Chapter Eighteen
Soft fingers gently stroked Inara’s back, pulling her away from her slumber. Her eyes slowly fluttered open and she was met with sunlight streaming inside the cottage.

“Good morning,” a male voice whispered, pressing his lips against Inara’s ear and Inara smiled as the events of the other night filled her mind.

Her entire body shivered with excitement as Zan’s lips moved from her ear down to her neck, before his fingers cupped her chin and turned her face to meet his in a kiss that made heat build at the center of her body. “Good morning,” she said back once they pulled apart. She turned her body around to face Zan, who was laying on his side, arm bent at the elbow and his hand supporting his head. The smile on his lips made Inara blush. Once upon a time, having Zan look at her with such adoration had only been a fantasy. She still couldn’t believe that now it was a reality. “What are you doing?”

“Staring at the most beautiful woman in the universe.”

Once again, her cheeks reddened, and she had to hide her face in her pillow. “You’re so full of it, your Highness,” she said with a giggle before looking at him again.

“No, I’m serious,” he replied. “Laying here, watching you sleep…you’re gorgeous.” Then a playful smirk spread across his lips. “Even if you do snore.”

Inara gasped. “I do not!” She said, playfully smacking his shoulder and making Zan chuckle in response.

“Sorry, but you do. It’s a cute snore, though. Not at all manly.”

Without warning, Inara launched herself at Zan, pinning him down to the bed. “And here I thought you were a gentleman.”

Zan was unable to respond though. He was too preoccupied with Inara’s beautiful, naked form on top of him. Her body was flawless, and his eyes began to darken with desire. Inara noticed this and her body immediately responded as the atmosphere around them went from playful to erotic.

“Inara, the thoughts running through my mind right now are anything but gentlemanly,” he said, his voice coming out huskier than before.

The ache in her center grew as she felt’s Zan’s manhood begin to harden underneath the sheets. She began to rock her body against his hard length, smiling as a guttural moan escaped his lips. She loved having this kind of power over him. She was just about say so when Zan reached up and pulled her face down to his.

Their lips met in a passionate frenzy that drove Inara wild. As their mouths opened and their tongues dueled, Zan couldn’t stop his hands from roaming over her naked body, running up her legs, across her back and then moving around to gently message her breasts.

Inara gasped against Zan’s mouth and he felt himself grow harder. He had to have her. Now! She must’ve been able to sense this because she immediately sat up, pulling the sheets away from Zan, exposing his hard length to her.

She didn’t know if there was anything more beautiful than the sight of this naked, muscular man beneath her. Feeling mischievous, she wrapped her fingers around his swollen member and began to slowly move her hand in an up and down motion.

“Gods!” Zan gasped, gripping the mattress and closing his eyes in pleasure. Inara may not have been as experienced as he was in this area, but she was a quick study, figuring out the rhythm that would drive him crazy. “What are you doing to me?” He choked out, feeling the pleasure mount with every stroke of her soft hand.

“Do you want me?” She asked in a sultry voice, feeling like a sexual goddess as she watched her lover struggle to form words.

“Y-Y-Yes, I want you.”

She smiled and increased the speed of her movements. “How much do you want me?”

Immediately, Zan’s right hand moved to her wet center, finding her little nub and rubbing it in small circles. Inara cried out in surprised pleasure, momentarily losing her rhythm on his cock. “More than anything in the universe,” he said, continuing his movements. “Please let me have you.”

Eager to comply with his request, Inara sat back up and positioned her wet center over his erect cock and impaled herself on him. She paused, though, wincing as she felt the lingering soreness from their lovemaking the other night.

Zan noticed the way her body stiffened and sat up. “Are you okay?” He asked, cupping her cheek in his hand.

She shook her head. “It’s nothing. I’m just a little sore.”

Realization dawned on him and he felt like a fool for not remembering that the first time would’ve been painful for her. With one hand still cupping her cheek, his other hand moved down to her and a glowing light started emanating from his palm.

Inara felt a warm tingle within her as Zan’s healing powers worked their magic to ease her pain and heighten her arousal. Closing her eyes, Inara cried out as Zan shot a burst of energy through her, making her inner walls clamp down hard on him as she came.

“Oh, gods!” Zan groaned through clenched teeth, trying to hold himself in check as she rode out her orgasm. Once he felt her body calm, he pulled her in for a deep kiss. “Better?” He asked teasingly.

In response, Inara’s inner walls began to rhythmically squeeze his erection, causing him to suck in his breath. “What do you think?”

Unable to control his desire anymore, Zan flipped Inara onto her back and pounding his body into her, hard and fast. Inara cried out in pleasure, wrapping her legs around him and bringing her hips up to meet his demanding thrusts. The next few moments were a blend of feminine moans and masculine grunts as the two raced towards that moment of ultimate pleasure. Zan could feel Inara’s body tensing beneath him and knew she was close. And at that moment, there was nothing he wanted more than to feel her body come around him. Moving his hand down, he started stroking her clit and a few seconds later, was rewarded with the sound of her screaming his name as she reached her climax.

“Zan! Oh, my Gods! Zan!” She cried out as her inner walls pulsed wildly around his shaft, bringing him to ecstasy with her.

“Inara!” He groaned, wrapping his arm tightly around her waist and holding her close to him as he burst inside of her. A couple of thrusts later, and he was collapsing on top Inara, panting heavily from their exertions. He considered rolling over to avoid crushing her, but as Inara wrapped her arms and legs tightly around him, he knew she was enjoying their closeness as much as he was.

Zan and Inara laid together for awhile after their lovemaking, holding each other and sharing soft kisses. But they soon noticed how late it was getting and reluctantly climbed out of bed to dress.

As Inara finished putting on her dress, she glanced back at the bed and smiled to herself. Last night—and this morning—had been perfect. Laying in Zan’s arms, being loved by him, gave her a feeling of safety like nothing she’d ever experienced before and all she wanted to do was stay in this cottage with him forever. In here, I don’t have to worry about Antar’s future, she thought gravely, her smile fading. And just like that, all the worries she had about her visions came flooding back. How could this be happening now when she finally had everything she ever wanted? And how was she going to stop it?

“You look distracted,” Zan said as he came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.

“I’m not,” she lied.

“Are you sure?” He turned Inara around to face him. “Are you still worried about those dreams?”

The concern in his beautiful, brown eyes made Inara’s heart melt and she wished she could talk to him about what was happening her, but it was pointless. She knew he didn’t believe her and probably wouldn’t until she brought him some proof. Not wanting to dwell on it anymore, she smiled and gently pressed her lips to his.

“No, I’m not,” she answered. “I’m sure you’re right. They’re just dreams.”

After escorting Inara home, making sure to drop her off halfway to the estate so no one spotted him, Zan returned to the palace. Sneaking in through one of the passageways, Zan made his way to his bedchambers feeling happier than he’d ever been. He’d just spent the night making love to the most amazing woman and feeling excited about his future for the first time in a long time.

His happiness faded, however, when he entered his bedchambers and found his father sitting in one of the lounge chairs looking anything but happy.

“Where have you been?” King Garok asked, keeping his voice as controlled as possible. Inside, he was fuming.

Remembering the meeting he was supposed to attend, he felt guilt rise inside of him and quickly tried to explain himself. “Father, I’m sorry. I just—"

“I honestly don’t know what to do with you anymore,” Garok interrupted as he stood from his seat and started pacing. “Your mother and I have tried to be patient. When you ended your relationship with Ava without giving us any reason, we gave you time. We had hoped that if we gave you time, you two would eventually patch things up.”

Zan felt a twitch of annoyance at the idea that his parents had been waiting for him to get back together with Ava, but he remained silent.

“But you’ve only gotten worse,” Garok continued. “You sleep around, you shirk your responsibilities, you’ve made no effort—”

“Father, I—” Zan tried to speak, but was once again cut off by his father, who was suddenly in his son’s face, grasping his shoulders and looking at him with a sense of urgency that Zan had never seen before.

“Listen, son, you have the potential to be a great king. You’re smart and brave, and underneath all of the anger you’re feeling, I know you have a good heart,” he said passionately. “I know that you don’t feel ready for the responsibility that we’re giving you and I wish that I could give you the time that you needed, but I’m afraid we don’t have that kind of time.”

“Wait, what do mean?” Zan moved away from his father, looking worried. “Father, what’s going on?”

Realizing how much he had said, Garok closes his eyes and takes a breath, looking more composed as he stared into his son’s concerned eyes. “One of the things about being king, son. You always worry about the future of your people. So much happens in this life that we can’t control. I just…” he paused, taking another deep breath. “I want to know that my family will be all right if something happens.”

A few months ago, Zan would’ve rolled his eyes in exasperation. This wasn’t the first time his father had lectured him about his responsibilities as future king. But he’d never seen his father look so worried before now. And for time, Zan really thought about what he’d been putting his parents through. This entire time, he’d been running around acting like self-indulgent brat while his father has had the future of an entire kingdom on his shoulders. A kingdom that will one day be mine. The weight of that thought hit him like a ton of bricks. “I promise I won’t miss another meeting,” he promised.

The two of them were silent for a moment, but Zan could see skepticism in his father’s eyes. “I’m sorry for my behavior,” he continued. “I’ve been acting immaturely and treating my family horribly. I want to do better.”

Garok studied his son, unsure of what to think. He wanted to believe that his son was sincere and would finally get his life together, but it was hard for him to believe it. “I really hope that’s true,” he replied. “So, may I ask what kept you away yesterday?”

Zan suddenly turned sheepish. “Something important distracted me.”

Garok arched a brow. “Something or someone?”

Zan couldn’t help but blush a little at being caught by his father. “Someone important to me,” he said. “She needed me yesterday.”

Garok couldn’t help but roll his eyes as his original skepticism returned. “I’m sure,” he said dryly.

Zan shook his head, not wanting his father to believe that Inara was like his other trysts. No, she was so much more than that. “It’s not like that,” he assured. “This woman…she’s special to me.”

Garok watched the way his son’s eyes suddenly lit up as he talked about this mystery woman. And the skip in his step as he entered the room. He looked…lighter. Happier. And for a moment, Garok’s heart filled with hope, wondering if the woman was who he thought. “Is it Ava?”

“No,” Zan blurted out as fast as possible, hoping to squash any dreams his father had at a reconciliation. “It’s not Ava. Honestly, I didn’t even feel this strongly about Ava.”

Garok sighed in disappointment, choosing to focus on the fact that his son was happy. “All right. Just don’t let it happen again. I need you to take your training seriously.”

Zan nodded. “I promise I will.”

With that, Garok turned to leave, then paused and glanced back at his son with a smile. “Oh, and your mother and I intend to meet this lady soon.”

Before Zan could respond, his father was gone. He knew that his father was serious about wanting to meet the girl that had stolen his heart, but he couldn’t help but wonder how everyone would react when they found out that Inara was the woman he’d fallen so deeply in love with.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Inara climbed the trellis on her family’s estate, hoping to avoid getting caught by her father. Something told her he wouldn’t be happy to find out his youngest daughter had been out all night, especially if he knew what she’d been doing. Making it to her balcony, she swung her leg over the ledge and landed on the balcony with a tired sight. Why couldn’t she have Zan’s ability to levitate?

As she entered her bedroom, she knew she had a little more time before the maids came in to clean. She quickly messed up her blankets and sheets, so no one would be suspicious and then headed to the bathroom to clean up. She drew herself a warm bath and, with a blissful sigh, she submerged herself in the water. As she shifted, she felt a dull ache between her legs and smiled. She was glad that Zan’s healing hadn’t completely taken away the pain. She loved having this erotic reminder of what he had done to her the night before. Inara finished bathing and put on a flowing, lavender gown just as the maids came in and started straightening up her room.

“Good morning, mistress,” one of the maids greeted cheerfully. She was a sweet, elderly lady with gray hair and a plump body. She’d been with the family for as long as she could remember.

“Good morning,” she greeted back with a smile before leaving her room. She made her way downstairs just as the doors to her father’s study swung open. Her father stepped out of the study followed by Prince Kivar. “Kivar,” she said in surprise.

Both men glanced up as Inara joined them in the foyer. “This is an unexpected visit.”

“Inara, it’s so nice to see you,” he said, unable to hide the smile that appeared on his face at her presence. “Yes, my fiancée and I are just here for wedding business. She really wanted Antarian Orchids for the wedding.”

“Where is your fiancée?” She asked as she realized that Princess Saria wasn’t with him.

Before Kivar could reply, Jarek spoke. “Kivar did the wise thing and left the ladies to their own devices. Wedding planning is dangerous business for us men,” he chuckled, slapping Kivar lightly on the back.

Kivar laughed. “Yes, it is. Princess Saria is with her mother and my step-mother. And I thought I’d come for a visit. I hope I’m not intruding.

“Nonsense,” Jarek replied. “You are always welcome in my home. And you were just in time for breakfast.” He gestured towards the dining room. “Shall we?”

“If you don’t mind,” Kivar started before Jarek and Inara could leave the room, “I was hoping to speak with Inara for a few moments.”

Jarek looked curiously between Inara and Kivar before nodding. “Of course. But don’t be too long. Wouldn’t want the food to get cold.”

With a smile, Jarek walked away, leaving Inara and Kivar standing alone in the foyer.

Once he was sure they were alone, Kivar grasped Inara’s hand, surprising her, and gently tugged her with him in the direction of her father’s study. Releasing her hand, he quickly shut the double doors to ensure that no one overheard their conversation.

“Kivar, are you all right?” Inara asked, watching him in confusion.

“I actually wanted to ask you the same thing,” he answered, studying Inara closely.

“I’m fine,” she said, becoming even more confused and uncomfortable. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Kivar pulled out a piece of paper from his coat pocket and unfolded it, handing it to her. Taking it from him, Inara felt her heart drop to her to her stomach as she examined the page and saw the same spiral symbol that was on her necklace.

“Inara,” Kivar spoke again, his voice more serious than before. “Please tell me where you got that necklace.”

Inara just stared at him for a few moments, unsure of what to say or do. She didn’t know how to answer his question because she still didn’t know who gave her the necklace, or what was happening to her. The sense of helplessness made her eyes begin to well up with tears, but she did her best to stifle them. “I don’t know,” she answered honestly, trying to ignore the lump in her throat. “It was a graduation gift, but it didn’t have a name attached to it. When I touched the necklace, something happened to me.”

“What happened?” Kivar took a step towards her, becoming more intrigued by the second.

As Kivar stared intently at Inara, waiting for her answer, she took a deep breath and prepared herself for whatever his reaction would be. “I had this vision…of the future, I think. And I’ve been having them ever since.”

Kivar didn’t respond at first as his mind tried to process the information she gave him. Before now, the idea of someone having the gift of premonition would be ludicrous, but after everything he’d discovered from Nikolai, he couldn’t discount the possibility. And if this was true, if Inara could see the future, there was no telling the kind of power this could bring me. “What do you see in these visions?”

Inara was taken aback by how calm Kivar was. She’d expected him to call her crazy, or to try and convince her that these visions were just dreams like Zan had. But he seemed to believe what she was saying. “Antar being destroyed,” she said cautiously, studying his face, trying to figure out what he was thinking. “You believe me?”

A faint smile played on his lips as he stepped towards her. “Yes, I do. And I want to help you figure this out.”

“Why?” She couldn’t hide the skepticism in her voice. “Why do you care about this symbol? What’s in it for you?”

Reaching out, Kivar traced the spiral symbol on Inara’s necklace, resisting the urge to allow his fingers to wander onto the smooth, creamy flesh of her neck. Reluctantly, he brought his hand down. “Nothing at first,” he said, staring down at her intently. “I was mildly curious when I saw you wearing this at Vilandra and Rath’s wedding reception. But then I found out that my father was researching this symbol as well.”

Inara’s eyes widened in shock. “What?”

“Inara, my father isn’t one to put stock in fairytales, but he’s obsessed with this thing. And now that I know you’re having these visions, I’m concerned. This symbol is connected to an object of great power and I think my father wants it for himself.”

As he watched Inara process what he was saying, some part of him knew he should feel guilty for withholding his real motivation for helping Inara—that he wanted that power as much as his father did. This is for her benefit too, he rationalized to himself. Once he had what he needed to take down his father, he could finally be with Inara and give her the kind of love that she deserved.

“Do you think he’s the one who’s going to destroy Antar?” She hoped he wouldn’t be offended by the question, but she had to ask it. For the first time since she returned home, she had some proof that she wasn’t crazy. That this was really happening. And knowing that filled her with as much dread as it did relief.

With a sigh, Kivar took a seat in one of Jarek’s large chairs. “It wouldn’t surprise me,” he said, feigning concern. “My father is a ruthless man. He’s always wanted the power that Antar has. If he gets his hands on this thing—whatever it is—he won’t need to rely on arranged marriages. He can just take Antar by force.”

Inara sat down in the seat next to Kivar, watching him with a pang of sympathy. She couldn’t imagine what he was feeling at that moment. To have a father who was capable of such evil. “I’m so sorry, Kivar,” she said, taking one of his hands in hers.

The feel of Inara’s hand on his made Kivar’s heart beat wildly in his chest. One day, he vowed to himself. One day you will be mine. Once this was all over, he was certain that she’d see that no man could ever love her the way that he did, and she’d return his feelings. And her childish crush on that dolt Prince Zan would be nothing more than a distant memory.

“Inara, Antar may not be my home world, but that doesn’t mean I want to see it destroyed by my father. Let me help you.”

Before she could stop herself, tears began to well up in Inara’s eyes, but she tried to contain them as she sat back in her chair. “How can you help me?”

Kivar pulled his hand away from Inara’s and reached inside his pocket. “Have you ever seen this woman?” He asked as he pulled out a picture and handed it over to Inara.

She took the photo and studied it closely. It was an image of a woman in her early fifties with sleek dark hair going all the way down to the small of her back. With beautiful olive skin and brown eyes, Inara could tell that this woman had most-likely been beautiful her entire life and always would be.

With a disappointed sigh, Inara handed the photo back to Kivar. “No, I’ve never met her. Who is she?”

“Her name’s Lar-el.” He tucked the photo back in his coat pocket. “That symbol is connected to a book written by a man named Rinaldi, a worshiper of Illyria. Some say he had the gift of sight as well.”

“But what does this woman have to do with anything?” She asked.

“The book is written in a language I can’t translate. It’s also only one half of the original book, which makes things even more challenging,” he replied. “Lar-el is obsessed with Rinaldi.”

Inara nodded in understanding. “And you believe there’s a chance she could tell us about these books.”

Kivar smiled. “Exactly, and I promise that I will do everything in my power to find her.”

The certainty in his voice filled Inara made her feel a sense of safety she hadn’t felt in a while. Unable to control herself any longer, tears began to slide down Inara’s cheeks. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “You don’t know how hard it’s been carrying this by myself.”

Kivar gave Inara a gentle smile and wiped a tear from her cheek. “Don’t worry. We’ll figure this out together.”

Chapter Nineteen
Two weeks later, everyone gathered at the Antarian Royal Palace to celebrate the festival of lights, the holiday celebrating the creation of the universe by the thirteen gods. Inara sat at a table with her Serena and Princess Vilandra, barely paying attention to them while they happily chatted away about trivial subjects. Her mind was too preoccupied with everything that had happened to her over the past two weeks. The information Kivar had given her and his willingness to help her uncover the truth about her visions had left her feeling a sense of hope for the first time in months. She wasn’t helpless anymore. With Kivar’s help, she finally had the power to do something and hopefully save the people she loved.

Inara could feel eyes on the back of her neck and glanced over to see Zan standing by himself, leaning against a pillar. His eyes raked over her body with an intense mixture of lust and adoration that made Inara blush. Her relationship with Zan had also changed in the last two weeks. And it was a most welcomed change. All those years she spent pining over the Prince of Antar, she never believed it was possible to love him more than she did back then. But she was wrong. Since the night they shared in that cabin, the two of them had been closer than she could’ve ever imagined. And it wasn’t just physically—though there had been plenty of that in the last two weeks—but emotionally as well. That night, a bond was cemented between them forever and that terrified her as much as it thrilled her. Their relationship was still new, and she still had no idea where it would lead them. All she knew was that she was happy and more in love than she’d ever been in her life. She was going to enjoy that. Still looking at Zan, she gave him a flirtatious smile before returning to her conversation with Serena and Vilandra.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Across the ballroom, Zan felt himself slowly losing his mind with need as he watched Inara. She was stunning in her midnight blue dress that hugged her body in all the right places. Her silky hair framed her face in soft waves, and all he wanted to do was run his fingers through those locks. Well, that wasn’t true. He wanted to do a lot more than that and it was all he could do to keep from dragging her off somewhere. It wasn’t just the sex, though. Just being with her, talking to her, holding her body close to his, it brought him a sense of joy he’d never felt before. Even back when he’d been so sure of his love for Ava, he had never been able to fully let his guard down with her. And they never really talked about anything meaningful when they were together. Gods! He’d been such a fool to think that what he had with that woman was love. Getting so wrapped up in her thoughts of Inara, he didn’t even notice Rath’s approach and jumped in surprise.

“Good evening, your Highness,” Rath greeted in a mocking tone, completely oblivious to the lustful thoughts Zan had just been having about his sister.

Zan rolled his eyes and groaned. “Shut up, Rath.”

Rath smirked. “What? Since you’ve decided to start taking your princely duties more seriously, I figured it was only right I show you the proper respect when greeting you.”

It was true. Since his conversation with his father two weeks ago, Zan had been taking his responsibilities as prince more seriously, focusing on his studies and attending meetings with his father. He really wanted to prove to his father and everyone else that he could be a good ruler and even though he knew his father was still skeptical about Zan’s sudden change, he had hope that his parents would believe him eventually.

“Says the man about go out and fight those blasphemous criminals,” Zan replied with pride at his best friend’s bravery. For the past few months, followers of the goddess Illyria had begun attacking villages and abducting young women and performing experiments on them as tribute to the disgraced goddess. Worship of the goddess Illyria was forbidden and punishable by death, so most worshippers kept their faith secret. Their sudden boldness had put everyone on edge.

“I can handle this,” Rath said, giving his friend one of his usual cocky grins. Deep down, he was anything but cocky. So many people were depending on him to succeed. Most importantly, all those innocent girls were depending on him. He just hoped everyone’s faith in his was deserved.

The two men pause their conversation when they spotted Inara and Serena walking over to them. Immediately, Zan’s heart began to race at Inara’s presence, but he did his best to appear casual.

“You better hurry,” Inara said, practically bouncing with excitement. “We need to find a good spot for the fireworks.”

As much as Rath loved his younger sister, he couldn’t stop his eyes from rolling. “We have at least half an hour before the fireworks start.”

Serena chuckled. “Don’t bother, Rath. You know how she is about the fireworks.”

They all smiled appreciatively at Inara’s love for this festival. But that wasn’t the only reason Serena was smiling as she studied Zan and Inara. They could barely take their eyes off each other. Serena was surprised that Rath hadn’t noticed this. Before he could, though, Serena slipped her arm around her younger brother’s and began to lead him away. “But maybe we should go find a spot. It can get crowded.”

Once they were alone, Zan and Inara could barely contain their desire for each other. As Inara brushed past him, pretending to watch the people on the dance floor, the scent of her perfume hit Zan, causing an ache in his groin. He needed her. Now. While she continued to eye the crowd, Zan came up behind her, lowering his mouth towards her ear. “You look beautiful,” he whispered.

His warm breath on her neck sent shivers down Inara’s body and she began to ache with a need that was becoming all too familiar, but no less powerful. “Thank you,” she replied, trying to keep her composure.

“I want you.”

At that, Inara felt her legs turn to jelly. She wanted so badly to drag him off somewhere and have her way with him, but looking around the crowded ballroom, she wasn’t sure if it would be possible to slip away without someone noticing. “Might be kind of hard with all these people around,” she reminded him.

But Zan wasn’t concerned with these people. His only concern right now was getting this beautiful woman alone and a room full of people wasn’t going to deter him. Discreetly, he started caressing the small of Inara’s back, smiling to himself when she let out a gasp. He knew she wanted this as badly as he did. With other hand, he pulled out a small, piece of paper and slipped in between her fingers. “Wait five minutes then excuse yourself and follow these directions.”

He was gone before Inara could say anything, and she sighed in disappointment at the loss of his touch. Those five minutes felt like hours t Inara and she was surprised by how much effort she put into keeping her pace casual as she left the ballroom. Once she was alone in the hallway, she quickened her pace, following the directions on the paper Zan gave her. In her haste to find Zan, she was unaware of another presence in the hallway. She squeaked in surprise when a hand came out from a pillar and grabbed. Inara barely had a chance to register that it was Zan before his lips were on hers and his hands began roaming over her body. She eagerly gave in to him, letting his tongue slide inside her mouth, dueling with her own. She allowed his hands to touch parts of her body she’d never allowed anyone to touch before. Whatever Zan wanted, she gave him.

Unable to control herself any longer, Inara’s hands when to the front of Zan’s pants, attempting to undo the buttons, not caring that they could get caught. Zan broke the kiss and chuckled. “Eager, are we?”

“I want you,” she answered, becoming frustrated with the unyielding buttons on Zan’s pants.

As much fun as he was having, Zan knew he had to stop her or he’d end up ravaging her right there in that hallway. And she deserved better than that. But the pout she gave him when he pulled away from had almost made him change his mind. How could this woman be so adorable and so sexy at the same time? “We’re almost there,” he said as he waved his hand over the wall beside the pillar and a glowing, silver handprint appeared. He gave her a quick glance and smirked at the surprise on her face. He placed his palm against the handprint and a piece of the wall slid away, revealing a hidden corridor. Clasping his hand with hers, Zan began leading her inside. “This way.”

Inara chuckled as she took his hand and allowed him to lead her down the long, narrow corridor. “I remember all the times I used to beg you and Rath to show me one of these hidden passageways,” she said. “You always said no.”

“Well, of course,” he stated with a smile. “No girls allowed.”

“Clearly that rule has changed.”

The two of them made it to the end of the passageway and stopped at what appeared to be a dead end. Zan then waved his hand over the wall, repeating the process he did earlier, and once again, the wall slid away, revealing Zan’s bedchamber. As soon as they entered his room, Zan’s lips were back on Inara’s while he gripped her hair, holding her face as close to his as possible.

His hands then moved to the of her neck, tugging at the strings of her dress. “Need to…” he grunted, pulling one knot free. “…get this…off.”

As she felt Zan tugging at her straps in frustration, Inara smiled against his lips. “You don’t like me in this dress?”

“I do, but right now you’d look better with it off.” Zan waved his hand over the knots holding her dress together, using his powers to pull them free. The dress slid to the floor, leaving Inara standing there in nothing but silk panties and heels.

A sharp breath escaped his lips as he stepped back and took in the beautiful form standing in front of him. All the urgency from earlier now replaced with the desire to imprint this image in his mind forever. Gods, I love this woman, he thought to himself. Gently, he cupped her face in his hands and began gently nipping and teasing her lips with his teeth before going in for a soft kiss.

Inara felt herself getting wetter by the second as Zan continued to undo her with his mouth, trailing kisses from her lips, to her neck, before taking one of her nipples in his mouth. “Ah, Zan!” She cried out, arching her chest into him. He moved to the other breast, sucking and messaging it before moving even lower. Before she knew it, Zan was on his knees in front of her, hooking his thumbs inside the waistband of her panties and sliding them down her legs.

Zan could smell her arousal and felt himself getting harder, if that was even possible, and he knew he had to taste her. Not wasting a second, his lips latched on to her heat, licking and sucking her sensitive nub.

Inara’s legs began to tremble and she had to lean back against the wall for support. Every nerve in her body was on fire and she knew it wouldn’t be long until stars exploded for her. She wasn’t wrong because as soon as Zan started pumping his fingers inside of her, she was gone. “Gods, yes!”

She barely had time to come down from her high before Zan was lifting her in his arms and she was wrapping her legs around his waist. “I need to be inside you,” he said desperately and started moving them towards the bed, his hungry mouth seeking hers out once more.

He eased Inara down on the bed, taking a moment to enjoy the sight of her naked body spread out on his bed before hastily removing his clothes. As he climbed on top of Inara, she eagerly spread her legs wide, crying out as he plunged home.

“Oh, gods!” Zan groaned in pleasure as her warm, wet walls hugged him tightly. His strokes were hard and demanding and Inara met him thrust for thrust as they both raced towards their climax. Zan could feel her body tensing beneath him, her body preparing for another explosive orgasm, and he was more than happy to help her get there. Reaching down, his fingers find her clit and begin rubbing, all the while increasing the tempo of his thrusts. Moments later, Inara came hard, in inner walls rhythmically tightening around him.

“I love you, Zan!” she cried out, her nails digging into his back as waves of pure sexual bliss continued to overtake her. And it wasn’t long before Zan was joining her in ecstasy.

“I love you too!” he moaned, emptying himself inside of her with each hard thrust into her body. Zan collapsed on top of Inara, burying his face in the crook of her neck as he continued to savor the feel of her warm body beneath him. Not wanting to crush her, Zan started to roll off her, but Inara just held on to him tighter, wanting to be close to him. He wasn’t about to complain.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The two of them lay snuggled up together for several moments after their lovemaking, just basking the feel of being in each other’s arms. But soon, Inara brought them back to reality.

“We should probably get back to the party before someone notices.”

“You’re probably right,” Zan replied with a regretful sigh. They disentangled from each other and climbed out of bed to get dressed.

As Inara slid her dress on, tying her straps together, she studied Zan, who had finished getting his pants and shoes on and was now buttoning up her shirt, and smiled. “Or we could just tell people.”

Zan paused mid-button and turned to her, watching her curiously. “Is that what you want to do?”

“I don’t know,” she said with a shrug coming over and wrapping her arms around his neck. “I think it might make things easier. We wouldn’t have to sneak around like this anymore.”

When Zan didn’t respond, Inara’s doubts came rising the surface in an instant. Was he getting bored of her now that they’d slept together? Was she just another conquest for him? As she started to pull away from Zan, he immediately wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her tightly against him.

“It’s not what you’re thinking,” he assured her. “Inara, I love you. You’re the first woman that I could see a happy future with. But you know that my father wants me to choose a wife soon.”

She gave him a small nod.

“Once we tell people, it won’t be about us anymore. It will be about marriage and having an heir, and this is still new for us. I want us to enjoy it a little while longer without that pressure.” With a gentle smile, he pressed a soft kiss on her nose. “I’m not quite ready to share you yet.”
“Yet?” She repeated questioningly, her eyes lighting up.

“You caught that, huh?” Zan chuckled.

It was the truth. Every second he spent with this woman, the more certain he was that she was the one he wanted to spend his entire life with. And someday soon, he hoped he’d be able to do just that. Their lips met in what was supposed to be a tender kiss, but soon became heated as Zan gripped Inara’s waist even tighter and Inara’s fingers slid into his hair, gripping his head. When they finally broke apart, they were breathless.

Inara could feel Zan’s arousal pressing against her stomach and she couldn’t help but laugh a little. This man was insatiable when it came to her and she loved it. But the sound of the fireworks going off broke the moment.

“Sorry, your Highness,” she said, giving him a quick peck on the lips before stepping away from him. “It’s time to get back to your guests.”

Zan groaned in frustration as he grabbed his jacket and put it on. Grabbing Inara’s hand, he allowed her to lead him back to the ballroom.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Two days later, Inara found herself sitting alone on a park bench, anxiously fiddling with her fingers she watched the crowds of people passing by. They all looked so happy. Going on their strolls, having their picnics. They were all so blissfully unaware of the impending disaster coming their way. I envy them, she thought to herself. They could all enjoy their lives while she remained burdened with knowledge that she never asked for. Her only hope was that Kivar could help her save the people she loved. Though, so far, Kivar hadn’t really been much help. Realistically, she understood that it was unreasonable to expect him to be able to decode a dead language in two weeks, but the non-reasonable part was tired of sitting around doing nothing. She needed answers.

She’d barely been able to contain herself when Kivar had sent her message the other day, asking her to meet him. And as she sat there, scanning the park for any sign of him, she felt herself growing increasingly impatient.

She practically jumped off the bench when she finally spotted Kivar coming down the path, looking incredibly dashing in his Zantarian uniform. She could see why women were attracted to him. He had a charisma that just made women gravitate to him. But he’s not Zan, she thought with a tiny smile as she pictured the man who had stolen her heart. “So, you have something?” she blurted out before he could even open his mouth.

Kivar smirked in amusement. “Well, aren’t we eager this morning.”

A blush formed on her cheeks, realizing her rudeness. “I apologize. I’ve just been on edge since our last conversation.”

“I understand.” He nodded as he took a seat on the bench. Inara sat down next to him. “Unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck getting more information from the book and what little we’ve gleaned is useless without the second book.”

“What about that woman?” Inara asked, frowning as she tried to remember the name. “Lar-el? Have you been able to find her?”

With a disappointed sigh, Kivar shook his head. “I have people searching, but this woman is really good at not being found.”

Inara slouched against the bench, feeling defeated. “So, what do we do now?”

Kivar was silent for a moment, looking conflicted. Finally, he spoke. “You said the visions started after you got that necklace?”
“Yes.”

“Would you be willing to touch the book? To see if you have another vision?”

Immediately, Inara felt her body tense up. As much as she wanted to help save her planet, she couldn’t stop the sense of dread she felt at the idea of having another vision. She spent so much time trying not to see those dead bodies and her home world being destroyed. She didn’t know if she was brave enough to endure that again.

“Isn’t the book in your father’s safe?” She reminded him. “How are you going to get to it?”

“I have my ways,” he replied with smirk. When she didn’t smile back, he gently took one of her hands in his, turning his body in her direction. “Inara, I know you’re scared. And if there were any other way to get the information we need, I would do it. But this might be the only way.”

Inara knew he was right. As much as she hated these visions, they were a big key to saving Antar. Resolved, Inara nodded her head, a look of determination in her eyes. “I’ll do it.”

Kivar smiled and gently squeezed her hand. “You’re a very brave woman.”

Inara noticed the uncomfortable way Kivar’s hands lingered on hers and when his thumb started stroking her palm, she immediately pulled her hand away, not wanting to give him the wrong impression.

The silence was awkward as Kivar tried to ignore the sting of pain at her rejection. After a moment, he stood, straightening his uniform has he did. “I’ll be back in a few days with the book.”

Inara looked up at him and nodded before he walked away. She watched his retreating figure, hoping that working with him wasn’t a mistake.

Hi Cocogurl,

Thank you for updating, I’ve missed this story and I love the update. I’m so glad we got some Zan and Inara loving. I’m wondering when Inara is going to tell Zan about her dreams? I don’t like Kivar being around Inara. Is Kivar going to hurt Inara? Why can’t Zan father see how much Zan is in love with Inara?

Please keep up the great work

I'm so glad to see the site back, and especially this update.
I love that Zan and Inara are bonded, and are so much in love.
The rules have changed with the hidden passages......and how very handy they are to Zan's bedroom.
Can't wait for more,
Carolyn

Chapter Twenty
“All right, boys, drink up!” Rath’s friend, Zayne shouted as he brought a tray full of shots to the table. All the men hooted and hollered as they took their drinks. Rath shook his head when offered one, though, his mind somewhere else. The soldiers arrived in Antaros almost a month ago and so far, they were no closer to finding any members of the Church of Light. He was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to attack. Maybe someone tipped them off about the village having extra protection, he wondered. If that was the case, they’d probably move on from here.

“Aww, what’s the matter, Rath?” Zayne asked with a slight slur as he slapped Rath on the back. Clearly, he was intoxicated.

As Zayne reached for another shot, Rath quickly grabbed it from his hand and set it back on the table. “I think that’s enough for tonight,” he said. “And it’s nothing. I just have some stuff on my mind”

“Missing princess Vilandra, eh?” He asked with a chuckle. “Don’t worry, once we take care of these bastards, you’ll be back in her arms.”

“I know,” Rath muttered, inwardly cringing at the thought of his last moments with Vilandra. She’d barely even looked him in the eye when he had departed. They’d been married for a couple of months now, and while he knew they would never be in love with each other, he had hoped they’d at least be able to have a friendly partnership. But since the wedding, Vilandra had become increasingly distant with him, even hostile, almost as if she blamed him for her unhappiness. The sense of bitterness building between them broke his heart. She used to be one of his closest friends and now…

In frustration, he grabbed the shot he had just taken from Zayne and chugged it, enjoying the warm, burning sensation sliding down his throat. “I’m going to get another,” he said as he got out of his seat and headed towards the bar.

He froze in his tracks when his eyes caught sight of a familiar head of luscious blond hair and a face that had invaded his fantasies on more than one occasion. “Coraline?”

At the sound of her name, Coraline turned around in her stool and her eyes widened in surprise before a smile spread over her lips. “Rath? What are you doing here?”

Rath chuckled. “It’s nice to see you too, Coraline.”

Still smiling, Coraline rolled her eyes and stood up from her seat. “You know it’s nice to see you. I just wasn’t expecting it.”

“I’m here on assignment,” he answered as he sat down on one the vacant bar stools. “Some religious nutcases have been kidnapping young girls.”

Though brief, Rath noticed a shift in her demeanor. Her smile dimmed a little and she looked almost uncomfortable. But the very next moment, it was gone and Coraline gave him a flirty smile as she sat down next to him. “So, do you have time to have a drink with an old friend?” She asked, looking hopeful.

“I see no harm in that.” His own smile got bigger.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Three hours and several drinks later, Rath and Coraline exited the bar together, both feeling a pleasant buzz from the alcohol and each other’s company. As Rath walked her home, they continued to catch each other up on their lives, smiling and laughing as he did. Rath had almost forgotten what it was like to enjoy himself with a woman who enjoyed being with him as well. It felt good. They both came to stop at her front door and waited, neither one of them ready for their time to be over.

“Thanks for walking me home, Rath,” Coraline said.

Rath smiled. “Well, what kind of person would be if I allowed such a beautiful woman to walk home by herself with everything going on right now.”

Coraline’s cheeks reddened at his desire to protect and a wave of heat rushed through her body. Gods, all she wanted to do was drag this man inside, strip his clothes off and have her way with him. But he’s married, she reminded herself as she tried push down her desire for him. No point dwelling on something she could never have. “So, is it true about those extremists?” She asked, trying to focus on something else.

Rath’s smile faded. “They’ve been doing it for months. Coming to towns that vulnerable and taking young brunettes.”

“What do you think they’re after?”

“Does it matter?” Rath bit out angrily. “Nothing they want is worth the pain they’re putting these girls through.”

Rath couldn’t quite discern the expression that crossed Coraline’s face. Almost immediately, though, it was gone as if it never happened. And before he could say anything about, Coraline leaned up and pressed a kiss to his cheek. That’s all it was, but the softness of her lips stirred something inside of Rath, something he knew he wasn’t supposed to be feeling. Her lips lingered on his cheek a moment longer than would be considered appropriate before pulled back and turned away from him.

“Goodnight, Rath.”

Quickly, Coraline entered her home to avoid whatever reaction Rath might have to that kiss. Once the door slid shut behind her, she locked it. With a tired sigh, she began stripping her clothes off, tossing each layer on to the floor as she headed towards her bedroom. She went into her closet and reached for a flowy, black robe, pulling it over her head before stepping deeper into the closet and pulling back a thick, brown curtain.

Her evening with Rath had filled her with so many mixed emotions—lust being the primary one. But she wouldn’t allow herself to be distracted from her purpose. She’d come too far. With a wave of her hand, the closet was suddenly illuminated by three candles sitting at a table against the back wall of the closet. At the center of the table, stood a gold statue of the Goddess Illyria. Kneeling in front of the table, she closed her eyes and clasped her hands together, praying for the strength to complete her mission.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
“Gods! Zan, is it always this intense?” Inara asked, panting heavily as she lay her body over Zan’s, enjoying the sound of his heart pounding in his chest. After her father and everyone else had gone to bed, Zan wasted no time climbing up the trellis and into Inara’s bedroom where they preceded to make love at least three times before collapsing against each other in a sated heap.

“Only with you,” Zan smiled, stroking her hair as their bodies continued to cool down. Even though he couldn’t see her face, he knew she was blushing. She always did when he complimented her, as if she still couldn’t believe that what he was saying was true. But he meant every word. It almost scared him how much she made him feel sometimes.
“Do you think anyone heard us?” Inara asked as she started placing soft kisses along his chest, making her way up his body.

“I think if you’re father heard us, I’d be a pile of ashes by now.” He was trying to concentrate, but the feel of her lips against his skin was driving him insane.

“That’s true,” she chuckled against his neck. “Would it be worth it?”

“Absolutely,” Zan breathed out as she began to playfully nibble on his earlobe. His fingers clenched tightly as he felt his lower half stir to life again. In one swift move, he flipped Inara onto her back and pulled away from her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “So, tomorrow evening I was thinking we could go out to dinner together.”

Inara’s eyes widened in surprise. “Zan, people will see.”

“Don’t worry. I rented out a restaurant for the entire night. It’ll just be you and me.”

The boyish excitement on Zan’s made Inara’s heart skip a beat. She loved seeing him so happy. But just as she was about to say yes to his very appealing proposal, she suddenly remembered what she had planned tomorrow evening and her enthusiasm faded. “It’s really tempting, but I have other…plans,” she said, cringing at how pathetic her lie sounded.

“What plans?” Zan asked curiously.

Her mind froze as she tried to come up with a believable excuse for cancelling his plans. Inara hated lying and she wasn’t even very good at it, but what choice did she have? If she told him the truth about why she couldn’t go to dinner with him—that she was going to see Kivar—she’d have to tell him the truth about everything. And she wanted to wait until she had more proof about her visions before she opened this discussion again.

“Oh, I promised I’d visit Serena tomorrow,” she stated simply, praying her couldn’t tell how hard she working to appear casual.

“Can’t you tell her that you’re sick?” He asked, giving her a playful pout. “I really want to take you out.”

“I would, but she really wants to spend time with me,” she said, giving him a quick kiss. “But I promise I’ll make it up to you.”

With a disappointed sigh, Zan nodded as he climbed on top of Inara, happily sliding his hips between her opening thighs. Their lips met, slow and sensual while his eager hands began exploring her body, making their way down her soft legs to lift them higher up on his hips. “You know,” he said huskily. “I can think of some ways you can make it up to me right now.

The mischievous glint in his eyes made Inara smile. “Again? Aren’t you tired yet?”

Zan gasped, feigning offense at her question. “How dare you?! My endurance is endless!”

With a giggle, she pulled Zan’s face down to her and this time the kiss was hungry, more demanding as they felt their bodies beginning to heat up. “We’ll see about that,” she said breathlessly, and all conversation ceased for the next few hours.
