I'm glad Grace and Jake decided to go for their drive. Elizabeth can't give up now. She needs to hold on until Max can get there. Then they need to find Nicholas and make him pay.

On the Razor's Edge - Chapter 62 - 12/09/2019

Post by Parker1947 »

Max walked in the mine at the exact moment the heart monitor died and the patient flatlined. He had seen an emotionally rattled Jake and Grace from the road as he pulled up, and they walked back into the mine together. He thought he prepared himself on the drive, but nothing prepared for the sight he saw and took a full assessment of the situation and saw the debris of the fire fight, and bodies tied up on the ground and the doctor still handcuffed to the bench. He had taken Grace’s warning seriously and hadn’t moved. “What’s going on here?” Max asked as he saw the darkness around the table.

Then he saw it. First the heart monitor flatlined and flashes of Grace’s own experience played in his mind, and then he saw his goddaughter displayed on the gurney like she was a science experiment. Fuck! he swore.

“Dad you have to come quick. You need to help her, save her. I couldn’t do it, and she needs you. We’re losing her” Grace’s pleas came quick at Max as Jake just stood there in a ghost like existence, ready to collapse.

“Take him outside for some fresh air. Let me see what I can do” Max said softly as Grace and he both knew that neither should be there to see if Max wasn’t able to bring her back. They didn’t need that on their conscious. So, Grace nodded and guided a zombie like Jake out of the salt mine and Max looked down at his goddaughter on the table, as he turned off the heart monitor that had been flatlined for too long now.

“You’re a Guerin, you need to come back to us,” Max pleaded as he placed his hand on her chest, over her heart, not too hard to leave a mark but enough to allow for the transfer of his power to try to restart her heart and tried in vein to bring her back to them, and to life.

You need to let me die. I am not a Guerin if I broke so don’t let my parents go through life knowing what a screw up I am. It’s better if I go now, and we don’t prolong the pain. I am in too much pain to live. They won. I need to go, so let me go.

But Max wasn’t prepared to let her die as seconds later he felt her heart start to beat again as eyes opened, “Welcome back” he whispered and then he heard a faint sound of “You should have let me die” and Max felt gutted as she managed to say the words through the tubing still down her throat.

He told no one, not his daughter and not Michael and Maria of their daughter’s first words after surviving and for years it would weigh on him that Nicholas could be so brutal against someone so innocent, and the fact he played with the life of someone who wasn’t asking them of anything or had done anything to hurt Nicholas or Khivar. They had claimed the life of an innocent, and forever changed her life.

And he knew Nicholas wasn’t done.

But for that moment he was so Max could find relief for himself that they hadn’t lost her, but knew she was forever changed. They were forever changed. Turning, he saw Jake and in a single glance he knew he had overheard his sister’s words and they made a mutual nod not to mention it to anyone. “She’s back.”

Jake nodded as he approached his sister and took her hand and held it and prayed.

*

The authorities arrived moments later as the blaring could be heard for miles as Grace watched them surround the mine, and she saw Isabel in the chaos of arriving as she had driven with Kyle and her father-in-law as Amy stayed with all the grandkids, wanting the sanity of young kids to save her from watching what she was going to have to witness. Isabel had been near the station doing an errand when she got the text from her brother and she rushed over to the station who was now in full battle crisis mode, and Kyle joined them as he got the text just in time to get int the same car.

Grace ran into her aunt’s arms and cried truly for the first time since it all began, as the hug wasn’t about being the strong one for her boyfriend as he faced his families ruin. Now she was a child again. “Glad you came.”

“Where is my brother?” Isabel asked as the authorities rushed into the mine.

“In there,” Grace said softly to her aunt and uncle as they watched the chaos. “Aunt Isabel, we lost her”

“What!” Isabel croaked.

“Dad got her back, but she was gone. Jake has been down there since then, but it’s a horror show Aunt Isabel and Uncle Kyle” Grace shuttered. “It’s worse than you can even imagine. Way worse than the stories of the White Room and Dad.”

“Shit!” Kyle groaned as Isabel went pale at the mention because it had led to a lot of pain for both her brother and husband as Kyle had ended up shot. She knew firsthand how bad it was for her brother as she had had seen him in there due to her talent. Other than her, only Liz really knew had it was for Max to experience the abuse he did by the hands of the Special Unit, and now to see it happen again on a young girl, so much more innocent than even her parents were at her age.

As the deputies started to bring out the men Jake and Grace had apprehended handcuffed out of the silver mine as they looked at Grace with fear, and she smiled. Isabel looked at Grace with new eyes. “What did you do?”

“Made sure we saved Elizabeth,” was all Grace said. “And this time I don’t regret it” she murmured as she thought that maybe it was time to embrace her skills if they were going to be attacked by Nicholas and their goons and they were going to be merciless. So, why couldn’t they be the same way? Who has to the bigger person when you’re getting attacked and the other team is torturing innocents?

“That’s the doctor who was basically carving up Elizabeth to the torture inflicted on her” Elizabeth pointed out the doctor who was being escorted out of the mine by Jim personally. Jim hadn’t made it to see his granddaughter yet, because Jake and Max were standing guard as he had to be the Sheriff and deal with the criminals.

Shoving the doctor into the Sheriff’s truck, he locked the door from the outside to make sure he didn’t leave. Going back into salt mine just as the ambulance arrived with Maria and Michael on their heels.

*

Down in the mine, Jim wanted to throw up like everyone else did when they saw the scene and the horror and this was personal for Jim as he didn’t see the spunk in his granddaughter’s eyes or the power she was always threatening to use with her fun quips and humor as he saw pain now in Elizabeth’s whose eyes were glossy and mostly closed but had the ability to open when she felt a twitch of pain as those eyes showed immense angst as she glanced into space and willed to die but no one could remove the tubes or wires because they didn’t know what they could inflicting by doing such a act unless she was in the hospital and under their care.

Jim walking in on it now knew they hadn’t grasped the horror of it even in all the worries over the two weeks. This was brutal and horrific and to know it was his granddaughter only made all the worse. Paramedics came rushing in and even they gasped at what they saw in this Frankenstein’s lab.

Pure torture.

They knew they couldn’t move her because of what was attached to her, and so they decided to carryout the gurney and use it as a stretcher so just as they were about to her out to load into the waiting ambulance that was very real. “Where is my daughter?” Michael Guerin demanded as he rushed into the salt mine. Maria stayed outside because Isabel and Grace convinced her that she needed to wait. But Michael couldn’t wait for them to bring out his daughter.

He needed to see her himself and he couldn’t wait. But nothing could capture the horror when he realized what his little girl had gone through as he heard a wail come from the closed throat when someone accidentally bumped into the gurney as the drugs were wearing off and the pain from the shock of the Max bringing her back to life was allowing the drugs to wear off and to bring all the pain rushing back.

“Elizabeth,” Michael whispered as he saw his son now completely pale and Max looking like he wanted to be sick. “What did they do to you?”

“Sir, we have to get your daughter to the hospital. She was already lost once, and we don’t want another incident” one of the paramedics said quietly as Michael went pale and looked at Max who nodded, and he stepped aside as the paramedics lifted previous blood bag that still contained some of the blood off the IV pole that hadn’t dripped into the girl’s arm and put it on the stomach of the patient so that the doctors knew what her captors had done to the patient and then they picked up the gurney and carried it down the mine and up the stairs, and out into the sunlight.

As gasps came through the crowd as the gathered. Michael immediately went to Maria whose face was white, and he stopped her from fainting in shock as neither had anticipated this level of torture or pain as Elizabeth’s face saw sunlight for the time in nearly two weeks since it was nighttime the last time she was moved but it was too much for her system as she started to go into cardiac arrest again as they dropped the gurney to the ground and worked to get her to stabilize as they used the paddles as her parents watched in horror as Maria took her son into her arms, and they watched in shock as Max embraced his daughter.

Finally, they stabilized Elizabeth, and moved her into the ambulance and connected her to the heart monitor and a true IV drip. The use of the pain medication allowed her to drift back into unconsciousness as the paramedics or anyone else didn’t realize the tolerance and dependence she now had on the pain medication.

“Head on out,” Jim grimly said to the ambulance driver as he stayed behind to monitor.

“Jim, what did they do to my daughter?” Maria asked her stepfather. “Please tell me you caught the monster who did this my girl” she asked with rage in her eyes. “Please tell me you caught him.

“According to the men arrested, they said Nicholas got out before Jake and Grace started their raid of the place. So, he’s still out there…”

Maria broke down in tears as she suffered a breakdown as Michael took her in his arms and guided her to the car. Max nodded to his daughter to take her car, and to take Jake with her and he would drive his own car to the hospital. “I love you,” he whispered to his daughter. “You know that, right?”

“I love you too,” Grace nodded as she looked sad as she glanced at her father “Daddy, she’s still going to be Elizabeth, right?” Grace asked.

“I don’t know sweetheart, I really don’t know” he muttered as he remembered Elizabeth’s faint words that she wanted to die, and knew she had a big battle on her hands if she was to survive. Grace nodded and guided a broken-hearted Jake to the car, and they drove back to Roswell.

Not caring about their own personal scandal but of their fallen friend and sister.

On a Razor's Edge - Chapter 63 - 12/12/2019

Post by Parker1947 »

KIDNAPPED GIRL FOUND BRUTALIZED BUT ALIVE IN FRANKENSTEIN STYLE LAB NEAR ROSWELL

Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Guerin was found today in an old salt mine, one hour outside of Roswell, New Mexico on an old service road near the interstate. A service road that was popularized more than 20 years ago but when the interstate was improved, the salt mine fell on hard times and closed. Citizens of nearby Roswell never imagined that it would be the site of a grizzly find when a teenage girl who was kidnapped nearly two weeks ago after her high school prom was found today barely alive, and in what can only be described as a Frankenstein type lab with a doctor conducting unspeakable acts on the girl. He and five other individuals who can’t be named due to the investigation have been arrested and been denied bail. The mastermind who goes by the name Nicholas is wanted for the crime after he was initially arrested in the initial mayhem of the kidnapping, but evidence couldn’t be found to link him but now there is evidence I am told, and the hunt is on.

We’re told the girl’s condition is touch and go and she’s slipped into a coma on the way to the hospital and it’s not known whether she will survive. It was her older brother; 18-year-old Jacob Guerin and his girlfriend, 16-year-old Grace Evans who found the unspeakable crime scene as they were out for a drive after spending time at a nearby cabin with their parents. Family and friends have rushed to the hospital and praying for the girl’s condition to stabilize. The girl’s parents, notable author Maria Deluca Guerin and her husband Michael are said to be distraught and are asking for prayers for their teenage daughter.

Ms. Deluca Guerin remaining dates of her press tour for her latest best-seller Shock and Awe have been cancelled and the upcoming release of the next one is on hold that was scheduled for next year is likely to also be postponed or cancelled outright as they grieve and try to help their daughter recover.

The family is asking for privacy during this time, and no more information will be given out at the direction of the police as they work to investigate and for the family who wish to support their daughter.

Alexandra looked horrified as she read the article that her friend had forwarded to her as she was chatting on a messenger service. Eyes went up when she saw that her sister’s name was mentioned in the article. Getting out her cellphone, she texted her father and Grace… “Thinking of you. Love, Alexandra. “Whoa” she muttered as she went back to the article as Serena knocked on the door of the spare room she was staying in with Carrie. Carrie was playing videogames with Jonathan and Matthew downstairs. “Yes,” she asked as Serena’s head popped in.

“Your mother is downstairs…” Serena was all she said.

That surprised Alexandra because both she and Carrie knew their mother’s schedule. “What’s wrong because Mom is not due back until tomorrow” Alexandra asked as she eyebrows rose and got up from the bed which she was using her laptop on. “Why is she back early?”

“You can ask her” Serena was all she said as they walked downstairs, and Carrie had stopped playing videogames and now was sitting by her mother and Alexandra had the same sense as her sister that things were different. She saw her mother was on edge. She had to wonder if she knew about what was happening back in Roswell.

“Mom, what’s up?” Alexandra asked as she focused on her mother and sister and knew this had to be bad omen for her mother to come back so quickly after heading to New York for a conference or they were told. “Did you hear about Elizabeth?”

“Yes, I did,” Beth nodded as she felt traumatized from the reports she read and talking to Max only made it worse and therefore she cancelled plans to come home the following day and came home immediately be able to take comfort in her children’s faces. “I talked to your father and they are at the hospital. No news yet,” was all she could say.

“Then why are you home?” Carrie asked. “Is your conference over?”

“Girls, we need to talk” Beth said softly as Alexandra looked wary.

“That sounds ominous,” Alexandra muttered as she sat down beside her sister. “So, what is up?” she asked as she and her sister exchanged a Uh oh look at each other and Serena only watched amused. She knew what Beth was going to be telling the twins.

“Girls it wasn’t a conference I went to in New York yesterday,” Beth sighed as she saw the alarm on her daughter’s faces. “It was a job interview because I am up for a new position at a new hospital.”

“Excuse me,” Alexandra asked with alarm. “Are you telling me we’re moving to New York?” she wanted to know. “If you are, no way, that is further away not closer to Dad and Grace” she said of her father and sister. “We can’t be living in New York.”

“Alex is right. No way, can’t you tell them no? We can stay here, but no moving to New York” Carrie muttered as she secretly pondered ways to prevent such an occurrence. There was no way she was moving to New York, when she rather be closer to her father and to Grace. Alexandra felt the same way.

“You two, calm down because we’re not moving to the New York” Beth was quick to assure her daughter. “But if I took the position, well, we would be moving. But the position is not in New York. The people I was meeting with were for a set of meetings, and they wanted to meet with me there initially.”

“Yeah,” Alexandra asked as she didn’t know what her mother was going to say in response.

“There is a new hospital geared only to children being opened, and they want me to help set up a department and run that department and it would be year contract initially, and maybe more if we’re successful” Beth said as she long gotten these kind of offers, and yet because of the kids and because loyalty to the hospital for saving her life, she always resisted them but this time, this offer was too good to pass up. It fell into her lap, and she knew it was a sign.

“That is incredible Mom, Congratulations” Alexandra smiled but then stopped as if she didn’t want to know where they would end up. “But if not New York, where then?”

“Las Cruces, New Mexico” Beth said carefully as the twin’s mouths dropped opened as they received the unexpected location for their move. “That is a much better reaction,” she laughed. “So yeah, what do you think?”

“You mean we would be closer to Dad and Grace?” Carrie asked almost in a whisper before it sinks in and she became louder with excitement. “And we could see them all the time.”

“As much as schedules can allow,” Beth smiled. “Of course, Las Cruces is a distance from Roswell, so if we did do this, you would have to start new schools…”

“Mom, we were supposed to be starting a new school in September anyways” Alexandra smiled. “Whether we move or not. High school is a whole new school for us. It would be perfect if we could see Dad and Grace more…” she sighed. “Have you made your decision yet?”

“It wouldn’t do it without hearing your opinion” Beth smiled. “I know this will change our lives. Because so much of our lives have been here in Connecticut, so to move across the country would be a lifestyle change for all of us.”

“Mom, you have been asking for a sign” Alexandra asked. “This is the gods telling us that we need to be near Dad and Grace. I know it’s a big change, but come on, this is our chance start a whole new chapter, and a new story.”

Beth couldn’t help but laugh as she looked over at Serena who nodded as if she agreed with her kids. “It’s not a done deal. They want me to come to New Mexico for an interview on Tuesday, and we would narrow down more details. So, it’s not official, but it’s only me and someone else in the running…”

“Do we have to stay with Serena longer?” Carrie asked.

“No, you guys would come with me,” Beth admitted as the twin’s eyes lit up at their mother’s news of an unexpected summer adventure. Beth knew she needed to bring them along because she didn’t want to be across the country without her kids close to her or able to be quickly in her eyesight. She knew she couldn’t be away from them with everything going on with Elizabeth, and according to Max, the mastermind was still on the loose which meant a whole other level of unknown that Beth didn’t even want to contemplate with this move on the horizon. Because she didn’t know what it meant if she got the job, and then took it, and what it meant for the safety of her daughters. But she knew she needed to try… So, it meant the girls would be coming with her so she could figure out their next steps. “We’ll be staying at a hotel in Las Cruces and it would be chance to look for housing and schools if I do get the job” Beth said to the elation of the girls. “And you would get to see your father and Grace. We’re not going to be staying with them because of everything up in the air for them, and I wouldn’t want to put the pressure on them.”

“Cool, another hotel!” Carrie cracked.

“But Mom, what about our house here…” Alex asked. “If we’re gone for up to a year or longer”

“They would be wanting me to start by June 1st if I get the job. I will give notice to my hospital in New Haven, if I get the job and I would try to rent it or I can’t, then Serena and Keith will keep an eye on until we can get it rented.”

“But we would keep it, right?” Alexandra asked.

“Until we know if we’re coming back at the end of the year or not” Beth smiled.

“When do we leave?” Carrie asked.

“I have to confirm flight reservations, but likely tomorrow” Beth sighed as the twins came towards her and she embraced and she found herself believing for the first time that this might work out for them and that she was making the right decision because she needed to protect her kids, and she needed them to be in the same State regardless of what it meant for her and Max. “So, you should go get your stuff and we’ll head home.”

The twins quickly bolted upstairs, leaving Beth and Serena downstairs as Beth couldn’t help but seek advice from their friend. “Am I doing the right thing?” Beth wondered as if she wanted someone to say she is being too rash.

“You said it yourself that the twins need to see their father more, and they have a sister they are only beginning to know and they are at the age that they need both parents to be able to parent them, and you’ve said that Max is going through a hellish time right now and same with Grace. They both need you and the twins close to them. Grace needs you in her life and it isn’t helping you to be across the country and can only talk every other weekend or whenever your schedule allows you time. It will do a world of good for you, as well as Alexandra and Carrie. As I said, they are getting an age where they will need their father in their lives. Max will need your support, and he needs to see his kids.” Serena murmured. “Whether that means anything, I don’t know. But you have to at least try.”

Beth nodded.

“That said, I know you’re taking a risk because of the danger level is high out there, which is pretty amazing to me. So, I know what it means to take the kids back there, but at the end of the day, it will only help the situation by having you back there with the girls,” Serena murmured as she could tell that her friend was apprehensive about the possibility of relocating. “You’re probably at more of a risk staying here… But it’s the decision for you and Max to make. Speaking of Max, have you given any thought of where you and his personal relationship might go if you do take the job and move closer to him in New Mexico?”

“I haven’t begun to, and I doubt Max has either” Beth nodded. “Too much has gone down to even go there…”

“I wouldn’t be too sure,” Serena nodded as she deeply sighed because she might think this was the only out that her friend had but still, she knew it would be life changing. “I am going to miss you though…”

“You’ll have to come visit…” Beth smiled. “The boys will love it, lots to investigate. Lots of caves.”

“We will definitely plan on it,”” Serena smiled as Alexandra and Carrie came downstairs with their bags, and soon they were walking and driving away. Serena watched long after the car drove away from their street as Keith came out onto the porch to bring a drink to his wife who was taking some time under the beautiful evening sky.

“She’s not coming back, is she?” Keith asked as he handed the glass Serena.

“Nope,” Serena said. “She might not know it right now but even if the job doesn’t work out. She won’t be back… New Mexico and the people there will mean too much to her by then… so, I’ll miss her…”

“She’s right, we’ll have to plan a vacation out there…” Keith smiled.

Serena could only smile as they walked into the house and closed the door while Beth and the twins headed home to pack for their newest adventure.

*

While back in Roswell, it was pure chaos as the whole family and clan collected at the hospital. All the kids from the three families were there, as their parents didn’t want to be apart from the kids and not know where they were as the adults were pacing the waiting room. Little Belle was sitting by her grandmother who was on the verge of tears.

Maria was sedated in a hospital room. Michael was on the verge of attacking someone as Isabel kept close to him to try to keep him from letting loose. Max was being family spokesman and lawyer who kept up with the doctors and nurses. Everyone else waited for news.

Elizabeth had slipped into a coma on the way the hospital and was immediately whisked into an operating room to survey and hopefully repair the damage and for hours they hadn’t heard anything which led to Maria’s collapse and the need for a hospital room, and Michael’s insanity.

Once word of the rescue got out, the crowds around the hospital started to grow. Once word got to the high school; they had closed early, and Sue and Finn rushed to the hospital and were now sitting with the family next to Grace as they waited word. Jake hadn’t spoken since arriving at the hospital, and Grace worried about him. He had seen too much and had to endure too much since it had all started Grace knew, and she ached for his pain and loss.

And most importantly her friend who was in agony.

And then the doctor came out with news.

Elizabeth was alive… but…

*

“She’s still in a coma and we don’t know when she’s will wakeup,” the doctor said softly. “We were able to repair some of the damage, but it was extensive and she’s going need a lot of treatment in the weeks to come if she makes it that far” she said to the crowded waiting room. “There is more Mr. Guerin if we you wanted to talk to me privately and I can go into more detail as I understand your wife is resting…”

“Resting is too simple,” Michael grunted. “She needs more than rest. She needs answers. We’re all family, you can say it to everyone if you have anything to say?”

“Mr. Guerin, some of the information is sensitive and private and you might not want everyone to hear,” the doctor said softly as she knew no family wanted to hear such information but in this case, the medical needs were dire and would hard to hear about a fifteen year old girl after such an experience.

“Right,” Michael paled considerably at the news. Grace stood up and knew she should head this off. “Why don’t Sue and I take the kids, down to the cafeteria and get something to eat. Sue, you can help me, right?”

Sue nodded as they collected the boys, Kylie, Michelle and Belle to go down to the cafeteria. “Thank you, Grace,” Jake said squeezing her hand as he got up from the chairs. “I’ll join you in a minute,” he murmured as he guarded his heart and composure for what was going to be said about his sister’s condition.

“Jake is right, thank you Grace” Michael allowed as Sue and Grace collected everyone and headed to the elevators while Finn decided to head home after asking to be called when Elizabeth woke up.

While the adults, and Jake tried to prepare himself for what the doctor would have to say, as the crowd stilled and watched the doctor with interest as Jake approached his father. “I am 18, she’s my sister, so I’m staying”

“Very well,” the doctor said with concern. “To begin, Elizabeth is alive. She is responding and there is hope she will pull through despite her comatose state. Still though her system was put through a tremendous amount of stress, and it’s evident that she found the breaking point at some point, and it’s remarkable frankly that she made it this far” the doctor said as Michael nodded to Max who stood there grimly knowing the fact she would be gone if not for his powers.

“To start, we were able to remove the tubing and wiring, but superficially, she broke her ankle and because it was starting to heal without being treated properly, well, we had to rebreak it and set it so she’s going to be a cast for up to six to eight weeks, and still we don’t know if we were able to treat it in time but we will see how it progresses,” the doctor announced.

Michael nodded and wondered if she broke it when she tried to run, and that is what allowed his little girl to fall back into the claws of a monster. “And…”

“Examination shows that she wasn’t sexual assaulted in the traditional way” the doctor said frankly as the adults looked stunned. “She’s still a virgin, but obviously they were using her for other purposes” as the adults and Jake winced and turned away as the words struck him with force.

“Obviously,” Michael murmured as the doctor continued as his fists clinched in rage.

“The tubing procedures done caused extensive tearing and scar tissue and allowed infection to set in, in numerous places,” the doctor murmured as Isabel winced. “We were able to fix some of the issues but still she’s going to be on antibiotics to clear up the infections… and if they can’t, then we might have to go back in.”

“There was also extensive internal bleeding going on, and it’s quite clear Mr. Guerin if she wasn’t rescued when she was, she wouldn’t have made it… as the attempted cross contamination of her blood caused her system to attack itself and start to shut down. She wouldn’t have made it, and it’s amazing she still even has a chance…”

“What are you talking about blood contamination?” Max asked stepping in for his friend who was about to strike.

“Someone tried to give her blood she wasn’t a match for, and it didn’t mesh with her system and it’s clear it wasn’t the first transfusion of blood. While we were able to get it under control, we had to use a lot of blood to get her to even make it off the table. Whoever did, was treating her like…”

“And object, and like she wasn’t human” Michael murmured through his rage at the thought of what was done to his little girl. “They wanted only one thing, and they would do anything to her to achieve it… or they would kill her.”

Jake couldn’t take it anymore and stormed off, in a fit of rage… and they didn’t stop him and instead of going and joining his girlfriend in the cafeteria, well he found a way through the doors to the intensive care unit and walked the halls. “Sir, you can’t be back here.”

“I belong here, I am family, you can’t and you won’t throw me out” Jake muttered as he didn’t let the doctor stop him as finally found his way and stopped and cried when he saw his little sister barely alive, hooked up to machines and lying so still, pale, and lost to the world.

So not the Elizabeth who was determined to rule the world and take out anyone who got in her way and would fight to the death for someone she loved or do anything to get what she wanted.

“Sis, what did that bastard do to you?” he cried as she stood and watched as she laid so still, so not the outgoing girl they all had gotten endless grief from and now would love to experience just a tiny but of that personality.

“You can’t die on me, please…” Jake pleaded. “I know you think you don’t have any fight left and I know they took something from you and you probably don’t think you deserve to come back but you do so please fight for me and for Mom and Dad. We love you Elizabeth and we won’t be the same family without you so for our sake, Mom and Dad’s sake and for Colin, Liam and Belle and especially for the future you that is just waiting for you to grab… Please fight, and please come back to us…

*

She did fight, as she was still with them a few hours later as Michael and a now awake Maria stood watch and vigil by their daughter’s bedside as Jake climbed the tree and into Grace’s bedroom window and broke down in her arms as they laid in bed.

“She’s so broken,” Jake whispered as they laid in bed together. “They broke my sister…”

“It’s pure evil,” Grace murmured as they fell asleep in each other’s arms as downstairs Max was consulting with his sister.

*

“She was treated like she wasn’t human. They didn’t care she was a girl. Someone who is innocent or who didn’t even do anything to him except exist” Isabel hissed in anger as they sat in the living room.

Colin, Liam and Belle had gone home with their grandparents. Michael and Maria weren’t leaving the hospital and Max knew he could find Jake upstairs in his daughter’s bedroom. Tonight, was one night he didn’t care because there wasn’t nothing to gain after the day the boy had, and he was a sitting duck in his motel room or at the family house.

“He’s sick,” Max muttered.

“Max, I know were probably bad people or people who did the wrong things sometimes on Antar to allow for a coup, but our children didn’t do anything. It’s not their fault that they have us for parents, and to go after them and treat Elizabeth like she was…”

“It’s unconscionable,” Max murmured as his stomach was downright queasy at the memory of the torture he had witnessed. “They were trying to create the perfect sacrifice. The newspaper got it right, it truly was Frankenstein lab. “The were going to use Grace but when she wasn’t available, they went after the second in command’s eldest girl” he muttered. “They wanted the perfect vessel.”

“To try to create a child for Nicholas to offer Khivar to be able to go back to Antar or use Elizabeth as a virgin sacrifice, to build her into the someone who survive on another planet despite her human DNA and human mother so Khivar could use her to get that heir from someone in the original royal bloodline,” Isabel muttered. “Which is why they were trying every other way possible, but you know with time running out they would have gone there if they needed to…”

“Sickening,” Max said as he was sick to his stomach. “This was coldblooded revenge.”

“Yeah, against us…” Isabel muttered.

“For keeping him on this planet. Back when we destroyed those husks and Michael got close to Courtney who sacrifice herself, so he didn’t find out about the Granolith” Max asked.

“Then the Alien Summit…” Isabel remembered.

“He wanted me to do that deal, if it was even a deal” Max thought. “This was pure revenge. It might have started out about Khivar and creating an heir and he was still working on it obviously, but this was about putting a bullet into us, and especially Michael using something he cares most about… his daughter.”

“He got you through Liz, and almost Grace and now he’s after Michael through Elizabeth…”

“Clearly, I am not something he’s feasting on as much anymore because he has a fresher piece of flesh in Michael, and unfortunately in Elizabeth…”

“That is what I am afraid of, does he come back for more…?”

*

Nicholas was planning on it as he stormed around his new hotel room as he surveyed the media coverage of Elizabeth’s rescue. The anger was building. He would not let them win. He would win this, as he immediately made plans and packed.

As he walked smoothly though security at the airport and hopped on a plane out of New Mexico.

Memories of how enticing Elizabeth was, and how much she was a fitting way of getting revenge and now she will be just waiting for him to come back and play with her some more and he couldn’t wait.

I’ll be back he swore. She will want me back…

Yes, losing a child does kill a marriage. Hope Michael and Maria can survive this ordeal.
Poor Elizabeth and the torture she endured.
Glad Grace and Jake found the salt mine.
Hope Max made it in time to pull her through.....and that the coma is not long.
Any good news here??

On the Razor's Edge - Chapter 64 - 12/15/2019

Post by Parker1947 »

Three days later, Elizabeth remained comatose as Grace and Jake were spending all their time by her bedside willing her to wakeup, but her condition stayed the same, extremely fragile and school as falling by the waste side or threatening to. Michael and Maria were meeting with the doctors and signing papers for her medical care if they weren’t with their daughter. Jim was desperately trying to find Nicholas, but it looked like he skipped town. Once that news hit the group, Michael didn’t take that news well. No one really did but Maria stayed at the hospital praying for her daughter to come off the machines but fearing if she did. Max tried to give his goddaughter some of his special dose of help and he thought he was doing some good, but she wasn’t waking up as there was nothing to speak of any improvement in her condition and that caused endless despair for all of them, and especially in her family.

“Mr. and Mrs. Guerin,” the asked as the doctor came into Elizabeth’s hospital room. Michael was looking out the window as Maria was pacing. Jake and Grace were on each side of the bed, holding Elizabeth’s hand. They were all praying because no one had the sense that Elizabeth was truly fighting to come back. They feared her body was just a shell hooked up to a machine which was doing all the work for her, but they prayed for a sign, and something that would bring her back to them so she could truly recover.

“We would like to take her off the machines,” the doctor said as she walked into the room and found dejection in the faces of Elizabeth’s family, and at the news, Maria’s face fell.

“She’s not awake yet,” Maria cried. “You have to give her more time,” she asked as Jake looked at Grace across the bed as she knew this was so much like her own situation just a few months ago, and she didn’t like the up close of a mirror image.

“We think she can handle it,” the doctor asked.

“But you don’t know?” Michael asked as Jake squeezed his sister’s hand tighter and pleaded her to come back to them.

“No, we don’t,” the doctor confirmed. “It’s that we don’t think the machines are helping her at this point, and it might be hindering her recovery.”

“How so?” Grace asked.

“We need her to do the work, and we think she can do it as the longer she’s dependent on the machines, the less she has the ability to fight.”

“We could lose her…” Maria cried.

“Yes,” the doctor nodded. “But she’s already proven the ability to stay with us, so she might have some fight in her. Also Mrs. Guerin, we’ve gotten back the initial toxicology tests on Elizabeth.”

“And,” Michael asked.

“She was heavily exposed to multiple set of drugs during her kidnapping. It wasn’t just morphine, but some heavy combinations that can create a toxic mix in someone who is exposed to those substances for any length of time and then forced to endure the machines to prolong their life.”

“So, you don’t know even if she can come back…” Jake asked as he got up and faced the doctor. “She might be too impaired?” he murmured as he sat back down and took his sister’s hand and squeezed.

“We don’t know until she has a chance to wake up on her own,” the doctor murmured. “The machines are doing the work for her, but they aren’t healing… she has to do that for herself and her system will have need to do the work for her if she has any chance because of the drugs she was exposed to.”

“Can we give her a little more time?” Maria asked.

“A little but it has to be soon,” the doctor suggested. “We want her to be given every chance.”

“Give us some time,” Jake asked of the doctor who nodded and left the room as Michael was seething and Maria was ready to collapse so Jake gave her some comfort and she took it, as she sat down and took her daughter’s hand.

“The bastard drugged the life out of my little girl,” Michael seethed.

“She’ll come back,” Maria insisted.

“Dad can help her come back,” Grace insisted. “He’s already done it once…” But who will she be? Grace and Jake worried together. Grace also knew she had the spirit of Alex to keep her from going to the other side, but Elizabeth had no one, but the memories of what Nicholas had done to her, and all the abuse she had suffered When is it too much?

And that is what was going through everyone’s mind as the decision was made that she would come off the machines that evening after her family had time to visit and say good-bye if she didn’t come back to them.

Then the calls were made to come back to the hospital.

*

Max received the call, and he paused and then turned over in the bed and looked at his wife. “We have to go” he murmured, and it was all he could say because Beth instantly knew of the reason for the call as it had been one she was dreaded receiving and knew it meant one thing only, and neither was prepared for it.

“Elizabeth?” Beth asked she looked around for her robe as she hadn’t meant for this to happen but when they had gotten into the hotel over the weekend. She had called Max and he had come running when he realized Beth and the twins were in La Cruces. Worried that Nicholas would realize this and feeling an intense need to protect them. Especially when he knew that the bastard had managed to go after everyone in the clan, and no one had been untouched. And with Grace spending all her time at the hospital or with Jake at night in her bedroom. He knew he had to protect Beth and the girls.

One thing led to another, and here they were. The twins were in their own room having ordered room service and going to the pool and having a grand time investigating the hotel which they claimed was haunted, so they spent time looking into every nook. Beth had also installed a tracker on the twins’ phones, so they knew where they were always were and mostly the twins stayed in their room watching movies or at the pool with trusty room service on speed dial. Max promised to pay the bill if it kept the twins around the hotel, and they knew something up with their parents, but they didn’t question despite seeing their father coming and going from their mother’s room.

“They are taking her off the machines,” Max said solemnly as his heart cried for his friends. “They don’t know if she has the strength to continue fighting but they want to try…”

“Can’t you do something?” Beth asked as she got into her robe, and Max sat up in bed. “I mean, your gift?”

“I have tried, but she has to want to come back” Max said softly as he thought of the attempts, he done to prod Elizabeth to come back to them. “It can only work if they want come back, or have some life left in them. It did for you. It did for Grace, but I don’t know with Elizabeth.”

“She’s fifteen Max,” Beth said softly as she thought of the twins in the next room. “This can’t be all there is for her story. It can’t be the end…”

“I know,” Max sighed as he leaned over to kiss her as she leaned in. “I got lucky when I faced it with you, and then faced it with Grace and sometimes you only get lucky once, and therefore the devil wins in the end…”

“Then we can’t let them,” Beth said as she looked at the clock and then remembered why she was here in the first place. “But if I do get this job Max…”

“We’ll make it work,” Max promised as he prayed, she did get the job. “I am not letting you go this time, and I am not going to let them get you or the twins. I’ll make sure they are protected Beth. If it the last thing I do, I’ll protect our family because I love you Beth, and I want this chance with you and the kids. We have a rare chance and I am not about to give it up because of our enemies,” he asked as they exchanged a passionate kiss, one fueled of hope for the future.

“If they got Elizabeth…” Beth asked as she wondered if she was crazy for taking this risk on the edge of so much destruction and yet whenever she looked in those eyes, her stomach filled with butterflies and desire shined through “Max, they came after me before. They wanted Grace, what if they realize,” she asked as they tried to lead them back to the reality where they should really be residing.

“I haven’t thought about that yet, but I promise you Beth. I won’t let them get the twins or Grace, or anyone else in our family,” Max promised because he wasn’t about to give up on the greatest thing for his life, and for his families life even knowing that Nicholas wasn’t done with them yet and knew if Elizabeth did survive then the devil would be fixated on coming back and continuing the game.

Because he wasn’t finished.

And the collateral damage would be massive if that were to happen as if it wasn’t already massive Max murmured as he didn’t like thinking that he got his miracle while those he loved got their dreams snatched from them, in the cruelest manner as they got dressed and collected the girls from their room and drove back to Roswell. “I want to try,” he told himself as he knew whenever he looked into Beth’s eyes, he saw Liz, and whenever they were together… things did tend to work out despite the uneasy road getting there… He just prayed that Michael and Maria would have that same miracle.

*

The family collected. Grace had been stunned to see her mother and her sisters arrive with her father, but it wasn’t the time to get into it as Maria burst out crying when she saw Beth and there was a mutual need to be together as Beth went to her friend and took in for a big hug. She might never get those memories back, but she knew Maria was special and didn’t deserve this kind of pain. “You’re not going to lose your little girl” she swore to her friend.

“I fear I already have,” Maria worried.

“No, don’t think that” Beth implored as she nodded to Max.

“Grace did survive, and Elizabeth will too, and the odds might not look good right now, but something tells me even when the chips are down, you can’t count out a Guerin. Elizabeth is special. And she’s going to win this battle, and she’s come back to us” Max sighed

“I hope so,” Maria asked as she wiped the tears from her face as Jake grabbed Grace’s hand as the doctor walked in as Amy and Jim were talking to their granddaughter. Colin, Liam and little Belle were looking at their sister with tears in their eyes. It was suddenly real for them as they got the sense, they could be losing their big sister.

“Are we ready?” the doctor asked, and Michael sat by his daughter’s bedside as he grabbed her hand, and he pleaded for his Sweet drop to wake up. “Come on sweet drop, you need to wake up because we need to see your beautiful face and see what you and Grace will achieve together” as Grace smiled at the idea.

But nothing. No flutters or anything to give anyone the knowledge she was still there…

Maria did the same “Fight Elizabeth, please fight. We are deeply sorry we let the monster get to you, but you need to come back to us and your brothers and sister, as we need you in our lives. So, fight please.”

Crying, she looked up and nodded and the doctor turned off the machine, and slowly took the tubing out of an already greatly irritated throat as they all watched to see whether she continued to stay with them.

Wheeling the machine out of the room, the doctors left the family in with Elizabeth.

She continued to breathe, giving family hope but then moments later her breathing started to labor and start to fade as the crying in the room started to increase as they realized they were losing her.

“Please Elizabeth, stay with us” Jake pleaded with an agonizing cry. “You can’t let the monster win. Battle please, battle and win and we’ll kill the bastard together.”

Just when they thought they had lost her, there was a spike and her eyes popped open and rolled to the back of her head as if she wasn’t looking at them but at image in her mind….

It wasn’t an image, but it was someone who was invading her mind on a loop.

Nicholas taunting her, “You are mine. Do you think your parents will love you after being with me? You are too messed up, and you’re not your daddy’s little girl so succumb to the pain, and come to me…

She wasn’t willing to follow Nicholas’s taunts, but her eyes closed again, and she became less critical… as she battled to come through this, and to win the battle. As she slept, her family and then Finn kept a vigil by her side as she tried to fight to come back to them.

Only in the days to come would she find out that she was changed forever… as it became obvious to her that Nicholas wasn’t ready to let her go.

Yet Finn sat beside her bed and tried to will her to come back and they knew that Nicholas might have had the biggest victory in that this would be a all new Elizabeth they would be dealing with, and no one was prepared for what that would mean.

Not even Elizabeth…

*

Over the next days, the gang stood vigil at the hospital as Elizabeth struggled to recover. Max could see the shell of the people his friends Michael and Maria were now, as they spent around the clock at the hospital trying to will their daughter to come back to them. Jake and Grace also spent most of their time at the hospital, and their participation in end of year schooling suffered as a result but Max wasn’t about come down hard on his daughter because she had been a model student until now and plus if the roles were reversed and they were just weeks before, he knew it would be very hard to him and for Michael and Maria, they had other priorities than keeping track of their son’s graduation slipping away. “I am heading home” Max said softly to his daughter as he saw her about to head into Elizabeth’s hospital room with Jake.

Elizabeth nodded, as Max took a deep breath as he saw Maria in tears nearby. Elizabeth was still alive, but she was not through the worst, and it would continue to be touch and go but Max needed some peace and quiet and to know that he had a chance for some sanity in their lives as he walked out of the hospital, as he was ready to walk to the parking lot where his car sat daily.

His life as a lawyer seemed to be yesterday, and he thanked his father daily for taking the brunt of it. Phillip saw it has no hardship and given the alternative, he always was relieved to be concentrating on something like his law career, when so much in his family was in upheaval and Diane was concentrating helping out, and Phillip used the hours at the office as a distraction and the ability to know he was helping his son.

And then he saw his chance at normal when he saw out of a glimmer of his eye, his soulmate.

Beth smiled as she stood by his car. Her car, a rental was nearby as they had just parked, and saw him. Alexandra and Carrie rushed out of the car and hugged their father. Max took the comfort from the hug as he knew life had a chance to be okay as the twins were like little angels in his life. Rare perfection coming down to tell him it would be alright.

“I thought you had that meeting?” Max asked as he saw Beth approach and knew she had been in Las Cruces with the girls over the last number of days interviewing for the new opportunity.

“I got the job,” Beth said simply.

“You did?” Max asked as if god was giving him something after so much darkness. Alexandra and Carrie giggled as they rushed off, in search of their older sister. Max and Beth made sure to watch as they rushed into the front door that Max had just vacated. They knew where they were always due to the trackers that were still activated.

“You got it?” Max asked as he turned back to focus on his wife “Are you going to take it?”

“What do you think?” Beth murmured as she stood up on her tip toes and gave Max a much-needed kiss.

“As much as I want you here with me, and with Grace and to take this risk together. I think all you need to do is look at Elizabeth and know that being with me is an incredible risk Beth. You are signing up for a life you wouldn’t be getting in Madison. Safety. Maybe we’re wrong and you and the girls are better off across the country.”

“I will never have what I want if I stay in Madison,” Beth said quietly as he took his hand in hers and felt instant relief and the knowledge, she was doing the right thing. “And the danger level will still be there Max, as we won’t be able to eliminate it and maybe it will be even more so if they use us living in different states to for their purposes. I am not naïve, and I know the potential is there but maybe it’s better to be here confronting whatever we are to face, together.”

“What do you want?” Max asked.

Someone who makes me to want something more. My life has been too lonely. The girls need you and I have come to see that even if I don’t get my memory back. I am going too miss out on too much, and I want to see what the future can be. You’re right, we have a chance and we also know the other side of it. We have seen that life is short. We can’t know what will happen tomorrow, so we need to take our chance when we have it.”

Max nodded.

“We did it once, right?” Beth asked with a sly smile. “Whose to say we can’t do it again?”

Max softly nodded if this was a dream come true, and he didn’t know if was real and therefore he took her into his arms, and they kissed as Alexandra and Carrie stood by having stopped and turning back to see their parents and could see that they were in an intense talk.

“What do you think?” Carrie asked.

“I think we just became residents of New Mexico… and that we get have a Mom and Dad who are together, like any other kid” Alexandra laughed as they walked and got into the elevator and headed in search of their sister. Knowing that life was going to be very different now.

While nearby on the other side of the parking lot, a car stopped, and window was rolled down and a blonde stared a still kissing Max and Beth.

The tag on her jacket said, Agent Ava Stevens watched as Max and Beth were kissing. Sighing as she made a note on her pad of paper. “At least that is working out. Memory loss exempted still Nicholas isn’t going to give them a hard time anymore… and now they have a chance for it to work out”

“That is because he’s now focused on the Guerin family, and on Elizabeth?” came the voice next her, that of her partner whose name tag red, Davis. Ava nodded as she focused on Max and Beth, as he saw Michael and Maria Guerin come out into the day light, pale versions of who they used to be and witnessed with a rare smile at the sight of Max and Beth kissing, and when the kissing stopped and seeing their friends looking at them like someone was actually winning in the saga. Beth instantly hugged Maria, who gladly took it.

“Nichola isn’t going to go away?” the partner asked.

“Unfortunately, no, and it’s the damage that will be done by the end of this that is unknown” Ava murmured.

“You know them?” her partner asked. “The Director indicated you go way back with them…”

“It’s been decades since I last saw them and it was only a brief association, but I know one thing. They don’t deserve what is happening to them but then Nicholas will do anything to win…” Ava muttered.

“All to serve his master…” the partner murmured. “And yet he’s almost as brutal as the one he’s supposed to serve. And therefore, it’s going to take everything we have, to even have a chance at taking them down… Obviously from what he did to the Guerin girl, he has learned a lot of dirty tricks over the years, and shown the ability to be brutal to get his own way. And therefore, Nicholas is proving to be a nightmare that will be hard to wake up from Stevens. It won’t be easy to go after him, or to defeat him.”

“Yeah, and who knows who will be left standing in the end or what secrets that will be exposed” Ava murmured as they witnessed Max and Beth walking back into the hospital with Michael and Maria and soon disappearing from their eyesight.

A text came through her phone. “We have a sighting,” Ava muttered. “Let’s get going. Nicholas has been spotted.”

The window went up and the car sped away as they left a very different landscape for Max, Beth, Michael, Maria, Isabel and Kyle and their kids to find their way through to deal with the landmines in the days, months and years to come…

THANK YOU for all your support with this story that has turned into an epic. To those who commented, and to those who were just lurking and reading… I very much appreciate it. However, you came to this story. One more chapter is to come, and it’s more of a prelude to the finishing tale coming eventually… The prelude sees some of the fallout as we see how Elizabeth is doing with her recovery, as it starts to set the stage. Because I sent everything crashing down. I figured Max and Beth need some concrete steps in the reunion that started all this. They are still not completely on safe ground. But they have a much easier chance than others. As you will see in the final chapter to this story, and then in the finishing tale of this trilogy which is still being written and it is messing with my mind. I started something here, that we shall see if I can figure out how to end it. How it all works out will be a challenge for everyone.
