Summary: Liz Parker moves from her home in California to Roswell, NM. Sparks fly when she meets the Pod Squad and they learn that not everything is meets the eye….
AN: I started this fic almost two years ago. I’ve been posting on another forum for sometime and thought that perhaps I’d start a thread here too. It starts out a little rough, but I like to think it progressively gets better… Feedback is always a plus, so feel free to let me know what you think! Enjoy! :)

Part 1

"And this is the quad where we all eat lunch." Maria DeLuca led Liz Parker, the new girl at West Roswell High, to her lunch table. Liz gratefully sat down, already exhausted from her tour.

"Thanks a lot for showing me around." Liz smiled gratefully at Maria. Maria had befriended Liz immediately and had offered to show her around the very intimidating school.

"No prob chica, but now I'm gonna introduce you to the rest of the crew." She nodded to a spiky haired boy walking towards them. Liz saw the look he gave her blonde friend, and before Maria could even say anything, she knew he was Maria's boyfriend.

"That's Michael Guerin, my boyfriend." Maria turned to Michael, who was now sitting beside her. "Michael, this is Liz. She moved here from Cali."

"Hey." Liz smiled.

"Hi."

"OK, here comes Izzy, that is Isabel Evans and my bestest, Alex Whitman. They're a couple and two of the sweetest people in the world. Izzy comes off as an Ice Queen sometimes, but once you get to know her, she thaws." Liz watched as Isabel and Alex intertwined their fingers and sat down beside Michael. "Guys, this is Liz." Maria introduced.

"Hey Liz." They said in unison. Liz didn't answer. Her eyes were focused on the god who'd just entered the quad.

"Maria, who's that?" Liz whispered to her new friend, suddenly wishing she'd word something a little spicier instead of her khaki pants and red tee.

"That's Max Evans. Izzy's bro and West R's b-ball captain. But he's hands off. The gerbil attached to him is Tess Harding. Head Cheerleader, Max's girlfriend, and certified bitch. If you touch Max, she'll make your life a living hell." Despite Maria's warning, Liz's eyes stayed focused on Max. There was something about him...

* * *

Max noticed the new girl as soon as he had entered the quad. His eyes were drawn to her like moth to light. Her deep pools of brown melted into his amber eyes. She was stunning.

"Maxie?" Tess Harding, his latch-on girlfriend, questioned noticing his distraction. His eyes broke away from the lovely brunette sitting at his lunch table and met Tess' cold blue ones.

"What?"

"She's not that pretty." Tess replied, turning toward the table, glaring at the new girl.

* * *

"Way to go Liz, Tess is so onto you!" Maria whispered with a smile. Liz giggled.
"Oh darn. Check later and we'll see if I care."

"Chica, you're bad!"

"You think that's bad, Tessie isn't gonna know what hit her." Liz replied just before Tess and Max sat down. Liz couldn't help but notice that Max Evan's eyes never left her figure.

"Max, Tess… this is Liz. She just moved here." Maria introduced Liz for the fiftieth time. Tess answered with a sneer, but Max smiled.

"Nice to meet you, Liz." He almost whispered. The way he said her name sent shivers down her spine. Silence followed.

"So when did you move here to Roswell?" Alex Whitman asked, trying to break the uneasy quiet.

"Um, we arrived two nights ago. Sunday I helped my parents move into the Crashdown and…" Liz was interrupted by Maria.

"Your parents bought the Crashdown Café!? That is so awesome! Do you think you could hook me up with a job?" Maria cried excitedly. Michael put his arm around her.

"Ria, don't flip out. Don't you think you're making Liz a little uncomfortable? She barely knows you and you ask her for a job? Down Maria down." She smiled apologetically.

"Sorry." She murmured.

"It's okay, I'll talk to my dad."

"Ok, thanks. I owe you one. That reminds me, Max you have AP Bio with Hardy next right?" Maria turned to her friend.

"Yea," He answered. "Why?"

"Well Liz has it next but I can't take her cuz I'm so going in the opposite direction. Do you think you could take her?" As she spoke, Maria nudged Liz under the table. Liz simply smiled, not looking directly at anyone.

"No problem. I'd be glad to." Max answered. His eyes stayed focus on Liz.

"Well isn't that sweet." Liz heard Tess mutter under her breath as she continued to glare at Liz. Max glanced at his watch and stood up.

"Well Liz, we should probably get on to Bio. I'll introduce you to Ms. Hardy." Liz nodded and rose as well.

"Alright. I'll see you later Maria."

"Hey chica meet me at your locker before 6th kay?" Maria called. Liz nodded her answer as she followed Max out of the quad.

"Ok, I so don't like her!" Tess said once Liz was gone.

"Right, you don't her 'cause Max does." Maria replied.

"Whatever. Like he's even interested in a slut like her!" Tess growled back.

"Look who's talking." Maria was cut off by Michael putting his hand over her mouth.

"Quit you two." He ordered. "She's new." He said referring to Liz. "She seems nice, but we barely know her. Let's just be cautious okay."

"I agree with Michael." Isabel piped up. "She seems nice, but let’s take it easy around her."

"Liz is cool you guys!" Maria defended her new friend. "She's not a threat to anyone."

"I'm going with 'Ria on this one." Alex added. "Liz seemed really nice. I don't think she's a threat at all."

* * *

"You're really quiet." Max told Liz once they arrived at the Biology room. They were so early, not even Ms. Hardy was there.

"I… no… I'm just shy." Liz answered quietly.

"Hey, well don't be, at least around me." Max smiled. Liz couldn't help by smile back.

"Thanks."

"For what?" Max gazed at her quizzically.

"For being nice to me. You and Maria are the only friends I've made so far."

"It had to be hard leaving your friends…" Liz looked away.

"I didn't have a choice." She murmured.

"Mr. Evans." Liz and Max turned to the doorway. Ms. Hardy was walking to her desk. "You are here early, and I do not believe I know you…" she added referring to Liz.

"This is Liz Parker, Ms. Hardy." Max answered.

"Ah yes, the transfer from California. From what I hear, you are a genius when it comes to science and Biology Miss Parker. You'll have no problem catching up. In fact, Mr. Evans, you no longer have a lab partner since Ms. Harding dropped, correct?" Max nodded. "I am assigning Miss Parker as you partner. You are to help her catch up."

"No problem."

Ms. Hardy continued ruffling through papers while Max watched as Liz pulled out her notebook. He couldn't seem to take his eyes form her.

There was something about this new girl that intrigued him. Something different.

"What? Do I have something in my teeth?" Liz asked jokingly. Max blushed, something he rarely did.

"No, sorry. It's just…" They were interrupted by the bell and a stampede of students entering the classroom. Max silently thanked the bell.

Part 2

"So you've got to spill about your time in Bio with Mr. Stud Max." Maria teased Liz as they walked to their lockers after the end of the day.

"Not much to tell…" Liz replied coyly.

"Liz! Hey Liz!" Liz and Maria spun sound as Max Evans came running up, surprisingly without the leech named Tess.

"Yea?" She asked with a smile. Every time she saw Max, she found herself smiling.

"Would you like me to maybe come over or something and catch you up in Biology?' He asked, shuffling his feet nervously.

"Well, I work at the Crashdown until 6, but after that I'm free."

"Great! I'll see you then."

"Maxie! Let's go!" Tess' squeal interrupted them.

"I'll see you later Liz, bye Maria." After Max left Maria shook her head. If the love-struck look on Liz's face was any indication, there were going to be some interesting sparks flying soon.

* * *

Tess carefully studied her boyfriend’s movements as he drove her home. She had noticed the sudden liking he'd taken to the new girl and she definitely didn't like it.

"What were you doing with her Max?" Tess asked, her expression serious and demanding

"Nothing, I just offered to catch her up in Biology." He answered.

"Whatever. Just don't forget whom you're dating." Tess sneered. Max pulled into her driveway and put his jeep in park.

"There is nothing between Liz and I. We barely know each other. Chill." Max didn't wait for Tess to protest. Once she was out of the jeep, he left. Tess watched as his jeep sped off with a deep frown on her face. Max Evans was lying through his teeth and she knew it.

* * *

Liz felt Max Evans' eyes on her back as she handed a customer their order. He'd been there since 4 watching her and sipping on a glass of water. Noticing his empty glass, Liz took the opportunity to talk to him.

"Ya know, most people come to café's for food." She joked as she refilled Max's water.

"Oh… I … um…" Max felt himself blushing. She'd caught him red-handed. Liz laughed.

"I was kidding. I'll be done in a second." Max watched as she walked away.

"Hoping to get Liz Parker for dessert, Maxwell?" Max glanced up at Michael, who stood by his table.

"Why are you here?" Max asked, not replying to Michael's comment.

"Friendly aren't we." Michael replied sarcastically. "Actually, I'm meeting Maria here." Michael paused, watching as Max's eyes traveled back to a certain brunette waitress. "Seriously Maxwell, are you sure this is safe? Why are so suddenly hooked on this chick." Max sighed.

"I am not hooked… She's just nice."

"Uh huh, well just be careful. We don't know her. She could be dangerous." He cut himself off as Liz appeared out of uniform and in a pair of sweats.

"Hey, um… Michael right?" She greeted him.

"Hi Liz." He turned to Max and pointed at the door where Maria had just appeared. "Maria awaits, so I'll see you later man, bye Liz."

Max watched as Michael left, then turned back to Liz.

"So where do you want to study?" Liz smiled.

"It's kinda loud in here. How about upstairs?" He nodded.

"Sure."

* * *

"So Spaceboy, what were you talking to Max about?" Maria asked Michael as they drove to the small movie theater at the outskirts of Roswell. Michael shrugged.

"Nothing important…" Maria looked at him skeptically.

"Right." Michael didn't answer. Maria sighed. "Michael, Liz isn't dangerous. You are just taking Tess' side." Michael cut her off.

"Maria, there is something about her. Something… different." Maria shook her head.

"You always think new people are 'different'." Michael shrugged, but didn't answer. Instead, he pulled off onto the side of the road.

"Maria, I love you," He began. "I just want you to be careful. Something's going to happen, I can feel it in my bones." For a moment Maria gaped at him. Then suddenly, she threw her arms around him.

"Michael, I think that's the sweetest thing you've ever said!" She exclaimed before crushing her lips to his. "I love you too!"

* * *

Max felt his eyes traveling back to Liz's figure stretched out on the floor of her living room. Even in baggy sweatpants and a tank she still looked absolutely gorgeous to him.

-What am I doing?- he asked himself. It wasn't like him to be so suddenly smitten with a girl he hardly knew.

"Max?" Liz's voice brought him out of his trance.

"Yeah?" He answered. Liz smiled.

"I asked if you wanted anything to drink."

"Oh… uh yeah, some water please."

Once Liz left, Max ran a hand through his hair. What was happening to him? Whatever it was, it sure had him going crazy for her.

"Here ya go." Liz's voice brought him back to reality yet again.

"Thanks." He answered. Things were awkwardly silent for a moment as Liz resettled herself on the floor.

"Max, I really appreciate this." Liz said earnestly, bringing her brown eyes to meet his.

"Hey, no problem. Heck you've helped me more than I've helped you I think." He grinned. She smiled.

"Well not just that. You befriended me too." Sadness passed through Liz's eyes before disappearing behind her cloak that hid all emotions. Max put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Electricity pulsed through him as his fingers met the bare skin not covered by her tank.

"The rest of the crew will come around. It was only your first day. They aren't big with new people anyway."

"Yeah, I guess I am a stranger to them, but I did receive a few glares." She said playfully. Max knew she was referring to Tess. However, that quickly left his mind as Liz was ever so close to him and her scent of strawberries washed over him. His resolve and control were all gone. His lips met hers. It was electrifying and fiery, yet only a simple kiss.

"Lianna…" Max murmured.

"Zan…" Liz answered him.

Max and Liz suddenly jerked away and apologized in unison.

"I'm so sorry…"

Liz put her hand over her mouth and Max kept his eyes cast downward. He couldn't meet her eyes. A blush crept to his cheeks.

"Liz, I'm so sorry… I never meant… I should go." Liz didn't answer. She watched silently as Max packed up his things and headed for the door.

"Max?!" She finally called. He spun around, his eyes still downcast. "Don't be sorry." She told him. He gave a small nod and turned around. Liz watched as he left, completely confused at what had just transpired between them. And where did Zan come from?

* * *

Max stood on a balcony dressed in royal attire. Stars blazed in the sky alongside three moons. He turned to the balcony doors as Liz walked to him. She had on a low cut, full ball gown the color of the Caribbean Sea. His breath caught in his throat.

"Lianna," He murmured pulling her to him, gently stroking her bare shoulders. She gazed up at him.

"I love you Zan. Always. In this lifetime and the next."

* * *

Max shot up from his bed. Why the hell was he dreaming about Liz Parker in Antar? He was destined to be with Tess, not this new girl.

Max ran a hand through his hair, his thoughts drifting back to earlier when he'd kissed her.

-I don't necessarily mind having these dreams about Liz. It's not too bad.- He thought with a grin, lying back down.

* * *

Liz jumped awake. Her dream had been so real. She could still picture Max Evans adorned in a tux and the feel of his arms around her, the taste of his lips...

"What is going on?"

* * *

Liz stifled a yawn as she retrieved her books from her locker. She had yet to see Maria and as the first bell of the morning rang she found herself wandering aimlessly through the crowd of students, unsuccessfully looking for her first period.

"Liz?" Liz turned upon hearing her name. She found Maria's tall and lanky friend Alex smiling at her.

"You're Alex right? Maria's bestest?" He grinned.

"Yeah, that's me. Do you need some help?" He asked. Liz nodded.

"Actually yes. I can't remember which way the chorus room is… Maria showed me yesterday, but we went through so many twists and turns…" Alex laughed.

"Hey! Chill, it's cool. You probably didn't realize it yesterday, but I've got chorus first period too." Liz let out a relaxed sigh.

"Thank God." She smiled. Alex grinned, finding it hard not to. The others were wrong about Liz. She was really nice.

* * *

All during first period, Liz felt her thoughts drift to a certain Max Evans and unfortunately for her, the chorus teacher, Mr. Davis, noticed it too.

"Well, well, Miss Parker; are you planning on joining us today?" Liz's eyes shot to the front a blush crept to her cheeks.

"I… yes sir. Sorry." She murmured.

"Well, I'm afraid 'sorry' doesn't cut it Miss Parker; maybe at your old school, but not here. Sing to me the beginning of our Phantom piece." Mr. Davis ordered. Liz fumbled with her music as he began playing the introduction. A few snickers resounded through the classroom, while the entire class stared Liz down.

"In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came. That voice which calls to me, and speaks my name…" Mr. Davis stopped playing and the entire class applauded while gaping at her.

"My, my Miss Parker, you have a lovely voice. Now if your mind could only join us." Liz nodded and smiled.

"Yes sir."

* * *

"Hey Liz!" Liz spun around hearing Alex's voice.

"Yeah?" She answered.

"Firstly, you rock!" He cried giving her a high five. "Secondly, how would you like being lead for my band The Whits. We play Saturday's at Area 51, this hot club at the edge of town." Liz blushed.

"I don't know, I'm not that good…"

"Liz, you are awesome. If you reconsider, we're holding auditions tomorrow afternoon. If you get it, we play this Saturday night. See you!"

As she watched Alex retreat down the hall, Liz found herself seriously considering perhaps joining The Whits.

Part 3

When Liz arrived in the Quad for lunch, she was surprised to see that only Max was there, without Tess attached to him. She hadn't seen him all day, however her thoughts had been on him since he'd left her home the previous night.

"Max," she greeted him as she sat down across the table. "You mind if I join you?" He shook his head.

"Of course not." He smiled. Liz felt her body warm under his gaze. His eyes seemed to ravish her body each time he looked her way. "So, word is you silenced Mr. Davis with your voice. I didn't know you could sing. That's awesome. Alex has been talking about it all morning." Liz laughed.

"I'm not that great… but I guess I did surprise Davis though."

They grew silent, each reflecting on their encounter last night and certain dreams they'd been having.

"Liz… I…" Max began, but he was abruptly cut off by Maria, who'd just entered the quad.

"CHICA! Oh my God! The whole school is buzzing about you singing Davis to silence! Alex hasn't shut up about how awesome you apparently sound!" Maria cried excitedly.

"It's not that big of a deal." Liz replied shyly, a little perturbed that Maria had interrupted her conversation with Max.

"Maxie!" All three head turned to Tess' voice calling for Max to join her at another table.

"Gerbil calls." Maria joked.

"Shut up 'Ria." Max replied, grabbing his book bag and lunch tray. "I'll see you Liz." He smiled at Liz before turning to go join Tess.

"So Lizzie-poo, what's the deal with you and Maxie?" Maria asked as soon as Max was gone.

"Hey ladies…" Liz was saved by the arrogant voice of one the guys Maria had dubbed 'the jocks'.

"Kyle." Maria snuffed. "Do you need something?" She asked in an anything but friendly tone.

"Just an introduction to your gorgeous friend." Kyle smiled cockily at Liz. "Name's Kyle. Captain of the football team."

"Liz." She replied. Liz took in his appearance. It was obvious he was athletic if his height and built were any hint. He was attractive if you went for that buff, domineering type.

"You know, Liz you are already a hot topic here at West. I felt it my duty to introduce myself before the rest of the team decides to call dibs." Kyle put his arm around Liz's shoulder. "So how about a date?" Liz shrugged his arm off and stood up.

"Thanks, but no thanks." She answered coolly, grabbing her book bag. "I'll see you at my locker after 5th Maria." Liz took advantage of Kyle's silence to leave, unfortunately, his senses kicked back in and he was running after her.

"Wait, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to piss you off. Let's start over." He stepped in front of her, making her halt her movements. "Hey, I'm Kyle Valenti." He stuck out his hand. She sighed, accepting his attempt at peace.

"Hi, I'm Liz." Kyle smiled.

"Hey, see now, that wasn't too bad. If you decide to reconsider my date offer, here," He pulled out a pen and piece of paper. "This is my number. Call me if you decide to accept. I hope you do. I'll see you later Liz." Liz shook her head and stuck the small paper in her jeans pocket, before continuing down the hall to Ms. Hardy's room.

* * *

Max watched as Kyle Valenti chased after Liz. His amber eyes were green with jealousy. He'd tuned out Tess and her friend, Pam Troy, who were gossiping in high-pitched voices, when he'd seen Kyle approach Liz and Maria's table.

-Where's Michael when you need him?- Max thought. If Michael had been there, Kyle wouldn't have even approached.

"Tess, uh, I think I'm gonna head on to Biology." Max rose from his seat.

"Okay Maxie, I'll stay here with Pam and see you in 6th." Tess answered before returning to her conversation with Pam.

"Thank God." Max muttered, relieved Tess was staying with Pam.

* * *

Max found Liz sitting at her seat in the front with her eyes cast downward into her Biology book and a pen flying rapidly over paper.

"Liz…" Liz's head rose and she spun around.

"Hey Max." She greeted him with a warm smile, making his heart melt.

"You ok?" He asked, crossing the room to sit next to her. Liz nodded.

"Yeah I'm fine, just that Kyle guy." She answered shaking her head.

"Do you like him?" Max asked, scared for her answer. Liz laughed.

"No way! He's so not my type." Max smiled, relieved by her answer. Feeling bold, he propped his head on his arm and gazed into her eyes.

"What is your type?" Liz met his gaze unwavering. Electricity sparked between them. Breaking the silence, Liz answered.

"I don't know…" she paused for moment collecting her thoughts. "This is going to sound super stupid, but my type is a guy I can never stop thinking about. Someone who can finish my sentences, will hold me in his arms, and love me for me and all my quirky flaws. My soulmate." She smiled softly. "I know… I sound like a silly dreamer."

"No, I don't think its silly. I know what you mean. It's like there is no one good enough until you find that one person." Max answered. Liz bit her lip.

"Is that how you feel about Tess?" She asked. Max looked away.

"Not for Tess. She may think differently, but I don't feel that strongly for her." He wanted to add 'not like the feelings I have for you', but he kept that to himself. How could he know what he felt for Liz was love? However, as they sat in silence waiting for the bell, Max realized that he was falling for this girl beside him. He was falling hard.

* * *

"I don't what it is he likes about her, but all of a sudden Max is like completely into her." Tess huffed as she and Pam walked to their 5th period.

"I wouldn't worry about it Tess. You know if things get out of hand, we have enough social power at this school to bring her down." Pam smiled devilishly, whipping her long blonde hair across her back. "In fact, if you like, I'll handle her. Just a few words and she'll back down like a mouse to a cat."

Part 4

"Orders up!" Liz's eyes flew from her Calculus homework to the window between the front and the kitchen of the Crashdown. Liz straightened her alien-shaped apron as he picked of the order of fries and grilled chicken sandwich. She knew exactly who it belonged to without even a second guess. Tess Harding's friend had introduced herself immediately as Pam Troy. Liz recognized her as the shrew who giggled with Tess day after day by her locker.

"Here's your food. Can I get you anything else?" Liz asked skeptically. She knew Pam wanted something. Pam threw her a fake smile.

"Sit down for a second, I just want to talk to you." Liz shook her head.

"Thanks, but I think I'll stand, you can still talk though." Taken aback, Pam glared at her for a moment before continuing.

"Look hun, me and a few of the girls have noticed your, shall we say, flirtacious manner, around many of the guys here in Roswell, namely two desperately popular guys. Max and Kyle. This is just a small FYI to back off."

"Excuse me?" Liz flared.

"We've been here for years striving for their affections and then you move here and their whole freaking world stops. You can't just do that!" Pam answered snootily.

"Well FYI Pam, I didn't ask for it. I'm sorry that you are all such ho's that none of the guys are into you. Get over it." Liz was completely irritated by Pam's arrogance.

"Liz Parker, I can make you life a living hell at West Roswell. You better watch yourself." Pam hissed.

"I don't give a damn." Liz answered slamming Pam's bill on the table. "$7.50, I'll make it a take out." She withdrew her plate and took it to the kitchen to be placed in a take home box. When she returned Pam was gone. No money was left on the table, but scribbled in red ink on the bill was the phrase "You'll be sorry."

* * *

Max watched from what had become his usual booth as Liz waited on the last few customers. Earlier, when he'd met her eyes, they'd seemed dark and unfeeling. He could sense red hot anger flying from her. He watched as she disappeared into the backroom.

He'd been at the Crashdown for over an hour pretending to study Biology hoping she'd stop to help. However, she only looked at him once and the only words she'd spoken were "Can I help you?" Max sighed and leaned back in his chair. He'd come here to ask her out as friends, and maybe to try and talk to her about the kiss they'd shared. Max glanced toward the double doors leading to the back room and realized Liz still hadn't returned. Rising from his seat, Max strode to the double doors and gently opened them. He heard a quiet sob and Liz's voice:

"Employee's only!" She cried softly. She was sitting on a couch, her hands covering her face.

"Liz? It's me, Max." He said timidly. Her face shot up. Tears streaked her face and her eyes were brimming with more threatening to fall.

"Max, what are you doing back here?" She hiccuped. Max sat down beside her and gently brushed her hair from her face.

"I was worried. You seemed upset." He answered quietly. "What's wrong?" Liz sighed.

"Nothing, I'm fine… I'm just having a hard time adjusting is all." Max could see through her lie, but said nothing.

"Liz I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do?" Liz's face brightened and she seemed to smile.

"Max you've gotta be the sweetest guy I know." She answered. "You've been there for me ever since we first met. I couldn't ask for more." Max smiled, wrapping his arm casually around her shoulders to comfort her. It was so perfect. She fit so perfect.

"Liz, don't freak out on me, but I was wondering…" he paused, nervous as hell. "…would you maybe want to go out to dinner with me Saturday night?" He added hurriedly, "As friends and a thank you…" She grinned.

"A thank you for what?"

"Well thanks to 'me tutoring you', I aced that quiz in Bio today." Liz laughed. "Ok Max, I'd love to go out for dinner with you, but only as friends. I mean you've got a girl and I'm not the type to go around stealing boyfriends. She giggled. Then timidly, she kissed his cheek. "Thanks Max. And I'll definitely see you Saturday night." He watched as she walked away. He vowed then to never forget the way her soft lips had felt.

* * *

To Liz, the next day went by in a flash and before she knew it she was standing in front of Alex and his fellow band members. She had just finished Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me." The Whits were now, in hushed whispers, discussing her performance.

The Whits consisted of three members. Alex played lead guitar and did a few vocals. Jeremy Collins sat at Alex's right. He had the typical 'rockstar' appearance. His hair was sandy colored and hung down to his shoulders. He played bass. It was his garage that they were currently residing in. He had dubbed it the "Official Whit Concert Hall". The other 'Whit' was Ryan Jenkins. He had been introduced to Liz as the guy on Alex's left. He had dark brown hair that covered his blue eyes. He was the drummer. All three wore baggy jeans and t-shirts that had "Whits" written on them.

"Okay," Alex's voice sounded through the quiet garage. "We've talked it over and… you're in!" Liz smiled wide.

"Awesome!"

"Practices are Tuesday's and Thursdays from 5 to 7. We play two Saturdays each month at Area 51, starting at 8." Ryan added.

"Great to have you Parker." Jeremy grinned slapping her shoulder. Liz watched as Ryan and Jeremy left. They seemed really serious about the band.

-But not as serious as Alex.- Liz thought to herself. It was obvious he was the leader.

"Liz you really rock. The crowd will love you!" Alex told her, excitement bubbling in his blue eyes. Liz turned away to grab her tape.

"Thanks Alex, I sure hope so." She answered.

"You know, you ought to come out with me and the guys this Friday."

"I don't know… Ryan and Jeremy…" Liz answered assuming he meant the band. Alex cut her off.

"No, I mean the gang and I. You know, Is, Mike, Maria, and sometimes Max and Tess… if they'd ever join us."

"I don't know… I don't want to be the fifth wheel…" They were all coupled up, Liz worried she'd feel out of place.

"It's not like that. It's not a date thing. We are friends, well minus Tess. So it's basically a bunch of friends hanging out. Every Friday we go to the movies and critique the classic movie they play each week. Then we hit up this ice cream place down the road. You really should come." Liz gave in. She had the perfect opportunity to make some awesome friends.

"Ok."

"Alright!" We meet at 6, I'll fill you in with everything else later. This week is 'Grease'!" Liz smiled.

"Ok, I'll see you then!"

* * *

-And thus, the Civil War was caused not simply because of slavery, but it was also due to the cultural differences between the confederacy and the Union.- Max typed the final sentence of this US History term paper that wasn't due for another week. Silently, Isabel Evans watched her brother from the doorway, brushing through her silky, blonde hair. A few more strokes and she'd be finished.

"What do you want Is?" Max asked spinning around in his chair.

For a moment she was taken aback. She hadn't realized he'd known she was there. However, she quickly reverted back to her Ice Queen self.

"Nothing, just wondering if your highness and your tote were planning on joining the rest of the gang Friday night…" Max knew Isabel was referring to Tess. No one in the group particularly liked Tess, but they accepted her only because she was, as Maria often said, "Czech".

"Actually, Tess is going out with Pam to some party. I told her I wasn't going so, if you guys will have me, I wouldn't mind coming." Max answered. Isabel sighed and came into his room.

"Of course you can come. We've all missed your company." She told him. Moments of awkward silence passed before Isabel finally said what she'd been dying to say for weeks. It had been exactly a month before when she and Michael had come to the resolution that Max couldn't stand Tess. This was after they'd both seen him turn his cheek to her when she'd try to kiss him on more than a few occasions. "Max, why don't you just dump her already?" Max sighed.

"I can't do that Is. It would shatter all out ties with her. The only reason you and Michael put up with her is because of my relationship with her." He answered.

"That's not true, she's like us. We may not like her, but we have to all stay together. Nasedo told us we were stronger as a unit. Don't stay with her only because of us." Isabel replied. Max turned away, taking in what she'd told him.

"I'll think about it."

* * *

Thursday morning flew by for Liz and by lunch, she was excited to be able to just sit. Her stomach was rumbling, quietly reminding her to stop by the vending machines and grab a bag of chips and a bottle of water.

When Liz arrived at what had become her usual lunch table, she was surprised to see only Max.

"Hey Liz!" He greeted her with a smile.

"Hey Max." She answered, sitting across from him. "Where is everyone?" She asked.

"Well, I think Maria and Michael are in the Eraser Room…" Liz cut him off.

"The Eraser Room?" She asked curiously.

"Uh… West Roswell's make-out room…" Max answered quietly.

"Oh…" Liz whispered. Awkward silence followed before Max continued.

"Isabel is finishing a test…"

"Alex is working on some new music." Liz added. Max smiled.

"Oh and Tess is sitting with Pam." The both looked over to where the two girls were sitting. Kyle Valenti was with them. Tess and Pam flaunted themselves all over him. Liz shook her head and turned away.

"So are you excited about Saturday night? I mean with your performance and all." Max asked Liz with yet another smile.

"I'm a little nervous, but I don't know… I've never really performed like this…" Max clasped Liz's hand in his.

"Liz, you're going to do great." He reassured her.

"Thanks." Liz replied. She paused for a moment to take a sip of water. "So what are you doing Friday night?" She asked. Max shrugged.

"I'm probably going to go out with the gang. Tess is going to this party, and honestly, I don't want to go." He answered.

"That makes me feel better. Alex invited me to go out with your gang too. I was worried I was going to be the odd girl out." Max grinned.

"Well, why don't I pick you up and we go together. I mean no sense in driving separately and trust me, you don't want to depend on Maria and Michael." Liz laughed.

"You're right. So ok. I guess I'll see you then." Liz looked down at her hand still clasped in Max's.

"Oh… Sorry." Max apologized, pulling away. Liz blushed.

"It's o…

She was cut off by Maria rushing excitedly to the table.

"OMG! Girl congrats on becoming a Whit!" She exclaimed. "What are you doing after practice? I've got to take you shopping. There's this cute dress…" Maria turned to where Liz was still staring. "Oh hey Max. You don't mind if I steal Liz. You get her all next period." Maria pulled Liz from her seat, while Liz and Max both turned beet red, mouthing silent goodbyes.

* * *

"…I go about my business, I’m doing fine. Besides what would I say if I had you on the line? Same ol' story, not much to say. Hearts are broken every day."

Maria listened as Liz's voice sang the lyrics to her favorite Jewel song. Somehow the Whits had transformed the already beautiful song into a sweet love song. It would be a slow dance hit at the club Saturday night.

"Alright, ready 'Ria?" Liz appeared interrupting Maria's train of thought.

"You know it! You were killer! I can't wait to hear the real deal Saturday night! You ready to shop?" Maria excitedly greeted her friend. Liz nodded.

"Yeah, but I need to be home by 9:30. I've got homework to finish." Maria laughed.

"Alright senorita studious. You're starting to sound like Max."

As the two girls piled into Maria's small Jetta, Maria turned to Liz. "So what is up with you two anyway?" Liz shrugged and turned away.

"I don't know 'Ria. He's with Tess and I'm not the type to play the part of 'boyfriend-snatching-ho'. But it's different with Max. I'm drawn to him." Liz turned back. "It's nothing big. So anyway, where's this 'cute dress' I have got to have?"

Part 5

Liz gazed at her reflection in the full length mirror on her closet door. It was Friday night and she was getting ready for Max to pick her up. She was wearing an emerald off the shoulder top with three-forth length sleeves and a blue jean mini skirt. Maria had talked her into buying it along with a very revealing dress for her debut performance on Saturday. Liz had on only a tad of make-up and her hair was swept up into a ponytail. She glanced down at her nails. Both her tow and fingernails needed a little work. Closing her eyes, she concentrated and waved her hands over her nails. Her chipped, pink nails became perfectly French manicured just as the doorbell rang.

"Liz, Max Evans is here!" Her mother's voice called. Grabbing her purse, Liz left her room and headed into the living room where Max was waiting patiently along with both her parents. Her mom was smiling while her dad was pumping him with questions.

"Have you ever had a ticket for a driving violation?" He asked Max. Liz cut in.

"Dad, Max is a very safe driver and you have nothing to worry about. Enough with the third degree." She smiled, meeting Max's gaze. He stood to greet her, his jaw on the ground.

"Hey Liz." He almost whispered.

"Hey Max." She answered, still smiling. She then turned to her parents. "I'll be home later." Spinning back to Max, she led the way to the door. "Shall we?"

They linked arms and walked out to Max's Jeep.

"Your chariot awaits milady." He opened her door and offered his hand.

* * *

It was killing Max to sit beside Liz and not pull her into his arms. She looked so beautiful. He'd been in awe since her figure had sauntered into where he had been waiting with her parents.

The entire group had given him weird looks when he'd arrived with Liz. All but Alex. Alex had explained he'd invited her. Now they were all seated in the back row of the theater. Isabel, Maria, and Alex were in a deep whisper about 50's music, Michael was asleep, and Liz and himself were silently watching Olivia Newton-John sing "Hopelessly Devoted".

"I love this song." Liz whispered to him, interrupting his concentration on keeping his hands off. It surprised him. She hadn't sad a word since they'd arrived at the theater. He noticed a few tears glistening in her eyes. Taking his hand to her face, he very gently wiped the stray tears away, completely forgetting his strict 'no-touching' policy. His arm went around her shoulders as she laid her head softly against his shoulder. Max couldn't help himself from kissing her forehead.

* * *

"Grease has gotta be the best movie ever!" Maria exclaimed. They were all seated at a huge booth in Summer's Sundaes, an ice cream shop a few blocks from the theater.

"I think I have to disagree with that statement." Michael answered.

"Like you would know, you slept the whole time." Isabel replied with a grin.

"So Liz, as a first-timer to out group movie outing, don't you think we're crazy?" Alex asked their new friend.

"Actually, this was a lot of fun." Liz smiled, taking a bite of her chocolate ice cream. "I never did anything like this in California. I'd always stay home and study for the most part. It's nice to go out with friends."

"Max! There you are baby!" A drunk Tess Harding came floating into the ice cream shop with Pam Troy attached to her hip and equally as drunk. Her eyes found Liz sitting next to Max and her goofy grin became a frown as she blinked her eyes, trying to decide if she was seeing things. "What the hell are you doing here?" She finally growled.

"Well, I'm eating ice cream and hanging out with my newfound friends." Liz answered, turning back to her ice cream. She wasn't about to let Tess Harding ruin her night.

"No, why the hell are you here with MY Max?" She drawled.

"Tess, shut up. I don't belong to you." Max answered before Liz could even think to speak. Everyone but apparently Tess could tell he was hot with anger.

"Yes you do Max. You are mine. We belong together! You need to remember that before you ask out this ugly ass slut." Liz was up before Max could even respond.

"Excuse me Tess, but a) I think Max can make up his own mind and b) the only ugly ass slut I see here is Pam, but that's only because you've been upgraded to bitch-ass whore." She exploded, fire burning in her eyes. "Sorry guys, but I think I'll head on out now. It was fun. Oh and Tess," She added over her shoulder. "Hangovers are a bitch."

* * *

Max watched as Liz stormed out of the parlor.

"Good riddance!" Tess exclaimed, sliding into the booth next to Max. "Hey baby." Fury overcame Max.

"Move." He growled.

"What?!" Tess squeaked.

"Move your skanky ass out of my way." Max shoved her out of his way and took off out of the parlor after Liz.

"Bye Tess." Maria waved with a smirk before Michael could stop her. Tess stood without a comment.

"Come on Tess, you don't need any of them anyway." Pam took her friend's had and they both sauntered out of the parlor, alcohol sill fresh on their breath.

* * *

Liz didn't hear as Max approached the park bench she was seated on. She sat with her eyes focused straight ahead, a flame still flaring within them. She had to cool down before she did something she'd regret.

"Liz?" Max asked cautiously. Her head flew around to where he was standing. As her eyes met his, the flame slowly died.

"M...Max…" She whispered, coming out of her trance.

"I'm so sorry. She had no right…" He began.

"No, really, Max its ok." Liz cut him off.

"No Liz! It's not all right. You didn't deserve any of the things she said to you. You're one of the sweetest people I know." He exclaimed. She didn't answer.

They were quiet for a moment, each taking in the presence of the other. Max was the first to break the silence.

"I…I think I'd like to kiss you." He whispered as their lips slowly moved together.

"I'd think I'd like you to." Liz answered. With that their lips met, sending electricity flowing through their bodies.

* * *

Max watched as Liz sat in the middle of a field of colorful flowers, her shoulders quaking from the sobs wracking through her body.

"This is all my fault." He whispered to himself. He approached her slowly, taking in her appearance. She was wearing a simple but elegant gown of fuchsia. Her shoulders were bare except for a few stray strands of hair that had fallen from her bun.

"Lianna…" He called quietly. He watched as her back stiffened.

"What do you want Zan?" She hissed. Max walked around in front of her and knelt down.

"I Love You." He told her, taking her face gently into his hands. She collapsed into him, sobs continuing. "I'm so sorry Lianna. I love you, not her! We'll find a way to fix this."

* * *

Max and Liz jerked away from each other.

"I…" They each murmured in unison. Max shook his head trying to clear it.

"I should, uh, go ahead and take you home, but we're still on for tomorrow night right?" Liz nodded.

"Yea."

* * *

Max awoke Saturday morning, his mind still buzzing from the precious night and the dreams that had followed it. They’d been swimming in a lake of teal. It was like nothing he’d ever seen before. Where was it? And more importantly, why was Liz with him? He’d never had dreams of Antar with Tess in them and he was destined to be with her. Where theses memories or simply dreams of lust? Somehow Max knew it wasn’t the latter of the two.

The phone’s persistent ringing interrupted his thoughts.

“Hello?” He answered groggily.

“Max,” Tess’ voice hissed from the phone. “I’m willing to forgive you for last night if you stop talking to THAT girl.”

“Excuse me Tess?” Max demanded, irritated by her arrogance.

“You heard me Maxie. I forgive you as long as you get rid of her.” Tess replied. Max exploded.

“I refuse to stop talking to Liz because you don’t like it. And I’m not the one needing forgiveness. YOU stormed in last night and treated Liz like shit and expected me to catch you in my arms. Hell No! I have tried Tess, I have tried to force this to work but I can’t any longer. I don’t have feelings for you Tess. You are a stuck up bitch who thinks the world revolves around her, but it doesn’t Tess. I don’t love you.”

“What?!” Tess cried.

“Let me spell it out for you... its over, O-V-E-R!” Max was livid, but he realized the Pod Squad couldn’t lose her. “Tess, I’m sorry, but its unfair to lead you on. Michael, Is and I need you here as a friend and alien. But I refuse to continue to date you.” He explained in a more calm voice.

“This is all because of that slut!” Tess answered angrily. “You’ll be sorry Max Evans!” She yelled slamming the phone down. Max shook his head.

“Somehow I doubt it.”

* * *

“Liz babe, I so owe you for getting me this job!” Maria declared as she bounced over to where Liz was standing behind the counter of the Crashdown. Liz had spoken to her dad the first day of school about Maria and her enthusiastic need for a job. He’d ecstatically hired her immediately.

“We need all the help we can get.” He had said with a smile.

Liz shrugged in answer to her friend.

“My dad needs the help. It wasn’t too hard.”

“Well thanks anyway.” Maria told her. They were quiet for a moment. The lunch rush had ended and the only people left in the cafe were a family sitting in the corner. “So chica, you excited about your date with Max?” Maria asked.

“It’s not a date ‘Ria, its just a couple of friends eating dinner.” Liz replied nonchalantly as she wiped the counter clean.

“Right! That’s why he practically dumped Tess to go after you last night, which by the way, your exit was awesome!” Maria exclaimed. Liz rolled her eyes, but didn’t answer. Her eyes found the clock on the wall.

-Only 4 more hours until dinner with Max.-

Part 6

Max stood in Liz’s living room silent. Her father was staring him down and her mother was smiling at him.

“So, where are you taking my daughter, Max?” Mr. Parker asked him. Max smiled kindly.

“Out to dinner, sir, then dancing.”

“She’s to be home by 12.” Mr. Parker replied sternly.

“One, dad.” Liz’s voice answered from the hallway. Max lifted his gaze to where she’d appeared and his jaw dropped. She was wearing a black, spaghetti strap dress that was very revealing. It came down to just above her knee, giving Max an excellent view of her lovely legs.

“Liz you look incredible.” He told her, bringing his eyes to her face. Her soft, brown hair fell gently on her bare shoulders.

“Thanks, you do too.” Forgetting about Liz’s parents, Max strode across the room and took her hand.

“Ready?” She nodded. Smiling at Mr. and Mrs. Parker, they headed for Max’s waiting jeep.

* * *

“Sorry about my parents. They can be really protective sometimes, especially Dad.” Liz told Max as they pulled up in front of a low-key Mexican restaurant. The sign was neon red with a green frog in a sombrero. “Senor Chows, hun?” Liz joked.

“Is Mexican okay?” I just assumed...” Liz cut Max off.

“You assumed right. I love Mexican. It’s the only place you can put hot sauce all over your food and not be stated at like you’re some freak.” Max opened her door.

“You like hot sauce too huh? I thought I was the only one. You’re right, hot sauce here is...”

“Normal.” Liz almost whispered, finishing his sentence for him.

“Wow! You love hot sauce and finish my sentences. What more could a guy want?” Max joked leading the way to the entrance. Liz smiled up at him, but didn’t answer.

They were seated immediately and their orders were taken before they started talking again.

“I wanted to uh let you know that Tess and I are over.” Max began.

“Oh... Max, I hope it wasn’t because of me...” Liz replied earnestly. Sure, are first she’d joked with Maria about Tess, but she’d never been serious about breaking them up.

“No, well yes, well kind of... I want to get to know you better and she didn’t agree with it, but our relationship was already going down hill. She’s never been what I’ve wanted.” Max answered.

“Max... I’m so sorry...” Max took her hand. Her eyes met his.

“Don’t be.” He told her.” It wasn’t your fault.

* * *

“She’s here.”

“What?”

“She’s here, Jaco, you moron. She came straight for him.”

“What, like she knew...”

“Exactly. So just get here so we can finish the job.”

* * *

Max watched from a booth in the corner as Liz performed The Whits new hit, “You Thought”. Liz’s voice was like an angel’s, so serene and lovely. Not to mention she looked gorgeous.

“...And you thought you knew
Who I was...
And you thought you knew
My heart...
But baby,
You thought wrong...”

Max rose with the rest of the club to offer a standing ovation for The Whits and especially their newest addition, Liz. Liz’s smile warmed up the room while Alex took the mic to announce their final song.

“You guys have been great! And for our last song, we’ll be playing the classic “I’ll Be”, by Edwin McCain.

Liz’s eyes met his, as her voice devoured the room.

I’ll be your crying shoulder
I’ll be love suicide
I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life...

Max was mesmerized.

* * *

“I want to be with you Zan.” Lianna told him, embracing him.

“You are. I’m not going anywhere.” She gazed up at him hotly.

“No Zan,” Passion burning in her eyes. “I want to be with you.”

* * *

...Rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
You're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive not dead
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache, that hang from above...

* * *

Tangled sheets, heated kisses, passionate embraces, sighs, cries...

“Zan!”

“Lianna!”

* * *

...I've been dropped out, burned up, fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on, Remembered the things that you said...

* * *

“I love you Zan. You’re my other half.” Zan cupped Lianna’s chin.

“You are all there will ever be for me, Lianna. You are my goddess, my love.” His lips met hers.

* * *

I'll be the greatest fan of your life... the greatest fan of your life...

The crowd exploded as Max fell back in his booth.

“Lianna...”

* * *

“I’ll see you guys later!” Liz called to Alex, Ryan, and Jeffrey. She was just about to re-enter from the back room, when the door flew open. Tess Harding stormed in to the room. Liz let out a sigh.

“What do you want?” She asked.

“You got what you wanted.” Tess huffed. Liz shook her head.

“What?”

“Max, you slut. You got Max!” Tess fumed.

“Look, just because Max isn’t into you, don’t take it out on me. Max and I are friends. Get over it.”

“Whatever. I just came to tell you to stay away or else. Max is way out of your league.” Liz laughed is disbelief.

“Give it up.” She replied, pushing past Tess.

“I warned you!” Tess called angrily. Liz ignored the blonde bimbo and went to meet Max.

* * *

Max’s eyes met Liz’s figure as she sauntered from the back.

“Hey.” She greeted him.

“You were great!” Max exclaimed, trying to keep distance between them, the images of them from earlier still fresh in his mind.

“Thanks... It felt so good to be on stage.” Liz replied. Max was silent for a moment, his mind still reeling. “Max?” His eyes jerked up meeting Liz’s concerned smile.

“Sorry. So uh do you want to stay here or...?” Max asked sheepishly.

“Actually, could we go for a walk or something? I’ve had enough of the club life for one night.” Max smiled.

“Sure.” Taking her hand, he led her out of the club.

* * *

The air was crisp as Max and Liz laid gazing up at the stars. They’d driven out to the desert, a few miles out of town.

“Do you ever wonder what’s really up there?” Liz murmured, her eyes scanning the clear sky for the twinkling specks. The night was clear and cool, perfect for stargazing.

“Every time I look up and see the stars.” Max answered, turning on his side to look at Liz. The moonlight was dancing all over her face, making her even more beautiful. Liz turned to face him

“Me too.” Max took a deep breath as their lips came even closer. The kiss was electric. Flashes passed before their eyes. They were the flashes Max had seen earlier in the club. Their passion heightened. Max had never felt the way he was feeling about Liz before. Knowing the territory this could lead them to, he pulled away and gently stroked Liz’s soft brown hair wondering if she’d seen what he had.

“That was amazing.” Liz murmured.

“You don’t know what you do to me Liz Parker... I barely know you, but I think I’ve fallen in love with you.” Max’s hazel eyes met Liz’. Liz smiled.

“I think I know what you mean.” She whispered, leaning in to kiss him again.

* * *

“Max, I had a great time tonight.” Liz told him as they pulled to a stop in front of the Crashdown.

“Yeah, me too.” He murmured with a grin.

Their lips met more passionately then before. Liz reluctantly pulled away and gazed up to where her room was. She bit her lip.

“Do you want to come up?” She asked cautiously.

“I don’t know, Liz are you sure?” She took Max’s hand, gaining courage she never knew she had. Max Evans did that to her.

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.” She told him. “If you decide to... my balcony’s around the side.” She kissed him softly before turning to go inside.

Part 7

“Did you have a good time Lizzie?” Mrs. Parker asked her daughter when Liz entered the living room. Liz smiled.

“Yea mom, I did.”

“I’m glad. Max seems like a wonderful boy.”

“He is.” Liz answered before kissing her parents good night and heading for her room.

She locked her door behind her and let her gaze travel to the window. Sure enough, there stood her Greek god.

“Hey.” She greeted him, opening the window so he could get in.

“Hey.” Max answered awkwardly.

* * *

Max watched as Liz fumbled with her stereo. He wasn’t sure why he’d decided to come up. His intentions were never to have sex with Liz. Sure he’d thought about it, but it wasn’t like him to be so irrational. Hell, he was still a virgin. But Liz Parker changed everything about him. She was a different, lovely change from what he was used to.

“Liz, are you sure this is what you want? We don’t have t...” Liz put a finger to his lips.

“I want to be with you Max.” She whispered, reciting the same line from his vision. He knew should stop. He had to figure out what it meant, but damnit she was so close and she still had on that revealing dress. He couldn’t stop himself from taking her into his arms and kissing her senselessly. He could faintly hear Sheryl Crow’s “I Shall Believe” in the background, but all he could think about was making love to the woman in his arms.

Come to me now
And lay your hands over me
Even if it's a lie
Say it will be alright
And I shall believe

I'm broken in two
And I know you're on to me
That I only come home
When I'm so all alone
But I do believe...

Max’s hands roamed all over her body. They slid to the zipper of her dress on the small of her back.

“Are you sure?” He asked one more time. Her answer was multiple kisses down his jaw and a soft ‘yes’ in his ear. The slinky dress fell from her body as they both fell back onto the bed.

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly you won't give up on me
And I shall believe...

Max let out a gasp as Liz’s hands began sliding up his chest. She removed his shirt with ease. Her gasp sent electrifying shivers of pleasure coursing through his body. Liz’s only thought was of how sexy he was. How had she landed such as Adonis?

Open the door
And show me your face tonight
I know it's true
No one heals me like you
And you hold the key

Never again
would I turn away from you
I'm so heavy tonight
But your love is alright
And I do believe...

It felt so right for them to be together. Her naked body felt so good joined with his. They each cried out in ecstasy when they reached their peak.

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly
You won't give up on me
And I shall believe
I shall believe...

Max gently stroked Liz’s hair as she slept soundly beside him. He had so much to think about. Their relationship had crossed a huge border and she didn’t know his secrets. Despite how bad he felt about being so dishonest with her, he couldn’t help but think how perfect it had been. She was so beautiful. He barely knew her and here he was lying in bed after multiple times of making love. Yes, it was making love. Sex was too bland a term to describe what they had done. No matter the ‘irrationality’ of their actions, Max didn’t regret a single bit of it. It had all been utterly perfect. He would tell her tomorrow about everything. But for now, he wanted to enjoy this moment of his life where everything was just right.

With that thought, Max tenderly kissed Liz’s brow and fell into a deep sleep, a smile resonating upon his lips.

* * *

“Where have you been all morning?” Maria’s voice greeted Liz when she’d finally made her way downstairs the next morning. Liz couldn’t remove the smile radiating upon her face. She had woken up in Max’s arms only a few hours before. He had left an hour later with a promise that he would see her very soon.

“Sorry Ria. I slept a little late this morning.” Liz replied, practically skipping up to the bar. “And what a beautiful morning it is.” Maria cocked a crown.

“Uh huh... What did you and Max do last night that left you so giddy Lizzie-poo? My sources said you left the club with him after that killer Edwin McCain performance.” Liz blushed, but kept her smile.

“None of your business.” She replied coolly, wondering if she was glowing on the outside as much as she was inside.

Before Maria could retort, Liz felt a familiar buzzing in her head. This morning she could feel her powers humming whenever he was near. It was a new development she knew she had to analyze, but her priorities were Max. It was imperative he understand her secret before they let this relationship get too out of hand. She knew she should have never made love with him, but she didn’t regret a single moment of it. It was the right thing, she could feel deep inside of her.

Liz spun around to find Max entering the doorway.

“Hey.” He said quietly, basking in the glow of her presence.

“Hi.” She answered, still smiling.

“You um doing anything for lunch?” He asked, his eyes never leaving her figure. Liz broke their trance and turned to Maria. Maria sighed.

“Sure, sure, you horn dogs go off and have your lunch. I’ll cover your shift.” She said rolling her eyes.

“Thanks Riz!” Liz replied, hugging her friend before turning back to Max.

Max took her hand and led her to his waiting jeep.

* * *

The lunch rush was dying down when Maria spotted a lone guy sitting alone in the corner booth. Sighing, she grabbed a menu and her order pad and trudged over to his table.

“Hi! Welcome to the Crashdown. My name’s Maria and I’ll be your waitress today. What can I getcha to drink?” She said in her perkiest voice. The guy smiled.

“I guess a coke would be nice, but I’m actually looking for someone. You know a Liz Parker?” He asked in a charming voice. Maria smiled.

“Yea, she works here, but she’s out for the moment. I’ll tell her you came by... uh...”

“Jason, Jason Earl.”

“Alright Jason. I’ll let her know.”

Part 8

“Max... I have something I really need to talk to you about...” Liz began, turning on her side to face him. Max had taken them back to the park for a picnic lunch. They were lying on a blanket looking up at the clouds just as they had the night before. He leaned over and wiped a stray strand of her beautiful auburn hair away from her face, his smile slowly disappearing as he realized he had something to share with her as well. He knew he had to get it out before they progressed any further. She deserved to know the truth.

“Yeah, me too.” He replied. “Can I go first?” He asked. Liz nodded.

“Sure.”

He cupped her face in his hands, her eyes giving him all the reassurance he needed.

“I... I just wanted to let you know last night was the best night of my life. I love you Liz.” He told her. She smiled at him.

“I love you too Max. I never thought I could feel this way about someone so quickly, but then I met you...” He kissed her gently. Liz could tell he was worried about something. “What’s wrong?” Max frowned.

“This is hard. I don’t want to lose you, but you have to know the truth Liz. The truth about who I am.” She looked at him curiously. Nothing could have prepared him for what came out of her mouth that next second.

“You’re like me aren’t you. You’re an alien.”

* * *

Max’s mouth fell agape in shock. He jumped up and began pacing the desert floor.

“You’re like me aren’t you. You’re an alien.” Liz’s words replayed in his mind over and over again.

“Max, please, say something...” Her voice sounded in his ears, bringing him back to reality. He was silent for a moment, unsure of what to say.

“The flashes... our attraction... Lianna.... It all makes sense...” He stopped pacing, one question plaguing his mind. “If you’re an alien, why were you in California?” She shrugged.

“According to my parents, my grandmother found me on her doorstep. I was only a mere baby. Knowing my mother and father had been desperate for a child, she took me to them. That’s all I know. My grandmother told me that all would be answered on my eighteenth birthday, but she died before we had the chance...” Tears welled in Liz’s eyes, Max pulled her into his arms.

“Michael, Isabel, and I were found wandering in the desert when we were seven. We’d just left the pods. Izzy and I were taken in by our parents, but Michael didn’t get off so lucky. He had a tough childhood. Fortunately, my dad helped Michael earn his independence. Tess showed up when we were all thirteen with our guardian, Nasedo.”

They sat in silence, each pondering these new revelations.

“So what does this mean Max?” Liz finally asked, gazing up at him, confusion and uncertainty filling her beautiful eyes.

“It means you’re one of us.” He answered, smiling down at her. Deep down he knew this was meant to be. Liz was his one and only.

* * *

“Its about time you showed up.” Maria told Liz when she finally returned from her outing with Max. Liz only smiled and whispered her apology before going into the bathroom to change. Maria shook her head with a smirk. Those two were head over heels. Remembering about Jason, Maria knocked on the door.

“Yea?” Liz’s voice sounded.

“You had a visitor after you left.” Maria replied.

“Oh? Who was it?”

“A Jason Earl.” Liz was silent. “Liz?”

The door burst open.

“I’ve got to find Max.” Liz’s voice was frantic.

“Liz? What is it?” Maria was shocked at Liz’s reaction.

“Look Maria, if he comes back don’t tell him anything. Tell my parents I’m staying with you tonight to study!”

“But Liz...”

“Maria, please. Just do it.” Liz cut her off. Grabbing her cell phone and purse she quickly dialed Max’s number. If Jason was here, she didn’t have a lot of time.

* * *

Max let his gaze travel to Liz’s figure. She’d called him only a mere hour ago raving about how she needed him, how everything was wrong, how she was in danger. Danger had gotten his attention. However, she had not elaborated. Right now, she sat huddled in a ball. Her eyes held this focus. It was as if she didn’t even know where she was.

“Liz...” He said her name softly.

“Left at the intersection.” Was all she said, before reverting back to her focus point.

“Liz, what are you doing?” Max asked. He was desperate for information. Why was she in danger? Who was the threat? Why were they driving to unknown place in the middle of nowhere?

“We are going to my grandmother’s home.” Liz said aloud, shocking him.

“Wait... you can read minds?” He asked, looking at her uncertainly.

“No and yes. I can’t read minds per say, I can read emotions. However, ever since we... well you know... I can hear your thoughts periodically in moments when your emotions are heightened. Like now.” She answered. She brought her eyes to his. “I’m sorry Max. I’m so sorry I ever got you involved.” She told him, tears running down her cheeks.

He took his free hand and wiped the tears from her face, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“Liz, I need to know what I’m involved in. What’s going on?” Liz looked away.

“I met Jason in the eighth grade. We became fast friends. I learned he was like me a year later, and our friendship blossomed. I finally had someone to talk to. Not even my parents know.” She paused. “We were very happy. Last year he and I finally started dating. My parents loved him. I thought I loved him. But boy was I wrong. This past summer, he changed. He started attacking me, hurting me. I couldn’t quite understand his emotions, until two weeks ago. I finally sensed what his ultimate plans were. He was going to kill me. So I told my parents he had threatened me, and we left that night. We came here because we wanted to be close to where my dad grew up. Jason never knew about my grandmother. We never thought he’d look here. I never thought he’d find me. But he’s here Max. He’s close. I can sense him.”

Liz became silent, her story finally unfolded. The truth finally out. She was in danger. Grave danger, and Max knew he had to keep her safe.

“Is that what you were doing earlier, trying to sense his emotions?” Max finally asked. She nodded.

“Yes, I can sense him, but he is guarding his emotions very well. It’s obvious he doesn’t want me getting any reading from him.”

“Why are we going to your grandmothers?” Max had so many questions.

“I don’t know. I just feel that there is something there that can help me understand who I am. I think that if I find that out I will be able to figure out this situation with Jason... Or at least I hope I will... Turn right here.”

Max turned into a long driveway, and within a few minutes, a two story ranch house could be seen in the distance.

And so it began.

Part 9

“My dad didn’t want to settle my grandmother’s estate. I don’t think he could have handled it, her death really upset him. So he just left the house alone.” Liz told Max once they entered her grandmother’s home.

On the outside, paint was chipping and vines were overcoming the once beautiful ranch style estate. The inside wasn’t quite as bad, though dust did cover everything except the covered furniture. Pictures of the family still sat on the mantle and a few plotted plants rotted to their deaths in the corners.

Max watched as Liz walked into the living room, a tranquil smile overcame her face.

“When a thunderstorm would blow through, Grandma Claudia and I would sit in here and watch it through the windows.” Max smiled at her memory. He could tell that Grandma Claudia was a very special person to Liz.

“So I guess we should start looking.” Max said finally. Liz’s head snapped up, bringing her back from her thoughts. She nodded.

“Yeah, um I’m not sure what it looks like. I... I really don’t know what ‘it’ is... I just always thought I’d know...” Max silenced her.

“Shhh. It’s okay. I’ll just look for anything out of the ordinary.” He told her before beginning to search through the room.

Liz walked over towards the recliner her Grandmother had always sat in and began searching through the cushions. As soon as her fingers touched the fabric, she got a flash

* * *

Claudia sat in her chair writing in a leather bound journal. She knew she didn’t have much time and that her end was near. A single tear trickled down her cheek. Liz had to know the truth.

* * *

Liz let out a small gasp.

“Liz!” Max rushed to her side and caught her before she fell over. She looked up at him, excitement bubbling in her brown eyes.

“She was here Max. She was sitting in this very chair just a month ago writing in it.”

“What does it look like?” Max asked.

“It’s of a journal; brown, leather bound.” She told him.

As Max began searching the bookshelf, something led Liz to old record player. She felt almost in a trance. Bending down, she shuffled through the records. Her fingers met the cold feel of leather and her heart raced. There it was. The truth to her existence.

“I found it.”

They sat down on the covered couch and together, opened the cover.

There was nothing there.

Liz flipped through the pages frantically. Nothing.

“This is it. I know it is. I can feel it in my bones.” She said in frustration. Max took the book from her hands, and flipped to the back. A royal seal rested on the inside of the back cover. Placing his hand to the seal, Max prayed for anything.

His prayers were answered.

The words appeared out of nowhere. And in the front, there was a letter addressed to Liz.

My dearest granddaughter

I have always known you were special. Not because of what you are, but who you are: A wonderful young woman with a big heart. But as I’m sure you already know, you are also special in many other ways. I was only told the basics, the man who gave me this book did not want me to know too much. He said it would put me in danger. So instead, he allowed me to write a letter for you to read before you were told your story. I love you dear and I wish you the best. For if you are reading this, then I know that I am gone. But as long as I am in your heart, I shall never truly be gone.

Love Always
Grandma Claudia

Liz’s heart gave a lurch as fresh tears fell down her cheeks. Max gently stroked her hair and kissed her forehead wanting to ease her pain. When Liz was ready, they turned the page and began the story that would change their lives.

* * *

You are the royal four. Created to free our planet of its doom. You were recreated from your previous selves and sent to Earth as a protective measure. The story you are about to hear tells of your previous selves.

Zan and Vilandra were the children of the crown of Antar. Rath and Lianna were the children of the crown of Velore, Antar’s neighbor and friend. The neighboring planet of Zion was ruled by a man named Khivar. In hopes of establishing peace, the king of Velore betrothed his daughter, Lianna, to Khivar. Antar agreed that Khivar’s daughter Ava be betrothed to Zan.

However, neither planet expected for their children to meet and fall in love. Lianna met Zan on a cool winter night during an Antarian Ball. They fell head over heels and continued to meet secretly, only their siblings knowing the truth. Tired of hiding, they presented their families with the hopes of bonding together. At first the families rejected the idea. However after seeing how in love the two were, they agreed, and in doing so, cut all ties with Khivar, angering him.

On their wedding day, Khivar killed both Zan and Lianna claiming that if he could not have her, no one would.

The royal families created you as the reincarnates and sent with you two protectors and the essences of two Prophets, one from each planet in hopes that they would guide and watch over you.

Unfortunately, the crash was unanticipated. One protector was killed, leaving only I. I was unable to track the essences of the prophets. Lianna’s pod was damaged indefinitely. Forced into hiding by the American Military I gave Lianna to Claudia along with a note that she was important. Claudia then gave Lianna to her parents. I had to leave the rest of you and prayed that you would all be okay. I was on the run for 16 years before I finally returned. You were all gone. I found Claudia and explained what little I could. She promised to take care of Lianna and gave her to her son and his wife. We both thought that would be enough, but
* * *

“It just stops.” Max stated in confusion.

“I know it doesn’t make any sense... what happened to our protector... the prophets?” Liz asked aloud. Max turned to face her.

“Maybe the feds returned.”

“Maybe.. but...” Liz cut off, dropping the book to the floor as she fell into a trance.

* * *

“I found them.”

“Good. Where are they?”

“To grandmothers house she went. Just like we thought. I can’t believe that old hag knew all along.”

“Yeah, well just get the job done. Khivar’s getting antsy. He wants her now before its too late. It’s already been two days.”

Part 10

Liz collapsed against Max in exhaustion.

“He’s here...” She murmured.

“That was pretty good Liz. I certainly underestimated you.” A deep voice echoed from the doorway. They both looked up.

“Jason...” She whispered. Max jumped up, placing himself between Liz and Jason. Hell would freeze over before he let Jason anywhere near her.

“Ah, and isn’t this a nice addition. The once mighty King Zan.” He laughed. “Do you actually think you can hurt me? You’re only a measly boy. And even when you were King, you were no match for Khivar.” Max glared at Jason. “I’m going to enjoy killing you again.” Jason smirked evilly.

“What do you want with me?” Liz’s voice spoke from behind Max. She was standing now, though still obviously fatigued from her flashes. Jason laughed.

“You have no idea how much power you hold in that little body of yours, huh Lianna? That doesn’t surprise me. No one but Khivar knew of the prophecy. Not even your family.” He took a step closer. “For generations the only children born to the royal family of Velore were male. It was said that the first female born would have great power. The man who fathered her first born child after she was 18 would be given that power and their child would someday control all of our galaxy.”

“But I’m not going to be eighteen for another month.” Liz said allowed.

“Lianna’s birthday was two days ago, Lizzie-poo.” Jason told her menacingly. “And Khivar wanted you a week ago, but you left, making things a tad more difficult. But that doesn’t matter now, because you are coming with me.”

“That’s why he killed both Zan and Lianna. She was with child. Zan’s child.” Liz cried out suddenly.

Jason smirked.

“You’re smarter than you look.” He replied. “But I’ve had enough of these games. Khivar is waiting.”

“She’s not going anywhere!” Max shouted.

“And what are you going to do about it?” Jason sneered. Before Max could respond, Jason sent a bolt of energy at him. Max was sent flying through the hair, landing against the bookshelf and falling to the ground. He didn’t move.

“MAX!!!” Liz cried.

“Too bad Lizzie-poo. Your knight in shining armor didn’t live up to his title.” Liz turned to Jason, her eyes burning with fury.

“I’m not going anywhere.” She said in voice not quite her own. Her eyes flashed to black, and a beam of energy flew from her hands, sending Jason flying through the walls. She walked swiftly to where he lay. “Go to hell.” She told him as she attacked him again.

“There will be others!” He screamed before bursting into ashes.

Exhausted, Liz collapsed into a heap on the floor, darkness over taking her.

* * *

Liz’s eyes fluttered open to unfamiliar surroundings. Her body ached all over.

“Liz!” She felt Max’s presence just as his voice graced her ears.

“M... Max? Where am I?” She murmured, still feeling rather groggy.

“I brought you to my home.” He replied.

“But your parents....”

“Don’t know you’re here.” He finished, sitting at the edge of his bed. “How do you feel?” He asked, gently stroking her soft brown hair in a soothing fashion.

“My head is aching. What happened? All I can remember is Jason attacking you.... after that, it’s all blank.” She asked, sitting up slowly.

“You don’t remember? You killed Jason, Liz. You saved both our lives.” Max told her. Her eyes gazed up at him, confusion bubbling in their depths.

“What...” Liz shook her head. “I can’t believe I killed him.” She whispered. Max took her hand.

“You did what you had to do Liz. If you hadn’t... I hate to think about what might have happened to you.” They were silent for a moment. Each reveling in the thoughts of Khivar and his plans for Liz.

“Jason said there’d be more.” Max said finally. Liz nodded solemnly.

“I don’t doubt it. I think Khivar is going to do whatever he can to get to me.” But as her mind processed what Jason had said, she began to see a difficulty. Her Antarian birthday had been two days ago. She and Max had... “Oh God.” She put her hand to her mouth, unable to stop the quiet gasp.

“What is it?” Max asked desperately, worry etched across his features.

“Max...I or Lianna or whatever turned eighteen the night before we....” His eyes widened.

“So you think...” He didn’t even have to ask, the answer was in her eyes.

“Yeah... I’d say it’s a possibility.” She replied.

“Take my hand.” Max said, holding his hand out. Liz took it. “Now look into my eyes and concentrate only on you and me. Block everything out.” She nodded and did what she was told. Flashes passed before her open eyes of she and Max in a different world and time. They were in love then. It was obvious even to the naked eye. As Max pulled away, Liz couldn’t contain her smile. Whatever he had to tell her, she’d accept. This was meant to be. But she knew deep down already the truth, she was pregnant with Max’s child. His words only further confirmed her suspicions.

“You are.” She nodded. A moment of silence passed between them, before Max began again. “I think we should tell the others.”

“Michael, Isabel, and Tess?” Liz confirmed.

“And Maria and Alex.” Max replied.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to drag Maria and Alex into something so dangerous.”

“They may not have any powers, but it would still make me feel better to know at least someone was with you I trusted. And I more than definitely trust Maria and Alex.” Max paused for a moment in deep thought. “But I don’t think Tess should know.” Liz gazed up at him confused.

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. We can tell her about Khivar, but I don’t want her to know about the baby. A, I don’t think she’d appreciate knowing given our previous history. And B, there is something about her, I no longer trust. She told me she was my wife in our previous life. I’ve never truly believed it, and now we’ve confirmed it. How do we know she wasn’t in league with Khivar? He was her father after all. And why would they send her with us in the pods. Something just doesn’t add up.” Liz put her hand on Max’s shoulder.

“And how do we know that she was? Maybe it’s just what she was told to believe all these years. That she was your wife. She was intended to be, after all.” Max sighed.

“Perhaps. But I would feel better if we neglect to tell her about the baby. I don’t think she should know.” Liz nodded.

“Alright. I trust you to make the right decisions Max. You are my King and my love. We will do as you say.” Max smiled.

“Okay. I’ll call everyone together. Do you feel up to it?”

“I’m fine.” She replied, standing up.

“Good. We’ll meet them in an hour.”

* * *

“She’s what?!” Isabel’s voice echoed across the walls of Michael’s apartment.

“She’s one of us.” Max said once more. He’d just explained everything about Jason and Khivar. And why they were after Liz. Liz had sat quietly by his side the entire time, her hands folded calmly in her lap. She was still rather weak from her encounter earlier with Jason.

Isabel, Michael, Maria, Alex, and Tess were all strewn throughout the room, each with a look of uncertainty on his or her face.

“And how do you know this for a fact Max? How do you know you can trust her? For all we know she’s one of Khivar’s cronies.” Tess demanded, her eyes red with anger.

Everyone went silent, waiting for a response. However, the answer came neither from Max nor Liz, but from Michael.

“She is one of us.” All eyes turned in shock to Michael. He’d been very quiet since learning that Liz was his sister. For someone who’d always wanted a family, this was an exciting and confusing new development. But deep down, he could feel it. Liz was his sister. And she was on their side. He turned to Isabel. “Can’t you feel it Is? Look deep into your soul. It feels right. Liz is one of us.” His eyes held so much feeling.

Isabel closed her eyes. She smiled slightly, before reopening them.

“She is. Tess don’t you feel it?” Tess frowned.

“I don’t believe this! She shows up out of nowhere and within a week you all suddenly believe she’s one of us. It took you months to finally trust me!” She cried angrily. “Fuck it! Trust this bitch, but don’t come running to me for help!” She yelled, storming out of the room.

Max made a move to go after her, but Liz stopped him.

“Let me.” She said softly, before hurrying after Tess. She caused this. She had to make it right.

* * *

“Tess!” Liz called out to the blonde as she exited Michael’s apartment. Tess spun around in the middle of the front lawn, her cheeks flushed with fury.

“What the hell do you want?!” She challenged.

Liz approached her cautiously.

“I’m really sorry. I never meant to cause trouble… but I promise, I’m not a fraud and I’m not out to hurt anyone.” She said with sincerity. She didn’t want to be the cause of the group splitting up.

“Look you skank, I don’t give a shit what you meant to or didn’t mean to do, you’ve screwed up my life, taken my boyfriend, my friends. Everyone fucking adores you. But know this, I don’t trust you and I will be watching. So watch your back Lianna.” Tess growled before storming off to her car. Liz stood in shock. This was not what she had meant to happen. And as she walked back into the house, she realized that she and Max still had to tell the others about their baby…

* * *

Michael’s apartment was unnervingly silent as the group of teens waited for Liz to return. It was Maria who finally broke the uneasy silence.

“So… Liz is supposed to be the completion of the four square… then how does Tess fit in? She was claimed to be Max’s wife, but it’s obvious that that is not the case. Where does she fit into the puzzle then?” Maria voiced her suspicions.

“Yeah, something isn’t right there. I mean why would they send Khivar’s daughter along with the four? It doesn’t make sense.” Alex agreed.

“We can’t just start assuming Tess is on Khivar’s side. The notebook never said Ava was involved and plus if Tess were in league with Khivar, why wouldn’t she have already attacked. She’s had plenty of opportunities.” Isabel replied. Michael nodded.

“I agree with Iz. It was never said that Ava had anything to do with Khivar or his plans. And if Khivar is coming, we need all the help we can get.”

Max, who’d sat quietly waiting for Liz to return, stood up.

“I agree that we can’t start jumping to conclusions, but we need to be careful. Something… isn’t right with this. We should just be cautious around her…” Before anyone could respond, Liz walked in, her uncertainty etched across her face. It was obvious things with Tess had not gone well.

“So I assume the gerbil wasn’t too keen on hearing what you had to say chica?” Maria acknowledged. Liz nodded. Her face was pale and her movement slow. She seemed lethargic.

“Yeah… it didn’t go well…” She almost whispered.

“Liz?” Max’s alarmed voice rang through the room just as her eyes rolled back into her head and her body fell to a heap on the floor.

* * *

She was alone. That was the first thing she realized. The room she was in was beautiful. The walls were a deep maroon color with a dark blue outline. The tile floor seemed to have flakes of tiny diamonds glistening in the light from the huge, golden chandelier hanging from the tall ceiling. She came to the conclusion that she was in a ballroom. Tables surrounded what must have been the dance floor. At the far end of the grand ballroom sat the throne. She recognized this place. The Antarian ballroom. But why was she here? And how did she get here?

“Actually, Lianna my dear, you’re in the Royal Zionian Ballroom.” Liz knew who that dreadful voice belonged to before she even spun around.

“Khivar.” She whispered. She found herself recognizing him. He was tall with dark, wavy hair. His eyes seemed almost black. He was the embodiment of evil.

“Yes love.” He smirked.

“But this is a dream. I’m not really here!” Liz declared, trying to convince herself as well.

“That it is. But you will be here soon enough love.” Khivar replies, reaching for her arm and pulling her closer to him. “Soon everything will be right. And you, my dear, will be mine.” He hissed in her ear, before he disappeared into thin air and she was suddenly in Max’s arms gazing into his deep brown eyes.

“Liz!” Max cried, pulling her closer to him. “Thank God!” She gazed up at him with uncertainty and fear, her voice unsteady.

“He’s coming.”
