@ Eve: Exactly! You nailed it! About the ice queen attitude, are you up for more?

@ Carolyn: Yes, the puzzle is slowly falling in its place. Our group will have to take actions, no matter what. It’s their only chance to save Emily ànd build a future for their own. Something they had never believed in. But one at the time, they’re encountering their counterparts and they start dreaming just like everybody else on this planet: a partner who cares and loves them, building a future together, maybe even raise children,…

A/N. Like usual, I’ve got some references to the real thing. This time from “Sexual Healing”.

Chapter thirty

The air blew her hair around. The engine of her car made overtime, blaring loudly while she cut around the curves with too much speed.
She couldn’t think straight anymore. The blood in her veins kept pumping at a high rate, trying to get her emotions back in check. But no matter how hard she tried, she failed miserably. Worry combined with rage and disillusionment fuelled her emotions over and over. Her head hammered wildly, like she had a gang of kobolds in there who were splitting her brain into a billion pieces.
It made her reckless. Her feet stayed persistent on the gas pedal, pressing it even harder than before. A mist of tears clouded her vision for just a second. And as always, that second was crucial.

Her inattention allowed her car to skid but her reaction was quick. Grabbing the steering wheel with both hands she tried to take the control back by throwing the wheel in the opposite direction. The blood in her fingers was pulled away while she squeezed the wheel with every ounce of strength she had. But she couldn’t stop the car from skidding further. At a high speed it spun over the street, straight towards the bushes to park it right against a tree.

Her head hit the wheel in front of her. But in the adrenaline of the moment she didn’t feel a thing. “Damn it!” Angry she slammed her hand against her steering wheel before slumping her head against it in total despair.

“Are you hurt? Miss?”

“No, no, not him.” she growled under her breath. Could her day get any worse?

Tired she closed her eyes, hoping that it would all disappear. Shaking it off, just like a bad dream.

“Isabel? Isabel, is that you?” he asked when he recognized the profile of the blond woman lying senseless in her car seat.

“Damn it” he cursed out loud when she didn’t respond to his question. His heart raced like hell now, pounding out a jagged rhythm. He could almost hear it thud against his ribs.

Alex had seen the car speeding at an insane rate from miles away. Even minutes before the actual accident, he had seen it coming. “Idiot” he had jeered at the driver when he had lost control of his car. It took him nanoseconds to throw his bike to the side of the street and to rush to the irresponsible jack-ass of a driver. Or at least, that was what he thought before his insults vanished away after one look at the gorgeous woman.

With one jerk he yanked her car door open and started to check her out. When his hands tried to examine her pulse at her neckline, she shoved them away.

“I’m fine!” she brushed him off.

“Are you sure?” he persisted. She sure didn’t look right to him. Not at all, as a matter of fact.

“Yes!” Isabel yelled before adding a softer “No!” She looked up at him, right in his eyes. “I don’t know anymore.”

Alex could easily read the sadness in her features and it crumbled his heart. “Come on, get out of the car.” He ushered her out while offering her a hand.

But when she ignored him, he lost his temper. “Isabel. Get. Out. Of. That. Car. Now! Before I pull you out.”

His anger awakened her. “Fine!”

With exaggerated movements she unbuckled her safety belt. She tilted her head up and Alex saw her changing before his eyes. She straightened herself up, fierce and arrogant, while her jawline hardened and the look in her eyes went cold. Her body language screamed at him to leave her alone.

He knew she was playing her ice queen card again but this time he wouldn’t let her. This time Alex knew that she was hiding behind a fake posture, hoping to get rid of him. He grabbed her by the arms and forced her to look at him. “I’m not a fool, Isabel. Don’t fucking play with me! I’ve got eyes in my head and I use them. Don’t pretend that you’re alright when you’re clearly not. Not to me!”

Although his voice rose with every word he was throwing at her, she didn’t see a spot of anger in his eyes. The compassion she read in them confused her. Why would he care a thing about her?

In a last effort to convince him, she bit out, “Get out of my way. I’m doing great!”

Alex admired the way she stuck to her guns but he could play that game too. Hell, he had even mastered it. So he snickered. “My ass! I saw you driving like you were on a suicide mission. Oh yeah, you’re doing great!” he mimicked her last words.

“Let your act go, Isabel,” he demanded calmly. “I see right through it and what I find there isn’t pretty. You’re hurt.” Softly he touched the bump on her head.

But she brushed him off again. “It’s just a scratch. It’ll heal.” Or it will be healed later. Stubbornly she kept glaring at him.

“It’s not what’s hurting you and you know it.”

Isabel felt her strength crumble as he cornered her with her back against the wall. Normally she could blow nosy people away with a blink of her eye. But apparently normal didn’t apply to Alex. Outside of Michael he was the first man who could match her determination. The way he took a firm stand surprised her and attracted her at the same time. But it drove her up the wall too. Like a hunted down deer she did the only thing she could think of: flee.

“Forget it!” She yelled at him just before running away from him. But due to her drained emotions Isabel didn’t pay much attention to her surroundings and she tripped on the first tree root that came along. Gracelessly she landed on the ground.

It didn’t take long before he squatted before her. “Stubborn woman! What am I going to do with you?” And then he did the only thing he could think off: he kissed her right on the mouth.

Taken off guard she answered his kiss, deepening it with a force he hadn’t excepted from her. Or maybe only in his dreams. Her arms crawled around his neck, pulling him close as if her world depended on it. Alex shifted his position when their combined weight threatened to unbalance him. His movement brought her back to her senses. The minute she started to think clearly again, Isabel shoved him away after lashing out and smacking him across his face.

Rubbing his red and hurt cheek, Alex grinned. “And then, she’s alive again!”

Blazing she glared at him. “You’re nuts!”

“Says the pot to the kettle!” Alex snorted. “I may be nuts, there’s no denying that one, but you’re a crazy woman too, Isabel Evans. Anyway, you’ve got to admit it worked.”

She furrowed her brows in question.

“I hate the words ‘fine’ and ‘great’.” With a fake voice he imitated. “Oh yes sir, your album is great! You’re so great! The songs are great!” He wound himself up with every example he quoted. “Or those people who say ‘I’m doing soooo fine!’ while the world around them crumbles! It’s bullshit, Isabel! It’s just lip service, you know.”

He took a deep breath and stroked her face with this right thumb. “Look, I understand if you don’t want to talk to me. I’m basically a stranger and even the slightest memories you have of me are already outdated. But don’t deny your feelings. Don’t run away from them. Take my word, running away isn’t a solution.”

With big eyes Isabel heard him vent his frustrations and advice. This Alex surprised her more than she could say. After being on a rollercoaster all morning, he didn’t make it any easier for her. Especially not after that kiss, a kiss that had made her tingle from head to toe. She didn’t understand what he was trying to do but at the same time his direct approach was somehow a direct hit too.

Alex flexed his fingers and let them crack before pointing towards her crashed car. “At least let me help you. Your car will have to be towed.”

“No, it won’t.” she thought to herself but she couldn’t exactly tell him that she could pop the dents out just by touching the hood. Or could she? A wicked smile appeared on her face.

***

With a last sway of her arm she waved the two cars out. They had driven off like they had come: Liz had taken a seat next to Max blue BMW while Kyle had escorted Tess to his pickup.

Although they had all smiled after the meeting, Maria knew the situation had weighed on all of them. She was still a bit surprised that Kyle had offered Tess a ride back to town. After being hit by a load of unexpected and above that highly extraordinary information she had half-believed he would’ve turned her down.

Maria knew her brother, he always stood with his both feet in the real world. He even dispatched her mom’s and her own preference of naturopathy as a lot of mumbo-jumbo. But Kyle remained a gentleman from head to toe too. Jim Valenti had drummed it in his son’s head that a men should always be polite and good mannered towards women. And apparently that life lesson had taken the upper hand.

When the last car disappeared behind the curve of the driveway, Maria stayed behind. In spite of the boiling heat, typical for the time of the year in New Mexico, she shivered. With her arms crossed she tried to rub the goose-flesh away.

What a day!

The drama of the morning kept playing before her eyes. How was it possible that a day that had started so peacefully had turned into such a horror of a day?

The burden pressed on her shoulders, almost suffocating her in the process. Her maternal instinct guided her through the wreckage. It was the only thing that kept her there, that kept her from crumbling down or going ballistic. Or fleeing as far away as possible.

Her mind drifted again to Michael. Oh boy, she sure could empathize with him, even more than before.

Her head popped up towards the cottage. Would he be there?

Her feet found the way to the house on automatic pilot. Before the door she hesitated briefly before drumming her knuckles firmly against the wooden front door. Her patience to wait was small to non-existent, so she whirled around and bolted back off. Just when she jumped off the last step of the porch, a noise behind her made her look back.

Michael’s weary head peeked from behind the door. When he saw who was standing in front of his house, he took a deep breath.

“Are they gone?”

“Yeah,” she nodded.

He opened the door a bit further. Maria immediately noticed his sweaty t-shirt, clinging to his upper body. Like he had run for hours, which was probably exactly what he had done.

“Are you ok?”

The worry in her voice made him uncomfortable, so he just shrugged his shoulders. “Are you?” he countered.

“No.” Her plain answer couldn’t be any more clear.

“You want to come in?”

Maria nodded. “Yeah.”

Silently she followed him inside. He waved at the couch in his living room.

“Have a seat.”

“Thanks.”

Maria wiped her clammy hands on her jeans before she sat down. “Can we talk about what happened?”

Of course she would like to talk. Knowing that he really couldn’t avoid the topic, he stoically answered. “Talk on.”

Searching for a lead to start, Maria’s eyes wandered through the room. They fell on a beautiful painting standing on the floor. A painting of a cute little toddler. His daughter!

Maria held her breath. A younger version of her daughter smiled brightly at her. The resemblance to Emily was unmistakable.

Just before she could comment on it she noticed a backpack and some plastic bags standing next to it. A quick look in the room told her that it was very clean. Too clean to belong to Michael.

“Michael?”

Michael heard the warning tremble in her voice and followed her gaze towards his small amount of belongings, standing ready to leave in a sec. Questioning she lifted an eyebrow when he didn’t react. Her piercing eyes demanded an answer.

Fuck! He had thought that he had been ready to answer her questions just before going away. But when he saw the disappointment in Maria’s features, it grabbed him by the throat.

Why wasn’t she happy that he would leave her and Emily alone? That he would distance himself, just to set them free? Why didn’t she see that his only option was to sacrifice himself in order to keep them alive?

Desperate he tried to apprehend. “Please, understand. I need to do this, Maria.”

“No, you don’t.”

Resigned to his fate, he just grabbed the bags, put the painting under his left arm and marched out of the room.

“No, no, no, no!” Maria shook her head while barging behind him.

Oh that was not expected, but not a surprise either... If Michael thinks that running away is the solution, he should do it but that's chosing the easy way!

And Isabel, oh forget it... she just is what she will always be, the alien Queen!

@ Eve: I think that he believes he’s doing the opposite: sacrificing himself to save his loved ones. Taking the – for him – hard way to leave them alone. His way of thinking isn’t always logical for others, but yeah, that’s him.

Indeed, Isabel is something!

@ Carolyn: Alex balances Isabel out, like nobody has before. It’s something she isn’t used to. On the other hand, she isn’t the woman he thought she would be. Not even a bit.

If you enjoy ax in his BMW, then I think you will like this chapter (and the one coming).

Well, if it’s up to Michael, he will leave. There’s no doubt about it. But will Maria let him go? Will she step up? That’ll be the question, if you ask me.

Author’s note:
* With strong references to first season’s ‘Destiny’, ‘Heat Wave’, ‘The Balance’ and ‘Blood Brother’. It really turned into a knitting-work, lying very close to the original thing.
* The songs in this chapter are from Sixpence none the richer – Kiss me and Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

Chapter Thirty-One

“Don’t you dare walk out on me, Michael Guerin!”

Maria’s sharp exclamation made him stop in his tracks. But he refused to turn around, knowing he would crumble. “Let me go, Maria.”

The despair in his voice was tangible. “Michael?”

Finally he turned to her, the few belongings he had gathered the last week still in his hands. His face was bleak and showed a grimace. “It’s not safe.”

“The way I see it, it’s never going to be safe. What difference does it make if you leave?”

Michael shook his head. “No, I’m not safe. Knowing me isn’t safe. Kyle’s right. I’m a danger to everybody around me. Hannah and Court are already dead. And it’s my fault. I’m not going to take that chance on Emily and you.”

In two long strides she bridged the gap between Michael and herself. She held him by the arm. “Wait. Don’t do this to me, Michael, please. You need me now, more than you have before, right?”

“No, I don’t need anyone.” His denial was headstrong, his hope that he would believe it himself if he just kept repeating it.

Maria tried to make eye contact. “Well, maybe I do. Did you ever think of that? Did you ever think of Emily? You say that you always wanted a family. You got a second chance now but you’re just throwing it away. You’re throwing us away. Just like that. Why is that, Michael? Why?”

He couldn’t hide the pain inside anymore. “Maybe because I love you too much. I really can’t handle losing you guys too. I really can’t. Ever think about that one?” he countered.

His voice harbored so much emotion that Maria knew he was telling the truth. That he cared about them, maybe even cared too much. Michael came across as emotionless. In plain sight his face could turn blank, while deep inside he was a barrel of penned-up emotions. Like a volcano, ready to explode its warm lava. And the lava came, in one single tear.

Softly she rubbed his arm while whispering. “Then stay.”

He didn’t react immediately. Maria knew that it was now or never. Determined to take this last chance, she rattled off everything she knew. “When you left, Max, Kyle, Tess, Liz and I had a little meeting. The biggest conclusion is serious and devastating at the same time. If that Tess girl is right, you guys are royals of a place called Antar. You guys had people with you to protect you. Somehow one of them isn’t pleased that you’re building your lives here on earth. He’s tracking down your children and he was doing it even before you met us.”

“So either way Emily will be bait.” He softly murmured.

Maria snored. “You sound like Max, but yeah, that’s the bottom line.”

Perplexed, he glared at her. He didn’t understand her response. “Aren’t you mad at me?”

“Are you kidding me?” She looked him right in the eyes, just to find he was dead serious. He really had no clue whatsoever. “Emily is a little treasure. She’s enriched my life like nothing before. And so have you these last couple of days.”

With a thump Michael’s bags fell to the ground, and with one move he kissed her on her forehead, reached over and hugged her with his right arm while still holding the painting in his other hand. Softly he whispered in her hair. “I’m going to find that son of a bitch and I’m going to rip his heart out.”

“I don’t believe he has one, Michael.” She said before cuddling deeper in his embrace.

***

Isabel looked at him in doubt. Internally weighing if she could take this risk or not. If she would leak their origins or not. Something she normally wouldn’t even consider but after today… God, the thought of Max and Michael who had spilled the beans still made her blood boil. She bit her lower lip.

“Isabel?”

Alex’s worried voice tipped the scale and before she could rethink it she heard herself provoke him. “You keep saying that I’m not open-minded. But are you?”

Isabel’s out of the blue question took him unaware. “Yeah, of course!”

She licked her lips before proceeding. “Well, the reason I act like I do is because I’m not from around here.”

“Really? Is that it?” His eyebrows shot upward. From everything he could’ve expected this was certainly not it. And he was totally not impressed by it either. “Well, Isabel, that’s the lamest excuse I ever heard.”

His rude remark almost made her stamp her feet but she tried to contain herself. Now that she had started to reveal the tip of an iceberg, she felt the need to show more. To finally tell someone else what was on her mind for so long, finally finding some closure.

“I mean it, Alex. I’m not from here.”

Alex smiled. If she wanted to play games he could play along. “Where are you from?” he smirked.

Isabel pointed her finger up.

“What? Like, Wyoming?”

Isabel rolled her eyes after his plain unwillingness to understand. He wasn’t exactly conducive to meeting her halfway. So she bit out. “And I’m not a Canuck either.”

“So what, you're saying you’re like what, an... illegal alien?” he laughed, trying to pass it off as a joke. He really didn’t understand where she was going with her explanation.

To his surprise she nodded. “Yeah, sort of. Listen, Alex… I’m from somewhere else.”

“Isabel, what are you talking about?”

God, he really was a man from head to toe. Hints were totally wasted on him. She could see that he was even getting bored with them. If she wanted to tell him, she needed to be straight.

“Look, Alex, there isn't any way for me to say this, but to just...but to just say this, ok?” Isabel took a deep breath before continuing. “We…We think we were in the 1947 crash. Ok, we were actually like in these incubation pods for a really long time...like 40 years, and then we came out in like the form of little children.”

Concerned, he approached her. “Isabel, are you ok?”

For the second time in as many minutes, Isabel rolled her eyes. Alex was an exceptional case in every way possible. Of all the things he could say, he decided to question her well-being!

Hesitantly she tried to read his body language. “I’m fine. Uh, so...um, how do you feel? You know, about what I said?”

To her surprise Alex just shrugged his shoulders. “Well, part of me, uh...part of me feels like you've gone insane, and the other part of me feels like I want some of the massive doses of hallucinogens you've obviously been taking. But...I don't believe in aliens.”

Nonchalant he leaned against a tree trunk. He clearly wasn’t easily daunted. “It doesn't add up. I mean, the human body is the most intricate and complex machine in the universe. No matter how sophisticated your race is, I mean, how could you possibly just take on human form?”

Skittish and pissed off when the biggest secret in her life failed to impress him, Isabel threw her hands in the air. “Fine. I'm not an alien. Whatever you say.”

Her short fuse blew his mind and her seriousness made his black and white vision cease. “Ok, then let's just say it were possible, all right? Why on earth would...excuse the phrase. Why would you be sent here to begin with? I mean, what purpose could you possibly have?”

He didn’t have to wait for her prickly answer. “To wipe out the world, one annoying celebrity at a time.”

“Sorry.” Alex couldn’t help but be taken aback by her verbal punch.

His soft apology made her soften. She admired his willingness to start a long conversation when he didn’t even believe a thing she was saying. Isabel didn’t know if she could’ve acted so open-minded if she had been in his shoes. Above that, she recognized every single thing he had summed up. Through the years she had contemplated them too, some a bit more than others. But she had never once had the chance to exchange thoughts with someone outside her small circle.

So Isabel nodded to accept his apology and took a seat on a nearby fallen tree.

She looked up and faced him openly. “I don't know, Alex. When we came out of these pods we looked just like normal kids. We've never been anything but what you see. No green skin, no antennas. We have emotions, we feel pain, and we probably have more questions about ourselves than you do. I mean, haven't you ever felt different from everybody else? Like, if you tried to reveal your true self to someone, they just would never understand.”

Of course he had. Repeatedly and the last months even on a daily base. It was one of the reasons he had come home to Roswell. So he nodded. “Yeah.”

“Well, that's what it's like to be us. We're just as human as you are, Alex...only we can manipulate the molecular structure of things.”

“You, what?” Alex had thought he had heard it all, and even that was difficult enough to process. But this took the cake!

Without clarifying herself, Isabel just stood up and walked towards her wrecked car. With one finger she reached for a bump in the hood and dented it out for his astonished, wide eyes.

“What the fuck!”

With renewed eyes his gaze went back to her.

***

Between humming and singing out loud, Liz accompanied the cheerful song on the radio with her own version. 8) She felt great and it radiated in every little move she was making. Her eyes beamed and the healthy blush on her cheeks made her more adorable as ever. If that was even possible. When Max saw how she became wholly engrossed by the music, it made him roar with laughter.

“Sorry.” She excused herself when she became aware of him.

“Don’t be.”

“Yeah, but I should be more reserved after everything that happened earlier.” Liz tried to push a stray lock of hair behind her ear but the wind kept playing with it. “But it’s such a good song, you know? One of my favourites.”

“I know.” He nodded along with her. With one hand steady on the wheel Max patted her leg with the other. “I mean it, Liz, don’t apologize.”

When she didn’t react, he gave the steering wheel a little jerk and pulled over on the side of the road. The minute the car was stationary, he grabbed her hands in his bigger ones. “Liz, I don’t even know where to begin but I do know this. I’m so glad you’re here with me. You bring me back to life. You take me away from my worries. I really needed that, I really needed you.”

His open confession made her blush. Her cheeks felt so warm that she could swear they were on fire. Or at least as red as a tomato. Max felt her unease when she started to shift in her seat. Teasingly he squeezed her fingers in an effort to lighten the mood again. “Besides, you’re right. This is a great song!”

And with that he restarted the car, pulling back onto the road. Completely out of tune, he started to sing along too.

It made Liz chuckle out loud. Her chuckle widened in a big smile after he stuck his tongue out at her.

“Are you still up for our picnic?”

He shot a look at her to see how she would react. Though Liz smiled broadly at his suggestion, he felt the need to explain himself. “I just thought we should do something, you know? Something normal for once. Things have been so...”

His voice caught. With ease Liz finished his thought. “Yeah, I know, insane.”

Their conversation fell silent for a while. The morning had indeed been insane, actually beyond insane. So their thoughts wandered off, back to the morning craziness and its future consequences.

But the minute Liz heard the first notes of the intro on the radio she interrupted the peace with one turn of the volume knob. Within seconds the speakers blared out the happy tunes of another of her favorites.

:D

Liz threw her head back, closed her eyes and enjoyed the moment. “Oh, my God. I love this song.”

“Me, too.” Max smiled at her.

Together they felt great.

You’ve got to cherish the moments when you’re with the one person you want to be with. And the wind is blowing through your hair. The song that just describes your entire soul happens to come on, and then the person that you want to be with happens to love the same song. No matter how crazy your life has gotten, there’s this one moment. This perfect moment. Where you could just say that no matter what happens nothing can take this moment away from you.

That moment they enjoyed. Together.

Really funny part!

Loved what Isabel can do to her car; I would like to have the same facility: Practical for reparing the color when I hit my car against a post! etc etc...

Michael is really stubborn as a mule, when he has something in head! But Maria has the temperament for it!...

And Max and Liz; always at the same wavelength!

Looking for more! EVE

Hey, Eve, that's the most friendly bump I ever had, even without using the exact word in it! Thanks!

But you don't have to be afraid. That wasn't the end, far from it exactually. Life came in between, or actually it was Carnival, an event that is very popular in the area where we live. And I had it in me to sew our own costumes... 8)

When everything goes alright, I can finish my next chapter this week and when Angel gives her her blessing, it will be posted almost immediately.

But you don't have to be afraid. That wasn't the end, far from it exactually. Life came in between, or actually it was Carnival, an event that is very popular in the area where we live. And I had it in me to sew our own costumes... 8)

Oh you know, don't worry about the delay, because I know a lot about Carnivals!
We have one which is really famous for the people in Basel, and the world stoppt to work for three days...
Infortunately, I have little to it because I did grow-up in Geneva and it's not my thing! But my kids!!!
They love it...
