thank you so much for all that amazing fb!

Just a little fun fact, Helen and Matthew are my grandparents in real life, they are up in heaven but obviously very much still here with me in my heart. :)

Also my amazing, sweet daughter turned twelve yesterday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEANUT, I LOVE YOU! :D

~ Run ~ by Snow Patrol

I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

Slower slower
We don't have time for that
All I want's to find an easy way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart, my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Chapter 11.

An expression of confusion mixed with sadness covered Max's face as he sat down in the chair that Matthew quietly pushed beside the bed.

Helen looked pale and very tried, she was a far cry from the vibrant colorful woman Max was used to.

A lopsided tiny smiled appeared across her thin lips as she removed the oxygen mask from her mouth.

With just a loving look towards Mathew he immediately responded somehow knowing exactly what she needed.

Pushing the bed controls he lifted her head so she could see Max comfortably.

Her golden eyes still sparkled with emotion and kindness as she reached out for Max's hand.

Her voice was a raspy whisper at best sometimes slurring as she began her tale.

“Max, I am your grandmother.”

His eyes widened with shock then disbelief as he glanced back towards Liz almost looking for help.

“But Helen that's impossible...my father ….he would've told me.”

Taking a minute to catch her breath Helen stared back at Matthew who responded with a slight nod encouraging her to continue.

“Oh honey, remember I told you that things weren't always as they seemed?”

Another heartbreak glance back up to Matthew revealed that she was just too weak to continue.

Clearing his throat Matthew brushed her red hair from her tired eyes.

“It's alright darling, you've done enough, I'll take it from here.”

Tears flooded her eyes as she looked back at Max.

It was more than obvious that they had a love story of their own.

“Max your mother didn't want to leave you, she loved you. She loved you with all her heart.”

Clearly upset Max shook his head and stared at the ground.

“No disrespect to you both but my mother left me when I was two years old. She never loved me.”

A firm grasp on Max's shoulder caught his attention as Matthew deepened his voice.

“Son, that couldn't be further from the truth. Your mother had cancer, she was very ill. She knew your father was abusive and she couldn't bare the thought of him raising you alone without her there to protect you. So at the end she went to a lawyer and explained her situation. She wanted Helen to raise you...but ...”

Max rested his head in his hands as the truth washed over him.

Liz emerged from the corner and stood behind him wrapping her arm around his chest protectively.

“I'm so sorry Max.”

Resting his hand over hers Max gazed down at Helen.

Taking a deep breath she slowly continued where Matthew left off.

“Oh my dear Max...it is true. My daughter loved you with all her heart. She went through the proper channels, but your father heard about what she was trying to do. His best friend was a policeman. He told the judge that your mom was extremely ill and delusional. We had no money for a lawyer and no way to prove our case...so...”

Max wiped away a stray tear and looked to the corner of the room.

“So he told me that she just took off and left me...that she never cared about me at all.”

Anguish materialized in her amber eyes as she gripped his hand.

“Sweetie, it made him furious that she wanted me to raise you. He came to me and threatened to take you away forever if I said anything.”

After a long thoughtful pause Helen pulled him closer.

“I had already lost my daughter, I couldn't handle losing you too. Seeing you grow up, watching you from a far ...at least then I knew that you were alright.”

Liz knelt down and rested her head against his shoulder feeling his pain as if it were her own.

“So, my mom...she's ...gone? Where is she...I mean is she buried in town.”

Matthew spoke up again rescuing Helen once again.

“She was laid to rest in a cemetery about an hour from here, out in Cornwall. Your father was very hush hush about it. Not that many people knew exactly what happened, and those that did I guess decided a long time ago that it wasn't their business to get involved.”

Tucking her hair behind her ear Liz looked up at Matthew with curiosity.

“Forgive me for asking Matthew but how do you fit into all this?”

His grey steel eyes softened slightly as he brushed his lips against Helen's forehead.

“Well you see Helen is my girl, always has been since we we're kids. We were the same age you two were when you first met. It was love at first sight...right darling?”

Helen nodded slowly with great passion in her eyes.

“We were madly in love, then one day my father came home and said that we were moving clear across the country. Being all of seventeen I marched down to Helen's father and asked to have her hand in marriage.”

Puzzled Liz looked back at Helen completely enthralled in their story.

“I don't understand, you two aren't married ...are you?”

Sighing lovingly towards Helen Matthew shook his head.

“ Helen was their only child, daddy's little girl, I guess he thought he was doing the right thing us being so young and all. You see he told me that Helen was in love with another boy in town, a good friend of hers. I was so heartbroken I couldn't even face her, that night I left with my parents. It was close to fifty years till I would see that beautiful face again.”

Suddenly Liz stood straight and stared at Helen.

“You knew ...didn't you? You knew about what happened with Max's father. That's why you were always around asking me questions, trying to help Max. You didn't want Max making the same mistake Matthew did so long ago.”

A small smile once again pursed her lips as she stroked Max's fingers.

“That's a very smart girl you have there.”

Max struggled against a tide of emotions, his husky voice deep with sadness.

“How did you know?”

Helen paused, her eyes glinted to a picture on the wall over Liz's shoulder as if she was revisiting a period of time she would rather forget.

“The night it happened he showed up at the motel drunk out of his mind. He confessed everything, he even cried a little, but the anger came back when I told him I had to tell you. He threatened me again, told me I’d never see you again but I knew this time I had no choice.”

Hearing her voice beginning to fade Mathew lowered the head of the bed and fixed her pillow.

“She tried Max, but you had already left.”

Helen's voice became almost breathless as she covered her eyes with her shaky hand.

“That was right after Harry and the ...children...”

Matthew hushed her lovingly and whispered in her ear.

“That's enough my sweetheart....I'll tell him the rest. Just rest now.”

Taking a seat beside Max, Matthew rested his trembling hand against his cheek.

“You remember the accident Max. You remember how Harry and her two boys passed tragically in that car accident. After your grandmother was broken, she didn't have the strength to go off and look for you, but she never stopped loving you, never stopped caring.”

Tears spilled over her drawn face as she squeezed Max's hand reaffirming what Matthew had just said.

Again Liz spoke as she held tightly onto Max.

“Wait I'm confused, those boys were so young, and Helen was only married once.” A quiet gasp left Liz's lips as everything became clear. “Your Max's grandfather ...aren't you Mathew?”

Max's eyes flashed to the elderly man who was looking fondly into his grandmother's eyes.”

“I didn't know it at the time but Helen was pregnant when I left. I missed out on raising our daughter together and a lifetime of memories with the woman I loved because I was too insecure, I couldn't believe that someone as beautiful and kind as your grandmother loved me. I was a foolish boy with foolish thoughts and everyone paid for my mistakes in the end.”

Helen shook her head slightly pleading with her fading eyes, forgiveness overflowing in her heart.

Liz brushed away tears as she pushed for more.

“How did you find her again?”

“I was retired, never married, I guess I just needed to go home one more time. I just wanted to see her, make sure she had a happy life. It was like not a day had passed, she was just as beautiful, so full of life , my girl. It was then that she told us of our daughter and ….of course you Max.”

A painful smile flushed his face as he looked down upon her.

“We had six magical years together ...didn't we darling?”

A single nod was all the energy Helen could give as the alarms on the machines surrounding her began to go off.

Max and Liz backed away giving room for the nurses as they disabled the monitors.

Just then Max rushed to her side taking her hand and resting it to his heart.

“Thank you for everything you did, you saved my life Helen. I ...I love you.”

Her lips trembled as she mouthed the words back before the nurse escorted them away leaving Matthew to say his goodbyes.

Turning to Liz, Max collapsed in her arms and buried his face in her hair.

“My mother loved me Liz, she never wanted to leave me.”

Suddenly it became clear to her why Max had left so long ago.

Her eyes slid shut as his husky tone whispered in her ear the words she had longed to hear for so long.

“I'm so sorry Liz. I love you ….“

“ ... I will love you forever if you'll let me.”

Chapter 12

"Tonight, Tonight"~ by the Smashing Pumpkins

Time is never time at all.
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth.
And our lives are forever changed.
We will never be the same.
The more you change the less you feel.

Believe, believe in me, believe.
Believe that life can change.
That youre not stuck in vain.
Were not the same, were different tonight.
Tonight, so bright.
Tonight.

And you know youre never sure.
But you're sure you could be right.
If you held yourself up to the light.
And the embers never fade in your city by the lake.
The place where you were born.

Believe, believe in me, believe.
Believe in the resolute urgency of now.
And if you believe theres not a chance tonight.
Tonight, so bright.
Tonight.

We'll crucify the insincere tonight.
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight.
We'll find a way to offer up the night tonight.
The indescribable moments of your life tonight.
The impossible is possible tonight.
Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight.

Liz laced her fingers into his shaky hand as they stood at the crest of the hill overlooking his mother's headstone.

A beautiful orange glow from the fading sun lit his handsome face as he peered down onto the modest memorial dedicated to a woman he had never known.

While one hand clutched Liz's supportive fingers tightly the other held a bouquet of white roses.

Standing there it was very apparent that he needed a moment to take in the reality that had unfolded before him only three days before.

Leaning her head against his shoulder she held his arm close to her body as emotions began to well up inside him.

“Matthew seems to really care about you Max, I'm so happy you're going to stay in touch with him.”

Nodding slowing Max continued to stare down at the modest small tombstone.

“Me too, he'll be moving back home now that Helen is gone, but we are determined to talk as much as we can. There's just so much I don't know still, maybe he'll be able to fill in the blanks for me.”

Liz silently nodded as a very important question of her own refused to leave her alone.

It had been such an emotional roller coaster for Max so she thought it was best not to push him on where they stood, but his words in the hospital kept haunting her.

“I'll love you forever... if you let me.”

“How is it going with your father's estate? Will they be needing you much longer?”

Shaking his head Max released her hand to brush some stray grass away from his mother's name.

“No, the house went up for auction and sold quicker than they expected, all the other loose ends can be tied up over the phone I'm told.”

Liz ran her fingers along the back of his thick black hair and closed her eyes.

They had spent the last three days in each others arms making love locked in her apartment, she didn't feel right making any demands but at the time they still had unresolved issues to work out and it was beginning to wear on her.

He seemed changed since he has first arrived in town, she could feel the difference in him since he discovered the truth about his past.

He was calmer, more at peace with himself and others around him.

Especially with her.

His affection for her could only be matched with the guilt he still carried for how he left so long ago.

Max treated her like something precious that he had only recently discovered, something to be handled with great care and love.

Something to be cherished, it was a feeling she could quickly get used to.

His anger had diminished greatly, partly because of the love he felt from his grandmother and grandfather and partly knowing that his mother truly cared for him and tried so hard to protect him.

It was as if he found a missing piece to a puzzle that he had been searching for his whole life.

He was finally free from his father's grip, he no longer had to exist under the lies that had tormented him his entire life.

Resting now on his knees Max gently laid the flowers down along side her name and pressed his palms to the cool stone.

“She would be so proud of you Max.”

His teary eyes slid shut as he felt Liz's warm soothing hand on his shoulder.

Nothing had ever seemed so clear to him in his entire life then this moment standing in that cemetery as the sun disappeared over the hillside.

“No, she wouldn't Liz, not yet anyway, but I'm hoping to change all that.”

Liz gazed down at him confused as he stood reaching for her hand.

“Come on lets take a walk, I think we should talk.”

After making their way down a tree lined path about a mile and a half from the cemetery he brought the back of her hand to his mouth and kissed her gently.

Liz gasped softly as the narrow path widened leaving the tall bushy trees behind to look out onto a mile of sandy beach and a beautiful ocean.

“I had no idea this was here.”

Max watched as the moonlight danced off the crashing waves like the fireflies that used to chase her in the meadow when they were young.

“Not many people do, its not open to the public.”

Quickly Liz kicked off her shoes and ran to the shore reveling in the cool water drifting over her toes.

“How did you find out about this place?”

He smiled widely watching her skip and twirl ankle deep in the rushing water, it was as if she were sixteen again so pretty and full of life.

“Matthew...I mean my grandfather told me about it, he said it was very special, he said it held a certain kind of magic.”

Liz spun around holding the hem of her pink sundress high to her thighs with a mischievous bright smile across her glossy pink lips.

“Magic?” she let out a giggle that lifted Max's heart above the sadness of the past few days. “What kind of magic Max?”

Kicking off his shoes and socks he joined her in the sea pulling her close against him.

“Well apparently if you stare out into the ocean and make a wish, its supposed to come true.”

Biting her bottom lip she smoothed her hands up around his neck and gazed into his eyes.

“Oh really?”

Turning on her heel she clasped her hands together and looked out into the turbulent sea blanketed by a thousand stars.

Raising her chin in the air she took a deep breath as she released a heartfelt wish out into the universe.

Standing there facing the crashing waves with her silky raven hair dancing across her face, one thin pink strap down against her tan arm with her delicate hands pressed together against her chest she looked like an angel.

He wondered briefly in that moment if she had any idea just how incredibly beautiful she was.

Satisfied that enough time had gone by she turned once more to him stepping flush against his hard chest, her face tilted up towards his thoughtful honey eyes.

Her smile disappeared as a serious expression washed over his face.

Brushing away a stray curl from her lips he cupped the side of her cheek and gazed pensively down towards her.

His deep raspy voice was full of emotion and sincerity as he spoke intensely staring into her wide eyes.

“Liz, I want you to understand why I left so long ago, why I rushed to judge you so unfairly.”

Shaking her head vigorously she pressed her finger to his lips.

“Max its all right, its in the past - “

Moving her hand away from his mouth he caressed her jaw with his thumb and pressed his forehead to hers.

“It's important to me that you understand, please let me get this out.”

Her voice softened to a whisper surprised by the magnitude of his tone, it was clear he was speaking from the heart.

“I'm listening.”

“Liz, I don’t think you have any idea how special you are, from the day we first met as children you were so kind and selfless, your beauty runs way deeper than your truly stunning exterior. It never made sense to me that someone like you would want to be with me.”

She immediately averted her eyes away from him trying to hide her blushing cheeks as she looked down to the crushed shells of the sand below.

Lifting her chin tenderly up towards his beseeching stare he gently pressed his lips to hers leaving it impossible for her to turn away again.

“I never felt deserving of you Liz... actually... it was more than that, to be honest I lived in fear that you would someday leave or find someone else.”

His anguish over what he had done was painfully obvious as he continued to gaze into her loving brown eyes.

“I always believed that deep down there was something wrong with me, something that would make a father hate his only son, and drive a mother away from her home and family.”

Her eyes filled with tears as that innocent little boy who appeared in her backyard so long ago shone in his pained expression.

“It was wrong that I didn't trust you, that I didn't have faith in us. To think that I didn't protect you, that you suffered at the hands of that monster while I just left like a coward....its almost too much for me to handle. Looking back I know now I was just running away, trying to escape what I thought was an inevitable end for us.”

Sweeping his bangs from his eyes she shook her head. “Max, I loved you, I never wanted to be apart from you.”

“Liz you have to understand how I felt back then, if I wasn't good enough for my own parents how could I possibly be good enough for someone as perfect you.”

She giggled softly at the words he used. “Max, I am far from perfect, but my love for you is something you never need to question.”

Tilting his head touched by her words his tone became deep and raspy punctuating every line.

“The boy back then didn't have the strength to believe that, all I ask is that you give the man standing before you a chance to make you happy.”

Cupping both cheeks in his big hands now he became breathless as he took her lips once again.

This time his emotions took over igniting a fire deep within him.

Liz rose on her toes melting into his impassioned embrace lost in the sounds of his soft moans and the touch of his gentle hands on her body.

Parting suddenly he began to step back onto the beach pulling her along with him with an urgency that seemed overwhelming.

It was then that she felt her hand being tugged downward that she noticed he had gone down on bended knee.

“Max? What ….”

Kissing her hand he closed his eyes as if wanting to burn this moment in his mind forever.

Liz was still in shock as he reached in his back pocket and pulled out an oval diamond set high upon a simple thin band.

“Liz, I know its been years since we've been together, and I know I have so much to prove to you, but I want to try. I want to show you that you can trust me, that I'll never leave again, never distrust you, never ….hurt you.”

“Max - “

“I know this is sudden, and rash and well a little crazy but my grandmother taught me never ever let love slip away. Her and Matthew wasted a lifetime, I've already let precious years pass by. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.”

“But Max - “

Pulling her down to the sandy beach with him Max kissed her again afraid to hear her response.

“You don't have to answer me this minute or even a month from now or six months from now. I just had to make it clear how committed I am to us and how much I love you. I just want to be with you. Just please tell me that you'll at least give us a chance.”

Laughing now Liz pressed the tips of her fingers to his lips halting his plea.

“Max, although I don't deny that we need time, being with you is all I've ever wanted.”

Smiling bright up at him she took the ring and held it up to the moonlight.

“It's beautiful, absolutely perfect and someday when were ready I want you to give it to me again.”

As for right now I'm going to need you to make love to me under the stars on the shore on this amazing ocean.

Breathless and beaming with happiness he pulled his shirt off and laid it on the ground for her.

Hovering over her he traced the line of her jaw with his fingertips melting under the love that shone bright in her big brown eyes.

“You know, my grandfather was right about one thing.”

Leisurely skimming her fingers down his muscular chest she sighed happily.

“Oh yeah, and what was that?”

Brushing his lips against her throat he whispered softly caught up in a moment he would never forget.

“This place really is magical.”

Pulling in her bottom lip her eyes flashed up towards him in wonder.

“Really, how is that?

Finding his way to her lips again to kiss her he whispered softly before honoring her request.

“I made a wish tonight, and because of you...it came true.”
