SEPARATE FORUMS FOR FAN FICTION
We have separate forums for the forms of Roswell fan fiction. Stories are to appear in only one forum - no multiple postings. Please post in the correct forum. Stories appearing in the wrong forum will be moved.

**NOTE**If your story fits in multiple forums, please choose one based on the main couple of the story focus. Please pick your forum with careful consideration so that it attracts the readers you feel it will appeal to most. This ensures that readers looking for that type of fic can find it and readers that want to avoid it can. Put a note on the first page of your fic in the header indicating that you have chosen it to be in that forum and why. This ensures a moderator will know not to move your story.

Example: You've written crossover fic with strong Roswell elements and mild X-Files elements. The main couple of the story focus is Max and Liz. It would be allowed in either the crossover or alternate universe forums, but the alternate universe is probably the better place to put it.

Example: You've written a future fic. The main couple of the story focus is Max and Liz, but it also has plot lines involving Isabel/Kyle. It would be allowed in either the alternate universe or conventional couple forums, but the conventional couples forum is probably the better place to put it.

Example: You've written a fic involving all the conventional couples, but throughout the majority of the story, the main couple of the story focus is Max and Tess. It would be allowed in either the conventional couples or unconventional couples forums, but the unconventional couples forum is probably the better place to put it.
  • Conventional Couples FanFic - This forum is for any conventional couple or multiple couple stories. These are stories that follow or pick up from the story line or "canon" of the original show. Conventional couples are Max & Liz, Michael & Maria, Alex & Isabel, Kyle & Tess, Jesse & Isabel. RULE of THUMB: If, in your story, Max Evans healed Liz Parker in the Crashdown in Sept. 1999 it belongs here. Please be sure to note your major coupling (e.g. M/L etc.) in the title and/or the header of the first post of your fic.
  • Alternate Universe With Aliens Fanfic - This is the place to post stories that significantly alter the show's canon or mythology such as prequels, fics where different characters are alien, and alternative family relationships. These fics must contain aliens or alien storylines as part of their plot.
  • Alternate Universe Without Aliens Fanfic - Fics using the characters from Roswell, but where the plot does not have anything to do with aliens, nor are any of the characters "not of this Earth."
  • Unconventional Couples / Slash FanFic - This forum is for any unconventional couplings, including slash. That means Michael & Liz, Maria & Max, Max & Michael or any threesomes or group couplings.
  • Crossover FanFic - This forum is for any story whose plot or characters crosses over with another show. Such as Buffy, Dark Angel, etc.
  • Alien Abyss - This forum is for those Conventional Couple stories that tend to be controversial in nature; the storylines are mostly CC but with a twist. Do you have a story that doesn't quite fit into CC or AU? Do you have a CC fic that you know is going to cause a riot if you put it in CC? Is your story CC, but you explore a UC relationship as well? You say you don't want to tell the couplings in your Summary, because it would spoil the plot? Your fic only focuses on one character? This is the place to post those fics. This is a "read at your own risk" forum. See the guidelines in that forum for more details.

    Examples of stories that would fit on this forum:
    Begin Again by mockingbird39
    Downfall by Breathless
    Burn for Me by Kath7
  • Dead & Buried, Complete Fanfic, And Fanfic Award Winners Forums - These are specialized forums for fan fiction storage. Please click this link for specifics related to these areas.
DEAD AND BURIED
COMPLETED FANFICTION
FANFIC AWARD WINNERS FORUM

THREAD TITLES
We've laid out specific guidelines as to what is allowed in the thread title. You only have 60 characters to accommodate everything in the title. Use the space wisely. Anything in a fic title that does not belong there will be edited out by a moderator.

Items in titles that are allowed (See addendum at end of this section for specifics on requirements)
  • Title: (REQUIRED)
  • Genre: AU, CC, UC, XO (please see the standard abbreviations section for guidelines.)
  • Pairings/Couple(s): Main couple in the story (please see the standard abbreviations section for guidelines.)
  • Rating: (REQUIRED) A rating must be in the title. See rating explanations below.
  • Part/Chapter Number: There is no need to post
    Chapters 1-10'. If you post just 'Ch 10', it will be assumed that the prior chapters are there. Use standard abbreviations for chapter or part.
  • Page Number: This is the page number where latest update can be found.
  • Author's Note: AN or A/N prior to the date indicates you've left an Author's Note.
  • Date of latest update: (REQUIRED) Most people read far too many fics to have any idea if they've read chapter 10 of your story. By adding a date, (e.g. Ch. 10 - 10/2/04) they quickly figure out if there is a new chapter. Please use standard date formats: MM/DD/YY (numerical e.g. 10/01/04) or MMM DD (e.g. Sep 14) or DD MMM (e.g. 14 Sep) to avoid confusion.
Items in titles that are NOT allowed (The following will be edited out of your thread title by a mod and you will be given a strike). These items belong in a post or the header, not the thread title.
  • Chapter titles
  • Plot descriptions for the chapter (such as "Max & Liz finally talk")
  • Any requests for people to read or leave feedback
  • Any notice of a banner/fan art being added
  • Thank you's or dedications
  • "Co-written by..."
  • "New Fic"
  • "My first fic"
  • "Updated"
  • "New"
  • "Added"
  • Excessive punctuation and symbols designed to draw attention.
  • Any characters that are not part of the standard format.
  • Any words other than those in the fic name. (See Exceptions below)
  • Any other statements not specifically permitted. (See Exceptions below)
Exceptions
  • The word "Repost" will be allowed if you can fit it in.
  • The word "Slash" can be used instead of couple abbreviations in UC fics if appropriate.
  • The word "ALL" can be used in CC fics to indicate all the Conventional Couples are featured.
  • The word "Sequel" or "Series" will be allowed. The titles of specific fics goes in your header.
  • The word "COMPLETE", "CONCLUSION" or "FINISHED" should be included on a story's final post.
  • Standard alpha abbreviations for months in date will be allowed (e.g. Nov, Dec)
Title Format

Titles MUST follow the following format: (See Examples at the end of this document)

TITLE (GENRE, COUPLE(S), RATING) Pt/Ch (pg of last update) ? DATE Of UPDATE

If for some reason you can't fit all of the above in your thread title, then the following will be your guideline for what you can and cannot leave out and the order in which to drop items.

You can start dropping off items in the following order:

1. Page number
2. Extra couples
3. Part/Chapter numbers
4. Forum
5. Main couple

At a minimum, the following MUST be listed in this EXACT format. The parentheses ( ) and the dash MUST be included as they are delimiters.

TITLE (RATING) - DATE Of UPDATE

If you still cannot get the minimum information into your title, then abbreviate the title name.

Example: The title "What's A Girl Like Me Doing In A Guy Like You?" can be abbreviated to

"What's A Girl Like Me ..."

The 3 dots are a universal symbol meaning "there's more to this".

Please keep in mind that the thread titles are merely a subject line. These are not to take the place of author's notes or summaries. If in doubt, leave it out.

**NOTE** There are special guidelines for thread titles on the Crossover Forum. See the guidelines in the Crossover Forum for further information.

FIRST PAGE OF YOUR FANFICTION: HEADER
The header goes at the TOP of the first page so it can be plainly seen. (Unless otherwise specified, all items are required)

Fic headers that do follow this standard below will be edited by a moderator. Anyone who does not meet the minimum requirements will receive a strike. See the Three Strikes Rule above.
  • Title: (REQUIRED)
  • Author: Required ONLY if you are posting for someone else.
  • Disclaimer: (REQUIRED) Type out the standard "you don't own the rights to Roswell" and any notes regarding previously existing works that inspired you in creating this fan fiction. See the Plagiarism Policy for more details on requirements in the disclaimer when using works that are not your own. Use the following for a template if you are still confused:
    "Disclaimer: The characters of "Roswell" belong to Jason Katims, Melinda Metz, WB, and UPN. They are not mine and no infringement is intended."
  • If there is no disclaimer on a new fic, a mod will contact the author to add one. If this is not done within 24 hours of the pm being read, the fic will be deleted. If the pm is not read within a week, the fic will be deleted anyway.
  • Pairings/Couples/Category: (REQUIRED) Include what couples your fic focuses on. Is it UC, CC, or AU? This will help the readers who are most interested in your story find it. And likewise guide away readers who will be upset by your pairings. (please see the standard abbreviations section for guidelines.) When in doubt, write out the names of the characters.
  • Rating: (REQUIRED) A rating must be in the header of first page of the fic. Especially important if the fic is going to go into MATURE or ADULT territory. It is strongly recommended that you include the term "slash" if your fic is contains slash elements. See rating explanations below.
  • Summary: (REQUIRED) Think of this as the back cover on a paperback. You don't have to give away the entire plot. But you can use this as a teaser to what's going to happen to hook readers. You can tell them something without giving it all away. Set up the background - what they need to know to understand what's happening. This is a good place to indicate if your story is a sequel. Readers appreciate it when you include a link to the first fic. "Just read and find out" tells the reader nothing. In fact, it often turns a reader off of that story.
  • Author's Note: Any additional information the author wants to convey to readers can be added here. This is a good place to put thank you's, dedications, notices of updates, etc. This item is required if there is a need to provide a warning to readers if there is something in your fic they may find unsettling. (e.g. UC pairings in a CC fic, extreme violence, suicide, rape/sexual abuse etc.)
**NOTE** Authors, don't play games with your readers, they don't appreciate it. Be honest with what your fic is about so readers looking for that subject matter can find it and readers that want to avoid it can.

Examples: The following summaries and author's notes are good examples of how authors on this board have provided a hook for the readers without giving away the entire plot. Notice they also warned them if the content may be objectionable to some readers.

Summary: Set after ARCC. The granolith does something strange when Max touches Liz's arm in the chamber, sparking a flash of Future Max that leads to Max and Liz's reconciliation. Strange events continue to unfold around the couple and their six friends.

Summary: Takes place after Season 2. Liz left Roswell after Tess blasted off earth. The story opens with her return.

Summary: Liz cheats on Max. Based on a challenge by ana julia.
Author's Note: Liz commits adultery in this fic. She will not always be a sympathetic character. If you cannot handle that please don't read any further.

Summary: Max is devastated by a loss in his life.
Author's Note: If you're the least bit sensitive to suicide references, please move on and read something else. Lyrics are from "Beloved Wife" by Natalie Merchant.

RATINGS:
This ratings guide is courtesy of Jessica at Desert Dwellers. Please do NOT abbreviate the ratings in use. Spell the words out in full.
  • CHILD - suitable for all ages (formerly G) No sex, violence or offensive material.
  • YTEEN (i.e. younger teens) - some content may not be suitable for children (formerly PG)
  • TEEN - suitable for teens and above (formerly PG-13) Generally recommended for teenagers or older. May contain moderate violence and some stronger language, but not too graphic. Sexual themes may be implied, but are not explicit.
  • MATURE - suitable for mature readers (formerly R) Suitable for mature readers. Contains some adult content. The fiction may contain strong language, heavy violence, or some heavier sexual content.
  • ADULT - adults only (formerly NC-17) Absolutely for adults only. Likely contains extreme violence, strong language and/or explicit sexual content.

    SPECIAL NOTE: Due to their nature, we ask that scenes which include reference to, or the aftermath of, rape, molestation or any act of sexual abuse be clearly labeled at the beginning of the fic, and in an author's note at the top of the specific part. Graphic depictions of rape, molestation and sexual abuse are forbidden. All fics which include these topics should be labeled as Adult.

FANFIC COVER ART
We have a lot of very talented fan artists on the board who create cover art for the fan fictions. Since there are a lot of them, we've created regulations to how they will be posted and what size they can be. Any fic violating these standards will be edited by a mod.
  • Cover art may NOT include any full nudity or pornographic material. We have children and or young adults that this material is not suitable for their viewing. If it can't be shown in the 8 PM EST TV slot on the networks, it doesn't belong on Fanatics. (If you need to get approval before posting send it to either Kzinti_Killer, Angel, or jbangelo and they'll get back with you.)
  • Cover art may ONLY be posted in the first post of a story and the first part after the banner has been created.
  • The art may ONLY BE POSTED TWICE within the story. Any additional postings of the arts will be deleted from the post.
  • Cover art may be no larger than 550 x 500 (width by height). That size is the largest size that will not distort screen width or requiring scrolling down to view the entire thing.
AWARD BANNERS
Award winners may post their banners on the first page of their story, but only the first page. If you win an award and want to thank your readers, rather than posting the banners in your "thank you" post, direct them to the first post of your fic.
  • Award banners from other boards are allowed as long as they meet the size regulations below.
  • Banners may be no larger than 550 x 500 (width by height). That size is the largest size that will not distort screen width or requiring scrolling down to view the entire thing.
OTHER IMAGES WITHIN POSTS
Please use your discretion here. If you find a picture that you wish to share and it is too large, you can post a link to it and describe the picture. And please, keep the pictures related to the board and keep them to a minimum.
  • Do not display any art that has any full nudity or pornographic material. We have children and or young adults that this material is not suitable for viewing. If it can't be shown in the 8 PM EST TV slot on the networks, it doesn't belong on Fanatics. (If you need to get approval before posting send it to either Kzinti_Killer, Angel, or jbangelo and they'll get back with you.)
  • No more than 2 images may be included in a post. Any additional images will be deleted.
  • Images may be no larger than 550 x 500 (width by height). That size is the largest size that will not distort screen width or requiring scrolling down to view the entire thing.
  • Animations are not allowed in posts.
IMAGES USED IN RPGS
Banner art for RPG's should follow the same rules as the FANFIC COVER ART
All images used for BIO's should be no larger than 300 x 300 in size. This is because the BIO's usually contain 8 or more images within one post.

SIGNATURES
There are strict restrictions on anything besides words allowed in signatures. Any users violating this will have their pictures deleted from their signature and will receive a strike. See the Three Strikes Rule.

There is only room for 400 characters in the signature area and that includes all spaces and returns. If your signature is more than the allotted amount, the signature will not be saved and will default back to the original message that was last saved.
  • Pictures must be kept to a size that is less than a calculated area total of 90,000 pixels (multiplying the two numbers together).
    (Example: a picture sized 300x300 pixels is fine. 350x250 is also fine. 300 x 350 would exceed a calculated area of 90,000 pixels and would therefore, not be allowed.)
  • Even if the area is within regulations, if the picture(s) distorts the board width, it will be deleted. Meaning images can be no wider than 550 pixels.
  • If you have multiple pictures, their combined size must be within the calculated area of total of 90,000 pixels.
    (Example: You have a picture that is 150x150 = 22500 pixels and another that is 300x100 = 30000 pixels. The combined total of calculated area is 52500 pixels and is within the limits.)
  • Signature banners may NOT include any full nudity or pornographic material.
  • Animations are not allowed as part of a signature.
AVATARS
This is a small graphic image that displays below your name in posts.
  • Image can be no larger than 150 x150 pixels.
  • File size can be no more than 144 KB.
  • Animations in avatars are allowed.

Crossovers

Romance/Couple Designations for Crossovers
Limit thread title information on romantic pairings in crossover to CC or UC (as seen from a Roswellian POV). If a given fic has some UC in it, then for the purposes of the thread title it's UC.

Because some of those crossover couples are pretty far out there we ask that if there is a need for more information, save full names, initials, and lengthy explanations for your summary in the header on the first page of your fic.

Show Titles and Abbreviations for Crossovers
Again, title space is not unlimited so don't spell the name of a given show in full unless you have to. Use commonly accepted abbreviations for show titles. You can explain your particular crossover more fully in your summary in the header on the first page of the fic. (See Abbreviation List below)
  • If the name of the show you are crossing over with has more than 5 characters, you should probably abbreviate it.
  • There's no need to designate the "Roswell" portion of a Crossover. That is a given with any crossover on this board.
Common Show Abbreviations for Crossovers
If the show you are crossing over with is not listed below, try to use these as an example to come up with your abbreviation. If you invent a new one, contact a Mod so that it can be added to the list.

Multi = Multiple shows. (Use this to indicate 2 or more)
BtVS = Buffy the Vampire Slayer
DA = Dark Angel
OC = The OC
LnC - Lois and Clark
OTH = One Tree Hill
TDZ = The Dead Zone
SG or SG1 = Stargate
HP = Harry Potter
DBZ = Dragon Ball Z
XF = X-Files
CHMD = Charmed
HLDR = Highlander
ST = Star Trek
MIB = Men In Black
SV = Smallville

Examples of Acceptable Titles in Crossover
  • Brothers and Sisters (OTH XO CC) A/N Oct. 9 p.2
  • Still Yours (HLDR,XO,ADULT,CC) A/N 10/5/04
  • After all (UC, Buffy XO, Slash,MATURE)

Re: Board Posting Guidelines & Rules -- Updated 03/04/06

Post by mary mary »

Hi,
Just received a pm that i am disqualified from voting because I have not read the rules and this is perfectly alright with me...I only did it because it looked like fun and I have never participated before.

But, here's the question? I went back and checked out the rules...I read these a few years ago so I'm wondering, are there more rules that I am not aware of? If so please let me know.

Thanks,

Ginger aka: mary mary

All the rules for the awards are listed in the RF Awards Rules Thread, all the others rules not related to the awards are listed here. Each time the awards come around you must post a reply to the rules thread and PM an awards forum MOD with the answer to the question that they put somewhere in the thread. This is to ensure that everyone has read the rules or at least refreshed themselves on them. This saves the MODS from cleaning up the nominations made by people who haven't read the rules and who have nominated an ineligible fic or member of the board.

Hope that answers your question.
