Reunion - Chapter 69 - 7/04/2018

Post by Parker1947 »

"But…but you got her back, right, so there is always a chance, right?" Max asked as despair rang through his core, as the news went around the room, and everyone sunk into their own form of despair. “She’s not gone.”

"There are certainly miracles, but the scans aren't looking promising, and as I said, her response level to the surroundings around or stimuli is extremely low" Dr. Cook said. “I wish I could be more positive but as your daughter’s condition stands now, I can’t really see how she comes through anywhere near where you knew your daughter to be before she was injured.”

"Can I see them, the scans?" Beth spoke up, as she came into the conversation. "I am a doctor, while a pediatrics specialist and not a surgeon at my hospital in New Haven. I would like to know what it looks for her, right now and if I can think of any way she could possibility make through this ordeal?"

"You’ve indicated that you are family," Dr. Cook said. “You’re too close to this situation.”

"Please, if there is anything to help her..." Max asked as his hopes were crushingly evaporating and even though he knew he had his talents, they only worked if there was hope that there was a successful outcome. Neither Liz or Kyle were completely gone when he saved them and while he came back from dust form, still, that was a downright miracle, and couldn’t possibility hope for another such miracle.

“Dr. Cook I promise you as much as it looks strange you I can honestly say that I am not too close to the situation, so I can look at the results of the testing you have done so far with a more impartial eye.”

“Please…” Max pleaded.

"Fine, I'll allow you to view her records." Dr. Cook agreed. “I just don’t see how her situation changes…”

"Where is my daughter?" Max asked as he looked behind the doctor and prayed he could see his daughter, so he could have some confidence of a miracle.

"She's being moved to ICU," Dr. Cook sighed as she checked the chart on her patient. "I do have to warn you that if she's going to be in this state, long-term you might have to make some decisions."

"I want to see my daughter," Max said. "Any other decisions can wait."

"Yes, they can but they will have the be made" Dr. Cook said. "But I’ll leave the official decision for you to make and I’ll go and see that she is stable and able to have visitors.”

"Thank you," Max said as the doctor left as he turned to Liz and leaned in. "Do you think there is a chance?"

"Everyone is different," Beth allowed. "And in my experience the youngest of us are capable of the biggest miracles that might take the lives of others, but I wouldn't pin your hope on my finding something out that could help Grace and first we will want her to settle and any swelling to go down if that is possible. I know this for you taking my advice is extremely odd, but I do want to tell you that when I was in my coma after my crash. It was for two months before I woke up, and if the doctors had seen on day one that I had no hope, and they probably did than they might have allowed me to die and then I wouldn't have had a chance to wake or had to have the twins."

"I can’t imagine being unconscious for two months and then waking up,” Maria muttered at the fact Liz had been out there suffering and unconscious while they were morning her and burying her.

“I woke up to a new world, literally but I did wake up,” Beth admitted.

“So, if she’s breathing on her own, right?" Maria asked, full of hope and refuse to let any notion that her god-daughter might die evaporate.

"Then she has a chance?" Max asked. “In this family, there is always a chance.”

"Yes, but I might have a different view after I see her test results." Beth warned. “But even then, as I said, it would take a lot to dissuade you of having hope because of my own experience.”

"I know," Max said. "But you died, and came back. I died and came back from even less hope than we have now with Grace so if you take precedent in this family as a positive, than our daughter could come back."

"I....." Beth said as she was reminded how complicated this was, and how hard it was to stay unattached, yet it wasn't just her in this question, there was also her daughters. Alexandra and Caroline carried a heavy burden as well even though they were only thirteen years old. "I don't remember any of that."

"I am sorry," Max said as he walked away, and let Beth stare into space as she turned to Maria. "Do you know where my kids are?"

"They were here a minute ago," Maria said as they checked around the emergency room and, yet the twins had disappeared. "I wonder where they went?"

"This can’t be good," Beth sighed as she remembered how Alexandra had found herself here in Roswell on her own, so she reached out to a friendly face. "Kyle, have you see my daughters."

"No, not in the last few minutes. They were here earlier" Kyle admitted as he shook his head as Isabel was looking at Beth with confusion as Beth looked at Isabel. "Do I know you?"

"You did," Isabel said quietly.

"Beth, this is my wife. Isabel Evans Valenti, she is Max's sister and therefore Grace's aunt," Kyle smiled but then frown at the thought of Grace. "Do you think there is any hope for Grace. The doctor doesn't seem to think so," he asked.

"I hope so," Beth admitted. "I hate the idea of anyone dying, and especially not someone with so much of her life still to lead." she sighed and saw the confusion and pain in Isabel’s eyes. "I am sorry if looking at me gives painful memories of a different time," she asked Isabel.

"No, it is confusion and happy shock." Isabel admitted and found she couldn't keep looking at Liz and smiled with a small smile to her husband. “You don’t remember us but believe me when I tell you I am very happy you’re back where you belong. "I know this is a lot for you to deal with so now I am going to check with my mother."

"Go," Kyle encouraged his wife to check on their children and watched as Isabel walk away.

"Maybe I should go collect my children, where ever they have gone to," Beth said as she saw the confusion in the Parker's eyes who couldn't help but look at their daughter while awaiting news on their granddaughter. "I am only causing pain if I stay here."

"Stay, you deserve to stay,"

"Is the cafeteria open?" Beth asked. "I think I need a breather."

"I'll go with you," Maria said nodding to Max who agreed to drop this for the moment and decided to walk over to the Parker's while she headed off to the cafeteria with Beth. "Hey, how are you doing?" Max sadly smiled as he approached his in-laws.

"Max" Nancy said with a small smile as she took him in her arms for a long-needed hug. "How are you doing?"

"Honestly, I am barely holding it together," Max conceding to his in-laws. “I am sorry for all this…”

"Can you believe it," Jeff said as he tried to comprehend how life had changed for their family over the last few weeks. "Why Grace?"

"I haven't even begun to ask that question," Max admitted. "So much is happening that I haven't gone in that direction yet."

"It's really real, isn't it?" Nancy asked. "You were talking to our daughter."

"I am very sorry Jeff, Nancy." Max sighed as he could sense how terrifying this was for Jeff and Nancy as they dealt with their granddaughter being close to death only to look into the eyes of their daughter, who they hadn’t seen in nearly fourteen years and have her not recognize them. "Would you want to talk to her?"

"It can wait," Jeff said. "Just seeing her is enough for now, and with everything going on tonight... it will scare her and wreck any possibilities of a reunion."

"Let's hope because we have her back, we don't lose Grace."

"Don't even think like that," Max said even though he would have to admit that it had crossed his own mind that God could be that cruel and then he was the one who didn’t believe in god, and he was now forced to pray to every god possible to save his daughter.

"It's weird to think of Grace's mother alive, and that she has two other sisters." Sue was asking Elizabeth as they took a walk. Sue had been checked over, and had been told the bruises would heal but she got lucky and then she heard that her mother was stuck in a meeting and that her father would be arriving soon to pick her up. "It’s equally weird to think that Grace could be gone."

"She's not gone," Elizabeth said stubbornly as she was now back on the hope train, and she was refusing to get off. "I refuse to believe that."

"I heard the doctor, and she was pessimistic at best," Sue said. "I know there are medical miracles, but it doesn't seem like Grace is a candidate."

"We won't know that yet," Elizabeth shook her head. "I believe in miracles as my own family has seen them."

"We all believe in miracles, but some are not that realistic," Sue frowned.

"Well Grace's mother is alive, and in the same hospital as her daughter so I think miracles are possible, they just might take some time to come true. It doesn't have to be immediate, but I still believe..."

"Why do you want to believe?" Sue asked.

"Because it's my fault she was in the hospital, as I kept us in the park longer than she should have been before tended to by a paramedic. We might have given her some time," Elizabeth groaned. "So, it's my fault if we can't save her."

"And it's my fault that you two were even there," Sue said.

"No, you didn't ask to be attacked and we were in the same park, and luckily were able to come to your aide."

"I could have fought back, or done something" Sue said.

"No, don't, it's not your fault" Elizabeth said with determination. "That mad man is the one who should be blamed, and you were a victim. Just like Grace wasn’t at fault for what Tommy Ellis did to her, you are not at fault because you couldn’t get away and weren’t able to prevent Grace from getting hurt."

"I know," Sue mumbled as they saw the twins down the hall. "Where are they going?" she asked of the odd twosome that was new to town.

"I have no idea, let's see" Elizabeth advised as they continued to walk, and followed the two girls with this sense that they were up to no good.

*******

Deciding that it was boring in the emergency room especially since all the waiting had grown tiresome and they needed to find their sister and see for themselves if there was any hope because it seemed unfathomable for them to think they could be reunited with their family, how tentative it was and to lose Grace at the same time. Fate was not that cruel, was it? So, Alexandra and Carrie went in search, and had gotten word of where Grace was moved to, so they went in search of their older sister.

Seeing their sister through window, they checked to make sure there was no nurses or medical professional with her, and they then went in...

"She doesn't look very good," Carrie observed as they stood at Grace's feet and looked at their sister who was such an older version of themselves and their mother that it was sometimes creepy to look at her.

Alexandra looked on Grace and wondered whether there was any hope for Grace. Taking her hand, and staring at the girl. "We are sorry if anything we did this to you?"

"We are the blame, aren't we?" Carrie asked.

"If we didn't blast that knife" Alexandra muttered. "Then the guy wouldn't have had a chance of stabbing Grace."

"Well, he could have done worse to the girl Sue if he kept the knife," Carrie allowed. "But we used our powers, and this happened."

"Which we never should have done," Alexandra reasoned.

"But then if we're not the only ones," Carrie asked. "Weird to think of this town, and how much we have seen since we got here."

"Yeah," Alexandra nodded. "We have always wanted knowledge of our heritage, but I never imagined any of this happening."

"Do you think she has a chance?"

"I wish I knew," Alexandra sighed. "God would suck big time if he finally allowed us knowledge of our dad, and then took our older sister from us at the same time."

"He would, wouldn't he."

"Did you see Mom with that man?" Alexandra asked. "It seemed magical to me."

"Yeah, they had a spark, didn't they?”

"I can't think of a time where I saw Mom respond to someone like that before," Alexandra asked as she realized she and Carrie had never seen Mom in a romantical setting with a man during their childhoods. Mom had either concentrated on school, her medical career or them and it was a remarkable to see how much of a connection she had with this man who was very much likely to be their father.

Unbeknown to them as they were talking and while she held Grace's hand, a white glow was being exchanged with the patient and then she felt fingers twinges... she looked at Grace, but her eyes were still shut, but the white glow was continuing...

"What are you doing?" came a horrified voice.

"They wanted Grace?" Kyle was asking his father as they sat in the emergency room. Jim knew he needed to get over the Guerin's and check in on his wife who was beside herself over the drama with Grace, or even to the station to check in on Sue's attacker. He knew he was booked and was in a cell awaiting interrogation. But he found he couldn't leave, so he stayed

"Yes," Jim nodded. "That is what Sue says."

"Why?" Kyle asked.

"I can only think of one reason?" Jim muttered as he thought of the situation. "And won't be easy to hear."

"Khivar?" Kyle asked.

"Yes," Jim nodded. "If he was behind Liz's disappearance, he would be hearing how she has been found and now he's one upped it and gone after
Grace, but his henchman miscalculated and went for the wrong girl."

"And yet achieving his target after all?" Kyle asked.

“He got lucky,” Jim observed.

“Has the girls indicated what happened?” Kyle asked, as they looked over and saw all the teenagers had disappeared which was troubling.

“The gravity of Grace’s situation has silenced them,” Jim admitted but it’s a situation that would have been dealt with at some time soon whether the girls wanted to or not, and he suspected there was more to the situation than a fight to prevent Sue from being killed, or attacked. “How is Isabel handing seeing Liz?”

“It hasn’t been easy especially given the circumstances,” Kyle admitted. “And seeing the twins, and knowing they are her nieces, she never knew about and added to this all the gravity of Grace’s medical status.”

“I actually better get going, as I need to check in at the station.” Jim said checking his watch and seeing how late it was getting.

“We’ll call if anything changes,” Kyle assured his father.

“Thank you. Tell Max I’ll let him know what I find out, and that my and Amy’s thoughts are with him and Grace” as he didn’t see Max or Beth around and wondered if they were off visiting with Grace.

“I will,” Kyle said as he watched his father leave and Isabel approached him. “Hey,” he smiled.

“Hi,” Isabel said with a small kiss and a small hug. “I checked in with the kids, and they are doing well.”

“Good,” Kyle said. “Dad went off to the station before heading off to check in with Amy, where did Max go off to?”

“I think to see Grace,” Isabel sighed. “Kyle this is horrifying.”

“I know, Kyle nodded.

“The Parker’s left, they felt it was better to come back in the morning and see Grace. Kyle to see their confusion, pain, and elation at the same was terrifying.”

“I know,” Kyle said. “They know they could be losing their granddaughter and, yet they see their daughter alive, and she doesn’t recognize them.”

“It’s a made for television moment,” Isabel sighed. “Did you see that moment between Max and …. Beth”

“It couldn’t be missed,” Kyle smiled. “Life can be wonderful and unfair at the same time so maybe we should go home and hug our own children?” Kyle asked. “I figure we won’t know anything more on this front until tomorrow, at least.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.” Isabel smiled. “I think I need the assurance of seeing our kids.”

“Then let’s go,” Kyle smiled and moments later they left the emergency room that looked awfully empty.

*******

“What are you doing?” came the voices again in unison and the twins looked and saw their mother, and Max, and Jake watching them. Elizabeth and Sue were watching also, not far away from the escalating altercation in the hospital room, but they stood and watched with Jake glaring at the girls. Elizabeth shrug and continued to observe. "Girls?"

"Mom," Alexandra asked with a small squeal.

"What's going on?" Beth asked as she and Max walked into the room, and while Jake wheeled in.

"We were visiting Grace," Carrie said innocently and technically they were so she wasn't sure what the outrage was directed at by her mother.

"The glow," Beth asked as she directed the question to Alexandra. "I just saw a white glow."

Alexandra looked down but didn't see anything. "What, I don't see anything. Carrie," she asked.

"Nope, I don't see anything," Carrie smiled. "We wanted to spend some time with Grace, so we came looking for her."

"I gather that," Beth said "I saw a white glow with you Alexandra. Max, did you see anything?"

"I..." Max was caught in a hard place because he had seen the glow. But it was obviously the twins were keeping their powers from their mother. He didn't know what to do because Alexandra obviously had some healing powers, like he did, and he had seen it in action now after being told about it from Michael and Kyle.

Alexandra knew they were busted, and the secret couldn’t be kept, and it was their mother after all "It wasn't intentional," Alexandra admitted as she broke the uncomfortable silence and the long-held pact she held with her sister to keep the secret from their mother. "Mom…. I am not sure you are in any condition for me to confirm or deny, just know I wasn't asking for it to happen."

"Has this…. this happened before," Beth asked as she looked at both twins with new eyes.

"We have managed to be able to hold it as a closely guarded secret for the most part," Carrie admitted. "Alex knows more than I do, and she can do that thing she did with Grace more than I do."

"I don't get what you were doing?" Beth asked.

"It's a healing gift," Max said. "It gives a little oomph to someone who needs help. It can be more elaborate, but you were seeing a small use of it."

"Oh my god," Beth said as it dawned on her. "It's you..." she asked. "You are responsible for all this aren't you."

"Yes," Max admitted "It's part of being who I am"

"Grace is like you?" Beth asked. "Elizabeth admitted as much in the park earlier tonight. Which is why there was a delay getting to the hospital because the young woman was worried what admitted would mean for Grace."

"I didn't know that," Max admitted. "But it makes sense."

"I am sorry Uncle Max," Elizabeth said coming forward after being pressured to come by the glare from her brother. "She was injured, and exhibiting the green energy and I was afraid of what the red flags would be risen if we called the authorities. The twins mother, I don't know what to call you."

"Beth is fine," she said. "That is the name I am as of now."

"She is the one who forced us to call the authorities. If had done it right away, it might not have gotten as bad as it has for Grace. I am sorry."

"It's not your fault. You were worried for Grace, and for you, and your siblings. For the whole clan. I don't fault you. We don't know if the delay meant anything regarding Grace's overall condition. She also faced a delay in traffic."
Elizabeth nodded.

"What is everyone doing in here with my patient," came the voice of Dr. Sam Cook as she entered the room and was horrified that there were so many people in the room. "There are way too many people in here. Didn't any of you see the sign outside. Get out!"

"We're sorry," Max said.

"Out!" Dr. Cook sternly said. "I am going to check over my patient."

*******

Outside the room, in the hallway. The crowd got big as they looked as the doctor tended to Grace.

"There you are Elizabeth," Maria said as she arrived after receiving a text from Jake. "Why do I think you were up mischief?" she asked her eldest daughter. "If not for your brother, I wouldn't know where you went off too."

"Where is Dad?" Elizabeth asked.

"Home to take the pressure off your grandmother," Maria said. "What did she do now?" she asked Max and Beth.

"Nothing," Beth said. "It was my two, not yours."

"Your father is waiting for you Sue," Maria said as she took a breath as she looked through the glass window and saw Grace in the hospital bed, and then sighing she turned and saw her daughter's friend. "He's waiting in the emergency room."

"Thanks Mrs. Guerin," Sue smiled. "I guess I have got to go home and face the music. Elizabeth, I will check in with you in the morning, and if anything changes with Grace let me know okay?"

"I have been asked to escort you, and then Elizabeth and Jake we need to get home," Maria said. "It's getting late."

"I am not leaving," Jake said. "Not without seeing Grace with my two eyes for more than a few seconds."

"You have your surgery in the morning Jake," Maria said as she was reminded that so much had happened on this long and exhausting day, and her son needed surgery in the morning for his leg."

"If you make me go, then I am not having the surgery" Jake warned!

"Why go and be so difficult," Maria asked with an overwhelming sigh.

"I can keep an eye on him," Max said as he knew his friend was not going to persuade he oldest to leave the hospital. "I haven't seen her either, and you know Jake won't be able to sleep. So, he needs to be here anyways in the morning, right?"

"Right," Maria said. "Surgery is at 10."

"I am unlikely to be heading home tonight, so I'll make sure he's alright and if he does want to go home, then I'll drive him."

"That is too much for you Max, with everything you have to deal with."

"It's fine," Max insisted. "You're not going to get Jake to leave the hospital anytime soon, and it seems to be even fruitless to even try at this point.

Dr. Cook won't let us in unless we promise to keep the traffic down, so she might be lenient if it's just us."

"If you think so," Maria sighed. "And yes, you are having that surgery Jake. You're not going to delay it because of Grace so I will let you stay. But be careful, okay?"

"I'm fine."

"Geez.... why do I have to deal with this," Maria muttered as she left with Elizabeth who was reminding her mother that, "you know Mom, I am not going to go to school in the morning. Not with Jake in surgery and Grace here in the hospital."

"Oh yes you are...." was the last words heard before silence descended in the hallway.

"No, she isn't," Jake warned from his chair after his mother and sister disappeared.

"What happened to your leg?" Beth asked.

"Long story," Jake muttered. "But I need surgery to repair my leg because I didn't want to take Uncle Max's help."

"You mean like healing?" Beth asked.

"Yes," Max admitted as Dr. Cook finally came out of Grace's hospital room, and looked at them. "The group has gotten smaller."

"So, I see," Dr. Cook said approvingly of the smaller crowd size.

"So, will you allow us to see Grace?"

"One at a time," Dr. Cook allowed. "And only one at a time. Grace is still the same, but something odd happened since I last saw her."

"What?" Max's breath held.

"Her condition doesn't seem as critical as it did earlier this evening. We have to do more testing, but it does seem like system is starting to respond and what that means for her overall condition, I have no idea."

"Really?" Max asked with a sense of hope creeping into his core.

"Yes," Dr. Cook nodded. "So, I will allow visitors but please remember my rules."

"Thank you, Dr. Cook," Max said. "She will come through this. Grace is a fighter just like her mother is," he smiled with a laugh as he looked with a knowing look at Beth which sent cold shivers down both her arms, and caused the twins looked at each other with wide open eyes.

"Well, let's hope so," Dr. Cook nodded as she wasn't sure what to think of the dynamic between the parents. "I am on the night shift, so I will be here all night until 7 a.m. so if you need me. Have me paged otherwise I will check on her in a couple of hours."

"Thanks again Doctor," Max smiled as the doctor walked away and he turned to Jake whose eyes never strayed from the ICU hospital room. "Go in Jake, and see Grace."

"What?" Jake asked. "Don't you want to see her first?"

"You do it first," Max said. “She would want you to be there.”

"If you are sure?" Jake asked not sure why Uncle Max wanted him to be the first one, but he would take it. "Thank you" he said as he wheeled himself into Grace's room.

"He loves her?" Beth asked.

"Yes, he does!" Max admitted as much as it confused him and wished it wasn’t happening at this time or age for the kids, he couldn’t deny it.

“And you’re okay with that?” Beth asked.

“Hell no,” Max said. “But it’s something that I will have to come to terms with if I want my daughter to be happy and healthy,” he smiled as he was taking it for granted that he would be getting back the Grace he had seen off that morning before the world ended for all of them as it was a better form of denial for Max’s sanity and he was going to hope and pray he would be right.

“Seems like being a parent can be complicated”

“It does, as it’s not always a laugh a minute but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. And hopefully you will be able to come to know Grace.”

“We can only hope we all get that chance to have Grace back in our lives…” Beth allowed due to the confusion of everything that was related to the situation.

“Mom,” Alexandra said which brought Max and Beth’s attention back to the twins who were sitting on some chairs, staring at their mother and Max.

And for Max, seeing the twins were a wakeup call to all he had missed over the last thirteen years. He had seen his daughter grow up into a beauty, but hadn’t seen Alexandra or Carrie through their formative years.

Things seem to be looking better for Grace thanks to her sisters. Now Max needs to add his own healing abilities to the mix.

So much going on........and a lot of confusion
Sue is feeling guilty for being the cause of Grace's condition.
I'm glad the twins found Grace, and that Alex was able to help out some.
It appears that there is a connection between Max and Beth.........
Poor Jake, he's not about to leave the hospital without seeing Grace.
Everything is going in slow motion, but maybe that's what we need at this point.
Thanks,

Maybe between Max and the twins they can slowly heal Grace so that it doesn't look strange.
