Part 7
“I don’t think I’m ready for this” Maria admitted as her and Liz drove towards Michael’s apartment that night.
After Maria had fainted it took Liz close to ten minutes to get her to come around. At first Maria had thought it was all a dream but once she caught sight of the destiny book Michael’s words rang through her head, “I found Maria’s mate,” and she had immediately started crying.
After that Liz had kicked Michael out with the promise that they would both be there that night and went back to her best friend. She knew what it felt like to have a destiny pushed at you and she always envied Maria that she didn’t.
“God Liz why did this have to happen now?” she cried
“I know it sucks but you never know you might like him,” Liz tried to reason.
“I don’t even know him what if he just expects me to be with him like Michael does with you? At least you knew Michael before,” she said.
“True,” Liz sighed. “I don’t know Maria but one thing I do know is that we’re not going to let Michael and who ever this fourth alien is run our lives anymore. As of tonight we’re taking back our lives and saying fuck off to destiny,” Liz informed her.
“Really?” Maria asked unsure.
“Really,” Liz said and Maria could tell by the conviction in her voice that Liz was deadly serious.
“You really like him don’t you?” Maria asked. There had to be reason why all of sudden Liz was going to stick up for herself and Maria knew it wasn’t just the news Michael had delivered. Something had changed that made Liz want to change and she suspected that it was Max.
“Yeah,” Liz whispered. It was the first time she had admitted it out loud but it was the truth. Max Evans had wormed his way into her heart and she was helpless to stop it and she didn’t want to.
“I’m happy for you Liz,” she told her.
Liz smiled, “So no more tears ok, tonight we take a stand ok?”
Maria smiled. “Ok,” she agreed.
“It will be fine Ria,” Liz assured her as she pulled the car up out the front of Michael’s apartment complex. It had been almost a month since she had been here she thought.
“I have to tell you something before we go in there,” Maria said then stopping Liz from opening her door.
“Ok,” Liz nodded.
“Last night I kissed Michael,” she blurted out.
Liz looked at Maria shocked and then burst out laughing, “Your kidding right?”
Maria shook her head, “No.”
“What happened?” Liz asked excitedly for her best friend.
“Well at first he kissed me back but then all of sudden he was all like, I’m with Liz and then he walked out and left me to close by myself,” she said.
“Don’t give up hope Ria I think he’ll come around eventually,” she told her best friend.
“Yeah but somehow I don’t think so,” she told her sadly.

Max looked at the clock nervously. There was still ten minutes until six o’clock but he feeling on edge. He wasn’t sure why but he had the feeling that something big was going down tonight. On top of that his senses felt a burst of power coming from the apartment next door a few minutes earlier and he suspected that Michael might not be the only one he was meeting tonight and for the first time since this morning he wondered if he should trust him.
Unable to wait any longer he stood up and strode purposefully out of the apartment unable to wait any longer.
***
Liz and Maria were only inside Michael’s apartment for a few minutes before there was a knock on the door.
“Ok so let me do all the talking,” Michael told them.
Maria frowned. “Are you sure we can trust him?”
“Well we’ll see soon enough,” he shrugged.
“Typical Michael,” Liz grunted under her breath.
Liz and Maria couldn’t see the person on the other side as Michael opened the door and invited the other alien in but as soon as Michael stepped aside they Liz’s breath caught in her throat.
“Max?” she questioned totally confused. Her heart was beating a mile a minute as she thought of all the reason that he could be standing there.
Max was surprised despite the fact he knew there was potential for Liz to be there when he saw her and Maria standing there.
“Hi Liz, Hi Maria,” he greeted.
“You three know each other?” Michael asked confused.
“Yeah,” Max answered.
“How?” Michael asked shooting a look at Liz who was standing in shock staring at Max.
When it was obvious Liz wasn’t going to answer Michaels question Maria’s spoke up. “Max is the new owner of the Roswell Gym and Liz’s personal trainer,” she explained.
“Oh,” Michael frowned as he looked at the other alien he didn’t know if he liked the amount of time Liz was spending with him or the way she was looking at him now.
“Well let’s sit down,” Michael suggested.
Michael pulled the book out and handed it to Max then. “This is it,” he told him. “I found it in a cave out on the reservation,” he told him.
Max ran a hand over the book and felt the power it held. “Wow,” he said. He looked at the pictures on the front and the intricate lock. “Can you open it?” he asked.
“We’ve tried but it wont budge,” Michael explained.
Liz who had been sitting quietly beside Maria spoke up then. “What happened to you?” she whispered.
Max looked up and smiled gently at her. “I wasn’t ready to leave the pod. I tried calling out to you to tell you to wait but I guess you guys couldn’t,” he said. “I emerged later on and you were all gone, I couldn’t feel any of you. The Evans found me in the dessert.”
“I remember,” Liz whispered. “I remember you calling out to me begging me to wait,” she said a tear sliding down her face.
Michael looked between the two. “I think you two are brother and sister,” he declared. “That’s probably why you had a connection when you were younger,” he added.
Max and Liz’s eyes both snapped to him.
“We don’t know that” Maria spoke up. “We don’t know anything about ourselves at all,” she added.
Max looked like he wanted to say something but he bit down on it.
“What is it?” Liz asked him.
“I have dreams,” he told them. “I think they might be memories from our past.”
“What!” Michael cried, “What are they about?” he demanded.
“They’re confusing,” he said, “They don’t make much sense at all. I write them down so maybe one day what I see or hear might make sense”
Max continued fingering the book he could see Liz and Michael’s picture on both sides of the lock but not his or Maria’s and wondered why.
“I’m pretty sure that the pictures represent our pairs,” Michael informed him. “Liz is my mate and Maria is yours,” he informed him.
Max’s lifted piercing Amber eyes up to him. “Excuse me?” he asked.
“I’ve always been drawn to Liz and the picture confirmed it she’s my mate, probably was in our last life as well.”
“So the two of you are…?” he asked looking at Liz begging her to deny what Michael was telling him. Because if what Michael was saying was true than Max knew much more about Liz than he wanted to right now.
“Together,” Michael confirmed.
“Look I don’t care what some book says,” Maria spoke up then. “No offence Max you’re a cool guy but kind of not my type,” Maria smiled.
Max smiled back. “No offence taken and I feel the same way Maria. In fact I’m positive that Michael is wrong,” he added.
Michael scowled. “Wrong about what?”
“Everything,” Max told him.
“And what do you know?” Michael snapped.
“I know that seeing your pictures on the front of a book doesn’t mean your mates. You have no idea what’s inside of this book or what it will say,” he added.
“Well then explain to me why I’m so drawn to Liz why I’ve been in love with her my entire life?” he asked.
“I cant. Do you feel the same Liz?” Max asked turning pleading eyes to her.
Michael watched her expectantly. “No,” she whispered. “And I’m with Maria. I’m done with this destiny shit,” she said.
Michael looked at Liz hurt. “Stop lying Liz you know all I have do is touch you,” Michael smirked.
“Stop,” she demanded her eyes darkening in warning.
Max turned his eyes back to the book then a scene from one of his dreams flashed into his mind. “I think I know how to open this,” he whispered.
“What?” Maria asked excited.
“I’m pretty sure I know how to open this,” he said again.
“How?” Liz asked.
“There are leaders, mates. They will be able to open it when they’re connected,” he told them his eyes staring into Liz’s knowing that in his heart that it would be him and her that would be able to open the book.
“Well that’s Liz and I so we should try” Michael said then grabbing the book from Max’s hand.
“Michael,” Liz said looking between him and Max.
“What? Don’t you want to open the book? Come on Liz,” he said.
It was Maria who finally voiced what they were all thinking. “How do you know it’s you?”
“What?”
“Max said it was the leader and his mate, right Max?” she said looking at Max who nodded. “How do you know it’s you?” she asked him.
“Of course its me. Me and Liz,” he scoffed at Maria.
Liz decided to play along and took Michaels hand. They formed a connection easily but Liz was careful to block her mind from Michael, which was easy because she knew that Michael was terrible with connecting to people. They placed their joint hands over the book and concentrated on unlocking it but after a few minutes it was obvious that it wasn’t going to work.
“It didn’t work,” she said when they broke away biting back a smile as thought about what it could mean.
“So either Liz isn’t your mate or you’re not the leader,” Max told him. “Which one do you think it is?” Max asked him.
“You and Maria should try,” he said handing Max the book.
Max looked at Maria and shrugged. They both knew it wouldn’t work but they tried anyway. Maria giggled when Max connected with her and she was flooded with images of Liz.
They did the same thing that Michael and Liz did and it didn’t work.
“So we know we’re not mates what next?” Maria asked.
“You and Michael should try” Max suggested to Maria.
Michael and Maria took their turn but were also unable to open it. Michael threw the book down in frustration. “What now?” he asked.
Liz picked up the thrown book and approached Max. “You know we’re going to open this don’t you?” Max whispered and Liz nodded and smiled.
Taking Max’s hand Liz connected to him without even having to try and within second of touching the book it unlocked.
“Oh my god,” Maria gasped.
