Chapter 10

“I needs to get stuff.” Lonnie walked away from the group; she knew she was running away from the situation. She needed a breather, and never noticed the tall, lanky guy following her.

“I know it’s hard to take, but she’s got a point. Fixing this, she won’t happen. You need to get over your self and see the bigger picture.” Alex stood behind her, his arms crossed.

“Yous don’t know whats its like. I’s a princess of a burned out planet. I’s barely ‘member it, but those dim flashes is what kept me going, whiles living in dis squander.” Lonnie whipped around, her eyes narrowed. “You’ves always known dis planet is your pad. You can’t ‘magine what its like ta dream of… some’ing more den dis, and knowings once, yous had it.”

Alex shook his head. “You’re right, I don’t. This isn’t just about you; we are talking about a massive scale. I found out from her how I died. One of our own kills me and makes it look like suicide. Do you understand the pain of knowing your own death? You say you have dim memories of Antar, but can you remember dying? No? I know exactly what happens, but I can’t have my little personal mental breakdown! Why?! We have to save the world. Suck it up and deal. That woman has seen more horror then you or I could imagine. For her, I’ll push away my need to break. For your King and family, you need to do the same.” Alex’s voice was steel and a notch beneath yelling. It was a loud bark that he didn’t realize he had in him.

Lonnie was taken back. She had figured he tagged along for technical stuff, and the moral support cheerleader. She was wrong. That boy was hiding some serious backbone, and the strength that was there would be needed if they were to win this thing. She just hoped the others were as strong as he seemed to be. She mentally pulled her head out of her ass.

“Yous right. I’s sorry.” Lonnie conceded as she grabbed a duffle bag. “Tell Aves, I’s get her kit too.”

Alex smiled. “I will.” He turned around and started to walked out. He stopped at the doorway, and turned his head. “You’re a good sister; don’t let your fears rule you,” then walked out.

Ava tried not to stare at Liz and Zan. It hurt. The look on each other’s face, it was everything Ava had wished for. The love, strength, and devotion were blatant, and ripped at the rapidly enlarging hole in Ava’s heart.

Kyle could see the pain in her eyes. His arms tightened in response. He reminded himself that she wasn’t Tess. His heart argued that any idiot could tell that. Tess would never allow herself to show that kind of emotion so blatantly. If eyes were the windows to the soul, someone had put shades up in Tess’s.

Ava looked away from the scene, and over at Kyle. She had just met him, and could admit that she found him attractive. There wasn’t an instant ‘I want to have your babies’ connection. But he gave her a sense of calm, something that she could barely remember.

Future Liz looked over at her army. She knew that she shouldn’t call them that, but in the end that’s what they were. These were the soldiers that would defend Earth. Zan was right, they were kids. Yet, they were already better then the world’s armies. These ‘kids’, so to speak, had already faced death head on.

She turned her head to Future Max. He stood there, arms crossed, glaring at Zan. She walked over, and placed a hand on his shoulder. He quickly looked over at her, and pulled her into his arms. It was the initiation that he was waiting for; she had taken the first steps.

“What are you thinking?” Future Max murmured in Future Liz’s hair.

“They’re ready. They don’t realize it. We just have to get the crew in Roswell ready.” Future Liz whispered into Future Max’s shoulder.

“What makes them more ready then… the Roswell set?” Future Max stumbled on words ‘Roswell Set’. It felt foreign on his tongue.

“Zan knows how to use the Granolith. Ava, Rath and Lonnie will follow his lead. They know that the best way to stay alive is to listen to me. We’ll have to do a lot more since younger Max doesn’t know anything about the Granolith; let alone what an active seal means.” Future Liz bit her tongue as active seal caused Future Max to stiffen. She didn’t want to remind him that she was dying, but it was a fact of life.

She could remember the pain as the seal activated. The power surged through her nerve endings, burning a path to her brain. The seal itself wasn’t painful, using its power to reinforce her own was.

“I don’t want to talk about that.” Future Max whispered forlorn.

“I understand.” Future Liz started to turn in his arms, as if to break away.

“No, you don’t.” Future Max tightened his grip, his voice an angry whisper. “I don’t like thinking about you dying, because some time between you kneeing me in the groin and walking into their crib, so to speak, I’ve taken a liking to you.”

“I’m not your wife, Max. I look a little bit like her, and you miss her.” Future Liz waved away his declaration. She broke free, and stormed out of the living room.

Future Liz’s display broke into the spell Zan and Liz seemed to be in. “What’s wit da Queenie?”

“Max seems to have upset her.” Liz looked over at Future Max. “What did you do?”

“The only thing I’ve ever done, Liz. Love you.” Future Max stormed out after Future Liz.

“He don’t. He dink he does. Dat’s me.” Zan’s arms tightened around Liz. His face buried in her hair. “We’s always suppose ta be.”

“I don’t believe in…” Liz started to say destiny, as Zan lifted her face to look him in the eye. As their eyes met, Zan leaned down to kiss her.

His tongue demanded entrance, as he slid his fingers through her hair. Their first kiss wasn’t like all the fairy tales speak of. It spoke of dirty promises, lust and a hint of passion... It was a fight for dominance. Rath and Kyle watched with almost a clinical detachment, both needing to know the winner. Ava hid her eyes in Kyle’s shirt, praying for the pain to end. The kiss played across her mind’s eye, images seared into her brain.

“You’s…” Zan started to speak, as Liz pulled him back to her embrace. They were like lions battling in a mating dance of raw sexual tension.

As they broke apart, Liz leaned against Zan’s chest gasping for air. Zan leaned back against the side of the couch, his fingers still entangled in her hair. He gasped for air as well, his chest pushing against Liz’s cheek.

Ava couldn’t handle the noise; the hastily swallowed breathes, soft sighs, and the creaking of the arm of the couch that had been a crutch for the now drained Zan leaned upon. They were like needles in her ears. Pulling away from Kyle, she walked to Lonnie’s room. Bumping into Alex, with a quick, soft apology, she never lifted her head.

What hurt the most wasn’t the emotion in Zan’s eyes, the leaning into each other for support, or even the messy, sex saturated kiss that left her only slightly hot and bothered. It was that she was beginning to like Liz. She never thought she could like the one who’d complete Zan, if nothing else, then for the fact that Ava couldn’t. But Liz was different, she wasn’t that Queenie, who held a pain so deep in her eyes, it was like an open wound on her face. She was strength. Most people when confronted by the power and presence of Zan allowed themselves to feel less. This woman not only didn’t back down, she fought him at every turn. Liz was every inch Zan’s equal, while Ava could barely stare down her own shadow.

Ava flopped down on Lonnie’s bed, as Lonnie pulled out a pair of pant. “I tolds Microchip to let ya knows I was grabbing ya kit.” Lonnie shook her head, as she turned to Ava. “What’s wrong?’

“What’s I worth? I’s not da Queen. Why I here?” Ava looked over at Lonnie, tears etched in her eyes.

“You’s Aves. Fuck dem! Dey’s all babble. We stick-it.” Lonnie grumbled as she threw a shirt into the duffle bag.

“I’s like ‘em. But I’s useless wit his Queen ‘round.” Ava sighed. “What’s worse is I’s like her.”

“She do stand up to ‘Da Man’. I dink he likes it.” Lonnie shook her head. “Aves, don’t worry bout dem. What’s wit da jock you’s hanging off of?”

“No’ing. He’s baggable.” Ava shook off the self pity she had wrapped herself in.

“Den, Bag him.” Lonnie smirked. “Good ta see ya back. No more gloom and doom. Leaves dat to Queenie. It seems ta be her ding.”

Zan could feel the stares on him. They taunted him with knowledge of his self control, or lack there of. He could feel each strand of her hair wrapping it’s self around his fingers; caressing them, and trapping him. Her lips tasted like orange flavored gloss, as her tongue tasted of chocolate and all things decadent. He wanted to lose himself in her. He could feel her move against him, as he flexed his fingers.

A moan tore through Liz’s lips as Zan massaged her head with his fingertips. He tasted like spice, and curry. She rolled her tongue around her mouth again, as if to capture any of his taste that had escaped. She knew she loved Max, but after kissing Zan she knew how much she loved Max. He was her first love, sweet and gentle; while Zan ran through her blood like lightning dance over her skin. With Zan, love would never be docile, and there was no escape. She was his. The power Future Liz had manifested could be felt curling around her middle. It pulled at her, begging for release.

The moment was broken by Rath coughing. “Sorry, I dink I swallowed my tongue.” Rath looked embarrassed and antsy. “Someone gots camera? We can big buck it wit da show dey put on.”

Kyle blushed, embarrassed to be caught staring. “Like America’s Funniest Home Videos?”

“Naw. Porn.” Rath leered at Liz, before backing off quickly at the look in Zan’s eyes; the look that screamed to not stare at his woman. “Just joking, Duke. Da Queen is yours.”

Alex stood just outside of Lonnie’s room, shell shocked. His eyes wide and mouth dropped open in amazement. “I’ll be at the Yukon if anyone needs me.” Alex spoke slowly as he blinked. He walked out, stiff with shock. This wasn’t what he had expected to walk into; Liz and Zan fighting, yes, Liz and Zan making love with their tongues, not even close. Alex pondered on how this would affect their mission, as he made his way to the car, hoping he didn’t get lost along the way.

“I needs ta talk wit my Queen in private.” Zan stood up, his fingers loosing its grip. A hand slide down to take hers. As their fingers intertwined, Zan led Liz to his bedroom. He closed the curtain, with a look at Rath and Kyle to find somewhere else to be.

“I dink we needs ta pack da car. What’s bout ya?” Rath looked away from Zan’s closed room.

“I was thinking the same. Plus, have you ever thought of Buddhism. I mean, you already are reincarnated, so to speak.” Kyle shrugged off the strange feeling of wanting to find Ava instead.

Rath rolled his eyes as he started back out of the sewers. “Jock, we’s need ta get you new liners. Plus, do I’s look like da type to pray to a fat man statue?” Rath and Kyle started to bicker as they made their way to the car.

Chapter 11

Zan glared at his General and the Roswellian Ava seemed to have attached herself to. He didn’t want them interfering with the conversation. If it was up to him, it would have been more, but one look in the direction of Liz killed that thought.

“What do you want to say to me? We aren’t having sex. I barely know you.” Liz wrapped her arms around her stomach, her head lowered as if to study her feet.

Zan grabbed her arm, his other hand lifted Liz’s lowered glaze to meet his eyes. “You knows me bett’r den anyones. You sees… you sees me.” His eyes pleaded with her not to lie to herself.

“I don’t want this.” Her eyes filled with tears. “I just want to be a girl in love with a guy. I don’t want to have to deal with ‘Destiny’ or anything else like that. I just want to be…”

“You’s never want ta be norm. Dat never bothered ya. I see’s it. Stop running. I’s here.” Zan knew he couldn’t be the King with her. She would never take his shit; it was one of the things that drew him to her. The connection with her was instantaneous. He had dreamt of the legends of ‘The Connection’. It hadn’t been proven to exist, it was a fairy tale. Yet, here in the middle of nowhere, on a planet that if up to the universe would just be a post-it note on side saying ‘Planet Here’, he found the other half of his soul.

“Then what? Are you going to stay in Roswell? You said you didn’t want to play ‘buddy buddy’ with Max. Are you coming back here? I can’t live in New York. I have a life, a good life, in Roswell. My family’s there. I want to graduate from high school. I want to go to Harvard. Can you give me those things? We live in two different worlds! You thrive on your alien-ness! I just want someone to take me to Prom!” Liz could feel the tears fill her eyes. The pain of knowledge it ripped into her. She knew she’d never love anyone else like she loved him, but in the great scheme of things they were destined never to be.

They were worst then Star-crossed lovers, but at least Romeo and Juliet had died together, never realizing what they’d left behind. Liz knew what it would do to her family if she disappeared without a trace. She wasn’t eighteen; she had no choice on how she could live her life. And to be even more honest with herself, she could never allow herself to live down in the sewers when she knew she could do better for herself; when she deserved better.

“Is dat what’s you’s care bout? We’s can die any tick, and you’s up in arms bout Prom.” Zan knew what it was doing to her, but he couldn’t stop. It was killing him too. Zan didn’t know how to explain that it was going to be ok, because it wasn’t. She was right; he wanted to stay in New York. He had expected her to stay with him too. Pain echoed and reverberated through their connection, trapped as if caught in a loop it multiplied. He fought the tears back but couldn’t stop from lashing out. He just wanted this to end, for her to say she would stay.

Liz sat down on the bed, her tears made rivers down her face, as her eyes were glassy with disbelief. “I can’t stay. You know that.” Her whisper came broken, and soft.

Zan knelt at her feet, his eyes level with hers. “Den just pretend. Lets us pretend til Future You books it, dat we has all da time. I wants ta savor it.” His hand cupped her face, as he leaned over to kiss her eyelids, his lips tasting the salt of her tears.

She nodded, not trusting her voice. The heartbreak was written on their faces as clearly as the graffiti sprayed on the walls behind them. Liz cleared her throat, and gave Zan a watery smile. “I love you.”

Zan’s smile mimicked Liz’s, as he leaned close to her ear. “I’s know.”

Liz laughed slightly, the sound wet with mucus and tears. “How did I figure you to be a Han Solo type?”

Zan smirked, his eyes still held the sadness of heartbreak. “You knows all of me.”

“And in this moment, we have forever.” Liz whispered before leaning in to kiss him.

Future Max wasn’t sure what way Future Liz had gone. He didn’t mean for her to know. How does one tell the identical twin of your wife, who is for all intents and purposes your wife, that you love her? Not only that you love her, but that you love her as much as you love your wife.

Future Liz slid down the wall of the sewer. Her chocked sobs reverberating against the walls so loud that she swore everyone in New York could hear her, maybe even New Jersey.

He found her there, her sobs quieted to small hiccups. “You can’t love me.” Her voice was soft, but firm. “You aren’t allowed to love me. I’m not her. I’m broken and not worth it.”

“You still have her in you. The woman I fell in love with is you. No matter what version of Liz I meet, I’ll always love you. You fight. You fight for what you believe in, the ones you love, and you won’t back down. Not even when the rest of us have. I love you, Liz.” Future Max sat down next to her.

“You deserve better.” Future Liz leaned against him.

“So do you,” Future Max whispered back.

Future Liz shook her head, and held on to his arm. “What do we do now? I didn’t factor this into the plan. The Granolith didn’t show me this.”

“Maybe you were supposed to find this on your own. You might have been one with the Granolith, but you aren’t all seeing.” Future Max smiled softly. “You are fallible. It comes with being part human; at least that’s what my wife told me once.”

“She was a smart woman.” Future Liz looked up at him, her voice watery but strong.

“Yes, she and you are.” Future Max pulled Future Liz into his lap. “You are more a leader then I’ve ever been. You’ll lead us to saving the future.”

“I never wanted that job.” Future Liz leaned her head against Future Max’s chest.

“And that’s why you’re perfect for it.”

“Can we stay like this for a little while?” Future Liz looked up at him.

“As long as you need,” Future Max tightened his hold, a hand stroking her hair.

Rath and Kyle had found Alex looking confused at a fork in the tunnels.

“Dis is why yous wait for us.” Rath pushed at Alex’s shoulder.

Alex jumped slightly, deep in thought. He turned to see Kyle and Rath standing there with expressions of amusement. “What?”

“You’s ears blocked by dat brain of you’s. You’s dink too much. Timmy it.” Rath smirked.

“What does that mean?” Kyle looked over at Rath. He was able to understand some of Rath’s slang, but that had him completely stumped.

“Timmy it. I’s be Lassie. Except I ain’t no dog.” Rath rolled his eyes and shook his head.

“Ok, how are you not a dog? With the exception of walking on two legs… I mean you’re hairy, smell funny, and you probably drink out of toilets.” Kyle mocked.

“Jealous. Green’s no good.” Rath smirked, “Not my fault you’s like a girl.”

“Ok, we’ve traded insults; can we get back to the car? I don’t trust these tunnels.” Alex looked around nervous.

“I’s promise dat da rats won’t get ya.” Rath motioned to the correct tunnel. “And des the biggest down here.”

The three made their way to the surface.

Kyle offered up a prayer of thanks to Buddha for finding their car and belongings still intact.

“Yay…” Rath voiced in a very flat and bored tone. “What’s we do now?”

“Wait.” Alex rolled his eyes and got in the car.

“For what?” Rath huffed, and got into the car as well. “I’s got no of my kit.”

“Then hopefully Lonnie is getting your stuff.” Alex shrugged. “We wait for the next part of this trip. What would we do down there? Wait for Lonnie and Ava to come out? Watch Zan and Liz make out? Figure out where Future Max and Future Liz went?”

“Maxie Pad told Queenie something, got her ragging. Dink it was ‘bout da mushy crap.” Rath shrugged. “She rans out, wit him puppy styling it.” With a blank look on both of the other guys’ faces, Rath rolled his eyes again. “He’s followed her outta der.”

“And Zan kicked us out so he could ‘talk’ to Liz.” Kyle grumbled.

“Liz would never sleep with Zan.” Alex shook his head.

“Whys? We’s too low for da likes of ya?” Rath bristled at the insult.

“No! Liz is the kind of girl that’s going to wait for marriage.” Alex threw his hands up in the air. “She didn’t give it to Max, and she isn’t going to give it to Zan with knowing him less then a day.”

“So they’s going ta talk? Yeah, right.” Rath rolled his eyes.

Ava knocked on the window, with a sad look of pain. “They’s fighting.”

“I’ds figure you to be giggles and cheers for dat.” Rath sneered. He wasn’t sure what her main malfunction was, but Ava needed to get over her jealousy.

“You’s knows what, for a second a bit of me was. But they’s sound hurt. And as much as I loves him, I don’ts want him in pain.” Ava glared at Rath, for dragging her pain into this.

Lonnie opened the back end of the Yukon and threw in two bags. “Figured you’s all got kicked out. Rath, got’s stuff for ya too.” Lonnie’s head hung. “They’d sound’s so broke when we’s left. Now we’s imaginary friends it.”

“Huh?” Kyle had that confused look on his face, the one that happened usually when Rath was using his slang.

“We’s pretend none of us knows.” Rath explained to Kyle, who had pulled Ava into his arms.

“We’s just have to goes on like norms.” Ava cuddled into Kyle’s embrace. She looked up at him with heartbroken eyes, her whispered voice soft enough for only Kyle to hear. “When I heard her yell about her life and his not synched, I hurt. I gets that he’s nots mine. I don’t wants him now. She’s made him… not taking seconds. And I don’ts wanna be seconds no more.”

“I never thought you’d be happy for their pain. You aren’t that kind of person.” Kyle whispered back, against her ear.

Alex sat, almost like a solider on watch, in the middle row. He’s eyes trained on the back window. From the corner of his eye, he could see Ava and Kyle talking, as well as Lonnie and Rath bickering as Rath pulled Lonnie into the back. “And we need to shut up. They’re coming this way.”

Both Zan and Liz looked like they had been in an emotional train wreck. Their hands firmly clasped together, as if drawing strength. Red rimmed, wild eyes that begged not to be questioned were painted on tear stained faces.

Zan opened the door to the Yukon and helped Liz into the back. “We’s waiting on da Nursing Homes?” Zan got into the back, and pulled Liz into his arms. They seemed to mold themselves into a corner. “So we’s just wait.”

“Not for long, here they come.” Alex pointed out.

A visibly tired Future Liz walked out with Future Max’s arm around her shoulder. They looked like they had been through an emotional ringer. If it hadn’t been apparent that Future Liz and Liz were the same person, the same look of understanding their fate written on their faces just hit it home.

“Good, we all made it. Let’s start on this road trip from Hell.” Future Liz pulled herself into the driver’s seat. “And off we go.”

Chapter 12

The trip out of New York was uneventful; at least it was until Future Max got them lost in New Jersey.

“You aren’t allowed the map.” Future Liz grabbed the offending paper from Future Max’s hands. “Alex!” She threw it behind her. “You’re our navigator now. I’m going to turn onto US-1. Do I go north or south?”

Alex opened the map, and started to plot course.

“I’m calling you Wesley for the rest of the trip.” Kyle mocked as Alex muttered south.

“Ok, seriously, if any of us has a Star Trek addiction, it’s not me. Do you even know who Wesley is?” Alex turned to Kyle who was hiding behind Ava, who was sitting on his lap.

“Microchip, we all know Star Trek.” Lonnie grumbled.

“You’ve heard of it, but I doubt you could name off the characters.” Alex glared. He went back to the map. “If we get on the Pennsylvania turnpike, we can drive that through Ohio’s Turnpike. Once we get to Columbus, we’ll have to get on the regular highways. Once we hit St Louis, we can bounce onto I-44, then the Turnpike.”

“It’ll take about two, or three days.” Future Liz explained to the group. “Don’t piss off the one you’re sitting next to. It’s going to get very cramped. If need be, we can stop in St. Louis for the night.”

“What ‘bout piss breaks?” Rath butted in.

“Learn to hold it or use this,” Future Liz gave Rath a smile in the rearview mirror that rivaled the Mona Lisa as she offered him an empty soda bottle over her shoulder.

Rath leaned over the middle seat, taking the bottle. With a smirk, he pointed out. “If I's need ta go, I’s just piss out da window.”

Lonnie smacked him.

Ava turned to face Rath, and stuck her tongue out in disgust. Kyle took that time to stare in fascination of Ava’s tongue ring.

“Great, Liz. Did you have to give him an opening like that?” Alex huffed, as he covered his face with the map.

Zan and Liz seemed oblivious, as if they were tuning out the entire car.

“How’s far St. Louis?” Ava decided to break the tension.

“It’s about half way to Roswell. Now, if there aren’t any more questions, I’m going to continue driving.”

The first seven hours went relatively smooth, the radio was argued over, but other then that it was an easy drive. On the other hand, getting off the Ohio Turnpike was easier said then done. Future Liz could feel her blood pressure raise as the men in the car decided to argue over how much everyone should chip in.

Future Max had pointed out that he didn’t have money since he wasn’t thinking he was going to need it.

Rath grumbled that he didn’t realize that he was being forced to pay to save the world.

Zan, on the other hand, snipped that he didn’t want to even go to Roswell. Liz had hid her face in Zan’s neck as he growled. Her tears felt cool against his heated neck, snapping him back to the reality of the subject. He glared at Future Max for starting the argument over the cost of the toll, and whispered soothing words into Liz’s ear. He held her, feeling the heartache his careless words had brought. He whispered words of love, and devotion. The words lied of forever, the forever they both knew could never be.

Kyle just glared at the group, as Alex handed over to Future Liz a twenty from his wallet. “I do expect change back.” Alex cracked a much needed joke.

“I’ll pay for the next leg of toll roads.” Kyle explained to Alex, who threw him a grateful smile. “We, normal folks, need to stick together.” He could feel Ava stiffen in his arms. “We aren’t pulling a whammy on any of these people. Plus what else are we going to use the money for? Lizzie of the Future That Will Never Be won’t let me go to the strip clubs.”

“Is dat all ya dink ‘bout? Powers, Sex and Money?” Ava looked annoyed. “It likes talk’ng ta Rath.”

“I can’t usually talk about Powers. I don’t have any. Useless human, I think that’s Tess would call us. Sex and Money, that’s any man. We only have two emotions, hungry and horny.” Kyle laughed, trying to loosen the fear of the term ‘Normal’ from Ava.

“I’s not Tess. Just causes I look likes her, I’s Ava. You can’t ‘member dat den I dink I be sitting more wit Alex.” Ava glared. “You’s not useless, and who says you’s don’t gots powers. They’s dormant, but dey dere.”

“Great, no matter what I get to be a freak.” Kyle leaned his head against Ava’s shoulder.

“You’s dink we freaks?” Ava’s eyes flashed, hurt spider webbed through the anger.

“No! You are supposed to have powers. I’m the freak.” Kyle shook his head, which was still against Ava’s shoulder.

“Do you think I’m a freak? I have them. Is my younger self a freak too? She’ll get them, way before you will.” Future Liz pulled into the toll booth.

“Hi!” A mask of pleasant, wholesomeness slid into place as she paid the attendant. “Which way now, Alex?”

“I-70 West, we’ll want to be in that lane,” pointing to the lane next to them. “We’ll be on this for while.” Alex placed a hand on Future Liz’s shoulder, and squeezed her shoulder affectionately. He paused a moment before he turned and glared at Kyle.

“You’re a moron. You aren’t a freak. No one in this car is a freak. We’re in this together. You aren’t allowed to have a breakdown. We are all having our worlds turned on its axis. It’s not just you. Have you actually looked around? Lonnie, Zan, Rath and Ava have just found out that their home planet has been raped by the bastard who killed them. Liz has seen a horrible future where she’s the only one left. I get to know that Tess kills me. Max gets to know that all his meddling in the timeline has created that Liz,” Alex pointed to Future Liz, who was trying to concentrating on driving.

“You get to know that you’ve had a good marriage, mental powers and get to be in a coma. Hell, Kyle, cry me a river. None of us have had time to really digest the information given to us. We’ll have no time to have a freak out later. We’re in a car that is really crowded. I think we need a bathroom break, and a moment to breathe.” Everything Alex had bottled inside during the first seven hours came spewing out. He rubbed a hand over his face. “There should be a rest stop soon.”

The entire car was thankful when the car pulled into the rest stop. The silence from Alex’s outburst was almost deafening, and no one seemed to want to breathe.

“Ok, everyone out. Stretch your legs, and take this time to empty the bladders, I don’t want to stop until we get to St. Louis.” Future Liz parked the car, and turned to face the group.

“What’s wit you, and St. Louie?” Rath crossed his arms. He was tired, and this trip was hell at best. He understood why Queenie had told them not to piss off the one they were sitting with. The overly large car had gotten very small, very fast.

“Because, St. Louis is the biggest city we go through to get to Roswell. Blending in with the rest of the tourists for the night is easier. It’s also the half way marker between New York and Roswell. We get there; we know we’re half way home, at least home for the Roswellians.” Future Liz explained as the crowd dispersed from the car.

“Do ya needs ta gets out?” Zan looked at Liz, his arms still around her.

“I’m good. Let’s just enjoy the moment of quiet. We won’t be getting that back till we get to Roswell, maybe not even then.” Liz whispered, her hands clutching the arms around her.

“Kids, potty break. Out of the car!” Future Liz stuck her head in to look at the two.

“We’s enjoying dis moment. Leave us.” Zan glared.

Future Liz roll her eyes, muttering something about crazed children who didn’t understand the long drive to come. She walked to the bathroom, and was thankful that they were clean.

As she stepped out of the little building housing the restrooms and vending machines; she spotted a shack for free coffee. She noticed Future Max standing there holding a cup, chatting with the boy scouts and their mothers.

She walked over and was grateful as a cup was handed to her. “I needed this.” Her voice was thick with want, and gratitude. A sip later, she moaned a little. “Perfect.”

Lonnie and Rath walked up to them. “I’s don’t wanna get in dat car.” Lonnie looked twitchy.

Future Max and Future Liz looked over at each other, confused. The confusion deepened as Alex walked over to them as well.

“Who was in the car when we left it?” His mouth was turned down in a frown. His brow furrowed as if deep in thought.

“Why?” Future Max seemed even more intrigued.

“Come see for yourselves!” Alex rolled his eyes. “We are going to have to spray it down with cleaner or something first.”

The group walked back over to where they had left the Yukon, only to see it swaying back and forth.

“I left Liz and Zan in the car. They said they wanted a quiet moment.” Future Liz’s eyes went wide, as she sipped her coffee.

Future Max spit his coffee out in surprise. “That bastard! How dare he?! She’s not like that. She deserves better. What were you thinking?!” Future Max looked over at Future Liz.

“That they wanted to talk!” Future Liz handed her cup to Alex. “What was I supposed to think?!” Her arms and shoulders wind milling, showing her frustration.

“Oh, yeah Liz, that’s talking. Do you always talk to strange men like that?” Future Max pointed to the car.

“Please! It’s her choice! She can do what ever she wants.”

“I wants a shot at her too.” Rath leered. “She can’s do me what’s ever she wants too.”

“Who can do what? What are we talking about?” Liz asked walking up next to Alex, her hand firmly in Zan’s.

“But aren’t you?” Future Max pointed to the Yukon. His expression one of dumbfounded.

“Aren’t she what?” Zan growled.

Everyone’s eyes swung back to the Yukon as the back door swung open. A disheveled Ava and Kyle dropped out. Kyle buckling his pants back up, as Ava pulled down her skirt with one hand. In her other was a used condom. Both looked around, and blushed as they noticed the group standing there watching them.

“Whats?” Ava tilted her head as if she had no clue what was going on. She walked straight to the trash can and dropped the used condom in it.

“I’s so not sitting in da back.” Rath’s eye twitched. “Cause dat’s be nasty.”

“I’m reminded of the rule, no sex in the van.” Future Liz rubbed the bridge of her nose.

“Well you’s told me to bag him.” Ava smirked at Lonnie who was doing her impression of a fish out of water.

Kyle grinned sheepishly. “Hi?”

“I dink you’s owe my Angel an apology.” Zan grabbed Future Max’s shirt with one hand. “She’s classy. You’s have no ideas ‘bout her.”

Future Max stammered as Liz blushed. “I’m sorry that… that I thought… I’m sorry that I could think… that you would sleep with someone… in the car.”

Zan tightened his grip, and pulled Future Max closer. His amber eyes glittered like polished stones. “And dat’s you’d dink she’d fuck somebody’s she just met.”

“And I’m sorry that I thought you’d sleep with Zan after just meeting him.” Future Max wasn’t scared of Zan, but he didn’t want to start a fight. Also any negative thought about Zan’s honor, or love for Liz was squished in those moments.

“Dat’s better.” Zan let go, and pulled Liz into his arms. “We’s went for a walk. Queenie had’s a point. We needed ta loosen da legs.”

Alex handed Future Liz back her coffee. “So I figure Rath and Lonnie can switch spots with Kyle and Ava. That way Kyle and Ava can sit in the wet spot.”

Future Liz drained her coffee, and threw it away. “I’ll go de-funk the Yukon. Come on, Max, you have to help.”

“Why can’t the others help?” Future Max shook his head, as Future Liz stalked off. “I’ll never understand that woman.”

“Dat’s da point, you ain’t supposed to.” Rath smirked knowledgably as he waved Future Max away, years of living with Lonnie had taught him that.

Future Max walked to the Yukon as Future Liz started to clean up the mess left behind by Ava and Kyle’s meeting. “Why can’t they clean up their own messes?”

“Because they’re teenagers. You were one once. So was I.” Future Liz shook her head. “Don’t be too hard on them. They were seeking comfort. I mean for Ava she’s seeing the man she loves fall in love with another girl, and not only that, she’s also found out that if we hadn’t have gotten there, the people she loves would have killed him and hurt her. For Kyle, it’s losing me to the Czech Republic all over again.”

“What do you mean?” Future Max looked confused.

“Kyle knew I loved Max. Hell, he knew before I did. He could deal with that. He knew Max, he semi-trusted him. Now, here Liz is falling for another guy. Except instead of being safe like Max was, Zan isn’t anywhere near safe. Kyle knows she’s hurting, but there isn’t anything he can do to help. He needs someone to need him and Ava is giving him that chance.” Future Liz looked around the trunk area for any spots she had missed.

“I think we’re done.”

“Are you saying that to make me feel better about Kyle and Ava having sex? Or to make you feel better?” Future Max asked as he helped Future Liz out of the trunk area.

“Neither. Just wanted to remind you that you might disappear when this is all over… Hell, I’ll disappear when this is all over… but they don’t have that kind of luck. They’re left with what we give them. And the next time you decide to think I’m a whore, yell at the Liz that was forced to be one… Me.” Future Liz let go of his hand, and walked back to the group.

Alex stood in the middle, the map out, showing the route they were going to take. “So we’re going to stay on here. I figure we can pool our money and get a Motel 6 or something once we get to St. Louis. Future Liz has a point, we’ll blend in there. We just say we’re on a field trip. Not like there aren’t any tourist attractions there. Then we head out through the pan handle of Texas into New Mexico.”

“So, are we ready to get back into the newly defunkafied Yukon?” Future Liz pointed to the car. “Get in, or get left behind.”

Everyone piled into the Yukon. Zan and Liz took the same position as before, with the exception of having to share the back with Ava and Kyle, this time.

Rath rolled his eyes as Lonnie and Alex started to talk. He leaned forward and started to play with the radio, which got him smacked by Future Liz a lot. She stopped quickly when Rath asked if when they stopped for the night, if this treatment was available in hotel room style.

Future Max kept silent through most of the trip to St. Louis, until they stopped for gas. “This is no way this car has made it this far without needing gas. What did you do to it?”

“If I got into the science, I think Rath’s head would explode.” Future Liz reached back and pet Rath’s head. “So I used the kinetic energy of the car to basically make it into a rechargeable electric car, with gasoline tendencies. The engine now is storing energy when we slow down or stop for when we speed back up. Which is prolonging our gas, and making it burn cleaner.”

“If my’s head going ta expl’de ‘cause of da Mr. Wizard, why’s you expl’n’ng it?” Rath pushed Future Liz’s hand off his head.

“Do you really need that answered? Because if I do… Let’s just say the car is getting less crowded.”

“I don’t like the Queenie. I be guessin’ if ya boff da Queen ‘nough, she not pick up dat Bitch-ness.” Rath leaned back to talk to Zan.

“Please! Lizzie’s always been this bitchy. I just think Future Liz is on the rag.” Kyle hid behind Ava as Liz tried to smack him.

Future Liz lifted a hand from the steering wheel to flick Kyle off. “Pick a finger, Valenti, and sit and spin.”

“Promises, promises.” Kyle laughed.

Ava turned in her seat, and smacked Kyle lightly on the head. “He’s been punished.”

Liz laughed, and thanked Ava. It was a moment of bonding between the two girls. Ava and Liz knew it was a peace offering.

The entire car, with the exception of Kyle, seemed completely oblivious to what had just occurred.

Alex sat with his map on his lap, while talking to Lonnie about his band. It seemed to connect them in a way. Lonnie seemed enthusiastic about Alex’s vigor for music.

Rath was quietly, for once, observing the road. He sat as if ready to spring into action if anything were to happen.

Zan had his eyes closed, just enjoying the moment of Liz in his arms. Their connection wide open, and the love poured through both sides like a pressurized water main that had broken.

Kyle rubbed his head, watching Liz and Ava bond. It wasn’t how he had hoped they would befriend each other, beating on him. Yet, he could see why, in those few minutes of laughter, Future Liz’s eyes would soften when mentioning her friend.

Future Liz and Future Max released twin sighs of relief when the sign for St. Louis come into view.

“Ok, kids, now the fun part… What motel are we staying at?”

Chapter 13

NC-17 Part

Everyone was ready to drop when they pulled into the Red Roof Inn. After finding a payphone, and calling a half a dozen motels, Red Roof Inn won the Motel Lottery of being the cheapest.

Future Liz looked at the group. “Everyone, pool your money.”

Kyle grumbled as he pulled out one of the Future Liz-made hundred. “I’m expecting my own room.”

Alex and Liz pulled out similar bills.

“If dat don’t gets us rooms, I’ll suck off Timmy.” Rath bitched.

“Which one of us is Timmy?” Kyle twitched, and pulled Ava closer to him.

“Timmy.” Rath pointed his thumb to Alex.

“I’m good. No need to suck me off, Rath.” Alex squirmed in his seat.

“Gods, you’s all bitches. I just means dat three Bens… We’s be fucked if we can’t get rooms at da cheapest pad in town.” Rath rolled his eyes.

“Make dat four Bens.” Zan pulled out his wallet and added another hundred to the pile.

“You don’t have to…” Liz was hushed as Zan placed a finger to her lips.

“We Royals, we pulls our weight. Besides, I’s hoping for a room too.” Zan’s eyes bore into hers, pleading for her to say yes; to let them have just one night.

“I’m getting the rooms. Do we have any preferences?” Future Liz stuffed the money in her pocket, and jumped out of the car. “No? I’ll go see what they have available.”

Ava leaned her head against the window to watch Future Liz walk into the motel lobby. “She looks so alone,” Ava’s voice was a quiet whisper but against the silence of the car it seemed as if the entire world could hear her words.

“She’s gots ta ‘member, we’s in dis together.” Lonnie crossed her arms. “She can’t be Chuck Norrising it.”

“Chill, Lon.” Zan let go of Liz for a moment, and placed a hand on Lonnie’s shoulder. “She’s been Chuck Norrising it for too damn long. She’s gots da plans, and I for one, follow dem. Cause she’s seen shit we ain’t even dreamed.”

Future Max sat in the front, letting Zan’s words flow over him. They sank in with a clarity that was almost blinding… Her attitude toward him was almost schizophrenic. The realization that she didn’t know how to react to him and the situation that he presented, was like a ton of lead bricks. She was right when she said that the kids in the back were the one who where going to have to pick up the pieces when she and he disappeared. Future Liz hadn’t mentioned that there didn’t seem to be a given time limit on when that was going to happen. They could have seconds together or years. Future Max was certain that was what scared Future Liz the most.

She had been on her own, so to speak, for so long. The lone wolf protecting her cubs, and now she didn’t know how to deal with Future Max half the time. There was love there, he knew it in his soul, but she had been so damaged, as tainted as the Granolith in her future, that wasn’t certain that she could allow herself to grasp at that love.

Alex’s voice pulled him out of his musings. “So, how are we splitting up the rooms, depending on how many she can get?”

“I already called a room, as did Zan. I figure the ‘Rents get another. I don’t know if someone would like to share…” Kyle looked slyly at Ava. “How about it, Aves?”

“I knows where I’s bunking den.” Ava kissed Kyle softly.

Rath made a gagging sound, and then stared at Alex. “Microchip? I don’t wants da car. But da floor in ya room might kill me too. So if you’s and Lon going hook up, I take da car.”

Lonnie pouted. “Can’ts I have both?”

Alex’s eyes went wide, as he chocked on air.

The car laughed as Rath shook his head. “I’s can share, but I’s be Doubting Thomas dat Micro is da same ways.”

Kyle looked happy. “I totally got that one!”

Everyone groaned as Kyle looked around with a ‘what’ look on his face.

“So, if it’s four or five rooms, we have a plan.” Liz nodded. “If it’s two or three, we bunk by gender.”

Zan squeezed Liz’s waist slightly. “Let’s hope da four or five.”

“She’s on her way back.” Future Max’s voice was a monotone, his eyes never leaving the figure walking to the car.

Future Liz motioned for the crew to get out of the car. “I got four rooms. Be thankful, two reservations had canceled a few hours ago. We got very lucky, or it would have been very cramped.”

“So, Microchip?” Rath raised an eyebrow.

“If I wake up with you groping me… just remember this, always, I might not have powers, but I can kill you with my brain.” Alex rolled his eyes as he snagged the key Future Liz held out to him. “Hopefully this has two beds.”

“That’s why I held that key out to you. It’s the only one with two beds. The rest are single queens.” Future Liz glared as Kyle and Rath opened their mouths to comment.

Kyle held a hand out for a key. “Please tell me we don’t share a wall.”

“Why?” Future Max rolled his eyes.

“Cause Lizzie’s loud. I heard about biology class… Getting a pencil, my ass.” Kyle pointed at Future Liz, as Liz blushed.

Future Liz shrugged. “I’ve learned to be quieter.” She then gave a small smile that reminded Kyle of the movies, just before the killer stabbed the person in the neck for no reason.

“What pencil? Can I’s get da pencil for Queenie too?” Rath wiggled his eyebrows. “You’s don’ts gotta be hush hush. I like it whens dey scream.”

Liz blushed an even brighter red.

“What’s dis about a pencil?” Zan looked down at a bright red Liz.

“I’ll tell you in the room.” Liz squeeked.

“Zan, treat her like a lady. It’s me, I’ll know.” Future Liz threatened as she handed Zan his key.

“She’s my queen.” Zan growled, his look said it all.

Future Max tried to hid his distaste for the situation, but he wasn’t very successful.

“That leaves us, Max.” Future Liz motioned to the group to scatter and get their things. “We have to check out by eleven am. I’m waking all of your asses up at nine thirty. And I’ll be perky.”

“You are a scary woman, Liz.” Kyle shook his head at the younger Liz. “Very scary.”

The group went their separate ways to their rooms. Future Max fumed as he followed Future Liz to their room.

“You do realize that you gave Zan the ok to have sex with your younger self?” Future Max yelled softly so not bother the other guests.

“No, I gave myself permission to do what is in her heart. She loves him, as much as I loved you. She needs to know that when all is said and done here that she didn’t have any regrets. I was reminding her.”

“What about us, Liz? Do you have any regrets?” Future Max felt broke, all he had ever wanted was Liz. He knew in his heart, that now that the younger Liz had found Zan that she wouldn’t stay with Max. She wouldn’t do that to him, or herself. He knew that when he disappeared all the memories of Liz and Max as a couple from their junior year on would be wiped from this world. His younger self would be left pining for a woman who would be pining for his clone.

Future Liz’s fingers ghosted across Future Max’s face. “I could never have regrets with you.” Her eyes half lidded, as if to hide the fragile nature that was so stark beneath.

“Then let me not regret this.” Future Max leaned in, captured Future Liz’s lips with his and it was like coming home, for both of them. The taste and texture of each other’s tongue was savored like fine wine, their tongues battled in lazy well used tactics.

Future Max pulled Future Liz into his embrace, his hand sliding in her hair, while the other wrapped around her waist. It was new in some aspects, but in others, it was like they never left each other’s side.

Future Max looked down, and smiled. “It’s like it’s always been.”

“I don’t know if I can…” Future Liz looked away. “I’m damaged, Max. Khivar has… I’m not normal…about sex. I’m not sure if I can, willingly.” A tear slipped down her face. “I’d want to, with you.”

“Let’s see how far we can. I just want to be with the woman I love, any way I can.” Future Max wiped away the tear.

“Show me forever.” Future Liz leaned back up and kissed Future Max with everything she was.

Liz stared at the room. It wasn’t what she expected, yet she wasn’t sure what she expected.

“We’s can sleep. I just wants to holds ya, and not be in dat car whiles I do.” Zan motioned to the bed.

Liz stood in the middle of the room, her eyes going deer in the headlights wide as Zan pulled off his shirt.

“Whats?” Zan cocked an eyebrow at Liz.

“I’m… It’s…” Liz threw her hands in the air in frustration of not being able to communicate.

“Like I’s said, no need wit da sexing.” Zan smirked.

“Zan, don’t talk like this isn’t our wedding night. I don’t know why I know that, but I know what the connection we have is.” Liz bit her lip.

“I knows what’s it is. I dink dat since I’s connected to da Granolith, and you’s connected to me… you’s connected to da Granolith. Not hurtin’ none dat Queenie is connected.” Zan shrugged. “I’s wants ya. I wants ya in any ways you’s willing ta give. I love you, Liz. It’s da only t’ing in this loopy madcap dat makes sense. You’s dat light. I saws you in my dreams. Knew ya existed… Aves isn’t mine. Hell, I’s don’t want her. You, Liz, I wants you.”

Liz didn’t know why, maybe it was the pained truth in his eyes, or the way stressed that what he wanted was anything she was willing to give. She pulled off her shirt, and toed off her shoes. She walked over till she was practically chest to chest with Zan.

She looked up, her expression, naked with need. “Make me your bride tonight, Zan. Give me our wedding night.”

“As you commands.” Zan lifted Liz up against him, her legs curling around his waist. He brushed his fingers across her cheek, his gentleness once again surprising her. His thumb brushed over her lower lip before he kissed her, his teeth sinking into the bottom lip he’d just caressed, branding it, claiming her. Their tongues dueled in a teasing dance.

Her fingers tangled in his hair, as she moaned. She felt them move towards the bed, and ground herself into his crotch. She was aching in places she didn’t realize could ache. Their connection was wide open, feeding the flames of desire. In the plethora of emotions, regret didn’t exist.

Both knew what they were doing. In all ways Antarian, they were married, and this was their wedding night. It might not have been what Liz had dreamed of, but at this moment, it was better.

Zan lowered them on to the bedspread, and nipped at her neck. “I needs to get up. I realized, we’s got nothing.”

“Do we really need it?” Liz tried to sound sultry, but to her own ears it came out slightly comical.

“Liz, I loves ya too much not to have somt’ing.” Zan reluctantly let go of Liz. He pulled at her legs that were still wrapped around his waist. “Angel.”

“Don’t go.” Liz pleaded.

“If I don’ts go, we don’ts get a wedding night. I take care of ya. No heirs to da throne yet.” Zan smiled, as Liz finally unwound her legs from his hips.

Kissing her forehead, Zan placed a hand against the sheets. With a few pushes to the molecules, not only were the sheets cleaner then before they were bought, they were also a soft cotton.

Liz smiled. “How did you know?”

“I don’ts know about ya, but when we sexing, sliding ta get to ya isn’t da sliding I hads in mind.” Zan smirked, and kissed Liz again. He leaned over, praying that he was lucky.

The drawer contained its customary bible, the remote to the TV, and a lone condom sticking out of the bible. Zan could live with irony.

“I won’ts needs ta go out. God loves us.” Zan held up the condom.

“We’ll make the most of it.” Liz smiled, and leaned up. She rubbed her nose against his cheek, scrapping it against the day’s growth.

“Well, we’s need to get off dem jeans.” Zan played with Liz’s belt loops, pulling her against him by them.

“Whose jeans?” Liz felt weird being coy; she wasn’t used to the easy sexual teasing that seemed to permeate their alone time. Even when they were arguing back in his room, there was a sexual tension that saturated every comment, every dig.

“Both.” Zan wiggled his tongue ring at her as he pressed his tongue to his teeth for the word.

“What if it’s the worst sex you’ve ever had?” Liz bit her lip.

“Please! Dat’s not possible. I’s made love ta you millions time ‘ready, just dis time, is flesh time.” Zan shook his head, as he pulled the fabric of her bra to reveal a pink nipple to him. His goatee grazed across the sensitive skin, puckering it. The ball of his tongue ring was cold, in contrast to his hot tongue and mouth as he sucked on the puckered flesh. His hands unbuttoned and unzipped Liz’s jeans, as she cried out for more.

Her legs spread as wide as the taunt fabric would allow as Zan’s nimble fingers invaded her panties. Her fingers ripped at his hair as he pinched her clit firmly. Her back arched as he slid two fingers inside of her, her head writhing against the sheets. She had never felt like this before; so wanton, so needy. This was the only man who would touch her like this, and moaned his name as he curled his two fingers to make a crawling motion against one of her walls.

The pressure was building. His mouth transferred to the second nipple, still covered in fabric. His thumb flicked her clit back and forth as he pumped his fingers in and out of her. Her brain was awash with sounds and colors, as he feed their connection his love and need for her.

For a second all was quiet, as her mind went blank with pleasure. Her scream of completion echoed against the walls, as her orgasm flooded against Zan’s hand. Her eyes blind to his smile, as he pulled his hand out and proceeded to lick it clean.

“Angel… Sweetness, Angel. Now’s dat I’s got a taste, I needs it from da tap. You won’t deny you’s husband dat? Would ya?” Zan pulled off Liz’s jeans the rest of the way off, as she lay there, panting with need. Her eyes followed his motions as he slipped off her panties carelessly.

“I wants it all, Angel. Gives you to me.” Zan pulled a pillow down to help prop up her hips. His teeth nipped at her thighs as he opened her wider. His tongue shot electricity through her veins, as the tongue ring pressed against her clit. He lapped at her wetness, as her thighs clenched in pleasure. Her fingers still tangled in his hair, clenched in time with her legs.

Liz bit her lip, as Zan thrust his tongue in and out of her. Her hips rising with every thrust, as her toes curled in pleasure. Her head tipped back, baring her throat to her mate in a submissive nature, as the moans of pleasure ripped across her lips.

His growls of appreciation spurring her hip dilations, as he drank her essence like water. One hand holding her hip, as the other cupped her breast.

Her second climax hit her, as her legs tightened around his head; her voice hoarse from the first orgasm. Her body tightened like a bow string, taunt and arched. As she collapsed in exhaustion, a smile that rivaled the cat that caught the canary stretched across her face.

“You’s done?” Zan raised an eyebrow.

Liz realized that he still was wearing his jeans. His erection pressed against the fabric, as she shook her head; her hands guiding his head to meet hers.

As they kissed, Liz realized that she could taste herself on his tongue. The thought thrilled her in a dirty way, as she freed one of her hands to unbutton Zan’s jeans. Her hand touched the bare skin underneath, startling her again. She moaned against his mouth, as her hand stroked his straining flesh.

“Zan… Please… Make me yours. I want to have… you.” Liz begged.

He kissed her softly, biting her lower lip. His hand found the condom on the nightstand. Ripping the foil with his teeth, he rolled it on himself. “Pretend dere is no barrier.”

“I ache, Zan. Make it go away.” Liz strained against him.

With her cry of need, Zan pushed his way into her. His brow beaded with sweat as he grasped at his control. She was tight, and that only excited him more. As he reached her barrier, he looked at her with pleading eyes.

“Make me your bride.” Liz moaned, pushing at Zan to make her a woman in all ways.

The need to pull off the condom and let his seed take root, ripped into Zan with yearning he’d never felt before. Ignoring it he pushed deeper, her pain streaking through their connection. Zan pulled it into himself, wishing never to cause her that pain again.

They laid there for a moment, Zan fully sheathed in Liz. Their skin glowed as he pulled out, and started to push back into her. Their pace became more and more frantic as the light grew brighter, and their breath even more ragged.

Liz opened her mouth in a noiseless scream as she could feel her bones melt from the pleasure. Her blood boiled, as Zan’s pleasure rippled through the connection like a tsunami. Her fingernails clawing at his back, as her body clenched.

Zan could feel Liz hit her breaking point, her pleasure reverberating through his soul. The pleasure was too much, as he poured into her. The glow from their skin was almost blinding, as they lay sated. Zan pulled from her body to throw away the condom that he hated already.

He pulled her close as she pulled the sheets around them. The glow fading from their bodies, as did consciousness. As they slept, their dreams held possibilities that haunted, and teased them throughout the day.

Far from the dreaming couple; the Granolith lit up, its colors changing and twisting.

Death Is A Playground (UC/CC, Adult) Ch 14 ~ 8/28

Post by darkmoon »

Hi Everyone!! Yes, I'm back to my regularly scheduled DiP posts. ^.^ Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel.

Saavik ~ I'm glad it was hot enough to warrant an early bedtime for the kids! Yes, the Two Weeks are up. I'm fully recharged, and willing to give this story my all again. Thank you for missing me!!!

B ~ How could I not leave it there?! Granolith is a very mysterious device. Hence it only gets a sentence to explain itself. LOL. *Huggles* I hope you continue to enjoy the banter between the characters. ^.^

Carrie ~ Here!!! I promised I'd post today!! And here it is!! I'm glad you loved the update. And I'm glad I can show FLiz and FMax in all their glory. Zan and Liz... *Blushes* It has a reason... I'm not telling you. But it has a reason. ^.^

Vampy ~ Sweetie, Thank you for the Zan love!! I think we all wish we could have one. ^.^ The Granolith is strange and weird and doesn't explain itself... until the time is right. *Huggles* I'm glad that you loved this chapter. And your continued support is loved!!

Kay_B ~ The Granolith will become more important the more the story goes on. ^.^ I'm glad I have you intrigued.

Begonia9508 ~ Thanks for understanding!!!

C&N214 ~ I saw your post before the great reset happened. I'm glad you were able to catch up on all the chapters. What's going to happen to Tess is going to be in the next chapter... Or at least the meeting between NY and Roswell will. Thank you for your understanding about my break. I feel recharged, and excited to continue this amazing story. After Ava's comment in the show about Zan waiting for someone, it made me think maybe she was supposed to be with him. I'm glad you wondered that too. I hope you continue to enjoy this story!!

Jezebel Jinx ~ *BLUSHES* Thank you!!!!! I'm glad the FLiz/FMax romance is believable and works. I'm also thankful you find Kyle, Alex and Rath's banter as funny as I do. With Ava, I always thought that Ava would be the kind of person that would be hurt, but not jealous that the person she was in love with, loved another. I also think she loved Zan enough to know that she'd rather see him happy and with someone else, then always feeling like second place to what might have been. And I think Kyle is the kind of person, especially after he found Buddha, that can help with that. I mean a lot of people give Kyle hell for chasing after Liz the way he did. But I saw it as he was trying to make sure that someone he loved was okay. That she wasn't involved with drugs or anything else that could hurt her. I mean he went about it in the wrong way. But it shows that he cares. And like I explained, two people who are hurting usually find comfort in each other. I think FLiz missed the point that knowing what happens with Tess hurt Kyle. I hope this keeps with your expectations. Sorry for rambling. Ask Carrie, I love to talk about the characters and what makes them tick. ^.^

On With The Show!!!

Chapter 14

Liz awoke, realizing where she was, her hands clutched the sheets to her body. The sound of the shower filled the room. She could remember the night before; his tongue, his hands… She moaned slightly. Her body ached, she felt like she’d over exercised and had it not been for that physical side effect it would have all seemed surreal.

The memory of promising Zan always in the grass behind the rest stop floated through her brain. Their fingers entwined as they knelt in the grass, her eyes lost in his. The connection had blown open, thoughts merging.

She had married Zan in those moments. It was perfect, surrounded by nature. Even Future Max’s thought about the occupants of the rocking van couldn’t ruin that moment. Liz hadn’t felt married until they had arrived at the hotel.

Something had whispered through her brain that she was now a married woman. She wasn’t sure where it came from. The connection to Zan had never felt like that, nor had the connection to Max. It was softer, fleeting at best, and almost maternal in nature. Suddenly, Liz knew it was the Granolith. The voice held warmth she hadn’t thought possible from an object that had cause so much pain. She had reached for it, like she had to Zan in New York. The response had been exhilarating at best, but scary as hell at worst.

Max’s name clashed into the married thoughts. They fought, as a feeling of sadness embraced her. She didn’t regret Zan or anything that had happened with him. The knowledge that Max would have to learn that his clone/twin not only existed, but had married Liz, made her feel slightly guilty for the happiness she had found.

“You regret, don’t ya?” Zan stood over Liz, water still clinging to his body.

The fact that the shower had stopped fell on deaf ears, Liz was completely lost in thought. “What?” Liz looked up, slightly startled by Zan’s voice.

“You regrets making love ta me.” Zan’s voice was bitter and his face full of self loathing and anger.

“No.” Liz shook her head, her hands releasing the sheet, as she reached for him. “I’m over thinking things again. I have to understand the ramifications of this.”

“You seem’d pretty certain da rams last night as you’s begged me ta fuck ya with no rubber.” Zan growled, his arms crossed, as the feelings of loss and hurt spilled over the walls of the connection.

Liz got up; her face conflicted on whether or not to pull the sheet with her. A sigh came as Liz let her tightly reined control slip, and stood naked in front her upset husband. “I don’t know why I was so adamant about lack of condom. I mean, it is not like me. I can’t get pregnant; I’m a junior in high school. Harvard isn’t going to let me just waltz in with a child on my hip.” Liz bit her lip, as she looked down.

“You’ll get der.” Zan looked away; the feeling of awkward love permeated the walls of both sides of the connection.

“I love you.” Liz looked up. “I’ve always thought that I could control my feelings. Even when I was with Max, except for a few moments, I knew that I could control my life. That I knew where I was going, and how I was getting there.” Her voice broke off, her eyes filled with shame. “I loved him. At least I thought I did.”

“I knows.” Zan tried to keep the hurt from his voice, as it shaded his tone.

“No, you don’t. You think that this is just some little indiscretion from some small town girl. That after this, I’ll just go back to Max. That after knowing the love that I have for you that I can just go back to my little life with my shiny boyfriend. You don’t understand. This is it! I’ll go back to my little life, but I can’t give Max what he wants. I can’t give him me. I won’t settle for second best. I won’t let him try to be you.” Liz’s voice rose as she talked. As the last word fell from her lips, she was practically yelling.

Zan pulled Liz against him; as he leaned down to kiss her.

Liz wrapped her arms around him as she leaned into the kiss. Her love for him clawed at the walls of their connection, as she dropped her defenses.

The surge of emotion stunned Zan, as he dropped the last wall blocking the bond. He lifted his head, and looked at Liz in awe. “No one’s loved me likes dat.”

“Which is why I can’t give this up.” Liz leaned her head against Zan’s chest. Her eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know how I’m going to move with you across the country. I feel dead inside just thinking about it.” Tears welled up in her eyes.

“I don’ts know, Angel. I just don’ts know.” Zan murmured into her hair, as his arms tightened.

“I’ll be coming to get us soon.” Liz blinked back the tears. “We should get dressed.” Liz knew the only way she was going to get through this was to keep moving. The moment she stopped and thought about it, was the moment she’d break down. It was going to be hard enough sitting in the car for fourteen or so hours.

“You’s not going ta book it ta Dupe… You’s wasn’t kidding on dat?” Zan let his arms loosen as he looked away, feeling ashamed at need to hear her say the words again.

“Zan… You are it. What we have, I refuse to let myself have anything less then this. If it isn’t you, I don’t want it.” Liz rushed the words out, praying she didn’t break down. Her lips ghosted against his chest.

“I’s not going for nobodies who ain’t you.” Zan agreed, before moving away to find his clothes.

They broke apart knowing that soon Future Liz would be pounding on their door to get them ready to leave. A gloomy feeling settled in the room like dust across a reflective surface.

When the group met up in the foyer, Alex glaring at Rath. “I will kill you later when I’m fully capable of using the powers of my brain.”

“You’s fells sleepy bye in da wrong bed. I thought ya Lonnie.” Rath grumbled back. “You’s scream like a girl too.”

“You didn’t have to keep groping!” Alex yelped, as Kyle leaned against the wall for support as he laughed.

Liz hid her face against Zan’s chest trying to hide her laughter, while Zan smirked.

Lonnie crossed her arms. “Ya could ‘ave wait’d tills I got da camera sets up.” She scrunched her nose in disgust. “I miss’d having free porn by ticks!”

Ava shook her head, as she blushed against Kyle’s arm.

“Lonnie, you don’t own a camera.” Future Liz walked up, a cup of coffee in one hand, Future Max’s hand in the other.

“Oh god, the ‘rents got some!” Kyle shuddered as the laughter subsided, his arm going around Ava’s shoulders. “And thanks a lot, Shirley. You gave us the room with a wall connected to them!” Kyle pointed at Liz and Zan. “I knew you had a pair of lungs, but damn!”

Ava blushed. “We thoughts you’d be having da Sex Olympics in der.” She bit her lip, playing with the ring.

“I’m sorry.” Liz blushed.

“So’s everyone’s got some but us?” Rath pouted.

“If ya both wouldn’t has been wussy girls ‘bout sharing me, we’s could have been bang’ng da sheets too.” Lonnie folded her arms across her chest, the look of annoyance not wavering from her face.

Alex shook his head. “Not a chance in hell. I don’t like guys. I’m about as hetero as they come!”

“Come on! Everyone gots some buts me!” Lonnie sneered.

“What’s ya mean? I tapped jack!” Rath sneered back. “I’s not even playin it in da shower.”

Kyle stuck his tongue out in disgust. “TMI, dude!”

Everyone else seemed equally appalled by Rath’s sharing of knowledge.

“What’s?” Rath looked confused by everyone walking out of the motel towards the car.

“Can’s we ditch him?” Ava complained, “not’s like we don’t gots a spare!”

“We can’t get rid of him. He’s important.” Future Liz sighed, taking another sip of her coffee. She was being cryptic; which worried everyone, especially Liz, Kyle and Alex. She had been always forthcoming with knowledge of the future. This new tightlipped Future Liz wasn’t a welcomed sight.

The ride had been quiet until they had hit the panhandle of Texas.

“I’s swear, Armadillos aren’t alive. Dey born dead. I’s yet to see one dat ain’t dead.” Lonnie complained.

“They are elusive creatures…” Alex smirked. “And they hate you.”

“Fuck’s ya, Micro.” Lonnie glared.

“I would have, but you kept saying Rath had to join in.” Alex decided to roll with the punches.

Rath laughed. “We’s rubbing offs on ya.”

Liz smiled, and then whispered in Zan’s ear. “I love you.” She nuzzled his ear.

Future Max looked at them from the side mirror. A heartbroken expression flittered over his face. A comment from Kyle broke Future Max from his depressed contemplations.

“So there was a sign back there. It said don’t pick up hitchhikers, they could be escaped prisoners. So I figure, we have to kick out Rath and Max.” Kyle laughed. “Seriously, Rath’s mullet is a crime against nature. And Max is a pedophile.”

“What The Fuck?” Future Max whipped around to strangle Kyle.

“Please! We all see how you look at our little Lizzie. Those aren’t pure thoughts. She’s underaged, and you’re ancient.” Kyle laughed hiding behind Ava.

“Liz was my wife! I see her as the girl I feel in love with. I look at her, and I see the woman she would have grown up to be.” Future Max growled, hurt colored his tone as Liz flinched in Zan’s arms.

“That’s it; I’m pulling this car over…” Future Liz pulled the car to the side of the road, and then placed her head in her hand. “I’ve become my father.” A couple of deep breathes later, and she pulled her hand away. “Ok. Let’s get this all out of the way. Max, Liz isn’t your wife. Liz isn’t me. Liz is her own person who has decided to fall in love with someone else. I know you are hurt that she’s fallen in love with Zan, but we can’t help who we fall in love with.

“And Kyle, I love you. You know, at this point, that I will do anything to keep you safe. But for fuck’s sake, stop ragging on Max. He’s been through shit you can’t even imagine. He has lost Isabel and Michael. Michael died in his arms. Show him the respect you show me.” Future Liz turned back to stare out the windshield. “I’m tired, kids. We have a long road ahead of us, and we need to be a unit. Infighting can only get us killed. So suck it up and deal.”

Zan nodded, kissing Liz’s forehead. “I’s agree wit Queenie. We needs to stop seeings us as persons, and start seeings us as peoples.”

Liz laced her fingers through Zan’s as she looked at Future Max. “I’m sorry, Max. I never wanted to hurt you. I don’t want to hurt the Max waiting for us in Roswell, but I can’t lie to myself about how I feel. I can’t pretend that I’m not in love with Zan to make it easier. When Zan leaves, I’m not going pretend that Max can fill Zan’s place. Max was my first love. He’ll always hold a special place in my heart, but I am in love with Zan. I apologize for hurting you, but I refuse to apologize for falling in love with him.” She turned back to Zan’s arms, tears etched in her eyes.

Future Liz pulled back into traffic, the only sound was the breathing and heartbeats of the occupants. Everyone took the time to reflect on the words said, and ones left unspoken.

Chapter 15

The rest of the trip to Roswell was full of introspection. The laughter, and uncomplicated feelings that had permeated the foyer of the Red Roof inn had given way to the uneasy knowledge that there was still a battle ahead.

Future Liz wished she could have taken back her harsh words, but they needed to be said. Future Max needed to stop looking at Liz like she was betraying their wedding vows. Kyle needed to learn that her future wasn’t the only desolate one. Even if Future Max had had twelve more years, it didn’t make the fate of his world any less tragic.

She was surprised by her younger self. Liz had spoken with a passion that Future Liz had vaguely remembered. It hurt for her to think that maybe somewhere along the way, Max and she had lost that passionate love that had infused every word.

Future Max placed a hand on Future Liz’s leg. He was forced to agree with everything she had said to him. Yes, Liz was the girl that he had dated, but she wasn’t the Liz he had married. She was a woman who had been told that any future with Max was doomed. There was also the strength of the connection between Zan and Liz; theirs had never been that strong, even when they had ‘cemented’ their love.

Future Liz looked over at Future Max, startled by his movement. “Yes?”

“I just wanted contact.” Future Max started to move his hand away.

A hand stopped it, Future Liz’s eye still on the road. “I need contact too. It’s just harder for me to ask for it.”

Future Max squeezed her leg in response.

“Max, you need to tell me how far to pull over, and when to stop.” Future Liz’s voice held an edge of fear, as the car started to pull over.

“We’re off the road, you can stop.” Future Max looked over at Future Liz in confusion and fear. The fear only compounded when he saw that her normally brown eyes had been glossed over by the same milky silver substance that had covered them when she had first looked into the Granolith.

The back of the car seems to awaken from their almost dreamlike haze. “What’s happening?” Alex seemed the first to realize that something was wrong.

“Vision.” Future Liz bit out, a trickle of blood started to run from one of her nostrils.

“Good, bad? Are you using the Seal?” Kyle’s voice shook as his arm tightened around Ava’s shoulder.

“Nondescript for right now. I’m not using the Seal, the Seal is using me.” Future Liz’s words seemed stilted, and flat. She blinked rapidly, and grumbled to herself. “I don’t want to involve Kal. He’s an arrogant bastard, and doesn’t want in this fight.”

“Kal?” Zan seemed confused. The name tickled the back of his brain, like a word being stuck on the end of his tongue. It flittered across his synapse, a forgotten memory in a past long dead.

The silver receded as Future Liz held her head. “I don’t like this new development with the visions. They didn’t hurt before.” She wiped the blood away.

“The Seal is hurting you the longer it’s active.” Liz whispered; her eyes filled with worry and a knowledge that shouldn’t have been there.

“I told you that it was killing me slowly. Nothing that kills you slowly is painless. It’s part of the fun of the slow way.” Future Liz shook her head. “Thankfully we are only five miles from Roswell.”

“How are we doing this? I mean it’s not like I can hide everyone at my place.” Kyle pointed. “Also we’re going to need cover stories. I mean, mine is easy. My dad doesn’t expect a lie. Alex can just say he didn’t get in.”

“I’d miss my family too much.” Liz softly murmured. “I’ll explain that I want to be home during the most important two years of my life.”

Zan leaned his forehead against the side of Liz’s head. “I wants to be there too.”

Liz turned her head and kissed Zan softly. “I want you to be there too.”

“Max and I’ll stay with the Granolith. Kyle, do you think you can bunk Zan, Ava, Rath and Lonnie?” Future Liz closed her eyes, breathing deeply.

“Queenie, who’s Kal?” Zan cut off Kyle before he could answer.

“No one.” Future Liz shook her head.

“Dat’s a lie. I might’s agree wit you on orders. But you don’t lie ta me. I is da King. If ya expect me ta commit my peeps den don’t lie. And share da wealth. I needs ta know.” Zan untangled himself from Liz, and sat up straight.

“Kal was one of your protectors. He left you because he didn’t want anything to do with Antar. He likes playing Human. He’s a jackass, and according to my vision we need him.” Future Liz opened her eyes, and glared at Zan. Her eyes were so bloodshot that even what should have been white was tinted a light pink.

“If he’s in da vision we deal. Nows, I don’t knows but da rest of ya all, but dis car is getting too small. Lets go to Roshell and work from dere.” Zan nodded, his arm wrapping around Liz’s waist again.

“Yes, Master.” Future Liz’s voice dripped of sarcasm and anger. She pulled back onto the road and offered up a quick prayer to anyone who’d listen.

Lonnie looked scared, her hand slid into Rath’s. She sighed as Rath squeezed her hand in reassurance. “Dis not what we signed up for,” her voice quiet and broken. The idea that one of the protectors had just thrown them away, left them for dead reminded her that her family was the only thing she could count on. She slide her other hand into Alex’s, and squeezed. Her family might have been bigger then it was before, but they were still the ones she knew she could trust.

Ava bit her lip as Kyle rubbed a hand against her arm. She leaned into it, like a cat getting its head scratched. Her fling with Kyle seemed less fling like by the minute. She didn’t understand why she cared; in all honesty he wasn’t her type. Yet, here she was being comforted by him, and already had slept with him twice. He gave her a safe feeling that been long forgotten.

Alex felt Lonnie slide her hand in his, and squeezed. He could understand Zan’s need to know, and Future Liz’s need for secrecy. He was riding back into a town that held more then just a phony UFO hoax. The weight of the knowledge weighed down upon his brain. “I think we need to let them know as soon as we get into town. The longer we delay, the harder it is going to be to get them to understand why we didn’t tell them.”

“We’ll meet them at the Pod Chamber.” Future Liz turned the car towards their new destination.

“I’ll call them.” Liz pulled her cell phone from her bag.

A few minutes of telling Maria that ‘yes, she survived New York’ and ‘No, she wasn’t staying there and Maria couldn’t live with her,’ Liz was able to tell her to meet her at the Pod Chamber. “Maria, Michael knows the way. He’ll need a ride anyways.”

The next call was the hardest. “Hi Max… Yeah I’m back from New York. I need to see you… and Isabel. We’re meeting everyone at the Pod Chamber. Maria’s picking up Michael… I’m going to have Kyle call Tess. Yes, she needs to be there.” Liz was amazed her tone seemed normal.

Zan rubbed her lower back, sending soothing waves of love. He knew it was hard talking to his clone. She wanted to be nice, but not give Max any hope. It was a thin line that in all reality didn’t exist.

“Max, I have to go. I’ll see you at the Pod Chamber. I’ll talk to you later.” Liz stammered. It hurt to be so abrupt with him, but she knew Max would take it wrong if she hadn’t.

She hung up, and handed to the phone to Kyle.

“Hey Dad! We’re back. Grab Tess and meet us up at the Pod Chamber. We found what we were looking for. I can’t wait for you to meet her…” Kyle realized his Freudian slip. “I mean… Yeah, just meet us there. See you then!”

After a while they pulled up to the Pod Chamber. Everyone filed out, and sat on the rocks, just thankful to be out of the car. Future Liz and Future Max walked into the cave to check on the Granolith.

“I see’s wit me eye, somethin’ that starts wit da letter ‘D’.” Rath called out after a while from the sheer boredom of waiting.

“It’s Dirt, dumbass.” Ava rolled her eyes. “Other den dat we’s got Rock, and Desert. I tink Not’in’ could work too. Cause dere be not’in’ out here.”

“I see thing that begins with ‘A’.” Kyle called out, smirking.

“Rath? Cause Asshole works.” Lonnie laughed.

“Lonnie, I try not to look at Rath. The Mullet is going to eat me in my sleep. I was talking Aliens… at four o’clock.” Kyle pointed to the set of three cars pulling up.

As the Pod Squad, Maria and Jim stepped out of their cars; Zan pulled Liz closer, his arm encircling her waist. He was claiming her for all to see.

Max’s eyes widened and his face fell as the implication was driven home. He could feel his heart break as Liz leaned into Zan’s embrace. This was why she was so curt on the phone, and couldn’t return his declaration of love. This was someone that looked exactly like him. Max clung desperately to the shred of hope that they were shapeshifters.

Lonnie laughed at the massive confusion. These were the other side of the coin… They probably didn’t even know about Kivar, and their deaths. She questioned why she was here again. The idea of needing them to help save this planet seemed laughable at best. With one quick glance proved that Future Liz had been right about Max and the Seal. This young man seemed more worried about where Zan’s hands were on Liz, then why there were two versions of them.

Isabel blinked in confusion, “What’s going on?” Her eyes riveted to the scene before her. Alex, Liz and Kyle were sitting with four people who looked exactly like them. She had always hoped for more of her kind, but seeing her own reflection with hardened eyes was more then she could take. “Who are you?”

Rath wiggled his tongue at Isabel. “See some’em some’em you like? We’s you. Except we’s not.” Rath’s normal defense went up. When in doubt, hit on the girl looking most like Lonnie. It was made even easier since Isabel was Lonnie’s clone. He was out of his element. Rath had never seen so much nature in his life, not even when watching the discovery channel through illegal means.

Alex smacked Rath on the arm. “Stop scaring them. No one sees anything they like when they look at you.” The quick banter between Alex and Rath hurt the Roswellian Aliens to watch. It was the easy friendship that all four craved in some way.

Kyle laughed. “Alex, according to Rath, you seemed to like it enough to fall asleep in bed with him.”

“It was dark and I went to the wrong bed! I don’t want Rath. First thing, he’s a guy. I’m all about the women. Secondly, he’s skuzzy. I’d hope Lonnie has all of her shots before she touches him.” Alex snapped at Kyle with an undertone of humor.

Ava shook her head. “Don’t listen ta Kyle. He’s hoping dat you’s and Rath hook up so he can try to threesome it wit Lon and me. I know’s it ain’t going ta work. He still tries.” Her eyes skidded across Max, as her heart broke for him. He seemed so lost and nothing like Zan. It was painful to watch. Watching the grin flitter across her own double’s face was harsher. Ava couldn’t believe that it was in her to feel happy at the heartbreak of another. Yet, there it was. Tess was almost joyous at the sight of Zan marking Liz.

Tess’ face filled with glee has the idea that she won washed over her. Max was hers. Her eyes scanned the group, and the grin faded from her lips as Kyle kissed the side of Ava’s head. Her heart broke slightly, she wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was the gentleness of the kiss, or the way Kyle wasn’t even looking at her. It wasn’t a way to get to her, just a soft moment between lovers. The memory of Nasedo muttering about a second set flashed through her mind. “They’re the other set.”

Michael’s eyes widened. “There were eight pods.”

“Yes, there were. Now we’re going to use all eight to help save the world.” Future Liz walked out, Future Max’s hand entwined in hers. “Or we’re your future. And believe when I say, in my future, I’m the only one left.”

Twilighteyes ~ I'm honored. THANK YOU!!!! I'm truly honored.

B ~ Your continued support is amazing. I'm honored and I love you!!!! You are the bestest best friend anyone could have. I don't think anyone has more support in me then you.... Including me. LOL. *Huggles*

Rach ~ Thank you!! It doesn't make you a bad person for rooting for Zan. I agree that Alex got screwed in the 'Holy Crap Something is Going On' dept. Don't worry, The Alien Abyss scares me too. But it's the only place it would fit.

Lizandzackfan ~ Thank you for your continued support! ^.^

V ~ I'm just happy you loved it!!!! *Glomp*

K ~ Thank you sweetie!!! *Huggles*

Chapter 16

The Roswell set and Maria were taken aback by the appearance of Future Liz and Future Max. Max’s eyes were glued to Future Liz and Future Max’s clasped hands. His face filled with longing, and bespoke of heartache.

“What is going on?” Michael decided that enough was enough. There were too many things going on, and he felt more like Alice through the looking glass then an alien.

“I’m Liz six years from now. In my future, Kivar has taken over Earth. I’ve come back to stop that.” Future Liz stated her voice flat as if trying to control all emotion.

“I’m Max. I’m from fourteen years in the future.” Future Max squeezed Future Liz’s hand, “I came back to the past to have Liz make my younger self fall out of love with her. In my future, Tess left town. We didn’t realize we needed the four square. We weren’t strong enough without her.” Future Max’s eyes soaked in the sight of the younger Isabel and Michael.

“He created my future. I successfully broke my Max’s heart. The enemy still came.” Future Liz bit out. “We also didn’t have the four square. Also the true king, Zan, had died. Only Zan can truly tap into the power of the Seal and the Granolith. Without that, we were doomed from the beginning.”

“So what does this mean now?” Michael seemed skeptical at best.

“We’ve saved Zan’s life. Now comes the quote unquote fun part of this journey.” Future Liz shook her head sadly. “We have to take out the Skins.”

“What?!” Everyone stood there in shock.

“We must meet them head on, and by destroying them; we take out any chance of Kivar realizing how perfectly suited Earth is for his needs.” Future Liz pulled at Future Max and her joined hands. “It’s time to show you why we need the other protector.”

The group followed Future Liz and Future Max into the cave. Stopping in front of the pods that once held the Roswell set, all but one seemed ripped open.

Max walked to the pod that had once held him. His hand flattened against the newly formed barrier. “What’s going on?”

Everyone stood speechless before Alex looked closer. “It’s a fetus.”

“I’d like you to meet Serena.” Future Liz’s voice was soft and almost motherly.

“Who’s Serena?” Isabel felt almost violated by all the knowledge being thrown at her.

“She’s important. The less you know the better.” Future Liz bit her lip.

“Ok, I’m getting tired of this shit.” Kyle yelled frustrated. “You were all, anything you need to know, I’ll tell you. Now every other thing is not for us to know. You want us to practically lay down our lives for something we aren’t allowed to understand yet. That’s bullshit.”

“At least you were given more. We weren’t even included. I mean, Liz,” Maria turned to Liz and threw her hands in the air, “you lied to me.”

“I asked them not to tell you, Maria. You’ve never been the most… trust worthy when it comes to this stuff.” Future Liz let the anger she held deep inside of her pour out. “I’ve seen you run from the knowledge you asked for. I’ve seen you turn from me. I’ve seen us drift apart because your music was more important then our friendship. Alex died and you left me there. I thought he was murdered, and I was right.” Future Liz glared at Maria. “You followed your boyfriend like a dutiful girlfriend. I gathered the people I knew I could count on when the chips were down.”

“It’s our future now, but because you’ve seen things in yours, we aren’t worthy of knowing anything?” Michael could feel the anger grow in him.

Maria fell back, her eyes held the broken heartache of Alex’s death. “How does Alex die?”

Alex made his way towards Tess. His gaze captured hers as he stood in front of her. Alex’s eyes searching, glaring into Tess.

“What are you doing, Alex?” Isabel’s voice broke into the intense scrutiny.

“I’m seeing if I can see the darkness and evil that lay behind these eyes. I want to see if I can spot a glimmer of the wickedness that she’s capable of.” Alex shook his head. “I see a confused girl instead.” He looked back to Future Liz. “Why can’t I see the horrible person that kills me? Why can I only see a lonely girl who is desperate for love?”

Tess gasped in denial.

“Because Alex, Destiny to Tess is like a Fairy Tale for us. Fairy Tales are lies we tell our children so that don’t hate us for bringing them into the world.” Future Liz’s voice was cold and calm.

“Tess kills Alex?” Max whipped around, breaking from his pondering of the meaning of the fetus.

“She mindwarps me until my brain was mush.” Alex’s eyes still bore into Tess’. “She used me to translate that damn ‘Book of Destiny’.”

The hatred in Max’s eyes burned into Tess’ soul. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. She didn’t want Alex to die. He had been one of the few that had given her a chance. Even Kyle was looking at her in disgust. Tears welled in her eyes, as she willed them away. She refused to allow anyone to see weakness. “Mindwarps don’t do that.”

“They do if you use them over and over again. If you focused on one part of the brain of deleting the memories and replacing them with fake ones. No one’s brain can handle that kind of stress.” Future Liz’s voice was matter of fact, with a hint of a waiver.

“But that’s not me! I’m not that woman you talk of. I haven’t even…” Tess could feel the walls she had built to protect her start to crumble. “I’m not her.”

“And I’m going to do everything in my power so that you don’t become her.” Future Liz let go Future Max’s hand as she walked over to Tess. Her hand cupping Tess’ chin, “Because if you even think of walking that road, I maybe a distant memory of the Granolith. But I will come back from the nothingness I will be regaled to, to haunt your every thought. Because, little girl, I am what nightmares are made of.”

Max reached for Future Liz, only to be stopped by Zan.

“She need ta exorcize da ghosts. Let Micro do it.” Zan motioned to Alex, who placed a hand on Future Liz’s shoulder.

“Liz, you talked about how Nasedo had created the perfect weapon. How you couldn’t understand how someone who shared the same genetic material of Ava could be so evil. She isn’t evil; she’s just very lost right now. We’ve just torn her Fairy Tale to shreds… Leave her be.” Alex let go of Future Liz’s shoulder, and took Tess’ hand. His voice broke into Future Liz’s thoughts, as she let go of Tess’ chin.

“Tess, this is your chance. We make our own fate. Don’t allow your upbringing force you to do things you can’t see yourself doing.” Alex squeezed Tess’ hand, giving absolution to deeds not done.

Liz could hear a whisper tickle the edge of her brain, as she stood next to both Max and Zan. She noticed both men were watching the scene unfold in front of them. She slipped into the Granolith Chamber, following the hum that skidded across her senses.

She stared with little awe. Liz knew deep inside that she should have had more trepidation or admiration for it. Yet, it felt more like home. The sight of the Granolith held little emotion except a vague sensation of origin.

Rath and Lonnie had followed Liz into the Granolith Chamber. Rath noticed Zan and Max enthralled by Alex’s forgiveness for crimes Tess had yet to do. For Zan, it was the same absolution he had given Lonnie and Rath. For Max, it reaffirmed everything he loved about humanity.

Lonnie watched her Queen as she slipped away. Fear for Liz’s life and a seed of knowledge buried deep in her genetic code demanded her to watch what was about to happen.

Rath could feel the same pull as Lonnie did toward the young Queen. His feelings of unease towards the filled pod drove him further towards Liz.

Liz reached towards the Granolith, the colors twisting across its opaque skin.

“Don’t!” Rath reached for Liz, as her fingertips grazed the surface.

Liz’s skin glowed as if being lit from the inside.

Rath grabbed at Lonnie. “Get’s Da Man!” He pushed her out of the room, his gaze drawn back to the scene in front of him.

Liz could hear Rath yell at Lonnie, as she could hear everyone’s thoughts. Lonnie’s fear for Liz tasted like oranges. Alex’s forgiveness of Tess smelled of lilacs. Both Max and Future Max’s pain for Future Liz skimmed across Liz’s senses like oil.

Kyle and Ava’s joy of finding each other tasted like crimson. Jim’s emotions scattered across her in a whirlwind of happiness, hurt, pain and love. Rath’s anger of the situation, his inability to protect his family, sucked at her fingertips like mud.

The smell of azure skidded over her brain of Tess’ confusion and abandonment. Isabel and Maria’s pain and loss tasted of ash. Michael’s need for answers burst across Liz’s tongue like ripe blueberries.

Zan’s love wrapped around her; tasted of devotion and smelled of home.

Then a voice drowned out all things, begging for knowledge. Liz watched her memories like a film play across her eyelids. The movie stopped as holographic image of the Queen of Antar spoke of Destiny, and the parts everyone played.

As the film started to rewind, Liz fell back. Zan pulled Liz into his arms. “Please… Tell’s me dat it not goin’ ta kill her like its doin’ ta ya.” Zan begged Future Liz.

“What’s killing me is the Seal. I don’t know what the Granolith has done to her. It doesn’t talk to me. I dragged answers from it. It’s almost like it’s communicating with her.” Future Liz looked as shaken as Zan.

Max’s fingers itched to comfort her, as Future Max pulled Future Liz into his arms.

“And the Undead Queen will be called, her King untouched by the Oncoming Death. Oh Hail the Priestess, the seed of the Un-Queen. Oh Hark, the redemption of Antar as four meets four. Watch as the World of Green births anew.” Ava’s voice was soft, but strong. “I remember that vaguely. It’s almost like a dream, but I think it was a memory of before.”

“How does that help us?” Michael looked around feeling useless.

“Undead Queen? Could they be talking about Max saving Liz?” Isabel questioned, as she mouthed the rest of the prophesy.

“Oncoming Death would be the fact that we’ve stopped Zan’s death.” Alex piped in, “four meets four must mean the two sets of Royal Four.”

“That’s great, but what does this mean for the mission?” Michael looked at Rath, who shrugged. Michael had hoped his clone had more memories of who they were before.

“I’s da muscle, Duke.” Rath put an arm around Lonnie’s shoulders. “Zan do da brain squeeze. Lon and Aves sits looking sexy, and I bust da skulls.”

“Let’s find out what Liz has to say first.” Max knelt down on other side of Liz. “She might have more answers.”

Zan kissed Liz’s forehead, as he held her close. “Come’s on, Sleeping Beauty. We’s like answers. I needs ta see dose big browns.”

A moan tore from Liz’s throat as she pried open her eyes. Her voice sounded of old paper, as she whispered. “Kal is coming. We need to prepare.”

Death Is A Playground (UC/CC, Adult) Ch 17 ~ 9/18

Post by darkmoon »

So I almost didn't post today. Not because I didn't want to post. I was in the hospital until about half hour ago. I had a horrible reaction to a medication, and had to be taken by ambulance. They kept me overnight. When I say horrible reaction... I mean there was a chance that Burningchaos would post this as the last chapter of the fic. But I'm ok now. And I hope you enjoy this chapter!!!!

P.S. There is a part where it's mentioned that someone would play Death. It's because old wives tales say that when faced against Death for your soul, you can play a game against Death to win your life back.

Rach ~ 3 hours? You amaze me. Alex can't hold grudges, especially against someone who hasn't done it yet. Maria is also one my least favorite characters. I don't think Liz would have let Zan go... I know I won't. LOL. Thank you for reading!!!

Kate ~ Thank you very much!!

Behrstars ~ Thank you very much!!

V ~ You are made of Awesome and Thank you!!!!!!! *Snuggles*

Begonia ~ Thank you very much! Personally I never liked Maria's reactions, especially since she would demand answers and then freak or get pissed at the answers. But that's just how I am.

K ~ ^.^ I love your fb!!!! It's awesome!!!! I'm so thankful you love this fic. I will still love when you called me and was like WTF?!?!?! SERENA?!!?!?!?! I agree with your attitude on Maria. Completely. I told you that I had a line that had been sitting with me since Ch 2. The Fairy Tale line was it. Thank you again!!! *Snuggles*

Chapter 17

“What do you mean Kal is coming?” Max asked his hand curling into a fist to keep from reaching for Liz.

Zan helped Liz sit up, as she coughed. “The other protector, he’s on his way. He is needed to protect Serena. I don’t know what or who she is. Future me was right; she’s very important. Don’t know for what though.”

“Whatcha ya see der?” Rath piped in.

“A lot… Emotions, the history of your people and a voice asking me questions.” Liz shook her head, as if to clear it. “The Granolith has accepted me as the Queen of your people,” her voice uncertain, and worried.

“Plez, we’s done dat in da Big Apple.” Lonnie waved away the worry.

“If she’s the Queen, who’s the King?” Michael’s eyes shifted from Max to Zan and back again.

“I’s da King. I has da Seal. Don’ts ya forgets dat, Mickey.” Zan hovered protectively over Liz.

“What does this mean for the mission?” Future Liz stared at the Granolith, her fingers itched to touch it. The knowledge of what was to come taunted her.

“Zan needs to connect to the Granolith. He needs to take his place as King. The Granolith will accept him.” Liz sighed. The whole thing was so much to take in. She hadn’t even been home yet, and here she was being crowned Queen by a device that had been a religious relic on an alien world.

“Angel, I’s be right back.” Zan kissed Liz’s forehead before he stood. His hand reached for the Granolith.

A hand on his wrist stopped him. “Don’t do this.” Future Max’s voice was strong, and worried. He had positioned himself so that Zan and Liz separated him and his younger self. “I’ve seen what this does to Liz. This practically killed my Liz. It knocked out yours. What if it kills you because you have the Seal? We can’t do this without you.”

“My Queen requested that I speak with the Granolith. I will do so.” Zan’s New York accent slipped away as he spoke as the King he had been.

“Just don’t die.” Future Max let go of Zan’s wrist.

“You’s and da crew booked it ta Da Apple ta save me. I’s not going ta throw dat away. I love her. I’s cans beat Death. I tells Rath dat Death can’ts play B-ball.” Zan smirked, as he placed his hand against the cone.

Instantly his skin glowed, as Liz’s had.

Rath clenched his fists, as Lonnie laid a hand on his shoulder. “She don’t steer him wrong. We’s gots ta trust dat they knowing what deys doing.” Her voice was hushed, and soothing.

Zan stood in on a cliff, his eyes soaking in the blood red water below and the three moons that hung in the sky above. “I’s on Antar.”

“You are on the Antar that was.” A voice spoke with a soft motherly whispered tone. “Oh Hark, the redemption of Antar as four meets four.”

Zan watched as Rath and Lonnie appeared to his right, Lonnie’s hand gripping Rath’s shoulder. Both seemed to be staring intensely at something. Zan could make out a glimmer of fear skirting across Rath’s face. Lonnie seemed almost at peace.

Michael emerged to his left, his arms crossed. His eyes held a blank slate of non-emotion. His body told a story of unease, and worry.

Isabel materialized, her face filled with fear, and heartbreak. She seemed lost and lonely as she stood at the very edge of the cliff.

Ava in Kyle’s arms, and Tess still holding Alex’s hand flickered into existence. Kyle and Alex both looked faded, like an old movie being projected on a bed sheet. Ava and Tess were in Technicolor. Ava looked content, as if this were the only place in the world, while Tess looked like Alex’s hand was the only thing keeping her from crawling out of her skin.

A sound came from behind him. As Zan turned, he could see Max. His clone staring down at nothingness, his face filled with a pain and longing that made Zan ache.

Zan realized he was watching the two groups of Royal Four as they were in the Granolith Chamber.

A young girl, no more then five, tugged at Zan’s hand. Her brown eyes held an ancient knowledge. “Watch as the World of Green births anew.” Her voice soft, as her other hand twirled her chocolate brown hair around a finger.

Alex and Kyle burst in to color, like Dorothy arriving in Oz.

Jim stood farthest away, his face holding a worried contentment as he watched over the group.

Maria appeared next to Michael, her eyes wide with fear. Her hands wrung in worry.

Finally Liz exploded into existence. A crown of gold and black jewels lay upon her head, as she sat regally. Instead of her clothes, she was clad in flowing robes that color matched that of the sea below.

Zan reached up to his head, as he felt a crown as well. He looked down to see an open robe, his chest bare. A pair of blood red pants hung low on his hips, as his feet were bare. The outfit struck a cord deep in his chest. It felt right, like he had always worn those clothes.

“These are clothes of a King, my liege.” The little girl whispered, hiding in her hair. Her actions seemed almost playfully shy.

“You’s da Granolith?” Zan looked over at her, confused.

“No, my liege. I’m Serena.” The little girl looked over at Liz. “Your queen worries for you. Tell her… Tell her you are ok.”

“You’s familiar. Why?” Zan could feel déjà vu as Serena pushed her hair behind her ears to look up at him.

“Your heart knows what your mind can’t grasp yet.” Her voice filled with a quiet sadness. “My existence isn’t for you to know. Come back when the Skins have met their fate and befallen to dust. Then… Truly then, you will be ready.”

Zan walked over to Liz. Kneeling before her, he cupped her cheeks. “I is good.”

Liz blinked a few times, and then looked at Zan. “Where are we?”

“Antar. Welcome’s ta you’s kingdom.” Zan smiled. “You’s look smoking in da Royal colors. Marks you as mine.”

“Are we in the Granolith? How?”

“I’s don’t know. Serena tolds me to let you knows I’m good.” Zan shrugged.

“Wait… Red is your Royal color?” Liz blinked.

“Yeah…” Zan looked her up and down, drinking in the sight of his wife wearing the crown; his Queen wearing his colors.

“Zan, let’s go back. There is a lot to do. And the knowledge you seek isn’t here in me.” Liz kissed Zan softly.

Zan nodded, as he kissed her head, and stepped away. He turned to find Serena watching them. “Tells me what’s I needs ta know. I’s got a Queen dat needs me.”

Serena blushed, as Zan got the feeling of déjà vu. “Bend down.” She motioned for him to kneel in front of her.

Zan knelt down, and looked at Serena. “What’s now?”

Serena placed her hands on either side of his head, and closed her eyes. “Your knowledge.”

Zan could feel his head split open as information poured in. He pulled back, and found himself back in the Granolith Chamber.

“What’s happ’n?” Rath’s eyes wide in worry, as Lonnie pulled Rath into her embrace.

Ava bit her lip before hiding her head in Kyle’s chest.

“The knowledge…” Zan could feel wetness against his top lip.

Liz staggered to him, wiping the blood away. “You had a nose bleed. Did you see what you needed to?” her voice thick with worry and weary.

Zan pulled her into his arms. “I understand so much now. You were right, my Queen.” He kissed her softly. “And you looked gorgeous in my colors.”

“That was real?” Liz’s eyes widened slightly, and slightly blushed.

“And more.” Zan nodded before looking to the group. “I now know how to defeat the Skins.” His eyes held a sadness as he looked at Future Liz. “And I know what you did not want us to know. I also know why.”

Chapter 18

“What are you going to do about it?” Future Liz looked at Zan, her eyes pleading for his understanding.

“The choices you make affect us as a group. I also acknowledge that revealing those choices will have dire consequences. I choose to keep your secret.” Zan bowed his head in acknowledgment.

“Whaz wit da new lingo, Duke?” Rath cocked his head, confusion settled across his shoulders like a blanket.

“I am as the Granolith crowned me, Rath.” Zan motioned to the Granolith’s multi-colored surface.

“You said that place in the Granolith was our kingdom. Was that Antar?” Liz stared at the cone with awe.

“Antar that was, the untainted planet, that is our kingdom.” Zan sagged slightly against Liz’s arms. “I wish to retire, my Queen. The connection was more then I expected.”

Jim stepped forward, grateful to finally be of use. “Ok, people, lets pack it up.” Jim motioned for everyone to leave. “This is a very small area, and it’s getting smaller as we speak.”

He'd felt helpless and out of his element, something not uncommon since learning Max's origins but this situation had him feeling that to a degree he'd never expected

Liz smiled in thanks to Jim, as she held on to Zan. Worry and fear flittered across her face, as Zan leaned more heavily on her.

Rath pushed Max and the others towards the doorway, as he grabbed Zan’s arm. “Lean’s on me, Duke. Lizzie don’ts got da muscle ta gets ya outta here.”

Zan leaned against his first, taking in the scared look of his wife. “Liz, it will be fine. I am only fatigued from the transference of knowledge.” An odd look of confusion marred Liz’s face at Zan’s continued usage of language. “And I am still the man you married yesterday. The Granolith has seen to my language, but nothing can change my feelings for you.” His hand stroked her cheek, as his eyes spoke of love that ran to his soul.

“Am I so transparent?” Liz bit her lip; her head leaned against his hand.

“Only to me, my love. We are as one.” Zan smiled his voice strong and confident.

“I need to get home, but I want to make sure you are comfortable at Valenti’s before I go.” Liz blushed, hoping the subject change would keep her from pouring out her fears and her love for the man before her.

“All will be well, my Queen.” Zan smiled tiredly.

“Let’s be all’s well at da car. You’s ass is heavy. Damn and I’s thought Lon da only wide ass in da fam… It’s gene-likes.” Rath complained, hoping to stop the sappiness and get them moving.

With a glare from his King and Queen, they started out of the cave that held both the Granolith and Serena.

Everyone took their time, looking back the area that changed all their lives.

“I don’t think my house is going to hold this many people.” Jim pointed out. “I mean Ava, Lonnie and Tess can shack up in Kyle’s old room. But I don’t know where we’d be able to house Zan and Rath… Let alone Future Liz and Future Max.”

“We’ll stay out here. I’d rather be by Serena. I would rather she not be left alone, plus someone needs to stay here incase something happens.” Future Liz put that worry to rest.

“I require a motel room.” Zan lifted his head; his demeanor seemed wearier the longer he stood.

“I still have money from when Future Me changed the singles in New York.” Liz pointed out.

“We can do that?” Michael blinked, shocked.

“I can.” Future Liz decided not to let the group know what they could do if they put their minds to it. It was bad enough having Kyle with several hundreds at his disposal.

“I’ll be a nice guy and throw in some money for Rath to get his own room. Seriously… I don’t want to have an Alex moment.” Kyle laughed as his arms squeezed Ava, who laughed.

“Alex moment?” Isabel and Tess said almost simultaneously: although Isabel raised an eyebrow whereas Tess merely frowned.

“I swear I didn’t know which bed I fell asleep in. Next thing I know, I’m being groped by Captain Caveman.” Alex bemoaned to Tess, who seemed more at ease the longer Alex spoke.

“Rath groped you, in your sleep.” Tess concluded, as she tried to hide a smile of amusement.

“I woke up…”

“Screech’ng like a chickie on da rag. He’s gots some womanly like lungs on dat bitch.” Rath nodded.

“And you kept on groping.” Alex grounded his teeth. “I will kill you with my brain, after we have defeated the Skins.”

“You’s keep talking, but’s all I’s hear is Bitch, Bitch, Bitch.” Rath lifted a hand to make a mouth talking motion.

“I hate you.” Alex growled, while the others laughed. “Yes, mock my pain…”

“Alex… It would sound better if you hadn’t just quoted the Princess Bride.” Maria let herself slip into the easy banter that had been ripped away like curtain Toto had yanked away when revealing the True Wizard. Future Liz’s blunt honesty and horrific view of the future had shaken Maria to the core of her being. It was like she didn’t even know herself. The concept that Liz, any Liz, wouldn’t believe Maria worthy of information was decimating to not only her self esteem, but her beliefs in their friendship.

Isabel could feel her psyche break apart slightly. The other versions of them had created friendship with the Roswellian humans, with the exception of Maria. The friendships had been formed tighter then ones she knew she was capable of. She also watched as Tess, who had been revealed as Alex’s killer of the future, had been forgiven by her victim himself.

The knowledge that her brother was breaking down, worse then before, at the sight of his clone and the one he loved weighted upon her shoulders. Seeing the man he would have been strained the already broken feeling she had about the whole situation.

Michael placed a hand on Isabel’s shoulder, his face a blank canvas devoid of thought. “We’ll get through this together.” The sentence was soft spoken but held a glimmer of steel. A look of heartache swam across Michael’s eyes as he glanced in Maria’s direction.

Maria held her arms around herself, as she walked to Max. “Girlfriend… Are you ok?” The tone held a mother-hen, take no prisoners quality.

Max’s eyes shimmered with tears as he watched Liz help Zan into the suburban. “She really does love him… Doesn’t she?”

“It doesn’t mean she didn’t love you any less.” Maria held her arms open to cradle her broken friend.

“It wasn’t meant to be. I mean, we got together in both universes… and then fell apart.” Max’s voice was small as he willed himself not to cry in Maria’s arms.

“Max…” Maria was at a loss for words, for the first time there was no glimmer of reconciliation.

“Can I talk to Max, Maria?” Future Liz looked over at Maria.

Her voice caught both Max and Maria by surprise, neither realizing that she had walked up.

“Maria… I’d like to talk to her.” Max moved out of Maria calming embrace and stood straighter as he faced the woman he loved.

“I just want to talk to the man who was my husband, Maria. If you had a chance to do so with Michael… Would you?” Future Liz’s voice held hurt, but stayed strong.

“So I married Michael?” Maria trying not to let hope color her words.

“No… You both were too pig-headed… too strong willed to stay together for too long. You were broke up as often as you were together, an endless cycle of happiness and heartache.” Future Liz found that it was not the time to pull punches.

“Maria, this is one of those conversations done best between Liz and myself.” Max winced.

“I’ll be over there, you know… with the other pigheaded one, and the ice princess.” Maria sighed and shook her head.

“I hate hurting her…”

“Then stop, Liz. It’s not hard. She’s your best friend, and all you can do is rip into her every chance you get.” Max threw his hands in the air.

“Poor, young Max. That girl, she hasn’t been my best friend for a long time. She’s been yours. The girl with the pink hair, Ava, she’s my best friend. Kyle is my best friend. Alex was my best friend.”

I love you, Max. I’ll never stop, but that girl there… She isn’t me. She is the one who left you to find your destiny, whose heart broke as you uttered ‘It’s just the four of us now.’ You said that you, the aliens, had to stick together. In that moment I realized… You might love me, but when push came to shove, your heritage beat out that. It always has. So I left you. I gave you what I thought you wanted, I gave you your way out.” Future Liz bit her lip and looked away.

“What happened in my world won’t affect you. I refuse to rub salt into wounds still fresh by explaining what transpired later. I will let you know that I’m sorry you hurt. I ache that you do. I love you, and I always will.” Future Liz leaned up and kissed Max’s cheek.

“Be happy that she is. Find joy that even if it isn’t you, she is loved.” Future Liz wiped a tear away, and walked towards the suburban.

Max watched as Future Liz walked away. His heart was broken, but it hurt less then knowing that the tear she had wiped away wasn’t for the future they wouldn’t have. It was for all the pain he was going through, and he couldn’t help but love her more.

Death Is A Playground (UC/CC, Adult) Ch 19 ~ 10/02

Post by darkmoon »

Carrie ~ You are my hopeless romantic. Rath and Alex are my favorite pair to write dialog for... cause you know if they're talking... it's going to get funny. I love that you are so giddy about the next chapter. And you always make me want to snuggle your feedback. I just love knowing that I can evoke those emotions out of you.

B ~ You know it's my goal to make everyone question their normal take on the characters. I want the Tess haters to feel bad for her. I want the Max haters to feel bad for him. I want the Dupe haters to feel bad for them. I like making people question the average. I want people to kind of tilt their heads a little and say... Yeah... Not what I expected. ^.^ And knowing I can do that to you... Woah. You will never know how much that blows me away.

V ~ You know how I love my Rath and Alex. They make life so much more amusing!! I hope you reread the entire fic and find it as good as the first time.

Begonia9508 ~ I always saw Maria turning to Max. I mean she didn't even realize Liz was getting sick in Chchchanges. That isn't a best friend. So the fact that she became more Max's friend then Liz to me isn't a far fetched idea.

Twilighteyes ~ I'm so glad that Thursdays is a favorite for you now. I agree, with your feeling about Maria and Max. I have this feeling that if Maria would have had her way... she would have switched boyfriend with Liz in a heartbeat. Thank you for your kind of words!! I'm just giddy that you are enjoying it so much!!

Rach ~ Thank you!!!! As you've noticed in DoZ I don't have much love for Maria either. Lol. FLiz remembers all the crap that Maria did... and she knows that history can't repeat it's self. Thank you so much for reading this fic.

K ~ I explained to you the need for this change. *Snuggles* You'll always have DoZ. Zan isn't Ava... He isn't going to end up in Ohio and lose his accent. LOL! I agree with your thoughts on Tess. Alex is the kind of person who would be the one to extend the hand of friendship to Tess. He's the only one who can bridge that gap. I hope I still can wow you with every chapter to come!!

Saavik ~ How was Vegas?! Yeppers! Another fantastic Thursday!!!

Chapter 19

Future Max stood watch by the Yukon’s passenger door. His expression schooled to show no emotion as he watched Liz hover around Zan.

Future Liz looked at her group, as she walked up. Her mask of indifference cracked slightly, showing heartbreak in her eyes. “Max, I need you to drop off the kids to the motel, Kyle’s, and Liz’s.”

“What about Alex?” Kyle piped up looking for said person.

Alex walked up, his arm around Tess. “I’m going to ride back with the Sheriff and Tess.” His voice firm, and unwavering, “Tess and I want to talk.”

“I need to talk to Jim alone. You’ll have to grab another ride home.” Future Liz motioned to the Roswell group.

“It’s creepy how we’ve kind of split into groups.” Kyle pointed out. “It’s almost like the only thing keeping us together was the secret. Now that secret is bigger than the original group, we’ve split.”

Tess knew Kyle was right. It was sad to see the group that had seemed so tightly knit, broken. It reminded her that she was still an outsider. She’d always be an outsider in every group she came into. She looked at her feet as she steeled herself to ask the question that whispered across her brain. “Do you hate me, Kyle?”

“For what?” Kyle was taken aback.

“Alex’s death, the one that isn’t going to happen. I refuse to hurt anyone else.” Tess looked up at Future Liz. “I know I’ve done some horrible things. I refuse to blame Nasedo for it all, but I will do everything in my power to help fix this.”

“And that’s why I can’t hate you. I wanted to, I won’t lie, Tess. I didn’t believe Future Liz at first. I explained to her that I knew you. I knew that you couldn’t do something like that. But you’ve seen her eyes.” Kyle looked over at Future Liz who stood silent. “I knew that she wasn’t lying. Buddha says life is pain; it’s overcoming it that brings us closer to nirvana. I think you can overcome it, Tess.” Kyle let go of Ava for a moment, and pulled Tess into a hug. “Just stop stealing my t-shirts.”

Tess gave a watery laughed, as she hugged him back. “Thank you.”

Kyle pulled back and walked back to Ava, taking her hand in his. “So now that we’ve gotten our Afternoon Special out of the way, what’s the game plan again?”

“I talk to your dad. You all go home. Max comes back here. We get a good night sleep. We regroup after school here. We plan. We grow stronger. We kill the skins. We win.” Future Liz stated in a nonsense tone.

“Queenie, I’s be strong alreadyz.” Rath cracked his neck as he loosened his shoulders.

“Rath…” Future Liz shook her head with an amused smile flittering across her face. “You…”

“I’s what?” Rath demanded, slightly confused by Future Liz’s amusement.

“I meant we grow stronger as a group. You automatically jump to the conclusion that I’m insulting your masculinity. I’m not saying you have a tiny dick… Lonnie says that enough for all of us. I meant we train, and learn how to use our powers in a battle scenario.” Future Liz smiled.

“I’s ‘member why I’s don’ts like ya.” Rath sneered, as the group laughed. Even Future Max shook his head, smiling at Future Liz’s comment towards Rath’s ego.

Lonnie snorted, “Rath, you’s like South Park. We’s know it be wrong ta laugh, but ya makes it so easy like.”

“As much as I dislike placing a damper on this mood, I must urge us to retire.” Zan called from the car. “Tess, the accommodations maybe by slightly cramped, but you are welcome to join us.”

Liz looked over, knowing Tess was uncomfortable in her presence. “Tess, I know we’ve never gotten along. But that’s because we both wanted Max. Things are different now.” Her eyes unconsciously darted to Zan, before once again meeting Tess’ eyes. “I hope we can try again.” She bit her lip, hoping her olive branch wouldn’t be thrown in her face.

“Liz, as much as I’m thankful that you are willing to let bygones be bygones, I think that if we want to bridge this gap that’s seems to be with the two camps… Alex and I should ride in either the Jetta, or the jeep.” Tess pointed out, her eyes pleading for Liz to understand that she was thankful for the second chance.

“Actually, I agree with Tess.” Future Liz nodded. “If we’re going to bring the second four squared into this fight, we’re going to have to bond the groups together.”

“Do we really needs them?” Ava questioned, she wasn’t impressed by the Roswell set.

“Yes.” Zan and Future Liz spoke at the same time.

“It was just a question.” Ava shrugged, staring out at the other set, mentally picking them apart. It confused her how Tess could be so much like her in some ways, yet completely different in others. She could see shades of Rath and Lonnie in Michael and Isabel. Max just seemed like a weaker, less focused Zan. It unnerved her to see the set that was made more human being less human then the more Antarian counterparts.

Future Liz waved off the group. “I really want to speak to Jim alone. And the longer you people are here, the harder it will be to do so.”

After a few questions, sarcastic comments, and bickering on who got ‘stuck’ with Alex and Tess; the groups left in a cloud of dust.

“Ok, Liz. You’ve asked me out here. What is it?” Jim crossed his arms. He finally felt in his element, interrogating a subject.

“I need your help. I know you’ll understand better then the rest can. Zan knows, but the others… they won’t understand.” Future Liz looked out into the desert.

“What is your secret, Liz? Who is Serena? And what is going on?” Jim let his arms loosen and hang helplessly at his sides.

“To succeed in our endeavor against the Skins, I will perish. I don’t mean I’ll disappear into nothingness, or just fade away. I will die. It will hurt, and to be honest, I’m scared. Jim, I will be the only one strong enough to go against Khivar’s general, Nicholas. We will meet in battle, and both of us will die. The group… They can’t know that and work as hard as they must to win.” Future Liz looked down. “Serena… she’s special. I can’t go into anymore then that. It’s not time.”

“Liz, you don’t give me much to go on.” Jim sighed, his feeling unsure towards this woman who could have been.

“Jim, I need help. We’ll need weapons.” Liz sighed. “I was a mother once,” her voice soft, and broken. “I understand what one is willing to do to protect your child. I know you feel the same for Kyle. If you don’t do this for the future, Jim, then do this for Kyle’s future.” Her hand pulled a faded picture from her back pocket.

Jim took it, and looked down. Kyle looked up at him with a smile filled with pure joy. He was clad in white monk robes, his arm around a woman who appeared to be Ava. Her pink and black hair pulled into twin buns on top of her head. A white ankle length dress and a bouquet of pink tea roses gave away that it was Kyle and Ava’s wedding photo.

A smiling suit clad Max held a beaming Liz in his arms. In Liz’s arms, a young boy who seemed around three or four clung to her tan dress like she was the only person in the world. It was easy to see the child’s relation to Max, since other then the bright blue eyes, he looked exactly like him. The blue eyes were a shock to Jim. “Who was the boy’s mother?”

I was his mother. Tess was just the womb who birthed him.” Liz explained through gritted teeth. “That is my baby. That’s my Zanny.” Her eyes teared up as her fingers brushed across the picture containing the boy.

Michael and Maria appeared to be in the middle of one of their off times, since a scruffy Michael in khakis and polo stood on one side of the happily married couple, with Maria in her floral pattern dress on the other. Both seemed happy and joyful at the event, though their eyes conveyed heartache.

The picture was well worn and creased in places.

“It’s the only happy memory I can touch. It’s my touch stone to remind me of what I’m fighting for.” Future Liz bit her lip as she pulled the photo back.

“But you aren’t fighting for that picture. You’ve changed the future so much that there is no way that event will happen.” Jim reminded her.

Future Liz looked away, a faraway conflicted look battled in her eyes. “My final secret to you is why I fight.”

Jim nodded, his stance remained un-judgmental. His mind pondering what could haunt her as much as this did.

“Zanny is in the Granolith.” Future Liz’s voice was soft, as her eyes closed to her grief. “Ava killed Zanny and herself before I left. I killed Kyle to protect everyone from being tortured by the guards. I left no one behind.”

“Then how is Zanny in the Granolith?” Jim’s voice broke, as the knowledge washed over him. He was at a loss. At the moment he mourned the death of Liz’s son, he reeled at the grief of his own.

“I connected to the Granolith to come to the past. As I did, my grief and loss permeated the Granolith, and the connection. To heal me, only slightly, it held onto the soul, so to speak, of Zanny. Every time I connect to the Granolith, I feel him. It’s like being able to hold my baby again. It’s like he never died. And I fight for that. Because when I am erased from this existence, he will fade as well. But as long as I fight, he’s alive. That’s enough for me.”

“Oh, Liz.” Jim shook his head, as he pulled her into his arms. It was moment only a parent could understand. Future Liz was both an exponent his worst fear, the death of his only child, and the catalyst to his only dream, a wonderful life for his son.
