thrown in the furnace. As quickly as she could she dried her hair then put it up in a messy bun. Grabbing her coat and her house keys she left the warehouse.

It took her ten minutes to run from the warehouse to the Sheriff’s station. Liz arrived there just as Michael was being walked out by Valenti. Ducking out of sight Liz scurried up the drain pipe and silently crouched on the metal fire escape.

“Let me drive you home, son.” Valenti offered, fully aware of Whittaker behind him.

Michael thanked him but declined. “Not going home, Max’s place is closer. I’ll crash there tonight.”

“You sure you don’t want a ride?”

“Had enough rides in police cars for one night. I’ll walk.” He put his hands in his pockets, sending a glare to both Valenti and his shadow.

Jim relented. “All right. Just be careful out there.” The look exchanged between them said everything. He knew Whittaker was up to something and he didn’t want Michael to end up in her custody.

“I will Sheriff.” He couldn’t explain it but he was certain he’d have an escort to the Evans’s. He might not see her but Liz would for sure be watching. It was weird, admittedly, to be the one on the opposite side, normally he looked out for everyone else.

With his hands still in his pockets Michael jogged away from the station, toward Max’s street. Liz remained on the rooftops, jumping from building to building, then roof to roof once the city gave way to neighborhoods easily keeping pace with Michael. Maybe she should let him know that she was there but honestly she didn’t want to talk to Michael. Not right then. He’d ask what happened to the guys and she couldn’t talk about it, the experience was too raw, too close to her conscience.

She followed at a safe distance. Kept her eyes on the surrounding areas and other senses alert and open. Michael’s walk was peaceful and uneventful. Liz waited on the roof of a home a couple houses away and stayed there till he had climbed in through Max’s window. Breathing a sigh of relief she left the quiet street.

Although exhausted Liz didn’t want to go home. She jumped down from the roof and ran down the empty sidewalk. Occasionally she’d pass by a lit window or hear a dog in someone’s backyard but the street was deserted tonight. She didn’t know where she was headed, all she knew was that she had to run. Had to get the excess energy that coursed through her body out.

Liz didn’t know how long she ran for but she soon found herself in front of a familiar building. The motel where Alec’s staying. The journey there had been a blur, she didn’t entirely know why she sought him out but she wasn’t about to question it right then either. She might not have known why but it felt right. Being here felt like what she needed.

With some apprehension she knocked on his door. Silence greeted her knock, was he even here? She almost raised her hand again to knock but she heard rustling inside. Then his deep voice, rough from sleep, came through the door.

“Hold on.” Less than fifteen seconds later Alec opened the door, shirtless with low slung jeans, unbuttoned but zipped up, showing off his firm muscled chest and those ‘V’ lines on his pelvis that made her go stupid. “Hey.” He smiled but it quickly fell, realizing that if she was here at that time of night it couldn’t be good. “Are you okay?”

“No.” She surprised even herself with that omission. A lie had been on the tip of her tongue but she couldn’t utter a simple yes. “Not really.” Liz pushed back her hair and held it tight in her hand. “Can you do me a favor and not ask me any questions right now? Can you just let me stay here tonight? I know it’s a lot to ask…”

“Liz, it’s okay. Come in.” Alec left his spot at the door, reaching out and pulled Liz inside.

Slowly she moved, unsure of how far she wanted to go, she let him guide her into his arms. Once there he wrapped his arms around her and she sighed with shaky relief.

Alec had no idea what to do. He’d never had someone just show up at his door seeking comfort. He was a little scared for Liz, not knowing what happened. While he never promised he wouldn’t ask her questions he would respect her wish.

When he felt a wet drop fall on his chest his heart broke for her. Alec only pulled her tighter as her silent tears transformed into quiet but mournful sob. Wanting to move them from the open doorway he took one arm from her shaking frame and shut the door before putting his arm right back around her.

He didn’t tell her it’d be ok. Didn’t give promises that he had no idea if he could keep. All he did was hold her and kiss her temple, whispering that she was safe here. It was all she seemed to need.
