Spam Warning

Folks, over the last few months we're been getting a couple of spam posters a month. People who register with us, giving dead end e-mail addresses, simply to post spam advertising for everything from porn to drugs to online gambling. This is getting out of hand, so we're going to have to formalize some procedures to deal with it. Look for a modification of the rules to appear sometime in the next week or so. This won't solve the problem, but it will give us a firm footing from which to handle it. At the present time there is no actual rule against spamming, aside from the fact that it's rude, dishonest, and it ticks off the admins and mods. ;-) Right now, once we identify a spammer (usually as soon as they register), we sit back and watch until they step out of line. Then we delete the links from their profile, and give them a chance to fess-up before we ban them. This is getting to be a nerve-wracking pain in the backside. So, once the new rules are in place, a spammer will find their user name deleted and their IP banned as soon as they're identified, with no grace period. They aren't users as such. They're cyber thieves and vandals. As such they aren't entitled to three strikes, or even one strike. They get no strikes.

So I want to caution you about spammers. If you see topic or post that strikes you as a little weird, do *not* click on any links or banners that poster may be offering. Do not click on their sig or their web page. Report them to the nearest mod at once. We watch for them as they register, but some may get past us. I don't want someone to get bitten by a worm or a trojan horse program. Even if you're confident in your firewall and virus protection, there's no point in taking a chance. All the spammer has to do is be one step ahead of your security subscription at that moment and you're screwed. Surf safely people. Ciao!

Laters,
Rick

Are these spammers the reason that RoswellFanatics has been banned from Comcast?
ken r

if someone complained to comcast they would ban the whole board instead of understanding that in house detectives were on it.

As it is Comcast will not allow RF to send out email alerts

Nope, it's not the spammers. Comcast has it in for Media Blvd. We had a spam problem long before we moved over under the unbrella of Media Blvd. and the spam has abated by about 99% since the new release of php came online. We still get a few now and then, but nothing like we used to, and the few that we do get are killed at once. Speaking of which....time to look at the member list again for any suspicious newbies.

And bingo! We got another one. "ubeatyggo" is a spammer.

So I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that liyanricaoqiyue1314 is a spammer. They’ve left a Spam message on my fic Malign in the AU with aliens forum, and on other fics in other sections. plus a bunch of other places all over the board.
