Reunion - Chapter 59 - 4/25/2018

Post by Parker1947 »

“You are Grace, you are a waitress here…” Caroline asked as comprehension filled her face as she realized she was staring at their older sister. “Oh, god.”

“I know,” Grace whispered and then pale further when she saw someone approach the table. “Aunt Maria!”

Maria had stayed outside the restaurant to too check her messages and realize she had one from her son to tell her of the doctor’s call, and that she was supposed to call Dr. Jacobs back to confirm the arrangements if the surgery date worked for her, and she was about to when she focused in the restaurant and saw a fire alarm red alert had developed in the restaurant when she saw Grace approaching the table that held Carrie and that moments later Alexandra was joining the duo, and she knew she had to get inside. “Grace!” she said.

“You knew that there was another,” Grace asked as the twins looked at the two with fascination.

“Only recently,” Maria said to comfort the older teen. “I am sorry,” she said quietly to her god daughter. “Carrie and her mother came into town to gather Alexandra last night, and we were just at the police station and the twins were tired, and hungry so I brought them here to get some food before I headed home to Jake.”

The mention of Jake made Grace inner sigh to herself as she tried to gain control of her emotions at the sounds of someone behind her saying, “Miss, excuse me, Miss.”

“Grace,” Maria said quietly. “A customer is asking for you.”

“Okay,” Grace said as she twisted and saw it was Table 2. “I’ll be, right back” she said before disappearing, which left Maria with the twins.

“I am sorry,” Carrie said. “I didn’t know.”

“No, you didn’t,” Maria smiled. “It doesn’t matter. I had forgotten Grace was working this afternoon. She has been off for the last few weeks and she was filling in for a fellow waitress this afternoon.

“So, she’s our sister?” Carrie asked.

“Well she is Grace,” Maria sighed. “I am sorry I have to leave you guys with this, and for me to leave Grace with you guys but my son is needing me at home. Something has come up that has made me have to deal with it, and I would love to stay but I can’t.”

“We understand,” Alexandra smiled. “We have Mom’s credit card, and we’re smart. I am sure she will be here before long.”

“Oh, god, right.” Maria muttered. “She’s coming here to pick you two up!”

“Yeah,” Carrie nodded.

“I need you two to be very careful because if Grace’s still working and your mother comes in, and they see each other.”

“Damn,” Alexandra nodded as realization hits.

“Grace has lived almost her entire life thinking her mother is dead, and while she knows that she is very likely to be alive. It’s still going to be a lot to deal with. But I can’t stay, so you two be careful, and take care of your mother, right!”

“Right,” Alexandra nodded.

“Okay,” Maria sighed. “I have to get going. And I am sure we will be seeing you again soon,” she sighed as she hoped to god Jeff and Nancy didn’t come and join the fun and see what was happening in their restaurant, right below their apartment.

“Good luck with your son.” Carrie smiled.

“Thanks,” Maria said before turning and leaving the restaurant, which left the twins to stare at each other with amazement.

“Wow,” Carrie muttered.

“I know,” Alexandra smiled. “God, when did our lives become abnormal?” she asked.

“I wish I knew,” Carrie asked as she looked over and saw Grace try to throw herself into helping the table she had gone to serve. “She’s our sister.”

“I know,” Alexandra nodded. “She’s looks like a younger Mom.”

“And you,” Carrie observed. “They always say Mom looks like you, more than I do, despite us being identical twins but the two of you look more alike.”

“It is not that close,” Alexandra observed as she watched Grace head for the kitchen and disappear out of their sight.

“But it’s eerie,” Carrie remarked.

“I guess,” Alexandra nodded as they watched as Grace moved around the restaurant. “Weird to think of her old enough to have a job.”

“We are almost at that age,” Carrie said.

“I guess I don’t think of us like we’re growing up,” Alexandra said.

Across the restaurant, Grace tried to immerse herself on helping her tables to distract her from the two-people sitting across the restaurant, which she couldn’t help but give glances to and knew she had to get back to the table and serve the girls, but she was procrastinating. She had felt so good coming back to work, and letting work distract her from the realities of real life and now that was all down the drain.

Sighing and gearing herself up to face the reality of it all Grace delivered an order to a table, and then faced the table that she was dreading going back to, but she did. “Sorry for not coming over, the customers are keeping me busy this afternoon. Did you want to order anything,” she said trying to play the professional waitress that she was most days.

“Two Alien Blast specials, with spicy fries” Alexandra ordered. “Two Chocolate milkshakes.”

“I’ll get that order going,” Grace said.

“We are sorry if our coming here is wrecking with your day,” Carrie asked.

“It’s alright,” Grace sighed. “I have been off work and today was first day back so it’s a little eye opening, but I’ll manage it.”

“What happened?” Alexandra asked.

“I had a medical crisis that took me off my work, then my birthday was last weekend and this place has been going under renovations so my schedule this week was non-existent until today’s shift.”

“You were sick?” Carrie asked as they rarely got sick and she couldn’t think of a time where they needed to see Aunt Serena for a medical need or even have their mother check.

“It was a minor issue,” Grace lied. “It was over quickly.”

“You had a birthday?” Alexandra asked.

“Yes, as it was my sixteenth, and I had the party last weekend,” Grace smiled as she remembered the special night and the memories that came with it and wished she didn’t have the weight of the world on her shoulders just days later.

“Happy Belated Birthday,” Alexandra smiled.

“Thanks,” Grace nodded. “I’ll get those orders for you,” she said and disappeared as quickly as she appeared.

“Wow,” Carrie muttered.

“I know,” Alexandra nodded.

“Jake, where are you?” Maria called as she entered her house and laid down her purse and car keys and called for her son. “I am home.”

“In the den,” Jake called, and Maria followed the voice and walked and saw that her son was nose deep into a text book from school.

So, you had to break a leg to concentrate on school?” Maria asked. “Where has this devotion been all your high school career?”

“I might as well do something since I can watch only so much television during the day,” Jake smiled. “I didn’t mean for you to come home before you were ready. I was just calling you to let you know that Dr. Jacobs needed you to call her back.”

“I was coming home from the library anyways,” Maria smiled even if her words were an exaggeration of what was really happening when she had heard the news. “I checked in with your father on my way back and he’s okay with you having the surgery tomorrow if that is what you want.”

“I need out of this wheelchair as soon as possible,” Jake smiled. “So, hell yes.”

“Okay,” Maria nodded. “I’ll call Dr. Jacobs.”

“Where were you Mom,” Jake asked. “I know you weren’t at the library or if you were, you had already left along time ago.”

“How so?” Maria asked.

“When I didn’t get your phone, I thought I would check with the library given I know you can’t accept calls in the quiet zone that you’ve been known to inhabit when you’re deep in research or in writing, so I called the front desk and they said you weren’t there.”

“Oh,” Maria muttered.

“So, where were you?” Jake asked as he closed his text book and notebook and put them beside him to focus on his mother.

“I was with your grandfather!” Maria said quietly.

“You were at the station?” Jake asked. “Is everything alright with Grace and Elizabeth”.

“In terms of your accident, yes Jim assures us that right now the story is holding, and the Ellis family isn’t making too many waves, yet.”

“That is a relief,” Jake sighed.

“Have you talked to Grace today?” Maria asked.

“No, why?” Jake asked. “I know she had classes this morning and according to Elizabeth, she is back at work this afternoon, so I figure I’ll hear from her eventually, why?” he asked again as he knew that chances are that Grace wouldn’t be calling him as they were both staying away from each other at the moment. Although it’s been a day since the last time he saw her, and he missed her but knew she had a lot of heart wrenching balls in the air and he didn’t need to be another one.

“Her mother is back in town!” Maria said carefully as she wondered how it was going back at the Crashdown. She hated to have to leave but she was needed at home. “I saw her, at the station with your grandfather,” ignoring the fact she is the one who sought out Beth and the twins in the first place.

“She is,” Jake asked as his eyes opened wide. “Wow.”

“Yeah and I was at the Crashdown when I got your message and Grace is getting to know her two sisters.”

“Wait, what. Two sisters. I thought it was only one.”

“Two,” Maria muttered. “And that what Grace thought too before the twins appeared at the Café at lunch.”

“Oh, god.” Jake said as he grabbed his cellphone. Twins he thought. Wow. “How is Grace handling it?”

“It’s a shock, but I had to leave to come home and see you because of Dr. Jacob’s call.” Maria sighed.

“Two sisters?” Jake asked.

“Yes,” Maria nodded. “Alexandra and Caroline Evans.”

“Oh, god.” Jake said as he checked his phone and saw no text or email from Grace, so he figured she was still dealing with the nightmare situation. “I can’t imagine what she’s dealing with.”

“Me either,” Maria sighed. “I guess I have to check with Dr. Jacobs, call Grace if you want. I’ll be in my office.”

“Okay,” Jake nodded as his mother left the den and her son was left to wonder what in the hell was happening their lives. All of them had been uprooted in the last few weeks, ever since he and Grace left state limits for a carefree rebellious weekend. “What in the hell is with our lives?” he muttered to himself.

“Hey Grace, call me or text me when you get off work. I want to talk, I know you have had a hard day but know I am here for you. I don’t want you to worry, what happens, happens, and we can deal with it as slow as you want so just call me and we can just talk,” Jake said as he dialed Grace’s cell phone and left a message.

Sighing to himself Jake wheeled himself out towards the kitchen.

“I better go and collect my girls,” Beth was saying as she got up from the chair she had been sitting in for what felt like an eternity. “I know it doesn’t feel like it, I am thankful for all you have been doing to help me and my girls.”

“Hey, it’s alright,” Jim smiled at Beth although it hurt to look at her and see the Liz from her teenage hood and yet not be able to be vocal with that happiness as he had to take it easy, and handle it with care. “I am just grateful that you are able to achieve some closure.”

“I just wish it wasn’t so hard.”

“I know,” Jim sighed. “But life is like that sometimes,” he smiled as they got up and walked to the door. “Do you need company?”

“No, I think I can handle it.” Beth smiled.

“If you need anything, my station is at your command.”

“Thank you,” Beth smiled again.

“You have a great day Beth,” Jim said biting his tongue and the urge to say Liz.

“I do appreciate you calling me Beth,” she said.

“It’s what you identify with,” Jim said. “I know this is hard for you coming into a life you have no recollection of.”

“It has its moments,” Beth admitted.

“You will find those answers you want and one day it will all make sense and you can claim the life you want.”

“Even if it’s Beth’s life and not Liz’s life,” she asked as her final words and that was what Jim was forced to ponder.

“I hope to hell it’s not,” Jim said silently to himself as he watched through his window as Beth left the station. “But if it is, Max and Grace will deal with it as only they can.”

“How does it feel the idea that you have more children?” Michael was asking his best friend as they sat in Max’s law office. Michael had taken a break from his office and the paperwork he had been forced to indulged in now that he was back home and at work, and was checking in with Max who he knew was feeling the world. “It can’t be easy.”

“I don’t think it’s hit me, yet!” Max admitted as she struggled to deal with the mere idea of it as he was having difficulty grasping the reality of the situation. “Liz and I wanted more children, and we almost did have another child but the idea that it really did come true yet in such a tragic way is beyond comprehension.”

“I am sorry for keeping it from you,” Michael sighed. “I would have told you if I had known.”

“You had to check on it and I understand that, and I appreciate you and Kyle for doing it for me and Grace. Given the scope of the deception that has been undertaken to simply accept it and come to me and Grace and then for it turn out to be a hoax, it would be ten times worse, so I am glad you wanted to check it out before telling me or Jim did.”

“It definitely was a shock to the system,” Michael said. “Jim didn’t tell us in advance. He wanted the shock value for us, given we are so close to you and were so close to Liz back in the day. He only had me look up a Beth Evans.”

“And you found discrepancies?” Max asked.

“Oddities for sure,” Michael admitted. “I didn’t know about her crash because I didn’t go deep enough but I turned up enough to know that Beth Evans didn’t exist before November of 2008 when she applied to change her identity, and to get the official papers to take on that identity and to start her education”

“She went on to become a doctor?” Max asked.

“Yes,” Michael nodded. “She began to take classes at Yale University, and then moved onto the medical school relatively quickly and eventually was able to certify as a pediatrics specialist.”

“All while taking care of her daughters?” Max asked.

“Yes,” Michael confirmed. “The twins, Alexandra and Caroline were born on Halloween, 2008, early, but in relative good health that that only needed a few weeks of hospital care before being released to their mother who had been on hospital bed rest from the time she woke up to shortly after the delivery of the babies. She was released in early November, after some rehab and then she began to get her life together to raise the babies.”

Max’s heart broke as he heard Michael’s recitation of the facts of the case, and the fear and the feeling of isolation his wife must have felt in those days, all alone, and having to carve out a new life for herself and the babies. “God, I can’t imagine her doing it so alone.”

“Me either,” Michael admitted as he couldn’t help but imagine it too. “She had her best friend Serena, who she had found in the hospital but the notion she was all alone.”

“And the twins, you said they have powers.”

“Yes,” Michael admitted.

“Kyle saw it in Carrie,” Michael sighed. “She accidently injured herself and rapidly healed herself but not fast enough that Kyle didn’t become wise to it, and we know that Alexandra has some mighty powers herself although we haven’t seen them in action. But when she hitched all the way here from back home, we know she manufactured some tickets to get through the airport, and bus station in El Paso.”

“Which we were known to do back then,” Max observed.

“Yes,” Michael admitted. “Which can only mean one thing.”

“Liz is alive, and I am the father of the twins.”

“Yes,” Michael nodded.

“Can we get another burger and fries,” Alexandra asked Grace as their waitress came back to the table to ask if they needed anything more once their orders came to the table. “The same as our previous order.”

“Sure,” Grace nodded as she vanished again as it was still too surreal at her to actually look at the twins in the booth and she quickly departed as often as she could.

“For who?” Carrie asked her sister as she took a bite of her fries and a drink of her milkshake.

“Mom should be here anytime now,” Alexandra observed. “And maybe we can intervene from her coming in.”

“You don’t want her meeting Grace?” Carrie asked.

“She has had a lot for today, maybe both of them need time, and not to force it like it was with us. Grace has already gotten enough shocks today with her finding out there is you.”

“I guess,” Carrie said as they finished up their meals and paid their bill and took the container with them as they went to the back door, and turned and Alexandra walked over to Grace who still was looking pale. “I know this is a shock for you. But know if you do want to talk. We are here, and we’re staying over at the motel down the road.”

Grace nodded, and watched the twins leave the restaurant and moments later she spotted them being approached by a dark hair woman, and her heart beat rapidly when she made the connection.

It was her mother.

“Mom is alive,” she weakly admitted to herself.

OH MY GOD!!!! Wow Grace had a hell of a shocker. Grace just found out she has 2 sisters. At least Grace is getting to know Alexandra and Carrie. It seems Max is taking the news good. Oh wow Grace just saw her mother. Wonder when Grace and Max are going to see and talk to Beth/Liz. Hoping Max and Grace will see and talk to Beth/ Liz before they leave to go back home.

So Maria left the twins at the Crashdown to take care of her son.......
It's so good to see the sisters getting acquainted with each other.
It appears that all of this really hasn't hit Max yet.......almost too much to take in.
Now Grace knows her mother is alive........
Thanks,
Carolyn
